/qst/ - Quests

Jail Quest: a text adventure occasionally illustrated.

A night of drinking and a failed attempt to cheat on cards had landed you the strangest job slash community service sentence you've ever had: ensuring Gongalla Gaol survives the reality storm called Singularity.
Now you travel around with your employer and a handpicked crew to survey the four Reality Anchors. Hey, beats being tarred and feathered, right?

Previous thread:

Gongallaverse:
https://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/qstarchive.html?tags=Gongalla%20Gaol

You are Rosa Montagni, and right now you're speaking face-to-face with a living goddess, recounting your journey so far - you were telling her about how your neph- er, cousin Craig helped apprehend the former director of an orphanage in The Ossuary, and the subsequent journey to Goblinton, where you witnessed a bandit ambush on an armed Inner Empire motowagon (and wisely stayed away). Then you detailed traveling the Goblin tunnel networks, meeting a childhood friend while checking up on your grandpa, and currently you were recounting about the investigation on the strange-masked men who spoke an unknown foreign language, and how Valencio captured one of theirs so you could fit grandpa's old prison collar on them - strictly exploiting the collar's auto-translation feature, of course. Oh, and how Craig let loose two of his spirits on the rest of the strange men.

Still kinda unnerves you how enormous she is, and how such a deity is your grandpa's acquaintance.
>>
>>5761275
Her immensity Sierra then spoke, her voice modulated perfectly even though her porcelain-like face moves not.
"And then, what occurred, Rosa?"

"Well, we managed to reach grandpa Gobson's house safely, and dropped off the stranger there." True, grandpa said not to worry. However, you remembered how the Inner Empire surveyor, Michio, was remarking something about 'a new arrival, after all these years'.

Sierra spoke again, interest squarely fixated on you and your story.
"What became of the other strangers?"

Weird how she asked you to come tell her stories as you reach The Crack's summit. Is she feeling lonely?
"Craig recalled his spirits, and my grandpa contacted the Goblin militia. They arrived just in time - all four were catatonic, apparently subjected to some kind of game show by one of the spirits. Or so said Craig, anyhow."

"Very interesting indeed, Rosa. And what happened next?"

"Situation more or less secure, we headed off to Wreck for a quick resupply, and then went here, to The Crack."

Sierra shifts her pose, and you can feel the movement of mountains and technological progress in your bones. Unnerving, but par for the course in Sierra's pocket reality - an integral part of the Reality Anchors that hold Gongalla together.
"Is that it? Surely you must have encountered something in the way. Wreck is an eventful city, even though the last time I saw it, it was a blur."

Well? Did you really have no interesting encounters on the road? Or did you decide to omit things for the sake of storytelling?

Truth is, there were some... complications. You decide not to try and trick a deity, no matter if she knows your grandpa or not.

"Actually, we did run into a couple of frankly embarrassing issues. Firstly, Nemo told us he's got no scrip left, just as we were about to try the Goblinton Express Taxi service." Apparently, helping out your aunt took a big chunk of his current budget, and the snacks in the Goblintun food street finished it off.

"...which is not that big of a setback, as he says he can withdraw some more over at our next stop, Wreck. But soon after we decide to take a walk out the town, we got to our second issue: getting ambushed by a bandit." True, it was just a single bandit that initially accosted you - but considering she's a tall, large Tmavy Les that might be affiliated with the Ravens, it adds up to an annoyance.

"Oh no! What happened next?" Sierra commented in rapt attention.

"While we were explaining to her that we were fresh out of scrip, the third issue showed up demanding our scrip. That's right, it was another bandit! The Red Scarf from earlier, even!"

"Interesting, interesting... and then?"

"Thankfully, they started thrashing each other and forgot about us, I suppose. But uh, a question?"

Sierra's focus is still on you. "Hmm? Ask away, Rosa."

"When I'm done with my story, promise me to tell a story of your own, please? You must know some good ones."

Sierra shrugs. "If you are not in hurry, why not? Do go on, let me hear your journey to Wreck."

You hope her story isn't about something trivial, but at least valuable. Right - did you encounter anything else?

"Right, you better have some juicy stories about grandpa Gobson later. Something that I haven't heard before." You just hope Sierra holds her end of the bargain.

"Sure, Rosa - I have plenty of stories about Gobson, but whether you've heard of it before or not is something we'll have to see. Now, please continue your tale - truthfully, it is quite boring in here. Imagine not being able to step outside this pocket universe, holding the rest of Gongalla together. Dreary! But I'm going off on a tangent. Do continue." Yeesh! Seems like being a deity does not mean you'll be immune to problems.

"Right, where were we? Oh right, after the encounter with the two bandits. We managed to slink away unscathed, headed to Wreck, when we heard the sound of an auto-wagon engine coming. Turns out it was a clown, riding a flatbed, and he offered us a ride to the town! Apparently he's some sort of fishmonger, going back to Wreck after selling out in New Avalon." You remember the name of the shop: Funny Fish Farm.

"So yeah, we reached Wreck ahead of schedule, despite ending up smelling a bit like leftover fish. Anyways, the Wreck Bank is on lunch break, so we hit up the local drinking hole, Samemaru - you wouldn't guess who I saw when I walked in!"

"It's Clyde, the horse dude from back at the orphanage, having a drink at the bar. He was just getting his beverage refilled by Maru, the bartender." You recall Clyde's ear swiveling towards your general direction in interest. Good thing you've paid your tab last time you were here, considering your moniless situation at the time.

"He just said 'hey', and motioned to the empty seat next to him. The rest of the gang went to an empty table, but then Craig saw Millie coming out from the back entrance. They were real cute together." Where there's Clyde, there's Millie, you guess - but you still wonder what business she had there.

"So yeah, I sat next to Clyde on the bar, and he just keeps sipping on his drink. So I thought I'd ask him if he's Millie's bodyguard. 'Kinda', he said - seems like he's a man of few words." You recall you have some questions at the time.

Ah yeah, you were about to ask the tall hunk of a horse where he's going next. "So I asked him, 'where are you going next?' and he just said, 'ask Millie'. So I turn around and lo and behold, Millie and Craig's already sprawled in an improptu tickle match, which Craig is losing hard. Damn right it was cute." Apparently Clyde thinks so too, as you remember him letting a smile and a chuckle loose.

"Indeed, the pure joy of children laughing is quite divine." Sierra elucidates.

"So anyways, to help Craig breathe a bit, I asked Millie on where they're going next. Her reply made me hold my breath for a bit - she says she's going north." Yes, that northern side of Gongalla, where cold white flakes cover the floor, the ceiling is an unbroken chain of grey, rolling clouds, and the landscape dominated by eye-bark trees, impossibly steep slopes, and the Bleeding Sun. It's also where one of the Reality Anchor's supposed to be. You've skirted the notth once - seems to have a high population of Tmavy Les in comparison to the places you've been.

So the fact that this little girl just says she's headed there nonchalantly, in the same way a child would declare she'll have a sandwich for lunch, rings alarm bells in your mind. You said something to her...

"Such naivety is most unusual." Sierra remarks, and you nod in return.

"And I think so too - she's either completely unaware of the dangers, or that somehow she has an ace up her sleeve. Some kinda hidden ability, even." True, she's very confident, even for kids her age. Either Clyde is one hell of a bodyguard, or she really have some kind of superpower.

"So, I decided to shelf the obvious question of 'who the hell are you, actually?' and instead asked if she knew a faction with a broken anvil as its logo - she said she never heard them."

You straighten out your back. "But, the conversation was interesting enough to make her take a detour to Goblinton before going north." Indeed, you told her to find Grandpa, hopefully she'll understand more about the broken anvils than you.

"After that, we split ways just outside the Samemaru, we went here, they went to Goblinton. Then we arrived on Crack. The rest, you already know."

"Fascinating. Your story has been logged, Rosa. You are quite honest for a con artist."

"Or so it seems."

"Indeed. By the way, I did owe you a story about your grandpa that you haven't heard of, right?"

"Yep." Your family's history always fascinates you.

"Browsing... have you heard of the time he explored the haunted outpost?"

"Heard it."

Sierra shifts into a more curious pose. "Then how about when he first met Nemo?"

"Heard it too."

"Hmmm. Perchance you've heard of him deceiving while being honest? The time he met his lifelong friends, James and Petunia?"

"Heard them both."

"Interesting, very interesting. Then what about the time he went to the kobolds as a diplomat? Or of the time he piloted a mech? Maybe the one where he went toe-to-toe with an assassin?"

"Wait, what? I've never heard those three before!" Maybe you've heard the kobold one mentioned in passing, but not the other two.

Despite Sierra's face being made of immutable, heavenly porcelain, you can feel a hint of a smile. "Then, you may choose one of them for me to tell."

"Tell me the one where grandpa piloted a mech." This was so outta left field that you can't help but get your interest piqued.

"Mmm, very well. This story was dated shortly after your mother was born - perhaps about a year. It started when the newly-founded Gongallan Research Institute reached out to Gobson and James in Goblinton..." ah yeah, James, Raoul's grandpa. You don't quite remember him, last time you saw Raoul's grandparents, you and Raoul were just kids.

"They wanted to explore Nowhere." Sierra pauses.
"To clarify, Nowhere is the space between universes - or so they think. They've heard of how James and Petunia entered this anchor's pocket dimension via The Crack, so they sent Dr. Miaoni and Dr. Franco to meet Gobson and James. Apparently, they tried making a suit similar to what's used by James and Petunia - but a measurement error made it too small for normal-sized person to wear." Hah, classic Gongalla blunder - you bet they mistook Imperial units and Revolutionary units again.

"Due to their budget being frozen until they get results, they are looking for volunteers from Goblinton. Your grandpa volunteered enthusiastically..."

"But, as initial testing found out, Gobson was too small for the suit! But fortunately, Ko's friends in the Goblinton Sewing Club overheard something about a suit that's too big, and rushed in to help. Once they took a good look at the 'suit', though, they realized it was made of metal, and so called on the Goblinton Smithing Guild. Before long, the Goblinton Welder Gang joined in the efforts to reshape the metal, the Goblinton Artists Collective suggested several paintjobs, the Goblinton Gear Enthusiasts and the Goblinton Magitek Society are at each others' throats over adding which parts to the mech, and somehow or another several other guilds, clubs and groups such as the Goblinton Historical Society, Goblinton Commercial Food Co-Op, and the Goblinton Thieves Guild got roped into the fray. There's even a very enthusiastic goblin with a hammer!" Amazing how Sierra never runs out of breath telling you this, but then again being a deity has its perks.

"So, when it was finally finished, Dr. Miaoni and Dr. Franco was utterly flabbergasted - for standing in front of them is..."

"The Gobmech Mk. 216. What was a mere experimental voidsuit had transformed into a combat-ready full-fledged mecha, armed with two different magitek shotguns, a shoulder-mounted missile launcher, and a circular buzzsaw (that Gobson later learned came from the pizza gob)." Heh, classic goblin shenanigans.

"Overwhelmed by the industriousness of the goblins, Dr. Franco was awestruck, while Dr. Miaoni resigned himself to fate and told the goblins to take the mech to The Crack to test it. It was where Gobson actually rode the mech and peered into the spaces between universes - although you'd have to ask Gobson himself for that." Sierra shrugs, and light aftershocks follow.

"Huh, why don't you tell the story?" Curious indeed.

"Gobson told me not to, he says it's something he's planning to pass onto." Ah, you kinda understand. The need to keep secrets of your own, to tell your family with.

"So yeah, that's the story of how Gobson became a mech pilot. You've already told me of your travels, Rosa - how goes the anchor evaluation?"

"Nemo and Valencio should be back with the report soon." Truth is, you don't know what they're doing outside - it was only you that got invited by Sierra. Hopefully Craig stayed put.

"Excellent. Do you have an idea of which anchor is the next destination?"

Uhh, you haven't discussed it with the rest of the team yet! Let's see, as far as you remember there's three other anchors left. To the East is the Ring of Fire, an archipelago of exotic locales; the frigid North is where Millie and Clyde are headed towards; and the West is currently a warzone.

You think back to Millie, and a bit of worry is starting to creep inside you. Like, you can't help but see a bit of Craig in her - despite their extraordinary talents and skills, they are still a child. And North is no place for a child to wander.
"North, I guess. Gotta see if we can help Millie in any way while we're checking the anchor."

"Oh! Have you planned a route? Then I recommend utilizing the newly laid railway. Stretches from here, to the East and West, with several stations - one of them over at Pinewatch." Ah, you've heard of it - some call Pinewatch 'the gateway to the North'. Might worth riding on, but might be heavy on Nemo's bank account.

Sierra seems to notice your hesitation. "I could also charter you an autowagon, if you want." Well, if you're not going by train then you'd have to go through The Wastes on a direct route - which could be full with bandits. Autowagon's fast though.

Or, you could just... walk. Slowest by far, but if you play your cards right, you could evade bandits better. But Craig would have to stop often, or risk exhaustion.

So, what route are you taking?

It might be a bit risky, but you're thinking about Craig. And the fact that Nemo's wallet has limits.
"I'll take that autowagon offer, then. Plan is to skirt a bit east, maybe refuel and restock at Crypt or Kyo-Edo. That being said... may I request about 10 days' worth of rations and fuel?"

Sierra nods. "Yeah sure, let me contact a driver for you as well." She makes a gesture with her right hand, and you can hear a chorus of ringing bells in the distance.

"Thank you very much, Sierra - I would like to take my leave now." You bow before turning around.

"Safe travels, Rosa Montagni. Do return here once your journey is finished, and let's tell more stories later!" Sierra waves, and a warm wind blew softly against your cheeks, in the pocket universe inside the Southern Reality Anchor.

As you exit the Crack's summit and descend, you see Nemo waiting.
"How's the scan of the Anchor?" He's supposed to have done it while you were preoccupied with Sierra.

"Stable. Very stable. There's even a sharp rise in stability when you were inside. What did you discuss inside?"

"Just swapping tales. My journey so far, for a story about grandpa Gobson."

"Hmmm. Noted, might be a way to stabilize other anchors. Anything else?"

"Ah yeah, we're heading North next. Sierra already arranged an autowagon." You look around, noticing the lack of Valencio or Craig.

"Where's Valencio and Craig?"

"Well..."

Are you really a monk if you don't enjoy some good booze?
>□ At a local grimoire shop, looking at books
Magic books.

You think you have a good grasp of their whereabouts.
"Let me guess - Valencio's off sampling booze in a local watering hole, and Craig's stuck looking at something in front of a bookstore?"

"More or less. Shall we go fetch them?"

You shrug. "Well, I'm not leaving them in Crack, of course."

Soon, you find Valencio in a liquor store, flexing his skills as a sommelier. Apparently he's kinda known in the moonshine distillery circles, by the look of the guys in the same table.

Later on, you find Craig eyeing one of three books (well, one of them is a scroll) at a local used magic bookstore. Hey look, they're on sale, even!

After you collected the team, you head down the main ladder and see an autowagon you've never seen before. More of a phaeton than a wagon, its top is stocked full with supplies, and it has a spacious room inside it that could reasonably fit four passengers easy.

"Rosa Montagni?"
The driver of the autophaeton asks as soon as you stepped down from The Crack. She smokes from a long pipe.

"Yeah. You the charter autowagon Sierra called?"

"Yep!" She looks at Craig, a smile materializing.
"Heya! Name's Ling. Ready to go? Where to?"

Having anything be a vehicle sounds interesting. Also instant walls might be useful.
Honestly it was a hard pick between this and esoteric, since esoteric magic sounds fascinating.
