You are an Onyun and you have a big problem. You are a Z-rank monster and you are sapient! With the exception of Roundmen, Z-rank monsters aren't supposed to be sapient!

Normally, one would think that achieving sapience is a good thing, but not for Z-rank monsters! After all, sapience means you can experience fear.

However, worry not, for you have the natural abilities of an Onyun!

Your first skill, Photosynthesize allows you to recover HP and Sulfur.

Your second skill, Sulfurous Breath, consumes Sulfur and lets it out in a stinky belch, causing your target to flinch!

What do you, an Onyun do first?

You decide to explore the French Toast fields.

Although you only barely pass as a POISON elemental Monster, the sweet smell of the CANDY elemental fields is still somewhat repulsive to you.

Of course, you chose to go in the French Toast fields because CANDY elemental monsters are notoriously weak to Poison and you were hoping to get some easy kills to get that rank up.

A few minutes after wandering the fields, you spot a huge SNEK-tribe monster. Its coloration tells you that it's CANDY elemental, however it's much too large for you to take down by yourself.

You're pretty sure that it's at least Y-Rank. It gives you a sniff before wrinkling its snout and slithering away.

Yeah, CANDY elemental monsters really don't like the way POISON elemental monsters smell.

Maybe you can follow it in the hopes of getting a piece of whatever it decides to kill...

Or you can follow the Maple Syrup river out of the French Toast fields.

You follow the SNEK for a bit. It doesn't seem to notice your presence because you're careful and Y-rank monsters are pretty fucking stupid.

The SNEK is observing a group of Yykworms munching on some buttered toast. It's probably gonna try eating them or something since INSECT elemental monsters are pretty pathetic.

Actually, PLANT elemental monsters like yourself are pretty low on the totem pole too, so this is like the pot calling the kettle black.

Oh yeah, the Yykworms are Z-rank monsters too so you can probably take one, but definitely not three at a time.

>Wait for the SNEK to strike

>>5777647
>>5777653

It doesn't take long for the SNEK to strike. It seems it was waiting for the YYKWORMS to be full before attacking and it didn't take long because INSECTs like to gorge themselves as fast as possible.

There's an opportunity here...

> Spray the SNEK with your Sulfurous Breath (Risky, More XP)
> Snap up an YYKWORM into melee while the SNEK deals with the rest (Less risky, less XP)
>>
>>5777675
> Snap up an YYKWORM into melee while the SNEK deals with the rest (Less risky, less XP)
Don't risk it
>>
>>5777710

While the Snek is attacking the Yykworms, one of them tries to run away. An exercise in futility as Yykworms can only vaguely shuffle.

Its sisters are spraying the Snek with Silk and don't notice the errant Yykworm not doing her share.

You decide to punish that, blocking the Yykworm's escape.

That said, you don't actually have much to fight with. Onyuns are pussies.

You spray the Insect monster with your Sulfurous Breath, causing it to retch and wheeze. Honestly, that's just rude! Your breath isn't that bad!

You bite it, mostly due to lack of any other way to fight. It tries to get away, but your Sulfurous Breath attack means that it's having a hard time breathing.

You successfully defeat the Yykworm and level up!

Yeah, Z-rank monsters ain't shit, which is why most Onyuns just Photosynthesize until they get to the Y-rank while hoping they don't get eaten (They always do).

You level up your Blockness, since you didn't want to get hurt and Blockness will allow you to weather more attacks.

Afterwards, you part ways with the Snek, since it's way too risky to be so close to a Y-rank monster whose element opposes your own.

You sing a jaunty little tune about delicious onions as you follow the maple syrup river.

Somehow, at some point, the maple syrup river stops being maple syrup and reverts back to being water.

Being close to a water source means you'll probably see more monsters. What do you do?

You get in the water and find a bunch of Krebs picking on a Symbolfish. The Symbolfish is huge. Way larger than it should be considering it's a BORING elemental Z-rank monster.

Oh yeah, Krebs are Z-rank too. And your PLANT elemental beats their WATER elemental.

However, you don't have any PLANT elemental techniques, so your advantage is defensive at best. Additionally, you're underwater so your SULFUROUS BREATH won't be useful here.

What's your plan?

You wait for an opportune moment before attacking the Symbolfish.

You coordinate well with the Krebs, mostly because you're sapient and they're not.

Without the use of Sulfurous Breath, you're left having to fight with somewhat ineffective bites and kicks.

Really, the Krebs do most of the work as they have powerful claws meant for rending other water critters.

However, it seems the Krebs think you're cool for helping them even if you're somewhat ineffective.

Z-rank monsters gotta stick together, or something like that.

Unfortunately, defeating the Symbolfish didn't give you a level up because BORING elemental monsters are pretty weak.

However, now that the Krebs have their bellies full, they're on the look-out for more dangerous prey.

>Keep hanging out with the Krebs

You follow the Krebs until they find two Skorps to hunt. Skorps are the natural enemy of Krebs, and they typically try to eat and kill each other.

Like you, Skorps are POISON elemental, so killing one would definitely level you up.

However, there are only two Skorps and trying to muscle your way into killing one will annoy the Krebs.

> Fight a Skorp anyway
> Sit this one out.
> Use your Sulfurous Breath to support. You don't level up from this, but the Kreb Krew will like you even more.

You belch smelly gas onto the Skorps, causing their big eyes to water.

Contrary to popular belief, POISON elemental monsters aren't actually immune to the poison of other species. Almost every POISON monster has its own mix of poison that it uses.

Using your Sulfurous Breath, the Krebs are able to make quick work of the Skorps.

The two Krebs who participated in the fight even leveled up!

Unfortunately, you're out of SULFUR and will need to Photosynthesize to get more in your body.

The Krebs are ready to move on, but photosynthesizing means you get left behind. The Krebs like you enough that they will eventually come back for you, but you would need to do one encounter by yourself if you decide to photosynthesize.

If you decide not to, you can sense some potent Poison elemental Energy nearby. There's probably some decently powerful monsters around that energy that you can train on, but it's very dangerous.

>Go to the source of Poison energy (Risky, the Krebs will come with you.)

You stick yourself in the ground to Photosynthesize. On top of refreshing your reserves of sulfur, any scrapes and bruises you accumulated from your travels have healed.

Your Kreb companions are nowhere to be found, since they probably didn't want to wait an entire day for you to recover your sulfur.

The potent poison energy at the edge of your senses is still there, but perhaps it would be a smarter idea to pick on something more your size.

>Go investigate the Poison Energy anyway (Very risky without your companions)

You go hunting for Skorps because you know for sure that it would help you level up.

It doesn't take long for you to see a bunch of Skorps ganging up on a monster you don't know. As for why you don't know why that is, well your speculation is that you only know about monsters that are local to the area you gained Sapience in.

Whatever that monster is, you're pretty sure it isn't local. However, you can tell that it's SPOOKY elemental mixed with some EARTH elemental.

The three Skorps are ganging up on it, but they are somehow still losing to the mysterious monster's SPOOKY elemental attacks.

You decide to help the mysterious foreign monster dispose of the Skorps.

Of course, although you try to get some ineffectual hits in battle, it turns out the foreign monster isn't bad at fighting.

It's Rank Z, but it seems to be decently powerful, so probably a few levels above you. It seems to have a Fastness/Blockness sort of build. Its SPOOKY flame attacks, while flashy, aren't dealing as much damage as they should.

Immaterial when the guy is basically kiting them.

Still, you get enough hits in that it counts for you to level up.

You hate Skorps! Well, actually, your Kreb friends hate Skorps. You feel indifferent towards Skorps.

So you follow your friends as they search for more Skorps. You find a pair, but Skorps are starting to get weirdly scarce in this area.

You decide to help your friends by spraying the Skorps with your Sulfurous Breath. However, you don't take their kills, since you just leveled up and you didn't want to be greedy.

Your friends are all too happy to take advantage of your support and the two of them manage to make quick work of the Skorp.

They're a lot stronger since you last saw them-- just how many monsters did they kill while you were photosynthesizing!?

Anyway, although the Krebs aren't exactly at the level where they're Sapient, they still feel grateful for your support. Your Sulfurous Breath helped them kill more Skorps than they usually do, and as far as Krebs are concerned, that's great.

They decide you're trustworthy enough to take to their leader, a Y-rank Kreb.

The Y-ranked Kreb is huge, and one of its claws is a fierce blade. It recognizes you as a friend of the Krebs and allows you access to the Kreb Den.

You may Photosynthesize at the Kreb Den instead of the outside. The Krebs will protect you from predators.

There are a surprising amount of Krebs in the Kreb Den right now. It's actually a little crowded.

You suspect it's because there aren't too many Skorps to bully.

There's also a Roundman village nearby.
(Roundmen are one of the rare Z-rank monsters who are actually sapient at Z-rank. They hate Krebs. Roundmen are consistently weak enough that you won't get any XP from killing them.)

You finally decide to check out the poison energy signature that you've been feeling for the past day or so.

Ever since you started sensing it yesterday, the energy signature has been getting stronger and stronger.

The other monsters are spooked, so they don't go near the cave, but there are a bunch of Rocklings milling about in the cave.

Rocklings are Z-ranked monsters, but they aren't even worth mentioning. Although Roundmen are typically considered the bottom of the food chain, Rocklings aren't even 'proper' monsters per se.

They only manifest if there's a particularly strong ROCK elemental monster around.

You better be careful.

Exploring the cave with your mates, you find two paths.

There are more Rocklings down the right path, while the left path seems to be full of Antonies.

Here where the paths converge, Antonies are killing and devouring Rocklings. Normally you'd say it's a futile action, but you think Antonies actually use rocks to harden their shell or something. You're not really sure how ROCK elemental ecology works.

The 'signal' of the Poison energy is stronger to the right, but given how many Rocklings are coming from there, you would need to prepare to fight a powerful ROCK elemental monster.

You engage the Antonies, allowing the Rocklings to escape. It's probably too much to hope for that the things will be grateful to you since they're unable to actually think and learn.

Well, anyway, there are three Antonies and four in your party.

Now that you have the Antonies' attention, you need to think of a plan.

Your friends are already engaging one of the Antonies three-on one. Its hard carapace is repelling your comerades' attack while its two cohorts are taking the opportunity to attack from behind.

Your friends have shells of their own, but they're definitely not as strong as ROCK elemental shells. If you don't do something, then the Antonies will definitely win.

You help your friends gang up on the lone Antonie, kicking its legs and biting its feelers. You can't really do much about the rock shell, but that's the natural advantage of ROCK elemental monsters.

Eventually, through your combined efforts, the Antonie dies. You feel the faint ding of a level up, but you're not able to take care of that just yet.

The two Antonies that were wailing on your friends managed to crack the shell of one of the Krebs.

The other two Krebs step in to protect the wounded ally, but the Antonies are determined to not have the battle devolve into a 1v1.

It's not even a question that you would help defend your wounded comrade. You've only known these Krebs for two days and they're already your Ride or Die.

Granted, it was a little awkward at first, but you quickly get into the rhythm, stepping into the gaps of your friends' attacks.

The Antonies were hardy, but when one of the Krebs snapped off one of the Antonies' feelers, it flipped over and started to flail its legs in the air.

You were able to gnaw its legs off after that, allowing your friends to make quick work of the remaining Antonie.

Well, maybe not as quick as you'd hoped because you needed to step in there a bit repeating your friend's accidental discovery and biting off one of the feelers.

You allow your friends to kill it so they can level up.

Speaking of level ups, you leveled up twice in that fight, so you have two stat points to distribute.

You put both of your points in Strongness. About this much should allow you to easily shatter low level ROCK elemental monsters with your kicks and bites. You have a feeling that you're going to need it if you're gonna head down the Rockling path.

Additionally, you level up your Sulfurous Breath to level 2 so it now deals a small amount of damage on top of causing enemies to flinch.

One of your allies is injured. Choose:
> Fight some more Antonies to the left
> Go down the Rockling path to the right
> Return to the Kreb Den (Ends this adventure. -1 Kreb ally for next 3 Encounters)

As you head down the right path, the number of Rocklings only grow. They're stacking and shaping stone in the distinct way that Rocklings do. If you had any idea what they were, you would almost say they were skyscrapers writ small.

As you get farther and farther from the entrance, the cave gets darker and darker. It's harder for you and your cohorts to see and honestly the Krebs are a bit spooked. You are too because these conditions are a prime for an ambush.

What do you do?
>Wreck the Rocklings' shit to try and get the attention of whatever it is that's spawning them

2 Diff votes, but I like creative write-ins so...

You start billowing your Sulfurous Breath into the cave, filling it with noxious gas. The Sulfurous breath sticks low to the ground, damaging most things that have to walk.

As expected, you managed to piss off whatever's in the next room.

It comes out holding that weird crystal thing at the end of Skorp stingers looking mighty angry.

You can tell from the fearful aura it has that it's a SPOOKY elemental. Because of the Rocklings, you're pretty sure that it's ROCK elemental too. However, despite knowing its elements, you come up blank with a name for this species.

Perhaps... it's the same species as that other foreign monster that you saw earlier?

Anyway, it looks like it's gearing up to attack with some SPOOKY purple flames. Dodging out of the way will cause the purple flames to hit your allies behind you.

In a moment of clarity, you move out of the way of the blast. However, knowing that you would put your friends in danger, you run towards the nearest Rockling and give it a steady kick.

As mentioned before, Rocklings barely qualified as real monsters, only being manifestations of a ROCK elemental's power.

Thus, when you kick the Rockling, it goes flying, intercepting the blast of SPOOKY flame. The flame and the Rockling collide, exploding and shattering the Rockling to a bunch of pieces.

However, at such a close range, neither you nor the caster of the SPOOKY spell were harmed, as it was also a ROCK elemental with high defense.

You were hit by a few shards, but mostly unharmed except for a couple of scratches

Sensing the start of the battle, your allies charge, their claws snapping in fury.

What's your plan of attack?

Once again, you find yourselves supporting your Kreb friends as you draw Sulfur from deep within yourself and let it out in a single debilitating breath.

Where before, your Sulfurous Breath could only irritate the soft-bits of a monster, now you can see the ROCK elemental monster's shell soften and start to yield to your Kreb companions' attacks.

Frustrated, the foreign monster releases another blast of SPOOKY elemental magic, knocking your allies back.

Your Kreb ally with the cracked shell, his exterior already weakened by it is critically injured. Although your other Kreb allies didn't have any externa injuries, they still seemed to be rattled by the attack.

You're out of Sulfur now and you can't Photosynthesize while you're in a cave. What do you do?

You rush towards the foreign monster with a kick, but it had retaliation prepared. With a slash of SPOOKY energy, the foreign monster leaves a large gash along your face shortly before you smash into it, cracking its ROCK-elemental shell.

With no shell to hold it together, the monster rapidly bleeds SPOOKY energy before the remains of its shell crumble to the floor.

With your current wound, it seems like your next PHOTOSYNTHESIS will be dedicated to healing it and you won't get any SULFUR back. Annoying, but being friendly with the KREBS means you can simply Photosynthesize for a couple of days without being bothered.

Without the ROCK elemental monster sustaining them, the Rocklings will probably die off.

Regardless, you go into the room that the monster was guarding.

Here, the POISON energies were most potent-- Your Kreb allies had to stay outside in order to not be poisoned. Even you, a POISON elemental monster are just barely not poisoned by the energies.

At the locus of these energies, a singular gem floats. You recognize the poison signature now-- These seem to be SKORP gems, condensed and welded together by potent SPOOKY energies.

You were unable to sense the SPOOKY energies before because you weren't SPOOKY elemental, but this close, the SPOOKY energy keeping the gem together was undeniable.

... You would poison yourself badly if you ate this, but on top of the 2 Levels you gained from fighting that foreign monster, you would gain another two levels on top of that. Without that foreign monster providing this gem with SPOOKY energies, the gem would destroy itself from its POISON energies osmosing into the air.

However, there's a third option you can take here...

> Eat the gem (You will be badly poisoned for the next 3 encounters, gain 2 levels)
> Leave the gem alone
> ... Implant the gem into one of the ROCKLINGS. It should be enough to sustain the Rockling for a long while and it will recognize you as its new master.

You didn't risk pissing off a bunch of Antonies and fight a ridiculously strong (For Z-rank) foreign monster just to pussy out at the last step.

Badly poisoned or not, you consume the Poison Crystal, letting the potent poison energies flow through you.

It'll take a while for your body to adapt to the poison energies, but it's worth it because you have a whopping 4 Levels to spend.

Distribute 4 points among

> Strongness
> Blockness
> Fastness

Exiting the cave with your buddies, you see the rose-shaped SPOOKY/ROCK elemental monster you saw hunting Skorps earlier.

It approaches you, gives you a sniff, and realizes you've eaten the Poison Crystal.

It makes an annoyed noise and leaves.

With one of your buddies and yourself badly injured, it might be prudent to rest up. What do you do?

Two different votes but I'll pick the first one to be fair.

After distributing your stat points, you head back to the Kreb Den and Photosynthesize. You only Photosynthesize long enough to recover your physical form, also removing the spooky looking scar you got on your face.

Unfortunately, one of your Kreb friends is heavily injured and it's not like Krebs can Photosynthesize for quick recovery. (You only have 2 Kreb friends for 5 encounters)

Your photosynthesis has spent the PLANT elemental energies in your body so you probably need to hunt something to recover it.

As it turns out, now that the SKORPS are more or less extinct in the area, the Krebs are looking to expand into the SKORPS' former territory.

It's been a while since you went to the French Toast fields so you decide to give it a visit.

You find yourself lucky to spot a couple of Kookees trying to fight off a CANDY SNEK. Kookees tend to be fairly rare but are delicious. At your level, killing them wouldn't give you a level-up, though. However, you're sure that you can suck up to the Y-rank KREB by giving him the KOOKEES

A swift kick causes one of the KOOKEES to... die. There are numerous cracks along its body, but you suppose that's because you're way too powerful for KOOKEES to survive your attacks.

However, stealing its kill really pissed off the CANDY SNEK, and you're under no illusions that you can beat a Y-ranked monster.

You make a swift retreat. Although you have no illusions that the SNEK could have easily caught you, it seems that it decided you weren't worth the trouble after seeing you head towards the KREB DEN.

The Y-Rank Snek will probably remember your face the next time you head to the French Toast Fields

Now, all you need to do is give the KOOKEE corpse to the Y-rank Kreb.

You decide to give the KOOKEE corpse to your injured comrade. After all, it was your decision to chase after the Poison Gem that lead to him getting so injured.

As it turns out KOOKEES had some mild healing properties which explains why KOOKEES are so rare.

It wil now only take 3 encounters for your Kreb friend to fully heal. If you were braver, maybe you could go find another Kookee to help completely heal him.

The Y-rank Kreb calls for you and it seems that he wants you to take your friends and scare some Antonies that have been trying to muscle in on the Skorps' former territory.

What do you wanna do?

You decide to go scare some Antonies. There are Antonies here that are 'Blue Antonies', a more defensive form of Antonie.

Honestly, you're not sure if scaring the Antonies here is necessary.

They're fighting a bunch of those black goop monsters that you can't identify. The goop monsters are SPOOKY and SHADOW elemental, but you have no idea what their names are. You're pretty sure that means they're foreign.

It's getting alarming how you've encountered at least three different foreign monster species in such a short amount of time.

Anyway, the Antonies are making short work of the goop monsters, but the goop monsters are trying to overwhelm them with numbers.

Why are there so many SPOOKY elemental monsters around here recently anyway? You don't know of any local MENTAL elemental monsters for them to feed on, but they're clearly deriving sustenance from something somehow. What do you do?

You decide to make trouble for both the Antonies and the goop monsters.

As it happens, the goop monsters were easy enough to take care of. They dissolved into motes of SHADOW and SPOOKY energy with a solid hit. The problem was they were endless.

Not even manifestation tier monsters like Rocklings appeared in this great numbers.

And you can tell these aren't just manifestations because they seemed smart enough to fight the Antonies.

Now, the Red Antonies, you knew how to take care of. Biting off their antennas cause them to basically keel over and die. However, your Kreb friends aren't smart enough to take advantage of that weakness because they aren't sapient like you.

Even with you specifically targeting the red Antonies, the blue Antonies are stonewalling you from easily taking care of the red ones.

All in all, the fight is a mess and doesn't look like it'll be over soon.

Fighting both Antonies and the blob monsters are tiring out your Kreb friends, so you'll have to find a way to let them retreat soon. You're far from tired though because you're a PLANT elemental monster and you don't really get exhausted.

Anyway, with your 5 points in attack, the weaker blue Antonies get their exoskeletons severely fucked up.

However as the fight goes on, more and more high leveled blue Antonies are showing up and you can't crack their shells quite as easily.

Despite their hardiness, the blue ones are almost harmless because they don't have much in the way of attack.

Your Kreb friends and the blue Antonies can pretty much whack each other all day and not do any significant damage to each other.

The problem was that the red Antonies CAN in fact damage your allies so you're constantly on the lookout for their attacks.

The blue and red Antonies are very coordinated unlike your comparatively dumb allies.

Hold out for one more turn and reinforcements will arrive.

Hold out for two more turns and the Krebs will be able to establish an even better presence in the former Skorp territories.

However, the longer you hold out, the greater the risk for your allies

What do you do?

Fun fact: Except for Roundmen, most monsters stall at Y-rank. Y-rank monsters are strong enough that they can only level up from killing other Y-rank monsters, but they're also way too cautious to attack other Y-rank monsters.

Y-rank is usually the level where other monsters start getting sapient.

I think this is the actual threat. The blues can be left unattended since crabs and blues can't hurt each other too much, and adding another member to the Goop fight doesn't seem like it'll make much of a difference. 3 v 30 and 4 v 30 isn't a big gap.

You focus on the red Antonies, since they can actually damage your Kreb friends.

As you spot one going for your friend, a blue Antonie blocks your way. Knowing you can't fight both the blue Antonie and protect your friend at the same time, you put the blue Antonie out of the way and rush to block the red one.

Blocking the red Antonie's attack results in a shallow gash around your midsection. It's not nearly as devastating as the one you got from that SPOOKY foreigner. It'll be simple to fix with your Photosynthesis skill once you can use it again. Those extra points you put in Blockness is really helping out here, honestly.

You quickly retaliate by biting off its feeler causing it to keel over and die. No level up.

Which really made you realize how much stronger you've gotten in the span of just a couple of days.

Most Onyuns would just Photosynthesize for a couple of months to get to this level, but your risk-taking behavior has been rewarded with copious level ups at this point.

Your friends are getting swarmed by the black blobs. Weirdly enough, the Antonies end up helping them out a bit, as the Antonies are getting rid of whatever black blobs they can, some of which were all over your allies.

One of your Kreb friends activates Thorn Claw. It's the first time you've ever seen them use a skill. You suppose they probably DO have them-- they're just not smart enough to activate them.

A large spike of swirling WATER energy erupts from your ally's claw, dissipating the black blobs en masse. It almost makes him look like their Y-rank leader.

Seeing his ally activate that skill makes something click in your other ally. He stares at his claw for a bit, and a spike of WATER energy erupts from it, surprising him.

You love those idiots, honestly.

However, activating the skill seems to accelerate their exhaustion. Unlike your SULFUR, they seem to rely on an internal well of energy.

While your allies fight for their lives, two parties of Krebs arrive to help. They're wasting their time fighting the blue Antonies, not really seeming aware of the danger the black blobs represent.

While you were a few Antonies close from leveling up, you didn't want another of your friends getting badly injured because of your greed.

You whistle at them and they both make their way towards you in their own Krebby ways.

You lead a final charge as you guide your allies through a hasty retreat.

The reinforcements should be able to handle getting a foothold into the former Skorp territory.

The Y-rank Kreb is extremely pleased by your performance and your Kreb friends clack their claws in their strange version of clapping.

The injured one looks a little sad about missing the fight, but he should be all healed up in about two more encounters.

Let's combine these.

You decide to investigate the mysterious new enemy. From what you can gather, it only appears when there are a bunch of Antonies.

So you put your noggin to use and wait until a bunch of Antonies come to fight.

However, instead of directly fighting them, you smartly thin out the hoards of black blobs so the attacking force of Antonies will be coralled into one spot.

Your plan works and it doesn't take long for an unfamiliar monster to appear.

Is that a black Antonie!? You didn't know the came in black!

There's a red and blue Antonie with it and it seems to be coordinating them to attack other Antonies.

You didn't even know Antonies could infight. Generally INSECT elemental monsters of the same species got along well with each other.

What do you do?

>Observe how the fight goes.
>>
>>5780098
>>5780113
>>5780123

You're here to observe, so you stick to observing.

The coordination on the black Antonie's party is a bit inferior to the regular Antonies, however the normal Antonies are a bit hesitant to attack one of their own.

The decision is made for them when the normal Antonies seemingly controlled by the black Antonie attack.

Is this it? the guy everyone's scared of?

The black blobs support the black Antonie though don't seem to be directly controlled by it.

With the black blobs supporting the black Antonie, the fight is just about even... at least until the black Antonie casts some SPOOKY magic that allows him to control some of the Antonies on the opposing side.

So that's how he's coordinating Antonies... If he can mind-whammy other monsters... then the Krebs are right to be scared.

Though the success rate doesn't seem to be certain, since some Antonies resisted its control and are now being attacked by the controlled Antonies...

Hmm.

You are filled with the certainty that you don't want your friends near that thing.

Heedless of it controlling a bunch of Antonies, you attack.

You spray it with Sulfur and it flinches. The distraction makes its control of the Antonies waver and you can see its guards reacting more slowly.

Although the red one attacks you, it can't get past your Blockness.

The uncontrolled red Antonie seems to recognize you as an ally for now and helps you by attacking the blue Antonies trying to defend the black Antonie.

Thus, you're able to deliver a swift kick to the black Antonie's head and crack it. Its wounds leak SPOOKY energy.

It's a bit dazed, but grabs one of the black blobs and eats it. You can see its wound knit closed.

Dammit, it can heal!

Moreover, it seems that after eating the black blobs, the other black blobs also on the field are acting a bit more coordinated in a limited radius around the black Antonie.

That said, although it can heal, it doesn't seem like it healed its wound all the way.

You can damage it to death. It's just a damage sponge.

Anyway

You saw how the black Antonie was healing and you decide there would be no more of that.

You stomp as many of the black blobs as you could but they're multiplying like locusts.

Your speed is a bit hampered by the poison, as well as your other stats, but speed is the most pertinent here.

You're just barely fast enough that you're starting to thin out the horde of black blobs.

You're so effective that the black Antonie is sending blue Antonies just to protect the things long enough to reach it.

Thankfully, the red Antonie that you're temporarily allies with was having none of that and helps you disable its former allies.

Despite everything, the red Antonie was still reluctant to hurt the other Antonies.

You know it could be more efficient from fighting Antonies before.

Anyway, seeing you allied with the red Antonie, the black one decided it was having none of that and blasts it with the SPOOKY spell that lets it control other monsters.

You run towards the black Antonie. The blue Antonies it was controlling tried to shuffle into your way, but you merely stepped on them and used them as stepping stones.

The shuffling was a bit weird, perhaps the controlled Antonies lost some stats while under control? Antonies should definitely be faster than that.

Using a blue Antonie as a springboard, you leap into the air and smack the black Antonie with your foot. Its technique is disrupted and the red Antonie it was trying to control snapped out of it.

Although control wasn't broken for the other Antonies, they still just stood there dumbly as the black Antonie tried to regain his bearings.

As you smacked the black Antonie around, you can feel that you're close to vanquishing it. However, the black blobs also closed in and it would be very troublesome if the Antonie were to heal.

The red Antonie tries to help you by killing some black blobs, but it definitely wasn't as strong or fast as you.

You wonder if there was a way to disrupt the black Antonie's control by breaking its antennae. Ultimately, you decide against t his maneuver because of its risk.

The Antonie was close to death anyway and death would definitely disrupt its trick.

You smack its head with your feet one more time and it disconnects from the central purple gem.

The controlled Antonies keel over and die, much like red Antonies do when you tear off their antennae.

You have levelled up!

Now you know where they came from-- Those black things are possessing Antonie corpses. They can probably possess other monsters too, so you need to make sure the Krebs are warned.

For now, you retreat back to the Kreb Den. You still have two uses of Sulfur, so it might be a waste to Photosynthesize so soon.

You decide to save your Sulfur and throw the corpses down into the river instead.

There, the corpses are beset upon by a group of Shromp.

The black blobs SEEM to come from underground, but you don't sense anything that should be making them spawn. Not that that means much, since you can't sense SPOOKY energy anyway.

After more looking, you spot that weird, rose-shaped foreign monster again.

He's dumping a bunch of orange colored monster corpses on the ground, but doesn't seem to be having much luck getting the black blobs to possess them.

You recognize that rose monster killing off a bunch Skorps. It was working with that sunflower monster for... something.

Although it's not able to do so, you recognize that it's trying to get those orange spider corpses possessed. You don't want any more of those black Antonies going around and making things difficult, so you spray the rose monster with your Sulfurous Breath.

It's caught unaware so you follow up with a kick attack. Even with both your Sulfurous Breath and kick attack though, its ROCK elemental shell is extremely tough.

After recognizing you as a threat, it coats its body in SPOOKY flames, making it so if you attack it in melee, you receive a portion of the damage.

You wonder if you could reason with it. After all, it was working with that sunflower monster on something.

Besides, the sunflower monster was the strongest Z-rank monster you've ever fought and the rose monster is stronger than even that.

"Hey, uh... buddy? What are you doing? Why are you feeding the black blobs?"

Its purple eye turns to stare at you.

"Need... strong monsters. More level up... You not strong... come back when stronger... Fight me."

The rose monster then hits you with a blast of SPOOKY energy. Not enough to kill you, but the blast came with more pain than you can process, sending you flying to the edge of the Skorp territory.

Some Krebs come to help you and bring you to the Kreb Den...

When you arrive, your friends seem to be furious, wondering what happened do hurt you like this. They clack their claws in fury.

Going out to hunt while both injured and poisoned is very tempting. In this state, even a couple of Antonies should be enough to level you up.

However, you ultimately decide against it because the risk you're taking can lead to DEATH.

You also ask your friends to defend you while you Photosynthesize, so they don't do anything stupid like try to avenge you.

As you sleep underground, you idly wonder what that rose monster is doing... From what you can tell, it's trying to manufacture stronger monsters to fight.

Then what was the deal with the poison gem? How does it connect? Too many questions unanswered.

As your body heals, you wonder if you can do the same thing...

What do you do?

With your friends, you happen to find a swarm of black Antonies. You're outnumbered, but you're pretty sure you're not outgunned.

The last time you fought one of these, they were pretty weak without their monster control gimmick.

Your kreb friends rush in with Aqua Drill ready... except for the one that's been too injured. Looks like it hasn't learned Aqua Drill yet!

You start out by watching to make sure the Antonies don't cast that mind-control spell on your friends.

However, the Antonies are weirdly coordinated. When your friends gang up on one Antonie, they pick on your friend that hasn't learned Aqua Drill yet.

It takes your disruption to stop them from bullying him, but you very notably don't use Sulfurous Breath yet.

You only have one use left before you have to photosynthesize again.

The Antonies' coordination proves to be troublesome for your friends as they're not smart enough to be as coordinated as the Antonies...

Even with your support, the Antonies are slowly learning to deal with your disruption.

The Antonies are trying to escape...

Not wanting the ants to escape, you use your Sulfurous Breath. Your Kreb friends, using Aqua Drill, manage to dispatch some of the Antonies.

You're out of Sulfur now.

However, it's not the end of the fight. The remaining Antonies use their SPOOKY powers to mind-control your friends.

Your friends are resisting because their willpower is too strong to be mind controlled. They are dazed while trying to fight off the Antonies however.

The one Antonie that isn't trying to mind control your friends is calling black blobs for his allies to eat. What do you do?

Your friends continue to resist, occupying the black Antonies.

With your powerful kicks, it doesn't take much to vanquish the black blob-summoning Antonie.

However, even in its death, it appears to cause more problems for you.

A black version of those orange spider monsters-- since that sounds stupid, you'll call it a black Spoder-- appears. Where black Antonies eat the black blobs to heal, the black Spoder eats the fallen Antonies' corpse.

Before eating the corpse, you could sense that the black Spoder was slightly below you in level. Now it is above you by a significant step. The difference in level was almost the same as you and the sunflower rock monster.

If your friends weren't being occupied by the Antonies, you could beat this idiot easily. What do you do?

As long as the Antonies are occupied, it seems that your only choice is to fight the black Spoder one on one.

Luckily, the Spoder is easily distracted. Where it was once eyeing the Antonies for a quick snack, a simple kick earns you its ire.

Strikes from its club-like hands are enough to bruise you even with your high Blockness.

Luckily, such high Strongness doesn't come without cost. It's slow, and your kicks are causing hairline fractures to develop along its black exoskeleton.

Although you were steadily damaging it, its superior Strongness meant it was steadily pushing you back.

You bump into an Antonie and ruin its concentration, releasing your Kreb friend from its hold.

An Aqua Drill renders the Antonie dead.

The Spoder eyes the dead Antonie hungrily again, distracted from your fight.

>Punish the Spoder's distraction... Your Kreb ally will help you!

You whistle at the Kreb as you pummel the Spoder with kicks. Alone, you can only crack the Spoder's shell. But together?

You and the Kreb attack the black Spoder with blow after blow. The Spoder, not used to dealing with multiple attackers, can only defend in futility as it's steadily pushed back.

Your Kreb friend's Aqua Drill flows neatly into the hairline fractures caused by your kicks.

Soon, the Spoder drops dead.

It's simple to defeat the Antonies after that, and free your friends.

You have leveled up!

>Strongness

>Fastness

With the encounter over, you feel your body lighten as the last of the Poison Gem's payload is integrated seamlessly into your Onyuny layers. Combined with the level-up, you feel much stronger now, though it'll be harder for you to level up still.

You level up your Blockness and head back to the Kreb Den to photosynthesize.

Since you were only a little bruised up, your Photosynthesis also refilled your Sulfur.

There aren't any pressing matters at the moment. In fact, the Y-rank Kreb seems pleased at how the takeover is going. It seems that the Antonies have backed off, presumably after losing so many of their forces to the black blobs.

However, you are starting to get bothered by how slow it is to level up now that your level is pretty high. Maybe the rose foreigner has a point...

That said, you're curious where he's getting those Spoder corpses. They're clearly out of the range of your knowledge since you had no idea what they were, but they're clearly close enough that the rose foreigner can get a bunch of them easily. What do you do?

You finally get around to checking out the Roundman village. You've known it existed for a while, but you've been so busy with the Krebs that you've been a bit iffy on visiting it.

To your knowledge, some Roundmen have really bad allergic reactions to Kreb and Skorp that they turn into Clawbies, so it's not like their aversion to Kreb is unwarranted.

The village is surrounded by high log walls, but open on one side that you're able to freely wander in.

The Roundmen are immediately alert, but you tell them that you come in peace. They're a little surprised that an Onyun is sapient at Z-rank, but whatever.

There's also a foreign monster here. It's MENTAL elemental and its strength could easily be a match for the mysterious rose foreigner... if MENTAL element wasn't notoriously weak to SPOOKY, that is.

>So... What's the deal with this village?

You ask thr Roundmen what the deal is with the foreign monster. You've been seeing a lot of foreign monsters lately and it's starting to bother you.

"Wow, rude," remarks the foreign MENTAL monster.

"Eh, you've never heard of PSYKIDs? They're usually from a bit further east of here, but us Roundmen have been trading with them since before I existed. This PSYKID helps us with monsters us Roundmen can't handle and we feed him with turnips."

You tell them that doesn't explain the influx of SPOOKY monsters you've been seeing ever since the SKORPs died out.

"SPOOKY, you say? There aren't any local SPOOKY species, but if the SKORPS are wiped out as you say, then no wonder that's attracting SPOOKY monsters of all kinds. Wiping out an entire species is never a good sign."

"I'm not gonna get involved with any SPOOKY monsters, by the way," remarks the Psykid. "I hope you didn't come here to get help."

Hmm. These Roundmen seem to be uncomfortable around your presence. After all, most wild monsters don't get fully sapient until X-rank. Maybe you should do something to ease their worries.

You ask if there's anything that needs doing, acting casual about your odd sapience.

"There's a couple a Birbs stealing crops. Wily lil fellers. Run away as soon as they see the Psykid."

"I don't know how they keep reacting so fast to my presence."

Birbs are a species you DO know about. You know that they like to dig up Onyuns and eating them.

They're BORING elemental, so they're resistant to MENTAL and SPOOKY.

Based on the Psykid and Roundmen's accounts, the Birbs should have a tonne of FASTNESS. Being that you never really invested much into that stat, you're not sure you can be of help either.

What do you do?

You wanna check out the French Toast Fields again for anything new, but before you do, you ask the Roundmen what they are.

"Hmm, what do you mean? We're Roundmen. We're usually BORING elemental. Don't you know what ROUNDMEN are?"

You say you know the broad strokes, but not the specifics.

"ROUNDMEN don't really follow Ranks the same way other monsters do. We mutate based on external stimuli. If someone gets a really bad cold and stays that way for a while, they might turn into a NOSEMAN with the power to weaponize snot. That evolution would also be a rank up to Y-Rank, but a Y-Rank Roundman is nowhere near as strong as a normal Y-Rank. You could probably beat a Y-Rank Roundman the way you are."

You ask how Roundmen don't get completely slaughtered if they're so weak.

"Well, we have our tricks. We're sapient at Z-Rank so we just put that to good use."

Satisfied, you head to the French Toast fields.

You spot some Antonies here. They're probably trying to expand here after giving up on the contested territory. However, there's no way they could have gotten here without passing through the Kreb Den. What's going on?

Oh yeah, your Kreb buddies are here too, but you gotta keep them in line. They might engage the Y-rank CANDY SNEK if they see it.

By all accounts, Antonies being here doesn't make any sense. At least not without passing through Kreb territory.

This is upstream of the river too, so they can't have been washed down here by the river.

You make sure your friends stay calm, because you wanted to observe the situation.

From what you can tell, Antonies are bullying the Yykworms. The Y-rank Candy Snek isn't doing anything about it, or is busy with something else. Otherwise, you think it wouldn't be tolerating foreign monsters in its territory.

Could this be perhaps another plot by the rose monster? You're well acquainted with SPOOKY energy by now and it doesn't feel like it.

You successfully follow the Antonies back to a massive Antonie hill deep within the French Toast Fields. Interesting, but there's a chance that the Y-rank Snek will find it and just nuke everyone...

You've got a genius plan. Whatever is going on here, you're gonna put a stop to it. You just need to find that Y-rank CANDY SNEK.

It's actually not that hard to find it, considering Y-ranks are huge compared to Z-ranks. The hardest part was really trying to get your Kreb companions to behave.

There's the issue of the Snek being much faster than you, so running in a straight line towards the anthill wouldn't work. You had to bait it out by bullying Yykworms, leading it to the anthill.

The Snek quickly recognizes the foreign monsters, blasting them with CANDY energy.

That should be the end of that, right?

While you have a somewhat bad feeling about this, you don't want to risk your friends' lives on a hunch.

For now at least, the Antonies taking over the French Toast fields is no longer a problem and you retreat back to the Kreb Den.

The Y-rank Kreb is pleased that the invasion is going well, and it seems that the number of black blobs is lessening.

There really isn't much for you to do here any more and you think it may be time to move on.

The Roundmen have told you of a Psykid City east of their settlement. You expected it to be much closer, but as it happens, you walk for nearly a day without coming across the city.

You're following a road though, so you're pretty sure you aren't lost.

All you've come across are some Birbs, too fast and skittish to be easily caught and too weak to be worth it to chase. They're eating a bunch of black Colormentals, manifestations of a strong SHADOW elemental monster.

Investigating the source of the Colormentals leads you to the lair of a Y-rank monster. You have no idea what species it is, because it isn't local to where you spawned.

Makes you really appreciate the fact that this far out, YOU are the foreign monster.

The Y-rank monster either sucks at controlling its power, or it's releasing Colormentals on purpose.

The Y-rank monsters near where you spawned didn't release any Colormentals just by existing.

This Y-rank has the eloquence of an X-rank, apparently. You don't let that fool you though.

"Tell you what. There's a forest to the south with other PLANT elemental monsters in it. If you go past that forest and head further south, there are orange spider monsters called Spoders. I'll tell you my nefarious plan if you bring me ten Spoder corpses."

Psykid City really is full of just Psykids, huh?

You ask around to find the law enforcement, but the other Psykids are a bit wary of you. There aren't any Onyuns as sapient as you are, usually so they thought a wild monster managed to enter the city.

You are eventually directed to a building with the law enforcement in it.

You report the Y-rank SHADOW elemental monster doing some freaky shit just outside of town.

"Y-rank, you say? We can't exactly do anything about that since there aren't any Y-rank Psykids."

So it seems like the police will be useless... Unless you can get one of them to evolve to Y-rank.

Back in your old place, you could reasonably expect that you would be able to beat nearly anyone.

However, the Psykid that agreed to fight you managed to stop your usual barrage of melee attacks with its Psishield, then battering you with Psiball while you were suspended in the air.

Since this was just a spar, the Psikid didn't kill you, but you are left mode bruised than you are used to.

South of the trail, you find that biodiversity here is off the charts. You're used to biomes only having one or two species of monsters, but you actually find three.

You're not familiar with any of these species so you ask MISSILEHEAD what's up.

"Well, let's start with the obvious that they're all PLANT elemental monsters. Those mushroom ones are called SHROOMISH. There's a black variety that's rare, but these green ones are also MENTAL elemental. Those chest ones are called FROGSLIMES, which are PLANT and SLIME elemental."

The Shroomish's crying hits you with a wave of psychic energy that brings you to your knees, which the Shroomish takes advantage of by kicking you in the bodyface.

You'll have none of that crying and knock the Shroomish around with your feet. How does it even eat without a mouth? Freaky. Of course, not that you're any better since PLANT elemental monsters in general don't eat.

The Shroomish is one tanky son of a bitch and doesn't go down just from you kicking it around a bit. However, one of MISSILEHEAD's missiles finishes it off.

You gain 1 level.

It's been a while since a single monster caused you to level up. You gladly put the stat point in Strongness before finding some more Shroomishes to beat up.

"Hey, aren't these monsters, like, freakishly strong?" You ask Missilehead.

"No, that's about the correct level for this area, why?"

You explain that you'd moved in from an area to the west, where you were having trouble leveling up because the monsters were so weak.

"Oh, you're from one of those areas, then. Give it maybe 10 or so years and the monsters there will be just as vicious as the monsters here."

Looking for another Shroomish to beat up, you find one that's being accosted by some black Colormentals.

The extra party member is tempting, but you do want more levels.

"I'll make this easier for you, then. I don't think you'll be allowed to bring a wild monster into Psykid City."

Well, that settles it.

You kick the Shroomish you just saved in the face. It thought you were safe so it got pretty close before it started crying and hitting you with wave after wave of MENTAL energy.

Missilehead is trying to cast, but the waves of mental energy are disrupting his casting, so you do a barrage of kicks to shut the Shroomish up.

Missilehead FINALLY gets his Magic Missile off, but the Shroomish is still standing.

That's one tanky fucker.

It's trying to gather some MENTAL energy, but you quickly put a stop to that with more kicks.

You kill the Shroomish, but no level up this time. Killing something else at this point would let you level up, though.

While you look for your next prey, you notice that the number of Colormentals seems to be increasing...

You don't find any more Shroomish, but you do find one of those Frogslimes. It's busy eating a Colormental so you're able to sneak up on it.

You kick it up into the air, where MISSILEHEAD pelts it with two missiles.

The Frogslime is still alive after that and manages to belch some SLIME onto you, reducing your stats.

Trying to engage the Frogslime in melee gets you slimed AGAIN, bringing your stats further down. You're starting to hate SLIME elementals.

Being as slimed as you are, your attacks don't do as much damage as you expect and being slowed down means that the Frogslime manages to take a bite out of you.

It hurt like a motherfucker, but at least Missilehead manages to kill it with a couple more missiles after it starts retching, unable to handle the Sulfur coursing through your body.

"Geez, are you alright?"

You are obviously not alright. You'll need to photosynthesize to heal the chunk taken out of you.

However while you were feeling annoyed, you see a Psykid head south towards the Spoder territory. More alarming is that it was carrying a bunch of those black Colormentals

You're a bit torn on whether to put your stat in BLOCKNESS or FASTNESS, but you ultimately decide to put it in BLOCKNESS since you didn't want to spread your stats too thin.

Anyway, you get in the Psykid's way and ask him what exactly he's doing with those Colormentals.

"Oh, a cool old guy promised to give me 5 Psistones if I bring him 10 Spoder corpses. I had an idea and asked if he could give me some Colormentals to use as bait."

Oh no. There can't possibly be someone this stupid that they would actually accept a quest from an obviously evil SHADOW or SPOOKY elemental.

"That's a lot of money," Missilehead remarks. "You think we can get in on that deal?"

Damn, these two are just money hungry, huh? You have no idea how much money 5 Psistones is, but you're not sure it's worth having some kind of weird infestation of monsters.

You head back to the SHADOW elemental that has been giving out quests.

"Ohoho, I see you're back to take my deal," He says.

"Nah. I want a different deal," You say.

"We want cash," Missilehead interjects.

"We heard you offered a Psikid 5 Psistones to bring you 10 Spoder Corpses."

"That's true, I did. I'm gonna have to alter the deal since there are two of you though. How about 10 Psistones for 20 Spoder corpses."

"That's the same deal, right?" You ask, doing some quick math in your head.

"Are you sure you can actually do it, though? You're injured and slimy... There should be a lake you can wash yourself in in the Spoder territory, but it's full of Shromp."

It's been a while, and no one broke the tie. so...

You argue for just doing the 10 corpses for 5 Psistones. You didn't really want to make bank if it was going to further that SHADOW elemental's nefarious plans.

"You know, I thought the younger generation would have a bit more fire and ambition, but you're a pretty cautious sort aren't you" The SHADOW elemental says, with a twinkle in its eye.

Although the SHADOW elemental agrees to your proposal, Missilehead seems a bit annoyed that you didn't want to go for bank.

Of course if the Spoders are anything like the monsters in the forest, you'll need a good plan for killing them.

What's your Spoder killing plan?
>You do melee while Missilehead attacks from the rear
>You and Missilehead do long-ranged attacks and kite them without letting them attack.

You decide to wash off in the lake first, because the stat debuffs from the slime was making you feel heavy. Of course, the scent of onion from the chunk missing on your side attracted a few Shromp.

You're lucky to have Missilehead with you as he used his missiles to scare away the Shromp.

"You've been using that skill a lot, huh" you note. "Don't you run out of the resource you use to make it? I can only use Sulfurous Breath about three times before I have to Photosynthesize again."

"Oh, MACHINE monsters can cast our skills for free. The biggest hurdle is that we have to waste turns casting, which is why I need a melee attacker to help me."

That's actually pretty rough, you realize. You're way too used to skills being instant.

Once you've washed the slime off of yourself, you drag Missilehead to help you beat up some Spoders.

You use a different strategy than your usual melee-ranged combination with your party member so you can show off Sulfurous breath.

Using your new strategy, you manage to kill three Spoders, allowing you to level up. That feels like a bit of a scam because every single one of those Spoders was about as tanky as Frogslimes and Shroomishes.

"Hey, I'm almost done with my Spoder hunting. I wonder if you guys wanted to team up?" The Psykid you saw earlier approaches your party.

Of course, Missilehead doesn't want to team up with him, but he'll be a big help.

>Team up with Psykid, immediately getting the rest of the Spoders you need, but only level up once.

You decide to team up with the Psykid not because you can use the friends, but because you want this stupid sidequest to be over already.

You know that the SHADOW elemental is evil, and the SHADOW elemental (probably) knows that it's evil.

However, you aren't such a hotshot that people will willingly risk fighting a Y-ranked monster on your say so. Thus, the easiest way to prove that the SHADOW elemental is evil is to get this sidequest over with so he can do whatever obviously evil thing he's going to do.

"Are you alright, dude? You've been monologuing for 5 minutes there," Missilehead points out.

However, with both the Psikid's MENTAL prowess, your prodigious STRONGNESS and Missilehead's... whatever it is he has going on, you quickly finish off the corpses that you need.

With that all done, you are now Level 15.

Thus, you must once again, select a stat to increase:

>Strongness
>Blockness
>Fastness

And you must also level up one of your skills
>Photosynthesis
>Sulfurous Breath

Honestly, with your levels in both Sulfurous Breath and Strongness combined, you could probably start killing these monsters in two hits. Although it would still probably take you three to four hits if you don't use Sulfurous Breath.

With that out of the way, you bring the corpses back to the SHADOW elemental.

It seems delighted that you've brought back so many corpses so quickly.

It starts absorbing Colormentals back into itself and pouring SHADOWY energy into the corpses... turning them into black blobs.

"AH HAH, I knew it! I knew you were evil!" You exclaim.

"Uhh, I think I'm missing something here," interjects Missilehead

"Yeah, actually, how does summoning some weak black blobs make this guy evil again?"

You sigh. You get the feeling that this is gonna take too long to explain.

>Warn the city of the impending black blob bullshit

You upgrade your Fastness and hurry back to Psikid City. There were two guards at the entrance of the city and you try to explain the black blob issue.

"Hey aren't you the guy from yesterday trying to warn everyone of some Y-rank SHADOW elemental?"

You nod.

"And these black blobs... They revive the dead or something?"

You explain that it turns monsters into zombies.

"Hey, doesn't this guy sound like the PARANOID PSIKID?" jokes one of the guards.

"Haha, oh yeah, he does. Hey, are you friends with the PARANOID PSIKID?"

You mention that no, you don't know who that is.

Instead, you try to brief MISSILEHEAD on what the black blobs are. He listens with rapt attention, finding the zombie thing fascinating.

"What are you doing" Missilehead asks. You explain the concept of photosynthesis to him and he nods in understanding.

You tell him that it's gonna take you a day or so and to keep an eye out for any mysterious happenings or opportunities to level up.

When you awake, Missilehead isn't around, but you find him in the tavern. You ask him what's up.

"Some mysterious black monsters are attacking anyone who leaves Psykid City. No one has died because all the Psykids are pretty strong, but the monsters always fly away before anyone can retaliate. For now, the guards are asking people not to leave Psykid City without a party."

You tell him that's about what you expect, but you're surprised that the mysterious monsters seem to have some level of tactics. You tell him that the black monsters you encountered before were more like wild animals.

"Oh yeah, the Spikedogs at the north are getting pretty aggressive too. They're trying to expand into Clouddoge territory, which makes the Clouddoges spill over into Pupcess territory.

With nowhere to go, the Pupcesses are moving to the forest and eating the PLANT elementals there. There were some sightings of Y-rank FLORACESS in the forest as a result."

You ask what a Floracess is.

"It's one of the possible Y-rank evolutions of Pupcess. If there's a Y-rank Floracess around, we can't be going in the forest willy nilly since most dog monsters are pretty territorial."

What do you do?

You decide to seek out the PARANOID PSYKID the guards were talking about when you tried to warn them about black monsters.

"You don't need me for this, do you?" Missilehead shifts nervously.

Deciding not to pry, you just reply no before asking for directions to the PARANOID PSYKID's house.

The house wasn't what you expected. You thought it would be run down or something, but it's just a wood house with a straw roof, like every other building in Psykid City.

You knock and ask if the Paranoid Psykid lives here.

The person who answers the door is a Psykid with thick round glasses. Leaving aside the implications of that on Psykid City's industry, you notice that the house is pretty close on the outskirts, almost in Clouddoge territory.

"Yes, I'm the one they call the paranoid Psykid... You're not a SHADOW MINION, are you?"

You tell him that you are, in fact, the opposite and that you're looking for allies to combat the BLACK MONSTER menace.

"Oh god, it's starting? I don't have enough PSISTONES to absorb... I'm not strong enough."

You tell him to calm down and tell you what he knows.

"SHADOW MINIONS... there are three of them and they look like PLANT monsters... but they should be ROCK and SPOOKY elemental."

Well, that certainly sounds familiar, but the third one you've met was completely SHADOW elemental.

"No, that's the BIG KAHUNA that made them. They use zombies to ruin the ecosystem where there are SAPIENT Z-RANK monsters nearby... I don't know why."

You explain that they're probably trying to get more power since that's what one of the SHADOW MINIONS told you.

"They... talk? When I encountered one, they just tried to kill anything they can. The guards managed to drive them off, but I don't know what happened afterwards."

You mention the SHADOW MINION you killed, and that the red one was pretty smart when you talked to it. It sounded like the average Y-rank monster.

"Oh no... that means they're stronger... and smarter. Wait, did you say you managed to kill one of them? You have to help Psykid City!"

Your conversation is cut short when you hear a commotion outside.

There are a bunch of Psykid Police rushing to the city gate. Asking around, you find out that a bunch of black monsters attacked the gate guards, and then some Spikedogs (Who were not supposed to be in Clouddoge territory, you note) finished the guards off.

The police are trying to contain the frenzied SPIKEDOGS but are only able to reach a stalemate.

It doesn't take you long to find the black monsters. This is because they've been using hit and run tactics to agitate the Spikedogs, and were steadily moving northwards to the northern gate.

They don't seem aware of your presence yet, and you think you can easily kill one or two of them if you use Sulfurous Breath.

Using Sulfurous Breath you... holy shit, that pretty much just melted the two fliers at the back. They're still alive but... well you're pretty sure they don't want to be.

It seems that having your Strongness so high, combined with your high levels of Sulfurous Breath means you can just melt anything without an exoskeleton.

While the Spoder desperately tries to get the second Birb in its gullet, you decide you weren't going to have that and kick it.

Wicked cracks spread along the Spoder's body. It's furious that its meal was interrupted and gores you with its horns.

Paranoid Psykid does its best to hold the beast back with its psychic powers, giving you the chance to dropkick the Spoder and reduce it to gore.

You're pretty mangled, but that's nothing photosynthesis can't fix. You have a feeling that whatever you do, this will be over soon. What do you do?

>Head back to the east gate and help the police hold back the tide of Spikedogs
>Get Missilehead and find more of those black monsters

Also, that fight levelled you up.

You level up your FASTNESS (Hope I didn't miscount) and then go get Missilehead.

Missilehead doesn't seem to like the Paranoid Psikid too much and the feeling seems to be mutual. Apparently, the Paranoid Psikid went on a racist rant about the MACHINE elementals taking over when Missilehead first moved into town.

Well, the current situation seems to be dire enough that you can get them to work together.

You spot another squad of those black monsters and they're being led by a ROCK and CREEPY elemental monster that looks like a burnt out husk.

This time, there are three Birbs and two Spoders

What do you do?
>Sneak up and use Sulfurous Breath to get the monsters in the rear
>Engage the Spoders in melee while Paranoid Psikid and Missilehead use ranged attacks on the Birbs
>Pull out all the stops against getting rid of the SHADOW MINION leading them
>Try to convince the SHADOW MINION to stop attacking the Psikid City.
>Write-in

>>

>Sneak up and use Sulfurous Breath to get the ALL THE MONSTERS ALL OF THEM in the rear
Onyuns, we saved Sulfurous Breath just for this situation. We took damage in melee for that.

If that fails, I guess I'll vote for
>Engage the Spoders in melee while Paranoid Psikid and Missilehead use ranged attacks on the Birbs

You inhale fresh air, and your monster skill, Sulfurous Breath, turns that fresh air into an acidic gas.

As you exhale the foul concotion onto the rear fliers, their skin melts and they fall to the ground in agony.

This alerts the SHADOW MINION to your presence and it starts chanting a SPOOKY spell.

The Spoders take the opportunity to attempt eating the writing Birbs, but the combined attacks of Missilehead and Paranoid Psikid hold them back.

What's your next move?
>Attack the Spoders in melee
>Engage the SHADOW MINION in melee to interrupt its casting.
>Use your last Sulfurous Breath to hit all the enemies
>>

The Spoders were going to be a problem if they manage to eat those Birb corpses, so you get started on beating one of them up.

Like before, the black Spoder was incredibly tanky, taking a couple of your full-powered kicks and managing to retaliate with bites of its own before finally dying.

As for the other Spoder, even with Paranoid Psykid's psychic powers and Missilehead's Magic Missiles, it managed to take a few bites of Birb corpse before you manage to kick it away.

Although it wasn't able to power up as much as it could have, the few bites of Birb corpse power it up enough that it manages to headbutt you with its powerful horns before you manage to hit it a couple of times.

The Shadow Minion finally finishes its spell and fills the Spoder with SPOOKY energy, tendrils of purple flame emitting from the cracks in its carapace that your kicks caused.

The SHADOW MINION is attempting to run away.

It's time for Missilehead and Paranoid Psikid to earn their dinner so you leave them to fight the buffed Spoder.

They're not doing as much damage as you'd hoped, but they're at least kiting the thing to avoid getting damaged.

You throw your little Onyun-y body at the fleeing SHADOW MINION to prevent its escape. As you unleash your flurry of kicks, you realize that this Shadow Minion isn't particularly strong.

If you had to rate it, it's a bit stronger than the sunflower SHADOW MINION. However, you'd long passed that point in your journey so the SHADOW MINION is so much weaker than you.

It seems that its big thing is being able to buff those black zombies.

As you beat the last of the life out of the Shadow Minion, you hear a sickening crunch.

You hear the sound of machinery grinding to a halt as Missilehead's arm is wrested away from his body by the black Spoder.

A few paces away, orange thread binds the Paranoid Psikid.

Jesus christ, you turn away for 5 minutes...

You stomp the Spoder, and shatter its carapace to pieces.

You make your way back to the Kreb Den, much stronger than when you left. Monsters that used to give you trouble in this area now scurry away in fear of your fury.

You seek out the Y-Rank Kreb who is overjoyed at your return.

It seems that they've successfully expanded into the formerly contested territory and only suffer the occasional Antonie attack.

Powerful Black Monsters occasionally attack, but it's rare enough that your three Kreb buddies can take them down with Aqua Drill.

It seems that an era of peace is destined for your home.

You tell the Krebs your war stories from the east, and about how Psikid City was besieged by SHADOWY SPOOKY monsters.

Your Kreb friends tell you of rumors of powerful Spoders to the south.

The Y-rank Kreb has aspirations of expanding into that territory, but it's guarded by a powerful Y-rank Spoder and Spoders are easily as strong as two or three Z-rank Krebs.

However, that is a story for another time.

For now, you will enjoy countless peaceful days with your Kreb buddies.
