/qst/ - Quests

The year is 1374 DR. Sixteen years have passed since the Time of Troubles, when the gods were made humble, and forced to wander the Realms as mortals. With the ascension of the mad god Cyric, Prince of Lies, and the recent return of the tyrant god Bane, Lord of Darkness, the future of Faerûn seems increasingly uncertain. It falls to bold individuals who possess an abundance of cunning, might, and determination to shape the future... should they be up to the challenge.

A pregnant pause overtakes the lounge as your awesome presence bears down upon the cornered trio of Tenpenny and his two hired killers. The half-man's trembling hands desperately search his person, fishing a paper box of cigars produced in a foreign land from the pocket of his gaudy silken suit. Grasping a single cylinder of rolled tobacco with a hammy fist, he returns the box from whence it came and brings the cigar to his lips, gasping for air as he chomps down on its end.

The Master of Guilds cannot muster the courage or sense to light it.

Your arrival, so it would seem, has caught your prey off-guard. Moreover, Tenpenny's underlings seem reluctant to act without his instruction. The orc-blooded oaf grins and rolls his shoulders, eager to match his skills against yours, but professional enough to restrain himself. By contrast, the mage woman is patient and composed, her placid expression conveying that she feels reasonably confident in her chance of absconding with her life.

Alas for them, the High Captain's paladins are behind you, and his soldiers have encircled the manor. With teleportation barred by the High Sorcerer's magics, their capture is all but assured, even if they somehow managed to escape you. Still, you feel that you have earned the right to accept the credit of seeing this petulant blob of a man undone yourself.

For the moment, you have the initiative, and with it comes the power to dictate the direction of this encounter.
>[Will] If they get on their knees and beg for their pathetic surfacer lives, I will turn them over to the High Captain with all of their limbs attached to their bodies.
>First I am going to kill Tenpenny's drudges. Then I will beat him within an inch of his life. Then I might consider seeing him put in a cell.
>I went through the trouble of exposing this ludicrous scheme of his. I believe that I am entitled to answers for numerous questions before he is inevitably jailed.

Supporting, though I'm not sure Jez is good enough at Common to muster such witticism in those exact words. Since I imagine her with a Korean or Russian accent, it's even funnier to hear in my head in broken English:

Adopting a less aggressive stance, you bring the Dark Fantasy closer to your body and allow the flat surface of the sword to rest atop your shoulder. "Give me answers," you command. Tenpenny leaps in place, launching a stack of papers into the air before he quickly finds himself landing on his posterior. The Master of Guilds trembles and whines, yet nonetheless he shows no intention of conversing with you. Furious, you stamp your foot in his direction and growl. "Or I crush your cock."

"C-come on now!" He yelps, wiping the sweat accumulating on his face with the sleeve of his coat, only for more to ooze forth from his pores to replace it. "I ain't done nothin' to ya, dark! No, ma'am, I don't got no problem with the darks, I swears on the Protector and Provider herself! Ol' Rupee Tenpenny ain't hurt nobody! Hee hee!" He squawks. "What is it you want? Money!? My council spot!? J- just name ya price and we can-" You advance a single step, an act which is sufficient to silence him.

"Answers," your repeat. You may choose no more than three.

We can always try to learn more about Greycastle at a later date and Tenpenny seems like the type to try and throw dirt on the other council members when cornered anyway, even when not explicitly asked to do so.

"Tell me how you got the money. From the council," you growl. The sweat-soaked half-man wipes his face again. "I ain't gots no idea what you're-" you stomp your foot. He squeaks. "Y- you got it all wrong! I ain't done nothin'! It was all Greycastle! He was the one skimmin' off the top, givin' kickbacks ta his boys from the taxes he collected! Me and my guys was just takin' a cut for changin' a few numbas around here and there, honest!"

"And?" You add expectantly, suspecting that he is omitting critical information.

"Aaaaaaand..." he continues sheepishly, "Well, maybe I did lose a couple million in assets here and there whenever a big civic project got pushed. So what? Wasn't nothin' but a d-drop in the bucket, amiright?" You would not know. Phaere was the one with a mind for numbers, with Tatherin being a close second. All of this may as well be spellcraft to you.

"I don't care. Now tell me where this 'vault' is," you state, remaining wary of Tenpenny's hired help. The Master of Guilds must be paying them an exorbitant wage, as they exercise a calm professionalism even as the sound of the paladins working their way through the floor below crescendos. Evidently, they will only act if ordered. "I ain't gots no idea what you're-" starts Tenpenny.

"Vith'ir," you interject. "Tell me now."
>>

"Just down the hall! Right behind the art collection! All I gots in there is my humble life savings. Hells, take it all if ya want!" He cries, kneeling over to grab at the scattered papers, which he hurriedly stuffs into the trunk. "Maybe if I know how to get in," you follow up. Tenpenny swallows spit and shakes his head frantically. He grinds his teeth and sneaks a look at you pleadingly, visibly reluctant to volunteer this information.

Groaning, his shoulders sag as his attention returns to his trunk. "The password is 'Emitia,'" he mumbles. You infer that the word can somehow permit entry into the 'vault,' although this does raise a number of other questions. Given his history with the girl, this is not wholly unexpected, yet you cannot help but be perplexed by his obsession with her. Never have you met an individual so irrationally fixated on another. It would almost be a compelling drama, if you did not despise this revolting little male.

"So," you huff, "that thing. It looks like Emitia-" you begin, only to be cut off by Tenpenny. He slams his meaty fists against the trunk and glowers at you, his visage flush with outrage. "Shaddap!" He screams, waggling a sausage-like finger in your direction. "You wouldn't understand!" The mongrel orcish half-breed presses his muscled hand against his chiseled face and sighs, suggesting that this is not the first time that the half-man has gone on such a rant.
>>
>>5779851
"That little whore took my heart and tore it all up! Ever since I saws her, I knew it was love at first sight! She gots this smile, see..." he trails off, shooting a vacant distant stare past you. "And a laugh, and a way she talks. The kinda personality that just gets inta ya head. She's just made different!" He yawps, banging his fists against the trunk once again. "Ya know that they say people with red hair is blessed by Sune? It's like the goddess created her just for the Realms! There ain't nothin', I mean nothin', like her!"

You place a hand at your side and raise an eyebrow, clicking your tongue. Admittedly, you find all of this rather amusing, in a pitiful sort of way, though your question remains unanswered. "Fine. But that thing you... do you mean it is... or, have you been..." you exhale. It is not as though you did not experiment when you were younger, and although each memory grows ever more shameful as you have matured, at the least you can proudly attest to the fact that you have never copulated with a corpse.

"She," he corrects, "is not finished. I gave that bitch Emitia everything, everything! I gave up more for her than you can imagine!" He wheezes. So unfit is he that shouting is enough to deprive him of breath. "And I still get burned!" He bites his lip and reorganizes his contracts with newfound purpose, the barest hint of resolution seeping through his typically craven demeanor. "Maybe I can't have her. But I can do the next best thing: build her. All I needs is more money and more time, and so help me, I'm gonna see it done if it's the last thing I do!"
>>
>>5779853
Everything comes together in your mind. Tenpenny had employed the dark priest to create a facsimile of the object of his unwanted affections in a desperate bid to possess Emitia in some capacity. In the fetid heart of Tenpenny's home, he harvested the flesh of human girls, stitching them together using his fell magics and shaping them into a sort of miserable creature. Given its inert state, you reason that it has yet to be 'born,' in a manner of speaking.

Hmm...

Really? >>5780079
I mean, not so much about those, but more so how she's fond-ish of Ilanis, enough to worry about the Stag at Bay patrons causing trouble for her, fearing she'd been replaced by a doppelganger when she went over to the Dreaming Dragon after Emitia, and risking a seizure trying to visit again during disco night. Perhaps it's some sort of coping mechanism for the lack of her own kids, maybe?

>Perhaps it's some sort of coping mechanism for the lack of her own kids, maybe?
Jezyrene does not want to raise a child, she wants to conform the expectations of her culture. If she can't be a priestess, and she can't spawn a dozen little serial killers, then she's a "bad drow." When the topic comes up, she usually comments that she'd rather give the infant to someone else than take care of it. Although, maybe anons feel that interacting with Ilanis might be her way of working through this attitude?

>>5781449
Large-scale transactions are made using ingots of precious metal. A 10 pound ingot of gold would be worth 500 gold pieces. And of course, a big civic project in a sizeable city like Everlund would require hundreds of hands in labor that would all need to be paid, on top of the cost of importing materials. Not impossible to secretly "misappropriate" ten thousand gold here and there on such a scale, and Tenpenny has been involved with the council for years.

>>5781579
No, she's just the sort of person that says what she wants to say in a few sentences. Unless she's trying to explain something or tell a story.

There you stand, mouth agape, as you listen to this pitiable creature rave incoherently about some 'lost love,' as the surface-dwellers might call it. You rack your brain once, twice, a third time, trying to assemble a sentence to no success. Never in all your years have you encountered such a miserable specimen. You cannot even muster the breath to utter a word of derision, lest it be wasted on this worthless thing.

"What's that?" He huffs. "Nothin' you wanna say? Figures." Tenpenny slams the trunk shut and fixes the collar of his shirt whilst shaking his head. "I know what's gotta be done." You twirl your blade in your hand, tracing circles through the thin cigar-haze of the lounge, reflecting on his words. It is true that you haven't the smallest inkling of what drives surfacers to such strange compulsions; what you do know for certain is that Tenpenny is a gutless, tasteless, artless parasite, who debases everything of value that surrounds him through mere proximity to his overlarge mass.

"Vith'ir. Dos rewt in'loil de'shu. Mechrola dosst kulauk lueth el," you hiss, advancing toward him. The fear in his eyes as you shout him down is palpable, but it is superseded by his resolve to see his morbid project through. "Gemme outta here!" Quacks the Master of Guilds, compelling his underlings into action. The mage woman jabs the half-man's shoulder with her index finger, causing both his body and the trunk to disperse into a cloud of translucent mist that sluggishly creeps toward you.
>>
>>5782856
Falling back your prior experiences with odd magics, instinct warns you that the gaseous mass that has begun sailing in your direction is somehow caustic or poisonous, prompting you to swiftly evade it. Yet as your feet work to remove you from the cloud's path, you observe that it maneuvers through the air with a certain purpose and direction that bestows upon it an uncanny living quality. Tenpenny is that cloud, you deduce, as he languidly passes through the doorway and into the hall.

A new complication arises; how, exactly, are you meant to apprehend a body of insubstantial mist? Breaking into a sprint, you commence your pursuit of Tenpenny, whose speed seems less than a third of yours. Down the hall you race, rapidly gaining on the half-man until a blunt pain across the frontal half of your body inexplicably brings you to a halt. You slam against a frosty, rigid surface that bars your passage, a sort of 'ice wall,' which has manifested from nothing, and stumble back. More confounding magecraft, you realize.

Shaking off the surprise of your unexpected impact, you pivot on your heel and reflexively raise your weapon to defend yourself. The half-breed orcish ruffian strides toward you with a relaxed, confident gait, stretching the muscles of his arms which he means to exercise against you. The mage woman remains far behind, visibly fatigued from the exertion of her potent magics. She takes care to ensure that her more physically capable comrade stands between you and herself.

However you intend to capture Tenpenny, you will not be going anywhere until these two have been dealt with.

Hmm...

Stretching from wall to wall, a barrier of opaque ice is at your back, preventing you from pursuing Tenpenny. Ahead of you are his toadies, who diligently act to defend the deplorable half-man. There is only one logical resolution to this encounter. You are going to gut them like cave eels.

The mongrel plods down the hall, coming to a stop several paces ahead of you. His position allows him to prevent you from reaching his comrade, who can safely harass you with her spells from a distance. Knowing full well the threat that a talented magician can pose even to a warrior as formidable as yourself, you decide that she must be cut down immediately. Returning the Dark Fantasy to its sheath, you race like mad toward the orcish mongrel, who swings the sinewy thews of his arm toward your torso, aiming to land a devastating blow to your body.

Fortunately, in a contest of agility, you are much quicker than your foe. Demanding additional strength from the muscles in your legs, you bound upwards, placing your hands on his shoulders to leverage as support whilst you vault over him. With practiced grace, you land on your feet directly behind him, bolting at his compatriot before the poor fool can even realize what has transpired.

The human woman has not lost her composure. During your approach, she has been singing an incantation in her exotic language, nurturing a growing white mote of radiance between her hands. Placing your hand on the hilt of your weapon, you make to slice her exposed torso in twain with a single stroke of your blade when your world is flooded with brightness. The searing pain in your skull is a telltale sign that you have, for the second time this night, been struck blind. This must be her magic at work.

To your benefit, her spell is far less impressive than the devilry taking place at the Dreaming Dragon. For one, you are not on the floor convulsing. Nor are you feeling in any way nauseated. In fact, you can make out the amorphous outlines of the objects in your surroundings, a reassuring sign that your vision is already recovering. The issue should soon correct itself.

Your auditory organs, however, are functioning as intended. The hefty thuds of the mongrel grow louder with unexpected rapidity. Bringing your weapon to bear, you reposition yourself such that both of your opponents are in your awareness and angle the Dark Fantasy at him. Lines and shapes swim through your vision, impossible to interpret, but a meaty thump followed by a pain in your ribs informs that you have been struck by his fist.

You cannot properly defend yourself like this.
>[Strength, Attack] The mongrel is directly in front of me. My sight fails me, but my muscles will not.

The mage is still in range, so Jez should have her light blindness bane of -3 counteracted by the +3 to hit mages. This should absolutely dumpster her health and prevent her from further spellcasting.

You trace the vague outlines of objects that shift to and fro in your eyes, picking out a silhouette from the monochromatic haze. Four limbs, slender, seemingly upright; this could be the mage woman, and you are willing to risk swinging blindly into the air if it means that you could slay her before she unleashes more of her odious magics. Lowering your frame, you draw your arm back and swing at the humanoid shape, tracing a broad arc through the air with your weapon. Robbed of sight, the speed and power of Orb Alur may yet compensate for your deficient visual sense.

The familiar sound of flesh being sliced followed by the sound of a corpse collapsing onto the mansion floor provides you with auditory confirmation that you have hit someone. You spin your sword in your hand out of habit, pulling it closer to yourself as the mongrel's heavy footsteps draw near. Experience compels you to evade, although doing so would be no small feat in your present condition.

The full weight of the mongrel's brawn impacts against you, sending you reeling back until you collide with a cabinet. As though you have been struck by a large bludgeon from all directions, the entirety of your body is subject to a crushing pain as colors and shapes flood your awareness, an indication that your vision is returning. The mongrel marches over the remains of his dead compatriot, whose severed head lies across the room.

Your body warns you that it can sustain only so much punishment, but otherwise, you are fit to continue the battle.

Jez has had some absolutely insane rolls throughout this quest honestly. If she were just a tiny bit more unlucky, she'd probably be dead.

Actually, speaking of the ray attack from the priest from earlier, the breakdown for the calculation was as follows.

With sight restored, you know that you are the greater warrior, possessing skill and experience far exceeding the mongrel's. Driving your blade forward, you outline a narrow curve with its tip, exploiting the superior reach of your armament to leave a deep laceration in the orc-blood's abdomen, conserving the energy to whip your weapon back and draw a deep gash across his chest. As though he feels nothing at all, your foe throws his fist toward you with reckless abandon. Effortlessly, you maneuver yourself beneath his arm and allow the momentum to carry your sword upward as you rise, tearing through the brawny flesh of his backside until you cleave his spine in twain.

Your opponent's substantial musculature collapses into a meaty heap, but you cannot spare even a moment to revel in your victory. Circumspect, you approach the wall of ice stretching across the hall, which yet persists despite the demise of its creator. The rocky, opaque barrier prohibits you from accessing the rest of Tenpenny's estate, and you can envision only one way through. Holding the Dark Fantasy half-sword, you employ its magically fortified steel as a crude pick, chipping your way through the wall's frigid layers.

At last, a segment of the wall gives way, allowing you passage. Although, your target, Rupert Tenpenny - nor the amorphous smog that he has become - are anywhere to be found. According to the dastard himself, the vault is located somewhere in the gallery that contains his art collection; a likely destination for him to select, you reason. Then again, he could have just as easily lied under duress. His personal quarters, further down the hall, remains unexplored, to say nothing of the possibility that he fled upstairs.

At the least, you feel confident that he could not exit via a window in his altered state. Each seems to have been shut for the night, denying him escape given that he presently has no hands.
>My instinct tells me that he fled for the vault. I can intercept him there.
>I shall have a look around his quarters. Perchance he returned to retrieve something essential?
>The garden upstairs is worth searching, and I intend to do so immediately.
>>
>>5792648
Right, well Tenpenny's whole thing was to see his Emitia sex doll completed, even if was the last thing he would ever do, along with specifying that all he needed was just money and time. This would make me assume that he would be heading to the vault to get exactly that, but I don't see him doing that after having told Jez about it. Furthermore, I would assume that he would have already gone to his quarters prior to even meeting Jez in the first place. Thus, I think he probably would have attempted to flee to the garden upstairs. Plus, getting up high while under the effects of gaseous form makes sense, as in order to escape you would definitely want to get blown away by the wind.

Urging your aching body onwards, you feel compelled to search Tenpenny's suite, wondering to yourself whether he has left behind something crucial in his haste. It could also be that the infrastructure offers some alternative method of escape, with his body in its gaseous state. Bounding forward at the limit of what your body can maintain, you run until your throat is hoarse, entering what appears to be a several interconnected rooms that could easily serve as a modest home.

A lavatory and a bedroom, both joined together by a spacious living area. The walls are black, decorated by mesmerizing patterns of gold leaf shaped into striped hexagons. At your feet is a laboriously cut and polished floor of dark igneous stone, atop which rests an outrageously large rug of white silk. Before a roaring fireplace is a leather reclining chair suitable for a giant, with the unmistakable imprint of Tenpenny's posterior pressed into the seat, and above it, a tacky portrait of Emitia Rouzet in her signature red silk, standing alone in a field of surface flowers.

Most importantly, there is no half-man to be found here.

Unless he was willing to risk being roasted, your prey assuredly did not escape through the fireplace. The question remains: where is Rupert Tenpenny?

The vault is where a teleportation circle is, though Lael is preventing anyone from teleporting out. Furthermore, I doubt he would have the means to teleport out anyway as you would typically need a caster to facilitate that, and Jez killed that one woman. As such, the question is where a secret exit would be. I think it would be more likely that he's heading to the dungeons, as that's the only place that would have a secret tunnel.

You bite your lip, dashing for the art gallery in which the vault allegedly resides. This is a place of vibrant limestone, filled with amateurish paintings of various surface goddesses depicted in baudy poses. Had you stepped in here several minutes earlier, the object of Tenpenny's obsession would have been plainly obvious. One such image, that of the goddess Sune displaying her bare posterior, has been removed from the wall; where it once rested is a half-opened iron door with a letter lock below the handle that has been manipulated to spell out 'EMITIA.' Beyond is a passage leading into a poorly lit room fortified by iron walls.

Curiously, this place is empty, sans a handful of lonely gold pieces left abandoned here and there. In the room's center is a spell circle etched into the floor, the sort that you recall Phaere could make, although a large segment of it has been removed by what you presume to be a chisel. Typically, such circles emit a sort of odd magic even when not in use, but your minimal understanding of the mage's trade leads you to deduce that this spell is totally inert. This must be the vault, although someone has plundered its treasures and destroyed the only means of escape prior to your arrival.

The question then is, who could have done such a thing?

With all haste, you rush to the only other location where you believe that Tenpenny could have fled. You journey into the rank black heart of the mansion a second time in pursuit of the vile half-man, only to find it completely undisturbed. The morbid replica of Emitia sits dead still, kept company by the unconscious human girl and the dark priest, whose goddess has not seen fit to return his soul to this world. There is naught else to be found here but the stink of death and the fleshy mountains of 'sculpting material' which the priest discarded.
>>
>>5801829
Returning to the highest floor, you rest your weapon on your shoulder and peer through the window into the streets below. The High Captain and the deplorable half-breed apprentice watch on warily as the paladins march nearly half a hundred prisoners out through the estate's front entrance and search them. Rupert must have hired an entire mercenary company for his protection, by the look of it, and you have avoided an intense battle in bypassing them.

From room to room you comb the building, hunting for even the slightest hint of Tenpenny, turning up nothing. The sound of Sten's holy warriors marching up the stairs to scour the place prompts you to join them, exchanging what knowledge you have found during your separate ventures. It would seem that the defenses of the lowest floor were rather formidable, and served their purpose admirably in allowing the half-man all the time he needed to manage his escape.

Wiping the blood from your weapon, you shake your head and curse, returning the Dark Fantasy to its scabbard. The fact of the matter is that Tenpenny is gone, but this was no failure. At the very least, you have succeeded in ending his influence over Everlund by bringing his schemes to light, removing him from the council through doing so. It will have to be enough, for now.

Agility has been used for attack and directly increases defense. Increasing strength can help out with attacks, and is definitely felt during power attacks, but I feel that it's value is overshadowed by what is offered by agility, especially considering that Jez so far has typically been fighting alone. As such, abilities that allow Jez to attack multiple people at once like whirlwind attack are incredibly important. Furthermore, due to Jez often being alone, defense becomes all the more important. Aside from a general defense and attack increase via agility, Jez would be further able to actively apply attack+defense modifiers in battle via a will increase, along with furthering her resistance checks. As for the style choice, provided that Jez continues to use stuff like the bustenhalt, the catsuit, etc, she will gain all benefits of the style nigh constantly, along with an increase to dodge tanking abilities through whirlwind strike, and likely elusive dance. The other style would probably see constant use thanks to Jez likely keeping up her use of the Dark Fantasy, and the new pulverize foe probably allows Jez to delete people, but due to Jez being alone, better defensive capabilities on the fly are probably more useful.

By the end of this, Jez would have an absolutely insane 22 defense (who knows how high it could get if she buys some actual armor), and a nice 27 power to let her really bust out abilities. Furthermore, as strength or agility is used for attacks on a contextual basis, it's easy to simply force attacks to use one stat or the other by simply applying a feat like whirlwind strike while retreating, etc.

Wouldn't it be funny if the "jack-of-all-trades" approach we've been taking to Attributes actually makes things a lot more difficult in the long run?
>>
>>5802592
Yeah in general it's good to focus on stuff. It's pretty funny to see a board that spawned from tg going the route of not focusing an attribute in a D&D quest. I assumed that as Jez is a centuries old elf fighter that her statline is incredible in comparison to the average adventurer, so just padding everything wouldn't hurt in combat via the combat feat system. That way, Jez doesn't run into the classic fighter problem of being amazing in combat, but absolute ass in regards to literally everything else. Don't typically get to see fighters brewing potions and doing library dives, but Jez gets to do that.
>>
>>5802592
I suppose, but doesn't the system break down (outside of combat) if we have 20 in a stat and we only roll beneath or equal to a stat to determine its success? Since we roll a d20
>>5802618
I guess it could be related to use getting "levelups" or milestones out of things that are not purely combat too. Though it's usually the culmination of a series of events, like when we danced at the inn ages ago and leveled up.

Not to mention, most players are easily distracted by the shiny. Whenever it has been infront of us, many players have expressed an interest to learn some magic from Amaranth. Which has not been touched upon in a loooong time, for example.
>>
>>5803028
We've never had a chance to really get our reward from Amaranth as Jez has always been busy. I'd love to finally get around to taking the test, though it's fairly apparent that Jez would fail considering that she's been repeatedly stated to have a poor aptitude for magic. I wasn't expecting Jez to become a wizard or something, but an eldritch knight/spellsword prestige class would be nice. Probably not in the cards though.

The lingering pain that you have sustained serves to remind you of the foundational instruction you received on the Bautha Z'hin Style; of the importance of reading your foe's movements, and learning to attack from their blind spot while they are distracted. While not as lethal as Orb Alur, integrating the more simplistic lessons of Bautha Z'hin into your swordwork offers advantages that you cannot afford to pass up. Tonight, you recognize that you are beginning to approach the limits of what your body can do.

There is a limit to how quick, how strong you can be, and it could be that you have reached it.

Leaving the estate and the mess therein to Sten's underlings, you rejoin the High Captain and the apprentice boy, stretching your neck. "He got away?" Asks Sten, with an inflection which suggests that he already knows the answer. You nod. "Damn," he grunts, placing a fresh cigarette in his mouth. "Greycastle was gone before we even got there. Torched his office, too. Cywir said he sensed something bad this morning. Guess he wasn't wrong about that." The aged paladin rubs his neck.

"You tried your best, Sandra," chirps the boy. "But in the end, it seems your best just wasn't enough. I guess Everlund will have to keep holding out for a hero. They've got to be sure, and they've got to be soon, and they've got to be larger than-"
>>
>>5803962
"Shaddap, Twinkle. We're gonna bring 'em both in, no matter what it takes," states the paladin mirthlessly, shifting his attention back towards you. "Anyway..." Sten shakes his head. "Normally, the council's supposed to give some kinda reward for risking your neck to help out, but this shit is gonna take more than a tenday to get sorted. This ain't really my style, but we're gonna have to get back to you later," he huffs. "But you'll get what you deserve. Count on it."

"Fine," you say, rolling your shoulders. No doubt, the remaining members of the Council of Elders have their work cut out for them. Admittedly, you have earned a respite after the today's adventures. Right now, victory is yours to enjoy as you see fit.

>>
>>5803972
Right, question time. How long does the frightened bane last if Jez uses elusive dance? Do they have to make a will test every turn, or does it only last for a single turn?
Seeing as Jez just got a feat that is reliant upon having her full agility bonus, are there any superior armor sets to what Jez is wearing now that are mundane, or has Jez reached the limit of mundane armor and would have to look into magic armors? Would something like mithral fullplate retain a agility penalty, or would its lightweight magical construction get past such issues? (Not expecting Jez to ever get something like this, that would carry an insane cost)
>>
>>5804021
>How long does the frightened bane last if Jez uses elusive dance?

Creatures are allowed a roll to try to remove it every turn, modified by the Bane in this case. And of course, some beings cannot become afraid.

>are there any superior armor sets to what Jez is wearing now...

As we've seen before, there are three types of armors. Light (low Armor, full Agility bonus), medium (some Armor, half Agility bonus) and heavy (high Armor, no Agility bonus). Mithral fullplate would be a medium armor because of its special material. As for Jez, she'll have to rely on leathers and skimpy minimal armors if she wants to leverage her full Agility. But many interesting items will soon become available for purchase.

Thanks for running!
How different would fighting from entrance of the compound would've been? How did Tenpenny flee? What would've been the reward for nabbing him here?

>How different would fighting from entrance of the compound would've been?

It would have involved more combat, and of course battling it out with Tenpenny's bodyguards would have been waiting at the end. There were several "wonders" hidden on the first floor that would have alluded to his interesting hobbies, like a shrine with Emitia's hair/nail clippings and records detailing how he procured "material" for the Sharran priest's experiments.

>What would've been the reward for nabbing him here?

Tenpenny would basically have a meltdown and divulge even more of his secrets while doing so, including the reason why Greycastle hired Jez in the first place instead of sending her away. There would have been several Jez-flavored reactions to this, but I'll leave those to your imagination. Lael would also try to take credit for "singlehandedly capturing the criminal."

>How did Tenpenny flee?

I'm sure a certain burglar could tell you, for a reasonable fee...

thanks for another thread. Time to hassle Amaranth or someone about dragonsongs of friendship...

Any chance you could show with an example how spellcastingi works, mechanically? End of next thread is fine too. Been curious what that would have looked like, if we played a spellcaster. Also, the mechanics you've shown so far are pretty good for a quest, so it's just fun to see.

Oh, and have you had time to finish bg3?

>Any chance you could show with an example how spellcastingi works, mechanically?

Having magic would take the whole quest to adjust to, but I'll see if I can quickly go over the big points before I get back to working.

>Learning Spells
The only conventional way to for a character to learn spells is from reading scrolls. Although, Lael could pick up a few from certain encounters.

>Preparing Spells
A character can only have a certain amount of spells that they know "ready" to cast and has to pick which ones they want after a rest. This amount is half Intellect score for Lael.

>Counterspell
Spells can sometimes be nullified before they are cast. This can be done by having the spell Dispel Magic prepared and succeeding on a Will check that is heavily biased in favor of the stronger mage.

>Spells
Using one costs Power proportional to how strong it is. No two spells are truly alike - many offer rolls to resist the effect, some create things that are more dangerous than spells themselves, and a few just do bad things to the target with no chance to resist at all. They follow the letter of their description even when doing so would defy common sense (e.g. Fireballs work perfectly fine underwater or in a vacuum with no hindrances). These can be further augmented with feats.

>Use Magic Device
Sam is unique. He cannot use conventional magic, but he can use wands, scrolls, rings and what have you to cast spells, building up an arsenal of magical gadgets to help him on his quest.

>What about Jez?
Jez is a bitter woman who says that she relies on her own strength instead of magic nonsense as a way to avoid admitting that she has no talent. But she is not doomed - she has more Health than any character and her Defense is exceptionally high. She also hits harder than anyone (except when Sam can land a backstab) and is the best in a straight fight.

Dreams of a gish prestige class fall further out of sight

Are you implying we might have a chance to pick up Tenpenny's trail again?

Jez can barely speak for HERSELF.

The adventure continues.
