''To my grand-nephew. I Albrecht, Archbishop of Libau do hereby summon thee to my seat in the land of Vollingen for I have need of thee. You see since a few years my relation with grandmaster of the knights of the Argent Stars has deteriorated to the point of dysfunction. The land and it's lords are on the brink of civil war. However the both the grandmaster and a local baron have fallen in battle against the savages that still inhabit the hinterlands of this realm for it is still inhabited by the original, primitive inhabitants, primarily human tribes with some orc tribes in lesser number hide in the forests of this realm. This event has allowed me to install a new lord in one of the fiefs. For with the knights at their capital to elect a new grandmaster, I can install a new lord without consulting the local lord commander of the order. I need someone who I can thrust and who can you better thrust than family. I am therefore asking you to come to this land and be landed with an untapped and untamed land''.
signed Albrecht I archbishop of Libau

This was the letter you received three weeks ago and it had come as a surprise to your lord father, and well to your whole family.Your family where minor nobles within the empire of Tautenland. Your granduncle being the only one to be of note, having climbed the ranks of the church of the eleven-fold pantheon. You as a second son where never going to inherent the lands of your father and it was unlikely that you would conquer new lands on your own, the age of warlords has long past and you were expected to lead your live in quietly and comfortably but that has all changed now. The wind breezes trough your hair as your ship courses to its destination of Libau and as the ship flows trough the water you think back to your family and your home.

What part of the empire did you come from?

You came from the march of Fluddenmark, a wooded and marshy realm where few men live and fertile farmland is spare. Your father was a local baron who swore loyalty to the margrave of Fluddenmark, a position the emperors mostly used as bribe towards ambitious nobleman for it was not a rich land, not in minerals nor in men. The only thing that was extracted from there is wood and peat used for fuel in the cities in the west. You still remember the men who worked day and night in the lumber yards as well as the peat fields. Here upon this plain empty borderland you were born. Your father imparted unto you and your brothers much about combat and strategy as befit the guardians of the east he would say.

Speaking of your father and your family what coat of arms do they wear?

Dietrich was your given name and you where proud of it. And as the ship finally reaches it's final destination the city of Libau. The city, which had been founded about 80 years ago was beginning to reach the stature of a true city. The influx of immigrants from your old fatherland and the capital of the merchants who saw opportunity in yet untapped region had transformed this settlement from a mere outpost in the pagan to a true bastion of civilisation. As you set foot on land for the first time in three weeks since your departure from the free city of Mulbrücken. As you looked around you you saw a variety of goods being loaded on and off the ship. Wood, salt, bricks, wheat and another peculiar type of merchandise. A group of greenish figures with tusks, orcs were being loaded on a boat, which considering the heraldry it bore was bound for the place you had taken the boat. You decided to ask one of the men nearby the ship why the where loading such dangerous creatures on board the ship to which he replied. ''Orcs, my good sir have become a valuable good in the more urbanised parts of the world because of the raw strength those creatures has become much needed in many a project of a ambitious lord, bishop or city council. If you ask me it is only right these green savages have raided, pillaged and ruined so many of us who live in civilisation. Those bloody greenies have finally gotten what they deserve I tell you!. Eternal servitude and slavery under the heel of their betters.
How do you feel about orcish slavery?

Of how they would constantly loot and burn various human settlement and how every once in a while one of the green vermin would grow a brain would very rarely overrun and destroy a realm leaving only destruction ruins and half-orcs behind. In short a fundamental threat that must be exterminated, and you where not afraid of sharing it.''I disagree'' you tell the merchant.''The orc is a vile and evil beast that cannot be trusted with even the most basic of task, they backwards savages who can only think about violence and food. It would a kindness both to us and to the rest of the world if we put them to death.'' To this the merchant simply replied''Oh well I do not particulary care about trivialities. Where there is coin to be made I shall be there. In wood, coal, gems leather and all other goods. If I can make profit off it I am quite willing to buy it. But enough about commerce I have not properly introduced myself. I am Filips Welmoed, member of the council of the city of Alfershof in the county of Holrisland. As you can see I am a merchant by trade and I have feeling my good fellow that you while make for an excellent future business contact, even if we have different opinions about the *ahem* matter of orcdom. ''I am Dietrich Von Adlershorst, here one summons of the archbishop of this city.'' You say. ''Ah you are Albrecht's nephew are you?, well from the interactions i have had with him he was a solid business partner and-''. The merchant is interrupted by a shout from the ship. ''Oh, you have to forgive me the ship will leave soon and I have to leave with it. However when I am in the region I or one of my sons will attempt to contact you.A good day and I hope to see you again.'' and Welmoed boards the ship. Well you suppose you can go and search for your granduncle now. And you walk from the harbour docks to the main street hoping to see a hint of you grand-uncle's whereabouts when you are stopped by a man in the cloth of the clergy. ''Are you are Dietrich Von Adlerhorst by any chance?''. ''Yes.'' you reply. ''Good, I am Otto Gelb, Notarius and Scribe to the archbishop of Libau. I have been told to look for a young man who fits your description. Now if you cloud please follow me to the residence of the archbishop.'' So you managed to find one of your grand-uncle's agents or rather, he found you quite quickly by looking for a young man who fits your appearance and age. Which is odd considering the last time you saw you granduncle you we're a boy. Which raises the question, how old are you?

>I am 16, a man in the eyes of the law, young and vigorous though some of your peers will still probably treat you like a child

You were twenty years old. Old enough to not be talked down as if you were a boy, but still young enough to compete in most physical challenges a man of your class could face. You learned much in the time you spent at home fighting, riding and all other things present in a noble education. It combined with the four years in your lord father's service had taught more than simply practicing or reading from books. Still you were no master of you craft compared to great knights and warriors of the realm. You hoped that with enough time and experience you would one day be counted among them. Let's get back to the now as, after 15 minutes of walking, you have reached the market squire from where you can see the cathedral and the residence of the archbishop. The home was new, made out of brick and with a foundation of limestone. A you and your guide stopped for the he said. ''The archbishop has recently returned from a long and tiresome journey so I ask of you to be patient.'' ''Of course, he is my granduncle after all.'' was the reply. You were then guided trough the hall and up the staircase and ending by a door, Gelb spoke and said ''You can pass trough this door he is expecting you.'' Gelb then opend the door and, after you had passed trough it, closed again. ''So, finally you have arrived. I trust the journey has been good on you my dear boy?'' Those were the words of your granduncle Albrecht. He had greyed a little since last you saw him 7 years ago before he left as an attache of the church during the Vollinger crusade. He was many things a priest,a warrior,a crusader and, perhaps most importantly, your granduncle. ''Do you like it? the workmen finished the last parts a few week ago, eh no matter. I want to come to business right away. To begin with the reason I called you here, to the untamed frontier full of Pagan barbarians, orcs and who knows what else. You see, my dear boy the knight of the argent stars and I are not on the best of terms. Despite my position as knight-chaplain of the order, I am unfortunately caught between my postion as Archbishop of Libau and it's surrounding lands and my membership of the order. The order expects me to fulfil their orders within the city and to use my bishopric as a platform to advance the order's standing within the church and to receive the occasional ''donation'' from me out of the archbishops coffers. I would been fine with if not for that the grandmaster, a man by the name of Klement von Schwindlinghof send most of the money to the baron Erhard von Pflugfeld thereby embezzling the money. Naturally I cut off the money which enraged the grandmaster. Thankfully both off those frauds met their end in the battle I told about you about in the letter. That is not only thing, Pflugfeld was the leader of a faction within the local parliament, the knighthood. Who called for the subordination of the both the city and the archbishop of Libau to the grandmaster. (cont.)

''Yeah I no longer trust neither the order or the local nobility, it has become apparant the I need somone who I can trust. And who can you better trust than family?'' He flashes a small thin lipped smile. ''I shal be plain with you my dear boy. I itend to give Pflugfeld's old lands and titles. But instead of baron or lord I shall grant upon you the title of count. Which while make you the most senior noble within the knighthood of Muhrland(the land surrounding Libau and a region of Vollingen) making you it's presiding noble or landsmarshall as the office is named thereby negating the influence the order has on the knighthood of Muhrland. Here take a look ad this map your lands are in the southwest. To give some brief infromation on you neighbours. Grossepels and Kleinpels are the recently partitioned lands of the family von Kaltewald between two brothers, Gebhard and Ludwig. The commandry of Wallcarm is the local seat of one of the knight-captains of the order he is away now to elect an new grandmaster and last is the lordship of Estwald the domain of Eduard von Leischerde, an eccentric little man with one great passion, hunting he spent a whole month away from his court just to hunt down all boars within his border. Lastly here is coat of arms of the county you can quarter it with our families one to differentiate from your kinsmen in Fluddenmark.

My guess the eel is because the river in the middle is all curvy, and apparently is a german river named like that for the same reason.

>>5406511
Actually, just read the etymology on one of the cities and apprently buhl means hill , from middle german buhel and old german puhil.

A good new coat of arms for a new cadet dynasty. ''Most excellent my dear boy come with me. tomorrow I shall instal you as the new count.''

That morning after the neccesary preperation and fanfare had been prepared you put on your best surcoat and, after a short prayer were allowed entry into the great hall of the archbishopal residence.

Your granduncle then spoke with a voice that him sound twenty years younger ''Let i be known to all men, woman, both inside and outside the borders of the realm that a replement to the late lord Erhard von Pflugfeld has been found! Gallant, noble and pious! To my faithfull flock I would like to introduce Dietrich von Adlershorst the new lord of Grünwald!''

''By the power vested in me by the gods as by the temporal power vested in my seniority with the local order chapter I, Albercht von Adlershorst, archbishop of Libau and knight-chaplain of the order of the knights of the argent stars do hereby appoint, anoint and procliam Dietrich von Adlershorst as the count of Grünwald!''

some polite cheering and applause came from the public
''I think it is better that after tonight you go to your new domain and meet your new subjects'' Your granduncle said.
And thus the following morning after being outfitted with a horse and a new sword you said you farewell and left Libau for the first time

Huh, well a city on a hill anchored by a river on one side and with limited space on the other due to the other river could be good if that black splotch on the map is where our capital is. Tempted to switch to Aalbühl if the name actually affects the terrain of our domain or the location of our capital, though I just like Grünwald better as a name. Plus I'm fond of forests.

Thanks for going through even that small effort anyways.

Huh, a city on a hill with a river blocking one side one side sounds very defensible. I remember I read somewhere that Moscow was like that when it was just fortress.
Unfortunately I find Aalbuhl to be such an ugly name. And Green Forest reminds me of the Black Forest, it's a very german feeling name.

When after three days riding who finally came upon the capital of the fief you now owned. You did not have too high expectations. You were not disappointed but even the poorest knight in Tautenland had a castle of stone! this glorified hill fort had only a stone tower. and the village it self was not particularly interesting save for the furnace to the side of the village

You decided to look for someone in the castle who was in charghe of this place in the interregnum betwen you and your predecessor. And you someone. Balding, plain and with sunken in eyes this man must know how to run an administration.

Hmm, I'm guessing the left most building with the inner courtyard and grey square in the bottom right corner is our hill fort. We seem to have a couple pastures(?) which is nice and either one or two fields? I'm not sure if the yellow square is a field of wheat and we are using a two-field system or if the yellow square is something else and we only have one field at the bottom.

Still, it seems we have a little bit of everything, wood and stone, even a shallow inlet where we could maybe build something.

We are a soldier after all. This will be our castle name.

I should have put labels on the things but clarify things a bit. Yes the building with the courtyard is the hill for.

There two fields one for wheat and one with cabbage

There two meadows one for cow and one sheep

There is a lumber yard in top right

The Gray spot is is a clay pit and reddish round thing is the brick kiln and oven

There is a small dock for a fishing boat but river is here not deep enough for bigger boats and ships

The location is the place marked with star on the big map

The estuary on which it located the Eyling it joins the big river the Seldau which flow through Libau

So as for future construction I hope you all like brick gothic

Not sure I want them forming their own councils alongside allowing them to speak their own language just yet. They might start getting ideas of negotiating with us to form an executive council that has to give their approval on our actions and proclaimed laws before we can actually put them in place. Or otherwise putting some sort of check on our power when we are in a bad position in the wider world allowing them an opportunity to renegotiate things with us.

Plus, it is better to have another thing in our back pocket to negotiate or cede to them if we need something from them like more taxes or a larger percentage of days where they have to give their labour to us for a year or something.

We should also consider things like offering tax relief for those who convert/speak Tauten etc

We want to encourage them to assimilate, and giving perks to those who do is a good start and begins to split the population instead of them remaining one united block.

It may be questionable for the period but I like how it ties into the military background; be harsh, yes, but for good reason.

Essentially something like Catholicism or Orthodoxy but polytheist. So it it's more traditionally fantasy pantheons. ''We shall grant onto all civilised beings, no matter where they come or who they are the right to a fair trail. You wrote into your proclamation. ''Most excellent my lord I shall write the law during your absence and will send pigeons and couriers to all parts of the domain. You can sign them after your return.''

And so, after a good night's rest and a tasty breakfast you finally set out the search with a small posse and arrest these deserters setting out from Rittersbach according the travel route you made.

If you set out hoping for a fight, the results however where disappointing most runaway peasants stayed clear of the roads and after a while you got a report from a courier from your steward that the villages and fields where slowly trinkeling back with peasants. As you soon found out most of these deserters had not thought through or organised their escape well. As you and your men woke up in inside your camp and set out for another day on the road. You came upon three men on the ground, bound and gagged and with a board on their necks. ''Me rebel boss'' was written in broken Tauten

''Clasp them in chain, we shall bring them back for a trail'' You tell your men, some of the quietly snicker and laugh for they consider the trail a certain death sentance

On the way back to your capital as you and your men march along a dirt road covered from the sun by a thick shroud of leaves you spot something.

''No! you half-witted donkey! I keep telling you that we are going in the wrong direction!''
''Oh shut up Firimal the map quite clearly shows that we are going the right way''

A trio of long slender figures with pointy ears are bickering with themselves, you recognise these beings almost immediately, elves. Tall,long-lived and perhaps a bit haughty at times the average elf does not spent much time within the human realm's. They are friendly enough, trading with and on occasion helping human countries. They can be a bit patronising however and one needs a long breath when dealing with certain Elves. One of them, the one that has not spoken spots you and finally breaks the personal silence

''If you two dunces would stop arguing for a minute you cloud see that we have visitors'' A woman's voice said
''Hm?, what? oh, It is the uhh, what's the word Firimal?.''
''Count, Erendar'' Firimal replied.
''Shall I introduce then? I am Ilindiel and these are my brothers Erendar and Firimal. We are looking for the home of our aunt and uncle, who live somewhere around here though that information is about 149 years old, could you help us?'' The elf woman said.

''Sure'' you said and you quickly saw what was wrong, they held the map upside down, it was also outdated Libau did not even appear on it!
''You held the map upside down, it is also outdated'' You said
'' I told you so Erendar you should have bought the one with the windrose!''
'' Jump in a ditch Faramir!, that one cost extra money''
''Anyways,I suppose you cloud help us again?'' Ilindiel said.

''Please come with me, these lands are still wild and unsafe. I will take you to my capital and you look for your aunt and uncle afterwards.'' You said.
''Good, at least then we shall have clear starting point.'' Firimal said

And so you, your men, your prisoners and your guests move down the road and after four days you find yourselves back in Rittersbach.
It is quite late however and a such after a night's rest and an early breakfast you say goodbye to your three travelling companions.
Leaving you free to do justice, moving into your great hall although it looks more like an empty storeroom with a chair in the middle. However the problems already begin showing themselves, you as the lord of the land are to preside over the trial and judge them leaving the spot for procecustion open. The prisoners however also have difficluties, namley that they cannot understand you and you cannot understand them for you do not speak the language and vice versa.

Eh, could backfire because of misinterpretation, deliberate or otherwise. Whether because someone doesn't want the accused dead or vise versa or to make us look bad. Still, for now we should just go with this for a speedy trial, can't hold up every trial just because of the language barrier, we still have many trials to go probably.

We should still get a legal scholar on permanent retainer eventually to make sure justice is properly carried out in our lands.

''Get me an interpreter for these men. Now if you cloud.'' You told you steward. ''Right away, my lord.'' And so after about ten minutes your steward came back with a interpreter, your cook. A short, balding, fat man with little pig eyes by the name of Lunz came into the room. He told you that his father had married a local woman and learned the local language from her. Although not really a professional in translation. it would have to due

And so after about an hour and a half with the help of Lunz you are able to deduce the motivations of these rebels. The first one had rebelled because one of the local untitled nobles had burned down his farm and killed his livestock. As no protection was given by your predecessor he turned to illegal means.

The other two had less noble motivations. They were two brothers one of whom a poacher and the other a pickpocket who both saw an opportunity in the fleeing peasants to potentially live as bandit kings in the forest. Of course these delusions of grandeur did not stand up to reality for as soon as word got out that these were petty criminals and a man down on his luck, as well as that the lord of the land tracking them down. Their men soon turned upon them and left.

The outcome of the trail was probably never in doubt, the one with burned farm simply admitted it when he spoke the first time, the other two begruginly also admitted shortly after.

What punishment would you like carry out.
>Hang them, all three of them

>Hang the brothers, interrogate the farmer. Which untitled noble, what was his name, were there any other witnesses, why'd the noble burn down his farm and kill his livestock?

If the noble had a good reason that is one thing, if not then we can't have some petty nobles alienating our peasants and thinking he can get away with burning our god damn crops and livestock. Plus, this way it'll make it seem like we really are interested in justice. We can still punish the farmer later, but we should deal with this potential uppity noble.
>>
>>5413778
"Untitled noble". A nobleman without a noble title. Those are generally called "impostors" and should be drawn and quartered for going against the will of the Gods by claiming a birthright which wasn't theirs.

Now assuming QM meant "unlanded", that is a legitimate nobleman without any holdings we have even more of a problem in that mercenary knights are walking into *our* lands, killing peasants, burning farms and in a show of utter sadism and petty violence: butchering cattle just for the sake of killing them rather then the more civilized act of just taking them home. Cattle is damn valuable.
Either way people who have no business being here and doing things are doing their damnedest to ruin our burgeoning fiefdom.
This is a problem. This is a *BIG* problem, "wars and blood feuds are declared" kind of problem. Ladies and Gentleman of the court: we need this bastard imposters head if anyone is going to take our reign seriously.

>Hang the brothers, interrogate the farmer. Which untitled noble, what was his name, were there any other witnesses, why'd the noble burn down his farm and kill his livestock?
If he was the victim of a hostile aggressor the fault lies with the former lord for not doing his one job of protecting his subjects. If he is lying we hang him, simple as.
> Declare general amnesty after the hangings
So that the remaining would be rebels don't feel the need to do it again out of fear of retaliation.
>>
>>5413772
Yeah, I'll support >>5413787 the additional write-in

I assume QM meant unlanded, yes. There really is no reason for anyone to burn our crops, much less kill our livestock when they could just do an old fashioned cattle raid.

The only possible I could see for this being even half way legitimate is if this farmer is lying and has actually been a bandit way longer and somehow managed the logistics of travelling into a neighboring demesne to conduct his banditry and then inexplicably the offended noble somehow tracking this specific bandit all the way back to his farm to mete out punishment. Even that wouldn't really be okay without consulting us, but perhaps the "noble" felt it was okay given that this land hadn't yet received us to manage it.

Regardless, in all likelihood you are right and it is either an imposter or some feuding itinerant "adventurer" second son landless noble looking to claim a chunk of land for himself by force.

It could be, I would hope they haven't moved that quickly, or it is someone trying to get a slice of our pie before we're established. Either way it's a problem that needs dealing with.

>Hang the brothers, question the farmer about the noble.
Unless there was a formal war or justified rebellion between the baronies, that noble had no right to pillage the farm.
He broke both the god given contract between noble and serf and between liege and vassal.
As for the farmer, he will become a villein if he is an freeman, or have his taxes increased until he pays back what was stolen and the livea he took. Should he die, the duties will pass to his nearest of kin

''Very well, I shall come with you. I hope the information is worth it.'' And so you go to von Hirshkirchen's village, it is a quaint little thing smaller than yours and without a windmill or larger fields but with something that your village does not posses, an inn for tavern for travellers and merchants to rest in. Eventually you stop by the church at which point Laurenz dismounts.

''I have to ask another guest for the dinner tonight, the village priest is very important to explaining the attack on the farm. I will be back shorty.'' And after going to into the church and appearing outside again. The two of you rode up to his manor at which point you were introduced to his wife and children and joined them for the dinner.

''Do you like it?'' the lady of the manor asked you as you began to eat the roast pork presented to by the staff. When suddenly a man walked into the room. He wore priestly robes and a grim expression on his face, yet he also displayed a fatherly warmth and when we saw you eating with your host family the grimness quickly disappeared. when the dinner was finished however it reappeared.

''Is it time?'' He said. ''Yes,Bertha take the children to bed and do not appear within this room until we all walk out. We are to discus serious business.'' The wife quickly obeyed and she and the children soon vacated the room

''About the attack on the farm. I know who did it or at least I suspect that I do. You before that farm was with it's present owner it belonged to a mister Lauch who lived there with his wife and daughter, the problems began with his wife who very disappoint with her lot in life. So when Pflugfeld once rode into this place on the way trough to his castle, the two of them began an affair, at least I think they did what exactly happened is not clear.''

''Pflugfled was not an actively terrible ruler but he was neglectful, indolent and just plainly lazy. He also had a terrible appetite, both for food and woman. After a while a son was born to the Lauch family, Plfugfeld's bastard.'' The priest then spoke ''In the beginning Lauch did not know Pflugfeld was the real father and he never found out until it was to late''

Hirshkirchen then continued ''As soon as that boy could speak his mother would tell him of his real father and that he would come back one day to give them both their deverved place in the world. The boy started to receive 'gifts' in the form of armour and a sword from an anonymous patron. And'' His face turned red and his hands began to shake. ''That fat boar sent me a letter, 'suggesting' that I take the promising youth living in the Lauch home on as a squire''

''Pflugfeld summoned the Lauch family to his castle three years ago'' The priest said ''What happened there I do not know but when the family cart came back the boy sat upon his own horse as proud as a king and the mother drove the cart while the father lay in the cart, in a drunken stupor. Cuckoldry is one of the greatest humiliations a man can experience. I concluded the boy was a bastard the moment that mister Lauch came to me for advice''

''What did you say?'' You asked

''That when the soil is poisoned, one must simply walk away from it. And so he did he kicked out his wife and son and sold the house to it's present owner. Where he went I do not know''

Hirschkirchen continued his part of the story ''After meeting his real father, the boy became uncontrollable. He refused to do the duties of a squire, threatened to tell his father if I disciplined him. When he died the boy fully expected to be proclaimed the new lord of Grünwald. Instead the archbishop of Libau managed to stall the process long enough to install you instead. When he heard he ignited in fury, said that he would have your head and that he would gather men to attack you, unfortunately for him he had alienated nearly everyone here, save for some petty thugs he knew since childhood. I think he burned down the farmhouse to spite you,me and his adoptive father. After word got out that you had squashed the rebellion without shedding blood. He fled into the woods

Damn, what a moron. Son of an indolent lazy father, a sneaky envious whore of a mother and cuckolded adoptive father. Not recognized by the archbishop, hated by the common folk, attacked his own community, entitled as fuck, what a worthless guy.

Still, I guess he has an extremely thin claim and some muscle and skill at arms. He's still dangerous.

QM, how many men if any do we have with us right now? Depending on how many we have it may be prudent to wait for this guys retainers or to just plough on ahead with what we have now.

I'm not too worried about this guy on his own with some thugs, we can deal with him sooner or later. What I'm worried about is him escaping to another lord and that lord supporting his claim against our lands and title.

>Ask the man how many men he can muster and how fast.

Just doing this quickly for now, depending on this IC answer and the answer regarding how many of our own men we have with us at the moment determines which way I vote.

''Are there any hunter in this area whose help we can enlist?'' You asked.

''There are few, I hire them on some occasions if me or family wishes to hunt.'' Hirschkirchen replied. He continued.''I personally have 3 men as guards in service but I will gather the village militia. The militia is composed of about 23 men between 16 and 50 years old and trains once a week.''

This was good news. these 26 men combined with your personal escort of 10 men gave you a party of 36 men and the hunters and woodsmen where yet to be asked

''Let us set out and look for those hunters you mentioned.'' You said
''Wait a minute my son I have something to tell you.'' The priest interupted. ''As a man of the faith I cannot under circumstance condone violence, but as amatuer gradener I have this to tell you. When you weed out the weeds you should take care to take the roots with you or else it will grow back.''

''I understand father'' You said

And thus, You, Hirschkirchen and both your men set out into the nearby woods first and foremost to find the hunters to track this bastard. Luckily you came upon the hunter rather quickly.

''Hirschkirchen, I take you have come to hire me again for a hunt?'' He said. He was bearded with pale piercing eyes and multiple scars across his hands and face.
''For a manhunt more like.'' Hirschkirchen said. ''We are looking for Manfred Lauch, the bastard son of Pflugfeld.'' The hunter eyes then squinted ''Him, yes I rember that boy. Demanded I give him free hare and boar because he owned the forest or so he said. Chased him and his friends of by threatening to shoot them with me bow. You should worry to much about him his friends abandoned him that night and came there apologising and begging for food. They were nicer than that boy so I gave them some stew, made certain they were remorseful and send them back to their mothers the day after.''

''So where is he now?'' you asked

''Not very far, he is doesn't know or understand the forest. I think he never went off the roads when he travelled trough them until now. We can still track him quite easily, he wore enough armour that he left behind deep footprints. I will come with you, that boy is a threat both to the wildlife and to himself.''

Thanks to the help of an expert tracker. You and your search party come upon a clearing in the forest, where to edge of the clearing by some blueberry shrubs a young man is desaratly eating the berries. His mouth is blue from all of the juice from the berries. He looks at you and your a men first in panic, then in anger.

''You!, men I order you to kill that traitor and the usurper, that wrinkly old man cannot protect him now!''

The order fell on deaf ears.

''What are you waiting for you fucking halfwits!, I am the rightful lord of the land and all those who live in it!. Did that old vulture place under his spell or somthing?! KILL HIM!

''Put him in chains and put a cloth in his mouth, I shall judge him as soon as possible'' You said. At once your men surrounded Manfred and took both his arms and put them into the chains.

''How dare you I am the rightful lord of -mmhupmh'' Was the only sound as your men put a piece cloth in his mouth.

''Hirschkirchen then told you ''My congratulations my lord, you have proven to be more worthy liege-lord than Pflugfeld ever was. As for the bastard if you want to judge him quickly I suggest we return to the village, you may use my hall to judge him''

A good idea perhaps although you could always drag him to the capital to sent out a message to the population.

As long as he gets his trial there is no problem, we don't need to give others an opportunity to try and save him and use him against us. The populace already knows him by his words and deeds and so we need no excessive formalities or extra witnesses. Let this be a minor footnote in our history and nothing more.

And so you began the trail ''Manfred Lauch, you are charged with arson, attempted murder on multiple common men, attempted murder on two noble men, treason and rebellion. How do you plead?

''Rot in hell!'' Came the reply

This continued for a while with insults every time a question or argument from the prosecution but after ten minutes the judgement everyone expected came.

''My verdict is a follows, Manfred Lauch. I hereby sentence you to death by hanging, may the gods have mercy upon your soul.'' The bastard's face went from red to a dead white pale. The bluster of a few minutes ago was gone now gone. For once he had shut up. He was then marched outside to the gallows where fresh new rope had been hang. Besides the executioner, the priest was also on the platform where the boy now climbed up to.

''Manfred Lauch, for your crimes in life you now to be senteced to death. You have however one last chance, one last change to denounce evil in all it's forms and shapes. Do you renounce evil?''

''Rot in hell, you cow.''

''So be it, go in peace.''

The priest then walked down from the gallows as the rope was put around his neck and a bag over his head. However something went wrong during the drop as he did not die instantly, instead the body squirmed and writhed as the boy slowly suffocated to death. It took about two minutes for him to die.

''Shame it was not clean, everyone deserves a clean death'' Hirschkirchen told you. ''I suppose you would want to go back to Rittersbach now? With most of your troubles solved. Do not worry about the corpse, I will have it buried in an unmarked grave.''

''I think I am going to tour the domain to get a proper view of the land, it's people and the riches within both.'' You told Hirschkirchen. ''Oh and one more thing, I would recommend you replace your executioner. He is clearly not capable in this field.''

''I apologise my liege, but I do not employ a executioner, the hangman is a volunteer from the village, the butcher's apprentice to be exact but I shall forbid him from doing hangings ever again.''

Satisfied with his answer you set of trough the domain in about a month and two weeks you travelled trough the domain. Meeting many member of the gentry or junkers as they are called in these parts. Ass well as some free-holding farmers not bound to servitude to some local lord but owing loyalty directly to you. You also met a small community of hermetic monks who lived in seclusion deep in the forest.

On the topic of natural resources you had surveyed much of your realm and came to the conclusion that there where two main opportunities. The first was the mountain in the east of the realm where, if surveys where successful hopefully bring many metals and gems into your hands.

The second option was doubling down on lumber production by expanding and creating new lumber-yards. This would bring in less than mining the mountain. But is less risky and expensive

However, both these options had the same problem. They where dependant on the resources of your domain and would eventually run out.
Thus when you spotted that the main road from Libau into neighbouring kingdom of Sluvoting that passed trough your domain used a ford instead of a bridge. Thus, you concluded that one could profit massively if a toll bridge was built across the river Seldau. It would be expensive but sustainable.

This still quite expensive and as an alternative you cloud simply build new roads and expend old ones across your domain. It would be a long term investment but would probably bring in immigrants and trade as well as making it safer to travel

In the end, while sitting behind your writing-desk in Rittersbach. You decided upon what going to be build
You currently have 683 VM (Vollinger Mark) in the treasury,it is the fifth month of the year 1220

>Fund a mining expedition, risky and expensive with more costs in the foreseeable future, but potentially potent (costs 320 VM, takes 9 months)
>Expend lumber operations in the realm, tried and true but profits will decrease if deforestation is pushed to far (costs 260 VM, takes 10 months)
>Begin building a toll bridge across the river Seldau it could potentially make much profit of travellers but is dependant upon the flow of trade (costs 300 VM, takes 14 months)
>Expand and renovate the road network of Grünwald, allowing trade and immigration to more easily flow into your lands (costs 240 VM, takes 16 months)
>>

Are these up-front costs, or can we pay as the projects progress?
>>
>>5416428
Upfront
>>
>>5416417
Can we expand the harbor and get some naval trade? The river seem to be wide and navigable, goes through Wallcarm and Kleinpels and leads to Libau.
Having access to a port city that belongs to our grand-uncle, and connecting the largest city to capital of the county to the obvious center of trade should be key to a strong economy and getting allies.
>>
>>5416440
Also river transportation is cheaper than land routes, and should be easier to tax
>>
>>5416440

>Expend lumber operations in the realm, tried and true but profits will decrease if deforestation is pushed to far (costs 260 VM, takes 10 months)

I think we should take it slow and build up our domestic industry. (as much as pre-modern forms of industry can be called as such anyway) Go for the sure thing initially, get trade, drain swamps for farm land, get lumber to improve the number of available tools and housing. Then after our investment has paid off we can think of the more dangerous and risky mining expedition once we have a bigger bank.

I also agree with going with riverine trade, connects us with our grand-uncle and is just plain more efficient. You can carry far more via boat and trade both up and down the river with horse barges. We'll be in a better trading position once we actually have a strong industrial sector.
>>

>Expend lumber operations in the realm, tried and true but profits will decrease if deforestation is pushed to far (costs 260 VM, takes 10 months)
The lumber will help with the construction of a harbor and ships, and it's a good basic good to start attracting merchants so we can specialize in some luxury or trade good

>>
>>5416459
I think we should focus more on the roadwork than expanding on the forestry business, from which our domain is already profiting from and which the qm stated could cause it to become unviable if we push it too far.
Also your point on draining swamps for farmland, imporve the number of tools for better farmland etc. Would aply better with the roadworks since more land will become accessible through at the very least dirt roads since part of the roadbuilding will be guranteed clearing of trees and would make previously unreachable areas through wagon and more setlers/traders come in general as the qm stated.
Also it would help us with other domestic affairs such as if we need to march some troops for example or hunt bandits etc.
I agree that the port sounds good but should check out what other options we have before coming to a definitive decision.

You began drafting the orders for the road network to be expended, you then handed these over to your steward. Who then put aside the necessary money in the treasury. You then looked outside your window and at the village. This place could become a major trade and population hub and more importantly a source of money. although it would also serve as your base of operations for now. So you might as well begin settling in fully.

You came to consider some improvements for the village thankfully less expensive and shorter than the road project due to the smaller scale

The first main option was to build a harbour for ships and barges to stop at thereby increasing trade in the village and potentially diversifying the goods available to the village.

The second option was to build a tavern or inn owned by you to increase profits. It would keep travellers with money a place to stay and spend their coin as well and your own population would probably be eager to come and go.

You could also begin to renovate you hill-fort into proper castle made out of brick. which was thankfully availbe to you thanks to the furnace just outside the village it would be expensive and with no immediate or direct profit but would increase your personal security and personal prestige relative to your neighbouring fellow vassals.

Another option would be to expand the capacity of the brick furnace to produce more brick. It would most certainly give you something more sturdy to work with than would and would help with building more brick buildings. Although with no market to sell them to the profitability remain questionable

You have 443 Vollinger Mark (VM) in the treasury,it is the fifth month of the year 1220

Indeed, to truly prosper and increase trade and prosperity. Both an inn and a harbour would be a great addition for the village. You can already imagine that in the inn merchants would prefer to do business within a warm room with mug of beer rather than standing in the outside exposed to the elements.

As such you order your steward to begin the neccesary efforts to build these new improvements.
And after about a week of handling imports of materials and tools as well as hiring some experts on your projects.

Now, with the most hectic part of it behind you can focus on another part of ruling, reforms.

What would you like to reform?

Indeed to properly govern a county you would need to properly implement a system of subdivision to create an effective state, the question was however what kind of adiminstation you wanted

One option was to give the local administrative position as a hereditary position to one of the gentry and raise them to the position of baron or viscount. It most likely ensure a local centralisation of the subdivision but would most likely create a class of noblemen who would not be pleased by any attempt to curb their vast freedoms.

Another option is to appoint the heads of these administrative entities yourself whether they came from the local gentry or sent there on your behalf these men's position would exist only at your whim. And only you could appoint or fire them.

An unorthodox option was to allow the local inhabitants to elect their own heads who would then be confirmed or vetoed by yourself. It would be a decline in your own power but would please to local very much

What type of sub administration would you like create?

Indeed the idea of appointing a officer who reports to you and is loyal to you would ensure a firm grip on the institution thereby further shifting the balance of power in your favour.
The only thing left to do now is to name the new entities.
>Name them Bailiwick with a bailiff at the head
>Call them castellany with a castellan in charge
>Give them the name commissariat with a commissioner.
>Declare them districts with a director.

''I, count Dietirch von Adlershorst, count of Grünwald do hereby announce the creation of the castellanies as administrative divisions within the realm. The castellan shall be delegated some of the duties of the count, such as collecting taxes, ensuring public order and hold courts of law. The office can only be given by, and revoked by the count, to prevent corruption castellans shall be held accountable for any potential corruption of their subordinates and themselves. Singed, count Dietrich of Grünwald.

This where the words you had written in a letter to be sent to all prominent members of the realm. unfortunatly now the real work began for six months you spent interviewing the right people for the position defining where the borders of a castellany began and endend as well as handing out a badge of office fore the castellan to bear and formally swearing in these men by now it was the eleventh month of the year 1220 and it was time to review the ledger

INCOME

-Taxation: NEW 440,75 Vollinger Mark (due to immigration and an increase in efficiency your taxbase has grown by 2,5 percent)

-Production:NEW 267,8 Vollinger Mark (Production has increased by 3 percent)

-Tariffs and tolls: NEW 102,4 Vollinger Mark (partial completion of the road network and the completion of the harbour has already begun brining in a massive increase of 28 percent.)

-Total income: NEW 810,95 Vollinger Mark

EXPENSES

-Administrative: NEW 70 Vollinger Mark

-Military: 200 Vollinger Mark

-Upkeep: 280 Vollinger Mark

-Import costs: 130 Vollonger Mark

Total expenses:NEW 680 Vollinger Mark

Total net revenue:NEW 130,95 Vollinger Mark

Current treasury deposit: 1053,7 VM

As you can see mangend to increase the income of the county significantly while keeping the cost relatively low as well with five months of revenue you have managed to fill the treasury quite nicely. Now there are varius ways to spend this money which you could think of.

>Build a proper castle with walls,a stable,a blacksmith and all those other things. (Costs 720 VM, takes 19 months)
>Hire agents within Tautenland to promote immigration in the county (costs 850 VM, will give a boost the taxation growth percentage, can be seen at the end of the year)
>Order an ship by the shipwrights of Libau to carry you or your goods up and down the river (Cost 680 VM, due to long waiting lists you while have to wait a year or two)

STATE OF THE COUNTY

Currently the county is: stable, it population can safely traverse the roads and villages, some brigands remain in the more remote and harder to reach places but are no serious problem as of now.

Population: As of now, Grünwald remains sparsely populated and rural. There are no places which cloud be considered cities or towns. The population is predominantly human.

Military: There is currently no formal military in Grünwald, there are village militias and personal guards but those are privately hired any expenses to the armed forces goes to paying for personal guards and subsidising the militias.

Administrative: Efforts have been made to begin creating an administration for the county. Centralisation has not yet begun but the foundations for it are currently being laid

Indeed, with the economy stable you must now begin looking after your own personal secrutty and wellbeing and to build yourself a proper home . Castle construction began in late 1220 early 1221 by laying the foúndation for the walls and keep. The hill on which your old hill fort stood would be subsumed into your castle including the hill itself.

In the late third month of 1221 a man in long cloak, a big hat and a short beard and with a overburdened donkey came asking for an audience he introduced himself as Wolfgerus Baum
''My count, I am Wolfgerus Baum. I am in search of a new place to live and work.

''Is that so? I do no think that one needed to ask me for permission to immigrate here'' You said

''Ah, you see my lord I am not just any ordinary man looking for a place to live and work. I have noticed that this part of the world is particularly missing in the practitioners and scholars of the arcane. I am here to alleviate that problem.

''So you are a mage?''

''Yes, studied at one of the universities back home decided to roam with some adventures for a while then took up teaching for some noble families got bored and left for these lands, so what do you say?''

>Grant him permission to settle on your lands, it will be usefull

''I would be happy to accept a sorcerer into my lands. I would even accept one into my service if he has the right papers''

To this the wizard simply smiled and said ''So you wish to see my credentials? very well. A moment please.'' He then rummaged trough one of the bags. ''Bloody bags of holding you would think that they would organise themselves as well but no that is apparently beyond our grasp, bloody stubborn professors. Anyways here it is.'' He then handed you a piece of paper with a seal of the university of Geltilen with on it the acknowledgment that Wolfgerus Baum had shown the necessary knowledge in a fields of magic signed by a professor and the rector of the facility you then verified these papers with your steward and scribe and handed them back to the wizard

''Your papers are valid, I would be a happy to accept in my service''

''Your lordship is too kind, but I have some requests.''

''Oh?, what are they?''

''I need a tower with good thick walls and much space for my research and to properly store my belongings since these bags are good for storing things in a mess.''

''A collar of protection my lord it will push against anything slightly and will forcibly change the course of any blade if they come for your neck or upper chest it also floats a bit of from your skin and clothes so you don't feel the weight. Now I assume the tower won't be built in one day so I will take up residence in the inn. Do not worry about payment I have earned enough in my lifetime to pay to life in a inn.''

You began your letter with a short retelling of your activities here, your arrival here, the crushing of a rebellion before it even had begun, the tracking, trail and hanging of the insidious bastard Manfred Lauch and the beginning of a proper castle.

You then began asking about both yours parents health, your brother's wellbeing and your sister's marriage prospects and the general wellbeing of the various people you knew in and around the castle.

Lastly you asked for various news and political events that were happening in Fluddenmark and in Tautenland

You signed the letter and put your seal on it

You then paid a merchant heading for Fluddenmark to deliver the letter. It would take several months to bring the letter to your family and then even more months for the reply to come back.
Still it gave you a warm feeling to communicate with your family again.

But now, with personal affairs at least partially behind you it was time to get back to home

We are creating trade and wealth. Now we need to protect that investment.

>>

Well, why not both? The second/third sons idea is good for me since it basically spreads out and generate wealth, while also making them loyal to us. After all, we gave them the land. Plus it might cause unrest if we kept bringing in from back home.

>>5420205
It probably will, yes, but if they are settling empty lands it should be less of a problem then if we take farms away from the locals and besides if they do decide to attack and kill these people we have a perfect casus belli with which to drum up support in the not-holy roman empire. What ambitious young knight wouldn't want to make his name avenging the poor, innocent, peasants who just wanted a chance at a better life. It'd be the christian thing to do.
But that is an unlikely outcome, I can see some friction but as long as the two cultures are kept somewhat separate initially it shouldn't boil over.

It was indeed time to create a military to begin with a formal retinue of retainers to guard you and your entourage if you travelled outside the walls of the castle in peacetime a garrison for the castle would be created as well but because the castle was still under construction they would mostly be guarding the construction area

Now there was only thing to be left to do and that is to appoint a captain of the guard.
There are many men who would be honoured to fill such a position but there were three who seemed the brighest among them.

The first was a young man by the name of Hans Schmidt a relatively young man who is capable of carrying a calf with one arm young and very strong but rash and inexperience.

The second was a rugged older man called Friedrich Eckling who in contrast to Schmidt had been a soldier since the order first came here. He followed as a mercenary and had stuck around as guard in this village; He has already past his prime fighting age but was not lacking in leadership and training capabilities

The last was a half-elf named Isidor Weinburg who spent his youth in the forests of his mother's race but would move away from there upon reaching manhood to see the world. In time he would become a experienced ranger and adventurer but he is now looking to put that live behind him. He is very good with fighting in forests and moving in them but did not show much interest in leadership.

Who would you appoint captain?

you decided to appoint Eckling as the captain of the guard, with Schmidt as his second-in-command. You gave Weinburg command of a small detachment of archers and light infantry to act as scout and forest rangers the way you gave your retinue the correct command structure you desired.

And just in time for a ship from the river had just docked at you new harbour.
It carried various goods and men and as it docked you spotted a young man who looked familiar but could not your finger on it. It did not last long however for the young came to you almost immediately.

''My count, I am Floris Welmoed. I do believe you met my father?''

''Yes, yes I have.''

''My father has sent me out here to keep an eye out for his trade interests. He is already getting older and has sent his sons to his businesses in various cities to keep an eye on them. ''Very well, come with me young welmoed we shall discuss the details in the castle.'' And so in exchange for a some money the welmoed family got to build a warehouse and a permanent spot at the harbour. Their ships became a more frequent sight in the following months buying in food and selling equipment like shovels, sickles and pitchforks. Creating a exchange where peasant sold their excess produce fore more modern and better farming equipment.

And so after a few uneventful months as spring gave way for summer and as the walls of your castle slowly came from their foundations and the warmth made some peasants swim in the river for fun and cooling. You received a reply to your letter that you did not expect

And so after a month of waiting during which you frantically made sure everyone polished their weapons, helmets and other metalwork you had made sure that the entire village was in perfect condition.

Then, the day came. On a river barge they came towards your harbour where you stood waiting for them. As soon as they came on land you greeted them.

You first greeted your brother Erich.

''Erich it is good see you again since last we met.''

''And so it is Dietrich my dearest brother.''

The both of you then shared a brotherly hug before you turned to kiss your mother's hand.

''Mother.''

''Dietrich my son, you have grown a little since I last saw you. It is good to see you. Your father wanted to come to but he has become too sick to travel.''

''And so, I must tell you this. Your father whises for you to marry. And as soon as possible, both your brother and sister have already been married and now only you are unmarried so tell me why?''

Wait, Hirschkirchen isn't even a neighbouring lord, he is one of our direct vassals.
Well, all the other barons technically are since we are a count, but still he is like a knight with a manor instead of having territory. And we probably met more of these minor lords types while surveying the land, but no major nobles.

everyone will go "What two bridges in the same place ?!? I need to see it". It would really help our capital.
Mostly because we can move by land our troops from our capital, without waiting with le small fisher/merchant boats or travel more by land for find a natural place of the rivers for move in another part of our land.
Just have our future army stride in Side A or Side B of our lands, thanks to two bridges.
It does also help with trade. And it makes our capital far more important strategically, both for allies and foes.

Another thing we should do is probably cut a decent amount of trees and make a palisade with some earthworks around our village.

It was a good idea to take your family to tour around the county for there was much to see and do. You travelled trough the plains and forests were many beautiful landscapes were present. You even managed to run into Hirschkirchen who let you and your family stay for a few days and even took you and your brother for a hunting trip. But as all good thing do this too must come to an end and so after a month worth of travelling and what amounted to a vacation you took your family back to Libau for goodbyes and so after waving them goodbye you found yourself with your granduncle once more.

''It is good that you have come to the city even if it was not neccesarily to see me, come with me away from the prying eyes of the harbour. Things have begun to change and we must make preparations.''

And so after short walk to the archiepiscopal palace.

''The polictics of this state have begun to escalate. The order has a new grandmaster and not one I am keen on.''

He handed you a piece of paper which proclaimed Rudolf von Eisenstall the new grandmaster of the knights of order of the argent stars.

''This is both unexpected and bad news, he is of a younger generation of the order one of the first to be born here to Tauten settler lords. I do no expect much good from it.''

''I will begin planning and executing a military build-up granduncle'' You said

''Good, you do that I will begin to contact and organise some potential allies. Do not expect to immediately have to face the grandmaster it can take years before we come to blows.''

And so after few hours of looking at maps and discussing strategies you departed for Rittersbach the next morning. You need to think over the potential composition of your army.

The first option was a focus on heavy infantry, whose armour would make them capable but slow

The second option would be to focus on pike-men like in the more mountainous terrain of Tautenland. Great against cavalry but immovable in open terrain.

An third alternative would be a primacy on archers to use in your armies. devastating if properly used but vulnerable to the melee

The fourth option was a emphasis on cavalry like in Aurilosa but you would have few of them at hand and would be difficult to maintain

What is to be done?
>Heavy infantry
>Pike-men
>Arches
>Cavalry
>>
>>5431754
Is this just the focus of our first major professional standing army units or for all our army as a whole. If it is all of our army then we should of course go for a good mix, but if not then we can choose any one.

Looking at the region map near the start of the thread and subsequent ones, the terrain isn't THAT heavily forested, so really any of these would be fine in the relatively open fields.

If this is the decision for the composition of our entire army that we are working to build up over time and form the revenue to support then I'd say something like 10-20% cavalry, 40-50% pike-men, 20% archers, and 20% heavy infantry. Depending on what exactly we can support I might say make the percentage allocated to pike-men instead be heavy infantry or vice versa, or to have slightly more archers at the expense of something else depending on what we come to know we are facing.

For now...
>Cavalry

Best to have the current king of battle and the decisive arm of war in our roster before anything else, levies not withstanding.

A halberd sounds more like the pike, and means that if we ever have to fight outside of open fields (like for example against insurgents or those tribesmen we keep worrying about) they'd have a bloody difficult time maintaining the formation *and* swinging those big ol' things around without getting stuck in trees and such.
But I agree in principle, they were a splendid weapon so lets make you an offer: the Pollaxe!
It's basically a smoll halberd, meter and a half to two meters long, and rather popular... With the nobility, it was an expensive weapon and generally only affordable for nobles because making and putting all the bits together wasn't something any village smith could do.

But if you a versatile, dangerous, two handed weapon that will impress both on and off the battlefield this is what you want.

Although the halberd would have been a good option. The good and reliable poleaxe with it's smaller blade would be able to pierce the armour even better it was therefore decided to implement the poleaxe as the primairy weapon of your new core.

As you discussed these matters with captain Eckling he mentioned that the men would need to be lead by more than one man to keep unit cohesion.

As such several option were discused.

The first was to reduce the officer position to nobles only as make service in this corps manadorty as part of their feudal contract with you it would cut cost but would most likely leave a leadership with questionable quality

The second is to recruit experienced adventures and mercenaries to train and lead the corps, though it would bring in some very able leadership, the diverse pool of potential officers would hurt cohesion.

The third and perhaps most radical option is to implement a completely professional corps from the rank and file to the officers. It would be very expensive however. As it would require an system of examination and education to be set up.

In the end you chose to
>Bring in the nobles and gentry
>Hire mercenaries

>>
>>5437264

I hesitantly agree with this combination, with some caveats.

The point of bringing in the nobles as a mandatory part of their feudal contract is not out of a preference for the aesthetic of nobility or to keep the nobility on top with preferential treatment, so much as it is to alleviate the costs of the system by making it so we don't have to train as many professionals.

The nobles have the wealth to equip themselves, the knowledge to lead as it is part of their "job" and they can lessen our manpower requirement burden by filling some of the officer positions.

The distinction I'm trying to get at is that I, personally think that in combining these options we should not be sending the nobles through these hypothetical military academies* and giving them preferential treatment so much as filling half our officer positions with nobles and accepting whatever strange quirks and strange beliefs they may have about the conduct of war and filling half with professionals, the point again being to alleviate costs given we don't have that huge a budgetary surplus.

*You may ask why is this the case seeing as making them all go through a central system helps unify all our forces under a doctrine and has other such benefits whereas doing half and half creates cohesion problems of its own at a higher level. To which I would reply that I think this would be a transitional step. We'd later transition to fully professional when we can afford it better, I'm just assuming that it'd be extremely expensive at the moment. Either that or we should do one or the other but not both since I don't want the expense associated with professionals while retaining the wilful quirks and potential incompetence of some overeager noble and add the potential for our subordinate nobles to subvert a skilled professional army from under our noses because they only care about who pays them.

Wall of text over. May change my mind since my own concerns and ideas have their own problems and I wrote a lot of this quickly without thinking about it as hard as I maybe should've.

I support this train of thought.
>Form an officer corps

I'd also point out that we're probably talking about closer to a dozens, or a dozen, men rather then in the hundreds already so while setting up the infrastructure behind a functional army we can't afford or support large amounts of professionals at the moment.

Despite the popular belief that blue blood makes one a popular leader you knew better than to trust solely on the high birth of the junkers. Although shaking up the social order of fief was most certainly not one of your intentions.

It was thus decided that the new army would be led by the prominent families of the fief thereby binding them further to your reign and incentivising them to help defend the fief in time of crisis.

There was however a problem with all these plans. This new standing army would cost a lot of money to maintain and train, it could potentially be disastrous if not kept in check and as such you needed to extract the money for it from somewhere.

But where?
>Impose heavier tariffs on the rivers and road, but it would hurt trade.
