Hello and welcome back to the Big Tank! This is an evo game where each poster progresses the evolution of a species by adding a single trait to them in paint or the art program of their choice. At the end of the thread, I will pick up to six species to survive and be the starting species for the next thread.

It has gotten a lot colder in era 3; some parts of the ocean are now frozen all year round. Our starting species are the Bleen, Bleam, Plimp, Pleamp, Schut, and Schutta! You can see small versions of them in the starting image of this thread, but I will be posting their individual images and descriptions in the following six posts.

I'm sorry for not getting this thread up as soon as the old one died, I was too busy with the holiday crunch to redraw the starting species. As reparations, I will be including the evolutionary trees for all the species so far and explanations for why the survivors were selected after I post the starter species.

The Bleen is a bottom-feeder with sensitive barbels and pseudo-eyes running along its back. Its fins and body are bulky with stores of fat that keep it warm when it's cold and fed when food is scarce.

The Bleam is a filter feeder with a big head and long sticky tendrils that it uses to attach itself to objects while feeding in order to conserve energy.

The Plimp comes from a family of photosynthesizers but, in order to adapt to life in the deep ocean, generates most of its energy via chemosynthesis in bulbous "lanterns" along its stem. These lanterns are warm to the touch and glow faintly.

The Pleamp is a thick-stemmed, scaley plant with large nut-like seeds that are carried away from it by the currents when it comes time for them to germinate.

The Schut is a small, spikey creature with four legs, two arms, and one rear pseudo limb that it uses to attach itself to plants as it feeds. It has rough skin and two rudimentary eyes on stalks.

The Schutta is a muscular burrower that feeds primarily on Pleamp nuts. It has two eye stalks and a motion-sensitive band that stays above the ground even when the Schutta is burrowing.

I'll start with a review of the Scut line! Species that were used at the start of a thread are highlighted with red lines.

These were the easiest picks to make since there were two lineages that clearly got the most love. There were a lot of dead-ends here that were easy to rule out: I'm never going to pick a line that hasn't diverged much from the starting species.

Next, we have the Plimp line!

The lantern plimp was chosen because it was well adapted to the colder and darker waters of era 3, while the pleamp was chosen because it's a named food source for the schutta (which I had already selected to survive).

It broke my heart not to bring any of the floating plonpes forward into this era, but they just weren't as well adapted to the environment.

Finally, we have the Bleem line.

The fatty Bleen was an obvious choice when going into a colder era, but the second pick was harder. In the end, I chose the Bleam over the poisonous Bleenta because it fills a more unique niche. We have another small sharp species, but we do not have another filter feeder!

The Stalkbanded Schutto has shifted their eye stalks further down their body, no longer capping the large, bulbous motion-sensitive organ. This allows a greater range of detection from the rudimentary organ, though not necessarily better detection, while also allowing the Schutto to see what the fuck it's doing while burrowing. The eyestalks, however, are much weaker, and the Schutto relies on its motion detector more often.

The Scut has developed an additional spike around its mouth. This hollow, hypodermic appendage allows the creature to pry open nuts or pierce plants more easily in order to suck out their nutrients. In the rare instances in which it is used for self defense, it has been ineffective in piercing shells, but does penetrate blubber more readily and is adept and siphoning blood.

The Plamp has pivoted from hard-shelled nuts to softer, juicier berries, which carry the same distinct bioluminescent chemicals. The berries are simultaneously spare batteries and enticing snacks that attract hungry organisms to aid in spreading the seed far and wide. The berries float upwards when detached, germinate in the sun, and gradually sink back to the bottom. Though the berries float, they do not reach the surface-- only high enough to ride tides and collect sunlight.

The Bleep's fins have rotated ninety degrees along its body, shifting to the sides rather than the top and bottom. The Bleep has also shifted some of its pseudo-eyes along its stomach, in roughly symmetrical fashion. This has allowed for greater mobility and maneuverability, as the Bleep can wiggleswim in a eel-like fashion, allowing it to move in any given direction. Faster than its Bleen brothers, it continues to bottom-feed for scraps, but also occasionally goes after still-living plant matter or Schutta and Schut eggs. It has no offensive capabilities to attack directly, and instead attempts to bait the mothers forward before outmaneuvering and swimming above and behind into their nest.

Note: perspective is hard and I'm bad at art, so try to imagine that the fins and body folds match up. Also, if you're good at art, please do more than imagine, and redraw accordingly. Thank you.

The Bleam has evolved long, thin tentacles that provide it with some sense directly in front of it, and also help to propel it through the water. On the end of each tentacle is a thicker part that can more easily stick to surfaces, if it ever needs to drag itself.

Some individuals there diet became so extremely reliant on one food source that they started having trouble digesting anything else not agreeing with there system falling into a race of optimizing to eat these nuts as fast as possible before they sprout,
these heavy limbs forced there body to optimize towards moving in one direction with cephalization and even more bilateral symmetry

Bean have started shifting towards Carangiform swimming creating thrust by rapidly moving the posterior third of the body the fatty cheeks on the side of its "head" helps directing the body towards food along with bending of the body, grappling on with stronger curved barbels with limited range of movement that grapple onto the food

Mendax Quadpod Unicorn Slurpscut repurposed further spikes into pseudo limbs latching onto the plant alternating with the other pair to inch forward in coporation with the legs and arms, but also allows it to keep hold of the stalk and arch its back stabbing outwards with its defensive spikes, even if the feeding tube tends to get stuck due to its angle

Parasitism gives nothing in the relationship, while not directly harming the host does indirectly harm by limiting energy that could be used for reproduction, so with there limited genetic toolbox without recessive genetics to pull upon pressure for a thicker skin cam natural resulting in a thicker skinned layered stem and bigger leafs ontop to collect more energy as well just a small bit more energy is the difference between life and death

Hello everyone; we're halfway through the thread, which means it's time for a Big Tank Forecast!

Life in the oceans of the big tank will continue to get COLDER, DARKER, and SALTIER as the ice caps cover more of the surface. The six species best adapted to cope with these environmental factors are the most likely to survive into the next thread- Keep this in mind when evolving!

hunting is plentiful of ground and dirt dwellers so no need to go after plimp or plamp dewlling scut as often.
that does explain how the sack does not get punctured, but the how and why it does not, the sack is a sort of "shed" layer like a half independent layer or colony of its own cells forming a bubble around the body filled with a mix of gas and fluids that naturally filters oxygen in by osmosis from gas exhalations leaving the bubble, other then that it forms insulation of sorts against the cold saving its heat this does come with some downsides of drag and fragility........ but damn that sack and color communication is attractive just watch how it sensually obscures the profile how the internal color flecks just dance defying simple surface geometry.

other then sexual selection and insulation not having water rushing over its surface cool as much it gives natural buoyancy making it more energy efficient and generally makes it look bigger

internal liquids has to become more inefficient to not freeze it balances out as cold waters can hold a much greater amount of oxygen but the cold still effects the metabolism quite harshly so its a dance to keep in some sensible middleground to not fall into a possible endless torpor as a chunk of organic ice waiting hundred of years to melt again if it does not shatter from the ice shifting and cracking.

No, my plan is to only have six starters for each thread- two from each of the original lines. This is to keep me from going overboard on starters because I think a bunch of them look cool.

The Tlump.
As a deterrent device, it has developed a very dilute toxin that it can emit into the surrounding seawater
it doesnt do much harm, but can deter anything trying to eat it

and if plant based toxin is too advanced, we might have to back a few steps.
