You are Nagata Miho, former HR employee turned idol manager alongside two other newly appointed managers.

Matsuno Inc. Idol Agency located in Tokyo, Japan is where you work.
You manage three idols: Kaiba Aoi, Chigusa Iki, and Enatsu Mari.

Below you’ll find a link to the wiki with all the mechanics, character sheets, and more.

Note: I am aware that we voted to spend some time in the music store, but I’m so horribly stuck on AI image generation that I need to move past the store bit or I’ll waste another day before I put up the thread.

You open the door and return the little wave of the cashier.
Ordinarily you would stop by the counter for a short chat since it’s been a while since you’ve last been here, but a set of other customers seem to be vying for her attention.

With a brief bob of the head, you simply decide to beeline for the j-rock section, but not before glancing into the aisle quickly to ensure you don’t spot any familiar faces.

Relief. Nobody you recognize.

You check out the new albums and manage to find the album you’ve been looking for, purchase it, and call it a day.
The last thing to do before you can fully enjoy the remainder of your weekend is deliver the groceries you’ve bought to Kitabayashi’s house.

After a little detour you arrive at Kitabayashi’s door and hand over the groceries.
>>
>>5677924

“Oh, Miho,” says Kitabayashi with a smile, “Thanks, but I buy my own groceries, y’know?”

“Sure, but you’re already taking care of Kaiba-san for me, I didn’t want you to shoulder double the food cost and all that,” you say, “I checked in with Kaiba’s dietician from work, everything in her diet should be in there.”

Kitabayashi looks alarmed for a moment, “Ah… Of course, she has a diet, haha,” she says, “Active idol, I mean, it’s a given.”

You squint a little, “Yui-chan…”

“Just a small bucket of ice cream!” she says defensively, “To celebrate her moving in! She had it rough, y’know?”

The comment reminds you of the fortune reading from earlier that day.
You swivel left and right in an effort to look over Kitabayashi’s shoulder and peek into the house, “How’s Kaiba-san doing?” you ask.

“Still asleep,” replies Kitabayashi.

Eh? It’s mid-afternoon.

Then again, it must’ve been like getting home after a long vacation for her – finally able to get some long-needed rest without any questions or concerns.

“I see,” you say, then hesitate, “…Tell me if anything strange happens, alright?”

Kitabayashi raises an eyebrow, “Sure?” she says, “Are you expecting strange things to happen?”

“Ah, well, not really,” you say.

“Miho…” says Kitabayashi with soft disappointment, “Really? You think that level of secrecy works against me? I’ve known you for years. What’s this about?”

There’s not a chance that you’ll confess that the random fortune told by a teenage mystic has you on edge.

“She’s just had a harsh time, that’s all,” you say.

“Fine, keep your secrets,” says Kitabayashi, “Don’t you wanna come in? Say hi?”

You hold up your hands defensively, “No, no,” you say, “I saw her yesterday and I see her every day at work. I’m still her boss, she should be able to have some time away from me. So she can relax.”

“Alright,” says Kitabayashi with a shrug, “You’re welcome anytime.”

You nod, “Thanks again, Kitabayashi.”

“Nothing’s free, girlie,” says Kitabayashi with a smug grin, “You owe me and I’ve already got some plans how to use that favour.”

As you open your mouth to speak, Kitabayashi interrupts.
>>
>>5677925

“It’s a surprise,” she says, winking.

You sigh, then smile back, “Fine,” you say, “Just don’t get me in any trouble.”
“I should probably get going,” you add, “See you on Monday.”

As you turn to leave you make it only a few steps before turning back, “Send me a message if anything happens, okay? Just anything strange. Anything at all.”

“Jeesh, Miho,” says Kitabayashi, amused, “Calm down. She’s fine.”

“Okay,” you say, turn around, then turn back, “…anything odd, just tell me…”

“Bye, bye, mother hen,” says Kitabayashi, as she gradually closes the door, “I’ll take good care of your little girl!”

Geh.

You didn’t mean it like that.

Back in your car you take a deep breath, then sigh. It’s time to forgot about work for a bit and just relax.

A new week awaits.

Blink twice and the weekend has gone by, per usual.
At least you managed to relax knowing that Kaiba is in good hands.

It’s another warm summer day and you’re sitting in your kitchen, enjoying a small breakfast.
As you swipe through the calendar to see what tasks await you at work – you spot something else.

Today’s Kitabayashi’s birthday.

If memory serves, then she’ll be turning twenty-six today.
Yui has been a great help these past weeks and you owe her in more ways than one.
The least you can do is celebrate her birthday.

However, you’re not really certain how you plan to celebrate it just yet.
At her home with friends? Dining at some restaurant? Dancing the night away at a club?
You decide to keep the birthday in mind and hope that ideas will come to you.

Breakfast finished, you leave home and set off towards the office in your trusty Renault Twingo.

Once there it’s time to fill the schedules of your idols.
Although you understand the importance of nurturing your idols, you can’t help but keep a wary eye on your budget which has been slowly sliding down over the past few months.
Some financial breathing room would be a nice thing to have before you start investing into your idols.

The door clicks open and Matsui bows in, “Good morning, Nagata-san,” she says.
Wearing a pressed blue suit with tie, her hair in a single, short braid swung over her shoulder, and carrying her clipboard, as always, to make note of this week’s plans.

“Good morning,” you reply, smiling.

Matsui tilts her head, “You seem in a good mood,” she says, “Had a nice weekend?”

Did you?

You’ve had plenty of worries this past week, but most of them have disappeared.
Kaiba’s housing situation is being taken care of, according to a fortune reading the concerns you had about your love life are unfounded as long as you put in the effort, and two of your idols are about to debut this week after both successfully completing their first jobs.

It seems silly to get chipper about the contents of a fortune reading, but you’re not about to sabotage your own happiness by overanalysing those thoughts.

“In a way,” you say vaguely, “How about you?”

“Same as always,” says Matsui, then goes right back to business, “Have you given any thought on how you’d like to debut your new idols?”

“I’m still thinking about it,” you say, “I’m planning on sending all the girls out on jobs this week, we’ll brainstorm ideas on the debut while they’re busy on those.”

“Very well,” replies Matsui, tucking her clipboard under an arm, “Short meeting then. I’ll get you a list of jobs.”

“Thank you, Matsui-san,” you say.

Matsui departs, then returns half an hour later with a list of jobs.

Very high DCs remaining for a character that doesn't have anything above 50 - maybe we (and by extension, I) should've voted for some training cuz the rolls will be hard for her. The same applies to Chigusa somewhat.

Low DC for a stat she has not a lot of potential on. Also, its a virtuous company (and the payment is good) so why not.

Your brow furrows as you read over the various jobs.
Kaiba could really, really use a win at this point.
If she would fail another job, then there’d be absolutely nothing left of her self-esteem.

The job for Yoshikawa Sailing seems like a decent fit.
Not too stressful and they’re asking for a skill that Kaiba is fairly proficient in.

“Let’s send Kaiba on the acting job by Yoshikawa Sailing,” you say to Matsui, “It’s low-risk for her and the change of scenery will probably do her some good – get away from the city for a bit.”

“Noted,” says Matsui, “How about the other two?”

“We’ll send Chigusa Iki to the reality show ‘One-day Marriage’,” you reply.

Shows like ‘One-day Marriage’ are reality shows in name only, most of it is loosely scripted.
Success in the show largely hinges on whether or not your personality appeals to the audience, so Chigusa should be fine as long as she isn’t forced to improvise as she isn’t much of a natural actor that can bounce-off whatever hints the fellow participants are putting out.

She probably wouldn’t notice those hints in the first place.

“Enatsu Mari…” you say, sliding your gaze over the sheet of jobs, “We’ll send her to the in-house dancing experiment by Kyoto Animation. It probably won’t result in much visible publicity, but these kinds of things are a perfect networking opportunity.”

“Thinking ahead,” says Matsui, somewhat impressed.

“Matsui-san, I am a professional idol manager,” you say somewhat smugly.
Perhaps you’re allowing your good mood to get the better of you.

“Very well, I’ll contact the respective companies,” says Matsui, scribbling down some final notes, “Let me know when you’ve decide on a plan for Chigusa’s and Enatsu’s debut.”

With a shallow bow, Matsui returns back to work.

Their idol debut, huh?
That’s certainly something to consider.

Chigusa’s chosen idol persona is that of a ‘Stern childhood friend' and Enatsu’s persona is almost identical to her own a ‘Sporty, fun-loving girl’.

Ideally, you’d debut idols in a way that firmly imprints their persona in people’s minds.
There’s more to an idol than their persona, but in most cases the persona serves as a first impression.
Somebody on the lookout for an idol similar to Watase Yoko is probably not going to be interested in Enatsu Mari’s fun-loving idol persona.
>>
>>5679068

Individual debuts are the norm, but you could also debut an idol as a pairing.
You could even debut an idol group if you wanted, which has its own perks and cons.

An idol group often outlives the idols within it.
World-famous idol group AKB48 is constantly adding and retiring idols within the group.

An idol group essentially serves as its own brand and takes on a life of its own.
Scandals affecting idols within the group hurt everyone involved in the group, but success is equally enjoyed by all.

Newer idols that enter a famous group can get carried to stardom through the power of the group alone.
They themselves might be unknown, but being involved with a famous group will have companies throwing jobs at them left and right.
Even the most recent addition to a group is always at least as famous as the group itself.

There is no idol more important to a group than its headliner, the face of the group.
The person that immediately springs to mind when fans mention the group by name.
A talented headliner can carry all other idols to a level of fame normally unreachable for them.

The beating heart of your dazzling idol group.

Nevertheless, there are also cases where a single idol is so instrumental to the success of the group that the retirement of said idol is a death sentence to the group.
Without that idol the group doesn’t have the necessary skills to succeed at the jobs associated with its fame and slowly withers away into obscurity.

Being the headliner is an envied position that comes with a lot of stress.
Matsui Tomo mentioned back when you went out drinking alongside her and Kitabayashi that Kitabayashi was being prepped to be the headliner for a group, but caved to the pressure before it ever took off.

However, for those that have the talent, willpower, and skill, being a headliner is a one-way ticket to stardom.
They gain fame faster, are paid far more when participating in individual jobs, and are in way higher demand than their peers.

Those are definite perks, but you have to remember that your chosen headliner might be unable to handle it -- like Kitabayashi who subsequently retired.
Closely monitoring your headliner’s stress-levels will help them avoid burn-out, but in the end, you need somebody that can cope with high stress levels to begin with.

The headliner will either have your idols reach for the stars or bury the others alongside them when the headliner crashes and burns.

Summary on Idol Groups
>Perk: An individual idol within a group can never have a lower fame level than the group itself.
>Perk: Idol groups have access to special jobs unavailable to individual idols
>Perk: If the group gains fame, all idols enjoy the success
>Perk: You can pick an idol as a headliner, gaining them various perks

>Con: Failure by an individual within the group might reflect badly on the rest
>Con: When a scandal hurts the group, all idols suffer for it
>Con: The high stakes group-based environment might result in competition or bullying
>Con: If the group fails to meet expectations and disbands, all idols lose fame
>Con: Headliners are more prone to high stress and retirement

Note: If you choose to start a group then there’ll be follow-up questions like “Who is in the group?” and “What kind of group is it?”
An idol group featuring dancers and singers is the norm, but (just as you did with the livestream concept), you can start a group for anything so long as it revolves around entertainment.

I will not abandon this plan. The group can be centered around dancing. Mari can be the headliner - her dancing potential is the highest and she has a good support system in her family. Though I'd prefer going as a duo without a headliner.

Not yet. We still have to hit some Rank-C idols to even start thinking about an idol group. The overall potential stats of the girls aren't good enough to compliment themselves and Mari would be too much of a carrier, the other two (or just Chigusa if this were a duo) wouldn't add much to the group on the long term.

As ugly as it is, it wouldn't work, not without a good headliner.
What I think would be the best right now is try and get kaiba somewhere else, and try and get a new fresh idol that can handle it, and then we can do a group with all 3 of them.

Although running an idol group has its upsides, you don’t really think any of your idols are ready for such a demanding task.

Considering she just recovered from a stretch of homelessness, Kaiba Aoi isn’t in the right frame of mind to take on such a burden.
Your other idols have only completed a single job and lack experience.

It might be best to keep things simple for now.
You can always start an idol group at a later time.

Nothing’s simpler than a plain idol announcement on the company’s Instagram page and while it gets the job done, it doesn’t provide any extra merits.

Marketing mentioned that Kaiba’s live vlog is starting back up again this week.
Perhaps you can talk to Kaiba and ask if she can do a sort of collaboration with one of your idols.
You could get marketing involved and make it a special event: the announcement of a new streaming idol.

The live vlog has worked well for Kaiba, but you’re not sure if Enatsu Mari and Chigusa Iki are suited to sit in a small room and stare at a screen the entire day.

Then again, they don’t have to. Do they?
There’s plenty of daily vlogs out there with people travelling, visiting stores, engaging in extreme sports, and plenty of other activities that they showcase.

Live vlogging has kind of been Kaiba’s “thing”, but you know it has great potential.
Hundreds of people showed up to the handshaking event despite Kaiba only have a handful of jobs under her belt.
You could make a name as a manager that dedicates herself to idols that livestream, each with their own stream, but with the occasional collaboration between them.
>>
>>5680077

However, what would the new idols even vlog about?
Perhaps you can draw inspiration from the jobs they completed last week?
That’d work surprisingly well for Enatsu Mari, but a little less so for Chigusa Iki.

According to her datasheet, Enatsu Mari has great potential in both her dancing ability and her appearance.
Meanwhile, Chigusa Iki is more of an all-rounder, but her highest potential is also in her looks and dancing ability.

Enatsu Mari could easily double-down on her sporty idol persona and become a live streamer that dedicates herself to sports and fitness.
With the release of the “Genki Clothing” shoot around the corner, it’d be a great fit.
A dedicated stream for dance and fashion wouldn’t be a bad choice either, that would play to her strengths, but isn’t as good a fit for her idol persona.

Chigusa Iki has mentioned at several points that she takes meticulous care of her body.
For example, she mentioned during the initial interview that she exercises specific muscles to increase her appeal as an idol while following a very strict diet.
Something like a streamer dedicated to cooking and general health wouldn’t be a bad choice.
It’d fit moderately well with her “Strict Childhood Friend” persona as such a person would want their friends to be healthy.

She could even wear cosplay during her debut stream to pull strength from the Isekai Cosplay photoshoot that’ll release soon.
Though you’re not sure how happy she’d be with that.

Alternatively, you could simply have the live vlog remain something exclusive to Kaiba and have both the newer idols take the more traditional idol route.

A proper debut matters.
If things go well, they’ll might even get some extra fame out of it.*

If either or both idols go with the livestream route, then I’ll try to make the streaming a more prominent part of the quest rather than background stuff. You’d get the option to pick jobs that centre around the livestream, like endorsing a product or promoting an activity on stream.

*Yes, I know Kaiba didn’t get to enjoy this same luxury, but I feel like I’ve spent so much time during the “Hot spring” event saying how important a proper debut is that I want it to be a bit more impactful.

They can collab on videos about diet and exercise, and show off different sorts of fashion and approaches! if Kaiba ever gets in on it, perhaps it can be with her trying out different routines they suggest to inspiring (or comical) effect? Could be a cute group dynamic to sell them all as an odd band of mismatched friends, which could nicely segue into an idol group down the line.

Wait, are we actually just going to make them all into streamers? I feel like Kaiba will feel like we're talking her unique schtick and letting other girls profit from it. What happens to proper idols?
>>

Radio shows and TV appearances are a fairly standard way for people to get a dose of their favourite idol, but a livestream where they can see them on the daily is fairly novel.

If Kaiba’s live vlogging was an experiment, then you can safely say that it was a success.
It’s time to see how far you can take this.

Enatsu Mari will debut as a sport and fitness streamer.
A channel where she visits various places, sports, and stores.

If she gets popular enough, then there’s even a chance proper sport associations might pay her big money to highlight and endorse their sport on her channel in an effort to draw new members.
Stores might hire her to showcase new equipment.

And all of that is done while Enatsu Mari engages in what she probably loves most.
A ton of highly varied, athletic activities – she’ll have loads of fun.

Chigusa Iki will perform in a health and cooking stream.
Her idol persona as a “Strict Childhood Friend” lends itself well to a show where the character fusses over the health of their viewers.
Sit up straight! No slouching! Are you drinking plenty of water?

Although people might tire of getting called out like that constantly.

You looks left and right, then write a small note to ensure viewer retention – it’ll all be done in cosplay.
Chigusa probably isn’t going to like it, but she’s a professional idol, right?
Those dancers and singers she used to see on TV growing up must’ve worn costumes as well.

Perhaps you can get Isekai Cosplay to sponsor the stream.
Or maybe that one Maid Café you saw a few jobs for.

With these ideas solidified, you send a message to Matsui Tomo to get some feedback.
She says doubling down on the novel streaming part is a wise decision, but that you should probably be a bit more hands-on if it’s going to take up such a large part of your idols' time.

Matsui sends some messages to marketing since they seem to work closely with Kaiba on her streams.
Marketing will then work out the details and get other departments involved to get everything set up.

You sigh loudly in the privacy of your office.
That’s one less thing to worry about.

Having picked the jobs for this week and decided on how your new idols will debut, there’s only one decision left to make before you can get to work – Kitabayashi’s birthday.
Not really a work decision in the strictest sense, but an important and short-notice one.

After all, her birthday is today.
>>
>>5680662

A surprise party at her home is a safe bet and you can chat, celebrate, and drink in the privacy of her own apartment.

However, Kitabayashi did mention she already knew a way to utilize the favour you owe her.
It could be that she already has some plans of her own.
Perhaps it’s best to avoid any surprises and simply call her, congratulate her, and ask if there’s somewhere she’d like to go.
Leaving things to her probably means you're in for a wild time, but you could indulge her -- it's her birthday after all.

You could also opt for the usual work-friend routine where you take some coworkers and go out drinking after work and celebrate at a nomikai.

As you glance over your agenda, you do notice it’s become a bit crowded after including all the new job events.
Just as you’re thinking it, more meeting requests suddenly pop-up in your calendar from marketing to discuss the specifics of your idols' debut.
It’s Kitabayashi’s birthday and you owe her a lot, but mid-week celebration that’ll likely involve drinks might not be the best idea.
Enatsu Mari and Chigusa Iki might not invest as much time into streaming as Kaiba does, but they'll still need plenty of help.
Perhaps you can put off the celebration until the weekend?

A surprise party at her home is probably the best course of action.
Since Kaiba is currently staying at Kitabayashi’s place, you can work with her to try and get Kitabayashi out of the house.
She can make up an excuse like wanting to go to the store to so you can sneak in and set things up.

You send a quick message to Kaiba Aoi to meet you in your office since you have some other stuff to talk about beside the birthday party anyway.
Right before you’re about to hit send you stop, think, and make sure to include the reason for the chat to avoid any unnecessary anxiety.

She arrives in your office before long.

“A surprise birthday party?” says Kaiba as she pokes her head into the room.

Seeing Kaiba again, you can’t help but smile.
It’s obvious that Kitabayashi has been helping Kaiba out with her clothing and make-up.
Kitabayashi called you a mother then, but it’s abundantly clear that she’s been fawning over Kaiba herself.

“Yes,” you say, “Take a seat, but we have to discuss the debut of Enatsu Mari and Chigusa Iki first.”

“I did see the calendar that it was Yui-chan’s birthday today, but I felt awkward celebrating it since I haven’t known her that long…” says Kaiba, “But I do want to do something nice for her, she’s been helping me a lot…”
She then notices your expression at the casual way she refers to Kitabayashi, “She told me to call her that. I didn’t want to at first, but she got mad that I kept being so formal with her…”

That sounds like Yui-chan, yeah.

“Fine, we’ll discuss the birthday party first,” you say, “Do you happen to know if she had anything planned yet?”

“She does,” says Kaiba, “But she didn’t say what. I asked, but she would just … sort of.. smirk?… and then go 'Fufufu~'. She did say it involved you, manager-san, but also that I was too young to join… “

Uwaa… You might’ve just escaped a very dangerous night.
Considering that Kaiba-san was too young it must’ve involved some heavy drinking.
The best thing to do is pre-emptively cancel on Kitabayashi with an excuse.
>>
>>5681950

“I see,” you say, trying to hide your concern as you wonder what she might’ve had planned, “Do you have a key to the apartment?”

Kaiba nods, “I do, she gave me a spare key shortly after I moved in. So I could get in if she had to work late.”

“Good,” you say. That solves one thing. “I need you to help me, Aoi-chan,” you say, “Can you think of a reason to get Kitabayashi out of the house for a while? So I can put up some decorations?”

“Ehh…” says Kaiba, nervously considering her options, “I don’t know…”

“Just lure her to a small café or something to celebrate her birthday, I’ll need like thirty minutes,” you say, “Some grocery shopping. Browsing clothes at the mall. Anything will do.”

Kaiba nods, somewhat determined, “I’ll try,” she says.

You fold your arms as you think.

Considering that Kitabayashi wanted to go somewhere with you today then that must’ve meant she didn’t have any other plans.
If she has any friends other than you, then it seems she was prepared to celebrate her birthday with those friends some other day – possibly the weekend.
This works out great for you, because you would’ve had to track down and contact all those potential friends.

Now you can just have a small gathering at her apartment with some people you both know.
At least that reduces the chances of things getting out of hand.

You pull up a word processor on your computer to compile a guest list when, suddenly, your phone rings.

After glancing at the screen, you look towards Kaiba. “It’s Yui-chan,” you say, “I’ll put it on speaker, but don’t say anything, alright?”

Kaiba nods.

“Hey, hey~” says the voice of Kitabayashi, “Miho, how are you?”

“Hello, Yui-chan,” you say, leaning in slightly towards the phone, “I’m good. Happy Birthday.”

On the other side of the phone Kitabayashi squeals with delight.
“Eehh, you remembered,” she says, her voice somewhat giddy, “Thank you!”

“Of course, I did,” you say, giving Kaiba a thumbs-up, “I don’t wanna cut our chat short, Yui-chan, but I have a meeting soon. Can I ask why you called?”

“Fufufu~” says the voice of Kitabayashi, trying her hardest to sound menacing.

Kaiba silently points at the phone, then nods.
That’s the noise she made, officer.
>>
>>5681951

“I’ve come to call in my favour… Tonight. You and I,” says Kitabayashi.

Kaiba looks somewhat taken aback and eyes you suspiciously.

You dismiss her concerns with a shake of the head and a wave before turning your attention back to Kitabayashi.

“Eh? Tonight? Sorry, can’t make that. I’ve got some other plans,” you reply casually.
Those other plans being organizing Kitabayashi’s surprise party.

There’s a long moment of quiet.

“….Ah, I see,” says the voice of Kitabayashi carrying obvious disappointment, “I mean, I should’ve asked earlier…”

“I’m sorry, Yui-chan,” you say, “I hope you didn’t make reservations or anything?”

“Hmm… Ah, no. No, not really,” replies the voice of Kitabayashi, “Don’t worry about it.”

“We can go some other time, okay?” you say, “But I have to hang up now.”

“Sounds good,” says Kitabayashi, forcing some cheer in her voice, “Talk to you later~”

Click.

Kaiba gives you a look. ”She sounded sad,” she says.

“I know,” you reply, “She probably wanted to go out drinking.”

Kaiba tilts her head, “I didn’t know Yui-chan drank.”

Oi. Oi.

You remember Kitabayashi saying she should stock the fridge with something other than beer in preparation of Kaiba’s arrival.
Did she clear it all out and stop drinking at home completely?

“Well, sometimes,” you say, trying not to destroy Yui’s carefully crafted image, “What’s she like at home?”

Kaiba thinks for a moment, pressing a finger to her lip as she does so.
That’s one of Kitabayashi’s mannerisms. It’s like when she copied EmikoDesu55’s speech patterns.
Does Kaiba unconsciously copy others?

”Very… caring?” says Kaiba.

Hah?

Miss nothing-but-beer-in-the-fridge?
Madam spend-all-her-money-on-host-clubs?
The same Kitabayashi that survives on take-out meals?

“She makes breakfast in the morning and dinner at night,” says Kaiba, “She helps me with my hair, clothes, and make-up… I tell her she doesn’t need to, that I can help out as well, but she always refuses saying she likes doing it…”

You lean back in your chair, dumb founded.
It seems that when it’s just her, Kitabayashi is content to subsist on the bare minimum, but when there’s somebody else to care for then she goes above and beyond.

It’s conflicting.
>>
>>5681952

On the one hand it feels bad that Kitabayashi puts in all this effort to accommodate Kaiba, but at the same time …. it’s probably a good thing for her, right?
Ordering take-out and drinking every day couldn’t have been healthy for Kitabayashi.
Still, it has you wondering which lifestyle was preferable to her.

“We’ve only known each other for a short while, but she’s very kind and easy to get along with,” says Kaiba, then balls up her fists, “That’s why I was so happy you asked me to help you with the party. Yui-chan does so much for me, I want to return the favour somehow!”

“Great,” you say, pulling up the guest list again, “I can manage to get some things for the party. Decorations, snacks, and those sorts of things. As you’ve lived with Yui-chan for a few days, does she mention any people from work at all? I don’t want to accidentally invite somebody she doesn’t like…”

Kaiba thinks for a moment, “She mentions Mori Kotone sometimes…”

Ah. Mori Kotone. The other HR worker.

The Enemy.

“Good things or…?” you say, doubting that.

“Mostly complaints, how she already works part-time and got pregnant on top of that,” says Kaiba somewhat apologetically, “…Is this Mori-san a bad person?”

“No. Not, really,” you say, scratching a cheek, “I’ll explain some other time, when Mori-san gets back to the office.”
“So, who do invite?” you say.

“…Matsui-san?” says Kaiba.

They used to work together, but as far as you know they don’t really talk outside of work.
As their relationship is mostly professional, formality would probably slip into the celebration.
Besides, it seems like Kitabayashi has made it a point not to drink in front of Kaiba so you can’t expect booze to loosen them up either.

Kitabayashi used to be an idol, right?
She’s nice, supportive, and a great friend!
This sort of list should’ve been one where you have to cross people out instead because of capacity issues.

You tap the desk a few times with a finger.
Maybe it’s a good idea to involve some of those non-work friends.

“Anyone else she mentions?” you ask, “From outside of work?”

Kaiba shakes her head, “Not really… manager-san, I’ve only been living with her for a few days. I wish I could be of more help, but I really don’t know her all that well yet.”

“Yes, of course. I’m sorry, Aoi-chan. I just…” you say.
>>
>>5681954

You just don’t know Kitabayashi that well either.
It was only recently that you found out that Kitabayashi isn’t even her original name.
According to Matsui-san there was entire other life she has closed the door on.

A few weeks ago, when you dragged her into her apartment after a night of drinking, you remember a large wall of her apartment being entirely covered with photos of her time as an idol.
Dozens of photos featuring her standing next to all these people in the industry.
Dozens of photos which she then hid away when Kaiba moved in.

All these people she either willingly, or was forced to, cut contact with.

It’s clear that she’s trying to hide her previous life from you and you might’ve never found out if Matsui hadn’t revealed it during that karaoke night as Kitabayashi hid it from you for years.

Which begs the question – Why did Matsui reveal it to you?
She must’ve known how important it was to Kitabayashi that that secret was kept.

“…anger-san,” says Kaiba, “Hello?”

“Eh? Ah, sorry, Aoi-chan, did you say something?” you say, returning to reality.

“I mean, we can just celebrate with the three of us? No?” she says, carefully.

“Well…” you begin, then pause. You can. You totally can.
Kitabayashi was satisfied with just heading off with you somewhere.
For some reason you felt a need to throw Kitabayashi this big party, but that was never what she wanted to begin with.

“You’re right, Aoi-chan,” you say, “I’ve been overthinking things… I just wanted to throw Yui-chan the big party she deserves, but she probably doesn’t want that anyway…”

Should you ask Kitabayashi about this hidden past of her?
You have to assume she hid it for a reason.
It’ll have to wait.

You lean from side to side in your chair, “Hmmm, I just feel like I should be something more…” you say, “Maybe we can include something that Yui-chan likes. Like a certain cake or snack… A movie, I don’t know… Just something extra…”

Suddenly, Kaiba’s face flushes, and she looks away. ”Well,” says Kaiba quietly, “There is something…”
>>
>>5681955

“…What is it…?” you ask.

“Last weekend… No, I shouldn’t say…” says Kaiba, hiding her face between her hands.

“Aoi-chan, please. You want to make it a great party for Yui-chan as well, right?” you ask, “I need ideas. Any ideas!”

Struggling to retain eye-contract, Kaiba speaks, “You know how last week… Chigusa-san did a photoshoot with, like, cosplay… and, well, it seems like some people in the office got the images for internal approval and they got shared… Yui-chan seemed to really like those…”

“Are you suggesting that I…” you ask carefully.

Kaiba nods severely, “…She’ll never forget…”

The cat idea feels wrong to me. Not only have we already rejected Yui and the weird state that is Kabia's preference due to Emilie, but it feels like sending a mixed signal, like we're dressing up as eye candy for a friend we know is attracted to us, but we rejected.

It’s true. She’ll probably never forget.
She probably won’t ever stop reminding you either.

But…

You wouldn’t ever admit this, but…

You’ve always kind of wanted to dress up like that.
Trying on clothes is fun and dressing like that always seemed a lot of fun, too.
Back when Chigusa Iki was doing the cosplay shop you browsed some of the shelves while you waited and wanted to try it.

You didn’t, of course.
You were there as her manager – a professional.
A girl in her late twenties like you shouldn’t do such a thing, right?

Such luxuries are reserved for teenagers and college girls.
Not that you ever indulged that curiosity when you were that age.

But now you have an excuse…

“I suppose it would make it a party to remember…” you say.

“If you don’t want to, then we can think of something else…” replies Kaiba.

“No!” you say, then cough into your fist, “Ehum. No, it’s fine. It can’t be helped. After everything Yui-chan has done for us, this much is fine…”

Kaiba stares at you in silence. “…You want to, don’t you?” she says.

Well, yes, but you don’t want to get called out on it!
“Eh? I mean, it’s for Yui-cha--” you try, but then Kaiba interrupts you.

“…M-me too…” she says, as she hides her face, “When other girls dressed at things like the cultural event during high school, I also wanted to, but I…”
She then goes quiet.

The silence lingers.

“…Dressing up seems fun, doesn’t it?” you say in an effort to break the silence.

Kaiba nods solemnly, “I want to try…”

Seems like Kaiba is a lot braver than you are, being able to voice her desires like that.
It brings to mind your very first conversation with her, so many months ago.
She said she wasn’t happy being her shy and reserved self, that she could be more like other people and unapologetically have fun.

Despite being Kaiba’s manager and being almost a decade older than her, it seems like you can learn a thing or two from her, too.

Youth is fleeting. You have to enjoy it while it lasts.
It’d be terrible to waste those years sitting idle because you’re afraid of what others may think.

If only you had been able to shoulder past that mental block when you were younger.
You might’ve been able to actually enjoy your youth instead of sitting inside and judging others.

But you’re not going to get those years back.
There’s only the here and now.

“Let’s do it,” you say, “It’ll be fun.”
That’s all the justification you need.
>>
>>5682486

The fact that you’ll dress up in private setting does make it a little easier though.
You should probably get some things for Kitabayashi as well.
It’s her birthday after all, she should be able to have fun, too.

“We’ll pop by Isekai Cosplay after work to get some things,” you say.

Kaiba nods eagerly, “I’m looking forward to it!”
It seems like having you in her corner has allowed Kaiba to be a little more honest with herself.

That matter settled, you continue on to share what you have planned for the debut of Enatsu Mari and Chigusa Iki.
Any concerns that Kaiba feels threatened by others entering her niche are swept aside, if anything she seems happy to have people to talk with about streaming.
However, you still press that it’s mostly their debut that’ll be streamed live.
Whether or not it’ll be a reoccurring thing for them will depend on the success of the streams.

Finally, you mention that Kaiba will be sent out to Yoshikawa Sailing for this week’s job to star in a short commercial to promote sailing.

She looks uncomfortable for a moment and then asks if she’ll have to be in a bikini for such a shoot.

Luckily, you can mention that Yoshikawa Sailing is a company with a decent standing, so you doubt something like that will be necessary for a promotion video of a sport like that.

With that, the meeting is over and Kaiba leaves to attend the meeting with marketing on her “comeback” stream.

A short while later receive word from Matsui that all the jobs of your respective idols have been scheduled and noted down on your weekly schedule.

-------

All events will be summarized by default, but the ones with the most support will be written out, get some art, and you might be able to micromanage them a bit.
Previously I tried to hard-cap it at one or two, but you can vote for as many as you want now. I'll figure it out.

If I may put forth a proposal, let's target Chigusa's stream towards total cooking noobs, the kind that get stumped by an instruction to "salt to taste". There's definitely a lot of cooking videos designed for more experienced cooks, but incompetent NEETs are probably an untapped audience in this respect.

I'm actually really interested on how they're gonna promote sailing of all things - on the modern age, you don't really have a default image of a sailor since they mostly move around like construction workers. If they aren't gonna shove a bikini on Kaiba then I don't really have an idea on what they might do honestly

Non-sequitur logic.

For example, Yui is a wagie and yet survived on take-out meals (she is cooking now that Kaiba is living with her but we don't know the extent of her abilities). I think that cooking is both a hobby that requires a good time investment and a innate talent that some might not have at the beginning, it has nothing to do if a person is or isnt a NEET imo
>>
>>5683056
But NEETs and other oddballs are the sort who are likely to beocme unheahily (profitably, for us) attached to a cosplay catgirl cooking streamer.

With the schedule set, it’s time to get to work.
You call Enatsu Mari and Chigusa Iki into your office and relay the plans for this week.
They’ll both have jobs coming up in the days to come with their formal idol debut at the end of the week.

You spend the remainder of the day sending back and forth emails with various departments.

Marketing is going to ensure there’ll be proper promotion for the new arrival of two “Mystery Idols” and have publicized the time of the respective debut streams.

Your emails are forwarded, replied to, CC’d , and end up reaching all corners of the company.

In one of your emails, you mention that they could contact Isekai Cosplay for some possible cosplay outfits for Chigusa to wear during the stream, which is met with loud complaints by the in-house stylists and costume designers.
There’s no chance in hell they will outsource such an interesting job to a third party.
It’s short notice, but Chigusa Iki’s outfit will be made by them from scratch.

One of the higher-ups, a production designer, with contacts at a recording studio pulls some strings on your behalf.
Chigusa’s show, which was supposed to be a simple camera recording a girl working in a kitchen, will end up being recorded in a studio setting where they will build up a set featuring a kitchen and will be shot by proper studio cameras.

A different employee mentions how Enatsu Mari’s debut should be recorded outside somewhere.
Perhaps some kind of sports festival or open tournament. Some sport she can promote or participate in.
If Kaiba Aoi’s entire show happens indoors, then Enatsu’s should be the opposite of that.

Being the original sender, you end up being CC’d in all their replies.

“I suppose people will listen to anything as long as it’s being told by a cute girl…”

“Kukuku, teaching them about health while feeding them sugar~”

“Chigusa-san’s file states she has a fairly plain idol-persona. Isn’t regular, fashionable clothing with an apron fine?”

“IT’S A COSPLAY SHOOT. A COSPLAY SHOOT. THIS IS LIKE A FREE-PASS!!!”

“No. It’s a debut. People will expect certain features to remain the same. It should suit her idol persona.”

“HAH? POOR TASTE!!!! WHY DON’T YOU JUST SLAP CAT EARS ON HER AND BE DONE WITH IT???”

“No, she just had a shoot featuring those. It’s too soon.”

“I WAS BEING S A R C A S T I C”

“I suppose this is some kind of health-promotion duo? It can work.”

People are getting really into this.

After replying to every mail you’re mentioned in, you’re in need of a breather.
Some coffee and a snack will do you good, so you make your way tot he break room.
When you arrive in the break room you spot someone there you haven’t seen in a long time.

“Tachibana-san,” you say, “How have you been?”

The older gentleman in the overcoat looks up from his cup of coffee.
A cane rests against the counter next to him.
“Nagata-san,” he says, “It’s been a while. Things have been kind of quiet for me lately, so I figured I’d come and bother people at the office.”

Previously a private investigator, Tachibana Ichiro now works as a talent scout at Matsuno Inc.
He’s one of the people responsible for noting down the statistics and observed traits of people coming to auditions.
His job typically keeps him away from the office, so It’s been a long time since you’ve last spoken.

“A welcome break, I’d say,” you reply.

Tachibana sighs, “I guess,” he says, “Still, I get antsy when I’m not doing anything.”
“If I linger for too long, I might end up acting my age,” he adds with a chuckle.

“Well, if that’s the case then I hope they’ll soon be overworking you again!” you say with a playful smile.

The man bellows a hardy chuckle, “If only!” he says, then sighs. He takes a sip from his coffee.
“I heard you’ve been promoted to idol manager,” he says.

You no, “Yeah, this and that happened and I’m in charge of several wonderful idols now,” you say, “Some of the girls working for me right now might even have been screened by you.”
>>
>>5683123

“That so?” he says, “I hope it works out, Nagata-san. You’ve always been a kind girl, but the world of show business can be harsh.”

“I’m working hard, Tachibana-san. Doing the best I can,” you say.

“As you should,” he says, taking another sip of his coffee, “But don’t overwork yourself. Delegate tasks when you should.”

He goes quiet for a moment as he considers something, then seems to make up his mind.
“In fact, as your senior, let me help you a bit,” he says, “I’ve got some time as I’m not on any assignments right now. Is there anything you’re curious about? I can screen somebody for their potential as an idol or investigate something if you like. Pro bono, of course. I’m not one for office politics or owing favours.”

Tachibana has decades of experience as a private investigator and it allowed him to cultivate an eye for people that he now puts to use as a talent scout.
That being said, his skills as a PI are probably as sharp as ever.

Perhaps there’s a matter you’d like to have investigated?
Or maybe you’ve met some girls you feel may have potential as an idol that he can screen?
As a major agency, Matsuno Inc. mostly does their scouting through large, formal auditions, but a lot of talented individuals may never appear at those.

----------

This prompt will be rather open-ended, but any person or location is a viable option.
I have a lot of stuff to write, so I’m basically hoping this will foster some discussion to buy a bit of time.

The top voted item will be scouted / investigated.

It’s a great offer and you have no reason to turn it down.

“Well,” you say, “I suppose there is something…”
Back when you were dealing with Kaiba’s scandal you had to make some unfavourable deals with various companies for some last-minute damage control.

One of them with a variety show, Cupid-san Shintaro, that was about to have a gossip episode where they would discuss the scandal.
You managed to stop that segment from airing by pledging Enatsu Mari to have a dating episode earing in the near future.

Another deal was with a magazine hoping to trade you one scoop for another, larger one.

“Oh?” says Tachibana, finishing off his coffee as he notices your expression.
“This feels like it could get interesting…” he says.

You look left and right.
This isn’t the kind of conversation you should be having in the break room.

“Let’s discuss it in my office,” you say, gesturing towards a corridor.

Tachibana shrugs and follows.

Once there, you share the details.

Everything Idol is a gossip magazine that bought the details of Kaiba’s scandals from an unknown source, probably EmikoDesu55, and was going to publish a piece that would tear Kaiba apart.
Luckily, Matsui managed to learn of the company’s intentions before they published it and you made a deal with them.

Rather than their previous piece, they would rewrite their article to paint Kaiba as the victim in an unfortunate scenario way beyond her control.
However, they’re expecting that you deliver them a different, even juicier secret in the near future.

You did what you thought was best at the time, but knowing there’s a company out there impatiently waiting for you to deliver it some career-ending gossip is anything but pleasant.

You reveal as much to Tachibana and ask if there’s anything he can do.

“Hmm,” he says, stroking his small beard, “I’ll see what I can find. Do you want me to look for a piece of gossip that’ll satisfy them or would you rather have me find something to threaten them so that they cancel the deal?”

In the first scenario the victim will probably be some unknown idol and her scandal.
If you deliver details about such a scandal on a silver platter, then Everything Idol will shout it from high heaven.

In the latter scenario the victim will be your relationship with Everything Idol.
If Tachibana manages to find something then you’re in the clear for now, but they’re almost certain to hold a grudge and will be difficult to work with in the future.

There's also a small chance that Tachibana finds something so devestating that Everything Idol has no choice but to submit to you.

“I don’t want to make Everything Idol my enemy at this point,” you say, sigh, “If I antagonize them, they might end up publishing every random rumour about my idols just to spite me.”

“More likely than not,” says Tachibana with a shrug, “So, just try and throw the dog a bone?”

“Yes,” you say, with a nod, “Try and find something to get them out of my hair.”

Tachibana takes his cane that had been resting against a nearby counter.
“Will do,” he says, “I’ll be off then. You have a good one, Nagata-san. I’ll get back to you once I find something.”

“Thanks, Tachibana-san. I appreciate it,” you reply.

With that Tachibana leaves and you get your coffee and snack.
It might be a while until Tachibana returns with results.

But he always does.

-----

Once back in your office you carefully navigate your way through the newly arrived emails and impromptu meetings.
Work ends before you know it and there’s a hesitant knock at the door.

After the telling the person to enter, Kaiba Aoi pokes her head in.
She looks nervous, but at the same time a little excited.

“Ah, manager-san,” she says, “Are… are you ready to buy outfits…?”

You nod. “Sure,” you say, “Let me get my purse and we’ll head to Isekai Cosplay.”

And so, the both of you head out.

The plan is simple.

You’ll get cat girl outfits at Isekai Cosplay after which you’ll shop for some groceries and decorations.
Once that’s done, you’ll drop off Kaiba near Kitabayashi’s apartment and wait for the signal that confirms that she managed to get Kitabayashi out of their home.

Then you’ll sneak in using Kaiba’s key and decorate the place, put out snacks, and wear the purchased costume.
>>
>>5685970
-----------

“…This one is fairly popular right now,” says the saleswoman as she holds up a costume with less fabric than a pair of socks.

Kaiba is hiding behind you, blushing fiercely and her face hidden in her hands.

“…Do you maybe have other ones…?” you ask carefully, you glance left and right, “Are we in the right section?”

The costume in front of you is particularly lacking some fabric around the area where the chest would go.
You’re trying to celebrate Kitabayashi’s birthday and would like it if she went on to have many more.
Whatever this woman is trying to sell you might just kill her on the spot.

The saleswoman sighs, “Well, I suppose we have some other stuff,” she says, “But I figured… what’s the occasion again?”

“A themed birthday party,” you say flatly.

The saleswoman winces, then sucks in air through clenched teeth, “Ehhh, well, this way then…” she says, then seems to reconsider, “…we have this other kind which has parts that tear-off…?”

“Just regular cosplay, please,” you say, feeling a blush come on.

“Ah, sure,” says the saleswoman, “Sometimes I forget that people buy this kind of stuff for other occasions as well…”

Well, suppose you now know what this random store employee gets up to in her spare time.
Eventually, after only offering you a handful of questionable items, she guides you to the other side of the store.

It’s a good thing you and Kaiba came here together.
If Kaiba had been by herself, she might’ve been pressured into getting the more extreme versions.

In the end you buy three simple sets of cat ears and some tails with a clip-on that you can attach to your pants or skirt.
The quality is nothing like what Chigusa has been wearing during the photoshoot, but the price-tag on that kind of stuff is a bit excessive for a gag gift.

Just as you prepare to leave, the man you recognize as the owner stops you at the exit.
You worked with him last week during Chigusa’s shoot and know that he’s, to put mildly, a big fan of cat girls.
Though you didn’t speak much, you did learn that his name is Sakimoto Tetsuyuki.

“Nagata-san,” says Sakimoto, smirking, “I don’t fault you for developing an interest to this sort of thing. In fact, I applaud it. One might even say it was inevitable.”
He chuckles quietly to himself, then holds out a shopping bag, “On the house,” he says, “From one connoisseur to another…”

The fact that this man spied on you while you were shopping for embarrassing outfits is a bit…
However, he’s a business relation.
>>
>>5685971

If Chigusa’s cooking and cosplay streams are going to be a regular thing, then you can’t afford to offend him.
You gratefully accept the bag with both hands, and bow, “Thank you, Sakimoto-san,” you say.
Truth be told, you’re curious about what kind of gift a man like him would bestow on you but opening it in front of him would be terribly rude.

“Last week’s photoshoot was very entertaining,” says Sakimoto, offering a shallow bow, “I hope to work with you again.”

You bow again, “Likewise, Sakimoto-san,” you say, then eye the exit, “I apologize, but we should be on our way.”

Sakimoto nods knowingly, “Of course,” he says, then smiles knowingly, “Until next time!”

Ah, the smug smile of a person who thinks they’ve found a kindred spirit…

“Until next time,” you repeat, bob your head as Kaiba does likewise, then leave.

-----

Both you and Kaiba return to the car, where both of you sigh at the same time.

“Manager-san,” begins Kaiba, “…I-is there a hidden meaning behind dressing up for somebody like this?”

There isn’t. Besides, it’s just cat ears and a tail. Small stuff.
This is just a bit of fun around friends. Right?
The interaction with that saleswoman must’ve put some ideas in Kaiba’s head.

“No,” you say, then become unsure, “No… I don’t think so…?”

Kaiba sighs in relief, “That’s alright then… I wasn’t sure how to feel about this for a moment…”

“It’s just cat ears and a clip-on tail,” you say, flashing a reassuring smile, “Just for fun.”

“Yeah, I must’ve been overthinking it,” says Kaiba, then looks towards the gift bag, “What did the owner of the store gift you there at the end?”

“Hmm, not sure,” you say, revealing the contents of the gift bag, then reel back in shock, “Geh!”

A large garment, frilly in all kinds of places.
Stockings and cufflets included.
It’s a black and wite maid uniform.

A small note is included.

“Of all cat girl attire, the maid costume stands at the pinnacle! Awaken, my child!”
It includes a really rough illustration of the owner with a thumbs-up.

Kaiba eyes you uncertainly, “…this seems like a strange gift…”

You nod, “It’s a bit… much…” you say, sliding it back into the bag.

“…Will you wear it?” asks Kaiba, eyeing you uncertainly.

“What!?” you cry, “No! No… This is…”
There’s no doubt that it’s over the top, but will you ever get another excuse to wear something like this?
>>
>>5685972

You shake your head to clear your thoughts, “We need to get some groceries,” you say, starting the car.

Kaiba nods, going quiet.

After a few minutes of driving, Kaiba slowly speaks up, “Manager-san…” she says.

“Yeah?” you reply, glancing at her direction before returning your eyes to the road.

“I know you and Yui-chan have gone out drinking in the past,” says Kaiba carefully as if she’s speaking about a taboo.

“Sometimes,” you say, “What about it?”

Kaiba revealed earlier today that Kitabayashi has emptied the entire house of alcohol.
In fact, Kaiba wasn’t even aware that Kitabayashi drank.

“I don’t want her to feel like she has to… you know… act different because I’m there…” says Kaiba.

“I’m sure she doesn’t mind,” you say, trying to uphold the virtuous image that Kitabayashi is trying to project.

“Do you think we should get some …drinks for the party?” says Kaiba, then suddenly holds up her hands defensively, “Not for me! For you and Yui-chan. To let Yui-chan know it’s okay… I won’t think any different of her or anything.”

I'll use this time we have to ask what do you guys think, I've been thinking about this and I think we should make some kind of big event for Kaiba (after she has somewhere to live and is not stressed) and let her go, maybe keep her close but not under our management anymore and search for fresh talent. I just think Kaiba doesn't have that much more to offer anymore in terms of growth. For the event I was thinking maybe a small concert with Iki and Mari, since Kaiba's dancing skill isn't that good she could just sing.
>>
>>5688241
I think she will easily serve as a foil for the self improvement schemes that may yet center the personas and vlogs of our other idols, as detailed in >>5680095
>>
>>5688241
We don't have to let Kaiba go to look for fresh talent.
And I want to try and still get her that Bones job. That'd set her up to be a full-time voice actress and safeguard her future (and bring us the big bucks)

I mean, yeah. Wouldn't have settled for AI if drawing was an actual option.

There's a phase when you can draw something decent looking, but can't draw what you want to draw. It's incredibly frustrating and very hard to get out of.

“We can get some beer,” you say, glancing at her, “That should be fine.”
Your eyes briefly linger on the shopping bag between the both of you, containing the maid costume.

“…As far as the maid outfit is concerned… I think it’s probably for the best if we just leave it in the bag,” you say.

“Are you sure?” replies Kaiba, “I figured that sort of thing would make Yui-chan happy…?”

You gently sway your head from side-to-side, “Eh, well, you’re not wrong,” you say, “But you have to draw the line somewhere. I like Yui-chan and I want nothing more than for her to be happy, but…”

“But… what?” says Kaiba, “If it makes her happy …and we sort of already shared that we want to dress up… then why not do it?”

You tap the steering wheel a few times with a finger as you think over how to put this. “Boundaries,” you say, toggling your turn signal as you enter a roundabout, “Boundaries are important.”

Pulling into the parking lot of the mall, you draw your lips into a line.
There are probably a dozen ways to phrase what you tried to say in a better way.
Respect yourself. Don’t let others take advantage of you.

If you don’t draw a hard line in the sand, then somebody else will draw it for you and that line is probably a few dozen steps further than what you’re comfortable with.

As a serial people-pleaser notorious for putting others first you’ve often found yourself doing things you shouldn’t be.
Taking on additional work, stress, and problems just to help somebody else.
Sometimes it’s worth it, sometimes it isn’t. You get to decide whether or not it is.

Mainly though, despite how close you’ve gotten, you’re not about to explain to your idol that the girl you’ll be dressing up as cat girls for would absolutely drag you into her bedroom at the earliest sign of anything that even vaguely resembles consent.

Serving yourself up in a maid uniform with cat ears would be crossing any previously established boundaries.

With a turn of the key, you stop the car.

“Let’s get some supplies for the party,” you say.
>>
>>5688359
---------

Thirty minutes later, both you and Kaiba return to the car.
Other than a grocery store, this small mall contains a variety of other stores so you were able to get everything you needed.
The trunk of your car filled with party decorations, a small cake, two six-packs of beer, and some other snacks.
You also brought a simple fresh shirt and skirt, so you don’t have to arrive at Kitabayashi’s party in office clothing.

The both of you even bought small gifts.
Giving gifts at a birthday isn’t a Japanese tradition, but more one that has blown over from the west.
Truth be told, Kaiba turned up with a gift, so you felt like you had to get one as well.

All supplies gathered; you make your way to Kitabayashi’s apartment.

“Have you thought of a way to get Yui-chan out of the house?” you ask Kaiba.

Kaiba nods, “I’ll ask if she wants to go to this small bistro near the apartment to get some dinner since it’s her birthday.”

A restaurant? That should buy you around an hour – more than enough.

“Ah,” says Kaiba, “Do you want me to bring you anything from the restaurant…?”

You smile, but shake your head, “Have fun.”
If you do end up hungry, then you’ll just gorge on the sushi you bought for the party.

And so, your plan unfolds.

After leaving her apartment key with you and armed with the lame of excuse of leaving her key at the office, Kaiba enters the apartment complex.
Five minutes later she texts you a thumbs-up emoji.

After a while, you duck down a bit in your car as you spot both Kaiba and Kitabayashi leaving the apartment complex.
Kitabayashi has dolled herself up a bit and seems in happy to have somebody to celebrate her birthday with.

You patiently wait for them to disappear from sight so you can make your move.
Grab the supplies. Up the stairs. Door. Key. Open. Shut. Lock. Mission accomplished.

You breathe a sigh of relief and glance about the room.
Some little things have been added since you were here last week.
A few houseplants. Small decorations. A wide painting on the wall where all the photos used to be.

Using a chair to reach higher spots, you decorate the house as well as you can.
Balloons, banners, cake – the works. You have a party popper at the ready for when Kitabayashi walks through the door.

Everything is set!

You’re ready for Kitabayashi to arrive any moment in the next…. thirty minutes.

Well then.

You pull out your phone and, like the workaholic you are, pray for an email to respond to.
There is one! A moment of quiet to reflect on things?
No way! That’s what those five minutes before you fall asleep are for.

It’s an email from “Cupid-san Shintaro”, the variety show you made a deal with.

---------

Hello Nagata-san,

Recordings for the celebrity games segment on “Cupid-san Shintaro” will occur on May 28th.
You’ll be happy to know we’ve managed to acquire a high-profile cast with renowned actors, up-and-coming models, and longtime voice-over artists.

We hope you and the participant, Enatsu Mari, will be in attendance at that time.
Per our agreement, there will be no payment, but considering we managed to unexpectedly get so many celebrities to sign up… perhaps you should be paying us instead?

Haha! Just kidding!

See you there!

Shintaro Akira

---------

In just over two weeks from now.
Well, they did say it would be near the end of May.

You’re feeling slightly guilty that you need Enatsu participate in such a sleazy show, but if Tachibana manages to find something to satisfy 'Everything Idol' then all the deals you made during the fallout of Kaiba’s scandal will be taking care of.

Minutes tick by as you spend some time on your phone.
Then you remember – you still need to change clothing!
You tiptoe into the bathroom and put on the simple clothing you bought at the mall.

Finally, you hesitantly reach into the bag from Isekai Clothing and lift out the cat ears.
You hold it at arm’s length, like it might jump out of your hands at any moment and force itself on your head.
Despite today’s earlier bravado – it’s a little embarrassing, really.

Be strong, Miho! Everybody will be wearing it soon!

Slowly and with great care, you don the cat ears.
You already feel a blush coming on, but determinately peek towards the mirror.

Uwaaa….

As you stand there in front of the mirror, your hands gingerly feel up the cat ears.
It… it doesn’t look bad, maybe you should’ve gotten the complete se--

Then – voices and the telltale sound of a key scratching against a lock.

You clip the tail to the back of your skirt and hurry to the living room.
As you do, the tail bounces up and down, pulling at your skirt.
There’s no time, you’ll just have to pray the zipper holds.

Party popper in hand, you hide behind the couch.
The door opens, there’s a gasp and you cringe internally as you miss the proper timing by a second, but bounce up anyway and pull the string – pop!
Confetti flies across the room, raining down on both Kaiba and Kitabayashi.

“Surprise!” you shout, grinning as you quickly hold up a slice of cake, “Happy birthday, Yui-chan!”

Kitabayashi manages some kind of high-pitched squealing noise, then rushes forward to embrace you in a hug.
“Thank you!” she shouts, slightly swaying from side-to-side as she hugs you.

“I’m sorry I had to lie to you!” you say, “We wanted it to be a surprise!”

Kitabayashi loosens the hug she has on you and leans back a bit to look you in the face.
“You bully!” she says, laughing to herself.

Spotting something at the edge of her vision, her eyes gradually slide upwards from your face as she speaks, “Here I was thinking I’d h-have t-to….”
Wide-eyed, Kitabayashi stutters into silence.

“Yui-chan?” you ask, looking up at her.

Kitabayashi glances towards the side, seeing the tail there.

“Ah,” you say, blushing a bit, “We figured a themed birthday party would be fun.”
You’re already in neck-deep, so might as well commit to it.
“There’s cat ears for everyone,” you say with an embarrassed chuckle, then strike a pose, “N-nyaa~”

Kitabayashi takes a very slow, deep breath, then swallows.
“It’s so cute!” she says with a sudden smile, “Where’d you get all this?”

“Isekai Cosplay,” you reply, “That’s the store Chigusa Iki did a promo shoot for!”

Kitabayashi raises a hand to your face, using a thumb to brush away a piece of confetti that stuck near your eye, causing you to squint the eye shut.
She almost seems to tense up, “It’s, ah, very well done,” she says, throwing in a quick smile.

“We got some groceries and snacks for the party,” you say, “I’ll get them from the kitchen…”

“Oh,” says Kitabayashi as she pats your shoulder, “Let me get them.”
She glances towards Kaiba, “Aoi-chan, can you help me in the kitchen real quick…?”

Kaiba laughs nervously, glancing off towards the side, “Yes, of course…”

The both of them set off towards the kitchen, but then you hear the sound of a door closing in the distance.
Which is odd, because the kitchen doesn’t have a door. It’s just an opening to the next room.

Leaving you in the living room.
Might as well start picking up the confetti…

After a few moments, you begin to hear Kitabayashi discuss something with Kaiba in this other room.

Seeing as they bothered to go to a different room, their conversation is not something you’re meant to overhear.

And so, you spend the next few minutes picking up confetti.
It seemed like such a good idea at the store, but it sure does get everywhere.
At least you didn’t get the fancy one that included glitter.
A vacuum cleaner sure would be appreciated here…

“We’re back, Nyaa~” says Kitabayashi, holding some simple drinks.
It seems like they’ve found your bag of cosplay items that you felt in the bathroom.
Both Kaiba and Kitabayashi are wearing a set of ears and tail.

Holding a tray of snacks, Kaiba follows in the uncomfortable shuffle of somebody that got scolded only moments earlier, “Nyaa…” she says.

“Everything okay?” you ask.

“Sure, sure,” says Kitabayashi, “Just some household stuff.”
Kitabayashi places the drinks down, sodas for all, then turns towards you, “Are you hungry at all? I kinda feel bad that we went out to dinner without you…”

You wave a hand, “It’s fine, it was the only thing we could think of to get you out of the house so I could put up decorations,” you say.

“Well, alright,” says Kitabayashi, then gestures towards your cat attire, “You know, you don’t have to keep all this on if you don’t want to.”

“It’s okay,” you say, then lean in as you speak in a whisper, “I’ve long since wanted to, but always felt too old…”

Kitabayashi almost seems to choke on a gasp, but manages to turn it into a snort.
“O-old?” she says, then laughs, “I’m twenty-six now, too!”

“Well, I’m turning twenty-seven next month…” you say.

“So?” she says, then lightly slaps your shoulder, “Didn’t come here to feel bad, did you?”
Kitabayashi leans back, dramatically holding the back of her hand against her forehead, “Ah, we’re old now. Over twenty-six. Now they’ll call us ‘Christmas Cakes’, right? Unwanted, unloved.”
She then shrugs, “But really we’re only one day older than we were yesterday, right?”

You came here to celebrate her birthday and, instead, now Kitabayashi is trying to make you feel better.
“You’re right,” you say, causing a cat ear to flop forward as you nod, then you hastily fix it, “I’m sorry.”

“Don’t worry,” says Kitabayashi, patting your head, “I can tell that it bothers you.”
She blinks twice, “Ah, I’m sorry. It’s the cat ears.”
Everyone’s apologizing. What a great party.
>>
>>5688563

You smooth your hair down, “It’s okay,” you say, then reach for the glass of soda on the table.
“Once again,” you say, raising your glass and as the other join you, “Happy Birthday, Yui!”

Kaiba seems have to regained some of her cheer and joins in, “Happy Birthday!”

“Ehehe~” says Kitabayashi, “Cheers!”

Kitabayashi looks towards Kaiba with a compassionate smile, “I’m sorry for earlier, but you understand, right?”

Kaiba nods, but seems strangely disappointed, “I suppose.”

You gaze floats between the both of them, “Hmm?”

Kitabayashi waves a hand, “Don’t worry about it.”

You smile in a smug fashion, “Keeping secrets? My~ you two sure have gotten close…”

“Sure have!” says Kitabayashi as she winks at Kaiba.

Drats. Of course, that doesn’t work on Yui-chan…
Kaiba on the other instantly turns into apologetic mess, “No,” she says, “I wouldn’t do that!”

You wonder how Kaiba survives her livestreams if she’s so easy to tease.
Ah. The livestreams. Kaiba’s stream is kicking off again soon, then there’s the debuts this week…
Your head tilts down with the recollection of this week’s workload, causing both cat ears to flop forward.

“All good?” asks Kitabayashi.

You sigh, “Just remembering work…”

“Fufu~ I’d offer you a drink in these harsh times, but there’s none here.”

You raise an eyebrow, “Oh, we brought some.”
A sudden thought with the accompanying guilt hits you, “Ah! Did you quit drinking? I can take it back home with me?”

Kitabayashi soothes you with a gesture, “No, not quite, it’s just that…” she says with a split-second glance towards Kaiba, “I just had reasons to cut back a bit…”

Mustering up some courage, Kaiba enters the conversation, “Yui-chan… Don’t hold back on my account… Don’t drink if you don’t want to, but don’t feel like you need to quit. It’s okay…”

This is like an alcoholics anonymous meeting in reverse.

It isn’t the healthiest way of dealing with stress, but drinking does help.
Those big, jarring problems take on completely different shapes when looked at through the bottom of a glass.

But maybe your opinion on this is a bit biased…

Nevertheless, Kitabayashi acts relaxed all the time, but knowing the past she had to deal with, she probably has plenty of concerns as well.

That past. An entirely different life.
That must weigh on her, but she never shared anything about it with you.
The fact that she still clings to all those photos that she has just hidden for now means she hasn’t moved on in the slightest.

Does she simply not trust you enough or is it embarrassing to share?
You want to help Kitabayashi, but you can’t do that unless she opens up…

Perhaps a few drinks can help with that…

“Yui-chan, come on…” you say, pouting sadly, “How will I explain this costume later on if we aren’t drinking? I wouldn’t be able to talk about the party! Dressing up like a cat girl completely sober? People would think something was wrong with me.”

Kitabayashi presses her lips into a line as she thinks it over, then sighs, “And that’d be right,” she says, patting your head again, “…Ah… I can’t stop doing it…”

“Don’t worry too much,” you say as you straighten your hair back down, “It’s not like I brought shots or anything. Just some beer.”

“I should be able to manage that much,” she says, then gives Kaiba a look, “Don’t you try to sneak in a drink! You’re underage.”

Kaiba looks taken aback, “I wasn’t going to!”

“Oh,” replies Kitabayashi, somewhat amazed, “Okay, I remember sneaking drinks at your age…”
She holds up an accusing finger with one hand and patting your head with the other, “But it’s bad! Don’t do it!”

“I’m not!” says Kaiba, now flustered.

“Good,” says Kitabayashi, then gets up with unmasked glee as she races towards the fridge.
She later returns with some cans of beer while you straighten your hair down.

Kitabayashi places the cans down, “Saké would’ve been nice, too,” she says, “They have those in all kinds of flavours now. Orange. Grape. Honey. All kinds.”

“Maybe next time,” you say, reaching for a can of beer, “I wasn’t sure what to bring, but saké felt a little heavy for a simple birthday.”

Saké typically has an alcohol percentage of fourteen percent.
Kitabayashi is a little taller than you so she might be able to stomach it, but with your build and size just one can of sake would make you ineligible to drive.
Not that you’ll be able to avoid an expensive taxi home with the current drink selection.

Both you and Kitabayashi crack open your cans, then raise them together as Kaiba joins in with her soda, “Cheers,” you all echo.

You take a big gulp of your drink and you feel the cold beer wash down your throat, unable to suppress the sudden shiver the follows.

Kitabyashi runs a finger across your lower arm, “Goosebumps,” she laughs.

You look down at your arm, there are indeed goosebumps there.
Not sure why she felt the need to point that out.
“So,” you say, sweeping your gaze across the room, “I see you’ve been redecorating?”

“Yeah,” says Kitabayashi, sipping her own drink, “Me and Kaiba went to some stores to give the place a bit more of a home-y feel. It was kinda bleak. Empty as it was.”

“Plants are heavy,” adds Kaiba, as she gives the large umbrella plant in the corner an accusing look.

“It does look nice though,” you say, “Very colourful.”

“Thanks,” replies Kaiba, taking another sip of her drink, “So, what have you been up to?”

“Mostly preparing for Enatsu-chan’s and Chigusa-chan’s debut,” you say, adding a sigh, “We’re setting up a sort of livestream for their announcement. Chigusa’s gonna be doing health and cooking stuff while wearing cosplay. Enatsu’s show will be around sport and exercise.”

Kitabayashi nods, “Sounds promising, so what’s the issue?” she asks.

“Everyone’s trying to get involved, which is great, but my inbox is never empty,” you say, taking a large gulp of your drink, “Should the sequins on Chigusa’s dress be off-white or silver? You want the kitchen cabinets in the studio to be slate grey or near black? If we decide on ball sports for Enatsu’s stream: what brand should the balls be?”

“They just don’t want to be the person that messes up,” says Kitabayashi, reaching for a piece of sushi, “I guess they must’ve been burned in the past once or twice.”

You allow your head to roll backwards, “I mean, I get it, but it’s so… exhausting… to answer these kinds of questions all day…” you say, pouting.
The cat tail attached to your skirt bend out of shape when you sat down, so you try to fix it.

Kitabayashi watches you with a big grin on her face that she’s trying, but failing, to hide.
“Just hang in there,” she says, corners of her mouth twitching.

“Hah?” you say, looking towards her.

“I’m sorry, but I can’t… but …. watching you complain as a mopey little cat girl… it’s just…” replies Kitabayashi.

You frown as you bend your tail into shape, “Yui, I’m serious,” you say,

“~Nyaa,” adds Kaiba somewhat hesitantly.

Kitabayashi breaks into full on laughter.

“Oooh?” you say, turning towards Kaiba who immediately freezes up, “Turning against me are you?”

“…Ah-haha… I was just….” says Kaiba, raising her hands defensively.

“Maybe I should add you to Chigusa’s stream in your current outfit,” you say, pointing at Kaiba’s cat ears, “You’d fit right in!”

Kaiba blushes fiercely, “No!” she says, hiding her face, “I’d die!”

“~Nyaa,” you add, mockingly.
>>
>>5689127

Kitabayashi has recovered from her fit of laughter, then pats your head again, “Now, now. Be nice to your little idol. You’re her manager, aren’t you?”

You finish off your can of beer, “Well, yeah…” you say, “I shouldn’t be so…”

“Catty?” finishes Kitabayashi, then snorts and laughs.

Kaiba giggles quietly, then speaks, “But, really, I’m happy that they’re gonna try livestreaming as well. I think it’ll be fun to talk about. We might even do collabs.”

“We’ll have to see,” you say, “Not sure if they’ll stick with it yet, it’s mostly for the debut right now.”

Kitabayashi wipes away a tear with her pinkie finger, then gets up to get a new drink for the three of you.

----

The minutes tick by filled with friendly conversation.
Slowly, the number of empty beer cans in the kitchen bin begin to increase.

You’re halfway down your fourth can of beer, your head resting on the table as you play with an empty can.
Kitabayashi hasn’t stopped petting you in the last thirty minutes – your hair is a bit of a mess.

“Yui-chaaaaan… ” you say, in the tones of what you hope sounds like a complaint.

“Not my f-fault,” she says, her words slightly slurring, “Cats get petted. That’s just h-how it is…”

You point an accusing finger at Kaiba, “Then what about her…!”

Kaiba freezes up, her own cat ears trembling from the sudden movement.

Kitabayashi lazily looks up at Kaiba, then back down as she continues stroking your head, “Don’t make things weird, Miho-chan…” she says, planting a small kiss on the top of your head.

Things are already weird!

Kaiba looks at you – smug.

Tch!

“There’s no point buttering me up…” you say, glancing sideways at Kitabayashi.

“Yes, yes, I know, I know,” replies Kitabayashi, adding a small sigh for effect, “You’re not interested in cute girls like me. I’m just making the most of it.”

You wince. You’re not so far gone that you don’t realize how weird it probably is for Kaiba to see her boss like this.
And with Kitabayashi’s remark just now…
Knowing Kaiba, she’s probably a blushing mess now, you think as you glance towards her.

There’s a deep frown on Kaiba’s face.“Hah?” she says, then gives you a look overflowing with disapproval, “She’s not… Is that what she said?”
>>
>>5689129

You and Kitabayashi happen to glance at each other at the same time, looking for an explanation.
Neither of you seem to know what has gotten into her.

Staring at Kaiba with half-lidded eyes, you slowly blink as you wait for an explanation.
None seems to be forthcoming. “…We talked about it before,” you say, fully aware of how awkward things have gotten, “But it wouldn’t work… as I’m not… y’know…”

Kaiba exhales heavily through her nose, “Hmpf,” she says, “I just wish you wouldn’t lie to – Ah.”
She manages to reel herself in somewhat, “I, eh, I suppose I’ll go to sleep… sorry…”
A distant door locks as Kaiba hastily excuses herself to her room.

You look towards Kitabayashi, “What was that about?”

Kitabayashi shrugs, cracking open another beer, “She’s going through a lot right now,” she says.

“Eh?” you say, gripping your tail in self-defence, “Like what?”
The fortune-teller mentioned as much, but she didn’t say what.

Kitabayashi scratches a cheek, “Just sort of knowing herself, I guess,” she says, “It isn’t a secret that I’m lesbian, I don’t hide it or anything, so she must’ve heard at the office. She’s been asking me questions and the like.”

Is that what’s going on?

“What’d you say?” you ask.

“Just answers, I guess,” says Kitabayashi, taking a sip of her drink, “I’m not trying to push her in either direction. She just asks things and I answer.”
Kitabayashi gestures towards you with her can, “She asked about you, too. How I felt about you, that is.”

Your face is probably already a bit red because of the drinking, but still, you feel blood rushing to your cheeks, “What? What’d you say?”

Kitabayashi shrugs, “The truth. Felt no need to hide it. She seemed happy for me.”

Happy for Yui-chan? Why?
I mean, you’ve both been helping out Kaiba-san in your own ways.
Then there’s also the fact that EmikoDesu55 remarked several times during her messages to Kaiba how lonely you must be – does she still remember that?

You stare ahead into nothing as you think things over.
The cat girl costumes were Kaiba’s idea. After she mentioned how Kitabayashi said she liked them.
Then there was the maid costume and Kaiba seemed strangely pushy about you putting it on…

Your face flushes full crimson as the realization dawns on you – you hide your face in your hands.

“Finally caught on?” says Kitabayashi, sipping her drink, “Took you a while.”

“You knew?” you say, peeking between splayed fingers, “What didn’t you say something!?”
>>
>>5689131

Kitabayashi shrugs, “I did. Just not to you. The moment I saw you standing there,” she says, gesturing at your outfit, “In your cat girl attire. I knew Kaiba had a hand in it. I let slip how a girl during my idol days used to, ah, well… forget that. You look cute in it though.”

“What ha--” you start, but get interrupted.

“Sssh, ssh,” says Kitabayashi, finishing off her fifth can, “That was a lot of questions from you. My turn… Why did Kaiba act like that?”

“I… I don’t know,” you say.
Honestly, you can’t think why.

“Are you sure?” says Kitabayashi with a light frown.

You try to push the memory of your alcohol-riddled mind.
What have you ever said or done that could make Kaiba think that way?

“Because I’ve never had a boyfriend?” you offer.

“I know that, but I don’t think Kaiba does,” replies Kitabayashi.

You patted Kaiba’s head that one time after a stream.
It’d be concerning if she thought those thinks ever since.
That would basically be sexual harassment. No?

You went clothing shopping together a while ago.
Thinking back, Kaiba acted strangely even back then.
She fled when you had to strip down to your underwear for the sizing of a dress.
Was that because she thought the situation has some kind of tension you weren’t aware of?

Before that was the hot spring trip…

Your jaw drops. Oh no.
That was back when you and Watase Yoko…
During that same night Kaiba mentioned that she hadn’t been able to sleep at all…

You can’t even remember how you ended up in Watase Yoko’s bed that night.
There was so much alcohol in your system that the both of you probably didn’t fall into bed quietly.

That in a house with, quite literally, paper-thin walls during a night that Kaiba was doom scrolling on her phone – awake almost the entire night.

You swallow as you glance towards Kitabayashi.

Guilty.

“It seems you know something…” says Kitabayashi, smirking.

What was Kaiba trying to do? Set us up with Yui? If so she went the completely wrong way, she should've tried to make Yui attractive to us, not vice versa. Did she expect Yui to see us in a maid dress and force herself on us or something?

There’s no way you can tell Kitabayashi your night of drinking ended in Watase’s bed.

“I think I know, yeah,” you say.

Kitabayashi sits upright, “Well…?”

You look away, “I can’t say…”

“So, something happened that has Aoi convinced you’re hot for girls to a point she was, for some reason, trying drop you into my lap, cat girl costume and all, and you won’t say?” says Kitabayashi, arms folded.

Sheepishly you nod, “I’m sorry…” you say, “I feel like it’s best that I keep it a secret…”

There’s a sharp click as Kitabayashi opens her sixth can, “This only makes me m-more curious,” she says, then smirks as she pulls at the collar of her shirt, revealing part of her cleavage, “It was something lewd. Wasn’t it? She caught you with somebody? Kissing a girl?”

“Nothing lewd!” you say, flustered at the implication.

“I dunno. Aoi even got mad. She seemed pretty convinced,” says Kitabayashi, she reaches for some now-dry sushi, knocking over empty cans in the process.

“You’re drunk,” you say.

“Seems like your plan worked then~” she says.

Why’d you brought the beer again?
Ah. Kaiba suggested it.

“Hmmmm…” says Kitabayashi, rolling her neck, “Maybe I’ve just gone about it all wrong.”
“You’ve been going on lunch dates with Watase-san, right? Is that more your type?” she adds.

“It wasn’t a date! Yui, I don’t have a ty--” you say, but you cut off your retort as Kitabayashi scoots closer.
Really close.

“Maybe I should’ve been more direct,” she says, putting her face inches from yours, “I didn’t wanna risk losing you as a friend, but it seems like all this teasing you’ve been doing was because you wanted me to make a move…well, it’s just us now…”

“Teasing!?” you say, blushing like a maiden, “Yui, you know what happened today was Kaiba’s…”

“But you went along with all of it, no? Besides, you’ve been a tease even before that…” says Kitabayashi, “You know how I feel about you… I’m not a saint, y’know, even I have limits…”

Your heart is racing a mile a minute.

“If all it takes is for me to be a bit more assertive, well, that’s easy,” says Kitabayashi. Her hands slide over your lower back, she then pulls you onto her lap, facing her.
“I’m not about to lose you to some secret girl,” she adds.

This is bad, isn’t it?

She’s looking at you with her large, green eyes filled with desire.
Rather than liquor, all you can smell is her perfume which seems to fill the air around you.
Her lips parted slightly, a light gleam on them from some lip-gloss.

You’ve never kissed a girl before.
Or anyone seriously for that matter…

This…

This is probably bad.

>>

Guess that’s the drawback of drinking with people who find one attractive, also because of Kaiba, interestingly enough, for both cases. The stress and cat ears
>>
>>5689263

You have mere seconds to make a decision here.
Tucking a free strand of hair behind an ear and leaning in, that’s all she’ll need to act.
Then Kitabayashi will kiss you and things will never be the same.

What she said earlier rings true: you might lose her as a friend if you let this happen.
Yui-chan will want to move to the next stage, probably.
Dating, at first, and, if things go her way, girlfriends eventually.

But if it doesn’t work out – you’ll drift apart.
It’s almost impossible to go back to mere friends afterwards.

There was a small chance you might’ve let the alcohol in your system take the reins, because of curiosity if nothing else.

The fortune teller did mention that past opportunities for love would re-emerge.
Potential relationships you turned down or missed out on.
Maybe this is one of them.

But you can’t take that chance.
A kiss you could risk, but you’re not confident a full-blown relationship would work out.
And that’s what Kitabayashi wants.

“Yui… stop,” you say, quietly at first, but then louder, “Please, stop!”

The added volume drives the message home.
Shocked, Kitabayashi looks up towards you.

“I promise you, it’s not what you think,” you say, “I’m not seeing some girl…”

Kitabayashi sighs, “Nothing’s changed then?”

You nod meekly, “Nothing’s changed,” you say, “I think Kaiba just misunderstood…”

“That’s a bummer…” asks Kitabayashi, “Still can’t tell me what happened?”

You shake your head, “No, I’m sorry…” you reply.

“Well, not like I don’t have secrets of my own,” says Kitabayashi, her face then softens, “Didn’t scare you. Did I?”

“It’s okay,” you say, taking the cat ears off your head, “I might’ve gone too far with things…”

“I just figured that if there was a chance, that I’d… that’s no excuse, though,” says Kitabayashi, then lightly taps you on the thighs, “You should probably get off my lap then…”

“Ah, yes,” you say, swaying slightly as you get up.

There’s an uncomfortable silence.
It stretches and makes itself at home.
The time for words has come and gone and the silence is loving it.
>>
>>5689285

“I should probably go…” you say, launching the silence back towards homelessness.

Kitabayashi takes a breath to pull herself together despite the torrent of emotions and the alcohol.
“Yeah, probably, and I should clean this all up,” she says.

“I can help…?” you say.

“No, that’s okay,” says Kitabayashi, waving a dismissive hand, “I just …want to be alone…”
Her voice is tight – on the edge of tears. She’s losing balance every other step she takes.

Sort of, but Emiko did it to satify her own selfish desires and to get blackmail material. Kaiba thinks she's helping us be less lonely and happier with someone else, who she also likes. She's just trying to play matchmaker for who she seems to view as a nice, but repressed and lonesome, lesbian.

The best thing you can do is give each other some space.

“Okay,” you say, shouldering your purse, “…I guess I’ll see you at work then.”

“Yeah,” replies Kitabayashi in a strained voice.

Not knowing what to say, you simply nod, then depart.

Once back in the car, you let out a long, exasperated sigh.
Suppose there’s better ways to end a birthday party.

The whole idea had been to do something nice for Kitabayashi.
However, she’s probably worse off after everything that happened just now.

What would’ve happened if you had just a few more drinks?
If in that moment in time, you decided to take a chance on something unfamiliar?
Would it have worked out? Probably not, right?

You shake your head to fight against the clouded thoughts in your mind.
Clearly, you’re too drunk to drive.

You call a taxi from within the warmth of your car and wait for it to arrive.

Eventually, a taxi stops by and you’re driven home.
After you open the door of your apartment, you let your purse drop in an empty corner.

Your kick off your shoes, not bothering to put them away properly.
Enjoy a tall glass of water to cushion the inevitable hangover, then pull out your phone.

You frown at your phone for a while, then decide to send Kitabayashi a message.
She didn’t seem okay at the time, but you decided to respect her wishes and left as requested.
A response arrives within a minute of your text.

@NagataMiho: Hope you’re okay…. still friends, right?
@YuiYuiYui: Of course :D

A thin smile slips onto your face.
She may have missed out on a kiss, but deep down she must’ve known it wouldn’t have worked out.
If anything, she probably just wanted to sneak that kiss in. The perv.
You smile to yourself then sigh in relief, finish your glass of water, and head to bed.

Sitting at the kitchen table, Kitabayashi has her eyes fixed to her phone after sending the message.
She reaches for the remaining half of the final can of your remaining portion of the beer.
Instead, her unmonitored hand knocks it over – spilling beer over the kitchen table.

Jolting to her feet, her chair topples backwards, clattering to the kitchen floor.
Sense of balance distorted, she flails for a moment, then topples over.
With a groan, she recovers to her knees and clings to a table leg for support, chest caved, and shoulders slumped.

Spilled beer slowly drips from the edges of the table, onto the kitchen tiles.
Kitabayashi watches it happen, then cries. A strangled sobbing.

A short while passes, when then there’s a voice near the kitchen doorway.
“Yui-chan…?” says Kaiba carefully, standing there in her pyjamas, “…Everything okay?”

Kitabayashi hastily wipes at her eyes with the heel of her hand, “Fine,” she says, forcing a smile, “I thought you were asleep, sorry.”

Kaiba lingers in the doorway, eyeing the toppled chair, “…You’ve been crying…”

Kitabayashi laughs, “I’ve been rejected again, haha~”

“Oh…” says Kaiba, shuffling uncomfortably in place, “…I know you said not to get involved, but…I think if you keep trying, then eventu--”

“No,” says Kitabayashi resolutely, then sighs, “…No…. I’m done… ”
Whatever meagre defence she built-up crumbles away, like the final strands of a frayed rope snapping away in rapid succession.
“…For a moment, I really thought…” she tries, then bawls, “…It hurts …Uuuu...”

Another year.
Another birthday.
Alone.

A past overflowing with friends and family, but a present nearly void of both.

On this sunny day you find yourself in Starscape Entertainment’s studio for the TV-show “One-day Marriage”.
Chigusa Iki is handed a loose script that serves more as guidance than hard lines, and they kick things off with a brief introduction of the actors.

Her counterpart in this show is a young man one year her senior, Arata Tadashi.
Although mostly working as an actor, Tadashi’s agency is trying push him as a multi-talented star.
At least, that’s what you hear from his manager, who can’t keep stop bragging about Arata.

They start the recordings at the wedding ceremony.
As far as the audience is concerned, the first time Arata sees Chigusa Iki is when she walks through the chapel’s wide double doors in a wedding gown.

We’re living in the “Reaction” age where the audience isn’t sure how to feel about something without somebody on screen helping them along.
The groom, Arata, manages to “Oooh” and “Aaah” in the right ways and his manager is extremely smug about it.

That much is obvious. How do we do it is the question.
>>
>>5690708
Hmmm, do you think she and Watase could be a couple? Though Watase seems to be the type not to stay in relationships for long.
>>
>>5690714
Watase is a player, and also prefers softer girls who like being bullied. They're both dominant types. I'm not sure they're compatible as a couple... But friends? Maybe casual lovers? Maybe...

>>5690725
This might be a good idea, actually. Still need to get Watase to know Yui first though.

What I don't understand is why Yui doesn't have anyone. She's hot, kind, fun to be around, and available to both guys and girls, how the hell is she still single?
Is it maybe an unconscious fear of relationships that causes her to self-sabotage? Or did she give up on herself and that's why her only friends are us, who worked with her for years, and Kaiba, who got pushed onto her, i.e. people who were thrust into her life by circumstance?
>>
>>5690737
She IS living under an assumed identity after, having buckled under pressure to perform, her entire life was taken away. She lost everyone she loved, and can't really contact most of them. it seems as if she's practically in witness protection. That must be super isolating, and it must be really hard for her to reach out for anything 'real' after a blow like that.

Most of that also applies to Miho I guess
Imo, after the early 2000s, you only stay single if you're a complete retard (like me) or if you want to. There has never been an easier time to get a lover, casual or not, than the past 15-ish or so years.

Maybe, but Yui doesn't have trouble getting laid. Our introduction to her was Yui talking about being a bit of a homewrecker. The problem is her lack of real, emotionally-intimate connections. She can get her fill of dick and vag, but what she needs is heart and soul.

The wedding concludes beautifully with the pretend couple gazing longingly in each other’s eyes.
As always, the closing shot is that of the two newly married officiating with a kiss, but as their lips close in one another’s – the screen cuts to black.
It’s well known that an actual kiss is only implied and never actually happens.
Fans of established idols, who regularly participate, would be foaming at the mouth if that wasn’t the case.

Once the wedding scene ends, the director calls cut and calls for a break.
Actors can relax while the studio staff make preparations for the next scene, breaking down the current set and building up the next one.
This being a dedicated studio, the whole process takes mere minutes.

You hand Chigusa a water bottle as she walks off-stage, “You look beautiful,” you say.
For a lot of girl’s Chigusa’s age it would be a dream to have a wedding like this and be able to wear a dress like the one she’s wearing.

Chigusa bobs her head, “I appreciate the comment, manager-san,” she says, fanning her face with a hand, “Though I dread the moment this episode will air.”
Though beautiful, you don’t doubt the many-layered dress is terribly hot in this studio environment.

You tilt your head to the side, “How so?” she says, “Embarrassing?”

“Not at all,” replies Chigusa flatly, “It’s just work. What I don’t look forward to is my grandparents sharing the video back in their town. The residents there won’t understand that it’s a pretend marriage and I’ll probably be hearing complaints on why they weren’t invited for months onward.”

“Ahaha…” you say, “They’ll get used to it before long, I’ll make sure you’ll be starring in far more shows soon.”

Chigusa bows at the waist, “Thank you for your on-going support,” she says.

You wish Chigusa would relax a bit more around you, but this is just how she is.

There’s some time until the next scene, so you decide to discuss the script.
“So,” you say, reaching for the script, “They’re preparing a set with a lot of green screens now, the groom, Arata-san, will princess-carry you through that door over there,” you continue, pointing towards a lone doorframe standing admits an ocean of green screens, “Then close the door behind – and that’ll be scene.”

“I had been informed that there would be a home?” asks Chigusa, a hint of confusion on her face – if you know where to look for it.
>>
>>5691388

“That’s going to be edited in,” you say, “They’ll be building up various sets throughout the day. Kitchen, living room, bedroom, and the like. The director will record a bunch of scenes and using lightning to emulate the correct time of day – then edit it all together.”

Chigusa blinks, “Excuse me?” she says.
Though Chigusa is quite smart, she hasn’t gotten too much exposure with the technical side of the entertainment industry.

“There’s no need for a home or to stay here a full day,” you say, standing beside Chigusa as you leaf through the pages of the script, “We should be done in just a few hours. Every episode is only forty-five minutes after all.”

“Set’s ready,” shouts a man in distance, “Shooting in five. All actors on set, please.”

Chigusa bows, “There seems to be a lot I don’t yet know, I’ll endeavour to do better.”

“Don’t worry about it too much,” you say, flashing a smile, “Just do what you can and I’ll take care of the rest.”

“Thank you, manager-san,” says Chigusa, then walks on set.

---------------

The actors have a brief chat with the director, who then waves at the camera men.
Both actors are still in their wedding attire as the scene is supposed to portray the happy couple arriving at their new home.

“Action!” calls a distance voice.

Arata swoops Chigusa of her feet, eagerly awaiting the yelp or cute complaint that usually accompanies a move like this.
Instead he receives a flat stare and directions to the door since it appears he isn’t moving.

“Smile! Smile!” shouts the director as a stone-faced Arata princess-carries an emotionless Chigusa towards the door.

You hide your face in your hands.

---------------
>>
>>5691389

It took a couple of takes, none of which were much better than the first, but it seems like they’re satisfied.

After the scene, Chigusa is escorted to the stylist and costume designer which will help her out of her wedding dress and into a prepared set of clothing for the next scenes.
She briefly returns to you while the actors wait for the studio staff to finish the new set.

“How’d it go?” you ask.

“Underwhelming in many respects,” replies Chigusa, “I was under the impression that one performs princess carry by supporting the back and knees, but this information seemed lost on Arata-kun, who instead had his hands on my thighs and kept squeezing. His strength also gave out during the third take. Recordings are on a fifteen minute break as he said he needed a masseuse for his back problems.”

“Eh?” you say. Groping?

“Chigusa… are you okay?” you ask carefully, “Why didn’t you say anything?”

“About what?” says Chigusa.

“Eh? The, uh, squeezing?” you say, somewhat confused.

“It seemed appropriate for a groom to threat his bride that way,” says Chigusa, “I figured it was part of the act.”

Uh. You might need to have a chat with Chigusa at a later time.
And also with the director of this place.

“Eh, well, if he does something like that again… just say something,” you reply.

“Certainly, manager-san,” says Chigusa, bobbing her head.

You take out the script again, “So, they’re shooting the next scenes in chronological order, with the first scene happening in the kitchen where you’ll have breakfast. Apparently, the kitchen is fully functional with a bunch of ingredients. Says here that the bride is encouraged to make a meal she’d actually serve her husband.”

The past few days you’ve skimmed some episodes of this show, there have been many participants who weren’t able to cook all that well and their inability gets played up immensely.
With close-ups of burned meal, a wincing expression of the husband, and the embarrassed wife.

“Since this is actually quite similar to what we’re planning for the livestream, I’d like if you could adopt your idol persona here. This show won’t air until after you’ve debuted, so I figured it’d be less bumpy for any fans if you act the same way in all the media you’re in.”

Chigusa nods, “That sounds sensible. I’ll do my best.”

“All actors to set!” shouts a distant voice, “Starting in five!”

Arata Tadashi, the groom, walks towards the set with slow, heavy steps.
There’s a heat pack plastered to his lower back which he hides beneath his shirt.

“Action!”
>>
>>5691391

Arata sits at the kitchen table, a smug expression on his face as he enjoys a coffee.
“I’m curious,” he says, not bothering to hide that he takes in Chigusa’s figure.

Chigusa stands facing away, an apron tied to her front, “What about, dear husband?” she says, operating the stove.

Arata cracks a playful smile, leaning on an elbow, “Why, what my beautiful wife is preparing for me today?”

“That entirely depends, dear husband,” says Chigusa, turning to face him, “Could you tell me what your macros are?”

You hide your face in your hands.

------------

As the recordings go on, Arata seems determined to get some kind of reaction out of Chigusa.
He lounges beside the bedroom door, then eyes Chigusa suggestively, “Maybe you’d like to get some exercise…?” he says, pointing over his shoulder with a thumb.

Chigusa look towards him, tilts her head slightly, and then smiles.

Fast forward ten minutes.

“Your musculature really is lacking,” says Chigusa, arms folded.

Arata’s legs tremble violently as he struggles to complete a set of body-weight squats.

You hide your face in your hands.

---------------

Arata walks towards the living room couch with the slow waddle of a man that just completed a full set of leg exercises, then lets himself drop onto it, “Just… cut them off,” he says, kicking up his feet as he sits with his back pressed against the couch, “I’m ready.”

“But how will you provide for this household, dear husband,” says Chigusa, “A proper man knows his responsibilities.”

“Pfff,” replies Arata, then glances away.
As he does, his eyes happen to drift over his manager off-set – who is giving him a death stare.
The current episode hasn’t exactly painted Arata as the multi-talented star the agency is hoping he’ll be.

He’s going to have to put in some effort – or else.

“Chigusa-cha-- no… Iki,” he says, in the seductive tones of a young man that has broken over a dozen hearts, “Why don’t you join me on the couch? We can snuggle up and watch a movie?”

There it is! The modern man’s excuse for fooling around!
“Watching a movie” is basically synonymous with doing anything but that!
It’s a simple ploy to get two wanting bodies in a limited space, groping and grinding!

“You’re my wife, aren’t you? Iki? Let’s watch a movie,” says Arata, patting the seat next to him.

“I do enjoy a good movie,” says Chigusa, taking the seat beside him with perfect posture.

Chigusa watched the full movie, including the credits.

After twenty minutes of his efforts being shushed because he was talking over the movie, Arata fell asleep.

You hide your face in your hands.
>>
>>5691393
--------------

However, Arata presses on. He’s determined to make his mark in the show.
As the show replicates the evening hours of the day, the actors are told to behave as they would at home.

The fake clock strikes 9 PM.
Arata is ready with a boardgame, friendly conversation, and a mind filled with actions that can be not-so-covertly performed underneath the table.
He’s determined to get a yelp, blush, or anything really, out of Chigusa.

Chigusa Iki is in bed, vast asleep. As she would ordinarily be around 9 PM.
Her sleep schedule determined by a life spend growing up around elderly.

You hide your face in your hands.

--------------

Eventually the recordings come to a close and the director seems happy with what he’s got.
In fact, he’s already working with the editors to draw the maximum potential from the footage.
Glancing at the screen, you can’t help but notice a folder named ‘Laugh tracks’ open on the editor’s PC.

Poor Arata-kun.

The job was a success, but barely so.

Enatsu Mari’s job at Kyoto Animation for 3D tracking dance choreography (Wednesday)

On this Wednesday you find yourself in a remote studio owned by Kyoto Animation.
Animation is incredibly labour intensive, so they’re always looking for ways to replace traditional animation to ease the workload on the animators.

…Is what they say, but everybody knows it’s all about cutting costs.

There are seven dancers here that receive brief instruction on the desired choreography.
Apparently, Kyoto Animation is toying with the idea of a show with song and dance, but doing all that with traditional animation would be too costly.

Thus, Enatsu Mari and six other girls are currently standing in the middle of sizeable studio.
Expensive motion tracking cameras peer down on them from every corner.
If they can make this work, then that anime original KyoAni has been planning might see the light of day after all.

By the way, I wanted to ask: since successful jobs increase fame, and more fame provides more difficult jobs, what happens if fame-appropriate job DCs outpace the idol's skill ceiling?
>>
>>5691413
You've probably noticed that you get offered a lot of jobs, so there'll likely always be something that an idol can do.
The job generator I've written creates a range of jobs with the idol's current rank at the center point.
So, there'll be easy jobs, do-able jobs, and jobs that are near the edge of what your idol can accomplish.

That being said, what if you want to constantly push your idol to higher fame, but you don't like the idea of rolling for jobs with a very low chance of success?
Normally, you could train your idol to a higher skill level, but what if they've reached their limit?

>Actual answer here
If an idol reaches the limits of their talent, then you usually sell their contract to the highest bidder and recruit a new one with higher potential. (or they simply retire)
Idols that have been carefullly trained to higher skill levels and/or have gotten famous will get you a lot of money if you sell on their contract. (to other managers or agencies)

The system was designed with the rotation of idols in mind. It hasn't happened yet, but I've mentioned this in the very first thread.
Although not impossible, low rank idols are probably going struggle to be able to complete high rank jobs by themselves.
Nice as they might be, some people simply aren't "world-class". So, if that's where you want to go -- then act accordingly.

There are ways around this by, for example, using the "group" system where a low rank idol could complete high rank jobs because the other members are making up for their missing skill.

This is one of those cases where you decide between people or profit.
Glancing over the numbers, I think it should be possible for your current idols to reach high fame, but it won't be easy.
If you want to stick with your current idols then your best shot is probably getting to July, getting a skilled fourth and fifth idol, and have those "carry" the group.

Enatsu performs her task with casual ease.
Judging by the smile on her face, she might not even consider this work to begin with.
Some of the other participants don’t share that opinion, they’re wheezing their way through the exercises.

After numerous rounds of intense dance routines, the instructor concludes the experiment.

The footage will be sent to a place that specializes in motion tracking.
Only time will tell if the footage instils enough confidence in Kyoto Animation for them to use it on their major productions.

You walk up towards Enatsu and hand her a towel, “Good work out there,” you say.

“Hehe, thanks,” says Enatsu, using the towel to wipe the sweat from her face, “I had a lot of fun.”

You glance off towards the side, where a pair of young girls are sprawled out on the floor.
Not so fun for some others. It seemed very taxing on the body.

A silver-haired man wearing a baseball cap approaches, holding an iPad, “Matsuno Inc, right?” he says.

“That’s right,” you reply, bowing, “I’m Nagata Miho and this is Enatsu Mari.”

“Hiramatsu Yuuji,” says the man, bowing in kind, “I’m with the motion cap team.”
He swipes away on his tablet for a moment.

“Good work earlier,” he says, “During initial screening we noticed that the motion capture software seems to take Enatsu-san’s movement quite easily. We’re not sure why, to be honest. We’d like to invite you over again for another trial run – if you’re up for it.”

You look towards Enatsu, who nods eagerly.

“If you’ll have us then we’d like to work with you again,” you reply, bowing slightly.

“That’s good to hear,” he says, making a note on his tablet, “We’ll send the details to your agency. Do know that we’ll be testing the very limits of what motion cap can accomplish next time. So, make sure you’re fit and had a good night’s rest before that.”

“Thank you,” you say, “Though we’re willing, it will have to remain to be seen if that time and place works for us.”

“Understandable,” says Hiramatsu, “Things like date and time should be listed on the job offer sent to your agency.”

You say your goodbyes and leave with Enatsu Mari to return to the office.

Once there, you notice how Enatsu is slow to move and noticeably less energetic.

“You okay?” you ask.

“Um!” says Enatsu, smiling, “I’m gonna make use of the company showers. Bye, bye, Nagata-san!”

You go your separate ways and set off towards your office.
Upon arrival, Matsui Tomo, your assistant, informs you of the job offer from Kyoto Animation.

We also need to find a good job-training-stress rotation. Most of the weekly decisions have been made reactively instead of a laid out, collaborative plan. Imho, routine decisions (jobs, skill training and stress management) shouldn't take much discussion effort - instead, we should focus our energies for the story arcs and fame management (events and such) and story-arcs (like The Emiko Incident :tm: )

I think that 4chin still has the "le site of hackerinos and racists'' stigma so it's quite understandable that people wouldn't want to move from there to here. Maybe the tactic would be more effective if the move were made in reverse, but I can understand why you chose to do it the way you did.

I'm kinda stuck with something.

A situation has come up that would ordinarily result in a vote.
However, the player character (Nagata) isn't there to influence or make the decision.

>1 - Have people vote for the decision anyway
>2 - Have people roll a 1d100 + relevant modifiers with actions in roll ranges and decide that way (Kinda like a drinking roll)
>3 - Just have the QM decide. If the player character isn't here, then there shouldn't be a roll or vote.

The sky was thick with dark clouds, the merest suggestion of sunlight able to poke through the dense gathering overhead like a lone man shouldering his way through the crowds at a boyband concert.
Kaiba Aoi gazed at the sky above, then smiled, “Good…” she said quietly.

This was to be the first job she’d take on without her manager beside her.
Truthfully, she missed Nagata’s supporting presence even despite what Nagata had done.

Weren’t she and Kitabayashi supposed to be friends?
Why would she lie to Kitabayashi like that?

Nagata-san might be saying she’s not interested in women, but Kaiba was wide awake that night at the hot spring.
The unsteady footsteps on the old, wooden floor, the giggling, how both she and Watase Yoko entered the same room, and the heavy breathing and the moans that followed.
And then there were the things Watase-san said…

The sudden memory causes her to blush, bringing some warmth to her cheeks.

A short distance away, a distracted young dockworker injures his bank account as he accidentally drops a crate of supplies into the ocean.

If they don’t want to be together then that’s one thing, but Kitabayashi deserves better than being lied to, right?

So, maybe it’s good that she starts distancing herself from Nagata-san a bit.
Besides, things haven’t really worked out that well for the idol Kaiba Aoi.
She failed the job before this and the one before that was taken away.
Kaiba was going to have to go on jobs by herself sooner or later, either as an idol or otherwise.

She takes a deep breath in an effort to calm her nerves.
The wind carrying the cold spray of the sea sweeps over her, stealing away another few degrees of warmth on an already chilly day.
Kaiba shivers.

In the distance, she sees people from Yoshikawa Sailing preparing a boat.
oon, she’ll have to move up and greet them.

Fishermen and other dockworkers move towards and past her, many of them throwing glances at the prettied-up girl that seems so very much out of place.
Kaiba mutters quietly to herself, practicing her introduction.

“…I’m Kaiba Aoi from the Matsuno Inc. Idol Agency, it’s a pleasur-- it’s nice to…?”

“Hello, Kaiba Aoi from Matsuno Inc…”

“Matsuno Inc. Idol Agency, I’m Kai- … Haaa….”

Her phone rings. It’s Nagata-san.

Kaiba swallows, regretting her actions.
She should’ve said something earlier.
Being mad is no excuse when you’re supposed to be a professional.

Ah. Confrontation.
Not something Kaiba has ever been good with.

She takes a deep breath, then answer the phone.
>>
>>5694319

“Yes, this is Kaiba Aoi,” she says, defaulting to formal phone etiquette.

“Ah, Kaiba-san,” says the voice of Nagata.

Kaiba’s toes curl up in her boots as she braces herself.
When she acted out like this in the past her mother would gladly free up a half hour of her schedule to remind Kaiba who she was talking to and whose roof she slept under.

“Will you be okay be yourself?” asks the voice of Nagata, “I can still swing by if you like?”

“Eh?” says Kaiba, “No, ah, I’m fine… Please focus on Enatsu-san’s debut. I’ll be fine. I… ehm…. just wanted to push myself, yeah? …Yeah.”

“Hmm,” says the voice of Nagata, “I see. Well, that’s a good initiative. Just wanted to wish you good luck today! Bye bye.”

“Ah, thank you, Nagata-san,” says Kaiba, “Bye…bye…”

The call cuts off, Kaiba sighs in relief.

“Good morning,” calls a voice.
A man approaches wearing a life vest, he extends his hand – a western greeting.
Despite his obvious foreign origin, his Japanese is quite good.

Kaiba takes the hand and shakes it, while adding in a bow, “H-hello,” she says, “I’m Kaiba Aoi from Matsuno Inc. Agency for idols…”

“Kaiba, alright,” says the man, “I’m Lionel Taylor. Or I suppose, Taylor Lionel to you.”

“Taireru?” echoes Kaiba.
The foreign name is hard to pronounce.

“Close enough,” says the man, “I’m here to spearhead the Yoshikawa Sailing marketing campaign. The foreign investors weren’t impressed with the results thus far, so they send me.”

Kaiba nods, “Ah, we-ri imperesu!” she says in her best, broken English.
She will forever remember this moment, but not in a good way.

The man coughs, “Please, Japanese is fine,” he says, “I wanted to talk to you a bit before the shoot, discuss today’s schedule.”

“Tahetu isu fine wetehu mi,” says Kaiba, determined to ruin any prospect of sleep.

“Again. Japanese is fine,” says Lionel Taylor, now looking mildly concerned.
He looks over his shoulder as somebody calls out to him, shouts something in English that Kaiba doesn’t understand and returns to his attention to her.

“So, we’ll be taking that boat over there,” he says, pointing towards the yacht in the distance, “And we’ll be towing a smaller sailboat. Camera folks will be on the yacht, shooting pictures of you and other girls on the sailboat. We’ve got bikinis on board. You can change in the yacht.”

“Eh?” says Kaiba, growing flustered, making strange hand gestures as she speaks, “But the pictures online… special clothing…lifejackets?”

“Conventional marketing for sailing hasn’t resulted in notable conversion in terms of sales. People in full gear with a life jacket hanging from the side of a sailboat. It’s just not doing it,” replies Lionel.

“But… I’m not sure if I…” replies Kaiva, vaguely.

“Look. A/B testing has clearly proven that the western approach causes higher user retention on the site and conversion to orders. More skin, more sales. The age old saying hold true,” says the man, then switching to English, “Sex sells.”

Kaiba gasps, “S-sekesu?”

The man raises an eyebrow, then switches back to Japanese, “Suppose your people don’t have that saying?” he says, then shakes his head, “Anyway. All the other girls are fine with wearing bikinis. You don’t have to worry about anything, we’re all professionals here. So, ignore the implication.”

“Eh?” says Kaiba, then looks away, clearly uncomfortable, “…But…the weather…?”

“Ever heard of Photoshop?” says Lionel, then runs a hand over his face, clearly tiring of the hesitation, “If you don’t want to do then we can just call your agency and call it off, we’ve got plenty of other girls.”

That’d mean another failed job for Kaiba Aoi.
Nagata-san has been very kind and understanding, but surely there’s a limit?
A limit Kaiba must be fast approaching.

“No!” says Kaiba, alarm in her voice, then calms down a little, “No… I’ll wear it.”

“Good, you’ll do great,” he says, smiling as he eyes Kaiba over, then turns, “If you’ll follow me…”

----------

You end the call, then sigh, “She’s a terrible liar…”
As far as you’re aware, Kitabayashi seemed fine when you send her a message.
Maybe she’s just embarrassed that you found out she tried to set up you and Kitabayashi.
Despite her reasons, it’s true that you’ll need your idols to start acting alone before long.
You pull up the details of Kaiba’s job. Yoshikawa Sailing doesn’t have a particularly bad or great reputation, you’ll just have to hope for the best.

“Uwaaa, yours are so big,” says a blonde-haired girl with short twin-tails, “I hope they don’t put my pictures next to yours…”
She pats her chest, then frows – flat. “At least I’m slimmer though,” adds the girl.

“Ehehe….” says Kaiba, chucking nervously as she moves around the cabin, “Where do I…?”
She’s holding her swimwear in her hands, a flimsy bikini.

The blonde-haired girl shrugs, “Just right here is fine, I guess.”

“Eh?” says Kaiba, eyeing the various portholes and windows, nothing to say about the open door to the deck, “But they’ll…”

“Peek?” says the blonde-haired girl, shrugging, “Probably. They might see a nipple, who cares? That’s the life of a gravure idol, I guess.”

Kaiba clutches the bikini to her chest, “I’m not a…”

The blonde-haired girl rolls her eyes, “Come on… With boobs like those?” she says, shaking her head knowingly, “It’s a matter of time, girly. The offers will come and they’ll be too good to ignore. Happens all the time.”
“Before you’ll know it, you’ll be doing poses like this,” she says, eyes rolling up and sticking her tongue out, then laughs to herself.

Kaiba looks away, feeling like she’s staring at something indecent.

The blonde-haired girl laughs, “You’re fun to tease, y’know?” she says, “I’m Yanase Kioko, by the way.”

“Ah,” says Kaiba, still looking away, “Kaiba Aoi. Matsuno Inc. Idol Agency.”

“Hmm?” says Yanase, moving closer and trying to place herself in Kaiba’s line of sight.

Kaiba turns away, opting to look at a wall.

“Arara?” says Yanase, moving towards that wall.

Kaiba looks away again, lips pressed into a firm line.

“I think I know…” says Yanase, moving into view only for Kaiba to look away again.

Yanase jumps in front of Kaiba and points an accusing finger, “Loner!”

“Hueh!?” says Kaiba, looking while simultaneously trying not to look at the girl.

“The sheltered way of a girl who has never known girl bonding!” shouts Yanase.

“No… I…” tries Kaiba.

“Look at me!” says Yanase, placing herself in front of Kaiba again.

Instructed, Kaiba manages to hold eye contact for a good five seconds before looking away.

Yanase sighs, then nods sagely, “You’ll never survive in the industry,” she says, “I suppose it’s my responsibility as your senior to ensure you get the proper education to last…”
Her hands are raised threateningly, lined up with Kaiba at chest height.

“Eh? What?” says Kaiba, holding up her hands while she slowly steps backwards.

A sliding door opens, then closes. “Bedroom’s free,” says another girl, a red-haired woman, who came up from deeper in the ship.
She carries the half-lidded gaze of somebody whose simply tired of it all.

“W-w-what for?” says Kaiba, panic racing across her face.

“Changing, of course,” says the red-haired girl, raising an eyebrow.

“Eh? But… she said…” tries Kaiba, looking towards Yanase.

The red-haired girl stares at the way Yanase has her hands held out.
“Kioko,” says the red-haired girl, frowning, “You’re gonna get reported, y’know?”

Yanase folds her arms behind her head, “I was just messing around,” she says, “Ehe~”

“Just get changed,” says the red-haired girl to Kaiba, “They want to shoot soon.”

Kaiba nods and hurries towards the bedroom to change.

-----------

The three girls sit beside each other out on the deck, painfully aware of how badly the entire crew is staring at them.
Kaiba has chosen to cover up with a jacket, while Yanase is indulging in the attention.
The red-haired girl is smoking a cigarette, watching the waves coast past as the yacht sets out to deeper water – sailboat in tow.

Kaiba shifts her gaze left and right, “They’re staring….” she says quietly.

Yanase shrugs, “So?” she says, “Let them. That’s our job, y’know?”
Her phone is placed face-down beside her, a pink phone-strap dangling.

“I know, but still…” replies Kaiba carefully.

Yanase’s face darkens, an empty stare towards the distant horizon, “People won’t be calling you cute forever, y’know. You’ll get older and taller and then those damn lolicons won’t care about you anymore… whatever fans you have will get bored with the usual… your jobs will dry up… and all that’s left are the increasingly perverted jobs…. haaa….”

“Kioko, your true feelings are showing…” says the red-haired girl, taking a pull of her cigarette.

“Oh?” says Yanase, slapping her cheeks, then smiling, “Ehe~ Sorry, Mu-chan~”
Her phone buzzes, a text message. She picks it up.

“Your boyfriend?” asks the red-haired girl.

“Nah, we broke up,” says Yanase, tapping away on her phone with a smile, “So, I’m just keeping my options open at the moment. So much work sometimes.”

Kaiba Aoi – a girl whose daily message count is in the single digits.
Outside of a brief stint with a certain con-artist that is.
“It’s not that bad, is it?” asks Kaiba.

Yanase nods half-heartedly, “Well, most of them are low maintenance, but there’s two that are kinda clingy. I would’ve ghosted those already, but they’re like super rich,” she says as she types out another response.

Cigarette pinched between two fingers, the red-haired girl leans an elbow on the railing of the ship, “How’d your date go? The Matsuno guy?”

“I’m not seeing him till tomorrow, Mu-chan,” says Yanase, sending off another message, “You’re thinking of Serizawa. It was okay, he bought me a bracelet. Kinda lame.”

The red-haired girl exhales heavily through her nose, “Can’t keep track sometimes…”

“Mu-chan, you back together with your ex yet?” asks Yanase, eyes fixed on the screen of her phone.

“No,” replies the red-haired girl, “He still can’t cope with me doing shoots like this. Even though he met me on the set of a shoot just like this. Hypocrite bastard.”

“Ehehe~ Jealous types are the wooooorst~” says Yanase.

Lionel Taylor claps his hands together, “Alright, girls. We’re in position. Get ready.”

The girls chorus acknowledgement.

Rolled 35 + 58 (1d100 + 58) – Success

-----

The shoot itself is a success.
Yoshikawa Sailing’s promotional campaign is off to a good start with this combination of photos and footage.

In truth, things started off rather poorly, with the only direction given being: ‘Just imagine yourself being on your boyfriend’s boat.’
Yanase, the blonde girl, easily accepted the instructions and was found all over the sailboat and yacht with big grins and stretched out in suggestive poses.
The red-haired girl, whose name turned out being Oshiro Mutsiki, was mostly found lounging and relaxing in all kinds of places.

The environment and task so unfamiliar to her, Kaiba had a harder time putting herself on display.
Still, though the initial job asked for actors to highlight the joys of sailing – it wasn’t Kaiba’s personality that ended up on display.

Yoshikawa Sailing’s approach boiled down to: If you want a girl like this – then get a boat.

“…and there we go!” says Yanase, “Added! Now we can chat whenever!”

The three of them are once again standing on the docks in their usual attire.

A taxi-driver stands beside his car in the distance, impatiently tapping his foot.

Kaiba nods, looking down at the two new names in her Line account, then smiles, “Thank you, Yanase-san.”

“Networking is important, y’know!” says Yanase, arms firmly planted in her side, ‘Just call me Kioko.”

“Okay,” says Kaiba, nodding again, “Thank you, Kioko-chan.”

Oshiro, the red-haired girl, speaks up. “Good luck out there, Kaiba-chan,” says Oshiro with a casual wave, “Bye, bye.”

Kaiba bows and says goodbye, then returns to the office using the taxi.

Both Yanase and Oshiro stand in silence for a moment.

“…If I had boobs like that, I’d be on every magazine cover,” says Yanase.

Oshiro sighs, “Yes, yes, breast complex. Let’s go, we got to return to the agency.”

That makes sense, I've a tendency of lowballing the ages of flat girls. Although, it seems pretty retarded to be an idol manager and date an idol yourself - you'd think that knowing full well the impact of a scandal that comes from idols in relationships, one would avoid it.

In the end you decided on recording the first livestream on a soccer field.
As far as participants go you put out a statement that any and all idols are welcome to join this group activity that’ll focus on healthy exercise.

Kaiba declined saying she has a meeting to discuss the restart of her own livestream.
Chigusa Iki can’t participate since her own idol debut doesn’t happen until tomorrow.

Despite that, plenty of idols mentioned that they’d love to participate.
Mostly girls from different generations – people you haven’t interacted with.
Watase Yoko also applied, mentioning how skipping work for an afternoon is all the reason she needs.

Still, two full teams of eleven members wasn’t likely to happen.
Instead, with a total of ten participants, you settle for general practice and a friendly five versus five skirmish.
That should fill up the schedule of the livestream nicely.

Finally, you receive an offer from Hada Midori, the eternal assistant to the CEO, saying how she could probably convince a different manager within the company to commit a high-profile idol to your livestream.

A collaboration like that is sure to draw big numbers to Enatsu’s debut and might even get her some fame by association.
However, there’s no doubt in your mind that this favour is one Hada-san is sure to cash in on in the future.

----

Decision: Hada Midori’s Offer
>1 - Borrow a high-profile idol through Hada Midori’s connections (Owe a favour, roll for 0-3 fame gain)
>2 - Decline the offer.

Short update with hopefully more to come later, need to get my wisdom teeth pulled first.

Description of looks and personality will suffice, stats aren't needed.

Like this?

Small aside

Good: I did not have to get my wisdom teeth pulled
Bad: This is because they discovered some kind of bacteria in my gums that'll cause me to lose all my teeth in a few years time.
So instead, they took a mini-torch / laser and tried to burn out as much bacteria as they could and now I've got a double dose of antibiotics to take.
I've always taken perfect care of my teeth, but they said it's largely dependant on genetics if you are susceptible to this -- so they said I was just unlucky.

Generating many characters at once is actually quite easy.
Even images with ten or twenty people are easy to generate.

It works great... for one-offs.

There's zero chance you'll be able to generate a picture with that many characters again and have them look exactly the same.
Character consistency becomes a problem as early as two characters.

Tempting as the offer may be, you don’t want to owe Hada Midori a favour over something like this.
If she can really move heaven and earth like Matsui Tomo said, then it might be better to save such a favour for an emergency.
Or, remembering Matsui’s warning, be certain to not owe Hada-san – ever.

You’ve taken the morning that suddenly opened up to talk Enatsu Mari through today’s gameplan.

“Alright,” you say, “You got all that?”

Enatsu nods carefully, “I think so…”

“Run it back to me,” you say, folding your arms.

“We’ll go to Tokyo Shukyu-Dan where we rented a large field. We bring a van that’ll have all the girls that wanted to join. Then we’re getting some training from a coach. After we’ll play a match,” she says, counting off the items on her hands.

“And what will you be doing during all this?” you say.

“Talking to the idols and coach with a microphone,” replies Enatsu.

“That’s it,” you say, patting her head, “Make sure to keep an eye on the camera, this is your debut after all!”

“Ehehe~” says Enatsu as you pat her, “I’m kinda nervous…”
She holds her fists in front of her, “It’ll be fine!” she says, mostly to herself, then turns to you, “My parents, brothers, and sisters will be all be watching!”

“Eeeh!?,” you say, exaggerating your response a bit, “We better work hard then!”

Enatsu nods eagerly, “Mhmm!” she says, then jump to her feet.
She begins to wave her arms about, “Shake the nerves out!” she says, then kicking her legs in the empty air before her, “Like the coach used to say!”

“I’m sure your parents will be happy no matter what,” you say, trying to calm her down a bit.

Enatsu nods again, “They’re super happy I became an idol!” she says, “I used my idol money to make everyone happy!”
She pumps her fists into the air, breathing wildly, “I’m not gonna let anyone down! Oooooooh!”

“Ooooh!” you echo, raising a fist of your own.

She flinches then, a hand clutching her stomach, “…Ack…” she says, confused, “Stomach-ache?”

“You okay?” you say, “Maybe just take it easy until we get there? Did you eat something bad?”

Enatsu laughs quietly, “I dunno,” she says, clutching her stomach as she eases herself down into a chair, “Maybe?”
She forces a big grin on her face, “Don’t worry, manager-san!” she says, “I won’t let something like this get me down!”
>>

You nod but can’t help but be concerned.
Today’s a big day for her, so perhaps something like this was inevitable.

Still, it’s time to go.

---------

You and Enatsu drive towards Tokyo Shukyu-Dan in your trusty Renault Twingo.
All the other idols, including Watase Yoko, ride in a rented van driven by the camera man.

Eventually, you arrive at your destination and stretch a bit at you exit your car.

The van carrying the other idols arrives only a moment later and over a half a dozen beautiful girls exit the car.
They left the car with giddy excitement, but that quickly faded.
Perhaps they were expecting a massive stadium hosting a perfect field surrounded by row after row of benches.

Tokyo Shukyu-Dan isn’t that, not even close.
It’s just a soccer field surrounded by some bleachers.
A proper stadium would’ve not only been impossible to get on short notice, but far too expensive as well.

Tokyo Shukyu-Dan is happy to host your idols for the low, low price of free marketing.
Yes, you’re paying them in exposure.

When Matsui called them and mentioned that you were doing a special broadcast to encourage today’s youth to move more and engage in sports, Tokyo Shukyu-Dan was in.
They figured that offering up their field would be a great way to advertise their club to the hordes of fans freshly charmed by the sweet talk of their favourite idols.

Come to Tokyo Shukyu-Dan with your sudden desire for exercise!
Your precious idol exercised here, you know?

The girls all make their way to the locker rooms where a prepared set of soccer gear awaits them.

After a while, they begin to trickle out of the locker room with a messy-haired blonde girl being the first of them.
It seems like she hasn’t bothered to comb her hair or adjust her make-up.

She makes her way to large, grassy field and simply allows herself to fall down.
The well-cared for grass of the soccer field is cool to the touch, earning it a sigh of relief from the blonde idol.

The weather has improved a bit since this morning, but it’s still rather cloudy.

You squat down next to her, “We’re here to exercise, y’know?” you tease.

The girl laughs, then spreads her arms and legs wide, moving them over the cool grass, “I know, I know,” she says, stretching until she utters a small sound of bliss, “It’s been so lang since I’ve touched grass. Always in the office all day, cameras, dance studios.”

“Fufufu~” you say, “I see, so you joined my little event in order to relax?”

The girl laying down on the grass holds up her hands lazily, “You got me.”

Before you departed, you received a full list of all the idols that’ll be in attendance – including pictures.
Your quick study of that sheet is already proving useful.
“Ensumi Misako-san, right?” you say carefully.

“That’s me,” says Ensumi, then rolls over to a new patch of grass, “Haaa…”

“If the coach sees you slacking off like this he might work you harder, y’know?” you say.

“Geh…” says the prone Ensumi, then slowly, with many groans of complaint, gets up.
She was down there for not even five minutes, but managed to acquire an impressive bedhead.

“I’m always ready to work hard,” says Ensumi.
Well-said, but not that convincing coming from somebody with a bunch of grass stuck to their chest.

“My name’s Nagata Miho,” you say, bowing, “Thank you for joining today’s livestream event.”

“Thanks for having me,” says Ensumi, “I appreciate you getting me out of the office.”

What appears to be the coach exits from the male locker room, sweeping his gaze over the fresh recruits he’ll be training today.

“Uwah,” says Ensumi, tip-toeing her way to a goal, “Maybe if I’m the goalkeeper I won’t have to run a lot…”

In the wide, open soccer field, the girl attempts to sneak towards the goalposts.

You should probably meet up with the coach.

As you turn and try to walk you almost walk into somebody.

“Careful now,” says a familiar voice.

>>5696946

If the voice didn’t give it away, you would’ve known who it was the moment you slowly looked up, only to realize there was still almost a foot of girl left to look up to.

“Watase-san,” you say, nodding your head.

Watase leans in, towering over you, “This again?”

“Y-yoko-chan,” you say, taking a step back, “Thanks for coming.”

“Well, I did owe you that favour,” she says, throwing in a light shrug, “So, I felt like I had to.”

But she joined voluntarily, right?
It’s not like you explicitly requested her to join!
Does this mean your favour is spent now?

Your concern must’ve shown on your face, because moments later Watase chuckles loudly.

“I’m just messing with you, it’s fun to see you all flustered like that,” she says, then plants her hands in her side as she looks towards the open field where all the idols are gathering, “Getting sweaty with a bunch of the cutest girls that Tokyo has to offer? To hell with favours, I’d pay to be here.”

Geh.

Watase then looks you over, clearly disapproving of the office attire you’re wearing, “You’re not joining us, manager-san?”

“No,” you say, waving a dismissive hand, “I’ll be working off camera. This is all for my idol’s debut after all…”

“That’s a shame,” says Watase, “Suppose we’ll have to get sweaty together some other time…”

Your face blushes a fierce red.
A quick check of your surroundings confirms that it seems like you’re out of earshot of the other people here.

You lean in and speak in an aggressive whisper, “Yoko-san!” you say, “You can’t go saying things like that!? What if somebody heard?”

Watase shrugs, “I don’t mind if they hear,” she says.

The playful grin on her face tells you she’s just saying those things to get a reaction out of you.
It’s probably best to simply change the subject.

“That aside….” you say, whispering as you eye your surroundings, “There’s something I need to talk about…”

Watase folds her arms, “Okay, have at it.”

You were being secretive, right? It was plain to see!
“Not here!” you hiss, glancing around again, “Can we meet up after work?”

“Manager-san…” says Watase, faking shock, “Are you asking me out on a date?”

“Hah!?” you say, “No! It’s work stuff!”
“Sort of,” you add meekly.

“Hooo….” says Watase, her usual grin on her face, “Fine…. But!”
She leans in towards you, holding up a finger, “I get to pick the place.”

“Watase-san, please. It won’t take long, we can even talk about it in my office at work,” you say.

“Ah. You called me Watase-san again,” says Watase, “Now I’m not going.”

How childish!

You sigh. It’s going to be some place weird, isn’t it?
“Just make sure it’s some place private, okay?” you say.
If other people overheard what happened, then they might end up drawing their own conclusions like Kaiba did.

“Private?” replies Watase, smirking, “You can be sure of that.”
She looks down in thought for a moment, “Should probably make a reservation…”

“It’s just a short chat,” you say, tiring of it all, “Like five minutes at most.”

“Do you have like a…” says Watase, gesturing towards you with a hand, “A nice dress…?”

“Well, I just had a brand-new dress sized the other da…” you begin, then stop and shake your head, “Yoko-chan, just a short chat! I only need to clear something up. Okay?”

Watase seems determined to blow this out of proportion.

Deciding to put your frustration on display, you sigh loudly.

Last time you two spoke at length, at the bistro during a lunch, Watase was actually pretty fun to be around.
However, it seems like she’s back to her usual, overly flirty self now.

Even if you wanted to join her somewhere after work, you don’t have the time.
Enatsu Mari’s debut will have concluded then, but there’s still plenty of work to do afterwards.
You’ll have to gather data on how things went, analyse it, and have meetings to decide how you’ll proceed from there.

When all that is done, you still have Chigusa Iki’s debut tomorrow.

Finally, you remember what Kitabayashi said to you last week.
Watase has a certain reputation so you can’t be seen hanging out with her again – people will talk.
Normally that’d be whatever, right? Let people talk.

But it’ll be the exact kind of talk that you’re trying to get rid of!
If Kaiba somehow hears how you went to some fancy place that requires a nice dress together with Watase Yoko, then it’ll be impossible to talk her out of her strange convictions.

You can’t be nice all the time or you’ll get caught up other people’s plans.
It’s time to put your foot down and grow a spine.

“You know what?” you say, turning and then walking off, “Forget it.”

The smirk drops from Watase’s face, clearly caught off-guard.
“Come on…” she says, following, “Don’t be like that. You need to talk to me, right?”

“I did, but I’ll figure it out by myself,” you say, continuing your march towards the coach, “You clearly don’t want to help.”

“Girls like you would usually like that… getting dressed up …some nice dinner somewhere,” says Watase, still following, “I’d still listen to whatever you wanted to talk about…”

Suddenly, you stop and turn to face Watase. “I don’t want to play around!” you snap in a loud whisper, “I have questions that I need answers to!”

“Don’t be angry,” says Watase, holding out a set of warding hands, whispering as well, “I just wanted to spoil you a little, y’know?”

“I don’t want to be spoiled. I’m trying to do my job here, Watase-san!” you hiss.

“I told you to call me Yok--” begins Watase.

Watase-san,” you say firmly, interrupting her, then walk off.

Watase sighs, “Okay, okay,” she says, following you again, “I’ll stop by your office after work, okay?”

Eh? For real? Just like that?

“Hmpf,” you say, looking over your shoulder, “6 PM will do, don’t be late.”
It was about time she gave you a bit of respect!

The sky overhead begins to clear up, showering the soccer field in the sun’s warmth.
High on victory, you march towards the coach standing on the sideline.

You were expecting an old man, but the coach is actually fairly young.
In his late twenties, maybe? He’s wearing a baseball cap and a tracksuit.
Besides that, he also seems to be holding a clipboard with today’s schedule.

He performs a shallow bow as you approach, “Good afternoon,” he says, “I’m Muratagi Tetsu and I’ll be overseeing your event today.”

You bow in kind, “I’m Nagata Miho from the Matsuno Inc. Idol Agency. Thank you for watching over us today.”

“Please to meet you,” he says, then points towards the distant camera man with his pen, “I understand you’ve got some special circumstances with this event. Is everything ready on your end?”

You look towards the distant camera man, who seems to be putting together his equipment and messing with some wires.

“Can you give us like fifteen more minutes?” you say, turning towards the coach.

“Take all the time you need,” he says, then looks down at his schedule, “Meanwhile, I’ll get the training gear.”

“Okay, thank you,” you say, bowing.

The man bobs his head and leaves towards what you assume is the equipment storage.
>>
>>5697429

You raise a hand to shield your eyes against the sun.
The weather has really picked up. Kaiba’s job must be done by now though.

There are so many girls here you’ve never spoken to before.

A blue-haired girl has just decided to lay down next to Ensumi Misako.
Both of them sleeping in the goal, hoarding a bit of shade supplied by nearby bleachers.
You recall from your participant sheet that the blue-haired girl is called Daigo Naomi.
She seems to have spruced up her outfit with some kind of cosplay flair – small wings and little horns.

A set of twins are currently helping each other stretch.
They’re called Miyata Maru and Miyata Mine, if you remember correctly.
Other than the shade of their green hair, they’re almost entirely identical.

A different set of girls, a pink-haired girl named Maeda Rei, and a brown-haired girl named Handa Ako, are currently passing a ball between them that they’ve found somewhere.
Maeda has fairly good ball-control, but Handa definitely seems more like the indoor type.
Before long, Handa Ako pats the sweat from her face with a handkerchief and excuses herself.

Maeda shrugs and opts to juggle the soccer ball.
She makes it to fourteen before it hits her foot at an odd angle, and she has to run after it.

Your gaze then passes to a silver-haired girl.
She’s staring into the distance with an aloof expression on her face.
There’s no way around it. She’s drop-dead gorgeous. The mere sight of her is enough to invoke envy.
Takashima Nikki. A girl you know has done nothing but modelling jobs.

Finally, there’s a girl that’s somehow even paler than Kaiba, Kuno Hina.
She’s tucked away in the “Dugout”, the place where players usually sit when they’re on the bench in a game.
Kuno Hina is wearing a wide-brimmed hat should cover almost the entirety of her, yet she’s hidden away in the most shadowy area of all.
Makes you wonder why she’d even come to an event like this…

Getting familiar with all of them would probably take forever, but a few should work.

The rest will have to settle for basic introductions.

A felloe cosplay idol could be handy for future cross promotional activities with OUR cosplay idol. The twins are sporty (probably?) and could be handy for something like videos where we test two different diets or exercise techniques on two very similar people and see who gets better results.

META: Why so many characters we probably won't see much?
I've shared in the past how you can sell the contract of your idol, the opposite is also true: you can buy the contract of other idols.
In that sense, this is basically a "showcase" for what girls are active in your agency.
If you've taken a liking to a specific idol because of their personality, theme, or implied skills then you can request full stats from Matsui at a later time.

Auditions will always be the most cost-effective way to get new idols, but the results are dependant on RNG.
This offers an alternative to that, but don't be surprised if the cost of a single, specific idol is the same or more expensive than a full audition.

Your direct your attention to the pale girl, Kuno Hina.

Sheltered from the sunlight like one would hide from an enemy, she sits in the shadow of the dugout, idly playing with large, golden cross dangling from her neck.
Wrapped around her wrists and fingers are a variety of occult jewellery.
Atop her head sits a wide-brimmed straw hat, her primary defence against the sun, covering her black hair that’s been fashioned into a braid.

You approach with a casual wave, lowering yourself into the dugout using the adjoining stairs.
There’s a heavy smell of freshly cut grass here, it’s source quickly identified as the concrete floor is covered with it.
Must’ve been blown in here by the wind when the club prepared the field for today’s event.

“Kuno Hina-san?” you ask, entering the dugout.

“In the flesh,” she says, “I presume you’re the one that arranged this event. The one known as Nagata Miho-san?”
She busies her hands by playing with a strange symbol on one of her bracelets.

“Indeed, I’m Nagata Miho,” you say, adding a shallow bow, “It’s a pleasure to meet you.”
You glance out of the dugout, you’re almost eye-level with the grass.
There’s no denying that’s notably cooler down here though.

“We’re going to get started soon,” you say, looking up towards the sky, “Are you okay to start? Is the sun a problem?”

“Everything’s well, I’ve taken the sun into consideration, I just try to minimize my exposure,” she says, “I’m afraid I get sunburn quite easily, you understand.”

“Oh, were you counting on the cloudy weather to last?” you say.

“No, I arrived prepared to make the necessary sacrifice,” she says, “I act simply in accord with what fate has dictated.”

“Fate?” you ask.

Kuno Hina adjusts her hat, “I’ve had my fortune told not too long ago, you see, I was told to expect great changes in my career. On the day of your invitation my horoscope informed me of impending opportunities for growth. Naturally, I accepted.”

“Oh, well,” you say, somewhat caught off-guard, “I’m glad fate has led you here, I suppose. If the sun becomes a problem, just take a break, alright?”

Kuno Hina nods, “I belief I’ll be fine. Was it not Nietzsche that said: ‘The true man wants two things: danger and play’?”

You chuckle quietly, then scratch your cheek, “I don’t know, did he?”
>>
>>5698470

“A ballgame in a hostile environment fits the saying nicely, I should say,” adds Kuno Hina, getting up.

It’s hard to get a handle on this girl, but she’s been fiddling with the cross a lot, so…
“Hopefully the gods have fated for you to get through this without a sunburn,” you say, adding in a laugh.

“Religion is the sign of the oppressed. It is the opium of the people,” replies Kuno Hina, running a hand over her cross, “I wear it as a reminder.”

“But… astrology?” you mumble.

“Receiving guidance is different from being led,” says Kuno Hina with a small smile, then looks towards the field, “You said they were about to start?”

“Ah, eh, yes,” you say, “If you’ll please head up…”

Kuno Hina nods, adjusts her wide-brimmed hat, then joins the other girls.

It’s almost impressive how many quotes she managed to fit into such short conversation.
You get the feeling any lengthy chat with her would get tiresome indeed.
Still, she didn’t seem like a bad person.

---------

Afternoon sun now warming the grass, nearly all the girls have gathered on the field.
The camera man at the sidelines gives you a thumbs-up – ready to go.
There’s an almost tangible feeling of anticipation in the air, the idols are chatting amongst themselves.

Emerging from the equipment storage, the coach drags behind him a cartful of training equipment.
Cones, pinnies (brightly coloured vest to separate teams), training markers, small hurdles, and, of course, plenty of soccer balls.

According to the schedule you’ll be starting off with training and have a short scrimmage after.
First, you’ll need Enatsu Mari to kick-off the livestream and do a brief introduction of all the players.
After a quick headcount, you notice you’re still two members short.

Ah. Two girls are still splayed out on the green canvas, napping underneath the goalpost.

The other girls take notice and respond with a mixture of giggles and sighs.

The coach is already setting up whatever training he has planned for the idols.
Some hurdles here, cones there.
An intricate training course materializes before you.

You hurry towards the two napping girls.
Ensumi Misako, the blonde girl with the bedhead, notices your approach and quickly gets up, “Eh, Let’s gooo!” she says wide-eyed, hurrying towards the others.
She’s not fooling anybody.

The final napper only moves once you stand almost directly over her, deepening the shadow cast over her by the nearby bleachers.
She grumbles, then waves a hand – indicating for you to stop blocking the sun.

That’s a first.

Glancing over your shoulder, you see that all the other girls are waiting.
You clear your throat loudly, “Ehum…” you say, folding your arms.

“…Hmm?” comes the reply.

Her name comes to you easily, the succubus cosplay thing kind of stood out on the list of participants.

“Daigo Naomi-san,” you say, “We’re about to get started…”

“…Eh? What’s about? As in about like five minutes?” says Daigo, rolling over.

“As in about right now,” you reply.

She leans on an elbow, giving you an angelic smile despite the succubus cosplay, “Five minutes more?” she purrs.

You reply with a flat stare, “No,” you say.

The girl frowns, “Tsk,” she says, clicking her tongue, “That usually works.”

Her manager must be male.

Daigo sighs loudly.
It’s the teenage ‘If I have to’ sigh.

She gets up sighs and again, then fumbles with her cosplay, “Stupid wings,” she says, pulling the outfit back into shape.
One of the ear prosthetics has come loose, making one pointy ear crooked – she adjusts it.

Daigo lumbers towards the rest of the group with all the enthusiasm of a sentenced man heading to the chopping block.

--------

Everyone is present. All the equipment is ready.
Enatsu Maru is standing with microphone in hand, understandably nervous.

You take up your spot next to the camera man, who hands you a tablet.
On screen is the mobile app of your usual streaming platform, showing the broadcast.

Involuntarily, you gasp.

There are several thousands of viewers already even though there’s nothing shown beside a waiting screen and some background music.

You did some marketing, sure, but nothing to get these kinds of numbers.
How’d this even happen?

Ah.

A glance towards the idols tells you all you need to know.
They’re taking selfies even now, pictures of them in their soccer outfits alongside other idols.
Probably posting them to Instagram, twitter, or whatever other platform they’re active on.

Some of these girls must be quite famous if they’re able to pull such a crowd.

A countdown appears in the broadcast, five minutes remain until the scheduled time.
Every idol here has received a sheet detailing the script for the livestream, but you take the five minutes to run them through it again.

It’s time to begin.

By the way, have you ever thought of making a Visual Novel out of this quest, QM?
>>
>>5699658
I have, but when I looked into visual novels it turned out that it takes effort and I'm not about that.
Jokes aside, there's too many extra parts like art, music, programming that I'm no good at.

AI art is perfect for the backgrounds in visual novels as they are recurring and don't change.
It's not that great for characters which have to be consistent with only maybe their facial expressions changing.
To make something like a visual novel work I'd have to outsource things like art or music -- which is expensive.
Programming I could probably do myself as there's "Visual Novel Engines" that basically do it all for you and you only need to write the dialogue / pop-up text.

I say all the above as a man that has never played / read a visual novel, so I might be wrong on some things.

All that aside, today was a terrible day, but I'll try to get the update out -- it might take me a while as I just got home.
>>
>>5699766
For what it's worth, the level of portrait consistency you've been achieving in the quest is imo sufficient for a VN.
Sorry to hear about your day.
>>
>>5699766
Music would be indeed something you'd have to outsource but so far, I think you're doing a pretty good job with AI art.

Maybe you could make it work with copyright-free music? Imo, this has everything to become a VN or a resource management game.
>>
eeh... but wouldn't a va be more story centered? part of the fun here is managing, but management games usually don't have the fun story parts. You would need to find the middle point between those two
>>
>>5699901
>Maybe you could make it work with copyright-free music?
Yeah, there's also AI music which is getting better by the day.

I could always flesh out the game and use the AI stuff as placeholders while I save up for real music or art.
Would I have to put in date mechanics? As mentioned I'm not very familiar with VNs.

Maybe use some AI to generate voice-over clips of brief japanese or just hire people from Fiverr.
To get those small "Sound bites" that you get when interacting with characters in a game.
You wouldn't use full voice-over for every line, but just things like: a laugh, a disapproving hum, surprise (eh?), etc

The idea is growing on me, but it does seem like a lot of work.
>>
>>5699946
>Would I have to put in date mechanics?
Nah, VNs don't have date mechanics in the first place. You're thinking of dating sims, that's a different beast.
(Also for a manager to date their idols would be inappropriate)
>>
>>5699946
It is. Those of us who have been here long enough remember a certain quest that raised $20k to turn it into a VN. It never delivers. It is bad idea.
>>

>a certain quest that raised $20k to turn it into a VN.
That's honestly impressive, but it sucks that it didn't deliver. I dunno, QM - worst case scenario you can simply draft a MVP and sell your idea to some game company.

The first time I saw this quest I honestly thought it was a testing ground for an upcoming game, that's why I asked if you were interested in making one
>>
>>5700017
>The first time I saw this quest I honestly thought it was a testing ground for an upcoming game
It's actually the other way around. I started this quest after playing idol manager games.

The "Idolmaster" series actually started as a game before becoming anime / music / etc almost two decades ago.
I also know of a game literally called "Idol Manager" which also has both management and story elements.

So the idea itself isn't new.

>>5699988
Damn.

>for a manager to date their idols would be inappropriate
I meant more in the sense of how we are currently having Nagata explore dating options when they do arise
We've only really had one though. I've introduced some characters that are "date-able", but I never outright mentioned it.

Main thing I've noticed so far is that:
If you play a VN and the art, music, setting, names, etc is all Japan-ish then hearing them speak English is absolutely jarring.
Not sure if it's just me since I've always watched anime with subs, I'd assume it's easier on somebody used to dubs.
Personally, I really want to use Japanese VAs, but I might forgo voice-over entirely as it is too expensive and settle for pre-made gasps and other little noises.

Furthermore, there's a mountain of assets you need.
So much art, music, sfx, UI graphics, voice-over, etc.
All that's is going to be placeholder. I have no skill with any of that.

That being said, the initial aesthetic or "vibe" I got from a VN played a major part in whether I stuck with it.
A game might have a great story, but I might not even get to that part if the art-style / theme puts me off.
So my plan is to start with AI stuff, but gradually slide towards quality pre-made or commissioned stuff when I can afford it.
If you do happen to know of a great collection of pre-made assets that I could use for this, let me know.

My impression from this quest has been that people like management mechanics, but mostly if they're used on somebody they feel is worth managing.
Therefore, rather than complete RNG to generate the idols, I'll have a large set of pre-made idols that I'll gradually expand.
This way I can ensure each idol has a proper background and storyline.

I'll start an itch.io and gradually release new versions there.
I don't plan on a Kickstarter or anything like that, I can't handle that kind of responsibility.

Before I commit to such a large undertaking, I want to create a prototype using a side-story I had planned for an interlude.
Mostly to see if I even like creating a VN like this as I would have to enjoy working on it for me to actually complete it because I am a man without discipline.
The story will be dull, full of stupid jokes, and I give you full permission to come to this thread and complain about me wasting your time if you do end up playing it.
>>
>>5701941
I don't think I'd like to see a VN. I like the quest for what it is. The main reason is that interaction with other players will always be more fun to me than the railroad nature of VNs.

The planned interlude basically revolved around a dream that Enatsu Mari is having.
She's been playing some weird mobile games and seen some videos that has her dreaming about her friends and familiars in a medieval setting.
Enatsu is tasked with (I know, I know) beating the demon king. It's all super generic, but it seemed fun to me at the time.

5701941
Similar what >>5701953 said, a VN is a written story with an A or B or how many you want paths, here a big part of the fun is the managing, picking job based on the stats we have, chosing idols, using favors in a flexible way, etc stuff you can't do in a VN or a indie videogame in general
You *could* make a VN of the quest as a re telling with different endings if you want, I would play that.
I just don't think the format we have here would work as VN
>>
>>5701941
I agree with the other anon: while I'd playa VN you made, I'm here to play quests because I like quests: fluid, dynamic, customizable with write-ins, and played with a community of players.

The VN would remove the multiple players aspect so in that regard you'd have my full support because that's simply what puts me off from most of the quests lmao
80% of this basket weaving forum is full of dumb retards and larpers and if I were to fail on a storyline or budget management, I'd rather fail due to my own lack of skill than to the dumbness of other players. I will never, ever forget the fact that we wasted a month on Emiko instead of cutting her short due to bullshit votes. Yes, I'm all roiling rage and rancor.
However, I do agree with everyone else that the task is simply monumental and very time consuming. Given that you're on a, uh... how should I put it without sounding like an apathetic, unfeeling monster?...well, a time limit of sorts, I'd rather have you focus on the quest for the time being
