The sun shines through the peaks of Mount Paozu, a bright and early August morning at the Son-Mahogany household. As the days and weeks turned into months since the tournament and Gohan’s return, it felt like a return to routine for many. However, big plans are on the horizon for the Tuffle Trio. Son Peppa plans to go over some details in regards to the dating game she has set up for Lime, Gohan heads over to Monster Island to spend time with 17, 18, Chuu Lee, Krillin, Tommy, Marron, and surprisingly Nappa, while Izzy and her gang are asked to help with some “community service.”

“Later mom, later dad, later sis, later Groucho! Be back by dinner!” you call out to your family.

“See you then Gohan!” dad shouts back, scratching the sabertooth behind the ear, with the big guy purring happily.

“Leyhtur Ghomharn!” Peppa responds through a mouthful or pancakes.

“Take care. Also here, a couple for the road for you two.” Mom telekinetically brings over a pancake for you and Buu each.

“Thank you!” the tiny Majin cheers, chowing down on it quickly.

You chow down as well and start to fly off with Buu, heading south towards Monster Island. Once you’re both done with the pancakes, the two of you race down there, with the island coming into view. You sense everyone gathered in one place, and head down there with Buu, waving to Lapis and Lazuli as they watch over Marron and Tommy. Nearby, Chuu Lee is sparring with Krillin and Nappa, while a few kaiju watch in the distance.

“Hi Gohan!” Marron calls to you, running towards you.

“Gohan!” Tommy follows after her, laughing happily.

“Hey guys.” You give the two high-fives. You notice they have little MIR sashes on their arms, matching the one Lapis has. Heh, adorable. “Keeping the big guys safe?” you ask, nodding at the kaiju nearby.

“Mostly just watchin’ as uncle Lapis keeps an eye on ‘em.” the blonde girl replies, with Lapis giving a quick wave as he sips a drink from a crazy straw.

“Mom’s been helping me sense energy better.” Tommy explains, his head turning towards the sparring match going on. “I think I’m getting the hang of it.”

“Nice.” You ruffle the pair’s hair gently, heading over to Lapis and Lazuli. “Sorry to crash what’s probably more of a family outing for you guys.”

“Eh, Nappa’s here too, and it’s not like we turned you down.” Lapis replies, stretching a bit. “Don’t sweat it.”

You look up again, noticing Nappa actually working decently well with Krillin, who brings out a turtle shell of Ki to block a knee strike from Chuu Lee. Nappa tries to fling up a pillar of Ki from underneath her, only for Chuu Lee to teleport away from it and behind Nappa, striking his side with a chop.

“So how have you been, Tommy? I can tell you’re picking up on Ki sensing pretty quick, but been up to anything else?”

“Mom and dad have been helping me get into proper schooling. It’s gonna be a while, they gotta go through home schooling before they can get me into a regular one, but I’ve been working hard for it.” he says with a bright smile.

“And to think Chuu Lee got all pouty when she was your age over completing basic education.” Lapis remarks with a smirk.

“Heard that!” she shouts at him, blocking a blow from both Krillin and Nappa with relative ease.

“I know, I said it out loud.” he teased back.

“Eh, I’d been catching up on schoolwork too.” you tell Tommy. “Could probably help you a bit some time if you’d like.”

His face lights up like a Christmas tree. “Wow, really? Thanks Gohan!”

“Though first, I’d like to go over some more of the basics of Ki sensing with you. That sound okay?” you ask both him and Lapis. He gives a thumb’s up, while Tommy nods emphatically. You sit down beside the boy, taking a meditative stance. He does the same, and you begin. “So, you can tell where Chuu Lee is, and the two she’s sparring against, right?”

“Uh-huh. Mostly.” Tommy confirms.

“They’re also using a lot more energy though, standing out like fireworks. Bright and loud. They’re pretty easy to focus on. How about…” You sense around, eyes closed, and smile. “That big guy over there isn’t moving around so much though. He’s resting right now, but his life energy is still pretty strong. Try to focus on the calmer feeling, like a campfire that’s a bit away rather than a firework.”

Tommy nods, and slowly but surely picks up on it. “Is it… that way?” he asks, pointing at the big dinosaur to the west of you all that’s resting with some smaller ones.

“Hey, got it on your first try! Nice job.” you praise him.

“Good job sport.” Lapis comes over and pats him on the head affectionately.

Buu walks around him curiously, and an idea pops up. “Okay, how about those close to you? Buu here’s a moving target, smaller, but also more active. Think of a torch in hand, close by, warmer, moving.”

Tommy tries it again, though he lets out a slight gasp of surprise. “That’s… a pretty big torch, Gohan! But… he seems so small…”

“Heh, yeah, Buu’s quite the powerhouse.” you tell him apologetically. Buu puffs his chest out proudly. “Still, looks like you’ve got the basics down really well.”

The boy smiles brightly, with Marron giggling, sitting down on her mom’s lap. “Auntie Chuu Lee says he picked up almost as quickly as she did.”

Ah, this is good. You look over at Lapis and then ask, “How about the monsters down here? They been behaving?”

“Yeah but we’ve had a couple run-ins with particularly sneaky poachers these last couple weeks. Nothing either of the Big G’s or myself couldn’t handle, but they are getting bolder.” He finishes his drink. “Or dumber. Probably that.”

“Definitely that.” Lazuli adds.

However, Buu approaches you and motions for you to lean down, and asks you an odd question… “Why his eyes don’t work?”

"I'm glad you asked Buu. There are a lot of reasons for visual impairment. It can be caused by malnutrition and disease, like cataracts or trachoma. People can become blind because of these diseases, or because of an accident, but sometimes people are just born that way. There are also different kinds of blindness. Some people are what's called 'legally blind' meaning their eyesight has low acuity and it's unable to be corrected by glasses or contact lenses. Some people are what's called 'color blind' meaning they can see but are unable to tell colors apart."


My older sister is blind so I actually knew a lot about this subject. Though wikipedia did help me phrase it all better.

Hoo boy. “Um… Tommy, do you want me to explain this?” you try to ask tactfully. “I mean, it’s okay if you don’t, or if you’d rather say it yourself, Buu just doesn’t really know much about stuff here on Earth and all…”

“Nah, it’s fine.” he replies with calm smile.

Okay. You can do this. You sit Buu down and start to explain as completely as you can. “I’m actually glad you asked, Buu. See, there are a number of causes for visual impairment, from malnutrition to disease to even accidental chemical or physical damage to them. Some people are also born that way, eyes having some problem in development or during the birthing process. There are different levels of blindness too, as while some have eyes that don’t function at all or even missing, others do have eyes that still technically function, but not at a level where they can clearly discern more than the most basic shapes and colors. That’s what counts as being ‘legally blind.’ Some also can discern shapes clearly but their eyes don’t discern certain wavelengths of light, so they end up what’s called ‘color blind.’ Still, people can live productive and healthy lives even with these varied types of blindness.”

Buu takes it all in slowly, nodding along. You’re not quite sure how much he’s actually processing, but it’s clear that he’s paying attention. And… perhaps a little too well, as he next nonchalantly and innocently asks Tommy, “What kind are you?”

You wince just a little at the sudden question, the air feeling awkward and stale for a moment, but thankfully that passes when Tommy giggles and answers the question, “Mom and dad said the doctors determined it was caused by chemicals in the air. Probably from where I used to live.”

“Bad air…” Buu concludes, nodding his head.

“Not bad, Gohan.” Lapis praises. “Been doing your research on the topic, huh?”

You rub the back of your neck bashfully. “I mean… not like it’s a bad thing, right?”

“Not at all. Glad to see it.” he replies calmly. “Besides, we’ve had a lot of productive appointments over this.”

You nod. “Plus he’s picked up on Ki sensing pretty well…” Then you telepathically ask, ‘Is that the only treatment they’ve really recommended, or is there anything else he’s got in store?’

‘Currently considering options. Like he said, it’s the result of chemical damage to the eyes, likely some reaction between sulfur dioxide and something else over a long period of time. Doc said it’s a surprise he didn’t suffer any other substantial tissue damage from where he used to live.’

You cross your arms, nodding solemnly. ‘Right, I recall a person who knew him from before saying something about a town abandoned by a coal mine fire.’

You clasp your hands together and think this over. “I mean… CAN you? That’d be really, really helpful and everything, but I don’t know if it’s really that simple to fix things he’s been dealing with it for that long. This wasn’t exactly something a Senzu could fix, after all.” You… don’t actually know that. Your eyes dart over towards Lapis, looking for confirmation.

“Yep.” he thankfully says.

Whew. “Besides, that’s something you should be asking himself and his parents. They’re the ones who are affected by this.”

Buu turns his head, looking up at Tommy. “Buu fix?”

He… smiles sadly. “That’s… a good thought, but I dunno if you can.”

“Buu can!” he declares proudly.

…An idea hits you. “Tell ya what, Buu, if you can talk with them, and maybe learn a bit on what he needs, you can go through with it.” You pat the Majin on the head. “Not saying this because I doubt you, but because I actually believe you.”

“You do?” he questions, pointing at himself.

“Yeah. If I’m right, this will be a bit like… a kind of training, almost. One you can eventually apply more broadly, and help lots of people.” you explain. “I bet you could help lots of people…” Aaaand to sweeten the deal, you lean in a bit. “Just like lil’ Rock Light.”

Buu’s positively beaming now. “Buu do that! Buu help!”

That gets everyone to chuckle a bit, Chuu Lee, Krillin, and Nappa finally taking a break from their sparring match to approach you all. “Glad to hear it, lil’ guy.” Lapis tosses them a few cans from a cooler, the trio enjoying some nicely chilled refreshments.

Looking down at his watch, Lapis gives a nod. “Gonna take a quick patrol, check up on things. Junior Rangers?”

“Yes sir!” Tommy and Marron both respond, standing at attention.

“Keep this area secure while I’m scouting, got it?”

“Yes sir!” the pair shout as they salute him.

With Lapis flying off, Buu approaches Chuu Lee and starts to talk with her. Tommy meanwhile smiles at you. “You really think he can do it?”

“Well, you sensed him just a bit ago. All that power he has isn’t just destructive, it’s also creative, and I bet it could be used to heal too. I mean, I’ve seen him turn rocks into candy before, the lil’ guy’s got talents like you’d never believe.”

“Wow, really?! That sounds so cool. He’s like… magic or something.”

You nod, crossing your arms again. “Oh you don’t know the half of it.” As you look up at the sky, you start to ponder. “…Say, Tommy, do you remember the name of the town you’re from? Maybe if Buu can help you, he can help others from there too. At least as a start.”

You take a moment to mentally go through the path you took back then, and then nod. “I think I’ll check the place out some time. Who knows, might even be able to find a way to put out that coal fire.”

“...Which you’ll do some research on, right?” Chuu Lee questions. “Not just blast the place to try to stop the fire.”

“I dunno, that sounds like it’d do the job.” Nappa interjects. “Heck, almost sounds fun.”

“No, no, she’s got a point. Coal fire, don’t know how deep it could go. I’ll do some research, promise.” you relent, your tail pulling out a Scouter mom gave you from your pocket. You place it on the side of your head and have it confirm where Merkez actually is, then look into some articles on it.

Sorry about the delay, been dealing with a major migraine for most of the day. Wife's been insisting I rest, and I've done so, but still want to get some game time in tonight. Think I've recovered from the worst of it now. Sorry if it's a bit short tonight, but we're back!

You tell everyone you’re gonna have a quick look around the island as you think some things over, and take off, trailing Lapis a bit. Okay, looks like the place is supposed to be abandoned. And shouldn’t brute force a problem… maybe Pantea could help a bit? Oh, oh, you should check with Trip for more information!

Spotting some large bovids grazing peacefully as you fly, you get in touch with her and explain what’s up. She’s intrigued, and takes a moment to go over things. ‘Merkez is nominally abandoned and set to let the fire burn out naturally, though as you heard before there are still a few living there. The primary issue with it is that the coal seams spread out quite substantially underground, and as the fire spreads through it it leaves hollowed out spaces that can only barely hold what weight rests on top of it, growing weaker and weaker as cracks form to release the smoke and gas trapped under there. A previous attempt was made to stop the fire… that did not go well.’

You get a mental image of… one giant flaming pit, like the gateway to an actual subterranean flaming hell. “Did not go well indeed.” you mumble aloud. “What happened there?”

‘Attempts at rapid cooling led to further fractures, causing a massive and growing sinkhole. It began about 40 meters wide and 12 meters deep, and currently has reached a size of 75 meters wide and 35 meters deep. Because of the dangers of the area, most animal life has avoided it, though some plants attempt to take advantage of the year-round warm soil. It should take about a century before the fire burns itself out at this rate.’

“Well, that’s tricky…” you think aloud, pondering on how to handle this. Sudden stops to it might just turn the place into one big sinkhole, more closely resembling a crater from one of the wastelands Earth’s seen as battlefields, or even a meteor impact. “So… would you suggest something like a slow, deliberate cleanup process?”

‘If you do intend to take on this task, I would recommend caution first and foremost. Some form of protection against the toxic fumes. Once you have that, you can try that plan. It might be helpful to, in some way, reinforce the ground that was damaged as well.’

“Okay, thanks Trip!” Now you’ve got the start of a plan. You check with Pantea on this idea next, and after explaining it…

“I was thinking there might be a way to use Magic to work with this. Ah, what I wouldn’t give for something like transmutation…” Your eyes widen a bit. “Wait a second… Buu can transmute things!”

“Most of the things you’ve told me he likes to transmute are candies.” Pantea reminds you.

“Right. So might need some training to get him to… not try to turn burning coal into molten chocolate, but I figure it could work. In the meantime, something to cool the ground a bit? Maybe work on fixing that giant sinkhole.” Haha, you’ve got a solid idea on how to really fix this now!

“I might be able to try that another time. Been putting some more work into a project of mine.”

That gets you curious, but at the same time you sense Lapis make a sudden stop and bolt downward. You also sense a couple people nearby, not anyone strong, but not anyone you’re familiar with. Your Scouter also picks up… some machines? Huh.

“Hrmn. Hold that thought a sec, gonna help Lapis with a thing. I’ll be back soon, just wanna check out what’s going on down here.”

“Sure thing. Not like I’m going anywhere.” she responds cheekily.

“Also, maybe some insulation foam sealant for that big flaming hole.” you comment in an equally cheeky tone.

“Har har, Gohan.”

“Could be Katchin~!”

“...Can you even make a metal foam out of that?” Pantea wonders, mostly to herself. “I mean I guess that’s possible, but the weight… hrmn…”

While she’s thinking on that, you land in a tree a bit away from Lapis. He’s staring down several people dressed in khaki safari outfits, armed with what look to be standard firearms, though some are in mechs… and some strange robots. Poachers, but surprisingly well-equipped ones.

Lapis casually puts his hands in his pockets. “Come on guys, do we really need to go through this same routine?”

“W-we’re not scared of you, Ranger!” one of them declares shakily, pointing his gun at Lapis and gulping loudly. “The payout for this one is too great for us to ignore!”

Lapis sighs dramatically and brushes his right hand through his hair. “Is this like, just a distraction or something? Because you KNOW you can’t get through me with those.” he points at the strange robots.

“We’ll see about that! Behold, the Pod Corporation’s final and greatest creation! Formation MOGUERA!”

The strange robots start to move together, a total of seven of them lifting up into the air. Ohhhh, it’s a combiner. Yeah that tracks. Pantea’s mumbling stops suddenly though, and she asks you, “Wait did he say Pod Corporation?”

However, even as the machines start to fit together… Lapis casually uses the Geist Magnum with one hand to knock each of them off-balance, with them crashing into one another and, while not destroyed, fall back in their uncombined states. There are gasps from the various poachers, even indignant ones. “Y-you have no SHAME! You would attack them during the combination sequence?!”

“Yes. I only give heroes the benefit of a doubt in transformations like that.” he states flatly, taking the other hand out of his pocket and cracking his knuckles. “You guys are no heroes.”

“Wait, Gohan, real quick, think you and Lapis could salvage that? It might be useful.” Pantea requests.

“I’ll get ‘em for ya, don’t worry.” You leap out of the tree you were perched from, exclaiming “Woah woah woah woah, hoooooold it. Come on Lapis, ya can’t just interrupt the combination sequence like that!”

“Sure I can.” he replies nonchalantly, even casually letting out a Kiai to knock the closest one away. “None of these guys are heroes.” He then drops some of the caught bullets, dusting his hands off. “So it’s perfectly within reason to stop combination sequences like that.”

“But don’t you wanna see how it looks all transformed?”

He shrugs. “Eh, not while I’m on the job. Might hurt some animals in the process.”

The poachers are now utterly perplexed by your conversation, most just staring slack-jawed as some keep trying to sneak away. Not very well, but there’s an attempt being made. Some in the mech suits even attempt to get the machines up and running again. They almost think your arrival is a blessing in disguise. Oh boy is it not.

“Look, tell ya what. I’ll handle the robot, you can take on the bad guys. Team work!”

Lapis blinks and asks directly, “You just wanna see a cool robot don’t you?”

“...That’s not the only reason?” you admit. “Come on, Pantea can make use of it.”

He ruffles your hair. “Dork.” Cracking his knuckles again, he turns to the poachers once more, “You’ve got one chance. Make it quick before I decide it’s funnier to blow it apart mid-sequence again.”

“...H-hahahaha! Foolish boy, you don’t know what you’ve done! Formation MOGUERA!”

The seven mechs lift into the air once more, energy flowing between them as they take position… and as the poachers start to cheer, Lapis dashes forward and quickly disarms and subdues them, one by one. Two machines turn into its arms, the drills centered in the middle of them taking a more prominent position. Two machines turn into the legs, bulky and decently armored. One machine forms the waist, connecting the legs together. One more machine forms the chest, a third and even larger drill taking up most of the cavity there. And a final one forms the head, with trapezoidal eyes shaped almost like… those cool shades in that show Peppa likes. There’s even a little drill poking out of the front of the face that seems to make up a “beak” of sorts.

It stands at a pretty impressive height, looming over you as the more arrogant poacher laughs in triumph. “You’ve done it now, boy! Behold, the MOGUERA!”

“Hah, I get it. It’s a giant mole.” you state in a relaxed tone. “Man, sis might even want to keep it.”

“MOGUERA, begin operation!”

Its eyes flash as the linked machines surge power through it. The drills on its body begin to spin, and one even punches into the ground. You finally take a proper battle stance. Okay, this should be fun.

“Pantea, what parts should I aim for for disabling it, and what parts should I avoid to keep them relatively intact?” you ask through your Scouter.

“Connection points have probably been damaged already, thanks to Lapis. You might be able to dismantle it bit by bit if you hit it with focused strikes at those areas. Avoid doing significant damage to any CPUs inside the machines, those might be useful to keep around.”

Its other arm punches into the ground, and you yell out at it, “Hey! HEY! No drilling allowed on this island, especially not without a permit! Bad robot, bad!” Dashing at incredible speeds, you grab hold of one arm by the joint and pull it back, getting the machine from digging any further into the ground. Recalling where you saw it combine to the torso portion, you make a quick but strong jab at it, and it pops off like it’s an inexpensive action figure.

“Also, if they’re Pod Corporation prototypes, they might have a mechanism similar to Capsules. Try to look for anything that might return them to their Capsule-knockoff states.”

The unbalanced machine stops trying to dig, refocusing its sights on you. But you’re already popping off the next arm, ensuring it can’t use either of them going forward. With both arms off, you next try to locate any obvious buttons on the outside of them. To the machine’s credit, even the detached arms attempt to swing around at you, surprisingly firing out beams from the tips of its drills. A volley of high-energy plasma projectiles from its eyes follow after, but you just casually bat them away. Let’s see… aha!

“Found ‘em!” you tell Pantea excitedly, successfully hitting a button on each arm and shrinking them down into… well, what look like oversized, knockoff Capsules. About the size of nearly ripe grapefruits. “Wow, you weren’t kidding with these.” You flip one down your left arm and catch it with your right, looking back at the mech. “So, what part next? How about… those legs!”

It forms a barrier of all things as you take aim with a Double Geist Magnum, attempting to tank the shots with it. And it does actually hold off the couple blasts you fire at it, but it’s also enough to overload the barrier. Legs down! To its credit, the machine isn’t backing down still, even after you Black Knight’d it. In fact, it starts to float in the air, kept aloft with small jets, building up energy around the central drill on its chest. Now coated in energy, the drill begins to spin vigorously, the air around it shimmering from the heat it’s producing.

But right as it fires its spinning heat ray of death, you’re at its neck and delivering a chop at the combination joint at the head, then quickly separate waist and torso. The beam shoots off into the sky and simply fades as the power for it just isn’t really there anymore. You grin wide as you juggle the Capsule’d (or is it ‘Pod’d’? Wow no wonder their brand didn’t take off) mech parts.

Lapis whistles softly. “Not bad, Gohan. Looks like you’ve gotten even quicker than last time I saw ya in action.”

“Heh, that was fun.” You look over at the now captured poachers. “Sooooo… how much do you folks know about this thing? Did like, any of you find a manual for it?”

“AS IF WE’D TELL YOU, BRAT!” the one that was attempting to command it earlier yells out in fury.

You keep juggling the oversized Capsules. “Also, is it just me, or does ‘Pod Corporation’ sound a bit too… on the nose for things like this? You sure it wasn’t a shell company of some sort?”

“It was a competitor originally.” Pantea answers for them. “But it lost out on too much of the market share and went bankrupt, it’s now supposed to be completely defunct. Black market does turn up some salvaged tech from them, though, especially for folks that don’t want to things like model numbers on Capsules traced back to them. Yurin’s ninja group made use of them for a time.”

“Oh yeah, that makes sense…” You now juggle them one-handed as your other rubs your chin. “Still… maybe the reason they keep showing up on the black market is that someone absconded with a majority of their products. Someone with deep pockets…”

You finally stop juggling the Pods and ask, “Need any help moving these guys off the island, Lapis?”

“Nah, I can handle this.” Lapis responds casually, starting to gather up the poachers.

“Theeeen can I get one of those MIR sashes? Just in case there are any others out there trying to cause problems while you’re away?” you ask with a big bright smile.

Lapis scoffs a laugh and shakes his head, but he smiles back and tosses one to you. “All right, Junior Ranger. Report back to your fellow Junior Rangers.”

You should have seen that coming. But you do as he asks, putting the sash on your arm. “This was fun though, thanks for letting me help, Lapis. And for letting me get these.” You gather up all the Pods and fly off.

You drop down, spotting Buu playing tag with Tommy and Marron while the adults watch them. Nappa and Krillin seem to be discussing some of their teamwork while Chuu Lee and Lazuli chat more casually.

Tommy and Marron stand at attention and salute. “Nothing to report, Junior Ranger Gohan!” the blonde girl replies, then giggles a little.

“Roger that. I’m here to report that I helped Lapis take down some poachers and their giant combining robot.” you state with almost comical seriousness, nodding to the Pods you’re holding. “He is currently handling the poachers.”

“Woooow!” Tommy exclaims excitedly. “Was it dangerous?”

“For me? Nah, handled ‘em pretty well.” You set the Pods down, then comment to the two, “You know, we could try out a Junior Ranger Team Technique some time.”

“Oh oh oh! Can it be a cool pose?” Marron asks, her eyes lighting up excitedly. “Like your mom does, Gohan!”

Lazuli and Krillin chuckle to themselves a bit, with Krillin asking, “Well, you got any ideas, kiddo?”

“Hmmm… can you hold me and Tommy up, Gohan? So we balance on your shoulders with one foot, while you hold our other foot with your hands?” She then gives Buu an excited look. “Oh, oh, oh, and Tommy and I can hold Buu above you!”

Buu smiles as he points at himself. “Buu be part of it too?”

“Yeah, like… the cool mascot, the friendly face of the team that everybody cheers for!” she pitches to him, and Buu enthusiastically pumps his fists in the air.

“Buu like that!”

Well, it’s silly, but hey, why not? You help the both of them up, and Buu leaps up so he balances on Marron’s hand with one foot, and then Tommy’s with the other. “Now let’s all say ‘Junior Rangers!’”

“JUNIOR RANGERS!~”

So this is why mom likes striking such poses so much…

The four of you laugh, and you set them down, now approaching Krillin and Nappa. “Say, I did manage to catch your teamwork during the tournament with the Grand Kai and some others in the Afterlife. Was still a bit of a surprise, but you two did well together. You gonna stick together for next Mifan Tournament, Nappa, Krillin?”

The large Saiyan gives a shrug. “Probably, whenever that is. Therapist said it might be good for me, help me try some new options. I… do think it helped a bit.”

“Hah, a bit? You were great in the tournament.” Krillin tells him with a soft jab to his arm.

Nappa actually smiles at that, continuing, “Probably what kept me from signing up with that Mugen guy when he made the offer.”

“Wait, what kind of offer?” you ask, tilting your head slightly.

“Mugen was looking to have me part of his crew of fighters. Pitched it as a ‘grand finale to the illustrious career of a Saiyan warrior.’” Nappa crosses his arms. “Had he gotten to me after that incident with Babidi, I might just have been convinced by it.”

Krillin gives Nappa an understanding look. “But you weren’t, because you’ve still got plenty ahead of ya.”

He nods. “Yeah. Needed something of a new perspective to really see that, but this old Saiyan warrior can still pick up plenty of new tricks!”

You smile at him. “So, what kind of new tricks are you going towards? Another form? Like Super Saiyan 3 that dad and uncle Raditz and sis and even myself have picked up, or maybe even Primal? Or do you have something different planned?”

He shrugs again. “Eh, 3 I might be able to figure out eventually, but that’s not what I’m working towards. I want better control. Better focus. I remember that feeling of wanting to get stronger at any cost, and how little that ended up actually meaning. Not gonna let it happen again.”

“Huh… yeah, I think I get that.” So, probably not the best idea to bring up Elder Kai with ‘em. Hmm… “Who’ve you talked with about that?”

“Well, Krillin was willing to give me a chance to try teamwork, see how that helps my mindset. I’d say it did.” He relaxes a bit. “Knew taking home the title of Champ would be a long shot… but losing didn’t frustrate as much as it used to. Other than that, talked a bit with Chuu Lee and Lapis about their training.”

“Still think a trip to Yardrat might be helpful down the road.” the aforementioned redheaded woman comments. “Or maybe Konpei, if you wanna try something a bit closer to Earth.”

“Those aren’t bad options.” you agree. “I know sis and Keli got some pretty major results through their training on Yardrat.”

“Yep! Maybe we can try the Ultra Divine Water again, when you feel you’re ready for it.” Krillin mentions to him, and Nappa smiles.

“Oh, hey, that Turtle Shell thing you’ve managed, Krillin, how’s that going? It still looks pretty handy, got anything else in store for it?” you ask next.

He nods. “Yeah, actually. Been inspired by Gamera a bit, I wanna see if I can get it to deflect attacks better through spinning it.”

He ruffles your hair as Chuu Lee giggles. “Okay, okay, I’ll get ‘em to her. Watch for suspicious activity, Junior Rangers.”

“Yes sir!” you, Marron, and Tommy all reply together.

With Lapis teleporting away, you return focus to Krillin. “So, wanna give test your new ideas out?”

He flips up onto his feet and nods, moving a bit away, forming the energy shell in front of him. From what you can tell, he’s sorta slowly cycling Ki into it in order to keep its durability high. That makes sense, probably able to block much stronger attacks through that.

“So… figure you might be able to throw it like you do the Destructo Disk? That might be one way to get the spinning going… oh oh oh! Maybe you could even add spikes to it, a defense with offense potential!” You get excited, waiting to see what he’ll do. “Peppa tends to use Magic to give her attacks as a spin, specifically Wind Magic. Maybe you could enhance your technique with some of your own.”

“Heh, all right, let’s try this one at a time.” He starts to put a bit more Ki into it, then bringing it above his head. “Okay… here it goes!” The turtle shell starts to move a bit, picking up speed slowly but surely. Once he’s got a good spin going, he launches it towards you, and you attempt to block it. While successful, and while you do manage to hold off against it… you also feel yourself flung away from it, ending up tossed to the ground and rather ungraciously knocked face-first into the ground.

“You, uh, okay there kid?” Nappa questions. You just give a thumb’s up in answer.

Pushing yourself back up, you shake your head. “Hokay. I think the deflecting part is working.” Standing back on your feet, you get ready for the next one. “If you edge it like the Destructo Disk, I think you’d be able to spike it overall. See if that works!”

Krillin focuses again, forming another turtle shell of Ki, then once again raising it over his head. This time, in addition to spinning, spikes jet up from it, that actually helping it spin a bit better, to his surprise. Krillin smirks, then takes aim. “Careful Gohan, you better dodge this one! HAAA!”

Like an angry turtle dragon, the spiked shield comes spinning at you, and this time you genuinely do dodge it. The attack passes under you, finally hitting a large boulder nearby and shattering it completely. “Dang, okay, that’s definitely something I don’t wanna take head-on.”

“Haha, but this has definitely worked!” Krillin cheers, though you notice he seems a little tired from trying to maintain such a complicated technique. Still, he pushes on. “What else you thinking on, Gohan?”

“Hmm…” Krillin rubs his chin, thinking the idea over. “I can certainly give it a try, but it’ll be tough.” He brings out one last turtle shell shield, trying to put much more energy into it. You yourself build up speed, dashing around him and finally stopping right in front of the shield. Krillin puts as much power as he can into it and has it cover you, energy swirling around you. “Okay, give it a shot!”

“SHELL SPARK!”

You launch forward, and for a short time the shield is able to keep up! …But only for that short time, as you end up ramming through the shield with the Shinespark, the energy around it dissipating as you rocket off. You stop yourself in midair, trying to figure out what the issue was. Wasn’t your energy that was the problem, but might not have been enough from Krillin to really maintain it. Floating back, you notice he looks a little winded.

“Well… might need to work out the kinks for it on my end, but guess that’s a sound idea, in theory. Whew…” Krillin tells you, wiping sweat from his brow.

“Hmm… maybe Magic would help with that. Seems like you’re using a lot of Ki to maintain them, Krillin.” Chuu Lee notes. “Wind Magic definitely would help with that.”

“Heh heh, yeah, but I think that can wait until later.” He sits down and relaxes a bit. “Still, thanks for the help there, Gohan. Got a great start to these.”

You take some time to sit down with Chuu Lee and meditate, taking things slow and easy, your mind staying calm and clear. You do telepathically share a few things with her about how you trained in the Afterlife. The two of you compare some things, with how Shin helped train you and how Elder Pybara instructs those on Yardrat, how Soba was able to pick up the Exorcism abilities you demonstrated, and some of her own forays into furthering her skills. Her current meditations are on some more… well, mundane things. Balancing her skills as a martial artist with her new family, taking what she’s seen from your mom and dad into consideration as a bit of a guideline, but not gospel.

The topic eventually comes to how you, Peppa, and Videl have been developing and growing as people, the paths you all are walking down. You have to admit, Videl and Kuriza had unprecedented synergy in the Tag Tournament, but more importantly she was helping Kuriza reach his own new power. Heh, Emperor Kuriza, the universe’s Golden Hero, such a sharp contrast to Freeza that it might give one whiplash. Still, she’s genuinely helped him improve not just in strength, but as a fighter in general. Chuu Lee speculates, and even sorta hopes, that she’ll end up taking on more students some day as a genuine martial arts instructor.

Sis meanwhile looks like she’s balanced her life very well. Training to get stronger, keeping her mind sharp, even keeping up her drawing skills, while still finding time for friends and games. Speaking of, you can sense her with her friends having their own little day together. You’re not exactly sure WHY Lime needs this whole… silly gameshow whatever thing to hook up with Monty over, but eh, that’s on them. You’ll let them have their fun.

And then there’s you. You’re still sorta adjusting to things back on Earth, realizing you do kinda have more limits in what you can do compared to what was possible on Grand Kai’s planet. Even more mundane things like sleep have been a little wonky, but it’s not caused too much issue so far. And you have had to play a bit of catch-up with schoolwork, but you’ve caught up enough that it’s a breeze now. More importantly, you feel like you’ve been taking things a bit easier since you came back to Earth. Even taking down the poachers’ MOGUERA and training with Krillin hasn’t been that much a work-out.

‘So what direction are you intending to go, Gohan? You have plenty of strength as-is, but you can always get stronger. But you’ve also developed some other focuses, even beyond the games you’ve been playing before. Those guitar skills you showed off at your revival didn’t happen overnight, after all.’

It’ll be a great thing to strive for, I think.’

‘Majin Buu, the Medic, huh?’ she asks with a bit of a chuckle.

You add, ‘Of course, that’s not to say I’m neglecting my own training. Just because I’m taking things a bit easier now as I readjust doesn’t mean I don’t want to still grow as a fighter. Heck, even today’s been great at getting me to try more lateral ideas and techniques.’

‘That’s also good to hear. You’ve definitely gotten tougher since you were last here on Earth.’

With that all settled, you and Buu wave goodbye to everyone and head in the direction of Melchior, you showing the way as Buu follows. Arriving at the man’s little residence, you give a wave as he greets you outside. “Well well, Son Gohan, good to see you again. And I see you’ve brought your new friend with you.”

“Hiya Melchior!” you greet with a friendly smile. “Buu, this is Melchior. He’s helped a lot of us understand and improve certain weapons and the like we’ve used against a lot of bad guys. He’s pretty much the most knowledgeable person on Earth, if not the whole universe, on the crafting of Magical weaponry.”

“Ooooh.” the little Majin coos, impressed.

He chuckles softly. “You flatter me, my boy. So, what brings you by this time?”

“This, actually.” you tell him as you bring out the still-sheathed Muramasa, its very presence giving the looming sense of danger. “This is the sword we sealed the essence of the demon Janemba inside, the thing that was causing all Hell to literally break loose last year. We wanted to keep him from harming another host, so binding ‘em to a blade like this one seemed like the best option. Still… I don’t completely know how well it’s all been sealed, and if there’s a ticking timer for it to break free once more.”

His gaze turns a bit more serious as he looks over the sword, holding it in his hands. You get a little worried as you feel that looming, ominous presence increase in pressure… but to your surprise, Melchior seems mostly unfazed by it. He gives a slow nod. “Mmm… yes, the sealing does look to be successful. The blade itself is of fairly high quality, too. It is strong and heavy, but malleable enough to contain such a presence. Still… there are some things I could recommend.”

“Do tell, sir. I’d really rather this not become a problem later.”

He rubs his chin. “First off, the very presence of this thing is certain to attract a degree of… unwanted attention. Do not let it out of your sight, or at the very least leave it within the care of those you are completely certain you can trust.”

You rub the back of your neck. “Yeah, Towa would probably love getting her hands on something like this…”

“Second, the blade itself is now much like the Masamune, or your mother’s Thunderous Rainbow, containing a spirit inside it, a will of its own. Unlike those swords, though, the spirit inside is one of chaos and malice. Even drawing it without being properly guarded against its will can lead to it attempting to take over.”

You give a nod. “Yeah, figured there’d be similarities. It’s why I decided to name it the Muramasa.”

Melchior smiles a bit at that. “Clever. But more to the point, because this sword has a will, and… not exactly a ‘soul’ but a ‘spirit’ of its own, just as it can influence you, you can influence it. Your strength of will may slowly but surely give it cause to change.” He hands it back to you, taking out a bottle and sipping a quick drink from it as he sits down. “There may be some materials I can use to reinforce its scabbard, though. I may have some still in my workshop, but it will take a bit more time to see what all is necessary.”

Looking over the sword, you think over what he said. You might be able to… well, turn the sword “good” in essence. Now THAT’S something to work towards. “So, is it just reinforcing the scabbard, or adding something else to it?”

He smiles again. “Ideally you would want something that can draws in positive energies to cancel out the negative ones that now permeate the blade. Sadly even I would struggle making that from scratch.”

“Let’s first focus on possibly changing the sword’s nature. Is there like… a certain kind of meditation I’ll need to do to accomplish that?” You look down at the sword again. The ominous presence is still strong, still giving off this… almost demanding presence.

He rubs the side of his mustache. “The primary focus should be on exerting a positive will, one that does not shy away from the kind of power that the sword possesses, but also is able to refuse its influence. I would recommend spending some time out of your day and making it routine, to assert this positive energy. Consider it like forging metal, heating it and then treating it so it is hard but not brittle. If you try to force this, it can make your own mind brittle, giving it room for the sword to take hold. But if you show you will not yield to it, the sword will show less and less ability to influence you, and your will shall assert itself over the demon’s inside.” He taps his chin contemplatively. “A chant may be helpful in this, steeling your mind as you repeat it. Something that wards off evil.”

You ponder that, thinking of a few phrases and chants and even spells you’ve heard. “Hmm… that might work. Oh, er… one last thing. You mentioned mom’s sword. Is… it okay?”

Melchior smiles proudly. “One moment, my boy.” He moves into his little home, and after a beat, comes out with a long object wrapped in a silky cloth. He hands it to you, telling you, “Why don’t you see for yourself? It took quite some time to really understand the magic that Dabura is capable of in turning things to stone, but I managed to figure it out eventually. More importantly, I’d say this is some of my finest work yet… even if it used up some Nemurian ores and Dreamstone in the process.”

You slowly unravel the cloth around it, and… there it is. Good as new, if not even better. Thunderous Rainbow. Mom’s sword. You bow your head respectfully. “Thank you, sir. I’ll make sure this gets back to her as soon as possible.”

“I know you will. Thank you for stopping by, Gohan.”

You look over mom’s sword, still smiling. Buu looks at it curiously, even poking the sword with his antenna. He then… smiles and waves at it, letting out a friendly “Hello!” to the sword, directly. Buu then laughs happily. Hhhhuh?

Melchior raises an eyebrow at that behavior, giving a soft “Hmm” as he observes Buu interact with the sword. “Curious.”

Okay this is getting weird. “Er, what is, sir?”

“Buu, tell me, can you sense a presence in that sword?” he questions.

“Uh-huh! She friendly.” Buu responds nonchalantly.

“Impressive. I would suspect that a being of such great Magical power like yourself can understand the spirits that inhabit blades like that. Masa and Mune might be in for a surprise.” Melchior chuckles, but then he looks at you seriously. “Hrmn. It may be something to keep in mind during your meditations. Buu might be able to help you, but you must take care that the sword does not attempt to influence him as well.”

“So, we should try to practice meditation and a chant together, right?” you ask both Buu and Melchior. “Something to synch up with while meditating towards the sword.” You snap your fingers. “Oh I’ve got it! Buu, let’s try this chant.”

He tilts his head curiously as you set mom’s sword a good distance away from the Muramasa, resting the blade down in front of you. Buu sits down on a little log, kicking his legs and humming a tune to himself. “Chant, chant, chant, gonna chant a chant~!”

“Ahem.” You clap your hands together and take a meditative stance. “Yu Mo Gui Gwai Fai Di Zao… Yu Mo Gui Gwai Fai Di Zao…”

Melchior gives an amused smirk. “Ah, something designed to ward off and banish evil spirits. Not a bad choice, Gohan.”

Buu is confused at first, but shrugs and attempts it himself. “Yiu… mo… gwai… gwaai… faai… di… jau…” he attempts to repeat, not exactly sure if he’s doing it right or not, but trying his best.

And… to your surprise, there is a slight effect. The looming presence emanating from the blade is… quenched, if only by a little. It would probably take hours for there to be any real noticeable progress on this, but… still. There’s a reaction.

And then Buu starts to clap and laugh. “It worked! It worked! Hahaha, Buu did it, Gohan!”

The break in concentration lets the presence try to reassert itself, so looks like this will take much more concentration, too. Still… proof of concept. The chant helps. Melchior actually comes over to pat Buu on the head. “That you did, little Buu. Good job.” He then looks at you, nodding at the sword so you move it away from the Majin. “I believe it has something to do with the concentration of positive energy within you.”

Buu stands up and places his hands on his hips, puffing his chest up proudly. “Buu wanna do good!”

Picking up the sword, you hold your other hand out for a fist bump with him. “And you will, lil’ bud. Heck, if this is what we can do from the start, imagine where we’ll be a year from now!”

The Majin does an excited little dance, then sits down, a low gurgling sound coming from him. “…Buu hungry now. Can we get snack?”

You laugh, putting away the Muramasa and picking up mom’s sword. “All right bud. Come on, let’s head back home, we can get some lunch there. Mom’s gonna want this back soon anyway.” You give a respectful bow to Melchior. “Thank you once more, sir. You’ve done a lot to help us, and we always appreciate it.”

He nods at you. “You all keep bringing me very interesting things to work with, and I appreciate that. Take care, Son Gohan, little Buu, and best of luck in your endeavors!”

You both wave to him and fly off. Today’s been great. Looking to Buu, you grin and ask, “Race ya home? Winner gets extra snacks!”

“YAAAAY!” And Buu rockets off ahead of you, and you have to power up to catch up.

Please?” You clap your hands together pleadingly. “You’re a bit more neutral a party in this, since you know Lime but aren’t jumping at the chance to make all this about her, and… you know. Plus you’d definitely be a great help in keeping some of mom’s… eccentricities in-line.”

Cocoa twirls a finger in her hair. “Well…”

That’s an opening. “Plus, I do concede you’ve got a point on this being a bit much to… y’know, get Monty together with Lime. Maybe we can rethink this, something more along the lines of everyone involved having fun? Not taking the attempted dating game too seriously, y’know? …Still can kinda try to work things so Lime and Monty get a chance with each other. Sell it as… Making new friends, or more!”

Cocoa sighs. “Maybe…”

There ya go! She’s turned around on the idea. “Plus it’s not like we’re having things set up for like, blind date fights or something! Haha!” You laugh, but then pause, and mumble under your breath, “…Ideas for later.” Cocoa flicks you on the forehead. “Ow.”

“That did not hurt.” she states with a slight smirk. But you notice it gets an idea in her mind. “Okay, okay, I can help with this. But… well, let’s look at it this way: if we want this to be about folks having fun, we have to make an actual game out of this, not just blind dates. So maybe have people pair up in an initial round, but have them compete for a prize in a second one. Perhaps let them switch if this keeps up, for different prizes?” Cocoa tilts her head up a bit in thought. “It’d be pretty trivial to rig it, but could also end up with some surprises if we don’t. Okay, how about this: a quick matching game leading to the pairs in the first round. Those that end up there have some time to get to know each other, then lead up to a couple games they can compete in together. This will keep it from being too obvious that there’s some form of rigging going on, while also letting everyone have a bit of fun matching up.”

You smile brightly. “All right Cocoa, that sounds like a plan!”

“We need to balance the candidates, though.” she points out. “These twelve might be okay if, and that’s a big if, they all want to join in, but you’ll also need a few guys in to make things a bit more even. Otherwise it’s Monty and Lime competing against everyone else.”

“Thaaat’s fair.” You tap your tail on your lap as you rest your chin on your knuckles. “So, some single guys we know…”

“I’ve got some in mind already.” Cocoa tells you with a wink. “Couldn’t hurt to invite some you know, though. Might also be a bit harder to keep your mom’s… eccentricities at bay, but this could work out for more than just Monty and Lime.”

Cocoa raises an eyebrow. “Isn’t he already with Videl?”

“Well, we can pitch it like this: it’s kind of a couples competition, something for, y’know, people in our general age range to just get together and have fun with.” You sit up a bit. “Videl and Sharpner can pair up together!”

“...Hmm…” Cocoa lays back down on her bed. “Okay. Could have sign-ups of some sort. Some could enter together, others can let… ‘luck’ decide who ends up with whom. Giving Monty and Lime a chance to actually come about this a little more organically.”

You lay down with her, smiling brightly. “There we go. And… I guess we could try to get Hado and Sala from the tournament, if they’re interested…”

“How’re you gonna get all these people in this, Peppa?”

“Invitations, with a simple yes or no of participating.” you say confidently. “We can gauge interest from who all responds. I could even draw up some fun graphics for ‘em…”

She giggles at that. “That’s fair. Anything else we should consider?”

“Hmm… letting Izzy know all the details. She’s sorta involved in all this too, but she might be competing as well.” You place your hands behind your head and stare up at the ceiling in Cocoa’s room. “How much should she know?”

“Probably about as much as you’d want to tell Gohan. At least a basic overview, but anything more should be something you’re willing to throw Gohan’s way if he ends up joining up too.”

You nod. “Okay, fair. So! Let’s go over all of this…”

“Yeah yeah! So, there we go! I guess we do need to settle on the actual challenges… hrmn, and WHERE we’d host all this…” You look out the window for a moment, out at the skyline of West City. Then the idea hits you. Standing tall in the distance, one of the more extravagant structures in the city. “Cocoa. Cocoa.” you call to get her attention, pointing at the window. “Dream Land!~”

“Dream Land? Wait, are you thinking of renting the whole amusement park out or something?” she asks in surprise.

“Not entirely, but certain sections of it. It’ll save a lot of trouble getting some competitions set up, and it’ll be a great place to just have some fun at regardless!” You grin widely at her. This is a great plan.

“...One of the prizes could even be tickets for some of the rides… maybe even season passes…” Cocoa mumbles in realization. “Okay, yeah, this can work.”

“I’d still say we watch some gameshows for other ideas, or try things that we come up with.” You’re almost bouncing with exitement now. “Got any you recommend?”

She crosses her arms and smirks confidently. “Oh I can think of some.”

The two of you spend the next few hours going through some gameshows, with you taking some vigorous notes alongside a few sketches of competition ideas. Cocoa’s mom brings the two of you some snacks, even giving some of her own recommendations on things the two of you can watch for ideas (though making a point of “no movies with terrifying death games” that seems to be pointed more at Cocoa than yourself). Yeah… this can DEFINITELY work. The only things left now are getting everything to set in motion and a solid date for when all this can happen.

Gonna need to get in contact with mom…

So. The good news. Maple is totally on-board with your plan. The… worrying news. MAPLE is totally on-board with your plan. Matchmaker Maple. Your mom is still letting out an excited “eeeeeeeee~” and it is honestly getting a little concerning. You almost worry she’s going to chart out all the possible pairings in the shape of some kind of weird Karnaugh map. Thankfully, she doesn’t.

“S-so… you’re willing to help us rent out part of the park, then?” you ask tenatively to at least get her to refocus herself again.

She clears her throat. “Ahem. Yes. It shouldn’t be too difficult. And I can even get things set pretty soon, if you’re up for it.”

“Yeah! Cocoa and I had gone over some of the options for competitions. A few rounds with grand prizes and consolation prizes.” You show Maple the sketch you made of one of the invitations. It’s bordered with a quiz show buzzer, an ancient and ominous stone face on a circular disk, tubes putting out green slime that a couple tiny people are trying to dodge, and even go-karts all racing around a track, an obstacle course connecting all four corners together. “Of course, these are just some of the appetizers.”

“Appetizers?” Goku asks excitedly, poking his head in as he and Groucho arrive back home.

Maple giggles, then asks you, “Think you wanna fit in some kind of food contest too?”

“Maybe, maybe. But I’d want some way to make it fun to everyone, and… y’know, Saiyan eating habits…” You and Gohan do your best to mind your manners, sure. But the two of you can still eat A LOT.

“Not just eating, cooking as well!” mom tells you with a smile. “Something relatively simple that the teams can make together.”

“Like pancakes?” Goku remarks with a bit of a grin as he looks at your mom knowingly.

“H-hey! Pancakes are great!” Maple retorts in protest. “…But yes, like pancakes.”

Goku takes a seat with you all, spinning the chair around and resting his arms on its back. “So these are all competitions and stuff, right? Why not try some fights?”

“A good idea, but not for this one. That’s an idea for later.” you inform dad, and he grins at that.

You all sense Gohan and Buu arriving home, and Maple asks you, “What all do you have planned? Let’s take it from the top.”

You nod. “Yeah, that’d be a fun one too.”

“What’s this about a cooking competition?” Gohan asks as he walks in.

“Can Buu help taste?!” the tiny Majin requests gleefully.

…That is food for thought (hah, food). “Mmmmaybe, lil’ guy, but we’ve gotta get some things settled first.” You glance to your brother and a different, non-food idea crosses your mind. “Say, Gohan, you got to test out Pantea and Bulma’s arcade game most recently, you feel like that’s gotten to the point where it can hit a proper beta testing stage?”

He’s surprised by your question, but gives a slow nod. “Well, yeah. She said most kinks have been worked out, and it’s not that hard to really comprehend once you see it in action.”

Perfect. “Wooould you say they’ve hit a point where a bunch of teenagers can give it a proper trial? Aaaaaand maybe see it installed somewhere like, say, Dream Land?”

He raises an eyebrow. “If I say ‘yes’ will you stop giving me that ominous smirk?”

“I am not smirking ominously.” You most definitely are.

“Still think ya could do with some fun bits of sparring.” dad adds in.

“Could do, could do… maybe have it as part of the obstacle course, just with something a bit softer.” You sketch out the pugil sticks you saw in one of the game shows you and Cocoa watched, two people fighting using them. “Something like that.”

Gohan and Buu get mom’s attention, Buu eagerly asking for lunch, while your brother shows her the thing he’d been holding in his hands the whole time… oh! Her sword! Melchior finally fixed that, huh? You pull the various sketches and drawings you’ve made of these ideas back into one neat stack… and on top of it is the tunnel of love.

…Maybe you and Cocoa should visit it first, juuuust to see how it works. After renting out Dream Land, but just before the competitions start. You give her a quick text to see if she’s on-board with the idea.

And you’re grinning almost ear-to-ear when you see the reply. ‘It’s a date.’

When you have some free time, you teleport to Yardrat yourself to check up on her, finding her near Pybara once more, the aura of the Makaio-ken around her… yet she looks like she’s meditating.

She nods. “I’m not resting on my laurels. You and I may be Mifan Champs, but I still ended up out of the ring. Even if Tien says I’m a Crane School Master now, I feel like I’ve got quite a ways to go.”

Keli smirks and nods, motioning for you to follow after her. She gives a polite bow to Pybara, then takes off, the two of you speeding towards one of the more desolate areas of the planet. “I’ve seen both Soba and Master Pybara use the technique to great effect, so I’ve got some warnings. There are a couple ways it can be preformed, the one I have the basics of requires physical strikes.”

“What about the other one?” you inquire, landing on top of a large, abandoned building while Keli takes a crane stance on a tall spire.

“It can be preformed from a distance. Takes a bit longer to really get going, but it’s also much harder to work against.”

Doing some stretches, you next inquire, “So, how about the Makaio-ken? How long can you keep it up?”

“At this point? I can get it to last a good 30 minutes depending on how much power I’m using with it. Still a risk of it overtaxing my body and even Melee’s if I push it too hard, but I know its limits better now.”

“Nice! All right, let’s see what you’ve got!”

Keli wastes no time and rushes forward at you, delivering a few quick crane strikes. You block them easily, and make her actually work for the hits she’s attempting.

Next you notice that Keli isn’t really trying to strike any vitals, merely land hits. And… very slowly, even blocking them starts to feel a bit more difficult. Okay, she’s still on offense, so she won’t really be expecting this! You dodge the next few hits, and as soon as Keli goes for another strike that you have to block… “Boop!” You poke her in the nose and flip away, the woman caught in complete surprise by it. It… does take a bit more effort than you expected, but you do avoid Keli’s attempted retaliation.

You grin cheekily and give a little V-sign… but then you notice a familiar Ki signature. A bizarrely familiar one. In fact, one you recognize all too well… because it’s YOUR Ki. Keli holds her hand up, condensing that energy into a single orb. “Caught me off-guard, guess that’s one thing I need to watch out for while using this. Been borrowing your power for this, Peppa, but ya know what? You can have it back now!”

You’re forced to deflect the attack after you notice it chasing you, with it taking out one of the abandoned buildings after you knock it away. And even that takes a considerable amount more effort to deflect away. You and Keli relax a bit, with you commenting, “Okay, that was definitely a surprise. Man, that… coulda’ gone a lot worse if I were taking this too lightly.”

“You still held your own pretty well. Not bad, Peppa.” she compliments.

“So… is there a way to apply it to Ki blasts or something? Might be how you can do this from a distance.” you speculate.

“Master Pybara explained the distance version is more subtle, almost passive. It works more by… well, the ‘influence’ of Ki between individuals. Drawing out the energy of another by manipulating your own energy.” She stretches a bit. “Physical attacks just allow it to be done quicker, more directly. If you were to use Ki attacks for it, I don’t think it’d be worth the cost. Especially compared to something like the MP Buster.”

“Ahhh, that’s fair.”

I particularly like this D. That's a potentially devastating move for taking someone out of a larger fight, provided the user can hold their own until the drain starts working.

“So… does it need to have this, er… vampiric effect? Like, can it be donated willingly?” You then rub your chin, commenting, “Kinda like the Spirit Bomb, now that I think about it…”

Keli smirks. “Like the Spirit Bomb, yes. It’s absolutely possible, the technique is more about the manipulation and gathering of energy rather than simply taking it from someone else. Energy given willingly can be used just the same as energy sapped away.”

“Ahh, okay! That clarifies a few things.” You then think for a moment, your tail swaying behind you. “Say… would it be possible to kinda synch the technique up with the Barrier caused by the Spirit Bits? Not having them pummel an opponent, but like, trapping them inside the barrier with you and using the energy taken to help fuel said barrier.”

Keli’s surprised by that question, but she slowly nods. “Huh… that… actually might work. Definitely things to think on once I’ve gotten a handle on all this though.”

You get ready for another round of sparring, next asking, “Okay, how about you show me what the Makaio-ken can do now? I’m eager to see the fruits of that training.”

Keli takes her crane stance again, her aura surging around her. “All right then. I’m game.”
