Last time, on Dragon Ball Tuffle Quest Kai! The Mifan Tournament continued, with Peppa and Keli facing off against the likes of Fu and Basilea, managing to claim victory in spite of the demon pair’s unrelenting power and surprising skills. Tien and Vegeta manage to defeat the teamwork of Chuu Lee and Mark Satan, while Videl and Kuriza overcame Yamcha and Lapis. In the day’s semi-finals, Peppa and Keli fought Videl and Kuriza, with Peppa actually helping Kuriza unlock a new power yet still managing to come out the victor. It’s the last matches of the day, who will make it to the overall final rounds? And what of the next day’s matches? Good luck, Peppa! Good luck, Izzy!

You’re suddenly jolted back awake as you feel the surge of power between dad and Vegeta. Your eyes focus on the pair, with the long, flowing, golden hair of Super Saiyan 3 contrasting sharply the more primate-like appearance of the Primal state of Super Saiyan. They fly up higher, looking like specks visually but feeling like two stars clashing from the raw power they’re radiating. Yet… even with all the power he has, dad’s not able to match Vegeta’s raw strength.

You next notice Tarble dash into the ring, raising up both hands, and then pulling them back as he goes Super Saiyan. Tien heads in as well as dad and Vegeta clash, with Vegeta still holding the upper hand. He’s confident. Timer’s counting down. Tarble avoids Tien’s attacks as best he can, but the Crane School Master has a definite upper hand. There’s a sonic boom that shakes the area as Vegeta knocks Goku down towards the ground with a furious punch. Dad… come on…

Wait. Wait, he’s planned this! Even as Tarble launches a Galick Gun at Tien, it’s just a distraction, and Tien seems to realize it too late! Dad’s fall accelerates as he recovers and gets into a dive! “DRAGOOOOOON…!”

Tien tries to ready a Solar Flare to counter, but Tarble manages to kick him in the gut to distract him. He’s prone for a moment, but it’s the moment that dad needs! With Tarble leaping back out of the ring, even Vegeta realizes what their plan is.

“FIIIIIIIST!”

With a golden dragon erupting from Goku’s fist, it engulfs Tien with overwhelming force, even as he tries to put up a barrier with the Spirit Bits. Light erupts across the arena, and when it fades, Tien’s knocked down, for the count.

Yet, looks like Vegeta was able to get out of active combat before he got time’d out as well. “Hmnh. I’ll hand it to you both, that is some impressive teamwork.” he admits. “Had it not been for Tien’s warning at the last moment, you’d be able to say you claimed victory against us.” Vegeta then smirks and points his thumb at himself. “Sadly, I’m still in this. And neither of you have the power to beat me.”

“Won’t know that unless we try.” dad responds cheekily.

Cocoa sits back, exhaling and rubbing the side of her head. “All this power they throw around is… kinda hard to take.” She looks a little tired… which is honestly understandable. She’s able to actually sense all this energy being thrown around, yet she’s way, way below anyone in this tournament.

>A. Yet it’s not power alone that’s winning this, it’s skill, teamwork. Even Vegeta’s kinda showing that

You place your hand on her shoulder, asking calmly and softly, “Hey, you okay, Cocoa? I know you’re still just… learning about this stuff, but, well, how high do you want to push?”

She refocuses herself and takes in a deep breath. “I… I think I’ll be okay. Don’t think I’ll ever actually want to be in that ring, but, I feel like I can adjust to knowing just… how far this all goes.” She places her hand on yours and smiles. “Plus, I do want to be there for you when you’re here, giving it your all.”

Aaaand you feel all warm and fuzzy inside. You do have to turn back and watch the match, but boy is that gonna leave you feeling all the more ready to win the next round. Speaking of which… ‘Hey, Keli, what do you think about that? Tien’s not as invincible as he seemed.’

‘True, but he’ll also be all the more ready for something like that.’ she replies. Dad actually carries Tien out of the ring, and also high-fives Tarble as the younger Saiyan switches in. Vegeta raises his eyebrow, curious.

“Are you going to challenge me, little brother?” Vegeta questions.

“I’m not holding any hopes of beating you like that.” Tarble states, pointing at his brother. “But I need to do this. I need to test for myself how far I’ve come.”

Vegeta seems amused by that. “Hmnh. Very well.” He powers down to base and walks in again, then transforms into normal Super Saiyan once more. “Show me what you’ve got!”

>A. Cheer on Tarble! He can do this!
>B. …This might actually be a strategy Tarble’s come up with. Hrmn. Keep watch over what dad’s doing

…Hrmn. They might be up to something. You’ll need to keep watch over what dad’s doing, but also, Tarble might be able to surprise Vegeta… if he can ascend beyond Super Saiyan. At the same time, Vegeta’s been humbled once already, and he’s pretty crafty when he needs to be. He could still have something up his sleeves. …Well, gloves.

Either way, you know what you have to do. “Come on, Tarble! You can do this! Show ‘em what you’ve been training for!” The pair launch at one another, Vegeta more testing the waters while Tarble gives it his all. It does actually leave Vegeta on the back foot a bit, though he still doesn’t seem worried. You contact Keli again, asking her, ‘If you don’t think an overwhelming and sudden attack will work as well, what do you propose?’

‘Something that doesn’t require us actively planning it out, but can be set up pretty early… maybe like your Ki mines. Hrmn. I’ll need to think a bit more, but I’m starting to hatch a plan.’

‘Keep me updated.’ A spin on the Ki mines… maybe that could work. As you see Tarble trying his all, you notice that dad’s powered down, and is actually trying to recover as much Ki as he can. Ahhh, clever! But is that all? Vegeta does seem aware of this, but he isn’t too bothered by it. Tarble keeps pressing on, taking the fight into the air, but Vegeta ends up going on the offensive now… and it’s a bit hard for Tarble to keep up. They’re out of visual range again… but there’s something odd you’re noticing. Tarble’s charging some kind of Ki sphere. What’s he-?

‘Ghost Pepper, keep your goggles on! Over!’ mom warns suddenly, and you can feel her teleport next to Baozi.

Wha-? OH!

“BURST OPEN AND MIX!”

You feel Tarble’s Ki surge up high, and dad keeps his eyes shut tight as he keeps trying to recover Ki. Vegeta attempts to stop Tarble from transforming, hitting the Power Ball, but it’s too late to prevent it completely. Tarble lets out a roar and knocks Vegeta back down, trying to contain the mixed power of Super Saiyan and Oozaru.

Vegeta… laughs. A genuine, almost… friendly, laugh. “Hahaha… hahahaha! You know what, little brother? I’m actually impressed. You’ve really come into your own. But can you contain all that power?”

“Let’s find out, brother!” he responds in a roar, launching at Vegeta again.

>A. Now THAT’s a surprise! Come on Tarble, keep at this!

“Now THAT’S a surprise! Come on Tarble, keep at it! You can do this!” you cheer. You… then feel a bit of the munchies creeping up on you, and you check around for some snacks. Cocoa’s got popcorn. Popcorn, yes, good. You politely ask her for some, and use telekinesis to march them to your mouth. After you’re done, she ruffles your hair a bit, teasingly calling you a dork. That may be so, but you’re a dork with some good snacks.

Vegeta still doesn’t seem like he’s taking things too seriously just yet, but he is much more engaged with the battle now, not yet back in his Primal state, but actually trading blows with Tarble. While the younger Saiyan does have substantially more power at his disposal, and surprisingly fairly good control over the form for now, it remains to be seen if it’s enough to really close the gap. The bigger issue for Tarble is one that all Oozaru kinda have, much more mass to move around. While his speed’s kept up with his power increase, he’s a bigger target, and Vegeta’s a smaller one. He needs something else to really get this done.

That’s when dad finally has finished recovering his Ki, and he powers right back up into Super Saiyan 3, blasting into combat and… oh, clever! “RAIO-KEN!” Goku yells as his aura blazes and sparks even higher, the raw speed tearing up the tiled floor as he manages to get a solid hit in on Vegeta. The Saiyan prince immediately goes back into Primal, and while he’s got the power advantage, dad can react just a bit faster with the Raio-ken. And that’s not all. Tarble is able to pepper him with Ki blasts and the occasional mouth beam. Vegeta’s on the defensive! They can do this!

And… Vegeta actually looks thrilled, to your surprise. That’s… kinda worrying. Dad keeps dashing around him, pelting him with lighter jabs, kicks, and elbow strikes, and topping it off with the Meteor Combination, but Vegeta quickly recovers, a sphere of spiraling Ki forming in his palm. He leaps up into the air...

“SUPER GALICK GUN!” Tarble roars, firing up at him.

Yet Vegeta rockets at the attack, the spiraling sphere still in hand, and actually pushes the beam back. Dad tries to intervene, but Vegeta blasts him away with his free hand. Eventually he’s able to force the attack back at Tarble, the arena again shaking from the sheer force of the attack connecting. Tarble falls back, prone, his power starting to fade.

Goku tries to get over to help his partner, but Vegeta grabs his brother’s massive form by the tail, grinning wide. He then lifts Tarble up, and uses him as a massive club to smack Goku down underneath. Dad tries to get up, but Vegeta leaps up and stomps down, pinning them both. And… the count runs out.

“SON GOKU AND TARBLE HAVE BEEN IN THE RING TOO LONG!” Pilaf declares. “VEGETA AND TIEN ADVANCE TO THE DAY’S FINAL ROUND!”

The crowds cheer, Tien having regained consciousness after being healed up and nodding approvingly. Vegeta holds up a fist, panting in exhaustion, but… happy, surprisingly. He jumps down, walking out of the ring as dad is able to get up from under Tarble, wiping his brow as he powers down.

“H-heh… d-damn, good one, Vegeta…” Goku admits. Tarble slowly sits up as well, hanging his head a bit.

Vegeta looks back at them. “You’ve come a long way, Tarble.” he… says in genuine praise, to Tarble’s surprise. “You and Kakarot truly did come close to defeating me, and just might have if not for the rules of this Tournament. Keep improving. Continue to prove our father wrong. And be ready to face me again, with nothing holding us back.”

Goku lets out a soft chuckle, looking up at the large form of Tarble. “Wow… guess our training really did pay off, huh?”

Tarble nods down at Goku, then gives Vegeta a thumb’s up.

So. This is it. Pilaf says there will be a short intermission before today’s final match, but then… it’ll be the four of you.

And you and Keli are ready. Ready to win!

You give Cocoa a kiss on the cheek and teleport back to Keli. She seems determined, but also very aware of how challenging this all will be. There’s still some time before it starts. Let’s see… there are Vegeta and Tien, getting healed up. Dad and Tarble are flying out of the arena, looks like mom and uncle Acer are following them. Fu’s actually done some ring repair again and… is casually chatting with Pilaf some more. Izzy and Pantea are talking with Videl and Kuriza, and a few other fighters are more or less just waiting. You catch Basilea glance at you and just give a nod.

“Gonna check up on dad and Tarble, and maybe see if mom and uncle Acer have anything to say.” you tell Keli.

“All right. Might be worth that input.” she says with a nod, the both of you heading out. You… surprisingly catch glimpse of Tarble’s form shrinking back down. Huh. Vegeta did destroy the Power Ball, but had the Blutz Waves faded from him already?

Goku pats his shoulder. “You did great out there. Might not be taking home the Champ title, but you came pretty close.”

Tarble smiles and nods. “Thank you. I… still have a long ways to go, but I feel more capable than ever of protecting my home.”

“Tarble!” a soft, almost squeaky voice calls to him. Ahh, it’s his wife, Gure. The little alien woman hugs him tight.

“I’m glad for you too.” you add as you walk closer. “But man, pulling out that trick was something else! Went above even my own expectations!”

He rubs the back of his neck bashfully. “Thank you, Peppa.”

“So, you did manage to beat Tien, but Vegeta learned his lesson from last match pretty well.” Keli brings up, getting to the point.

Maple nods in agreement. “Can’t underestimate him. It was a good strategy, but…” She places her hands on her hips. “Maybe a bit more warning next time before you toss a Power Ball up into the air, yeah? Had to get Baozi some glasses with seconds to spare.”

The two Saiyan men laugh nervously. “Yyyyeah, but hey, worked out in the end, right?”

Maple boops him on the nose. “Becaaaause, monkey boy…?”

“Ehehehe…” He rubs his head. “Because I’ve got a pretty clever wife?”

Acer shakes his head. “Same as ever, Goku.”

“A-anyway.” Keli speaks up again. “We’re up against them next.”

“We’ve got our strategies, but what about you guys? Anything you’d have done differently, dad, Tarble? How about you, mom? Uncle Acer?”

Goku crosses his arms. “Well, might have been able to wear him down more if I kept my distance better. That Primal form is seriously tough, but if we could just keep avoiding the worst hits, we might be able to hit him with a lucky ring-out.”

“I’ve got something I’ve developed specifically to deal with Vegeta’s new power.” Maple states confidently. “Don’t know how well it’ll work in combat, but the idea behind it is solid.”

You tilt your head. “…And that might be?”

She winks and grins cheekily. “A secret. For now.”

Damn. Oh well. “Still, there’s also Tien to worry about.”

Keli nods. “Master Tien’s not invincible, but he’s also a lot harder to really deal with.”

“He is, yes, but his skillset is closer to one we’re more readily able to deal with.” Acer states. “Plus I don’t think he’s as capable of sharing his power with Vegeta as w-mhurh-” Maple covers his mouth and gives him a glare.

“Brobro.” she warns.

(cont.)
>>
>>5209946
“Ahem.” he coughs. “Anyway, we’ve got our ways of handling them.”

“So you do.” Keli comments, narrowing her eyes.

Goku places his hands behind his head. “Well, I’m gonna get some grub. That fight really worked up an appetite!”

“Hah, I can agree with that.” Tarble chuckles, walking off with him.

‘Well. That’s a bit of insight into it. Fusion?’ you telepathically ask Keli.

‘They can certainly fuse, but I don’t think it’s something your mom would try to keep secret…’ she points out.

Well, in any case, you’ve gotten some things to think on. Walking back, you’re actually approached by Basilea. She looks down at you. “…Peppa.”

“Yes, Basilea?”

She takes in a deep breath. “Good luck.”

You smile. “Thanks.”

Keli raises an eyebrow. “Is that all?”

“The sooner this is over, the sooner I don’t have to babysit… him… any longer.” she glares in Fu’s general direction. She thinks it’s supposed to look cool and intimidating, but really it just comes off as goofy. You do your best to keep yourself from giggling. “What?”

“Nothing, nothing… heh, just, the relationship between you two seems a lot more… normal, than I was expecting.”

Basilea pouts. “Hey!”

“Not a bad thing.” you tell her.

She shakes her head and closes her eyes. “…Keli. I know you and Melee have talked more about your pact, and that shared power you now have with her. Have you found what the two of you need to bring the most out of it?”

She nods. “I believe so. But one way to find out.”

“Then be wary of the triclops, and in spite of what your pride might tell you, you’ll only be at a disadvantage if you face him with your best.” she says bluntly.

“I’m aware of that.” Keli retorts.

“Then good luck to you as well.” She turns and walks away.

Still got some time left. You and Keli find a place to sit and meditate for a bit, with you going over all the fights you’ve had in the tournament so far, and all the matches they’ve had as well. Everything that worked. Everything that didn’t. Everything that the two of you still wanted to try. From how you tried to bring the best out of Sibella and Kokoro, how Basilea showed off plenty of new tricks and Fu gave glimpse on just how strong he really is, how Videl gave it her all and how Kuriza tapped into a new, glorious golden form.

How Vegeta and Tien were able to overcome the PTO fighters with relative ease, how Chuu Lee was able to overcome Vegeta but fall to Tien in the end, how dad took out Tien but he and Tarble weren’t ready for how crafty a humbled Vegeta could be. You and Keli have options. Taking out Tien first to leave Vegeta without the support will mean Vegeta’s going to be more on-guard. Trying to focus on Vegeta first means a lot more effort put in to take him down, and Tien will be backing him up every step along the way. Keli did suggest the Ki mines, set them and have Tien worry over other things. That’s one thing you can work with. They’ll have expectations given how the two of you have handled yourselves so far… is there some other way you might be able to surprise them?

‘Well Peppa, what do you think?’ Keli questions.

‘We need to focus on who to take out first, then everything else will fall into place.’ you tell Keli.

‘So… Vegeta? Master Tien?’

The two of you stand up, walking towards the ring. ‘Gotta see how things start off, but I think I’ve got something.’

Tien and Vegeta head in after the two of you, staring you down. “So, are you ready to lose in our rematch, Peppa?” Vegeta questions with a smirk.

You… ignore him, just letting out a chuckle, and looking to Tien. “You know, I gotta hand it to you, you’re even better than mom said you were, Mr. Tien.” You stretch a bit, psyching yourself up. “But I gotta wonder… are you really ready for Keli to surpass you?”

“That remains to be seen.” Tien responds, looking over to her.

Keli seems to catch on to what you’re doing. “I’ll be fighting with the intent to do so. Peppa and I are going to win not only this match, but the match after it. We’ll be the Mifan Champions!” Vegeta narrows his eyes slightly, as if he’s asking himself if he’s being ignored, but makes no outward comment.

You point towards Tien. “If we can take you down, this match is as good as won! And I’m betting it’ll be a bit easier than our previous matches.” Keli backs out of combat and waits patiently as Tien takes a Crane stance.

“I can see what you’re trying to do. It’s not going to work.” he warns, Vegeta grumbling as he heads back.

Your aura flares up as you raise your power up as high as you can take it without transforming, then launch forward at Tien, who blocks your leading chop and attempts a knee strike to your gut. You avoid it by leaping up and over him, attempting a spin-kick to the back of his head. Tien ducks down and backs away, taking a defensive stance. You rush him again, but this time as you try for a swerving punch to the side of his head, he blocks your attack with one palm with ease, then countering with a Machinegun punch that you have to block in response.

Keli actually takes this opportunity to try and teleport in and deliver an axe kick down at him, but not only does he avoid it, he actually manages to grab her leg as it comes down and flings her at you. She fires off a Ki blast that does hit true, but doesn’t do as much damage as she wanted as you catch her. “I can understand testing the waters a bit, but it doesn’t quite match the bravado you were showing just now. What do you hope to accomplish with that display?”

You grin. “Already told you. You’re the main threat.”

You sense Vegeta move in, Tien attempting to hold you and Keli in place with Telekinesis… but then you show him that your own skills with that are nothing to scoff at, as you cause Vegeta to overshoot you and Keli and come crashing into Tien, Keli firing and hitting the Saiyan prince in the back as she gets out of combat.

While knocked down, it’s not enough to keep him down for the count. Tien gets back up, and Vegeta glares at you again. “Are you really going to keep up this little act, Son Peppa?” he questions. “You’re trying some little trick, but I’m going to tell you here and now it’s not going to work. In fact, you’ll only delay the inevitable.”

Okay, we're back!

>>5210989
Your aura starts to surge up with a reddish tint as you yell out “Kaio-KEN!” and swerve around Vegeta and manage to get a decent hit in on Tien. Not enough to do much lasting damage, but just sudden enough to leave a mark. Vegeta powers up to Super Saiyan and launches a barrage of Ki blasts in your direction, but you use the Raio-ken to move out of the way and get way over to the other side of the ring. Tien however redirects the Ki blasts that are now headed towards him with Telekinesis and flings them right back at you. Your speed keeps them at bay, and subtly you start setting up some Ki mines, making it look like you’re hitting the floor to help you move out of the way of the Ki blasts, even setting a few in the places the deflected Ki blasts land. Vegeta’s forced to back out of combat, trying to refocus himself.

You circle around the ring and switch right back into Kaio-ken, and while he sees it coming, Tien’s unable to dodge it, and is forced to tank the hit with his arms. Even with him pulling out a sudden Kaio-ken as well, it’s definitely left a mark again. Good. This is working. But it also looks like he’s ready to switch in with Vegeta…

>A. Keli, jump in! Tien won’t feel the need to switch if you’re against him

As Tien starts to move back, you actually do the same, telepathically contact Keli. ‘Jump in! Tien won’t feel the need to switch if he’s facing you!’

‘Got it!’ She leaps in and lands ahead of you, the two of you high-fiving as you share a bit of your Ki with her.

Tien stops, glancing at Vegeta and nodding. He places his hands behind his back and walks forward casually. You can tell, however, his guard isn’t down as he approaches. “Are you really prepared to take me down, Keli? I’ve studied your new strength well. It’s impressive. But it can’t win against me.”

“Then it’s a good thing you taught me to not rely on just one trick to win every fight.” She powers up into Kaio-ken and uses Instant Transmission to get up close. Tien stops her fist… but that was a feint, and with her free hand she lassos his leg, then dodges a chop as she knees him in the gut, pulling to trip him up and bring him down. You see Tien mutter something as he blocks her next attack, the red aura of Kaio-ken fading into a brilliant white one, most of it concentrated around his arm as he blocks a Crane Strike and then pushes her back, using his other hand to fire a Ki blast at her lasso.

Keli tries to fire off a Dodonpa, but Tien counters with one of his own, with a lot more power behind it than hers has. She’s knocked back, but still holding up well. You see Vegeta still feels annoyed, but he’s also still fairly focused. Let’s see… what next…

>A. Keli, lasso him into the Ki mines!

That's not how the Dodonpa works. It's more on where the body is struck with it instead of how hard the body is struck, and it doesn't knock people back if done correctly, it goes through them, or into them to fuck up their body. It only needs as much ki as it needs to be effective.

It's the Golden Gun of ki attacks.

‘Keli, I’ve got an idea. Lasso the Ki mines together so you can knock Tien into them and all will converge on him. I’ll keep Vegeta off your back.’

‘Sounds like a plan. And I’ve got an idea on how to keep him from focusing on that plan.’ Keli starts to power up. “Master Tien, I know you want to see this new power I’ve achieved first hand. And you know what? I’ll show it. But first, let me ask: have you figured out HOW I use it?”

He raises an eyebrow at her, visibly on-guard. “Oh? Well, I can tell a lot from just the subtle shifts in your Ki. Your pact with your partner is the most important aspect. Your energy is harmonized, but also driven to new heights. I’ve sensed, however, that it’s incomplete in a way.”

“You’re right.” Keli admits. “I wasn’t completely sure how to harmonize it, to be honest. The mindset, emotions, I needed the right catalyst.” She smirks, the dark aura surrounding her. “Think I’ve gotten a better handle on it now, though. It’s something that Melee and I both share, an emotion that can push both of us to reach new heights, to victory.”

Tien’s aura flares up as well. “That being?”

https://youtu.be/A1OPeV-R91o

She smirks. “Desire.” Keli throws out a Ki lasso, enhanced with tremendous power, in Tien’s direction.

He dodges away from it, calling out, “SAMMA VACA!” Her Ki does drop, but Keli doesn’t let up. The Ki lasso connects with one of your Ki mines, and Tien tries to move away from it. Only for Keli to then teleport to his side and get a lucky hit in with a knee strike.

Vegeta finally jumps in, but you do the same, going Super Saiyan and materializing a quarterstaff to block his attack, even doing so casually. It works… at first, then Vegeta chops it in half, and punches you in the face. Ow. You back up a bit, looking at the broken bits of the staff, and block his next attack with one… while bonking him on the head with the other.

It doesn’t hurt him, but it does somewhat confuse and continue to annoy him, as you show still you’re not really taking him seriously. You then kick off him while Keli has her Ki lasso stretch out across the rest of the Ki mines, linking them all together. Tien finally realizes what the two of you are doing, but does so too late, as you slam your fist into him and knock him down into one of the mines. And that sets off the chain reaction, all the mines converge around Tien and explode! (And get the strangest sense that Piccolo’s nodding in approval.)

You... also kinda get caught in the explosion yourself, though you’re able to take the damage fairly well. Better than Tien, at least, because he’s hit pretty bad from that, but he’s not down yet. Keli’s still depowered from the Samma Vaca, but she might be able to win this on her own. Then again, while it might be cutting it close, if the two of you attack together, you’ll definitely take him out. There’s still Vegeta to be aware of, though, he’s got his guard up now and might try something risky…

You point out at Tien. “Keli! Let’s take ‘em out, and finish this together!” Then telepathically, you clarify, ‘You get Tien, I’ll hold off Vegeta!’

https://youtu.be/MEVVvjOi5BQ

She nods, then bursts forward, trying for a sudden barrage of Crane Strikes, but Tien’s able to put up his defenses in time, blocking her hits and trying to counter. Vegeta begins to charge up a Galick Gun as you look like you’re about to help her… buuut you instead teleport behind him, grappling him and pile driving him into the ground! Using the Multi-Form, you next leave one copy behind to distract him with rapid teleport-dodging, while the other you gets out of combat and charges to try and restore your Ki. Vegeta gets increasingly angry, even powering up to Super Saiyan 2 as he tries to hit you, but your copy is just quick enough to avoid the hits. Good thing, too, else he’d probably knock Peppa B down cold with a single hit.

Time’s of the essence. Count of seven… six… five-NOW! You teleport to your copy and both of you hit Super Saiyan 2 at the same time, one bonking Vegeta on the head as the other hits him out of combat. “Wait your turn, Vegeta, we’ll deal with you soon.” Peppa B tells him, slipping into the Baby Voice a bit- …Okay now that you hear it yourself it’s DEFINITELY a little eerie. The two of you recombine and get out of combat. Up to Keli now.

Tien places his hands forward, almost attempting a point-blank Solar Flare, sprouting extra arms to keep Keli occupied trying to deflect the attacks. But right before he lets it out, Keli actually manages a Ki blast right in his face… a surprising one, at that. “HELL BLITZ!” He’s knocked back, and Keli tries to draw up all her strength, actually managing to get beyond the Samma Vaca depowering she was hit with earlier. Winds swirl around her right arm, mixing with chaotic black and white energy, and with one mighty blow, Keli calls out, “SHO! TEN! KEEEEEN!”

You can almost hear Chuu Lee cheering for her. Tien is knocked high into the air, but he recovers and sets eight Spirit Bits, each empowered with Light Magic, to blast down at Keli. She dodges around them, yet one seems to hit! …And it’s an afterimage! Keli uses Instant Transmission to teleport right above him, hands together, then forming a triangle. Tien’s surprised… yet there’s also a slight smile on his face.

“TRI-BEAM! HAAAAAA!”

Tien is knocked completely out of the ring, landing in a square hole in the dirt. She did it. She did it!

…Aaaand Vegeta’s mad now. You can sense the power radiating off of him.

With Keli feeling better than ever about having beaten Tien, she turns to face Vegeta as he heads in, unleashing his Primal strength as he marches forward. You go full power too, maxing out your power in Super Saiyan 2 and letting your sparking aura surge around you. ‘Keli, combo time. Let’s hit him with our best!’

‘TK Hammer?’ she questions.

‘TK Hammer!’ you confirm.

Vegeta’s face twitches as he sees you charging up a Ki blast, and then dodges with ease as you fire off a barrage of Rasen Magnums… and feel a sudden pain in your gut, as Vegeta suddenly dashes at you, delivering a painful punch to your stomach. You’re left winded, but before he can follow up, one of the Rasen Magnums that he dodged hits him in the back of the head. And as he turns, another strikes him. And another, and another, until he’s barraged by all of the Ki attacks.

It doesn’t do as much damage as you hoped, but it’s not the main focus. Keli lassos his arms to his sides, then flings him around the arena with all her might, channeling some dark energy through it that looks like it damages him. You recover and ready your fist to punch him down… and Vegeta actually HEADBUTTS your fist before it connects. It hurts him, but it hurts you waaaay more, and your whole arm feels numb. He then breaks free, grabbing you and flinging you down at Keli, then placing his hands together.

“I’M FINISHING THIS! HELIX… GALICK GUN!” Vegeta fires out a spiraling beam at the two of you, and while you’re able to block the hit, it does some serious damage. And while Keli does try to hold off against it, it easily overcomes her defenses. When the beam and the smoke clears, you’re still standing, while Keli’s down… possibly for the count. Damn it.

You need to act quick. You use Multi-form and try to hide your Ki to keep Vegeta guessing, teleporting around him with body copies of yourself. Vegeta simply uses an explosive wave to knock you back, though thankfully Peppa B is able to get Keli to safety and start healing her up. A sudden surge of energy actually brings her back to consciousness, and… you can sense Keli’s strength actually return to full power. And then some!

But the other you isn’t really faring that much better. With your power split like this, the gap in strength is just way too much for you to make any real headway. What few hits you can land do little to stop him, and what hits Vegeta lands each feel harder than the last. You try to distract him with the CLOTHES BEAM, smacking him in the face with a BADMAN shirt, but Vegeta actually spins around to toss it away and lets out another explosive wave right as you attempt to try anything else.

“Is this it, Peppa?! Where’s that power you were so proud of last year?! DO YOU THINK YOU CAN WIN WITHOUT IT?!” A ferocious left hook manages to hit your cheek… but you take it, and your aura surges with a red tint.

“All right, you wanna see me push past my limits again? Fine, but the result’s gonna be the same as last time!” you yell back. The two of you clash in midair, each blow shaking the ring, quaking the ground and rocking the sky with tremendous force. You can dodge some more of his blows, but even with this increase, your split power isn’t enough, and you feel like your body’s trying to tear itself apart.

Vegeta eventually kicks you away, following it up with a quick, one-handed beam attack. You’re flying towards the edge of the ring. This is your chance! Peppa B teleports to him and grabs on to him, then manages to teleport him right next to you! The two of you reunite, and your full power returns! …But Vegeta recovers and flings you off of him. You just barely avoid hitting the wall.

“You sneaky little…!” Vegeta growls. But then, he’s frozen in place. Keli’s back in the ring, at full strength, and has him lock in a telekinetic hold!

‘Can’t hold him for long, make this quick!’ she tells you, using all her strength to hold him in place. You’ve got a chance!

All righty, we are back!

https://youtu.be/6OybF6sFDnQ

You hold your right arm towards the sky, swirling energy building up around it. “I’ll break my limits, time and time again. I’m well aware of how strong you’ve become, Vegeta. It might surpass my strength on my own, sure… but here? It’s the strength my partner and I share that will win the day! NOW! I’LL PUT EVERYTHING I HAVE INTO THIS, AND MORE! RRRAAAAAAAGH!” You bolt up into the sky, as if you’re going to break through the heavens themselves. Letting absolutely everything you can out, Super Kaio-ken completely mixing with this enhanced Super Saiyan 2, you blast down like a meteor. “GIGA! SPIIIIIRRAAAAAALL… BRREEAAAAAAAKKEEEERRRR!!!”

Even with Keli holding him, Vegeta’s able to bring his hands up to try and stop your attack, a swirling sphere in his palm again. He puts whatever power he can manage into it, turning it massive, and the two attacks meet. From the raw power alone, the ground underneath starts to tear and crater, and while you’re able to push him slightly… Vegeta’s still holding his own. Your body’s throbbing in pain, you can feel every muscle twitching as you try to put out just a bit more power. Come on… come on!

‘Peppa, together!’ Keli contacts you. ‘One final push!’

‘One final push!’ Here it goes! “RRRAAAAAAAAAHHH!!!”

As you keep pushing, Keli actually pulls Vegeta downward, and timed just right… the two of you finally bring Vegeta down! He hits the ground, and the surprise of that causes him to lose focus, your drill and his sphere breaking and erupting in a massive and blinding explosion. You’re flung away, hitting the ground as well. You try to push yourself up, arms and legs trembling, as you see the crater you left behind.

And there stands Vegeta… honestly not really much worse for ware than he was before. Scuffed up, but, he honestly looks like he could still keep fighting. But he can’t. Keli’s still in the ring, even if she looks like she’s about to collapse as well. You’ve won.

“What an unbelievable finish! Ladies and gentlemen, Son Peppa and Keli have beaten both Tien and Vegeta! They will go on to the final round!”

The crowds roar out joyfully, cheering your names. You… your whole body still feels like it’s on pins and needles, head to tail. Vegeta still stands there, looking down, processing what all happened.

‘Congrats, Keli. We made it through today. How do you feel?’ you question, looking up to her.

‘...It almost doesn’t feel real.’ she responds, looking down at her hands. ‘But… I think I feel good.’

You nod slowly, then look to Vegeta. He’s powered down, and he looks back at you. “…So, all that smack talk was a bluff, wasn’t it?”

You try to rub the back of your neck and ow ow ow arm hurts. You see mom heading over to you. “Was it too much? You didn’t seem too bothered by it… well, at least not as shouty as last time we fought.”

He raises an eyebrow, thinking for a moment, as Maple starts to heal you up. Stone-faced, Vegeta then tells you, “Work on your acting skills, you’re a bit too much of a goody two-shoes for that to be taken all that seriously.” He then starts to walk off.

You think you can hear Cocoa laughing. Once your body’s recovered, mom pulls you in for a tight hug. “Proud of you, Peppa.”

“Moooom…” you groan, but you’re smiling. Body… still feels a little numb, but it’s not gonna collapse at least. “Hey, Vegeta.” you call out, stopping him. You hold out your arm for a fist bump. “Good match.”

He turns back, then walks to you. Vegeta’s fist taps against yours, and he silently nods in acknowledgement. He finally walks off, and you can see Tien talking with Keli, the triclops smiling proudly. You… also see Fu talking with Pilaf again, while also casually repairing the ring.

Dad arrives and pats you on the back, which makes you flinch still, but… eh, you’ll live. “You were great out there, Peppa! Congrats! Whatcha gonna do now?”

“Do you need anything?” mom adds.

You ponder for a moment. “A hammock. And food. Lots, and lots, and LOTS of food.”

“Haha! Yeah, that sounds like a great idea.” Goku laughs, walking you back with mom.

“Gonna… probably spend some time with Cocoa for a bit too. Feeling… really, really tired…” you yawn a bit. But at least the day’s matches are finally over. You can take a well-deserved rest.

Meanwhile, up in the Afterlife…

“Told you she could do it.”

“Hah! You called it pretty well, Gohan.” King Kai responds. “And she did it using my technique to get the win! That was great.”

“Mean monkey man lost! Hahahaha!” Buu cheers, grabbing a bowl full of popcorn and shoveling it into his mouth.

“Hmmmm…” Kibito grumbles a bit. “I’m still not sure it’s wise to flaunt such demonic powers.”

“While it doesn’t look like the one she draws strength from is aligned with Towa, I do have to agree to a point. She will need to be very careful in using it, lest it starts to influence her.” Shin comments. “And… that Fu character does seem like quite the wild card…”

“Eh, Fu’s more manageable than you’d think. Just give him something to occupy his time with that’s not actively endangering the universe and he’ll not be that much a bother. As for Keli? She’s been trained by Tien, she’ll be fine. Okay, might do good to break for now. Next match is gonna be here tomorrow. Grand Kai, you up for another round of guitar lessons?”

“Is it… bad that I feel a little relieved that they’re what we’ll have to look forward to, if we win tomorrow’s matches?” Pantea asks you. “Not that I doubt we’d be able to beat Vegeta and Tien, but… I dunno, Peppa and Keli seem like a better match for us, y’ know?”

You place your hands behind your head, smirking a bit as you watch them head back in. “They definitely are a better match for our skills. Much more fun, regardless.” You spot Fu casually strolling through next, chatting with Basilea for a moment, to her annoyance. “…Thoooough slightly sad I missed my chance to fight them.” And deck Fu. In the schnozz.

Anyway, it’s gonna be evening soon, and looks like Peppa’s gonna go nap somewhere. Buuuut there are plenty of others around you could chat up, or even just people watch for a bit. Then again, maybe it’s better to stick with Pantea for a bit and go over strategies. Or you could chill for the rest of the day, might be better to not stress over the matches coming up.

“I’m gonna follow dad and Maple for a bit, see how they’re feeling about those last few matches.” you comment to Pantea. “Wanna come with?”

“In a bit, going to talk with dad and Videl myself.” Pantea responds. “Meet up in a while?”

“Sure! See ya.” And so you head on over, first giving Peppa a congratulatory pat on the back. “Congrats, cous, you’re 2 for 2 against Vegeta now. Buuuut don’t think this means you’ve won the tournament just yet. Pantea and I are definitely ready for ya.”

“Don’t get too overconfident, Izzy.” Maple says with a smirk. “You’ve still got a lot of people you need to face first.”

“True, true. Actually, have any insights into the fights to come?” you ask. “Can make it an Equivalent Exchange bit, offer some advice for the two you’re up against.”

Acer raises an eyebrow. “You’ve got something you know about them?”

“Fought ‘em, remember? World Tournament?” you remind dad. “Well, Killa at least.”

Maple seems willing to humor you. “All right, share what you know.”

“I’m just gonna find a place to rest.” Peppa tells you all, yawning a bit.

“With your giiiiirlfriend?~” you ask teasingly. She gives you a confused look of ‘Of course?’ and keeps walking. Heh, got ‘er! “Anyway, anyway, so! …Technically it was Sibella and Sachie that helped me beat Killa, but from what I’ve seen, he moves quick and tries to strike hard. Diversion tactics and surprise attacks are especially effective. Aaaand hrmn. Jewel on the other hand I would guess is able to cover those weak points, might be a more tricky fighter. So I’d suspect he should be dealt with first.”

“Not bad, not bad. Good to keep a tactical mind on things like this, no matter how strong your foes might be.” Maple says with a nod. “Okay, so Guldo? Definitely the one to worry about. His psychic skills are definitely nothing to take lightly, and he has abilities I still haven’t been able to really figure out yet. He’s not as physically strong, but that’s where Recoome comes in. He’s got some real power to throw around, and from what I recall, is also pretty tough defensively. Plus, the Ginyus know each others’ skills like the backs of their hands, so even if you have the advantage in power, their teamwork is nothing to scoff at.”

You nod, very carefully considering what she has to say. “Might be worth having a chat with them later, then. Any other thoughts?”

“Well, which teams are you thinking about?” dad asks you.

“Hmmmm… I guess Krillin and Nappa, for starters. That’s a matchup I wasn’t expecting.” …Is it the hair? Or, lack thereof? “And those two newbies, Hado and Sala. Wonder what their deal is, got any thoughts about them?”

“Hrmn. I’d guess Krillin and Nappa teamed up because of how unexpected such a thing might be?” dad speculates.

Maple rubs her chin, pondering. “Might also be something Nappa’s trying to do for himself…”

“What do you mean?” you inquire, tilting your head a bit.

Maple explains calmly, “I mean, that’s more something he’ll have to tell you on his own, but I think this might be a way to help him better find himself. Krillin’s honestly able to be pretty friendly with anyone, so either he approached Nappa, or Nappa approached him, and the two decided to work together. With that… well, Nappa’s a Saiyan, and has Super Saiyan 2 at the very least, while Krillin’s more tactical, tricky. Like what we said about Recoome and Guldo, it’s power and skill, though I don’t know how well they’ve honed their teamwork.”

“Honestly, I think Krillin’s the bigger issue.” dad tells you. “He’s plenty smart and tactical, and will be the brains of any operation. I bet Nappa’s gonna be even more willing to listen to him after what he saw happen with Vegeta.”

You nod. “Cool, cool. Honestly I was wondering if they teamed up to be Baldie Buddies or somethin’ but that makes sense. Now, Hado and Sala? What’s your take?”

Dad rubs his head. “Honestly can’t say much. You were talking with them earlier, weren’t you?”

“Mhmm. Sala seemed a bit… uneasy, to be honest. She’s aware of me as one of the World Tournament finalists, and I think she sees me as a little… weird?” You’re quiet for a beat as dad’s eyes narrow. “Okay, being COMPLETELY fair, that’s not without reason, but still. Also she talks kinda funny, like Jeice a bit. Doesn’t seem all THAT tough though.”

“Interesting.” Maple says with a slow nod. “Might have a different set of skills they rely on if they’re willing to fight in the tournament anyway.”

That gets you excited. “You… think they might be Magic users? Or even…” Oh your mind’s running wild with ideas. Maybe they’re Mahou? Maybe… maybe you could form your own team?! Mahou Rangers…

“Ehhhh. Don’t know about that.” your aunt responds. “Maybe you could talk with them again? Might be the best way to get a proper read on ‘em.”

“Gotcha! Okay, thanks for that!” You wave and walk off, checking with Pantea again. ‘Gonna try to find Nappa and Krillin, and hopefully Guldo and Recoome, wanna come with?’

‘Yeah, got some good insights from Videl and dad. Be there soon.’

You surprisingly find the four of them all together, though it mostly seems to be Nappa talking with the Ginyu Force members. “You know, Lord Kuriza might be fine with you rejoining the force.” Guldo tells the large Saiyan.

“Pass.” Nappa responds bluntly.

“Aw come on, even the Captain might be able to put in a good word for ya!” Recoome adds. “You might even be able to make the Force!”

Nappa ponders it for a bit… then shakes his head. “…Pass. Don’t think I could stand all that posing.”

“Aww, but the posing is the fun part!” you exclaim, getting approving thumbs’ ups from the two Ginyu Force members. “Actually, speaking of, since we’re gonna be fighting tomorrow and everything, got any ideas for poses?”

“You see this kid gets it.” Guldo comments to Recoome. “Much like Maple, honestly.”

“Well, I say this because my best skill probably would look even better with a nice pose or two to go with it, y’ know?”

“We’d done some research prior.” Pantea begins as she approaches. “But it’s always good to get the opinions of those who’re experts in the field.”

Nappa seems to roll his eyes at this, though Krillin elbows him in the side. He then glances at you and expresses, “Focusing too much on it always seemed like wasted effort to me. I’d rather keep the fighting to, you know, actually fighting.”

“It’s another display of skill.” you point out. “Coordination, adaptability, and a bit of style on top of it all.”

“Yeah! Captain has us practice to make sure we’re able to work together better. Builds teamwork, y’ know?” Recoome agrees.

“What do you have now?” Guldo inquires.

“Well, when I transform, I go for this…” You show off your transformation pose.

The four-eyed alien nods. “Okay, okay, and what does your partner have to back it up?” he questions, pointing at Pantea.

She blinks in surprise. “Uh. Well, I guess I could try something like…” And she does a perfect Moon Princess Pose… which gets a clap from Fu, who FOR SOME REASON is watching you all. You try to shoo him away.

“Hmmmmm…” Recoome murmurs. “They’re nice individually, but they kinda lack a bit of teamwork, y’ know?” he says.

“Hey, Nappa, got a request.” Krillin speaks up. “Doesn’t have to be super flashy, but why don’t we try for a victory pose ourselves?”

He frowns, and looks like he’s about to say no, but takes in a deep breath and counts down from five. “Victory pose, huh?”

“If you don’t like posing in the middle of a fight, that’s fine, but doesn’t preclude showing off a little if you win, right?” the shorter man suggests.

Nappa… seems a bit more agreeable with the idea. “Huh. All right, I’ll entertain this idea.”

All six of you start sharing ideas on proper posing, with Krillin and Nappa even managing to come up with a decent little victory pose together, mirroring one another as they stand side by side, delivering a kick into the air. Guldo and Recoome clap when they manage the basic idea of it. “See? You two already look more coordinated.” the little green guy notes.

“Hey, we were plenty coordinated before…” Krillin grumbles.

Nappa crosses his arms. “Huh. Guess I’ll have to tell her about this when it’s all over.”

That catches your and Pantea’s attention. “…Her?”

He flinches at the slip of tongue, but tells you both bluntly, “Therapist. Said this might be good for me. Anyway, think we’re done for now.”

He and Krillin head off, and… that honestly leaves more questions than answers. Well, still, looks like Maple was right, the Ginyu Force definitely has teamwork down. Better keep that in mind for later. But at the very least, you and Pantea can strike a pose better. Next up, you head over to Hado and Sala, finding them… kinda lurking around. You and Pantea decide to stay out of sight, listening in a bit.

“I don’t think it’s that good an idea.” the boy with two-toned hair comments.

“Look, you got a better idea? There’s a buncha’ crazy stuff we’d seen today. Just gotta wait until nightfall…”

https://youtu.be/qIyLlkgTNQc

…Sssssuspicious. You decide to pop up ahead of them. “Hi again!”

“GYAH!” Sala exclaims, almost stumbling back. “DON’T! DO THAT!”

You want to do that again now. “So, crazy fights today, huh?” you ask them, playing innocent. “Any that stuck out to the two of you?”

“...Are you always this, uh, forward?” Hado asks you, with Sala kinda standing behind him.

“Not always.” Pantea comments. “You two have somewhere to be?”

Sala stands up straighter. “Oi, we’re jus’ minding our own business.”

“Really though, have any thoughts on the day’s matches? Lot of pretty close ones with some interesting skills all around.” you question casually. “Like Kokoro and Sibella. Those two were pretty neat, huh?”

“That Magic she used was certainly something surprising.” Hado notes. “Figures that a Vampire might be particularly skilled in Shadow Magic. And Kokoro’s combinations of Magical abilities shows she’s quite competent in them as well. Lightning and Light can pretty easily be combined if you know what you’re doing, but to really get the most bang for your buck takes either a lot of practice or a lot of raw potential.”

Oho! So he might be the Magic user of the group? …Well, he IS dressed the part. “Yeah! I’ve spent some time with the Ghouls myself, they’re all pretty skilled. My aunt actually helped train them.”

“...She say ‘ghouls’ or ‘goils’ in some kinda’ accent?” Sala questions under her breath to Hado.

You… give her a look as if to say she’s calling the kettle black, but keep up your attempt to squeeze some chatting out of them. “And how about the Masked fighters? I’ll admit, I kinda wanted a chance at them myself, but was still interesting to see what they could do.”

“Yeah, Demons are like tha- I, er, mean…” She gives you a weird look, taking a step back. “…They’re. Uh. Sneaky. Like. Little devils. Yea.”

Ohohoho. Iiiiinteresting. “So you’ve fought folks like them before, huh? And sounds like you both know Magic. How’re your skills in that?”

Hado rubs his forehead. “Look, you’re a nice kid and all, but we really do have places to be.”

“All right, but we were willing to give you some advice on your upcoming match.” Pantea comments.

The two of them look at one another and let out a defeated sigh. “Fine. Fine. What do you have?”

“Well, we’re not completely sure how either of you fight, but just getting a glimpse of your foes, I would guess Pintar is more of a defensive tank, while Mighty Mask is more of the active fighter. One will take hits better while the other dishes them out. I’d expect them to rely on switching quite a lot in their fight.” Pantea explains.

“You might be able to use your ninja skills to take out Pintar!” you tell Sala.

“I AIN’T A BLOODY NINJA YOU LITTLE-!” Hado has to pull her back as she growls insults out.

“She has a point though. Sneak attacks.” he says to calm her. “All right. Thanks for that. And… good luck tomorrow.”

As the sun dips below the horizon, you and Sachie get to work seeking the pair out. At first you’d sensed them heading out of the castle and into Mifan itself, wandering the streets a bit before meeting someone that felt… odd. Person that was definitely above average in strength, and who seemed to vanish after they finished their meeting. You didn’t follow so you didn’t get a good look at the guy, but you can reasonably guess that’s the third person the two talked about.

“Soooo like… what do you think these two are up to?” Sachie questions, laying on her back on top of a wall, left leg swinging casually.

“Not completely sure. I’ve called the lady a ninja twice but like… mostly as a joke.”

“She’s no ninja.” Sachie states assuredly. “Maybe some kind of thief? Gave off a bit of a roguish vibe.” She holds up her hand and looks over her nails, which sparkle a bit in the moonlight. And then they… don’t. Huh.

“What, you think they’re here to steal something?” you question.

She sits up. “Not sure. But they’re on the move.”

You sense out and can confirm they’re back at the castle, and kinda meandering a bit, before moving through some of the lower levels. They actually manage to hide their Ki as you sense some guards approach them. Hrmn. ‘Pantea, you try to get ahead of them, Sachie and I will follow from a distance.’

Hiding your Ki as well, you locate the pair headed into a lower level of the castle, moving past an interior garden as they do. You hear them whispering to one another a bit, but can’t quite make out what. No guards around… and that kinda strikes you as odd. You swear you sensed some just a bit ago.

Hrmn.

You aren’t gonna confront them JUST yet, but… you do find this off. You try to sense out, and… you’re getting a familiar feeling. Almost like… the Forest of Terror. ‘Sachie, stay close. Something spooky’s going on.’

‘Righto. You’re the spooks expert.’

Okay, yeah, there’s some kind of illusion going on. You CAN sense beyond it, including the faint presence of some guards… but there’s also another presence you glimpse. Something… way more rotten. Not a living thing, but something Magic, and something just… wrong.

“Hado, yer sure it’s holding?” Sala questions quietly as the two continue to sneak ahead.

“Yeah. We’re not affected, at least not yet.” he confirms… and then pulls out something you weren’t expecting. A Scouter. Putting it on, he taps the settings a couple times. “All right, this wasn’t affected either. We’re on the right path.”

Cuuuurious. Doubly curious. Sachie pokes her head over your shoulder as the two of you move along the walls, following them. ‘Huh, ain’t that one of those Scouters you were tellin’ me about?’

You nod. ‘Aunt Maple kinda gave ‘em away like candy, so I guess stands to reason some ended up in the hands of… suspicious individuals.’ What they’re USING it for remains to be seen, but it’s definitely something to keep an eye on. In fact, maybe you SHOULD let Maple know…

Actually, were are the Dragon Balls? And… you find it a little odd that Fu’s not stalking them too, from what you’ve been told about the guy, this seems like something he might be interested in following up on. Or maybe he is? And what’s that presence you sensed earlier…? Agh, questions, questions…

Okay, okay. Izzy? Focus. You can handle this, heck you’re MEANT to handle this! You’re Earth’s new Mahou! You can, and in fact, SHOULD be the one handling things like this. Sensing out once more, you try to pinpoint that thing you’d sensed previously. It’s definitely some kind of magical artifact, and now you’ve got a bit better an idea of what’s going on. Seems there might be a couple things down there, much weaker presences, but something that’s not supposed to be there. It’s deep in the lower levels of the castle, hidden away carefully. Deliberately, almost.

Explaining what you sense to Pantea and Sachie, your partner actually decides to head towards it. ‘I’m starting to remember some stuff I was told about the last Mifan Tournaments. I’ve got a hunch now, but I’ll have to check to make sure.’

‘Stay in touch.’ Now… what about these two? ‘Sachie. Wanna prank ‘em?’

‘Girl I’d been waiting for you to ask for an hour now! Let’s!’

https://youtu.be/tCjIxCg1kUk

“Better hurry it up, Hado. Don’t know how long we got before they’re able to accomplish their goal.” Sala tells her partner.

“I know, I know, but we can’t just start rushing down the place. Remember the wizard’s mansion?”

She gives him a dismissive look. “You and I remember that mansion pretty differently. In fact, pretty sure I you turnin’ into a big ol’ cat from a wizard’s curse.”

“It happened ONE time!” he huffs a bit louder.

Oooh, an opening! Sachie stealthily sets a little maneki-neko good luck charm ahead of them, and you get it moving, the cat’s paw beckoning them closer. Sala and Hado take one good look at it and stop. “…Oi, was that always there?”

“Not… sure…” Hado mumbles, carefully sneaking around it. “I… guess Pilaf would have some lying around? Keep the good luck in here?”

They keep moving, and you and Sachie set a couple more along their path. That gets them nice and spooked. “Good luck my ass! Place is givin’ be the creeps! Yer sure that thing’s still workin’?”

“It is. Which… while it IS a little unsettling, it’s also probably a sign that we’re getting closer.”

“Rather be facin’ that pain in the ass Pazuzu again…” Sala growls lowly.

‘What’s a Pazuzu?’ Sachie questions.

‘Given track records? Some kind of demon, probably.’

‘That’s a silly name. Pazuuuuuzuuuuu.’

You force yourself not to laugh at that. Actually, you’ve got a great idea now. ‘Sachie, get back here, and be ready for multi-form.’ You Clothes Beam up a large, billowing and tattered bedsheet that’s made of a shimmering material that’s also slightly luminescent, then get her to start shambling towards the pair from behind, slow enough that it’s not something they’d immediately notice.

Sachie actually plays it perfectly, swaying from side to side as she walks. Hado and Sala finally notice something’s following them and turn around… and for added flair, Sachie actually seems to let out some kind of reddish aura to help emphasize the effect. “Come… hither… come… hither…” she calls to them in a low, eerie tone, swatting at the air like the cats were prior. You… swear it almost looks like she has sharpened her nails a bit as she does so.

“Move. MOVE.” Hado tells Sala, holding his hands out. “Stay BACK!” He lets out a flash of Light Magic that even you need to shield your eyes from, and now the two are running.

You’re unable to hold back the giggling now. ‘That was perfect, Sachie!’

‘I know, right? Oh that was FUN.’

‘Hey, girls? I’ve found our culprits.’ Pantea informs the two of you. ‘And I think I can take ‘em before they start anything.’

‘Hold tight for a bit, Pantea. Sachie and I are gonna confront these two.’ Okay. Time to ready THE GOATS. You get the Capsules out, handing a few to Sachie, and follow after the pair. The deeper you go, the more you start to notice some illusions taking shape ahead of the pair. Some kind of cyclops, a cow demon that looks... very vaguely familiar, and a flying monkey. Hado and Sala are actually able to dispel the illusions rather quickly thanks to their little trinket. You meanwhile get… the familiar presence of something you remember facing once before. You turn back and- oh THAT thing.

“IZUMI… MAHOGANY…” It’s that spider-snake demon you dealt with. Tch. Whatever, not even worth your time if it WERE real.

Sachie recognizes it as well, but you let her know it’s nothing to worry about. So she instead blows a raspberry at it as you dispel the illusion. Eventually the two of you sneak up on the pair, and Sachie dashes past them… and then stumbles a bit as a creature resembling a golden version of the flying monkey pokes up from the floor.

“Oi what the fu-?!” Sala blurts out, but she’s interrupted as the monster tries to get closer to her. “Shit!” You then notice her… start to use Fire Magic, huh?

A kunai strikes the back of the thing’s head… one attached to a Capsule, that opens into several goat pinatas. Hado blankly stares at the thing and lets out a flat “What.”

At the same time, you’ve tossed a few at them from behind, and Sachie actually activates several that she’d left before dashing past them. Goats now surround the two, thoroughly confusing them. Then they all explode into glitter, absolutely covering the pair and the golden flying monkey. Even the illusion seems confused by what just happen, and you and Sachie audibly giggle at this.

“Okay guys, we’ve had our fun here. But you two should know better than to be sneaking around like this after acting all suspicious earlier.” you tell them.

Sala gives you the grumpiest glare, simmering and about ready to let out flurry of curses, though the monkey recovers from the shock and tries to attack her. “Damn it!”

“Hey, we’re talking here!” You let out a burst of Light Magic and casually dispel the illusion. “There we go.”

“...Okay, now I know what it might look like,” Hado begins, dusting some of the glitter off of himself. “But we’re not here for any nefarious purposes, honest.”

“But we don’t need yer help, so bugger off!” Sala yells at you, shaking her fist.

Hado pinches the ridge of his nose, his two-toned blonde and dark blue hair swaying in the light. “Gotta work on your people skills.”

>A. Oh we figured, but you folks still set yourselves up for this. What if it weren’t a humble prankster like myself that noticed you?

“Oh, we figured.” you state assuredly. “But you folks kinda set this up on yourselves, bein’ all suspicious and everything. What if it wasn’t a humble prankster like myself or Sachie that came after ya? Noticed you doing things and chased after?” You cross your arms and lean forward. “Plus, if these illusions get any stronger, you might be facing enemies you can’t readily handle. So how about you tell us what’s going on before things get out of hand. Sound good?”

Sala grumbles and tries to dust the glitter out of her hair, and Hado exhales to calm himself. “All right. From the top then. Sala, Jaki, and myself are seeking out a certain artifact that’s fallen into the wrong hands. A crimson-red gem infused with an evil wizard’s essence, one that was laying the groundwork for a Destroyer cult, partnered with demonic creatures to aid him in this endeavor.”

“When was all this?” you question.

“Three years ago now, jus’ about.” Sala responds, still kinda pouting at you. “Were at first just tryin’ to get some treasure for ourselves, but that bastard ended up makin’ it personal. We dealt with ‘em handily, but gem vanished after we kicked his ass. Assumed it was destroyed or somethin’.”

Hado taps the Scouter. “Until we found evidence of it still around. Something’s been going around trying to activate it at a number of locations. Yahhoy, Ginger Town, a forested island way down south, an ancient pyramid, none of them were successful, but every time we got close, the goons of whatever was attempting to activate it would hold us off until they got away.”

“So while we’re yammerin’ up here, we’re wastin’ valuable time in stoppin’ those losers!” Sala emphasizes.

“Why here?” Sachie asks.

“Likely because some vanquished demonic presences are still lurking the area, refusing to pass on.” Hado answers, trying to make you walk and talk as he starts to move forward. “Sala’s got a point, though, we need to move.”

“Vanquished… demonic… presences…” you repeat slowly, trying to recall any that specifically might haunt the area here.

“Okaaaay, but this is like… the ABSOLUTE WORST place to do this?” the ninja schoolgirl points out. “I mean, are they just… not aware of who’s here?”

Hado turns to her and asks, “If you weren’t paying attention to US, would you have been aware of this going down?”

She raises a finger and opens her mouth, but slowly closes it and then points at him. “Okay, point. But say they succeed, then what? Fight their way through some of the literal strongest people on the planet? Hell, the universe!”

“Tch, ‘course not. They’d run like a buncha cowards.”

Looks like you’re almost there...

Well. Time to point out the obvious. “You know. You could have just… asked for help, or something. Just sayin’.”

Sala looks back at you. “Ey, this is our responsibility.”

You raise an eyebrow. “And have a far more difficult time against whatever these things are planning?”

“Coulda’ handled it without yer interruptions…” she grumbles.

“Is this really the only reason you two came to the tournament?” you ask next.

“Eh, nah, that Pilaf bloke caters well, and might be able to snag a couplea’-”

Hado elbows her in the side gently. “Bad habits creeping up again.” She pouts but says nothing more. “What she means to say is, we didn’t exactly know when this would all happen, but participating might have been a good way to bait ‘em out. Especially with a prize like the wish-granting orbs there.”

“Did you know the Dragon Balls were here already?” you inquire… and Hado just taps the Scouter again. Right. How many of those did aunt Maple leave laying around? ‘Pantea, we’re about ready. Demons around the area, yea?’

‘Yep. Some people dressed in robes, and a host of less savory types. There’s some purple mage with what I think are horns and a dragon staff, a pterodactyl guy, a blue demon with big horns and a goofy hat, a purple Makyan that’s waving around some kind of magic staff, a bovine one with big bat wings, old bearded wizardly type with small horns, someone who dressed like how Dabura was described but with a fashionista flair, an angry clown, and- …their leader is a guy named “Shane” that talks in surfer lingo.’ She’s doing her best to keep herself from laughing at that last one.

‘We’re here. You can start us off, just be careful for any cursed objects, debuffing spells, and the many, many illusions they’re using.’

You crowd around the entrance with Sachie, Sala, and Hado, finding exactly what Pantea described… but also something much more important. That source of ominous energy you were feeling prior. Sala sucks in air through her teeth. “Damn, ‘s gotten bigger.”

“What do you mean ‘bigger?’” Sachie remarks critically, trying to keep her voice down.

“I mean somethin’s happened to it, probably those jackasses trying to force it to revive the wizard asshole.” She keeps her eyes forward. “Hado, it’s no illusion, is it?”

“No, it’s the real deal.” he says grimly. “And… I’m starting to worry they’re not just trying to bring back their comrade.”

Was there ever a Yakra here? Oh yeeeaaaah, the thing at the first Mifan Tournament a while back. It died? Huh, more you know. Anyway! “Halt, Demons!” you call out, raising a hand up in the air, and begin to pose. “Whatever nefarious plot you’ve set in motion, it won’t come to pass. As Earth’s new Mahou, I WILL ensure your downfall, here and now! Now it’s time to face the mu-” One of Demons launches a Fireball at your face. It… doesn’t DO much, but. How dare. You stop, look it right in the eyes. It’s that pterodactyl guy. He seems to realize what he’s done too late, and looks at you with terror. “…Okay first of all, RUDE. Second of all, you’re first. HENSHIN!” You transform, then strike a pose. “Now, you, YOU. What’s the big idea, huh?”

The Demon gulps. “Y-you were just standing there, so-”

“So what?” You lean over him, hands on your hips. “What did you think that would do? Honestly! You lousy lot are-”

https://youtu.be/ZmZLgTb6OTY

The Bull Demon charges at you, stabbing at you with a pitchfork. You grab it with one hand and stop it, now visibly annoyed. “Gh! What are you all waiting for?! Don’t let the Mahou ruin our plans, GET HER!”

You’re now surrounded by the whole host of them flinging spells and attempting to thwack you with whatever they can, one even throwing a kitchen sink at your head. None of it is hurting you. It’s just very, very annoying.

“Need any help there?” Sala asks, smirking.

“No. No I don’t.” You blast out a surge of Light Magic through an Explosive Wave, enhanced so it vanquishes any illusions in the area, that knocks the Demons away. The area shimmers as the spooky-looking craggy area actually fades a bit, turning back into a more normal-looking area of the palace. “Now, if you’ll all-”

“Damn you, Mahou!” the Bull Demon roars, getting back up. Interrupting you. AGAIN. “I’ll have the last laugh! BEHOLD OUR POWER!” The trident in your hand morphs into a three-headed serpent. You just give it an irritated look, knowing it can’t hurt you, and watch as some other Demons start to change form, one of them even turning into a large, purple dragon.

And that is when Pantea dashes around the area, her aura sparking with electricity, and knocks each and every one of the morphed fiends down with a well-timed series of Wolf Fang Fist blows. Each Demon falls to the ground, and she gives you a thumb’s up. “Think that takes care of that.”

https://youtu.be/Z6fLGCVHhGk

Sala actually looks a bit more impressed by this. “Wow, ya beat ‘em all that quick? Damn, Knickers, yer not half bad.”

Pantea blinks at her and repeats “Knickers?” in a confused tone.

“Damn it… we were so close…” the Bull Demon grumbles in pain. You walk over, the serpent heads still hissing and snapping at you. “Mahou… so your damnable ilk truly does walk this world again…”

“Total… bummer zone…” the surfer cultist complains, Sachie having collected all the weaker members of the horde into one big pile, wrapping them up with a cutsey bow.

You bonk the Bull Demon with the serpent, knocking both out. “Okay, who wants to start talking? And I REALLY would rather there be no interrupting this time.” You spot the pterocactyl Demon trying to scoot away, pretending to be unconscious. “And hey, looks like we have a volunteer!” Sachie grabs him and drags him over to you.

“...H-h-hello.” he mumbles in terror.

“Okay, now, everybody? No one touches the crystal without any protection. Don’t want any curses or mind manipulation or shards of it creeping into one’s soul or anything of the like. We good on that?” you ask your allies.

“Oi, wasn’t born yesterday.” Sala grumbles.

Hado gets in closer, looking over the crystal. “Yeah… something’s definitely up with it. I’m gonna have Jaki get a look too.” He taps his Scouter again, soft beeps coming from it.

“Now, I believe there’s one more thing we need to address here.” You clear your throat. “FU, QUIT HIDING! I KNOW YOU’RE HERE!”

There’s a pregnant pause in the air… then you hear someone snacking on some kind of popcorn or hard candy. “Wow, you didn’t even sense me out! Impressive!”

Sala and Hado are taken aback as they see him appear, Sala taking a defensive stance. “Bloody hell! What’re you here for?!”

Fu munches on more snacks. “Watchin’ cool stuff go down, obviously! Knew it wouldn’t be limited to just the tournament matches.”

You give him a heavy-lidded stare, then shake your head and return your focus to the pterodactyl demon. “So, how about you start telling us what EXACTLY you were doing here, yeah? Come on. Spill the beans.”

He gulps, trying to scoot back a bit. “W-we were just trying to return our lost comrade to us! So what if we needed to gather some… energy from certain places. It was all to bring ‘em back!”

https://youtu.be/jbE2b9jqK9s

You look back at the crystal, and the eyes inside all… look right at you. Eugh. “Yeeeaaaah no, I don’t think that’s gonna cut it.” You cross your arms and glare. “You’re trying to bring something worse into the world, aren’t you?”

“Not worse! Better! An improvement of what came before!” he shouts indignantly.

Hado lets out a gasp. “This… thing is trying to combine several essences into one. Jaki says they might all have sacrificed themselves into it to form some kind of… gestalt.”

Pantea looks at it uneasily, and then notices the octagonal pedestal it’s placed on top of. She gulps, then telepathically notes to you, ‘Doesn’t that sound like Nazar?’

It… vaguely does. ‘So these jerks are trying to imitate them…’

“It might already be at the point of self-sustaining. Yeah, Izumi made the right call, it might attempt to influence any who get into contact with it.” He holds a hand up. “Might be better to destroy it.”

“Oh I wouldn’t do that here if I were you.” Fu warns. Oh now what…?

You pinch the ridge of your nose. “Fu. Please. Just… don’t make this difficult.”

“I’m not! I’m helping!” he pleads. “Destroying it here would be a baaaad idea. That’s helping!”

You resist the urge to run up and try to bonk him on the head with the serpent too. “Fu. Please.”

“Come on Izzy, think!” He points at the side of his head. “If you blow it up here, where’s all that built up energy gonna go?”

“So, what, we can’t smash it, can’t touch it, but we also can’t just leave it here.” Sachie notes.

Pantea holds a hand out, using Telekinesis to try and move it. And… she flinches a bit, but manages to move it. “Egh… this is… weird.”

Fu grins. “That’s smart, but do try to be careful. Its aura is a bit bigger than its physical form.”

You rub the side of your head. “Okay, okay, I… think I have an idea. We might be able to purify it somehow, right?”

Sitting cross-legged in the air, Fu tilts forward a bit. “Oh? You think you can?”

That doesn’t actually seem like a statement of doubt in how possible it might be, but rather in your own abilities. And now you’re going to DEFINITELY prove him wrong. But… hrmn. Maybe the difficulty is in moving it somewhere else. …Waaaaait a second. “I can purify it, yes. But, and I want you to pay close attention here, Fu!” You march up to him, pointing the unconscious serpent at him. “DON’T! Take it! …And you can help us with this.”

His face lights up. “Really?!”

Sala, Hado, and even Pantea seem to think this is a bad idea. “Izzy…” your partner warns.

“HOWEVER. I want you to know I’m gonna be asking Maple’s help with this. That’s my condition. That acceptable?”

Fu’s a little surprised, but grins. “Well, I guess that can work.”

“Being serious here, Fu. Trusting you with this.” You point at your eyes, and then at him, for emphasis. “Understand?”

He waves his hand dismissively. “Yeah, yeah, I getcha.”

Okay. Here goes. While Sachie, Hado, and Sala get all the gathered villains together for transport, you get into contact with Maple. ‘Sooooo. Auntie Maple. You been sensing what’s all been happening down here?’

‘I picked up on something going down. Now I’ve been able to get a clearer picture.’ she replies. ‘Need some help?’

‘Yeah kinda. Can you get to us?’

She answers by teleporting right next to you. Maple then sees the gathered demons and cultists, with your allies all grouping them up. She nods approvingly, but then turns her attention to the crystal, and Fu casually making it float over to him. He smiles and waves. Maple crosses her arms, eyes narrowed at him. “And where do you think you’re going with that?”

“Relaaaax, I’m not gonna take it! It’s much more interesting to see how it reacts to a form of purification.” he tells her calmly and casually. Though he then adds, “Besides, if I wanted to take it, I’d have done so already!”

You facepalm. “Not. Helping. Fu.”

“It’s totally helping!” he retorts, cheekily grinning as he floats over to you and Maple, crystal in hand, though keeping enough of a distance that it doesn’t start to make your skin crawl. At least, not more than it did before. The eyes twitch and fidget, looking around for a moment, before all focusing on Fu. “See? Helping!”

Maple shakes her head, but rolls with this. “Okay, we should get this a good distance away. Like… far, far away from Mifan kinds of away.”

“Do you have a place in mind?” you ask.

Maple thinks for a moment. “…Baba’s might be a good place. Or… well, I can try to sense out Yurin again, that might make things easier. Or we can fly until we’re in the middle of nowhere before we do this.”

Okay. Plan. Plan. What to do…? Aha! “Let’s bring it to Baba’s. Far enough away, and with someone who can help us out should things to south… buuuut just in case, think you can get Trip to head over too?”

“Reasonable.” After a beat, presumably to let them know what was coming, Maple looks over to Fu. “Would it be wrong to assume you can teleport as well?” He just grins cheekily. “Then follow along.” She places her hand on your shoulder and teleports off with you. The shift from the depths of a castle in Mifan to the daybreak in a desert is pretty drastic, but your eyes adjust quickly. Fu appears not a moment after.

“I really do hope you havAAAA!” Baba’s voice can be heard from behind you, quickly hiding behind her crystal ball. “THAT is what you’re dealing with?!” she exclaims in a panic.

“It’s fine, it’s fine.” Fu responds nonchalantly. “Look, I’m holding onto it! See? No need to worry your little head, Fortuneteller Baba.”

From the doorway you can spot her monster squad all peeking and looking at it nervously. Yeah, reasonable. Trip and Popo arrive not too long after too, with Trip much more focused and serious. “…It’s even stronger than you had said, Maple.” she notes, hand on her staff gripping tighter. “I do think I can seal it away if things go awry, but if any of you feel its influence start to creep up on you, I ask that you let me know at once.”

Baba frowned and looked into her crystal ball. “Hmmm… it appears that they are not completely merged just yet. It may be easiest to try and pick it apart at… well, ‘fracture lines’ so to speak.”

Ahhh, okay. “So just… sense where things are at their weakest, and push from there?” you question.

Baba nods. “Yes, but be quick about it. There is no telling how long it will remain that way.”

“Keep yourself secure. Prep any mental defenses you can muster.” Maple instructs, then letting out a barrier around the others. “I’ll be able to back you up if needed.”

“Don’t worry. I’ve got this in the bag.” You move closer, and you can feel the malice radiating off this thing. You focus your mind, ignoring the whispers that try to creep in. You hold your hands out, and start to focus on Light Magic as you charge your energy.

‘...Iiiiiiizzzzuuuuummmmiiii…’

‘We can… give you power…’

‘...Let us help you…’

‘WE MUST… BE COMPLETE…’

“It’s not going to work.” you say aloud. Each of the voices that you hear actually end up acting like focal points. Heh. Okay. Let’s purify this thing. And let’s do it in STYLE. Light fires out from your hands, hitting the crystal. It… visibly twitches, the eyes going crazy as the Light shines through the crystal. Heh, of course. It’s a CRYSTAL. It can refract light. At almost random points, jets of darkness spray out like a high-pressure fluid.

https://youtu.be/Dfb_n7wjb5k

The crystal SCREAMS at you in agony, as the light you let out pushes more and more of the gestalt presences apart. It keeps going until Light finally starts to jet out of it… and then it fractures and fragments, breaking apart. The remnants of the demons inside it, or at least what you might call their “minds,” are ripped away from one another, translucent forms of them briefly remaining before returning to the aether, hopefully to never be seen again.

There is still one thing that remains, a shadowy crimson mass that looks like it’s halfway between viscera and miasma trying to take shape. You shift the position of your hands. “Yeah, I don’t think so. FADE TO LIGHT!” You hammer it with Magic until it’s completely overwhelmed, and gone for good.

Fu just whistles in appreciation. “That was awesome! Haha, and the finishing one-liner, just excellent! Ooooh and I’ve got so much more data now…” He twirls his hand, and the now more normal ruby colored fragments swirl together. “Hmmm… yep, nothin’ left in there! …Caaaan I keep these though? Souvenir? Pleeeeease?”

You walk over to Fu, sensing the presence that was once there completely gone. You do a quick double-check, just in case, sensing them out. Yeah, won’t make a bit of difference who has them now. They’re inert. “Okay, Fu? We should give the majority over to Hado and Sala. Did kinda jump in on their whole deal… but agree to that, and you can have a little bit.”

He looks absolutely giddy. “Oooooh perfect! I think I’ll taaaake-”

“Ah ah ah, you wait until we’re back.” you warn him, waving your finger.

“Fine, fine.”

“Baba, Trip, you want any?” you ask next. “They’re safe now. Promise.”

“I… would rather not.” Trip says politely.

Baba though? “Eh, just a bit.” Fu floats one over to her, and she looks it over curiously.

“All right, all right, we’re heading back now.” Maple states, placing her hand on you and teleporting away.

The three of you appear back at the castle, finding Sala, Hado, Sachie, and Pantea having taken away the demons. Sala is at first worries at the sight of the shattered crystal, but realizes that there’s no lingering evil presence in it. “Well I’ll be, yer partner did it, Knickers.”

Pantea nods. “Heh, wasn’t any doubt tha- hey!”

“Here you guys go, you can figure out what to do with most of it. Though, mind letting some of us have a shard or two?” you question.

She hesitates at first, then Hado gently elbows her in the arm. “All right, all right. Thanks, really. Ya helped out quite a bit, ‘s only fair.”

Fu cheerily passes along a few shards to the gathered folks there. One for Sachie, one for Pantea, one for you, one for Maple, one for you, one for himself, and the rest for Sala and Hado. Maple seems to recognize the purified piece, but keeps it to herself. Sachie though is just absolutely giddy, though you hear her… whispering to someone? Hrm.

“I’m glad it all worked out, but still, next time, don’t hesitate to ask for help.” you tell Sala and Hado.

The blonde girl frowns at you, but relents with a sigh. “Yeah sure. Well, this has been a bit of a night… see ya lot tomorrow in the ring?”

You grin wide. “Hell yeah. Let’s give these folks a show to remember.”

She gives a thumb’s up. “See ya then, Izzy, Knickers.”

They head off, and you and Pantea walk together. “Oh, right, Izzy, what about this?” She holds in her hand… that serpent. Oh yeah. Hmm, what to do with it…?

Sorry yet again that this happened. Got it all cleared up now, at least.

You get a good night’s rest, and you feel all refreshed and ready to take on the world! You meet up with Pantea again, who also looks like she’s up for the challenges today. “Hey Izzy, how you feeling?”

“Absolutely great!” you cheer, the two of you now heading down to the waiting area together. “Maple and Acer as part of the day’s opening act though, that’s gonna be something.”

“Think Killa and Jewel have any interesting things to show off?” she questions.

“Doooo you want me to be honest?”

She ruffles your hair. “Be nice.”

Back with everyone, Pilaf addresses the crowds again. “Citizens of Mifan! Visitors from across the globe and stars! We are back with the Mifan Tag Tournament!” The crowds cheer loudly, almost deafening. Heh, they’re almost as fired up as the fighters are. “Today’s matches are as follows!

Maple and Acer vs. Killa and Jewel!

Launch and Shao vs. Chi-chi and Lazuli!

Chiaotzu and #19 vs. Caroni and Pirozhki!

Guldo and Recoome vs. Izumi and Pantea!

Hado and Sala vs. Mighty Mask and Pintar!

Sachie and Zarid vs. Cui and Soshiru!

Nappa and Krillin vs. Yajirobe and Tao!

And last but not least, Captain Chicken and #16 vs. Ledgic and Nox!”

You get up to one of the open windows and watch as the combatants walk towards the ring. Killa and Jewel are the first to be ready, as Maple and Acer do a little fistbump that leads into a team pose. You can hear the Ginyus cheer for them at that. Okay, might not be that big a surprise if the end up winning, but you do need to see what tricks they have up their sleeves.

“Fighters ready? BEGIN!”

https://youtu.be/H0T9oRiYTAc

Killa’s up first, and he gets into an aggressive boxing stance, jabbing in the air. You notice Ki surround his fists. Dad’s the one to face him, looking confident, but focused. So, what’s he gonna do this time? As Killa continues to jab in the air, more energy builds up around his fists. Is he gonna try for a Ki attack with them?

Acer motions for his opponent to come at him. Killa leaps upward, pulling a hand back… and then punching BACKWARD, releasing the built up Ki as a rocket to propel him down, managing to get the first hit in as he knees your dad in the face. Acer stumbles a bit, surprised by the tactic, and Killa attempts an uppercut. But it hits an afterimage, and dad’s already rolled away by the time he realizes it. A swift kick to the back of the head sends Killa flying, with him skirting face-first across the floor.

“You all right there Killa?” he asks, sounding genuine but probably only adding salt onto the wound.

He gets back on his feet, attempting a spinning kick at Acer. Dad dodges it, and even dodges Jewel jumping in and attempting a chop to the back of his neck. Acer then actually uses the multi-form to engage with both of them at the same time, focusing on avoiding Killa’s attacks with one, swerving and dodging and keeping him focused with distractions, while he’s much more aggressive with Jewel. Curiously, Jewel’s attempted counterattack actually seems to mix in flashes of light with every strike. Not blinding like the Solar Flare, but enough that it could easily distract a opponent. That’s pretty clever!

(cont.)
>>
>>5223557
Not enough to turn the tide, though. While Jewel does eventually back out of the ring, unable to distract Acer away from Killa, the other fighter’s getting worn out even attempting to keep up with your dad. And with his copy now freed up, dad’s able to outright overwhelm Killa. The tall fighter tries to back off with more… well, they’re technically “rocket punches” you guess… to propel him back and away from your dad, who has his copy merge back into himself.

And Maple jumps in, setting a barrier of Spirit Bits around him. Killa’s at first confused, but then dad forms a Ki sphere in his palm. Spirit Ball? He yells out, “FASTBALL!” Ahhhh. It collides with Maple’s barrier, and sends Killa right out of the ring!

“Aaaaand he’s outta here!” Maple cheers.

Jewel looks at his partner, mouth agape, as dad and Maple do a little victory dance. Well, one down! …You’re definitely gonna take some notes on this, too. Could use some good taunts and victory lines for your matches.

Dad decides to back out of combat, leaving Maple to take on Jewel. To his credit, he’s not backing down, but… yeah, not exactly expecting a surprise turn-around here. Jewel does show off some tricky skills, with Afterimages that seem to shine brightly as they’re hit. Problem is, Maple’s been wearing sunglasses thick enough to block a Solar Flare. And with her Spirit Bits hounding him, there’s little he can really do.

Though, Maple also seems to be using this moment to instruct and train him a bit, giving suggestions and comments on how to improve. You pay close attention to both how Jewel’s been fighting, and the suggestions Maple’s given to him, what with ideas like delayed afterimages, trying to pair it with Multi-Form, and a focus on speed to help keep him out of reach of his foes. In the end, though, he’s tossed out of the ring with ease.

“And that settles it! MAPLE AND ACER ADVANCE TO THE NEXT ROUND!” Pilaf declares.

Your aunt spins around and strikes a pose, little sparks from her aura jetting out. “Didn’t shine bright enough, Jewel! Better luck next time!”

“Can’t say the result surprises me, but that was still an interesting match.” Pantea tells you.

Hmm… next up is mom and Lazuli against Launch and Shao. You can already hear Baozi cheering for the latter two up from near Pilaf. Krillin and his wife fist bump before she starts to walk off.

“Good luck out there, mom! Whoop some butt!” you cheer.

“Language.” she reminds you.

“Hey, I said butt, not ass!” …Wait, shit.

Chi-chi just softly laughs, giving you a pat on the head. “I know, Izzy. Still.”

You wave your hand. “Yeah yeah. Still, best of luck out there!”

And so, she and Lazuli head into the ring. This will be an interesting fight. And… hrmm. ‘Hey, Pantea, got an idea we can try while we observe the fight.’

‘I’m listening.’ she responds.

‘Image training! We meditate a bit as we watch, trying to see how we’d face each of the opponents.’

She smiles as she looks forward. ‘That’s actually a great idea! Ready when you are.’

Both pairs enter the ring. They do seem more evenly matched than the previous fight. Come to think of it, you… actually haven’t seen how Lazuli and Shao fight all that much. So this will be pretty interesting to see. Mom though? You know her very well, and you do at least know Launch’s style better than the other two. This should prove very enlightening.

“Fighters ready? BEGIN!” Pilaf announces.

https://youtu.be/yRNw-0jQuFE

You and Pantea both focus, watching the movements of the fighters carefully. Thankfully, Lazuli and Shao are actually up first, so you’ve got some new stuff to watch. Lazuli’s interesting. She’s quick and aggressive, but also not a slouch when it comes to defenses. You even see her form a shell-like barrier out of Ki to block a few incoming blows from Shao, holding it in front of her with both hands in… a very familiar pose. Wait, is she-?

“KAMEHAMEHA!” Lazuli quickly fires a beam into the turtle shell shield, which amplifies the attack and lets out a much bigger beam than Shao was expecting.

But while the attack hits, she’s able to burst up Kaio-ken to minimize the damage. Shao then goes on the offensive, with Lazuli once more using the turtle shell shield to block the barrage of crane strikes Shao unleashes at her. However, you notice there’s not actually that much power behind them. Aha, it’s a distraction!

Launch bursts into the ring, her aura sparking around her, as she yells out “Geist Magnum!” and hits Lazuli right in the back. With her caught off-guard, Shao’s attacks are able to hit true, doing quite a bit of damage on her. Okay, now you think you get their strategy. Shao’s focus is on creating openings for Launch to exploit. Even as your mom gets in to try and help, the pair actually switch focus to her, Launch showing a good deal more power in her attacks while Shao nimbly creates openings. Mom chants something under her breath and lets out an Explosive Wave to force them back, healing Lazuli up, and even taking a couple hits to shield her.

‘So, this is very much another Turtle vs. Crane match.’ Pantea notes to you. ‘Just in a much more literal sense of the words.’

‘Yeah, even if Shao and Launch can do some heavy damage, if mom and Lazuli can tank the hits and recover, the stamina advantage will be theirs.’ You close your eyes, imagining fighting Launch and Shao first. You think you might be able to match Launch in strength, knowing she’s got a pretty significant advantage with her… Super Human whatever that is… but you also can see Pantea being the one to take her on. Won’t have to rely on as much of your Mahou stuff just yet that way, and that can leave you open to deal with Shao.

So, where Shao might try to create openings for Launch to exploit, you would keep her at bay, forcing her back and probably setting up your own openings for Pantea. Magic’s going to be a pretty big advantage in this, but still, don’t need to pull out your best just yet. And… oooh, you could use the Hero’s Barrier to create some counters that’ll keep her guessing! That’s it, and it gives Pantea a chance to deal with Launch unobstructed!

Mom and Lazuli though, that’s a bit more tricky. Mom’s definitely already using the Eight Paths thing, so you have to watch out for sudden power boosts, defensive buffs, and just generally a lot of stuff that’ll make them last longer, especially with her able to heal up Lazuli. Might be best to focus on her first, then, as while you’re sure Lazuli’s got plenty of other tricks, she’ll also be the one you and Pantea can handle better. And in all honesty, you think you should be the one facing off against mom anyway. You know her best, and while she may know you best, it’s just going to make things easier. Maybe… use some of dad’s skills against her? Oh, oh, switch things up! Keep her guessing, and wait for her to make a mistake! Then bam! You’ll be able to take her out easily!

Back with the fight, they still look pretty even, though Launch and Shao honestly seem to have the better coordination. Shao switches out, and Launch uses both overwhelming power and an unrelenting assault to eat away at Lazuli’s defenses. Mom keeps jumping in very quickly to keep her partner’s stamina up, and then jumping back out to avoid Launch’s attacks. But… that’s when she slips up. Shao jumps in as well, letting out a barrage of Dodonpas that, while not doing too much damage, keeps her from upping Lazuli’s defenses again.

Shao then places her hands together, and Launch does the same, though while Launch is charging up a Kamehameha, Shao? “GALICK GUN!”

As the two beams come together, purple and blue spiraling forward, and knock your mom down, you see Vegeta give a little fist bump in the air. “Yeah! That’s it! That’s how you do it!” he cheers. He… looks genuinely proud of her for that. Vegeta then realizes everyone is kinda staring at him, and in a flustered huff demands, “Keep your eyes on the fight!”

You can hear Peppa giggling, while Tien just smiles approvingly at the Saiyan prince. Goku doesn’t really understand why Vegeta got so flustered, commenting that it’s reasonable to cheer for one’s wife like that. Vegeta just grumbles more. Hehehehe.

Though, as you look back, mom’s still down, and struggling to get up. Lazuli’s tried to reach her, but Launch and Shao keep her at bay. Dad seems a little worried, calling for her to get up…

>A. Come on mom! You’re a former Mifan champ! You gonna go down in the first round like this?!

You keep focusing on image training, watching carefully. ‘Pantea, if we face something like that, might we also work in a Tag-Team Kamehameha? Put some more power into it, maybe spice it up with some Magic?’

‘Perhaps. Something like the Lunar Siren could also give us a good boost… or maybe… well, here’s an idea…’

https://youtu.be/6_-Zlx8j8M4

You imagine Launch and Shao firing off such a combo, and you know you can hold off an attack like that. However, Pantea has another idea, sending images of you standing in front of her… aaaah, with the Spirit Bits out! Amplify! But what’s she doing? …Oh, she’s got her own out. You get the mental image of her combining them together into two massive energy structures on the sides of her arms. Her aura also seems to be feeding into them. As you launch your Kamehameha forward, the energy structures fire from either side of you as well, a trio of massive beams hitting the Amplify gate and completely overwhelming your foes!

‘We haven’t gotten many chances to test that out, but with the METEOR mode Spirit Bits, we can easily pull something like that off.’ she explains, sounding pretty pleased with herself. ‘Issue is, having them out requires a LOT of focus, so I’m not able to move around as much as I like with them.’

‘I might be able to help then, if you do need to move around. Heck, you could even just rest on the shoulders of my Mahou Knight form and blast away.’ you inform her confidently. ‘…Actually that might be an issue, the more I think about it. We’re GREAT with our transformations, our Magic, our skills, and while you’re definitely one of the strongest ones here… simple fisticuffs might be a bit more tricky for us.’

As if on cue, you see mom manage to get back up, but Shao is already up close and putting more pressure on her, and even with Launch back out of combat, it’s not looking good for mom. She keeps trying to recover and restore her stamina, but this focus on it just doesn’t let her up. Even as she defends herself, Shao’s able to exploit the prior damage to just keep her off-guard. And right as Lazuli tries to help, Shao knocks your mom into the air, and then axe kicks her at the ground, just in time to block an attack from Lazuli. Yeah… mom’s down for the count now.

You and Pantea quickly think on how you might counter that. Honestly… Pantea seems the better choice. She’s got not just years of experience on you, but more actual training with conventional martial arts. It’s not that you’re BAD either, but you have shortcomings that others might be able to exploit. So, there’s the plan. You let Pantea deal with Shao, supporting her where needed. You also try to see yourself mirroring her movements when the two of you need to attack together. Not… the easiest thing, but you actually manage to do it! Yeah, this works! You can see yourselves taking Shao down, and that just leaves Launch…

Though back with the fight, you see that as Shao and Launch get ready for another combo… Lazuli holds a hand up. “All right. We’re done.” she declares, stopping the two. Lazuli goes to help Chi-chi up. “Can’t beat you both on my own. Sorry Chi-chi.”

Mom lets out a pained laugh. “H-heh… nice… nice try… huh?”

Oh. Hrmn. Guess that’s it.

“That’s an admission of defeat from Lazuli! LAUNCH AND SHAO ADVANCE TO THE NEXT ROUND!” Pilaf declares.

Dad and Maple go to help mom recover. You next see 19 and Chiaotzu talking a bit as they head towards the ring. Well, next round’s coming up…

As you walk towards mom, you first check with 19. “Hey! 19! Good luck with your match… though I doubt you and Chiaotzu need it, of course. You two got this in the bag!” You hold your hand out for a high-five.

“Thank you, Izumi. I will look forward to facing you today. But I must warn you, Chiaotzu and I are definitely ready for you and Pantea.” she tells you calmly but confidently, nodding at her partner. He just smiles and nods back, and she finally gives you the high-five you were waiting for. Oooh, she’s got some fire in her today.

Next up you head over to mom, who’s been healed up pretty well, but she seems a bit down. “Well, there goes our chance…”

“I’m sorry.” Lazuli tells her. “I should have jumped in sooner.”

“No, no, the moment I took that combined attack, we were on borrowed time.” mom responds. “Guess we just didn’t have the skills needed to overcome their teamwork.”

“You don’t seem particularly sad about it, though.” you note.

Mom smiles kindly. “I do wish we could have won, but, our opponents put in a great fight. Besides, I made Mifan Champ once before, but the competition keeps getting tougher.”

Maple gently taps mom’s shoulder with her fist. “Hey, Acer and I are still in this. We’ll be doing this for you too, Chi-Chi.”

“You’ll have to get through me and Pantea first!” you declare, brimming with confidence. “And I see you over there, cous! Don’t think you and Keli can rest easy!”

Ahh you’re all fired up now! Should get some snacks for the next match. You grab a few things for yourself and Pantea, getting beside her as you see the next pair ready for their match. Hmm. Might be over quick, but still could prove interesting to see what they’ll pull off…

‘Pantea, how about some more image training?’ you ask as you munch down on your snacks. ‘Oh, also, let’s try to see how some other fighters might face the current combatants. Think that might be possible?’

She seems surprised with the suggestion. ‘Huh… maybe that could work. Let’s give it a try, then!’

https://youtu.be/MTvY1x_nRLM

It’s Chiaotzu up first, and the larger of the two foes takes the stage with him. Pirozhki makes sure his elephant mask is nicely fit and flexes a bit, then charges forward at the smaller fighter. Chiaotzu takes his stance… and uses telekinesis to flip the man over him and right into the floor. Caroni to his credit actually uses this as a chance for an attack of opportunity, dashing in and calling out, “EAGLE KICK!” Chiaotzu actually has to block the incoming blows, which allows Pirozhki to get back up and charge him again.

“Together as one!” he roars.

“Elephant and swallow!” Caroni continues.

The pair attempt a pincer move, from above and below, and… Chiaotzu avoids them with ease. Yyyyyep. Saw that coming. You notice Mark trying to cheer the two men on, but they’re just out of their league against Chiaotzu. Especially with that telekinesis…

Hrmn. That could prove tricky if you try to fight him. Looking around at the combatants for a bit, you see that none of them are particularly surprised by what’s going on, but among those that are still fighting, well… Maple and Acer have telekinesis of their own, and whatever he might try to throw at them, they can counter. Shao and Launch are also familiar, and might try to hit him from afar if he uses any of that. Guldo also has telekinesis, if you remember correctly, so they might try to target Recoome first. Oh, Hado and Sala! You saw how they fight a bit, and their focus on Magic might actually give them a chance, especially if Hado keeps at a distance. Sachie and Zarid? Sachie has lots of her ninja skills to rely on, including Multi-Form, so she can give him the run-around, while Zarid can probably hit him with a surprise attack. Nappa and Krillin… well, Krillin would be the one to have to take him, even if Nappa has the power and defenses to protest himself from anything Chiaotzu can throw at him. Tao and Yajirobe… don’t know them too well, but Tao would be the one to fight Chiaotzu if they were up against one another. 16 is rather tanky, but you don’t know how his partner operates, so lot of guesswork there.

Which leaves Ledgic and Nox. You’ve got an idea on how Ledgic fights, you’ve heard plenty about it, but Nox is… an anomaly. You get a feeling of him being familiar somehow… and in spite of his suppressed Ki, you can almost swear it’s that of a Demon’s. Perhaps even like… Mira? No, couldn’t be. Towa would rub it in all your faces.

Which leaves you and Pantea. Hmmm… you’ve both got lots of options, really. Magic, ranged attacks, speed, though the more you think on it the more you realize how dangerous 19 might with Chiaotzu as… well, bait, almost. She can absorb Ki, even Magic, and is a bit of a powerhouse on her own. She could easily trip one of you up if you focus too much on taking down Chiaotzu. As you and Pantea focus and meditate on this, you think you have a strategy that’d work. You can take Chiaotzu down while she holds off 19, even if that might need to be literal. Ranged attacks, Magic, heck you could even stand to brush up on your physical skills to face him. And once he’s down, 19 doesn’t have a way to easily drain your strength!

…And as you think that, you notice her getting in the ring, catching both opponents’ fists as they get close to Chiaotzu again. She knocks them together, then Chaiotzu fires off a freezing Dodonpa that encases them both in ice. Long enough for them to get hit with a time-out. Gotta watch out for that, too.

“Caroni and Pirozhki have been in the ring for too long! CHIAOTZU AND #19 ADVANCE TO THE NEXT ROUND!” Pilaf declares.

“That was over pretty quick.” Pantea notes.

“Yeah, didn’t expect this to be a long one. They’re just that much better, especially together.” you tell her. Welp. Your match is next.

You walk over to 19 as she heads back, grinning at her. “Heh, knew it’d be a cakewalk for ya, but still, great job on winning your first match!” You offer a high-five for her, and she takes it. “Still, be ready for us next round, because I still want a rematch with ya.”

She nods. “I shall look forward to it. Best of luck with your match.”

You also telepathically ask Chiaotzu, ‘Say, any hints at facing Guldo?’

‘If you can see his Time Stop coming, do something to keep him from getting to you. If he’s using it defensively, try for a pincer movement, one he won’t see coming.’ he responds, then gives you a nod.

‘Thanks!’ Okay, time to get going. As you and Pantea walk into the ring, you casually talk with Guldo and Recoome. “So guys, you two ready for this match? Got any new poses you want to use in it?”

“Yeah! We workshop’d them with the Captain last night. Might even be good enough to add to some of the whole Force’s poses!” Recoome tells you cheerfully.

“We’re in to win this too.” Pantea says with confidence. “So we’ll make sure to give it our all.”

“Yeah! Let’s make this match a fun one!” Though once more, telepathically, you ask Guldo, ‘Say, if we win, mind giving us some pointers on facing Chiaotzu?’

‘Hmmmm… biiiiig if. But yeah, I definitely can.’

‘Thanks!’ You and Pantea get ready as you both get into the ring. Guldo and Recoome start off with a simpler team pose, but one that does look pretty nice.

Okay, now, how to go about this?

>A. Pantea, you start things off, I’ll back you up

You start to chuckle. Peppa had her fun yesterday. Your turn to have some of yours today. “All right then. Pantea. I believe we should give these folks a PROPER introduction.” You telepathically ask her ‘Follow my lead’ and share exactly what you’re about to do.

She’s stone-faced, but you can tell she’s trying not to laugh. ‘All right. Start things off.’

https://youtu.be/p09hhXbsB9c

You snap your fingers, and Clothes Beam yourself into what can best be described as a “villainous prince” outfit. Pantea does the same, opting for something bordering more on “evil princess” type gown.

“PREPARE FOR TROUBLE!” you begin.

“And make it double!” Pantea adds.

“To protect the world from devastation!”

“To unite all peoples within our nation!”

“To denounce the evils of truth and love!”

“To extend our reach to the stars above!”

“IZZY!” You twirl your partner with one hand… which should look awkward given the height difference, yet you make it work.

“PANTEA!” She spins elegantly and lands on your arm.

“Team Mahou blast off at the speed of light!” You strike a pose, pointing at the Ginyus.

“Surrender now, or prepare to fight!” Pantea mirrors you expertly.

You even top it off with a tiny Icarus plush that coos softly, then adds “That’s right!”

There’s a pause of silence. It’s broken by the sound of Peppa laughing over in the waiting area. The Ginyus stare at you, then clap together. “Bravo! Braaaavo! That might even put a challenge to some of the ones Maple’s shown off!”

Yeah, you rule. Okay, time to fight. “Guldo! Come on, let’s give these people a good show!” you declare, singling out the little green four-eyed alien.

“R-right! Okay, I’ll show you just what I can do!”

Pilaf clears his throat. “Ahem! Well, fighters ready? BEGIN!”

You keep back a bit, sticking to defense. Guldo tries to move you with telekinesis, but you just counter with your own telekinesis to keep yourself free. You then set things up so you’ve got the Hero’s Barrier around you, enhanced with Shadow Magic. You see Guldo… somehow teleport around the area. Crap, there it is. He’s using the time stop things. Okay, bait him to get closer. Watch the timing. You spin around and drop the barrier briefly to try and toss him with telekinesis, and he stops time again, but right as he gets close… bam! Got him!

Guldo flinches as some of his strength is sapped away, and now he’s open! Sending out the Spirit Bits to harass him, you ready a Magic spell, and once you’re ready? “GLACIER SURGE!” You blast the alien with freezing water and encase him in ice! Got ‘em!

“Oh no you don’t!” Recoome jumps into the ring and goes after you.

“Oh no you don’t!” You jump in and block Recoome’s attack, delivering a counter with a knee to the gut and a grapple around the waist, lifting him up and driving him into the floor head-first! Oh yeah! You next back away and get closer to Guldo, firing a few Ki blasts as he tries to get back up. ‘Pantea, get ‘em while he’s distracted!’

He is able to block the blasts, then builds up Ki. “RECOOOOME! ERASER G-ACK!” Pantea knees him in the back of the head and flips back, leaving him wide open for you. You infuse a Ki blast with Wind Magic and knock him back! Oh yeah! You do a little jump in the air…

And feel yourself slammed into the ground. Ow. What? How? …Oh. You see that Guldo’s still aware. Crap, he can use telekinesis in that huh? Well that was a mistake, because now you’re aware of him. You dash up with Pantea and the two of you deliver a mirrored left/right hook that forces him away. Recoome is now completely focused on the two of you, and having trouble keeping up. He keeps this up for a bit more, but realizes just in time that he’s been in too long, and hops out of combat to try and catch his breath.

You and Pantea high-five, and she moves out too. Which means it’s you and Guldo again, and… he’s trying to move his frozen form, still attempting to get free.

You casually walk over to Guldo as he tries to get loose. “Aaaand where do you think you’re going?” Some of the ice breaks off, and it looks like he’s gonna try to use telekinesis against you again. Oh no he doesn’t. You pick up the ice-encased alien and hold him overhead, getting ready to toss him out of the ring. You actually notice the ice crack a bit more, but you’re not worrying. Just gotta- oh! Whoop! Loose tiles! Haha, sneaky, Guldo, but you’re too clever to fall for a trap like that. Now just gotta toss- “UWAH!”

You faceplant. You… you slipped on some of the ice on the floor. You slipped. On some ice on the floor. OF ALL THINGS. Gah! Damn it Izzy! HOW? How did you-

You look up and blink. There’s the ice. But where’s the Guldo? You jump back up and notice him sneaking away from you. “HEY! WHERE DO YOU THINK YOU’RE-?!” You land, and slip again. Last Tournament, it was fake lava that was your mortal enemy. This one? It is ice, and the ice is your fault. You’re going to need to change strategy now.

Huh, so Guldo doesn't go into a feedback loop of thoughts upon thoughts for an eternity of but a single moment in time when forced to hold his breath? Well alright then, would be bad if he died.

So, the rest of y'all, may I interest you in... Ballet Battle?

I think it's highly likely that a Tiger Mom like Chi-Chi put Izzy in classes, and they're all about keeping your balance even on your tip-toes. I think it'd be a good match for ICE THE FLOOR.

Furthermore, I think the Angel Leotard would be a really good outfit in this context! https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/dragonquest/images/0/01/Bianca_1.png/revision/latest?cb=20200903200955

Okay. You’re a little miffed now. But you know what? YOU KNOW WHAT? You’ve got an idea. Hehahahaha. Oh it’s a great one. After all, if Kuriza could do it, so can you! You’re gonna ICE THE FLOOR! You leap up into the air and some Ice Magic, then punch down on the floor and send out a freezing shockwave across it. You do see that Guldo’s avoided the attack again, and Recoome’s entered into combat once more, but he doesn’t know what he’s getting into.

Recoome attempts to move across the ice like some kind of figure skater, but once he closes in, you show him that you’ve got a different game you’re playing right now. ICE HOCKEY. As you pull your fist up, you leave a little “puck” of ice on the floor. “RECOOOOOOME KI-!” You create a hockey stick out of ice and thwack the puck at him, hitting him right in the gut and causing him to fall over. Hah! Now he’s the one who faceplanted!

Recoome tries to get up and grapple you after sliding close, but you hold him off with the frozen stick. ‘Izzy, get him out in the open!’ Pantea calls out to you.

Heh, easy enough. You smack him in the left side of the head with the ice hockey stick, hard enough to shatter it across his face, and then deliver a strong right hook that pushes him back. “Gaah… that’s some tricky ice tricks you’ve got there, but I’ve helped Lord Kuriza train for this kinda’ thing! You’ll have to do better than that!”

“Then let’s turn up the heat!” Pantea bolts in, flying across the ice with Fire Magic blazing in the palm of her hand, a circle behind her like a burning halo. “BURNING…!” She hits him in the solar plexus with her palm. “CRUSHER!” Pantea then lifts him overhead and lets out an eruption of flames.

Recoome is then tossed down on the ice, groaning in pain as he slides across it slowly. Oooh, he might not be getting back up from that for a while.

>A. Keep Guldo from helping him! Pantea’s got ‘em covered on her own, you need to focus on Guldo!

Gah, sorry, passed out.

You notice Guldo try to move in again, and you immediately call him out. “Hey! Don’t think we don’t see you there!”

“Gah!” He… vanishes again, but you immediately see where he’s ran off to.

“Oh CHILL out.” you remark cheekily, floating towards him. “Or else you’ll end up with the COLD shoulder. Though I guess we can’t afford to COOL our heels just yet, we’re skating on some THIN ICE.” Guldo is now looking at you with all four eyes, confused. You raise up a hand and twirl a finger in the air, an icy frost falling from the tip. “Better FREEZE out any retaliation before we get ICE-olated from one another. Pantea! Let’s teach these interlopers that those who seek to CHILL our passion and put our victory on ICE are SNOW problem to us!”

Guldo is less than amused now. Even worse because he definitely found some of those funny. “…Y’done ye-?”

“Ice.” you breathe out coolly, taking a chilling pose.

Guldo throws a snowball at your face with telekinesis.

Pantea meanwhile got so distracted by those puns that Recoome managed to scoot out of combat, or at least got moved there. But, Guldo’s still in the ring. And he’s distracted! As Guldo is about to toss another snowball at you, her Spirit Bits surround him and lock him in a barrier, with the snow bouncing off the inside and hitting HIM in the face instead! And while he’s both trapped and distracted, Pantea finally flings him out of the ring!

GULDO IS DOWN!

“You doing okay there?” Pantea asks you.

You brush off the last bits of snow. “I’m cool, I’m cool.”

Well, giving you suggestions on how to make a fight the best it can be may as well be pissing in the wind, so no, I never have fun trying to work with you. I can give the most promising scheme, and work and work to refine it till it's gleaming, then it's left to your execution where it's fashioned into a bedpan. You never tell me what you like about something that interests you, you never ask what I think are the most important parts of a suggestion before moving forward with it and leaving me dissatisfied, you never answer a yes or no question in the only two acceptable ways, and you never admit fault when your shit's called out, like when you ignored the story and votes to give Peppa a skill she didn't have and then you and your attack dogs reported me for saying such.

Can you go write a book or something? I promise I'll buy and read it when you get it done, but stop with this charade of a collaborative story.

All right. You think you’re done here. You clap your hands together. “Hey, Pantea? We’re in the home stretch now. You can handle Recoome, right?”

“I mean sure, if you want me to go two for two.” she replies with a cheeky grin.

The large red haired man finally gets up, looking mighty miffed. He gets into the ring, charging his Ki. And yet you kinda ignore it, floating back confidently and closing your eyes. “Hey, just means I can try to get ‘em both next round. Let this be a CHILLING reminder of the kind of-”

“RECOOME KICK!”

You get knee’d in the gut and end up knocked to the floor, sliding across the ice. You’re not all that injured, you didn’t have your guard down completely but… ow. Your pride. You skirt just out of combat, crossing your arms as you do.

“Toh! Gotcha!” Recoome triumphantly declares, striking a pose.

https://youtu.be/CPSqIyhIr1g

“Ahem.” Pantea speaks up, her aura flaring up around her, one hand sparking with energy, charging up power.

He holds his pose for a moment. “...Oh yeah, right.”

Recoome tries to spin around and launch a Ki blast in retaliation, even following it with a leap in the air as he attempts to hit her with a hammer blow. Pantea just catches the Ki attack with her free hand, then aims upward with her charging attack, firing it off and hitting Recoome straight-on, which even stuns him for a moment, following it up with her tossing his own Ki blast right back at him for good measure.

Pantea turns her back to him as Recoome hits the ground again, and this time it’s for the count. She strikes a victory pose, grinning wide.

“...Nine! …TEN! THAT’S IT, RECOOME IS DOWN FOR SURE NOW! LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, PANTEA AND IZUMI ADVANCE TO THE NEXT ROUND!” Pilaf declares to the cheering crowds.

You still lay there for a moment, arms still crossed, as she comes to help you up. “You doing okay there?” she asks, offering you a hand.

“Yeah, I’m just chillin’.” you respond, stonefaced.

She giggles a little. “Well, those puns were COOL enough to get us through Guldo.”

Before walking back, you move to help Recoome up next, helping him walk out of the ring. Guldo’s a little surprised, but you just give him a thumb’s up. “Good match, guys. And hey, no hard feelings, right? Had to play things up for the crowds, y’ know?”

Guldo lets out a quiet “Ohh…” He then nods. “Of course, of course.”

Recoome gives you a thumbs up through a pained groan. Okay, better fix that. You heal him a bit too, get him back on his feet. There we go! Pantea meanwhile heats the ring to melt the ice before heading back with you. As you walk, you also telepathically ask Guldo, ‘Hey there! So… pointers for dealing with Chiaotzu, right?’

‘Oh yeah! Yeah yeah yeah. So, what you really need to look out for with ‘em is something we kinda worked on together a while back. Never got it to work as well myself, but he’s definitely perfected it by now.’

Well that’s got your attention. ‘Oh?’

‘Energy Backfires. You try to overwhelm him with beams or blasts? Some of those won’t leave your hand, and if you try to force it… bam! You hurt yourself in the process. It can happen suddenly, too, so be careful.’

Ahhh… that’s actually pretty creative. ‘Any tells to it?’

‘Uses a good amount more focus than normal, though again, it can happen suddenly. If he ever really starts looking focused, stop blasting immediately.’

‘Gotcha, gotcha.’ Okay, you’re more prepared for this now. Back in the waiting area, you spot Hado and Sala getting ready. “Hey guys! Best of luck in your match today.”

“Luck’s my middle name.” Sala declares confidently. “Not that I need it, of course.”

“Well, still, I’d say keep your eyes open. Your foes don’t feel too threatening, but that doesn’t mean you should let your guard down.” you point out. “Pintar probably has a good amount of muscle mass, but I’d bet he has some tricks up his sleeves… well, wristbands.”

“I did sense a small bit of Magic around him earlier.” Hado comments quietly. “So we should take the warning seriously.”

“Yeah, yeah.” Sala waves her hand dismissively. “Betcha we’ll end this even quicker than you and Knickers did in your match.”

Pantea gives her a look. “Again with the nickname…”

“Still, we’ll take your advice.” Hado states, then elbows Sala gently. “Right?”

“Riiiiiight…” And off they go.

You notice Pantea also giving you a bit of a look. “…What?”

She smiles. “You and Sala seem a little similar, you know.”

With a pout, you point at her and go, “And what’s that supposed to mean, ‘Knickers?’”

“Hah, funny.”

Bah, whatever. You’re gonna sweep this competition, a few flukes are not gonna put a damper on ya yet!

With Sala and Hado in the ring, you see Pintar look down his nose at the pair, chuckling dismissively. “Hahahaha! You newbies don’t seem like much. You sure you want to face us?”

Mighty Mask simply looks over them, staying quiet. You get the impression that he might actually be the more competent of the pair. Eh, still, don’t know if there’s much to worry about for Sala and Hado. Should you keep up what you’ve been doing with Pantea, image train to see how you two would face the combatants? Hmm. Oh, you know what to do! ‘Pantea, gonna multitask for a moment. Wanna do any more image training? Also, want any grub?’

‘Grub does sound good. And yeah, I’m up for that.’

‘Great! I’ll get ya somethin’.’ You use Multiform and, while one of you heads towards the buffet, the other stays with Pantea, observing the match. Though honestly you take it kinda casually, seeing how Sala and Pintar begin their match. You do notice that Hado was right, and the large man does seem to have some Magical abilities, because he spits out a jet of fire from his mouth. Sala scrambles to dodge it at first, with the fire heating the floor considerably and getting her to run from it. However, she eventually recovers and… hits him with an MP Buster! Ah! Interesting!

Now all he’s exhaling is some bad breath, and Sala takes the advantage of that with a quick dash around him, kneeing him in the back of the head. Pintar hits the floor in front of him… and lets out a yelp of pain, bellyflopping on the heated tiles. As he tries to get back up, Sala grabs him by the back of his vest and flings him outward. Pintar’s caught by Mighty Mask, who gives him a nod and stands beside him.

You, meanwhile, are looking over the buffet with your copy and getting a plate of stuff ready. Mongolian Barbecue, with some nice dishes ready! Oooh, and there’s some rice pilaf, and… oooooh gyros! You start to pile some on and- Hey! Someone’s taking that gyro! Oh. “Saw that first, Peppa.” you tell her with a narrowed glare.

“Hm? Oh, does it have your name on it?” she responds cheekily. You use telekinesis to etch your name onto the bread. She looks at it, rolls her eyes, and laughs as she hands it over to you. “You’re silly, cous.”

“I’m hungry is what I am.” you retort, setting it on the plate.

“Well, one match down. How do you feel about it?” she asks, getting another gyro and doing what you did to etch her name onto it. Peppa then has it kinda march in the air towards her plate.

“I feel absolutely great.” you state adamantly. “Even more prepared for the matches to come.”

“All right, but try not to let the showboating get in the way of victory. Else you’ll find your ambitions…” Peppa grins. “Put on ice.” She giggles and runs off and ooooh she’s gonna get it tomorrow. You shake a fork at her and head back to Pantea with two full plates.

As you were loading up on food, you were also picturing how you’d face Hado and Sala. The MP Buster can definitely put a damper on your skills, and if she has access to it, it’s entirely reasonable to assume Hado can do it too. While Mighty Mask and Pintar attempt to rush her together with a combo attack, Hado actually jumps in and casts a spell that boosts her defenses, allowing her to tank their blows. Okay, should remember that too. Pantea does seem rather focused on the match, but honestly you think you’ve got them down pretty well, and make that known to her after your double hands her a plate packed with grub. ‘Watch out for energy sapping, keep eyes open for any tricks Hado has up his sleeves, and knock down Sala before she tries anything sneaky.’ you tell her as you dig in. Pantea nods in affirmation.

Speaking of which, Pintar and Mighty Mask try to go for another combo attack, with Mighty Mask throwing Pintar like a fastball at Sala. Yet he only hits an afterimage, and then the floor face-first. But instead of doubling down and attacking him, Sala goes after Mighty Mask, knocking him at Pintar. She then leaps up and hits him with an elbow drop to the stomach, pinning the pair down. Hado lets out a fireball while they’re down, then moves out of combat as Sala lets out one of her own.

The two fighters try to get back up, but then Sala moves back, focusing as much power as she can and casting out a Shadow Magic spell… something that holds the pair in place, just long enough for them to get hit with a time-out. Interesting.

“And that is it, folks! SALA AND HADO ADVANCE TO THE NEXT ROUND!”

Your gaze actually moves over to Sachie and Zarid, Sachie finishing a cup of noodles and getting pumped up, while Cui and the yellow alien he’s partnered up with, Soshiru, talk about something.

>A. Good luck, Sachie, Zarid! I’ll be cheering for ya!

>Kato: "I mean I got flashbacks to Chrono Cross' accent system whenever I read all those umlauts so that immediately sets a fight or flight response and colors my experience."
And then she was asked on what she thought of the references to Chrono Cross in my story.
>Kato: "I can't say the CC references enhanced the experience, though it's more personal bias that made me less inclined to appreciate it. There are few bits of Cross that I could really tolerate."

Since you clearly like Cross enough to use music and characters from it, why did you seek to make my day a little worse off in the past?

With Sala and Hado heading back, you greet them. “Hey there! Congrats on the win. I’ll admit, those were some nice moves.”

“Yeah, that Shadow Magic skill you used was a bit of a surprise.” Pantea notes. “Looks like it takes a lot out of you though.”

“Ah, nothin’ I can’t handle with a quick rest, Knickers.” Sala replies confidently. Pantea frowns a little, but not as much as before. “One of Jaki’s moves, really. He’s been tryin’ to get me to learn some of the more advanced ones he’s got.”

“Do you know that move too, Hado?” you question.

“Kinda. Not really my specialty though.” he admits. “Besides, I’ve got some better skills at my disposal.”

“Guess I’ll look forward to seeing them in action.” you comment with a smirk. Next up, though, you move to Sachia and Zarid. “You two feelin’ ready for your match?”

“More than ready! We’re gonna WIN!” Sachie declares triumphantly. You can sense her Ki’s spiked up considerably, too.

Zarid nods. “I’ve got some skills I was hoping to show off to Gohan, but guess now’s the best time to see how they fare in combat.”

“Ah I betcha he’s watching you from afar right now.” you tell the older boy, knowing he’s PROBABLY doing just that. “Good luck then, I’ll be cheering for you both!”

“Heck yeah! Let’s kick some butt, Zarid!” Sachie runs off into the ring.

Cui and Soshiru meanwhile just head on in, the yellow alien remarking to the purple one, “Lemme start things off. Should give you ample time to see what these Earthlings are up to.”

“I can already tell the blonde one is going to be annoying.” Cui states. “But the other might be trouble too. Don’t get cocky.”

With them in the ring, you telepathically ask Pantea, ‘Any thoughts on what we should work on for next round? Especially considering what we’re up against.’

‘Doubt 19 will let us play it up as much as the Ginyus did, so that might be a detriment. Guldo gave you some advice on Chiaotzu, right?’

You cross your arms as the fighters take their positions. ‘Yep. I think we’re plenty ready for him.’

‘Good. Might be worth it to come up with something to finish him quick, then. After that we can handle 19 without much worry.’

‘Let’s spend some time training for that. Could even start coming up with combo moves too.’

‘Good idea. Should give us a strategy for next round.’

The two of you think more on strategies to use against Chiaotzu, image training with the info Guldo shared with you. It might be possible to trip him up if he causes a blowback, with one of you jumping in right as he stops the Ki blast and catching him by surprise. Your Spirit Bits might be affected by that too, nullifying their effectiveness, but you could bait him into that and hit him in melee while he’s distracted. Yeah… yeah, this could work! Ice Magic might be tricky, but you could definitely turn up the heat against that. Pantea might also be able to hit him by surprise with the Shinespark, moving too quickly for him to react to it. Yeah, there you go! …But what about 19?

https://youtu.be/an4Rx9eq6Lw

As you and Pantea image train, Sachie starts things off strong against Soshiru. The alien has a few tricks up his sleeves, trying to set up traps with Ki mines, of all things… but Sachie actually outdoes him on that front, using afterimages and Multi-Form to disorient him and get a few quick hits in. Soshiru actually holds on for a short while, but he’s not doing much against Sachie. Cui finally steps in, encasing himself in energy and rocketing at Sachie, just narrowly missing a punch that lets out explosive force from it. Yet Sachie dashes around him and hits him in the back of the head with a kick, easily moving out of the way of several Ki beams Cui fires off. He gives the impression that he’s on the back foot, and tries to trick her with… honestly one of the worst ones in the book. Pointing past her and yelling out, “What’s that behind you?!”

Sachie doesn’t turn around and instead palm strikes him in the torso. Soshiru does try to get the jump on her, only for Sachie to pull the same trick on him. “Hey! There’s someone behind you!”

“Do you take me for a moron?!” the yellow alien asks angrily.

“Oh wait, it’s just... me!” Sachie tells him with a cheeky grin as she avoids his attack, with one of her copies hitting him in the back with a Rasengan! And as he falls, the copy grabs him by the ankles and flings him out of combat, flashing a V-sign as she vanishes.

Cui throws out an explosive wave to force some distance between him and Sachie. That’s when Zarid jumps into the ring, punching the ground and forcing a shockwave of Ki through it. Cui’s caught off-guard, knocked into the air, and Sachie and Zarid combo up by continuously hitting him up higher, one after the other, avoiding his attempt to force them away with Ki blasts and even deflecting some back at him, with Zarid, to your surprise, managing to produce some kind of binding Ki chain around Cui’s arms. Finally, when he’s just barely visible, Zarid delivers a devastating punch and rockets to the ground with Cui, Sachie flipping out of the ring and landing gracefully out of combat.

As Cui hits the floor, he groans in pain, trying to force himself back up… and failing. And with that, both aliens are down! And… that gives you and Pantea a bit of an idea.

‘That move Zarid did right before his finishing punch might be useful. 19 can absorb energy, after all, even Magic.’ you note to Pantea. ‘So binding her arms could be a way to prevent that. Maybe with Clothes Beam, bind her arms to her sides?’

‘That could work. Or… maybe some kind of gloves? That’ll give her a bit of a surprise, unable to absorb a Ki attack due to some form of thick gloves on her hands.’ Pantea suggests.

…And you snicker a little. ‘Boxing gloves. It’ll look funny.’

‘Heh, okay. That’s kinda cheeky, actually.’

You both try to imagine facing her that way, avoiding attacks but also not letting her gain any more power from either of you. A combo might actually work well… a Clothes Beam Combo! Yeah! Bait her out into trying to absorb energy, only to have her hands covered, and then, arms bound so she can’t get rid of the gloves. And with that, you and Pantea could knock her out of the way, maybe hold her down with telekinesis or Shadow Magic like Sala did in the prior match.

Sachie and Zarid march back into the waiting room, wide smiles on their faces. They’re definitely riding that high from winning the first round. And, well, next up is Krillin and Nappa, against Yajirobe and Tao.

Sachie puffs her chest up a bit, hands on her hips, grinning back. “Yeah, that was a pretty good warm-up. Whatcha think, Zarid, you feel good for the next round.”

“Definitely.” he affirms. However, he also gives you a curious look. “Say, Izumi, you and your partner have been observing these matches pretty intently, I’ve noticed. Surprisingly quietly too.”

“You could say we’re just keeping a couple open minds about the competition and how they fight.” you respond, placing your hands behind your head casually.

“That makes sense, then.” He looks over to Sachie, nodding for her to follow him for a moment.

“What, you need some grub or somethin’? I just ate so-” She ends up dragged along with him, kinda pouting along the way.

Krillin and Nappa head into the ring next, Tao and Yajirobe behind them, but you and Pantea get back to image training. You’ve figured out Chiaotzu and 19 as best you can, not much more you can really figure there… but how about yourselves? How would others try to fight you and Pantea?

Let’s see… for Chiaotzu and 19, they might target you specifically. You think with Pantea on who those two would go after first… and immediately realize that it would be you. Okay yeah, fair. But how? Would 19 try to absorb your energy? Would Chiaotzu try to force backfires? …Backfires with Magic could get pretty nasty. Mmmh. You think they’d try to bait you out too, but you could see it coming… right? Bah, this is actually kinda hard…

Pantea suggests working on the openings and weaknesses the two of you know you have, and think how those things might be exploited. That… works a bit better. You do have to admit you might be baited into showboating a bit more, and even with all the Magic you have, at base you’re not exactly one of the strongest fighters. You’re not WEAK, but you’d need to throttle up the Kaio-ken to even reach Peppa’s base strength. In fact… you can easily imagine Pantea trouncing you on her own if you weren’t able to use any Magic. Anyone who can hit you with the MP Buster is someone you need to watch out for. Pantea meanwhile can hold her own really well, but she could get overwhelmed by the trickier fighters. She’s smart, and she might even be able to solo most teams in this tournament, but she couldn’t face Maple and Acer on her own. And you… well, you’d DEFINITELY need to rely on Magic to face her, but the Mahou Knight could reasonably take the hits she can dish out and end up overwhelming her.

…And then there’s the Hakkero…

Ah, of course! It’s something should only pull out when you really need it, but it could reasonably work as part of the Mahou Knight’s arsenal. Okay. That’ll do it! You’ve got more of a plan now. It’s not perfect, but it’ll work.

Meanwhile… Krillin and Nappa have been dominating their fight. Even with Tao trying to engage Krillin at range and Yajirobe going all buff and attempting to rush him, Nappa easily acts as an impassible wall, taking the hits that Krillin couldn’t dodge and dishing out powerful retaliating hits in return. And the coup de grace comes with Krillin hitting both of them with a Solar Flare, that blinds them and Nappa bursting into Super Saiyan and unleashing an explosion of Ki below Tao and Yajirobe that sends them hurtling into the air. The two hit the ground hard… and are straight up knocked out cold. Nappa powers down and… smiles at Krillin genuinely, the pair fist bumping after being declared the winners. Huh. Looks like they’ve got some good teamwork going too.

Which just leaves the final fight of the first round. Captain Chicken and #16… vs. Ledgic and Nox. You spot Mugen talking not just with his fighters, but their foes as well… being oddly sporting about all of this. That… starts to make you wonder if he has ulterior motives. Well, one way to find out, and plenty of tournament left. And then, you and Pantea will face Peppa and Keli in the grand finale, and come out the victors!
