You wake up around 9, having not stayed up crazy late.
Lumsden keeps the ship over the ocean at night, so you're not at Dunlivin yet.

A plate of onigiri have been brought to your room. The rice is seasoned, and they are stuffed with kaprosuchus meatball. Not bad.

You have your updated JOURNAL
https://trust-a-goblin.fandom.com/wiki/Journal

And you have the run of the ship.

Also, what is stopping us from simply paying back 'The Old Guard' the money the company owes? We owe them 5000g, but we have 9250g just in our pockets and a 20'000g per month min-income, on paper. What's our wage outlay, can we afford to get these guys off our back?
>>
>>5563819
We thought about it, but it'd still be giving money to the OG that will inevitably go to finance their stuff like, say, having potions made out of grels. We can't be having that.

You don't have to look for long before you hear Highball's voice. It sounds vehement. It's not an argument but it's a hard discussion. She's in the lounge.

"I'm second in charge of this outfit. I've scouted ahead for a party before there's no way I shouldn't be leading this."

Mike's tone is even. Placating.
"It's not a matter of leadership, Nep. We'll follow your orders, of course but I should coordinate and take point for this. I've spent more time as a tracker and I've had more experience with these sorts of creatures, I also have a silent and long distance weapon."

Karl folds his arms and glances skyward
"I don't even care about status or fighting, but I have the best ears and eyes even for this group and I'm easily the stealthiest. It just makes sense."

Highball smirks and produces Karl's lockpicks
"Didn't notice me grab these."

Karl holds Highball's lockpicks aloft, emotionless
"Found a spare set."

Highball produces a cardboard tube with a pullcord on it.

Karl irritably holds his hand out. His expression is panicked and angry
"Back. Now."

Highball smiles and studies the tube like she didn't hear him

Karl offers her a folded piece of cardstock. Highball's eyes go wide.

They take back each of their own gear. Highball bares her teeth at Karl who works very hard not to do the same back.

Mike whistles through his teeth at them, calming them both down, though it clearly hurt all three of them.

"Sorry, Joonda. We could do with a tie breaker. This is bending us outta shape. We'll all accept whoever you go with."

Karl and Highball nod. Looking slightly ashamed you saw them like that.

You clap a hand on the tall ork's shoulder.
>'I'm trusting this to you, Mike'

The goblins monetarily slump but they nod and smile in time. They know you've made the right choice. They stand in line with Mike.

"Thanks Joonda. We just needed a push in the right direction"

Karl unwraps a lollipop and grins as it clacks into his teeth
"Eyes and ears at the back is equally important, and that way I'm closer to the exit. This should be fine."

Highball puts her hands on her hips and shifts her weight
"Just cause I'm top gob doesn't mean I'm right for this. AIn't nobody survived in the wilds like Mike."

Mike smiles down at Highball
"Make no mistake, Nep. I still answer to you. I'm first into the cave, not first in rank, that's all. I will say though:"

Mike drops down to one knee. He gets head level with each goblin. He puts a large bony hand on each of their shoulders. His face has returned to its default scowl.

"While we're out there in the shit, don't mess with each other's gear. A pissing contest like that is beneath you both"

They both nod.

Karl isn't sure what to do with his hands, but he offers a fist to Highball. She smiles and they do a quick fist bump.

Mike stands up, he does a small smile. Blink and you'll miss it.

"This ship isn't a den, you know? No food chain. No cliques. You don't need to prove your value at all times. We're a unit here."

You interject.
>Like a well oiled set of lockpicks, each has a role. Tension wrench holds the pins in place for other picks to pick them, which in turn allows the wrench to open the lock.

Highball smiles at you and Karl nods thoughtfully. They stand closer to Mike.

You approach Highball, she raises her ears.

>"Other than the boat and explosives, is there anything you'll need? I imagine it'll take long enough you'll bring some rations and water."

Highball thinks

"Nothing springs to mind! Won't even need a lamp or nothing. We all see pretty good in the dark."

Mike shrugs
"Only thing I can think of is that it might be good if we had the other half of the mutterbottle that Lumsden currently has. We shouldn't be talking during this mission and we shouldn't need an extraction. But if there is something we didn't count on, it would be good to be able to stay in touch with you guys."

Karl crunches his lollipop
"Some antivenom, I guess?"

Mike smiles
"Don't worry, With me on point - even if he rolls low, one of us getting bit isn't a possible outcome anymore. Better, just in this case to save out money for another time."

Highball looks a little sheepish
"I know how you feel, Joe. It's not even about that"
Highball places both hands on your heart.

>>5564759
>"What was with how you and Karl were acting? You seemed to get along earlier."
"Something awakens in a gob when it comes to a heist or a mission, Joe. I dunno if it's in our blood or just ingrained into us young but you gotta be the best gob on the mission. Potential and status are everything. You mess up or you don't remind people you're the best you end up serving drinks and cleanin up shmultz, you know."

Karl nods.
"Can't back down. Makes you a wrong number. A bozo."

Highball purses her lips but smiles
"We're gonna do just fine Joe, me and Karl are thick as thieves. The situation just got the better of us. We may be dustouts but we dusted out late. Late teens."

Karl does a small laugh
"Early 20s. I can't be sure it won't happen again but....we'll try and be ready for it. I think we were both caught off guard this time. And the mission isn't in question. I'm just along for the ride. I will do what I can."

Highball offers a *click click* which Karl does an orkish namaste in response to.

>"What can I do to help this team along?"
Highball thinks
"If I got this right, we're not just the ones doing the mission but also making the boom boxes, right"

Mike nods, pouring himself a guava juice.

"So what we're really gonna need is time, I'm thinking. Basically means you're gonna have to be careful about any extra stuff you need from us. Investigations, advice any horizontal bopping. That all detracts from our training time. Simplest solution is probably counting on other folks more for fighting teams and exploring."

Karl does a small smirk
"More time with two of those three? Get this fella a sympathy card."
Karl looks a little surprised he said that out loud.

Highball laughs
"If you can choose us a beat from the autobard, that could help us synch too. It's been good for that in the past. But that's a minor thing. We can probably figure that one."

>"What's the worst case scenario, let's be ready."

Mike thinks on this.
"Well, if their intel is better than we or we're stupid they could be ready for us on the shoreline. I don't think that's possible though. I've gone through all encounters with them and they've got nothing on us unless they have a spy on this crew, which I doubt. Going to just eliminate that as a possibility for now."

Mike finishes his onigiri and licks his teeth.
"Even if they are ready for us, we'll see them before they see us, most likely. We can abort the mission and pull out if we have to. The point is, I'll keep them safe."

Mike thoughtfully loads his pipe.
"No, the OG aren't going to be the issue. In all likelihood our biggest threat will be the Funnel Webs. Like I said before, none of us are getting poisoned, but they might still give us some trouble. If they're wiley enough - and they can be- they might destroy our boat at the end of the mission. If that happens you can't suddenly fly over to pick us up. Old Guard will spot you for sure and they'll send scouts and all sorts. They'll know something is up."

He puts a match to it.
"We'll think of something if it comes to that. I'll keep in touch with you by mutterbottle and we can hide somewhere on the island until you come back to make the drop off - you can collect us then. Short of that we can just swim further out so you can collect us without arousing suspicion. We can all swim well. And well, pajaks can't swim at all."

Mike exhales
"That's absolutely worst case, though. As things currently are."

>"How are you and Burstock going?"

Mike goes to speak quietly, but realises there's no point
"Oh good. Great! Very flirty and easy going. We were a good team tackling that forest together. Closest thing we have to a problem is she wants to uhh give more than she receives. Feels unbalanced to me, but she assures me it's cool."
Mike blushes a little
"Wait, is that want you meant?"

>"Also I know you guys know, but no smoking or spark-making when you're making, packing, carrying, or on a small boat with explosives."

Mike nods, all business.
"Not so much as packing my pipe."

Karl's eyes go wide he stops rocking on his heels.
"Right. That DOES make sense. I'm...sure it'll be fine. Yep."

Highball gives him a look
"You ain't hooked on gaspers, right? Goblin's can't be."

Karl straightens his tie
"Of course not. It's different. It's just...I'll be fine."

Mike nods at Karl
"You can talk to me if there's something I can help with."

"It'll be fine. Forget I said anything."

>"I think the initial friction is mostly over, actually. Jorn's catching up pretty quick."

Karl looks like he's going to say something two or three times, but never gets to it.

Highball smirks and leans toward him
"Were you being sarcastic?"

You hit the button. The jar opens, the needle dips in.

As the song starts, Mike gets a broad grin.
"This takes me back. And elf style song performed by humans. Let's see how three greenskins cover it."

He nods along and begins
"Watch me do my thing
Get lost into my scene."

He leads them through the first section after which the goblins step up and take turns. All three of them sing the chorus.

Their dance steps are all different but all compliment each other. It's harmonious. No one bumps into each other despite the percussive and gestural dancing. You picked a good one.

[TEAM GREEN ARE SYNCHING UP GOOD]

When the song finishes all three of them woop an high five each other.

She had some fire but was a little weird socially. But she had this look...sort of..like when she was just standing there or even when she was talking to somebody she was always thinking about something else."

You go to the training room and get a set in. Mostly pull downs. No real progress but it's good maintenance.

Richter and Burstock are discussing something, they nod to acknowledge your presence.

Burstock taps her lips with her forefinger.
"Yes, it's much clearer now. I remember I had been drinking coconut rum, so the booze sorta snuck up on me. I was so mad at the guy who was rude to Zhenji that I followed him outside to give him a piece of my mind. What was left of it."

Richter nods
"What did you see next?"

Burstock closes her eyes and pushes her shoulders together.
"He pulled a gun on me so I....blasted him with lightning? Like, a BUNCH of lightning. We were on the beach. I had sand in my shoes. I just called down smite after smite on this jerk until he died."

Richter leans in
"Did he explode?"

Burstock looks up at Richter and nods.
"Yeah. YEAH! He did! Sent me flying through the air. No real damage but it knocked the wind out of me and sent me flying. THATS why I woke up in the ocean."

Richter folds her arms and smiles benignly.
"This appears to confirm what we all but knew about that strange azure substance. It is not unreasonable to assume the same potion Surrey now has in her possession is the same one you saw that agent drink."

You focus on your set.

Because you're not levelling up, it makes no real improvement to your strength but it nicely maintains what you have.

You feel the ship descend and descend until you hear the familiar splash down of it landing on the ocean. There is a pleasant *KSSSSSH* as the forward engines power down.

You have arrived in Dunlivin

You walk through the corridors of the ship towards the deck level exit ramp, you run into Richter and Jorn en route who are already talking.

You gesture.
>"You two. With me."

Richter and Jorn have joined the party.
They give each other high and low tens before falling in behind you.

Jorn cranks her shoulder
"Oh man, this party totally makes a venn diagram, hey."

"I do not know what that is. But I do believe you."

"We must protect out beautiful, red headed miracle baby."

"Any trouble we encounter will get...what was it you said?"

Jorn swings some crosses and an uppercut
"Left Right Goodnight"

Richter chuckles.

You are back on the outskirts of Dunlivin. Love that sea air.

You walk from the dock to the beach. It's the closest.

>Ask Jorn if she could have heard the power source in Edgewaters presence? Did she ever see him use his factotum weapon?

Jorn shakes her head
"Nah, he uses some sort of mogspit generator. It's heavy and loud as hell. He has a couple of mooks stand behind him and move it when he fights so he can swing it better."

Jorn puts a finger to her ear.
"Your ice box, though! That rings when I'm real close to it. That makes sense, when I think about it. It's amazing technology keeping food cold like that while being comparatively quiet."

Richter smiles and shakes her head
"The world has changed so much during my pilgrimage."

Jorn nods
"Ah, not so much as you think. This is new to a lot of people, I think. Last 5-7 years sorta thing. Real neophile stuff."

There is a rinkan on the beach. It is not yellow or green like others you've seen but orange almost red. It is large and it's buzzing is deep. Its numerous decorations and nameplate suggests it is not wild.

You approach the rinkan. It makes a cicada like constant buzz. It's nameplate, black metal with white lettering suggests it's name is "Citizen". It's the only decoration that's not a phrase or a logo. It buzzes louder.

As you go to pat it, it suddenly buzzes INCREDIBLY loud. Enough to make you jump back in surprise.

>>5568636
You look around, and sure enough a tall, skinny figure dressed in an oiled overcoat and a straight brimmed gambler hat is making their way towards you down the hill. Their spurs jingle a little and they whistle a tune you almost feel like you know but don't. It just sounds like it should be something.

They stop a few metres from you and raise their head and smile.

>Why the name Citizen?

The woman glances skyward, with her arms outstretched like questioning the sky itself.

"Why 'Shweps'? Said like the beverage but spelt peculiar? Some times something just has the right ring in your shell-like. Some folks wonder if I did it to sound more official when I talk to my faithful six appendaged companion but if we're speakin' Gar's honest truth I just got it from a high quality timepiece of which I am uncommon fond."

Her accent is thickly human. Middle of the middle of the central band. You've never met someone who actually spoke like this in real life before.

>"I apologize for upsetting him. Other rinkans have enjoyed being pet in my experience."

They make a dismissive gesture and walk closer to the rinkan and crouch down in front of it. They scratch the back of it's head and it burbles appreciatively.

"Oh, I've no doubt, sir. No doubt. Especially with your fine riding accoutrements. But a red rinkan is a different sort of critter. Larger, irritable and even faster than normal. Not for amateurs, not that I mean to infer you are one. Nothing like that, but they have a tendency towards a solo bond."

She feeds Citizen an apple
"Now, don't worry. Citizen and other reds ain't gonna attack you, just like any other rinkydink. She flicks her coat back to put her thumbs in her crossed belts. She has a holster on each hip, and a short, curved on one.

"Well now, right at this exact moment I find myself falling back on my most beloved, and if you'll pardon my lack of humility, best suited line of work. First and foremost I am a buckaroo and a breaker. In that regard my tools of office may be my grit and my uncommonly loud whistle."

She unslings the rifle on her back. She practically contact juggles into position, moving almost more like a swordsman, the way she crouches and swooshes.

"This fine repeating rifle is less for my actual job, and is more on account of me travelling on my lonesome in what is, while far from as bad as it gets, still a mite inhospitable for those of not travelling with a muscle wizard or..."

Her eyes widen as she looks over your shoulder. She slings her rifle. She takes her hat off and holds it to her chest.

"Ah. Mrs Tauloppo. We've never met in person but I always admire your husband and the town he ran. I am..so sorry to hear of his passing. I hadn't the nerve to visit Scadam after I heard it was under new management, so to speak."

Jorn nods.
"He was cool, huh? And I actually managed to make the town even worse if you can believe that. These guys dealt with the worst of it and then me and a soldier called Jim Walker have tried to get it back on its feet. I still have some loose ends to tie up."

"Oh, well not as familiar as I'd like to be but sure.."

Shweps takes Jorn's hand carefully and shakes it with both of theirs.

Shweps turns to Richter and curls their bottom lip under their teeth before extending their hand as if feeding an angry bear. They have a delighted smile on their face.

Jorn regards Shwep's hand before taking it and smiling.

Shweps laughs with her mouth still agape.
"Hoh hoh. Gentle as warm molasses. But I can feel that. I bet - I say -I bet you could turn my bones to powder 'fore I could sneeze, couldn'tcha.?"

Jorn finishes the hand shake and does a small, slightly proud exhalation.
"The stories about my kind are often only slightly exaggerated."

Shweps switchers her chew to the other side of her mouth thoughtfully.
"Reckon I mighta seen you once before. I was mustering cattle out past Kiani. You wer emoving in great bounds, maybe 50 yards at a time."

Richter lowers her head and blushes slightly.
"That is..entirely possible"

>"You know Big Jim? Was that herd he was minding yours?"

Shweps does a small laugh
I ain't got no farmstead so no heard of anything is gonna do me a spit of good. No son, I don't own any animals. I just catch em and heard em for folks. Chiefly Zakub farmstead. It's what, among other things, brings me back to Dunlivin, matter of fact. Gotta drive 20 head of Buyfugllian back to Zakub to get their plates cleaned proper. Scuttlebutt is he's gonna have me on deliveries to Scadam after that. Made no sense when I first heard the rumour but if Scadam's on the up and up then that makes a bunch more sense."

Shweps spits to the side. It travels so far you don't see it land.
"Now it's not mine to pry and my line of inquiry by all rights can be shorter than a dwarves dick in ice water but I can't help but wonder why what appears to be a college boy with barely kitten whiskers on his chin is out in the back of beyond with a muscle wizard and a financial advisor at his port and starboard."

She holds her hands up
Your business - I say- your business is yours to know, obviously. Just not a sight you see every day."

QM: Oh, and for the gun fans or curious. Shwep's rifle is basically a slightly chunkier 1855 revolver rifle with a custom grip.

I realise these guns irl fell out of use because they took forever to reload or would sometimes fire all the shots at once with disastrous results. But in this universe, they're legit.

Shweps shrugs and chews.

>"Oh? how much are they? and could I also summon you if I have any cattle-related issue and/or opportunity?"

Shweps stops in their tracks and turn back to you, smiling impishly.

"Thought that might getcha curious."

She reaches into her coat and produces what looks like a large cigar box.

"Summoning is a relatively new initiative. Hired guns like me can't just sit around with both thumbs up our behind waiting for work or bounties to crop up. We gotta do odd jobs to stay above snakes! So, a little company yonder west came up with these handy little things."

The buckaroo opens the box revealing a dozen or more hard carboard tubes with ripcords on them.

"Now, I figure you already seen these used for emergencies or maybe seen the Vanguards use em - they think ONLY they should use em that they ain't for the hoi polloi- but they think - I say- they think a lot of things. Don't mean they're right. Far from, sir. Far from."

She hands you one to hold. It reads 'RHR 003 ETB'
"Folks like me can register with this company. No real names required and we get our own signature flare. No colour and pattern quite alike. So, for folks that can't join a party permanently and can't just wait around. These are like.. payments in advance, you could say."

She takes it back and hold it up
"You rip this little devil and for one boss hoss battle or three normal battles you got me. That means the trollstoppers in my rifle, the dwarfstoppers in my sidearms. When those run out. Boonflasks. After that -you got my blade. If that breaks, I'll spit juice on the bastard and fight tooth and nail on whoever you point me at. My coat is armoured. My blade is coated in burnsauce."

She closes the box
"In regards to the payment. It is 1500 apiece or 3 for 4000 AND I KNOW that may sound steep, sir. But keep in mind if you will, you do not pay for my bullets, healing or other sundries and importantly.."

She gently taps your chest
"I get no cut of any loot. Don't matter if you bag a lich covered in liquid gold then rolled in rubies like an over priced icecream. I ride up. I whoop ass. I skeedaddle. It's the trade off for you me paying me in advance afore knowing if and when you'll need my services. Which, since you mention it - don't gotta be combat. It could be beast work, standovers, hell- you might just want some company. I don't judge. If I don't show up? You get your money back OR a free flare next time we meet. That's basically the deal."

Jorn whispers in your ear. You nod, and turn to Shweps.

>"Let's say 1200 apiece or 3000 for 3. I'll take 3."

You shake hands and pay her.
>"I won't be violating terms of service should I have an ally who is in need of assistance and they used one of these instead?"

Shwep's eye widens
"Oh, no sir. You would absolutely be violating the terms of service in that situation. These are for your use. If I answer the signal and the person waiting there is someone besides folks I sold directly to? I skeedaddle. Could be a bushwhack for all I know. I mean say - and I don't mean to suggest a lack of character on your part, sir. It's merely an example. But say you gave one of those to someone who paid you for it. And that somebody was someone with a grudge on ol' Chaw? Well, you'd just be handing me to them. Apple in mouth."

She puts her thumbs in her belts.

"No sir, those flares are for your use. I pick and choose my clients."

She spits to the side.
"And I should mention - you may wanna consider the nature of any given ruckus you may or may not find yourself in. I believe my considerable arsenal can bring down whatever you point me at, but if you wanna sneak up on a body, well, that may be a different summon. My armour and my spurs make me about as stealthy as a buffalo in an icebox."

She moves her chew to the other side of her mouth.
"Lastly, and I don't mean to infer for a moment, you're not aware of this but I can't run through walls. Say for example, you decide you wanna take that sumptuous bounty up at Spellskaard.?"

She draw, twirls and holsters her pistols.
"You wanna blast your way through the front - well, you're nuttier than squirrel shit but I can be right there with you. No less nutty. But iffin' you sneak in disguised as a concierge , get deep into the building then rip a flare, I can't suddenly be there. I gots to be able to get where you are."

>"I have a feeling you've met Boddicker"

"Oh."

She chews particularly slowly.

"That crispy little crepe suzette? Red ants for blood? Looks like her britches would rip if she sneezed hard? Wishes she had a *huck p'too* of my do-si-do?"

She grins her widest grin yet.

"Yeah. I know her."

>">Do you take offence to crowds? How would you take being called to assist a full party."

"Why, quite the opposite, sir. One of the virtues of this system is that summons - any amount- go on top of existing party members. Say you pulled my flare and at the same time pulled another flare from another mercenary like myself. We would both be there. Even if we hated each others guts full tilt snake and mongoose we would both fight for you. A truce of sorts. Nothing interrupts the business. Or the 'hustle' if you'll pardon my goblin."

>"What is your policy regarding two opposing parties in conflict, both having flares?"

"That - I say -that is an important question and cut my legs off and call me shorty if you ain't the first one who's ever asked. It's a bit like this: if you summon me and someone else summons another member of the RHR - that's the mercenary flare group, son- then we fight for who summoned us, it's as simple as that. If though, when we get there, the only person to fight is each other, well then we need to have a pow-wow about that. Cause that sounds like someone doing eliminations. Trying to get the best mercenary via battle royale or just collect their tools of office. We'd have to have a sit down about that."

She spits
"Now, most unlikely but far from impossible, and I'm glad you mentioned it scenario is two conflicting parties both pulling my flare at the same time. In that event - well? Best make me an offer. Deeper pockets win every time. Sounds a little mercenary but I can't fault it seeing as how I myself am a big mercenary I don't really have a leg to stand on if you see my point."

>I'm thinking it'd be good to have an extra body when fighting Edgewater, but we should make sure it wouldn't cause problems if we use both her flare AND Boddicker's at the same time.

QM: Boddickers flare will not bring Boddicker to battle for you, so much as it summons the entire dispatch of Vanguards (or, like 90%) that doesn't help you with Edgewater directly but means that as you go through the forest to get him you will have to fight much MUCH less of his cronies, who will all be less well equipped before getting to the boss battle. The idea being his army of goons is too busy being roughed up by the Vanguards.

It is possible Boddicker will show up following Edgewaters (hopeful) defeat. If you have Shweps Everton there, it will merely result in some unique dialogue. No actual danger.

"Long time no see kid! I see you travelling with babes as usual. Including the babe you was looking for!! Some kinda cool cat on level with The Baron! Or not! But maybe someday, kid! You just keep at it."

He slams both hands on the counter, making his skeletons jump

"What can The Baron do for you today?!"

Jorn picks over your junk loot carefully assessing each piece and offers a price to the Baron.

The Baron nods and his mouth forms into a wide, crooked grin.

"I can't a wouldn't put one over on you, squeezebabe. You got a deal!"

>"A rowboat, and do you have explosives?"

The Baron drums his fingers on his face, thinking.

"I gots two boats in stock I can think of! You can have one that is maybe good for two or three people. Comes with some nice oars. Sturdy enough! 350 gold. Or for 1100 gold you can have one with 4 oars, a deployable sale and enough room for 4-5 plus some loot. If you gots a custom boat in mind, you talk to my boy Dowler."

He cracks his knuckles.
"And I got dynamite for days, kid! 20 gold a stick! You bought a lot of dynamite last time too, eh? You giving someone a world of pain or you just digging for gold the easy way? Don't matter! Don't answer! Yours if you gots the gold!"

The Baron's eyes go to half lid as he stretches his philtrum into a truly dispassionate frown.

"Hot gossip, kid."

He perks back up

"Well then, The Baron can lay this on you : Shweps Everton is a buckaroo who will herd or break animals or do dirty jobs for gold."

You take a break from that particular discussion and call Mike via the mutterbottle.

>"How much dynamite do you need to properly sap a semi-permanent coastal camp with upwards of 100 personnel?"

The Baron's eyes open all the way back up and he cackles manically.
"You're alright, kid."

Mike does a small exhalation
"We don't wanna take any chances, right? Let's grab 100 sticks. I know it's a lot but it'll turn them inside out if we do it right. And we will."

Jorn puts some bills on the counter
"Yo Baron, set me up with a bed, baby!"

The Baron clicks his fingers and sends a dirtbag to the back room

The baron claps
"You can just have them! On account of buying so much dynamite! You're up to something, kid! And the Baron LIKES it!"

You check your wallet:
6450 gold

The Baron gets one enormous eye at the sight of it.

"WHOA! You oughtta put some of that in you SAFE, kid. Or is that your pocket change these days, you mad high roller?"

>"Miss Everton is in town to pick up a herd and gave us a pitch regarding her services. You can't deny you would not be curious to know more."

"You got that right!"

The Baron traces an hourglass figure in the air same as he did for Jorn, he doesn't move his hands for the top half much for this one though.

"Of course The Baron already KNOW more than he said BUT why should he tell you about another customer when all you want said about you is:"

The Baron stands up straight and affects a bored expression

">'I run a potion company'"

You can see Richter supress a laugh.

The Baron slaps the counter and gives you an almost affectionate smile

"Sorry kid. Can't just gossip about a customer like that. You want the hot goss, you hire a dick or maybe talks to Zhenji. Shweps and her are close."

"She hated it. She made her displeasure known many times before she finally attacked. People dismissed her first attack as a bad weather and continued to use the lighthouse. Her next attack is the reason the temple, mine and shack town on that island are all but abandoned except by spiders and imbeciles."

He exhales.
"That lighthouse has not been lit in 150 years or more as a consequence. Time has distorted the facts and now people will tell you it is merely 'bad luck' to use the light house. Very few know the truth. Fewer still accept it."

Wordlessly, Dowler reaches into a nearby crate. Each sphere in it has webbed padding around it like overprotected fruit. He removes the padding from one and holds it aloft.

It is a glass sphere, utterly enclosed but with a swirling angry, mass of orange and pink liquid within it like a boomflask.

Jorn looks worried
"It doesn't break when it's fired?"

Dowler shakes his head.
"Wouldn't sell them unless they worked. The firing of them weakens the first layer of glass, the second layer breaks on impact with its target. Fire usually ensues."

Jorn nods, thoughtfully.

"In regards to my honorifics - for many decades I would be punished for forgetting them even once. Now, I merely think it is good business practice. A lot of people still find blue children confronting, even frightening. A formal manner can help with this."

>"Is there any other advice you would be willing to offer regarding these waters, Master Dowler? While I trust everyone in my crew, I'm willing to admit my own lack of experience."

Dowler blinks. Perhaps his version of being caught off guard by flattery.

"A loyal crew is one with food, space and activity. Divide your earnings well, either by giving people a good cut or by providing things that benefit many. Use your head. And your eyes. Stay on the water when you can if you make enemies. If you ever travel with a blue child, a blooch, when you're in the south of the Garlands make sure you have a second autobard that's topside playing smooth jazz. That, or be sure to throw large quantities of shrimp or mangoes overboard if you hear 'her'. No matter how strong you get, how rich how powerful. Do not imagine even for a second you can fight nature or it's duly appointed representatives."

Richter tilts her head. Dowler notices.

"Besides like that."

You receipt is as follows

Burnsauce x2
Gingerly beer x3
Madax Coffee x3
Boomflask x10
Small Health Potion x 4
Large Health Potion x 8
Mana Potion x 8
Cherry Grink x 4

For a total of 2195 gold

This leaves you with 3205 gold remaining, which is good.

Your [BACKPACK] is getting quite full.

You give the 4 pack of Cherry Grink to Jorn, who is ecstatic. She takes the 4 pack with both hands and holds it aloft.

"OO-o-o-o-oh! I am gonna put these to use. This means when I do a KALE STORM™, each punch will do 13 damage, instead of 3. With the best possible result, that means over 1500 damage before I even lose my temper."

Richter's eyes go uncharacteristically wide
"Such power..."

Jorn beams.
"Not power but speed. Check it."

Jorn holds an empty glass in the flat of her left hand. She pulls it away then puts her right hand underneath it. She pulls her right away and puts her left back underneath it. The glass barely moves.

Jorn, to Siarks's relief, puts the glass back on the counter.

Richter finishes her drink
"I wonder.. could I achieve it? In this form I mean?"

Jorn shrugs and smiles
"That I don't know. A lot of my body...I'm still figuring out. But I think it could be fun and rewarding to try. You got spells, girly. But maybe I can teach you some moves."

Richter clenches her fists and exhales, elated.
"My journey is FAR from over.."

>"No reason to be sorry, not everything I come up with has to be doable. If I keep coming up with them, some of them are bound to work."

Jorn clenches her fists and leans towards you.
"Oh MAN! I totally feel the same way! I feel like we sort of get each other, no?"

>>5578348
You think on the marking's you've seen on other ripflares. The one you have has the Vanguards logo on, which is to say, the stamp of Delag, embossed with gold foil. Karls looked nicely made but was unmarked. It looked smaller. Made for goblin hands. The moose scouts were a lighter cardboard and had the stamp of The Govian on. Figures those jerks would co-op the symbol of a perfectly good deity. Well, fuck them. They don't own it.

>"No worries Jorn. I like my revolver, but a diversity of tools and methods means more versatility. I wouldn't want everyone learning all the same spells, y'know?"

Jorn nods.
"I think a few of us have *some* spells in common, but I think we're mixing it up okay."

You proceed to the GOPNIK CAMP

As last time, it's pretty turned out. There are still scraps of pumpkin everywhere but all the bodies are gone. Probably work for The Baron Now.

There is a green Rinkan in the clearing. It lacks the handle harness of other Rinkan and had only a small bag on it. It is walking around in circles and hopping up and down.

It tucks it's legs up to hover, then stops.

It does this few times.

It looks up and down and all around.
>>
>>5579089
Ask Jorn to conjure a pumpkin we could use to feed it. Maybe we can replicate what Mike did back at Jarka with Milosh's Rinkan and calm it down to closely examine it.
Just don't do any sudden moves.
>>
>>5579089
We could call Mike again for advice. The Rinkan appears jittery and confused.

You ask Jorn to conjure a pumpkin you could use to feed it.

Jorn waves her hands mystically and a large pumpkin appears in the air before collapsing into the soft grass.

The rinkan stops moving and looks at the three of you. It's head nods a few times before it takes a few bites of pumpkin.

Jorn nods thoughtfully.

The rinkan chips, what you think is happily before tilting its body, making it easier to climb aboard.
>>

There we go. Let's examine the bag.

You look in the bag. Eight mana potions and a hipflask.

"Ah. That's a give away."

You look around. That voice sounded right over your shoulder.

Richter and Jorn. Are just standing there. Richter checks her wrist wraps.

"It's me, jefe. Took a bit to figure out in this form. Most of my spells I can't really manifest, but this one still works."

Seriously sounds like Burstock is talking into your ear.

The rinkan is looking at you.

"Don't panic okay? I'm sure you have questions. The good news is, while I'm doing this, you can just think them."

The rinkan finishes eating the pumpkin

Jorn claps
"He loves it!"

The rinkan finishes chewing.
"Truthfully most things taste okay in this form. I ate a pinecone earlier and it was fine. Before you ask: I'm testing the potions to see if they're safe - for emergencies. Also, I guess to learn more about what it's like being transmogged."

Try not to panic.
Ask Burstock if she is okay with others knowing. They don't seem to be able to hear her.
Isn't it kind of risky to test these potions on herself? Then again it would be risky for anyone so a moot point I suppose.
Is she currently naked?

Aw man, I was starting to get excited about potentially finding an unclaimed Rinkan. Finally putting those riding leathers to use and all.
Won't it suck to have a pinecone in your stomach once you turn back?

>Ask Burstock if she is okay with others knowing.

Burink looks at the other two then back at you.
"It's not really relevant at this stage. And if they have questions, well, I can only 'mind talk' to one person at a time. I only just got the spell and it's not working amazing in this form."

>Isn't it kind of risky to test these potions on yourself? Then again it would be risky for anyone so a moot point I suppose.

"Exactly. Any damage done post transformation, I can heal. If it wet wrong and I 'nowl'd' myself, I'd be able to undo it. I'm the perfect person to test this sort of thing, truthfully."

>Aw man, I was starting to get excited about potentially finding an unclaimed Rinkan. Finally putting those riding leathers to use and all.

"Hey, I *offered* you a ride. I need to test my carrying capacity, although, honestly I feel pretty strong. And well, there's spare potions. I'm just testing one of them. So, you can have a rinkan in an emergency without having to have one on board to have to look after."

>Won't it suck to have a pinecone in your stomach once you turn back?

"I'm hoping it won't work like that? If it does, I can handle it regardless. Another reason I'm the one doing this."

>Is she currently naked?
"Yes, Joe. I'm currently naked. "

She looks around
"Here's a thing I never knew. I dunno if the potion's been tweeked but I have a countdown. After 10 minutes I got 5 tolls in my head. Like shrine bells. Then 4 then 3. It counts down from an hour. So when I hear one toll, I have 10 minutes before I change back, I think. I often wondered how they timed it."

"There's a ridged plate right behind my head, you can get you fingers an inch or so underneath it. Won't hurt me at all. Your riding leathers will help you grip. And don't worry, we're gonna start slow."

You turn to the others.

>"You guys fine if i take this beaut for a ride? I've been wearing riding leathers all this time, with nothing to ride."

Jorn shrugs.
" Go for it, man. I was gonna do it if you didn't."

"tch"

>"Feel free to do anything, sorry for dipping out early."

Richter smiles benignly.
"We will amuse ourselves."

You climb onto Burstock.

"Ha. Yeah you weigh nothing. Let's see what I can do."

She takes a few steps then unfolds her wings and begins rapidly beating them. She tucks up her legs. You are officially hovering.

Jorn and Richter watch, impressed and give you a small wave.

"Hold on to your bobby socks."

You take off across the fields that were once the gopnik camps, the loose grass and dust peels away in waves either side of you.

You can feel the wind in your hair and somehow the low buzz of her wings isn't irritating its just fades into the other noise you hear. You've never gone so fast in your life and you can tell this is just the beginning.

She does a banking turn at the edge of a field and comes flying back past Richter and Jorn who you can just barely hear whoop as you pass.

"Ha haaa! This rules! I'm barely going half speed! Where to, boss?"

You feel utterly safe.

'Where in *town*. I know I'm fast like this but I still change back in less than 20 minutes."

Burstock does another bank turn and speeds toward the beach.

"Nevermind. There's something I need to test. Hold on!"

Burstock starts to go even faster and is heading straight for the water.

She begins to sing to herself. Perhaps out of exhilaration or maybe to focus. Perhaps to set you both at ease.

>ooh, can you fly fast enough to part the water?

"Doubt it. But there's something I can try. Most rinkan wouldn't think to do this and it would be hard to teach them. But I am not most Rinkan!"

As you crash through the surf, Burstock lowers all six legs and kicks them down while maintaining her hover wings. After an initial dip you find yourself essentially riding on the water. There is a slight bobbing as Burstock periodically kicks off the water but your rding bonus helps with any motion sickness you may or may not have in this instance.

The ocean spray kicks up around you. Minutes pass as you almost lose sight of the land.

"Yep nope. Barely even feeling this. Rinkan are born for this. Moulded for this. Child play."

Burstock suddenly looks around.

"That was my last toll, though! OOps. Better fang it back to the ship."

Burstock drifts on the water as you turn around and head back to land.

"Ha ha haaa! This is gonna be a little close! I'm going for the ship!"

The Silver Lining comes into view, you can see Dowler on the dock. His body language at the sight of you is the most surprised you've seen him. He rubs his eyes.

Burstock is heading directly for the back of the ship.

"LOOKS LIKE WE'RE GONNA HAVE TO JUMP!!"

She tucks her legs up and does one final push against the water, sending you rocketing skyward. You are over and above the deck of the ship.

Karl gapes up at you almost losing his cigarette.

The Rinkans body rolls and cracks like a whip and makes a hideous wet snapping sound as it transforms almost instantly back into the Volly Burstock you're more familar with.

Her back is arched and her mouth is agape. She is beaded with sweat and traces of steam come off her body.

Overall she seemed to have handled the transformation much better than others you've seen.

She opens her eyes and clambers to her feet.

Karl skitters back and turns around. He puts two more cigarettes in his mouth and lights them both.

"fuck me!"

Burstock pushes her shoulders back. She takes a mana potion and a pair of underwear from her satchel and avails herself of both.

"You know, that wasn't as bad as I assumed. That said, I imagine it's easier if you're a vitamgus, hey?"

She takes a pull from her hipflask and offers it to you.

"These are probably good pots, though. Since they're probably made by Hilbosh."

"It's fine! It's cool. DOn't worry about it."

>""For a first flight, with a passenger no less, that was pretty amazing."

Burstock smiles
"Think so? Thanks. Took me a bit to get the basics of it. Wonder if knowing more about the animal you turn into helps. It turned out okay though."

Burstock makes some snorting and choking noises and spits out an opal.

"And there's some interesting info. Whatever organic manner consumed while transformed seems to either rapidly digest or rapidly cook off with the energy of transformation. I don't have so much as a sore tummy from eating a whole pumpkin plus a pine cone. But the opal I swallowed earlier to test this is still with me. ..That is really out there."

>"How'd you get your hands on these potions."
"I didn't. Mike had them. He didn't say where from but reasoned they could be used in an emergency. He figured if the boat got totalled during the mission, he could transform and get the goblins back to the ship, assuming of course a rinkan can move on water."

She shrugs
"Now, I don't think most rinkan could. But a ternion transformed into a rinkan definitely can. Its a weird motion, but possible. So, in a worse case scenario his plan would totally work."

She places her hands on her hips and shakes her head, smiling down
"Mike's a careful guy though, so he wanted to test the potion first, I reasoned I could do it for him."

She spreads her hands
"Voila"

>"Do they have any markings?"

"Typed labels. They're all rinkan potions."

You take a sip from the flask. Neat gin.

You gesture to the flask and point to Karl

"Sure, he can have some if he wants."

Burstock pauses while putting on her scarf and thinks.

"Chaw? Shweps Everton, right? Your height or taller? Mousey hair? Smile like a gelada baboon?"

She puts her earrings in.
"I spent gar knows how long just living in Mordens challenging people to dice, healing minor wounds and fishing. trying to maintain a heavy buzz throughout."

Burstock finally slides her wizards robe back on.
"I saw them come and go a lot. They were friendly enough, I guess. Bit crass for all the 'suh' and 'ma'am' hoakum they laid on. Worked a lot of different job or seemed to."

She adjust the top half
"Never short on gold, and generous with it. Morden's doesn't even have a tip system, but I have vivid memories of them paying more than they had to. A few times when shit was real quiet we'd actually sit at the same table and just talk about shit and get loaded on apple liquor or whatever. Trade stories, you know."

Burstock looks up. There is a distant peel of thunder.

"Not much to say, I guess. They're...fine? I gather you ask cause you ran into them. Sorry I don't have more for you."

Burstcock taps her boots into place properly.

>"How do I get Highball a city-pass like you have?"

Karl shrugs.
"You probably don't. I was given this one by a police captain so that I could act as auxiliary to their plain clothes department. Found out by pure chance and a mix up that I was only brought into the fold so that I could be used as a fall guy for their own corrupt dealings."

Karl sighs out a angry cloud of smoke.

"He disappeared soon after. I managed to avoid taking the fall like he planned. I had evidence - some evidence - that maybe could have brought his misdeeds and some other corruption in the department to light. But then, it'd bring my pass into question also. So I decided to pick my battles I guess."

He takes another draw.
"I may do my best to be a good goblin, but even I only have this thing cause someone wanted a lightning rod. They're not big on giving them out."

>"I noticed you had a ripflare, earlier. Can I see it?"

Karl sizes you up.
"Sure."

He rolls out a cloth scrolls filled with six or seven flares. He hands you one.

It's very well made. Smaller, especially the cord. It has a strange writing on it that you assume to be goblin.

>"Is it me, or are you smoking a lot even for you?"

Karl looks to the side.

Karl bobs his eyebrows and breathes through his nose.

"Just that the murdering bastard I know personally rejected an offer of employment from them. Too unscrupulous and nihilistic for them. It's not a company for people who still believe in anything except money."

Karl widens his eyes and does a small laugh.

"And - for context- said murdering bastard is ALSO a goblin. This goes beyond the hussle."

Karl shrugs
"I'm not talking about a paid soldier in an army, or the people you hire. I'm not talking about people who kill for their den or business. I'm not even talking about that one fruitcake in Ubaskkea that seems to be killing cops and lobbyists. They all believe in something."

Karl looks over the ocean again.
"It's the unofficial mercenary motto. 'You can't put a hammer among nails an expect them to be friends.' And yeah, it's good to believe in something. Or to try to."

>"Alright, I don't wanna make you hard up. But if you need a hand with something, I try to take care of my people."

Karl turns to you and stares for 15 seconds.
"I swear to Gar, it is IMPOSSIBLE to tell when you're fucking with me. I appreciate you're concern, but I'll be alright. Thanks, anyways."

You walk down the ramp of the ship and bid farewell to Karl. He waves without turning around. As you look down the beach, you see that Citizen is no longer there.

As you walk towards Morden's you come across Jorn and Richter coming the other way. Jorn is leaning on Richter and they are both drinking large healing potions. They have huge smiles on their faces.

"The way you move. The way you bend. I still cannot completely understand it, let alone emulate it."

"You clearly don't have to, toots. You still planted me."

"I still can't help but be fascinated."

"Well, we can both learn a l..whoop. Hold up."

Jorn notices you and does a small salute. Jorn copies her.

"What's the go, boss?"

Jorn laughs
"I got imbedded in the ground."

Richter leans forward, beaming
"It was glorious combat. Any one of her strikes could have been the undoing of a lesser combatant. She commands absolute vigilance."

Jorn waves her hand
"Ah, you're too kind."

>"Going to Morden's. Care to join me?"

They both nod. Jorn steadies herself and pats Richter on the back.

"Come on, champ, I'll buy you an orange smoothie."

You enter Morden's and are greeted by Zhenji in her usual enervated tone.
Gommersal raises his glass.

Grab a drink from Morden and join Gomersal. Didn't he want to hear stories how we came to use his provisions? Well now an Elder Dwarf no longer prowls this world, laid low by smoke and thunder from a barrel of our gun.

It's only been a short while, but does he have any new merchandise?
Also show him the sapphire with the spinning gold.

You go up to the bar to order and Gommersal calls out
"Do not trouble yourself, my friends! Zhenji, if you please.."

Zhenji clacks her hooves together and does a small bow. She comes back with the fancy red wine you gave Gommersal earlier and 4 glasses.

Jorn gestures that she only wishes for a small amount. The rest of you get full glasses.

Gommersal rubs his hand together, you can Zhenji is listening in.

"It's true isn't it? The Elder Dwarf?"

You nod

Gommersal and Zhenji high 10 eachother and Zhenji gets a toothy smile.

"What did I tell you? Didn't I tell you?"

"I never doubted it! Well done!"

Gommersal toasts you all and you regale him with your dangerous and exciting kaprosuchus laden adventure through Kerdil forest and your thunderous defeat of the Elder Dwarf. He nods, laughs and gestures appropriately during your above average re-telling of events. You clear up that it was Mike and Burstock you were travelling with and he assures you he will congratulate them when next they meet also.

He swivels in his chair to address Zhenji as she busses some glasses.

"How wonderful, Zhenji! Your family is safe."

Zhenji does a small disingenuous laugh
"And your pen pal."

>It's only been a short while, but does he have any new merchandise?

Gommersal swishes the win in his mouth and swallows.
"Do you know? I had actually restocked a little bit but one of my regulars was just in and cleaned me right out. You should go to Scadam, perhaps. I have it that they're back open as a town and have a decent ammunition store."

Jorn takes a tiny sip of wine. She has a rueful look.
"Stukka, right?"

Gommersal nods.
"Yes, that was it. Her. The store. The store's owner."

You show him the sapphire with the spinning gold.

"Hello! What's this? AH. I've heard of this, I think? It operates on something we've known for some time. That pure mana energy can, however briefly, be stored in gold. Unique among metals or indeed anything non living."

He hold it up to his eye. He's easily the person most impressed with it so far.

"Did they finally find a way to store it? Keep the mana from escaping? We were always talking about it but.."

"Dealanclach"

Gommersal turns to Zhenji

"It's what they call those rocks. I was only in the academy for 15 months but it was all they talked about. It electricity. Mana made electricity. It's blasted into gold and sealed within orkish blueglass. With the right receptacle to slowly release its power a single Dealanclach, or just 'clach' can power an ice box for 2 years, it has no by-product, no harmful fumes and is remarkably stable."

She points to the gem
"If you were to break that, the mana stored within would silently and harmlessly dissipate. Once it is empty, it can be taken and recharged."

Gommersal thinks
"Any drawbacks?"

"Recharging a clach starts at 10'000 gold."
>>
>>5584061
"That's incredible. Better energy density than mogspit, but with a voltaic pile's self-contained nature.
Maybe they'll get cheaper once industry gets their claws in. Hopefully there's enough demand to justify investment in manufacturing these things, it'd be a shame for it to stay just a lab-made curio."

"Zhenji, you want some of this wine?"
>>
>>5584061
Hmm. So if charging one starts at that, then the price of a fully charged one would be very interesting indeed.
>>
>>5584116
>"That's incredible. Better energy density than mogspit, but with a voltaic pile's self-contained nature."

Zenji nods and smiles, pleased that you understand.
"That's about the size of it. It's meaning big things for self contained devices, weapons and even transportation, potentially."

Jorn swallows the mouthful of crisps she has
"That's right! Weaponry! I remembered thanks to Richter. The thing I heard the hum from. It was a blyskawica! But a much newer one."

Zenji nods
"Yeah, the Blyskawica 217. It's a big step up from the 112. Quieter lighter and safer but no less powerful. Veeeeery expensive."

Gomersal pauses mid sip
"217...so it only came out 2 years ago?"

Zenji shrugs
"Emergent technology, Gom. Gotta keep your finger on it or you lose track."

Gomersal gets a serious look.
"Yes."

His tone has a weight to it that it has lacked earlier. He picks up single potato crisp and stares at it
"Yes, I think that's true."
He consumes it and chews thoughtfully.

Zenji playfully knocks shoulders with Gomersal
"Something rekindling?"

Gomersal stares straight forwards. His tone lacks her playfulness.
"I don't know. I don't know. It's possible."

>"Zhenji, you want some of this wine?"
She shakes her head.
"Wasted on me. I like mead."

>"Maybe they'll get cheaper once industry gets their claws in."
"Doubt it. The secrets to making it are held by the factotums. They have no motivation to make it cheaper."

>"So if charging one starts at that, then the price of a fully charged one would be very interesting indeed."

Zenji nods.
"An easy 10000 to anyone in the know. The charging takes time, you see. So once you drain one, you don't get the same one back. The factotums take your empty one and then you buy a charged one for 10'000 at least. Depends on the branch I guess."

She points nebulously to the south
"Don't bother with the academy on the water. They'll most likely charge you more for invading their space and bothering them while they work. Most major cities have at least a small factotum outpost. They'll probably sort you out. It's not like every factotum you meet will be like Gomersal and...definitely not like me but the ones at the academy, surrounded by other factotums all day. They're probably just a little bit less friendly."

Gomersal finally smiles again
"A stereotype. Even in my heyday I was relaxed. Many factotums are, you know."

Zenji puts down a fresh bowl of crisps.and smiles.
"Just going on my own time there."

Gomeral smiles and raises his glass.
"The factotums are an institution with progress and learning in mind. Mere money does not motivate them so much as discovery an innovation. With that said, they DO need to cover their costs."

"Can't just put dragon grade technology in the hands of the hoi polloi either, can we?"

Gomersal gives her a slight stare

Gomersal and Zenji glance at each other and shrug.

"We...don't know the process but I'm certain it doesn't use thralls. I would imagine it requires well trained factotums, possibly ones that specialise in matter states as well as several wizards using some sort of energy transfer spell."

Jorn glances at the menu.
"Most likely 'smite' or 'siphon', I bet."

Zenji shrugs and adjusts her top, having done a lot of shrugging today
"Sure. I don't really know magic."

"Sorry, could I get two orange juices but with a scoop of ice cream in?"

Zenji drops off Jorn and Richter's drinks, which they stir.
"Both clachs you have would have originally come from a major city. Most likely Rojkawg,as Joonda isn't really big enough to have much factotum presence. After that point, there's nothing to really suggest the drained one the dwarf had and the charged on Edgewater had ever belonged to the same person. The drained one could have just been dropped after its use by someone thoughtless or in a rush and well, Edgewater probably just picked up on his travels between the ice cap and here. >"What do you know about Shweps Everton?"

Gomersal thinks
"I know her weapons are well made. Not a Nash original like yours but they were still made by me and that's good. She never seems to be short on money. She spends ah..time with Zenji whenever she's able to. She rides a red rinkan which suggests she was practically born in the saddle. Her accent indicates she is from Hornady, one of the first recorded Major human settlements, so that makes sense"

> "You seem like you're thinking about getting back in the game."

He steeples his fingers and leans back in his chair
"I am thinking about thinking about it. At least partially. Technology could be taking one of it's first big leaps in a long time."

>"Do I have this right? You have a penpal in Jarka forest?"
His expression softens again and he tops up your wine.
"Ah! Just so! Zenji sends letter back to the Nowl community she came from that lives in Jarka. She thought it would do me good to have someone to write letters to as well. There's a scrapyard in the center of the forest, so I write letters to the owner. We talk about our daily lives, our observations on technology from two different perspectives. Recently, they had been writing about the elder dwarfs attacks on Jarka forest as well as Kerdil, but hanks to you, that's been taken care of."

>"Tell me about the Factotum College on the island."
"I can tell you it's not on an island, it's literally a stilted structure built on the water. I didn't study at that one myself - it's a bit newer. Besides that, I imagine it's like all Factotum Colleges. The studies and tech provided are expensive, but unlike any other and give you access to knowledge and devices unknown to anyone else. It sets you up for a lifetime of employment. Which is good, as staying abreast of technology and maintaining the tech you have is expensive. The Kies point college has a reputation for reclaiming tech and picking through battlefield. But I don't know if it's fair."

>"So I don't mean to put you on the spot, but I thought the whole factotum/wizard rivalry was partially due to the idea that power should be available to everyone. What with tech and industry not caring whether you're a grel or an ork or anything else so long as you've got hands. Doesn't keeping the best stuff in the colleges kind of go against that?"
Gomersal holds up his hands
"In my experience, the rivalry between mages and factotums is over who is more integral to the flow and progress of modern society. Pointless bickering as they're both right. The factotum belief, however, that the secrets of the more powerful technology needs to be monitored and controlled is not entirely without merit. This world has been through one era of unchecked, un monitored science devoid of quality control and ethics. Best not to push our luck."

I would be unable to pay you much for them, but you will be compensated. I would like, I think, to take them apart. Reassemble them. Perhaps even improve them or build something new if I still can. At first, I thought I wanted to be a bard, but I discovered I don't want that much attention on me at once, I went to the factotum college which was cool for a bit, but really expensive and stressful. After that, I felt like doing the exact opposite of anything to do with technology and polite society, so I nowl'd myself and went to live in Jarka. Which was really chill and I was able to use my factotum skills for a while but I started to miss some of the conveniences of towns and I kinda wanted to meet more people and possibly make money from sex work, which honestly had been one of the constants in my life I always enjoyed sooo. here I am now, I guess. Morden clears his throat. Zenji buses the tables then returns to you once more.

"Trying to get a party going is like yelling at someone to calm down. It *MIGHT* work but it flies in the face of the whole spirit of things. Take it from me that trying to focus on more than two people at a time get's messy."

Richter whispers something to Jorn. Jorn cups a hand over her mouth and whispers back. Richter stares into her empty glass and blushes.

"The only real method to it is to see what sticks. When you pair up people for combat - like with these two - they will talk more and see what they have in common. If it works, then they will gravitate towards each other in their down time."

Zenji collects your glasses and leaves a cheque for Jorn, which Jorn pays.

"If two people are never grouped up in a combat team, and don't seem to be hanging out together outside of combat, then the best thing to do is try and make an activity they will both enjoy available. By all accounts, you've already made steps in that direction."

She takes the glasses back to the counter and collect's Jone's glasses as well,
"You don't want to meddle too too much. But you can give people a small push towards each other. Don't be blunt about it. Don't just say "you should hang out with this guy more" or "I want you to work on on your friendship with this person". Be social about it. Be more like "Oh, you like fishing? So and so, also likes fishing, I bet you could trade stories.". Try to just give gentle pushes and mediate. Try to feel the vibes of the room and just have a good time."

Zenji effortlessly helps Jones out of his chair, adjusts his hat and pats him on the back. He nods ands smiles and walks out. She collects his money from the table.

>"So there's this being. Some sort of ancient, giant Rusalka called the Rampart..."

You explain to the group her suspected territory, what little is known of her history, her love of smooth jazz, her hatred of trolls and her apparent hatred of lighthouses in this area. You doubt very much she can be reasoned with, certainly not recruited but the more people know, the better. Everyone is brought up to speed, at least with as much knowledge you have yourself.

Karl shrugs
"Can't see her playing a big role in all of this. But this is good to know in case we ever hire a blooch."

Richter turns to him
"Does that seem likely?"

Karl crunches a lollipop and does a small laugh
"No ruling out anything in this joint."

Jorn rolls billiard balls in her hands like baoding balls
"I don't think she really has a sense of right or wrong, she just does what she does, right? It just works for most of us. I mean Kies Point is almost as south as it gets before you hit the frozen taint of this planet."

Mike winces at her wording

"For every troll boat that gets to here or the mainland I bet The Rampart is probably rinsing another three or four, no? Edgewater seemed to think that any troll who got to even the Elven islands was a victory for trolls. That could be why"
She puts the balls down.

>"I've finally learned more about this these crystals. You see..."

You tell them what you know. The crystals have emerged over the last 5 years. The process to make them is guarded, but they can be bought in most major cities. They power appliances, weapons and are stable and clean. There's even talk of them powering vehicles some day.

Highball stretches
"Hoo brudda. It'd be nice if they could make some of those powered big cities vehicles quieter, but I ain't holding my breath."

Karl nods and cleans his ears
"For anything over a certain weight, I think we're still looking at mog spit"

Jorn thinks.
"So a flying vehicle could be powered by one?"

Mike nods
"Right, like a powered hang glider or one of the smaller airships like an Empyrean Sloop or a Sky Galley. I'm not sure it's gonna be shifting a Cloud Frigate like this any time soon."

Richter tilts her head
"I thought this ship was called a Cloud Ferry."

Mike smiles
"That is common use an nobody really cares these days. Blame my pedantry on my brief stint in the service."

Jorn yawns and stretches, Karl glances at her

"Was there...anything else Mr. Donuts?"

>"Please, Mr. Donuts is my father. Call me Joey."

Karl moves the stick to the other side of his mouth.
"I'll see what I can do, Joe."

>"Here's everything I learned today about factotums..."
You talk about what you learned. their training, their presence their role in the GTU and even out in the Mahala. You talk about the knowledge they keep and their justification for doing so.

Highball thinks
"So is Gary a factotum?"

Burstock adds grenadine to her drink
"No, but he was likely trained by one in his old job. He can take apart, clean and maybe replace parts on a few set devices. There's a few people like that, too."

Karl perks up
"Wait, so is Dowler a factotum?"

Jorn stops shoot dancing
"Nah, he's a shipwright. He probably went to a Hustleberry's - same as Doctor Ash. Won't get you a piece of paper but it gives you a bunch of good training. I bet he could fix just about anything that went wrong with a ship -sea or sky. But that tech hasn't changed much in a good century and a bit. When it comes to older tech, there's quite a lot of folks out there that know a thing or five."

Richter seeks clarification
"But Gomersal IS a factotum?"

Jorn nods
"Fully papered. But he's been out of the game for a decade at least."

"And Zenji..?"

Burstock finished mixing her Sex on The Beach
"Has only done one year of her factotum training. No qualifications or tools, but with much fresher knowledge."

Everyone seems to nod at once. That's cleared up.

>"After we go to Scadam, I was thinking about going to The Craggs. Thoughts?"

Karl raises his hand then lowers it.
"Nevermind, doesn't really involve me, huh?"

Mike turns to you
"You planning on doing some grinding there,Joonda? Because, well it could be good for that. And you're gonna want mages with you, so it wont effect Nep, Nagakura and myself from training."

Highball smiles, if a little nervous
"Yeah blades and arrows aren't gonna do too much against draugr. On the skeletons maybe but..yeah. If you're looking to grind xp, you could do worse. Just be careful, Joey."

Burstock gives Highball a small pat, she chirps happily.
"Don't sweat it. No matter this loadout he'll be back in one piece. No wrong answers."

Richter and Jorn nod in agreement.

You smile, placatingly.

>"You just know that place is full of loot by now."

Mike nods, thoughtfully chewing on his thumbnail
"There's no doubt about that. It's not just the stuff from the war either. People have been coming to the crags for decades to train or to scavenge. So there's also all the loot from all the ones that tried and failed."

Karl glances skyward, thoughtfully.
"If adventurers keep getting their ticket punched there, doesn't that mean there's also more and more zombies and draugr?"

Mike nods, sips his drink and bobs his brow
"Myup. There's a reason it's still infested."

Jorn leans on the pool table
"It gets a little cleared out by thanomagus now and then, 'cause they can permanently banish draugr, but that still only does so much. Ship's still get wrecked there too."

Highball takes a sip of Bustocks drink and gestures with it.
"We'll have to bring the Silver into the crags from the water side. The line where the crags meet the rest of the land is a sheer rock wall. Taller than our rope ladder is long."

Mike folds his arms and nods
" It'll be better for a quick extraction, should the unquiet dead prove too much."

Jorn unwraps and takes a bite from a chocolate.
"Yeah, that's pretty much S.O.P, I think. "

Highball taps her lip
"Sooo...all the best loot might be the stuff furthest from the water?"

Mike shrugs
"I dunno about best, but...probably the oldest?"

Highball does a small chuckle.

Karl puts his hands in his pockets and lowers his head
"Leeeeet's gauge how dangerous this place is before we set about plundering its depths."

>"Leeeeet's gauge how dangerous this place is before we set about plundering its depths."
Agreed, let's not risk anyone by being reckless. It's my first time going there anyway, I'd rather get a feel for the place before I get us into danger I can't handle, yeah?

Probably sucks where they're from bad enough that even the Elven islands seem comfortable and warm by comparison.

Burstock shrugs
"Temperature doesnt seem to trouble them, and - whatever their land is like it's rich in resources. They just want more of it."

>"Next stop, Scadam, I'm buying the blasting powder there."

Mike smiles.
"Excellent. Apparently there's a dispensary there now, too. I'm sure we can take a small break from training and trap building, right guys?"

Karl nods.

>"Don't mean to wreck your good mood Jorn, but you're coming with, yeah?"

Jorn crumples up her foil and starts rolling it into a sphere.
"Oh, totally sure. I left Big Jim there with a roll of cash and some of the folks you rescued. I'd love to see what they've done with the place."

Jorn checks the sphere and keeps rolling it
"Can't imagine everyone's gonna be thrilled to see me, but all the better for me to go there, right? Face the music maybe try to make things up to people? Let em paste me if they want to."

Richter steps forward.
"Not that last part."

Jorn shrugs a little.

"Hey, no worries. If they really hold a grudge and don't want to see you, there's plenty of other places and times you can do good."

Hey Chief, out-of-universe curiosity, but what's the legal jurisdiction on crimes and such committed in the mahalands? If Joey and Co went back to civilized lands, would their actions out in the mahalands be prosecutable (assuming there was evidence for a case), or is there a sort of territorial statute-of-limitations?

>"Hey, no worries. If they really hold a grudge and don't want to see you, there's plenty of other places and times you can do good."

Jorn thinks while doing skandasana.
"It'll be mixed, probably. A lot of the people who got the worst of Edgewater and me taking over the town were a bunch of Happy Andy's friends and hangers on who moved in after people who preferred Brandt left the town. After you guys liberated it and Andy ran away, I think a bunch of them, did to? I know Stukka stuck around but I think the town has a lot of new folks there too. Maybe even some people who were there back when Brandt ran it, I don't know."

She flips her pose
"Put simply, the town might be like 25% people who are pissed at me, 55% people who moved in after the siege and like 20% folks that have been there since before Andy and will have a wildcard opinion of me. Should be fine, if you can believe that."

She bends to look at Richter
"Wait, did my maths check out?"

Richter nods.

QM: The GTU is chiefly concerned with threats to the GTU and those in any way connected to it. Secondarily, it wants to make sure no one is starting trouble with nature, a force with which the GTU has a truce.

This is what the Vanguards chiefly exist to enforce and report on. If some starts over logging a forest or maliciously starting fires, the Vanguards need to stop them before they piss off the dryads or spook beasts out of the forest and toward the cities.

If someone is interfering with the business of, or in someway threatening The Factotums, people on commission from a GTU city (Zakub farmstead for example), or Soldiers at the various Bastions then the Vanguards are to observe, report and if necessary assist.

Crimes committed against individual recognized by the GTU (Joey and Jorn, for example) can either be addressed by the Vanguards or those that care can send justice to be meted out by soldier or otherwise trained people connected with the GTU OR can even make use of the Bounty system used in the GTU and the Mahalands.

At this stage, no murders or other crimes committed by Joey or his Crewmembers (unless there's a big one I'm spacing on) are currently the concern of the legal authorities within GTU controlled territories, so long as they watch their behaviour if and when they ARE within GTU territories.

In the event anyone gets sore against Joey or any of his crew for the gopniks, dwarves or OG they have killed, a bounty would be posted.

If he kills a factotum, soldier, vanguard or anyone on the GTU payroll tho...
