Oh no- oh no! I'm going down!

You don't know what happened! You thought you were a pretty experienced space pilot. On a routine patrol of this sector of space- you decided to take a little detour nearby an uncharted world, PNF-404, as named by the Kopites, before you suddenly lost control of your ship! Your ship's computer isn't able to stop the mechanical and electrical components from freaking out and gradually pulling your ship into the planet's gravity. You brace for impact...

With a great crash, your ship, the SS Topaz falls to the ground. Thankfully, you are safe and sound- but after taking stock of the damage, it appears you may be trapped on this planet...

Leaving the cockpit and going outside, you quickly take stock of your surroundings. This planet is an uncharted world of which very few explorers have visited- it is even said that the Hocotate Freight company intentionally hides this planet from star maps to avoid people digging into their business ventures. There is no sign of civilization here- and now you can tell why.

The entire planet's atmosphere- there is SO much oxygen! It's pure poison! No living thing from your homeworld could possibly survive this place for even a moment without a space suit! And that means this planet is totally perilous to you- and you have to leave as soon as possible. But your ship... There's no way you can leave orbit in this condition. It's damaged and is missing some parts- they've likely been scattered all over the planet's surface when you nearly broke up in the atmosphere.

To make things worse, your ship's filtration system can only filter out the toxic oxygen for so long. You only have a little over three weeks, or twenty two days, until your time is up and you will need to leave this planet- or else you will die.

Alright. Don't panic. You know there is an absolutely zero percent chance you will be able to even carry back the parts yourself if you find them all, and you don't know what kind of dangerous wildlife could be present on this planet that you are defenseless with... let's try to focus on something productive. Your ship isn't stocked with food right now- so you might want to find something to eat.
>>
Nearby your crash site, you find a strange growth in the ground. Besides a half buried red object, you have also found what appears to be a strange variety of carrot stuck in the soil! It's huge! These are exactly like the Pikpik carrots back home! You pull hard on the stem only for it to come out... as a little red man.

“Gaah!”

The creature, an unusual being with wide eyes, no visible mouth or ears, and a long nose, stares at you passively. Before you even wait for it to register you as its next meal- you ready your suit and eject a small amount of your suit's gas from your sleeve along with a pilot light to create a makeshift flamethrower weapon- fwoosh!

From the blast of the flame the creature is... totally unharmed. Not even singed. Strangely enough, you think this thing is heavily fire retardant, despite being a plant. Well, that was useless. Now you only have twenty one days worth of life support left after that stunt...

But at least it's not attacking you! In fact, it's almost like its watching you expectantly- like its imprinting on you somehow.
>>
As it turns out, the little man, who you are calling a Pikmin, isn't a predator. If anything, it seems to want to help you. Perhaps your space suit's antennae and similar size make it think you are one of their own kind?

After a few minutes of practice- you manage to get the creature to follow some basic command via your space whistle. And a few moments later, you find out what this creature uses as a sort of shelter...

It's like a great red onion, though to you it looks like a spaceship. It has a mix of biological and technological components, and seems strangely linked to the Pikmin before you. Using the pikmin to help fix up your ship- you realize pretty soon just one Pikmin, though it does help your lonliness, will in no way be enough for you to survive. Fortunately, when by chance the Pikmin finds a large pellet fallen from one of the tall flowers around the crash site, it takes it back to the onion and in a moment, two seeds eject from the ship. After a short while, they sprout and you pull them up- resulting in two new pikmin!

Fascinating. It seems this onion is both a ship and shelter of some kind, as well as part of an important role in reproduction. Perhaps the pikmin themselves are merely like its appendages, receiving nutrients directly from the onion... or they are born with all the energy they need and are merely left to die when it runs out. How cruel...

Soon enough, a squad of Pikmin has been born! With them, you think you just might have a chance to survive! According to your readings, you think there is probably a part close by, but there is also safety in numbers- you could grow your army to a safe number, since judging by the size of the plants here some creatures may be much bigger then you and the pikmin. Spending some time learning about Pikmin and knowing what they can do may also be a good idea.

How are you going to spend this day?

There was that blue pellet in the background behind the red pellet flower, or right next to it if it was a totally right next to it but smaller. We could send some pikmin over there to retrieve it while we learn.

Also note there is a large gated barrier way back, some coconut shell or something o the ground, and a body of water we dont want any of our pikmin near for fear of them dying because only the blue ones can breath in the water, not that we know that. Perhaps with enough training we could teach the pikmin how to swim?

DAY ONE
You decide most of the first day learning about pikmin. After leaving some seeds in the ground for a few hours as an experiment, the sprouts are actually changing- absorbing nutrients from the soil. The “leaf” on top of the pikmin stalk turn into a bulb, and a few hours after that, that bud sprouts into a large white flower. The pikmin seem to have different levels of aging or maturity among themselves!

These “adult” pikmin, who you are calling flower pikmin, move significantly faster then other pikmin types, and seem slightly more intelligent. They have a bit more independence then the leaf-type pikmin, and seemingly help keep the “younger” pikmin in line. By far the biggest difference is how easily they are distracted. Bud pikmin are seemingly somewhere in the middle, similar to an adolescent. Of course, you have no idea how this ties into pikmin reproduction; you assume the onion is the only “adult” of their species among them, or a sort of eusocial insect queen that creates all of the younger pikmin to act as worker drones...?

While walking through a small patch of head-tall grass, the leaf pikmin keep getting distracted from some urge to pull up the blades- before you can get them back in line, one pulls out a large sac of a thick molasses-like substance and greedily stabs its long nose inside- draining some of the fluid. Then, in an instant, it fully matures into a flower pikmin! It seems with some of this rare and rich nectar, you can speed up the process of pikmin maturation in an instant. You allow several more pikmin to drink from the nectar sac until its all gone- giving you a decent number of flower pikmin.

You decide to spend a little more time growing out the pikmin you have; but since you didn't dedicate the day just to growing their numbers, you don't have as many as you could. However, while retrieving a pellet, a pikmin falls into the water. It begins to panic and drown, giving off alert calls- however, you blow your whistle to guide it back to shore and you manage to save it without worse for wear. Indeed, it seems Pikmin cannot swim. Your space suit gives you almost total immunity from this planet- you can explore underwater, but your pikmin can't come with you. Also, the blue pellet you receive from that little diversion only granted you one pikmin seed- but the red ones grant two. They both seem the exact same size and would have identical calories, and yet the onion produces more seeds from a color that matches. Curious.

After today's excursions, you have amassed a squad of a dozen Pikmin- with six being flowers, and six being leaves or buds. While the immediate area seems secured- you notice a large white wall built from dead plant material. It blocks progress deeper into this area. Approaching it, you realize you'll need the pikmin to slowly break this wall down if you want to go any further in this area- a task that could take several hours or even days to complete depending on how large and strong the wall is. You also learn that you could leave the pikmin to accomplish a task while you go off to do something else- a form of multitasking. However, you don't have time for this first day.

But looking through the small gaps in the wall you happen to see... oh boy. Creatures. Bigger then you by a full two heads and many times your mass- these things look dangerous. While your spacesuit is well insulted against danger and triple layered for redundant protection- enough bites from teeth that big could eventually ear through it and let that poison atmosphere inside. You don't think a spear or sharp rocks would help much at all here- you'll need the Pikmin to protect you.

For the last few hours of dusk- you order your pikmin to dig your ship out of the soil and put it upright. Its hard work but soon enough it is done. Your ship, while badly damaged and missing its core components for deep-space flight, can still fly into the upper atmosphere of this planet. This is a good thing- as many of the parts you need are scattered many miles away.

Finally, the sun begins to set over the planet. You aren't' exactly sure how you know- but you have an odd feeling that the largest and most dangerous beasts on this planet are nocturnal. You'll need to seek shelter in your spaceship for the night for a safe place to sleep- no way you're sleeping under the stars here. You only hope the pikmin will be okay...

Wait. When the sun begins to set, the pikmin begin to climb back inside the onion! That must be its purpose as a shelter- a safe place to rest. You enter your own spaceship and fly up into orbit- and to your amazement the onion follows you! It's loyalty surprises you still. But this also means that it will follow you to any new locations you need to recover your missing ship parts!

That night, you sleep inside your ship with the heating elements as low as you can make them, scavenging what little food remains onboard- a water flavored nutrient bar, a few stale pieces of candy, and a Piktamin U supplement. You are in survival mode now- and that means conserving all of your resources and energy. From now on, you'll need to find food on the planet as well as build back up your ship parts. You know you can do this... You hope.

DAY TWO
You spend the morning of the second day breaking down the white wall that blocks you off from the rest of this area. When the wall finally falls, you can move on. Following the sensor readings- you finally come across a vital ship component- the ship's computer! Vital to the ships AI and autopilot- this will be a necessary part to recover to escape this planet. However, it unfortunately seems to be guarded by several more of those creatures... including an even bigger one.

These creatures, who you are calling Dwarf Bulborgs, seem to be awake and alert during the day- where as the biggest one is fast asleep. It's huge! You haven't seen the pikmin's capabilities yet, but if it manages to consume them all- you'd probably be next! But you can't recover the part without getting rid of the smaller ones... You decide to pick off the little bulborbs one by one- and then take on the big one.

Using your fast flower pikmin, you can lure the beasts away before swarming them with the rest of your Pikmin. You also learn a useful technique here- if you grab a pikmin by the stem and fling it with your arm, you can get quite a bit of distance. This actually helps more then you think- as you can throw pikmin on top of the larger beasts instead of forcing them to approach as an easily bitten-into swarm of bodies.

The decision to pick off the bulborbs one by one was a good one- the small creatures seem to give off an alarmed cry when attacked or in pain- if they were closer to the momma 'borb they'd probably wake it up.

As soon as the borbs are defeated, you notice the pikmin automatically picking up their bodies. While you could interrupt them with a well timed whistle, you decide to see what they do with it. Sure enough, they march the 'borbs back to the onion and it sucks them up- each granting another three seeds. Wow, you didn't realize Pikmin were carnivorous! Given how brutally they swarm anything bigger then themselves, you're really, really glad they see you as one of their own...

>>5405689
You briefly think of using something to carry and store nectar for later given how useful fully matured flower pikmin are. Grass baskets come to mind. While not impossible- it seems a little complicated for even flower pikmin to understand. Plus, you'd think the nectar would go bad or be eaten overnight by some of the wild critters around here. You could suck up some in the cargo hold, but cleaning it out would be a real nightmare...

Rolled 6 (1d8)

^ Number of Pikmin Lost

After your little Pikmin army recovers the bodies of the lesser bulborgs and you pull the newly sown seedlings- you now have an army of twenty one Pikmin. Despite how many they are, they seem fully capable of following your commands, forming into ranks. They even line up to be thrown if you merely hold out your throwing hand. The little soldiers and yourself march to take on the final challenge here.

You ambush the sleeping Bulborg- the great spotted beast getting covered in the biting Pikmin before it even stands up. However, after a few seconds, it manages to shakily get to its feet and begin shaking your pikmin off- a fierce battle begins.

The pikmin are fierce and very brave, you'll give them that, but they are helpless when alone. The bulborbs mouth is large and can sweep up and chew several Pikmin at a time, and with a distinct crunching noise and a soft cry- you lose a pikmin. Dying in your service, you silently consider how you feel about that-

Aim for the eyes and back, and immediately try to recall the pikmin that fall so we can repeat the process!

Don't forget to get the adolescent pikmin to pick up those grass blades to get some nectar!
With the beast defeated, we should haul the bulborg corpse back to the onion, then grab the computer.

>Worthy sacrifice (medium Pikmin empathy)
In the end, the loss of a few is for the greater good for the remaining pikmin, because thing about all the new pikmin we'll help grow! Their deaths are a sad consequence, but such is life on this planet.

On the plus side, we learned from this experience on how to minimize losses. Next time we ambush it, we'll start throwing pikmin like crazy all over it's back. If we don't manage to kill it before it shakes them all off, we can send some flower pipkin to peck at it's legs and run away to draw it's attention away, giving us enough time to start throwing more pikmin on it's back again.

>>5405729
I can't unsee the throw pikmin as a chad.
>>
You feel quite responsible for the Pikmin, and have felt a high degree of Pikmin Empathy. You have to take care of them- after all, they are your only hope at leaving this planet. They seem so dedicated to helping you survive- you can only hope you can return the favor somehow...

After the great Bulborb is defeated, you have lost a few Pikmin. However, one of the Pikmin that you lost was a flower pikmin, and surprisingly, a few small seedlings are in the ground after the battle ends. It seems that flower pikmin can occasionally drop seeds after they die, thus recovering some pikmin even if flower pikmin are killed. This, along with the whopping 10 seeds produced by recovering the Bulborb's body to the onion, means you now have a total of 27 Pikmin.

However, something else catches your eye. You're quite hungry, and seeing the Pikmin so greedily devour the corpses of your enemies is making you feel hungry in a strangely sympathetic way. Not that you're going to eat meat any time soon... but there is something. Nearby the Bulborb nest are several large fruits- which when brought back to the ship are squeezed and pressed in its cargo hoard to produce emergency rations! Maybe not the most nutritious meal, but you'll need this energy. Beyond just finding your ship parts, you'll need to find some food to survive as well. Currently, you have about 3 days worth of rations.

At the end of the day, you organize your Pikmin and approach the ship's computer. It's quite heavy, made of deep space metals and electrical components, and ended up taking 20 Pikmin to carry. Amazingly, the Pikmin crowd around the computer and gently lift it up together, showing great strength when they use teamwork, and began to slowly bring it back to your camp. The ship part is brought back to the ship and the ship is partially repaired!

“Hello, Captain Jay. Thank you for restoring my functionality. I will now run a diagnostic report...”

The computer does a quick damage check, and tells you the numbers.
>>
”Now that you have collected myself- there are Six more vital ship components you must aquire before you can safely return home. Sensor readings indicate possible locations- I'll put them up now.”

Because your ship broke apart in orbit- your parts are scattered over a great geographical area on this planet, being in several distinct regions. You can only visit one region per day, as it takes a few hours for the ship to fly to each region without a warp drive- you should probably let the autopilot do it while you get some rest. The Pikmin's onion follows you wherever you go it seems, as long as you remain in the planet's orbit...

As for the next area to visit- you have several choices.

The first is a region you are calling Fire Alley. Mountainous region with great geological activity- it seems much hotter then neighboring places. Given the Pikmin's immunity to fire, this seems like a logical first place to explore.

The next is the Lush Expanse. Basically a jungle, the area is extremely dense in foliage and lifeforms. You suspect a great amount of food will be there and excellent biodiversity- but this could also mean an excess of hungry predators. Might want to wait on this region until you have a true army of pikmin.

The third is the Blue Bay. Situated by the water, this region is strangely beautiful. However, given the signal is just on the coast (luckily not at the bottom of the ocean), there is a decent chance that the part you need is in a tide pool or underwater somewhere... which would render your chances of survival moot.

The fourth and final region is the Singing Zone. Mysterious and arid, this desert region is notable for the strangely musical “noise” it seems to produce, similar to singing or chimes. There seems to be a great amount of magnetic activity here as well, causing your ship's electrical systems to go wild.

All of them have a part- so which location should you touch down on for the next day?

I had an idea. As pikmin mature as they age (reaching adulthood in just shy of 6 hours), what if we took some immature pikmin with us in our ship. If they require daylight to grow, all it would take would be to fly our ship and tilt its window to the direction of the sun so they can soak up that sweet sunny D.

I'm assuming its not night time yet, so go ahead and collect more pellets, kill more predators, and harvest more nectar. We might as well make the best of today before the next day comes. Plus we need to pluck those rooted pikmin before we leave!

DAY 3
You decide to head to Fire Alley for today. The hot and inhospitable biome would normally make you pause- but with your spacesuit and the Pikmin's apparent invulnerability to heat, you decide its the next course of action.

Traveling to the zone, you touch down along with the Onion. It pops out its tripod legs and stands ready; and you find it very easy to call out the Pikmin once again. With your 27 Pikmin in tow, you find yourself feeling the pressure of both time to find your parts, and time to find supplies. It's time to put in work.

In this alien environment, it's curious how hot and active this region is. You assume it has something to do with geological activity- every which way there is a powerful geyser that shoots flame. Small cracks in the rock show what appears to be molten magma just underneath, and in a place that doesn't seem very rich with plant or animal life...

The larger forms of life you find here are large, ugly gray skinned creatures you are tentatively calling Blowhogs. When you get close to one, it rears up and somehow manages to emit a breath of fierce fire out of its long trunk! Your suit can absorb quite a bit of heat- but that still was too close for comfort. But when you order your Pikmin to attack- you find the Blowhogs totally unable to even harm the fireproof creatures. You easily hunt the creature and bring it back to the onion to produce more Pikmin- eight more in fact. You decide to leave these ones in the ground to see if you can make them into flowers.

However, a much more suitable discovery happens a bit later while searching for your missing ship part. The misshapen lump in the ground which you assumed was an odd plant, suddenly comes to life and springs up into the air- before three tripodal legs snap out from underneath it. It's an Onion! A bright green onion!
>>
The onion spits out a singe solitary seed- perhaps a survival mechanism to avoid total extinction of its worker population by keeping one in reserve. At first, you're worried that the Pikmin you have, which are red, may decide to fight this new Pikmin- after all, they must be different subspecies. But your fears subside when the Pikmin seem... excited when you go to pull out the newly sown Pikmin.

Pulling it out, you are met with an alarming sight.

It's a Pikmin- but Green. This also confirms your theory from before- there are multiple different Pikmin subspecies. You hearby dug this type of Pikmin a Green Pikmin- where as your original Pikmin you will now be calling Red Pikmine.

Taking a closer look- you see the differences between this type of Pikmin and your original. Beyond the color- Green Pikmin appear a bit smaller and weaker then Red Pikmin. Their eyes are also different, more alien and insectoid. Most interestingly is their arms and legs; instead of short arms ended with protohands and simple feet, these Pikmin instead have long tentacles for arms and legs- giving them a gangly appearance. Given on of these tentacles a gentle pull, you also note how stretchy and pliable these hands are, and the way it creepily wraps around your hand- they are also prehensile.

This Pikmin, like all the others, is totally calm and at peace in your presence- and doesn't show any sign of being aggressive. Indeed, with a little blow of the whistle, you can direct it to do as you will, just as with the reds.

With only a little imagination, you can already the value of these green pikmin. Their bodies can actually stretch; your AI confirms that a group of them could form into bridges or extend into ladders that other pikmin could climb on- a trait that some eusocial insects share. Fascinating!

But you only have one green pikmin for now. What should you spend the rest of this day doing?

You decide to spend the rest of the day growing out the Green Pikmin population. The green pikmin are a fascinating new addition to your army; even if there isn't much food here for them, you can't just leave yourself just one.

As you gather up all the nearby creatures and foliage to bring back to the green onion, you notice something strange. While your red pikmin are obviously much better suited to hunting the Blowhogs, you decide to throw a green pikmin on one of their backs to test their capabilities... and are shocked and horrified by what you see.

The Green Pikmin is a parasite! Its long tendrils can pierce through skin- the blowhogs thick and wrinkled skin can't keep it out. This also has the secondary effect of making Green Pikmin basically impossible to shake off- but you get the feeling that a creature with a thick shell, carapace, or any of the biomechnical creatures that seem to exist on this planet like the onions themselves will likely be totally immune to the Green Pikmin's attacks...

The blowhog, unable to even shake off the parasite pikmin, succumbs to it eventually, being drained away. The Green Pikmin that you threw onto its back also sprouts a bud now- it seems they don't drink honey to power their metamorphsis. When you allow the green pikmin you have to bring it to the green onion to produce seeds, you notice a few less seeds were produced this time. Looks like the selfish green pikmin sucked out some vital nutrients when it did its work.

Despite how alien and strange they are; you hope these green pikmin will be a useful asset to you. You'll just have to double and triple check your suit's valves before you touch one next time.

You spend the day gathering as much safe material as you can to grow out the Green Pikmin population; mostly by using the Red Pikmin to close up the spitting fire vents and taking care of the dangerous fire-breathing blowhogs.

You now have 20 Green Pikmin and 35 Red Pikmin.
>>
While you didn't have enough time to get a ship part as well as grow out your pikmin- you did manage to find one other thing- a cavern.

Worn by natural action of geological activity and water erosion, the caves beneath Fire Alley are relatively deep. The entrance to the cavern has a trickling stream of mineral water flowing into the earth- the smell of brimstone in the air- if you could smell past your suit's filters. You consult your ship AI and both of you come to the same conclusion- because your ship blew up in the atmosphere, all of your ship parts will be on the surface of the planet- falling from the sky into a field or mountain crevice at worst. What this means is caverns will have nothing to do with repairing your ship.

However, even a cursory glance at your sensors indicate that deep beneath the planet's surface there is a great deal of radioactive material and high energy readings. Your intuition also tells you that these caverns and cave could hold a wealth of very rare mineral deposits or other valuable objects. It sounds like pure greed but, valuable treasures or things that inadvertently help your survival. Given how there is more then one species of Pikmin you've found so far, and so diverse of a species, there could even be a chance of subterranean Pikmin found down there. However, these caverns will be significantly more dangerous then the surface; and with the added negative of not being able to return easily to the onion. In other words, these are like dungeons- you will have to prepare your forces carefully in advance and make your way all the way through without stopping, and it will take a full day to plumb one's depths. In other words, if you have a spare day, these optional caverns could be worth exploring.

You dub this cavern the Mineral Pools, given the great deal of moisture you detect down there, no doubt the source of the various steam geysers on the surface.

Now its time to decide what to do tomorrow.

Note- If a majority of people want to move locations, then you will, otherwise it will default to return to the same location until you recover the ship part at that location.

DAY 4
After drinking your breakfast, you only have one day ration's left after today. Better get this ship part today then.

Travelling down the paths of the Fire Alley with your Red and Green Pikmin in tow, you clear past several dangers with the red pikmin standing out in front to deal with anything burning. Sadly the landscape here doesn't seem suited for the green pikmin- the rocks are burning hot and there isn't much flora to climb up, so instead you walk until you reach a more open area where you can get a good look around- and then you spot it.

Up ahead is a ship part. This one is the Impulse Drive- an important piece of equipment that lets the ship make more precise maneuvers in space; absolutely vital for docking the spaceship and dodging asteroids. All of your landings on this planet have been a bit dodgy without it; so you'd be very glad to have it back.

However, it is guarded by a powerful beast. Even from a distance, the large spider-like monster looks like a great threat. You will name it the Beady Long Legs- a spider of seemingly biomechanical body with large stomping feet. You can already tell that its weak spot, its central orb, is pretty far up and hard to hit even with a good pikmin throw.

Because you know where this part is, and what guards it, you are always free to leave and come back later if you think you can't handle whatever foe you encounter here. While time is of the essence, fighting a monster you aren't ready for could lead to losing a great many pikmin, which would be a shame, or wasting a great deal of time, which would also set you back more then you'd like.

However, if you manage to beat this thing... you'd be one step closer to repairing your ship. Including your AI that means you need to recover seven parts total, six left, and with twenty one days total that means you have a good three days per part- which means getting this part now would put a good deal ahead of schedule.

>Charge the monster with all your Pikmin
>Fight the monster with a small squad of flower pikmin
>Leave and come back another time (you will spend the rest of the day fully mapping this region and growing your pikmin instead)
>>
>>5407893
>>Fight the monster with a small squad of flower pikmin
We'll start the fight by strategically placing green leeches. Then, our cream of the crop red pikmins will help defeat it.
>>
Can our green pikmin climb?

Maybe we could lure it into a spot with our red pikmin by kiting it back, and once it’s in the right spot the green pikmin leap onto it.
>>
According to >>5407096 green pikmin won't be much help here so

>>
>>5407893
>Fight the monster with a small squad of flower pikmin
First see if it's possible to lure it away to a more suitable area that's not on fire so we can throw some green pikmin at its weakspot. If we can safely throw our green boys without risk of them burning, then we'll be able to simply wait things out safely until they finish draining it.
>>
>>5407893

QM, Is there a safe route to the beast for greens?

I'm thinking we use the greens ability to form bridges to tie the legs of the beast together and topple it, then swarm it's core body with reds. No idea if the greens can handle the forces of course.

If we can't get greens in there then yeah, we should retreat for now and come back with a Pikmin subspecies better suited for the job, preferably something able to avoid/endure the hot ground and easily reach the core body. Or somehow endure the heavy slams of the beast.

OH OH OH! If the red pikmin are fire proof, could they get clogged in those heat vents then get launched at the Long Leggy monster?
>>
Rolled 2, 4 = 6 (2d6)

Dice Roll = how many Red then Green Pikmin you lost

You decide to engage the Beady Long-Legs with a small squad of Pikmin, hopefully keeping causalities down.

>>5408380
Not a terrible idea but- if you block up the fire vents then the pressure couldn't escape. It could push the Pikmin out and blast them up but- how could you be sure to angle their ascent? Or what if the whole gets so blocked up it explodes??? You know reds are fireproof but are they... explosion proof too? Still, with that said, it's hard to reach the central orb...

Using a mix of Green and Red flower pikmin- you decide to try and tangle up the Beady's legs... with limited success. However, only taking a small squad was definitely the right choice- if you had your whole army here those stomping legs would inevitably make causalities. Using your Pikmin's quickness, you can avoid most of them getting crushed. Sadly, the Green Pikmin can't seem to get their tendrils into this monster's thick alloy-like skin, but they can hold onto its legs and gently weigh it down. Even with your best throws, getting your red pikmin up to the central orb is difficult, meaning you have to wait for the right opportunity. Because your Pikmin can't easily reach the orb, the resulting battle takes an entire day of slowly weakening the Arachnorb until it finally dies.

But once it does- you recover your part! Carrying it back to base, you have it brought back into your ship, completing another step in the process. Only 5 more parts to go!

However, there is only a short time left until nightfall on this day. As you stand there in the circle made by your ship, the onions, and your Pikmin; they look at you expectantly. You feel like cause for celebration, but the pikmin are just... waiting. Like expecting another command. Do they never take a break? Could you find some way to reward them for their efforts? It's not like you have much food to spare- and you don't think there is much nectar in a place like this.

What do you think? Do you think the Pikmin should be rewarded and praised for what they do? Or is this just part of their programming- dutifully following their leader?
>Praise Pikmin and give them a rest

"Alright everyone. Feel free to take a break."

It's less then an hour before nightfall. You are back in the circle made up by your ship and the onions; the whole mass of your pikmin now standing here in front of you, in rapt attention, no moving. Not saying anything.

You now have the very strange and unenviable position of trying to get these creatures to relax. If you can. You start by trying to dismiss them; but when a Pikmin is alone and without a task they just... wither and lose their color, wilting like a sad flower. They whimper. You feel bad every time that happens, so you call them back, and they return to staring at you.

You're still pretty sure they can't talk, at least if they can, none have said anything. They just watch. Wait and watch. Waiting for the next command, almost as if they were a computer. But even your ship AI goes into states of dormancy when waiting its next command, or performs automatic maintenance- even a computer has more autonomy then a pikmin.

"Maybe lay down? Or play some games with each other?"

You drink some more of your juice rations for today- while the Pikmin watch you, their flowers and leaves blowing in the wind. You feel a bit guilty, you're basically just eating in front of them, but they don't seem to mind at all. You start to consider- should you teach them how to play a game? Like tag? Or how to dance?

It was about then, just before the twilight, that the Pikmin began to sing.

>>
With the new part in tow, you return to the atmosphere followed by your onions.

Because you acquired the Impulse Drive, your ship is now much easier to fly in the atmosphere of the planet. Takeoffs didn't matter much for it- but the maneuverability is like night and day. In addition- you now feel much safer landing with the drive, which will make landing in more precarious places easier. You now feel safe enough to make a landing in another region of the planet which houses one of your necessary ship parts- the Dreary Heights, a very depressingly gray mountainous region with precarious ledges everywhere. In other words, some ship parts may improve the capabilities of your ship.

With the part gathered from Fire Alley, you no longer need to go there- though there is still the underground mineral cave which could house some interesting secrets. Now you must choose a new place to embark; soon you will be on your last day of food, so wherever you go you better plan to find some food there.

DAY 5
Drinking what little of your juice is left- you now know the severity of your situation. You are now officially out of food. Driven by this, and for your desire to continue your progress, you decide to go to the Lush Expanse.

Touching down, you explore and scour the immediate area of the expanse. True to its name, it is lush. Very rich in both plant and animal life- this place is a far cry from the bleak sterile canyon of Fire Alley.

Even just establishing your first beachhead and camp you can't help but stumble on the spoils of this place. With only a little effort and dispatching of a few small beetle-like creatures that can unfortunately still bite a Pikmin in half- you call them Sheargrubs- you find a fruit!

This Sunseed Berry is brought back to your ship with ease and quickly squeezed of its juice. You gain three days rations with little effort- if this is a sign to go by, the rest of this zone should be equally verdant. But you should watch out for hungry predators who have gotten large on the riches here...

It is still early in the day. Nearby your landing site, you find an unusual thing; another wall, but this one made of some strange, flat, transparent crystal... no wait, that's glass. Strange. It doesn't really seem naturally occurring. Similar to the biomechnical creatures and a few of the other large objects you've found on this planet- these are like anomalies... or artifacts from an intelligent species?

The glass wall frustrates all attempts to break it with your normal pikmin; even green pikmin tendrils can't get a grip on its polished smooth surface. But just beyond the wall you can see another verdant garden; and a massive fruit waiting for you. But there's no way for you to break this wall; and despite how close the garden is, you know it will take you an entire full day to get over to this side garden and back again with the spoils- gaining limited information and progress towards the next ship part.

You're free to ignore this side garden for now and come back later; or you could put the priority of a sure meal over exploring the rest of this area for potential ones. Plus, you know your part is out here somewhere, likely guarded by another giant monster knowing your luck...

^Number of Red then Green Pikmin Lost

Strangely enough; the Pikmin actually have some kind of... sense of direction here. Not exactly leading the way, but they seem to turn to stare off into space, their petals and leaves bending as though twisting in an invisible wind; like a flower turning to face the sun.

You travel through the Lush Expanse, following the Pikmin's signs. Unlike Fire Alley, this place is quite sprawling and open, meaning it would probably take a full day just to map it out... but you can make a little progress on that as the Pikmin lead you on towards an unknown location.

Thankfully, having your Green Pikmin make travelling this place a lot easier then it could be! The Greens can form body-bridges to connect vertical tree branches- literal living climbing platforms for you and the Pikmin. Perfect for this location.

However, not everything is easy. Along the way, you come across a few large flowers planted in the ground- but when you pass by one, a massive beast comes directly out of the ground! The flower was a fake! The monster, which you dub the Creeping Chrysanthemum. Taken totally by surprise, several of your Pikmin are sadly gobbled up before you can do much at all. Thankfully, you defeat the monster and its body can be used to recoup some of the Pikmin losses you suffered...

But finally, about midday, you come across what your Pikmin were leading you towards. There is a small pool of water with an onion half submerged- you are quite worried- no Pikmin you've seen before can swim, so if the onion is there you can't exactly feed any food to produce more pikmin seeds- you dismiss your Red and Green Pikmin to get closer.

The blue Onion rises up in the water once you approach; just like every other Onion so far. You've found yet another new Pikmin subspecies- these are Blue Pikmin, and once you pluck one out of the wet soil beneath the pond- it is confirmed that they can breathe in the water!

Blue Pikmin are obviously suited for the water. Most notably, they have an open "mouth"- but before you can worry about them talking or biting anything, you notice quickly that its more of a gill-organ, gently filtering water that enters their mouth. On top of this, they have webbed hands and feet, and their body is even more smooth then other Pikmin.

Blue Pikmin can swim, and seem aware of the weakness of other Pikmin- when you place them near the shore, they help other Pikmin back out of the water before they drown. Hesitantly, you want to bring the aquatic pikmin species out of the water to see its capabilities on land... and it's surprisingly capable.

While not special, the Blue Pikmin are capable of walking and running just like any other Pikmin- on land and in the water. Their bodies are also covered with a slight mucus to keep them moist even outside of water, which makes sense given their amphibious nature. You also get the feeling this mucus might protect them slightly from stomach acids and let them slip out of the grip of larger monsters- meaning that blue pikmin are slippery and can survive creature attacks a little better then other Pikmin types.

With Blue Pikmin in tow, you now see how many opportunities have opened up for you. Every area on this planet so far has had small pools and streams of water here and there- even though you could make due without Blues, just having the ability to hunt aquatic creatures and the ability to help carry things through water it a huge help! Even better, the fact you found Blue Pikmin here in the lush expanse makes populating them easier. You grow a quick 30 blues from the nearby food stuffs; and find yourself with a few hours of daylight left this day. What should you focus on?

With your new Blue Pikmin in tow; you scour the nearby area in an attempt to grow your Pikmin numbers.

You find some pellets and a few weakers creatures that are easily consumed by the Pikmin, their bodies brought back to the onions. The wealth of small creatures here leads to a rapid pace of growing- helping you really fill out your Pikmin army. Over the next few hours, your Pikmin numbers swell to 50 each of Red, Green, and Blue Pikmin; giving you a sizeable force. However, something happens about halfway through- your AI reports the number of Pikmin in the field being exactly 100 when the onion stops spitting out seeds. Even when being fed, it just stops. You order the pikmin to stop bringing the onion food- but the number of pikmin within has increased even when the ship refused to spit out more seeds. Strange. No matter how hard you try, you can't get the onion to relinquish any more Pikmin. The blue, green, and red onions all follow the same rule. Strangely enough, it isn't the number of individual color, but all colors combined. You can't exceed 100! How is this possible? And why such a specific number?

You have the theory that perhaps the Pikmin numbers are limited by the onions to prevent overpopulation. Since Pikmin don't eat or suffer from hunger on their own; they could strip the natural world of all its resources if they became overpopulated, so this is a way to prevent that. But why would all the colors of pikmin consent to that collectively? Wouldn't each subspecies have an evolutionary advantage in allowing their numbers to bulge out more then the others? Could the onions only be giving a limited number of pikmin to one leader or... being at a time to prevent them from becoming too powerful? The onions themselves aren't very large; you aren't even sure how they store all the pikmin that climb within them each night- further increasing the need to let pikmin get out of the onion, not limiting their total numbers in the area at once. Perhaps the pikmin are turned into something else within the onions- are they liquefied? Or perhaps each pikmin isn't an individual, but a sort of independent appendage of an onion that is the organism they come from. This would explain why a limit would exist- its the maximum amount of its "body" it wants to expose to the world at once. But how does that explain the pikmin's apparent individuality?

But perhaps your wild theories and speculations are meaningless. Even with Hocotatians advanced technology, some things in the universe are still unexplained. It may be that some things defy explanation- that they just "are" and can only be experienced instead of understood...

DAY 6
You touch back down in the Lush Expanse again today to work on finding your next ship part. Almost immediately after you leave your camp with a nice mix of pikmin- you are attacked.

This creature is another Bulborb- but a different subspecies. With a long snout and whip-like tongue, it can devour pikmin from a distance. A few stragglers are already picked off by the time you notice, their screams silent as the creatures slurps them into its jaw. Unlike the other Bulborb, this one isn't sleeping and can't be taken by surprise, and its range with that long tongue is longer then you can throw a pikmin with your arm.

What's the strategy to beat this monster? If you do it right, you can minimize the number of pikmin you lose to it.

>Write In
>>
>>5410208
Test out a theory. It's tongue looks long, but is long enough to reach behind it's back? We'll find out soon enough.
Keep all leaf and bud pikmin out of this fight, and take only the flower ones. No more than 15 reds and 10 greens.

Command the red's to run around to draw the tongue Bulborb's attention so we can flank with the green pikmin. We'll get behind it, then start throwing all the green lads on it's back. If we're feeling confident in the strength of our throwing arm, try targeting the eyes since they look like weak spots, else keep your aim on the back.

Unless this thing is smart enough to try and roll over to crush the pikmin, it should die eventually, and I doubt it's tongue is strong enough to pull the green pickers off it's back.

When we have all our green boys in place, command all pikmin to keep their distance until it dies.

When it dies, try and see if you can get a blue pikmin to crawl into it's stomach (acid resistance) and see if they can pull any of the few pikmin the Bulborb ate before they're fully digested. No one left behind!

Number of Blue Pikmin Lost^
Using your Blue Pikmin as bait- you trick the beast into exposing its back to you. However due to your high Pikmin empathy level- you feel quite bad about it... You just hope they can get away from that tongue in time. It's quick, and despite your best efforts, a few are still slurped up...

The green pikmin you throw onto the creature's back dig their tendrils in and begin to drain the Bulborb of its most vital fluids and minerals; while it thrashes in a rage and probably a horrible itch; it can't bend its tongue back enough to pull the greens off itself, impotently trying to shake the Pikmin off!

Using this, you can move the rest of your pikmin away and wait for nature to run its course. It seems the hit and run strategy of using the greens works well... it just takes a long time. You're noticing a big difference between the Pikmin in terms of their attack power and aggression levels. The greens may be horrible little parasite buggers, but reds are much more aggressive and took down the first spotty bulborb you faced much faster- it seems the trade off for using your greens this way is a very slow process...

After several hours, the Whiptongue Bulborb is weak enough to be taken down safely- your Pikmin pull its body down to the ground. Taking stock of your Pikmin numbers, it appears your intuition was correct on the Blue Pikmin being slippery and hard to catch- only a small amount were scooped up by its tongue, as a few who were licked managed to slip away before being consumed. Sadly, the greens took long enough to kill the Whiptongue that any pikmin who may have been inside this creature's stomach had sadly been totally digested. You give the Whiptongue's corpse of the Blue Pikmin in honor of their sacrifice and because you have a funny feeling you'll be needing more of them later...

You spend the rest of the day mapping out and explore the Lush Expanse and finally, after almost two days of searching, come across your ship part! It's the Graviton Core, and incredible useful device needed to generate and control the intense gravitational forces used when you hit warp speed. This is another necessary ship part to make your journey back home.

While you don't think you have time to carry it back home today; a cautionary attempt to see how heavy it is doesn't go so well. Even your AI seems distraut by the news; the Graviton Core is so heavy it will take one hundred and twenty pikmin to carry it away! I know we’re obviously meant to find Brawny Pikmin, but could we not devise a mechanical solution, like levers and rollers, to increase the force an individual Pikmin could apply?
>>
>>5410740
I, too, would like to try this.

>>5410739
If it's not allowed, perhaps precluded by the Pikmin's simple intellect, maybe we can return to the Fire Ally area to check that dungeon which was heavily hinted to hoyse mystery-Pikmin?
>>
>>5410747

I'd be game for a dungeon run, might luck out and find some food even.

Alternatively Blue Bay might be a smart choice, lush enough for food, probably a new pikmin type, and of course a part is somewhere down there.

>Blue Bay
We have the Blue Pikmin to allow us to explore it; and it looks like the purple Onion is hiding there. If these Purples are the same as game purples, they're the strong ones we'll need to carry back the Graviton core, and perhaps the heavy ones we'll want to shatter that glass barrier by throwing them at it.

^Number of Days to the time limit added

DAY 7
Landing in the Blue Bay, the salty air and fog from the nearby water is blown away by your ship's exhaust fumes as you land on the soft, wet earth. In fact, the moment you touch down, your ship sinks a bit into the mud, tilting on its side.

From the moment you set up camp with the onions; you can already see something in the water out there- it's your ship part of this area! Unlike other areas, where they were far away and guarded, this one was right here- just off the shore in the water. As long as you have blue pikmin, it's easy enough to go out there and pick it up!

The ship part is quickly recovered just a few hours after sunrise and put back into the ship. It's the Filtration Matrix, used to purge toxic contaminants from the engine and refine starship fuel before it enters the reactor core... wait a second, this could help you purify your own air filters. It isn't enough to fully repair them, nor is it a permanent solution, but replacing your ship's basic air filters with these and plugging your suit in to remove its toxic containment, the filtration matrix grants you an additional number of days to your time limit!

...Huh, that was fast. Still, you already took the time to fly out here and touch down, so going back up now would be a waste of today. Surely you can find something to occupy your time.

You decide to explore the land. While exploring the water could lead to some very interesting discoveries, and given the fact you have plenty of water pikmin now- you feel there is probably more fruit on land plus other things that will help you... like another onion.

This time you had a pretty good feeling you'd find one from the way your Pikmin seemed to be trying to lead you over here. Behind some rocks near the shore, you find a purple onion. After a while, you go to pluck the Pikmin from the soil before finding yourself nearly tripping from the unexpected weight. Taking both hands; you manage to pull a real big one free.

These are Purple Pikmin. The first thing you notice is their size and weight; bigger then any other type of Pikmin and much heavier. You can barely throw them. They also take a lot more resources to grow then other types of Pikmin. Normally, the onion spits out two seeds for a small pellet of its color, or one seed for the pellet of any other color. But for purples, one purple pellet only gives one seed, and it takes two or three pellets of other colors to spit out an extra seed. You estimate it takes roughly two and a half times as much food to produce purple pikmin seeds then normal pikmin. On top of that, they're pretty slow even with flowers- given how large they are.

But of course; as with all Pikmin, they have a unique advantage. Purple Pikmin are especially well developed in their lower body and back, and are so heavy and strong that they can carry as much as five other pikmin put together; they are roughly five times as strong as a normal pikmin.

While the number of Purple Pikmin you will have will be invariably less then the other pikmin types, you get the feeling they'll be pretty useful when you do need to use them. You also feel that glimmer of hope again- you can now recover that Graviton Core that was impossibly heavy before, and you'd only need a handful of purple pikmin to do it!

While scavenging for food for the newfound purple pikmin and searching the beaches in this area; you come across a common creature here. Known as the Wollywog, this amphibious monster always stays near bodies of water but aggressively guards its territory. It can't move very quickly and doesn't bite, but it can 'hop' up into the air and stay there, levitating in place before slamming back down again and crushing any pikmin unfortunate enough to be underneath it. Even worse, green pikmin can't reliably drain it to death, because the Wollywog will retreat to the water when threatened; in which case the green pikmin will be washed off and drown...

There are more of these Wollywogs around; and you're going to need a lot of food to get a sizable amount of purple pikmin. What's your plan to take these creatures out?

Attack with red and purple pikmin, when the bullywog tries to flees, send in the blues to finish it off.
Keep the green on reserve since they aren't useful in this fight so we won't need to micromanage so many units.
>>

>Just avoid them (waste tomorrow to get enough Purples for your needs)
Thanks to the filter, we have some extra time. Let's not risk Pikmin lives unnecessarily.

>>
>>5411731
>Wait until they land to swarm them
Keep the greens and blues out of this fight. If it tries to flee and stay in the waters to recover, tell everyone but the blues to stay back so we can swarm it in the waters.
I only ever played pikmin 1, but I think swarming it with some pikmin will keep it grounded for a time. Swarm it for a few second and let it struggle for a bit, before commanding the pikmins to disengage before it knocks them all back and crushes a few when it SLAMS back down.
>>
>>5411842
Huh. Is that the normal tactics in Pikmin 2 and 3?
>>
>>5411731
>Wait until they land to swarm them
Be ready to throw pikmin right atop them when they land as well, let's see what happens when a thrown purple impacts the back of one...
>>

Never really tried it in 2, and purples aren't in 3's main campaign. In the actual games I usually had two strategies.

Low Pop: Toss on the back of the critter, whistle back when it jumps, repeat.

High Pop: Circle behind and SWARRRRRM. Sheer numbers can usually kill before it jumps.

In Pikmin 2 Purples would actually stun enemies with their impact, it was insanely broken, I assume they're not quite that powerful here. I don't actually know if Wollywogs count purples as more for determining if they can jump, but it would make sense.

Waiting until they land to swarm on the Wollywogs seems like a good idea- but after a few seconds they'll always shake off the Pikmin and rise up again. Unless...

Yes, that seems to do the trick. Purple Pikmin are so heavy that they weigh down the Wollywogs- just a few of them can prevent the Wollywog from raising up in the air again for another slam; extra Pikmin are just a bonus to this. The weight of Purple Pikmin seems very good for keeping lightweight enemies pinned down! You figure flying or floating enemies will have a hard time getting away with a purple pikmin on them. With this tactic in mind, you can defeat several more Wollywogs with minimal losses, letting you grow your purple pikmin numbers up to a sizeable level today without issue.

With both your ship part and a new pikmin color added to your roaster, you complete today and return to the atmosphere for nightfall.

You have one day of rations remaining.

Since we have no idea what the Orange Pikmin will end up doing, I think we'll have to hope that Purple-Pikmin's weight will break the barriers, or that we'll find something else to eat somewhere in the zone.

Day 8
Upon landing in the Lush Expanse for the second day, you quickly find a pair of Cupid Grenades; another type of juicy fruit. Each orb is big enough to grant you two units of juice, so you get 4 more days of food. It seems the Lush Expanse is so fecund with plant life that every time you visit here you'll receive an extra random fruit in addition to whatever you have to search for.

With that, you head out towards your part and the glass wall. You know that the hidden garden out of the way will take one full day to reach, but if you can break this wall it will make it quick and easy...

Oof, ouch. Sorry little purple... It looks like even a big purple pikmin wasn't enough to break the glass, just get flattened against it. Darn. You need something much harder, or perhaps explosive, in order to deal with the wall...

You grab the unnaturally heavy Graviton Core using a team of Purple Pikmin with other Pikmin for support. With a long walk back to the ship, you install the core to have the ship powered up yet again. While mostly only useful for takeoffs and deep-space manipulation, the graviton core is essential for protecting yourself from gravity distortions in space and keeping to a high max speed. You'd never make it home without it.

In the meantime, you manage find another large fruit item to juice- the Face Scruncher. This fruit will give you another 5 days worth of rations, currently meaning you have 10 days worth of juice in stock. While boring, today was pretty productive- tomorrow you head to the Singing Desert.

You decide to check out the onion, and there you find yet another Pikmin type. With so many to juggle, you may have to start deciding which to take with you on your expeditions...

These pikmin are unique. They're a bit more bug-like then the others, with an abdomen out their back, compound eyes... and wings?! Yes, it seems orange pikmin can actually fly!

Whenever they take flight, you can hear the low droning of their wings. While not the biggest or strongest, they can move over the ground to avoid predators, or even carry small objects if they work together. You have decided to enter... The Hole.

This is a dungeon. Your entire day will be spent here; as the time spent to explore and come back out of the dungeon requires you be back by nightfall. However, as your computer suggests, dungeons may house the most dangerous types of wildlife on this planet... but also rewards. Rare anomalies, archeological treasures, or even something related to the Pikmin!

As far as you can tell, the Hole is a deep tunnel system depressed in sand. You are unsure of the dangers inside; but your computer reports no excess moisture, heat, or electrical energy. As such, it is likely whatever you encounter down here will be mostly physical in nature.

In order to determine how well you; roll a 1d100 for one Pikmin type. The best roll for each pikmin type will determine how useful they are and what percentage you preserve while in the dungeon.

You descend into The Hole. This dungeon is very deep, dry, with narrow caverns and few features beyond the dangers of navigation. You worry the earth may shift on top of you and bury you alive- the most likely way for you to actually die in your spacesuit that protects you from everything else on this planet so well. If you were actually buried alive... You'd probably just open your suit's helmet and let the sand come in and crush you. Better that then slowly die of dehydration unable to do anything...

Wait, why did you come down here again? For some treasure, not even a ship part? Now you feel kind of stupid. But at the same time; the fact that creatures do make their home down here gives you hope that it is more stable then it appears; and whatever may be down here will be worth it...

Deep within the Hole, you find a true challenge; a huge snavian creature- the Snagrit. You figure that if you were on the surface, this beast would be able to burrow and come up from the soil to attack- but now you are in its domain. These tunnels are of its own making! The snagrit fills each one and could just open its beak to swallow you all whole!

Here, however, you find out something new. The droning noise of your Orange Pikmin can be amplified with numbers. While one is a short range noise, multiple together creates a strong vibration; especially amplified underground! You are capable of repelling the Snagrit with your orange pikmin- letting you navigate the dungeon successfully.

However, do to your rolls... it was a costly journey. Many of your pikmin were picked off on the way down, and some even got lost in a side passage with no way of calling them back... quite a grisly fate for them. Your blue pikmin, who you brought in case of there being a watery hazard down here, become your primary source of creature bait- though you would prefer if you could save them all... though the blues are pretty dehydrated down here anyway. Perhaps its for the best.

Finally, you reach the final chamber. Here, just past the Snagrit's lair, you find a small room with an unusual treasure on a small altar. The treasure of this dungeon are colorful seeds which seem somehow related to the Pikmin. Each is many colored, and smell very sweet- or so your AI tells you from your atmosphere filter data.

Within your ship, you've used your limited space in the cargo hold to store some Pikmin overnight- turning the windows in the ship to this planet's star to let them mature overnight. Now, that space goes to better use growing these unusual new plants. After some urging from a Pikmin, who almost seems to want to "jump in", you find out this species purpose.

These flowers can somehow change one pikmin into a pikmin of another type. Each flower slowly changes colors over time, allowing you to throw in Pikmin and transform them. However, pikmin thrown into this flower come out in seed form, meaning they'll lose their maturity. You so name these flowers Candypop Buds and can now use them to freely transform pikmin of one color to another- you can grow as many pikmin as you want and change their colors freely- the possibility of running out of pikmin, or needing to spend a day or two growing your pikmin's numbers of a depleted color is now in the past.

While not directly helping your survival, you get the feeling a useful find like this flower hints at the sort of things you may find within the various dungeons on this strange, alien planet...

Now with this newfound flexibility; it is also possible to keep an army of one specific Pikmin type around, if you wanted. Do you have one type of Pikmin you favor over the others? Or do you want to keep them more balanced, using the bulbs to average them out?

DAY 11
Seven Rations Remain
You touch back down in the Singing Zone. While raiding the dungeon and finding the Candypop Buds have given you a useful tool, you still don't have your part from the desert here.

You spend this day moving towards it, making sure to look for food in the most likely of places here- the shiny bright red thing you are calling the Insect Condo, due to its highly desirable traits for parasites and pests, is now in your position. Hey- let go of that little red! Heh, that silly pikmin must think that things belongs in the red onion due to its color. We need to get you some nectar to straighten you out! The big red fruit grants an amazing six units of juice for you- granting you six more days rations.

Later in the day, you navigate to the most desolate part of the desert- where your part has been detected. Getting closer, you realize what it is- the incredible amount of static electricity in the air gives it away. It's your Perpetual Dynamo- an electricity generating machine that will grant you nigh-infinite amounts of useful energy! Your ship currently is using its supply of starship fuel and the minimal amount of energy from solar collectors to power itself and your own appliances within- with this, you can finally keep the ship fully lit, warm, and maybe even entertain yourself with some video games while you spend the night in orbit around the planet.

But there's a problem. The dynamo has clearly taken some damage and even now is giving off a massive amount of electrical energy all around it- it will fry anything that comes close! Your own suit warns of potential damage, you can't in good conscious order any pikmin to carry it- they're scared of the arcing electrical energy! None of your pikmin can withstand that kind of current, you reckon.

Oh well- today was a bit of a wash then. You'll have to finish this zone off later...

DAY 12
12 Rations Remain

You have touched down today in the Dreary Heights. This mountainous land is characterized by peaks and valleys high up- with deep ravines and canyons between them. It was too dangerous to touch the ship down here before you got the impulse engines- now you can finally explore this place. And your readings show that one of your parts is surely here.

While you can park your ship here- this place is still somewhat dangerous. There are sheer cliffs everywhere and fog that obscures your view- flying monsters could easily come out of nowhere to attack you or your pikmin. You'll need a good way to navigate using the pikmin you already have. What's your plan?

With the orange pikmin, you can send pikmin to scout and, naturally, are not in any danger of falling. Green Pikmin however can act as bridges- and given how they are small and lightweight- the Orange Pikmin can carry them across gaps and the bridges to help make your way through the Heights!

While a little rickety and worrisome; the green pikmin create a bridge capable of upholding your weight- and if you need to, more could be added to strength the bridge to carry over a ship part too. It's phenomenal!

It's time to look around. What do you want to find?

You decide to investigate and look for another Onion. At this point you've found a new onion, and a new Pikmin subspecies, in every area you've investigated looking for your ship parts. At this point, you'd be more surprised if you didn't find one!

But once again, this raises the question. Why do all these different Pikmin subspecies exist? And why do you keep stumbling upon a new unique one each time? What happens if you were to find another red or blue Pikmin Onion? Would they both follow you, two identical colors, or would they absorb into each other, becoming one? Do the Pikmin tolerate the different subspecies of colors because, together, it increases their chances of survival?

Soon enough, you find a new Onion in the high mountains; a yellow Onion. These Yellow Pikmin are yet another type of Pikmin, and a quick examination reveals their specialities. Firstly, they seem more agile then other pikmin types, and lighter weight- letting them be thrown higher- though it's a far cry from the orange pikmin's ability to fly. Moreso is their sense of balance. Whenever you throw them, they always land on their feet- much like a spacecat.

However, there is a second concern you have for them. You take a small blood (sap? Juice?) sample from one of the yellow Pikmin and your computer instantly detects something. With a much higher then normal concentration of electrical conductors in the blood, your AI predicts these pikmin may have some ability to resist or even be totally immune to electric shocks! That's... pretty much exactly what you needed too- to recover your generator from the singing zone. It's all coming together.

With that, you've gathered six distinct subspecies of Pikmin. That's quite a few, and you get the feeling that with this collection- you can tackle anything this planet can throw at you now.
>>
With your Candypop buds, you can quickly build up your yellow pikmin population without needing to spend all day gathering food for the yellow onion. Perfect! This will make finding the part or food today much easier-

But once again, some native wildlife rears its head to distract you. Far above you comes a new strange creature; looking more like a balloon then a living thing, it's blows a jet of air down at your Pikmin, knocking them aside and even threatening to kill some if they go over the edge- even your flyers aren't immune to be knocked out of the air!

This creature seems very similar to the Fiery Blowhogs you once dealt with in Fire Alley, a sort of distant relative. What type of Pikmin should you use to deal with these?

Question for you Mamuta. Would it be possible to domesticate or tame some of the wild life on this planet? Like the little whip guys that collect nectar, or dwarf Bubborbs? It would be pretty cool to have tanky critter friends. Maybe not too many since then it would be a food issue.
>>
Strangely, it seems out of all your Pikmin, the Green Pikmin have the best resistance to wind- though you're pretty sure if you had some purples with you, their heft would prevent them from getting knocked over to it. The green pikmin sway like saplings against the gale, and as such can stand against it. But they can't reach the monster on their own so...

Using a combination of Greens and Orange, you manage to trap the large blowhogs underneath a "net" of pikmin. Try as they will, the coordinated pikmin can't be blown apart before being dropped and trapping the poor blowhog. You briefly consider trying to domesticate the poor beast, but this one would be too unruly. Something smaller might be better suited to this- like a Honeywisp or dwarf Bulborbs... But then again domestication of a species can take centuries with breeding and training, and you can only survive on this planet for a few more weeks of time. Perhaps with more scientific study, or maybe an even more specialized and rare type of Pikmin it may be possible...

With the blowhogs that roam this area defeated and dealt with- it's easy enough to transverse the mountains of the dreary heights. Tomorrow, you'll have plenty of time...

DAY 13
11 Rations Remain
You return to the Dreary Heights, confident in your abilities and your pikmin. With the Candypop Bulbs in your cargo hold you have quickly equalized your armies of pikmin to give you a great number of yellows- despite only having found the onion yesterday, many flowers as well. You've got the full suite, time to decide how to put them to use.

You decide to explore the dungeon. Here, you find a crevice in the rock with a much deeper internal temperature within then the ambient in the Dreary Heights- leading you to believe there is a great amount of geothermal energy beneath the ground. You take along quite a few reds with some purples, in case you find something too heavy to move on its own, and some green for good measure.

As you explore the dungeon, you encounter a few minor creatures that nonetheless pick off a few pikmin. Individually, one pikmin is no match for the vast majority of creatures on this planet. But at the same time, whenever you command your Pikmin to attack, they can handily destroy even things many, many times bigger and stronger then themselves individually.

The mountain gets warmer, and the walls get brighter and brighter colored- as though the soils are becoming more vibrant the farther down into the fossil record you go.

It makes you think. If one pikmin is weak, but many of them are strong- perhaps even unstoppable with the right mixture of colors- then what is their true role on this planet's ecosystem? What do you think is their purpose here?

Joining the bandwagon. They're just too fuckin weird to be an entirely natural specimen. I can buy the onion being a hammerspace, I can buy the Pikmin "subspecies" being able to understand eachother and work together (they're like ants in a hierarchy made for specific purposes), and I can buy their adaptability and complex mutations. But I can't buy the hyperspecific organisms dedicated solely to Pikmin production and transformation like the candypop buds, or how they lack a Queen or other Pikmin equivalent. We're aliens and they respond to our commands just with a whistle. We've never come across a whistling Pikmin, and the Onion doesn't produce that sound or any other animals we've seen or heard. Also, they're entirely and wholly obedient and have a way to be travel sized via Onion hammerspace. They don't eat food and more importantly DON'T DRINK WATER, yet they're PLANTS. On top of that, there's the arbitrary 100 field limit for any Pikmin at a given time despite them being fully realized individuals. There's just too much weirdness for them to be entirely natural.

As you plumb the depths of the cavern- you encounter several hot and fiery hazards as well as a few underground beasts. But your mind is on another topic- what exactly are the pikmin? They are such unusual creatures. They can't possibly be natural, can they?

Looking at the planet you are on; there are many hints of something else going on here. Unusual biomechanical forms of life, artifacts hidden in caves almost purposefully sculpted, walls made of glass, large metal obelisks halfway buried in the dirt- all hinting that at some point, an intelligent species presided here. Perhaps it was the pikmin themselves, who have since changed to a more feral version of what they once were, or was a totally different species; technologically advanced, these species may have created the pikmin. For what purpose? To be a sort of children of their race when their race went extinct? To act as an ecological cleanup crew? Or perhaps were they a creation made for labor and obedience on a long forgotten terraforming project; only now abandoned? It would explain why they obey you so easily. Of course, are any of these the true answer? That, you do not know.

At the base of the cavern you find another ancient artifact. And this time its a... potato. It looks just so dull and ugly, but the pikmin are mega excited to see it- woahing and posing. They certainly don't want to eat it, and look at you as though they trust you with it. Not that you exactly know what it is for.

With no better recourse and doubtful you could even get a thimble of useful juice from the thing, you decide to bury it in the soft soil of your cargo bay for now. It may take a few days to fully sprout, but until then we shall see...
>>
With the spud recovered and your second dungeon cleared, you return to orbit to decide what you're doing for tomorrow. Any area marked with a green checkmark has had its part recovered, and the orange checkmark means you have explored its dungeon.

SO we went dungeon diving on Dreary Heights and Singing zones but didn't get the parts, The Heights because we didn't look for it and the Singing because we needed the yellow pikmin to pick up the generator.
We got the parts in the Fire Alley, Blue Bay and Lush Expanse but didn't explore the dungeons there.

Day 14
10 Rations Remain
You decide to return to the Lush Expanse for today. Immediately upon returning, you find another small fruit that had bloomed recently; granting you another 3 days worth of rations. Now it's time to tackle that glass wall.

Looking over the construct, you wonder if with the right frequency if your orange pikmin could bust it down. Will certainly within the realm of possibility; you think it may be more prudent to simply fly over it instead...

With the soil here so rich and filled with plant growths, you doubt there is any underground structures to speak of. Instead, you deduce that the optional side area of the Lush Expanse is indeed that walled garden. With your orange pikmin, you can order them to plunder it from safety and without wasting your whole day...

The orange pikmin first bring back the large fruit present in the garden; something you're calling a Slapstick Crescent. The fruit's juice is wrung out and nets you another five units of juice. But the second treasure is slightly more interesting...

It's a type of berry that grows here. The essence inside the berry creates an incredibly spicy substance- the pikmin seem intrigued by it. When sprayed as an aerosol on a pikmin as a test subject, it suddenly lights up with its stem erect and shooting off sparks! The pikmin has entered a sort of state of excited and elevated level of energy and frenzy- including faster attack, movement, and working speed. After gathering all the berries from the garden, you figure you could get a good 3 or 4 sprays over an entire full army of pikmin. If you ever need more, you could just revisit the Lush expanse again.

Now it's time to decide what to spend your next day on. With the parts and side dungeons all in sight within the current time limit; you can choose to tackle this in any order. But you should be careful, you are still missing what you need to locate the final part...

DAY 15
You decide to go to the Singing Desert once again and finally retrieve that dynamo. With your newfound yellow pikmin, you find it easy to do so. Indeed, the yellow Pikmin are capable of chaining an electrical current by touch along themselves, like a living copper wire. The rest of the day is spent scavenging a few more pikmin numbers- no fruit is found unfortunately, but that isn't actually a problem anymore...

That night, you go up into orbit feeling triumphant as you turn the lights on on your spaceship back up to maximum brightness, your juice chilled, and your cabin warmed and toasty. You can afford to turn up all the energy expenses on your ship now with the dynamo's energy supply- and by extension, you can actually run the heating coils and atmospherics extra hot- allowing you to produce an area of heat around the ship that will end up being very useful.

But beyond these small comforts; you've also found something else out. You have now reached a number of rations more then your current days remaining. What this means is that you now longer have to worry about your food supply in the slightest! You're all set for the amount of food you'll need before your time limit is up. On the bright side, you can now use the extra sugar and glucose found in the extra juice and purify it into a thick sappy nectar- perfect for feeding pikmin. You can now be sure all of your pikmin from now on will be flower-type!

In other news; the spud continues to grow in your cargo hold. After about two days, it seems about half way fully grown and ready to be plucked.
>>
With your ship's newfound boundless energy, you can now warm up the area around your landing site and also keep your suit's heating coils extra warm- allowing you to explore much colder places. In other words, acquiring this ship part has increased your ship's capabilities.

This is good; as the final ship part seems to rest somewhere in what you are calling the Planes of Oblivion, an extremely cold tundra. The signal is weak, but it's there for sure.

Now you have to decide what to spend your next day on. After 15 days have passed, you've made it past the half way point of your journey even with the extra allotment from your recovered filter system. You have 14 days left to complete everything you want to before you will be forced to make your final flight from the planet, else you will surely die.

Now, where to today?

You spend the next two days to both pick up the ship part in the Dreary Heights. This ship part is the Radiation Shield. Absolutely vital to deep space transportation, pretty much useless for being on the planet. Well, come to think of it, some of the smaller parts can be used to help improve your suits radiation protection. This planet has a much higher amount of radiation then your own, and the lifeforms here seem adapted to it.

The next day, you decide to go explore the dungeon in Fire Alley; the Mineral Pools, as you had more information on this one then whatever may be in the Blue Bay. As you suspected, the mineral pools have a large amount of moisture and water- leading to you bringing a decent amount of blue pikmin. After a full day of exploration at the bottom of the dungeon, you find a treasure; unusual rocks.

These rocks have an untold amount of geothermal energy locked inside, and with the slightest strike they could be set to explode! Extremely dangerous yes, but also potentially very useful. Your ship AI tells you that you can now lock onto the energy signatures of these bomb rocks in any area you travel to next as a method of preparation, letting you collect a few bomb rocks instead of needing to carry them around all day or within your spaceship which would be needlessly dangerous. You dub them Bomb Rocks.

With the great heaving help of multiple purple pikmin forming a line behind you, you get a good grip before finally managing to pull out... a head? It's like a Pikmin, but way bigger.

The spud was the seed to a pikmin, but not a type you've ever seen before.

Pulling as hard as you can, the purples and yourself manage to free the massive pikmin from the ground before it can finally stand on its own power. Just like you thought, it has gigantism like many of the creatures on this planet. The huge Pikmin is a brown color, giving it a more naturalistic look then the other pikmin who are brightly and unnaturally colored. Could this be what the pikmin once were, but later devolved into smaller, more communal creatures? It seems as obedient as the rest of them at least, fighting something like this doesn't seem fun.

With a bit of testing, you find that the pikmin follows your whistle like the others. It's huge, and very strong- capable of lifting many times more weight then any other pikmin. On top of that, it has thicker skin then all the other pikmin, it's more like a potato spud with hard skin and thick flesh, unlike the other pikmin who are more fruit-like with their squishy bodies and "pikmin juice" within.

The massive Pikmin, who you have dubbed the Spudmin, joins up with your pikmin army as a unique specimen. As it has no onion, you can't send it away at night, so it will have to stay in your ship's cargo hold. It also counts towards your 100 pikmin limit, meaning you have 99 normal pikmin to work with now; not important on its own, but special for showing you that this indeed is another pikmin that follows the rules the others follow. Because of his large size, this pikmin won't be able to follow you into dungeons, but at the same time it's great strength would allow you to defeat... well, pretty much any of the larger creatures of the planet you have fought so far. It can practically wrestle a bulborb to death!

What an interesting treasure to find in a dungeon. How this relates to the greater pikmin mystery? You still do not know...
>>
DAY 18
You have returned to the Blue Bay. Ever since you decided to go back and explore all the dungeons on this planet, you've been doing them one at a time, and this is the last one... before the final area with your final part.

This dungeon is located in a large metal construction, similar to the other leftovers from the ancient (race? species? robots?) on this planet. With all your pikmin types, finding and reaching it was easy. But now, you have to decide what Pikmin to take down into the dungeon.

Your AI pings you two main facts. The first is the place is quite heavy with electrical energy deep below, and the floating constructs center-of-gravity indicates that whatever is at its deepest point is not a single heavy object, like a ship part, but probably a more spread out mass of multiple objects. You won't have to worry too much about retrieval either, as you can just call new colors of pikmin when you leave the dungeon so you won't need them below.

Which Pikmin types should you take with you into this dungeon?

You decide to take a group of mostly Yellow, Blue, and Green Pikmin with you into the dungeon. Blue for any water that may be down here, Green for bridges or anything else you may need, and Yellows to deal with the electrical energy. Out of all of them, you're glad you brought the yellows and blues the most- you're mostly just glad you didn't bring purples, as they could have messed up the weight distribution in the more precarious parts...

Once you've gone through the dungeon, connecting several electric lines with yellow pikmin holding hands, and defeated a few simple enemies- little water dumples that try to take a bite out of your pikmin. Not so fast!

At the bottom of the dungeon, you find the prize. And it's a load of... fruits. Small round fruits, Dusk Pustules, you call them, which are totally useless to you with your current large food overhead. Darn. But on the up side, you did find something else.

These dark berries seem related to the extremely spicy berries you found in the hidden lush garden- but instead, these ones are bitter. The same enzyme is twisted on its head here. By synthesizing it into an aerosol spray, you can now create a large area of extremely bitter, unappetizing spray that will cause larger creatures to be temporarily stunned or even paralyzed as it overloads their senses. Small creatures, like Pikmin, seem to be mostly immune to it. With these berries, you can synthesize a good two or three uses before you'd need to come back to the Blue Bay to restock.

With that, you head back out.
>>
Oh no. This is bad.

You'd think with all your purples, and now with Spudmin, you could just pull the ship out. But it's not working.. why?!

Your return to Blue Bay has apparently impacted the soil in some way. The first day you were stuck in the mud, but today, you're really stuck. You can't lift off. And after spending all day in the dungeon, night is fast approaching. The sun on this planet is going down and you can't take off to take shelter in the atmosphere.

You might need to... defend yourself. For this night. You're worried the Pikmin might abandon you but... the onions aren't lifting off. Spudmin looks at you with anticipation. How are you going to prepare for this night?

Once the sun falls, you are beset by predators!

Your hypothesis about the large creatures on this planet being mostly nocturnal seems to be the case. The many predators and creatures of the planet come active at night; and they are ravenous. Even if you hid all your Pikmin inside the onions and you within your ship, you get the feeling the creatures would still attack- if not out of curiosity, then from the subtle smells of the onions themselves.

You decide to make use of all the types of pikmin available to you- a collection of all the colors with a few less green simple because they aren't fast enough for what you need- a few more red here for offense, some purples for weight, and of course orange for the flying creatures...

Attacked by giant crabs, wallywogs, and large bulborbs now active- you also employ several useful tools you've acquired from the various dungeons. You instruct some orange pikmin to grab some bomb rocks from a nearby deposit while spraying bitter spray on some of the creatures to stun them, while using spicy spray to empower your pikmin. Perhaps the biggest help of all is your Spudmin; huge and indomitable, it acts a bit like a big brother to the other pikmin- preferring to save them from the clutches of the various creatures instead of focusing on pure offense. Perhaps something it inherited from you?

Eventually, mercifully, you manage to hold off the creatures long enough that your ship can free itself with its now-unlimited energy source. The anti-stuck protocol pings you to return a few hours after sundown. You return to the ship, and along with them, the pikmin return to their own onions and you blast off for the rest of the night.

Looking back over your digital map of the planet; you think back on your experiences. You've been to many places and seen many things; recovering all but one of your missing ship parts. You still have a decent amount of time left- about 10 days now- but with everything else completed, only one area still looms.

With that being said; the final area may be the most dangerous yet; given its climate there may not be much food- for yourself or the pikmin. Is there any reason you'd want to return to another area, or is it time to head on to the final area?

+1. Maybe we can try to tame some dwarf bulborgs, and the oranges can try to play a tune to calm the animals. Maybe play some music to see if they can mimic it?

Also take the time to learn about Spudmin. See if its intelligence scaled with its size...there's also the issue of what happens to Spudmin when we find our last part. I dont think atmosphere back home would be healthy for him, so we should find some long term shelter for him. Maybe give him a whistle to teach him how to help the other pikmin? We gotta think long term for our colorful friends.

So there's a ritual I sometimes do as a I leave an area for the last time that might be appropriate here.

Gather up large numbers of prey/pellets, but don't put them in the onions. Shortly before sundown deposit the items, then immediately return all pikmin to their onions. The pikmin can return to the onion before the new pikmin are produced, and a large number of seedlings are planted.

Then simply leave the area behind, confident that the pikmin species has a large backup planted in the ground. Planted pikmin are ignored by (almost) all life on the planet, so they'll be safe until a new captain comes along.

This. This right here. I want to use a green to see if, instead of draining their host, they can merge with their host to become a Bulbmin.
Bulbmin are VERY, VERY resilient to hazards. Baring crushing and explosions they are very hard to kill, although I don't think they could fit in any onions. At most we could maybe see if it's possible for a green to take over it's host, and at most we should try for 3 dwarf Bulborbs, because anymore and we won't be able to fit in our ship.

We can test this theory out by having Spudmin hold down a Dwarf Bulborb and let it do it's thing. If this works, we could potentially do this to asleep fully grown bulborbs, then we can mini boss mob rush whatever boss is in the cold Oblivion place.

DAY 19
You have decided to revisit the Lush expanse once again. The areas bountiful resources and plentiful wildlife (which is more of an asset to your pikmin then a threat due to your grown skill with them) means that this place is perfect to restock- and prepare for any final challenges you may face.

You want this day to be like a day of rest for your pikmin- but you know they don't really respond to... taking a break or taking a day off or anything like that. So you instead occupy them with simple, safe tasks like harvesting pellets or pulling grass. You think your Pikmin need a rest after the big battle last night- your time here has shown you that the Pikmin are at least a little photosynthetic and seemed to get weaker the later it got- giving them a day in the sun would be a good method to restore them.

Just a few moments after you land, you locate yet another fruit. While you have no need for the juice still, you actually find a use for it to use as bait. Perhaps a bit of juice spread as a thin trail on the ground as bait will lead a few creatures to you; and sure enough you manage to catch a few Dwarf Bulborbs for your experiments.

Something about the Green Pikmin has been unnerving and needing more exploration; the way they dig their tendrils into the flesh of their prey instead of ripping them apart and attacking like normal pikmin do. Using Spudmin, you pin down a few dwarf bulborbs here and try to urge the lone green to do something other then simply drain the creature. Much to your shock, the green pikmin seeps its way, totally, into the defenseless creature and then...

The Bulborb quivers, changes, and grows a sprout. It obeys your whistle and comes up to you with no threat. It's not a bulborb anymore; it's a Bulbmin. It seemed the green pikmin have yet another strange talent; their parasitic nature allowing them to take over very small creatures- you're pretty sure this will only work on Dwarf Bulborbs, Sheargrubs, or perhaps the tiny Mitities that you saw in the nest of the Snagrit back in the desert hole...

With some experimentation, you understand better how this Bulbmin works. It's basically a zombie- animated and puppeted by the green pikmin within, who has fused with its nervous system and utterly controls it. The Bulbmin is immune to fire, cold, and lightning, seems immune to pain, and its actually much stronger then a normal pikmin in combat, given that it is technically a dwarf bulborb. However, it cannot carry anything, because it has no arms.

While you know how you feel about your Pikmin and you want to protect them; how do you feel about the Bulbmin? Is it cruel to infest dwarf bulborbs with a parasite this invasive and hideous? Especially when its not even strictly necessary to your survival?

>It's unnecessarily cruel
>>
>>5432025
The reds seem to think that the bulbmin is an oddity. Try and get then to interact more often to discern if this is too cruel and unusual.

Hmmm. Try and get spudmin to hold down a dwarf bulborb, but let's try and take it the old fashion way by lots of petting, scritchy scratches, and maybe feeding it bits of food. See if the bulborb responds too food and juice to and see what happen when its flower fully matures. Can we ride it?
>>
>>5432025
Technically the bulbmin can drag things with their mouths, like that one fat bulborb variant that drags away food.
>>
>>5432025

> Cruel...and creepy too
>>
>>5432203
Seconding this. And let's get some other greens out as well to see how they react to the Bulbmin, see if there's any difference between them and the reds. If the Pikmin act like this is cruel or weird, we will treat it as such; if this is fine to them it will be fine to us. We have Pikmin empathy, our view will be theirs.
>>
>>5432025
>It's cruel, but necessary for now
It's not something I want to make a habit of, but our survival is at stake! We have to get off this rock, and we have no idea what threats are ahead, so more muscle is more better.
>>
While pretty cruel, the advantages may outweigh any petty moral trifles you may feel towards these beings. After all, every time you've faced a Bulborb or Dwarf Bulborb they've tried to eat you or your pikmin without fail, they are your enemy after all. Still, getting totally controlled by a parasite like that is just uncanny; and the Pikmin do it with such casual, natural ease it makes you glad you're not living in the same ecosystem with them...

DAY 20
After your field trip to the Lush Expanse, you head on to your final destination; the Plains of Oblivion.

Totally white and covered with snow, this ominous zone is very cold. The only reason you can land here now is because of the perpetual energy-dynamo you recovered for your ship- it runs hot all day, making the camp nice and warm and giving you a soft, stable spot for the ship and the onions to land on. As for venturing out... you'll have to deal with that when you come to it.

Yesterday, after experimenting with the Bulbmin, you decided to keep one in the cargo hold as a test. It was tricky keeping it seperated from Spudmin- you didn't want any risk of him getting infected or sick, but as it turns out it was unnecessary. The Bulbmin passed that night; it's little shrived body with no Green Pikmin even visible inside anymore. It appears that Green Pikmin infected a host is permanent and irreversible, and the zombie-like Bulbmin use up all of their body's resources and energy before finally dying. Any Bulbmin you make then would have to be temporary- though you haven't tried recycling them through a Candypop Bud- perhaps that might work...

In the meantime, you clear your head. There is no guarantee the final part will be easy to find. It could be buried under 20 days worth of snowfall. The signal it gives off is weak; strange as this final part is the all critical Signal Booster which is the only way to navigate through deep space and communicate with other planets and worlds far away. Even if it was the first part you found you doubt any other space ship could get to you fast enough for a rescue anyway; the fact it is the last part is just a cruel joke.

Now its time to explore this place and master it too. You're stocked up on food and the pikmin numbers swell- with flowers on their heads. You doubt you'll find any more resources here, so make it count.

The others raise fair points.
>>
>>5432773
If it's not too breezy, get some purples, oranges, yellows, red, and just a few greens. The greens we need at most 8 of in case we need a bridge, and we need 2 oranges for every 1 purple. Why I suggest this is because of the same reason we want to teach Spudmin wrestling moves: So pairs of oranges can carry a single purple. Said purple will be dropped from a very high height and deliver devastating elbow drops and belly flops. Yellows for throwing, red for hate crimes, and you know what throw in like at most 10 blues in case they can survive extremely cold waters.

Can your computer confirm if you've landed on a snow covered rock, a glacier, or thin ice? The answer might be important enough to determine if the ship and onions will sink into some waters.

Hmmm. Could we get some Pikmin to compact some snow into ice/snock blocks, then have them stacked around the landing sights to act as a buffer against cold blizzard winds? It'd only be a bonus that we could use said barriers as defenses if we get stuck here at night again.
>>
I'm thinking that the fuzzy albino bulborbs and dwarf bulborbs would exist in this biome as either apex ambush predators and being able to survive the harsh climate. We might be able to get ourselves some fuzzy bulbmins for the next boss fight.
>>
>>5433290

Could we pluck a fuzzy bulborb and make adorable little coats for the pikmin?
>>
>>5433465
I'd be interested, but how would we do that?
That'd be time consuming, but what if we stuffed a green pikmin in an adult fuzzy bulborb? All our pikmin could ride its fussy back to stay warm!

You decide to search for landmarks. To best do this, you need to find an elevated rise to survey the area...

The place is indeed pretty cold. Your suit keeps you well insulated, but the snow is deep enough to make walking slow and difficult. You'll probably only be able to visit one place per day- and even then- you may have to visit your trips away from camp to the warmest few hours of each day for the sake of the pikmin, who already show signs of slowing down in the cold.

Nearby your landing site, you find an elevated dune of snow to stand on and look over the entire Plane of Oblivion at once. Here, you see three main locations of interest.

The first is a large cavernous mouth with a very high radiation reading; your AI tells you this is another dungeon. You weren't expecting one here- but this one seems to be the most energetic and deepest of them all- and probably the most dangerous. However, with your Radiation Shielding part recovered, you can visit this dungeon without fear. Once again, your AI also warns that this dungeon will likely be the hardest and longest one you've faced yet; and will not have any ship parts in its depth. You'd have to be very confident that whatever treasure you'd find down there would be worth the risk.

The second area is a sunken crater; such as where something impacted from orbit. Underneath the snow is a very weak signal from your Signal Booster. This is the location of your final ship part.

The third and final area is a total mystery; a collection of raised snow mounds with objects tucked away. You have no idea what they could be; but your AI informs you that the chance of them being food or feedable to the Pikmin is very low, so this only exists for the sake of curiosity.

You decide to investigate the Mysterious Mounds. Your Pikmin have no attraction to the place, the same way they do to their own onions, so you're fairly certain there is nothing of the sort there...

You spend a few moments baiting out enemy ambush as best you can- using an orange pikmin to carry in another, using them as bait, preparing a force- but it's all quiet. It is merely mounds of the strange snow, it seems. You order the pikmin to dig. Digging through the snow isn't tough work, just slow and makes them fairly cold. Strangely enough, it seems Yellow pikmin are especially good at digging. But as the mounds begin to disappear, you realize that there are objects underneath, covered in snow, which forms the mounds.

Under the mounds are unusual objects. With unusual angels and bright colors, you know these are not naturally formed. These are artifacts, artificial pieces of technology or art created by whatever intelligent race or alien species once visited or lived on this planet. It is impossible to see these and not speculate. What are the purpose of these things? Why were they abandoned? You fear any one of them could be a weapon or time-manipulation device, something that could pose a great threat to you, but at the moment they seem all powered down. All you know is whatever race or being created these things- you have the feeling they must be very wise and powerful people indeed.

You decide to order the pikmin to carry a few of these treasures back to near the campsite. When you leave this planet once you recover your final part... you could take some of these with you. Alien artifacts from PNF-404 are worth a considerable amount of Pokos on your homeworld- not to be too materialistic, but it's the least you can do to get some compensation after being stranded on this alien planet. Perhaps there could be some other value too, some kind of historical or scientific; any one of these mighty and regal artifacts could be the secret origin of the pikmin or the fate that befall this strange, toxic world.

It's already getting too cold for the pikmin too continue. Time to plan for tomorrow.

DAY 21
Sadly, yesterday wasn't very productive. The mounds yielded nothing directly useful to your survival- just unusual artifacts and treasure. Though, then again, you have a few ideas on how to utilize them...

But today you are exploring the dungeon. Likely the final dungeon you will find and explore during your stay on this planet. You've even decided on a name; the Crescendo Cavern. Based on its depth and energy readings, it is likely the deepest and most dangerous dungeon you've gone into yet- you can only hope whatever down here is worth it. Or at least interesting...

You've decided to take a good mix of all Pikmin. Because you can't very well take Spudmin with you AND you can't exactly divide 99 into six equal parts, you decide to just take about 15 of each pikmin type, with a few extras that you think will be most useful in this dangerous dungeon.

Time to delve!
>>
This cavern is truly alien and strange. Energy readings get more and more powerful the deeper you go, and the wildlife most outlandish.

After just an hour or two into the dungeon; a sudden "pop" in front of you draws your attention upwards; a red pikmin is flying! No wait... it's being digested! Some creature appeared out of nowhere and sucked it up!

You manage to rescue the poor red before it is fully digested; but this adds a new complication. These creatures can turn invisible before they strike; ambush predators. And if you're unlikely, could potentially suck up a whole crowd of pikmin- or even yourself- before you even have a chance to react. You need to be careful.

While you don't want to sacrifice pikmin without reason; some will need to be in more danger then others. Which color of Pikmin should you put out ahead of the others just in case you're attacked by more of these Slurkers?

They could still probably be sucked up though.

Greens and Purples seem the best to test - greens because an attacking Slurker is inviting a Parasitic species into its body, Purples because they may simply be too heavy for a sudden 'suck up'.
>>
>>5437872
Greens would probably get digested faster as they would get sucked up in the greatures stomach (greens trying to drink acid), but the purples? Probably might work.

Can the Slurkers suck up purple pikmin? You think since they can suck up more then one at a time, it seems likely. What about greens- parasites from the inside? Orange pikmin can fly- could they also be a way to defend yourself?

As it goes; orange pikmin can't do much damage to the Slurkers before they appear- and purples can be sucked up but are really good at holding them down. Yellow pikmin are also surprisingly capable too- their sensitive ears seem able to detect the Slurkers moments before they strike- perhaps they can even feel the electro-chemical activity of the large jelly-like creatures just before an attack?

But you soon find the correct pikmin to lead the way are the Blue Pikmin. With their slime protecting them, they can't be dissolved fast enough in the creature's stomach. You only lose a small number of pikmin from this encounter.

Up ahead- you find something new. Deep underground here, a new subspecies of the Dwarf Bulborb- these ones white and covered in soft downy fur to adapt to the cold. Looking over your remaining Green Pikmin, you consider creating a few of the unnerving Bulbmin; this would mean losing out on the green pikmin in your army, but you may need them for something up ahead. Do you create some Bulbmin?

Let's avoid these Bulborbs for now. We can come back to them if we find a specific use that'll require Bulbmin.
>>
>>5438651

Haven't tried candypop buds yet...
>>
You use your remaining Green Pikmin, after losing a few to the Slurkers, to get control over the Bulbmin. While it's still revolting to see the way they take over and puppet the bulborb bodies around, it is nature afterall. Sometimes, nature is cruel.

After a few more battles, you reach the deepest floor of the cavern. Here, you feel strangely warm. As though insulated from the cold surface above from many layers of stone; the energy readings here are very strong. Without your advanced radiation and filtration plugs in your suit- you'd get radiation poisoning and die here- though the oxygen still present would probably kill you first...

You enter a large chamber to be greeted by a new creature. Appearing like a large fish on legs, its body also has an unusual metal girdle and what appears to be a plexiglass screen covering its face like a visor. Even stranger is its probiscus, seemingly ending in a barrel. It spots you and, with a mechanical precision, launches a bolt out of its cannon. This is another biomechanical creature- and this one has a gun!

It fires its cannon with ammunition from within its body- always arcing high overhead and aimed at a distance at a high bombardment arc. The explosion hits a small group of pikmin- knocking a few aside and up in the air. On impact, the blast kills a handful of pikmin. Even red pikmin, immune to fire, are killed by the sheer impact alone. Purples do a little better but are easier to get hit- only your Bulbmin can withstand the blast- a direct hit will blow them apart, but their heavier bodies of zombified flesh seem to absorb the blow with the most success.

The worst part is- this creature is ranged. It keeps its distance from you and attacks! What should you do to deal with this threat?

>Charge it with spicy spray
>Attack with just Bulbmin
>Try to sneak up on it by yourself and use bitter spray to stun it

Sweet mother of pearl, a Gatling Groink.

Have the oranges fly high above you in a scattered formation, then charge with the bulbmin and hit this monster with the bitter spray. Then circle it and tear it to shreds.

At least it doesn't have the high ground...
>>
>>5438851
>Other (Write in)
This thing relies on AoE attacks to deal damage rather than direct hits. Have some bulbmins run around and oranges fly around over its head making noise to distract it. We'll sneak up to it to try and stun it with the bitter spray, then hit our army up with the angry red spray to rush it.

>>5438864
That would result in some dead, and there might not even be enough. We got a little less than 15 of those bulbmin?

>>5438876
A gatling what?
>>
>>5438892

A Groink. Look, I didn't name the thing.
>>
>>5438851
>Get the Bulbmin to act as a distraction for the beast; though even they should keep moving to avoid the blasts as much as possible.
>Whilst they're providing the distraction, try to sneak up on it from another angle with a group of Pikmin and attack from behind/latch onto the tail fin.
>>
The creature is dangerous at range; with a powerful cannon almost purpose designed to kill large groups of pikmin. You need to be careful.

You decide to range-find and distract the creature, this Groink, with your Bulbmin. They practically shake off the explosions- though a few are blown apart. Using this as a distraction, you send your orange pikmin to attack. Orange pikmin seem almost like a purpose-built counter to this creature- it has no means to defend itself from flying opponents. Using them until you can get the rest of your pikmin into position; you throw down a bitter spray to stun it and your army charges it, defeating it soundly.

While probably the most dangerous monster you faced yet; you still manage to defeat it and its biomechanical cannon. The treasure of this place is yours!

In the next chamber; an unusual altar holds a small object. It's made of some kind of leather, or maybe plant-fiber, and seems to be the same color of Spudmin, a kind of rich red-brown. More strangely are the familiar symbols on its side.

The moment you touch the object, the pikmin swell around you. Wooh! They cry, happily. You take the object and stretch it out, before placing it on your wrist like a bracelet. Somehow, the pikmin seem to regard you even more strongly as a leader now. While you can't possibly know this now- soon you will find out that your pikmin leadership ability has increased. You can now field 21 more Pikmin then before, for a new maximum total of 121 Pikmin on the field at one time.

All in all; this dungeon was the deepest and most dangerous by far. Aftewards, you lost a decent amount of pikmin- but kept most due to your good tactical decisions and balanced Pikmin army. While you'll lose whatever Bulbmin you have after this; most of the pikmin you brought in will walk out. Good job.
>>
Hmm? You feel a bit odd in this treasure chamber. Is there someone behind-

...

This place is giving you the creeps. It's probably time to leave.

You know is it possible to revisit dungeons? I think we have 1 unit of bitter spray left, or we used it all up.
Is it possible to store the boom rocks in our ships in carefully packaged crates?
>>

DAY 22
You head out from the landing site on the Plain of Oblivion towards the signal of your final ship part- with your army of pikmin.

The bracelet really made the math easier. You can divide your 120 available pikmin into 20 of each color, wit the final slot going to Spudmin. With a pep in their step, the fully balanced army of pikmin sing their song in a low hum as you approach your final ship part.

Up ahead; a field of snow blankets the signal booster. The signal is weak, but supposedly just there under the snow near the center. How do you suppose you should get near it?

>Walk over there yourself
>Order a lone pikmin out as bait- just in case
>Send Spudmin

Actually I'd there are enough bombs around, equip all our orange lads with bombs in case we need to carpet bomb something.
>>
>>5441081
>Order a lone pikmin out as bait- just in case
>>Orange boi w/ bomb
>>
>>5441107
Lets do that, but with 20 green ready to grapple orange boy out of trouble
>>
>>5441343
I cannot visualize this, but it seems hazardous and more liable for us to lose pikmin this way.
>>
>>5441081
I have a question for you is Spudmin capable of throwing a purple pikmin for us? I'm just thinking of the potential we got here. Spudmin's raw size strength, combined with the highly dense and powerful Purple lad? He could probably kill adult Bulborb's in 2-4 hits if he aimed properly.
>>
You decide to send out a lone pikmin to investigate the spot- though an orange pikmin would be the best, due to their ability to fly, yellow pikmin have more sensitive ears and are better at detecting things underground. When the orange flying overhead doesn't trigger anything; you instead send out a daisy chain of orange carrying a yellow with greens to grapple them away in case something goes wrong. Yellow are the most lightweight, so that also helps. In the meanwhile, you divy up the bombrocks you prepared for this located nearby to your orange pikmin as flying bombers. Once the yellow pikmin touches down, nothing happens for a moment until it starts to dig up the place where the part's signal is strongest...
>>
And then, the ground trembles. Your pikmin dash away as the snow blasts apart revealing some terrible beast hibernating just underneath the the snowy crust- a huge hairy beast!

I mean, how could you even describe it? It's like a devil- a snow devil!

Freeing itself from the slush- the creature seems ready to attack the intruders into its territory. You only have a moment to prepare before it is upon you, and the way its eyes shine directly at you, instead of your pikmin, give you a strange feeling that it knows you're leading them somehow. What do you do?

>Bombard with bomb rocks
>Have Spudmin throw purple pikmins

I dont remember us ever finding a secret weapon, but I just gotta know. What is it!
Oh and if the secret weapon doesnt pan out, let Spudmin fucking super sonic yeet some bomb rocks at the monster.
>>
>>5443590
>Deploy the secret weapon
>>
>>5443715
Probably our suit's flamethrower.
>>
The Snow Devil is digging its way out of the snow- a large hairy beast seemingly adapted for the cold. It's also very big- you decide to hold off on throwing your pikmin or bomb rocks at it- and instead use the time to reposition as it digs its way out of the snow to deal with you intruders.

Instead, you decide to deploy your secret weapon.

When you visited the mysterious mounds; you found several artifacts with strange properties. The large cylinder you found was brimming with electrical energy- more then enough to power your entire ship. You came up with a plan to use it like a massive stun gun- purples to carry it and yellows to discharge it safely.

"Charge!"

The pikmin follow your command and the cylinder is ran at the giant monster- hopefully it isn't immune to electricity like the way yellow pikmin are...
>>
When the cylinder makes contact with the monster, it roars in pain and shivers- its been stunned! The electricity of that artifact is extremely powerful- enough to burn some of the beast's fur as it shakes in pain from the electrical discharge.

This is it! The creature is stunned- and there is no doubt about it now. The signal for your final part is moving along with it- it's no longer under the snow. The monster must have swallowed your ship's final part when it landed!

Sorry buddy- if it's your or me, then it's gonna be me! You only have a few seconds to make the most of this before it gets free again, or all the power in the cylinder is depleted. What do you do?

>Charge in w/ Spicy Spray!
>Send in Spudmin!
>Unleash Bombrocks!
>>
>>5444549
>Bananas using the battery idea
YEEEEEEEEESSSSSSS!

>That yellow pikmin at the battery
WITNESSED!

>Unleash Bombrocks!
Wait until we run out of rocks or it breaks the stunlock.

When it breaks the stunlock, order the purples (and the yellow if it survived getting smushed) back before the beast can retaliate, and spray it with the bitter spray to stun it again (you said we had enough juice to synthesis 2 or 3 uses, and we've used 2 so far. I got no clue if we got anymore).
If we do not have anymore bitter spray, then charge with the Spicy Spray, but toggle Spudmin in change with throwing all the purples so he can stun lock the beast with we wail on it.
I think the greens can play a strong part in this fight by being air dropped onto the back of this things and slowly kill it.
>>
>>5444549
>Send in Spudmin!
>>
>>5444553
but....spudmin is significantly smaller than the beast, despite how large he is. What can he do?
>>
>>5444549
>Unleash Bombrocks!
That thing opened its mouth. Tactical mistake.
Dodongo strategy; we feed him enough explosive to burst it open or at least shave it from inside.
>>
>>5444549
>>Send in Spudmin!
>With the sword!
Go hero, defeat the dragon!
>>
>>5444549
>Send in Spudmin!
>>
You decide to send in Spudmin- the largest and strongest pikmin- to take advantage of the situation and attack while the monster is stunned. Because of the electric shock, the snow devil can't coordinate itself to kill Spudmin as he approaches, giving him a chance to climb atop the creature and stab it with his new weapon- the artifact taken from the mysterious mounds! Almost as though made for his hands, Spudmin's sword stabs the beast multiple times in the chest, drawing its blood as its flailing arms fling away and destroy a small group of pikmin that were approaching to swarm the beast.

It's still fighting back; but notably weaker now. Without swarming the monster, you haven't guaranteed its death by using the power of numbers. Now to finish it off.

>Swarm with all pikmin and spicy spray
>Chain it with Green + Purple pikmin to prevent it from escaping through the snow
>Bombrock barrage to finish it off
>>
>>5445260
>>Chain it with Green + Purple pikmin to prevent it from escaping through the snow

>>
>>5445260
>Chain it with Green + Purple pikmin to prevent it from escaping through the snow

>Chain it with Green + Purple pikmin to prevent it from escaping through the snow.

NO ESCAPE.
>>
>>5445260
>Chain it with Green + Purple pikmin to prevent it from escaping through the snow

>>
>>5445260
>Chain it with Green + Purple pikmin to prevent it from escaping through the snow
>>
>>5445382
Also;
>Swarm with all pikmin and spicy spray
>>
You feel yourself closing in on the kill now- you're so well prepared for this battle with all your pikmin, items, and Spudmin's own strength. But the only concern now is if it tries to get away- buries itself under the snow again. You order the green pikmin to grab and chain together, with purple pikmin to hold them with their immense strength. Sure enough, the creature manages to throw Spudmin off and try to dig- but finds it cannot move.

You ready your spicy spray.
>>
You give a blast of the spicy spray over your Pikmin- and especially over Spudmin. With a sudden jolt of energy, the big Pikmin readies his sword and stabs the creature in the throat- its mammalian red blood spilling hot over the cold snow. With a great heave, it finally spits up your prize- the Signal Booster. The final part.

The rest of the Pikmin move in to finish the beast off- making sure its last spasms don't hit you. It is defeated, the Snow Devil is done. You order everyone back to your camp- your precious part in tow.

Soon enough, you return home. Cleaning the gunk off, you find the Pikmin strangely satisfied from the fierce battle; and from accomplishing their goal. They bring the part into your ship- and you can hear the buzz of deep-space signals suddenly hit your long quiet communicator. Your ship can pick up on navigation signals and deep-space transmissions. You can locate where you are now and into the greater universe. All you have to do is turn on your computer and it could easily lead a trail back to Hocotate. Back home. Your ship is fully repaired and operational; you are no longer stranded here. You succeeded in your mission- you are saved.

The Pikmin have never spoken to you, but they always seemed to understand what you wanted- until this. You tell them you are leaving. It's time for you to go. You can't live on this toxic planet. The SS Topaz is back to its full ability, and it's time for your flight.

You pull off the Braclet of Command and find it very elastic- enough to put it on Spudmin's wrist. He looks at it warily. Many of the Pikmin mull around him instead of you- though they don't seem aggressive as though you were a threat to their new "leader", they seem a bit split. You aren't sure what else you can do.

"Come on in the shuttle. I'm going to drop you off somewhere a little warmer before night falls."

With that- you and the onions take a short flight to a more southern hemisphere- going against the planet's rotation- as to gain daylight. By the time you find your destination, you know there will be enough time for them to be ready for night time. You head back to the first place you touched down on this planet- the placid crash landing site. With his sword and braclet, you leave Spudmin as the defacto leader of the Pikmin as you blast off- there is nothing left for you here now.

As you climb higher and higher into deep space, you notice worryingly that the onions you've collected along your journeys are following you. Just like every other night- but you aren't planning on spending your night in low-atmosphere orbit either. They climb into the stratosphere and high atmosphere- and then they stop. Unwilling or unable to go any further. You leave the planet's orbit and into deep space, take one last look, and blast off towards Hocotate. You managed to survive PNF-404, the Pikmin Planet, and are now finally heading home.

Thank you for playing Pikmin Quest! I'd like to apologize for the slow pace, especially at the end there. I guess I ran out of steam as the quest went long, but I'm glad we could finish.

Archive Link- https://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/qstarchive/2022/5405011/

I really enjoy running a planned one-shot like this with a planned beginning, middle, and end- though I felt the "game mechanics" of the quest were a little clumsy. I wanted there to be more of a focus on the Pikmin colors being used and managed strategically, but that video-game mechanic doesn't translate as well to Questing it seems. Still, I'm glad I got to force my fanfiction of what I want Pikmin 4 to be like on you all, lol. I have no plans to continue this quest, but Pikmin is still a ripe universe for exploration one way or another. I hope you enjoyed it too. Tell me what you think if you'd like, otherwise, thanks again for playing and sticking with me all the way to the end.
