File: 1 - Ushi on U.A. get it.jpg (330 KB, 1800x1200)

330 KB JPG
You are Ushi Walker, the half-Japanese/half-American wielder of the mighty quirk “Everything is Bigger in Texas”, one of U.A. High’s better-than-average students, and at this moment, aching mightily for some answers. Just a bit of honest-to-goodness clarity on this shady ‘All For One’ character that seems set on terrorizing you and your classmates in 1-A.

So far, your and Shoto’s own endeavors (heh) have fallen short. But now, Bakugo, after witnessing you fail to glean anything substantial from Midoriya as you all departed your last day of the school term, seems poised to succeed where you two had stumbled in interrogating his neighbor.

It’s not a surprise to any of the four of you in that alley that it’s a much more hands-on and physical means of questioning.

It’s also hard to deny the part of you that’s excited by the turn of events…in that ‘gettin’ the job done’ way. Not in the ‘two boys wranglin’ ‘n one physically dominates the other’ way. Nope. Definitely not… That part of you would’ve rather been the one doing the wranglin’ after all.

But there will be, no doubt now, a bit of wranglin', and maybe some yelling… likely some yelling, by Bakugo, and then Midoriya will finally let you know about All for One and how All Might is involved in all of this!

Shoto may not approve, but it's a just cause: the safety of everyone in 1-A! Probably more than that, like whoever else has a League of Villains' target on their back. Besides, Midoriya is holding back and keeping secrets, even when he knows y'all know something’s up. None of this would need to happen if he just gave you what you wanted!

And not at too high of a cost at that. Like Bakugo had just said, he'd just go home after this and that'd be that. Just getting home to his Mom a little later than expected, maybe shakened up and bruised a bit.

By people that should have been his friends, cornered and extorted by them for the truth…

Of course he wouldn’t tell his Mom what actually happened, and probably make some excuse that it was a clumsy accident. Or, far more likely, a result of training.

It’s what you did most of the time too, not much more than a year ago.

…How many times did you feel like you were cornered in a similar fashion during middle school, and not even for something worthwhile? Yeah, you could have broken free at any time. Not much can stop a suddenly ten foot tall person from going where they want to in the short run.

But you never did run. It wouldn’t have been right.

Now Midoriya stands before you. More like awkwardly hunched over, but still, standing, refusing to use his bone-crushing quirk to escape Bakugo’s grasp and flee the alley.

Probably thinking the same reason...

You squeeze your eyes shut, as if you could push the empathetic thoughts out, to stay the course and let Bakugo do as he wishes.

Parallels be damned, this is different! You’ve been nearly killed, twice! You deserve to know what you are facing. If you are all meant to be heroes, you and your classmates have to know what you are up against!

So why then do you feel so ashamed by what’s about to happen?

>“Ushi?”

You don’t open your eyes to look at Shoto. But the reminder of his presence at your side adds a grimace to your already contorted face, your own words from mere moments ago now echoing back at you in your head.

Just because a hero does it, doesn’t make it the right way.

To point out and denounce that the best of you are not always so upstanding doesn't give you the excuse to do the same, nor to just standby while it happens. Especially when it comes to your peers… your friends. The ones that accepted you in a way that you never really knew before U.A..

"...Aight! Let him go sugah! Ah'd like to know what y'all talkin' bout now too, but this is outta line!" You holler, opening your eyes and taking a step forward. You refocus on the pair of boys before you and the first thing you notice is Bakugo has further grappled the smaller Midoriya, nearly pinning the same arm across his back. Bakugo’s other hand, a fist, falls back down from a raised position.

>“Oh, come the FUCK on!” Bakugo turns on you with a roll of both his eyes and head, not letting Midoriya go all the while. “I can almost understand the camera shit on Sunday, but this?!

“It ain’t right!” You protest. You cross your arms and wince internally as you knew what would come from him next.

>“YOU’RE the one that STARTED IT!” Bakugo shakes Midoriya’s stiffened forearm at you. "This little shit's been holding back the whole time. He’s been fucking with me, and you, and just about everyone else as well! I’d thought you had bought his bullshit earlier this year, protecting him the way you did. But you see it now too, ya?! You’re on to him as well and now we can force the truth out!"

At that, Bakugo reaffirms his grip, fully pressing Midoriya’s arm into the lock and forcing him to squeeze himself against the brick wall of the alley.

>"The selfish prick thinks he’s so much more important than anybody else. Mocking us, making out that he’s “earned it” to be here. But now we can put him in his place and for a good reason. Where’s the wrong in that?” Bakugo ends the rhetorical question by nearly spitting the last words into Midoriya's ear, who continues to only wince in silence.

"Bakugo look, Ah know Ah just talked up the "why" being as important as the "what", but…Ah think this is the “how” of it. It’s worthwhile to ask, and it's surely right to be mad at ‘em for holding back on us, but it ain’t either of those things to bully him for whatever scrap he has... it just ain’t worth it to push him away forever." You tighten the hold you have on your arms, loathing to speak from experience again.

>“You say that like him being out of my way wouldn’t be a good thing.” Bakugo barks back with scorn.

“Because it ain’t…” You try filtering what you’re feeling into more words of reason. But you can’t conjure up anything more on the spot to assuage the blond boy.

>"Even if you were to apply further pressure, there’s no guarantee what we gather from Midoriya are the facts. Ushi is right to point out the larger risk here; him never openly sharing anything with any of us ever again." Shoto quickly chimes in from behind you, making it clear to Bakugo he won't be turning a blind eye to the interrogation becoming physical this time.

You try your best to hide your surprise at the sudden verbal support, all the while attempting to keep unblinking eye-contact with Bakugo to make sure he doesn’t kick (or punch) things up a notch.

>”That’s an easy one! If we find out later Deku lied, we bury him so deep in the ground that some of Ushi’s ancestors or whoever gets envious.”

Huh? You don't even get that one.

>"Why would a further threat of violence prevent anything that the current one does not?" Shoto asks, sounding less argumentative and more just genuinely curious. Bakugo merely grunts in annoyance, maybe taking the question for condescension.

>"I wouldn't lie to you. As I said, I just can't tell you more about it." Midoriya pipes up, getting everyone's attention. He looks determined to keep his silence, yet crestfallen. "Please, don't worry about it, it shouldn't involve you."

In a different situation, his downcast expression would have tugged quite a bit at your heartstrings. But right now only your anger is stoked by his words.

"Oh, my bad, was Ah supposed to wait for the third attempt on my life before filing a request to be worried?" You chide, still keeping your eyes on the other boy. “You can try and downplay this wild hog as a newly farrowed piglet all you want, it’s still running riot and rolling around in the muck."

An awkward silence blossoms from the three boys around you, each trying to work through your quick attempt to localize the saying. You get to idly watch as Bakugo’s eyes slim in confusion. Damn city folk.

>"So…you DO want to pry it out of him then.” He concludes, missing the point.

“N-no. You know what? Forget it. Ah’m sayin’ we'll ask All Might if we gotta." You shake your head at him.
>>
>"...As if All Might would be any more chatty…” While Bakugo’s expression remained at something close to what you’d expect if he just drank sewage, his gaze shifts away from you and Shoto at the mention of the hero. Maybe his enthusiasm for swift justice has its limits.

>"All-Might may be just as unwilling to answer, but if you really think so little of Midoriya, and if what he admitted to, that there is a larger threat, is actually true, you would have to consider him merely a pawn in all of this. All Might would be the better piece on the board to focus on. Whatever he lets slip is much more likely to be valuable.” Shoto continues his attempt to dissuade him.

"What he said." You nod along, agreeing with what you understood of it. You were always more of a poker kind of gal.

It was a subtle thing, but as Bakugo began to look less eager, the more ticked off he became by your… was it even an explanation? You reckon he’s peeved at realizing he won’t get to do things his way. And even if he tried now, you and Shoto would forcefully stop him.

"Ease up and let’em go home, sugah. Ah'll tell you what we find out from here and when Ah confront All Might about it." You tell the blond boy. You obviously can't order All-Might to fess up, but you have a decent idea of what buttons to push at this point. "That is, if you really want to know, and not just torment someone you always insist isn't worth your time."

You can hear Bakugo's teeth clack and grind as he clenches his jaw. But in the end, he does it, letting go of Midoriya and taking a single step back. Midoriya, for his part, takes a second to regain his balance and stand up straight, rubbing his arm where Bakugo had grabbed him. So you take that same second to continue.

“And if All Might won’t give us anythin' either, not even breadcrumbs, that’s on him too... If anything happens to us, any of us, it’ll be on both their shoulders for not getting the word out. They’ll have to deal with just how ‘heroic’ they feel then." You finish with a sigh, starting to feel unreasonably tired for a half day of school.

>”If that were to come to pass, they’d likely have bigger issues facing them than just guilt. This All for One person's scant paper-trail doesn't paint much of a picture, but you do not keep that level of secrecy without a bodycount.” Shoto advises.

“All for One, One for All, D'Artagnan or <je ne sais quoi-tever> all this is, Ah just wish Ah knew why the hell he's gunning for us." You shake your head.

Midoriya opens his mouth, looking like he wants to say something (finally), but only ends up letting out a sigh of his own.You half empathize with him, knowing the relief of getting out of a social pickle like this.

The other half is annoyed that it's your pickle that he’s eluding.
>>
>"I… should be going." Midoriya mumbles before turning back to the road you all came in from.

"One last thing. You said you believe we'd be safer not knowing." You state, stopping him in his tracks and getting him to nod. "...Are you safe, Midoriya?" You don’t feel like calling him Deku anymore.

>"...I said I wouldn't lie to you." He answers after a long moment of thought before turning away once more. If you hadn't already strained your patience with the boy, you would jokingly call him out for giving you such a long ‘no’.

Maybe, if you are lucky, you might get back to a pleasant yet distant friendship with him. Maybe after the break.

Or maybe he’ll change his mind and spill the beans before then!

…Ya, that’s just as likely as him ever turning on and being critical of All-Might.

“Might as well ask for the moon while Ah’m at it.” You mumble to yourself.

>"Why?”

You turn back to Bakugo who keeps a deadened stare straight ahead, to where Midoriya just disappeared around the corner, all the while sporting his usual grimace. You are about to explain to him that it is just a figure of speech before you remember and refocus on the fact that you just talked him down from violence.

You are not exactly sure how your mind momentarily wandered off from that.

“Er, like I said sugah, it’s th-” You try to answer, but your canned line doesn't cut it for him.

>“No. Why did you involve me? You could’ve cornered Midoriya yourselves. By yourselves. But you didn’t. You did it in front of me so I’d get involved. So that I could pick him apart if you couldn’t, right? Do things my way? But you stopped me. So if it wasn’t that, then why include me at all?”

You shoot Shoto a glance, who returns it, anticipating an answer from you as well.

“Well, to start, Ah definitely thought about doing things you-”

This time, Bakugo interrupts you with an aggressive breath through clenched teeth, his hands starting to smoke while his eyes remain locked on the end of the alley way.

“Uh, nevermind…Ah think it’s because you have just as much right to know as well. You were an assassin’s target with Shoto, right? Also you had already overheard our last get-together at the sports festival. And, uh… Ah figured that if we included you, there’d be a chance you’d be open to tellin’ what you learned when you were pummeling that assassin?

That last one was a bit of a white lie as you had completely forgotten until now that you wanted to ask him if he had gleaned anything from that creep. Not like you were going to seek Bakugo out after school instead of meeting up with Shoto anyways. You know one certainly likes your company more than the other.

“Maybe all our pieces together would make a clearer picture or somethin’…"

>“...That’s it?” Judging by the lack of change in his expression, Bakugo won’t be changing his mind about you anytime soon.

“Well, now there’s that whole “Made it his own” thing you just mentioned back there which seems far more important than some pervert…”

You wait to see if he reacts to that, or by some miracle, starts to explain what he meant by it. But your hopes are dashed as he keeps on, silently and purposefully, not looking at you. You fill in the awkward silence with one last passing thought instead.

”So, beyond that… what else is there?”

Still not looking your way, Bakugo’s eyes narrow and a snarl starts to return to his lips. A moment later he moves towards the alley entrance, picking up his pack mid-stride. You're about to speak up again to ask him to hold up, but he pipes up at last.

>"Fine! Fucking...fine.” He blurts out, tired eyes blinking and finally connecting with your own while his arms rise in exasperation. All of it sort of mirrors your own sudden outburst a little bit ago. So he made up his mind too? “Here's what I have. Deku had never, not once, shown his quirk before getting into U.A., or the Entrance Exam if Round-Face's story is true."

You nod along instinctively. You had heard or figured as much from your talks with everyone that first week of school. It’s the next part, that puts all of it in a new light, that makes your stomach twist.

>“After the battle trial he admitted, to me, as some shitty apology or something, that he got his quirk from someone else. That he was going to make it his own… It all sounded especially retarded, even for him. But thinking about it… That quirk, when it actually works, just how similar it is to All Might's, right?..."

Bakugo’s gaze drops after that, his grimace looking particularly gloomy.

You had guessed there was some connection from the little pow-wow at the sports festival, but now there’s a far weirder explanation for it: Midoriya got his quirk from someone else, that someone possibly being All Might. Not inherited, but taken from him. Or given? Stolen? Xeroxed?! Are any of those things even possible?

>"As for that pathetic random encounter Icy-Hot made me stumble into the other day, there isn’t much to tell. Didn’t even deny working for the League while I made sure his nose stayed flat. So it seemed like his blubbering about letting down whoever put him up to it was the truthful kind."

You inhale to ask the obvious question and Bakugo flashes his hand (literally, with a light thwump) to interrupt you again.

>”No. There’s no way in hell he was talking about Shigaraki. No one, him nor the rest of that fucking circus of stupidity, at USJ could spin up the fear that kept that piece of shit wailing at me long after he should’ve fallen quiet… That’s it.” Bakugo finishes before adjusting the straps of his bag over his shoulder.

"...T-thank you." You stutter a bit, still a little surprised by Bakugo being the more cooperative of the two boys and even sharing. But more than that surprise, you’re preoccupied by the new questions spurred by it all.

Like, how is it possible for Midoriya to have ‘gotten’ his quirk from All-Might in the first place? Let alone reconcile that fact with having witnessed the pro hero throw out punches with visible shockwaves of super strength many times since losing it. If you can lose it…Or maybe you can share it? What decides that? Do you have to be related? Oh god, is Midoriya being a secret All-Might love child still on the table??

Fortunately, Shoto filled in for you as you spaced out on the implications, letting Bakugo know about what he found, or rather didn’t, on his dad’s agency’s terminal. Afterward, Bakugo merely grunted at your friend in what may have been a somewhat positive way before departing.

"Uh, y'know, don't go after Midoriya, ya hear? Ah don't… wanna have to report you, or somethin’..." You blurted out in farewell after coming out of your daze and before the boy got out of sight.

>"Whatever. You owe me, Briskets.” Bakugo replies without looking back before heading to the train station. Seems like it's back to square one between the two of you.

You don’t think he will go rogue, but you give a small prayer that Midoriya got on an earlier train before finally returning your attention to Shoto.

“Well, that was…a lot.” You exhale.

>“Not the information we were hoping for, but we still came out of it more informed.” Shoto calmly and tautologically observes.

“Sure, if having even more questions than at the beginning counts for credit.” You reply dryly before patting him on the shoulder. ”But Ah get what you mean, and Ah’ve gotta thank you.”

>“That’s not necessary. You didn’t rely on me and you deescalated things quite well yourself.” Shoto ambles forward and you follow along at his side, finally getting out of the alley and back on your way.

“Ah reckon we both know that if you weren’t here to begin with, Ah’d have only eaten my own boot by the time they had gotten on the train. As for in the alley, things could’ve gone quite differently too…and Ah’d have some big regrets later. So ya, Ah did rely on ya in a way: To be here for me.” You try giving him something close to his own soft, subtle smile, but as he continues peering at you with a (barely) raised eyebrow, you couldn’t help but let the timid expression break down and become your usual wide grin.

>"Well, if we're voicing our appreciation again, I should also thank you.”

“What for? Midoriya?”

>"Well, that too… But no, I meant thank you for listening.”

“Listenin’…to you say mah name?” You tilt your head to the side a bit, curious at what he means.

“If that’s all it takes, yes.” Shoto’s small and soft smile is returned back at you. Maybe just for you. It gets you to break eye contact and nearly blushing before Shoto continues with some true words of wisdom.

>“Let's get something to eat before we arrive …home.” He says, some disdain still speckling the last word.

“Yeah! It’s like you’re reading my mind!” You agree, recognizing that lethargic feeling that’s been creeping up on you as your old nemesis: hunger.

>”Not exactly. Your focus faded in and out of that discussion more times than I care to admit. I’ve also noticed that your participation in class falls off right before lunch. Which is now past due, if it were a regular school day. We’ll need to stabilize your blood sugar if you’re to have any chance while training with father today.

“Oh.” So it wasn’t so much reading your mind as it was reading your stomach. Now you feel like blushing for different reasons.

Fortunately the feeling doesn’t last too long. As Shoto leads you back to that rickety cafe you visited last week, you are overwhelmed by the need to share all the questions your little chat with Bakugo had sparked in your head. Between doing that, keeping it all a discreet conversation in case Inuzo continued his habit of eavesdropping, while still trying to eat, made you nurse the meal far longer than any regular school day lunch.

For his part, Shoto agreed with you on all the different possibilities that could be construed if you took Bakugo’s claim about Midoriya at face value. Although the few times you tried to get him to theorize with you, like on how would gaining/losing a quirk even functionally work, he openly side-stepped the question, saying that there weren’t enough facts to make any sort of conclusion yet.

At the same time, Shoto was more than happy to steer your line of thought whenever it went too far awry. Like after he reminded you that your 1-B classmate, Monoma, could “Xerox” quirks after a fashion. That got your mind and mouth buzzing with even grander conspiracies before Shoto dampened them by stressing to you that he couldn’t fathom how the other boy would be involved in any of this.

The only other notable moment of Shoto sharing his opinion was when you emphasized your disbelief at the latest brainstorm: that All-Might somehow had two quirks all along, and ‘released’ one to Midoriya.
>>
>“I don’t think we can dismiss that, we each have two, after all.” Shoto points out, tidying up his side of the table in preparation for your departure.

“Sugah, we’ve been over this. They’re our own, not just mashed together and passed along like a side of potatoes. Lord knows there’s enough people out there who are quirkless, but have parents that do have ‘em, to prove that. It just so happens that ‘Everything is Bigger in Texas’ can go big AND small, while…er, what's yours named again, like, exactly?

>"...Half-Cold Half-Hot?” Shoto answers, taking a napkin into his pocket.

“Wait, so Bakugo calling you ‘Half n’ Half is nearly on the mark?!” You splutter, nearly spilling strawberry shake from your mouth. The deadpan stare Shoto gives you tells you to get on with it. “Ah mean, ‘Half-Cold Half Hot’ also hits both ends of the spectrum: Freezin’ n' Flamin’. Different sides of the same coin. Not to even mention the obvious difference: your quirk can make steam. Can’t say Endeavor’s can readily do the same! It's unique, ya see?”

>”... I guess, but yours does too though." Shoto points out, prompting you to roll your eyes when he gestures at your nose." Without changing something’s size either."

"Vapor ain't steam, sugah." You deadpan back at him which only makes him squint in confusion. "At least, it ain’t water, if mah doctor is to be believed…"

>” What I mean to say is that quirks, as we personally know, are like bodily fu… Muscles. Like muscles. Ours have multiple facets. If we are to accept that a quirk can be lost or given, can we dismiss the possibility that it can be divided along those facets; passing along one part while keeping the other?”

”Ah hope not. To me, that sounds like cutting out half your lungs…the wrong way ‘round.”

>"Is there a right way?"

"Sure, one lung and not the other! Still, that leaves ya nearly out of breath just sittin’ around. And Ah don't see All Might wheezin', let alone bedridden."

“Now that you are obviously done, would you mind if I asked you two not to talk about such procedures in detail if you visit again? I have so few new customers as it is…I can’t leave to chance one of them being scared away by your fascination with bodily functions, muscles, and organs and what not.” The shopkeeper approaches your table with your check in hand.

After some half-hearted and rushed apologies to Inuzo, you both depart and continue discussing the nature of quirks. Mostly more inane observations and retreads of what you talked about with your classmates. Whether it be left-over excitement from what you learned midday today or rising anxiety at what you two face this afternoon, you get to Shoto’s home with nary a minute of silence.

After taking a few seconds outside the gates of the Todoroki household to make sure you didn't have any crumbs left on your uniform, you follow your friend inside.

Despite the abode's nice facade, traditional decor, and your familiarity with its layout by now, it's nigh on impossible for you to feel truly comfortable within, knowing you are about to meet with Endeavor.

Since yielding to his demand and taking on a… supplementary role in order to stay close to Shoto while the Hero continued his tutelage, you’ve tried to use those nerves to keep your focus on razor’s edge; ready to jump in whenever he gives orders to assist and follow them to a tee…

And not a hair-strand beyond that.

You’ve ensured, since leaving the living room weeks ago, that Endeavor would continue to see you as equal parts defiant as well as an asset.

Depending on Endeavor’s mood or goal for the day, you have at times been ‘forgotten’ and get to merely observe as Shoto trains, little more than moral support. For others, Shoto’s father remembers to set you to straining your quirk on something mundane as you watch him teach Shoto in using his flame half.

For his part, what aspects of the training that Shoto thinks you can be included in, he will resist making noticeable progress in until you are. And in turn, you comply, play your role, and never object when taking part.

>"Come in. Quickly." The Country's N° 2 hero forgoes pleasantries, as usual, and ushers you both to the training hall. It's a place you know very well at this point, full of slightly charred equipment and not-very-well padded surfaces that, despite always hurting, never seem to leave you as bruised as you felt.

This time however, you see the training hall in a different light. Or very little light, rather. Most of the room’s breadth beyond the open entrance is cast in shadow. You barely make out some wooden dummies at its center, similar to ones from martial art movies, but elongated. You think you see some other abnormal machine parts at their base, but any further detail is hard to make out in the darkness.

While Shoto doesn't seem to react to the difference in illumination, equipment, nor his father standing next to the doorway, you make sure to keep yourself square with Endeavor as you both enter. Just in case. Whatever is going on, having had a satisfying meal with your friend so recently, you feel ready to handle it. You can feel it in your Guts.

>"It has come to my attention that, despite your training, both here and at U.A,-"

Endeavor begins while sliding the door behind you. Now nearly all of the room's illumination comes from only him and his costume. He turns and keeps his voice and bearing focused on Shoto, as he likes to do, but his word choice in Japanese already makes it clear you are included this time.

>"-you both are sorely lacking. Not only in the necessary situational awareness of a Hero… but also ANY prowess in covert matters!"

Endeavor’s Hellflame flares up, painting his face in stark light. Making it abundantly clear to you both that Shoto’s father is mad enough to spit nails. Spit slag, more like.

You are not enjoying a single bit of this show of force. You step back into the room instinctively, barely keeping yourself from yelping at the sudden surge of fire.

>“Did you really believe I wouldn’t learn of your indiscretions?!” Endeavor fumes, despite his voice barely raising, if at all.

>What do you do?

>[Shoot, this is about Shoto’s snooping on the agency terminal, isn’t it? You ought to just cooperate from the outset and face the music. Better that than face an even more riled up Endeavor. “Don’t do this. You caught us alright?…But Ah want it known Shoto only went through with it because I asked him to.”]

>[You really don’t know why he’s scolding you, but that doesn’t mean you have to take it lying down. Stand strong and show them both you still won’t be cowed. “Enough of the light show. Just tell us what you mean and what you mean to do!"] [Courage(Guts), 5d10]
>[Defying Endeavor is still the name of the game, and whatever he thinks you have done, it’s made him mad. Good. Try to keep it up. “Nah, not really. But it’s not like you can do much to change it."] [Courage(Guts), 5d10]
>[Write in.]

We’re back again. Let's try getting this going once more, shall we?
Typically, Ushi’s pyrophobia would be affecting those Guts rolls, but she’s also feeling sated from Shoto making sure she ate lunch… so those cancel out this time.
Further, since you and Shoto are both under the broiler here, he might be of some help getting out of it…depending on what you do.
Despite the large size of the first post again I promise I'm trying not to make a habit of it. I much prefer writing at the moment. Makes me fall off the radar too much.
Hell, the back and forth is what makes quest-writing fun, after all.

I think its one of the two things Ushi has taken part in that would make waves enough to get Endeavor's attention. (Worth re-reading the archive).

But can't be sure which one it is, thus my vote to buy time and see how Shoto reacts to it.
>>
>>5804810
Yeah, I know Ushi's done some stuff, but I don't know which thing Endeavor would be angry about. It's been a while, I definitely need to re-read the archives and refresh my memory on the details. Regardless, buying time should hopefully get him to reveal what he's angry at, so I'm going with that.

It's also safe to assume he could be talking about the results of Shoto and Ushi's final exams. He is an alumni at UA and it really wouldn't be unlike him to storm in and demand the video results to cater his training accordingly. And those damnable adult heroes again, they'd give it to him if they thought it'd "enrich" their student's hero training.

…Doesn’t Ushi associate All-Might’s smell with blood? I can see why she didn’t immediately connect the dots, but that is evidence of AM being in poor health. Whether she realizes that the health reasons are the cause of All Might passing on his quirk rather than the result is another matter, but there’s definitely evidence for shoot’s theory.

Guys, I’m not so sure we want to incense him with this “Enough with the light show.” business. We may get to go home after this, but Shoto has to live with him.

I can see asking him what he means and what we can do, but just because we’re brave enough to say something doesn’t make it tactful.

Yeah, standing up to him is good, but I'd rather wait until we know what he's angry about before we do it. If we come in swinging too early, it might just make him angrier.

I like it for exactly that reason. I think it's healthier for Shoto to see that his old man can be stood up to once in a while by other people. It makes him seem less like this indomitable figure, that's so hard to get away from, the only option must be to get angry and then feel self pity about quirks.

The worst case scenario, Ushi gets the blunt of it for speaking first instead of Shoto.

Ever since you arrived in Japan, it's been relatively easy to act confident, to stand tall amongst your peers.

Not here, and not now, though. There's nothing easy about looking at a man that is several times your size and actively using all of it to intimidate you, let alone trying to keep a steady gaze on the chilling turquoise spots amidst a sea of Hell's own flames that accentuate Endeavor’s features.

But you've had enough riddles for the day, and if there's one thing you've learned from Endeavor himself, is just how good a motivator frustration can be. You channel that frustration and focus. Not to be at Endeavor’s beck and call, like usual, but instead to ignore him; tune out the hero’s fiery gaze, his sheer presence, and most importantly, withstand the aura of his blazing quirk.

And just like that, for the time being, you glare back at the hero without dread and cannot even hear the crackle of his flames.

So you take a step forward, returning to your friend's side, and face your fears.

Shoto for his part, seems taken aback by your sudden, brazen advance. What little emotion you can read off his firelit expression lets you know that he has no idea what you are about to do.

To be honest with yourself, you are only marginally more certain.

---

The question becomes, do you, if just for a moment, overcome your fears as well?

We’ll soon see… So LET'S RO- Have a mini-vote about Relationship Dice.

Challenging the head of a household inside their residence is, as far as your Momma has told you, among the worst things you can do in Japan that won't have you standing in a courthouse. Were Shoto to get involved, there'd be even worse social consequences for him.

If anything were to go wrong, you'd have no one but yourself to blame. And yet, you are about to rope him into this gamble you’ve committed to.

You are throwing in pretty much all the chips you've got.

You take a step to the side, and make sure to bump shoulders with Shoto, just enough to get him to look at you, and to sneak him the slightest nod you can muster before turning all your focus back onto his father.

"Enough of the light show!" You bark at the hero, clenching your fists tight. "Just tell us what you mean, and what you mean to do!"

You can't say you didn't expect another flare-up, but you didn't expect it to nearly blind you. The intense light radiating from Endeavor’s flames almost forces you to turn away. Despite your efforts to ignore it, your senses are overwhelmed by the deafening roar of an inferno, stifling and as hot as the quirk's name would imply. Blood rushes to your face as if you had stood far too close to a newly opened barbeque pit.

But you don't look away from his cold, contemptuous eyes, no matter how much the whites and reds of his flames try to hijack your unblinking attention while the heat makes your eyes water. Yes, it must be the heat.

Endeavor has no issue continuing to stare you down. Why would he? It’s only been a few seconds, yet you feel like you are in a contest with the sun.

If the sun was such a dick, you'd gladly stare it down too.

>"You got ambushed. Both of you. In the middle of the day in public no less." Endeavor spells out in short bursts dripping with disappointment, yet quelling the anger you expected. "Unacceptable."

After spitting that last word, his flames recede back to his suit's pattern. Massive spots dance in your vision while the darkness of the training room conceals the rest of your surroundings again. So you just keep your blinking eyes directed towards where you hear Endeavor’s voice for the time being to keep up the facade.

>"Had any of your foes actually tried, I would have spent this morning overseeing your funerals instead of requisitioning evidence from the police and calling on favors to strike others from the records." He continues, producing what your spotty sight is fairly sure is a novelty sized pill…wait, no, it's a camera. "So, I'll make sure it doesn't happen again."

It takes you a bit of squinting to make out what Endeavor is doing to the camera, as his appendages appear only as large blobs to you. A moment later, a new flash bursts from between where his hands might be, prompting you to look away. No need to risk losing your sight a second time, especially since your nose instantly confirms your suspicions: the smell of acrid smoke, burning plastic, metal and some other things you are fairly sure wouldn't reach ignition in a natural fire. A clear sign that the camera is being turned to ash before you in seconds.

You wait on edge for the other shoe to drop and for Endeavor to start chewing Shoto out for sneaking information from his sidekick’s terminal. But it never comes. Maybe Burnin never got around to it or it just wasn’t noticed?

Instead, the hero merely wipes his blob-hands of the camera’s ashes, meaningfully clapping them at the same time. You can't help but be a bit impressed as you don’t sense any solid components bouncing against the padded floor.

As you ponder how hot a battery must burn to just cease existing, the dummies you saw before start moving, their arms lazily spinning as some of them approach your side of the room. Judging by the number of different blurry silhouettes you can currently make out, there seem to be a lot more of them than you originally had thought.

>"These dummy mooks are simple yet well built robots. They mostly move as a crowd, shuffling along and spinning their arms. Like the public." Endeavor explains. “Your task, to start, is locate and track the one with the handkerchief as you stand in the center of them.”

“Sounds simp-” You try to stop yourself. You’ve already learned it’s hardly ever a good idea to make such remarks in front of Endeavor. But it’s already too late, it seems.

>“Yes it does, doesn’t it Walker? And since you have been so eager to get started, you will be taking the lead.” The hero clarifies with evident self-satisfaction.

Your reward for running your big mouth, you suppose.

You slowly move to the center of the room. Stumbling without apparent cause at this point, you think, would just undermine your prior moment of boldness. Fortunately, the dummies seem just as keen to get out of your way.

Once you reach what you guess was the center, you turn about and face the hero. With your vision finally returning to normal as well as adapting to the darkness, you can now see more details than just Endeavor’s glowing face and costume towering above the dummies, like the concern etched on the illuminated half of Shoto’s face as he stands by, yet far from, his father. Beyond that, the walls around you remain shrouded in shadow.
>>
“Since we are beginning now rather than after I have properly lectured both of you, I also expect for you to listen meticulously as you track the marked dummy, Walker. Consider learning both lessons at the same time as part of the challenge now,” Endeavor announces before clapping his hands once more.

The dummies start to swarm around you with surprising grace, no sound of wood knocking on wood emanates from the ‘crowd’. You guess, if your eyes adjusted more, you’d see the arms barely passing above and below each other as they rotate and orbit you.

As well as close in on you?

Alright folks it’s time for a challenge! What’s at stake? +1d10 for Ushi’s Courage.
This will be an Opposed Roll however, …against the Mooks!

Looks like Endeavor has your attention split and you are going to have to get creative to succeed. Make suggestions, or vote for other options based on Ushi’s attributes and we’ll roll on the one who wins!

Or…don’t, forgo the extra die and we’ll move on.

>pull out your phone and turn on the flashlight

>[Write in!]
It seems to me like the primary challenge here is not losing the marked dummy in the crowd if we manage to find it. Assuming these dummies are somewhere between five and six feet tall, shrinking them as we establish they aren't the mark by 50% will make it easy to tell at a glance that we can ignore them, and use their mass to increase our size to look over them, depending on how high the ceiling in this room is. Once we find the mark, we can increase it's size too, but not enough that it's a danger to us.

Thoughts?
>>
>>5813933
These dummies are stand-ins for a crowd of civilians. I don’t think shrinking them all really fits the simulation of being vigilant in public.
>>
>>5813963
I considered that, which is why I chose to say shrinking them only 50% instead of a negligible size- it's still large enough to get away and use doors and things, but not enough to get in the way. We're not sure what the marked dummy is supposed to represent, but presumably us accomplishing our task regarding it increases their safety more than shrinking them puts it at risk. It is hard to say in a simulation, though.
>>
>>5813890

>[Place your hands on your hips and channel your mass-sense through your legs and into the room. Use it to “see” everything instead of your eyes.]

As long as these robots aren’t flying, and we keep one foot on the ground at all times, we can track them all. And that’s no matter if it’s pitch-black, if they’re behind us, or if they’re behind each other. Everything from the handkerchief to their arms are all connected solid masses.

Hell, it should even let us dodge with our eyes closed if we roll well enough. And with the dice on our quirk, we’ve got a very high floor.
>>
Is there something on the ceiling we can grab to? We could jump there, and try to spot the dummy we need from above, using the phones flashlight like the other anon said

Supporting. Even though it may not fully work due to also needing to listen to Endeavor, its the type of skill I think is worth improving.

So taking an Endeavor "punishment" and making it a chance to improve something like it is the definition of making lemonade fr
om lemons.

Pretty much the same thing, but just in case I am supporting this. Here's your (you).

I hope Ushi doesn't try to explain how she came up with this to Endeavor and Shoto. I don't think she can string the words "Edgeshot," "tower," "feeling for/up," and "mass" in one explanation without really messing up.

Agreed, and that's also pretty funny.

I really need to get some laughing reaction images, 'cause I got nothing that fits other than this.

What canon stuff has Deku experienced in-quest?

Like Ushi's changed quite a bit, so I was wondering how the canonical main character is doing so far.

Does this count?

>He wasn't last in the Quirk Apprehension test because Ushi asked Shoto to do first aid on his finger.
>He's got a huge rash on his back from fighting Bakugo in the Sports Festival, instead of a fucked up and disfigured hand from, trying to talk some sense into a canon Shoto.
>Ushi helped him feel out how much stress his body was taking from his quirk, and gave him a 15ft opportunity to go wild.
>Wasn't the one to fight Shinzo.

Those are the only ones I can think of off the top of my head.

Seems a bit sarcastic, but thank you anyway

Of note: because he didn’t fight Shinzo, he didn’t get that vision of the vestiges within One for All. At least, not then. We’re not privy to whether they showed up in his dreams to make up for it or something.

Most likely they showed up during the training of the dead OVA instead, since he got mind-whammied during that instead of surviving it like in canon.
>>

Support. Ninja-training pays off.
Cool that people remember things like that despite there being months between episodes.
>>
>>5816206
Yeah. Also means Shinzo might not be scouted. He barely got to show any stuff because Dark Shadow stole the show by being a powerful autonomous quirk. In canon, Shinzo almost won against the guy that was tearing up the field with a flick of his fingers in the next round. In quest canon, he was a normal General studies guy with a hat trick that sort of almost worked for 3 seconds. Both Shinzo and Uraraka had an unfortunate roll fighting Tokoyami.
>>
>>5816528
For what it’s worth, he was still the only Gen Ed student to make it past the Calvary battle and I’m pretty sure he was the only Gen Ed student to make it past the obstacle race too. He had to beat out the bulk of the heroics course students to do that.

And it’s not public opinion that determines his advancement, it’s the faculty, and they have the acuity to know he only lost that round because his opponent happened to have an autonomous, brainless quirk. So unlike in canon, there’s at least a clear reason why his technique didn’t work, whereas with Deku it just sort of looks like he shakes it off on his own.
>>
Let's not throw out RD for this roll

I just hope we didn't fuck him over in the long run. He's one of the good eggs that are stuck in a bad place.

I did say it was a contested roll, didn't I? The Mooks aren't there to be easy...

And it looks like you will be using that mass-sense you have up your metaphorical sleeve!

That’s an interesting way of handling things. I wonder how long Ushi will have to keep it up…

But Ushi is also doing some active listening! That means she’ll be attempting two actions, tracking and listening to Endeavor's lesson.

Thus, you are looking for least two pairs in a given roll, and typically, you’d also be losing one of your die for the attempt… But since your Quirk includes Reliable (2, in fact) you lose one of those instead of a die. I'll set it for you, for convenience.

Now let's see how well you >>5834679 deal with it all...

Why is that pic of Present Mic so cute?

Speaking of Present Mic being cute, I'm so fucking mad that I can no longer find a video about best girl in mha, mocking all the other girls and declaring Present Mic the best.

Over a month since the OP and only three updates.

You must be new in this quest, Mic is in an abusive relationship with his life and his work, waiting is mandatory.

That's the present mic experience. No point in waiting for updates, just come around once every 2 weeks to check if there's a new one
