Previously on Nationquest: War of Storms...

The Great Fleet launched from their home Island to the “Anyaten Empire,” a lawless land ruled by wealthy Guilds.
Makana, the youngest daughter of The Island’s former leading political family, convinced Fleet Captain Nizax to take a small crew to the Plains of the Empire.
This crew included 6 Knife, warriors of the Anyaten death cult.
While pitching it as a way to gain intelligence, her true plan is to claim power of her own in this foreign land.
Returning from her journey, she tells her Captain what transpired...

Nizax: Makana, you’ve been gone almost a month. What happened?

“We got held up by pirates on the way down, but we gave them some Dreamdoor to fuck off.”
Nizax: You gave away drugs to pirates?
“Not done yet. We got to a shithole of a farm and planted some grass, then the Garden Guild came asking for taxes but we gave them some Dreamdoor to fuck off.”
Nizax: You SOLD drugs to a foreign power without us knowing?
“It’s cool, I told the farmers I was a holy Child of the Loa come to save them.”
Nizax:...
“And then the MUCH richer Fountain Guild dicks showed up, but don’t worry, I didn’t give them any Dreamdoor.”
Nizax: Small victory.
“I told them to fuck off with nothing and that if they tried anything, The Fleet would invade.”
Nizax: Oh! Lait malolo liklik...

The Captain starts pacing circles in the sand. While they mutter to themselves, Lani, Head Ambassador to the Anyaten ( and certified religious freak) rushes to your face.

Lani: Is this true? You spread the Holy word of the Loa?
“Yeah, and it seems you’ve been doing some spreading yourself. Ever hear of a small buggah named Ōra?
Lani: One of the most promising sharks I’ve managed to herd.
“I told them to talk story. Soon the whole Plains will know The Children of the Loa are looking out for them.”
Lani: And why this sudden change of heart? I haven’t known you to care about anything you couldn't drink, eat, or fornicate with.

> I am a faithful servant of the Loa. (Large Lie. High Die roll required for it to be believed.)
> “I told them that to help The Fleet (Mild Lie. Medium Die roll required for it to be believed.)
>"I’m trying to build power here. (The Truth)

Lani: Hmmph. Even bat dung grows flowers.
“Lani. I just spent a month listening to junk religious riddles. So please drop the woo woo act for a scosh and tell me if I’m getting arrested or not.
Lani: There is wisdom in uniting the followers in this land behind us. Even if it is by a lech like you. I will speak with the captain and plan for out next moment.
Nizax: No need for privacy. You can explain now why Makana hasn’t doomed us.
Lani: This land is divided, the Guilds are at eachother’s throats and the people are depserate for a savior. Now they know WE are that savior. If we were to strike, it would be with their blessing.
Nizax: No. This is a mission of peace and trade, not an invading army.
“Take it from me, invading armies make for great trade deals. I just got the richest Guild to back off for free just by threatening one.

Nizax takes a long sigh and sldies thier hand over thier face.

Nizax: I’ll have to go to Yi Hyataannaannan and see exactly how the Guilds are taking this.
“Wait, you speak... whatever it is they speak here?”
Lani: Some of us have been spending our time on more than drink and vanity.
“Don’t forget not being a total-”
Nizax:Lani has been teaching the crew some of the local language. Our skills are raw, but enough to get by.
“Lucky me. I have more options for my next field mission.”
Nizax: Next? You just came back from almost starting a war.
Lani: Yet the Fleet stands stronger than ever. Let this brute be the Loas’ blunt instrument while we serve as their enlightened voice.
“I really wish you weren’t on my side right now so I could knock you out.”
Nizax: No one's knocking anyone out. Where exactly are you trying to go?
“That creepy rock in the ocean. If they’re building their ripoff Great Fleet, we should know about it.”

Nizax’s face grows pale.

Nizax:Yi Hyaaonte is not a good place. It is a land of death and suffering.

And the argument for bringing Nyzax is pure. None of the others were on that island, and the knowledge of sea-faring boats would be important to be able to judge the guild's shipyards ability to build their fleet.
If they become able to sail to the island, then it's possible the guilds would put aside their infighting to loot the new place. Like some sort of mirror of what the fleet affected our home.

As >>5705964 pointed out, only the Captain was ever there, and only the Captain would know for sure if this fake Great Fleet is ready. However, I'm personally going to vote for:

>The Activist
This is for three reasons. One, if Nizax's trauma overrides everything else, that's going to be massive trouble. Two, I'm willing to risk that Wildcard trait over everyone's negatives except 6 Knife's. Three, Six might need some time to rest after the mess we just pulled in that village.

“Send Gamboa with me.”
Nizax: Gamboa? Their views aren’t exactly... similar to yours.
“Lani’s so far up her ass she can eat her lunch twice, you clearly want nothing to do with the Island, 6 Knife’s earned a rest after that shit in the plains, and the less said about Chief Racist-Dick the better.”
Nizax: Vulgar, but understandable. Wait, who’s 6 Knife?

You gesture at the master warrior, sharpening their blades on a rock.

“Now that you’ve practiced the language, maybe try talking things out. Could you do you some good. Gamboa! Let’s go.
____
The journey to The Binding was quick, if boring as shit. All Gamboa did was row and look at you with that creepy fucking grin of theirs.
It made the fog bank you sailed into almost a relief.

“Hold the rowing, the water’s getting rocky!”
Gamboa: These aren’t rocks...

You look in the shallow water and see not stone, but wood.
The wrecks of countless makeshift wa’a are piled so thick they rise from the ocean floor. With a gust of wind, the mist cleared revealing a grim mountain rising from the waves.
Boats clog the shore, some familiar looking, others so bizarre you question if a human mind dreamt them.
Towers with many floors jutted from the rocks, people spilling from them like a swarm of bees.
As you get closer, you see most of them are underfed and straining from the weight of the logs they carry.
They haul the logs from the same kind of low-quality boats you saw the Garden Guild use and drag them onto the beach.
There, under the watchful eye of overseers, they hack away at the logs in a surreal reflection of a process you’ve seen done since you were a girl.

“What the fuck.”
Gamboa: Why so surprised? Your family’s been doing the same back home for years.
“You know, it’s not too late for me to turn back and trade you for Lani.
Gamboa: Yes, I’m sure Queen Holyfarts would approve of whatever naughtiness you’re planning here.
“Point taken. Just stay low and translate when I need it.”

The makeshift coral reef of rotten wood keeps you from being seen by the workers, though it’s not like they’re paying much attention.

Gamboa: It might be a good idea to have a spy who can speak the language of the people they're spying on.
“No shit, Chief Lip-flapper. You and...Kaia, come with me. The rest of you stay by the wa’a in case we need to head Makai.”
Gamboa: They’re working these people so hard they can barely lift their heads. It shouldn’t be hard to sneak past and find the pakshet behind all this.

Gamboa was annoying but right. The workers were focused on their wood and the overseers were focused on the workers.
You slipped right past them into the tallest building.
It's like the entire Island was warped around making these hammajang wa’a to the point nothing else existed.
As you walk up the stairs, the wood below creaks with every step. One strong breeze and the entire thing would fall over.

Gamboa: I hear something.

You follow your translator up another staircase and look down.
A massive ring of strange writing, carving in the wood, and endless pictures of bizarre wa’a surround the landscape.
Jars of what smells like piss stand in the corners and at the center of it all, a pale bald figure in a black robe, having what seems to be a very tense conversation with a similarly dressed brown-robed person across the room.

Gamboa: They’re Seeker guild.
Brown Seeker:..janāpie jamēþi ē anhōhi ē reli...
Pale Seeker:Jahōheran. Jānnāneran. Jāxteran. Selesse jatūrelili ka! Sele jantēlen janānexa ka!
Brown Seeker: Saña jatēpa ŋō.

“Gamby. Ya gonna keep staring at them, or are you gonna tell me what they're saying?!”

The usually playful face of Gamboa is rigid, every syllable they speak fighting to stay a whisper.

Gamboa: The Pale Seeker is in trouble with their guild. The food and water for these people is too “expensive.” Too much “product” bought from other guilds. They call these workers things! Their lives are just numbers to them!
“Hey, let’s keep it cool here.”

You step over to comfort your crewmate whose clearly struggling to keep it together but your foot breaks through the sloppily built floorboards.
The rotten wood crashes below and both Seekers look up.

You quickly squish into the shadows.
Years of sneaking booze, drugs, and sexual conquests into your parent's house have made you quite adept at stealth.

Brown Seeker: La þō jakōnōr jakāpa.

>Alt-Text: A pale bald person in a black cloak kneels on a wooden floor in a wooden room.
>Content Warning: Mentions of sui.

You stand in silence as the Brown Seeker leaves the tower. Once alone, the Pale Seeker circles the room in a rage, their voice breaking with emotion.

Pale Seeker: Sele jantēlen janānexa ka! Sele jantēlen janānexa KA!

They drop to their knees and begin scribbling jagged lines into the wood.

“If this is what they do every time they get pissed, no wonder the place is falling apart.”
Gamboa: No. Look closer.

As the Seeker moves you see the jagged carvings aren't a tantrum, but a sketch. A picture of a wa’a forms in the waterlogged floorboards.
The bits and pieces are the wrong size, but the basic idea exists.
You barely paid attention when Papa Kāne was teaching you “heritage” but you know enough to see whatever they’re scribbling could probably cross the ocean.
It’s probably a leaky piece of shit but still, good enough.

“They’re close. It’s not as good as ours but...”
Gamboa: Then we end this. They’re alone, distracted, and unarmed. Kill them and sneak out.
Makana: Do we really have to... I mean... from what you told me they’re probably getting sacked.
Gamboa: The pampered princess doesn’t want to bloody her hands? Don’t worry, you can order Kaia, you’re used to people doing your work.
“Shut it. Do you know how suspicious a body would look?
Gamboa: Break their neck and throw them from the tower. It will look like they died from grief.
“I preferred you when you were catty.
Gamboa: These people are slavers. Letting them live makes us no better than them.
Kaia: We could take them, prisoner, see what they know.
Gamboa: And then what? Drag them to the boat, hoping they don’t scream and get us murdered?

Gamboa looks you in the eye.
Gamboa: I know why you’re here. To build something for yourself. Something that your parents or siblings can’t take away. A Makana legacy, not your family’s. This is an act of a Chief, of a liberator. Strike them down and strike your name in history as a hero.

>Where are your workers quartered?
>When will your fellow Seekers next check up on you?

That way, we know where to throw this fool at the mercy of their own slaves, we know how long this nonsense has been going on, and we know how long we have to set some kind of ambush.

“Howzit braddah, try telling me where the workers are?

The Seeker forces a smile through a blank stare.

Gamboa: Makēwīkien jamāra-mma sū-kēñ?

The Pale Seeker smiles and turns their head to the left.

“Let ‘em go, Kaia.”

The warrior releases the researcher, who excitedly runs to a window and points out it.

Pale Seeker: Look. At shore are my workers.

The three of you peer out the window and see row upon row of tents lining the sand.
They cluster around the wa’a worksites like bees around flowers.

Gamboa: So many of them...

The activist’s hands clench the edge of the window, drawing blood on the jagged splinters.

“Easy now, we still have juice to squeeze.

You smile at the Pale Seeker.

“Very impressive! What are these wa’a, I mean boats for?

The Seeker raises their hands and halfway shouts with glee.

Pale Seeker: Legacy! Science! In future they is to the ocean. In future I is Leader of Seeker’s Guild.
Gamboa: Where! Where are...

Gamboa chokes back their rage and gives a politician’s smile.

Gamboa: Where exactly are they going to?

The Seeker gives a confused look.

Pale Seeker: The ocean?

Gamboa: Kaikai lek! They torture hundreds for their pet project and don’t even care what will be done with it!
“I know this type. They’re in it for the glory, for the thrill. It's not about what they do with these wa’a it's about showing everyone they could make them.”
Kaia: But that means someone else will get them, and who knows what happens then.

You grab the Seeker by the shoulder and give a reassuring smile.

“Brah, when are the other Seekers coming back?”
Pale Seeker: Here they come, in jūsīña three.

You hear footsteps creaking through the wooden tower.

“Gams, how long is a hyuusiinya?”

Gamboa backs against the wall and draws a small knife.

Gamboa: Not long.

Pretty decent so far. Like Makana and Stoneface (keeping the 6 Knife name guys, really? Stoneface is clearly the superior name, and one we can Stockhome Syndrome him on :V). Excited to try and potentially free the slaves, getting a ramshackle personal fleet together. I personally can’t wait to attempt some serious political maneuvering in the place that’s set to explode.

“Don’t worry. I plan to go out with way more booze or way less clothes.”

By my count of IPs there may be one more active player so I'll wait for them to vote.

In the meantime, now that this chapter is winding up, what were your general thoughts on it?
>>
>>5736703
I've enjoyed it! Makana is very dynamic and fun protag, and learning more about the weird mainland cultures (and maybe multi-armed humanoids!) is neat. Got me wondering if Pale Seeker is a 'white' guy (or at least a member of an uncontacted pale ethnic group), has albinism, or is an actual vampire or something fanatstical.
>>
>>5737141
He could be a shut-in who hasn't seen the light of day in years too.
>>
>>5737141
>>5737144
The Pale Seeker is pale due to staying indoors all day obsessing over his ego-driven projects.
With proper melanization, he would probably have the skin tone of a "high yellow" Black person or a light-skinned East Asian.
>>
>>5737724
Makes sense! I still won't be letting him near my neck anytime soon.
>>
>>5736703
I got more "try not to screw this up" vibes this chapter than last, and I'm not sure why. Maybe it's just that Gamboa has more expectations of us than Six Knife, or maybe it's just how bad things have been on The Binding for everyone but the Seekers, but either way I felt like these choices had a higher stake.
>>
Well I don't want this thread to archive before finishing so I'll start writing the update tonight. I'll just split the difference if any votes are still tied by then.

Kaia: Of course, you’re the boss, whatever you say.
“No, no no”

You offer a warm arm and she graciously accepts it around her shoulder

I’m not the boss. I’m your friend. And friends look out for each other, aurite?

Kaia flashes an awkward but genuine smile.

Kaia: Aurite.
“Shoots. Now let’s clear up some business here. Yo Gamby!”

You hop across the rocky beach to your snarky ally.

Gamboa: Running the numbers we have 10 round trips if we use our boat. Though if we get the fleet involved we can probably handle it in one shot. They want to take “Big Brain” with them, but the other Seekers are nowhere in sight.
“Probably fucked off when they saw what the workers did to our language master over here. But speaking of the fleet...”
Gamboa: You don’t want to tell them you own this rock.
“What! No, I mean...”
Gamboa: You’re here for your own power, not the Fleets. What else you do?
“Hey, look at what we did for these people.”
Gamboa: They did this for themselves. If anything you were trying to stop them.
“They’re free!”
Gamboa: A piece of paper doesn’t grant freedom. What they did today they had the power to do all their lives.
“And yet they didn’t. I inspired these people, and with this island, we can start something great for them. For everyone in this shitty country that just keeps stretching on. You think I’m using you? Using them? Using the fleet? Fine. Then use me. You know I’ll do things Nizax can’t or won’t. Have them working one angle, me working another. You wan’t to make a new world, this is how we can do it.”

Gamboa: It’s ironic. Those who bilong farwe ples call me a radical, say I do too much for my people. But if anything, I’m the great compromiser. I know honor does nothing for an empty stomach. And I would rather serve my people and their goals than fuck myself with my own purity. I don’t trust you Makana. But I trust you’ll do what’s best for yourself. That’s predictable. Usable. Safe in a way. I won’t help you in your little quest for power, but until it threatens the people I defend, I won’t get in your way.
“Why do I keep picking the speechwriters to team up with.”
Gamboa: Heh. You can talk the boat back with the crew, I’ll stay here to keep eyes on the situation.
“You know, you may be a high maka maka self-righteous blabbermouth who sniffs their own farts, but you’re cool.
Gamboa: And you may be an egotistic pampered self-absorbed entitled hambakman with no skills and less sense.

...

You laugh

“Fuck you, brah. Have fun on this rock.”

They smile and wave back to you

Gamboa: Enjoy your campaign. Try not to die, you’re really fun to tok nogutim with.
“Back at you, asshole.”

As you board the wa’a, down one irritating but kinda amusing ally but up two contracts giving you the rights to the shittiest Island you ever stepped on, you think of the Fleet and the potential in front of you.
