On a faraway world, humanity is thriving. It has spread across the surface of the planet and can be found on almost every continent. With every generation that has passed, their primitive tools have become more sophisticated and their understanding of the land has grown. There can be no doubt that the period known as prehistory is coming to an end.

We shall follow the progress of one out of six races, though there are others that are also on the verge of entering the Neolithic.

The Nehiri have oily olive skin, bulbous facial features and extremely dense black hair. They can be found along the banks of one of the greatest rivers in the world, from its glacial headwater down to its subtropical delta.

The hairless Haduli have sharp and angular faces, rust red skin and tall bodies. They can be found in a high altitude region that is arid and inhospitable, aside from the many lakes scattered throughout the rocky plateau.

The Scavic have hair that is straight and fair, soft faces and slate blue skin. They can be found in a vast and damp forest with cool summers and mild winters, full of dangerous predators and the tallest trees in the world.

The hairless Kanakai have bloody red skin, slender bodies and wide faces. They can be found throughout an archipelago of a thousand islands, where the climate is decidedly tropical and natural disasters commonly occur.

The Watuki have dark brown skin, flat faces and springy black hair. They can be found on a land bridge between two continents, whether the weather is tropical and the landscape varies dramatically, from desert to wetland.

The hairless Urlan have flabby and porous pink skin, as well as short yet sturdy bodies. They can be found along a mountainous coastline, where they inhabit the many fjords carved into the landscape by ancient glaciers.

Which shall we follow?

We will be following the progress of a tribe of the Scavic. Specimens of this race tend to have soft facial features regardless of their gender. Common traits include receding chins, button noses, chubby cheeks, oval faces and weak jawlines. Their naturally straight hair typically comes in various shades of blonde, while their round eyes are almost always blue. The smooth skin of this race is typically blue-grey, though this may vary depending on the specimen's exposure to sunlight. Particularly tanned individuals have dull mauve skin, while particularly pale individuals have powder blue skin.

They inhabit a vast forested region that they know as Grascan. Cool summers and mild winters mean that the area experiences few extremes of temperature, though rainstorms are common throughout the year and snow is not an uncommon sight during winter. The landscape is dominated by countless varieties of trees, but especially the towering blackwoods, which can reach heights of well over three hundred feet. The local fauna is equally diverse but the most notable species are the various breeds of boar, wolf, bear and wildcat that call the region home, which are responsible for a significant percentage of Scavic fatalities.

The nomadic lifestyle of the tribe that we are following means that it has wandered Grascan for quite some time but as it has developed over the centuries, it has gravitated towards a particular location that future generations may call home.

There is a great lake that many tribes of the Scavic congregate around. Here, fresh water is plentiful and the forest is less dense along its shore, creating space for habitation where predators do not lurk. However, there will be significant competition here.

There are the winding rivers that lead towards the sea. Fresh water is abundant but the trees are still thick, which means that predation remains a significant issue. A number of other river tribes means that competition with other Scavic remains a concern.

There is the coastline, where the rivers meet the sea to the north and the west. Some tribes live by the shore where the trees grow thin and they are able to live off of the bounty of the sea, without having to fear the predators that hide in the forest.

There is the wilderness, far away from any significant source of potable water and where the threat of predators is most significant. Most of the tribes have abandoned these wild places in favour of more hospitable locations, so there isn't much competition.

There is the mountain range to the south-east of Grascan that serves as a natural border. Here, the forest is thinner and there is an abundance of precious minerals. However, few tribes dwell here. Something about these mountains renders the Scavic sickly and weak.

The great lake of Grascan is known as Croglatol in the Scavic tongue – the big water of the land. With a surface area of almost ten thousand square kilometres, it is fed by glacial run-off from the south-eastern mountains and the frequent precipitation that the region is known for. Half a dozen species of salmon thrive in its waters, along with a colony of seals that followed their prey from the sea to the lake. This was made possible by a winding river that flows from Croglatol and into a bay on the western coast of the forest.

The Scavic have been drawn to Croglatol for some time now. Centuries of human activity along its shore has led to the treeline gradually being pushed back, which created spaces where a Scavil doesn't need to fear the possibility of predators lurking in the undergrowth. Many tribes have abandoned the lifestyle of the hunter-gatherer and chosen to settle down in these clearings, where they hope to grow fat off of the bounty of the lake.

Our tribe is one of the many. Like the others, it is little more than a collection of extended families that have banded together for the sake of strength in numbers. Each of these kin groups chooses its own leader in its own way and together, these chosen few shall shape the future of this nameless society. Now that they have arrived at Croglatol, they need to figure out how they are going to live.

This decision will not cause our tribe to single-mindedly abandon all other lifestyles, but it will favour the chosen way of life over the others.

They could become sedentary. A focus on agriculture along Croglatol's shore, which occasionally floods, will lead to the establishment of a static settlement. This will necessitate the construction of permanent habitats.

They could become pastoral. The Scavic haven't domesticated any beasts as of yet, but there are some tamer breeds of boar and deer that you may be able to herd and keep as livestock. This may give the tribe a head-start on domestication.

They could become amphibious. There is no need to focus on the land where Croglatol can provide everything that the tribe needs. An eagerness to exploit the lake's bounty will hasten the development of more sophisticated boats.

They could turn to marauding. As long as our tribe is stronger than its competitors, there is nothing that could stop it from taking what it needs from competing tribes. All of the profit, with none of the labour.

Where shall our tribe's focus lie?

Our tribe embraces the pastoral lifestyle. Diligent herdsmen spend their days patrolling the border between the forest and the lakeside, where they watch over the boars and deer that graze there. Over time, these animals gradually become accustomed to the presence of their wardens. Any predators or huntsmen who would dare harm them before their time are chased off, for these beasts are the property of the tribe. They are only slain when the time is right.

This way of life provides the tribe with a stable source of protein that allows them to become hardier and healthier than their rivals. Some of the herdsmen even leave behind scraps of meat for the predators that prey on their herds, in the hope of satiating their hunger and convincing them to leave the livestock alone. This may lead to interesting developments down the road.

A generation passes.

At this point in prehistory, time flies by. Civilisation develops at a snail's pace and the life of the average tribesman is mostly uneventful. Tribal feuds are mostly limited to thrown stones and bickering over territory.

This changes when the daughter of a respected elder is stolen away by young men from another tribe. Her brother was there when it happened – he saw them ambush his sister while they were watching over their family's herd. They carried her off in the direction of their territory. The tribe is outraged by this state of affairs. Something needs to be done.

>The civilisation gets -1 to Population.
>The civilisation gets -5 to Security.
>The civilisation gets -5 to Happiness.

They could retaliate. A number of tribesmen will arm themselves and prepare to launch an assault on this neighbouring tribe, with the intention of stealing back the missing woman and punishing the transgressors.

They could open a dialogue with this neighbouring tribe, in the hopes of convincing them to return the missing woman. It is quite likely that they will want something in exchange, but the elder will be willing to pay any price.

They could protect their women. This was bound to happen sooner or later, as there are few things in the world more desirable than a woman's capacity to create life. Women must be kept out of harm's way, to keep this from happening again.

They could encourage self-defence. Thrown stones are no longer enough. Men and women must be trained and prepared to bring their knives and spears to bear against anyone who dares to overstep their bounds.

They could return the favour. An eye for an eye is the appropriate solution to this situation. The tribe might even adopt this practice of stealing women in order to bolster its population, no matter the diplomatic consequences.

The elder and his family visit the tribe that is responsible for stealing away his daughter. They take half a dozen boars with them, which they offer in exchange for the taken woman. The neighbours accept the offering and the young men responsible for taking her are admonished. The offered beasts are cooked and consumed in a feast to celebrate this dialogue between tribes and soon, the elder returns with his daughter – and the child that she bears.

This becomes something of a tradition. Whenever there is friction with a neighbouring tribe, our clan sends an offering of beasts so that any transgressions might be forgiven and forgotten. This leaves our tribe on good terms with its neighbours, especially the ones that they call the women stealers – the Bravigrovic. Unfortunately, this habit of offering livestock to other clans sometimes leaves our tribe – often called the beast bringers, the Protavic – with precious little for its own people.

A generation passes.

With each passing generation, the Protavic live for longer. Until now, few tribesmen have lived long enough to be called 'elder' and each family has had its own way of treating the elderly. However, the growing number of old folk means that some sort of standardised treatment might be necessary. On one hand, the accumulated wisdom of the elders can be of great use to future generations. On the other hand, their feeble bodies mean that they can no longer contribute to the well-being of the tribe.

The tribe could revere seniority. It is seen as an honour to reach a ripe old age and it is the duty of the young to care for their elders. Anyone who dares to disrespect or neglect their seniors is punished severely.

The tribe could encourage kindness. The young are not beholden to the old, but anyone who is kind enough to look after their elders will be praised. The act of supporting those who are less able will be seen as virtuous.

The tribe could respect self-reliance. It is shameful for anyone to expect charity from others. If a man reaches the age where he can no longer look after himself, he should die with dignity rather than live like a parasite.

The tribe could eliminate weakness. To grow old is to grow weak. Only the young and the strong are respected. Anyone who is unable to contribute to the tribe is culled, which leaves more food for the able-bodied.

The tribe could leave it to the families. There is no need for there to be a universal standard among the Protavic. People should be free to treat their elderly relatives however they want.

Those who grow old do not deserve respect or sympathy simply because of their age. All of the Protavic are expected to fend for themselves and acts of charity are frowned upon. Those who grow too frail to look after themselves are left to die and families only share their food with elders who provide some sort of service, such as telling stories to the children and educating them about the world.

Less time spent caring for the elderly means that there is more time for more important tasks, such as toolmaking and stockpiling resources. Our tribe becomes more productive and living standards improve – for everyone who is capable of working. Those who are less able are not so lucky. This focus on self-sufficiency also leads to some of the tribesmen feeling less connected to their tribe and more self-centred.

A generation passes.

Though it isn't common for one of the Protavic to wrong another, it isn't unheard of either. Usually it's just a case of one herdsman stealing another's boar or some other sort of petty crime. This time, it's more serious. One man has slain another.

>The civilisation gets -1 Population.
>The civilisation gets -5 Security.

The killer seems to be as appalled by his actions as everyone else. He claims that a voice told him to do it and that he had no control over his own body when he did the deed. The killer's family insists that he cannot be held responsible for this crime, while the family of the deceased wants him to suffer for his crime. The heads of the families gather to decide his fate and set a precedent for the future.

He could be exorcised. The killer was not responsible for his actions. A ritual must be devised to rid him of any malign influence but once he has been cleansed, he may rejoin the tribe.

He could be imprisoned. He will be detained and denied any autonomy for many years. However, the tribe will still need to feed and house him until he is allowed to rejoin it.

He could be enslaved. As penance for his actions, he will serve the Protavic as a thrall for the rest of his days. A miserable life of hard labour seems like an adequate punishment.

He could be maimed. Some sort of crippling disfigurement will let everyone know his crime and dissuade him from ever killing again, even if it makes him less productive.

He could be exiled. He will be cast out into the wilderness of Grascan, never to return. He may join another tribe or he may be eaten by a bear, but he is no longer Protavic.

He could be executed. It is only fair that he suffers the same fate as the man that he has murdered. No one who takes the life of a Protavil should be allowed to live.

It is decided. The murderer will surrender his herd to the offended family. If he has none, then he will remain exile until he is able to return with something of sufficient value, that the offended family will accept as reparations. Shockingly, this decision leaves everyone happy. The murderer's family is pleased that he will remain alive and free and the victim's family is satisfied with the beasts that they are given.

This decision leaves a lasting impact on the tribe. The ownership and exchange of beasts becomes an important part of Protavic culture. Successful herdsmen are celebrated and it becomes common for animals to be exchanged for other goods. This development leads to the Protavic tribe slowly separating into two classes – those who have herds, and those who do not. Woe betide the sorry Protavil who does not own a single beast.

A generation passes.

Despite the importance that the Protavic place on pastoralism, their herds could best be described as tame rather than truly domesticated – until now. After several generations of accidental selective breeding, some beasts are showing signs of a hereditary predisposition towards life alongside humans.

>The civilisation gets +0.1 Technology.

As the tribe unlocks the secrets of animal husbandry, they discover how to domesticate a variety of different animals, but Protavic society will come to favour a particular animal above all of the others.

It could be the boar. They do not make for good companions, but they yield exceptional amounts of meat, leather and bone when they are slaughtered. They are the lifeblood of the Protavic.

It could be the duck. These birds provide all sorts of useful resources. Not only are they a source of meat, they produce a vast amount of eggs. Their feathers could be useful too.

It could be the bee. Though it is not wise to eat these little creatures, the honey that they produce is delicious and the wax that they produce could be useful to the tribe in the future.

It could be the wolf. These beasts have proven surprisingly clever and cooperative. While they do not provide the tribe with useful resources, they make for excellent companions.

It could be the wildcat. They are often admired for their beauty and while they do not produce any valuable resources, they excel at hunting the vermin that are drawn to stockpiled foodstuffs.

It could be the bear. No Scavil has ever tamed a bear before, let alone domesticated one. But imagine the possibilities if the Protavic manage to train these apex predators to serve them.

Out of all of the beasts that they domesticate, the Protavic find themselves drawn to the smallest. Their name for the honey bee is brubul – the good bug. They hollow out logs so that the brubuc may build their hives inside of them, only to blow smoke into them so that the honeycomb may be extracted. That which is edible is prized as a luxurious foodstuff, but that which is not serves as an excellent source of beeswax.

This wax is used for lubrication and waterproofing, as well as the creation of figurines and even primitive cosmetics. The tribe considers a hive as valuable as a fully grown boar and hundreds of them are scattered throughout its territory. The Protavic are especially fond of bees and consider them endearing – children are often taught to emulate their hard-working nature and to strive to become as dutiful and obedient as the humble brubul.

A generation passes.

Frequent tributes of pork and honey keep the Bravigrovic on good terms with the Protavic, but the other tribe are not so lucky. One of them earned the ire of the woman-snatching clan and was scattered to the wind when their village was raided. The Protavic learn of this when several families from the fallen tribe arrive in their territory and beg for sanctuary.

They call themselves the Pragradravic – those who make shelter. There are almost a hundred of them in total and they are known for their thatched huts, which are far sturdier than the primitive tents of our clan. If they are allowed to dwell in Protavic land, the tribe may benefit from their expertise. This may come at the cost of destroying our tribe's truce with the Bravigrovic.

They could be accepted. No matter the consequences, the Pragradravic will be accepted by the Protavic, along with all of their traditions.

They could be assimilated. These refugees are welcome, as long as they abandon their old ways and embrace the lifestyle of the Protavic.

They could be enslaved. The hut builders are only welcome as long as they serve and accept that they are now the property of our tribe.

They could be denied. The Protavic cannot afford to earn the ire of the Bravigrovic like this tribe did. They will have to find somewhere else.

They could be given to the Bravigrovic. They could be offered to the woman-snatchers in the place of the usual tribute, as a gesture of good will.

If Pragradravic create greater huts, this will eventually lead to building of castles or other stronger defensive structures. Once we build something as strong as that, those Bravigrovic retards won’t lay a finger on us. Good luck learning how to do siegecraft and stuff, they probably don’t have the brains for that.

We don’t have an aggressive military mindset so let’s have a defensive military mindset instead. The best offense is a good defense.

The Pragradravic are allowed to dwell in Protavic territory, as long as they assimilate into Protavic society. Any traditions that they once had must be abandoned in favour of apiculture and the practice of exchanging beasts for goods. A few of them refuse this offer and move on, but the majority choose to stay and adopt our tribe's way of life.

The Protavic benefit from the secrets of architecture that the newcomers bring with them. Wattle and daub huts spring up across the tribe's territory, with thatched roofs made out of knotted reeds. Those who live in these structures are less exposed to the elements and tend to live healthier lives.

Unfortunately, the decision to integrate the Pragradravic into our tribe has offended the Bravigrovic. Not a year goes by without women or livestock being stolen and the practice of offering tribute is no longer enough to make the woman-snatchers stop. In addition to this, the Protavic people become increasingly traditional and begin to shun those who do not adhere to the tribe's customs.

A generation passes.

Despite the increased aggression of the Bravigrovic tribe, many of the tribesmen live prosperous lives and find themselves with plenty of time to ponder things other than their survival. It's not uncommon for herdsmen and apiarists to spend hours of every day contemplating the meaning of life and other such things. Questions regarding these existential topics become so common that the heads of the families convene to discuss them and decide upon an answer.

First of all, which question is the most important one in the eyes of the Protavic people?

“How does the world work?” So much of the universe is shrouded in mystery. Think of the things that the Protavic could accomplish if they understood the true nature of the world.

“Where did everything come from?” The world is such a complicated place, but something must have made it. Our tribe must figure out who – or what – is responsible.

“What happens to us after we die?” There is such a dramatic difference between the living and the dead. The Protavic need to uncover the truth behind this morbid transformation.

“Why are we wasting our time like this?” There is no need for tribesmen to ask such stupid questions when they could be using their time more productively instead. This is pointless.

The leaders of the Protavic are divided. Some of them are more interested in the inner workings of reality and wish to understand how the world works, while others can't help but wonder about the phenomenon of death and what will happen to them once the life leaves their body. The tribe's wisest suggest that these two questions are inextricably linked – the rules that govern life and death must play a fundamental part in the universe.

During this convention, every head of every family is given the opportunity to share their views and theories. Some of them are too vague, while others are so outlandish that they serve as a source of amusement. In the end, the leaders of the tribe are left with a handful of possibilities that they are willing to consider.

One leader suggests that there is an animating force in the air. The wind is the source of all movement. He believes that without this mystical energy, the whole world would fall still. Animals take in this animating essence with every breath, only to release it with their dying gasp. That is why the voices of the departed can be heard in the wind.

A second leader suggests water is the source of all life and that the water of the lake Croglatol is the most sacred of all. Once imbibed, this sacred substance is transformed into blood. Death occurs if one's blood becomes stale from a lack of water, if one's blood is allowed to leak from one's body or if one's blood grows too impure with age or disease.

A third leader suggests that all living things harbour a sacred essence. When a man or beast dies, its spirit enters a seed and allows it to grow. This is why the act of eating is so vital to survival, it is the transferral of spiritual energies from one body to another, no matter whether the body that is being consumed is that of a plant or an animal.

A fourth leader suggests that the laws of reality are governed by the ancestors. The world seems to grow more complicated with every passing day. This is because when a man dies, his soul is judged and if he is considered worthy, he is allowed to join the ancestors in another realm, where he may impose a single rule upon the world.

These are the suggestions that the Protavic are drawn to but in the end, they decide upon a single belief that will serve as the truth of the tribe.

>The civilisation gets +0.05 Culture.
>The civilisation gets +5 Health, Prosperity and Productivity.

It is decided that all living things harbour a sacred essence. When the body of a dead man is interred in the earth, his essence dwells within the soil until a seed is planted in it. It is then given to that seed, which grows into a shrub. When the plant is eaten by a beast, that essence dwells within it until it is consumed or produces offspring, which may inherit the mystical energy known as Drocrom – the light of the land. Through an endless cycle of consumption, it passes on from one entity to the next.

These teachings quickly spread throughout the Protavic and lead to a few interesting developments. Human corpses are disposed of via burial, though the tribe makes a ritual out of planting sacred flowers in the soil where the dead lie. It is believed that these flowers take the Drocrom of the departed and then pass it on to the bees that gather pollen from them, who return it to the Protavic people in the form of blessed honey.

Food becomes an even more important part of the tribe's culture. Everything that they eat must be prepared according to rituals of cleansing, in order to rid the Drocrom of any impurities. This process leads to improved food hygiene among the Protavic. In addition to this, they take great pride in their feasts and every family strives to outdo the others when it comes to the quantity and quality of food that they produce.

A generation passes.

The Bravigrovic tribe remains hostile towards the Protavic. Some of the families still offer tribute to the woman-snatchers, fearing that they might attack if the tribe stops supplying them with pork and honey. Unfortunately, this doesn't do anything to stop all of the kidnapping and theft.

In fact, one day, a handful of woman-snatchers turn up to deliver an ultimatum. If the Protavic wish for these incidents to end, they will need to regularly offer women to the Bravigrovic on top of the usual tribute. One from every family, every year. If the Protavic cannot agree to this, then they will suffer dire consequences.

The tribe could agree to their demands. This will likely cripple the growth of the tribe, but at least it will repair the tribe's relationship with the Bravigrovic.

The tribe could surrender the descendants of the Pragradravic. Over a hundred people will be given to the woman-snatchers, but at least the growth of the tribe won't be impeded.

The tribe could greatly increase the amount of tribute. It's clear that the Bravigrovic are no longer satisfied with gifts, but maybe that's because they're not being given enough.

The tribe could refuse to pander to them. It's time for the practice of offering tribute to come to an end. The Protavic will just have to deal with the consequences.

Entering a Special Situation: The Bravigrovic Conundrum.

>Special Situations represent periods of upheaval that usually don't last long enough for our civilisation's Population, Technology or Culture to passively grow. Despite the short amount of time that they represent, every Special Situation will likely be the source of dramatic change for our civilisation, be it for weal or woe.

Those who lead the families share furtive glances with each other as the Bravigrovic messenger delivers his tribe's terms. Their purple lips are curved downward in worried frowns and angry scowls. When the woman-snatcher is finished making demands of the Protavic, one of the family heads – a heavyset man clad in animal skins and a cloak of woven reeds – speaks. He offers the messenger and his companions a hearty meal of honey roasted meat as a gesture of hospitality but while they are eating, the tribe's leaders shall discuss the Bravigrovic's ultimatum.

As soon as the outsiders are out of earshot, the leaders of the Protavic express their outrage. The demands of the woman-snatchers would choke the life out of the tribe – the family heads are unanimous in their desire to reject these terms. Instead, it is decided that the Protavic shall seek out other tribes that suffer from Bravigrovic aggression. Most of the clans are very insular and don't interact outside of territorial disputes, but the generous nature of the Protavic means that some may be willing to lend our tribe their ears, and maybe even their strength.

But before the family heads can discuss the details of this plan, it is agreed that something needs to be done about the messenger and his companions.

The tribe could let them go. Let the woman-snatchers know that the Protavic deny their demands. This will likely lead to an increase in incidents and hostilities until the Bravigrovic are dealt with.

The tribe could kill them. The tribe outnumbers them so heavily that success is guaranteed, but when the Bravigrovic eventually figure out what happened to them, they will want revenge.

The tribe could satisfy them. Let them leave with this year's tribute – one woman from each of the seven great families. This will keep the Bravigrovic happy and offguard while the Protavic plot their demise.

>The civilisation gains +0.02 Militarism.

There will be no mercy for the messenger or his comrades. At the very most, the Protavic shall have a week before the Bravigrovic realise what has happened. Once they do, the woman-snatchers will doubtlessly be outraged and prepare to scatter our tribe to the wind. The beast-bringers shall need to be ready by then.

The honoured guests are too busy stuffing their faces with glazed pork to notice a crowd form around them. They believe the Protavic to be a timid people, incapable of violence or defiance. So when one of them has his throat slit by a piece of sharpened flint, the look on his face is one of dumbstruck disbelief. The others try to struggle to their feet but they are mobbed before they're able to stand. As for the messenger, his skull is smashed open by a pig femur, held by the very same man who offered him this meal in the first place.

Their corpses shall be buried in Protavic soil – through the cycle of consumption, their Drocrom shall pass on to the Protavic people and empower them. The Bravigrovic shall be denied the sacred essence of these men. But now that the guests have been dealt with, the details of the plan need to be discussed.

There are several tribes that dwell alongside the shore of the Croglatol. Aside from the Bravigrovic, the closest clans would be the Toprocravic, the Bruslavic, the Glachovic and the Vuvovic.

The Toprocravic are those who wear seal skins and traverse the Croglatol in dugout canoes, rather than the primitive rafts of other tribes.
The Bruslavic are those who have beautiful voices, who are said to record and pass on all of their knowledge in the form of song.
The Glachovic are those with long reach, who hunt the wolves, bears and big cats of Grascan with mighty throwing sticks.
The Vuvovic are those who drink blood. With an ominous name like that, most tribes go out of their way to try and avoid them.

Despite the likelihood that they are all hostile towards the woman-snatching tribe, it is not guaranteed that they would rush to the rescue of another tribe. Some of them may only join the fight if they are promised a reward. The Protavic must decide what spoils they would be willing to part with.

They could offer nothing. In this instance, it's unlikely that anyone other than the most devoted enemies of the woman-snatchers would come to the aid of the Protavic.

They could offer Bravigrovic territory. The land of the woman-snatchers could be offered as a reward and given to an allied tribe.

They could offer Bravigrovic captives. Any of the woman-snatchers who survive could be offered as a reward and assimilated into an allied tribe.

They could offer everything. In this case, our tribe will not gain any territory or population from the coming battle. The only reward will be the end of the Bravigrovic.

>>
>>5695616
>offer captives

Land is useful, who knows maybe there is an oil or natural gas reservoir or other useful materials in that land which we might find out in the future.

My guess is Toprocravic and Vuvovic will most likely join us because toprocravic doesn’t care about land as much and Vuvovic would be satisfied with the captives.

I’m guessing the Bruslavic won’t join us because they seem like pacifists.

We should be able to win this war.
>>
>>5695616
>Offer Bravigrovic captives.
"Our clan is known for our gifting and bringing of beasts. The Bravigrovic have proven themselves merely the equal of beasts, so we shall make a gift of them to any who join us."
>>
Any of the Bravigrovic who survive the coming battle shall be offered to our tribe's allies. Hopefully the promise of captives will be enough to coax at least one of the other clans into lending the Protavic their aid – but which clan? The messengers who visit the tribes shall offer some livestock as a gift and sign of good will, but the promise of a greater reward will be what sways them to our side.

Thanks to their canoes, the Toprocravic are almost guaranteed to arrive on time, should they choose to lend their strength to the beast-bringers. However, their love for the lake might be detrimental. They may be so used to slinging spears from their boats that they have forgotten how to fight on land.

The Bruslavic have no reputation for any sort of violence. On one hand, they are unlikely to contribute much in the fight against the Bravigrovic. On the other, they are likely to have suffered much more from the aggression of the woman-snatchers. It's hard to say whether they will involved themselves, or how much they will contribute.

The Glachovic are undoubtedly the most martial tribe of these four. With their throwing spears, they will be able to slay the Bravigrovic with great efficiency. However, some of the leaders question the wisdom of bolstering the strength of one of the mightiest lake tribes.

The Vuvovic have a grisly reputation. If they truly drink the syrupy brown blood of the Scavic people, who is to say that they will not turn on the Protavic if the woman-snatchers are unable to slake their thirst? Then again, it is hard to say if there's any truth to the rumours that surround this tribe. Maybe it's all a big misunderstanding.

There is the option of splitting the reward between all of the tribes that come to our clan's aid. On one hand, this may be enough to sway more than one of the tribes. On the other hand, it is hard to predict which of the tribes will be willing to lend the Protavic their strength.

Finally, there is the possibility of deceiving the tribes. The Protavic could promise each tribe that they will receive all of the captives. Once the battle is over, perhaps they will turn on each other as they fight over the promised reward. However, there is the possibility that they may take out their anger on the beast-bringers instead.

Which of the tribes shall be promised any surviving Bravigrovic?

This is the best choice. Even if Toprocravic can’t fight on land, if they can fight on the lake, we can make sure Bravigrovic won’t retreat into the lake and take the fight there. Using the combined strength of our tribe and Bruslavic, we should be able to overpower them on land. We can basically surround them on land and water.

Vuvovic is a wild card. I’m pretty sure they will accept our offer and I think they would formidable ally on land but idk, they do sound kinda loony. Best to avoid them unless we have no choice.

There is one cause for concern lads. We don’t really know the population of women-snatchers.
Judging by their nickname, they would have the most amount of women which would mean higher rate of growth therefore they probably have the highest amount of people compared to other tribes. Not good news. Numbers make a big difference in war.

If we had more time, we could have sent scouts and assessed the situation. We could have found out how many people they have roughly and make necessary adjustments. Ultimately, the main battle is fought on land. If we don’t have enough numbers on land, we can lose the battle. I’m just hoping us and Glachovic would be enough.

I’m not a big fan of Bruslavica because they have no martial prowess. Protavic doesn't have many warriors so have two clans that don’t really have much experience with battle against an aggressive, war-like foe - keep in mind, Bravigrovic wiped out another clan before - it’s not gonna look good.
>>
>>5696433
>The Glachovic
>The Vuvovic
The woman-snatchers are the largest and most powerful tribe. We are fairly large but lack the martial prowess. We will gain warriors through this experience.

If we side with the two (assumedly) more martial tribes, they will likely take the lead in the fighting and suffer the brunt of the casualties. They will have the strength we need to beat the woman-snatchers. If we remain on good terms, we will have great allies who we may even be able to unite with and later form a sort of empire. If one turns on us, we will have the martial experience and the other allied tribe to fend them off.

Locking the vote there so I can work on an update soon.

It is decided. Any captives that are taken shall be split between the sealskin tribe and the singing tribe, should they come to the aid of the Protavic. As for the blood-drinkers and the stick-wielding tribe, they shall be given gifts and offered the opportunity to join the war effort, but they will not be promised any reward.

For each of these tribes, half a dozen beast-bringers depart with half a dozen boars in tow. Hopefully, they will reach their destinations before the Bravigrovic realise that their own messengers were slain. When they do, they will doubtlessly launch a retaliatory attack.

The decision has been made and the leaders of the tribe return to their families, so that they might prepare for the coming battle. However, there is one last problem that needs to be tackled – the matter of women.

Until now, the sexes have been seen as equal by the Protavic people. They both carry their weight and perform the same tasks most of the time. Despite the relative prosperity of our tribe, the struggle to survive during such a primitive age means that everyone needs to do their part.

Yet there is no ignoring the fact that women are the source of children – that is why the Bravigrovic covet them. If they are allowed to fight alongside the men of the Protavic, there is the chance that they might fall in battle. It cannot be denied that if the tribe loses a significant amount of its female population, its growth will be damaged – and there also those who say that women lack the strength of men. However, is it truly wise for the tribe to cut the size of its fighting force in half?

So, who should fight for the tribe?

The Protavic could make everyone fight. Every man and woman, provided that they are healthy and able, must fight for the tribe. Those who do not are traitors. Roughly two thirds of the tribe will fight.

The Protavic could make the women stay behind. All men are expected to fight, while all women are expected to remain behind and defend the future of the tribe. Roughly a third of the tribe will fight.

The Protavic could allow women to volunteer. While it is the place of the men to fight for the tribe, the women are free to choose for themselves. Roughly half of the tribe will fight.

The Protavic could allow everyone to choose. No one has to fight if they don't want to. Those who would rather remain at home are allowed to. Roughly a quarter of the tribe will fight.

>The civilisation gets a Fighting Population of 220.

Women who are willing and able to fight alongside men shall be allowed to. However, if they do not wish to fight, the tribe shall understand. Their lives are more valuable than those of men, for it is their wombs that the future of the Protavic shall come from – but if they want to serve the tribe in battle, they shall not be denied the opportunity. The men of the tribe are less fortunate and have no choice but to serve in battle, for they are inherently more disposable.

The atmosphere is tense as the tribesmen go about their daily lives, knowing that battle is just around the corner. Thankfully, the Toprocravic arrive just three days after the messengers were sent. They have accepted the proposal and will fight alongside the beast-bringers against the savage Bravigrovic. They bring over a hundred and fifty able-bodied men with them, armed and ready for battle. Though the majority of them remain aloof and stick to the shoreline, many of the lake-dwellers are charmed by the generosity of our tribe and partake in the Protavic tradition of trading goods and services, offering sealskins in exchange for the taste of honey.

Two more days pass, with no word from the other tribes or the messengers who went to visit them. This is to be expected – they are further away and more difficult to contact than the lake-dwelling Toprocravic. They shall be given two more days before your combined forces make their move and launch an assault on the woman-snatchers.

Unfortunately, the Bravigrovic beat our tribe to the punch.

Over two hundred raiders descend upon Protavic territory during the middle of the night, armed with knives and torches. Our people were aware of this possibility and had posted sentries at the borders of their lands, but word hasn't spread quickly enough to negate the element of surprise. As our tribe and its allies stir, the woman-snatchers surge forward, burning huts, stealing women and slaughtering livestock as they go.

How much damage will they cause before they are pushed back – if they are pushed back at all?

The sentries move quickly, bellowing warnings at the top of their lungs as the woman-snatchers advance. Most of the huts are abandoned long before the Bravigrovic reach them. While the raiders push deeper into our tribe's territory, a retaliatory force of almost four hundred men and women is assembled. They rush forward to meet the enemy, driven by the desire for revenge after generations of humiliation.

The woman-snatchers never expected to face such numbers, or such ferocity. With the advantage of surprise stolen from them, they find themselves overwhelmed and driven back. For every one of the beast-bringers or sealskins that falls in battle, ten of the Protavic are crushed by the combined might of two tribes. Before too long, those who are still able to run are forced to flee, leaving behind their dead and their wounded. The victors fill their night with their celebratory cries and the insults that they hurl at the backs of the retreating raiders.

When dawn comes, three of the Protavic have been slain in battle and a single woman has gone missing. Nine of the beast-bringers are severely wounded, to the point where they are incapable of fighting any longer. The Toprocravic have suffered similar casualties – two dead, five wounded. As for the wife-snatchers, their losses are astonishing. Almost fifty of them lie dead on beast-bringer soil and over sixty of them have been left behind, too wounded to carry on fighting.

Regarding the wounded, one of the leaders of the Toprocravic expresses a desire to slay them – they are all men and the sealskins are only interested in claiming the women and the children of the woman-snatching tribe. However, one of the Protavic objects to this, a wiry young swineherd supposedly responsible for slaying five raiders. He believes that it is wrong to execute them, when they would be far more useful if kept alive. Thanks to his performance in battle, he has earned the favour of many of the tribe.

The wounded could be executed. It is the desire of the sealskins and they were promised that they could do whatever they pleased with any captives that were taken. To go against this promise might damage the tribe's bond with them.

The wounded could be incorporated. If the Toprocravic don't want them, then why shouldn't the Protavic take them? They can join the beast-bringing tribe, though they might bring their woman-snatching ways with them.

The wounded could be enslaved. It is a suitable punishment after all of the suffering that they have put neighbouring tribes through. Those who are captured by the Protavic shall not be seen as people but as property, no different from beasts.

In the end, the wounded woman-snatchers are executed. Their syrupy brown blood is spilt on our tribe's soil and their bodies are interred beneath it. In time, white and yellow flowers shall blossom on their graves and their essence will pass on to the Protavic people in the form of blessed honey. Such is the sacred cycle of consumption.

The young warrior and those who supported him are upset with this outcome and there is some grumbling that the tribe's leaders care more about appeasing their allies than the well-being of their own people. In the end though, it is nothing more than grumbling. The Protavic cannot afford to fight each other when another battle looms on the horizon.

Two more days pass and the Bruslavic arrive. The singers bring a host of a hundred men and women with them, armed with heavy cudgels carved from tree limbs. Though they are not particularly numerous or hardy, they are particularly eager for revenge. For decades, they have been forced to surrender their women to the Bravigrovic, but it is time for their humiliation to come to an end. They shall bolster their ailing population with captives taken from the woman-snatchers and in time, they shall thrive once more.

The greatest surprise is the arrival of the Vuvovic, the tribe of blood-drinkers who were promised nothing. They came at the behest of the messenger who was sent to them, a cunning woman who didn't just offer the pigs that were brought as gifts, but the blood of the dead who were slain. This was seemingly enough to satisfy them. They bring over a hundred and fifty warriors with them, all armed with wicked knives and decorated with ritual scarification.

When the tribes launch their assault on the territory of the Bravigrovic, they attack with a force that is over six hundred strong. The only clan that did not answer the call is the Glachovic, but the stick-wielders aren't needed. The victory of the Protavic and their allies is all but guaranteed.

>The Protavic and their allies win against the Bravigrovic by a difference of 3 – they achieve a Costly Victory.

>The civilisation gets -14 Population and Fighting Population.
>The civilisation gets -45 Fighting Population until the end of the Special Situation.

And so victory has been achieved, but at a heavy cost. Over a hundred warriors from the allied tribes were severely injured and over forty have been slain. Sixteen have gone missing, most of them women. As for the Bravigrovic, they fought fiercely and many of them battled until the bitter end. Over seventy of them lie dead, while over thirty of them are wounded. Almost two hundred of them have fled their territory, to live and fight another day.

The same can't be said for their women, children and elders. Over five hundred of them have been left behind – after generations of snatching the women of other tribes and assimilating the bulk of the Pragradravic, there can be no doubt that the Bravigrovic were the most populous tribe by far. The sealskins and the singers busy themselves dividing these captives between them, while the Protavic tribe admire the vast tracts of shoreline that shall soon be theirs.

As for the Vuvovic, they get to work slaying the wounded and drinking the blood of the dead. They slice narrow incisions in the carcasses, so that they may gather sticky brown vitae in cups hewn from bone and drink it in accordance with their dark rituals. The Toprocravic, Bruslavic and many of the Protavic are appalled by this practice – some of them even want to turn on the blood-drinkers and slay them for their profane acts.

The words of one of the tribe's finest warriors are the only reason why bloodshed doesn't immediately occur. The brawny elder calls for peace and cooperation and insists that the Vuvovic should be allowed to drink from the corpses of the enemy, as thanks for their contribution during the battle. However, the cunning woman who garnered their aid in the first place suggests the Protavic should join in – why shouldn't they drink the Drocrom of the foe straight from the source and bypass the cycle of consumption entirely?

Our tribe could embrace blood-drinking. While there are many who would be unhappy with this development, perhaps there is strength to be found in the Vuvovic way of life.

Our tribe could allow the Vuvovic to drink. This tolerance of the blood-drinkers may upset the Toprocravic and Bruslavic, but it is what the macabre tribe was promised.

Our tribe could deny the Vuvovic their prize. They were promised blood and they will definitely be angered by this decision, but the messenger had no right to make that promise.

Our tribe could attack the blood-drinkers. This dark tribe represents a potential threat in the future. You should dispose of them now, rather than wait for them to grow in strength.

The leaders of the Protavic throw their weight behind the stoic old warrior – the Vuvovic should be free to drink from the corpses of the enemy. Though they may imbibe the essence of life in a more perverse fashion, they earned this right when they came to our tribe's aid. The singers and sealskins aren't particularly pleased with this decision, but they're not about to fight both the beast-bringers and the blood-drinkers.

While the wounded are being tended to and the dead are being drained of their blood, the leaders of the tribes convene to discuss the next course of action. After all, almost two hundred Bravigrovic warriors survived the battle and fled into the wilderness. It is unlikely that they are very well organised, after their territory was stolen from them and they were forced to flee. Some may try to find another tribe that will accept them, while others may linger nearby and seek to reclaim what was lost.

Of the other three tribes, the Bruslavic are the only one that is eager to hunt down the surviving woman-snatchers. They are hungry for vengeance, after everything that their tribe has been put through. However, they do not have the numbers to face the Bravigrovic alone. The Toprocravic have no interest in fighting any longer – they have the captives that they were promised and they stand to gain little from any further conflict. The Vuvovic are similarly satisfied – their thirst has been sated and having witnessed how costly the last battle was, they have no desire to throw away any more lives.

That leaves the elders of the Bruslavic pleading for the assistance of the beast-bringers. Without our tribe's aid, they stand no chance of wiping out the woman-snatchers for good. However, the singers are not particularly fierce fighters and the Protavic have already suffered significant casualties – with almost twenty dead, over forty wounded and several missing, the tribe has lost a quarter of its fighting force. Can they afford more losses?

Our tribe could hunt down the Bravigrovic. Together, the beast-bringers and the singers will follow the woman-snatchers into the depths of the forest and put an end to them, once and for all.

Our tribe could refuse to help the Bruslavic. By following them into the forest, the Protavic could be stumbling into a trap. The beast-bringers have lost enough of their people as it is.

Our tribe could buy the aid of the Toprocravic. The sealskins might be willing to fight if the beast-bringers offer them the territory of the woman-snatchers. Unfortunately, this means our tribe will have gained nothing from this conflict.

In the end, our tribe refuses to aid the singers. Now is the time for the licking of wounds, not for pursuing the woman-snatchers in the undergrowth of Grascan. Besides, in their disorganised state, it's very likely that they will succumb to the wilderness and end up eaten by bears.

Those who lead the Bruslavic are not so confident. Combined with the Protavic's refusal to condemn the blood-drinkers, this leads to the singers departing with a poor impression of the beast-bringers. They leave with their share of captives and express no desire to engage with our tribe again.

On the other hand, the Toprocravic and the Vuvovic tribes both express some interest in working with the Protavic, for different reasons. Ours is the only tribe that tolerates the vile rites of the blood-drinkers, while the sealskins appreciate that they were allowed to execute any Bravigrovic warriors that were captured. In the future, the beast-bringing tribe may be be able to forge closer bonds with either of these clans – perhaps even both.

Once the allied tribes have departed with their spoils, the Protavic are free to claim the territory of the woman-snatchers. Suddenly, the amount of land that belongs to our tribe more than doubles. There's suddenly an abundance of pastures for swineherds and a surfeit of meadows for apiarists – no matter what role they play in the tribe, every man and woman of the Protavic has more than enough space to thrive and lead healthy, happy lives.

This also means that the tribe is spread thin across the available land, which poses a security risk. As weeks, months and eventually years pass, it is revealed that some of the Bravigrovic have survived in the wilderness – not as a tribe, but as isolated gangs of marauders. They shall never pose a significant threat to the Protavic ever again, but they will remain a minor nuisance and be responsible for the disappearance of livestock and the occasional kidnapping. In time, they shall come to be known as the Grovic, worthless parasites who live of the fringes of society and steal from their betters.

As the beast-bringers move on from their conflict with the woman-snatchers, they come to revere the deeds of one participant more than any other and elevate their family above the rest.

For her resourcefulness and her clever ways, the woman known as Glavolan is celebrated by the entire tribe. All of the Protavic know of her and tell tales about how her silver tongue garnered the aid of the blood-drinker. Of course, few of them know the truth – that she suggested that the beast-bringers should join the Vuvovic in their profane revelry. Fortunately, the leaders of the families do not wish to risk internal strife by sullying the name of their tribe's heroine.

Ingenuity becomes a virtue among the Protavic people. Children are given riddles and puzzles to solve, in order to encourage them to think outside of the box. While there is value in orthodoxy, the beast-bringers praise those who are able to innovate, even if it means going against the traditions of the tribe and the wisdom of one's forebears.

Ending a Special Situation: The Bravigrovic Conundrum.

A generation passes.

Of all of the tribes that dwell on the shores of Croglatol, the Protavic are by far the most prosperous. Few of them know what it is like to go hungry and thanks to the abundance of sustenance, families are now able to support far more children. Yet as their numbers swell, the families of the Protavic find themselves growing apart from each other during this period of plenty.

>The civilisation gets +0.5% Rate of Growth.
>The civilisation gets -5 Cohesion.

Glavolan, now the elderly head of the Bupac bloodline, summons the other leaders of the Protavic in order to confront this issue. If the tribe is to endure for generations to come, she believes that the families must discard the disparate practices that separate them.

In order to accomplish this, she believes that all of the great families must adopt a shared method of selecting their leaders, instead of having their own individual processes.

Leaders could be selected according to their wealth. The one who owns the most beasts is clearly the most influential beast-bringer and should lead their family.

Leaders could be selected in a contest of wits. The one who is judged to be the cleverest and most cunning should be given the responsibility of leading their family.

Leaders could be selected according to their essence. Through peculiar rituals, the Drocrom of the candidates is assessed and the one with the mightiest spirit is selected.

Leaders could be selected by the people. The men and women of the family should have the right to choose the person that they believe is the most deserving of leading them.

Leaders could be selected according to family traditions. Glavolan is wrong, there is nothing wrong with each family having its own practices and customs.

The legend of Glavolan has led to a fixation with cleverness. The leaders of the Protavic decide that only the most cunning men and women should be allowed to lead their families. In order to assess the intelligence of the tribe, an exercise is developed that involves moving a set of beeswax tokens across a grid and using them to eliminate the opponent's tokens. It is called Blocrum – the little war – and it is one of the first games to ever be made.

A great deal of importance is attributed to this game and those who are good at it, but it is not the only method of testing the intelligence of leadership candidates. Riddles also play an important part in the contest, as a true leader must be able to solve any puzzle that they are confronted with. As time passes, intelligence begins to be seen as the result of a critical mass of Drocrom – the cleverest Protavic are the ones with the strongest essence, while those who are incapable of playing Blocrum or solving riddles clearly possess weak spirits.

A generation passes.

As the population and wealth of the tribe continues to grow, new methods of storage are required in order to contain all of the resources that the Protavic have accumulated. This eventually leads to the development of earthenware and primitive pots, that are used for the storage of honey and other such perishable things.

>The civilisation gets +0.05 Technology.

Another development soon follows. An adventurous Protavil leaves a mixture of water and honey in a clay jar for a little too long and discovers that it tastes rather strange. More importantly, the more he drinks, the happier he feels. He decides to share this concoction of fermenting honey water with others, who share it with their acquaintances. The leaders of the families need to act quickly, before the entire tribe is swept up in this craze.

Our tribe could embrace alcohol. If it lifts the spirits of the people, how could it be a bad thing? This fermented honey drink should be celebrated and enjoyed by everyone.

Our tribe could reserve the honey wine for religious purposes. Something special has happened to the honey's essence. This strange concoction should be reserved for holy days and rituals.

Our tribe could reserve it as a trade good. Our tribesmen should not imbibe something that will cloud their minds, yet our tribe could profit off of this substance by offering it to its neighbours in exchange for more valuable goods.

Our tribe could ban the poison. There is nothing to be gained from clouding one's mind with this toxic concoction. The Protavic should be more careful about what they eat and drink.

How do our tribe's leaders react?

Rather than encourage the casual consumption of this honey water, the leaders of the Protavic seek to limit the use of alcohol to events of religious and cultural significance. Whenever a child is born or a tribesman dies or a new leader is selected, cups of butol are distributed among those who have reason to revel or grieve, to bolster their drocrom and grant them strength in the coming days.

Each great family comes to possess a master of rites, a sort of prototypical priest who has a ceremonial role rather than a practical one. They are responsible for the brewing and safekeeping of butol, a process that involves the predigestion of the essence found within the honey, so that it may join more readily with the spirit of the one who imbibes it. At least, that is how they interpret the science behind fermentation and intoxication.

A generation passes.

Throughout their existence, the Protavic have valued their women rather highly. They sacrificed a great deal of wealth in order to secure the safety of their women from the Bravigrovic, they allow their women to fight for the tribe of their own volition (whereas men have no choice in the matter) and the first great hero in the history of the tribe was Glavolan – a woman.

This leads to some members of the Protavic valuing women more highly than men. After all, their wombs are the source of the tribe's future, the sacred vessels in which essence of the mother and the father mingles and coalesces into offspring. This religious importance, coupled with the historical precedent, may result in some dramatic changes in the tribe.

They could become matriarchal. Those who are male are seen as disposable labourers and warriors, while those who are female are responsible for leading the tribe and dictating its future.

They could instate polyandry. Women are expected to have multiple male partners, so that their wombs may swallow greater quantities of drocrom and produce stronger children.

They could worship feminity. Though the women of the tribe will not gain any practical power, the Protavic will come to revere the female body and grant it even more religious importance.

They could protect women. Those who are female are seen as precious. They shall no longer be allowed to fight and men shall be burdened with the responsibility of protecting them.

They could disregard this nonsense. Women are not more valuable than men and those who believe otherwise are a minority. This foolish belief must be eradicated and the tribe must return to its senses.

In Protavic culture, the female body becomes something sacred. It is seen as a beautiful and miraculous thing, capable of producing and nurturing new life. Substantial breasts, hips, bellies and thighs are all seen as signs of fertility and women who possess these traits are seen as incredibly desirable, if not blessed by the Allmother herself.

Every living thing has a mother, a womb that is responsible for its creation in which its essence coalesced. Yet who is the first mother, who is the divinity that is responsible for everything that has ever lived? In the end, it is decided that the land itself must be the mother, the womb from which all life sprang. The Protavic name for their world and their creator god becomes one and the same, expressed in a single syllable – she is An, the Allmother.

With this development, the family celebrants become exclusively female and their responsibilities multiply. Not only are they in charge of brewing butol and overseeing ceremonies, but they are responsible for maintaining the good health of their family's women, especially those who are with child. They are the drobrac, the devoted disciples of An.

A generation passes.

The thieving Grovic who dwell on the fringes of Protavic society usually escape justice. Whenever they steal livestock or women, they typically disappear into the forest where they either get eaten by a bear or lie low until the tribe lowers its guard once more. This time however, one of the great families was able to track down and capture the gang of Grovic that was responsible for stealing its swine.

The beast-bringers usually punish their own with the confiscation of property, but these scum are not Protavic. They are vagabonds who own nothing of value and there is no point in exiling them – they will just wait in the woods until they can strike again. These outsiders deserve a different punishment.

They could be assimilated. They steal because they do not know the right way to live. Once they are educated, they should be allowed to live among the Protavic.

They could be enslaved. After everything that they have stolen from the tribe, it only seems right that these scum should give something back for a change, via hard labour.

They could be executed. Only the harshest possible punishment will convince the Grovic to leave the Protavic alone. Whenever they are caught, they must be slain without mercy.

They could be given to the Vuvovic. Our tribe still has some ties to the blood-drinkers. This bond could be strengthened by surrendering these captives to them, to suffer a grisly fate.

Outsiders who would try to exploit the Protavic people are punished with slavery. They spend the rest of their lives serving the beast-bringers as chattel, on the same level as the animals that the tribe herds. They perform the tasks that are considered undesirable by most of the tribesmen, such as cleaning and construction. Thanks to the hardship that they endure, the Protavic are free to spend more time tending to their beasts and honing their minds.

The prospect of slavery is enough to convince many of the Grovic to leave the beast-bringers alone, which leads to a decline in the number of thefts and kidnappings. There are those who sympathise with the plight of their servants – they believe that the surfeit of essence that men harbour elevates them above all other animals and that it is wrong to treat humans like property. However, the vast majority of the tribe has no issue with this development.

A generation passes.

Not every outsider who joins the tribe is brought in as a slave. Visits from the boat-dwelling Toprocravic are frequent, as there are many who seek to trade sealskin leather and pieces of scrimshaw for pots of honey and beeswax figurines. When they come to the Protavic, they are treated as guests of honour. They get to enjoy the intoxicating taste of butol during sacred feasts and play games of blocrum with their hosts. Before long, a lot of these visitors start to feel more at home among the beast-bringers than their own people.

Several of the sealskins defect to our tribe with every year that passes. When the Toprocravic finally discover where all of their tribesmen are disappearing to, some of their leaders are outraged and demand the return of their people. This development threatens to reduce the budding friendship that the Protavic have with the boat-dwellers.

The defectors could be accepted. They came to our tribe because they admired its culture and its prosperity. It is only right that they are allowed to become a part of it.

The defectors could be returned. The Protavic are not a tribe of warriors, they cannot afford to earn the ire of yet another tribe. Give the deserters back to the clan that they came from.

The defectors could be paid for. By paying a ransom for each of the sealskins who wish to join them, the beast-bringers may be able to appease the leaders of the Toprocravic tribe.

Equality dropping seems to be a bad idea with our clan being diplomatically and materially disposed and having little military tradition. Especially with slaves and their possibilities of revolt.

I still say we co-opt another tribe like the Vuvovic to be a warrior caste for us if we get the opportunity. We can even pay them in slaves.

I agree on trying to have the Vuvovic become a warrior caste or something similar, so slavetrading is off the table. Trading our slaves should be reserved only for Vuvovic.

A deal is made with the Toprocravic. Whenever one of their tribe seeks to join to Protavic, the sealskins shall be compensated for their departure. It is difficult to judge the value of a free person but typically, the beast-bringers offer a handful of pigs and an abundance of honey in exchange for each emigrant. This price is paid often enough that it has a significant impact on our tribe – but not so significant that the people have any difficulty surviving.

Unfortunately, this deal makes life among the beast-bringers seem less appealing to prospective emigrants. It bolsters the wealth of the Toprocravic, while the prosperity of the Protavic is diminished. Nevertheless, there are still plenty of sealskins who wish to abandon their tribe in favour of ours, and they bring their understanding of boats and fishing along with them.

A generation passes.

The Toprocravic emigrants remain a hot topic, for they bring their old ways with them. They prove their martial prowess to each other with seal-clubbing competitions, they pass on important lessons to future generations by carving pictograms into the bones of beasts, and they revere the great lake of Croglatol as the source of all life.

There are some among the Protavic who are intrigued by the culture of the sealskin emigrants, but there are far more who disapprove of their ways. If they are to become a part of the tribe, they should abandon their old ways and become beast-bringers, through and through. They believe it is wrong of these outsiders to glut themselves on the wealth of the tribe, while refusing to adopt its ways.

They could be assimilated. Like the Pragradravic who came before them, these emigrants must abandon their old ways. If they want to live among the Protavic, they must become Protavic.

They could be isolated. If they want to cling their old culture, so be it, but they will have to live apart from the rest of the tribe. That way, they will not be able to contaminate the rest of the clan with their peculiar ways.

Their culture could be accepted. Some of the traditionalists might be upset, but these emigrants should be allowed to remain true to themselves without suffering any repercussions.

Their culture could be integrated. There is obvious value in the ways of the Toprocravic. Their culture shall be incorporated into Protavic society and a new people shall be born from this fusion.

We never asked them to come here and we even paid for them to stay here. So they should assimilate to our ways or fuck off. It’s time we start using these sealskins to build us new rowboats, we will need that to trade with tribes that are further away from us.
>>
>>5701238
>Assimilate them.

As with the Pragradravic and their hut-building, acquired technology isn't lost upon assimilation. The Protavic will retain the understanding of boat-making learned from Toprocravic emigrants. It is their cultural practices - such as seal-clubbing competitions, pedagogic scrimshaw and lake worship - that will be lost. I just thought that I should clarify this.

The bees of a hive serve their queen dutifully and without question – there is no room for deviation or individuality. The beast-bringers observe this lesson and apply it to their society by punishing those who celebrate any culture other than Protavic culture. This is usually accomplished by shunning but in the most extreme cases, the practice of seal-clubbing for sport or possession of scrimshaw is punishable by confiscation of property.

This crackdown on Toprocravic culture quickly snuffs out any deviant behaviour that the emigrants bring with them. Within a couple of years of their arrival, most newcomers renounce their old ways. Only the most diehard sealskins cling to the prior customs and practice them in private. The majority of the Protavic people are pleased with this development. In fact, it becomes common for outsiders to be viewed with contempt and seen as inferior. Of course the beast-bringers will smile and offer them gifts and barter with them, but it's all a ruse, a way of keeping the lesser tribes docile.

A generation passes.

Reeds taken from the shore of the Croglatol have been an important part of Protavic craftsmanship since the tribe's inception. Not only do they make an ideal roofing material, but they are used for making clothes, nets, ropes and many other items – until now. It has been found that by stripping away the stems of certain plants, slender yet durable fibres can be extracted from them.

>The civilisation gets +0.05 Technology.

Though reeds are still used for roofing, these newly discovered bast fibres replace them in almost every other field. However, there is one particular use for this revolutionary material that the Protavic people will focus on, more than any other.

They could focus on making bows. This weapon has only just been invented with the discovery of this fibre. At this point, they are ineffective and only used for hunting small animals. But if the Protavic develop a strong interest in archery, they could turn it into the deadliest weapon of the era.

They could focus on making clothes. Garments made out of pigskin, fur and woven reeds are quickly being phased out in favour of fabric made out of this fibre, but the Protavic could take it to the next level. By developing more sophisticated methods of spinning thread from fibres, they could make truly marvellous clothes.

They could focus on making ropes and nets. Already, the use of bast fibre instead of reeds is producing far stronger ropes and nets, but the Protavic could develop superior techniques. This would lead to far more durable tools that could be used for all sorts of applications and greatly enhance the efficiency of most workers.

This is a tough one. It’s either bow or fiber.

Choosing bow would increase security and safety; choosing ropes and nets can give us higher prosperity as we might increase our fishing yield for example. Hmmm.

>Make better bows

Ranged weapons can give us a tactical advantage in war and I think it’s something we lack very much. We can’t just keep relying on blood-drinkers and sealskin for battle.

Furthermore, like >>5701521 stated, we can use bows to hunt animals in the land which is good in the long run. Eventually, we will need to expand to the forest, we can’t just stick to the lake.

>The civilisation gets +0.1 Militarism.

The discovery of the bow seems to awaken the martial spirit of the Protavic people. The bows that they produce are works of art, hewn from the boughs of hardwood trees and given a beeswax finish. This wax is also applied to the masterfully coiled bowstrings, in order to prevent them from fraying and protect them from water damage. As for the arrows, they are fletched with duck feathers and given heads made out of wickedly sharp flint.

These weapons become the preferred tools of swineherds, who no longer have to scare away wolves and other predators by yelling at them and waving big sticks in their direction. Instead, they can now slay these pests from afar. In fact, the hunting of dangerous beasts becomes something of a popular sport and the most talented archers tend to accumulate impressive collections of wolf pelts.

Some of the traditionalists frown upon this practice and compare it to the Toprocravic custom of hoarding sealskins. In their eyes, a Protavil's worth can only be judged by their ability to play blocrum and solve riddles. Their strength lies in their intelligence after all, not in their martial prowess.

A generation passes.

The past few decades have been uneventful. In fact, the past few centuries have been rather unexciting. The Protavic people have been free to enjoy their prosperity without needing to worry about any hostile neighbours or the prospect of conflict.

That comes to an end when a messenger from the Vuvovic tribe arrives with grave news. Their people have been clashing with the Bruslavic for some time now, slaying their warriors and using their blood for their rites. For the most part, the violence has been limited to minor skirmishes, but that changed when the Glachovic got involved. While the blood-drinkers were occupied with these little spats, the far-reaching tribe launched a full-scale assault on their territory and stole it from them.

The now homeless Vuvovic linger by the forest's edge and wait to the opportunity to reclaim their land, but they cannot fight both the Bruslavic and the Glachovic. That's why they would like the Protavic to get involved, but are the beast-bringers willing?

They could leave the blood-drinkers to their fate. Our tribe will loss nothing, but one of its potential allies may be wiped out. It would be a shame, considering great Glavolan's bond with the Vuvovic.

They could seize the lands of the Bruslavic. As the other two tribes are occupied with the blood-drinkers, this would be the perfect opportunity for our clan to claim the singers' territory.

They could aid the blood-drinkers. The Vuvovic are one of the two tribes on good terms with the Protavic, they cannot be allowed to fade away. The beast-bringers shall coordinate with them and aid them.

Entering a Special Situation: The Vuvovic Plight.

As the conclave of the families listen to the messenger's tale, the leaders of the Protavic people are unanimous in their decision – they shall answer the call of the blood-drinkers. After sampling a few cups of butol and reading the essence that swims in the honey water, the tribe's holy women concur. The Vuvovic must be rescued from the brink of annihilation – it is the will of An.

Before the Protavic can take action however, more information is required. They need to know what sort of numbers they will be going up against.

According to the messenger, the majority of the Vuvovic's warriors were able to flee into the wilderness but the force that they left behind to guard their territory was annihilated. That leaves roughly a hundred and forty blood-drinkers willing and able to fight, though if they linger in the forest for too long, they will start to succumb to predators, disease and the elements.

The courier also has a good idea of the Bruslavic forces. They outnumbered the Vuvovic to begin with, but their warriors are weak and feeble. He reckons that roughly a quarter of them had been slain and drained of their blood by the point that the Glachovic got involved. By his estimate, that would leave the singers with roughly a hundred and fifty fighting men and women left.

Finally, there are the Glachovic, the far-reaching tribe. The messenger doesn't know much about them, all he can say is that they fought with a new sort of throwing stick, which uses a string to launch feathered spears over great distances – it seems as though they use bows and arrows as well. If he has to guess, there must be over two hundred of them, not counting any that they had left behind to guard their own territory.

With three hundred men and women who are able to fight, the Protavic should be able to even the odds – but what of the Toprocravic? Victory would be far more likely with the aid of the sealskins, but they have never been fond of the blood-drinkers. The beast-bringers shall have to offer them a great deal in order to earn their assistance.

Our tribe could fight without the help of the sealskins. It is likely that the Protavic and Vuvovic shall win without the aid of the lake-worshippers. There is no need to waste resources getting them involved.

Our tribe could offer the Toprocravic even more tribute. In order to satisfy them, the beast-bringers will probably have to send the sealskins the majority of their livestock. For the first time in centuries, the Protavic may experience hardship.

Our tribe could let them take both captives and territory. The sealskins may choose either the Bruslavic or the Glachovic. They will receive all of the land and civilians of the chosen tribe, in exchange for their aid in battle.

Another very difficult decision. The only decent options are not asking for sealskins aid or giving them captives and territory.

I feel if like we choose the latter, I don’t see what all we gain from the victory. Will we get the land and captives from the tribe that wasn’t chosen by sealskins? What spoils of war would vuvovic get? Are they just happy if they get their lands back and some captives so they can suck their blood?

Let their payment be whatever slaves, women, and riches they take during their raid on a lightly defended territory, and let the news of their lands under attack possibly split the Glachovic forces, or demoralize them.

It is decided. A messenger shall be sent to the Toprocravic to inform them of the far-reaching tribe's current vulnerability. They shall be encouraged to raid the Glachovic while their warriors are elsewhere and our tribe will promise that they shall face no retribution, for the long-arms shall soon fall.

There are a few flaws with this plan. One, no one has any no idea how many warriors the Glachovic have kept behind to defend their territory. Two, it will take time for news of the raid to reach the far-reaching warriors and for them to deploy. The more time it takes, the more attrition the Vuvovic will suffer. Three, there is no guarantee that the sealskins will actually agree to this plan.

Despite these issues, it is still a sound plan. Provided that the Toprocravic go through with this raid, the forces of the long-arms and the singers should be thrown into disarray and victory should be assured. The next question is possibly the most important one – who should attack where?

Maybe both tribes could attack the Bruslavic first. The singers are by far the weaker of the two tribes and even if they have some Glachovic support, they're not prepared for the Protavic to involve themselves in this battle. It will be an effortless victory.

Perhaps the Protavic could attack the Bruslavic while the Vuvovic reclaim their territory. With the Glachovic distracted, the Vuvovic stand a better chance to taking their land back. As for our tribe, it should be able to defeat the singers with ease.

Alternatively, both tribes could reclaim Vuvovic territory first. Returning the land of the blood-drinkers to its rightful owners should be our tribe's primary concern. Our tribe should be able to launch an amphibious assault via canoe.

Maybe the Vuvovic could attack the Bruslavic while the Protavic reclaim their territory. The singers are the weaker prey – the battered blood-drinker forces should be able to handle them. Our tribe can reach their territory by boat and reclaim it.

>Both tribes should attack the Bruslavic first.
>The Protavic should attack the Bruslavic while the Vuvovic reclaim their territory.
>Both tribes should reclaim Vuvovic territory first.
>The Vuvovic should attack the Bruslavic while the Protavic reclaim their territory.

Additionally, there is the matter of defending Protavic land from any retaliatory attacks. While our tribe's involvement in this war is not expected, it is possible that the enemy may choose to attack the territory of the beast-bringers rather than engage their warriors directly. Some of the family leaders think it would be unwise to leave their land undefended, while others believe it would be foolish to cripple their offensive by being overly cautious.

>Both tribes should attack the Bruslavic first.

Wiping them out should be the main focus. It was blood-drinkers and singers who initially fought the war; the hunters joined the war later on.

Once we crush the singers, the hunters might end up signing a peace treaty with us and they would give out their land and goods as compensation. I think that’s a possibility.

>Leave a hundred warriors behind.
If in case raiders come or slaves wanted to revolt, they would have no chance of beating 100 warriors. Furthermore, if hunters send an assault on us, they’re success won’t be that high.
>>
>>5702922
We just need to make sure the hunters understand that if they fought us they would lose.

Even though sealskins didn’t confirm with us if they would join the attack or not, if we can convince the hunters that the sealskins *will* come and attack their land AND they would get attacked by us and blood-drinkers, I think they would surrender and forfeit some of their land because no one wants to get wiped out.

Again I could be wrong, maybe these hunters are crazy enough to fight to the death. If that’s the case, then a lot of our warriors will die. That would suck.

Oblique order of battle, concentrate overwhelming force on the weakest point. This serves two purposes for us, it will hopefully draw the Glachovic farther away from their territory to defend their Allies, and two it leaves us closer to our own territory in case of surprise attack.

>Leave 50 warriors behind

That already leaves us barely outnumbering both tribes, and a surprise attack through the woods from the enemy is possible, but unlikely since our involvement isn’t known yet. The Glachovic are no joke and I’d really rather not leave more warriors than 50 behind against their tribe.
>>
>>5702799

>Both tribes should attack the Bruslavic first.
>Leave a hundred and fifty warriors behind.

The Vuvovic should be able to defeat the Bruslavic with only minor help, we need those warriors in Protavoc territory to protect our people in a worst case scenario.

The Glachovoc might have struck a dirty deal with the Toprocravic to co-raid our lands for being too friendly with the blood-drinkers.
Or the Toprocarvic might turn on us thinking we're in a weak situation by sending all our warriors away.
>>
>>5702799
>Both tribes should attack the Bruslavic first.

>Leave a hundred warriors behind.
>>
The leaders of the Protavic families can agree on one thing – their warriors and the Vuvovic will band together and push into Bruslavic territory. Their allies are likely too occupied with maintaining control of blood-drinker territory to assist them, which should allow your combined forces to roll over the singers. Once they have been put in their place, the combined forces of our tribe and the Vuvovic should be able to retake any lost territory and perhaps even put the hunters of the Glachovic in their place.

There is some debate over how many warriors should be left behind. In the end, the heads of the families settle on a compromise – seventy-five warriors shall remain behind to defend Protavic territory. That should be enough to handle any revolting slaves, thieving Grovic or opportunistic raiders from other tribes.

There is one last issue that remains – what will the beast-bringers gain from aiding the Vuvovic in this endeavour?

The messenger from the blood-drinkers doesn't expect our tribe to throw their lot in with them without a reward. He comes with an offer from the leaders of his clan – once the Bruslavic have been defeated and their warriors have been drained of their blood, their territory and its inhabitants shall be given to the Protavic. Our tribe shall be free to absorb the singers in their entirety.

While the leaders of the beast-bringers are pondering this offer and considering alternatives, one of them makes a rather bold suggestion. He is Pradrol of the Dropac, a clever young man with a glorious golden beard and skin as blue as the lake's water, and his suggestion is that the Vuvovic should join the Protavic. Before the messenger can express his distaste, Pradrol continues – the blood-drinkers shall be given a place of honour in the tribe. They shall not be expected to work but instead, they shall be free to devote their lives to battle, as the dedicated warriors of the tribe.

This suggestion leads to a great deal of murmuring and debate.

Our tribe could deny any reward. Any territory taken should be given to the Vuvovic. They will grow stronger, as will the Protavic's bond with them.

Our tribe could agree to absorb the Bruslavic. This is what was offered. It would be wrong of the Protavic to seek more than that.

Our tribe could ask for the enemy to be spared. The status quo must be maintained. Once this conflict is over, tribal borders must remain the same.

Our tribe could seek to absorb both enemy tribes. This is a little ambitious and would leave the Vuvovic as an enclave within our territory.

Our tribe could suggest that the Vuvovic join our tribe. This would undoubtedly lead to significant upheaval, but the potential benefits are massive.

They belong with us, we've specced into wealthy diplomats, we have had good relations with them in the past, we need them and they need us.

I honestly think this is the way to go, because lets be honest, I doubt we're stopping until we've assimilated the entire lake, including the far shore, and the Vuvovic with us from the start would be an enormous help, as well as freeing us to continue to do what we do best, gathering rich herds, tending to the Brubol hives, and honing our knowledge and craftsmanship.

Think to yourselves, what would Glavolan have done?

Let's push all the way to the east, and absorb the territories of the Bruslavic, Vuvovic, and the Glachovic.

The blood-drinkers will be promised the blood of any male warriors slain or captured in this conflict, on the condition that the female warriors will be spared. Since that is the will of An the allmother.

In addition to the blood-drinkers becoming our warrior class, we should give them some kind of law-enforcing/police privilege too. They should get the right to duel any person accused of crime so they have a steady supply of blood aquired by combat.

Leave blood-drinkers as they are for now - if we create special warrior caste out of them it will only lead to trouble down the road. Also can we sell most of Bruslavic as slaves and trade around for other slaves from around the lake? I don't want to take unity hits from trying to integrate coherent cultural group.

The issue is hotly debate but in the end, it is decided that the Vuvovic should join the Protavic as honoured warriors once their territory has been retaken and their enemies punished for their hubris. The messenger cannot promise that the leaders of the blood-drinkers shall agree to this proposal – all he can do is seek them out and let them know our tribe's decision. After he has had his fill of Protavic fine dining, the messenger is sent on his way.

The beast-bringers send a courier of their own to the Toprocravic. He shall tell the sealskins of the current state of affairs – how the Glachovic have left their own territory undefended in an effort to wipe out the blood-drinkers. The vulnerability of the hunters is exaggerated and it is suggested that the Toprocravic should raid them while they are weak. As for our tribe, they shall wait a fortnight for the sealskins to carry out this raid and for the Glachovic to react to it. With any luck, they shall redeploy their warriors closer to home and leave the singers vulnerable.

A fortnight passes and the time comes.

Almost two hundred and thirty beast-bringers gather on the eastern border, many of whom have become skilled marksmen after years of guarding their herds. As our warriors swarm into Bruslavic territory, the Vuvovic emerge from the forest to join them – just a little over a hundred and thirty of them in total. Several of the blood-drinkers must have succumbed to the forest during the wait, but they had no choice in the matter. If the enemy saw them pass into Protavic territory, they would have realised the nature of our tribe's alliance with them.

As the combined forces of the blood-drinkers and the beast-bringers sweep across the land of the singers, they meet little resistance – until they come across the central settlement at the heart of their territory. News of the assault must have reached the village, for the Bruslavic have amassed a force of over two hundred warriors to fight off the invasion. Most of them appear rather pitiful – they are clad in simple clothes and armed with primitive cudgels and slings – yet a quarter of their number appear quite fearsome. These brutes are clad in heavy wolfskins and bearskins and they wield bows and spears that are as long as they are tall. They must be a small contingent of the Glachovic, left behind to defend the singers.

But no matter how impressive they appear, the enemy are outnumbered almost two to one. Surely our tribe's victory is assured.

>The Protavic and their allies win against the Bruslavic and their allies by a difference of 16 – they achieve a Close Victory.

>The civilisation gets -12 Population and Fighting Population.
>The civilisation gets -21 Fighting Population until the end of the Special Situation.

The Bruslavic fight like cornered rats, with unusual savagery for such a peaceful tribe. As for the Glachovic, their spears and arrows are responsible for the majority of our tribe's losses. Fortunately, the combined force of the blood-drinkers and the beast-bringers give as good as they get – and the enemy have far less warriors to spare. The tide turns when the hunters, down a third of their men, flee from the battlefield. The remaining Bruslavic are battered into submission and soon surrender.

After the battle, nine of the Protavic are found dead, while twenty-one of them are wounded. The Vuvovic have lost eight warriors and have seventeen suffer from grievous injuries. Though only nine of the singers died in battle, over thirty of them are severely wounded, while the Glachovic have lost seven huntsmen and have left seven of their wounded behind. Anyone not accounted for is assumed to have deserted, to have fled into the forest to join the Grovic or be eaten by bears.

With the battle out of the way and the Bruslavic defeated, the leaders of the blood-singers seek an audience with the heads of the Protavic families. The one who speaks for them is Drovul Bal, a gnarled old warrior covered with both battle scars and ritual scarification. Regarding the proposal of the blood-singers joining our tribe, he says that they are still considering it – that the beast-bringers will need to prove that they deserve the might of the Vuvovic.

To begin with, Drovul Bal wants to execute all of the remaining Bruslavic warriors – over a hundred in total – so that the Vuvovic may drink their blood and their strength. Pradrol is eager to agree to this, but some of the other leaders aren't so certain. Dopran of the Ropac, a keen-eyed woman famed for her skill as an archer and a player of blocrum, suggests conscripting them instead. After all, a hundred more soldiers would come in useful against the Glachovic.

Our tribe could allow the execution of the singers. Over a hundred warriors would be consigned to death for the sake of this grisly ritual.

Our tribe could let them kill the men but spare the women. Roughly half of the Bruslavic warriors are female – slaying them would be a godless act.

Our tribe could spare them all but do not let them fight. It would be wrong to kill them all, but it's too soon for trust any of them as fighters.

Our tribe could conscript them and make them fight. With almost twenty dead and almost forty out of action, the allied forces could do with a boost.

The ways of the Protavic are explained to Drovul Bal and the other Vuvovic leaders – the importance of essence, the vital role that women play in the creation of life and the world's true nature as An, the Allmother. Though there is some confusion to start with, eventually they come to understand our tribe's beliefs. In return, they share their teachings.

In their eyes, all of humanity is descended from Gladravil and Gladrabran, the Great Father and the Great Mother respectively. The sons of the Great Father grew envious as they grew older and one night, when Gladravil was sleeping, they slit his throat and drank his blood so that they may gain his strength. When Gladrabran discovered the death of her lover, she cast out all of her children – not just the sons, but the daughters too. Humanity was thrown out of paradise and must now survive on this harsh world until they earn the Great Mother's forgiveness.

According to the teachings of the blood-drinkers, all men have inherited a portion of Gladravil's might. By defeating the other sons of the Great Father in battle and drinking their blood, the Vuvovic believe that they are stealing back the strength of their progenitor and hope that one day, they may grow strong enough to return to paradise and beg for Gladrabran's forgiveness.

However, their faith has no explanation for female warriors, like those among the Bruslavic and the Protavic. Perhaps these women harbour the tiniest sliver of Gladravil's essence, or so they have told themselves until now. Now that they know of our tribe's beliefs, they are not so certain – but rather than worry too much about it, they agree to spare the women for now. Some of the Vuvovic leaders are disappointed, but at least they're still allowed to bleed the men dry.

The singers are horrified by the morbid ritual. The women and children shriek and wail throughout the rite and even some of the Protavic turn their backs on the display in disgust. By the time the Vuvovic are finished, dozens of men have been slain and drained of their delicious brown blood. As displeased as the Bruslavic are, it's not like they have any choice but to accept their fate – the Glachovic have abandoned them and they have no chance of fighting back now.

The beast-bringers and blood-drinkers take a day to rest and recover in Bruslavic territory before they move south-east, to retake the Vuvovic lands.

Meanwhile, far away in the west, the warriors left behind to defend the Protavic homeland witness a raiding party cross the border – thirty of the long-armed hunters who fled from battle and left their singer allies behind to be conquered. They're not there to steal anything – just to cause as much damage as possible. They need to be stopped.

>The Protavic win against the Glachovic by a difference of 44 – they achieve a Decisive Victory.

>The civilisation gets -1 Population and Fighting Population.
>The civilisation gets -4 Fighting Population until the end of the Special Situation.

This land has belonged to the Protavic for generations and these warriors aren't about to let the Glachovic ruin it. The hunters only manage to burn down a couple of huts and slaughter a dozen livestock before the defensive force that our tribe left behind arrives. A clever young man known as Virol of the Bupac leads the beast-bringers to success – he uses the superior numbers of the Protavic and their familiarity with the land to encircle the pillagers and fill them with arrows.

By the time that they are done, only seven of the Glachovic manage to escape by forcing their way past their assailants and rushing off into the wilderness. Ten of them lie dead while thirteen lie wounded. As for the Protavic losses, the beast-bringers only lost a single warrior, though four of them are severely injured. Overall, the defence was a resounding success.

Unaware of this attack, the combined might of the Vuvovic and Protavic tribes move on to reclaim the territory of the blood-drinkers, only to find that it is completely unoccupied.

When the women of the Vuvovic are questioned, they explain that the Glachovic have left. At the crack of dawn, they just gathered their forces and departed for the east, where their homeland lies. The hunters must have been informed about the attack on the Bruslavic and decided that it was better to consolidate their forces in their own territory than allow themselves to be stretched thin.

Drovul Bal and the other Vuvovic leaders are eager to bring the fight to the Glachovic, not necessarily out a desire for vengeance but out of admiration for their strength – they wish to steal their power through their blood-drinking rites and grow stronger. Some of the Protavic leaders are not so sure. In fact, a couple of them are calling for an end to this war here and now.

Right now, the Protavic have almost two hundred warriors standing ready, while the Vuvovic have a little over a hundred. As for the Glachovic, they only lost around fifteen during the battle for the singers. Based on what our tribe's leaders know, this means that they must still have at least a hundred and eighty fighters left. In fact, they almost certainly have more, it just on how many defenders the hunters had left behind to defend their territory in the first place.

The Protavic could join the blood-drinkers and attack the Glachovic. This will satisfy the bloodlust of the Vuvovic, but the battle may prove costly.

The Protavic could bring an end to the violence. Even if victory is possible, too many lives would be lost trying to achieve it. The Vuvovic won't be happy.

>They must be a small contingent of the Glachovic, left behind to defend the singers.

I believe it did work, which is why only a small contingent of Glachovic were with the Braslovic when we attacked them.

Now I have a bad feeling the Toprocrovic encountered a lot more Glachovic than we told them they would and took heavy losses, and they're going to be fucking pissed at us. But one thing at a time eh?
>>
>>5704885
The Toprocravic were not invited to join the war. It was merely suggested that they should raid the Glachovic while they were distracted with the Vuvovic. With no formal agreement between the tribes, I saw no reason to give a response from them. Time will tell whether the Toprocravic carried out this raid or not, and what impact it had if they did.

It is decided – the beast-bringers and blood-drinkers shall fight side by side against the Glachovic. No matter the odds, they shall fight together and perhaps even die together. Three hundred warriors spend a day resting and gathering their strength before they move out. They travel further east along the shore of the Croglatol and in the distance, they can see the Sharoc peek over the horizon – the ominous mountain range that serves as the eastern border of Grascan.

The combined forces of the Protavic and Vuvovic tribes arrive at the Glachovic settlement. Their territory already shows some signs of battle, from the burned-out husks of huts to patches of disturbed earth where the dead are likely buried. The women and children of the long-armed tribe do not seem very surprised by the arrival of our warriors – if anything, it seems like they expected it. Indeed, when the enemy force are spotted, they are all too ready for battle.

There are well over two hundred of them. While they are outnumbered by the blood-drinkers and beast-bringers, they are well-armed with their long spears and longbows and many of them are clad with the furs of the wolves and bears that they have slain. They are burly, battle-hardened and fighting to defend their home from invaders – it is clear that the Glachovic aren't going to go down without offering one hell of a fight.

>The Protavic and their allies win against the Glachovic by a difference of 6 – they achieve a Costly Victory.

>The civilisation gets -21 Population and Fighting Population.
>The civilisation gets -39 Fighting Population until the end of the Special Situation.

As expected, the battle is a bloody one. For every one of the Glachovic that falls, he brings one of the invaders down with him. The brawling goes on for well over an hour as many of the hunters opt to fight to the death rather than surrender their home. They only give up the fight when over eighty of them lie battered and broken on the ground but even then, they would rather flee than surrender like the Bruslavic did. The hunters scatter and make their way south and east, towards the winding river that leads down from the Sharoc.

Sixteen of the Protavic have fallen this day, and almost forty lie wounded. Roughly twenty of the Vuvovic are too injured to carry on fighting, while eleven of them lie dead. As always, there are a few warriors who are unaccounted for, who must have ran off into the wilderness during the fighting. Perhaps they believed that they had a better chance of surviving in the forest than in battle against the Glachovic, over twenty of whom are wounded and sixty of whom are dead.

Drovul Bal and the blood-drinkers seem satisfied with this victory. Rather than give chase, they seem more than happy to glut themselves on the blood of the wounded and the dead. In a show of solidarity that shocks some of the Protavic, Grislal of the Topac joins them in their gruesome ritual. The stern old warrior draws the syrupy brown blood from a hunter's carcass and heats it over a fire before he drinks it, in a manner that earns much cheering from the Vuvovic.

Once he has gotten their attention, Grislal suggests that the surviving Glachovic hunters should be brought down before they are able to cross the river. By his estimate, there might be as many as a hundred and fifty of them left – enough that they would be able to cause a lot of trouble if they joined the Grovic. Worse still, they might join another tribe and cause it to become predisposed against the Protavic. With a little over two hundred able-bodied warriors left, he believes that the beast-bringers and blood-drinkers might be able to take them on, but only if they fight them together.

Our tribe could give chase and hunt down the Glachovic. They can't be allowed to cause any more trouble. More lives may be lost, but it will mean less hassle the Protavic in the future.

Our tribe could allow the Glachovic to flee across the river. They will live to fight another day, either as Grovic brigands or as the warriors of another tribe, but too many of the Protavic have died already. Stopping them wouldn't be worth it.

Dude, the raiding party was defeated and the grovic are small in number and weak to try anything since we got the bows.
>>
>>5704956
>Give chase and hunt down the Glachovic.

I think potential benefits outweigh the downsides. We have our forces concentrated, something that only happens during special events like war, it isn't something we can do willy-nilly. We have an opportunity to strongly reduce or eliminate a dangerous threat that has superior technology and martial culture to us. We get to demonstrate our "worthiness" even further to the Vuvovic just in case our earlier compromise wasn't enough. And we potentially prevent the Glachovic from swaying another tribe against us resulting in another war in the near future that could further reduce our numbers, while I'm relatively confident in victory owing to our alliance with the Vuvovic and high numbers, war is always a risk. Even if they do escape and sway another tribe against us or we end up violating another tribe's territory during the pursuit, we at least reduce the numbers that could assimilate into another tribe.

In general I think it is worth pursuing wars to their furthest conclusion usually, at least when we have the advantage of numbers through our alliances like previously, it's a waste of the opportunity otherwise. Though the Vuvovic are satisfied in this case, I'd prefer to avoid cases like the Bruslavic being dissatisfied with our alliance like before, though in that particular case it worked out because it weakened them and provided a path of expansion through this war.
>>
>>5704956
>Give chase and hunt down the Glachovic.
>>
The leaders of the tribe eventually conclude that the Glachovic must be brought down, before they can join the Grovic or another tribe. Even though more warriors may die, it is a price that is worth paying in order to bring an end to this problem once and for all. As soon as the Vuvovic are finished with their grim rite, those who are still able to fight gather their strength and give chase.

Grislal's estimate was close to the mark – there are roughly a hundred and forty of the Glachovic found in the far corner of their territory, where the river meets the lake. The water is too deep and flows too quickly for them to safely wade or even swim across, not without being swept out into the depths of the Croglatol. For this reason, they are already hard at work lashing together rafts so that they may safely cross the river and reach the other side.

Unfortunately, their work is interrupted by the arrival of the beast-bringers and blood-drinkers. Yet again, the combined forces of the two tribes have the hunters outnumbered and this time, they're cornered too. They cannot retreat from here. They must choose between falling in battle, throwing themselves into the water and surrendering – and surrendering to the Vuvovic is a death sentence. They know that if they lose, none of them will survive, so they pick up their bows and ready themselves for battle, steeled by the knowledge that they are already dead. All the Glachovic hope for is the chance to slay as many foes as they can before they fall.

>The Protavic and their allies lose against the Glachovic by a difference of 11 – they suffer a Narrow Defeat.

>The civilisation gets -41 Population and Fighting Population.

Despite being outnumbered, the Glachovic fight with inhuman ferocity. For every one of theirs that falls, they bring down at least two of the Protavic and Vuvovic. Fearing death at the hands of the enemy, many of the allied warriors choose to run rather than lose their lives to the spears and arrows of the huntsmen. Even the bravest fighters are forced to follow suit as they lose the numerical advantage, leaving their dead and wounded behind and allowing the Glachovic to recuperate.

Fearing that the failed assault might have emboldened the hunters, the allied warriors soon regroup and steel themselves for a counterattack at the edge of the Glachovic settlement – yet it never comes, not even after several hours of waiting. Eventually they gather the courage to venture forth and meet the hunters in battle once more, only to find that they have fled across the river on the rafts that they were assembling. Any wounded beast-bringers and blood-drinkers who were left behind during the retreat have been executed.

Almost forty of the Protavic lie dead and over twenty of the Vuvovic have been slain. As for the Glachovic, fifteen of their dead litter the battlefield – they must have fled with their wounded. However, no matter how much this defeat might sting, this war was a successful one. The territory and non-combatants of the singers and the hunters have been captured and the blood-drinkers have reclaimed their home. Not only that, but Drovul Bal and the other Vuvovic have been suitably impressed – they are willing to join the Protavic as an honoured caste of warriors.

There are several decisions that must be made. First of all, the Protavic must decide what should be done with the Bruslavic and Glochavic captives.

They could be assimilated. So far, this has been the preferred way of the Protavic people. After several generations, the population of the integrated tribe will identify solely as beast-bringers.

They could be accepted. The integrated tribe will be allowed to retain its customs and its beliefs, for good or ill. Over time, these practices may influence the rest of the Protavic people.

They could be enslaved. The captured tribe will be kept as slaves, used to perform all of the backbreaking work that the beast-bringers find distasteful, though they may come to resent their masters.

They could be cast out. The tribe will be forced to vacate their territory and flee into the forest. While our tribe will have less able bodies, it will also have less mouths to feed and more land for pastures.
>>
The Bruslavic are a rather peaceful people, who have developed a sophisticated culture over the centuries. They use long, droning songs in order to record their history and to pass on the knowledge of their forebears. Some of these songs are simply stories or myths, while others are surprisingly technical and pass on practical knowledge regarding construction, toolmaking and other arts. As for their beliefs, like the Protavic, the singers believe that all living things harbour supernatural power – but they believe in countless animistic spirits, rather than a single universal essence. Each of these spirits is revered in a different way, in order to avoid angering it.

There are roughly four hundred and ten Bruslavic whose fates we must decide.

>Assimilate the Bruslavic.
>Accept the Bruslavic.
>Enslave the Bruslavic.
>Cast out the Bruslavic.

On the other hand, the Glachovic revolve around violence, though it is usually against beasts rather than men. The women, children and men who were too old to fight were charged with farming by the lakeside, while the lives of men revolved around hunting the beasts of Grascan. Whenever they weren't stalking the undergrowth in search of boars, bears and wolves, they were creating mighty weapons that they might hunt with and creating clothes and trophies out of the animals that they had slain. Theirs is a martial culture that has eschewed religion in favour of the hunt – they truly care about little else.

There roughly three hundred and thirty Glachovic whose fates we must decide.

>Assimilate the Glachovic.
>Accept the Glachovic.
>Enslave the Glachovic.
>Cast out the Glachovic.
>>
>>5705550
>Assimilate the Bruslavic.
They are simialr enough to us to be brought into the fold over time.

>Enslave the Glachovic.
As a martial people, they will not accept the ideas of our tribe and will resist integration. They will already resent us - we would be better off putting them in a weak position.

Obediant slaves who impress the tribe may be granted freedom in time.

Also, creating a common slave underclass will make the Bruslavic (who number almost as many as us) feel superior and more accepted.
>>
>>5705550
>Assimilate the Bruslavic.
I think most of us can agree on this one, the Bruslavic are like us, and therefore can be assimilated with relatively little effort.

The Glachovic are harder...let us recall that they fought bravely, they did not seek us out as enemies, and are not to be hated. I think we should
>Assimilate the Glachovic
To accept them, or to enslave them would leave them intact as a catalyst in case the rest of the Glachovic warriors returned someday, if they were accepted, their loyalty might be swayed adn they may leave, if they were enslaved, they might form an uprising. Assimilated, they will simply be Protavic.

Let slavery not be the crutch of our people, but reserved only for the Grovic, out of hatred and disdain for the great enemy they once were.
>>
>>5705550
Ahh ffs we lost the skirmish. I knew this was going to be tough. Alas, we still got a lot out of this war in end so it’s all good.

>>5705551

>Assimilate the Bruslavic.

>>

>Assimilate the Bruslavic.
They number almost as much as our people, I fear the assimilation will not go as planned. I expect them to influence our people significantly before they're assimilated, but this seems beneficial considering the ways of their people

>Offer the Glachovic to join our caste of warriors, enslave those who are unsuitable or who refuse.
The Glachovic are warrior people by heart, this makes them good candidates to strengthen our new elite class of warriors. Those who are unsuitable due to age or physical condition should be enslaved. We can't simultaneously assimilate another group that big compared to our population, especially considering how much they differ from us.
>>
>>5705691
I should point out that all of the Glachovic warriors have either died in battle, been executed for blood-drinking purposes or fled across the river. Only the women, children and elderly are left, all of which would fall into the "unsuitable" category. Should I count your post as a vote in favour of enslaving the Glachovic?

Yes in favour of enslaving. I was hoping there were men who were temporarily ill, or children nearly old enough who could join the warriors.

The blood-drinkers only have male warriors, so no women can join them. According to their religious beliefs the men collect the blood to regain the strength of the Great Father (if correctly interpreted).

The Bruslavic and the Glachovic will abandon their old ways. They shall no longer teach their children through song, they shall challenge them to solve riddles and beat each other at games of Blocrum. They shall no longer fixate on the importance of the hunt, they shall exchange beasts and honey with each other, as is the Protavic way. No matter how many generations it takes, they shall all become beast-bringers.

With this decision, the tribe shall more than double in size, with obvious consequences. For the first time in their history, the Protavic people are a minority in their own tribe. Though the assimilated singers and hunters will eventually abandon their old identities, at this point in time, they have little love for their new tribe. The fact that they had to watch the Vuvovic slaughter and execute their fathers, brothers and sons doesn't help either. Time will tell how much trouble this choice will cause for our clan.

If there is one benefit, it is the knowledge that our tribe shall glean from its new members. The Bruslavic bring a primitive understanding of herbal medicine with them, while the Glachovic share the secret of treating animal skins in order to create the crudest form of leather. By incorporating these technologies and making good use of them, the Protavic shall be able to live happier, healthier lives.

Next, there is the issue of the Vuvovic.

Pradrol of the Dropac promised them a place of honour among the Protavic, as honoured warriors who will not have to work. Instead, they shall devote their lives to becoming the ideal warriors, so that they might defend the beast-bringers from harm and drink the blood of their enemies. However, not all of the Vuvovic are warriors. In fact, after all of the losses that they incurred, only eighty-five of the blood-drinkers can be considered warriors. The remaining three hundred and seventy are women, children and the elderly.

First of all, let us decide what shall be done with the Vuvovic civilians.

They could be accepted. The families of the Vuvovic warriors shall be treated as equals and free to pass to mingle with the Protavic. In time, perhaps their beliefs and customs shall be incorporated by the entire tribe.

They could be isolated. They should be kept separate from the rest of the tribe. Though they will be free to practice their old ways, they shall never infect the Protavic people with their peculiar beliefs.

They could be assimilated. Like the Bruslavic and the Glachovic, they shall have to abandon their old ways. Only the warriors of the Vuvovic are of any value to our tribe, though they may not like this decision.
>>
Second of all, let us decide what shall be done with the Vuvovic warriors.

They could serve the tribe as a warrior caste. They will maintain their own traditions and their own families. Only their descendants shall be allowed to become blood-drinking warriors, which will lead to the creation of a martial bloodline, a tribe within a tribe, with their needs provided for by the common Protavic. In exchange, they shall offer their protection.

They could transform into a martial order. Instead of only training their sons to become blood-drinkers, the Vuvovic shall adopt the strongest men among the Protavic. They shall not be defined by who their fathers were, but by their strength and their merit. However, this decision may upset Drovul Bal and the other Vuvovic. This is not what they agreed to.

They could be treated like the rest of their tribe. The leaders of the Protavic might have changed their mind – perhaps Pradrol was an idiot and this whole idea is stupid. Instead, the warriors of the Vuvovic should just be accepted, isolated or assimilated. Whatever fate awaits their women and children, they shall share it – but they will be outraged.

So, what will happen to the three hundred and seventy non-combatants?

>Accept the Vuvovic population.
>Isolate the Vuvovic population.
>Assimilate the Vuvovic population.

And what shall happen to the eighty-five Vuvovic warriors?

>The blood-drinkers shall serve the tribe as a warrior caste.
>The blood-drinkers shall transform into a martial order.
>The blood-drinkers shall be treated like the rest of their tribe.
>>
>>5705794
>Assimilate the Vuvovic population.

>The blood-drinkers shall serve the tribe as a warrior caste.
Let's leave the blood-drinking for the warriors, since they're the only ones worth the backlash for it and the remaining pop can assimilate without causing trouble to the others and most of our own.
>>
A shame that we lost the final skirmish, but we still weakened them and made them leave with wounded, which most won't survive the trip.
>>
>>5705794
>Accept the Vuvovic population.

We can find a way to make this work. Some explanation for female warriors and a deepening of the earlier conversation that took place when the Bruslavic were conquered can be had. Their beliefs are not wholly incompatible with ours.

>The blood-drinkers shall serve the tribe as a warrior caste.

This is fine. They will serve as our elite warrior caste, but we still have other fighters within our tribe. With our cohesion being dead in the middle it is probably best not to rock the boat.
>>
>>5705794
>Accept the Vuvovic population.
The Vuvovic have never been anything but allies to us, they deserve to keep their ways and stand at the side of the Protavic, they are part of us, but they've earned the right to stay themselves as well.
>The blood-drinkers shall transform into a martial order.
Let any who wish to join the Vuvovic be trained by them, but let itbe clear that they must adopt the ways of the Vuvovic, that they must drain the Drocrum straight from the vein. Explain to Drovul Bal that since he explained the Vuvovic religion there are others beside his clansmen who wish to grow the strength of Gladravil inside them, can he really deny their right to attempt and restore themselves to Gladrabran's paradise?
>>

We’ve lost a lot of equality points. I’m not entirely sure if this the best case. But at the same time… assimilating does have its advantage. You won’t have dissent. Man it’s tough honestly. Idk. I chose accept but not sure if I should change
>>
>>5706171
I see your point, if it weren’t for the blood-drinking I’d accept the vuvovic without a doubt.
>>
>>5706171
As a proponent of Accept, I’d say you shouldn’t change, we have to tread very carefully with our equality while we’re assimilating two separate tribes who each almost outnumber us and who both have strong reason to hate us.

Accept helps maintain the Vuvovic on good terms, doesn’t put even MORE stress on us trying to assimilate a THIRD tribe, and leaves them free to assist incase the Grachovic return.
>>
>>5706206
Yea I gotchu. I’ve been thinking… maybe we shouldn’t have assimilated the singers tribe? I feel like they’re the most compatible to us and their culture of passing on knowledge through songs is actually kinda useful. When we assimilated them, they kinda stopped doing that.

No regrets assimilating hunter tribe. Imma be honest, I’m not the biggest fan of blood-drinkers. I would much prefer if we made alliance with hunters than the blood-drinkers but sadly didn’t have the opportunity

The agreement with the Vuvovic shall be honoured. Their people shall be treated as the equals of the Protavic and welcomed among them without discrimination, while their warriors shall be elevated to a position of honour and allowed to devote their lives to matters of combat and warfare. Their sons shall inherit this privilege and create a noble caste that shall defend the Protavic forever more.

As time passes, the beast-bringers shall learn from the blood-drinkers as vice versa. The practices of ritual scarification and the drinking of blood shall spread throughout our tribe, which shall lead to the creation of a hardier and more martial people. However, the unfortunate truth is that these customs aren't very conducive to good health. The process of scarring oneself can often lead to unpleasant infections and the drinking of blood allows for the transmission of all sorts of diseases.

There are a few more issues. To start with, there is the fact that the new warrior caste shall not contribute anything to the tribe other than violence. Not only that but in order to keep these fighters at peak condition, they shall require the best food that the Protavic can offer. This means that the surplus of land and livestock that was previously being used to bolster the growth of the tribe's population is now being spent on keeping the Vuvovic warriors happy and healthy.

Second of all, the Protavic now make up less than a third of their own tribe. They are still the largest demographic in the clan, but they are significantly outnumbered by all of the other peoples that they have integrated. Not only will this make the process of assimilation slow and painful, but this will likely be the source of all sorts of issues further down the line – at least until the Protavic are able to become the majority once more.

Third of all, there are the Toprocravic. It turns out that they did raid the Glachovic while they were busy occupying the territory of the blood-drinkers – but the hunters did not leave themselves as vulnerable as our leaders had hoped. They had left behind a hundred warriors, not enough to stop the raiders from looting their land but enough to make the sealskins pay for everything they stole. As a result, the Toprocravic are not particularly pleased.

More importantly, they are rather intimidated by the fact that our tribe has suddenly tripled in size, after integrating three other clans and their territory. They bring a sudden end to the deal that allowed their tribesmen to emigrate to beast-bringer lands, which shall impact the growth of our tribe. But on the bright side, this means that the Protavic will no longer need to offer the Toprocravic so much tribute. In the end though, relations with the sealskins have changed from cordial to wary.

>The civilisation gets +10 Prosperity.
>The civilisation gets -0.5% Rate of Growth.

But at long last, this strife has come to an end and it is time for the Protavic to celebrate the deeds of one particular hero above all others – the one name that shall be remembered alongside Glavolan, the cunning woman responsible for our tribe's bond with the blood-drinkers in the first place.

They could honour Pradrol of the Dropac. He was the leader responsible for suggesting the incorporation of the Vuvovic as a warrior caste in the first place.

They could honour Dopran of the Ropac. She was the keen-eyed woman who brought down many Bruslavic and suggested the conscription of their warriors.

They could honour Virol of the Bupac. He was the young warrior responsible for leading the defence of the homeland when the Glachovic launched a counterattack.

They could honour Grislal of the Topac. He was the grim old warrior who took part in the blood-drinking rites and encouraged the tribe to hunt down the fleeing Glachovic.

They could honour Drovul Bal. He was the first among the Vuvovic leaders, who led the blood-drinking warriors to victory against the Bruslavic and Glachovic.

They could honour the Protavic people. A hive does not thrive because of the actions of any single bee, but because of its success as a collective. The tribe should honour itself.

Now that we are all under the same umbrella it only makes sense to honour ourselves as we all did our part in this victory and transformation.

Though honouring Pradol or Virol also makes sense to me, as the melding of our peoples is the biggest gain so far and the defence of our home was the most unambiguous clear win even for those who aren't happy with our choices of what to do with the tribes in the aftermath.

>The civilisation gets +5 Equality and Cohesion.

In the end, the leaders of the Protavic decide not to celebrate any single individual, but the entirety of the tribe instead. No single person contributed more than any other – everyone played their part, from the heads of the families who led the charge, to the common warriors who bled for their tribes, to the women who chose not to fight and remained at home, caring for the livestock and the land while the clan was at war.

Ending a Special Situation: The Vuvovic Plight.

A generation passes.

As the Toprocravic are the only other tribe that inhabits the northern shores of the Croglatol, a few enterprising tribesmen decide to climb into their canoes and venture south in search of new tribes to barter with. Along the southern shores of the lake, they find five new clans for the Protavic to barter with and exploit.

The Scagravic are a peculiar tribe that doesn't just live along the lakeside, but dwells in the forest as well. They make their homes in the towering blackwood trees, at such heights that they are apparently safe from predators. These tree-dwellers react to our tribe with great hostility, for some reason.
The Rodac are another tribe that doesn't just live by the shore of the Croglatol. The territory of the stone men includes the rocky slopes that lead up towards the Sharoc. Though this land can hardly be described as fertile, it is a source of shining stones that the Rodac use for their tools.
The Bodravic have managed to clear away a significant patch of the forest using fire. They have no need to squabble with their neighbouring tribes for territory when they can burn away the woodland instead. This has led to the wood-burners developing strange beliefs that revolve around fire.
The Drocravic revere the flames as well, but in a different way. They make a tradition out of cremating their dead and marking their bodies with burn scars. In the eyes of the light-bringers, fire is a holy and cleansing thing that defines mankind – to shun the flames is to shun one's humanity.
The Procruvic are the third tribe with a spiritual connection to fire, though they worship its by-product rather than the flames themselves. These smoke people burn the noxious herbs of Grascan and breathe in the fumes, so that they might experience the wisdom that is hidden in the smog.

But enough about these peculiar tribes. There are internal affairs that must be handled.
>>
Many of the adolescents of the conquered tribes have not embraced the Protavic way as readily as our clan hoped. In fact, many of them have chosen to run away and join the Grovic instead. Incidents of theft and kidnapping become more frequent as these scoundrels grow in numbers, leading to growing dissatisfaction throughout Protavic territory. There are even some fears that these Grovic bands are growing so organised and numerous that they could merge into a new tribe.

>The civilisation gets -0.5% Rate of Growth.
>The civilisation gets -10 Security and Happiness.

The law-abiding members of the tribe are appalled by this. In fact, many of them believe that these rowdy youths must have been encouraged to run away by their families, who must still harbour ill will towards the Protavic people. But no matter what the reason behind their rebellion is, something must be done about it.

Our tribe could punish the families of these runaways. Anyone who is believed to be connected to Grovic activity shall have their livestock and land confiscated, to be given to more loyal tribesmen.

Our tribe could redistribute wealth in favour of the conquered tribes. Perhaps if the conquered families need to be given an incentive before they will assimilate. Once they are comfortable, they will not rebel.

Our tribe could isolate offspring from their families. Once children reach a certain age, they must be taken from their families and taught the Protavic way of life by dedicated teachers. This might be costly.

Our tribe could send the Vuvovic to enslave the Grovic. The blood-drinkers need something to do while the tribe is at peace. They can round up these runaways and put them to work as slaves.

Fixing cohesion and equality and growth is probably more important than fixing our lost security and improving our prosperity via slaves. While I could see a happiness loss no matter what we choose, I think enslaving will lead to a equality penalty, punishment or isolation may lead to equality and cohesion penalties (but maybe fix our growth) whereas redistribution presumably is something the elder Protavic agree to do and thus won't damage cohesion. (At least as much)

To be fair, I expect that from a mechanical standpoint that hitting certain low thresholds on equality, cohesion, prosperity, or happiness have "resets" of sorts in the form of as you mentioned; civil wars or other similar special situations. I could see us having prehistoric proto-social wars like the Romans but earlier or other similar types of conflicts, with choices and outcomes that reset our stats to higher, no doubt at tremendous social cost elsewhere or at the cost of terrible bloodshed.

In the end, the leaders of the tribe decide to redistribute livestock and other goods for the benefit of the conquered peoples. The most successful Protavic families are forced to surrender some of their pigs and tools so that they might be given to the Bruslavic and Glachovic instead. Proponents of this policy argue that the conquered tribes deserve this – they didn't just lose their warriors during the war, but a significant number of their able-bodied workers. This shall not serve as adequate compensation for the hundreds of lives that were lost, but some of the heads of the Protavic believe that it is a step in the right direction.

This decision works – partially. Though some rebellious youths still flee into the forest to join the Grovic or get eaten by bears, the majority of them begrudgingly remain in Protavic territory and live according to Protavic traditions. Thanks to the redistribution of wealth, all they have to do is fall in line in order to live comfortable lives. Unfortunately, a lot of true-born beast-bringers are angry with this decision – why must they make sacrifices for the sake of lesser people, especially when they are so disobedient and ungrateful? Thankfully, they merely grumble to one another and do not take action against the tribe. They remain loyal, for now.

A generation passes.

Gradually, the dominated tribes seem to be adapting to the beast-bringing way of life. Two fifths of the clan now consider themselves Protavic to some extent. As diversity dwindles, the tribe's identity grows stronger and more resilient.

>The civilisation gets +10 Cohesion.

However, something has happened in the region that was once Glachovic territory. As quick as lightning, a band of raiders armed with longbows and clad in bearskins slew a dozen tribesmen and abducted almost twenty more. They fled across the river and into Scagravic territory before our tribe was able to retaliate, but there is no doubt – these must be the descendants of the huntsmen who abandoned their clan to its fate. Worse still, they either belong to the tree-dwellers or they are welcome among them. Something must be done about this.

>The civilisation gets -30 Population.

Our tribe could station the Vuvovic in the Glachovic settlement. In order to prevent any further attacks, our tribe's finest warriors should move to our tribe's border with the tree-dwellers. The Glachovic might not approve of their presence.

Our tribe could launch a counterattack against the Scagravic. The Protavic must show that they are not to be trifled with. Perhaps if the Vuvovic launch an assault of their own, the hunters and their tree-dwelling allies will think twice before they attack again.

Our tribe could go to war against the tree-dwelling tribe. The Scagravic shall suffer the same fate as every other tribe that has crossed the beast-bringers in the past. They must be crushed and brought into the fold, no matter the cost.

Our tribe could offer tribute to the Scagravic to appease them. Future hostilities may be averted with a bit of diplomacy and a generous contribution of Protavic livestock, though the beast-bringers no longer have an endless supply of pigs to spare.

Our tribe could cast out the Glachovic people and keep their land. If the hunters want their people back, they can have them, but the Protavic shall be keeping their land. Those who still consider themselves Glachovic shall be sent across the river into Scagravic territory.

Our tribe could relinquish control of the Glachovic people. The conquest of the hunters was a mistake. Perhaps by releasing them and allowing them to live freely and independently once more, the Protavic shall earn the forgiveness of these runaway warriors.

In my opinion it is too soon to go to war again. Going to war not only entails population loss but the process of dealing with the defeated tribes has significant costs to us, right at the moment when we need time to assimilate our new population, lest we become a true minority within our own tribe. While we could defeat them merely for their land and then exile the rest, that kind of seems a waste, and may empower the forest dwelling Grascan.

That being said, while we are traditionally diplomats and appeasers, we have proven our warrior spirit in recent times, and I'd like to avoid further costs to security, population and happiness. So a slow-walk towards war or a defensive posture works for me, giving us enough time to work on our low stats while preventing our militarism from getting too low as we stay firmly martial and prevent receding into our old ways. We're stronger than that now.

>Station the Vuvovic in the Glachovic settlement.

The blood-drinkers are sent to stand guard over the land that once belonged to the Glachovic. From there, they watch over the river that serves as the border between our tribe's territory and that of the tree-dwellers. Just as importantly, they keep as a close eye on the local families and ensure that they remain loyal to the clan. Fraternisation with enemies of the Protavic shall not be tolerated.

Some of the elderly men and women who still consider themselves Glachovic are old enough to recall the war that led to their conquest. They remember how their fathers and brothers were butchered and how their blood was drank by the Vuvovic, whose sons and grandsons are now stationed in their homes. This leads to obvious friction between the two factions and rare instances of bloodshed. On the bright side, the presence of the Vuvovic seems to dissuade the huntsmen from launching more raids.

A generation passes.

It has become common for Protavic traders venture across the waters of the Croglatol with plenty of pork, honey and beeswax weighing down their canoes. When they return, they bring all sorts of exotic goods with them. The love that the beast-bringers have for commerce has allowed them to form an amicable relationship with almost all of the Croglatol's clans.

>The civilisation gets +5 Prosperity.

However, there is one tribe in particular they shall trade with, more than other – which shall it be?

They could focus on the sealskins. Our tribe still regularly trades with the Toprocravic and has done so for centuries, but the Protavic could still benefit from improving their relationship with the sealskins.

They could focus on the tree-dwellers. They are the only tribe that ours has not been able to barter with whatsoever. But with some effort and a lot of tribute sent in their direction, they may become less hostile.

They could focus on the stone men. The Rodac make great use of shining stones that they dig out of their land. They use them for all of their tools and weapons, which are superior to any that our tribe produces.

They could focus on the wood-burners. In order to burn down so many trees in such a wet climate, the Bodravic use a viscous and flammable substance that is as black as night. They also use it to waterproof their boats.

They could focus on the light-bringers. Though the Drocravic don't produce any unique trade goods, they are talented farmers and their fields produce an extraordinary amount of roots and legumes.

They could focus on the smoke people. In order to the produce the intoxicating smoke that their tribe is known for, the Pracruvic produce a variety of dried flowers. Perhaps our tribe could adopt this tradition.

the wood burners seem like a cool tribe but stone men overall seem more useful. I was hoping wood burners would have started making explosives of some kind, like primitive Molotovs. Could be OP but they haven’t made it *yet* as far as we know. We will observe their progress with great interest.

>>5707918
No point. Tree dwellers show hostility but I doubt they have any interest in wars. They’re busy hiding in trees. It’s a waste of resources to give them and get nothing in return - there is no guarantee they will become peaceful. We won’t gain anything substantial. Resources should be used elsewhere where we can reap more benefits.
>>
>>5707921
Keep in mind, we won’t be in the lake for long. Eventually, we will move out and expand to the Grascan. Also we’ve also had a trade relations with them before so it’s good to expand our influence.

>>5708242
I would assume the Bodravic are using bitumen from natural oil seeps. Bitumen, tar, asphalt and other things you find in seeps suck for those kind of things things since it's really viscous and difficult to burn, and oil seeps rarely yield much in the way of the lighter oil fractions since it all evaporates off or soaks away to leave the heavy dregs behind. This kind of oil source is unlikely to be used for much more than sealant and binder until the industrial revolution when it may guide the first true oil drillers to the reservoir beneath.
>>
>>5708244
I don't know, the Croglatol is a very big lake, the Grascan is heavily wooded and filled with beasts while the rivers are a faster, and safer method of travel.

Fire!

As for cultural integration rather than assimilation, I'm most interested in some sort of tradition that enables good record keeping. Something like the Bruslavic's singing or the Toprocravic's pedagogic scrimshaw. Something that allows us to retain wisdom and lessons throughout the ages.

The rest is meh so far from what we know, imo. Just having the tech is fine. Though the practice of expanding into the woods using fire could also be cool, so having that as cultural aspect rather than just the tech could be useful.

The Protavic find a great deal of value in the shining stones that the Rodac use. This mineral is apparently found in larger rocks and though it appears green on the surface, it becomes lustrous and orange once it is polished – it is copper. After the rest of the rock has been chipped away, the metal can then be worked into an appropriate shape through painstaking effort.

The amount of labour required to make useful tools out of this material is extensive, but the final result is superior to anything made out of flint. Copper knives, arrowheads, spearheads, adzes and chisels do not break so easily and they can be sharpened whenever their edges grow dull. Additionally, a less reliable source of this metal has been discovered, along the river that borders Scagravic territory. The native copper found here must have been washed down from the Sharoc, the river's origin. Some of the tribe ponder expansion in that direction, away from the hospitable shores of the Croglatol, but decide against it. It is too soon.

A generation passes.

Though the relationship between the Protavic and Toprocravic has cooled to the point where the tribes can no longer be considered allies or even friends, they still trade with each other. However, it has come to the attention of our tribe that whenever the sealskins visit the shores that once belonged to the singers, a few people inevitably go missing.

After some investigation, it is discovered that these traders are responsible for smuggling tribesmen who identify as Bruslavic out of our tribe's territory and into their own. Apparently the traditions of the singers are welcome and tolerated in Toprocravic land and it's likely that they have been doing this for quite some time. At some point in the past, the two clans must have been quite close.

>The civilisation gets -0.5% Rate of Growth.

Our tribe could demand the return of the singers. At this point, our tribe is almost certainly stronger than the Toprocravic. They would be fools to risk conflict with the Protavic over this issue.

Our tribe could bring an end to trade with the sealskins. This shall damage the wealth of the Protavic people and their relationship with the sealskins, but at least it will put a stop to this exodus.

Our tribe could offer tribute if the human trafficking stops. The Protavic will need to offer a great deal of gifts to the sealskins in order to improve relations and convince them to stop.

Our tribe could confiscate the property of those who leave the tribe. The singers shall be allowed to leave the Protavic if they want. However, they must leave behind everything they own.

It is decided that those who wish to leave behind the Protavic way of life shall be allowed to do so, but they must leave behind their wealth with the tribe. If the Toprocravic would take in these emigrants, then they shall have to provide for them. The tools, livestock and other belongings left behind by these defectors shall be given to those who remain loyal to the tribe.

On one hand, there are a significant number of radicals who gladly accept this opportunity to abandon their conquerors in favour of a new life. Though no one alive is old enough to remember the war, many of the Bruslavic and Glachovic families still teach their children to resent the beast-bringers. For them, this is a chance to leave the Protavic behind in a way that doesn't risk punishment.

On the other hand, the majority of the conquered peoples find that life is quite comfortable among the Protavic. This policy provides yet another incentive for them to remain with the beast-bringers and adopt their way of life. As the disaffected leave the tribe behind and those who stay grow increasingly loyal, the rate of assimilation increases dramatically.

A generation passes.

For the first time in over a century, the majority of our tribe consider themselves Protavic. Those who call themselves beast-bringers can be found in every corner of the clan's territory and hold considerable influence. As societal pressures on the conquered families increase, so too shall the rate at which they assimilate.

>The civilisation gets +10 Cohesion.

When the Protavic people butcher their livestock, they strive to make good use of every part of the animal. In recent years, the beast-bringers have taken this practice to new heights by charring animal bones to create soot, which is then mixed with animal fat and water. The final product is an early form of ink. Though this substance shall be used for all sorts of things, our tribe shall value it for one reason more than any other.

It shall be used primarily for painting pictures. Pictographs and ideograms shall be drawn on strips of tree bark, not only for the sake of artistic expression but also for the purpose of teaching children.

It shall be used primarily for marking property. Each family shall be assigned a symbol and their livestock shall be stained with their mark. This should bring an end to ownership disputes.

It shall be used primarily for drawing tattoos. The Vuvovic will be encouraged to bring their gruesome tradition of ritual scarification to an end and replace it with this less detrimental practice.

In the end, our tribe shall primarily use ink for...

The Provatic people's primary use for this ink is the creation of art. Once a strip of bark has been peeled off from a birch tree, it can be used as a medium for drawing pictures. To begin with, our tribe just scrawls simple and meaningless images for their own amusement but this practice quickly evolves into something more. Storytellers no longer have to rely solely on their memories when their tales can be recorded using pictographs, and primitive picture puzzles are developed as a means of challenging the minds of children.

With the passage of time, our tribe shall come up with all sorts of uses for these birch bark scrolls and the ink that is used to draw on them. But right now, they serve as little more than a source of amusement and a mnemonic method of recording information.

A generation passes.

Over two thirds of our tribe have consider themselves Protavic these days. They test each other with riddles and rebuses, they display their affection for each other by exchanging gifts and they mourn the loss of their loved ones by drinking sacred mead over their graves. Those who reject this lifestyle make up a shrinking minority of the clan and there is no doubt that they will soon disappear entirely, thanks to a combination of social pressure and emigration. Many of our tribesmen have a hard time imagining that there was ever a war at all.

But once more, war has come to the shores of the Croglatol.

On an overcast summer's day, an envoy clad in sealskins to speak with the leaders of our tribe. Once the heads of the families have assembled, the emissary shares his message with them – the Toprocravic are going to conquer and claim the Pracruvic as their own, land and people alike. If the Protavic people value the peace that they share with their seal-clubbing neighbours, then they will not involve themselves in the coming conflict. Our tribe are being asked – or warned – to stay out of this.

Our tribe could comply with the wishes of the Toprocravic. There is no need for the Protavic to get involved.

Our tribe could demand that the sealskins abandon this plan. If they go through with this, the beast-bringers will punish them.

Our tribe could use this as an opportunity to conquer the sealskins. While they are occupied with the smoke people, they will be vulnerable.

Our tribe could send in the blood-drinkers to help the Toprocravic. Surely they would appreciate their help during this conquest.

Our tribe could win back the favour of the sealskins with tribute. By giving them gifts, the Protavic can befriend them once more.

>>
>>5709157
>Comply with the wishes of the Toprocravic.

Meh, this isn't our business. Not really interested in the Pracruvic.

I also want to avoid negative entanglements with the other tribes. It'd be nice to recover some more statwise. That, and attacking and absorbing the sealskins at this stage could earn us a rep for treachery and we still aren't in a great stage to go absorbing other tribes yet. Likewise to my recollection we don't know the alliances or friendships the other tribes may have, so assisting the sealskins may earn us ire beyond that of the attacked tribe. Plus, if I recall correctly, the sealskins dislike the Vuvovic, so they may not want the aid.

I'd be fine with offering tribute, but I recall that usually we offered tribute to avoid violence or as payment rather than gifting giving when we are in a superior position. Not sure I want to give away our still limited wealth for friendship at this stage.
>>
>>5709157
>Ask for a ‘gift’ to ensure that we stay out of the conflict

While I’m not inclined to get involved - staying out just allows them to get stronger while doing nothing for us. We might as ask for some tribute from them
>>
Actually, now that I go back through our previous conquests or times other tribes melded with ours, the costs vary depending on the circumstances, but it seems assimilating the Bruslavic and Glachovic each cost us 10 cohesion and equality, whether this was due to the size of the populations or the specific fact that we became a minority in our own tribe and the fact that we were forcibly assimilating them rather than accepting them I don't know. But, the point is that I think upon reflection that we COULD actually handle conquering the sealskins.

The question is do we want to. For me that is yes, but not now. I want to integrate their cultural ways into our own, but war on our western territories or assisting by sending Vuvovic leaves us vulnerable again in the east against the Scagravic. I'm also not really sure if it is in character for us to outright engage in naked annexation like that. Maybe if we get our friendship high enough again and gain enough prosperity we'll get the choice to get integrate immigrants again. Or maybe not, since the choice was already previously made.

Specifially offer for our warriors to be stationed in their homelands, so they don't have to worry about it being left undefended.
Since they're known as the boat-dwellers, it makes most sense for their warriors to take the trip accross the Croglatol for the conquest of the Pracruvic.

If they agree we can even celebrate this renewal of friendship by having some honey water.

>Demand that the sealskins abandon this plan.
I know I've been all for buddying up to the Toprocravic, but we have to draw the line here. We cannot simply allow a tribe that shares a border with us to grow larger, stronger, and to have more territory, especially not if they aren't on very good terms with us. We are the largest tribe of the lake and it behooves us to make sure the status quo sticks, not only because that means that no single tribe could challenge us, but it's much more beneficial to trade with a collection of small tribes than to get gouged by a single large one that is, again, not on good terms with us anymore.

If we ignore the politics of the lake and stick our heads in the sand, decisions that we may not like will be made without us, we will lose the opportunity to advance our own interests in places other than our territory, and a group of people who probably have a great deal to offer in terms of trade, technology, and culture will be closed off to us forever.

Don't let them do this, or if you must take the passive route, at least ask for a payment in exchange for not getting involved, like >>5709177 says.

We have a position of strength that we've worked very hard to achieve here over the past few centuries, and letting it wither away and die by being overly passive would be a real shame.
>>
>>5709177
That’s actually not a bad idea but I’ve never seen the QM accept >write in
or custom options so I think you can only choose the ones specified by QM
>>
>>5709327
I'm fine with asking for payment as well. But I think the tribes on the southern shore will be fine, they have their own alliances presumably and even if the Pracruvic tribe gets gobbled up I could see it setting the stage for the southern tribes to band together to cut the Toprocravic down to size or asking us for aid.
>>
>>5709176
Yea this is what I was thinking. It’s the time of growth not war. War does have a lot of penalties like hit on cohesion and such. And ya I don’t see why we should offer tribute anymore. We’re strong enough not to offer tribute out of fear and idk if it’s beneficial it’s worth giving stuff to topocravic when they started smuggling people out of our land. Our relationship with lukewarm at best.
>>
>>5709346
I accept write-ins, as mentioned in >>5693005 as evidenced by previous write-ins, like the suggestion that the Toprocravic should raid the Glachovic.
>>
>>5709347
I just think it's irresponsible to let a tribe that shares a border with us, and doesn't like us, to expand their wealth, population, land, and strength without doing anything in response.

Look it is what it is, if the rest of the elders vote to stay out of it that's what we'll do, but politics is made by being active and seeing the opportunity in the events handed to you and turning them to your advantage. I just feel like we're missing an opportunity here.
>>
>>5709375
You may be right, time will tell. I personally want to deal with the Scagravic before making an enemy of the Toprocravic by doing a hegemonic flex. But I could see the possibility of the seal clubbers absorbing another tribe and then striking us while we turn to deal with the Scagravic if we don't deal with them or prevent them from getting too strong anyways.

I will say that while the Toprocravic getting strong is worry, we needn't fear them taking our spot as the top dog just yet. We split the 500ish Bravigrovic women/children between the Toprocravic and the Bruslavic, then subsequently conquered and assimilated the Bruslavic and Glachovic while accepting the Vuvovic into our tribe as well. So we should still top out on population and militarism. (iirc we get a 0.50 boost or something for the Vuvovic in particular or something.)

I think that as far as I can tell we are the most powerful, single tribe in Croglatol, probably only the Rovac could compete. I also worry about the Scagravic but I think since we didn't react aggressively to their raids earlier they might cool off in a couple generations.

The Vuvovic not only count as having 0.50 more militarism than the rest of us, but they are 3 times as effective as one of our standard combatants. They're worth their weight in gold for sure.

Since it doesn't seem like anyone else is interested in stopping them, could I induce you to officially the support "Ask for a Gift to not get involved" for QM's count?

Uh guys I get the concept of asking for tribute here but it’s definitely going to sour relations and bring us to semi-hostile state.

Which is not really a good thing given we’re in a hostile state with the tree-dwellers on the opposite side of the boat-men. Do we really want two hostile tribes on both sides of us? It leaves us vulnerable to attack if we ever decide to go to war with one of them, they can pincer us.
>>
I’m changing my option >>5709161
to this >>5709177

This is by far the best option. We aren’t involved in the war and we get some reward which is good payback for when they smuggled people from our territory and didn’t ask our permission. Remember these are the morons who asked us to pay money when they’re people willing came to our side.

Furthermore, by not involving ourselves in the war, we can see how the events unfold. I have a feeling southern tribes will band togthere, especially the fire clans - light-bringers, wood burners and smoke people - and it would be a major war. They might ask for our help. Then we strike and conquer. It will be an easy victory because it’s 4 tribes against one.

I would like to avoid war but I’d much prefer if he had less enemies on the field. If sealskins become too strong, they can be a threat and if they make an alliance with the tree cunts, we’re in trouble.
>>
>>5709576
ah crap, couple of grammatical mistakes. Sorry about that
>>
Also guys I was thinking about this for awhile now,

Not sure if you remember this but I made a post saying that we might have made a mistake assimilating the bruslavic (singers). Now that I think of it, assimilating them wasn’t a bad idea. You know why? Because if we accepted them, they would have been ok with us but totally against the vuvovics. It could have lead to a civil war and we’d have to choose sides. It would have been bad.

The singers always disliked the bloodrinkers
>>
Locking the vote there.
>>
>>5709527
There's a river between us and the Scagravic, which is a very effective natural barrier. I'm willing to bet that we have double the fighting men of the Toprocravic without even counting our Vuvovic warriors, and not only do we share an immediate border with them, but they're hard up against a river blocking their retreat if it comes to a fight.

This is not to mention that if the Toprocravic are on the verge of warring with the Pracruvic it is very doubtful that they have allies on the other side of the shore, and it is very likely that a gift of tribute and a fine diplomat could induce some tribes from the other shores to fight with us.

TL;DR: I don't advocate for getting into war lightly, but we should not let our policy be dictated by fear of being between two hostile tribes, because if worst comes to worst I think even a war with both of them turns out solidly in our favor, barring some unforeseen calamity of course.
>>
>>5709585
Eh, I think the weight of time passing would've put that to rest once they were all under our aegis. Lots of people disliked the Vuvovics, even amongst our own tribe. Keeping their own cultural mores would've been one thing but they would still be in our tribe and we could've monitored their history-keeping because anyone can listen to the songs they sing. So the rage would at seeing their kin sucked dry would probably die out with the generations passing. We'd be around to remind them that THEY attacked the Vuvovics, not the other way around, and that we all fought together against Gravigrovic.

Not every atrocity committed or unjust war started will lead to civil war if we integrate or accept conquered people. It most likely depends on our stats, and yes the story, but eventually certain threads are dealt.

>The civilisation gets +20 Prosperity.

If the sealskins want the Protavic to not interfere with their conquest, they must be willing to pay. Throughout their history, the beast-bringers have been the ones who have had to pay tribute and kowtow to their neighbouring tribes. Now it is time for our tribe to turn the tables and demand compensation from the Toprocravic. The messenger looks quite displeased when he hears the decision of the great families, but he swears to take this message back to the leaders of his clan.

Within a week, the behaviour of the Toprocravic traders has changed. They do not ask anything in return for the blubber, sealskins and bone carvings that they bring. Instead, they just solemnly offer these luxuries as gifts for the great families. This steady stream of goods continues to flow into Protavic territory, long after our clan learns that the smoke people have been defeated. Their lands have been seized, their people are forced to live alongside their sealskin conquerors and now, the Toprocravic are free to expand along the great river that drains westward, towards the distant sea.

None of this is particularly relevant to our tribe. The Protavic people are being rewarded for turning a blind eye to this conquest and for the next several years, the beast-bringers shall lead carefree lives and want for nothing.

A generation passes.

Many of the Protavic feel as though they have entered a golden age. Their lives are leisurely and relaxed, with plenty of free time that is spent playing games and partaking in decadent feasts, during which they give their thanks to the Allmother and drink their fill of honey water. While most of the tribe are happy to enjoy this period of prosperity, some of the family leaders are concerned that the beast-bringers are becoming indolent. They confer with one another as they try to decide upon a course of action that will benefit the tribe.

So far, most of the votes have revolved around deciding our tribe's reaction to various situations. In order to change the pace a little, I am giving you a break from that. Instead, this vote is an opportunity to be proactive and decide if there is anything in particular that you want our tribe to do.

If you want suggestions, possible options include diplomacy with a tribe of your choice (though I would like to know what you hope to achieve with this diplomacy), expansion in an unorthodox direction (such as into the Grascan or up the riverside towards the Sharoc), a military campaign against a target of your choice (though this will likely lead to a Special Situation) or some other sort of project. It's ultimately up to you guys, though if a write-in is too outlandish or wouldn't work for some reason, I will say so.

>Write in a project that you would like our tribe to undertake, or vote for another write-in that you approve of.

Croglatol is getting quite familiar by now. We should send expeditions deep into Grascan to make our world bigger, make new friends, and find new stuff to buy and sell. We should seek to discover what wonders and peoples lie in the great green beyond - after all, we value knowledge and diplomacy, no?
>>
>>5709632
I’m going to watch the thread and then make decision. Things I think would be great for the tribe:

1) improved tool making to increase our productivity and prosperity. Also maybe make new weapons
2) better defensive structures like walls and forts
3) animal herding would be nice. We could try something different this time.
4) alliance with stone man and wood burners. This could help bolster trade and more importantly, make are enemies weary of fighting us.
>>
>>5709632
>Hold a grand feast inviting all the elders of each tribe around the Lake.

This is easier than individual diplomacy. Sacrifice some prosperity which is our highest stat to get on better terms with all the tribes or atleast get to know them better. Probably a really good chance to set up some trade.
>>
>>5709656
That’s actually good idea ngl. Makes us very diplomatic.
>>
>>5709654
This could be interesting but we are very ill prepared to explore the grascan. We need atleast some kind of strong pet companion with us like wolf or bear. Furthermore, we haven’t really specced with anything that helps exploration that much. Maybe we have access to fire and stuff, it could make exploration even better.
>>
>>5709652
Uhh idk man. That means we’ll directly be at war with Topocravic. I’m not too keen on war atm. Let’s enjoy the peace for awhile
>>
>>5709660
Ah shit nvm, you meant the other side of the river. It’s not a bad idea.
>>
>>5709632
I’d support any of these:
>Work on domesticating a new animal
>Explore / cut down trees in Grascan to create new living space for our people
>Invent defensive fortifications and possibly construct them with the new wood we have gathered
>>
>>5709632
>Establish a Great Market
Send diplomatic overtures to every tribe of the lake and invite them to all trade their wares in one place. No longer must each tribe trade piecemeal with each other in fits and starts, but we will establish a great place on the shore of the Croglatol where every tribe is welcome to come and barter their wares with each other.

This has the benefit of shoring up diplomacy at least a little with ALL tribes of the lake if they agree, and of course the Protavic as the hosts will take a small percentage of all goods traded, as is only sensible.
>>
>>5709659
We have fire, it's been mentioned a few times. I don't think we need an animal since we're adept at living off the land for supplies and exploration in dense forest is often done on foot, but we would need a beast of burden to do overland trade. On second thoughts I don't think we've invented any form of navigation yet either. I'll shelve this one for later and see what else gets proposed, but it's something I definitely think we should do at earliest opportunity.
>>
>>5709664
I don’t know if that’d really work. We are the richest but we aren’t the best traders and user of boats . It’d also be really inefficient for tribes on the other side of the lake to use a market on our shores. I don’t think it’d really even help with diplomacy if we explicitly do this for our own advancement with things like tarrifs.
>>
>>5709632
Hoooo boy, there is a lot we could do, expand eastwards, look inwards spiritually/culturally, try and use one of the techs we gathered to be put to a new use, domesticate a new animal, if we had ready access to stone we could make a temple or icon of some sort, maybe just make news friends, I dunno.

For now I'll support >>5709652

Historically both domesticating animals and expanding our territory has led to large score gains.
>>
>>5709668
Well I bet we could combine it with your idea to have a feast for all the tribal families where we announce it. No tribe has specced into trading as far as I know, so we will be at the same spot as everyone else, and yes it's a journey to cross the lake, but it's much more efficient to make one trip across the lake than to make 3 trips to 3 separate tribes.
>>
Ok how about this guys, I see two main ideas that most people would be good with
1.Explore/Expand
2.Diplomacy of some kind.

I think if we're smart we can combine this, depending on QM's lenience. We could pursue an alliance with the Bodravic, the Wood-Burners, and have them teach us the art of making pitch/burning trees. This will
1.Give us an ally and a foothold on the far side of the Croglatol
2.Allow us to expand inward into the Grascan without stretching our border even further east, which btw is a thin border we'd have to share with the Scagravic
3.Give us a secret weapon if we ever had to go to war with the Scagravic, as they make their homes high up in the trees, practical knowledge of starting a controlled forest fire certainly seems useful.

What do we think?

>>5709656

Looks like there's currently a tie between exploring the Grascan and holding a grand feast. I don't have much time free time today so I'm going to leave this vote up for another twelve hours.
>>5709637
You're right when you say that the Protavic mainly deal with pigs and bees. There are some tribesmen who deal with other animals, there are even some early breeds of dog, but swine are the primary livestock and bees have an important place in the culture. If this option is chosen, another animal will be elevated to a position of importance, economically and/or culturally.
>>5709659
Fire is so vital to human development that you began with access to it. Other starting technology included primitive tools, animal skins for clothes, temporary shelters, the concept of farming and probably a few other things I forgot to mention.
>>5709862
As sedentary pastoralists, pretty much all of the Protavic have chosen to live in huts and abandon the temporary shelters of old. However, they're still unsophisticated. The walls are made using wattle and daub and the roofs are made out of thatched reeds. There are a few dry stone houses too, but it's not a popular method of construction.
>>
>>5710163

If it's between these two options I will support the feast to invite all the other tribes. I think friendly relations have more value than additional territory right now.
My vote was >>5709706 (domesticating animals).
>>
>>5709632

I vote for Grand Feast as an opening ceremony for the Great Market. I think the events complement each other without being too dissimilar. Both of them help beast-bringers with diplomacy.

I can safely say that others who voted for Grand Feast and Great Market would support this vote. I think this is the best option so far.

If QM feels that two situations I stated can’t be combined , then I’ll vote for grand feast only. But yea, I strongly feel they can be combined. I don’t see why the grand feast can’t be used as prelude to the Great Market.
>>
>>5710278
I find the idea of having a “grand market” pretty silly when we’re still in the Neolithic era. We don’t even have a concept of currency at this point. Trade does exist but not on the scale where something like a grand market would work. Especially with such little population.
>>
>>5710531
Oh that’s a good point! Shit didn’t think of that. Yea we don’t have a proper currency, it wouldn’t work out. Also the population size is still small, yea it wouldn’t help out trade. Ig I’m going to stick with the grand feast only.
>>
>>5710531
Hmmm...well it's obviously not a popular idea but silly is over-exaggerating. First of all it depends largely on what QM has in mind but using real world analogues we are more or less at the very, very end of the Neolithic with the discovery and utilization of copper tools.

Second, currency didn't start off in it's fully realized state as a fixed denomination of value for free exchange. It actually started off as a receipt for specific amounts of, you guessed it, bartered goods, and it's likely a central bartering venue would hasten the discovery of such a thing, as in real life.

Third, I believe you might be thinking of a "market" in too limited a sense. Markets existed in many, many different varieties for many, many different purposes as soon as sedentary civilization came into existence. They were basically a centralization of convenience, if there are 10 tribes and everybody is trading with everybody, instead of 1 tribe making 10 trips to trade, if is much, much more efficient for 1 tribe to make 1 trip to a place where all 10 tribes trade all the time. It doesn't have to be fancy. As a side note tariffs might seem like a big idea but it's as simple as bringing a gift to the tribe who hosts the trading place every time you show up.

TL;DR: I'm fine with people not choosing my idea, having a big feast was a better idea anyway, but I disagree that the idea itself was without merit.
>>
>>5710575

I feel with the limited trade that's happening (e.g. we trade with the Sealskins only, maybe one other tribe?), and the small distance between all the tribes (for any of the tribes on the south it would be more efficient to trade directly with one another than to cross the Croglatol, twice), that a central trading location is in none of the tribe's interest currently.

Not sure how we could profit of it either. Having this hub is certainly nice, but asking for a fee or a cut of the traded goods would only discourage the usage of this hub by the other tribes more. We could oversee what goods are being traded, and thus be in the know about any new goods entering the market, or estimating how well other tribes are doing, but that doesn't seem that beneficial at our current stage.
>>
>>5710625
As I said, it's obvious that other people aren't digging it, and I'm not going to keep defending it because I'm fine with the other likely choices. I understand that other people have a right to their opinions and what I objected to was just somebody saying that the idea was completely without merit, but that's as far as I'll go.

I said my piece and I'd rather not clutter up the thread with too much pointless back and forth.

Entering a Special Situation: A Sumptuous Repast

It is decided – the Protavic shall host a great feast in the heart of their territory, which the leaders of all of the other tribes shall be invited to. It shall take some time to prepare – the best part of a year in fact, in order to plump up the livestock and sow the seeds for a suitably massive harvest that shall satify our tribe's guests. Nevertheless, it will be worth the effort.

When autumn arrives, the beast-bringers have far more than just honey and swine to prepare for the feast. Deer and ducks are hunted, berries and nuts are gathered, cereals and legumes are harvested and fish are lured from the depths of the Croglatol. As the tribe prepares itself for the coming festivities, messengers are sent to every tribe in the region, from the seal-clubbing Toprocravic to the hostile Scagravic, to invite them to partake in this great feast.

Interestingly, out of all of the clans, those are the only two that do not accept the invitation outright.

The sealskins claim that several of their leaders are descended from the singers, who were conquered by our tribe and suffered greatly at the hands of the Vuvovic. They have a great deal of respect for their heritage and they will only agree to attend this feast if they will not have to suffer the presence of the loathsome blood-drinkers. If our tribe's warrior caste are not banned from attending, the Toprocravic will refuse to participate.

As for the Scagravic, the tree-dwellers demand an exchange. They know of the murderous ways of the Protavic and refuse to trust our tribe, not without a little leverage. For every member of the tribe that they will send to attend the feast, they demand three hostages. At this point, they are planning on sending a group of twenty representatives, so they expect sixty hostages. If anything happens to this delegation, the captives will be slaughtered – and if our tribe refuses to provide the tree-dwellers with these hostages, they will not come at all.

Our tribe could ban Vuvovic warriors from the feast. The blood-drinkers might not appreciate this insult, but at least the Toprocravic will be pleased.

Our tribe could carry on without the Toprocravic. The sealskins are gravely mistaken if they think they are in a position to dictate terms to the Protavic.

>Ban Vuvovic warriors from the feast.
>Carry on without the Toprocravic.

Our tribe could hand over the hostages to the tree-dwellers. Sixty men, women and children will remain in Scagravic custody until the feast is over.

Our tribe could carry on without the Scagravic. They already the Protavic, there is no point in trying to build rapport with one of our tribe's enemies.

(Perhaps request they try to be as hospitable to ours as we will be to them.)
>>
>>5710645
>Ban Vuvovic warriors from the feast.

>Hand over the hostages to the tree-dwellers.

For the Scagravic It’s not like they aren’t right keke. I don’t expect any treachery since the entire leadership of each tribe would know. For the Toprocravic they’re the ones I want to make peace with the most so I’m willing to relent, the Vuvovic would make the leader of other tribes feel uncomfortable too as well knowing them.
>>
>>5710645
>Ban Vuvovic warriors from the feast.
>Hand over the hostages to the tree-dwellers.

If we do this, let's not do it half-assed. The Vuvovic have been with us a long time, they knwo we value them, though I don't doubt they'll be offended I'm sure they can handle it.

As was already said, the Scagravic request isn't so dangerous seeing as how great families from every tribe will be there. If they pull anything I'm sure every other tribe of the Croglatol will band together to put them down on the spot.

Hmmm, devious. QM if you'd be so kind I'd like to switch myself >>5710671 from Banning the Vuvovic at the feast to

>Carry on without the Toprocravic
>>
>>5710645

>Ban Vuvovic warriors from the feast.
Since it is a feast of the leaders, I wouldn't expect our warrior caste to be present in the first place?

If this is about security where we need warriors to be present, we should only have our non-caste warriors guard the feast. Our caste warriors meanwhile should all be stationed near the tree-dwellers border, in case the hostage goes south.

If this is about banning all leaders from our side with Vuvovic heritage, then the Toprocravic should be banned from the feast for trying to dictate who of our leaders can be present. We as the heads of families see each others as equals, and the heads of the Vuvovic families are no lesser. Any other tribe trying to harm this cohesion is an unwanted guest in my eyes.

>Hand over the hostages to the tree-dwellers
Could we use any of the unassimilated minoritied or slaves for this? If we use our people we should consider either those who still need to be punised for a crime (being used as hostages is their punishment), or letting people voluntarily sign up with the prospect of being compensated afterwards.
>>

We gotta take the risk. Also banning Vuvovic will cause cohesion and happiness loss but our cohesion and happiness is quite high so we don’t need to worry too much. Having all of them attend might be the step in the right direction.

We don't know what relation the tree-dwellers have with the southern tribes. In a tense situation they're likely gonna use our hostages as leverage to choose their side in any conflict that arises during the feast.
>>
>>5712522
But we have their leaders. Don’t forget that. If they end up stirring shit up and shit goes south, we can always wipe the tree dwellers out of existence. We have the military power to do it

The demands of the sealskins are refused – the Vuvovic shall be allowed to revel alongside everyone else and if that makes the Toprocravic uncomfortable, they are welcome to remain in their territory while the other tribes of the Croglatol enjoy the feast. They shall not participate in the festivities.

As for the tree-dwellers, they shall have their hostages. The blood-drinkers oversee the collection of sixty tribespeople from the territory that once belonged to the Glachovic and escort them to the land of the Scagravic. The families of these captives are outraged and upset by this, but they are assured that their loved ones will come back safe and sound. In exchange, the tree-dwellers agree to attend the feast.

On the day before the moon is at its fullest and its brightest, the delegates of the other tribes start to arrive in the Protavic heartland. The representatives of the tree-dwellers are escorted across our tribe's territory by the Vuvovic, while the other clans arrive by boat. They don't just bring their elders and leaders either – they bring gifts as well.

The Rodac bring plenty of dried goat meat, which is considerably tougher than the pork that our tribe is used to and has a much bolder flavour. The Drocravic bring conical loaves of bread, which apparently demonstrate of the transformative power of fire. As for the Bodravic, they bring pots full of viscous black topran, the substance that they use to burn trees. As the wood-burners do not produce any foodstuffs that our tribe does not, they hope that this will suffice as a gift.

As for the Scagravic, they bring bags full of glistening red berries. Just as the leaders of the Protavic are about to thank them for this contribution to the feast, one of them recognises what type of berry it is. It is one of the varieties that the tribe's gatherers are taught to avoid, due to its poisonous nature. When confronted with this revelation, the tree-dwellers are terribly confused and insist that it is not toxic at all. These berries are apparently a staple of their diet – or so they claim.

Our tribe could reject the gift. The tree-dwellers should be admonished for trying to bring poison to a feast.

Our tribe could test for poison. Have someone sample the berries and see how his body reacts to them.

Our tribe could limit consumption. Only the Scagravic should be allowed to eat these berries.

Our tribe could accept the gift. It would be wrong to offend our guests before the feast has even started.

>Reject the gift.
>Test for poison.
>Limit consumption.
>Accept the gift.
>>
>>5712617

We should realise that with the condition on which the Scagravic delegation arrived, our hostages are gonna get slaughtered if we let their delegation eat the berries and they are actually poisonous.

The effects of the poison might take a long time to kick in, testing could be useless if it has no immediate effect (how long are we willing to wait?).

>Reject the gift.
Would be the wisest option.
>>
>>5712629
That’s not wise at all. If we refuse their gift, they would take great offense to it and it would invalidate the point of the feast. I mean why even invite them in the first place
>>
>>5712617
ask them if they treat the berries before they eat them, like cook them or something. these kind of things may turn poisoneous food into edible food

Best course of action:

>>
>>5712617
>Use the berries as ink to make artwork for the feast
We do this with Charcoal, we can honor the guests by painting images of us all coming together and giving said images pride of place at the ceremony. I’d like to see the Scagravic try and appear outraged about their offering being exalted by us, albeit in a way they didn’t intend, and the best part is the berries will remain uneaten.

Here’s the thing: there is a possibility the berry isn’t poisonous at all. The leaders info on the berry might be incorrect, not everything taught down through generation is accurate. The other possibility is the berry is poisonous but the tree dwellers have a high poison tolerance so they don’t notice the poison.

Anyways, choosing the ink option kinda avoids us from risking someone from dying.

The berries shall be pulverised and their juices shall be mixed with hot animal fat. This will produce hardened lumps of red matter which can then be mixed with boiling water, in order to create ink. This colourful concoction shall be used to paint art that shall commemorate the gathering of the tribes and some of these paintings shall be offered to the Scagravic, so that they might remember this feast fondly and for generations to come.

When this explained to their leaders, many of them are baffled. To them, these berries are just food – the whole concept of ink and art is beyond them. It seems as though the tree-dwellers are technologically and culturally stunted – or perhaps any technology and cultural that they do possess revolves around the blackwood trees that they call home. They are not like the other tribes.

With a little bit of effort, the Scagravic are eventually convinced to wait. While the feast is underway, Protavic artisans will be hard at work painting pictures of the proceedings on strips of birch bark. With a little luck and provided that the tree-dwellers are kept happy while the festival is underway, these gifts will be well-received.

Once that incident is out of the way, the preparations for the feast proceed and as night falls, the celebrations begin. For the most part, everyone seems to be enjoying themselves – all of the guests are filling their bellies with fine food and wetting their thirsts with butol, that intoxicating honey water. However, some of them are using this gathering as an opportunity to speak with our tribesmen, which has led to some of them committing a faux pas.

One of the Drocravic delegates was explaining the ways of his people to an audience of Protavic listeners. The beast-bringers have always found the ways of the other tribes to be peculiar and inferior, but one of the light-bringers' traditions has upset them. He spoke of how the Drocravic cremate their dead instead of burying them – they reduce them to ashes, which are scattered to the wind. This agitated several of the Protavic, who believe that this funerary practice destroys the sacred essence of the dead and prevents it from rejoining the cycle of consumption – their Drocrom is lost forever. As for the envoy, he considers the burial rites of our tribe to be obscene and unholy – if the bodies of the dead are not burned, their corruption will forever taint the world.
>>
If something isn't done to defuse the tension, a fight may break out.

The Protavic could adopt the funerary rites of the light-bringers. The quickest way to appease the Drocravic would be by saying that the Protavic people have been wrong, and that the superior ways of the light-bringers shall be incorporated into our tribe.

The Protavic could punish those who offended the Drocravic. They should know better than to openly challenge the beliefs of other tribes. Hopefully that should be enough to satisfy the light-bringers and those who share their beliefs.

The Protavic could censure the envoy for speaking ill of our tribe's ways. He is a guest on the land of the beast-bringers and while he is here, he should respect and honour the ways of the beast-bringer. That should keep our people happy.

The Protavic could condemn the religious practices of the light-bringers. Our tribe will stand by its beliefs. The cycle of consumption is sacred and those who burn the dead commit sacrilege. Until they change their ways, they shall be considered enemies of the Protavic people.

>Adopt the funerary rites of the light-bringers.
>Punish those who offended the Drocravic.
>Censure the envoy for speaking ill of our tribe's ways.
>Condemn the religious practices of the light-bringers.

Does anyone have a good write-in because I don’t like any of these options lol. Most we can do is punish but it’s not a great option either. I really don’t want to offend and anger tribes atm.
>>
>>5716179
Same but I was leading towards censuring them for speaking ill of our ways. Maybe we could involve all the other attending tribes into this debate to share their beliefs as well, to try to find a common ground we can all agree on?
>>
>>5716195
Did they really speak ill about our ways? The representative was only explaining the funeral rites of his people and we (Protavic) ended up getting offended by it because it goes against our teaching of the Drocrom. It’s our people that are getting riled up by this. I don’t think we should cause offense to these people, i don’t think it’s fair.

However, punishing our people for this seems harsh. Hence why I wasn’t a big fan of the options given.
>>
>>5716115
>Censure the envoy for speaking ill of our tribe's ways.

Do it as politely as possible + with the overtone that it is rude to offend the religious beliefs of your hosts…

I think starting a wider discussion about religious beliefs will only result in more disagreement, so bad idea.

Better would for our leaders to drive a discussion about the aggressive Toprocravic who were the only ones to boycott this feast…

Before the situation escalates any further, a few of the tribe's leaders confront the light-bringer. It is explained that while he is welcome to enjoy the hospitality of the Protavic and learn of our clan's traditions, he is not allowed to spread his own beliefs, let alone insult those of the beast-bringers. This applies to all of the guests – if they wish to take pleasure in the feast, they must show some respect for their hosts.

The Drocravic representatives are annoyed by this declaration, as are a few of the Bodravic, who have similar traditions. Before the feast, their only exposure to the Protavic people has been merchants who hide their prejudice behind smiles. Now they are aware of the xenophobic nature of our tribe, which the beast-bringers feel no shame about. For them, this is not just an opportunity to make friends with the other clans – it is a chance to flaunt the superiority of the Protavic tribe.

Though the atmosphere never becomes as pleasant as it once was, any animosity that the guests might feel towards the beast-bringers wanes as they indulge in the feast. An excess of roasted meat and honey water is enough to lift the spirits of even the moodiest Drocravil. The celebration continues, the leaders of our tribe pay close attention to the different tribes and observe how they interact with each other, how they speak of each other and to each other.

The Bodravic and Drocravic share a strong bond. Though there are a few differences between the two tribes, it seems as though there are many similarities between them, especially regarding matters of faith. While they still engage in trade with the Topcravic, it seems as though these fire-worshipping clans are wary of the sealskins, especially after the recent conquest of the smoke people.

The Rodac don't seem to be on good terms with any of the present tribes, except for ours. The Bodravic are particularly distrustful of them, as the stone men conquered a neighbouring tribe in the distant past and the wood-burners fear they they may be next. Unfortunately, the Rodac are on very good terms with the sealskins – they trade with them as much as they trade with the Protavic.

As for the Scagravic, they are easily the most isolated tribe. They have no dealings with the light-bringers or the wood-burners, they are suspicious of their Rodac neighbours and from what some of our tribe were able to learn, they dislike the Toprocravic almost as much as they dislike the beast-bringers. They have no friends and rarely trade with anyone.
>>
Though the Protavic people seek to improve relations with all of these tribes, they can choose to favour one particular group over all of the others – at the cost of potentially upsetting any rivals that they might have.

They could favour the fire-worshippers. Not only are the Bodravic and Drocravic strong allies, but they are also suspicious of the Topcravic and neighbour their new territory. However, this might jeopardise our tribe's existing relationship with the Rodac.

They could favour the stone men. The Rodac are already the favourite trading partner of the Protavic people. Perhaps by strengthening this relationship, our tribe could turn them against the sealskins. This decision might anger that Bodravic and their allies.

They could favour the tree-dwellers. Though the Scagravic don't have much to offer, some of our tribe's leaders wish to bring an end to hostilities with them. However, after generations of animosity, many of the Protavic may disagree with this decision.

They could favour no one. Having all of these tribes as friends is more important than making an ally out of one or two of them. If earning the favour of one means upsetting another, then it isn't worth it at all.

In the end, the Protavic do not favour any of the tribes over any of the others. Whenever any sign of enmity between the people of the Croglatol appears, the beast-bringers distract their guests with liquor and games until the tension has been defused. No sides are taken and while no bonds are forged during the feast, no rivalries are born either.

There is one exception to this – one incident that isn't so easily averted.

It shouldn't be surprising that the wood-burners and tree-dwellers would inevitably clash. Due to their isolationist nature, it would seem that the Scagravic were not aware of the tree-burning ways of the Bodravic until now. When they realise that this fire-wielding tribe are responsible for the destruction of many blackwoods, the tree-dwellers are outraged and frightened. After all, their lives revolve around this gigantic species of tree – without them, they wouldn't be able to live in the forest and would be stuck by the lakeside, like all of the other tribes. They never thought that they could be destroyed so easily.

Some of the less reasonable Scagravic are already turning their knives towards the Bodravic and hurling insults at them. While the wood-burners are confused by this reaction, they are prepared to defend themselves. A brawl is on the verge of breaking out, unless the Protavic do something.

Our tribe could stay out of it. The Protavic people aren't involved in this argument and if it leaves to a rivalry between two other clans, that's a good thing, not a bad one.

Our tribe could defuse the conflict. A quick intervention is all it would take, though the Scagravic might not be pleased if the Protavic prevent them from avenging the fallen trees.

Our tribe could support the wood-burners. Their usage of topran to burn down the wilderness and replace it with habitable land is ingenious. The Protavic could learn from them.

Our tribe could side with the tree-dwellers. The essence of life is holy and by engaging in such wanton destruction, the Bodravic have damaged the sacred cycle of consumption.

We don't mind hostilities forming which we can use to our advantage later. We could even use this moment to observe how the stonemen react to this conflict and where they stand in this matter. But if it gets violent we need to:

All of the tribes are here as our guests. Not only do we need to make sure nothing happens to the Scagravic for the sake of our hostages, but we need to make sure nothing happens period. No matter who starts anything, it will become our responsibility, the word of the Protavic must be trusted and respected.

For those of you who think it's prudent to let the Scagravic and Bodravic form a rivalry. Consider that
A.They are on opposite ends of the lake, and as the Scagravic or obviously isolationist, it won't mean much in the course of the greater lake politics.
B.The revelation of knowledge that has already happened about the tree-burning is probably enough on its own to start a rivalry, no further brawl is needed.

The blood-drinkers in attendance are directed to intervene before any serious violence occurs. The Scagravic are talked down and the Bodravic are protected from any serious harm, though the tree-dwellers are somewhat annoyed by our tribe's interference. For the rest of the feast, they keep their distance from the wood-burners and treat them with suspicion and distaste.

The festivities continue without further incident, as the various clans of the Croglatol enjoy a little Protavic hospitality and revel in the wealth of food and drink that the beast-bringers provide. The atmosphere remains cheerful, if somewhat muted after the castigation of the light-bringers and the Vuvovic intervention – our tribe's guests know better than to spread their ways or act against each other, at least while they are in Protavic territory.

As the night draws to a close and the guests prepare to retire for the night and enjoy a deep slumber with full bellies, the Rodac contingent call for the attention of everyone in attendance. As a show of gratitude for everything that the beast-bringers have done, the stone men wish to offer the leaders of our tribe a gift.

The gift is a necklace of beads made of a mineral unlike any that the Protavic have ever seen before. Each bead has been polished into an almost perfect sphere and shines like a miniature sun in the firelight, without any sign of oxidisation – they are made of gold. The stone men hope that our tribe will accept this gift, not just as a gesture of gratitude but as a declaration that the Rodac and Protavic are the closest of friends.

Some of the envoys from the other tribes look a little uneasy at this suggestion.

Our tribe's leaders could acknowledge this declaration. Let everyone in attendance know that the beast-bringers and stone men are true allies – no matter what they might think of such an alliance.

Our tribe's leaders could accept the gift. While the Protavic will be grateful, they will not acknowledge this attempt to seek an alliance. Hopefully this attempt to remain neutral will keep everyone happy.

Our tribe's leaders could refuse this gift. The stone men may be slighted by this decision, but this is not the time or the place for politics. It would be wrong of the beast-bringers to favour one tribe over any other on this night.

Our tribe's leads could rebuke the Rodac. Not only would it be wrong of the beast-bringers to favour one tribe over another, it was wrong of the stone men to try and curry favour like this. Mock and deride them before the other clans.

The necklace is accepted by Prudigal of the Bupac, the pre-eminent family of the Protavic people. This distant descendant of great Glavolan acknowledges the friendship offered by the stone men and declares that the beast-bringers shall reciprocate. This announcement earns cheers from the Protavic and the Rodac alike, while the envoys from the fire-worshipping tribes frown at each other. This is not what they had hoped for.

Once the gift-giving is out of the way, the celebration winds down for the night and the various guests retire to rest. Dawn comes without incident and the representatives of the other tribe say their farewells and depart from Protavic territory. They leave with full bellies and in the case of the tree-dwellers, they return to their homes with a collection of birch bark scrolls, full of black and red paintings that depict all of the revelry that occurred. The feast has come to an end and time shall tell whether it has had much of an impact on our tribe's diplomacy. All that the beast-bringers know for sure is that it had an impact on their stockpile.

>The civilisation gets +0.1 Culture.
>The civilisation gets -10 Prosperity.

Less than a week after their envoys cross the river that serves as a border between Protavic land and theirs, the Scagravic return the hostages that were given to them. Some of our tribespeople are still displeased by the fact that hostages were given at all, but most of them are just relieved that their loved ones are back.

>Our civilisation gets +60 Population.

Ending a Special Situation: A Sumptuous Repast.

A generation passes.

With the passage of time, the impact of the great feast becomes clear.

The relationship between the Protavic people and the Drocravic tribe suffered. Despite our tribe's hospitality, they ultimately left with a poor impression of the beast-bringers. Though the light-bringers have not outright banned trade with the Protavic people, it is a rare thing these days – they view members of our clan as greedy and manipulative.

The relationship between the Protavic people and the Bodravic tribe has not changed. Though the wood-burners were somewhat upset by the treatment of the Drocravic and our tribe's friendship with the stone men, this was balanced out by the quality of the feast. The beast-bringers maintain a cordial relationship with the Bodravic and trade regularly with them.

The relationship between the Protavic people and the Scagravic tribe has improved. Previously they were hostile towards the beast-bringers, but now the tree-dwellers seem to tolerate our tribe as their neighbours. They even allow our traders to pass through the territory and occasionally indulge in a little bartering themselves.
>>
The relationship between the Protavic people and the Rodac tribe has significantly improved. Not only did their representatives enjoy the feast, but they were very pleased with our tribe's actions during it. The stone men are the most significant trading partner of the beast-bringers by a country mile – they provide the majority of our tribe's copper, in exchange for smoked meat, honey water, ink and beeswax. Additionally, should anyone ever attack the Protavic people, the Rodac are almost guaranteed to come to their defence.

However, there are some beast-bringers who believe that the tribe needs to expand and find a source of copper that it directly controls – they cannot rely on the stone men forever. These expansionists point at the river to the west, that winds down from the Sharoc mountains and empties into the Croglatol.

Unfortunately, the riverside isn't as hospitable as the shores of the great lake. While the woodland there isn't as thick as the rest of the Grascan, it's still much denser than it is by the lakeside. Animal attacks shall be a significant issue until our tribe is able to create tools that allow them to deforest the area.

This could be solved by using the sticky black topran that was given to our tribe by the Bodravic. This is the substance that the wood-burners use to clear the woodland in their territory. Our tribe have enough of it stockpiled to create a foothold along the river's length and by trading with the Bodravic, the beast-bringers could always acquire more and slowly expand.

However, this river also serves as the Protavic's border with the tree-dwellers, who have made it clear that they dislike the burning of trees. Using topran like this will earn their ire and ruin the amicable relationship that the beast-bringers have with the Scagravic.

Our tribe could expand along the river without clearing the trees. These brave pioneers will just have to suffer the consequences of living alongside wolves and bears. Such is the price of expansion.

Our tribe could use topran to burn down the forest along the river's edge. While this will allow our tribe to create a safe foothold, this course of action will earn the enmity of the Scagravic once more.

Our tribe could refuse to expand and stick to the shores of the Croglatol. The more ambitious Protavic will be upset by this decision but at least no lives will be lost. It is the safest decision.

We just improved our standing with the treeniggers, we can't fuck that up already

I was hoping for a flat medium improvement to relations with all tribes, but this is a pretty good result. We got an ally and improved with the tree-fellas

This is a long shot, but maybe our increased exposure to the territory of so many wolves and bears might provide some insight into how to tame one species or the other. We could send out the pioneers with instructions to try to focus on that.

+1. We call ourselves beast bringers but we haven’t really tamed any beasts. I would love to tame so bears or wolves, would be cool

You wrote west in your post but you mean the river east right, or do the Protavic people consider the Sharoc mountains north?
>Expand along the river without clearing the trees.
We could send our Vuvovic warriors to protect our people from the dangers. Maybe we can challenge them to capture one of the wolves or bears for us.

Maybe we can ask the tree-dwellers for insight? They surely have exposure to them, even if just from above.

Sometimes when I offer a list of technology or cultural developments, you don't just pick one and discard the rest, you choose which option you want to favour. When I brought up domestication back in >>5693177, I asked which type of animal you want to favour. Other animals are still being domesticated in small amounts, but Protavic culture favours and focuses on bees above all else - and swine because they're pastoralists, but pigs don't have the same cultural significance as bees.

But I acknowledge that a lot of people are interested in the Protavic tribe favouring more animals than just bees, so I'll keep that in mind for future updates.
>>

That makes sense. Maybe once tamed, one of the dangerous animals from the woodlands could hold a cultural signifance for our warrior caste? Being a companion which accompanies them into battle, or a good beast to spar with to train the men.
>>
maybe we could combo-domesticate bears with our bees

Great idea. Bears and bee go very well together re

The leaders of the families decide against earning the ire of the Scagravic tribe. The less that they have to worry about aggression from the tree-dwellers, the better. Those tribespeople who choose to leave the safety of the lake behind and live along the river must accept the dangers of their new life and adapt to them.

Not a year goes by in this new frontier without someone losing their life to a hungry bear, and not a week passes without someone's livestock being savaged by a pack of wolves. It's a difficult life but it isn't without reward. Copper has been found to occur along the length of the river and though most of it is oxidised and combined with other minerals, there are rare instances of native samples that our tribespeople are able to fashion into tools.

A generation passes.

At long last, the Glachovic and Bruslavic are nothing more than a memory. Those who haven't fled into the wilderness to become Grovic or surrendered their possessions in order to join the Toprocravic have adapted to the Protavic way of life. Everyone who wants to leave our tribe already has, which leads to a sharp increase in population growth as emigration grinds to a halt.

>The civilisation gets +1.2% Rate of Growth.
>The civilisation gets +10 Cohesion.

Yet not everyone is happy with life among the beast-bringers.

The Vuvovic warrior caste are frustrated – they are supposed to be warriors, yet they have no one to fight. They no longer need to keep an eye on the border with the Scagravic, nor do they need to put any rebellious Glachovic youths in their place. Some of them go years without any need for violence and as a result of this, they have become restless. Their traditions say that they must drink the blood of men to grow stronger, but how can they do this if they never shed blood?

Something needs to be done about this.

Our tribe could reform the blood-drinkers. It is time for the Vuvovic to transform into a martial order to accepts the tribe's strongest, no matter their traditions.

Our tribe could regularly raid other tribes. This shall damage our tribe's relationship with at least one other clan and could lead to war, but it gives the Vuvovic a reason to exist.

Our tribe could send the Vuvovic to hunt Grovic. While the blood-drinkers already punish vagrants who try to steal from our tribe, perhaps they should actively hunt them instead.

Our tribe could have the blood-drinkers fend off beasts. This will lead to a dramatic decrease in animal attacks but the Vuvovic want to drink the blood of men, not beasts.

>Have the blood-drinkers fend off beasts.

Drink the blood of Vuvocucks who die. We really should start preserving the blood of mighty vuvovic warriors as a tradition thing too, to give some to the mightiest warrior of the vuvovic of each generation. They'd be less pissy if they were constantly competing with each other to get the giga-blood of the vuvovic heros of the past
>>

This will give them the blood they crave, and hone their fighting and survival skills

Also it might get us some sorely needed scouting information

As a martial order they will have new blood accepting the tribes strongest bringing in new blood. They will fight the beasts of the woods and be allowed to consume the blood of those Vuvovic that fall along with the vitae of the beasts till we are once again ready to bleed our foes.

I feel with the increased number of warriors due to the reform, we could try splitting our forces to fend off both the beasts and the Grovic.
If not possible, hunting the Grovic should be our top priority since that satifies their bloodlust and solves the raiding problem.

I recall some reports generations ago that the Grovic were re-organizing. This would help put a stop to that, killing two birds with one stone.
