/qst/ - Quests

Life goes on inside the kobold settlement, despite the constant threat from living plant creatures, goblinoid raids, and maybe humans eventually?... Never mind that, there's always mundane work to be done here. Tools and items must be manufactured. Recently, there seems to be a trend of leather working and weaving to be going through the camp among the crafters. Blood and combat is a common theme in the threading and decoration of course. Most of your minor metal income still goes towards arming the warriors, leaving you with almost none left for anything else. They're definitely getting better at making them though. You spend most of the day in your room, considering the nature of the various crystals you've collected. Both the tainted electrical, and curse laden ones

Several small tremors shake the ground in the evening, collapsing a section of the mud layer of the mines, though luckily none died in that. The tunnel to the underground lake seems to be halfway at least. While above ground a gathering of activity is taking place on the edge of the forest. The dryad creatures seem to be bumbling there. Strange since they usually stick to their magical tree...

It's time for you to do some more enchanting, a thing you've gotten very fond of over the days. This time, you try it with the various crystals you've acquired. The first that you make is of the electric crystals. The result is, well... Effective? The head is extremely sharp, and whatever it cuts will roil with the destructive energies imparted on impact. This unfortunately also leads to wielder getting a heavy helping of that same energy. They might survive using it for extended periods, and they would be very effective while doing so... But they could also be doomed to an agonizing death.

The second project, is the hex crystal. It's full of the curses that soak the southern swamp and coalesce there. It has violet hue to the metal after it's finished and a jagged edge. It seems to be above average in its performance, but not much else from use on a practice log. You can feel there's some kind of malevolence inside the damn thing though...

All these cursed crystals would be better put to use improving the general utility of your warriors. All of the remaining rocks are used to create these hex axes, so at least they can fight more effectively. The decay axe... That will be put aside. Far too dangerous to use for now.

The ones you do have are immediately put to use, fending off the gaggles of forest creatures congregating at the edge of the forest. They seem incredibly persistent and increasingly bold in their incursion. The axes seem decently effective, as the malevolence inside them releases on their victims. It seems to make anyone hit by them 'unlucky'. More prone to slip-ups or something like that? That's at least what they tell you, since you can't vouch for it yourself.

There's discussion among your administration levels, as the constructive side wants to use the abundance of lumber to make the above ground section of the settlement to become a fortress over the current palisades you have now. The warmaster though just wants to have another go for the tree instead of waiting around. Another one of those tremors annoys you while you think.

Enough is enough, these things will be dealt with. Torches are made and first are started, the forest will be set ablaze... As best as it can in this damp place at least. Luckily it isn't raining yet today, and just incase the foliage is cleared out around the camp so that it won't spread inside.

In fair time, the fires get bigger and become an active danger. They create a little chaos for the creatures as they actively try to avoid the burning areas, clearly frightful of catching fire. All are ready to set out into the forest and hunt down the damn tree to cut it down

Not willing to risk the fire, you take the safer route through the trees. The wet trees unfortunately make a lot of smoke, making the quick march through, unpleasant to say the least. On top of that there are still other dryad creatures that stick around and must be dealt with.

You get through in the end, and by the time you reach the area of the tree, fatigue has definitely taken its toll. You've got some smoke in your lungs yourself. The tree seems much less defended than last time while the fire blazes behind you. The wizard is nowhere to be seen, but it still has a swarm of the things surrounding it

You sit with the approaching flames to your back and launch slings bullets and arrows to the tree guardians. They do not wait idly while this happens though and quickly rush to meet you in combat. They strike your force's wall with a rage, gnashing against your axes and shields while you hack them up and get scratched in turn.

It's a fair struggle, that is until the ground bursts. Roots stab upward with clods of soil sending the formation into disarray. The creaking wooden wizard himself has emerged from underground. "You think that setting fire to the woods is enough to stop me? It is simply another part of the cycle of decay. You shall experience this first hand." His scythe swings out as he leaps into the disorganized kobolds!...

91, 60, 82

It’s a desperate struggle to form up after the sudden burst, but your superior leadership wins out yet again. All those that can are dragged into place to wall against the beasts who are attempting to surround. The new axes easily slice through their bark and timber which is quite fortunate. Things might not have turned out as well otherwise as the forces are quite exhausted.

You, on the other hand are forced full time into dealing with the wizard’s stand-in. It has learned from the last time and seems to want to throw you off as much as possible. They twist the plants to lash at your forces while you chase. Finally an opening seems to show itself, so you surge forward… And the scythe lurches severing your arm! You were expecting something like that though! Through the pain you stab the lightning stave forward and stab it through the constructs chest causing great sparks and flam from the wooden thing! You dizzily grab your arm from the ground while they dig the stick out of their chest. It hurts so much but it feels great at the same time. A dead kobold is near your feet… You hold the severed limb to its stuck and mend it using the flesh of the fallen. Good as new!

The wizard thing is pretty charred by now, still standing with the intent to kill. The wooden things still want to trample over your entourage with unending numbers. They don’t seem to be stopping…

1, 61, 90 - Berserker

The only way out of this is to chop down the gods damned tree! You decide to press the force into the tree's direction no matter what. All that remains of their composure turns to a frenzy. Wooden claws and the harassing wizard bleed the life out of them as they viciously hack their way through the monsters. Every few feet marks another kobold down. No one fights as viscously as you though. It's a blending of weapons hacking, slashing, and firing without a moments rest. Every death only fuels you're rage filled frenzy as their flesh stiches your own wound. If only sap was a replacement for blood, this would be fantastic!

It feels as if there's another hand swinging your weaponry by the time you reach the tree. It's with feverish hate that the thing is hacked into timber. When the cord is severed all the dolls fall to the ground or stir into disarray. Around you, out of the 24 kobolds that went with you, only 6 remain. There is no meat left on their bodies. Only bones. In the end, things are now quite silent. Only a hard gaze from nowhere is felt upon you....

The dead are recovered, well... The bones that remain after their bodies were consumed. They are laid to rest about the shrine to Baphomet where the macabre items would fit. Though when you spend some time near the shrine you hear a familiar voice in your head.

"A wonderfully violent battle. If only sap could be substitute for blood." The dark god speaks to you as you sit over the bones of those you lead to strife and death, and subsequently used their very flesh to fuel your furious struggle. "I acknowledge your will and prowess, so I offer you a gift. Though you are mere kobolds, this sect shows promise, and much more combat is to come. The painful loss of your troop is too much to take. The ever dwindling population of your tribe is a constant issue, and if you keep encountering dangers like this, you'll never get anywhere. So you ask of the deity to give you more warriors.

"So be it, if you trust them enough over your own skill." The ground shifts and a deep red pool emerges from the ground near the totem. The bones of the dead kobolds are dragged into the liquid along with many pounds of flesh left out as offerings. It bubbles and roils for moments before a scaled claw clutches the mud, a figure dragging itself out. A kobold with black scales, red eyes and curved horns. "Feed it and you will have your warriors. By blood they are born." With that, there is no more talk. The one who emerged from the pool is followed by others. They look familiar in some ways but they are not the same. They don't seem as smart as the average kobold and there is something off about how the interact with others. Fully formed and adult, but with no memories...

>A demonic kobold spawning pool has appeared. 8 kobolds have emerged from it.

When you try to integrate them and have a large hunt to commemorate the fallen, you learn that they are very adept in the subject. Must be the touch of the constantly warring god. Is this much influence a good thing?... The other kobolds are wary of them, and you don't blame them. Strange things.

You decide to try your best and get your new strange warriors aquainted with the tribe. A little celebration is held both for the victory over the dryad once again, and the new boon you've been given. From the talk that you've been hearing the feelings are definitely mixed. There are... Pieces of familiarity? One even suggested that they're stitched together from those that died with filler stuffed in. The situation seems stable for now, at least enough for you to scout for the goblins.

They appear to come from the north west, which is strange considering the forest partially grows over that area. It's kept in check though by border of the metal fields. The plants seem to have a tougher time growing over that place. A new slight chasm has emerged from the ground. Small pockets of the tainted crystal stick from the walls emitting their hateful aura.

There definitely appears to be goblin activity over there, though they're on alert now. Many webs cover the trees and vegetation over there. Why have they not been brutalized by the wizard like you have? In other scouting news, there have been inklings of humans out east. Apparently more scouts?... Your leader in construction seems to have gotten paranoid from all the recent fighting as well. He wants to spend the extreme excess lumber from our tree chopping to build the above ground portion of the village into a fortress as we rarely use it for living space now. It would be a lot of effort to go through and be quite visible.

No, there has been enough fighting for now. Your effort is better spend recovering from the losses you've accrued. The forests nearby have been quelled, so there is safety when you take lumber from the excessive trees. There's so much of it since you've been cutting them down, so they'll be put to use turning the above ground camp into a fortress. Over the days, some progress is made. The makeshift palisades are fixed up with wood, and made into more proper walls. Nails are difficult to made, but very useful. Your craftsmen have started to use the crystal smelter again, but have seemed to devised a sort of system so that the side effects of the poisoning are minimal. Good that they're taking initiative...

Overall everyone seems to appreciate the rest. Progress on the tunnel to the underground lake seems to be finishing up with the slaves working. Somewhere in the mud layers of the mines, a large root is discovered. It seemed to have been burrowing intently on the direction of your settlement from far away. Maybe a good thing that you took care of the tree node when you did?...

Today will be another day of calm. Your focus will be a small festival for Krish'gah. These strange kobolds are to be told of your traditions and culture, it wont do to have them be such... Blank slates. Is it cause for worry seeing how much your tribe has strayed from regular kobold nature here? With how much death there has been, the black scaled kobolds that are born here, and the new demonic kobolds have started to become a majority.

The last of the spirits stolen from the human camp has been spread around. One kobold tried making a strange mushroom wine, but it didn't turn out well. Truly a shameful time.

Below, the tunnel finally breaks through into the underground lake. It's a relatively moderate sized chamber, filled with water from underground passages. No easy to access tunnels lead further into the caves, but there are a few holes abound. With scaffolding it could become a fair area to expand for use. The most notable feature though, is the decent Iron vein tucked away in a corner of the ceiling. It's leagues better than the bog iron that you've been using so far.

Beyond the outer walls, smaller houses are reconstituted into fortifications. A main keep area that can hold up against attacks from the outside. The first floor is in progress, mainly leading to you planning around a main square, where the shrines and pool, and other such spots that can't be moved must be. It's busy work to relay orders on such a large construction. The progress over these two days is impressive at least.

The festivities conclude mostly without incident. Thinking on the whole subject you consider that it might not be so bad to continue down this path. The benefits have been enough to make sure your group survived. Maybe it wasn't necessary to stay here. You could have left at any time and continued to somewhere better, but this is where your choices have lead you. Is it possible for gods to get jealous of each other? Hopefully you won't have to deal with that in the future.

2d100 best of 3 for searching the south

Meanwhile at home, the subject of food comes up. While there is regular hunting of the swamp, your diet mainly consists of frog, fish, alligator, and mushrooms. There's a growing desire for some kind of new food to occupy our tastes. Maybe it could be from the forest, there's potential hauntable creatures there that seem to be returning after the wooden beasts have left. Then again, we could try and make booze of some kind from various plantsuffs, though our last attempt didn't end up well.

All sorts of herbs and plants are gathered up in order to test their use as spices and flavoring in the foods you eat. Some taste... alright, nothing special and mostly very bland. Others are actually terrible and only lead to food poisoning. There is a very nice one you've found though. Besides the bad berries you've had before, there's a different one. It's purple and sort of bitter, but it tastes better when you cook it. Others have taken to calling them elderberries, and they seem to be a nice addition to the diet.

Progress is good! Working on solid reasoning, you travel your way through the south of the swamp, past the pocked field and towards the frog lake where the witch would most likely be. Once you're there though, it takes hours of searching to find the witch in question. The large toad her hut rests on sits in a secluded little corner of the water. The diminutive girl is resting on the edge and looks to you. "And what is it that you seek me out for?"

You at first tell her about your relation to Baphomet and how things have developed, but she doesn't seem very interested in the subject. "You've intertwined yourself with the goat well? Do not come to me for any guidance, I do not care for the pursuit of bloody death from them." How not useful. When the talk turns to how you've taken to the forest wizard she's a little more straight forward. "You still fight with Reylas? To be expected, he holds grudges and this is likely to last until one of you are dead. He has always been unreasonable. Less so than the fiddler, but more violent."

To that you move towards more local topics. Things such as the very corner of swamp you're standing on now. "While I do not care if you take to amphibians in your corner, do not tamper with this place. This is a sanctuary for them and I won't take kindly to the pond being tainted. The birds though I care not for." Tainting the water is a bit strange considering this whole place is cursed already. "If you wish to know of this quarter's predicament, then to put it simply the last of those who settled in this place died terribly. They rotted away and left their resentment to fester and roil. This is the result of that. It's quite a good place to ferment these hexes and torments if you will..." How very ominous. It explains the broken church and other things left behind.

Before you decide to leave the subject turns to food, to which she's puzzled for a moment before responding. "Watercress is the main food of mine, but I assume you wouldn't eat such a thing. Perhaps you would prefer the cranberries since elderberries are edible to you. Since you seem very fixated on alcohol, elderberries make a fine wine..."

After that you simply ask her for anything that could possibly done for a favor to get something in return. She doesn't seem to interested in it until she comes up with something seemingly. "To the west, in the great tainted ravine. There is one of mine there, go find them and deal with them if you wish. There is no great need so far. Otherwise there is a strange fruit that tends to grow in Reylas' grove. I very much may like to have that. If that is all, I have business to attend to." She finishes before sitting back down and continuing to do nothing in particular.

It will be so, and as you turn back to go home you decide to make it more worthwhile. Some more of those cursed crystals are gathered from the water. You do your best to prevent the bad stuff from leaking out and spilling on the group and mostly come out pretty fine before you head back home.

Sorry for the delay, was just dying for a moment.

With some more time taken at home and new knowledge, you successfully start testing with making wine out of elderberries. Alcohol is one of the pillars of civilization after all. Naturally it's going to take a long time given the nature of wine.

Personally though, you choose to pursue the study of magic a little more. Haven't had much time to seclude yourself in yourself in your room and practice. Sadly one of your apprentices died in the forest in that horrible fight.

Time to see what you can do with nature magic, one of your least used abilities. You set yourself aside an area to manipulate and adjust plants. Your methods are wild and experimental, trying to push the limits and boundaries of what you can do to learn as much as you can. It's useful at first, discovering what makes a plant grow, what makes it wither and die.

The problem with magic is when you don't know what you're doing with it things can go wrong. Things such as the berry plant you're manipulating right now. As the magic flows through it your focus in what to do slips. With the speed you were working, the sudden build up works itself. The vines grow and thorns stab outwards. In a moment you're caught in a net of sharp brambles covering the entire room. It's painful disentangling from the mess to say the very least but maybe the pain will stick the lesson in your head better....

What happens if we hunt some alligators and chuck them into the hell portal? Do we get gator bolds? Demon gators?

As your fortress begins nearing its basic completion at this point you consider that some pathways or roads should be established for easy travel through the swamp. It's nothing too serious considering that you don't want to lead anyone back to the camp, but it'll help. Your people are used to traveling through certain routes, but a bridge here, or the clearing of annoying brush will help. It's going to take a while due to the nature of traveling back and forth and distances.

Some more meat is tossed into the demon pool. Butchered alligator parts of course. A few more kobolds emerge from the bloody pond, though they seem relatively the same, though with more scattered and unclear thoughts than even the ones that came before them. The extra hands around the camp will still be appreciated.

The days go by and as you think about it you're approaching the 100th day in this hellish swamp. Maybe a celebration is in order to figure out what to do then? You think you can hear some string music somewhere in the camp. Puts you in a good mood thinking on all the progress you've made as a leader....

Plans will be for a decent festival to celebrate your longevity in this place. Time has tested you and you're determined to see another hundred days, and more after that. Maybe you can break open one of the fermenting barrels early for it if things go well?

The string music goes on for a while, and it's only after it stops that you recognize it as a fiddle without a source.
