/qst/ - Quests

“A Knight is Sworn to Valour. His Heart Knows Only Virtue. His Blade Defends the Helpless. His Might Upholds the Weak. His Word Speaks Only Truth. His Wrath Undoes the Wicked.”

Every child in Cantôn knows of the Knight’s Code. From peasant-born waifs playing with sticks in the mud to keen-eyed noble sons practicing with cold steel in the training yard, all have at the very least dreamed of one day becoming a knight themselves. To ride out on errantry into the Five Duchies Kingdom and beyond for God and Glory, bringing the Law of Adam to the wicked and the Blade of Cain to the beast.

The Knights of Cantôn are sworn to follow the Code, to obey the King, to refuse no call for aid honestly asked for, to seek out and destroy the Foe wherever it may lurk and rid the world of evil.

Were it so easy…

Many years from now, not far from home…

“Been a while since we’ve seen yon round these ‘ere parts.” The innkeep remarks wryly upon the entrance of the newcomer, setting down a mug and beginning to labour at another with his piece of cloth.

“Ah, but did you ever doubt my return?” The bard’s wide grin seems to encompass his entire face as strolled leisurely over the threshold. He leans against the bar as if he had been away days, not months. Or years.

“And miss out on the chance of a free meal?” The innkeep’s snorts derisively, but there is no venom in it. Instead, the burly man gestures towards a seat by the cackling fire. The bard’s unofficial spot, reserved just for him.

“And where is your goodwife?” The wandering troubadour offers a thankful nod at the mug of ale pressed into his hands. “I’ve cert missed her skill with the ladle and pot.”

“She’s up yonder.” The innkeep gestures up the stairs as he returns to his station. “Resting with the babe.”

“The babe?!” The bard blinks, for once taken aback. “Well I never. Congratulations, my good man! Boy or girl?”

“We’rnt me that did most o’ the work, but I thank ye all the same.” Even beneath the man’s impressive facial hair, the smile is impossible to conceal. “A Boy, and a big one at that. 10 weeks and growing. Judging from his lungs tho, you’d think him part wyvern or somesuch.”

“Hasn’t scared away all your customers, has he?” The bard smirks, glancing around at the empty tavern.

“Oh no, take more than that to put folk off a warm fire and stiff drink. ’Sides it’s early in the day yet, but I’d not mind a story or two to pass the time meanwhiles.” The innkeep pauses in his wiping, sparing an apologetic look for the newcomer. “Ifn’ ye don’t mind stoopin’ to an audience of one.”

“Oh I reckon I can manage to a fine bit of stooping, my old friend. Hmmm…” The storyteller pats his instrument, mind already stretching to any of the myriad branches of his stories too rarely explored. “In fact, I think I have just the right tale in mind. An opener, if you will…”

I'd say just read the room and try to vote in character. We're a fairly pious and chivalrous knight who cares deeply for his people, hates copper clippers and believes the Almighty speaks to him via an angel. He's done some wild, wild, reckless shit in the name of honour and doing the right thing. Right now we're sailing across the sea into the land of filthy slavers and strange cultures to complete the final step on our pilgrimage and maybe join the Dragon Guard, an elite and well renowned group of mercenary bodyguards for the leader of Cathagi known as the "Dragon" (probably an actual dragon).

Also we've accidentally killed or maimed a number of people in duels, woops. I'll leave the rest for you to read about. You don't have to read the archives but I strongly suggest it, it's a great read. If you want to speed read just search Forgottens name and read the updates, not the discussion (although in between the screaming there is some really good discussion)

So the POV's are interesting seems like things might be kicking off in new places

>Damien
Heading home with our sister roselyn on a boat, seemed like we got the Reginate heat off him in Pascae But not the Kingsmen I realiised on the break

>Robert
Reginate shit is always going to mean big dick shit that should scare us, having used an attainment for the first time in a while on house Hewitt that might be a spark to ignite or at least begin a avalanche.

>Rabe
last we heard he was heading back to Montbrun with his sister and was a little worried about the snakemen who might be acting up, luckily the pass might hold them.

>Sir Marc
our loyal Boy is taking the now houseless lady Hewitt to serve our family I predict Grief and mistakes on the road

>Tracker Jean
last we saw her she was stuck on the other side of the Montbrun passes being hounded by Snakemen though luckily her refugee caravan and our wealth if I recall correctly were saved by the timely intervention of the Godric St. John and the order of the broken blade though the victory cost him and his order dearly

>Sir Glasdale
Our good friend who took up with a peasant girl and is looking after Tam the orphan who we saved on our first adventure, who knows what this POV could lead too...

I do believe the northmost Island is the orginal point from where they originated during the night of the three sister and is the stronghold of whatever horror created them.

The most sterling example of a ''Noble'' house who in truth are little more than copperclippers, we started a Beef with Marco Hewett in Fallavon after an exchange of insults and a duel we won.

Turns out he's house was or at least he was involved in the Cathaggi slave trade selling peasants off to the slavers for coin, we told the Queens herald sir Gilbern and now the house wholesale is delenda est or desitute, the only survivor we know of are on Sir Gilberns word are the children of the house and Lady Maria Hewett who we choose to ask him to spare.

I would very much like to hear more of our brother, but this could be our last chance for a while to hear of the some of the highest level of intrigue in Canton.
>>5340844
Ive rationalized it by continuing the comparison between Emile and a freight train. We cause mayhem as we pass thru the political scene and leave before people in power and influence know what happened. The best or luckiest of them, such as the Prince, easily outmaneuver our bulk and laugh at us as we plow by them. Now we pass the horizon, out of sight and sound. Canton gets complacent. Oh, all of those rumors about a bear night with connections between the most powerful, who crippled the ducal prince and helped catch a bunch of elite kiddie diddlers are just that rumors. Then two years later we come careening back to the kingdom, ruining years of planning, with only those who have met us frequently having any preparation for us and explanation for others.
Don't view it as us being locked away. Instead view it as Canton growing riper for our interference.

We said we'd let him know of any threats to Canton IF we heard of them nothing binding us to joining the Dragonguard, as for the prestiege Its a court a continent removed as well as socially and theologically removed from Cantons politicial sphere but I will have to pay that any detractions or appreciations of the position are a matter of context and speculation at this point.

>as for the prestiege Its a court a continent removed as well as socially and theologically removed from Cantons politicial sphere

You're not wrong but evidently it's still looked upon as a highly sought after position it seems

>>3248489
"That said, the Dragon Guard is a position of no small prestige. It’s exactly the sort of adventure that your eyes lit up at when tales of the Errantry of other great knights were told around the hearthfire"

I imagine there would be a few time skips as well. Seems like the kind of job where it's long stretches of boredom punctuated by moments of sheer terror. That and politics.
>>
>>5340590
p.s. it doesn't look like you announced the thread on your twitter

>Young Lord Damien Andrei, elder brother and heir to House Andrei only just!

Fenegan, 13th Day of Bacrimun, 883 A.C.E, Midday – Offshore of the Romani coast

Young Lord Damien Andrei watched the coastline drift by, close enough to shore to make out the rise and fall of the farmer’s backs as they laboured in rows collecting the harvest. Closer still was the glint of a spear in a watchtower one the shoreline, the impressive sea-washed marble at odds with the more recent wooden ramparts jutting out of it.
But there was no alarm coming, and the guard beneath the speartip slouched rather than stood at attention. The Litany of Solace flew her House Vidra colours proudly here, lest the ship be mistaken for a Cathagi raider. Damien blinked. They were not far from Vidra Isle now, and from there only a short stretch to Castle Andrei. Home.

“Pondering another letter to your sweet mountain lass?” That mocking tone and haughty smirk could belong to his elder sister, Young Lady Roselyn Andrei.

“I think I’ve penned enough during this voyage, and no way to send them. I hardly like the idea of ma belle Brunhilde receiving them all at once.” Damien barked a laugh at the thought, though honestly he doubted Young Lady Brunhilde Rabe would mind receiving a dozen letters at once. “Besides, I thought you liked her?”

“Hmm, yes I do admit I enjoyed the company of the little chatterbox. But, sweet as she is, it’s her father Lord Rabe’s iron markets that really seal the deal. Good steel is always at a premium in this Duchy, especially come winter.” Roselyn’s calculating expression looks Damien up and down, less as one sibling might regard another and more as how horse merchant might look at one of his wares on market day. “And it’s high time that we got you married.”

“Good to know I’ve got you watching out for me and the affairs of my heart, sis.” Damien scoffs, but there’s no venom in it. Truth be told, the heir of House Andrei had long ago made his peace with the fact his family would likely arrange his marriage with an alliance as the foremost consideration, and that love might not be a factor. He had not dared hope for as much. “In truth, I don’t mind. I… I think I would be happy. With her.”

“Good.” Roselyn spares her brother a sidelong glance, her tone softening as a she places a hand on his shoulder. “I’m glad.”

There is a long pause between the two eldest Andrei siblings, both watching the Romani shoreline roll by.

“Now.” Finally, Roselyn breaks the silence. “All we need next is to get your brother locked down with a wife.”

“Oh I don’t know…” The smile on Damien’s face widens. “I think Emile is doing well enough on his own on that front…”

“Damien, you know why. I’m not going to walk you through all the details of Emile’s political career but his debut was crippling the Duke Fallavon’s son and his latest achievement ended in leaving Port Bounty a political charnel house.” Roselyn shakes her head, pitying some Pascae schemer somewhere. “ And now he’s somehow managed to earn the Crown Prince’s ire. And we don’t even know exactly why.”

“He must be involved.” Damien pauses, glancing sideways to make sure they were alone. The House Vidra sailors had given little cause for distrust, but this kind of talk… it was the kind of talk that got people killed. “The Prince. Involved in exactly -what- I don’t know. But it’s the only explanation I can think of for making Emile his enemy.”

“I doubt the Prince thinks of Emile as an enemy. For one thing, our bother is still alive. An annoyance is more likely. Funny that our lack of import serves us well for once, the only saving grace is that our House is so far removed from these events in Fallavon and Pascae. The thought of Emile loose in the Duchess Romaine’s Court…” The very thought causes the eldest Andrei sister to shiver. “Until things calm down… and until Mother calms down… Honestly, him staying abroad might be the best thing for us all right now.”

“You forget yourself, sister.” Damien had been letting Roselyn rattle on for a while, but when he spoke something had changed. A subtle thing, a hardening of the voice and serious look that reminded Roselyn just how much Damien was like Father. “He has served us well, above and beyond the call of duty. House Andrei could not hope for a worthier champion… or a finer son. Odds are I’d be long dead and rotting in the woods if not for him.”

[2/3]
>>
[3/3]

“You can’t seriously be considering taking on a member of the Royal Family if…” Roselyn’s wily smirk slips as she catches her brother’s stubborn expression. “Reginae wept, you are serious.”

“Not in open warfare, obviously-”

“Oh wonderful!” Roselyn exclaims, palm to forehead.

“-I’m just saying that if Em is on the wrong side of… of whoever these Faction people are, we should do what we can to help.” Damien crosses his arms stubbornly, remembering it’s what Father would do whenever he was making a rare decision that Mother didn’t agree with. “We are family. And Right Makes Might.”

“If the Prince is as involved as we suspect then all the Right in the world isn’t going to…” Roselyn takes a deep breath, reminding herself that Mother is always calm even when she’s furious. “Look Damien, I think our family’s best approach is to steer well clear and focus on building up our power base. The surest way to not lose a game you don’t understand is to not play. Still, there’s also merit in being aware of the what game is actually being played, and what the stakes are. Just promise me you’ll talk this over with Mother and Father before doing anything rash.”

Damien nods, returning his gaze to the Romani coast and the farmer’s labouring there. “…I promise.”

Jumping right in seems dumb, but so does ignoring it outright. Damien was too close to pretend nothing is going on the the Prince is no friend. Reach out and make cautious contact with Gilbern. It's the best way forward I reckon

No uncles, but you have several aunts that are married into various lesser Romaine houses. They would likely form part of Mother's network of contacts.

House Vidra is currently the most important ally, being Mother's family. It was mentioned previously, but before the Night of Three Sisters they were actual a vassal of House Andrei. One of your aunts is married to a relative in the other ex-vassal as well, but not directly on the seat of power. With your sister Anastajia marrying into House Norveski they would also be on good terms with you.

Individuals poking and proding around is one thing, but a house effort to do the same will lead to like kind being thrown our way, if not more.
The truth is we are better off keeping our heads down. The better we consolidate an anti faction power stronghold, the better off we are when we start poking around and asking questions. But that said, the fact we don't know what it truly means to be anti faction is a problem in and of itself.
So the only thing to he done is to at least get the basic information, learn about what we're dealing with, and act accordingly from there.

Mate, the knights of the Ordo Reginae are the Queens hands and blades. As Forgotten said in the early threads, the Thorn path is travelled both by the selfish and the ideologue. Gilbern, for instance, is a torturer, murderer and liar at the very least. All for the sake of his beloved Queen of course, but he is happy to sacrifice as many innocents as is needed to bring about the downfall of her enemies.
Every knight in that crypt was among the Queens most trusted warriors. Each one was considered so loyal to her that they could be trusted with the truth about the Sons of Sin. They were ironically among the worst picks for fighting a Son since all of them were probably about 50/50 Cain and Thorn.

This is probably the best course of action. We should probably ask Ros to handle correspondence with the Reginate/Gilbern as I don't think Damien wants to involve Mother too deeply in our escapades and isn't in great standing with them. He also seems like a presentable lad and she needs a husband.

I'd like to add in reaching out to the various Houses we've befriended (Norveski, Rabe, not a House but Willem Glasdale, etc.) for aid, not in politics, but in everything other than politics. Similar to the already mentioned Rabe steel trade, any trade agreements, mutual martial aid, or even just information exchanges could help relieve pressure off House Andrei in these now uncertain times.

Touching base with them and convincing Mother to reach out to her own contacts and turn her attention to the nature of the game being played may be prudent. Hopefully they will be on even better terms after Emile bested and killed (?) Sir Broulert during the duel at Pascae. Ironic, given that Broulert died from drowning, and House Vidra is a sea-faring house.

Fenegan, 13th Day of Bacrimun, 883 A.C.E, Midday – Offshore of the Langlish coast

Two months. It has been two months to the day since you set sail from Port Bounty to complete the last leg of your pilgrimage. It feels like years…

You snap out of your musings and dodge to the side, avoiding the thrust of Mikail’s dulled blade. You grunt, leaning into the attack with a series of blows. He manages to fend you off, barely. Several sailors at ease on the deck applaud but most go about their own business, these little daily sparring sessions were entertaining at first, but after months at sea these martial displays have lost much of their novelty to the grizzled Langlish crew. Turning your attention back to your squire, you notice that his mop of black hair has come free of the his flattop helm. The sweat causes it to remain plastered across the left side of his face but, to the lad’s credit, he doesn’t let that distract him.

You’ve long stopped viewing the lowborn peasant boy from Andryski as unwanted baggage, instead settling more comfortably into your roles as master and apprentice. While you had long considered the boy to be a hard worker, if a little dull, now you can honestly say you see the young lad’s potential. He’s no Roiguard material, not by any stretch, but at some point in his training that lofty station has become less a wishful pipedream and more a goal to work towards.

Father Towbray has been helping the boy with his letters, but progress has been slow and there’s not a lot of new reading material to be had on a ship at sea. Even less opportunity to practice his courtly manners, although to be fair his hiccups at previous societal events fell short of being described as outright social disasters.

All that leaves is cleaning armour and sparring, and you have made it your personal mission to ensure that he’s been doing a lot of both every day.

[1/2]
>>
[2/2]

You follow through as Mikail ducks under your swing and turn to finish him off. Suddenly you halt, pausing in the middle of your backstroke. You blink at the minor sting of pain in your left leg. You fell for a feint, and a poorly disguised one at that, but in your distracted state you missed the tell-tale signs and instead committed to your lunge and gave him his opening.

It’s the first clean hit your squire has done on purpose with the two of you sparring in earnest and the boy looks like he’s just about ready to explode with pride. But it pleases you to see that he’s disciplined enough not to loosen his stance in the elation of the unexpected score. Mikail is still far from the skill required of an anointed knight, but he's coming along and you’d reckon he’d give some of Father’s greener men-at-arms a run for their wages.

“Hmm, I actually felt that.” Your hand brushes the back of your knee, where even the master-work plate must make allowances in protection for freedom of movement. “Well struck, squire. Let’s finish up for today on that note.”

“Tired already, milord?” Mikail pants, but his grin falters and cheeks go even redder as you glance back of your shoulder.

I was going to suggest we give him our old breastplate and we can pass the chain mail on to someone maybe Orin? anyway he should learn as a knight that he'll be fighting in heavy armour in a fight and he'll need to be trained for that.

As for the Idealist choice respect is due to us mentoring him.

This was discussed in previous threads, while he doesn't have the build for the breastplate, helm and greaves fitted to your size to be much more than a hinderance right now he will eventually grow into it.

Right guess we'll have to get him his own Breastplate or harness at some point then.

He should be proud of scoring a hit, distracted or no, but the outburst at the end demands his exuberance be cooled. You must be in control of yourself, not just when fighting, but also afterwords. If he does the same while fighting someone else, they may be offended enough to seek retribution.

STALWART trait tested

Mikail of Andryski has followed you without hesitation from the depths of monster’s lairs in Grenmire to the untamed reaches of the Fallavon forests. He has showed courage, if not particular talent, in each battle by your side. You have tested his mettle and not found him wanting. But overconfidence is a slow and insidious killer. You will not have your squire’s death on your hands as Sir Marcel Rousseau believes to have his nephews on his.

“All fire and vinegar, I see.” You remark dryly, keeping the humour out of your voice. Clicking a finger to your manservant Orin, you bid him to attend you. “Bring out my old breastplate. We will see how energetic my squire is after fighting in that.”

Mikail of Andryski paints a comical figure once he adorns the breastplate and accoutrements. They were designed with you, a full-grown man and a tall one at that, rather than a pubescent boy in mind. The armour hangs off him like an ill-fitting scarecrow and he moves uncomfortably under the weight. By comparison, you move like lightning.

“A touch to me, I should think.” Mikail blinks at your voice, not quite sure how your dulled blade ended up under his armpit so quickly.

“Er… right you are, milor-“

“Again!” You leave determined to get a decent workout and demonstrate to your squire how far he has to go yet.

*CLATTER*

“My touch.” You speak over the rattle of your squire picking himself up from the deck. “Again.”

Again and again the sparring, if it can be called that, continues. Always with the same result. Spectating sailors make the occasional noise in sympathy to the embattled squire, cementing yourself in some of their eyes as a pitiless teacher if there ever was one.

*TING*

“My touch.” Even a bystanding pilgrim, well used to your punishing martial exchanges, winces at the ringing sound of one of your blows to the helm that sends your young squire reeling. “Again."

*CLANG*

“My touch…” On and on it goes, until finally you take pity on your charge and offer him a way out. Surely the boy has learnt his lesson. “Alright. Had enough for today, squire?”

Mikail of Andryski pants heavily in response. His shoulders are sagged, his shield-arm hangs loosely by his side and his blade is barely hanging centimetres off the ground. His stance is utter dogshit, as your old Master-at-Arms would say. But you can’t read the expression on his face behind that old helm of yours.

“If… if it please… milord…” The boy gulps for air in between each handful of words. “We… could call it…. a draw.”

>Your squire gains the RESILIENT trait.
> Able to withstand a surprising level of physical punishment, your squire will not easily be put down and, if put down, will not easily stay down for long.

>Your squire gains the HAUGHTY conversation trait.
>Like teacher like pupil. His deep, stubborn pride in his position as squire to the greatest knight in the world is reflected in both his service to you and his interaction with others.

The kid has heart, I’ll grant him that. You think to yourself as you signal for the next round to begin. Almighty willing… we will make a knight of you yet, boy.

You close the distance mercilessly, sweat dripping down your back. At the last gasp, all that your squire can offer is an exhausted swing, so slow that you can quite literally walk under it and gently shove your opponent with your shield. Barely a shove, a nudge really, and your squire teeters backwards on exhausted legs and lands flat on his back.

“Orin, help him up and get him out of armour. Water first, then see Sister Ignatius about some salves for the bruises.” You can hazard a guess that there will be a fair few. “…I’ll give you tomorrow and Sandag to recover. We resume on Monegan.”

You look up at the afternoon sun, not a little bit short of breath yourself, and find your stomach growling. The extended sparring lesson has ploughed straight through lunch, though thankfully Orin has set aside a serving for you and Mikail on the deck. It’s cold now, but you’re hungry enough for that not to discourage you and look around ship for your usual mealtime companion.

My thoughts as well. Our squire is the best, but we should work on his courts skills as well. Poor etiquette coupled with haughtiness probably doesn't mix well together. I'm very curious to see what his next traits will be.

A man can dream of a time when, may the angel forgive me for saying this, Langlish contacts can come in handy for an assault on the Isle of the dammed.
On that note, have all the attempted reclamations of our duchy been targeted at the old capitol or has anybody actually tried to root out the rot at it's source? Because if we are working on droid army rules destroying the island seems like the easier option.

“Ah, L’Orso Tempesta. Must you be so hard on that poor boy?” Captain Alfonso Verdicci frowns admonishingly, but the exaggerated pout of his lips betrays the joke in his tone. “I’ve rarely seen masters treat their servants so ill.”

“He’s a squire, not a manservant.” You unclasp your gauntlets, setting the cold bowl of broth to one side. “An apprentice, of sorts.”

“Aha.” Captain Verdicci nods knowingly. “This was a prova then, a test of sorts? Did he pass?”

“You know…” You look back over to your squire on the foredeck, pausing from gulping down water to wince as Sister Ignatius lifts his bare arm to inspect an especially impressive welt. “I could be inclined to say he did.”

The two of you discuss at length the voyage, a topic that’s been covered more than once in between you regaling him with tales of battle on the continent and him recounting his close calls with weather and pirates alike. The whole voyage was supposed to take two months, including the round trip stopping at Langland, now you’ll be lucky to disembark in Cathagi before three. Still winds on the stretch between set you back by a few weeks, and now a further week the Coy Siren has remained anchored at the port of Capara. Captain Verdicci swore they had promised a berth, yet here you still remain.

And now you are fast approaching autumn. A fair time for farmers at harvest, less so for sailors at sea. Nothing compared how rough it can get on seas in winter, according to the Coy Siren’s captain Alfonso Verdicci. But he too seems does seem , but you think you can tell that he too is frustrated by the slow progress and this latest delay. Or at least he did until today, he informs you that Capara has at last secured them a spot to dock and entry into the harbour to resupply.

“Praise the Almighty, it's about time.” You glance at the Langlish Captain. “No reflection on you, of course. But what was the cause for making us wait? A plague? A coup? Some natural disaster? We’ve heard nothing as to why.”

“Nothing so dramatic.” Verdicci says with a grin. “The College of Admirals has been called, the port you see today is rarely half as full. Only today has a berth been made available. Though I suppose you could come some of the Admirals natural born disasters…”

“College, you say?” You remark, then realise how rude you sound. “Forgive my surprise, it’s just you didn’t strike me as a scholar.”

“A scholar of the sea, maybe. If your Cantish fancies go in for some romantic rubbish like that. But no, me a scholar? Far from it.” Captain Verdicci snorts. “Any Captain of Langlish allegiance can attend, whether they are a professor or as literate as an ordinary fisherman. The plaza is where they voice their greivances or ideas in a public forum. It is an old tradition, no real power in it so to speak. Still… things that move the mob in the plaza often make their way to the forefront of La Famiglie minds in setting policy. And keep an eye on the most popular potential rivals.”

“And this… ‘debate’, it’s open to the public?” Bemusement creeps into your voice. Langlish politics, in the form of public argument. What an odd notion. “Anyone? Even foreigners?”

“Of course, there is no barring of entry for spectators. And not every Langlish Captain is born on our fair island.” Verdicci pauses, frowning thoughtfully. “Though I admit all the current Admirals are. As a mere Captain of a single vessel, my voice is worth less. But it is the ship, my love of the sea and the port I call home that grants me a spot, not my birthplace.”

“…” You say nothing. You knew Langland to be a godless place, one that valued wealth above blood and honour. But you had assumed there was some semblance of national pride holding it together. From what the good Captain is telling you, any Free Captain that flies Langlish colours can have their say regardless of whether their ship was built in the docks of Pascae, Cathagi or even Norsikaa.

“This surprises you, I see. In truth, I’d not planned on attended this season’s meet. It is mostly a lot of strutting and noise, usually you will find me all too happy to miss that pavona Moretti’s grandstanding. Now that I am here though…” Captain Verdicci shrugs non-committedly. “We need supplies for the break to the Cathagi strait, this will take a day or two anyway. But for a little longer, a week at most, I can attend to some other business of my own. As for the College… it never hurts to keep one’s finger on the pulse of current affairs.”

The Captain is not asking for permission of course, this is his ship and he has the final say in how long the Coy Siren stays docked. But you get the impression that he is trying to gauge whether a slightly longer stay will go over well enough with his passengers.

===============================

> “The College of Admirals, eh? Sounds entertaining enough. As for this other matter… You wouldn’t happen to need an escort, would you?” The Captain’s apprehension indicates he has some other matter in mind, the kind where a good sword arm might be handy. And you doubt there is a better one around than yourself. Frankly you’re looking for any excuse to test out this new plate armour in earnest. [Haughty]

> “I can’t deny it would be good to stretch my legs on solid ground. See to your business, Monsieur Verdicci. I’m sure we can handle ourselves for a week.” Not a small part of you is excited to see the sights and peoples of this westernmost part of the world. Your pilgrimage is the priority, but there is no harm in seeing more of Langland than its coastline. Who knows if you’ll ever have reason to come here again? [Hearty]

> “Interesting but, as you said, not what we came here for. You have your two days, Captain.” You can hardly argue against taking on supplies for the voyage ahead, but you are impatient to continue your pilgrimage to Cathagi. You haven’t come to Langland to sightsee, who knows how long you could be delayed if embroiled in local affairs? There will be enough foreign excitement to be had in Cathagi, you’re sure. [Idealist]

The captain's good will is pretty good and this sort of event should give us a good idea on the political climate of Langland. Also I wouldn't mind putting a few langish bravos in their place should the opportunity arise.

Suspicious.... maybe we should take note and try to garner some information on this? cospicuous entry on our part might be hard but we did promise Sir Gilbern we would keep an ear out for threats to Canton and keeping the captain in good graces is a step towards that and prehaps even trade contacts should we need some.

A quick run down of local laws might be a good idea, especially if we're going to go and "do" shady stuff, additionally being in good standing may well be worth it down the line, since we may well need to arrange the return trip for the pilgrims.

I have the feeling whatever the Captain has on mind, it's a bit too "vulgar" for us. After all, we're a knight of Canton, not some Langlish mercenary! But, I would definitely want to see what the Island has to offer.

What do we know about Deepwood thus far? I don't recall hearing about it being a Fey stronghold, and considering the deep green coloring (as well as the name) it seems wilder than even the furthest glades of Motte-Fallavon.
Did the Dread Lords come from the Deepwood?

To be fair, the deep green was an artistic choice. I didn't actually have any artistic direction on that when I made it, I partly based it off the previous version of the map and party just because it's called "Deepwood". If the map was actually accurate you'd likely see a lot more dark green up by Motte-Fallavon as well

I highly suspect the Dreadlords were either an Inside Job to prevent Ardenne-Romaine from splitting off from Cantonor a Human sorceror/s
>>
>>5346825
I am also interested in the mountain-ridge in the middle of the subcontinent. It's clearly much smaller than the one separating Canton from the wastes, but it seems large enough to present a natural barrier to movement and trade.

>>5345664
Forgotten, if you don't mind i'd like to ask a few questions about the map and our general knowledge about it.
One: Is Ardenne the tiny islet right next to Deepwood or the landmass separated from the rest of Romaine by the Montbrun mountains? I seem to recall you saying that the crown of Romaine was an island city, but the map indicates that the entire region is Ardenne.

Two: Do we have any IC knowledge of the Deepwood? Any vague rumors or legends about kingdoms of the dead or strange beasts and people living there?

Three: Do Pegasi live exclusively in the Montbrun mountain range or is there a population living in the Fallavon mountains as well? Do we recall any rumors about the region?

Feel free to refuse to reply to any of these questions. I'll take anything i can get and be happy with that.
>>
>>5346887
>inside job
You think there's a faction in Canton with the ability to field legions of the dead? The Dread Lords are probably fey necromancers, yeah, but i really doubt they were in any way connected to Canton.

Okay, i just had a thought. Remember the undead thing that attacked us when we were escorting pilgrims? The thing made by desperate fey during the War of Names? The Fey were always few, but orders of magnitude more powerful sorcerers than humans. They also seem to have invented necromancy. The Dread Lords could easily be the twisted remains of those Fey nobles who first invoked magic to raise the dead for war.
>>
>>5346893
Yeah I could see that, seems believable enough. I'd also like Forgotten to answer your questions about the map so I can update it to be as accurate as possible

Oh yeah. I forgot that the map was anon-made (thanks based map-bro). Still, it seems like Deepwood might be a realm still ruled by the Wild then, especially considering what >>5346884 said.

their was a implication somewhere in the early threads or the foes pastebin about the deadmen having influence in Canton I believe, weither thats Dracaula-esque deadmen or actual mortal servants remains to be seen their is also the matter of the Romaine covenant that got slaughtered that our mother(?) mentioned in the first letter from home.

as for Fey necromancers I doubt that, the Enclave had a deepest lore book denoting it as a Anomaly and I really REALLY wish we had picked it up with the crit favor but Jess came first on that.

>>5346896
If I'm to speculate slightly on the Deepwoods, the Fae in Fallvon seem to be a Enclave, this kind of implicitly imply their is a home region and we have a very short list of where that could be.

Interesting. I haven't finished rereading the archives yet, so i'm working mostly off memory. It makes sense for the Fey to not be native to Canton, considering that the geography of the area (a large, protruding landmass cut off from the wider continent by mountains) indicates that Canton was an island until relatively recently on a geological scale. The Montbrun range is the result of Canton colliding with the rest of the continent, just like the Himalayas in real life.

Since the Wild managed to completely overtake the area, Fey must have either been seafaring (which i think we'd have heard about) or been the closest species able to survive in the climate. If Deepwood is where Fey come from it all makes sense, since Canton is probably too cold for Snakemen to inhabit.

The absence of Beastmen in Cathagi could also indicate that they evolved (presuming that any of the races evolved naturally) on Canton while it was still an island, and were incorporated into a symbiosis with the Fey when they arrived.
Of course, this would be millions of years ago. Literally just idle speculation.

“The College of Admirals, eh? Sounds entertaining enough.” You give the Captain a sidelong glance, his tone hinting his other business might go less than smoothly. “As for this other matter… You wouldn’t happen to need an escort, would you?”

“Even the sea’s furies pale before a paramour scorned.” Captain Verdicci puffs his cheeks. “But no, I should hope nothing of the sort is required. My ex-wife prefers words to blades if she wishes to cut a man down. Although… well, if things go very wrong I will keep your offer in mind.”

“Your ex… what?” In Cantôn, the bonds of marriage are for life. The only exception you can think of is a finding under Church Law that the marriage was not valid in the first place, a rare thing indeed. “Did a bishop annul the marriage?”

“Annul? I do not know this word.” Captain Verdicci now seems as confused as you, and Cantish not being his first language only exacerbates the “ I can assure you no bishop was involved in annul, I’m no cuckold. But the divorce settlement is the main reason why I have one ship, not two.”

The Captain’s response makes little sense to you. You’re not sure if this was some major mistranslation, or but you decide not to press the matter further. He does not seem offended at least, just confused why you mentioned priests when he started talking about his ‘ex-wife’. Thankfully the Captain’s First Mate, a rakish looking man by the name of Yori, approaches with a matter of docking procedure before you can let your curiosity get the better of good manners.

You’ve just finished feeding Courageous Sky a string of salted meat by the time the Coy Siren is docked. All around you the sailors busy about securing rigging and ensuring everything is locked down, drawing lots for who gets to go ashore first. The sooner they do so, the sooner they can enjoy their short respite.

“Guard your heart, my boy.” Father Towbray frowns at the Langlish port, “The riches and graces of this world of men can prove enticing, but pale to the righteousness of the Kingdom of Heaven. They are but hollow airs and vanities in the end.”

"Guarded in plate and faith both." You nod, wise words. After all, would you not cast all your worldly wealth into the sea if but the Almighty bid it? You hope so. “Would you be joining us, Father?”

“And find myself robbed blind in this godless hive of scum and villainy? I think not.” Your wiry confessor sniffs, flicking a dismissive hand as others make their way down the gangplank. “No you will find me right here, preaching the evils of usury and greed to these heathen wretches by the docks. Pearls before swine, I much suspect.”

You look down the gangway to Sister Ignatius and her nuns setting up a station already. There is already a line-up of beggars and broken things awaiting treatment, though several shuffle out of line once they realise there is no free food or spare coin to be had from the healing sisters.

“She has a kind heart, the good Sister.” Father Towbray nods, following your gaze. It has been two months and he has not asked if the Angel has visited you again, not even during your regular confessions. “Too kind, if one was to be uncharitable.”

“Too kind, Father?” You frown, watching a dockside worker with an exaggerated limp approach the sister’s stall. You’d spotted him moments before, and he seemed to be walking just fine. ]“Salve Reginae was kind. Is it not a saintly virtue?”

“Aye, she was. The very soul of mercy and kindness, our Mother was.” Father Towbray’s bony hands grasp his rough red cloth as he walks away, leaving you these parting words. “But it was not Salve Reginae’s kindness that struck the Dragon down...”

While redemption may be far from the thing we fought beneath the earth, the Almighty would surely not abide a being upon His creation which was truly beyond salvation. While Man may have been chosen to inhabit the Kingdom of Adam, all things - from the humblest worm to the mighty Dragon - are subject to His judging eye. To hate the Foe is only human, but we have been chosen by His angel to be better. We should strive to forgive the Foe even as we slay it. To deliver the judgement of Cain with the mercy of Salvae Reginae.

Yeah thats basically my theory, the Cathagi continent may be the human subcontinent and it wasn't till the Brothers landing that humans were present enough to become an endemic enough species for the Fey to deal with since humans were from that point on a systemic threat to the ecological system the Fey hold dear.

Blade and shield may be necessary, but does the Book of Brothers not teach that Salve Reginae's sacrifice was the most noble?
Men cling to hatred and fury when faced with the Foe. We cannot fault them for their failings, but we must be more. You would hate the Foe even knowing what lies at the end of that path? Having fought the monster it birthed?

Sectarianism is a tool for lesser men who are too weak of mind and heart to unify the teachings. Father Towbray - Almighty bless him - is a troubled man, his wisdom in spite. We should take this opportunity to remind him that violence is a tool used to defend the virtues the Almighty holds the highest, not something with innate value.

Can we debate him a little?
"Was she not guided in that mercy by the Almighty? It is not our due to question the Almighty plan for the Dragon but take lessons for that mercy given; for if the Dragon is deserving of mercy at the hour of his execution so too are we sinners giving the Almighty's mercy for our trespasses."

It is our duty - our trial - to keep the Almighty-fearing men and women of Adams kingdom safe from the predations of all that assails them, and to that end we take up arms. But does our feats of arms please the Almighty? If the Foe angered Him with its very presence, would He not undo them with a thought? No, He is pleased because by slaying the Foe, we protect the weak and the pious. To protect and embody all that is virtuous in this world - that is why we fight. Salve Reginae's legendary mercy is something every man, woman and child should strive towards. To let go of hatred and anger and hold only compassion in our hearts even for those our blades cut down."

>You find Father Towbray a great spiritual comfort and guide in most aspects of your faith. But in this he is wrong. Salve Reginae, Mother of Mercy, was not ‘too kind’. Kindliness is a saintly virtue. When you pass the threshold into thereafter, it is she who will waits for you at the gates of the Almighty’s Halls, wrapping the wounds of your body and drying the tears from your eyes. This much is written in the Book of Brothers. Salve Reginae forgives all and, while earthly justice must still be delivered, no one’s soul is beyond redemption. No one. [Hearty] + [Idealist]
If it its to the point where we must kill someone to prevent greater evil, that is a failing on our part or others before us. We have a Fae save us and swear herself to us The only exception I can think of is the Sons of Sin but they are....special. If the souls of those they posses are trapped in the body, killing the SoS will hopefully free them.

We promised to show Jess the whole map, though I hope hat after seeing a few foreign lands, she will return to Canton with a greater appreciation of her home. Mikhail would do with sightseeing for the same reason. It'll help him learn one or two good things about the Langlish and avoid the hundred bad things. Also, make sure they keep an eye on each other so they stay out of trouble.

Reginas sacrifice was noble and rightly so but would have been rendered pointless had Adam & Cain not razed Cathaggi and smote the Dragon, without those actions to protect the weak and smite the wicked her suffering would have been another footnote in the long grinding tragedy of misery that is Cathaggi and the slave trade. to that end Adamite or Cainite must not forget who and what the foe is capable of so that the dispensers of Regina's mercy and kindness are not abused.

The abuse of the sanctity of marriage is just another example in the long list of the examples of why we should be wary of the Langlish.

From the monsters pastebin:
>"Cursed Land/Varies – One wishes that the Deadmen were a plague unique to the lost city of Ardenne in Romaine, though the tales of a similar rot creeping across the foreign realms proves this to be otherwise. Langland mercenaries, always boisterous and ready with a tall tale, hush and murmur with darting eyes of the Black Ships from across the endless ocean to the West. Traders from the cold north speak of warriors of Norsikaa venturing across the World’s End Mountains in search of the famed treasures of legend only to return… changed."

Seems i was wrong. The dead aren't rising because the Fey delved too deep into their magics. They have been rising for a long time, all over the world...

The section on the Fey also sheds some light on their origins. They indeed come from the Deepwood, and it is implied that the beastmen were the first inhabitants in Canton too.

My brother in faith, you forget yourself! The Almighty has no need of strength: He is the ALMIGHTY. Power and violence are tools gifted to man in His wisdom only so that we may keep His virtue. It is important to recognise the necessity of violence, of course! But to call the blessed Lady Salve Reginae "too kind" is to imply that that virtue is incorrect! By the Almighty, if a knight swings his sword without protection of the faithful in his thoughts, then that man is worse than a heretic! He is - Almighty forgive me for even uttering this word - A COPPERCLIPPER!!!
>>
>>5347103
I think you're grouping the cursed lands a little too much together in their genesis, the Wodenkai was different to any of the deadmen we encountered on campaign in Romanie and to attribute either the black ship or the far north to a undead curse seems foolish without anything besides a tangential anecdote.

Not everything is related to the deadmen or they fey or even the sons of sin and the world is a vast place. Though I am reminded a little of warhammer in regards to some of these cursed lands Ardenne already felt like a Sylvania clone but the far north smacks of the Chaos wastes and the Black ships sound similar to the dark elf corsairs.

Father Towbray is right, but the option to agree with him is too extreme. Even the Blade of Cain is aimed to let the innocent live in peace, which is a form of kindness.

Wew lad slow down on the adamism Cainism is a legitimate part of the church.

More seriously you misplace his reference he refers to sister ingnatius as too kind not the Regina and indeed she cares for those who would ask aid free and readily without scrutiny but as we can see their are those who would take advantage of that kindness to the cost of those in need of genuine care and kindness.

Also if we seriously think everyone is capable of redemption where does that leave hast Vancewell? The Hewett's and our part in their attainment? Craig of low grove? The bluejays? Even the sons of sin? and all that wretched villany we encountered in Pascae from the butchery to abusers of children?

Redemption can only go so far sometimes the allmighty demands righteous retribution in this fallen world.

While Cain may have left the building of the kingdom of Heaven to his brother, it would be the gravest heresy to even imply that he did not fight to protect it! The path of Cain is thus equally violence in service to virtue!

And yes, even the blackest of hearts is not beyond redemption! You appeal to anger at the atrocities comitted by the Foe, but it is anger that blinds you to the divine mercy of the Almighty. Cain does not teach us to hate the Foe. Only to slay it. Salve Reginae teaches us to love the Foe, even as it is slain.

Right makes Might. Emile is chosen by the Almighty for this reason, and has at, at (almost) every instance, shown mercy when it was possible. He let Craig of Lowgrove live instead of executing him on the spot when that scum sucking copper clipper betrayed his trust. He allowed Sir Hewett a moment's breath during their duel when he heard him yield under his breath, only to be taken advantage of, and still ended up winning the combat. He let those slavers scurry off into those tunnels instead of cutting them down where they stood, going as far as breaking his vow of honesty to do so.
Despite these instances where bloodshed would have been a justified course of action, Emile chose mercy. Because try as the Foe may to undermine and destroy him, Emile's is Just in his actions and strives to uphold his knightly virtues, because he does the right thing. And Right Makes Might.

Also maybe there is a good reason why the Salvae Reginae and her sons were all so very different from each other. Maybe all qualities can't exist in one person, but that doesn't mean they aren't necessary to have together. Fulfilling one role doesn't grant the right to disparage the others.

And was not Adam undo by the betrayal he suffered in sacrifice? Our foes are many and duplicitous and we must be eternally vigilant in our vigil and ready to meet them be they in sheepskin or not. I do not hate the foe as you claim I bear what they are, what they desire and what they scorn and debase in mind when dealing with them, you are right Cain does not advocate violence for violences sake but he does render retribution and justice to those who would evade it.

>>5347654
thats exactly the point, trying to emulate the brothers and Salve Regina creates contridictions, as do our knightly vows the real challenge and fun is navigating them and Emilles very real human desires and emotions, the Path of Adam is not always correct nor Cain's or even the path of Thorns nor are they always wrong or prudent decisions, I suspect clinging to tightly to any path will create issues for Emille.

In the end, the college of admirals is nice to have but not necessary. By the wording of the choice, it looks like we may be going into a situation where we need our strong shield arm. In that case, give me that AV reroll.

I'm on the Daubeny Train, but it would be stupid not to make use of the intrigue bonuses in Langland of all places. The Langlish are born copper clippers and the spirit of Lady Frida should serve us well.

How often are we allowed to switch our favours Forgotten? I remember you said you would poorly on us flipping between them too frequently.

Only beacause Langland reminds me of Vancewell. I can smell the political intrigue here and while I can tell there will be excitement, I feel that the longer we stay here, the more likely there will be a death. I hope that when we get to Cathagi, its distance from home will make us think of Daubeny instead, as her smile, plus the land is larger with more areas of minimal civilization,, so there will be more bandits and AV will be more important.
Plus, it will likely have keep Daubeny's favor on longer if we wear it before the start of the inevitable timeskips.

You think on Father Towbray’s words for some time, and find yourself daring to disagree with your confessor in this. You’re no theologian, doubtless your little sister Halina would put your feelings better into words on the matter. But you know this much, kindness is a virtue not a weakness. Far from it. Cain’s rage is righteous not because it is powerful, but because it protects the powerless. It is Right that makes Might, your forefathers knew this well enough to reinforce it in their heraldry. Cain was right to strike the Dragon down, but was Adam wrong to heed his mother’s wish and spare him? No.

This fallen world needs folk like Sister Ignatius, just as it needs men such as you to protect them.

If anything, the belief that forgiveness is not beyond any of you is a great comfort. Your hand self-consciously touches where the black-lace favour rests beneath your shoulder-plate. Although you try to lead a virtuous life, especially in light of the Angel’s attention, you know you are not without sin. When you pay your obeisance to the home where Salve Reginae, Mother of Mercy, raised her sons in Nova Cathagi… For your petty human failings… you will dare to ask for forgiveness.
Almighty Willing.

>Jess the Kid Loyalty sidequest …pending…

“My thanks again for keeping an eye on these good pilgrims.” The Knights Comitas inclines his head as if to say of course. “You're too modest by far, I find that I can always count on you.”

The man has not uttered a single word since he took his oath of silence in Aubrey, where your pilgrimage first began so many months ago. But you take great comfort in his silent strength. He has never shirked from assisting you in any manner, waiting without complaint for near a month when you set off to the Fallavon wilds in search of your brother. From battling brigands in Derbyshire to standing guard over your crippled form in the wake of the Brother’s Landing vigil, he has been ever an erstwhile ally as he walks his own road to redemption.

“Land. Praise the Almighty, solid land!” Your squire sinks to his knees after coming down the gangplank. You note with some amusement that when the boy gets back up he does so hand on one knee at a time, like some half-cripple old-timer rather than the youth he is today. “Ow. Owowow…”

>Mikail is BATTERED status for the next day

You’re on the cusp of uttering some remark along those lines when you notice Jess the Kid is still hovering about the end of the gangplank. Her expressionless mask looks skittishly to the left and right, up and down. Finally, tentatively, they take their first step off the gangplank onto foreign shores. They take a second step, then a third, hopskipping like they’re afraid the cobblestones will burn their feet. On the fourth step they pause and, again tentatively, lift up their left boot to inspect the pile of dung they stepped in. You’ve always known Jess to be sure-footed, so you have to supress a sly chuckle at seeing them put a foot wrong right in front of you. Judging from the jerk of her neck at you, you didn’t supress it nearly enough.

“…” Jess the Kid looks up at you, their porcelain mask sabotaging all attempts at discerning their expression. With great trepidation, they unsling a pouch from their neck and hold it out for inspection. “…Firren. Terra, firren!”

You step back in shock at her spoken words, before quickly looking around to see if anyone’s noticed the Fae dialect. No one has, though that is to be expected at the dockside ringing with a dozen different languages. As for the pouch, you peer closer with no small amount of apprehension as Jess unwraps it. It… appears to be… dirt. This wode Fae archer of yours has been carrying a pouch of dirt slung around their neck for Almighty knows how long. They cradle the pouch cautiously, as if they were a fat merchantman protecting his coinpurse in a bad part of town.

“That’s… very nice.” You offer a nonplussed compliment. “Yes, very nice dirt indeed.”

“Terra. Firren.” The Fae says insistently, before giving up and wrapping the soil back up in the pouch and placing it around her neck again. “Laksa, terra firren.”

“I’m sorry I don’t-“ You shake your head before turning to your squire out of exasperation. “Mikail, do you have any idea what they’re on about?”

“Dunno, milord. I don’t speak… whatever foreign tongue he’s wagging.” Mikail shrugs with all the usual intemperance of teenage boys around the world. “What kind of archer goes by the name ‘Jess’ anyway? That’s such a girly name.”

You look askance at your squire’s use of word ‘he’. Last you checked, the Fae archer was female. A lanky, tall female with no breasts to speak of, yes. But still certainly ‘she’. Most folk see a lanky archer wearing a mask and little else, but Mikail was there when the Fae Outcast first joined your ranks. Your squire can be dull but surely he has not forgotten…

“Um, milord…” Mikail points at the diminishing figure of Jess, wandering further into the crowded town.

> “Perhaps they need a little space. Leave them be, and be about our own business.” Jess the Kid has always come and gone as she pleased. If she needs time to adjust to the strange scenery, so be it. Such a strange creature, who is to say whether your presence would be considered supportive or oppressive. She will make her way back to you on her own terms. [Haughty]

> “*sigh* Let me try talking to them again, see what they’re about.” The language barrier is going to be a great difficulty, but the fact that she is talking at all is a minor miracle. They might be the first words she’s spoken since you left Fallavon. It’s worth risking a scene in public for some understanding. [Hearty]

I want to ask what she meant, but I feel like that will become apparent. I think she either wants to leave a bit of dirt in each land she visits, or she wants to collect a bit of dirt from each land. Its best to keep an eye on her. She did well enough in the capitol of copper clippers, but each land is a new forest, maybe, almighty preserve us, a new Fallavon.

New ID rollers will not be counted unless linking back.

Tracking Roll: Keep up with Jess the Kid’s wanderings
> Oblivious Quarry / Crowded Streets 80DC
> Courageous Sky +1 Re-Roll Using this re-roll will advertise that you have a Legatus Griffinhawk in your possession.
> Struggling Squire +1 Adverse Re-Roll
> 80DC

Double Fail = Not exactly low profile. Even in a bustling port town, you and your companions make an impression.
0 = Where in the Pit am I now? In addition to losing your Fae archer, Mikail has also lagged behind and gotten himself lost. You’ll need to track him down before he gets himself into trouble with the locals.
1 = She is a sneaky one. Even though Jess doesn’t appear to be actively evasive you still lose track of the Fae in the crowded streets and winding passages of Capara, but at least you and Mikail are not completely turned around.
2 = There you are. You’ve kept up with the Fae, but her progress is barred by an obstacle of the local Langlish kind and her communication skills leave much to be desired. You will have to intervene.
3 = Everything went better than expected. You keep pace with the Fae, and at a slow enough pace you were able to enjoy some of the sights on offer in Capara. Nothing bars her way and you eventually reach her destination.
Double Pass = So that’s what she’s after… Observing Jess as she explores town gives you some insight into her goal.

>2 SUCCESS: There you are. You’ve kept up with the Fae, but her progress is barred by an obstacle of the local Langlish kind and her communication skills leave much to be desired. You will have to intervene.

Once you’re away from the docks the first thing you notice about the Langlish town of Capara proper is the colour. And such colours! So bright and so vivid it dazzles your eyes! Violet curtains on common three-to-four storey apartments, bright orange overhangs on humble vegetable stalls, garish turquoise garments and purple hosen. You’ve walked pasted a While Port Bounty projected wealth and power in its gothic architecture, the drab slums and suffocating streets now strike you as awfully dreary. A dizzying array of dyes decorate the clothes, stalls and buildings. As if each occupant was determined to push the limit on how lively and loud their garments can be, as if colour itself was a sign of wealth.

While you keep pace with Jess the Kid easily for most of them time, you nearly lose her after a sharp turn down a side street. The second time this happens you consider bidding Courageous Sky to follow her from above. But the thought of a specimen of the exotic Fallavon avian persuasion soaring above the skies of Capara gives you pause. While a masked Fae archer might not garner a second glance from the general Langlish public, a Legatus Griffinhawk in the sky very well could.
A non-stop flight across the sea would be a harrowing journey even for the greatest of raptors, but if you wanted to send a message back to Port Bounty you likely could. You’d not risk such a trial on Courageous Sky simply to send a letter home, but if there is some emergent reason to do so you may consider it. They truly are impressive creatures, no wonder the ancient Cathagi empire of old used them as couriers. You wonder why Cantôn has not done the same… They are not unheard of as pets but to your knowledge there has been little attempt to re-establish the Legatus network of old. Such a creature might be remarked upon in the skies of Aubrey or Pascae, but most would assume it to be the exotic pet of some local lord. Here though, such creatures are much rarer and therefore more valuable. For those reasons to decide not to call upon your griffinhawk unless the need is dire.

Even without aerial assistance you keep manage not to lose sight of Jess the Kid. You watch her pause at an open grassy courtyard further into town, a row of trees bearing oranges line the pathway leading up to a palatial looking villa on the hill. She shifts from one foot to another, considering something but ultimately unhappy with whatever the manicured garden bed offers. There are no railings or patrolling guards, any beggar seems free to help themselves to the hanging fruit. In fact one does so right in front of you, a hangable offence in some Fallavon orchards. You have little time to dwell on it thought. Jess is on the move again, orange in hand.

You briefly lose sight of her for only a few seconds, but when you turn the corner you can see the scene play out before you like a tragic play. Jess walks forward, blissfully staring at an orange in her hand, accidentally stepping in-between a Langlish bravo buying a meal from one of the stallholders. The bravo steps back into the street proper with an indignant expression on his face, only to come into the path of another bravo strolling long the lane.

“Ehi, sto camminando qui!” It’s hardly a bump, more of a slight brush but the two men are immediately hostile to one another. The second bravo, the one bumped into, flicks a dismissive gesture at the first.

“Occupare tutta la strada, perché no? Sciocco dai piedi piatti…” The first bravo, not one to back down, flings his arm wide and forces Jess to skip back as he swaggers into the street proper.

“Chi chiami sciocco, merda per i cervelli?” The second bravo draws himself up, hand already on the hilt of his long steel. “Tua madre era un criceto e tuo padre odorava di sambuco!”

“Provami allora, bocca grande!” The ring of steel carries in the street as the second bravo draws his blade while Jess quite casually attempts to walk past them on one side and then the other. “Sono Mercuzio della famiglia Moretti! Il tuo nome e la tua famiglia, quindi potrei intaccarmi la cintura.”

It is of little use as the two bravos jostle in the street, blocking the way as surely as a castle wall. They manage to take up the entire pathway with their strides and wild hand gestures. Both of them carry the long and short steel blades you remember the Golden Sun mercenary in Fallavon using. Unlike the Primus Pilus though, they are bedecked in fine clothe and a padded jacket rather than heavy armour. You make a mental note that the jackets might offer some protection against a slicing motion, you don’t think they will offer much protection against a solid thrust from the rapiers they’re both equipped with.

* correction, it is the FIRST bravo (the one who bumped into the other) who first draws steel.

To be fair Jess’ nonchalance at the pending violence is shared by many other bystanders, a few customers of the nearby stall shy away but only far enough for the more entrepreneur among them to start making bets. You can’t tell if they are making bets on whether there will be a fight, who will win or how long it will last. Jess stands a metre or so away from the pair, her back to you as you brush past the crowding spectators. It’s impossible to tell whether she is annoyed at the obstacle or confused at the verbose argument taking place in front of her.

“… ” The second bravo, the one bumped into, looks his counterpart up and down, making a critical assessment of his opponent and finding him wanting. “Sono Giovanni della famiglia Giorgio. La lama più veloce di Langland e presto anche Cathagi. Una lama così affilata e lunga non dovrebbe essere impugnata da un uomo con un cazzo così piccolo.”

You don’t speak the language, but you know fighting words when you hear them.

Interesting reflection on the Griffinhawks. Perhaps Cantonese wanted to distance themselves from what was seen as a Cathagi custom? Maybe the Andrei can re-start something of a personal network - the women of the family would certainly approve if nothing else...

My first instinct is to get our faefu out of here, but she should be accustomed to duels by now so she probably won't commit a faux-pas here. Plus the ire of these two men isn't directed at her, so let's have a look at that so called fastest blade of Langland.

“This should be entertaining.” You hold your arm out, blocking Mikail behind you.

You don’t speak the local language, but the tone of the words seem crystal clear to you. Some insult or other has been offered and violence is imminent. Your intervention would most likely only draw the ire of both parties to yourself and Jess, and you trust Jess well enough to not get herself stabbed in a fight between two strangers in the street. As for yourself, your curious to see if these Langlish swordsmen fight as well as they posture.

“Disegna il tuo acciaio, ruffiano.” The first bravo snarls, steel on the hilt of his short blade rasping as he draws his second sword. “O essere nominato per sempre un codardo.”

“Non ho paura di te, povero sciocco. The second bravo has yet to draw a single blade, his right hand resting lazily on his long steel. “Vieni da me, se apprezzi così poco la tua vita.”

Jess at least has the good sense to skip back sharply as the first bravo lunges forward at the second, short steel overheard and long steel flicking out. You blink. Had your attention not been entirely focused on the second man’s reaction, you would have missed the motion entirely.

The first bravo stumbles, dropping his short steel to clutch at the rapidly splotching mass of red spreading from his chest. He collapses face first at the feet of his killer. You note with some interest that there is no exit wound in his back, the second bravo’s long steel penetrated just deep enough to pierce the heart through the chest and not an inch further. Masterful.

You struggle to piece together exactly what happened in that half-second, notwithstanding it occurred right before your very eyes. As the first bravo lunged the second twirled inward, until his left shoulder rested side-by-side with the first bravo’s right shoulder. You know he drew his long steel at some point, he’s wiping a speck of blood off it this very moment, But the angle was all wrong for a thrust under the first bravo’s guard. To have pierced him in the chest, not the gut, the second bravo would have to have flicked his long steel over the back of his own neck and shoulder. Completely impossible, at least with an arming sword, and any Cantôn Master-at-Arms would rightly beat his pupils black and blue for even trying such a thing in the tiltyard.

But with a rapier…

“Qualcuno di voi dubita che sia stato lui l'aggressore?” You narrow your eyes at the victorious bravo defiantly scans the crowd watching the lesser swordsman leaking red out into the street. He flicks two copper pieces onto the body of his fallen opponent. “Una moneta per il becchino e un'altra per la sua donna preferita.”

No one in the crowd seems to take issue with the slaying of the first bravo, the few that do seem truly discontent are the ones handing their coin over to the wiser gamblers. As this goes Jess the Kid looks away from the corpse in front of her and, as if spotting you for the first time all day, gives you a little wave. The second bravo glances at her and then you with a raised eyebrow, but says nothing as he sheaths his long blade.

> “Very pretty. Against a single human opponent, at least.” The man doubtless has skill, but all the same you’ve little intention of dallying with foreign killers in the street. You continue on your way and pass him by without comment, this time with Jess more readily keeping pace. Hopefully you’ll wrap up this little harebrained distraction before the sun sets. [Haughty]

> “Marvellous. Simply marvellous. Mikail, make sure Jess doesn’t run off just yet. I simply must speak with this man.” All around you seemed to accept the confrontation and lethal result without particular comment, perhaps this is the way of things in this barbaric foreign land. That doesn’t stop you from commending the man on his self-evident skill. Hopefully he speaks a word or two of passing Cantish. [Hearty]

> “To the death? For brushing past you in the street? For shame.” You had expected some contest of arms, true. But this was sheer butchery. You were beside yourself with guilt when you accidentally slew Sir de Broulert, though he was the challenger. This man demonstrates none of that remorse. Even if the law will not apprehend him, you will offer reprimand for his callousness. [Idealist]

[Idealist]

(2) Lessons in Langlish Swordplay

>The forms of the truly talented Langlish swordsmen are like nothing in the Cantôn playbook. You are already considering what warforms would best be suited to counter such an opponent, or how you can adapt ill-advantaged stances to better match this school of swordsmanship. I feel like we should tak on a reprimand for the callous taking of a life even if we don't take the idealist route.

It depends. Most soil taken directly off the ground has a high enough osmotic potential to let a seed absorb enough water to sprout. Of course, different types of soil have different saturation capacities of water, but i doubt that the lush woods of Fallavon grow on top of sand.

While I would love to give him a talking down for such barbarous behaviour, I would be more keen to it we were in Canton and witnessed something like this, we are in Langland and I don't feel the need to get into trouble for something these natives consider a daily affair.

I'm gonna be honest here, a lot of the enemy stances end up hurting them more than help them with how the combat system is slightly skewed in our favor. I'd rather have the AV re-roll, especially with our absolutely dumb high AV at this point, than have the Blademaster re-roll.

One: Is Ardenne the tiny islet right next to Deepwood or the landmass separated from the rest of Romaine by the Montbrun mountains? I seem to recall you saying that the crown of Romaine was an island city, but the map indicates that the entire region is Ardenne.
Ardenne is the entire region, of which Romaine is the rump state remainder of. The centre of power of old Ardenne is indeed the tiny islet on the map. I will have to refer to my notes to see if I actually ever locked in it’s name before it became known as the Isle of the Damned a few centuries ago.

>Two: Do we have any IC knowledge of the Deepwood? Any vague rumors or legends about kingdoms of the dead or strange beasts and people living there?
IC your of the Deepwood is so severely limited it’s virtually less a foreign land and more like an ethereal otherworldly realm where mankind never broached. Scholars of Canton would know that Fae reside there in numbers, but not whether they are a kingdom per se or even in charge. In the o
