Your name is Karada Kogeki, and you're an amateur Featherweight boxer about to turn pro. Well, you will be shortly, if you're lucky.

You arrived at Korakuen Hall about an hour ago with your coach, both the place where professional boxers gather to fight, and where the pro exams are held. Today is the day of the Class C licensing exam, which will allow you to fight in 4-round professional matches if you pass. The exam is given in two parts - you've already finished the written portion of the exam, and now you're waiting to be called for your practice spar, which is the big determiner of whether or not you'll be given a license. Your nerves are flaring up a little, so you're trying to calm down a little before your number is up by practicing your movements in front of the restroom's mirror.

Earlier as you were coming up to the hall, a reporter with a cigarette stopped you to ask you some questions. You recall him asking about your fighting style; you ended up describing yourself mostly as...

>A. A close-range infighter, who rushes straight in to close the distance and deliver powerful point-blank blows (Makunouchi style)

>B. A mid-range infighter, who plants his feet to slug it out with precise punches (Sendo style)

>C. A technical outboxer, who compensates for average punching power and speed with superior precision and footwork (Kimura style)

>D. A speedy outboxer, who relies on fast, efficient movement and quick combinations to overwhelm their opponent (Itagaki style)

>E. A long-range outboxer, with a huge reach and strong defense to control the pace of a match (Mashiba style)

>F. A hybrid boxer-fighter, who can fight most ranges at a decent level (Takamura style)

>G. A counter-based boxer, which relies on predicting the opponent's movements to make up for weak punching power (Miyata style)

>H. A tricky boxer, who uses misdirection along with less traditional boxing techniques to confuse and disorient the opponent (Aoki style)

>I. A no-guard fighter, who supplements risky, free-flowing movements with natural brawling instincts and hard punching power (Yabuki style)

>J. A switch hitter, who plays mind games with his opponents at mid-range by constantly switching tactics and ruining their pace

>K. A dirty fighter, where the rules are only a suggestion and fouls are legal if you don't get caught

You recall defining your style at first as a hybrid boxer-fighter type, a style a lot of boxers seem to be developing in the modern ring. You try to keep your repertoire versatile, but your coach always taught you that strong fundamentals are the most important thing to have as a boxer.

That said, you're also pretty keen on playing mind games with your opponents, so you've practiced a few styles on your own time to catch them off-guard - you've practiced sparring southpaw before, though your punching power is marginally weaker when you do this. You've also messed around with a no-guard stance, and found that you're able to bob and weave a little easier when you're not worrying about defense, but that comes with its own risks. And you'd never tell the reporter or coach this, but if it comes down to it, throwing out an elbow has always been on the table for you too.

You might have gone a little overboard describing your rather all-encompassing fighting style, but at least the reporter was nice about it.

As the day's events repeat in your mind, your concentration is suddenly broken by someone calling your name. It's the voice of your coach, Hirano-san, an older, rotund man in his 50s. If you pass the exam, you'll be his first pro boxer in quite a long time.

"Karada-kun, your number is about to be called," Hirano-san says, his 'loud' voice barely above his normally-reserved speaking tone as he pokes his head into the restroom. "You don't want to keep the judges waiting."

>A. "Sorry coach."
>B. "Who's my opponent?"
>C. Say nothing and head to the ring
>>
>>5464793
>B. "Who's my opponent?"
Coach is probably going to be worried that we are even asking this question.
>>
>>5464793
>>C. Say nothing and head to the ring
>>
>>5464800
>>5464806

"Who's my opponent?" you ask, grabbing your headgear and coming out of the restroom toward the main hall.

"Just from looking at him, he seemed to be a high-schooler," your coach explains. "Quite a bit shorter than you, but the same weight class. From his stature, I would assume he would be an infighter."

"So keep my distance, wait for him to rush in, and hit him when he pushes up close. That right?"

Coach Hirano gives you a nod. "Be wary, though. Anything can happen in boxing."

You return Coach's nod, and keep quiet until you get back into the hall, trying to focus your mind on the upcoming match.

You head inside Korakuen proper, into the great hall where nearly all the pro boxing matches in eastern Japan take place. You've seen this place on TV and in magazines a lot, though it looks a little different right now as all the lights are on, which illuminate the stands as well as the ring. There's barely anybody in the seats, too - mostly other entrants and their few supporters. Taking in the atmosphere, you acknowledge the judges seated at a nearby table as your number is called.

Making your way up to the ring, you notice your opponent is already there. Like Coach said, he looks pretty small - you're at least half a head taller than him, and his muscles are pretty lean. Is he really a featherweight?

When you get in the ring and get your headgear on, the referee calls you both over to the middle.

"11 and 12! Kogeki and Makunouchi! Let's have a clean fight, and don't worry about winning or losing. This is just a test of your abilities."

Your opponent, Makunouchi, seems like he barely heard the ref, as he's talking to himself and mumbling something about his movements. Looks like he's just as nervous as you are, maybe even more. You don't notice a coach in his corner, but he does seem to be glancing out into the stands every now and then.

Looking on your mumbling opponent, you figure it's never too early to start the mind games.

"Hey, what do you say the loser buys the winner lunch?" you ask with a cocky grin.

Makunouchi stops whatever he's mumbling and looks up at you with confusion. "Huh? But there's not going to be a winner..."

"There is, and it'll be me. Ramen's my favorite, by the way."

Your opponent's confused look doesn't really go away. "Well, uh. Good luck, then," he mumbles as he heads to his corner. It's hard to say if that worked; he might be too caught up in his own head to pay your taunting any mind.

You turn to go back to your corner, and notice that reporter from earlier in the stands in the direction Makunouchi was glancing. He's seated next to a huge guy with a respectable pompadour, who kind of looks familiar to you, but you can't really place why.

Adjusting your headgear and gloves one last time, Coach gives you a thumbs-up from the stands nearby, as if to say the rest is up to you.

You decide to meet Makunouchi head-on, and rush toward the center of the ring with your guard slightly up.

As soon as you get into punching distance, you throw a jab, which Makunouchi blocks with a pretty solid guard. He responds with a one-two of his own, which you block in turn. You note the firmness of his basic combo - he's a heavier puncher than you expected.

You exchange blows against each other's guards for a little bit, attempting to get a rhythm going and learn the other's patterns and range. Makunouchi's arms are pretty short, so you can stay at a greater distance in relative safety, but if the Coach was right, he'll try to duck under your guard eventually and get a heavy punch in. You figure should take the initiative before he gets a chance.

You decide instead of risking getting punched, you'll let Makunouchi tire himself out, and aim for a counter. That'll keep you from getting nailed yourself, and probably look good to the judges too.

Tightening your block, you let Makunouchi keep swinging. Even with all your efforts focused on defense, letting him wail on you like this is actually pretty difficult. If he kept going for a long time like this, he'd probably break your guard pretty quick. Fortunately, Makunouchi's punches get repetitive pretty quick. A jab, followed by a one-two, jab, one-two... you've got the rhythm down now.

After his next jab, you drop your guard and throw a sudden punch right in the path of where his head moves during the first punch of his one-two. He doesn't see it coming, and runs right into your fist face-first. The headgear absorbs some of the impact, but Makunouchi pulls himself back quickly; looks like the blow rattled him and disrupted his pace.

You quickly seize the opportunity and press the attack, laying into Makunouchi with a flurry of jabs and combinations. You're not the hardest puncher out there, certainly not compared to him, but the damage of the counter definitely opened him up for you to suppress his offense with your own.

Eventually, Makunouchi is able to tighten his guard back up and better weather your assault, though he's clearly taken more damage than you at this point. There might not be a 'winner' in this match, but you definitely feel like you're in the lead right now.

He might be guarding right now, but you should still capitalize on his damage. You decide to keep up your offense, if nothing else to at least keep him from attacking you.

A few seconds into this strategy, a booming voice suddenly rings out from the stands. "COME ON IPPO, HE'S MAKING A FOOL OUTTA YOU! HIT HIM BACK, DAMMIT!"

You turn your head toward the source of the yelling - it's the guy with the pompadour next to the reporter, who's grabbing at him with a nervous face trying to get him to calm down. The thrashing and flailing of fists tells you it's not going well.

Realizing your concentration was broken, you quickly return your attention back to Makunouchi, whose expression has tightened. Taking advantage of your momentary distraction, he pushes toward you with his gloves at his face. You throw a defensive jab out of instinct, but with unexpected speed, he weaves his head under your punch, pushing in with a low stance toward your chest. Shit, he's about to nail you in the body with a big one...

In a panic, your first instinct is to pull yourself out of the way of Makunouchi's punch. However, he's not going to let you get away so easily, and he steps in to follow your dodge. In an instant, he's closed the gap, and follows up with a huge hook to your side.

The pain is excruciating, the shock hitting you instantly and almost causing you to double over right then and there. Makunouchi isn't done quite yet though, and follows up with a short uppercut right to your jaw, your brain rattling from the impact and breaking your focus entirely.

You aren't quite sure how many punches he throws next, but they all hurt a lot, and before you know it, you're on the verge of going down yourself.

Admittedly I haven't been following the series as long as some people have, only got into it last year, but it's definitely a top 3 series overall for me.
Also sent me on a sports manga binge after catching up, followed it up with Ashita no Joe and Slam Dunk, and gonna move onto Baki at some point

Can highly recommend REAL. It's a very solid read. I'd also say check out Musashi (Also by Inoue) if you want more philosophical musings and historical samurai stuff.
Also on the topic of Baki, it's currently 99% scanned and translated, but a lot of it is kinda subpar. The actual manga is still kino though, fucking great read. AVOID THE ANIME, IT IS SOULLESS.
>>
>>5466305
Thanks to you I remembered Mushishi which while not sport themed is still a great manga
>>
Speaking of boxing manga, I recall RRR being fun and (relatively) short for a sports manga.
>>5466305
>but a lot of it is kinda subpar
I haven't read Baki myself but as part of the scanlation community I've heard a lot of insane and hilarious things about how someone who's grossly unqualified keeps trying to make themselves the only Baki scanlator. Wildfang I think. Been wanting to read Baki for a while but maybe I'll have to go for the RAWs.
>>
>>5466368
If you can read Japanese, I say go for the raws.
That said, the English scans done by Ichido Reidan/Wildfang are rough as fuck, but not entirely unreadable. In fact I would say that all prospective translators should read them specifically to learn what not to do.
Also don't forget, he's not the only scanlation guy working on the series. Spinyback is usually pretty good with Baki these days, so you can trust their scans.

The manga is mostly identical to the anime, I think there's one or two anime-only fights but you don't miss anything important one way or the other.

It's a pretty one to one adaptation, save for the art style.
The character designs are consistent throughout the entirety of the anime.
Meanwhile in the manga they shift as the author's artistic sensibilities shifted over the years.
None of it looks bad mind you, but it is noticeable when reading the manga.

I'm happy so many people have noticed this thread and want to jump in.

I'll do my best to keep it interesting for all of you, and I'll make sure easy to keep up with if you don't know the series or have little boxing knowledge, since I think that's one of the great things about Ippo.

For those who do know the series, I'm currently planning things up to the Rookie Kings. Currently mulling over if I want to keep the brackets for that close to canon, or mix it up a bit

"Thanks. But it looks like we tied in the end, so I guess we both owe each other a bowl. Wanna go grab it now?"

Makunouchi looks a little taken aback. "Uh, well, I'd love to, but I think we need to wait until the end to get our licenses. Hopefully we did good enough..."

As you and Makunouchi exit the ring, Coach Hirano comes over to congratulate you. "Well done, Karada-kun. And you as well, Makunouchi-kun. It was quite the spar, and I think you both have nothing to worry about for your scores."

"Ah, well, t-thank you very much sir..." Makunouchi looks down bashfully, blushing at the compliment. "I know I still have a lot to improve on, though."

Suddenly, you hear the sound of a solid punch to someone's cranium, and Ippo lurches forward, grabbing his head and groaning.

"You're damn right you got a lot to improve on! What's up with taking a slow-ass counter like that, huh? Didn't you learn anything from that fight with Miyata?!"

"So what if he's weak to counters? His punches almost killed me," you say, stepping up to the big guy.

He leans over Makunouchi toward you with a condescending look. "Oh, so it's fine if he gets hit by shitty counters?"

You feel your irritation quickly rising with this guy. "Quit giving him a hard time, he did fine!"

Makunouchi glances over with a look of thankfulness, but the big guy pushes him out of the way and gets in your face.
"What does a rookie like you know about good boxing that the great Takamura doesn't? Nothing! Now shut up unless you wanna get hit too!"

Suddenly, the reporter from before catches up from the stands, and steps in between you and the big guy. "Hey hey, easy, easy! You don't wanna get them kicked out before they get their licenses, do you?"

Takamura looks at the reporter for a few seconds, and huffs and turns away. The reporter sighs and turns toward you.
"Sorry about him, he gets real worked up about boxing. Remember me? We talked briefly while you were on your way here."

You shake Fuji's hand and glance over at Takamura. "Who does that guy think he is, anyway?"

"I know what you're thinking, but Takamura isn't someone you should antagonize. He's a pro Middleweight himself, and he's on track to become the Japanese champ in a few months if he keeps winning."

You look back over at Takamura, who's overheard your conversation, and has a smug smile on his face. "Undefeated, baby! Next match'll put me at first rank. But that's just a stepping stone on my way to the world!"

"...some people just let success get to their head I guess," you remark.

Fujii silently nods. "Anyway, today's about you guys. You and Makunouchi both had great showings, speaking as someone who's seen a lot of these spars. I'd put you in the top three boxers who turned out today."

"Top three? W-Wow, that's high praise, thank you..." Makunouchi chuckles under his breath at the compliment.

"Who's the third in that rank?" You quickly ask.

Fujii chuckles knowingly. "Well, take a seat, 'cause his match is up next."

You head over to the stands with Fujii, Makunouchi and Takamura following you and sitting nearby. The next competitors head up into the ring; one of them is significantly taller and lankier than the other, with long, wild hair.

The two boxers in the ring go to their corners, the spar about to begin. The tall one goes into the corner closest to you, and you get a better look at his admittedly scary-looking face, adorned by thick eyebrows and a devilish scowl.

"What's so special about him?" You ask Fujii.

"Just watch," he says as the bell rings.

At the start, Mashiba's opponent rushes toward him, but Mashiba himself only steps forward a little bit while holding his ground. You notice he has an odd guard, where his left arm is lowered and his right stays high.

"Oh, he uses the Hitman style?" Takamura says aloud. "No wonder, you don't see a rookie fight like that every day."
"Hitman style?" Makunouchi asks.
"It's a style of boxing suited to someone with long arms like his," Takamura elaborates. "I feel sorry for his opponent, he's not gonna see any of those jabs coming."

Before you can ask what Takamura means, Mashiba throws the first punch - from really far away, catching his opponent way off-guard. From close to where he began the match, Mashiba throws a fast series of jabs from below at his opponent near the center, using only his left. His opponent is panicking, and turtles up to weather the storm of jabs.

"He can't get past all those weird jabs! That's ridiculous!" Makunouchi exclaims in shock.
"Yep. With the Hitman style, Mashiba can throw flicker jabs real quick, and from much farther away than an ordinary jab would reach. It comes at an odd angle too, so if you're not used to it, it's near impossible to get used to in a single round."

You've heard of flicker jabs before - basically underhand jabs - but you've never seen it in-person. "Mashiba definitely has the reach advantage, but he's pretty tall for a featherweight. A stringbean like him would snap with one or two good shots to the body."

"The problem is getting to his body," Takamura counters. "Even if you rush past his flickers, he's certainly got another punch to defend himself."

Mashiba's opponent is clearly frustrated, and attempts to do his best to ignore the pain of the flickers to rush Mashiba's body. He gets lucky, as Mashiba seems to let him get close.

"All right! He's in!" Makunouchi exclaims. "He just has to get a good body blow now!"

You notice Mashiba's expression tighten into a sadistic grin, as he raises his right arm and slams it into his opponent's head from on high. As his opponent's attention was drawn to avoiding Mashiba's flickers, he never saw it coming, and is blasted backwards to the floor.

The ref steps in, and Mashiba looms over his KO'd opponent with glee, looking down with an honestly-terrifying gaze. The atmosphere in the room is tense, and everyone's fallen silent from the display of violence in the ring. Makunouchi looks particularly stunned.

"Why didn't he dodge that punch?" you wonder aloud.
"He just didn't see it coming is all," Takamura explains. "The pressure of those flickers is mental as well as physical. You get so caught up trying to guard or dodge them all, you forget that there's a whole 'nother arm you need to worry about."

You make a mental note to ask Coach Hirano for anti-flicker training, while noticing Makunouchi hasn't budged, beads of sweat falling from his face.
"Scared, Makunouchi?" you ask him playfully. He nods.
"Well, you should be!" Takamura exclaims. "That guy's an infighter killer if I've ever seen one! Better hope you never have to fight him!"

"You might have to if you plan on entering the Rookie Kings tournament in a few months," Fujii mentions. "He'll definitely be there, like the rest of the big-names of this generation. Mashiba, Hayami, Miyata..."

"Miyata..." Makunouchi seems fixated on that name.

"Anyway," Fujii says, "That was the last spar. They'll give out the licenses soon to those who passed, and then you get to look forward to your debut fights."

Your debut fight... you look over at your coach, who was observing the fight from across the way. He seems pretty deep in thought.

"We should get going once you grab yours, Ippo," Takamura says. "The old man'll be happy to see you got your license."

Makunouchi's expression shifts to a beaming smile. "You think so? Gosh, I can't wait to show him then!"

I hope we can get a debut match lined up soon-ish.
Given a month or two to tune-up and it's almost a sure win.
That said, fate can always throw us a curve-ball. I'd hate to have to fight a a contender right off the bat.
I think the worst case scenario would be Ryuchi Hayami, that suave bastard.
We're both All-Rounders, but he's at an entirely different level. The guy had 56 amateur bouts before he even stepped into the ring as a pro.
It probably won't happen, but I still can't help but wonder what we'd even do against somebody that's just definitively better than us.

A week has passed since you received your Class C license, and you officially became a pro boxer. The spar you had with Makunouchi is still replaying in your mind - he's the hardest puncher you've ever encountered, and you hope someday you can fight him in a real match.

Today though, you're doing your regular practice at the Hirano gym, where you've been practicing for the last three or four months. It's a small gym, nestled in a quiet corner of Tokyo, where hardly anybody passes by. The gym only has a small amount of amateurs who practice infrequently, and as of last week, you are the gym's first professional boxer in at least a decade. Although the gym is unpopular, that just means Coach Hirano can focus on training you with little interference.

Today's training begins like any other. After some warm-up exercises, you get in the ring with Coach and start doing some mitt-hitting. Despite his rotund frame, Coach Hirano has the speed in his arms to make hitting the mitts a challenge, which helps train your perception and reaction speed as well as your form.

"Any news on my debut match?" you ask excitedly, as you have been for the last week.
"Ho ho, be patient, Karada-kun," he responds, as he also has for the last week. "There are plenty of boxers to choose from, but I still have to seek one who will accept a challenge from a debuting boxer."

An easy win would be nice, you think. But would you really learn much from that? You'd get more out of fighting someone much stronger than you, but you might lose your debut match, and that won't feel good at all. Someone around your relative strength would be good, but how do you even measure that? Maybe easy is the way to go, but...

The questions swirl in your head, but you figure Coach will line up whatever he thinks is best for you anyway, so you just stay quiet.

About 20 minutes into your mitt-hitting, the office phone rings. Could that be someone accepting one of your challenges? Coach excuses himself and goes to answer the phone while your mind wanders at the possibilities.

Listening in on the conversation from afar, Coach seems... worried? By his tone, it doesn't sound like good news, though you can't make out exactly what he's saying. After a few minutes, he hangs up the phone, and comes out with a look of concern.

"Everything alright?" you ask.
"Yes, all is well," he responds. "I've just, erm, received... well, we may have a new recruit joining us today."

"A new guy? That's great," you say enthusiastically. A sparring partner other than Coach would be great, honestly. "So what's that look for then? You don't think I'm gonna scare him off, do you?"

Coach Hirano lets out a small sigh. "You see, Karada-kun... I have this nephew, and, well... it seems like he's been getting into some trouble as of late." His eyes grows a little weary.
"Trouble?" you ask.
"Yes, that was actually a call from the police station," he says quietly. Wait, did he say police? "It seems my nephew was arrested recently for assault charges."

Jeez. No wonder he's tense.

"So how does that make him a new recruit?" you question.

"Well, the police called because his parents told them about our gym," Coach explains. "He's quite young, a little more than you, and still in high school. It sounded like they were hoping instead of sending him to juvenile hall, we would take him in as part of a deal to keep him out of police custody, and perhaps give him an outlet for his... aggression. Sort of like community service, I suppose, though I wish they had asked me first."

A kid becoming a boxer to avoid jail time for assault. Almost sounds like something out a manga.

"I told them I would consider the deal, so they'll be sending someone over to work out the details. It is somewhat good for us, as we have so few boxers, I wouldn't have any issues devoting attention to training two students. I just have to wonder if Hitoshi-kun will take to it well... he's always been the feisty type, who never liked being told what to do.

"If anyone can handle a problem kid, it's you, Coach. After all, you helped me out when I needed it." Coach Hirano's mood seems to lift a bit from your comment.

"And if you want, I'll break him in for you too. Gotta repay everything you did for me, y'know."

Coach breaks into a slight smile. "Ho ho... I hope that won't be necessary. If he ends up joining our gym, though, I'm sure he will make a wonderful sparring partner for you once he acclimates."
Coach looks genuinely thankful for your pep talk. Seems like he is feeling better about this.

"Hitoshi-kun will be here with a police escort in about an hour. Let's break until then, so I can prepare for his arrival."

Coach takes off his mitts and heads to his office, leaving you to practice on your own until his nephew arrives. Who knows, maybe this kid won't be so bad?

An hour goes by, which you spend with the bags while Coach gets ready to receive his nephew from the police. Soon you hear gym's door open, and in walk two people, a high school kid and a police officer.

The kid who's just a bit taller than you, wearing a open-button red school uniform, with short, messy hair and a tight scowl. That must be the nephew, Hitoshi. He definitely looks like a delinquent.

In front of him is a young-looking female police officer, you assume not too much older than you, with a dark uniform and notepad in one hand. She looks around the gym briefly, seeming to take notes of its condition in her mind before turning to face you.

As she walks in, you hear her exchange greetings with the Coach, who pokes his head out of his door a few seconds later.
"Karada-kun, would you mind watching Hitoshi-kun for a bit while I work out the terms of this deal with Officer Sakae?"

He doesn't really leave you much of a choice here. You nod, and Coach ducks back into his office.

You look over at Hitoshi, who's glaring back at you from the door with a disdainful frown. He looks pretty fit already. You'd peg him as a Lightweight, maybe a Jr. Lightweight if he did some weight control.

If it goes through, we can go for an uppercut to his stomach, it would be enough to hurt, but not enough to deal serious damage.
But I would rather leave the beating if he throws a tantrum, so it's an actual lesson.

"I'm Karada Kogeki," you quickly introduce yourself and offer a handshake, deciding to be civil.

Hitoshi just glares at you, not responding.

"...so, you like ramen?"

No answer, more glares. Now you're getting a little annoyed.

"Well, nice to meet you, Hitoshi-kun," you say with emphasis on the -kun, lowering your hand.
His brow furrows at that one.
"Wanna say that again, asshole?!" He quickly gets in your face - looks like he's got a hair-trigger temper. No wonder Coach was worried.

"Say what? I was just welcoming you to our gym, Hitoshi-kun," you say again, emphasizing the honorific once more.
"Oh, you're askin' for it, buddy! I don't care if you're some big-shot boxer, I'll smash your face in all the same!"

You look at him for a second, and get a wicked idea, a devious smile crossing your face.
"You know we're in a boxing gym, right? So fighting's totally cool. Wanna get in the ring and do some sparring?"

Hitoshi looks confused for a second, but quickly gives you a big nod. "Yeah, let's do it! I'm gonna beat your ass, boxer-boy!"
Within a few minutes, you get Hitoshi set up with a pair of heavy gloves and some headgear, which he only puts on with some insisting, and climbs into the ring to wait for you.

When you go to grab your own practice gloves, a dark thought crosses your mind.
You could put on your heavy 14oz gloves that you'd normally for practice spars... or you could use your normal 10oz gloves, so your speed and power are in top-form. It's not a big difference, considering Hitoshi doesn't know boxing forms or technique, but he also wouldn't be able to tell... and it would help you illustrate the gap between you and him.

>A. Keep it clean and fair, put on the heavy gloves
>B. Put this kid in his place, use the 10oz gloves

Although it's tempting to go all-out against this kid from the start, you realize it'd look bad on you and the Coach if you ended up beating him to a pulp here and now.
You definitely shouldn't even be sparring right now, but maybe it'll be fine if you hold back some.

Putting on the heavy gloves, you get up in the ring and put up your guard. Hitoshi mimics your form, though it's a little off.

"Whenever you're ready," you tell Hitoshi. He turns his head downward and starts to approach you, walking straight toward your guard. You can can tell he's trying to figure out how best to hit you, but he's taking a while to do it.

"What are you waiting for, Hitoshi-kun?" you taunt him, and his eyes quickly narrow in anger. He starts throwing out random swings, but they're either slow enough to dodge, or have no power behind them, allowing you to easily parry them. You hold yourself back from actually attacking for the time being, which just causes Hitoshi to get more worked up and frustrated, making his swings worse.

"God dammit! Let me hit you!" He winds up for a big swing!

"Make your swings more compact," you instruct Hitoshi. He grits his teeth and keeps swinging at you, but they're not quite as wide as they were before.
"A little better, but I'll go easy on you until you can actually hit me," you tell him.
"I'll smash your face in for that!" he yells, continuing to come at you.

About ten or fifteen minutes pass, where you continue to dodge or block Hitoshi's punches, but even in this short time his form quickly improves. His punches get closer and closer to hitting you square with each throw, though they're still a long way from perfect.

He definitely has the attitude of a street brawler, and his stamina is pretty good considering how long you've been sparring, but he'll still need a lot of work if Coach wants to whip him into a proper boxer.

Soon, you hear Coach and Officer Sakae come out of the office. Coach tilts his head at you.
"In the ring with him already? It's far too soon for him to be sparring..."
Yeah, you didn't start sparring until weeks after you started.

"I just wanted to show him the ropes," you say. "He's got potential."

Hitoshi side-eyes you. Maybe he only just realized you weren't messing with him the entire time.

"Be that as it may, you should have asked me before starting to spar with Hitoshi-kun," Coach chides you. "Though I suppose it doesn't matter now. The terms of our agreement are settled, so Hitoshi-kun will be a member of this gym for at least one year, starting today."

You look over at Hitoshi, who seems to have cooled off a little. He doesn't seem particuarly happy or upset, but this must beat going to juvie.

"I won't ask that you try to go pro if you don't want to," Coach says, addressing Hitoshi. "I only ask that you put your heart into practice and try to improve. If you do well in drills, I don't see why I couldn't put you in the ring with Karada-kun in the future again, if you'd like."

"...whatever," Hitoshi says dismissively, taking off the gloves for now. Seems like he's not interested if he isn't fighting you.

"Karada-kun," Coach says to you, "It's about time for your roadwork. Get some water and take Hitoshi with you, once he's caught his breath."

"Yes sir," you respond affirmingly to Coach.

"Seems like we're leaving Hitoshi-kun in good hands," Officer Sakae says. "I'll be returning to the station, then. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you need to."
With a nod, she departs.

As she leaves, you sidle over to Hitoshi and whisper.
"I'll treat you to a bowl of ramen for that fight. There's this place I've been meaning to try, we can stop by during roadwork."

Hitoshi looks back with a blank expression. "What's, uh... what's roadwork mean?"

Kid's got a lot to learn.

We back

You've headed out for your sorta-daily jog around town, with Hitoshi in tow. You don't really have a set route, but today you plan on hitting up a ramen place with your new kouhai. It shouldn't be too far of a run.

While you're very used to the strain of your roadwork, Hitoshi is sweating buckets and looks super ragged. You figured that he had some good stamina, but maybe he's not as used to running as you are. He didn't have any workout clothes with him either, so you let him borrow some shorts, and Coach managed to find a shirt his size, adorned with the gym's name and logo.

Heaving behind you but still keeping up decently with your pace, Hitoshi groans and wheezes. "How long... do you do this crap for?!"

"We're making room for the ramen," you tell him. Hitoshi groans.
"What the hell is with you and ramen..." you hear him mumble.

"We aren't even halfway done, you know," you mention. "Wanna quit?"
"You know I can't!" he retorts with a snap.
"Well, suck it up then. Running builds stamina and improves your footwork. We'll do some basic strength training when we get back too; some push-ups and sit-ups, so you'll punch harder and take hits better."
"So much work..." he grumbles.

Your roadwork eventually takes you toward the restaurant you wanted to check out, a local ramen shop that has some pretty good reviews.

Once Hitoshi catches up, you both walk into the place, and a young-looking guy with a mildly thuggish face at the front waves you in with a smile. Seems like he's the chef.

"Welcome to Chuuka Soba! Grab a seat, I'll take your order in a second."

You take a seat up at the counter, Hitoshi slowly following and grabbing the seat next to yours. After a few seconds, the chef comes over and slides you both some glasses of water.

"Yeah, I just got my license," you proudly say, then point to Hitoshi. "He's a work in progress though; it's his first day. So let's celebrate it, yeah?"
Hitoshi side-eyes you while attempting to coolly take a big sip of his water.

"I see, I thought so! So, you just turned pro, and he's a fresh recruit, huh? Hang on just a minute..."

The chef goes over to his station, and after a minute or two, comes over with huge bowls of ramen, packed with proteins and vegetables.

"You looked like you just came off your roadwork, so here you go: two bowls of Stamina Ramen, on the house! To celebrate you becoming a pro, and his starting on the road there!"

Hitoshi's eyes go wide and he wastes no time accepting this gift, slapping his hands together, giving a quick bow, and beginning to wolf down the tall bowl of noodles.

"That's real nice of you, thanks mister."
You glance at Hitoshi, who's eating his food super fast. "Your stomach's gonna hurt later if you eat that fast," you tell him, which he ignores.

"Oh, I'm Karada Kogeki, and he's... Hitoshi." You realize you don't know Hitoshi's family name...

"Nice to meet you! I'm Aoki Masaru," the chef says with a grin. "Just call me Aoki."

"Good to meet you," you say before taking a taste of your ramen.
It's... indescribably delicious! You can't stop yourself from slurping up a fistful of noodles, to which Aoki gives a satisfied look.

Between bites, you attempt to keep the conversation going out of curiosity.
"So are you a regular at Korakuen or something?"

Aoki chuckles. "You could say that! I happen to be a pro boxer in the Lightweight division myself, so I know all the rigors of training, and what foods work best for a quick recovery. You ever get hungry during training, just come down here and I'll set you up - as long as you aren't doing weight control, that is!"

Hitoshi is still gobbling down his ramen, but he looks like he's enjoying it. He's nearly done, while you've still got half to go.

"I like my mind games," you say.
Aoki nods approvingly to that. "A cerebral fighter, much like myself. Knowing is half the battle - I understand completely!"

"Other than that, I just try to keep my fundamentals strong so I can do a little bit of everything," you explain. "As for boxers I look up to..."

Yeah, you kind of draw a blank there. There's nobody you'd really say you're a fan of. Do you even know the names of any other boxers? Shit, what's the name of the champ again?

"...Eiji Date," you vaguely recall.
Aoki makes an approving noise. "Yeah, it makes sense. He's a pretty strong champ, and that comeback to the top was really inspiring. You hardly ever see guys that age get the belt, let alone do it twice."

Aoki looks over at Hitoshi expectantly. "What about you?"

Hitoshi, who's just finished the last of his ramen, puts down the bowl with a huge, satisfied sigh. "I don't really know any boxers."
Aoki raises an eyebrow. "Really? Not a single one?"
Hitoshi shakes his head. "I don't know much about boxing."

Aoki crosses his arms and gives Hitoshi a slightly judgmental look. "Why'd you get into boxing if you don't know the sport?"

"His case is kind of unique," you say, speaking on Hitoshi's behalf. "His uncle's my coach."
Aoki raises an eyebrow. "So it's a family thing?"
"That's one way to put it," you admit. "He's a delinquent, and a hothead who likes to hit things."
Hitoshi immediately swivels in your direction and grabs the collar of your running jacket.
"Who the hell's a hothead who likes to hit things?!"

"...I see what you mean," Aoki says with a wry smile. "But you know what? A lot of boxers started out as delinquents who got into it to blow some steam off. Heck, I was one of 'em!"

Hitoshi blinks, letting go of your jacket. "Seriously? You were a punk?"
"Sure was, but that's all behind me now," Aoki says with a hint of nostalgia. "When the Chief let us join his gym, I ended up dedicating myself to boxing without really realizing it. One minute I just wanted to get revenge on some guy who beat me up, the next thing I knew I was debuting as a pro. Now I can't imagine doing anything else! Besides making ramen, that is."

Hitoshi looks kind of stunned. This isn't what you were expecting to happen at all today.

"Did you ever get revenge on that guy?" you ask.

Aoki freezes. "Well, uh. Not exactly. But I'm close!"
Close? What does that-

Suddenly, the door to the restaurant slams open from a hard kick.
"Yo! Your king is here for his tribute, peasant chef!"

That familiar voice belongs to Takamura, who makes his way toward the counter with a wide-legged strut. He sits down next to Hitoshi, who looks just a little annoyed at his bravado.

This might not go so well.

In the few seconds between Takamura's entrance to Chuuba Soba and his taking a seat, the friendly Aoki's demeanor took a 180, and he now looks incredibly pissed off.

"You know I have other customers here, right? So quit scaring them off!" he growls.
"What's the problem with me trying to get a bite to eat?" Takamura retorts with a condescending smile. "I know it's hard life you got, being such a crappy boxer and all, but you don't have to take it out on your customers!"

Hitoshi's already looking like he's about to say something to Takamura, and it doesn't seem like it'll be polite...

"Do you know this guy, Aoki?" you ask.
He sighs with agitation.
"Unfortunately, we have the pleasure of being gym-mates," he says with exasperation.

Takamura turns toward you when you speak up, and you give him a little wave.
"Huh? Do I know... oh, yeah! You were that guy that cleaned Ippo's clock at the licensing exam!"
"Say what?" Aoki looks at you with surprise. "Seriously, you were the guy Ippo fought for his license?"

You nod at Aoki, and turn back slightly toward Takamura. "Would it kill you to be a little nicer?"

Hitoshi's annoyance has lessened a bit, but he's probably still uncomfortable being in the middle of all this. You quietly ask if he wants to switch seats, which he nods to and gets up to do... until Takamura drapes a beefy arm around his shoulders.

"Then who's this guy, then? One of the guys at your gym, killer?" he asks with a more sincere smile.
Hitoshi grits his teeth, and grabs Takamura's wrist off his shoulder, throwing it off him and standing up. "Get your arm off me, asshole!"

Aoki looks mortified. Takamura looks some mix of upset and startled. Your stomach drops...

"Hitoshi, cut it out! And keep your hands to yourself, big guy!"

Hitoshi and Takamura look at you in unison with fire in their eyes; both of them seem like they're one step from pounding your face in.

You take a deep breath. "Please, not in front of the ramen," you plead with a gentle tone.

All three of the guys in front of you look at you like you're crazy.
"What the hell is with him and ramen?" Takamura wonders.
"Right?! He's obsessed!" Hitoshi concurs.
"Is he really weird about noodles?" Aoki asks. "Is it safe for him to be in here?"

"A-Anyway, let's not cause a scene," you interject, attempting to change the subject. "Yes, Hitoshi is new at my gym, just joined today..."
"Is that so?" Takamura wonders, taking his arm back, seeming to have forgotten Hitoshi's slight. Hitoshi seems to have given it up too, walking around toward your side.

"Yeah, Karada there said he was a punk who liked to beat people up, just like us before we joined the Kamogawa gym!" Aoki looks particularly proud of that.
"Yeah?" Takamura murmurs, leaning in a bit toward Hitoshi, who leans away. "So you just wanna beat people up but get people to cheer for you, then?"

Hitoshi looks away for a second. "Uh, I mean..."
Takamura raises an eyebrow, probably hoping for a good answer. Maybe you should help him out here.

"He'll quit in a week," you flatly say.

Hitoshi looks at you with an offended expression, to which you put your hands up defensively.
"Just kidding, dude..." you take a breath to calm your nerves after that one, thinking of the nicest way you could explain Hitoshi's circumstances.

"His parents, uh, wanted him to join up," you say with a slight shake to your voice.

Takamura frowns. This doesn't seem like the answer he wanted to hear.

"Boxing's not some after-school club! You gotta be serious about it if you want to be any good!"
"Well, he's got a bit of a temper," you say, attempting to defend Hitoshi, but are cut off by the punk speaking up for himself.
"It's not like I wanted to join a gym in the first place," Hitoshi hisses. "I didn't ask to do this stupid boxing shit!"

Takamura's nostrils flare, and his eyes grow wide with fury. You think Hitoshi just made it much worse.

What follows can only be described as a full-scale destruction of the counter at Chuuba Soba, which you and Hitoshi barely escape intact from. You feel bad leaving Aoki alone with a raging Takamura, but you never would have left that store alive.

Such sacrilege, such desecration... you'll avenge those noodles some day. Not today, though.

"All boxers are strong," you sagely tell Hitoshi. "But Takamura is just insane."
He nods in agreement, still catching his breath.
"We're gonna have to apologize to Aoki for leaving him like that," you add. He nods again.

After a moment of recovery, you and Hitoshi walk to a nearby vending machine, where you buy him and yourself some water.

"You shouldn't have pissed him off," you say when you hand Hitoshi his drink.
"You pissed him off too," he retorts while opening his bottle. You pause to think on it. "Yeah, that was my fault too," you admit.
He shrugs.

You both spend a quiet few moments chugging water to get your stamina back. You might have an opportunity now to actually get to know Hitoshi a little better, or you could leave it alone for today and just head back.

"So... how many guys have you beat up in your day?" you ask Hitoshi.

He looks at you with weariness. "Hell of a lot," he says. "They were all pickin' fights with me though. So it was all self-defense... 'cept the last one, I guess."
He takes a little sip from what remains of his water, a bit pensive.

"...the one that got you arrested," you guess.
He nods, still sipping.
"What'd that guy do?"

Hitoshi pauses for a few seconds, lowering his water after.
"Was an ass to my older sister. An ex, wouldn't leave her alone. Came by the house, told him to piss off or I'd kick his ass. He wouldn't, so I did."
Sounds like reasonable self-defense to you.

"I guess his dad's some big-shot corporate suit though, so he called the cops and made a big deal out of it," he says. "My folks know I was in the right. Sis even said it was cool I did that. But I guess that don't matter much."

"You did the right thing," you affirm to Hitoshi. "And hey, at least you aren't in jail right now."

He looks up into the nearly street. "Yeah, guess so."

"And training will help you not beat the crap out of more people," you add. "Unless it's in the ring."

"Yeah, yeah," he says. "I'm still just doing this to get out of those charges, so don't expect anything from me. This is just a workout as far as I'm considered."

"Fair enough," you say. "Let's head back to the gym."

You jog back to Hirano Gym with Hitoshi, and do some general strength training for a bit before calling it for the day.

Three weeks pass, most of which Coach's time is spent drilling Hitoshi on the basics of boxing, while you practice on your own, still in anticipation of your coming debut.

Finally, the day comes where Coach greets you with the greatest news you could ever hear:

Oda's probably gonna be a cakewalk for Ippo no matter what. He just doesn't have the talent to make up for his poor work ethic.
Personally speaking, I'm more interested in our match with Ippo in the future.
The way I see it Ippo probably won't learn too much by the time we get a match with him.
To be more specific, whatever he does learn is probably going to be in service of his specialty; slips on the approach before standing and banging.
In contrast, you have Karada who
>has a much wider skillset and overall boxing knowledge
>probably trained way longer than Ippo did before even going pro
>already had his number during their pro test sparring session
Not to mention Ippo has trouble adjusting to mind-games, which are Karada's self professed specialty.
Unless Ippo can survive until Karada gets gassed or makes a critical error, I predict Karada winning by decision.
However , most of our advantages go up in smoke the longer Ippo is allowed to build up experience.
I think it would be in our best interest to fight him early in our career or later after Karada gets his "Final Form" so to speak.
>>
>>5473635
I agree with that whole thing about fighting Ippo, and that's an interesting comparison between them. But as long as we try hard enough we might be able to keep up with him.

I still feel a bit bad for possibly stopping Oda from reigniting his boxing passion. From what I saw watching that episode in his arc he's going to be a strong opponent in the future, and I don't want to ruin that.

>But as long as we try hard enough we might be able to keep up with him
Yeah, it all comes down to how Karada develops as a boxing if I'm being honest. It's all subject to speculation, so I was just making assumptions.
>I still feel a bit bad for possibly stopping Oda from reigniting his boxing passion. From what I saw watching that episode in his arc he's going to be a strong opponent in the future, and I don't want to ruin that.
I get the feeling he's going to retire no matter what after losing to Ippo. If I remember correctly, he later states his main reason for retiring was the fact that he didn't feel he could keep up with "monsters like Ippo", which I think is implied to mean serious contenders.

Hoping to run tonight but it may not be possible, got some urgent stuff I'm trying to get resolved before the time I'd normally run.

If I don't run tonight, I'll hopefully run tomorrow night either way (provided anons are around given the holidays). Friday will for sure be an off-day

Just caught up, gotta say that this is pretty sick Dynamite. Only got one criticism, and that is that there is a severe lack of Ippo OST in this thread. I can think of several moments so far that some songs would have been perfect for, but other than that, great job!

We back

>>5472985

You can hardly believe it... your debut match is finally here, after so many weeks of waiting! In your excitement, the only thing you can say is the most obvious thing to ask:
"Who's my opponent?"

"Your opponent..." Coach trails off, perhaps trying to recall all the details.
"It's his second match, so we have little information to go off of, but on the other hand, your opponent has virtually no information on you. In future matches, we shall have plenty of video tapes to analyze and prepare a strategy, as will the other camp. But this time, we're flying by the seat of our pants, and will have to make assumptions based on the single fight we have."

>A. "That's fine, I'm prepared for this"
>B. "You really don't have any advice for me?"

"Let's see that video," you say. What else is there to do at this point?

You head to the Coach's office with him and Hitoshi, and pop the video in the VCR player, excited to finally see who you'll be facing in your first match.

The tape opens with the match about to start, the boxers in their corners waiting for the bell. After a few seconds, you hear the ding, and both boxers rush to the center to begin the match.

"Your opponent is the one from the left corner," Coach says, pointing at one of the boxers, who has a rather large nose, shaved head, and cocky grin. "His name is Kazuhito Yasukawa."

You note the features of your opponent and try to analyze his style as the round plays out. At first he appears to be a hybrid boxer-fighter, much like yourself, but his style in reality is more straightforward than yours. His pattern is to guard tightly, slip past his opponent's punches once they become predictable, and get close enough to land a big shot - much like what happened to you at your licensing exam.

It's a basic pattern, but an effective one. Every now and then his opponent catches him and hits him with a counter, which sends him down once. However, Yasukawa stubbornly commits to his pattern, which eventually nets him a third-round KO with a huge uppercut. His face is a little swollen by the end, especially his nose, but he's the winner regardless.

"So, Karada-kun. What do you think of Yasukawa? How would you deal with his approach?"

You reflect upon your own abilities for a moment. You're a hybrid boxer-fighter, who can fight decently at most ranges with your highly-practiced fundamentals. Your punching power is pretty average, so you have to out-think your opponent to win. Every boxer has a weakness - what's Yasukawa's, and how would you exploit it?

>A. Tell Coach how you would deal with Yasukawa (write out your strategy)
>B. "I'd win"
>C. "How do you think I should do it, Coach?"
>D."Hitoshi, how would you do it?"

>"If I can bait him into going for that slip, I might be able to charge forward and catch him before he can mount an offense. After that it's just a matter of laying into him until he's down for sure."
>"As for how I'd get him to take that bait...I could just piss him off. I bet sneaking in a few jabs and dancing out of the way would be enough to make him charge in."
Not a super high level strategy, but not a bad one either. I think this is something that also plays into our strengths somewhat.

"I'd win," you bluntly say. Coach lets out a mild huff, confirming that what you said was very funny.

"Alright, so he's a hard hitter, and a reckless one at that. I'm willing to bet he'll try and settle things with a big shot up close even if he has to eat a few shots to get there. If I can bait him into going for that slip, I might be able to charge forward and catch him before he can mount an offense. After that it's just a matter of laying into him until he's down for sure."

Coach nods. "Setting him up for a counter-punch, as his opponent in the video did a few times. It was effective, until his guard lapsed and Yasukawa was able to deliver a large hit."

"As for how I'd get him to take that bait..." you think carefully. "I could just piss him off. I bet sneaking in a few jabs and dancing out of the way would be enough to make him charge in."

"Yes, he should prove easy to coax into attacking, even if doing so would be to his disadvantage," Coach affirms. "For your part, you just have to be sure that you will absolutely hit him, that he won't see your attack coming and slip away from it."

Coach's feelings seem synonymous with yours - probably no use asking for his advice at this point. So, out of curiousity...
"Hitoshi, how would you handle a boxer like that?"

Hitoshi's eyes have glazed over since the technical part of this conversation began. "Uhh... I'd probably just hit him harder than he hits me. Who cares if I get hit, long as he goes down first?"

Coach chuckles. "Yes, that's an option as well. However, Karada-kun would not last to the later rounds if he went for exchanges. Yasukawa is undoubtedly a harder puncher, and we know hardly anything of his stamina."

"So the counter strategy is safer," you say. "But going for a few punches here and there would be good to bait him with," you add.

"Your preparation for this match will entail training your guard to withstand his approach, and strengthening your acuity in going for counter-punches," Coach says. "Secondary will be your combinations once you open up Yasukawa's defense. You've already demonstrated the ability to do this in your licensing exam," he notes, referring to your counter on Makunouchi. "Your mistake there was not having the ability to down him quickly, and not knowing when to back off once it proved fruitless to continue. If that were to occur again, it may mean a down for you here."

"It won't happen here," you assure Coach. He smiles slightly, giving you confidence. You can do this. You'll win.

>>5475155
>>D."Hitoshi, how would you do it?"
Once we get his answer:
>A. Tell Coach how you would deal with Yasukawa (write out your strategy)
>Fake a simple pattern of your own, and when you see him trying to slip in for a big hit, get him with whatever move he's most vulnerable to, preferably a longer-ranged hit to make sure that he can't get in for a big one. Slip up your fake pattern every once in a while on purpose to catch him off guard when he goes in, or switch patterns entirely.

I don't know if that's the most effective way to deal with him, but I DO know his weakness: He ALWAYS sticks to the pattern. Since he always sticks to the pattern, we can exploit that at his most vulnerable, which is when he goes in for a hit.

>>5475195

You have two weeks to traing for your bout with Yasukawa. It's not a lot of time, but you've already proven to yourself that you have the skills required to win this fight. It's just a matter of sharpening them now to give yourself a greater advantage.

While you have an assortment of things you'd like to train, the short time between now and the match means that in addition to your conditioning, you could probably only focus on getting the most out of either your defense, or your countering ability. You could try to train both in that time, but that could easily lead to you overexerting yourself...

>A. Focus on improving your guard and defensive maneuvering (DC 20)
>B. Focus on strengthening your ability to land counters (DC 35)
>C. No pain, no gain - train both defense and counters (DC 65)

This is your first match, you have to give it your all! There's no reason you can't train both if you put your mind to it!

...

At least, that's what you told yourself two weeks ago when you started. You attempted a rigorous training schedule to hone both your defense and counter acuity, but swapping back and forth so much and training for so long each day ended up doing more harm than good.

At the advice of Coach Hirano, you ended up having to take the last few days off to recover from the strain of your attempted training. You ended up not having any significant progress with either of the things you wanted to train, but on the positive side, you at least didn't injure yourself too badly, and you're able to more or less recover by the day of the weigh-in.

You open the door to the weigh-in room at Korakuen, accompanied by your coach. Inside is your opponent, Kazuhito Yasukawa, wearing the same grin he was in the video.

Tomorrow, your debut match against him will take place.

>End

Thanks for hanging out anons, apologies that I got pulled away midway through. Holidays are rough

"Look at that, he actually showed up," he says aloud with a smarmy tone. "We heard your conditioning went shitty, so we weren't sure if you were gonna show! Figured you might want to forfeit before you get hurt tomorrow."

"It's my debut, I'd never skip out," you flatly tell him. "Let's have a good fight tomorrow," you add, mustering a smirk to match the condescending energy of his own grin.
In your head, you want to say something more to bait him, but you hold your tongue and play it cool for now. Yasukawa huffs and heads for the scale. Next time, you think.

Your opponent weighs in, and the judge quickly approves Yasukawa as making the cut for Featherweight. He steps off and grabs his shirt, still smiling all cocky at you as if the weigh-in were a competition. You follow suit, a bolt of anxiety involuntarily running through you as you remember your botched conditioning...

"Kogeki... 125.8 pounds! Clear!"

You exhale in relief. After you step off the scale, Yasukawa steps over to you, getting in your face just a little bit. He offers you a handshake.

Accepting Yasukawa's invitation, you take his hand, and the reporters take the opportunity to photograph your exchange.

Of course, you also have take this as a moment to establish your dominance over him. You squeeze his hand as hard as you can, to which his grin relents slightly. He tries to squeeze harder, but your grip overpowers his, and you hold for a few seconds before he yanks his hand away.

Yasukawa scoffs and grabs his things to leave. You do the same, exiting Korakuen with Coach after giving some comments to reporters, and head off to get some lunch somewhere. Coach would ask what you feel like eating, but he already knows the answer.

"He reminds me of Hitoshi," you joke. "But he seems cocky to a fault. I think I'll be able to take advantage of that during the match," you say with your own smug grin.

"I agree, but remember not to underestimate your opponent," Coach advises.

You nod. "I can't let my guard down."

You continue to chat with Coach as you go to get food, and the day passes, as does the next morning, almost too slowly.

Finally, it's here: the day of your match.

You arrived at Korakuen around sunset, and spent some time strolling around. There's a few other matches going on tonight, but none that you really care to watch; yours is second to last. Whatever confidence you have, this is still your first time going up in the pro ring, and you can't shake the stage fright.

Eventually, it gets late enough that you head to your dressing room to change and get warmed up. Coach is waiting for you, and though he said Hitoshi would be here, he doesn't seem to be in the room himself.

"I sent Hitoshi to the stands to observe some matches before your own," Coach states before you even ask. "If he gets anything out of spectating, it will be worthwhile. He'll come down ringside to assist me as a second once it's time for your match."

You quickly get changed and begin warming up for your bout. As you talk with Coach about strategy, there's a knock at the door to your dressing room. You weren't expecting any visitors...

"What, no flowers?" you joke, to which Makunouchi lets out an awkward chuckle. "Thanks, Makunouchi. But you sure you're not just here to research my style? When's your debut again?"
He jumps back and starts stammering. "W-What? N-No, I would never-"

Makunouchi calms down from your taunting after a second. "Truthfully, I'm also here to see the match after yours," he admits a little sheepishly.
You raise an eyebrow; who's boxing after you?

"Makunouchi-kun must be referring to the match with Ichiro Miyata," Coach suggests. "If I recall, you were both members of the Kamogawa Gym for a brief time, until he suddenly left. This is his debut match as well, is it not?"

Makunouchi nods. "Yes, sir. And uh, well... we're hoping to fight at the East Japan Rookie Kings, if I'm good enough to make it there..."

Is he... blushing?

"Miyata-kun is also a featherweight, and a strong contender for the Rookie Kings title at that," Coach tells you informatively. "It would do you well to observe his match tonight."

"I'm shooting for the Rookie Kings too you know," you tell Makunouchi.
He blinks. "O-Oh, right. Then... I hope we get to fight there too!"
You nod approvingly. "Keep fighting and you'll get there. We'll have a proper match in the finals... and we'll finally get that ramen."

Makunouchi is visibly confused, but doesn't call attention to your noodle fetish.
"R-Right... I'll be in the stands then. Good luck again!" He gives you a bow and starts off.
"I'll be up there to watch the next match once I win!" you shout down the hall.

"Ho ho," Coach chuckles as you close the door. "With so many high-level fighters debuting, the Rookie Kings this year should be quite interesting. Performing well tonight will be your first step toward that place."

Your drive to win reignited and mind cleared, you spend the next twenty or so minutes warming up, which is interrupted by one of the officiators letting you know you're up soon.

It's time.

You head out the door with Coach, and find Hitoshi walking up from the ringside door, wearing the shirt Coach gave him.
"Hitoshi-kun. How were the matches?" Coach asks him rather bluntly.
He makes a low 'meh' sound. "I dunno. They weren't that good. Wish they hit each other more."
Coach groans a mildly disapproving grunt. "At least try to observe Karada-kun's match carefully."

"I'll show you a great match," you confidently tell Hitoshi. He looks back a little vacantly, and follows you and Coach, taking a bucket of ice with him.

You emerge from the hallway into the stadium. The stands are so dark you can hardly see anything, but the ring is lit up magnificently by a barrage of floodlights, dazzling you completely. It takes a light push from Coach to keep you from stopping in your tracks entirely, but you slowly make your way up the steps to the ring.

Yasukawa is there in the other corner - his expression hasn't changed. He thinks this is going to be an easy win.

You're going to smash that smug look off his face.

"Ladies and gentlemen! We will shortly begin the next match! Featherweight class, 4 rounds!" The referee's mic echoes throughout the arena, announcing the details of the match. You can hardly focus on it.

"In the red corner..." he signals to the opposite side of the ring. "From the Wakabayashi Gym, weighing 125.4 pounds... Yasukawa Kazuhitooooo!"

Yasukawa raises am arm in the air, and his ever-smug grin tightens to the mild applause.

"In the blue corner..." you shift forward slightly.
"Debuting tonight, from the Hirano Gym, weighing 125.8 pounds... Kogekiiii Karadaaaaaa!"

This is the moment you've been waiting your entire boxing career for.

You take a deep breath, and with a dramatic arc, pump one fist in the air, and move with an exaggerated swing into an outstretched combat stance that suits a martial artist more than it does a boxer. You finish it off with a huge shout.

Not only does your posing look super cool, it's also all part of your calculated plan to gain the mental edge over Yasukawa early on. It's genius!

...

The entire crowd is silent. The ref looks at you like you're crazy. Yasukawa looks baffled.

You look over to your corner for approval.
Hitoshi stares at you, and gives you a muffled 'what the fuck was that' gesture. Coach is pretending to look busy by divvying up the ice and supplies, and avoids eye contact at all costs.

You awkwardly look down at the canvas. Even Coach won't help you out here...

The ref calls you both over to the middle of the ring. "Let's keep this a clean fight. I'll be watching for illegal moves, such as headbutts and low blows..."

Honestly, you don't even pay much attention to the ref. You're too fixated on the opponent right in front of you, who won't stop glaring at you with that stupid grin.

After a minute, you head back to your corner. It's almost time for the bell.

"Remember your strategy," Coach reassures you. "Guard until he gets reckless, counter, then follow up with combinations."

You nod affirmatively, and Coach steps out of the ring. It's all you now.

A tense few seconds pass. Finally, you hear the sharp gong of the bell echo across the arena.

You turn around and put up your guard. Time to go.

You and Yasukawa slowly approach each other in the center ring, both trying to find your rhythm early. Taking pace isn't the most important thing to you right now, considering your gameplan, so it's okay to let him come at you first.

However, the first move Yasukawa makes isn't what you expect. He stops moving almost entirely, and puts a fist out toward you. Is he trying to touch gloves before you really get started?

You aren't taking that bait. You're sticking to the plan - pure defense.

Declining his invitation, you buckle down and put up a tight guard near the center, covering your vitals and much of your face. Yasukawa looks disappointed.

You hear the crowd jeering. "Boo! What a crappy sport!" "Show some respect, newbie!"
Attempting to put it out of your mind, you focus only on Yasukawa, who's dropped his glove and decided to come to you, putting up his own guard, though it's quite loose compared to your own.
He absolutely intends on going on the offensive from the outset. Fortunately, that's what you intend for him to do.

Moments later, Yasukawa is in your face, swinging back and forth with that stupid grin. Your hair stands on end once he gets within swinging range...

As soon as you're in range, Yasukawa goes on the offensive, raining down a barrage of jabs against your arms.

You keep your guard up, but keep yourself limber to dodge some of Yasukawa's hits as his offensive begins. Once you're able to read his patterns a little better, you can dodge quite a number of them, and his jabs aren't super hard, so you're no worse for wear in the short time blocking and dodging.
The plan's already in motion, you just need to wait for him to make a move.

You keep up your defense for as long as possible, and watch the frustration build on Yasukawa's face. Eventually, he reels his arm back and tries to go for a big hook, which you easily parry and hit his face with a jab after, which pisses him off more.

Gritting his teeth, Yasukawa redoubles his offensive efforts, but his swings are getting increasingly erratic. They're hitting harder, sure, but not hard enough to break your guard.

This is it - time to prepare yourself for a counteroffensive.

Hm. I wonder if we could bait Yasukawa to charge in, so that we could counter the charge with a body blow
Also we have GOT to take Hitoshi to see a high-level title match, in person. Expecting someone not familiar with boxing to get excited about a low level is a fool's errand. At least, I would assume the matches before ours were 4-rounder matches.

Obviously Takamura, but that goes without saying. Him and that Mexican bloke. Next up I'd honestly say that black guy who was one of Ippos first fights, he's strong, skilled and very levelheaded and calm i;e very resistant to mind games. Either way it'll be an interesting fight when it comes to it, and everyone else is kinda beyond us at this point, except maybe Ippo for now.
>>
>>5478227
Ozma got done dirty by Morikawa, dude deserved better than retiring from spine damage
>>
>>5478224
>who would be Karada's worst matchup at our current level?
Hayami or Kobashi would probably be the most difficult walls to climb. Neither of them really have any stylistic hard counters, so there's really no obvious way to take either of them on.
With Hayami in particular, he's also a very well rounded boxer at a higher level fundamentally with a similar, if lesser, penchant for mind games. We'd really have to think outside the box to get the upper hand on him, assuming we survive long enough to do so.
As for Kobashi, we don't really have any tools to crack his defense, nor does he seem the type to fall for any provocation. I can totally see him dragging us into a 4 round slog where he wins via decision.
>>
>>5478320
Yeah that sucks, waste of a good character. I could totally see him becoming a part of the regular cast, he would fit in with ease. Plus all the potential fish out of water gags you could do with him. If he does show up in this quest hopefully you do a little more with him, personally I think that would be fun.

>>
man, Volg, Sendo and Mashiba are gonna be fucking menaces if we end up boxing them, Ippo we could take down this early but the rest? Whoo boy we need some hard training and maybe that special something to really take them on.
>>
>>5478863
That's the thing, beyond the mind games, Karada doesn't seem to have a "focus". Having good fundamentals is a must, but at the higher levels, you need something of a signature move to really build off of. What that will be for Karada, I don't know.
>>
>>5479053
Counter seems the obvious pick. Work the enemy up throughout the match, get under his skin, and when he makes a mistake and over commits to a wide, heavy, slow haymaker, BOOM counter hook right on the chin. High risk, high reward.
>>
>>5479087
I would say that puts us at risk of becoming a bargain bin Miyats, but that comparison does bring up some interesting thoughts in itself.
With Miyata, he relies on his ring IQ, visual acuity, and sharp reflexes to land his counters. Obviously we're not at Miyata's level in those things, so we're probably gonna have to approach counter punching differently.
I say we leverage what we do have in service to landing counters instead. That raises the question, what DOES Karada have?
In terms of physical ability, Karada isn't lacking or exceptional in any respect, but he does have good composure and quick wits, not to mention his self professed penchant for mind games.
I think if we wanted to be a counter puncher, we'd be better served by luring our opponents into creating predictable openings for us to exploit. It's a little more cerebral than most strategies, but I think it would be effective nonetheless.
>>
>>5479231
So we'd be a cruder but physically stronger Miyata then? Because Miyata's punches aren't that strong without his counters really.
>>
>>5479243
Quite the opposite actually. Miyata is more of an instinctual counter puncher who can capitalize on openings thanks to his physical gifts.
Karada in this hypothetical would rely more on manufacturing those openings and timing his punches right rather than waiting for them to appear and snatching them up like a hawk.
>>
>>5479280
We could also add feints and maybe an onehanded defense to stop cross counters
>>
>>5479293
Given how feints in combinations seem to be exceedingly rare in this instance, learning how to utilize them at a high level isn't a bad idea either.
>>
I feel that as a longer term goal Karada could learn to fight southpaw. Doesn't have to be a permanent shift or anything, I'm aiming for being comfortable and effective with it. It'd add to the mind games we could throw out and would serve to mitigate other southpaw fighter's advantage.

The talk of signature moves got me searching for ideas and I came on the follwowing:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2AnWJAz_-9k
This would up Karada's general defensive skills and help setup his own counters.I have no idea how factual or correct the breakdown in the video is as i have no actual boxing knowledge myself
>>
>>5479305

Uuuh I guess we could strengthen Karada's left arm for better southpaw punches?

Ouch, my lack of boxing knowledge immediately smacked me in the face huh.
>>
>>5479305
Also not a bad idea.

To further play with the mindgames, we could create several combinations that start out the same but eventually differentiate and even add in a fake tell for whether or not a move is a feint
>>
>>5479322
Don't worry about, I'll give you the broadstrokes.
Mayweather is a notorious prick and a boring fighter to watch. He also has a 50-0 record, so you have to bedgrudgingly respect his prowess as a boxer.
However, as I said, his fights are snooze-fests owing to his bizarrely effective defensive style. His playboy nonsense outside of the ring and overtly business oriented mindset do nothing to help him attract fans either.
TLDR; He's a phenomenal boxer, but an incredibly boring one to watch on top of being very unlikeable.

You lay into Yasukawa's head with a flurry of lefts, and follow up with a big swing of your right, rocking his upper body sideways with the force of your punch.

It's still early in the match, so he's not likely to go down yet. But man, wouldn't a first-round victory at your debut just be so sweet?

Piling on the pressure, you bash your way through Yasukawa's attempts to get out of your punching range, hitting his gut over and over.

He eventually pulls away and is able to guard against your blows. You're a little tired after that chase, but Yasukawa is much worse off than you.
All the body blows must have sapped the strength in his legs, so if you continue to pursue him, his guard should eventually break again.
The pressure may also cause him to attack you more recklessly.

You aren't sure how much time there is left in the round, but it must be more than halfway over, at least.

Much as you'd like to continue your pressure, you learned how poorly that overcommitting can go with your spar against Makunouchi.

Fighting back the urge to dive in again, you simply stand firm and maintain your guard... but you add a little smile.

Yasukawa's eyes go wide, and his brow tightens. Looks like you really pissed him off.

He charges right in with his guard up, swinging with a wide punch that you easily dodge.
You can hear Yasukawa's coach shouting at him to stop, but he doesn't seem to be listening.

You know exactly what's going to come next. It's what you've been planning for this entire time.

Loosening your guard a little, you dodge Yasukawa's wide punches, just to frustrate him a little more before the inevitable happens - you pretend to throw a jab, which he instinctively ducks under, going for your body.

That's when his head goes flying toward the rafters from your right uppercut, his bloody mouthpiece shooting out across the canvas.

He hits the mat with a dull thud, and the referee steps between the two of you.
"To your neutral corner!" he commands, which you turn to do as the count begins.

"1... 2... 3..."

The count feels like it goes on forever, as Yasukawa attempts to stand from your blow...

"5... 6... 7..."

He slowly gets back on his knees, lifting himself up, but it's proving difficult.

"8... 9..."

His gloves slowly rise toward his chest...

"...10!"

The bell rings, and Yasukawa slumps forward, completely exhausted. The crowd erupts in cheers!

"That's a knockout! The winner of this match is Kogeki Karada!"

You're stunned for just a moment, but then it hits you.

You won your first pro match. You really did it.

Without even thinking about it, you raise your arms in a victory pose, and the crowd erupts in applause.

Coach works his way past the ropes, Hitoshi following him. He pats you on the back. "Well done, Karada-kun. That was a splendid match, and a strong debut."

"You barely got hit," Hitoshi adds. "I don't know much about boxing, but even I know that's pretty damn good."

You also notice Yasukawa's coach has entered the ring, tending to his boxer along with his seconds.

He laughs a bit.
"Let's get that victory ramen once we leave," you add.
"Ho ho, you still have that one-track mind," he says.

You look back over at Yasukawa and his crew, who are about to exit the ring. Before they can, you hurry over.

"Yasukawa!" you shout. He turns around with a brooding look.
"Thanks for the match," you say, with a lengthy bow. The audience gives you another short applause at this gesture.

He just scoffs and leaves. Seems like he's a sore loser.

"What a good sport!" The reporter says. "I hear Yasukawa was planning on entering the East Japan Rookie Kings tournament this year. After that performance, I assume you also plan on entering?"

"That's right," you confidently affirm. "Anyone headed for the Rookie Kings better watch out!"

"Well, good luck to you, Kogeki-san!" the reporter cheerfully encourages before heading off.

"Karada-kun," Coach says, "You should go change quickly, if you want to be up in the stands for the next match.

Oh yeah, that Miyata guy. You almost forgot you were gonna watch it with Makunouchi. Acknowledging Coach, you head back toward the entrance, the audience cheering one last time as you exit the arena.

>>
Hey QM, do we have a character sheet or anything?
Like, do we get "counter XP" from this match?
>>
>>5479853
None established so far, partly out of me thinking I don't really want to have real math stats for this game, if that makes sense
I'd rather just have it all be narratively determined what works and what doesn't

That said, you can't do as much with boxing as you would with like, a DBZ game or fantasy/DnDesque swordfighting game, so I hope that holds up
>>
>>5479857
Yeah, the show has really shown that boxers have like, a few matches a year because you gotta rest up after a match so you don't risk injury, so those who have more then like 4 matches a year are either super strong or suicidal, like Ricardo martinez or that thai dude, Scratch J was it?

Ay DG, when you get a chance, can you give me some stats to input here? Numbers are 1-5 (or higher for freaks of nature)
>>
>>5481477
Oh yeah this fucking thing, remember to be a very good jack of all trades or be super specialized in at least two aspects so you don't fall off the hurdle.
>>
>>5481477
In my opinion, based on our showings so far:

Technique 3 - Given our versatility at most ranges, and training things like fighting southpaw
Speed 3 - Not the fastest guy, relatively untested, but enough to keep up with the most boxers. Once we start fighting real speedsters like Saeki, we'll have more trouble
Experience 1 - Only one match so far
Intelligence 3 - Good instincts and understanding of strategy on a basic level, still needs time to really cultivate a strong boxing IQ. Will easily advance to 4 in the future, maybe a 5 later on?
Stamina ? - Hasn't really been tested yet
Power 2 - Karada is not a strong puncher, and has to rely on hard reads and clever fighting to win

Feel free to give your own thoughts here, anons
Also, now that I'm thinking about how Karada's characterization has gone, would he really be one to foul in the ring as he was initially described to be? He seems like the sporting type
>>
>>5481814
>would he really be one to foul in the ring as he was initially described to be? He seems like the sporting type
Yes, but only in reaction/retribution to dirty moves
>>
>>5481814
>>5481848
Hm, yeah he seems like the guy who would fight fire with fire, so if we fight Mashiba? Whoo boy that's gonna end in a fucking bloodbath.
>>
>>5481814
I'd be fine with retconning that aspect, so far we've been more than fair and sporting.
>>
>>5481814
So far he's been more cheeky than dirty, so I'm alright with the retcon
>>
>>5481814
>would he really be one to foul in the ring as he was initially described to be?
If we're pushed to that point, I could totally see it.
Winning proper is cool and all, and we should strive for that, but if it's a choice between defeat or doing some dirty shit, Karada's opponents better watch out for those elbows.
>>
had to restart my router so there went my IP I think, ugh
>>5481848
>>5481879
I'm with these anons honestly, if Karada is meant to be a reformed punk or thug throwing fouls whenever he pleases would be counteractive to he 'reformed' part of characterization.
Personally I'd prefer not to foul at all but I think I'd be outvoted in that regard.
>>
>>5482060
>Personally I'd prefer not to foul at all but I think I'd be outvoted in that regard.
Me too, since I wanted to touch gloves. But it probably helped with the mind games in the end.
>>
I like the idea of Karada being a approachable nice guy outside the ring but if you're his opponent leading up to the match then he's gonna be an asshole and do mind games, but once the match is over he reverts back to being a nice guy.
>>
>>5481814
Thanks for the information boss, I'll try and finish the shindan when I get home.
I'll also include some other things that are probably gonna be left blank for now.
Stuff like preferred stance, sunday punch, etc.
>>
>>5481814
I think that dirty moves have a time and place in the ring - maybe not stepping on one's foot, but barging into a guy with the shoulders when infighting, for example, or using your head to shove a guy around when infighting.
>>
>>5482133
What about forcibly shoving a guys hands out of the way when he's guarding?
Or covering their eyes with your glove as you come out of a clinch to land a cheap shot?
>>
Yeah prolly some cheat shit would work for our illegal moves because I don't see Karada doing a rabbit punch.
>>
>>5482229
Agreed. We're here to win fights, not hand out free brain damage.
>>
>>5482229
Nothing that's blatantly cheating, but would certainly get us a warning from the ref and subsequent point deductions if we kept at it.

>>5482206
Hand trapping is so common nowadays I didn't even think it was fouling. You could see it all over the place with Fury vs. Wilder.

>>
>>5481814
In all honesty I like your and all the anons assessments. Accurate. I still say Volg is our worst matchup because essentially we're just a shittier version of him. But our stamina is our untested patch, plus we really don't know the difference between our hand speed and foot speed. If we can really maximize the step in and step out, it might give us the edge we need. Especially for counters. But we better get a good pair of runners. Roadwork is in our future.
>>
>>5482566
Agreed. Anyone who puts out insane pressure and doesn't let Karada think or take the pace will be difficult
>>
>>5482589
That's why it's super important to come in with an existing gameplan and warm up properly before each match.
We did just fine in regards to the former, but kinda botched the latter. Getting injured right before the match is never a good thing, so let's try to avoid it in the future.
>>
So on the topic of our dark backstory, I thought up a little something I think would fit. It's not that we were a delinquent or a thug, but rather we were a cocky street scam artist who got into trouble after pulling a scam on a guy who turned out to be yakuza and was rather upset about being pulled onto the ruse cruise. Coach was one of the people we ripped off a while back and was the only one we could think of to call when the yakuza started demanding money, and he saved our ass somehow on the condition that we join the gym, and we figured that we should learn to fight anyway so we're not so helpless next time one of our marks gets angry, and the rest is history.

It explains the penchant for mind games and trickery, our history with coach and our reason for getting into boxing in the first place. Thoughts? And feel free to come up with your own if you can think of a better one.

With little time to dwell on your first pro victory, you run back to the changing room and grab your street clothes, throwing them on before charging into the stands. You didn't take much damage in your match, and your body's still riding the adrenaline high, so moving quickly is not difficult for you at all right now.

Once you get up into the stands, the next match is already about to begin. Two boxers are in the middle with the ref - you assume one of them is Miyata, but you're not sure which one.

"Hey!" You hear from your right; you turn to see Makunouchi waving from a seat about halfway up. You push your way past the people sitting and grab a seat next to his.

"Your match was great!" he congratulates you enthusiastically. "A first-round knockout for your debut is incredible!"

"Thanks," you simply say back. "You'll finish your debut with one round too, right?"
"Uh, well I'm not sure about that..." Makunouchi says with a mildly flustered tone.

"Which one of these guys is Miyata, anyway?" you say, looking toward the ring.
"The one on the left," Makunouchi affirms, pointing to him.

That's Ichiro Miyata, huh? Looks like a pretty average guy, but his expression's pretty intense.

"What kind of boxer is he?" you ask.
"A counter-puncher," Makunouchi explains. "Not like your everyday counter-puncher, though. His entire strategy revolves around getting a solid counter on his opponent. And believe me, it hurts."
Does he have first-hand experience?

Before you can ask for more info, the bell rings, and the boxers come out of their corners. Miyata plays defensively, baiting his opponent into making the opening moves, which he dodges and blocks, seeming to analyze them.
It occurs to you that his strategy is a lot like the one you used against Yasukawa.

However, the difference between your talents and his are made apparent when Miyata lunges for a counter-punch against his opponent's ordinary jabs. One after the other, he's able to predict his opponent's movements in a way much faster than your own.
Where you had to bait Yasukawa into making a huge swing to counter him, Miyata does it with ease against seemingly normal punches.

Miyata's opponent quickly tires out from the constant offensive that chips him down. Without even being given the opportunity for a huge punch, he simply drops after suffering nearly a dozen blows to the head, and the ref starts counting.

You briefly glance over at Makunouchi, who's watching with his mouth agape.
"He's even better than I remember..." he remarks under his breath.

"Have you two fought before?" you ask him.
He seems to snap out of his trance momentarily. "Y-Yeah, way back when I first joined the gym, we had two spars. We both won once, so next time we fight..."

Makunouchi is interrupted by the ref signaling the fight to continue, as Miyata's opponent stood back up. So you must be a harder puncher than him at least, since you made Yasukawa stay down...

The match only lasts a bit longer, as the story of the first half repeats - Miyata slips gracefully around his opponent's punches, nails him a few times in the head, and he goes down once more.
The bell rings several times, and the match ends on the second down, with Miyata winning by TKO.

"Amazing! He made it looks so easy!" Makunouchi exclaims, blushing a bit.
You briefly consider mentioning how much Makunouchi seems to like Miyata, but then realize this must be what it's like when you talk about eating ramen, and decide to hold back.

With the last match over, you stand up and prepare to head out.
"Oh, are you leaving?" Makunouchi asks. "Well, I'll see you again sometime soon, hopefully. Congratulations on your match again!"

You nod and wave as you head off. The time sitting down let you finally cool off a little bit, and now you can really think about the match you just had.
Botched training aside, the actual match went pretty much perfectly, owing to you sticking to your guns with the counter strategy. Yasukawa was pretty predictable, which made him an easy opponent. But not every opponent will be that simple, right?
You wonder what would happen if you had to fight an opponent that was more difficult to bait... how would you deal with them?
You also can't help thinking about your own strategies compared to other boxers. You aren't as hard a puncher as Makunouchi, nor do you have the dexterity to pull off counters like Miyata. How would you fight against them, if you had the chance to?

A part of you wonders if you'd have to fight dirty... but that would be betraying Coach. You surely couldn't do that in the pro ring...

"I'm perfectly fine," you say. "Just doing some thinking. Where's Hitoshi?"

"He went home once your match concluded," he said. "So he did not watch Miyata-kun's fight."
He definitely missed out, then.

"That Miyata is really good at counters," you mention.
Coach nods. "You noticed how he employs the same strategy you used against Yasukawa, I assume?"
"Yeah, but he does it way better," you admit.

"So you see the difference in your skill level," Coach says. "Miyata-kun is someone who has weak punching power, but makes up for it by devoting himself entirely to landing powerful counters. You could say the counter-punch is his entire style, as he will surely use his counters regardless of his opponent or their awareness of it."

That makes sense. He's clearly very practiced in that regard.

"In that sense, Karada-kun, although you're also not a very hard puncher, you're nearly opposites in the way you approach fights. You focus on versatility and being able to handle any situation by polishing your fundamental moves and carefully preparing your strategy. Miyata-kun has only one strategy, and simply performs at a high enough level that it doesn't matter.

Which do you think is the better way to fight, Karada-kun? Your way, or his?"

>E. It also depends on the opponent
Specialization and generalization are styles which suit different sorts of fighters, dependent on psychology and physical build. Karada thinks like and has the physical traits of a generalist, so of course it suits him to train that way.

Whether it's better or worse to be one way or another is ultimately fight-dependent. Styles make fights, and both specialists and generalists will suffer against opponents of different kinds. A specialist will suffer if they fight a counter-specialist; a generalist will suffer if they face a specialist whose strategy they simply lack the tools to overcome, but can beat most anyone else.

Specializing in something is by no means a bad thing, but you have to be able to adapt once you get past a certain level.

"Being versatile for sure," you say without hesitation. "But I think it also depends on yourself and the opponent."

"Of course," Coach agrees. "Your intrinsic skills and instincts determine whether one way or the other works best for you. In your case, your instincts err toward cerebral and you enjoy strategy, so a style that focuses on exploiting your opponent's weakness suits you. Miyata may be more straightforward in his methods, but that likely reflects his own personality."

"The important thing," Coach emphasizes as you exit Korakuen, "is to play to your own strengths, and train to further them. You have done an exemplary job of this in your first bout," he says, patting you on the back.

You smile at Coach's praise. Yeah, you know you did great tonight.

"Now, I know what you're going to say next, so I'll simply say yes, we will go get some ramen to celebrate," Coach says with a gentle smile. "I even know this great place we can stop by that I've been meaning to try."
"Yeah, ramen! What place is it?" you ask excitedly.
"A place that's been around for a while with quite the local following. I believe it's called Chuuba Soba."

You stop in your tracks, sweating. Coach looks at you with confusion.

"Well, to be honest Coach..."

It isn't easy to tell the truth, even if it wasn't really your fault what happened to Aoki's shop, but if there's Karada Kogeki can't do, it's lie to the Coach.

Fortunately, he's understanding, and you head off to a different shop to celebrate. Seems he's well aware of the indiscriminate whirlwind of violence that is Takamura.

After a filling bowl from one of your local places, you head home for the night, and settle into bed, still feeling the high of your first win.
Hopefully your second one comes soon.

We back

>>5485043

Four months have passed since your first match, much of which has been spent with the Coach focused on whipping Hitoshi into a proper boxer. After your debut match, the delinquent seems to have found a spark that's gotten him excited to train for real, and Coach seized that momentum to beat the fundamentals into his brain and muscles, with you encouraging him and helping him practice.

After the long stretch of work he's done, Hitoshi's beginning to turn into a rather hard-punching infighter. Stacking the foundations of boxing atop Hitoshi's natural brawling instincts seem to have paid off for the Coach. He's still got some time to go before he's ready to debut, but he's for sure getting there, with the Coach's help and your own.

One morning, you find yourself in the Coach's office, waiting for him to finish up his opening routines before you begin your warm-up regimen. A stack of VHS tapes are on the coffee table, and one plays in the VCR opposite of the couch. This would be where Coach and his boxers would view the tapes of another boxer, to study the opponent they would be preparing to fight.

Right now, you're watching a recording of Makunouchi's debut match against Yusuke Oda, which Makunouchi won by KO in the third round. It's astonishing how different your styles are - his victory was won by punches much harder than you're capable of making, and simply pushing into Oda until he couldn't stand up anymore. Makunouchi's defense, though... that could use a lot of improvement. Hopefully it'll still be pretty weak by the time you meet him in the ring...

As the recorded match wraps up, you notice Coach has been on the phone for a few minutes.
"I see... yes, we'll expect you soon then." Wonder who he's talking to?

Once he hangs up the phone, he looks over at you. "Karada-kun. We're going to have to postpone your training today. Officer Sakae is coming around today to check on Hitoshi's progress, to make sure he's taking his agreement seriously."

"I wonder if she's going to be polite this time," you mutter.
Coach chuckles. "Just be polite, Karada-kun. You wouldn't want to get on her bad side, would you?"

Gotta put that plan to ask for her number on the shelf then. "So how does that affect me?"

"Today, Hitoshi will be sparring for Officer Sakae to demonstrate how far he's come in his training since joining us," Coach says. "However, I've been asked to ensure that his sparring partner is someone other than you."

"Not me?" you ask, a little taken aback. "Why's that?"

"To make sure you aren't holding back on him or making him look better than he is," he says plainly. "Officer Sakae would like to see Hitoshi spar in a more neutral ground, so she's asked us to take him to another gym."

That makes sense, you suppose. "But then how does this involve me?"

"It would be hard for me to quickly secure a sparring partner for a pre-debut rookie like Hitoshi alone," Coach suggests. "But if I send you with him, given your performance in your own debut, it's likely they would be more receptive to a sparring offer. And you could certainly use the experience of sparring with another pro, as well."

Nice! You're not just babysitting today!
"So what gym do you have in mind?" you ask Coach.

"I'm not sure yet," Coach admits. "This was a rather last-minute agreement, so I've yet to call any gyms. I suppose I should ask you, Karada-kun, if you have any potential sparring partners in mind?"

You mentally recount the significant featherweight boxers you've heard of recently. There's Makunouchi, of course, and Miyata, Mashiba... uhhh... who else...?

"Can you get a hold of Miyata's gym?" you ask Coach.

"Oh ho," he says with a bit of surprise. "That would be an interesting spar. Very well, I'll contact the Karahawa Gym and see if they'll take a spar today."

Leaving Coach to it, you head back to the floor to get a little bit of work in before Hitoshi and Officer Sakae get here.

Hitoshi gets here first, at his usual time. You quickly fill him in on what's to come today.

"Huh, a spar at that Miyata guy's gym? About time I get to beat some real ass," he says with a grin.

Well, we're not a counter-puncher, we're jack of all trade.
What's the counter to counter-puncher anons? Hit and Run?
>>
>>5489598
Traditionally, the best option is trying to fight from the inside using the clinch liberally. Add a little bit of dirty boxing, and the main strengths of a counterpuncher are eliminated. Unfortunately, Karada is neither especially strong nor does he have the kind of power hooks/uppercuts one would hope to use the clinch to set up.

Tbqh Karada isn't especially vulnerable to counterpunching. He's a smart fighter, isn't overly aggressive, and doesn't rely on any particular combinations which could be punished.
>>
>>5489609
we could also feint and try to draw out his counter to counter it, although Miyata is likely to have more ring IQ than us. I think the infighting idea is best. Shell up with a cross-armed defense and either take the fight to phone booth distances or push him against a ring side.

Going by the setting's take on boxing, it's kamikaze style fighters who go for hard punches at close range.
I use that term specifically because...well...pic related.
You ever think about how Ippo was taught a suicidal style by a former kamikaze pilot? I think about that a lot.

In regards to the upcoming spar with Miyata, I say we go in as a way of scouting him out rather than actually trying to beat him.
It isn't a real match after all, so it's not like we have to do anything besides not get our collective asses kicked.
The goal, in my mind, is to force him to give away information while not revealing much of anything ourselves. Throw stuff out, see what works, what doesn't work, etc...
If anything, this is will let us create our anti-Miyata strategy before we (probably) fight him in the Rookie Kings tournament.
All that said...I'm not opposed to giving him a few good shot to remember us by either. I just want anons to keep in mind how this spar could be very beneficial to us in the future before accidentally giving all our moves away for free.
>>
>>5489389
Sizing up the competition for Ippo's heart I see, though I feel it's a lost cause in either case, Ippo's heart is only for Miyata and Karada's for Ramen.
>>
>>5489848
That is a smart plan, it is only a spar so no need to go all out but Miyata might also think the same... However I think he might underestimate us due to us being at least outwardly more crude so he might not think we're scouting him out like that
>>
>>5489890
If he doesn't want to step on the gas, we're just gonna have to give him a little encouragement. He was already better than most rookies by the time Ippo met him, so I don't expect this spar to be a cakewalk even if we're just there for surveillance.

>>

Ippo's his friend, rival, fan, love interest?
>>
>>5490909
So, we can reduce he has something of a friendship or rivalry with Ippo.
Off the top of my head, we might be able to mention that in such a way to provoke a reaction.
We might also do a history check to see if the surname "Miyata" rings any bells. It wouldn't be outlandish for Karada to have heard of Miyata's father before, and thus be aware of what happened to him.
