You are Aknag, mighty warrior and chieftain of the Lugbod goblin tribe. The Lugbods are mountain goblins and make a living by keeping goats and hunting in the forests around their stronghold on Karlad mountain. They also mine metals from the caves within the stronghold.

Other characters:
Grinkob - The village elder and your advisor. He has great knowledge and experience of running a goblin village.
Zegbar - The general of the army and your loyal friend and right hand man. He is a strong warrior and capable commander.
Hoknar - The village shaman. He is learned in the ways of healing, herbcraft, and legend.
Bolzag - Grinkob's cleverest student, who is training to preserve Grinkob's knowledge for the tribe before he dies. He is one of the few in the tribe who can speak the human tongue.
Kebtol - Your only living full-brother and best friend since childhood.
Gedmog - Chieftain of the Bagnar hill goblins, who you have befriended. Wears a suit of human-made steel armour in battle.

THE STORY SO FAR:
After being elected as chieftain and cementing your power, you led your army to victory against the nearby Garbol tribe, defeating them for good and making their stronghold yours, which you put Kebtol in charge of. You also looted a fine steel sword of human make, which you named Shmirgle, after the troll-riding goblin warlord of legend. You learned from the Garbol prisoners that the Yardak tribe, who they had been warring with, had managed to tame a troll and use it in battle. You had metal armour forged for the Lugbod army and formed an alliance with the Bagnar tribe of hill goblins, hiring them as mercenaries. After improvising some flaming arrows, you assaulted the Yardak stronghold with your army and allies and slew the troll yourself, earning the reputation of a troll slayer. You were badly injured by the troll, and took some months to recover. After studying the destroyed Yardak shaman's workshop, your shaman Hoknar has some ideas of how the Yardaks managed to tame the troll. With the help of some coal transported from the Yardak caves, the Lugbods survived the winter, and you had a stone wall built around the Lugbod stronghold. Your scouts reported that the Hagrot hill goblins were mustering their army, and you sent 75 Lugbod warriors under Zegbar's command to the Bagnar village to help defend it, for payment of course. It is now 18 months since you became chieftain, and you await news from the battle at the Bagnar village.

Month 18, August 706

Tribe Stats:

Population:
Lugbod village: 265 men (72 on campaign), 368 women, 1046 children
Garbol outpost: 52 men, 96 women, 190 children, 71 slaves
Yardak outpost: 43 men, 85 women, 143 children
Total: 360 men, 549 women, 1379 children, 71 slaves (total 2359)

Cohesion: 93/100
Morale: 80/100
Silver: 14460 (base +100 monthly, outposts -300, mine +50, slaves in mine +355, total +205)
Food supply: 4753 (2 months)
Livestock: 520/1200
Monthly food consumption: 1670
Monthly food production: 2320 (Livestock +1040, Hunting/fishing +1280)
Net monthly food change: +650

Zegbar returns with a small party of goat riders and informs you that the Hagrot attackers were repelled. They had attacked with about 500 men, and had retreated after losing 72 in two unsuccessful assaults. 45 of the defenders were killed, including 3 Lugbod warriors. The Bagnars are now bloodthirsty and seek revenge against the Hagrots. Gedmog, the Bagnar chieftain, wants to lead an attack on the Hagrot village, if you will agree to support him. He offers 12000 silver for the support of 150 of your men. Zegbar says some Lugbods will be on the way home carrying Gedmog's payment of 5000 silver and the rest he ordered to stay in the Bagnar village until further instruction. Gedmog awaits your reply soon. What will you do?
>I will lend the Bagnars the support of 150 men under Zegbar's command. (+12000 silver, half of the loot)
>I will lend the Bagnars the support of 150 men and lead them myself while Zegbar defends the village. (+12000 silver, +5 morale, half of the loot)
>I will order all my men to return home, the Hagrots are too numerous. It is wiser to bide our time.
>Something else (write-in)

As the leader of the attack, Gedmog would be able to claim the Hagrot village for the Bagnars if the Hagrots are conquered, and you could not use it as an outpost. It is estimated that the Hagrots have about 500 fighting men to defend their village and the Bagnars have 270 men available to attack. While you would be outnumbered, your soldiers' metal armour would give them a significant advantage over the hill goblins. The Hagrots, like most hill goblins, also do not have a very high wall around their village.

Notes on village stats:

Population lists how many goblins live in the village. Every month, goblins will be born, die, and grow up. Goblin women have on average 1 offspring every four months, and goblin children take 6 years to mature into adults, though the child mortality rate is high. Slaves are captured goblin men from tribal wars (the captured women are taken as wives instead). Slaves have a lower life expectancy than tribe members due to more dangerous work and poor conditions.
Cohesion describes the social unity within the tribe. Low cohesion means the tribe is divided along political lines or otherwise and indicates risk of civil war. Low cohesion also affects morale negatively.
Morale describes how content the goblins are with the current circumstances. Prosperity and good conditions increase morale, while war casualties, resource shortages, and other things that you would expect lower morale.
Silver represents how many silver pieces you have in your coffers. Silver is used by the goblins as currency, and is paid to you in tribute.
Food supply indicates how much food is preserved in the village stores. 1 unit of food represents how much a goblin will eat in 1 month under normal conditions. As a new rule since the last thread, children will eat half as much as adults. Rationing may be imposed up to 50% to stretch food supplies at the cost of morale. Monthly food production is dependent on the season and the work the goblins are doing. Since food production drops during Winter, food must be saved up before to avoid starvation.
Livestock is the number of goats kept in the village. Livestock provide +2 food each every month as milk. Livestock can be slaughtered for immediate food, but at the cost of future milk.

You decide to help the Bagnars. There is still some of the fire mixture left over from the attack on the Yardaks and you order some more to be made (-500 silver). You send a messenger to the Bagnar village with your reply, instructing him to tell Gedmog to prepare the Bagnars for using the fire arrows again. Zegbar tells you that the Bagnars are making many wooden shields for the attack, which they will share with your men. Your men arrive bearing the 5000 silver from Gedmog, and shortly after a Bagnar rider arrives and tells you that the army is now on the march. Those of your men who stayed in the Bagnar village are marching with the Bagnars, and you are to bring the rest of your attack force to meet them at the fork in the river before marching on the Hagrots.
>>
By the time you arrive, the Bagnars have finished fording the river and you join forces for the rest of the march. The Bagnars seem to be mostly wielding metal weapons which they looted from the Yardak stronghold. You think this will give them an edge over the Hagrots, as metal is scarcer among the hill goblins. Hagrot scouts are spotted occasionally, and when you arrive at their village the defenders are well prepared. A spiked moat has been dug around their outer wall, which is made of logs lashed together vertically and only stands the height of two goblins, although it is built upon a mound of earth. Gedmog orders a siege camp and defensive line be set up at a distance from the village. While the men are at work, he calls a war council with you and some of his officers. Several attack plans are discussed, and Gedmog seems undecided. You think he might be swayed by your advice. What plan do you support?
>Construct ladders and attack during the day, when our bowmen will have the best visibility. Send the troops forward using shields as cover, and the Bagnar archers will shoot at the defenders on the walls while the Lugbod and Bagnar infantry will cross the moat and scale the wall. (Success chance: 80%, Lugbod casualties: 0.6*1d100)
>Attack at night, when our men will be safest from arrows. They will carry firewood and kindling soaked in the fire mixture and place it around the base of the wall. Once at a safe distance, the archers will shoot fire arrows to light the fuel, burning down a section of the wall and driving the defenders back, giving the attackers an opportunity to break through. (Success chance: 55%, Lugbod casualties: 0.25*1d100)
>Surround the village to cut off their outside food supply and wait them out while hunting the forests for our food. When they attack, fight them on even ground. (Sortie chance: 35%, Lugbod casualties (only if Hagrots sortie): 0.6*1d100, +300 monthly food production, 1 month passes if no sortie)
If the attack fails, another assault can be attempted.
QM will roll the 1d100. For the sortie option, the reason the casualties are 0.6*1d100 is because it will only happen if the 1d100<36.

Gedmog agrees with your advice and the preparations are made. After night falls, your forces advance towards the western wall, upwind of the village. The wall is lined with Hagrot archers, who loose arrows at the attackers. The Bagnar archers return volleys from behind their shields. In the darkness not many arrows hit, but it keeps their heads down. Your men advance carrying fuel, protecting themselves from the arrows with shields. They pile the firewood and kindling against the wall before retreating back. The archers begin shooting fire arrows, and the fuel lights up quickly. The Hagrots flee from the growing fire as it engulfs the wooden wall. Your men stand back waiting for the flames to die out. Only six Lugbods were killed by the arrows.
The flames subside and you and Gedmog lead your men through the gap in the wall. A few Hagrots scatter before you and retreat. The remains of many burned down huts lie before you, and the Hagrots have formed a defensive line ahead, in the middle of the village. You reckon there are about 500 of them against your 400. They begin loosing arrows. Gedmog gives the order to attack. What will you do?
>Lead the Lugbods and Bagnars in a swift charge towards the enemy. (80% chance of routing Hagrots, 0.8*1d100 Lugbod casualties, 1.2*1d100 Bagnar casualties, 175 Hagrot casualties)

The Hagrots shoot arrows at the charging attackers, but inflict few casualties before you are upon them. Their line breaks quickly before your fierce charge, and almost 200 of them are slain as the rest flee between the buildings on the other side of the village. Only 12 Lugbods and 18 Bagnars were killed in the charge. Some of the fleeing enemies are heading in the direction of the main gate, apparently intending to abandon the village and keep their lives. Most of the rest are fleeing to the largest building in the village, the chieftain's keep. The keep is defensible enough that it shouldn't be assaulted without a plan. What will you do?
>Do not let them escape, chase the fleeing enemies. If they will not surrender, they must die.
>Leave them. We must not get distracted from our objective. Surround the keep while clearing out the rest of the village.

>>
You send some of your men to surround the keep and the rest comb through the village looking for survivors in hiding. They take 10 Hagrot men prisoner, and kill those who wouldn't surrender. Gedmog calls a war council to assess the situation. The officers estimate that about 150 to 200 Hagrot men made it into the keep, with 217 counted dead and the rest fled. There were no women or children found in the village, presumably they were moved into the keep before the battle started. As the siege camp was left undefended, the fleeing Hagrots were able to loot some food and other supplies from your stores before escaping into the forest (-60 food, -100 silver). There are 120 Lugbods and 200 Bagnars still fit to fight.
The keep is made of wood and stands higher than the outer wall. A direct assault would be costly. There is the option of burning it like the wall, but that would kill potential slaves and destroy a lot of loot. Gedmog considers the idea of challenging the Hagrot chieftain to single combat. If their chieftain is killed, the remaining Hagrots will likely be demoralised and surrender. You could also try to starve them out. What course of action will you suggest to him?
>Wait until nightfall and burn the keep with the remaining fire mixture. At least the metals can be recovered. (65% success chance, 0.3*1d100 Lugbod casualties, 0.4*1d100 Bagnar casualties, -80% women and children captured, less loot, no food looted)

>Let Gedmog challenge the chieftain. (75% success chance, 25% injury chance, Bagnars lose cohesion and morale if Gedmog defeated)
>Insist you fight the chieftain yourself. (85% success chance, 30% injury chance, -10 morale on defeat, -15 cohesion on defeat, +5 morale on victory, +5 cohesion on victory)
>Starve them out. (20% chance of sortie, 0.3*1d100 Lugbod casualties and 0.4*1d100 Bagnar casualties on fight, 1 month passes if no sortie, +150 monthly food production from hunting)

You encourage Gedmog to challenge the Hagrot chieftain, Kanbok. He walks to the gate of the keep and calls out his challenge. After a short while, a hulking goblin clad in thick iron armour strides out to meet him, ahead of the cheers of the defenders of the walls. He is wielding a heavy iron mace and a wooden shield. Gedmog readies his spear and shield and the combat begins in the gateway. Gedmog taunts Kanbok, who charges at him and deflects Gedmog's spear with his shield. Gedmog ducks underneath Kanbok's swing and springs back, pointing his spear at him. Kanbok takes a defensive stance and raises his shield. Gedmog thrusts his spear towards Kanbok's neck, and Kanbok makes to block with his shield. But Gedmog feints, taking advantage of the shield blocking Kanbok's vision, and thrusts at his foot, through a gap in his armour. Kanbok staggers back, bleeding but still able to stand. Gedmog stabs at Kanbok's shield, knocking him over. Gedmog makes another thrust towards his downed opponent, but he rolls aside and gets back up. Kanbok closes in on Gedmog and swings his mace. Gedmog uses his shield to deflect the blow. His shield shatters, but he is close enough to grapple his enemy and throw him to the ground. He wastes no time and puts his spear through the back of Kanbok's exposed neck. The Bagnars and Lugbods erupt in cheering.
Some Hagrots try to close the gate, but Gedmog drives them back with his spear. Your men march swiftly through the gate and the Hagrots scatter, begging for mercy. When the Hagrots are all rounded up, you and Gedmog have the prisoners counted. There are 186 men, 612 women, and 970 children, plus the 10 men you took prisoner earlier. The prisoners are divided equally between you and the Bagnars, giving you 98 men, 306 women, and 485 children. The soldiers take their share of the loot from the keep and there is 6800 silver for you after dividing it with Gedmog. You also gain 4000 food from their food stores. Gedmog also gives you your 12000 silver now (+18800 silver). This victory gives your men +10 morale.

What will you do with the men you've taken prisoner?
>Enslave them (+98 slaves)
>Feed them to the men (+98 food, +3 morale)
>Something else (write-in)

147 of the women are given to your soldiers and captains as wives, as is customary. What should be done with the other 159?
>I will keep them for myself. (+306 women)
>I will sell them to any Lugbod who will buy them (+306 women, +8000 silver)
>I will sell them to the Bagnars (+147 women, +10000 silver)

You offer the Hagrot men the opportunity to join the Lugbod tribe. They will be second class citizens, but above slaves. They will be able to fight as soldiers and take war brides, but they will be distributed among native Lugbod units to keep them from rebelling and they will never be officers. Those who take up civilian roles will free up more Lugbods to join the army. All of the Hagrot men accept your offer, as it is much better than slavery. However this is not a popular decision. The Lugbods will hate living with and fighting alongside outsiders, especially enemies. Captured children who will grow up among the Lugbods are one thing, former enemy soldiers are another thing entirely (+98 men, -25 morale, -30 cohesion).
Once the baggage train is organised, it sets off with the prisoners and loot, escorted by most of the soldiers. The children will be sent to the mines as slaves (+485 child slaves). Child slaves will eat half as much and mine half as much silver. You ride ahead with a small party and fill in Zegbar on the battle when you arrive. The baggage train and prisoners eventually arrive, and you have the excess women sold at auction. Some of the Hagrot men are able to borrow enough silver to buy their wives back (+8000 silver). Grinkob tells you he has reorganised the tribute laws while you were away, and you give him your permission to put them in place. Base net monthly silver will now be +1 per man to account for population growth instead of a flat +100.
>>
Grinkob tells you that with the new influx of mouths to feed, the tribe is now eating more food than it is producing. He suggests buying some goats from the Bagnars in the short term, and in the long term building hunting outposts in the forests so the hunters can hunt over a wider area. Hunting outposts are not strongly defensible, so they should only built in areas surrounded by allies. The Hagrots who fled from the battle are still somewhere in the forest east of the river, so an outpost built there would be in danger.
Winter is also approaching and will begin at the start of December. During winter, the food production from livestock will stay the same but food production from hunting will decrease to a quarter. Morale will also decrease by 5 points per winter month, the birth rate will be very low, and the death rate will increase. Grinkob suggests light rationing of food to help build up stores in preparation for winter. You can ration up to 50% without causing outright starvation, but the more you ration, the lower morale will drop. Extreme rationing should be reserved for dire circumstances.

How many goats will you buy?
>100 (+100 livestock, -5000 silver)
>200 (+200 livestock, -10000 silver)
>300 (+300 livestock, -15000 silver)
>None

How many outposts will you build?
>Build one outpost in the western forest between Karlad mountain and Boglad mountain. (2 months to finish, -5000 silver build cost, +400 monthly food production, -80 silver monthly expenses, can be later upgraded into a fortification)
>Build one outpost in the western forest and one outpost east of the river. (4 months to finish, -10000 silver build cost, +800 monthly food production, -160 silver monthly expenses, can be later upgraded into fortifications)
>Do not build any for now.

The one in the western forest will be built first and completed at the start of winter, the second will be built after winter ends. Winter will begin next month. Grinkob tells you that morale in the village is getting low, and the rationing and coming winter might make things dangerous. He suggests giving the goblins some coal from the stores to help keep them warm and lifting rationing at the start of winter.
Will you give the goblins coal?
>Yes, give them enough to warm their caves when winter starts. (+5 cohesion, -350 silver monthly, +5 morale monthly, lower death rate during winter)
>If they want coal, they will have to pay for it. (No effect)

The snow falls and the stream begins to freeze as winter begins. The hunting outpost in the western forest is complete, but construction on the eastern one cannot begin until winter ends. You had some goblins moved to the outposts on Boglad mountain over the past month since the village was getting a little crowded. You start to distribute the coal to the tribe, which proves popular.
Zegbar brings to your attention that the soldiers' armour is in a state of disrepair. The iron is rusting, the padding and straps are fraying and torn, and the breastplates and helmets are dented. There is also only enough metal armour left for 150 or so men, leaving many of your soldiers poorly protected. He says the armour could be repaired and replaced over the winter, and monthly maintenance could be conducted from now on to keep the armour in good condition.

What will you do?
>Fully repair the armour and forge more to outfit 200 men in total. (-10000 silver, 3 months to complete, -500 silver monthly afterwards for maintenance)
>Fully repair the armour and forge more to outfit 400 men in total. (-30000 silver, 8 months to complete, -1000 silver monthly afterwards for maintenance)

The work in the forges continues over January. Grinkob falls ill in the cold and is bedbound. Hoknar provides the best care he can, but given Grinkob's age he thinks he will likely not survive long. While Grinkob is sick someone else will need to take his place as your advisor. Who will you choose?

You make Bognod your advisor in Grinkob's place. Bognod is missing an arm, an injury from ancient battle that turned him towards a career in administration. Grinkob is still alive, but becoming less coherent. The winter ends and Bognod brings his financial concerns to you. He says that recent spending on the hunting outposts and armour has left little silver in your coffers. Bognod questions the need for 400 suits of armour over 200, saying that the 200 made so far should be enough for the forseeable future, the maintenance cost for 400 would be too expensive to maintain, and the 20000 silver put aside for making the next 200 could be kept instead. Zegbar on the other hand seems to be almost salivating thinking about having 400 suits of metal armour.
>He speaks wisdom, cancel the rest of the armour. We don't need more than 200 for now. (+20000 silver, maintenance cost stays at -500 monthly)
>We could do with some austerity, but we need the armour. Cancel the plans to build the hunting outpost in the eastern forest. (+5000 silver)

This should be tempting to the Bagnars, they don't have access to armor nor the ability to maintain them if they buy it, so we can charge them monthly for maintenance

Grinkob finally succumbs to his illness and dies in his sleep. Old age is a rare cause of death for goblins. You declare a day of mourning.
You decide to keep forging the armour and building the outpost, but the construction will have to wait until the men finish their work on the armour. You send a messenger to Gedmog offering to sell 100 suits of metal armour to the Bagnars for 20000 silver. Gedmog replies that he could pay 7500 silver and the soldiers who would wear the armour would be willing to come up with 75 silver each, for a total of 15000 silver. They could also pay 400 silver monthly to maintain the armour, which would leave a profit of 150 silver monthly for you.

You accept Gedmog's offer. The armourers begin making new suits of armour in larger sizes for the Bagnars. You take a party of scouts and ride to the Tablon village. The Tablon chieftain, Foglar, knows your reputation and clearly fears you. He orders his guards to stand down and allows you an audience. You ask if he would consider fighting alongside the Lugbods. He tells you plainly that he would want you as an ally, but the Tablons would never join with the Bagnars. The Tablons used to raid human caravans passing the road to the south of the forest, until the leader of the humans hired the Bagnars to hunt down the Tablon raiding parties. The Tablons stopped the raids, losing their largest source of income. Since then the Tablons have hated the Bagnars, even though they haven't fought each other recently. Foglar says he could forge an alliance with you, but only if you turn against the Bagnars. You tell him you will think about it, and return home.
>Of course that was a lie. I wouldn't really consider betraying the Bagnars for the Tablons, I just said that to leave with my head on my shoulders.
>Perhaps it would be a wise move. I haven't given them any armour yet, and if I conquer them I could gain both the Hagrot and Bagnar villages, extending my territory south. If I will ever do it, I should do it now while I can still decisively defeat them.

You order the hunting outpost in the eastern forest to be built and 100 men to be stationed there. Scouts find no sign of the Hagrot deserters in the surrounding area, they must be further to the south closer to their old village. A messenger from Gedmog tells you that the humans have placed a bounty of 30000 silver on the Tablons, as they have started attacking travellers on the road again. This time they want the entire tribe destroyed, and the chieftain's head delivered to them. Gedmog offers to split the bounty evenly with you if you join him in attacking the Tablons, after the Hagrot deserters are dealt with. He also offers to let you take control of the Tablon village once they are defeated.

Construction on the hunting outpost in the eastern forest is finished. Nine of the Hagrot men stationed at the outpost deserted during the night, taking three sets of armour with them. It's unclear whether they went to join their brethren, or if they set off on their own. With the removal of some of its most disloyal members, the tribe gains some cohesion but morale drops (-9 men, -3 armour, +3 cohesion, -1 morale). The maintenance cost will cover replacing 5 lost suits of armour per month.
Bagnar scouts have found the area where the Hagrots have been camping. They have been living as nomads and moving around in small groups, so it won't be easy to force them to face you in a straight battle. The Bagnars plan to send armoured warriors riding with the scouts to hunt down the small groups one by one.

You split the riders into four groups to hunt down the bands of Hagrots. By the time the last of them are killed, 18 of your men and 23 goats were lost (-18 men, -23 livestock). With the forest secure, you assemble 250 men and lead them to the Tablon village (+5 morale), meeting the Bagnars along the way who have brought 300 men. You brought the last of the fire mixture with you. There is enough to burn a gap into a wall or to arm the Bagnars with flaming arrows, but not both. You arrive at the Tablon village and they seem to be prepared for your arrival. The defences are similar to those of the Hagrot village, but from your previous visit you know that the chieftain's keep is smaller with lower walls. With the approaching winter, starving them out is not an option. What approach will you take against the outer wall?

The Tablons seem more prepared for the fire than the Hagrots were, as they are emptying buckets of water over the side of the wall. But their attempts to stop the blaze are futile and they are forced back as it consumes the wall and the surrounding buildings. Six of your men and five of the Bagnars were killed by the enemy archers. (-6 men, +4 morale)
When the fire subsides, you see that the Tablons have quickly dug a moat and built an earthen mound as a second line of defence behind the breach. What will you do?

You draw Shmirgle and let out a war cry as you charge through the gap in the wall, leaping over the smouldering debris with Zegbar and Gedmog beside you. Your men and the Bagnars follow close behind, joining your cry. You leap the moat and plunge your sword through a Tablon's chest, knocking his spear aside with the shield in your other hand. Your men beside you push forward, cutting down the enemies before them. The Tablons hold strong for a time, but the armoured warriors are too much for them and they retreat when the bodies of their comrades are piling around them. The Tablons have reserve troops holding ground further back as the others retreat towards the keep.
11 of your men and 8 Bagnars were killed in the attack, and the bodies of 55 Tablons lie before you (-11 men, +3 morale). You estimate they must have about 400 men left. The reserve troops covering the retreat ahead of you number about 100. You have 90 men on this side of the wall ready to attack. What will you do?
>Charge them now before they can retreat to the keep. (7% injury chance, 0.4*1d100 Lugbod casualties, 0.2*1d100 Bagnar casualties, 0.5*(100-1d100) Tablon casualties)

You order the men to keep pushing forward. You use your shield to block the arrows as you run towards the line of enemies, your men beside you. After you cut a couple of them down, their line folds under the assault and they retreat back into the middle of the village with the rest of the Tablons. 12 Lugbods, 6 Bagnars, and 36 Tablons were killed (-12 men). The rest of your forces are making their way through the breach far behind. You have about 65 uninjured men with you and could still attack the retreating Tablons one last time before they escape into the keep, if you are quick.
>We are relentless. Keep attacking. (20% injury chance, 0.4*1d100 Lugbod casualties, 0.2*1d100 Bagnar casualties, 0.3*(100-1d100) Tablon casualties)

The rest of your men eventually arrive to reinforce you, and you have them surround the keep. The village is searched and nothing of value is found, everything must have been moved to the keep. The walls of the keep are wooden and stand the height of three goblins. Your men have to keep their distance and stay in cover because of the archers atop the wall. Zegbar comes up with a plan of attack where the troops scale the walls at several points at once using ladders while another group uses a battering ram to attack the gate. Gedmog suggests piling firewood from the village against the walls and burning it down, however it is less likely to work since you have none of the fire mixture left and even if it does work, it would destroy most loot and any prisoners inside. It is also possible that the fire would destroy the chieftain's body and his head could not be taken for the bounty. There are 200 Lugbods and 250 Bagnars fit to fight, and you estimate there are about 300 Tablon men left.
>Go with Zegbar's plan. (Success chance 70%, 1.2*1d100 Lugbod casualties, 1.35*1d100 Bagnar casualties, +5 morale if successful, -10 morale if unsuccessful, full loot if successful)
>Go with Zegbar's plan, but I will lead a squad of our best troops in climbing the wall over the gate to cover the men with the battering ram. (Success chance 80%, 25% injury chance, 1.2*1d100 Lugbod casualties, 1.35*1d100 Bagnar casualties, +5 morale if successful, -10 morale if unsuccessful, full loot if successful)
>Go with Gedmog's plan. (Success chance 25%, chance chieftain's head recoverable 70%, 0.4*1d100 Lugbod casualties, 0.5*1d100 Bagnar casualties, +5 morale if successful, only some silver recovered and no prisoners if successful)
>Challenge Foglar to single combat. The Tablons are in a good position and you think they would still not surrender if you won. But you could take his head and destroy the village outside the keep in the hope that the winter will weaken them, or burn the keep. You decide to follow Zegbar's plan, with you leading the best fighters (including Gedmog) to scale the walls above the gate. Once the ladders are built, the men advance on the keep under Zegbar's orders, using their shields as protection from the arrows. You lead your squad alongside the sharpened tree trunk that serves as a battering ram and put the ladder up against the wall next to the gate. A Tablon on the wall starts to push the top of the ladder away to tip it over, until a Bagnar arrow pierces his eye and he tumbles off the wall, landing at your feet. You begin to climb the ladder and Gedmog follows you. A couple of the Tablons on the wall above try to drop stones on you as you climb, but the archers take care of them quickly. Luckily you chose the best archers to cover your squad. You draw Shmirgle when you reach the top of the ladder and swing at the defenders above you, driving them back. You leap up onto the wall between several Tablons. You quickly swing your sword at the one to your right and he blocks the blow, but the force pushes him backward off the wall. You move to the right away from the others and quickly take your shield off your back while you can.
More Tablons are approaching along the wall from both sides. You charge the ones to the left, pushing them back as their weapons are deflected by your shield and armour. One finds your sword through his neck. With the Tablons pushed back from the ladder, Gedmog climbs onto the wall and stands behind you, facing towards the Tablons on the right. He has eschewed his usual spear for a curved shortsword. The two of you hold back the enemies on either side, giving the rest of the squad time to climb up and join you. The Bagnars in the squad back up Gedmog as he pushes to the right and the Lugbods follow your lead to the left. The Tablons are gradually cut down or pushed off the wall and the gate gives way to the battering ram.
Led by Zegbar, more than a hundred infantry who were waiting outside the gate charge through. The Tablons within the walls hurry to form a line to hold them off, and your men begin throwing stones at them that the Tablons left atop the wall. The charging infantry drive the panicked enemies before them, and soon all the Tablons are fleeing or begging for mercy. Except one. The chieftain Foglar is cornered, holding off several Lugbods and Bagnars at once. Zegbar approaches wielding an iron club and has the men stand aside. Foglar charges at Zegbar and they fight. Foglar swings his sword under Zegbar's guard, hitting him in the leg. At the same time, Zegbar swings his club at Foglar's legs, sending him tumbling over. Zegbar stands, putting his weight on his good leg, and brings his club down onto Foglar's chest with a crunch.

When the chaos is over and the dead are counted, only 12 Lugbods and 14 Bagnars were killed in the assault, though a fair few more were wounded. The prisoners are rounded up and 121 Tablon men, 597 women, and 812 children are counted. In addition to the Tablons some of their slaves are recovered alive. Among the slaves are 23 Bagnars who gladly reunite with their tribe, 13 Yardaks, and most interestingly, four humans. You've never seen a human before, and they surprise you with how large they are and how strange they look. The smallest of them, which you think is a child, stands about as high as you. The largest one, which seems to be a man, speaks to you. You have no idea what he is saying, but Gedmog has had dealings with the humans before and brings one of his translators. The man is saying that he is grateful that you rescued them. You find this a strange reaction, because normally goblins take captured slaves as their own. Only slaves of one's own tribe are released. The man tells you that they are from the human town to the south, which is called Northwalden, and if you take them there you will be rewarded. Normally you would punish the insolence of a prisoner who spoke to you unprompted, but you are so curious about these strange creatures that you let it slide. Other than prisoners, there is the loot remaining for you after the soldiers take their share and you split the rest evenly with Gedmog (+8300 silver, +123 livestock, +7250 food, -12 men, +5 morale). Half of the Tablon prisoners are also yours. Gedmog suggests you come with him to the human town to deliver Foglar's head and collect the bounty.
>I will ride with Gedmog to the human town. I brought Bolzag with us in preparation for this so he can translate for me.
>I trust Gedmog to bring my share of the silver to me. I will ride home to the village.

Votes are to travel to the human town, enslave the Tablon men, auction off the women, enslave the children, take the humans to the town, and turn the village into an outpost. Tie between enslaving and freeing the Yardaks. Rolling for tiebreaker. 1=enslave, 2=free.
>>
You decide you will go with Gedmog to the human town and take the humans with you. But first, you have other matters to deal with. You question the Yardaks about the troll independently, promising them that they will be freed once the information they give you is verified. Apparently they were part of a raiding party that was captured by the Tablons when they were fighting the Yardaks, before they captured the troll. So they've never seen the troll, but they know that when they left the Yardak stronghold scouts had found a troll in the caves in the mountain to the north west, and the chieftain had plans to tame it. You have them sent back to the village to see if Hoknar can find out anything else useful from them.
You tell Zegbar to oversee the transport of loot and prisoners back to the village while you are gone. With his injured leg he will not be able to ride with you anyway. You order that the Tablon men be taken as slaves and the women be auctioned to the tribe. You decide to enslave the children, but keep them out of the mine until they are at least 4 so they don't die too quickly. The Tablon village will also be made into an outpost. (+298 women, +196 slaves, +271 child slaves, +3450 silver, +400 food monthly, -100 silver monthly, +500 livestock space)
Child slaves will no longer provide 2.5 silver per month but will have a lower death rate.

With your orders in place, you take a small party of scouts and set off with Gedmog and the humans. You bring some extra goats for the humans, but only two of them are light enough for them to carry. The others will have to walk.
