The drive is…oddly quiet, despite being ran with several jeeps. Jessica is sleeping, still, after being briefly woken and fed a few apples. They’d opted to put her in a vehicle with Izumi, unsurprisingly. “We’re not going to mince words here. We need the greenhouse as intact as possible,” Lia says. “If that girl can do what she did again, that’ll be lovely, but regardless we need the place cleaned out. As I said before, we’re not expecting you to handle it all yourselves. If you can get us in, we’ll focus on things from there.”

“It would more expedient to help you afterwards anyway,” you respond. Starting to get tired of all the zombies and tentacles and whatnot. Even the costume is starting to chafe a bit, you think. You don’t want to overburden Jessica, but hopefully this wouldn’t be TOO difficult either way, and rather quick.

That hope dies just a little when she points out exactly what you’re up against, coming out of a bridge tunnel near the outskirts of the city and looking ahead, down a small hill to where the street terminates into a T-section and the city proper nearly ends into more suburbs and grassland. She’d stopped the convoy to show you. Straight ahead and a bit to the right is where she’s pointing, and, well…

While in terms of size, it’s not larger than the tortoise thing (barely), it is…far less of a singular entity, clearly. It’s wrapped in a mass of smaller, thinner tentacles, like wild vines having overtaken the whole shebang. You can barely see the glass underneath the mass, even. And clearly there’s a number of Wracked nearby, walking through the wide grounds given it. Several of them are large, and…new to you. Even from this distance, you can see some with strange protrusions around their necks…almost like petals, ironically enough. Or maybe that’s intentional?

“Yikes!” Zipper says, almost waking Jessica up. “That’s a mess. And you need to clean THAT up?”

“It is,” Lia admits grimly. “Which is the whole issue. Strike down a few and the rest will come after you, if the roaming Wracked don’t first. Very territorial. And yet this commercial greenhouse area would be the best boon we’ve had in some time. With your abilities, we stand much more of a chance of taking it for ourselves.”

Well, as long as it ends this job faster.

“Anything we should know before we get down there?” Zipper asks.

“Mostly that those Wracked are…special,” she explains. “In that they don’t seem to die like normal Wracked. If you don’t eradicate their heads and torsos entirely, they seem to be able to…grow back.”

THAT is unexpected. “Wait, WHAT? Like, regenerate?”

She shrugs, slowly. “Somewhat?” They seem to plant themselves into the ground if they can. And in a manner of minutes, one becomes two, becomes however many. They just…grow back the parts they lost from the soil. It’s proven to be a…challenge, to say the least. From the few attempts we made already, we surmise that that’s due to a sort of…centerpiece, in the greenhouse. We think it’s the source of the encasement, too. We’ve tried to assault it, but it’s a risky venture.”

“No shit…” Zipper mutters. “Not if you wanted the greenhouse in one piece afterwards.” She looks behind her to the jeep following her- Izumi was in that one, along with Jessica. “So, what’s the idea?”

“We can’t exterminate the Wracked surrounding the place without them growing back; and we sincerely don’t have the muscle to force our way into the greenhouse safely- or rather, we didn’t. But now?” She looks at you. “Well, with your help, we have a chance. You can detain the Wracked here, much like you did when we first met. We’ll go into the greenhouse and do our best to destroy the thing inside. We’ve got a specialist team ready and armed for it.”

…they sound more like they’re paramilitary than a religious group running a refuge and orphanage.

So, we could awaken up a bunch of those creatures and herd them into sticky mana traps or whatever other spells, then try to go inside and pull out the centerpiece's core to stop them...

Also, we should ask the nun why they seem rather militia-y for a religious orphanage after we're done.

“I’m guessing fire isn’t a viable method?” you ask.

She shakes her head. “It’s useful in small doses, but considering it IS a greenhouse, the risk of burning the whole works if we use it too much is far too high. It’s left us at something of an impasse until recently.”

“How’s that?” Zipper asks. “Can’t think of a much better way to kill off something like this aside from acid.”

“Exactly,” she confirms, much to the surprise of both yourself and her. “We’ve managed to acquire several canisters of sulphuric acid recently, and we’ve rigged up some systems to inject it into the source problem.”

A moment of silence as that information is digested. “You have WHAT.” Zipper asks in disbelief. “I mean, sure, sulfuric acid might well do the trick, but…”

“We’re prepared for it- and more importantly, we DON’T have a enough to simply use willy-nilly,” she insists. “We won’t be spraying it everywhere; we’re just trying to exterminate the core of the issue. Ideally, we can get close enough without much issue, and then hit it directly.”

“Hm.” you don’t know how you feel about that, but it’s an idea. “I will be utilizing fire, nonetheless,” you state. “I’ll be careful about the surroundings.” With that, you remember a few things that might be useful. The Enchanted Bracers from the last job should be of some help; it’s not much effort to slip them on as Lia begins a final check sequence with her people. You’ll need to remind Izumi of the fire sword she’s got; and get the healing scarf on Jessica if you can before they go- you don’t know if it’ll do anything, but something would be better than nothing. Especially if she has to help out.

You feel just about topped off in terms of mana after a discreet usage of a crystal fortunately; you shouldn’t need to worry about that in this case. You’re also going to need to refill them- that was your last, you think. The condenser has been…slow, to say the least, but useful.

>Current Mana: 11,500/11,500

To your surprise, it's Izumi who contacts you, as everyone gets set. "It's proving rather tough to get them to let me fight," she explains quietly as your stone goes off. "I'm worried I may have to slip out..."

You have to think about it for a bit, but ultimately make a decision. “No, stay here with Jessica. I'll call if she's needed and you can come with.”

“Understood, then,” she agrees, though she seems a bit put out nonetheless. “She IS still sound asleep…”

“Here,” you say, pulling out the scarf from your bag. “See if this’ll do anything for her. Once we’ve started, see if you can maybe provide support from a distance. Can you snipe without getting too many looks?”

“Hmmm…I’ve seen a rifle or two, but taking my own out in privacy and setting up might be a bit of an issue. Still, I’ll see what I can do,” she decides. Alright, then. You’ll have to work with that, you suppose.

It doesn’t take much more work to see that they’re set up. A ragtag group, some in robes, some in half-done military wear, others in essentially street clothes. It’s not the most inspiring organization, but they at least seem determined. As well as still a bit anxious about you, judging from the looks sent your way. But you can see Lia turning back to you, and you have to focus on her again.

“We’re all ready. You go in, clear a path to the greenhouse and keep the rabble off of us. We’ll handle the rest,” she restates. “You ready?”

You nod, as does Zipper; she’s got her pistols ready; they may not do much, but they’ll at least hold some back. You yourself have your Flamebringer at the ready. “Give the word.”

“Alright…” a tense moment passes, and then- “Move in! Go, go go!”

You hear the engine rev, and you’re quick to launch yourself from the vehicle, rocketing forwards and careening down the hill of your own power. It’s clear the floral beasts noticed you- but it’s also clear they weren’t prepared for your level of savagery.

You’re not the most comfortable with just slicing into them, knowing that they can resurrect, but you don’t exactly have a lot of choice here. The Flambringer is doing a solid job of catching them on fire, at least, but you know you can’t let it get too out of control. You have to cut a path, not exterminate a swarm. A number of the creatures are already reeling back, a good sign. They recognize that you’re a big threat, and even getting close to you is risky. Still, there’s far more than there seemed to be at first glance; vines seem to stream out of the ground and nowhere, and more of the beasts, some looking like gross, mutated humanoid flowers, others looking like meat puppets on vegetated vines, and all of them trying to stop you.

You can hear wheels come up behind you shortly, and shouts as Lia and her people begin to make their move. Bullets are already flying, and more bodies (and other things) drop without your contribution.

Your goal is to get them to the center, and you’d probably be better off making absolutely sure of that, all things considered. So, instead of focusing too much on any given attackers, you instead cleave close to the progressing forces moving down the path, while doing your damndest to cut down any that get too close. Of course, they aren’t entirely helpless themselves, and you can hear bullets flying as several jeeps do their best to dart through the holes you made and get as close to the front as possible before reinforcements come- or the vines that seem to be growing through the ground get much purchase on them.

Three swipes clear out lurching vines, and you glance ahead to see how far afield the greenhouse itself is- it’s a large building, and the surrounding area is pretty wide. Half a football field from the doors, if you had to wager. There’ll be a lot coming after you, but that’s the game, you suppose.

The revving of the tires quickly spurs you to continue on- those things aren’t rated well for offroad, jeep or not you’re pretty sure.

It definitely seems like you were the missing piece to the scenario- you can see how with the masses, and the vines, and regeneration, a normal aggressive force would be waylaid fairly quickly and readily. It’s clear they knew their pros and cons when it came to trying to take this place back. You’re very much the difference maker.

And boy, does it show. With your sword aflame and the creatures realizing that you can kill them for real, their natural instincts are much more fearful and cautious of you- more or less allowing you a beeline straight for what Lia shouts is the entrance- you’re not entirely certain, as it’s all covered in grotesque vines, but they seem sure of it, so there you go. Three more flower beasts try to jump you- and are quickly repelled by gunfire courtesy of Zipper, before being lit aflame by your sword. You’re not given a whole lot of rest, however, as you charge forwards, making sure the vehicles are following in your wake.

It seems like forever, but it’s less than a minute when you find yourself closing in on the presumed entranceway; you turn to see what they’re going to be doing from there on, only to find them rolling out of the vehicles as quickly as possible as they coast to a stop; you hear a ‘clear the doorway, right ahead!’ from Lia, and you quickly turn to do so- the flames from the Flamebringer aren’t any less effective with these, fortunately, and you can almost feel a shiver as they crackle- but to your surprise seem to be snuffed out as the vines THEMSELVES move, slathering themselves on other surfaces to try to pat them out. Clever…but you were accurate after all, it seems. The door is partway unveiled, and you’re quick to cut as best you can through it- without cutting up the doorway itself, at least.

Lia doesn’t seem to be too fussed about THAT much, at least- she motions forwards, and two rather burly sorts you hadn’t see around the church yet barrel forwards, both carrying a large, makeshift battering ram. You can’t help but notice that she, they, and maybe a couple of others have large, lead tanks on their backs, along with what looks like a weed-killer sprayer? If, again, leaden and with a needle on the tip as opposed to a nozzle.

Regardless, it’s no surprise that the door practically caves in after that show of force; as one, the small group of would be warriors dives into the greenhouse, and you follow as well-

-hoo boy.

Whatever this thing is…it’s prettttty likely the source of the takeover. It’s a blood red colored, bulging and pulsing and…it looks like a twisted representation of a tree of sorts…or maybe a vein about to burst. One the width of a redwood, sure, but one nonetheless.

Either way, the one thing that’s clear (and surprising) is that there’s little in the way of defenses, it seems. There’s a few vines slithering forth, but that’s it. “Hit it! Hit it hard!” Lia yells, and they surge forth, you following quick.

There’s little else for it- three more slashes cut down the vines that move to bar you access, and the group led by Lia is quick to take advantage and slip through the opening. It’s a dead sprint towards the thing from here on, and while you can outspeed the vine growth, they can’t. What ends up being the result is you essentially circling around them like some ethereal dancer, moving constantly to intercept and destroy anything that approaches them; the vines burn and fall as the oversized and largely dead normal plants in here make a mess of the surroundings by their sheer presence as the majority are knocked over in your path, be it by blade or bullet from Zipper.

There’s no big fanfare, no grand battle once the core is reached; they all wordlessly stab their implements into the red ‘trunk’ of the thing with ferocity- you swear you could see the thing shudder as they begin to pump liter after liter of sulphuric acid into the thing’s system.

And no surprise, the reaction is almost immediate- you can see the thing going from a vicious red and purple, to a sickly and withering brown as the poison circulates. “Keep pouring it in!” Lia says. “We want to make sure it gets to every corner of this damned thing!” You have to admit, it’s an impressively grisly sight as the vines seem to almost melt- the trunk itself starting to decompose rapidly into an almost goop-like substance; you can see the rest of it spreading throughout the greenhouse as well. “Holy shit,” Zipper swears. “It’s circulation system has to be SPEEDY for it to be dying this fast.” You can’t disagree with her.

By the time all of their tanks are dry, it’s almost like watching rain slough off dirt and mud in some places, such is the dredging that’s taken place here. The few pieces that seemed to not be little more than thick liquids are well snapped off, inert and very obviously unmoving or regenerating. “Go check outside,” Lia says quickly, and you find that’s probably not a bad idea.

Before you get to the door, however, you hear something familiar in your ear: “Can you hear me?” Ah. Izumi. “I got away from them for a little bit; I was about to set up when I saw that the target area seemed to be…decomposing? Are you alright?”

“I’m just fine,” you say with some relief. “Everything went pretty smoothly, so you didn’t need to help out after all. They got the acid into the thing, and it’s all dying. Which means…”

You walk through the opening, to look among the throng of beasts. Already they seem…sickly. Sluggish. Far from the threats they seemed to be at first.

You allow yourself a smirk, not like anyone would see it. “We’ve got some weed-wacking to do.”

A pause on the other end. “...that wasn’t the best one-liner you’ve ever had.”

“Hush, you, and tell them mission accomplished.” You thought it was pretty nice.

(cont.)
>>
>>5250260
It wasn’t too much longer before the rest of the forces arrived- and honestly, your own skills were enough that you’d cleared out a decent size of the floral beasts when they did. Of course, now that they died like anything else, you could simply cut them down, and disposal proper could come later. They’d even started to fear you properly again.

As the rest of Lia’s group begin to form a perimeter, you turn to the newly arriving Izumi amidst a great many body parts, but no threats. “Sorry you didn’t get to do anything this time.”

To your surprise, she shakes her head, looking towards Jessica- why she brought her along is a bit of a mystery, but she seems a good deal better, astonishingly enough. Bright eyes and bushy tailed, almost. “I feel almost…kinda full,” the kid simply says. She wears the scarf well, honestly. It’s a bit big on her, but it looks cute. “Where are we? It…looks strange.”

“It’s a greenhouse,” Izumi explains calmly. “It’s where people are supposed to help plants grow for good purposes.”

She pauses, considering that. “Oh…like flowers?”

Izumi nods. “Yup. Like flowers.”

She looks down; there’s not much there at the moment, just grass. Perhaps a bit burnt, but just grass. “Oh…I like flowers.”

Izumi can only pat her on the head. “So do I. Hopefully, once we’re done here, there’ll be more flowers around.”

“Mmm. I ‘member…there used to be flowers,” she mutters. “They were pretty.” She kneels down, as though seeing one right there in front of her. “I…picked some. They were big…and smelled nice…”

She puts her hands through the charred grass, into the dirt itself. Izumi is about to pull her up, out of her reverie…

But the glow from her body freezes the both of you. “I wish I could see one again…”

The ground burbles a bit. Shifts.

…no.

Nope. No. Not happening.

…but it does. Slowly. A small, simple stem. Nothing big, nothing major at all. You glance at her eyes. Bright. Shining. She doesn’t even seem aware.

…well, fuck. That’s new. A quick glance around tells you no one's near- most focusing on getting things straight around the greenhouse, and clearly not wanting to mess with the 'weird ones'.

You look to Izumi, who seems just as surprised, and caught flatfooted. "Er..."

“Right, then…” You put a hand on her head as well, and that seems to shake her out of her stupor, the light in her eyes dying down. “Good job, I suppose.”

“Hm?” She still doesn’t seem to notice for a moment, before suddenly she refocuses. “...oh. I…wasn’t dreaming?” Her voice is light, airy. Like she’s still not all the way back.

“Nope. We’ll talk about that later, though,” you say quietly, getting her away from all the running around a bit- somewhere you can be in peace for a moment. It’s eventually seen behind a few desiccated trees a bit away from the greenhouse itself.

“What do you think this means?” Izumi asks quietly as Jessica sits there, uncertain.

“Is…something wrong?” she asks lightly.

You shake your head. “Nothing wrong, perse, but something unexpected. Just sit there for a bit while we look you over.”

“Oh…is this like a…doctor visit?” Hm. She’s slowing down a little. Gonna need more food, it seems.

“Not really, but kind of?” Izumi grimaces. “You can play with Pecker in the meantime, can’t you?” Fuck, where DID the bird- “You didn’t even notice it’d fluttered out into our car when we all stopped, did you?” she chastises. “It nearly caught the attention of several people if I hadn’t scooped it up mid-flight.”

“Ah. Sorry about that.” Should probably apologize to Pecker, too. Poor thing’s been really skittish. But sure enough, it’s been hiding out in Izumi’s bonnet. Now, let’s see here…

Huh. A few of the warnings have vanished or changed. “She’s improving, at least.”

“Well, that’s good,” Izumi admits. “But it still doesn’t answer my question? What do you think this means?” She glances off into the distance. “If they figure this out of her, she’ll be either set for life, heralded as a real life mother nature…” And then, she scowls. “Or experimented on until they figure out what makes her tick, or forced to grow things 24/7. I can’t say I like that idea.”

“But something to keep in mind,” you concede as you think about it.

> “Maybe we should just try to convince her to keep it secret. They can figure things out themselves and she can live a normal life.”

Well, you’d be a fool if you couldn’t see where the wind’s blowing in this particular case. “...just say it, Izumi. You want to pluck her out of here and drop her in the Care House, don’t you?”

She has the good grace to blush, as Jessica looks between you both in curiosity and confusion. “Well…you have only yourself to blame for that. I can’t help but be inspired by your own kids. I mean…look at this place. It’s certainly not good for a child to be raised here. Especially one like her.”

That seems to get her attention. “...what’s wrong…with me?”

“Oh, nothing’s WRONG with you, and that’s the thing,” Izumi quickly explains. “It’s just…it’s very clear to us right now that you’re special. In a very good way, and where we are now…well, it doesn’t really seem like it has much in the way to teach you how to use what makes you special. We…we come from a place that does.”

“If for certain reasons,” you quip back. “She’s a kid that’s gone through a lot. I dunno if taking her back home would be the best idea, but...I'll help you out if you really want to do this, y'know? The idea sounds, if nothing else, like it’d get cheers from your own. “Might be a good way to see how well my kids can show someone new around."

There’s a moment of silence as you both consider it, before it’s broken unexpectedly. “Your kids…?” Jessica asks. “Are…you a mom?”

…fuck.

Izumi has to choke back a laugh, and you’re not keen on meeting her eyes with THAT one. “No. But I do have children I…teach, from time to time. They’re…rambunctious sorts. I know at least one would get along swimmingly with you.” Harpsicorie would probably appreciate a fellow quiet girl, you think. It’d be nice to have a bit of evening out…though Noran might start to feel a bit outnumbered in regards to girls to boys. You don’t think he’s at the age yet where that’s appreciated…for a certain definition of the word.

…you’re already talking yourself into it. “I could have…friends again?” Oh. Even you have to frown at that. “That would…be nice.”

“Well. Our home is…different. But you’d be welcomed,” you affirm. “It’s still really up to you, though.”

“Oh…okay.” She goes silent after that. Suppose that’s about it for now. You’ll have to ask her again later.

(cont.)
>>
>>5251326
After a moment of quiet, you decide to return back to the greenhouse proper- it’s clear they’ve well prepared for this moment, at least as much as they could. Lia’s doing some instructing in front of one of them, having apparently left the greenhouse itself in the interim. “Where’ve you been?”

“Nothing to worry about,” you dismiss. “So then. We’ve accomplished it, right?”

She nods, relieved. “Yeah…it’ll need some repair work, but fortunately, the greenhouse seems largely intact, after some cleaning. We’ll be putting this to very good use.” A sigh comes out of her as she looks off in another direction. “You’ve held up your end of the bargain. So we’ll hold up ours.” Looking back to you, there’s still a bit of concern there- but also resolution. “We’ll take you to the labs in an hour or two. Just need to set a few things up here.”

Finally.

—------------------------

The ride over was quiet, but also tense. Notably, it was just Lia, you, Zipper, and Izumi, with Jessica. Who was once again asleep, which was probably for the best.

“The labs aren’t too much further ahead,” she notes after you pass by a factory. “You’ll know when you see it. A big green and white building- and if we’re unlucky, we’re going to have to fight past it. I said it the other day, but Wracked like to try to hit this place a lot for reasons I can’t guess.”

“We’ll be able to handle it,” Zipper dismisses. “Just get us there and make introductions.”

“Right, right…” she simply says. She seems nervous…yeah, no, looking at her aura. Definitely nervous. Not hard to guess the subject, but still.

“What can you tell me of the people running this place?” you ask quietly. “Beyond that what you’ve already said?”

To your slight disappointment, she shakes her head. “Not much. They try to keep to themselves, don’t get out much. Usually it’s lower-level researchers that we make the trades with proper. The big wigs don’t leave their labs- though I DO know a bit about two of them. A Doctor Lumis, and a Doctor Troy. I don’t know if they’re the heads or anything, but I do know they oversee our trades and their transports, from what I’ve heard. That and I think something about quasi-observational whatsits. I’m no scientist,” she complains. “The rest is just rumors and all what we’ve said before.”

Well, that doesn’t tell you much, but frankly you’re just hoping that they don’t get TOO curious about you.

Soon, you see exactly what she’s talking about- a large, white building with a green stripe near the top and bottom. ‘Superbia Hospital’ is in large letters. No doubt the labs are somewhere within the facility. Maybe below it. A number of road blocks and barriers cross the parking lot you’re approaching- and for good reason, you notice as you hear gunfire and see a few Wracked stumbling around.

“Seems like they just got through with a raid,” Lia notes. A pair of bulbous Wracked are trying to charge one of the entrances to the west, but a trio of defenders are laying into it with rifles- wait, one just took out somethin-

-an explosion shakes you in surprise and causes the vehicle to jump a bit; you hadn’t expected THAT, but sure. Makeshift grenades, why not.

“Hold on, they should be expecting us, so let me call them.” She doesn’t have a lot of room to maneuver with the barrel taking up a lot of space in the back, but she managed to get out a walkie, herself. “Attention, attention! This is Lia, Pure Heart Church calling to confirm presence. Over. Again, Lia, Pure Heart Church calling to confirm our presence and requesting invite, over.”

There’s a minute or two of silence as she directs you over to an area that seems less beaten up- a few Wracked are nearby, but it's of little concern to dispatch them. And that’s when you get a response, finally. “Confirmed. Hello, Ms. Lia. We’ll be inviting you in. Please make your way around to the usual pick up spot.”

“Understood,” she says primly. Shutting off the talkie, she points you to what looks like a loading bay with a bit of a dip in it. “Over there. We’re going to be met by security, so don’t panic.”

(cont.)
>>
>>5251580
Sure enough, a near dozen of surprisingly well armored individuals came out of the large bay doorway you’d parked in front of, along with a trio of labcoated individuals. One in particular seemed to lead them- short, only a bit taller than you normally, with messy brown hair and thick glasses, but her posture and position said that she was in charge of things here. One of those auras. “Ms. Lia,” she said clearly, after having looked over all of you- you’re a bit surprised she seemed to show little reaction to your appearance- however, Jessica’s sleeping form most certainly caused her a brief pause. “And these three, which I am to presume are our delivery people?”

“Got it in one,” Zipper pipes up, ignoring the glares from all others present. “Where do we drop this sucker off?”

“I’d ask you to simply drop it here and leave,” she quips right back, “but there’s the pesky matter of ‘payment’, along with one or two other concerns. We will discuss things inside, where it’s safer.” She motions inwards, where there’s another set of guards waiting. “If you would all disembark and follow the security detail, please?”

You glance between Zipper and Izumi, who look back at you with a scowl and a shrug, respectively. “Fine. I’ll carry the barrel.”

“Excellent.”

—-------

You’re led underground via small, but fairly well lit stone corridors. “We at Superbia Laboratories have been laboriously working to find a proper cure to this blight. We’d thought we’d come up with a solution some time back, but it proved to be ineffective in the long term. It lacked stability and long-term effectiveness. Imagine our surprise when an old colleague informs us that he’d crafted an agent that would allow our old creation to remain stable and achieve the results we were after! Serendipitous.” Soon, you hear doors opening- and the hallway gets wider- and a lot whiter. “This will allow us to reform humanity wholesale- provided it does, in fact, work.” You move through a second set of doors, into a large room of some sort. “Set it down here, please.” You do so, and finally manage to get a view of the place as it’s quickly gathered by more researchers onto a hand dolly, and taken out the back. This seems like a general meeting room, if with floodlights. “Now then. First, my thanks for this. Second…” And here her eyes look towards, surprise surprise, Jessica, being carried by Izumi. “It seems that you have an individual who is not entirely subverted yet. I can sympathize.” Her expression isn’t a sympathetic one, if you had to say so. “If you allow us to take care of her, we’ll see that the solution is properly synthesized, and she’s returned to you in perfect health.”

Hm. Regardless of what she wants to do, you doubt she could outmatch the Intersection’s doctors. “It’s unnecessary. I’ll be taking care of her.”

She makes a face you’re not sure how to describe. It lasts for barely a second, however, before her prior neutral expression reasserts itself. “That is…understandable, for a being of your make, no doubt, but considering this girl is originally human, I hope you understand that there might be…health concerns. We would be making sure that she’s not unduly suffering, and work to see her in perfect-”

“-health, yes,” you finish for her. You DO recall the rumors about them…maybe it wouldn’t hurt to poke at her a bit. “What do you mean by perfect health?”

Even as she’s talking, you’re peering into her. She’s got a strangely greenish-grey haze around her, all things considered. Neutral? …ambitious, maybe. Leaking through. As she continues on about ‘optimum reaction time’ and ‘healthy circulation’, you look for a bit of insight.

She’s ever so desperate. She believes that she’s so close to accomplishing her goal. She’ll be revered. She wants what she thinks you have. What she thinks Jessica can have. She’ll sacrifice a great deal to get it. She believes it’ll be worth it, in the end.

…hm. “And if I still refuse?”

A pause. No, more like a freeze. Like her body goes stone still. And then- “Well, that’s…disappointing. But in the meantime, perhaps you would like a brief tour of the facilities?”

“Well, really, we’re just here to get paid and leave.” Zipper speaks up.

The squint on the lady’s face is almost missed- honestly, you’re a bit surprised at that, even with what you just learned- but again, it passes quickly, an eyeblink. “Well. I can understand that. But collecting the fee takes time. So why not spend it looking around?”

You catch Izumi out of the corner of your eye looking at her meticulously. Don’t need insight to see she’s not too impressed with the lady. Lia seems generally cautious- her pursed lips haven’t moved since getting out of the car.

Y’ know, this might be the the sleeping pills I’ve taken, but this lady make me think of an inverse Cylica. Cylica was famous in her world for leading her country to a near victory over her belief that the use of (admittedly unstable) crystal magic shouldn’t be abolished, but was willing to trade it all for the chance to expand her opportunities and skills beyond what she could do there. Meanwhile what I’m getting from this lady is that she wants to become recognized all over this world for what she thinks she’s contributing, and that she’d rather stay in this small pond if it means the chance that she’d get to be the biggest fish in it.
>>
>>5251705
Honestly, you’re not all that interested. “There is nothing here that would interest me, nor my superiors. Anything you have to offer is irrelevant."

She seems to blanch at that, and you hear a small ‘heh’ out of Zipper. “A-are you sure about that? I mean, the situation, though a bit concerning to say the least, HAS resulted in a number of impressive-”

“Again, uninterested,” you insist. “However, if you wish to hire any help for additional courier work, you can ask our associate for her employer's contact information.” With that you wave towards Zipper, who seems a bit surprised at being put on the spot, but simply shrugs.

“Y-yeah, I guess sure? I mean, all things considered there’s a process an’ shit, but I’m pretty sure if-” she starts, but to your surprise, she’s interrupted.

“N-no! I mean I know if we can maybe have a bit of discussion, we can…perhaps inspire you, or maybe you inspire us, who knows?” Huh. Getting nervous now? Wonder why.

“The offer is the offer. Take it or not,” you affirm. You’d rather not play around now. “I know what you truly desire.” You can see her jump at that, and Lia looking at you curiously. “This is your best option.”

“I…alright. I-I guess.” Finally. She backed down. “Just, er…let me go see about that payment, right?” She scurries out quickly, followed by a couple of guards, and you wonder if you should’ve stopped her or not.

“Well…that’s unexpected,” Lia finally speaks. “I didn’t think you really were just here for a delivery. I don’t know what’s in that barrel, but…I hope it really IS a cure for this.” She sighs. “I’m going to need to talk with them about the future now that we have the greenhouse. I should probably start thinking on what to say…” She muses, and the guards seem a bit perturbed, but you’re not going to answer any of THEIR questions. "If I HAVE to be under watch, then maybe one of you men could accompany me outside?"

There's some mumbling- but two agree to follow her, leaving two here with you. They don't seem happy about it.

She seems like a straight shooter, and I have no doubt that this place’ll need more jobs to get it settled back in place, so leave a Sal coin with her.
Also, tell Zipper payment shenanigans might be occurring, so she should inform her bosses about possible issues.

Jokes aside, I think we can puff up the deal concerning Zipper a bit more. She wants magic, and it would be foolish of her to pass up the chance to trade with a dimension brimming with it. No, what you want to do is something else. Gartoum should be interested in seeing just what that doctor’s deal really is; especially because YOU are, too. Problem being, you’re going to need to distract the guards- no doubt if they see him coming from you, they’re going to ask questions- or just start shooting, either or, really. The room, at least, has seats, a table, and a chalkboard, but that’s really kind of it.

You don’t have much availability in the way of getting them distracted, but you at least manage to make eye contact with the both of the guards- that’s enough to get them to look away momentarily. They might not see your eyes, but they can tell when someone’s looking at them. That’s enough for you to glance towards Izumi, at least- she doesn’t need much in the way of movement for you to tell her to distract them for a few seconds.

“Excuse me, you two,” she starts. “May I ask about the situation at hand regarding the greenhouse to the east?”

“That place?” The guards seem appreciative of getting their attention refocused anywhere but you- and all you need is a moment they aren’t looking to subvocalize Gartoum coming out of your shadow, as you point to the doorway. I hope you can follow that doctor that just went through there. Short, brown hair, thick glasses. Lemme know what she says about us and where she goes. QUIETLY.”

‘On it!’ He mentally confirms- and you see a slip of him duck under the table, and from there you can’t see him- though the shadows near the door wobble ever so slightly.

Phew. That was more mentally taxing than you expected, being honest. But now you’ve got something else to focus on. “If you gentlemen will be discussing things with her, I will be outside speaking to Miss Lia,” you announce formally- and to your surprise, they don’t argue the point, almost jerkily stepping aside as you pointedly walk between them.

You notice one of them leans out of the doorway, as though to keep an eye on you as you retreat- but it’s not much longer before he’s out of sight. Before much longer, you can see outside, the guards nearby, but giving her a decent amount of space. They seem surprised at your appearance, but at a wave of Lia’s hand, they stand down. She’s leaning against a wall a bit of a ways away, eyes downcast.

Well…whatever you’re here to say…should probably say it.

Considering your ‘persona’ here, you might want to phrase this particularly…"A minor representation of monetary value useful for trading goods and services for your thoughts."

There’s a pause as she digests that, looking blankly at you in sheer confusion. For a moment you’re thinking you’re going to have to reword that, before she shakes her head in understanding. “Oh, right. You, uh…got close.”

“Did I?” You know you did, but might as well feed into it. From what you can read of her, her emotions are…not settled, not nervous, but rather…deeply confused. She’s not sure what she should be feeling. Part of her feels like a blasphemer for the first time. Another feels just a bit hopeful this might all be ending, like a nightmare she’ll finally be waking up from. A third part of her wants to think this is all a lie so she has an excuse to go back to what she’s gotten used to as ‘normal’.

Ignorant to all of this, she speaks. “Well, it’s not much, really. If this ‘cure’ really works, then we’ll have a lot of work ahead of us. Obviously, what we have there won’t cut it for how much we need.” She sighs, considering the work ahead. “We’ll need to worry about fabrication, distribution, transportation and everything…and really, that’s just the start. And again, IF it works at all. Honestly,” she admits, “I was happy just getting the greenhouse. I didn’t have much faith in a lot else.”

Well, points for thinking ahead, you’ll say that much. "While I cannot give you much in the way of reaffirmation of your faith, I can at least offer you my respect, as well as a means to summon us for help, should you need it."

THAT causes her to blanch, looking away. “That seems…concerning.”

“It is not,” you assure. “If perhaps you find that distasteful, the offer for my associate's courier work is also on the table.”

“I…” she blinks, looking down. “I have a hard time believing that for all the creepy, otherworldliness that is you, you’re just…a delivery girl. Woman. Thing.” She shakes her head again. “You know what I mean.”

“Yes, and that hunch would be correct.” She looks back at you, surprised. “I do much more than delivering objects. This is simply what I was contracted for in this instance.”

“...Ah.” she looks away again. “And I take it the price is…”

“Exorbitant.” No reason to pretend otherwise. “But the results are, essentially, guaranteed. No matter the situation.”

>you’re just…a delivery girl. Woman. Thing.”
i think its the first time in the whole quest that we're called a woman.
>>
>>5258720
“I see…” she pauses. “While that’s good to know, I…don’t know if we can exactly afford that. I’m surprised they could. Actually…” she frowns. “No, I don’t. If they’ve stumbled upon some sort of massive cache of money or rare metals or something, that wouldn’t surprise me. They tend to be…secretive.”

"Sensible,” you decide. “Speaking of secrets, however. I will grant you this knowledge. It concerns this disease you concern yourselves with.”

“Wait, you know about it?!” she says half yelling. The soldiers look over, but apparently she didn’t say it loud enough for them to properly hear- they aren’t reacting otherwise. “Why didn’t you-”

“It was unimportant. However, there is spare time, and we will be paid shortly. There is no reason to reduce the chance of repeat business,” you excuse easily. “Regardless, you should know that this disease is not manmade. And it is only natural in a matter of speaking. I would suggest looking into the legends and myths of the old days, as I am fairly confident that all of this is magical in nature." You’d been wondering why or how magic left this world, but it’s not really your concern otherwise.

That’s an honest surprise to HER, though. “M-magic? You’re…you’re not kidding.” A pause, and then she groans. “Of COURSE it’s magic, isn’t it. The one thing we’ve got no clue about anymore…except maybe you and a few others. No WONDER you showed up here.”

You’re kind of surprised, considering you were slinging around magic when you first met. It never registered to her that the issues were connected, maybe?

Keep it. I don't know how we'll get it up to full power, but chances are Grizzi might have an idea, as well as Jessica once we start teaching the kids knife and sword safety.

Actually, we should start training the kids in swords and knives soon, especially since it'll be extremely likely that they'll pick up a magic one on a fantasy world job eventually. Pretty sure Harpsi would make a good dual scimitar dervish, and Noran'll grow into a two handed melee type.

“There’s MORE?” she goggles.

You nod. "If you keep an eye out and an ear open, I'm sure you'll be able to find those similar in nature to my ward. They will likely be your best bet for understanding magic and the old ways. Just make sure your allies and wards don't mistreat them, and that you have enough food to sustain their abilities."

She snorts at that. “If anyone eats like that kid, I’m not sure the rest of humanity will survive, but sure, thanks.”

“You need not believe me, if you don’t care to. There was an old musician in Taxson. He might give you more insight in this particular matter, provided you survive assisting him with his cup. Be forewarned about that,” you offer. Stupid creepy old man.

That’s another surprise for her. “Taxson? There’s someone like that in Taxson? I heard that place was entirely blown out…” she says, drifting off. Guess it makes sense- certainly didn’t really SEEM like anyone could live there when you passed through. “I see, though…” she mulls on this as you get up, preparing to head back inside. “Thank you for this. I’ll see what I can do with this information.”

“Good. Also, you might want to know that your wards were discussing sneaking out last night. You should probably double check your security when you get back." And with that, and a last yell of ‘hey!’, you leave her to her thoughts. She doesn’t seem too eager to follow you, after all.

Now, you just need to-

“Ohoooo!” Speak of the devil. Gartoum mentally transmits to you. “Your scientist friend is in QUITE a tizzy. She’s been panicking trying to find an incentive to make you stick around, or at the very least allow a blood sample. Even aside from that, it seems that while they have a rather LARGE pile of silver bars, they’re throwing out accusations- oh. One of them pulled out what I’m FAIRLY sure is an effigy doll. Those are always fun!” Lovely. “Allllso I’m seeing some rather interesting not-humans in iron boxes. Not quite like the little lady, though! More like if they rather bubbled up under the skin. Much less put together.”

Well.

Well, well. That seems interesting. Futile on their part, but interesting. “This sounds like a way to squeeze them for a bit more money. Keep at it.” You don’t know what the score is, but if you can get some extra out of them, you’d be more than happy to prey on a few hopes and fears.

“Oh, sure thing!” the shadow reports, and then silence again.

The trip back is uneventful, and you get back to seeing Zipper and Izumi sitting down- Zipper looks incredibly bored, while the guards only notice you getting back now. Jessica is on Izumi’s lap, holding Pecker once more, who is very still- you’re not sure if they’re keeping incognito or just lazy, but you’re not complaining. They shift a touch, but otherwise show no signs of moving. “Ugh,” Zipper complains. “When are we gonna get our money!? That’s literally all we want here and then we can fuckin’ GO.” Well, can’t deny that.

Izumi delivers a half-hearted glare. “Now now, we really shouldn’t-”

“Sorry!” Suddenly the nurse, looking far less put together than she did before, bursts through the door, glasses a bit askew, but immediately locking onto you. “Sorry, had a few things to straight up, a few questions to ask, issues to resolve! However! I, one, have your payment as our good colleague indicated, but I also- also! Have something that may well be of interest to you! Maybe.”

Oh? “And that would be?”

“Well- it’s, that is. It’s a little thing we’d been working on, not really applicable to the current situation for, well, classified reasons, but it’s something we developed that maybe YOU would find useful!” And she brings out a flask of…something. It’s greyish-black, and seems a bit thick. “This here is a little thing we call- well, some of them wanted to just call it ‘Chemical X’, but we eventually decided on ‘Ambrosia’. It’s an oral ingestant that, well, I’ll spare you the technical explanation. Suffice to say drinking even an ounce or two will, theoretically, sustain your energy for days at a time! It’s like drinking a full course meal! Or at least, that’s the intention.”

(cont.)
>>
>>5259062
“...wait, how’s THAT not useful or applicable right now?” Zipper asks quickly. “That sounds REALLY friggen useful.”

“Welllll, it’s…got a few side effects,” she admits. “Namely a bit of increasing density and a few, well, semi-toxicity issues. Only slight, though! And it’s only for humans- I’m sure something of your make, or perhaps your young ward’s, would be able to ingest this without issue!” Boy, that sounds suspect. “And in exchange for this, all we’re asking for is- well, nothing much, maybe a little blood sample here, tissue sample there-”

“Whoa, whoa whoa, are you crazy?!” Zipper shoots up, startling all others in the room. “You’re just ASKING for her to fork over some blood?”

“Well- I mean, we could use it to identify pathogens unique to the species for future study!” she quickly tries to explain. “After things settle down there’ll be quite the opening of fields of study! Why not get a headstart on it!?”

> (Intimidation)...Enough. Give us the money and we will leave, or else I will consider this a refusal to pay.

Well. Not exactly what you were hoping for, but maybe you can wheedle something else out of them. Of course, it seems like you’re definitely going to need to put forth something of similar value. With that in mind, you pull out an empty mana crystal and start filling it, letting the energy flow into it slowly.

“Ehhhh?” Izumi and Zipper both seem confused at what you’re doing. Jessica seems enamored.

The guards are astonished, and you see them begin to raise their guns…only to be waived off by the scientist herself as her eyes are stuck on the the crystal. “...what on earth…?”

It’s pretty useless for your own purposes right now, but it’s a hell of a visual for her. Now…

Time to really get into character. Ahem.

“And what of this, instead?” you offer. Izumi goggles, and Zipper looks like she wants to ask a question, but doesn’t even dare. "Can you feel it, mortal? Powers long forgotten."

“What…kind of?” The owlish blinking is pretty funny.

"Something at the moment that is beyond your comprehension. What you're looking at is naught but a droplet, a seed. One that, perhaps, you may even be able to cultivate yourself, should you look to the past, for the sake of the future. But it is all you need to kickstart an age of wonders, with you at the foundation- though you may not live to see it, as many great founders so end up." Almost EVERYONE is looking at you in shock, surprise, or just plain confusion. You kinda get it. But seriously, you can have a LITTLE fun, right? Well, you don’t know if you can really trade the crystal like that, but…well, Sal hasn’t said anything yet, knock on wood. "And yet for that immediate chance, you must offer much, much more in exchange."

“I…that is…uh…” She seems to have frozen entirely regarding this offer. It’s just then that you see someone else come in through the door- and they’re wheeling a small pallet of over two dozen silver bars, at a glance. Your payment. “Oh, here we are, but…” she flips between it and your offer.

“Can you?” you ask, leaning forwards slightly. Hopefully Zipper and Izumi are prepared for this, if it all goes south.

“I- well, I…I…I…” she’s hyperventilating now- what happened to the stern put together scientist you JUST saw? She cracked awful easily- whoop, nope, there she goes, falling falling-

You stop her from collapsing on top of the silver. “I will take that as a no,” you mutter as the two soldiers rush to grab her from you. You quietly hand her over- they grab her rather quickly- and you’re more focused on getting the payment out. “Shall we be off, then?”

“Finally!” Zipper mutters, and Izumi merely cradles Jessica close as they get up, who seems to be looking at the lady with curiosity.

“What…happened?” she asks.

You just shrug. “Nothing to worry about. Are we ready?” You turn to Zipper. She's probably the go to.

"Absolutely. Already informed that we got four for pickup." She pulls out a small...beeper? Thing, and presses a button. "And extraction in three, two...."

"Mouth closed, Jessica. This is just your first minute here,” you warn her. “There’ll be a lot more to see. But first…” you turn to Zipper. "I think it's high time we get some food for her. And us, frankly.” You could do with something decent. “We’ll pick something up and get her home.”

“Alright, alright,” she says easily. “Well, it was a trip, for sure. See ya in the funnies.”

“Right. I'll send you a message whenever we have our movie night. You can come and razz on them with us,” you offer.

That actually gives her pause as she’s walking away, forcing two others to weave around her. “No shit?”

You nod. “Told you, you’re cool with me. I should be able to find you in the directory, right?”

She looks around. “Uh…yeah. Guess you girls are easy to find, huh?”

“Yeah. Silver Eye Solutions. Shouldn’t be hard. Lemme know sooner than later, alright?” She nods, and with that, you head off.

The trip to the nearest convenience store is…well, the kid’s found her energy. For a place that numbs excess mana, it’s surprising. She’s not bouncing everywhere, but she’s got her head on a swivel, and she’s looking at everything with absolute wonder. “Yeah, that’s about expected.” Even the store seems to fill her with wonder- nevermind the octopus headed kid in headphones you passed. That’s a LOT of shrimp, yikes.

Although…maybe something in small masses isn’t a bad idea. Part of you had just assumed ‘steak’ or something like that, maybe ribeye roast…hm.

Maybe both? Probably both. It’s a bit of an expense, but- wait, no, discount. Damn, that’s helpful.

Jessica still seems gobsmacked, not having said anything, but amazed almost to the point of shock. “It’s a big change, isn’t it?” You say as Izumi keeps a close hand on her. She’s at least walking, now.

She nods. But to your surprise, she finally musters up enough to ask a question. “Where’s the other lady?

“Oh. That was me in costume,” you explain. You expect to have to give more details, but to your surprise, she just says ‘oh’, and doesn’t seem to question it. Well, you won’t press the issue.

When you get home, Izumi insists you head into HER house- it was her job, you suppose. Although you’re going to keep the majority of this food, you don’t mind using her kitchen for it, that’s for sure. Jessica’s wandering around the apartment oohing and aahing at everything while you do prep work on the meat.

After a few moments, you hear the water running in the bathroom. Guess she’s getting a bath after all. You remain focused on the spices for the time being and making sure the oven’s properly pre-heated.

You’ve just finished putting the first in when you hear footsteps. “She’s been in love with the place so far,” Izumi says from behind you. “She thinks we’re fairies or something and we just whisked her away to Fairy Land.” You have to bark out a laugh at that one as she helps set the table.

“Well, I don’t think she’ll be thinking that for very long once she starts classes in the Care House,” you mention as you start on the sides- simple stuff for the kid. Green beans and the sort. Should be easy enough to get her on. “They’ll knock that fantasy right outta her.”

Izumi huffs lightly in annoyance, but doesn’t disagree. “I hope she’ll at least be able to make some friends. Your little quartet should be a good start, if they’re willing.”

“Decently sure they will be,” you note. “Kinda like we said earlier. Really, right now what I’m wondering about is getting her fixed up. FutureSight kept saying surgery, right? She seems like she’s improving on her own, but I’d rather end that worry altogether.”

Izumi nods, considering. “Right…we’ll need to visit a hospital prepped for that kind of care.” She frowns, the idea really settling in for her. “Honestly, I’m not used to hospital visits anymore. We usually just heal ourselves.”

“I know, right?” you agree, letting out a short laugh. “Strange, really.” Standard medical services were plentiful in the Intersection, after all- healers and quick healing tools weren’t lacking, per se, but there was a bit of a rationing for less vital injuries- for both safety and practicality reasons. A few cuts and scrapes? That meant you generally had to take the slow path to getting better. “But, for her, probably needed to be safe. Might cost a bit, but should be worth it.”

“I’ll have enough,” Izumi assures. “I’ve been trying to save up a bit just in case.”

“Are you going to register her under your name as guardian/dependant, or what?” you ask. “Care House could take her as a ward for a couple years or until she graduates, could just let her decide.”

Izumi blinks, as though it hadn’t really occurred to her. “I…hm.” Ah. Guess it hadn’t. “I suppose the good thing would be to take her under my charge, but…”

“But…?” you press. You can kinda guess, though.

She frowns, unable to meet your eyes as something in her brain settles. “I suppose I’m just now comprehending the enormity of such a responsibility.”

“Well, like I said, if you’re not sure, register her and have them take responsibility.” Of course, that came with its own caveats, but…not much different than what they’d be doing anyway.

“Right…I could ask Julius how he feels…” she demurred.

It takes you a couple moments to remember who that was. “Damn, you’re still seeing him?”

“ANYWAY,” she continues loudly. “I’m sure Lorelei and the others will want to meet her, too. But AFTER she’s a bit more settled in.” That’s fair.

I forget, does Julius know what she does for a living? It’s been a while since he first came up in the story.

You talk for a few more minutes, mostly about the expected surgeries Jessica will need; shouldn’t take too long. She’ll likely be liable for healing, provided her constitution permits it- you’re still not 100% sure if she’s some undead variant or what.

When there’s only a bit left to go on the meat cooking, Izumi goes to fetch Jessica from her bath, however- and wow, she looks a LOT healthier, even in an oversized t-shirt. Her skin’s a much less dirty greyish and almost seems purple, and her veins are…well, they’re less glowy, but more clear, if that makes sense.

…still looks too thin, in your opinion. Well, that’s what the three course meal is for. Had to make due with frozen bread rolls, but those’ll be more than fine for her.

You allow yourself a bit of food while mostly watching Jessica virtually vacuum everything down. At first Izumi had to tell her several times that ‘no, there’s plenty enough for you to eat as much as you like’, and then had to tell her to slow down. But, she’s clearly enjoying it.

In the meantime, you check your local messages, and…huh.

It's a non-profit organization - it's certainly not one of the MOST important facilities.
>>
>>5267556
I think it’s more likely that they’ve got connections to a few local hospitals to take care of any major specialized health issues that come up. After all, performing life saving surgeries on magical orphans has to be a major PR boon to any hospital looking to get its name on peoples minds, especially since they’re unlikely to be able to go out on medical missions in other worlds.

You’re long past due to contacting Lunaluna and seeing what’s going on with her. You’re going to leave- but Jessica gives you a sad look just as Izumi motions for you to hold on a bit. Actually, thinking about it, you suppose it’d be a good idea to keep her looped in on this… “Sorry, I was just going to see about our…issue. With Ms. Grace?” you hint. Better to not let Jessica get too much information.

“Ah, right,” Izumi says, pausing. “Well, getting into THAT issue, I think that’s not as big of a task as you might think…”

You raise an eyebrow. “And…what makes you say that?”

“Well, remember when she surprised me when I was trying to get her autograph? I don’t think I ever told you what she DID give me…” She looks away. “Suffice to say I can let her know you want to meet- at least temporarily.” What. “She implored me to not mention any more than that, though. It’s just my suppositions, but…I think she wants to test you.”

You’re…honestly a bit caught off guard. “What makes you say that?”

She shrugs. “Hunch. Now that I’m recalling, she almost seemed…playful? No, maybe ‘intrigued’ might be a better word.”

…huh. Well. That makes things a bit more concerning. Still… “Alright, then. Can you at least inform her about-”

“No, no, I can just tell her you want to meet. Like a signal. She’ll contact YOU otherwise,” she elaborates. Jessica just looks between you both, confused. When you meet her eyes, you just pat her on the head- though she seems less agreeable about that now, judging by the frown. Something to note. “Sorry, dear, just some grownup things,” she explains to the girl, before leading her away a bit. “How about you talk with Miranda for a bit while I do something for her, okay?” She gets up from the table, and Jessica looks to you, cheeks still bulging with food, before she swallows.

“...Mmm. How come you changed faces?” she asks. Yeah, she absolutely sounds and looks much better already. “And how come you look smaller? And how come this place looks so different? Miz Iz-sume, she- she said it wasn’t a fairy land, but it’s kinda scary but it’s amazing!”

…huh. Chatterbox when she’s got a full stomach for once. Or it might just be sensory overload. Okay, deep breaths, Miranda. Got a bit of time, you guess.

“Well, first of all, how’re you feeling?” you ask. Might as well just check to make sure, even though you’re certain Izumi’s asked as well.

“Mnnnn…I feel better now,” she says. “I like the food. I felt stuffy a’ first. An’ then you came an’ helped me, an’ I stopped feelin’ as stuffy an’ tired. An’ now I’m okay. I think.” She pauses, thinking for a moment, and then she frowns, looking…elsewhere. For a moment, she looks…haunted. About to cry.

“Jessica?” You’re hesitant to put a hand on her, even in reassurance. “You there? I was going to say that dressing up was part of my job.”

She blinks, and looks up. “It is?”

“Yup. Like how I delivered a thing to the scientists. I do a lot of things like that,” you explain. “But, when I’m not working, I look like this. And there’s a lot to do around here, too.” From there, you go into an explanation of a few things she could likely do. There’s more than a few kid-approved playplaces, arcades, and things to do. “...especially if you have some friends. I’ve got some kids I’m mentoring that I’m sure would like to meet you.”

“...oh yeah. You said there would be friends!” Ah, that’s gotten her in a better mood now. “Can I meet ‘em?”

“Sure. But they’re in school right now,” you note. She seems disappointed in that, but… “You can go to the same place, if you want.”

“...I can? I…didn’t go to school for long,” she says quietly. “When…the bad stuff happened. I stopped.”

“Oh? How long did you go?” you hazard. “You don’t need to tell me if it’s too sad.”

“Uhh…” she doesn’t seem to avoid it, at least. “I went…uhhh…one, two, three…fours…” she taps her fingers. “I think…four times?”

“Years?” you confirm, to which she nods. “Huh.

“And then I learned stuff at home.” Ah. Home schooling.

It’s then that Izumi returns. Took her a while. “Back. I confirmed she’s gotten the alert. She’ll get in touch with you shortly enough.” Right, then-

A buzz from your phone. That fast? You check it, and…an unknown number, along with ‘The Care House, first floor, please. At 3. Talk from there.’ That’s not long.

…Ah. Well, then.

“Well,” you start as you put the phone away without speaking of the subject, “we WERE talking about getting her enrolled. You wanna go and do that now?” It’s clear Jessica has no clue what’s happening, while Izumi seems to consider it.

“Right this moment, hm?” Izumi raises an eyebrow, though she doesn’t look all that surprised. “Why the change of heart?”

“What change of heart?” you ask. It’s more for her sake than anything else.

“We said we were going to get her a checkup, right? Maybe more?” she hints. Fair enough, but still.

“We can do that after we get her registered,” you suggest.

“What’s happening?” Jessica asks, as innocent as you can be.

You just admit a chuckle. “How’d you like to go back to school? And with people just as interesting as you?”

Her look said everything you needed to know.

Now then, where’s Pecker? He should appreciate getting some time to- ah, there he is. Sometimes you forget your head’s weight isn’t that much. The bird at least seems active now, and you give him a few strokes to keep him comfortable.

Right, where we you…?
—----------------------

Later, you’re at the Care House with Izumi, and the receptionist currently on duty is busy registering little Jessica as a ward of the House, while Izumi considers her options and is listed as a primary contact’. Jessica, as usual, is overawed at the place. “We’ll have to do a few tests to see just what her biological, dietary, and other needs may be, but we thank you for providing yet another valuable individual to the future of the Intersection.”

Right. Now, you’ll let Izumi handle that part. You just need to wait for Ms. Grace. You can see a number of kids come and go around the lobby here, and it makes you wonder where your kids are. You wonder if they’re in classes or not right now. It’s about 10 minutes till, and- “Hello?” Huh. That was quiet, and you turn to Miss Grace…at least, you’re fairly sure. Has a hoodie(?) on that hides hair, and the rest of her is much in line with how casual she is. “It’s good to see you understood the message. With that, she grabs you and leads you towards a small, corner seat in the lobby.“You’re pretty sure at least the receptionist would be gobsmacked, but she’s still talking. “So then? All I ask is that you don’t ask about the chip I gave you I left.”

“Fair enough,” you agree. “What are the basics of what you’ve learned?”

“They’re not working alone, obviously,” She starts quietly. “It’s a group, and they might not like how things are done right now. They clearly have a Deal-Maker’s ear, too.”

And honestly? I absolutely hate sets like that or those that make us fit in just too well but don't have Intimidation high enough for us to be taken seriously - like the one we wore for the post-apoc mecha job. Seems like if we go with anything below (B-) and clients start questioning our competence and abilities - leading to annoying stuff like testing our skills (happened in Mafia job and Lori's solo mission) or get funny ideas about payment (like in the Mecha and Wild West missions).
>>
>>5270693
True, but we're mostly on missions that are rather serious. Perhaps when we finally have a job with the kids there'll be a mission where plainness or humor would work better.

Although it would be pretty funny to have the kids go to a bright happy fun mission with them looking like adorable JRPG adventurers and us looking like some sort of evil conquering overlord. We just loom in the backround while they handle the Dragon Quest-esque minions, all the while the minions pretend to be defeated so they don't have to deal with us absolutely murdering them for hurting our students.
>>
>>5270693
to be fair, in the mecha world the megacorp was trying to do megacorp shit; if we had gotten a higher intimidation stat the whole quest would have gone VERY differently. same for the wild west quest; they guy was trying to haggle the payment and we called his bluff
>>
>>5270732
Just my personal preference - sets that kinda fit the setting but have high enough Intimidation (like the last two exapmles from picrelated>>5270693) seem to work better and cause less problems imo. We're more noticeable and people clam up quicker when we question them, but that beats having to deal with stupid schemes of opportunistic clients or proving ourselves for each time the job starts.
>>
>>5270710

something like that did happen in Mono's 'solo' job iirc.

eh, but thats only happened twice so far, and it wasn't in a row even. mr. shade-evil overlord paid up immediately after he got freed and the same happened in all the other missions we've done
>>
>>5270898
I wouldn't really count it, as the people we were working for were cultists for some dark god, and the monsters in the maze were properly monstrous. I'm talking about taking a job somewhere that looks like it'd belong in a cartoon series for kids 8-10, all colorful and with a tagline about how being friends is the best thing ever. There'd probably some sort of noble in charge (chances are high they'd be a princess), and the bad guy is doing evil because either he's a misunderstood jerkass or is trying to get "power" or "magic" or something nebulous like that.

Y'know, THAT kind of job.

>mr. shade-evil overlord paid up immediately
like I've said, we don't have that kind of problems when we go with high Intimidation.

There’s a number of questions that come from that statement. “What exactly do they not like about the way things are done?” you ask as quietly as possible.

“I’m not sure right now,” she admits. “Something about how Outgoers are arranged, but that’s as far as I’m aware. Honestly, I could see it as simply being general discontent, but…apparently moves are being made.”

“There was a threat assessment on paper we uncovered,” you mention. As you expected, her eyebrows raise at the mention of paper. “Yeah, exactly. At least, we think it’s an assessment. Several groups ranked. Some group called the ‘Progenitors’ were on it. Ring any bells?” you glance back- Izumi’s still answering questions.

Ms. Grace frowns. “Hm. No, I can’t say that I have. Strange. I’ll look further into it.”

“Damn,” you swear. “I've heard a rumor about a group of white-haired individuals making waves and was hoping they were connected.”

“I’ll keep an ear out, I promise,” she assured. “But I’m impressed you’ve managed to dig up so much.” She looks like she means it.

“Trust me, that’s not all. What about the Red-Talon Group? Heard of them?”

That gives her a bit of a surprise. “Oh, those? Yes, but…I would be surprised if they were part of any conspiracy. They’re a loose organization of hunters, and general food gatherers. Well, WERE, at least,” she corrects. “I’ve interacted with members here and there before, but they tended to be proud of what they did, which I respect. They’d transitioned to Outgoer work proper not too long ago, last I heard. I supposed they managed to impress someone and got taken on.”

Huh. That’s a bit of a wrinkle. “Hm. Well, I asked because…well, more news. There's something very sketchy going on with a place in the Eatery District called 'Jiro's Divine Palace'.

Another spark of recognition. “Ah. I’ve been there- well, in a private room. The food’s decent.”

“Well, a couple of people from the list that we've uncovered seemed to try to investigate the place themselves as well,” you mention. “I’m not sure how serious this is or how many we should try to involve.”

“As few as possible for now,” she answers strictly. “We don’t want a mess coming out and getting the wrong sorts of attention. Again, I’m impressed you’ve done so much, though that you have also concerns me. I will ask you to take a step back for a while now, though. I’ve got a few contacts I could talk to, and I have a few more moves I could make than you, no offense meant.”

>>5276951
“None taken. Though…if you’re talking about making moves, I've got a contact number of an Authorized Investigator, but it's going to run out soon. What should I do about it?”

“Do NOT use it blatantly on this!” she hisses. “Investigators, even for one-time situations or pro bono cases, need to report what they look into, no matter what they might say. If these people are entrenched in any way, they’ll hear about it.” Ah. Well, damn. “Look, if I were to recommend something? Focus on that chip for now. I’ll deal with this for the time being.”

“Are you two done there?” Izumi asks from behind you. Jessica’s been handed a backpack from the receptionist- guess things are done there, and right now she’s talking about it to her. The girl seems…well, confused, but is nodding anyway.

“I’m afraid we more or less are,” Grace answers for you. “I don’t have a lot of time to spare, sadly.” She seems sincere about that, at least.

“Right, well. That’s fine. I’ve got a couple things to do anyway, but I think I’ve got a picture of the list somewhere. I’ll forwards it to you, if possible,” you insist.

“...that might be doable, yes. I suspect we’ll meet again sooner or later,” she decides as she moves to leave.

“Oh, one more thing. I’ve already heads upped the Coven- or I guess Guild of Shadows now- and the Knights Resplendent. They were on the list, and we knew them prior, so…” you trail off, the implication obvious.

She sighs, but nods. “Good to know. I’ll have to be careful, then. See you around!” And with that, she leaves. The receptionist doesn’t seem to say a thing- if she overheard anything, hopefully she’ll keep silent.

With that, it’s just you, Izumi and the kid now. “C’mon, then. Everything’s set?” you ask.

“It is,” Izumi confirms. “She’s got her first day supplies, and that’ll happen in a week. In the meantime, they’ve assigned her to her dorm, and due to her situation, she’ll be placed in a group room with two others and a temporary guide.” Right. Most kids here…well, they’re independent enough for one reason or another. Some, though? Not so much, and so the Guides happen.

“This might be about it, then. Ah, though that reminds me, before anything else.” Lesse, you should still have it here…ah!

You take out the music box. It’d calmed her down and cleared her head more than once already. And by how she’s looking at it, she seems to recognize such. “I think this’ll be alright in your hands now. Just keep it safe, and I guess if you’re ever feeling glum or anything, you don’t be afraid to play this, alright?”

She’s still staring at it as she takes it, but nods. “Mhm…thank you.”

“Not a problem,” you dismiss before turning to Izumi. “Anywho, we’re walking her to it, then? Might as well give her a quickie tour. Or at least run past one of the big spots so she has a frame of reference.”

“Oh. That’d be nice of you!” Izumi agrees, and so off the three of you go.

You start to think as you begin walking. “Let’s see…there’s plenty to see, and I can’t stick around forever, but we could hit up the…”

“My goodness,” Izumi starts as you arrive at the bark and moss covered entranceway. “So this is the Atrium?”

“Yup,” you say. “This is where all the leafy folk and plant lovers hang out. Oh, and folks more into their animal sides.” Almost as though to respond to it, a fluttering, kinda chubby, parrot-beaked child that careened out above your heads, landing in a roll, but looking none the worse for wear considering how he kept on waddling off. Kinda reminded you of Pecker a bit, though he was back home for the time being. “Yeah, watch your heads.”

As you enter, you try to walk slowly. Y’know, give Jessica time to take it all in. The Atrium Natura was a pretty sweet place, you supposed- it looked like a massive, well, atrium, with ten floors practically all made out of bark and stone, all circling a center consisting of an indoor pond. Just about everything in this room was either made from organic materials…or at least had the look enough to fool most. The motes that must’ve went into this had to have been an astronomical amount. Seemed impressive, though.

Kids of a number of stripes seemed to wander and flit around here, to boot. Animal-likes, plenty of elves you could see, and others that seemed to just enjoy the surroundings. And yet, it was largely quiet. Or at least, rife with only natural noise, as opposed to the usual yelling and shouting and crying of kids. “This is where you go when you kinda just want to zen out and do the whole ‘one with nature’ thing. Or in my case, punch a tree until I felt better,” you suggest.

“Really?” Izumi asks flatly.

You can only shrug. They were sturdy trees.

“It’s pretty…” she says quietly. Yeah, it’s pretty for sure. The place is big and sprawling, and…oh, neat. There’s a little map here. Though you should keep in mind you needing to get back to the movie shoot.

>The Lake of Serenity. In the center of the Atrium Calm, gentle, a nice place to restore yourself. You suppose.

You think she’ll like the Rainbow Glade, at least. You barely remember it, being honest- but it was a pretty nice little field of flowers. If you recall correctly, it was called that because it had them of every color in there somewhere.

Sure enough, after a bit of a trial of keeping Jessica on the right path to it all (she looked awfully enamored at the place, so you think you made the right choice in coming here), you make it around a small bend of hedges, to a field of flowers, rolling across a small, probably artificial hill. Nonetheless, they’re growing wild, no rows or order or anything. Just reds, greens, blues, oranges, pinks, and all other colors.

You’re unsurprised when Jessica seems to…well, ‘toddle’ is the only word you can think of, towards the field- which isn’t exactly devoid of people. There’s at least three people nearby- one of them the quintessential young elven girl with a gossamer dress; though you notice she’s got a book on ‘Mercantile Emotional Standards and Optimal Engagement Practices’ next to her.

She passes right by that one, the two not even really noticing each other.

No, what she’s after is what looks like a group of purple, big petaled things. She already seems taken with the place. Nearby is a pair of twins- one of them reminds you of a satyr, while the other more of a nymph, judging by the leaves and vines coming out of her head. Why she’s in overalls, you have no clue, but the two seem to be enjoying each other’s company, and have no complaints when Jessica settles nearby. They’re not talking to each other, but they’re aware of each other’s presence, at least.

“Well, isn’t that a pleasant sight?” Izumi sighs with a small smile. You have to admit, it kinda is.

> So you’ll leave it at that and let the studio know you’re back. Izumi can handle the rest of showing her what’s where.

As much as you hate to say it, just watching her stand around and look at flowers is kinda dull. You didn’t really do that when you were here, like you said earlier. Although that does make you wonder- where WAS that old tree of yours? Well, it wasn’t YOURS, obviously, but it had more than a few marks in it by the time you left, even if it wasn’t that long anyway. “Hey, I’ll be back before long, okay?” you say to Izumi as you head towards the Deeperwoods.

“Alright? Something up?” she asks in confusion.

“Nah,” you admit, shaking your head. “Just gonna revisit the past a little.” And with that, you set off.

You have to admit, it’s a bit of a trek to the Deeperwoods. This place is BIG. But if you recall correctly, you’re nearly there after a while. Just have to take a left over here- yeah, you remember that massive rock with the moss. That means…aha!

There it is. You can tell because of how parts of the bark are ripped off, and other parts almost seem like something was scratching at the bark in a particular pattern.

Honestly, you can’t help but let out a little laugh. Seems like in all this time no one’s really touched it. That’s kinda nice. You used to come here whenever you were feeling pissed off, or just too depressed to really do anything else. Those days have long since passed, of course, but it’s still interesting how this little mark of your time here still remains.

You give a few raps against it for good measure. Yup. Still as hard as ever.

Wonder if- wait, something just flickered around you. Some sort of light-a familiar one, too…

“One side!” You’re forced to dodge out of the way as a kid nearly slams into your head, careening into the ground. For a moment you’re worried, but as the massive, fuzzy kid hops up non the worse for wear, you’re more concerned about why he’s glaring at you with those beady eyes. “No fair! Stop hiding behind the new kid!”

What.

“Get out here, ya little so-an-so! Immabout to dunk you in ranch or somethin’!” And WHY is there a cat and mouse game- no, fairy? Wait…

“Mewla?” The fairy stops at her name being called, and- yup. Mewla. In that camofly suit, no less. And now that her glow’s lessened, you can just make out her expression. The best you could call it is ‘annoyed’, maybe?

“Yeah!” the kid calls out. “She went an’ ruined my lunch!” Mewla shakes her head rapidly no, aaaand this is a thing now.

I dunno, kid looks like a cat… I’m thinking he might have been trying to eat the wildlife, to which Mewla, being a fae and thus a big fan of nature, tried to stop that.

You can’t help the frown that comes on your face. “I’m not a kid. I’m visiting.”

The monkey/cat/bear/you’re not sure just shrugs like it wasn’t an insult. “M’kay. But lemme at her!”

“Yeah, about that.” You fix your expression on the ‘perpetrator’. “Enjoying your Camofly suit, Mewla?”

She nods, twirling a bit to show it off. You think she’s smug about it, and then she gets closer to you and starts…trying to say SOMETHING.

“Don’tchu listen to her! She tried to steal my nuggets and-and spilled the whole thing!” he yells. Ah.” An’ if I went all the way back that’d take forever!” Mewla seems to take particular offense at this, flittering from behind you in her anger-

“...NOt…YOU LEFT THEM!... …aN HOUR!” You can’t make out everything now that she’s wow, she MUST be shrieking if you can hear her like that.

"So what?!" the kid responds. "It was still mine!"

Still. That was much less dire than you thought. Now it’s just annoying.

You sigh. This seems like a simple thing to solve, ultimately. “Okay, okay, both of you settle down. First!” You focus on the fairy. “Mewla, no stealing food. More importantly, don’t eat cold food ANYONE left out over an hour ago. That’s just unnecessary.” You can tell she starts to complain, but you cut her off. “Look, think of it as an advanced five second rule. Trust me on this.”
Quickly moving on, you turn to the kid. “For you, what’s-your-name-”

“It’s Junji!” he says heatedly.

“-Junji, then. Even if she stole them, you gotta remember that rule too. If you did something like that at the cafeteria, they’d throw it out for good reason. Germs, snot, trash, whatever might get on it. Not healthy for a growing kid, okay? Just about anyone reasonable would throw it away after an hour.” Not like Lorelei would, she keeps shit out for ages before going back to it. Ugh. “At any rate, at the very least, she DOES owe you an apology. I’d take you to get some actual hot food, but I’m not going to be here long enough to do all that. So. Mewla?” You motion to the kid, despite her visible annoyance. “Sincerely, now.”

She actually drops a bit in altitude in her annoyance, but she lazily flutters over to Junji, and mutters something you can’t hear…presumably, anyway, considering Junji scowls and says ‘fine. But you owe me an extra lunch later!’

“That sounds good to me,” you interject, which causes him to smirk a bit. At any rate, get out of here, you two. Don’t let me catch you arguing again!”

You swear Mewla gives you a raspberry before she leaves, Junji bounding off in a different direction. You’re gonna have to speak with Noran about that later…

Ugh. Annoying. Actually…

And frankly, you’re kind of nervous.

Well, no. Nervous would be a bit of an understatement.

You’re actually kind of yelling to yourself. What on any plane of existence were you thinking!? Saving children is one thing, absolutely. You’re all for that, and there’s no crying child that you wouldn’t seek to aid in any way. But what possessed you to want to take THIS one in? She’s absolutely lovely, for certain. She has a spark of life to her now that she never had before, she might well have some interesting abilities, and she smiles adorably. But why did…no. No, you’ve done it so far. Now you just have to build up the courage to finish. Part of you knows that that sweet little girl sitting there in the flowers and now talking to that lovely little elfen girl there deserves a chance at proper happiness. Just…was this really the best decision to make? Perhaps? You’re more uncertain than you’d like to be.

Well…it’s not as though it’s something you have to answer right now. Miranda’s been lightening up a bit, but she can still drill to the core of an issue without excess. You appreciate that. You can straighten yourself up a bit, maybe see about getting a bigger apartment. This wouldn’t be like Miranda’s mentorship- she’d be living with you. You’d say you’re not ready for motherhood, but…well, goodness, HOW old are you now? At this point, you have to imagine it’s more a matter of mental preparation than any personality faults…right?

Oh, damnit- what will Julius think? It’s true, you’ve been a bit busy as of late, but to just drop this on him? That might scare him off entirely! No, you’ll need to bring it up later; preferably after a couple of dates or two. Really, he’s sweet and just so understanding about this…though you probably should do a bit better to reassure him. He was…understandably upset after your failure to admit to your primary job. Though that was, of course, entirely your fault. Having to figure it out from trying to call the library…embarrassing. And it really shouldn’t have happened. You should’ve been more upfront.

Like you will here! Just- later so he doesn’t think you’re just using him or think he’s not worth your time. Oh, she’s coming back here- with her friend in tow.

“Um…this is Ee-Ina?” she looks to the young elf, who nods. “Ee-na. An’ she says she likes my ‘aura’. What’s an ‘aura’?”

Ah. Well, you can certainly explain that…

Oh. Oh dear!

After waking her up again, you decide that it might be time to take her elsewhere; though Ena seems to want to play with her more. You could just bring them both, although it seems almost like Miranda is rather ambivalent about it…suppose she doesn’t have a lot of time, like she said.

You guess it’d be good to move on and get her to her room before Miranda leaves. She DID want to see her to her room at least. “I’m terribly sorry, but we need to get going. Jessica’s new here, and we wanted to see her to her room.”

Ena just nods, still smiling, and momentarily you wonder if perhaps she’s mute. Although no, Jessica said she talked to her, so maybe she’s just selective. “I’m guessing you two would want to see each other again?”

“Uhuh,” Jessica confirms, and Ena nods as well. “She’s nice.”

“Well then, we’ll have to make sure we know where you like to hang out. Is it just here or other places?” you ask. She pauses for a moment, before simply pointing back towards the field. “Alright, fair enough. But now you know, right?” you say, looking to Jessica.

“Yeah,” she agrees. “I’ll come back soon, okay?” she asks. Ena, again, just nods. Yup. Very quiet.

With that, you all make your way out, and head towards the dorm wings. “Do you remember the number?” you ask the little one, just in case.

She pauses, considering… “Uh-uh.” Well, that was quick.

You sigh, taking out the small key chip. It has the tag with the room number on it. “E861,” you inform her. “Come, then.”

It’s a bit of a walk, though you notice there seems to at least be hall monitors every now and again- though judging by the badges, sashes, and occasional foot/scooter aerial chase, there’s a bit of trouble here and there. You can’t help but worry a bit.

“Yeah, this place has pretty much got its own little ecosystem,” Miranda suddenly pipes up. “I wasn’t here for too long, but the impression I got was that they let it happen as long as no one really gets hurt. But, that’s what the House Patrol is for.” She doesn’t elaborate. “Jessica’ll be fine. Don’t worry.” Well, at least she seems confident.

Before much longer, you finally arrive- it’s nothing too special on the outside- a basic slate grey door. You hand the chip to her. “Just tap it against the glowing thing there, and watch.” She does, and the door slides open to reveal…

A rather decent looking living space. There’s two sets of bunk beds, one on either side, and there’s a small kitchen space a bit off to the side. There’s also a bathroom. Essentially a small studio apartment, really. Not bad at all.

And sitting on the lower bunk is a human man, or at least a teenager looking sort. He’s typing something down on his tablet. With soft blue hair and brown eyes, and a pristine white overcoat and slacks. He looks fairly normal, and as he looks up, a smile blooms on his face as his eyes fix on Jessica. “Ah, hello there! Pardon the presumption, but I take it you’re our newest little earner?” She only nods shyly. “Wonderful! My name’s Richard Strace. You can call me Richy. I’ll be your first-year guide in the Care House, alright?”

Hm. She seems nervous.

Well, judging from her reluctance, you’ll just have to speak for her a bit. She’ll get used to it soon, but for now…you step up, offering a hand. "I'm Izumi. A pleasure, Mr. Strace."

“Likewise,” he responds amiably, taking note of you and Miranda. “Is she yours, then?”

“Not quite,” you say. “This one's Jessica. She's only recently arrived, so I appreciate all the assistance. She's still in awe, so to speak."

He allows himself a small laugh. “Right, right, tends to be the case. But don’t worry, I’ve done this for quite a while. I’ll be able to answer any questions she has or any worries. Speaking of, do YOU have any?”

“Who are her roommates?” you ask quickly. That’s the obvious one.

“Oh, I couldn’t say- don’t know yet. Just that they’re two newcomers like her. We’ll all be getting to know each other; you’re just the first here!” He kneels down to get more to her height, making sure to keep smiling. “I can promise you that they’ll all be able to get along, though. We make sure that general personality is taken into account so there’s no immediate friction.” Yes, you recall the receptionist saying something along those lines…

“Hmm…Miranda?” you turn to her, who looks at you in faint surprise. “Was this a thing you dealt with when you were here? The placement and guide and whatnot?”

“Kinda,” she frowns as she thinks back. “I didn’t have three, though. They deemed me ‘reasonably mature’. I had more like, a general dorm mother? And one roommate, but you couldn’t get me to remember her face or name or anything. I just remember she was a rocker and snored a lot. I ended up leaving before long, so yeah.”

Hm. Any other questions, then…?

Thinking about it, and seeing Jessica shaking a bit brings to mind something. She hadn’t walked this whole way, you’d carried her for a time as she was starting to complain, but hadn’t thought much of it. But Miranda HAD said what was likely the cause of that. "I was wondering when she would be able to get a general physical examination. Before bringing her here, we had some scans done, and the results revealed that she has muscular atrophy…"

“Really?” He looks concerned at that. “Well, I hope she hasn’t been forced to do too much yet. But don’t worry, we’ll be giving her an examination in-house, if needs must. If you’d prefer something a bit more thorough, I can recommend doing it as soon as you can from a third-party. You were told about the week until the new class cycle starts, right?” You nod. “Great. You should have plenty of time. I can recommend a children’s facility, if you want it, and you just have to make sure the Care House is informed and signs off on it, since she’s under our watch.”

“Please,” you agree, and Jessica looks on as he informs you of the place and the address, clearly worried. ‘Sproutling Children’s Care’, apparently. It’s not too far away, either.

“Now, I have to ask, what’s her nature?” He has an uncertain look on his face. “I’m just making sure, they’re widely varied over there, so I’m sure they can do something, but just to be sure…”

“We’re not, unfortunately,” you admit. “Sure, that is.”

“Ah, drat. Well, they’ll give you an answer for certain, anyway,” he sighs. “But, once she’s restored to good physical health, we’d be more than happy to have her here and getting used to the Care House.”

“Hey, speaking of that,” Miranda suddenly pipes up, and you have to avoid expressing surprise at the intense look on her face. “I’m currently mentoring three- four other students as Outgoers, and I kinda want to have them practice how to integrate new arrivals into the Intersection, as well as figuring out possible career paths for them. Would it be possible to request Jessica’s presence for a lesson or two?”

Huh. She HAD been talking about that. Surprisingly serious about it, it seems. Mr. Strace seems just as surprised, but recovers quickly. “I don’t see why not. So long as she’s not being directly exposed to danger or risky environments without prior consent. And as long as she finishes her schoolwork on time, of course,” he looks at her with another smile.

She’s still kinda halfway behind you, but she’s at least keeping his gaze- though she’s clearly flagging, by how she’s swaying. It’s a work in progress, you suppose.

Nonetheless, Miranda just nods in acceptance, and seems to have no more to say. “Well, then! I can see she’s tired. Care to have a quick nap here? I promise the beds are fantastic!”

“...mm. Mm kinda tired, yeah.” she admits.

“Not hungry?” you ask.

She shakes her head. “Not a lot. Some”

“Big eater, right?” Strace asks knowingly, and you nod. “Right, that was in the file I just got. Don’t worry, we’ve got enough for her.”

“Alright, then, we’ll leave you to your nap,” you decide, though you can’t deny you’re a bit nervous. That said, you largely trust them to treat her well. “Sleep well, Jessica. I’ll be back before long.” She nods, and to your slight surprise she trundles up to you, giving you a hug around the legs.

Hard for your heart to not melt at that, and even so you can’t resist returning the favor. “Tanks for helping me…”

You notice Miranda give her a simple pat on the head. “Keep safe, kid.” Miranda offers. With that, though, there’s not much else for you here. You both leave, keeping quiet until the front door. From there Miranda turns to you. “Alright, so I REALLY need to get back to the set. Still can’t believe I’m doing film work, but they’re probably going to have a cow if they hear I came back and didn’t immediately contact them, so I’m just gonna fake it for a bit, okay?”

You can only snort at that. “If you say so. Thanks for tagging along, though.”

“No prob,” she dismisses. With that, you both say your farewells, and she’s off to the studio. As for you, you have a schedule to make…

…although you’re a bit shocked when you learn it’ll cost anywhere from 8 to 12 Large Motes. Mind, that’s for everything; a body scan and species report, healing the muscular issues, and a couple of other things they mentioned that might be an issue, like bone concerns and the sort. You’re pretty sure they’re upselling it a bit, but if nothing else, that it’s for the Care House entitles her to a bit of a discount. She’s scheduled for two cycles from now. Fair enough.

For now, though…you should probably:

I'm curious as to how they plan to fix the film now that one of the main actors is gone. We also need to think what to bank the Investigators' favor on, can't really do that with the others.
I'm also interested in seeing what happens if we invite Zipper to the set and she is accepted as an advisor.

“Alright thank fucking everything you’re here again,” Nia says as she and the director hustle you to one of the sets. “Look, normally we give people some time before we throw them behind the camera, but we know you’re good for fight scenes, so we can knock a couple of those out tomorrow- unless you’re hurt. Please say you’re not hurt.”

“I’m not hurt,” you respond. “Sooo…what are we doing?”

Langil sighs. “Well, first, you need to get into wardrobe, and THEN we need to get you going over the basics. We’ve got a few scenes that don’t need a ton from you character-acting wise, and then…”

Well, you don’t tune her out, but it IS a lot to digest. You’re going to have to just take it as it comes. “I think I get the picture.”

“Alright, good, because we’ve got a scene we’ve been keeping on the backburner. It involves you trying to basically fight through a stellar train before the whole thing goes up in flames. How does that strike you?” Wow. That’s actually kinda interesting.

“Any particular details?” you ask.

“Same as before. No magic, don’t kill anyone, obviously. Or break bones. Remember the bar fight? We want you to hit certain marks, but that’s about it, otherwise, go nuts. Not gonna hamstring a good thing.” Oh. Well, that’s good to hear.

The start of it is fine, as far as you can tell, nothing wrong with the crushing the guy into a steel pipe in the waste deposit cart first half. The quick melee through the passenger cabin goes well enough, too, with a duck and sweep ‘conking’ one of them unconscious, and the second getting ran into a sitting area and put through a table after dodging a couple of ‘gunshots’.

It’s around the point where you needed to fight through a ballroom that things got…rough. To say the least.

The first slip up was when you were supposed to trip up a guy so that he went over the bar. There’s, sadly, no real excuse for that bit, you just plain forgot. That caused a retake. Fortunately, no one was particularly annoyed at that. Things happen.

The second take went better- until one of your swings went wild and ended up spilling a glass of wine on the floor- a hazard that wasn’t expected to be there, nor was safe to keep around. Another cut. Again, nothing too bad, but a few people you noticed started to get knowing looks. What those looks mean, you have no clue.

Although come the third retry, you’re starting to get an idea. Also the fourth. And the fifth.

Eventually? It’s when you straight up botch a high bicycle kick, miss, and go careening ass-over-teakettle into the wall that you get fed up.

“FUCK!” you let rip as you lay on the floor, around fallen chairs and various props.

“Cut!” the Director yells again. “Styles, you’re falling apart. We’ll come back to this scene, relax. We’ve got other stuff to shoot. Take a shower, take an hour or two to breath, and we’ll start on something else when you get back.”

You can’t help but huff, still accepting an arm up. “No biggie, skids happen,” the goon actor says amiably. You’re still not a fan of it, though. “Clean up, clear your head, come right back. You just got back from your main thing, right?”

“...yeah,” you admit. Sorta.

“There you go. Get some breathin’ room in.” He pats you on the back as you head off, the director already calling for shifting scenes and sets. Great. Peachy.

Well. Shower and a lie-down DOES sound good about now…hope they kept your living space clean.

Unfortunate. However, because these are movie shoots, we can always roll better next time to make up for the bad takes. On real missions, you can't do that.
Even if somehow the movie bombs, we must ensure that we are one of the few positives that come out of it.

Fortunately, they did. And frankly, a shower is indeed nice. Wrapped up for a moment in a thick towel, you allow yourself a comforted sigh as you make for the bed. It’s not good to sleep in your wardrobe, but a short nap before you take another crack at it should be fine. Hopefully it’s not too stiff-

And a certain blonde is laying sideways on the bed grinning like the cat that ate the canary. “Ooh la la!”

“MOTHERFU-” you dart back into the doorway as Lorelei’s rippling laugher meets your ears, and you have to hold in a LOT to not just scream her head off. “Okay, WHEN did you-”

“Like three minutes ago!” she cheers. “I heard the shower going and your door wasn’t locked.”

“And you thought the best thing to do was take a seat on the bed?!” Seriously?

Giggles are all that meet you. “Oh, relax.” You can hear the springs in the bed as she shifts position. “I really did just wanna say hi since I was on set, too. Maybe it’s too much Nura. Me and her have been hanging out a lot more lately.”

“Yeah, maybe.” You grind out.

“C’moooon, if you want me to say sorry, then one: sorry! And two: I brought a welcome-back gift! You wanna see it?” she teases. “It’s realllly neat!”

You can’t help but sigh. “Fine…let’s see what you’ve got, then. Sorry about the yelling, by the way. Really bad day on set.”

She scoffs. “Psh, no big! Happens to the best of us. So, check this out!” She reaches onto the other side of the bed, where she pulls up a bag. Not of holding, just a plain bag, it seems. “Okay, so like, I know you aren’t super big on decorations, but I just thought this’d be nice.” And here she brings out…a doll? It’s…well, it looks entirely unfinished. Slate gray and no defining features, just a lump of cloth. “Okay, so I had this fun little job recently where I TOTALLY ended up playing matchmaker, and I got this out of the deal! It’s what they called a Memodoll. Like, you hold it, and you think of someone really hard, aaaaand presto, it’s the person you thought of! Well, in miniature.”

As she’s holding it, you can see that yeah, it’s changing into…someone. A bit slowly, though, from what you can tell. Likely due to Intersection stuff- ah. Now you can tell a bit better that it’s…Nura? Well, you guess that makes sense. “They act like you think the person acts like, and they can even talk an’ stuff! But not for very long, like ten minutes, tops.” Yup, Nura’s face is definitely forming on the little doll. “But it’s really nice for if you’re, like. Lonely or something on a job.”

You’re…not sure how to describe it. “Wow. Thanks.” Although thinking about it, someone else might be able to use this better… “Actually, though, have a surprise for you too.” She gasps dramatically before you continue. “We didn't exactly come back alone. You might want to talk to Izumi, she needs all the help she can get."

Lorelei purses her lips in surprise. “Hmmm? Say what now?”

“Just trust me on this one. I’ll let her actually say what happened. Anywho, what about some tips for back on the shoot?”

She cocks an eyebrow. “Oooooh, if you wanna distract me, fine, but I’m not forgetting! So! Let’s hear what you’ve got to do…”
Well, her tips are…useful, that’s for sure. It helps that you kinda had to really focus on her in order to block out the site of a 10 inch Nura grinding on Lorelei’s leg. You’re not going to even wonder about that.

Really, though, the idea about slow but safe and some other tips are useful. She leaves not long after your little counseling session, the doll soon returning inert, and you at last get a bit of sleep. Hopefully things’ll go better after this nap…

“Aaaaaand CUT! Brilliant, folks!” You can only sigh as the last shot is done for today. You had a lot to make up, and you’ve been at it for some hours, now that you felt at least a bit refreshed. The sleep and the advice had done wonders for you, allowing you to pick things up again and actually finish your shots with a minimum of retakes. There were a few, of course, but those were less because of your missteps and more because of random error. The crew was fortunately up for a bit of extra pay, and a lot of your scenes, apparently, were solo sequences- yourself as the lone, implacable hunter juxtaposed against the new protagonist who had more friends on his side. From the script you had (finally) gotten, you were going to meet him eventually, but remain something of a rival/counterpoint to his actions, and THAT was when you’d start talking more. “Alright, everyone, that’s a wrap for now. Let’s all get some grub, take a good, long lie-down, and be ready for tomorrow, yeah?” Confirmations ring out…
