/qst/ - Quests

The year is 1374 DR. Sixteen years have passed since the Time of Troubles, when the gods were made humble, and forced to wander the Realms as mortals. With the ascension of the mad god Cyric, Prince of Lies, and the recent return of the tyrant god Bane, Lord of Darkness, the future of Faerûn seems increasingly uncertain. It falls to bold individuals who possess an abundance of cunning, might, and determination to shape the future... should they be up to the challenge.

Night and day and night again, you wander the Silverwood, searching for anything that can lead you to your people. Eilistraee's followers prove ever elusive, and ultimately you are forced to concede that there remains nothing of them here but their shrine and their dead. That is not to say that your efforts have been a waste - there is a cold fire burning in the back of your skull, an intuitive knowing that you are on the correct path. The absence of physical evidence is no indication that you are not making progress, or so you feel.

Inevitably, you make the return trek to the safety of Everlund's fortified walls. Over several days you travel through the thickets of the Silverwood and along the dirt road leading north, noting the absence of werebeasts. It seems that Malar himself took the liberty of slaughtering his faithful for failing to uphold his precepts when under his scrutiny, a chilling reminder that this is the world of the gods, and that mortals such as yourself merely inhabit it.

You stroll up to the iron grid barring entry into trade city late in the morning, when you are sure to be allowed in. As the gate lifts, one of Greycastle's men looks you over and positions himself directly in front of you. "Well met, milady. Are you, uh, Sindira?" He asks, butchering the pronunciation of your pseudonym. "That is who you are, yes?" Suspicion takes hold, and you rest a hand on your weapon while scanning your surroundings for danger as you nod.

"The Council wants you to report to them as soon as you can. You can find 'em talking at the Hall of the Elders right about this time today. It's by the Bell Market, you can't miss it." Standing at attention, he steps in place and raises his weapon upwards before relaxing his posture and stepping aside. It is a peculiar gesture unique to surface-dwellers, you assume.

Victorious, you have triumphantly returned from your hunt, and may do as you will. What is first on the agenda?
>The Council of Elders has summoned me? I suppose I should visit them right away.
>For whatever reason, I want to meet with Ilanis right now. The girl has yet to pay me for my performance, now that I think about it.
>First, I shall see Willow about my reward. Slaying a werebear was no small feat, even for a veteran such as I.
>There is still much on my mind. I would go for a walk, and clear my head before anything.
>I want to do something else. [Write-in.]

While I appreciate the enthusiasm, there is only so much that can be done at once.

There appears to be a tossup between going to see reporting to the council immediately and going to see Ilanis first, and possibly changing clothes along the way.

I mean, we already asked Ilanis about the council in the first thread, which was a basic rundown. Jez would probably get a more detailed explanation from Willow, seeing as she's a religious leader, and thus would have more contact with them.

You make it your first priority to ask after well-being of Ilanis and Willow for no apparent reason at all. An alien physical feeling washes over you when you are told that nothing out of the ordinary has occurred at the Dreaming Dragon of late, and the High Ranger arrived with her entourage just the other day. Knowing that your concerns are unfounded, you decide to report to the Council of Elders.

Sitting at the apex of Everlund's hierarchy, a summons from the council is no trivial matter, and you will be treating it with the appropriate gravitas. Across the bridge, just east of the Bell Market, is a low, circular building of stone patrolled heavily by the Keeper's subordinates. Upon entry, your weapons are confiscated as per 'standard procedure,' whatever those words mean.

Traversing the Hall of the Elders adds another new experience to your list of surface world oddities. The limestone corridors of the Hall prominently feature two separate wings. One is known as the Hall of Records, an expansive library that contains more books than you have ever seen in your entire life. The other, the Hall of Redress, houses a plurality of courts in which the surface-dwellers practice their exceedingly complex laws. Despite being the seat of Everlund's government, you are amazed by the alarming lack of death and torture here.

Ascending a staircase, you enter a spacious round chamber of utilitarian look illuminated by the sunlight pouring in through a series of ceiling windows. A lengthy blue carpet intuitively guides you to its center that is partially enclosed by an oaken table shaped like a half-circle, at which six figures sit just out of arm's reach of each other. In front of each is a steel placard which proudly proclaims the title, name, and office of its owner, in that order. Beginning at your left, and moving clockwise, these are:

KEEPER BRANDT GREYCASTLE, KEEPER OF THE BRIDGES. The serpentine man with whom you worked leans back in his chair and occupies himself by reading a chapbook titled 'THE SILVER MARCHES THIS MONTH,' utterly indifferent to the proceedings. He does not even pretend interest as a formality - an attitude that speaks volumes in itself.

MASTER RUPERT TENPENNY, MASTER OF GUILDS. A trail of smoke rises from the rotund halfling's mouth as he casually chomps down on a cigar. Taking the rolled tobacco in his pudgy hand, he wets his lips and whistles obnoxiously as he lays eyes on you, earning him derisive glances from most of the others.

GUARDIAN STEN SILVERSHARD, HIGH CAPTAIN. You may have never seen a paladin before, but you have heard the stories: holy warriors devoted to their gods, willing to fight to the last breath for their cause. The High Captain's profile aligns with the rumors. The aged human male regards you with a confident smirk, enjoying a cylinder of tobacco smaller than a cigar. His armor is polished to a mirror sheen, and he seems to possess a quiet strength that exceeds his years. He studies you with the eyes of experience and unflinching discipline.

ARFAERN AMARANTH CYWIR, HIGH SORCERER. Amaranth sits upright and smiles politely, an act that you discern is difficult for him to maintain in present company. He is well-kept, attentive, and ready to assist at a moment's notice. You possess some small knowledge of the traitor language. His title, 'Arfaern,' roughly translates to 'great wizard' or 'archmage.'

SPEAKER DULNUR DARKSHADOW, SPEAKER OF THE TOWN. Belching smoldering exhaust from his pipe like the pollutive smog of a foundry, Dulnur is as dour and unyielding as ever. The dwarf does not even acknowledge your presence, merely keeping you in his steely gaze that reminds of his embittered grudge against your kind.

ARADONESS ARARA FARARAH, HIGH PRIESTESS OF CORELLON LARETHIAN. This elven woman epitomizes sylvan beauty. She is tall and lithe, with chestnut hair and full lips. Her freckles do not detract from her appearance. On the contrary, you recognize that many males hold such insignificant blemishes as desirable, viewing the women who possess them as 'attractive, but attainable.' As you enter her awareness, her easy smile becomes a caustic grimace. Unlike Dulnur's blanket dislike, she seems to harbor a special hatred for you, specifically. You believe her title, 'Aradoness,' translates to 'Great Peacekeeper.'

"Arright," says Sten, the weary paladin. "You're, uh..." he shuffles through a stack of papers, skimming the contents of the topmost one. "Sin-dee-ruh?" He scratches his head, bewildered by your apparent exoticism. "Sindiira," corrects Amaranth with a clinical tone. "Yeah, that," responds Sten. "We already got everything we needed to hear from Willow. All you gotta do is answer some questions to fill in the gaps, won't take more'n a couple'a minutes. This is just for the paperwork, so don't feel pressured to answer a certain way." Arara raises her hand, receiving a nod of approval from the High Captain. "Go ahead, Aradoness."

"Guardian Silvershard," sings the priestess in a melodic voice, "long have I considered you an ally to... no, a friend of my people. I beg that just this once, you heed my warning, and have the Concubine of Lolth expelled from Everlund." She and Amaranth exchange looks, the former hateful and the latter despondent, though he maintains his silence. "The Protector parted the mists of time and unveiled the future to me in a dream! As sure as the sun sets, the darkness of the Dhaerow will descend upon our city, and it will be this one who leads them to our gates!" She points at you in an accusatory fashion.

Dulnur slams his fist against the table, waving his pipe around as he pleads with the High Captain. "Naer did I think Bark Sniffer o'er there would be talking sense, but by Moradin's bearded balls, listen ta her, Sten! We can't let them in, yae know what they're like!" Red in the face, the dwarf trembles with anger. "Hear that, yae grayback whore? Yae're not welcome here!"

Staring at you lasciviously, Tenpenny calmly interjects, waggling his cigar around as he talks. "I mean, what's the problem with the darks, anyway? I don't got a problem with 'em. So what if we let a few sexy Spider Riders in? It'll be good for public relations." Dulnur snorts. "Still collecting yaer venereal diseases, Rupe?" Quips the dwarf. The halfing is incensed. He practically jumps out of his seat... or, he would, were he athletic enough to do so. "That was one time, Darkshadow! One. Time! It was a whole year ago, ya can't keep bringin' that shit up!"
>>
>>5383514
Forcefully, Sten bangs his gauntlet against the table, quelling the debate. "Shaddap, dammit! We're not throwing anybody out, and that's that. Sorry, Sindira. Now, we were all real shocked when we heard this, but these sorts of things do happen in the Realms sometimes. According to the High Ranger's account, you, quote, 'spoke with the avatar of Malar,' but she didn't give us a lot of specifics. Why don't you explain what happened, in your words?"

All eyes are on you, awaiting your response. Even the ever-aloof Greycastle steals a curious glance. As is too often the case, regardless of what you say, you will be judged for it.
>I challenged Malar's Huntlord to a duel, and he wished to meet the woman who bested his champion!

>Malar appeared before his followers when we happened to be hunting them. All of it was pure happenstance.

Well, Arara is right about how we're leading the Drow to Everlund, though it's hardly by choice. I gotta say though, real dick move by Corellon to not give a more precise vision. It's certainly on brand, but wow.
>>
>>5383726
It's not all bad, mind. Corellon's giving us enough wiggle room for those Drow to be the Eilistraeans we're looking for.
>>
>>5383738
As much as I'd wish the interpretation was that kind, opening up with Jez being a Concubine of Lolth really shows that Arara is purposefully unwilling to present it in any other way, nevermind the historic malicious indifference Corellon and his church have shown to followers of Eilistraee. Jury's out on whether or not Jez is one of her faithful yet, but considering... well everything that Jez does it's probably going to happen in the future. At least this appears to be an old argument considering Dulnar's comments about Amaranth, and the look between Amaranth and Arara.
>>
Now that I think about it, was Jez the only one who could hear the Huntlord when he told her about her sisters? If not, the council should've had an entire day to deliberate over the meaning of what was said, giving actual credence to Arara's claims regarding casting Jez out for the safety of Everlund. That and the whole orc problem that would come with it.
>>
>>5383744
IIRC, Eilistraee got a place in Arvandor (elf heaven) around this time period, so there's a slim chance that some reconciliation has happened by this point. Or there's the possibility that we're the catalyst for said reconciliation...

>>5383767
The problem with ditching now is we've stuck around town long enough for our sisters to peg us to Everlund, thanks to Phaere's magic spider monsters. If we leave now it means starting back from zero in allies and influence while our reputation gets shafted here, all while our sisters are still following us to our new hidy-hole.
>>
>>5383794
It's not that I think that Jez should be ditching Everlund, it's that they could just decide to string her corpse up on the wall, like Dulnar said from earlier. It's an unlikely decision considering what Jez has done and how she's interacted with the various members of the council so far, but entirely possible when faced with the defense of the city over a single drow life. That or just enhanced questioning before stringing her body up.
>>
>>5383794
Agh should've added this into the original post. If I'm remembering this correctly, the whole bit with Drow being allowed into Arvandor was due to the actions of this one Drow wizard who "fixed" (turned them brown and got rid of the effects of faezress) some of the Drow in that he got rid of the curse from that one Balor who screwed with the Drow ruling class back during the whole betrayal fiasco. After that, those Drow were let in to Arvandor, along with the faithful of Eilistraee. (That is to say, Eilistraee already had a place in Arvandor, this is just Corellon ending the forced segregation.) This occurred in the 1370s DR, though I don't remember the exact date. Point is, Corellon didn't bother to make up with Eilistraee, her followers forced the matter. For all that Corellon claims to love his daughter, he really doesn't act on it. Nevermind the whole bit where he cursed all Drow, but I'm not about to get into fantasy elf original sin.
>>
>>5383516
>A god was amused by a strange mortal, as a god is wont to be. Nothing more.
Tall poppies get cut down to size.
>>
I'm not going to be commenting on the veracity of any of these hypotheses, but I think the dedication is worth one fortune point.
>>
>>5383516
>>I challenged Malar's Huntlord to a duel, and he wished to meet the woman who bested his champion!

"Malar came to see his werebeasts hunt. He did not think that I was stronger than them. He was in awe." Bold as always, you confidently stride over to the table and place the severed werebear head atop it, right between Sten and Tenpenny. The halfling squeals like some bloated livestock animal and sinks into his cushioned seat. The Helmite paladin blinks and inclines his head, taking a drag of his cigarette. "But he did not like how we do not agree," you conclude.

"Are you trying to give me a heart attack? That thing's almost as scary as my wife, haw haw!" The Guardian dips his feather pen into an inkwell and records your account of the situation as you collect your trophy and return to the center of the council chamber. "And Willow says you had a talk about how your family ran you outta the house. Something about..." he squints at the page in confusion, or perhaps disbelief. "... getting punished with acid? That right?" You nod along. It is uncertain whether the High Ranger is covering for you or simply misinterpreted the whole situation, though you are grateful nevertheless.

For just a moment, there is a lull in the discussion as Sten works. On cue, the Corellite priestess takes the liberty of filling the silence by slandering you. "A villain such as the Beast of Beasts would see nothing in a righteous soul. The only worth that a deity such as Malar could find in a creature is their cruelty and wickedness! That she chose to collude with him is further proof of the treachery of the Dhaerow, an affront to all that is-"

"Be silent, Aradoness," admonishes Amaranth with a restrained might that you did not expect him to possess. Brandt sighs and flips the page of his chapbook, muttering something along the lines of 'Here we go again' under his breath. The priestess turns to the mage, her features softening ever-so-slightly. "Ama, it is never too late for you to mend your ways. You know in your heart of hearts that the soul of every traitor is irrevocably stained black. Naught but venom runs through the veins of this animal that stands before the council-"
>>
>>5385759
"Enough," asserts the magician coldly. Arara's brow creases as she balls her fists. His absolute rejection of her supposed truth saps whatever vigor she had, putting an end to her tirade. Vexed, she sulks in her chair. "Eheheheh!" Guffaws Dulnur, who slaps his knee, tickled by the image of the haughty elf brought low.

"Let's keep it friendly, folks," grumbles Sten with the patience of a saint. "Next order of business. I'm told you got a blessing from El-... Eil-..." The Guardian shows the paper to Amaranth, who assists him in reading the foreign word by sounding it out. "Eel-iss-tray-yee," he says, pronouncing the Ilythiiri name nearly as well as a native speaker. Sten makes a gesture, demanding more information, which the High Sorcerer readily provides. "The goddess of those who wish to return to surface life in the Realms. A lover of peace and beauty." The paladin shrugs - he obviously holds the opinion that it is pure malarkey, yet defers to the wisdom of his erudite peer. "Arright. So you got the favor of Elastree herself, white flames and all that. All I need is an official statement from you that confirms what happened for the record."

Well?
>Her followers - my people, suffered greatly at the hands of the black-bloods. We both owed them a debt of pain, and I was there to exact it on her behalf.
>I cannot claim to understand the mysteries of the gods. My prayers for aid were answered. It is just that simple.
>My sword was wreathed in magic fire, I suppose. Such thing could hardly be considered a blessing.
>Something did happen, yes; rarely do I concern myself with winning the favor of the divine, but I required all the help I could get if I was to prevail against the Malarites.

Well there was all that stuff said before about how the Church of Corellon didn't care for the Drow, but this cinches it. At least in regards to Arara. Man, I was hoping the council was more familiar with Eilistraee, but it seems that only Amaranthe knows. Perhaps Arara as well, but her knowledge is probably more in line with dogma. If Amaranthe had any doubts about Jez truly wanting to escape the Underdark and not being a spy and all, this probably got rid of them.
>>
>>5385873
Notice how it seems like Amaranth and Arara seem to have some history with each other, and how he knows about Eilistraee, despite us never mentioning the name to him. He's probably met other Drow before, both Lolthite and Eilistraean, and he likely had the same opinion Arara currently has on the subject.

So now the questions I have are, "What was the history between these two?" and "What changed his opinion on Drow?"

Standing upright, you make your feelings known in a rare show of sincerity. "The Ilythiiri lived in the forest. Far away from the Underdark. From Lolth. The black-bloods killed so many of them." You pause, grappling with your feeble command of the human language while trying to effectively convey your point. "With Eilistraee, I made them pay. For the suffering of her followers, my people."

Not a word is spoken as the Guardian commits your words to paper. You at first worry that you might have said something off-color as Arara stares daggers at you, but the paladin sets his pen down reshuffles his papers in a manner that is most procedural. "Looks like we can close the book on this one, folks. One last thing, Sindira. You did a good turn for our city, and I think it's only fair you get something good back. As a reward for your service, you are henceforth an honorary citizen of Everlund-"

The priestess again explodes into indignation with newfound verve, flying to her feet whilst slamming her hands against the table. "This is an outrage! This creature admitted to her violent ways, and you award her the same rights enjoyed by good people in our care?! Corellon as my witness-" A sardonic jeer from the Keeper slices through her rant partway. "Give it a rest, woman. Some of us would like to end this meeting today, and your sanctimonious drivel is giving me a headache."

Dulnur, who had up to this point billowed smoke and grudgingly kept his mouth shut, tears his hateful eyes away from you to direct his fury at Brandt. "Well, well, well. The Zhent shows his true colors and sticks up fer Murker o'er there. Sure love hiring drow mercs ta do yaer dirty jobs, yae do. Have yae said yaer prayers ta the Lord of Darkness today?" Greycastle's left eye twitches. "Those allegations are unsubstantiated," he retorts coolly. "Now, shall we grant her citizenship and bring this charade to a close?"

"I, for one, will not be listening to any of this!" Exclaims Arara, who quits the council chamber with a graceful stride. Sten pinches the bridge of his nose and groans. "Guess that's it for council business this tenday, all. Dismissed." Clicking his tongue, he turns to his left. "Cywir, can you hand her her credentials? I'm gonna run these papers down to the Hall of Records real quick."

The Elders go their separate ways. Tenpenny and Greycastle sequester themselves in an office a short distance from the council chamber, as Dulner and Sten make for the exit and the Hall of Records, respectively. Last is Amaranth, who provides you with a brass token upon which Elven letters are inscribed, the proof of your status as a resident of Everlund.

"Congratulations on becoming a citizen. In a few days' time, you should receive a missive that will elaborate on the details." There is an attempt on his part to smile, albeit an unsuccessful one. His visage is the face of exasperation, and there is a rough quality to his ordinarily soft inflection. "I would also like to take it upon myself to apologize to you personally. The conduct of the council was simply unacceptable today." The High Sorcerer glances at you, being at a loss for words with which to express his thoughts. "If you will excuse me."

Thus, your meeting with the Council of Elders has reached its abrupt end. What is next on the agenda?

Gotta get that werebear head out of Jez's pack before it bleeds on everything. Afterwards, I would like to meet with Ilanis for closure regarding everything with Tenpenny. Seeing how casually he groped Jez, I'd rather not be witness to reading about Ilanis being... coerced Finally if we have the chance, I'd want to meet with Amaranth so that Jez may figure out what Malar meant. I doubt she knows who "One-Eye" is considering her general lack of knowledge regarding gods outside of the Dark Seldarine/Seldarine.

"Stop," you demand. "I need your books soon. And answers." Taken aback by your assertiveness, the High Socrerer blinks, chuckling as his hand comes to rest on his chest. "You have only just recently arrived, after all," he nods. "Naturally, you will have questions. In earnest, I am unused to accomodating guests, though my doors are open to you at any time. It is the least we can do for someone who has risked so much for us. Iasa ent ivae aravae, laranlas." You don't quite grasp whatever it is that he is saying. Something about water and light? At any rate, you have been given permission to use his library and question him in the future. That, you feel, is satisfactory.

You arrive at the Evergreen Hall early in the afternoon. The still and tranquil temple of the goddess Mielikki is abustle with activity. Tens of nature-priests have gathered here, split off into groups of five or six. They plan their journey to the Silverwood, discuss the ideal methods for restoring it to its true glory, and formulate countermeasures against potential Malarite infestations in the future. Coordinating the effort is the High Ranger, who breaks away from the crowd to join you the very moment that she registers your presence.

"Well, hey!" She bumps her elbow against your arm. "Glad yer back in one piece, Sindi. Didja find what ye were lookin' fer?" The half-breed inclines her head toward you inquisitively. "No," you grumble, placing your hands at your sides. Willow smirks, taking your wrist to set a heavy purse in your hand. "Maybe this'll cheer ye up? I put somethin' special in there, just like I said. You're gonna like it!"

Peering inside, you assess your gains with wide eyes. This is a substantial amount of currency. Not only that, but together with your prize is an acorn surrounded by a dim aura of forest green. "What is this?" You ask, squinting at the object. "Well..." she trails off, running a hand through her hair as her smirk transitions into a goofy smile. "Ye were askin' me about if ye could learn ta talk with animals. So, I reckoned I could help with that. It'd take more'n a tenday to make ye a ranger, but this is the next best thing, right?" Willow details the specifics of the curio to you before she is called back to her obligations.

"Are we still going to meet at the Dreaming Dragon?" You inquire, delicately storing the Magic Acorn in your pack. "Yeah! Yeah, tonight, just as soon as I'm done with all this!" She exclaims as she is pulled back into the crowd.

Probably something that helps to teach racial spellcasting exercises, perhaps there's something to be gained through looking at how the elves of the surface do it. Or perhaps faezress has changed racial casting between drow and non-drow elves to the point that doing so is an exercise in futility. Either way, learning to actually use darkness on command in a practical manner is a boon that hardly requires explanation.

You have claimed your reward and given your account to the Council of Elders. Now, you feel, is an appropriate time to dedicate a span to yourself. There is an ache that runs through every fiber of muscle in your being, and the stench of an accomplished athlete clings to your body - and you have a strong desire to be rid of both immediately.

Dragging your feet across the city, you arrive at the luxurious Phantom Knight Inn, renting the same room as you have so many times before. Stability is more comfortable than you could have imagined in your previous life as Jezyrene Delyl. Locking the door behind you, you strip yourself down and melt away your troubles in the hot water that only the moneyed can enjoy so often; a familiar ritual that you have adopted here, during your time on the surface.

Introspection for Jez sounds nice. Would be interesting to see her thoughts on how things will go from here seeing as she's stuck on the surface for the foreseeable future. Or perhaps this will just segue into a vote where we decide on how she feels about that.

Also, seeing how Jez grew up in the underdark and all that entails, would she be paranoid enough to wear the bustenhalt under any clothing in the event she isn't going around in armor?

Digging through your backpack, you retrieve the thin book with a vibrant cover and give it a once-over. 'The Syl-pasha's Nubile Slave' is the title, and skimming its contents suggests that you should be able to read it from cover to cover in a matter of hours. Looking to improve your understanding of the language and ways of the surface-dwellers, and perchance amuse yourself, you immerse yourself in the fiction, reading aloud to help you overcome the more difficult words.

The story begins in the Western Heartlands, in an unnamed village on the rolling plains. The protagonist, a young woman of exceptional beauty named Esvele Evergreen, has come of age, and is to be wed to her 'childhood sweetheart' on the morrow. The author never elaborates on what a 'childhood sweetheart' is, leaving you in the dark in regards to what is meant by the term. Another barbaric surface-dweller euphemism for cannibalism?

Esvele's quiet agrarian lifestyle comes to an abrupt end when her village is raided by Zhentarim mercenaries on the morning of her wedding. The Zhentarim are pitiless, plundering to their hearts' content, enslaving those villagers whom they can sell for a tidy profit, and slaughtering those whom they cannot. The first act concludes with Esvele looking on in despair as her fiancé is gutted and left for the 'crows,' whatever those are, and carried off as the only home she has ever known is set ablaze.

The next chapter describes the indignities that Esvele suffers as possession of her chains trades hands again and again, until she finds herself in Calimport, the largest city in all the Realms. According to the book, it is said that Calimport is known as both the City of Glory and the City of Slaves, a broad expanse of vibrant color flecked with the glint of rare metals and bright paints on every wall and roof, all constructed atop a foundation of poverty and filth.

It is here that Esvele first meets Haseid yn Sudeimen el Jassan, Syl-Sabbalad of Sabbalads, Syl-Sultan of the Cities, Syl-Qayadin of the Armies, Syl-Ralbahr of the Navy, Syl-Pasha of All Pashas, Caleph of Our People (it seems that these are not epithets, but in fact his full title). Haseid, a man in his middle years who holds he prestigious rank of Syl-Pasha, and rules over Calimshan as its undisputed autocrat. He becomes infatuated with Esvele's rustic charm and youthful allure, purchasing the young woman with the intent of making her his slave-wife.

In his eagerness to win Esvele's favor, Haseid showers her with every delight that money can afford in the Realms and even other planes. He gifts her an opulent palace filled with slaves and performers to cater to her every need, adorns her in jewelry and clothing from the Seven Heavens of Mount Celestia, and hosts a grand banquet with a different theme each night just for her. All of this is done in vain, as Esvele sinks into a deep depression, pining for her lost love and distant home.

Her life does not remain joyless, however: one night, while her husband is preoccupied with matters of state, a rogue by the name of Zasheir yn Bashar infiltrates her palace with the intent of pilfering her extraplanar jewelry, leading to a chance encounter between the two. Zasheir is rakish young man, whose debonair and worldliness intrigues Esvele. The rogue offers to show the Syl-Pasha's wife the world outside of her palace, and she gladly accepts.

The next five chapters share a recurring theme. Esvele lives a dual life, spending half of her waking hours trying to keep the increasingly busy Haseid placated and the rest experiencing the city of Calimport with Zasheir. Together, they sample street food, visit ruins and temples, and behold the countless amazing spells that are loosed into the city by wizards on the daily. The relationship between Zasheir and Esvele grows into a friendship and, inevitably, blossoms into fiery romance. The author's verbose and curiously frequent descriptions of Esvele's carnal activities with both Haseid and Zasheir leads you to suspect that she may be living vicariously through her work, or perhaps intends for her readers to do so...
>>
>>5391651
One evening, when Zasheir sneaks into the palace to take Esvele on another adventure, they are caught out by Haseid, who fulfilled his obligations early that day. Infuriated, the Syl-Pasha turns out to be a mighty magician, raining fire and lightning down on the rogue. Zasheir, being a talented swordsman himself, becomes entangled in a hopeless duel with Haseid on the magnificent balcony that the Caleph built for his wife while the sun sets in the distance.

Though grievously wounded, Zasheir manages to win out by turning the Syl-Pasha's spell on him. Haseid yn Sudeimen el Jassan, Syl-Sabbalad of Sabbalads, Syl-Sultan of the Cities, Syl-Qayadin of the Armies, Syl-Ralbahr of the Navy, Syl-Pasha of All Pashas, Caleph of Our People (these are not epithets, but in fact his full title) is disintegrated by his own hand, and his ashes are scattered by the winds. Alas, Zasheir is doomed to die - as Esvele holds her dying love in her arms, lamenting that she has suffered the same tragedy not once, but twice, she shares a passionate kiss with the rogue as the night falls on Calimport, and the last of his life leaves his body. Inconsolable, the woman flings herself off the edge of the balcony just as her guards arrive moments too late to rescue her. Esvele's ultimate fate is left ambiguous.

Safe travels!

>Any activities besides the usual adventures that seem appealing?
A trip to the city to get our booked signed (and maybe find the sequel) seems like a nice idea. I wonder if Jez would like being a novelist, or a travelogue writer maybe?

I also wouldn't mind studying under Willow to learn ranger skills, and maybe even about her deity's worship. You never know!
>>
I wouldn't exactly call training arcs particularly appealing, but I'm interested in Jez clearing up her deficiencies regarding her racial spellcasting abilities. Darkness on command is great, stuff gained through her own power and fits with her character, yadda yadda yadda. I suppose I'm interested in seeing more of Ilanis, partly because I want to see where the whole thing with Tenpenny is going, and because I feel like her being the daughter of the previous High Sorcerer might become important in the future. (As a side note, I find it interesting that the title is "High Sorcerer" rather than High Wizard or something.)
>>
>>5392139
>is there a character that you want to see more of?
Ilanis, because I'm wondering what's going on with her and her business and what happened with her mother and father. Willow, because she might be our first actual friend.

>Any activities besides the usual adventures that seem appealing?
As I mentioned in my suggestion, a trip to Calimsham might be in order, in order to find that sequel. Definitely raising that Drow paladin we found in the cave temple too, for some help finding the silver moon, along with fighting off One Eye. Perhaps even a visit to Myth Drannor to summon the long dead writer of The Pretty Princess, to learn how he actually died and to learn the sequel's ending and ghostwrite it for him.

For a hobby, writing might be a good one, along with tailoring or learning an instrument.
>>
>>5392166
I did mention prior that there was a fighting style paired with the drow's innate ability to cast the Darkness spell. The standard tactic that they learn in the Underdark relies on coordinating with an entire team using different weapons to get the most out of it, so reacquiring it would necessitate shifting her strategy more toward depending on others and teamwork.

>>5392181
Anon, I... Calimshan is on the other side of the continent. Merely getting there could be an entire separate quest!
>>
>>5392204
>Calimshan is on the other side of the continent.
Oh, right... Well, in that case we'll just talk to the spirit of the author, learn what they had written, and finish writing it for them, then print it out and sell it as a sequel pieced together from leftover notes and ideas by his family. I'm sure the current owner of that one-of-a-kind manuscript won't mind at all, and absolutely wouldn't want our head on a platter!
>>
>>5392204
It's not that I'm expecting Jez to use it for team tactics, it's the utility I'm interested in. Using it to block line of sight to get past enemy spellcasters or archers, using it to escape by blinding everyone, casting darkness and dropping a bomb then hightailing it out of the blast radius, etc. There's just so many situations that one can benefit from when given the ability to just get rid of enemy line of sight on demand. There's also the route of just learning blind fighting, but that's a bit of a tall order.
>>
>>5392139
>Any activities besides the usual adventures that seem appealing?

Full blown hedonism; drugs, shrooms, boys, massages, the pleasures we used to experience in the Underworld.
>>
>>5391653
>This is drivel pandering to lonely females and I am ashamed of myself for reading it to the end.
Jez sneers to herself. "She should have picked up a blade and slain the Syl-Pasha herself. Cheap drivel that could stand being rewritten!

>>5392139
Hmm, more of a long term thing but I'd like to see Jez learn draconic, possible with the aid of Amaranth's library, given her interests. Also, it would be fun if she could start forming more of a stable "adventuring group" though I don't think it would be a classical adventuring group, perhaps more a stable of people she could bring together for high value missions. For example, I'd say, Willow and Amaranth would be a good start, but they are all high ranking people in this place themself so it probably wouldn't work?
As a former military commander, perhaps it would be more natural for Jez to think of it like she's starting a small military/mercenary outfit.

An opportunity to test the magical acorn would be great, who hasn't played DND and dreamed of getting an owlbear cub.

Also, completely personal thing, but I preferred the old character portrait - probably because the waist looks a bit uncanny in the current one. No biggie though, I can still use mentally use the old pic.

... That was it? That was the entire story? The novel's sudden end leaves you with more questions than answers. Esvele's lovers fought, and she commits suicide. Or perhaps tries to - the author never elucidates. You slip the book into your backpack and retrieve your silk dress and the accompanying slippers while doing so. Tonight seems like an appropriate occasion to put it to use. Even in your youth, you were afforded little time to be 'womanly,' having always been entangled in some violent business or another. Such is the warrior's lot in life.

While dressing, you review the story a second time in your mind. None of your lovers ever purchased you a palace, or took you out to explore an exotic city. More often than not, your couplings lasted a few months at most, hardly a meaningful span for the Ilythiiri, and ended when your business took you elsewhere, or with them trying to assassinate you, or some possessive woman making an attempt on your life to 'take back what is hers.' Flinging yourself into a pit of spikes because someone you had copulated with met an untimely end seems unthinkable. Can such a deep passion for another person truly exist, or is it purely fictitious?

Is there a love worth dying for?

Enough philosophizing. It is dark out, and you will be trying your hand at this 'friendship' business that surface-dwellers seem so enamored with. Confidently, you strut over to the Dreaming Dragon, encountering a sign hanging on the front entrance which reads 'CLOSED FOR PRIVATE EVENT.' Regardless, you have come too far to be denied, and rap against the door.

Greeting you is Ilanis, as lively as the day you met her. Unprompted, she grabs you by the wrist and pulls you inside, slamming the door behind you. "Sindi, you're late! We've been waiting for you!" The girl points to the bar, which the exhausted High Ranger leans on while seated lazily on a stool. "See? I told you she would show up!"

"Ila, ye're the one what kept sayin' she forgot." Willow nods toward you. "Liar!" The girl retorts, dragging you halfway across the building. Before you even realize it, you are standing by the bar with an exotic fizzy drink in your hand. "I closed up early today, so it's just us girls. Woo woo!" Exclaims Ilanis, who sets down similar beverages for Willow and herself.

"Ain'tcha bit young fer the hard drinks, kiddo?" Asks the ranger, half-teasing. Ilanis puffs her cheeks and sticks her tongue out. "Shaddap! Ah'm uh full grown wummin, 'n' don't yoo ferget it!" She says, poking fun at Willow's accent. The two burst out in laughter before turning toward you. "So, Sindi? What's been going on with you?"

>Any activities besides the usual adventures that seem appealing?
Personally I love the 'fish out of water' aspect of the quest and would like to see more emphasis on it.
Jez has been raised in the paranoia and sociopathy of Drow society - a place where everyone is a potential enemy, lives other than your own have value only in what they can offer you and extreme cruelty (even within families) is a fact of life and your mother. I wouldn't want to see her adjusting to the surface or picking up surfacer morals too quickly - 200-odd years living that life should carry some inertia. She might not necessarily like two Zhents on the council but she at least understands how they operate, similarly the unthinking hatred of Arara or Dulnur makes a lot more sense - is much more in-tune with the reception she might have expected, especially from a surfacer elf - than Amaranth or Ila's compassion.

You find a stool on which to seat yourself and allow your weight to indolently fall atop it. "I met with the council today. My head still hurts." Raising the glass to your lips, you take a sip of the chilled beverage. Fruity and bitter and sweet race down your throat, leaving behind a sensation that is at once burning and glacial. "The worst ones were Dulnur and that darthiir, Arara. Vith'nindel waelen darthiir elg'caress wun l'norrs dra'ena!"

"What!" Ilanis throws her hands up, nearly spilling her drink over the counter. She cannot understand what you are saying - for the better - but your words seem angry enough to make her reaction appropriate. "Aunt Ara is the nicest person I know! She helped take care of me after my father disappeared! A- and we used to sing songs together!" Willow drinks down half of her beverage in one go, belching as she relaxedly sets her glass onto the counter. The woman offers her perspective. "Sure y'all didn't jus' get off on the wrong foot? Ara's always done right by all us here. Even got on her knees 'n' helped me pick weeds outta the temple garden once or twice."

"Nau! Vith'nindel elg'caress!" You insist, mildly frustrated to learn that your grievances are not shared by all. It was logical, now that you consider it. Of course the Corellite would go out of her way to offer succor to 'her' people, even the half-breeds. Her animosity was naturally reserved for her most hated enemy, the Ilythiiri. Taking another sip to lower your inhibitions, you go on. "The harpy would not shut up. She said to throw me out of the city, and I could say nothing without her yelling back. She was so mad that she left! That paladin had to end the meeting."

The girl is dumb with silence, but Willow leans in closer, deeply intrigued by your recount of the drama that played out earlier today. "No shit? Oft Darkshadow's the one what ain't say nothin' that don't amount ta a hill of beans." You blink, trying in vain to comprehend the stream of gibberish that the High Ranger just spat in your direction. "What?" Tipping her drink back, she finishes the rest and sets the empty glass on the table, wiping her mouth. "He talks a lotta shit," she clarifies.

"Oh."

"And Amaranth - he is... different," you say, failing to properly articulate just how peculiar the man is. By all accounts, he should detest you even more than Arara, and mages are not famed for their civility, pretended or otherwise. "That man's too good fer this world," says Willow. "When he ain't lockin' hisself up in that tower he's got, at least. Jus' wish the rest of the Elders could come 'round ta his way of thinkin'."

"Yeah! When I was little, he always used to give me magic trinkets while he was studying under my father. And after my father disappeared, he even started coming to the Dreaming Dragon just to make sure I'm okay!" If you were to estimate how long ago that was using the girl's age... she must have known Amaranth for an entire century. "It seemed like he knows Arara," you say, hoping that the girl could offer her insight on the relation between the two.

"Well, yeah. They used to adventure together with my dad. Hey, now that I think about it, they were really good friends!" An interesting choice of words. You decide to inquire further. "Were?" You raise an eyebrow. "No more?" Ilanis places her hands on her forehead, both eyes wide as though she's had a revelation. "Huh. I guess they stopped talking to each other a long time ago? Even way before my father went missing..."

The pieces are falling into place. Arara and Amaranth used to ply the adventurer's trade, together with Ilanis' father Korfel, and perhaps a few others. Something happened between the two of them that soured relations, and they have not been on speaking terms since. The question then is, just what was it that caused the schism between the two?

You offer the most colorful play-by-play of your meeting with the Council of Elders that your proficiency with the surfacer language allows, answering questions as you go. Who are the Ilythiiri? Is saying 'drow' really that bad? Apparently Tenpenny is something of a sleazy womanizer? What is Eilistraee, and how do you pronounce that?

"... and then," you take one last gulp, and slam the emptied glass on the counter, "she says 'I will not listen to this!' And left!" Ilanis, who is only halfway finished with her drink, sets it down carefully and claps. "Congratulations on becoming a citizen!" She cheers, contributing her more optimistic take on the events. "That means you can buy a house in the city. Or maybe a mansion? Oh! Oh!" The girl eagerly slaps her palms against the counter. "That means you can run for Speaker of the Town!"

"Wouldn't that be somethin'?" Asks Willow, already partways through her second drink. "'Sindiira Torani, Speaker of the Town.' Got a real ring ta it." It is clear that the priestess is already a mildly inebriated as she points toward you and offers a bold suggestion. "Hey, ye're gonna be a celebrity when the werebear fight goes public. Why don'tcha try it? It's about darn time we get someone that ain't a shriveled-up hunk'a rock fer Speaker."

Hmm... you are feeling a bit inebriated yourself...

>Although I’d love to see the look on Dulnur’s and Arara’s face when they’d hear about me thinking of running… or hells, when they’d hear the results!

I’m absolutely sure that Dulnur would run against us if Jez were to announce (or even spread rumors of) her intention to run for Speaker. He’s like a bull in his dislike for us, charging heedlessly with a wave of our cape. Win, we’d have beaten Dulnur and shown Arara how much the town wants to keep us around, lose, and Dulnur gets to stay on a council he dislikes, continuing to aggravate Arara, and he’ll only have himself to blame!
>>
>>5397805
>Deal with that headache every day for seven years? I think not!

Nevermind how Jez's younger sister would 100% find a way to sow discord by using the fact that they're only attacking Everlund because her sister is hiding in there. There's also the whole very warranted hate of Drow all over the surface, getting rid of that in any capacity would be required before trying to run for a public position. The idea that Jez is here to just infiltrate Everlund is enough to prevent any political aspirations.

Ethanol-induced remembrances of the woman you once were swim through your vision. A leader of warriors, and an instructor who taught the art of war. Truthfully, you held no tangible authority over others; that distinction belonged exclusively to the priestesses and the mages, or those celebrities who distinguish themselves as exceptional. Even a lowly slave can become an influential figure among the Ilythiiri, provided they are useful or entertaining enough. Yet the blood and sweat you poured into your trade has earned you naught but exhausting marches, treacherous students, and an empty belly.

Could your fortunes reverse?

You imagine yourself, not as Jezyrene, but as Sindiira, sitting in the council chamber, arguing your position and dictating your laws. While you haven't the slightest clue as to what your policies are, they are no doubt very important. Rightfully, you are feared by the citizens of Everlund - perhaps even respected by those who elected to grant you power? It is a pleasant daydream. Alas, whether or not you wish to pursue this fate is not a question that you are prepared to answer.

"Maybe. I need time to think more."

"Come aaaaahn!" Shouts Ilanis, whose face is now flush. The girl cannot handle her liquor, as evident by the clumsy manner in which she begins preparing more drinks. "If I was Speaker, I would make a law that... uh, I'm not sure yet, but I'd do it!" Cupping both hands over her mouth, she suppresses a burp.

"Wouldn't doubt'cha, Ila." Willow, by contrast, seems to be faring much better. She turns to you and scratches her head. "Better take yer time and think real hard, Sindi. We still gots till winter when the election starts." Winter? Presently, is it late in the summer, leaving you with all of autumn to mull over your future. "Maybe," you state plainly, cracking a rare smirk. "A place to rest is good to me. But I want to see Dulnur and the darthiir if I do try. And if I win..." you cackle to yourself, picturing their impotent rage as your strut triumphantly about the city.

The minutes soar by as the three of you chat the night away. Willow brings out the cards, and the three of you play as Ilanis works to ensure that all of you always have an alcoholic beverage nearby. Slowly but surely, you are approaching an enlightened state.

You are not drunk. Most likely. Perhaps a bit.

Hmm, I didn't have anything specific in mind for this scenario. But, Willow is a forest woman from a no-name farm town in the swamp who probably lost her virginity to her second cousin, so I'd imagine that her entire wardrobe is a healthy mix between "whatever hand-me-downs she got from her family" and "whatever animal she killed the other day."

Ilanis, on the other hand, is a tenuously middle-class young woman from a trade city with poor self-control, so I picture her closet as full of "budget fashion" items that she bought on impulse and only wore once in the same vein as pic related.

"I read a book," you mention offhandedly as Willow somehow manages to win again. "The Syl-pasha's Nubile Slave." The cards are reshuffled, and the next game begins. "Woah, I read that one too!" Chirps Ilanis. "My favorite part is when Esvele and Zasheir kiss while the sun sets over Calimport. That scene is sooo romantic! I wonder if a charming rogue will appear to take me away someday..." The girl hiccups and looks wistfully toward the large windows that provide a clear view of the night sky and the crystals that inhabit the roofless void above.

Willow snorts. "Y'all know that's jus' junk fer lonely women what ain't gettin' any, right?" Ilanis slaps her hand against the counter in retaliation and bites back. "You're just mad 'cuz all you have are those 'furbabies' that you always talk about! You're never going to meet a dashing man like Zasheir if you keep spending all of your time with eagles and wolves." The High Ranger is not having it. She drinks deeply of her cocktail and sighs. "Ila, darlin', men like that only want one thing, 'n' I ain't talkin' 'bout no 'romance.'"

You clear your throat. "The ending, I do not understand. Zasheir is killed, and Esvele says that she cannot live without him. She wants death, and jumps from a high place to die. Why?" Glancing at each of them, you deduce that you are about to receive contradictory answers.

"That's called 'love,' Sindi." The priestess finishes off her sixth drink. You reason that she must have some form of alcohol poisoning now, or perhaps her goddess has blessed her with supernatural tolerance. "It's kinda like a disease that makes ye inta an idiot." Predictably, the girl immediately tries to rebut the claim. "Don't listen to her, Sindi. Love is the most wonderful feeling in all the Realms! You just need to find the right person. All of it will finally make sense when you meet them!"

"We do not have this where I am from," you clarify, much to the amazement of both of them. You explain how fast-paced the life of an Ilythiiri is; always are your people involved in some struggle or intrigue, learning the pain of ever-present hardship. Attachments, if they exist, are fleeting, and the wealth and alliances that one accrues over decades can be taken away in an instant. The troubled expressions that both of them make as they digest this knowledge tells all - Ilanis even goes out of her way to proclaim that the way of your kin is 'the saddest thing ever, in all of history.'

Well, then? How are they so different? Why, are they so different? However the priestesses of Lolth tried to suppress information pertaining to other cultures, you have traveled the Underdark enough to know that there are other people in this world with traditions and ideas that diverge from yours. Additionally, seeking shelter among these surfacers has already 'contaminated' you, so-to-speak. So, you fold your arms and demand that Ilanis explain her darthiir ways. You must learn them to comprehend the ending of the book for... purely academic purposes.

The girl espouses the joys of connecting with other beings of all kinds, and the importance of cultivating lasting friendships. How once, her people thought to isolate themselves from the world, only to discover that the world would move on without them in their absence. Many have since returned, reintegrating the elven people into the wider society of the Realms. She tells of the beautiful weddings that her kin host for those whose bonds blossom into love, and how life is worth living because the beauty found in the world can draw so many hearts together.

Even the half-breed concurs, speaking fondly of her family. Willow tells stories of how her parents looked after her - even if she did outgrow their coddling eventually. You, however, make it abundantly clear that there is no shared affection between yourself and the blood relatives who had you whipped, beaten, and and doused with acid. Ilanis remarks that this, too, is 'the saddest thing ever, in all of history.'
>>
>>5401377
"Think I'm gonna call it a night, ladies." Willow yawns, downing the last gulp of her seventh cocktail for the night before collecting her cards. "It's been a real one, but I gots work in the mornin'." Ilanis hiccups, wiping a drop of drool from her chin. "Yeah. I'm- I'm gonna get some water and close up. I think the Dreaming Dragon's gonna have to open late tomorrow..." In earnest, you are feeling a bit unwell yourself. A century prior, you could quaff half a dozen servings of alcohol that tasted like industrial byproduct and feel no ill effect, but those days are far behind you.

"I am going too," you sigh, rising uneasily. You start for the door right behind Willow, but Ilanis calls out to you from behind the counter. "Wait, Sindi! You forgot, uh... wait, let me remember..." Shuffling through drawers of utensils, the girl produces a small purse that emits a familiar jingle, passing it over to you. She slaps your shoulder playfully and smiles. "Now get outta here."

It is late in the day. The three of your part - for now - and you leave the Dreaming Dragon for Everlund's night air. Where do you go from here?

Tonight's events have given you much to consider. Being around others and simply... talking with them, is strange. You shuffle through the city's streets to the Phantom Knight, carrying with you a heavy ambivalence. One which you will not be dealing with any time soon; whatever it was that Ilanis put in those glasses of fruity, fizzy, yummy death, it is making it nigh impossible for you to form a cohesive thought.

Barging into your room, you slam the door behind you and fumble with the lock. Throwing yourself onto the bed, you snuggle up with the Dark Fantasy as a precaution, not even bothering to remove your dress or slippers as fatigue beats down on you. You press your head against the pillow and drool as your eyelids grow heavy, and you pass from the waking world into the unconscious one...

Phaere trudges clumsily into the workshop, a symmetrical space so perfectly proportioned that it is in many ways uncanny. Here, the metaphysical rigidity of this plane far exceeds that of the Prime Material. The omnipresence of absolute order is as extramundane anathema to her and her magics, exerting an almost psychic pressure on the woman's mind. Forcing a smile, she straightens her back and folds her arms, a self-soothing gesture. "Is it done, guvner?"

"Absolutely, madam. We've refurbished it just as requested. Rush job or no, we strive to complete everything exactly on time here." The engineer, a stocky gnomish man of advanced age wearing a pair of grease-stained overalls, seizes the tarp concealing his work. With gusto, he pulls it back, unveiling a powerfully built construct fashioned in the shape of a large felid.

"Is it truly as deadly as I am told?" Asks Phaere, as she runs her hand over the cold metallic surface of her new acquisition. Fifty-thousand gold pieces: that is how much currency she expended on this project, enough wealth to build herself a new tower, and she expects to get her money's worth. The engineer guffaws, pridefully stroking his beard as he marvels at his work. "It sure is, Miss Delyl. Faith may move mountains, but science can reduce them to rubble." Gleefully, he passes the dark elf a clipboard and a pen, stretching his arm upwards to provide guidance. "It's all yours. I'm just going to need you to sign here, here, here, here, and here. Sign and date here, and..."

Documenting her purchase in ink, she smiles at the wonderful machine. Things are about to get very fun for her beloved sister!

The temple of Mielikki is the Evergreen Hall. The All-Faiths Hall is a place with shrines for some surface gods that don't have temples in the city. A minority of anons have wanted to see what's there in the pretty consistently, so I've been leaving it as an option.

And who knows, Jez might even take a liking to one of them, or decide to bargain for their help in some way.

You carefully store your dress and don your armor, securing the Dark Fantasy to your hip. Throwing your hood over your head, you leave behind the comforts of the Phantom Knight Inn and dare to brave full might of the morning sun. Whatever designs you have for the future, they will have to be put on hold for the time being. To you, it is of the greatest import that you unravel the mysteries of the One-Eye and the Silver Moon.

Consulting the High Sorcerer seems the most apposite course of action. Regardless of his reasons, he has been quick to offer assistance at no expense to you, a most unusual behavior idiosyncratic not to the surface-dwellers, but to him specifically. The idea of ingratiating yourself to the city's most powerful wizard has crossed your mind more than once as of late. If and how you actually intend to do so is indeterminate, but you reason that you are capable of navigating that tunnel when you get to it.

Growing accustomed to seeking the mage's wisdom, you pass through the portal that connects Everlund to Amaranth's retreat, a tranquil place removed from the troubles of the Realms, yet the Ar-tel-quessir does not greet you today. Only the sound of wind disturbs the quietude of this place, a strong indicator that you are alone here at present.

What to do...

Would be nice if we could simply ask as Amaranth is rather well learned, but at the same time keeping the exact words of what Malar told us to ourselves is a good thing. I doubt Amaranth is the type to cast Jez out due to her presence being a reason for Everlund getting swarmed by Orc hordes and some Drow, but who knows if he's obligated to talk to others that don't share the same feelings, such as those on the council.

Committed to your goal, you open the hefty tome titled 'FAITHS & AVATARS 2ND EDITION' and skim its contents. Your first thought is to look at the table of contents, and perchance an index should there be anything of the sort, checking for any mention of the terms in which you have an interest. No references to silver, or a moon, or an eye. For lack of alternatives, you begin the arduous task of skimming each page in the hope of happening upon something relevant. And happen you do - after several minutes, it seems that you have found a promising lead.

... While enlightening, your search ultimately turns up absolutely nothing pertinent to your needs. You know as much about the elusive 'silver moon' and the cryptic 'one-eye' as you did half an hour ago. Frustrating, to say the very least.

As you begin to contemplate your next action, a tear in the fabric of space heralds the arrival of your host, Amaranth. The man appears weary, with his hair slightly messy and his eyelids partially closed. Despite this, he still manages to stand at attention to address you, bowing politely as he does so. "It is good to see you again, Sindiira. I knew someone had arrived not so long ago, though you are the only person who comes here so frequently." He smiles bitterly, as if remembering something distinctly unpleasant. "There is, of course, my apprentice Lael, though he is..." the High Sorcerer sighs.

"An exceptionally unique individual. Should you ever meet him, please try to see past his proclivities - he is a good child. For the most part." Recognizing that he is speaking to himself more than you, he claps his hands together and nods. "Ah, never mind. You must have come here for a reason. Is there something I can assist you with?"

You may choose no more than three.

"I look for a place. The 'silver moon.' I hear my people went there." Amaranth places a finger on his chin in thought, making a near-instantaneous deduction from what little information you've provided. "That must be Silverymoon, the Gem of the North. It is city only a few days away from Everlund by foot - and the capital of our confederation."

His expression becomes grave as he considers the matter further. "If the enclave of Eilistraeans that fled the Silverwood after the Malarites arrived hoped to find succor there, I am afraid that would not have been the case. It saddens me to say this, but under most circumstances your people are denied entry."

More complications, as always. With your ill luck, you would be amazed if there were not more obstacles to hinder you on your quest. If the Ilythiiri thought to seek shelter in Silverymoon only to be turned away, then the survivors could easily be anywhere by now. "There is another forest north of Silverymoon, a counterpart to the Silverwood known as the Moonwood. It is plausible that your people thought to conceal themselves there," he offers in consolation. There is but one way for you to find out.

"And the One-Eye," you insist. "I must know more about the One-Eye." Another question that the High Sorcerer has a ready answer for. "Ghaunadaur's symbol is a single eye, and he is sometimes referred to as the Elder Eye or the Ancient One, though I assume that you are wondering about Gruumsh. He is the patriarch of the orcish pantheon. Alas, information pertaining to him is scarce - his priests are neither talkative nor in the habit of writing at length."
>>
>>5407695
Orcs. You must have fought the ferocious greenskins in melee dozens of times by now. Say what one will about their culture or lack thereof, even you can acknowledge the skill and tenacity of a veteran orc warrior. If Vierna truly means to make allies of their ilk, then you are in a more precarious position than you had first suspected. "And Eilistraee as well. I must know about her."

"My, you are so curious. One moment - I have something here that can explain everything far better than I could." With a wave of his hand, he beckons for a decaying paperback resting at the top of a stack of similar books to approach. Under his command, it soars across the room until it occupies the space between the two of you, coming to rest in midair.

Up close, you see the title 'DEMIHUMAN DEITIES' printed in plain text on the utilitarian cover. "This one is aged and in poor condition, so I decided to prune it from the collection. You are more than welcome to keep this one for yourself," he hums, offering you the book with an earnest smile.
>>

"Why?" You ask, taking the object into your hands as your gaze meets his own. "You are a good abban to me. For a male," you tack on awkwardly. "Very different from other people. Explain." The magician closes his eyes and folds his arms, wearing a stern expression as he mulls over your query before his smile returns. "That..." he sighs, "is quite the story, albeit not a very enthralling one. Suffice to say, the last thing I wish to do is bore you with old anecdotes."

Something that he does not want to discuss, then. Understandable, it is not as though you are loquacious either. Perchance you could try asking again some other time? You decide to change the subject. "Are you..." you cough. "You look... what I am asking is... you are my abban, so if you are not well, I could..." The developing neurosis that you've been harboring ever since your quest to slay the Huntlord is manifesting again. You are being an idiot, and your face suddenly feels incredibly warm.

"Do I truly look so terrible? Your concern is touching, but it is nothing so serious. Lael is an incredibly gifted student of the Art, but his spells tend to go awry on occasion. Being his teacher, I feel that it is my responsibility to reign them in." He laughs, gesturing at his face. "As you have correctly deduced, it is a demanding task at times, yet nothing that I am incapable of."

Right. It was nothing. And you are the fool for asking. What now, Jezyrene?

>Awkwardly: "If I go to Silverymoon, or Moonwood, is there something I could bring back from there, or deliver there, for you, as thanks?"

Later I would suggest trying to find a caravan or something like that, traveling companions, if we are planning on any longer journey. Safety in numbers.

>For now, I would continue speaking with Amaranth, and think of ways to curry favor with him.

Always funny to see Jez shy away from using terms of endearment. Perhaps one day she'll use abbil in a non sarcastic manner. Jez now knows that her sister is trying to ally with Orcs, and her own experience would let her know that likely involves an all out attack. I suppose the next big character defining moment for her involves whether or not Jez leaves Everlund to be attacked, or tries to save it.

"Is there anything else I can assist you with?" He asks while straightening his hair. Alright if there's anyone who could potentially help Jez out with racial spells it's probably Amaranth. Him being an elf and a magic user (Still not sure if this guy is a wizard or a sorcerer, or just both considering his title of "High Sorcerer") should also potentially help with getting past the whole faezress changing magic bit. Also Jez potentially learning a bit of magic to become the ultimate anti-mage considering her mage killer trait sounds cool.

He is a wizard. The root word of his title ("faern") universally refers to any practitioner of the Art, so it could be translated as either wizard or sorcerer, which may be a source of confusion. This is also one of the words that is mostly the same in the Drow language, with "faern" meaning "magic-worker."

I mean, dude’s an elf wizard. If humans can only become one after thirty years of virginity, as an elf aiming to be a wizard you gotta either have a will of adamantine and lightning fast reflexes to not want and avoid every chance to get lay for however long it would take, or you’d have some sort of curse that prevents you from getting any sort of ass in some way.

Looking Amaranth up and down again, you reason that he is about the same age as you. Over the many years that you have dwelled the Underdark, you have seen so much. The bones of dead civilizations, and the oddities of still-living ones, all different from the Ilythiiri. Nature's wonders, which awed even you with their splendor.

And now you are come to this world, a foreigner whose boots tread alien soils. Willing or no, curiosity possesses you - what better way to sate it than to listen to the tales of a settled adventurer? "You have walked the Realms for long. Tell me of your travels."

The High Sorcerer is caught off-guard by your request, but his visage conveys that he is more than happy to oblige. "Have you heard of Tashalar, Sindiira?" You shake your head. So many names have you heard of surfacer lands, yet there are always ever more. "Ah. This way, please. There is something that I would like you to see." Humming to himself, Amaranth begins ascending the spiral staircase, beckoning you to follow.

Cywir guides you to a table encircled by stacks of books, upon which rests a map of the Realms in near-mint condition. He points out your current location in the north, the Silver Marches, to provide you with a reference point. The illustration that you see challenges many fundamental assumptions that you have long held about the world. All of it is so... expansive, varied, unique. And you are small.

Your host tells of the bygone Tashtan Empire, and how their descendants have carved out a prosperous existence for themselves in an exotic forest known as a jungle. How before them, pockets of ancient Ilythiiri used to inhabit the region, and how today Tashalar is a land of breezy gardens and vineyards and groves. It is said that the grapes of Tashalar are so exquisite that a single bottle of the lowest quality Tashalaran wine is worth a hundred gold pieces in other lands. You are shown paintings and sketches of indigenous flora and fauna, as well as the local humans, who differ remarkably from those in the north in both appearance and dress.

Then come the stories. Of how he and his cohorts quested in these jungles for gold and glory and giant gems. Of the reclusive and peaceful giants that inhabit the mountains, who share the wisdom of ages in exchange for fine wine. His favorite adventure here involves defeating a tribe of yuan-ti - a wicked serpentine species shackled to the will of their dark gods - who thought to further their machinations by meddling in a then-ongoing succession crisis.
>>
>>5410546
"Listen to me ramble," he chuckles as the two of you begin to descend the staircase. "I am sure that my stories are terribly, terribly boring. Whatever the reason for your inquiries, it must mean that you are on a quest, and I've certainly delayed you enough." On the contrary, there is one more thing your would like to ask about.

"No. I need..." you start, choking on sentence that never escapes your mouth. You would sooner be sentenced to an eternity of punishment in the Nine Hells than be so weak as to use the dreaded H-Word to entreat the aid of another, especially a male, and rack your brain for a suitable workaround. Biting your lip, your frustrated manner draws a worried stare from Amaranth. "Is something troubling you?" He asks.

"The surface-dweller language is not easy for me," you growl, crossing your arms. "I need to know it better. And I want to learn more of this- this..." you wave your hand vaguely. "This 'Art.' That is magic that you are talking about, yes?"

Amaranth places his hands on his hips, evaluating you with a circumspect eye. "I suppose that I am not too busy, after all. Lael was a mage even before seeking me out, so he only requires my advisement. It is said that one good turn deserves another. Please return another day, and we can see if you have the requisite talent."

The simple fact is that you are in no position to make demands. The High Sorcerer's magnanimity is anomalous, doubly so given the historical divide between your peoples, yet you are not one to look a free lizard in the mouth. Straightening your posture, you speak, this time with confidence. "You are a good abban. If your enemies want to hurt you, I will be there to kill them."

He blinks. "... Thank you, Sindiira. That's.... very considerate of you."

Considerate? You? Never!

... Perhaps a little.

Parting ways with Amaranth, you exchange the placid mystique of the High Sorcerer's redoubt for the vibrancy of Everlund's active marketplace. There is a certain benefit to being in this surface trade city that you have come to appreciate. The steady flow of wares from distant lands allows for a smorgasbord of color and scent and sound that is never twice the same.

Alas, you are still constrained to that which is within your means. Despite your impressive feats of derring-do, the funds at your disposal remain rather modest. The arsenal of exotic magic weapons and treasure trove of wondrous arcane items remains tragically beyond your reach... for the time being.

The rococo dress is the most important item here. Otherwise I really want Jez to get a book with pens as a way to prepare for Amaranth's tutelage. The idea of her hopefully buying items that might help with that to only have her dreams be either crushed or luckily successful sounds fun.

Also Jez really needs to do something with the Huntlord's head before it starts getting goopy and ruins everything on her person.

When you arrived in Everlund, you had naught but your weapon and the clothes on your back. Now with money to spare, what better time to - how do the surface-dwellers say it? 'Live a little?' You browse today's wares for anything that might catch your eye, while remaining frugal with your fortune. First is something essential, a potion that can hide your tracks and conceal your scent, a boon to any individual that is being hunted.

There is wine of course, imported from the city of Berdusk. That is in the Heartlands, where Willow is from, is it not? And more perfume, to replace the bottle which was expended during your duel with Malar's priest - the peddler alleges that this one, dedicated to the goddess of love herself, is guaranteed to make you twenty times more delectable. Why these savage human folk have such a great fondness for devouring one another, you will simply never understand. Those instances in which you can recall supping on the flesh other Ilythiiri were purely a matter of survival.

On to the matter of rebuilding your wardrobe. Fitting hosiery are a necessity for any fashionable woman, together with a makeup kit that includes an armory of hair care accessories. You also happen across a scanty single-piece garment advertised as 'Drow Swimwear,' which was doubtless made with spider silk woven by talented Ilythiiri hands. How it found its way here is a mystery, though it will be of use, should the opportunity for a recreational swim present itself.

That is everything for today, you believe...

A metaphorical forest of fabrics on display steals your attention. Exotic dresses that differ dramatically from the slim, minimal garments that you are accustomed to are set out to be sold. In fact, these articles bear a striking resemblance to the ones described in that Pretty Princess novel that you read over a tenday ago. "The dusky blademistress returns again to grace my wares with her coin!" The menacingly fashionable gnome who had cajoled you into purchasing the bustenhalt seems to materialize from the shadows nearby.

"I see that you are interested in one of our most coveted products. This dress is very popular in Sembian high society as of late. It does wonders in bringing out a lady's femininity. Why, even a svelte woman such as yourself could appear full-figured for the low-low price of twenty-four gold pieces!" 'Full' figured? Is he implying that your... proportions are somehow deficient? You may not be as 'gifted' in that regard as other women, but- never mind that. "I am full-figured," you doggedly insist. Were it not for the laws of this land, it is very likely that you would strike him across the face. "Of that, I have no doubt. Now, would you like it in red and white, or white and gold?"

In the end, you walk away from the encounter with less money, a new dress, and the shadow of regret looming over you. Now what?

>Enough meandering. I feel that I am adequately prepared to continue my search for the Eilistraeans.
>The surface-dwellers must have some sort of transportation available. Could I find someone to take me most of the way to Silverymoon?
>I should take the time to visit the All-Faiths Hall, to better acquaint myself with the surface gods, lest I continue courting their wrath.
>In earnest, I am in no great hurry. I will seek out a quiet spot to enjoy some light reading.
>There is something else that I would like to do. [Write-in.]

Regarding buying books, I feel that we have enough reading material for the foreseeable future, though if enough people feel that we really need to then I suppose it's an option on the table.

I'm hoping that this means later rather than sooner as we still have to meet with Amaranth to see if we have the requisite talent for magic. Also please tell me we got shopping bags or something, if the Huntlord's head leaks out onto the dress then EVERYTHING is lost. Would we ever have a chance at buying a bag of holding? Our inventory is getting rather large.

>Those instances in which you can recall supping on the flesh other Ilythiiri were purely a matter of survival.

That depends. Autumn and winter holidays are right around the corner, and Jez may or may not explore high society. Provided Lolth doesn't eat her first, of course.

With your copy of Demihuman Deities in hand, you find a bench in a city square and seat yourself. Where you are from, entering such open spaces carries the risk of being hunted by nobles for sport, captured by slavers to be sold off, or accosted by priestesses and sacrificed to Lolth. However much the sunlight roasts your eyes and irritates your skin, it is an undeniable fact that its radiance makes it prohibitively difficult for any would-be assailants to conceal themselves in the usual places, a welcome deviation from the norm.

Thumbing through the pages, you take 'demihuman' to mean 'non-human,' as the powers referenced in this work are arranged by pantheon, each specifically relevant to a certain race. Dwarves, gnomes, elves... even a section dedicated to the full 'Drow Pantheon.' The choice of diction makes it painfully obvious that human hands penned these words - you will simply have to trust that the authors did their research, then. Here you find sections dedicated to Ghaunadaur, the Elder Eye, and even Vhaerun, the Masked Lord. For good reason, Lolth's chapter is the largest, and... right here, information about Eilistraee.

Eilistraee (pronounced Eel-iss-TRAY-yee), known also as the Dark Maiden, the Lady of Dance, and Lady Silverhair, is the goddess of those drow who wish to return to the surface world, to inhabit the woodlands they left behind so long ago. Being the daughter of Corellon and Araushnee (who would later become Lolth), her portfolio includes song, dance, swordwork, and hunting. The book describes her personality as melancholy and moody, with a great love of peace, though wickedness stokes a burning anger in her soul.
>>
>>5417809
Her aim is to reestablish the drow as rightful inhabitants of the surface world, and to reintegrate them into Realms society by fostering harmony and goodwill between all races. They do so by nurturing beauty wherever they can through song and dance, assisting others through acts of kindness when possible, and utilizing their skill with weapons and hunting to destroy evil wherever it is found. As often as possible, her faithful are to share food with hungry travelers, and offer what money they can spare to priestesses and those in need.

The Eilistraeans are figures of myth, both in the lands of light and in the Underdark. Above, mistruths abound of the mysterious dark elves, who are said to be agents of the Spider Queen working to plunge the Realms into an age of darkness under her rule. Below, Lolth's priestesses work diligently to quash rumors of Eilistraee, calling her followers infiltrators from the surface preparing for the coming war of annihilation, if they exist at all.

The goddess appears as a tall, lustrous drow woman with ankle-length silver hair, cloaked in argent radiance. Rarely does she take a direct hand in the affairs of mortals, instead manifesting as silver light that surrounds an item (usually a sword) or an individual who holds her favor. To her faithful, she charges that they adhere to her dogma as follows:
>>
>>5417812
Aid the strong and weak alike, and be always kind, unless battling evil. Defend and aid all folk, promoting happiness and fellowship between them. Strangers are your friends, and their hearts are to be lifted with caring words, jests, and merriment. Repay rudeness with kindness, and violence with swift violence. The faithful must assist drow in distress, so long as they are not working evil on others, and offer them this message:

'A rightful place awaits you in the Realms Above, in the Land of Great Light. Come in peace, and live beneath the sun again, where trees and flowers grow.'

Well?
>Fine. I will make an effort to internalize all of this insipid drivel.
>Perhaps I could learn to accept all of this, if her followers can convince me.
>I have no strong feelings one way or the other in regards to the Dark Maiden.
>There is no doubt that this is not the path for me, though I will not begrudge those who walk it.

It's important to remember that the main goal is to just be a general follower, it's not like Jez is trying to become a paladin or a cleric or something. The most important thing to get out of this is the safety of Jez's soul, don't want to end up as one of the False, or outright get eaten by Lolth. Really if every single person adhered to dogma of their god of choice, the world would be in a very different state. Imagine every interaction being with a stick up the ass paladin.

If this influences anybody's decisions, unless you're a cleric of a paladin, people in the Realms are mostly polytheistic. So, it's okay (recommended, even) to ask for protections and blessings from as many gods as possible, even if they aren't your "main" deity.
>>
>>5417892
Do we have to believe in the mumbo jumbo for the blessings or favors to work?
>>
>>5417972
We shouldn't especially seeing as Eilistraee outright gave Jez her blessing during the fight with the Huntlord. In Eilistraee's case specifically she is more than likely to be patient with Jez seeing as she spent centuries in the Underdark, and that cultivates a rather specific identity. So long as Jez tries, (which she has been doing this entire quest, and has been doing a rather good job at it imo) she'll be ok. Hell Jez is likely to have her efforts noticed faster than most seeing as she's not only Eilistraee's specific type of soul she actively goes for, but she also generally embodies her various domains, and has outright received a blessing.
>>
>>5417972
A mortal's relationship with the gods is partly a practical matter. So, for example, Jez was able to ask for (temporary) power from Eilistraee in exchange for fighting someone who hurt her followers, and Malar later rewarded her for impressing him by challenging and culling his "weak" priest. Taking a "mercenary" approach and doing things for different gods to get the rewards is acceptable, provided they aren't rivals. Pledging allegiance to one specific god that you generally agree with is still recommended, however.

Obviously, not every little deed or prayer will earn divine favor. But Jez is an adventurer, and a mighty one at that, so she can be given appropriately difficult tasks.

To say that you are dubious of the premise would be the understatement of the century. Strangers are most definitely not your 'friends,' and you do not feel any strong compulsion to offer them your aid. This rings true for the Ilythiiri more than any, of which you have slain in droves. Indeed, you hands are awash with the blood of your kin, for the greatest threats to anyone born as Ilythiiri are their family, their allies, and their race. Those who do not realize this as younglings become victims of a fate most odious at the hands of their people, be it as sport, slaves, or sacrifices. Such is the truth of this world.

Or is it? The text you now cradle betwixt your hands makes grand promises of a rightful place in this world for wayward children just like you, wherein you coexist with others different from yourself. An idyllic existence, where you will spend your lovely days making merry with song and dance, and prancing around in the forests as Thiala Summerbreeze would. It would have to be seen to be believed, and what you have seen has not convinced you of its veracity.

Here, there are those who would persecute you for the crime of simply existing, as Dulnur and the Corellite would. Those like the Malarites and the Cyricists, who pledge their allegiance to dark powers, hungry for the blessings which their masters gladly confer. Those such as the Keeper and the Master of Guilds, whose ambitions supersede the wants of others. However different this 'Land of Great Light' is, the harsh lessons that made you strong continue to serve you just as well as ever. If you are to be persuaded to change this paradigm, then the Eilistraeans would do well to make a convincing argument when you meet them.

You've devoted some time to quiet introspection. What is next on the agenda?
>Enough delays. I decided to continue the search for my people, and my quest resumes now. I leave for the Moonwood.
>I will be leaving Everlund, but not by foot. Next I will see about securing some transportation to my next destination.

I will inform Willow, Amaranth and Ilanis about my plans, and ask Willow and Amaranth in private to keep an eye on Ilanis' safety, particularly for a particularly fat halfling who might have syphilis trying to infect her with his fat sausage fingers.
>Also, might as well ask Mielikki for her help finding the Eilistraeans, particularly if they're hiding in the woods.
>>
Are we really going to have Jez leave when Amaranth is preparing for her to be tested for magical aptitude? Getting from Everlund to the Moonwood would take probably 3 days if traveling on a caravan, after that who knows how long it would take to figure everything out and then come back?
>>
Actually I take it back, it's a 50 mile trip from Everlund to Silverlymoon but Jez could go by boat, making it possible to just get there in a day. (Provided a sailing ship was used, considering it's a river whatever boat would probably be a raft, barge, or keelboat, making it faster to just go by land.) Getting to the Moonwood from Silverymoon is an indeterminate amount of time, especially without the help of an experienced tracker or outright divine help. I suppose Jez would be getting a LOT of use out of that acorn...
>>
>>5419182
Potentially even faster as Silverymoon is downstream from Everlund. Last one I swear
>>
>>5419122
>>5419157
Supporting the bit about talking with everyone. Otherwise,
>I will be leaving Everlund, but not by foot. Next I will see about securing some transportation to my next destination.
Might as well figure out transportation times instead of just speculating off of old 3.5 maps.
>>
>>5419179
Well, maybe. It's not like he doesn't have anything else to do while Jez is out on adventures.

Content with your decision, you decide that your next destination is to be the All-Faiths Hall. Among the Ilythiiri, it is said that your people are 'Lolth's meat,' naught but warm flesh to slake the endless voracity of the Spider Queen. In the world below, it is common knowledge that can Lolth manifest in the Realms to torment her people at her pleasure, whether they be errant or obedient. You have no intention of becoming the latest victim of her mercurial cruelty - whatever can be done to divert her scrutiny away from you, it must be done.

Ascending a gentle incline, you step through the broad entrance of an austere building constructed of polished limestone that rests imposingly adjacent to the Bell Market. Passing under an arch engraved with characters from an alphabet which you are wholly unfamiliar with, you find yourself in a hexagonal chamber, large enough to accommodate hundreds of worshipers. Six shrines occupy the corners of the structure, each devoted to a different power.

You watch as humans and half-breeds come and go, burning incense and meditating on the precepts of their surfacer gods - some popular, some less so. Some even sing quiet songs extoling the virtues of the divine. It is a peculiar thing, to be in a holy place that does not double as the seat of government for a city. The relationship that these surface-dwellers have with their deities seems so much more... personal, than the transactional attitude typical of Lolthite activity.

The choice is yours. Whose shrine will you approach?
>Lathander, the Morninglord - God of the Renewal, Athleticism, Creativity, and Birth
>Sune, Lady Firehair - Goddess of Passion and Beauty
>Tymora, Our Smiling Lady - Goddess of Victory and Good Fortune
>Oghma, the Patron of Bards - God of Knowledge and Inspiration
>Selûne, the Moondmaiden - Goddess of the Moon, Stars, and Travelers
>Liira, the Joybringer - Goddess of Happiness, Liberty, and Dance
>>
>>5421003
>Lathander, the Morninglord - God of the Renewal, Athleticism, Creativity, and Birth

As much as Jez hates the sun, Lathander in particular is about athletics and self perfection, two things that resonate with Jez considering her pride in her own abilities. For those that don't remember, Jez had this whole bit where she really didn't like the idea of being a priestess of Lolth and wanted to gain things under her own power, much to her mothers chagrin. Renewal and birth are also good picks here as Jez is infertile, and she's trying to get away from Lolth, something close to renewal.

That being said just praying to Eilistraee on your own time is a better idea in my opinion, especially seeing as we already got her attention before and are her preferred convert type in particular. Sadly there's no shrine around that isn't all the way in the forest.
>>
>>5421003
>Selûne, the Moondmaiden - Goddess of the Moon, Stars, and Travelers
With all the talk of the moon, visiting different places, and seeking the followers of Eilistraee, Selûne seems like the best choice right now since we'll be traveling soon.Plus, according to the Forgotten Realms Wiki, she's friends with Eilistraee.

Uneasily, you step toward the shrine of Selûne, made up of wrought silver shaped into a pair of feminine eyes encircled by seven stars, suspended in the air by some odd magic. Of these six powers represented in this hall, you would presume that Selûne is one of the 'more' popular ones. A small crowd gathered around a modest altar surrounded by offerings of wine and milk - the latter of which has miraculously yet to turn rancid - appraises you with their stares, some frightened, others intrigued.

Those around you come from many walks of like. Women and men, both young and old, some well-to-do, others destitute, and everything in-between. Wary as you may be, the atmosphere seems largely informal. For all intents and purposes, you reason that the goddess would not smite you for committing faux pas in this context. Certainly, there are no priestesses patrolling the grounds looking for an opportunity to level some abuse toward you.

So?
>Request that she protect you from other gods.
>Offer to do Selûne's bidding, to secure her favor.
>Name Selûne as your patron deity.

>Sacrifice the werebear's head to Selûne.

Wringing your hands, you shunt the prying eyes of the crowd from your awareness. There are no priestesses here to punish you for sacrilege, a reality that is still difficult to grapple with. In your native Ilythiirra, you mutter a prayer under your breath. "Selûne, I..." you gulp. Offering prayer out of fear is not unusual to you, though a petition for protection is a genuine first. "... your protection, for myself and those who are not my enemies. To not be the meat of the goddess, and suffer in her roiling belly when we are all killed." You shift your weight. There is nothing else to be said about the matter. Rather, nothing that you can think of.

An invisible hand with the texture of soft light brushes against your cheek. Your friends are not the ones in need of protection. It is you who is vulnerable, inviting the wrath of the Weaver of Chaos in your refusal to return to the fold. But you are welcome under under the moon's light, should you desire to be so. Trust in her radiance, and stay the course.

"I seek the company of my people - those who would not slay me - the Ilythiiri who offer their prayers to Eilistraee. What has become of them?" You wonder vaguely. No. It has been over a hundred nights since the Moonmaiden's luster has last touched the devout of Lady Silverhair. They have sought shelter in the darkest depths of the Moonwood, away from the hateful eyes of the humans and orcs and giants. It cannot be said whether any yet remain.

The goddess offers you nothing else in the way of information. Communing with Selûne has been most unlike your encounter with the more terrible Malar. She is enigmatic, and placid in a way that your lexicon does not have the capacity to vocalize. Whatever the case, your prayers have been answered - ahead of you are new perils, familiar and strange alike, but in all your centuries a daunting challenge has never deterred you.

By blade and boot, will and wit, you will rise to the occasion.

Thank you for reading Forgotten Realms Adventures Volume IV. This is the beginning of a new "phase" or "arc" of the quest, so my time has been spent more on thinking about the future than getting updates out lately. I didn't foresee most of this when I started the first thread, but I think I have a solid vision for the next scenario. The next thread should be up in a day or two.

Now is the time for questions, discussion, and such.
>>
>>5424786

Thanks for running, QM! I love this quest. You're a very skillful writer, and great at rolling with our sometimes-weird decisions.

How old IS Jez, relative to a human? Like, is she the equivalent of a 30-year old, 40-year old... Older?
>>
>>5424871
From earlier threads:
>Jez is in her early-mid 200s. To put that in numbers that actually matter, if she were a human, she would be in her 40s.
>>
>>5424786
When's Jez getting a daughter?
>>
>>5424871
Glad to hear. Yes, as another anon said, Jez is old enough to be Ilanis' mother. She's old enough to be a grandmother, even.

>>5425240
Not any time soon, if she doesn't find the right person. Can't have some random schmuck diluting Jezyrene's superior genetics, after all. Or at least, that's how she would see it. Though oddly, the drow don't take issue with reproducing with non-drow, as they put little emphasis on paternal origin.
>>
>>5424958
But anon, looking at the Forgotten Realms wiki puts the Drow maximum age at 750 years, assuming they don’t die a typical Lolthite Drow’s death before they hit 400. That would mean at 200 years old, Jez would be closer to a human woman in her mid to late twenties.

Of course, this might mean Jez thinks she’s middle aged because she thinks that she’ll never get past 400, or never knew any Drow who got past 400 themselves…
>>
>>5425376
Can a god do a little immaculate conception on her?
>>
>>5425386
That's a little misleading. An elf of 350 years would be venerable, about the equivalent of a 70 year-old human. It's just that elves remain spry until their twilight years, and some rare specimens can even live past a millennium. A 750 year-old drow would be the equivalent 110 year-old human - which is exceptional, not average. More realistically, Jez is looking at living until her mid-500s, assuming she isn't killed before then.

That puts her at a little less than half her expected natural lifespan.
>>
>>5425393
Good question. I'd imagine that it's within the scope of most major gods' abilities. I do know that they can sire children with mortals.
>>
>>5425386
>>5425419
Thenimportant tging is that Jez is confirmed for Christmas Cake.
>>
I just want to laugh at Jez's hilarious attempts to court someone from the surface. Like a cat bringing you a dead rat and asking for praise.
>>
>>5425447
That's why begging a god is an interesting proposition
>>
>>5425425
Interesting!
>>
The adventure continues.
