>Operation Overlord, June 6th 1944. Better known as D-Day.
This will be an alternative History quest, Experimenting with the question if Hitler had seen through the feint in the north, and reinforced defenses on the Beaches of Normandy.
The setting will be held in the Omaha sector between the American attackers and the German defenders.

I will have you first pick a side, then a type of soldier to play as.
First things first.

Which side do you choose?

I will leave this vote up for a day since this is very important.

Aww man, I was really hoping we'd be a tanker.
For thus of us not in the know, what does Grenadier mean in this context, infantry attached to armored division or just a dude who lobs grenades or mortar user?
>>
>>5362097

The Grenadier has a muzzle mounted 30mm grenade launcher with the K98 to set it off, and 4 stick grenades. ie: k98 with a Schiessbecher to launch the grenades.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schiessbecher

I would have put it in, but anyway i tried to put it tank combat would be hard to do. But be assured, there WILL be tanks.

The reason i'm not voting for sniper is that Snipers work fairly isolated and frankly relatively passively in the sense that we will be holing up in some areas for x amount of time. I have to believe we need to be playing something more aggressive mobile that works in a group if this is going to interesting at ALL to read/play.

Darkness. You dream of the days back on your fathers dairy farm. You are milking the prize cow Lisa, when there is an earthquake, causing her to moo in distress.

Light. Thats the first thing you see through your window, as someone is shaking you awake. "Max, Max wake up. Max!"

You grunt. "30 more minutes". The shaking intensifies 'Hoffmann wake up!". "WHAT"??!! you finally relent.

Its Stephan Groß, your friend and assistant gunner. "Wake up you retard, its time for us to take the morning watch".

"Why do we have to be morning watch?", you groan.
"Because its what the Kommandant assigned to us. We wouldn't want to make him [r]angry[/r] now would we?", Stephan asks you.

"I guess you're right" you grumble. "I'm always right." Stephan boasts.

You then proceed to put on your fatigues, tie your boots, and check your gear less the Kommandant makes an issue of it. You walk out of the barracks, but Stephan shouts, " Max! you almost forgot your weapons!". You sigh internally, knowing such as breech in protocol would restrict your rations for the week.
He hands you your,

>MG 42
and your
>Mauser C96
>Walther P38
>Kongsberg Colt
lastly
>Hitler Youth knife
>Standard K98k Bayonet
>16 inch Bowie knife

You thank him and make sure your weapons would at least past a visionary inspection and start walking to the briefing yard.

"GOOD MORNING SOLDATS!" the Kommandant yells. You know this is to help you awaken more, so you don't take offense to it. "Gruppe 11-MG! Report to Bunker 3-D for morning watch!"

"YES KOMMANDANT!" you and your fellow squadmates yell. You then begin the march to the coastal defenses, when the Kommandant pulls the Squad leader aside, and seem to have a serious discussion. When they are finished, the Kommandant then waves for you to come over.
"Good job keeping morale high Soldat. Take these extra ammo cans just in-case."

>received 3 250 round ammo boxes for your machine gun

"Good luck Soldat." and with that the Kommandant dismisses you.
The Squad Leader then comes over and tells you "the Kommandant says a landing is due any day now, we are to be at high combat readiness." He then pats your back and goes to tell the rest of your Gruppe.
Stephan manages to overhears this.
"We should head to the bunker, let the rifle squads handle the perimeter defenses."

You get up once the shaking has stopped, you look up and spot the Bunker has beem badly damaged. You then look to see if everyone is alright. Stephan lays there unmoving. You shaking him like he shook you this morning.

Stephan has survived

"Stephan wake up!" you yell. He opens his eyes and coughs a bit. "Im fine retard, watch the beach!"

You then look over the trench line and see 4 troop carriers hit the shore and lower the ramps, disgorging troops that take cover behind the tank traps.

>combat initiated.

You have 5 options

>Aimed burst - Plus 10 to actually hit, enemy has an oppurtunity to fire back.
Uses 100 rounds

>Suppression - Minus 10 to hit, enemy wont be able to get a shot on you or move forward.
Uses 200 rounds

>Change barrels - Switches out the barrel for it to cool down and replaces it with a new one.
The barrel works like this every time you fire. Cold,Warm,Hot, Very Hot, and Melting. It is preferable to change out a barrel before it gets to Melting. but it gives the enemy a chance to move up on you.

>Hold fire - Cools the barrel down without switching, not good if you need to put more rounds down range fast, use if there is a lull in the enemy advance.

>Reload - Your assistant is currently linking the ammo/ use only if Assistant is badly injured or dead
Your currently have 2250 rounds of ammunition.

"Gerwulf!" the rifleman looks over, " find out if the artillery batteries are working or not! We need them to hit the beach!"

"Max! We need to clear them out before the next wave comes or hold them in place until some sort of artillery or the tank divisions get here!" Stephan yells

Your fellow riflemen eliminate a group of ten that decided to push at the end of your suppressing fire.

You fire again, this time aiming down the sight to nick those who think they are safe behind the tank traps. You pull the trigger in two second bursts to maximize your accuracy.

You fire at the masses that are huddled around the tank traps, and while you can safely say you managed to get over 20 of them, Stephan says he counts 38 dead when he looks up from his binoculars.

You feel pretty proud of that number. You move to tell ask Stephan if he has seen Gerwulf yet, but spot a glint next to a distant Tank trap....

"Stephan! Need a barrel change!" He disengages the barrel lock on the MG and takes the glowing tube out with a pair of tongs. "Whewy! Thats hot! Remember to change the barrel out before it gets to melting, unless we are in dire circumstances."
He then inserts a new barrel in and turns the barrel lock on. You turn back and see that the 5 transports have arrived and are lowering the ramps.

>2 Wave has arrived

"Hoffmann!" you look over and see your squad leader calling to you. "The Panzer divisions are on the way! Reinforcments are arriving in around an hour, but it might take longer due to enemy paratroopers!"
You nod. An hour or so to go. May Gott help us.

The enemy troops have begun to rush your position and are now halfway to your trench

The Königstiger fires its main gun into the horde of enemys rushing forwards, and takes a huge chunk of them out. It also caused a secondary explosion which set multiple people near it on fire.

You spring into action and fire short, accurate bursts into the remaining front runners making them faceplant into the sand.

The two Riflemen have returned, but two cracks sound out and one falls to the ground while the other one makes it back to the trench with the clips for the riflemen.

"Stephan! Call for artillery!" Stephan nods and waves for the Squad leader. "Squad Lead! We need artillery!" Squad lead nods, and shouts "Artillery incoming!"

You Begin pouring led down range, cutting them down, as a scythe would wheat. Stephan also says that the last two transports landed, and he sees no more Transports incoming.

You have cut so many down, that the advance has slowed down to a crawl, and they are only Halfway to your trench. You then hear two Stuka Sirens and their bombs blow big holes in the enemies advance.

Squad leader shouts to you, "Hoffman, we have reports of an large object coming to shore. Be Sufficiently prepared "

You feel a bullet graze your arm, cutting a shallow valley there. You think its a good idea to get that checked once the battle is over.

Stephan wraps your arm with a bandage, " It will do for now" he then finishes the barrel change.

You hear the thundering of the Königstiger and see a whole score of men vaporized by the explosion. You are glad that the shell from earlier didnt hit you. Then an american helmet lands by you. Probrobly from the explosion.
"hey, it brought us cigarettes!" Stephan plucks a cigarette tin off of the helmet. "you want one?"

>yes

Suddenly you hear a swoosh sound and see the Königstiger hit by a Bazooka shot. You hope it didnt kill the crew.

You take Stephan up on his offer and take the cigarette, and ask for a light. Even though they are bad for you, who will tell once you are dead?

You spray more lead down range, and the riflemen also send as many rounds as their K98s can too. You had fired in the direction where the Bazooka team was, but you are unsure if you got them.

One thing is for sure, they are almost to your position. Stephan has even started firing his pistol, killing a few at such long distance.

You see yet another glint in the distance. You fucking hate snipers.

We are getting close to the lowest possible estimate of historical US casualties on Omaha. We just need to hold out a bit longer for that to happen.

Of course, the other beaches are probably going to be overrun regardless, but hey, makes the rest of the armies job a bit easier if we throw this force into the sea and get an iron cross for our efforts.

Also I fully expect us to die from the shoulder wound if we can't throw them all into the sea quick. Despite movies claiming otherwise, a vital main artery goes through there...

You decide that this is the one opportunity to relocate to the bunker to prepare for whatever is inside that Large Ship. Even now you can see the doors slowly opening.

But you leave the remaining infantry a parting gift by calling in some artillery.

You see the the dirt kicking up and the bodies flying as you and Stephan pack up your MG and head up the hill to get inside the bunker while the rest of the squad stays behind to mop up the rest of them. And a good job doing that they are.

"Stop messing around Max! Hurry up!" Shouts Stephan already on top of the hill.
You manage to shimmy the rest of the way up the hill and into the bunker. You find a hole in the ceiling, and 4 dead bodies. Died from the blast you think
"Good news Max!" you glare at him. "I Found 2 cases of ammo for the MG!" Good. You were getting low.

While you set up the MG to a mount on the bunker, Stephan changes the barrel out.

Artillery rains down upon the enemy tanks and Infantry as they move up the beach. Unfortunately it seems like the they have no effect against the Jumbos, but the infantry is a different story.

The Königstiger opens up and penetrates the turret of one of the Jumbos. It slowly comes to a stop as smoke pours out of its hatches that were blasted open.

You Survived.

You survived this slaughter house, but the same cant be said for your Gruppe mates whose bodies are in the trench below. More importantly, you are not the sole survivor, you have Stephan who survived along with you. Bastard. Your arm aches. You think you will give him some of Lisa's prized milk after this war is over.

You hear multiple steps coming and Stephan and a Medic comes and he gets to work on dressing and reapplying the wounds you had received during the assault.
You close your eyes while the man works.

Then everything just, drifts away

These are the plans of DDay simplified extremely.

Note, that Erwin Rommel was in charge of the Defenses, and after the order came to double down, he made sets of fall back positions all the way to Caen.

He knew that they would come to take it with whatever they had, so he built up the city. He also asked for another division, one of which was pulled from the eastern front after being badly damaged, and was meant to replenish and resupply its troops. They were stations there along with the 352nd and the one Panzer division.

3 weeks before dday, Hitler was made aware of the invasion and Operation Bodyguard (the fake planes and stuff). He ordered Rommel to shift them down in preparation for the attack.

The allied leaders received notice from ariel reconnasanse, and French resistance groups that they were shifting south, but only 5 days from D-Day. They had mutually agreed that scrapping the plan was to costly, and with Stalin banging at their door for help, (the invasion which was supposed to happen way way before then), they Approved it anyways and carried out their plan.

The Allied bombings from planes, did a little more damage deviating from IRL, and the Naval bombardment was also on par with the real world. Now, The Paratroops, Rommel was expecting some trully massive aerial drop, so he prepared accordingly. He set up AA and Flak positions to blow the gliders, and set up elite hunter-killer squads to mop up the Paratroopers that got through. Some may have noticed the 1 I rolled which resulted in the Tiger 2 arriving for our defense. That was the paratrooper roll. Needless to say they got royally fucked, and wiped out to a man. 101st? Completely wiped out.

Now on Juno, Gold, and Sword, Rommel knew that the beach defenses wouldnt hold, so the Brits took the beach, and even started landing LSTs. But Rommel forced them into massive trench warfare, to even gain the slightest bit of ground after they took the beach. In doing so Rommel lured in many more troops and killed them off, truly decimating the British Army.

Now the Air battle. That was a sight to behold. After the initial landings, Stuka and Bf109 squadrons, transferred from Berlin itself, took to the skies and fought tooth and nail for air superiority. They eventually whittled eachother down, and they both went home on a draw. (something that would never have happened if Hitler hadnt been made aware of the invasion by spys)

Fun quest OP.
>>
>>5369939
so do the axis still lose the war? I imagine the war takes takes longer and forces the U.S to drop a nuke on them.
>>
>>5370009
Yes

Because of the failure of the invasion, Germany bought itself the needed time to respond to the Soviet Mass push. The war would have lasted another 5 years as a back and forth between the German and Soviet forces. The Allies would launch another failed invasion from Italy, but would be pushed out after a slog throughout the mountains.

The US would never think to drop the bomb on Europe, and they would try to scare Germany into surrender with the Bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Eventually, the Germans would push all the way back to Moscow and eventually take it.

Ask away questions. I will give you theoretical answers.

Thanks for playing my Quest!
>>
>>5370009

Roughly how many dead on all sides?

>>5370168
During Dday? or at the end of the war?
>>
>>5370047
why wouldn't they drop a nuke on Germany. and with the u.s.a's victory in the pacific they could better focus efforts back on Germany.

even with a failed D day I can't see an axis victory. What I can imagine is a more powerful Germany that doesn't get split between N.A.T.O and the U.S.S.R. and with Russia getting fucked a collapse of the communist party and thus no cold war. I can imagine a larger Germany that has more negotiation power at the peace table. (even if Hitler or the nazi's are overthrown or replaced).

alternatively it might also lead to a even more heavily Russian Europe. and have been shit for everone.

That's like saying if the Finnish one 1 more battle during the winter war they could have eventually snowballed into destroying the USSR so the entire Eastern block is now Finnish.

No the truth is some things are inevitable. The Finns just can't beat the ussr just like the axis can't win ww2 around d-day it's to late at that point. To have a axis victory you have to go further back that d-day

Would germany attempt operation sea lion and try to take britain?
>>
>>5371299
Yes. Once they delt with the soviets, They would attempt to, but the absolute slogfest of fighting for every inch of dirt, would prompt Germany to just bomb Britain to ashes. Like they did Dresden.
If Germany didnt solve the Nuclear question before invading.
>>
>>5371624
yeah it's kinda funny that Germany started the nuclear arms race (by accident) then did basically nothing because a lack of resources and what little it did get every program had to fight for in a form of RND Darwinism. it doesn't help that the Nazi party basically declared that whole branch of science as "Jewish". it led to anything nuclear being stonewalled and neglected. it would be years before they could match the Americans.
