(not sure how to search for it.)
Summary :
You are Anon, a normal person who has been summoned/kidnapped by some elves
So that you could save them from the undead
They are sure that you are a demon and treat you as such.
After exploring the bunker where you are at, you are not sure if the description is incorrect.

You are in a magical world where for some reason the runes work the same as programming.
And a lot of humans were summoned 450 years and waged a war for their freedom so hard they killed a god,
and also made bio-horrors out of people because its easier to make a computer from someone’s brain.

The story returns right after the inquisition gives you a pass to get out of the ruins where you were trapped and you see the outside for the first time.
Returning to the shitshow:

The entrance of the bunker was long staircase of concrete walls.
The metal doors that would have served as protection lay crumbled by rust and the efforts of the expedition.

At the end of the tunnel you can see a glimpse of a grey sky.
Getting through Tyr's army checkpoint was easy, Hildra made a bit of a ruckus and the others hid you for a bit, you finally got out.

You expected a green world, something vibrantly alive.
You were greeted by a dead land.
The Tyr camp was in a circular formation surrounding the entrance to the bunker.
Around it, a wasteland of dead trees and barren soil.

You put your hand on the magician's shoulder.
"Niven, what happened here?"
The scholar looks at you with a surprised face
"This is the land of demons... your home isn't the same?"
That comment adds a little more to your understanding of why this world is so terrified of humanity.
And it makes you wonder what exactly happened in the Great War

The guards take you to a tent placed on the outskirts.
"The inquisitor wants to speak to everyone individually. Wait a second."
"Can't we go now?" asked the kobold
"After the interview." the soldier replied.

An hour passes until four guards came for you.
They have been coming for all the expedition members and returning them with no problem.

Niven had his notes taken and many jars of Rot eater guts were confiscated from Emilia.
But everything had been very controlled despite the wizard’s outcries of injustice.

It gave you the hope that everything would turn out well when the guards took you to a small tent.
Upon entering you saw the inquisitor sitting at a table, filling out paperwork.

He looked up from it and extended his hand to you.
"Good afternoon, I am Inquisitor Salazar. You will be in my charge for now."
With a wave of his hand the guards left and you took a seat in front of him.

...

"Well, now that we're alone. Would you consider killing yourself?" he said in a morbidly jolly tone
"What?"
The inquisitor continued pointing to the small bottle on his table, filled with a greenish liquid.
"This is full of poison, probably enough to kill you, could you -"
"No, wait, why are you asking me this?" You interrupt him in your confusion.
"Because you are a demon." he said as he wrote something on his papers.

There are many questions going around in your head,
And this man's calm demeanor doesn't help.

"Look, I know you're not evil... probably.
But the things your kin brought into this world 452 years ago are still hurting.
Please, your death is the only way to keep protecting this world."

You want to stay calm, but this camp has to have at least forty soldiers.
Why doesn't he just kill you?
But most importantly

"How did you know?" ask him.
"I’m the hand of the god Qothos, his flesh might be dead but not his will. Now let’s resolve this cordially."
What will you do?
>drink the poison (Roll 1d20 Bo3) (Corporality)
>agree with him but don't drink
>disagree
>Convince him that you should live (Roll 1d20 Bo3) (Speech)(DC: 25)
>Convince him to drink the poison (Roll 1d20 Bo3) (Speech)
>He knows what you are, you have to kill him. (Automatic success)
>Write in

If you want to ask any questions or steer the conversation into some way I will include it.

I think to start we should take advantage of his apparently cordial approach and try and get him to explain a bit more. Mention that if there's a way to send us home we'd happily cooperate with that instead.
Also what the fuck is up with the poison? Why not just mob us with guards as soon as he saw us?
>>
>>5143258
+1, I think he's partially worried that if he has to fight us, who he assumes is a demon, shit is gonna so sideways, then inside out because we're a demon in the eyes of these people.

I'm really tempted to try and kill this guy. DO you see that auto success? My god it's so tempting, like a freshly roasted duck. Maybe that's why it feels like a bad idea.

"You know what one of the first things I did when I came here? I found Ghal - he was a victim of those humans all those years ago, and he was artificially kept alive so he can serve them for eternity. What they did to him - it deeply sickens me. No human I have ever met my entire life would have done something like that to another living creature.
First I promised him to put him out of his misery, but I found a way to free him so he'd be able to have a normal life again. Eat and drink, be merry, have friends, maybe find a woman for himself. I had to convince him to live.
I value life, I value normal life. I don't want to mess with the normalcy of life here. But I don't want to die.
I'm not quite prepared to enter into a philosophical debate about the nature of humanity, and good and evil with you, but I will plead my case."

> try and get him to explain a bit more

He seemed open to conversation and not scared so you pushed a bit.
“I don’t understand, how is my death necessary? ”
The man sighed leaning back slightly in his chair.

"I know you're not malicious, the rest of your teammates are comfortable with your presence.
But imagine you get out of here.
You arrive in any city and start to amass power, something normal.
This world is hostile to you and stability is something we all want.
The leaders of this world would be afraid and declare war wherever you went.
Even if you dedicate yourself exclusively to helping people it would be worse.
They would see you as a resource and would fight to get you.
And that's not even talking about the cultists who would see your arrival as the beginning of the end.

You are not yet aware how much impact your existence has on this world."
"Well, help me hide, help me get back to my house." you tell him appealing to his sense of justice.
He thought for a while, considering the options.

"I don't know if I would be able to hide you, but I know that there is no way to go to 'Averno'.
The library of the inquisition may be lying to me, but the Great War began when the demons began to seek a return.
Please, if you don't listen to me and decide to live, don't look for the way back."
The inquisitor fervidly begged

“One last thing, why poison?”
“the blade is unkind, poison gives a gentle death many can’t afford.”
He seemed very sure of his claim, taking up the bottle and staring the world though it.

He put it down and sook you hand.
“I assume you will want to leave now, I still need stay here.
So please, leave and lay low, in our next encounter I will be bound by duty to try to kill you.”

….

That was a strange interaction to say the least.
And he was right, when they are done here they will probably pursue you.
So you could make it hard on them and prepare.
Talking with the group also gave you ideas on things to do.

When you left the inquisitor's tent you found yourself alone and unguarded.
Without really thinking about it, you started to go back to your group.
You would have to leave this place soon if you want to get out alive.
Passing between the different barracks and losing yourself a bit, you came across the warehouse.
No one was watching, probably because no one would dare steal.
but you were already leaving anyway, so you peeked out to see what they had.

You have obtained:
[16*Rations (1 per day and person)]
[climbing tools (+5 to climbing rolls)]
[30 imperial coins]

You filled your pockets with food, which would help not having to stop so much.
The climbing team didn't know if it would be useful, but they had enough that they wouldn't notice if one went missing.
The coins were in a little bag hidden among the rations, you shouldn't have taken them.
But you were in a frenzy and they shouldn't have been there.

Returning to the group you began to talk about the direction you would take.
Emilia and Tog wanted to go east and to the forests and villages that were in the region.
it was a safe zone from natural hazards.
Niven and Hildra however, proposed fleeing north.
It would be much more dangerous but a large group like the inquisitor's couldn't follow you.

Metis proposed to go further into the land of demons.
They all agreed that it was a bad idea.

Who will you go with?
>The inquisitor is only after you, they don't need to follow you. (some may still decide to follow you)

>Everyone north
Looking at the map you decided which way to go.
Following north to the mountains, and then around them.

It was a somewhat dangerous route but you would quickly reach elven lands where it would be easier to be hidden by your companions.

After talking about it with the group, you ended up convincing them.
You began to prepare the supplies and orient yourself.
Each one put on his backpack what they could carry and left the camp without incident.

...

The wasteland smelled of burned wood and mud.
Every step you took broke the layer of ash that covered the ground.
Making it crunch like virgin snow.
The fog dissipated a little more as you moved away from the cursed land
This let you see the mountains on the horizon.

The journey was pretty dull, several hours into the trek and the camp had disappeared from sight
The warm breeze covering the trail made.
There were only a couple of stops when Emilia hunted mouse-like creatures
and when you realized that Tog couldn't keep up with his short legs.

He was exhausted after running after the group so Hildra dropped some of her burden and put him under her arm.
"Hildra stop! This is humiliating!" the kobold wiggled trying to break free.
turning to look you realized that the problem was that Tog was not wearing underwear, leaving him exposed to the wind.

Everyone ignored the pleas of the lizard between chuckles, with the exception of Jericho
"Excuse me miss, could you put him down. I could carry his things so he doesn't get tired."

The mercenary studied him for a bit with her one good eye before replying.
"He'll slow us down. I'll let him go if you carry him." There was a grin on her face, she knew something he didn’t.
Jericho stopped for a moment to think about it and accepted.
Carrying the kobold on his back.
Tog didn't say anything, he just tried to hide his embarrassment.
The young elf tried to comfort him, but only manage to make him hyperventilate a bit.

...
>>
Then you had a little panic attack you realized that you did not know where your cat was.
but you found it in the arms of Ghal.

"Are you holding up well?" You asked him, he had been underground for a long time
And it was strange to see how well he was doing on the trek.
"I don't feel pain, I think I should, but I don't."
"I'll take that as 'decent', and what about this place, does it look normal to you?"
"No, it used to be a green land. So it was transformed into this with the death of the old masters."
*interesting* you thought for yourself.
After a couple more hours of travel and a stop to eat, you decided to prepare camp for the night.
Picking up scattered wood from the few trees and bushes in the area, you had a small fire.

They all brought out sleeping bags or the like.
You took the first watch and crossed your fingers that you could see the stars.
It hadn't been that long since you'd seen them but you wanted to have a bit of normality.

>Lunar dream

You sit quietly waiting for the fog to clear.
The crackling fire made you company while the others slept.

The hours passed in silence, and the sky clears.
The stars are there to your relive.
You can’t find any constellation but that was to be expected.
And the moon is… very close.
It’s a beautiful pearly white, but it’s too large to make sense…
Maybe this world orbits around the moon?
You begin to theorize while the celestial body swallows the night sky.
Wait, Its getting closer?
You panic as you come to the realization that it is indeed going to crash.

Fear takes over and you bolt in the opposite direction
The sound of breaking stone rumbles the earth behind you.
It eventually caches up, squishing you under its weight.
All goes black for a second and then it keeps rolling.

So, you are on the moon.
This is definitely a dream, or you tell yourself that.
It makes no sense you would be here.
The dark sky is filled with stars that shine apathetically to you.

The expanse is a smooth surface, with the exceptions of stone pillars that stab into the ground.
They dig deep into the flesh of her body.
You walk through them, they are filled with runes.
Most of them are way beyond what you understand but they seem to reference each other a lot.
Forming a complex web of magic whose purpose is lost to you.

You keep walking, eventually finding your way home through a hole in the ground.
Your apartment is just as you left it, so you fit back again into your routine.
You shower, feed your cat and yourself and then leave for-
There is nothing there.

You open the door and are back into the cave entrance, your apartment disappearing behind you.
Thankfully you are not alone.
A statue of humanoid shape is chained to the ground.

“Hello” you say
It does not replay back, but she could lead you back home.

What will you do?

The twisted statue reminds you of the world you have left behind.
Trapped in a single expression, and decaying.
Even the stone itself seems to rot, reflecting its earthly counterpart.

You know you can change it, maybe it would be unfair to leave if you can help.
You crouch down and start removing the parasites from the rock.
She's disappointed that you didn't release her, but you ease the bother.

You work until dawn, when you finally wake up from your strange dream.
Anny woke you up by shaking your shoulder.
“Morning Anon, breakfast is ready.”
After preparing for the day, you returned to the road.
Jericho still carried Tog, who was now at least responding when spoken to.
The ashen desert falling behind and giving way to the prairies.
It was greener, still with remnants of death, but alive.

[Rations reduced by 9. The group has 11 more]

The mountains getting closer, the wind changed and brought fresh breaths from the nearby forests.
Emilia patted you on the back and pointed upward
"I think it will be the first time you see a dragon right?"

You looked at the sky, you really had no expectations.
But seeing a mix of octopus and stingray floating in the distance surprised you.
"They're rare so consider yourself lucky, charmer."
You stared at the creature that flew like a garbage bag blown by the wind.

"And that's a normal creature, isn't it an abomination of war?" you asked the ranger
"Well, kind of normal. It's pretty, isn't it?"
you stared at the elf for a few seconds until she broke in laughter.
"Ok, yes, it's very ugly. But not all things are adorable like Me." she told you, gauging your reaction.
The rest of the way passed without incident.

The first thing is getting there alive and not starving.

Using your skills and the terrain to your advantage, you find a trail of some medium creatures.
About the size of a horse.
the footprints remind you of a goat but with three hooves on each leg.

You tell the rest that you are going to hunt and ask them to wait for you.
After a while following the trail through rocky ridges and ash moors, you come across the creatures.
The bellows could be heard from afar.

There are three antelope-like animals trapped in a tar pit.
one of them is almost completely buried and the other two only have the legs.
They're not that far from the edge of the pit, although they panicked and they went deeper.
There are a couple of cliffs nearby, oozing this slimy mass.
the excess creates a small river that descends almost without current.

You look at the trail and it seems that the rest of the pack avoided this trap.
but it leaves you with the decision of what to do with the animals.
they are very close to you now, they see you, but cannot act.
the best they can do is try to intimidate you.
it does not work.

you could kill them and take out the meat,
although you would need to be able to get to them without getting traped yourself.
And if you manage to pull them out alive, maybe use them as pack animals.
If they don't escape, of course.

While you decide, you take some of the tar in a jar,
you don't know if you will use it, but you are used to taking everything.
just in case

[tar jar: ???]

What will you do?

>>GAME OF TRIAL'S
In this game you can say anything to try taking advantage of the situation.
If a plan is created that solves the puzzle you gain (+1 strength) permanently.

In this case, getting one and a half animals out of the tar will suffice.
(More or less, depending on their condition and what you get out of them.)

lasso it? how? we could throw it around their necks, but pulling them to us would only cause them to suffocate

The advantage we have is that our feet are rather broad, compared to the dainty legs of deer-like creatures.
which means we have better weight distrubution and don't get stuck as easily
Still, tar is bad if it gets to flow around and over your foot, so we have to do something about the surface of it.
Best thing would be to lay out leaves to stop the tar from changing it's surface easily, and branches for even better weight distripution.

either way, we first need to calm them down a bit to not struggle and sink in deeper.

I rather get them out alive (to string them up and bleed them out while the heart does all the heavy lifting to pump the blood out)
alternatively we go back and ask for help

Just got home, sorry but it will be only 1 update today

the rolls you give me will be usefull for avoiding them running away if you get them out alive.
But the puzzle itself requires no rolls.
if its a good plan it will succeed.
you have 5 strenght and they have 2 corporality, they are light. easy pull.

the ambiguous ones like lasowing them and pulling will have something like 1d6
1-you pull their head off (no loot)
2-4 you choke them but pull them out (its dead)
5-6 they get out fine.

something like that, depend.

Alright I needed to reread this. This is supposed to be a puzzle, but I still know jack shit about escaping tar pits unless you got a crane.

For starter we need to calm the animals down, maybe use animal handling and offering a bit of a single ration between the three of them for a handling bonus. If they're calm they'll struggle less and sink slower. The two by the edges I'm pretty sure we can get out 100% if we toss in some rocks and large branches to step on, and use the improvised platform to leverage a foot on so we can carefully remove their legs from the tar one at a time. We could probably chop down some branches with our rending cleaver.
We would then repeat the same process with the other horse sized goat thing on the edge of the rat pit.

The one that's almost completely submerged, yeah that fucked mate. I'll be honest got no idea how to get that one out beyond fucking around with the computer to try and develop a grease spell or levitation spell to pull the whole thing out.

Anyone have a better idea?

while you search through your backpack and think of ways to reach those animals, you come up with a plan.

it takes a while, but with enough soil and rubble you cover the surface
Giving you a ground to walk on, your shoes sink a bit but don't get stuck.
You slowly advance, the animals becoming more nervous and noisy.

Once you reach them they panic, reinvigorated by fear you try to escape.
They stumble trying to get free, almost falling like their partner.

freeing them is not difficult, the difficult thing is that they do not accidentally push you and make you fall.

[Roll 17 + 9 DC 13 Roll; critical success]

Starting with a rope around their necks so they don't run away.
You begin releasing them slowly.
Slowly pulling each leg, you manage to free them.
They try to kick you from time to time, but by keeping them leashed and working fast you manage to get them out
before the path you've built sinks into the black slime.

You managed to get two out alive.
The third you try to free it but you can't unclog it without risking sinking yourself.
So you tie a rope around it and try pulling.
>>5147848
The good news is that its out of the tar, the bad news is that by pulling you crushed its rib cage.
Killing it.
Well, two out of three isn't bad.

Carrying the dead one and pulling the other two, you return to camp.
Everyone looks at you strangely when you come back.
worried you might have stolen them from some caravan.
After a brief explanation and more talking on what to do with them
you learned that Emilia had worked for a while in a butcher shop.
Between her and Hildra they could clean and prepare them given time.

What will you do?
Each animal can be transformed into 6 rations and a pelt (quality: D)

Leaving Emilia and Hildra to take care of preparing the animal that died.
you take the other two a little further.
[Group Servings = 17]
[pelt obtained(quality D)]

You sit next to Jericho and Ghal, both of whom couldn't bear to see blood.
They informed you that they were wild horses.
You doubted the statement because this did not look like a horse or a wild animal.
they were too calm as you ran your hand through their mane.
You quickly decided it was a bad decision when you saw the spikes they had.
so you took your cat, who was walking around the camp.

The horses seemed more frightened of his presence than he was of them.
Which spoke poorly of the character of the creatures.

With nothing else to do until they finished you started talking.
"Jericho, dumb question, but what's wrong with the moon?"
you are sure that this place has the astral body.
But you're not sure if you had a bad dream or if it's more magic shit.

"Is it the home of the gods? I don't know what you find strange." answered the kid
and with that you confirmed that it was not a dream, more or less.
"Okay, start from the beginning. What gods?"

It was Ghal who started the history lesson.
"Before there was the moon or magic, there was Gaia.
she gave birth to the monstrous races, the titans, dragons and all the animals.
One day a god came from another side, just like humans, he did not belong to this place.
He fell in love with The First Mother and they had 3 children.
The external god died of old age and Gaia, in her sadness, went to sleep.

The 3 young gods, alone, created mortals and lead the world.
Well, one of them died at the hands of the demon lord."
Jericho confirms what he has told you, but it does not explain what you saw.
Although you decide to keep it for yourself.
but if there is something else you also want to ask.

"You say that Gaia is asleep, but Metis speaks of her as if she is wide awake."
It is then when Niven sits close to you and responds after eavesdropping for a while.

"Metis is from...a slightly heretical cult. They think Gaia wants to end her dream and wake up.
The elven kingdoms don't mind the idea but the Empire says the all mother must not be interrupted."

That gives you a lot to think about.
You're still not sure it's true but you'll get there.
"I personally believe that -" Niven continues speaking and enters a theological debate with Ghal
about cults and the morality of praying to the external god.

you don't learn much new but its entertaining to watch.

...

An hour later you have everything ready and you start the march again.

Thanks to the new pack animals you make good progress and reach the edge of the forest.
Officially leaving that wasteland behind.

Time continues to pass and you make good progress through the forest.
finding the occasional abandoned house.

The transition from wilderness paths to a highway is slow, but now you'll progress faster.
Deciding to take advantage of the time, you talk with Metis so that she tells you how to pretend to be an elf.

"We live under the elven democracy, clans have representatives and they go to a parliament.

You will also find electricity and running water, just not everywhere.
We are still learning from the demon-tech remnants... let me think.
the military is lead by the judges... all elfs share the same blood type, and horns are a symbol of health."

Metis was going to continue telling you random bits of his culture when Anny stopped him.
"That's not what you need, leave it to me." she said she pushed her boss to get closer.

Over the next few hours, she explains the appropriate way to address superiors and the education standards expected of any person.

It's a bit tiring but you feel more confident in your costume.
The neighing of one of the "horses" and Tog's complaints after falling off stop you.
There are three people blocking the path and four more emerge from the sides, surrounding you.
They are dressed in brown robes and try to hide their faces with scarves.
their weapons are stolen farm equipment and kitchen knives.
The leader is the only one who seems decently equipped, wearing a makeshift breastplate and a real sword.

"This is a robbery, leave your animals here and turn around."
the bandit spoke confidently.

your companions did not know how to react.

You studied the bandits for a while and while they were a many, they didn’t really pose a real threat .
They were probably overconfident, you still did not trust them to be morons and try to fight.

"Look, shitbag, these are not some merchants, who hired one bodyguard for their travels, these are scholars going into demon lands
and had to find some muscle to defend them against rot eaters and demon beasts. And I guess I still have to protect them on their way back.
You know- I killed something twice your size not two days ago. Some of my comrades have had chunks bitten out of them.
And I'm really not in the mood for some wayward wannabe who thinks he’s tough shit.
So how about another deal. Because I'm such a nice guy,
I give you and your merry men a coin each and they don't have to find out today what their insides look like on the outside. Sounds fair?"

[Roll 19 + 6 + 3 (good argument) DC 15 Result; Critical Success ]

The bandits look at each other.
“DEAL!” screams the leader
“that’s very little….” Said one of them before immediately getting punched by another bandit.
That was easy.

After giving them seven coins you chat with the leader a bit.
“Why are you doing this, you are clearly underequipped.” You ask
“Well, its part of the act. If they don’t turn around we just use a light spell to stun them.
They don’t expect us to use combat magic.”
He then shows you a large piece of wood with a big and rough rune carved into it

Spell learned:
<Improvised flash: [1 Aberrance] (Range: Short)( target creature suffers the lingering injury Blind for 3 turns) (Roll 1d4= on a 4 you are also blinded) >

“And that works?”
“Sometimes.” He shrugs
“Dude, why would you risk your life like this? Go back home.”
“Yeah, yeah, but it can pay very well when it works. And with so many monsters it’s easier to have a job that keeps you on the move.”
You were going to call him an idiot, but how do those fantasy worlds in the books you read deal with the constant monsters.
While you try to remember he indicates a few hamlets in your map and tells you paths to avoid.

>>
Once you are back on the path and the bandits are well behind you speak out loud.
“That was odd.”
“yeah, I thought you were going to kill them all.” Jericho chirped
“I get the talking it out, but why did you have to pay them.” Hildra was disappointed she didn’t get a chance to quell her itch for a fight.
“The less corpses in our path the less the god sworn will have to track us.” Metis said with his iconic smile.

The path continued in silence for a while, the only notable thing was when Anny approached you
Thanking you for trying to convince them of leaving that life.
Maybe you struck a nerve because she seemed gloomy .

You lose track of time and arrive at a hamlet at dusk.
Its only around eight houses and one of them looks like a refurbish barn.
It appears the barn like house is the inn, and its open.

Skyrim village (distortion: Low) (added forge)

Entering the tavern was an enlightening experience.
The place was a large room with a fireplace and several scattered tables.
Although there were really only two occupied by the few local patrons.
Your entry was noted and forgotten.

This small village saw the occasional traveler, so your presence was somewhat normal.
As long as you didn’t make a scene the inquisitor would have a dead end here.
Approaching the bar, the old bartender greeted you.

You tried to hide while the rooms were paid for.
You had to pay a little while Metis negotiated the purchase of more rations for the trip.
And annoyingly you also had pay to put the horses in a stable.

(4 coins used, 19 imperial coins remain)

With everything paid you went up to the rooms.
Room?
It was another large hall with beds separated by walls made of a couple of planks.
Niven and Metis came up soon after with dinner and a bunch of rations they had managed to buy.
A goodbye later and you finally rested on a real bed.
It smelled like hay and it couldn't compare to the one in
your apartment but it was better than what you've had these last few days.

(Well rested bonus: +1 to your next roll)
[the group has 37 Rations now]

The morning was busy.
You managed to sell the pelt for 5 coins and immediately use 4 to buy some saddles for the horses.
Then with the help of the blacksmith you filed down the spikes.
(Action unlock: Pet horse)

The animals remained calm during the process and would make handling them an easier task.
When you were done you considered selling more stuff, but this place dint need much.
Their only interest is on more basic resources and tools.

You finally meet up with the group, and get ready to leave.
You have been making good progress and the nearest elven city is just a few days away.

Well, since you asked.

>doing:
I'd like more character moments. Conversation where personalities shine through.
I'd like to ask members of the expedition what they are going to do after returning home. They know a demon runs around, and yes, we're now sorta accepting the fact that Humans are considered as demons. etc.

For conversations, there was a QM who did them non-chronologically. Like: he would respond to multiple things at once, continueing every conversation-thread individually, even if they would rationally be happening at different times. Do you know what I mean?
I'd like to ask Niven and Anny about Clan Seeker (they are both from it, right?), Hildra where she learned to fight, or Emilia if she's interested in something non-fiction.

>not doing:
I'm not really a fan of "what should happen next? Bandit attack?" type of choices. Those are not our characters decisions. It's weird.
unless...
>Game of distortion
do we have reality warping powers akin to Bastian in "The Neverending Story" who wishes for something and then the world has always been like this, or rather mages in "Mage the Ascention" where you actively force your will on reality to cast magic.

I also don't think Intermissions should give us knowledge that we shouldn't have as players and only serve as flavortext for immersion

A way the players can add certain setpices in the world, they could use.

>Inquisitor occupation
The work of the inquisition is eternal.
It’s not something that will ever be done.
Salazar knew this
He was just treating the symptoms.

But when the bunker entrance finally collapsed under the strength of his mages he felt a little victory.
He had successfully extinguished the infection and sealed off the entrance.
The rot was still there, but it could do nothing but suffer.
Now he had to deal with the worse part of being an inquisitor.
Reporting to his superior.

The channel of communication used was based on a piece of demon-tech.
Something that brought him great joy, as the others inquisitors refused to acknowledged it .
He returned to his tent and took out a small brick shaped object with runes carved on it.
Looked like a radio.

“Inquisitor Salazar present, identification code [ REDACTED ]”
“Confirmed. Grand Inquisitor Franco here, report.”
“The tip was correct, the ruins where here, a group found them recently but was already gone.
The land has been purged and cleaned of demon ruins. Requesting permission to pursue the remnants of the expedition.”
He didn’t like lying to his boss, but telling him the real reason he had let them go would not fly well.

“Granted, after you capture them you must investigate how they learned of this place.
The anonymous tip we received could not be traced.
It’s imperative we discover who is giving away this information.”

A flicker of static and it was over.
Salazar breathed a bit easier now.
His lie had been convincing, now he needed to take care of those lose ends.
He had lost a lot of men, but he could recruit more.
his aproach was quantity over quality anyway.

He needed to catch the demon before too many sightings of him became public.
*I hate this job* he though, pouring himself a drink.

>I'd like to ask Niven and Anny about Clan Seeker (they are both from it, right?)

You have been on the road for a while.
the village had already disappeared from your sight and the road felt neglected with overgrown weeds.
Your curiosity had been growing about some subjects so you approached Anny to talk.
"If I remember correctly, are you from clan seeker?"
Anny was slightly surprised by the question.
"Yes, Niven, Jericho and I belong to the clan. Are you considering joining?"
"Is it possible?"
"Oh, sure. It would be a bit difficult but it could be done.
Though I assume you'd want to know what we do first."
She had a gentle smile.

"You shouldn't have asked." Metis whispered to you.
The comment bothered you a bit, and you were going to tell him that very graphically.
But Niven grabbed your hand.
"I'm so proud of your first step son."
He was holding your hand tightly with an idiotic smile.
“Admission requirements are few, start-"
The magician was stopped by Anny.
"Niven, calm down, he is just wondering."
"But he is a boy full of curiosity!"
"You're making a fool of yourself." Said the young woman trying to remain serene.

"ANON, sign here to start the application.
This way you will get parliamentary representation and citizenship.
Apart from the obvious benefits of entering the protective policies for exploration. "
Anny tried to take the papers from him but the old man raised them above his head.

"Anny, why is he so excited." you asked, ignoring the old man who was trying to sell you his government.
"If you sign the entry through his patronage you would legally be his apprentice."
"It's not because of that... well yes.
But imagine having a demon in the clan, it would be so easy to understand the artifacts we found."
That caught your attention, do they just store all the technology they find?
"What does your clan actually do?"
"Search for demon-tech, catalog it, and try to replicate it.
We're also the only ones who bother to keep pre-Great War history written down."

"If this is your line of work, what has happened on this expedition? You came unprepared." You said
They were both silent for a while.
"It was accidental that we found something that big on the outskirts of the wasteland. Bad luck."
Niven lost the energy he had been showing and thought of all that he had left behind.

His mood spoiled by memory
The rest of the trip was uneventful.
Most of it was spend talking with Hildra, she has the theory the kobold might be a female.
You could not confirm it but it’s a fun though.

Eventually you all need to rest, so what will you do with your free time?

What does Grease do again? Makes you faster?
>>
>>5152130
grease is a spell that can be described by many a slur
it makes a zone of the ground where
if you do anything in it, you fall on your face (if you fail a check), then you have to stand up, and, if you try to move again, you have to make the check again

this means that any low level character is perma stuck eating shit until the spell ends (which it basically doesn't)
>>
>>5152140
Oh my gosh that's perfect. The versatility of such a spell would be great. You could cast Grease on a group of charging enemies. Some will eat shit, then the guys sides or behind them would need to make their own saves to not eat shit, and even if they do they have keep making saves as they move, and also an additional one to not trip on their friends. It would because glorious dog pile of shit eating.
It could also be used to greasing stuck mechanisms or sliding heavy things out of the way?
>>
>>5152144
>It could also be used to greasing stuck mechanisms or sliding heavy things out of the way?
theoretically, yeah, but it would fall in the realm of "ask the DM", on in this case, "ask the QM"

grease is the most powerful level 1 spell bar none, so I'm not even sure if it would be allowed, it power is only limited by being a pure early game spell (mid or high level targets have good enoug saves for it) and its area of effect (ten foot square)

>Maybe Anny could teach you how to cook.
Sitting next to Anny, you watch how she prepares the food.
The principles are similar, but you don't understand the ingredients.

You ask about it and she patiently guides you through the steps, letting you help her.
The fat used to prepare the dishes is salty so you have to add herbs to mask it.
And the different meats are prepared in ways that do not combine well with some recipes.
There are also many meats that are bitter if you don't prepare them with vinegar.

You spent a couple of rations on your apprenticeship but feel confident that you've made progress.
(Learning Cook skill (1/2))
[the group has 26 Rations now]

the conversation ends up being about farm animals.
"I was born on a farm actually. We had anzus and we grew wheat." she started telling you.
"Anzus?"
She gave you a description of a chicken-sized griffin, bit odd.
"The meat is good, but if you want to enter the world of cooking, the best would be beef. The problem is getting it, since few raise animals of that size."
"How big are they?"
"Hildra could use them as a horse and have space for another person."

"There is also a demonic animal that is raised. Sheep."
It's a little hard to hold back laughter.
From all they could have said, sheep being demonic is a bit absurd.
"Are they carnivorous or something? Why are they demonic?" you asked her.
she shrugged
"It's just an animal that humans started breeding. I don't know where they got it from."
"And people just have them?"
"They are very convenient."
So you are trapped in a fantastic world and the most normal thing is the sheep.
fantastic.

“Let’s go back a bit, how did you end up here if you were raised on a farm?”
“Farms are terribly boring, so I went out to the world for a bit of adventure.
I think this was enough so maybe I will go back.
Not sure what I will tell my parents. What about you? Big plans?”
“No, just getting ground between me and the inquisition.”
She looked at you trying to ignore the voice in her head that blamed her for your situation
But no words came to her mind, so she returned to watching the fire.

The road was clear and the wind carried the smell of pine trees
Jericho and Tog were still talking about bunker stuff,
even after they had been talking about it for 4 hours straight.

Everything else was fine until you ran out of road.
There was no gradual disappearance of the road.
There was not a fallen tree that separated both pieces.
The dirt road was simply gone.
Ending a perfect cut that separated gravel from the forest.

It was very strange.
Niven blamed various gods and forest spirits for this
But it didn't change the situation, the path was gone.
You could backtrack and pray there was another road.
Or you could keep going without a path.

There was also the option of camping and waiting for the morning sun to be able to orient oneself better.
Tog proposed to burn the forest, bad idea but you appreciate his enthusiasm.

You do not want to go back, retracing your steps and looking for another path would take up a lot of time
and you could not be sure that this would not happen again.

But entering the forest is not something that gives you confidence.
It is not natural and it is by no means well done.
If someone wanted to use it to make you lost, it should be more gradual.
And if it was to hide something, they wouldn't have made such a basic mistake.
you are not sure what is causing it and your colleagues give conflicting answers.

in the end you agreed to stop to rest and face the problem in the morning.
If it's magic it will have run out of power by then.
if it is something else, at least you will know that it is constant.

...

You had set camp in the middle of the road, with somefear that it would disappear under your feet.
The light from the campfire illuminated the place steadily.
But the flame wavered between vigorous tongues of fire and embers.
it was a strange occurrence that only added to the mystery.

Hydra stood guard, trying to ignore the strange situation and grabbing a hammer tightly.
Probably for comfort, this was a situation she could not just bash someone’s head.
You were going to speak to her when you notice Ghal doing something strange.
He sat on his knees at the edge of the camp,
hands buried underground, concentrating on something.
You moved next to him to observe.

“Hello master.”
“hi, are you okay?” you asked
“Yes, I’m communing with the forest. The trees speak their own language.
Nothing comprehensible, but they share their fear. There is something leeching from them.”
So you discovered Ghal can speak to plants, not surprising considering he is 70% one.

“Can we get any more information from them?”
“Only that it’s an interloper. It’s been here for a short time, I could learn more if you allowed me to deepen my connection.”
“What if that interloper finds you?”

“I would be forced to dissolve my mind into the roots and find death.”
“You are still thinking of killing yourself?”
“It has been my only though since my imprisonment.
Readjusting to life is numbing to the spirit, but I apologize for my behavior and I will seek to correct it.”
“Ghal, it’s not about apologizing. Are you not enjoying life now?”
“Yes, but it’s a constant remainder of my inadequacy to it.”

You pat his back and talk about his experiences so far.
He needs help relearning how to live and while you may not be the best help,
He needs to talk to someone now, ignoring it would be worse.

After a while you started talking about magic you ended up designing a new spell for fun.
Trying to teach the Tyr how magic works.

The morning settles with a light wind and the sky turns orange with the raising sun.
The group was waking up when you noticed something odd about the missing path.
The shadows of the trees where wrong.
The where trees not casting shadows into others.
Then it click, you tested your theory throwing a stone to one of the tree trunks.
And it passed right through.
This was just a poorly made illusion.

The more you paid attention to details the more you could make out the true path.
The road was not gone, just hidden.
This revelation hit the ground with a mix of awe and regret for not realizing it.
“It’s a forest spirit then, there are some tales of strange magic losing travelers to the forest.” Niven declared.
“But why?” you asked the wizard
“Who knows.”
[“Soulless” skill advanced; (1/3) to level up]

You decided to cautiously advance through the path.
Making good progress once you got accustomed to seeing through the illusion.
Yet the elves could not tell the difference and
the others had a hard time telling apart the fake trees from the real ones.
You ended up leading the group until Emilia whispered to you.
“Anon, someone is following us.”
She discreetly pointed at a humanoid shape that moved through the forest.
Phasing through trees and not moving its limbs.
Like a doll of sort.
It was extremely off putting and it was definitely another illusion.
And it was effective at scaring the group.
Tog had jumped of the horse throwing itself at Jericho.
Who was just as scared at him but now had a kobold backpack to worry about.

You need some way to calm the group down.
Or some way of getting rid of this illusion.
“Master, the interloper must be near, its targeting us. Yet I know not the way.”
Ghal seemed pretty sure of his assessment
So the culprit is around.

Whoever was doing this would not settle for scaring you.
Everything was too planned, poorly done, but planned.
So you could assume this is some kind of ill-conceived robbery.

You focus on what surrounds you.
The elves had started shooting and casting spells against the illusion.
It kept moving the same way, so the culprit was not in that area.
it wouldn't risk getting hit by accident.

You focused your attention on the rest of the forest.
An even palette of greens and browns made up everything in front of you.
There was nothing out of place.
The shapes were uniform and similar in pattern.

[Roll 14 + 6 + 3 (Investigation) DC 17 + 3 + 1 Result; Pass ]

You start to lose hope of finding it.
An increasingly nervous Niven was preparing to run.
"achoo!"
You turned your head to a bush not far from where the sound came from.
It's pretty stupid, but there it was.
You could see two eyes staring at you in terror.

You sprinted, launching yourself at the creature.
Blindly throwing a punch that luckily connected.
a small creature shot out and hit a tree.
Stunning it long enough for you to catch it.

You have grabbed a ball of tentacles with "face".
the illusion of the forest persisted but not the thing that terrified your companions.
"What the fuck are you?" were your first words
"I speak same. Elf no fear? How? magic.... not elf...
Please forgive me demon!"
god this guy is going to be annoying if it can only speak that way.
And you had many questions.
“What are YOU!” you start with something simple.
“I’m me. You don’t eat?”
you wanted to press the issue but something in you mind knew this would not be fruitful.
So you turned to the group.
The best guess was a spriggan, the only useful information they could give was that its an infant.

“Why are you doing this?” was the main problem that you wanted resolved.
“… You not eat me?”
“Answer or I will.”
You dint like playing into the demon roll but you weren’t going to spend more time with this little shit.
“So get group lost. Then eat one lost.”
Okay, so this was a shitty trap made by a kid that wanted to eat you.
You need to ask the group why humans are the ones considered demons.

So, what will you do with the little shit?

You really wanted to punch this thing a bit more.
But it would be a waste
The elves regained their composure and the journey resumed
All while keeping a firm grasp on the creature.

“Niven, do you think we could contain this thing?”
The wizard was still calming down, but he seemed enthusiastic at the idea.
“Oh yes! So many things we could try. I have never contained a creature of so much mana.
A pure inhibitor could kill it so maybe a matrix of interlaying runes?”
“How much time will it take you?”
“maybe an hour? I will properly secure it once we set camp.”
Niven was excitedly working on his new project so you decided to talk with the group’s smuggler.

“Emilia, do you think someone would be interested in buying this specimen?”
The ball of tentacles writhed while begging.
“Please forgive! I repeat not done!”
Emilia looked at it with a bit of disgust.
“As a trophy, no. But the Arcana clan might be interested, if only for dissection.”
The thing began to wail.
“no no no no no no no no no no no no”
You put up with it for quite a long time before you could stuff it in a container
A metal box covered in paper talismans.
*Finally, some god damn peace and quiet* you though, as the box muffled the creature.

>>
The rest of the trip was very calm.
So you took a chance with Ghal, asking him why he was so interested in killing the thing himself.
“It’s a parasite that plays to be a predator. It’s a abhorrent creature with no self-awareness of its twisted nature.
It deserves to feel pain, but I overstepped.
It was yours to shape into a tool the same way I was, its your right as a master.”

You slowly blinked, processing the information.
“Could you expand on that last part please?” you said.
“The creature was harmful to you, so you captured it and transformed it into a tool.
Maybe you will keep it, consuming its soul. Maybe you will sell it.
I find comfort in imagining it could suffer a similar fate to me.”
Ghal went into graphic detail on how you should “remove” the flesh
Leaving you only with pure aberrance, apparently it was a common thing humans did.
His advanced knowledge on the subject reminds you he was a criminal.
Makes you unsure on how to view the humans of the Great War.

You take your mind off it by asking Metis on the progress you have made.
You are 1 day away from the nearest elven city.
You are kind of exited for it, wondering how it would look.
And you also start thinking on the last things you need to prepare before you enter.

What will you do next time you set camp?
>Ask help with your disguise (to who?)
>Ask Metis for a layout of the city
>[Emilia trust > 6] maybe have a heart to heart (What will you say)
>Ask Tog if he is a she
>start drinking with Hildra, last chance to get wasted.
>Write in

To make things simpler I have changed the disguise to this:
Average disguise: Non-elves assume you are an elf; elves you talk to take a DC 17 Insight roll to realize something is wrong, but will be unsure what.

Anny or Emelia. Maybe Anny.

Introduce our cat to the Infant Spriggan. The cat is the ultimate judge of character, and will determine it's fate. Pray that it like you little infant.

Did we decide on a name for our cat yet? Tyrone sounds like a good name.

the way with which they summoned us and we then fixed to summon our cat makes me think their magic can still be improved upon
also have we fed out laptop yet? What's its battery at? Do we have some music on it that we can play?

>disguise
ask that, when confronted about someone noticing something off if we can claim that our horns are fake, but we're embarressed about the state of our horns so we basically use a push up bra.

>[Emilia trust > 6] maybe have a heart to heart (What will you say)
She got hired as a Ranger, just like Hildra. With her contract fulfilled it'd mean our paths likely diverge here.
What is she gonna do from now on, and if she's gonna read something or could be interested in some non-fiction (jokingly tho). but for the sale of the spriggan, she might act as a mediator if she worked with the Arcana Clan before, or at least give us a letter of recommendation to even be able to talk with someone. (if that is the proper way to conduct business in this world)

If the cat likes the spriggan we've gotta keep it. Other than that, let's brush up on elven culture and come up with a backstory. All the disguises in the world won't do anything if we get caught in a lie or don't know some inane bit of etiquette that proves we're a demon.

>Okay, it’s scared shitless but they get along
>Prepare the backstory for your disguise

The camp had been set up a little before sunset.
Tog ended up drinking with Hildra and talking about their lives.
You took the opportunity to have a conversation with the other girls.

"The disguise is fine, but I need help with how to introduce myself? Could you help me forge a false identity?"
"Sounds impractical, why tie yourself to a single identity, won't it make it easier for them to track you down?"
Emilia said somewhat confused by your approach to the problem.
"Well, if the identity is imperfect, yes. But if we do it right, it would be easier to disappear as another citizen."
it was Anny who asked then.
"Okay, it's a good plan, but we need a good story that explains why he has no connections and what he looks like."

Emilia jumped to your rescue, forging an absurd story.
"How about this. He was born on the border of the wasteland, but his village was wiped out by Chimeras,
which he managed to evade by hiding-"

"Emilia stop, no one survives chimera raids."
"That's why it's dramatic. Nobody would pay attention to the rest of the story.
It would be so flashy that the rest of the mistakes don't matter."
"Emilia, we don't want it to be flashy." Said Anny trying to discourage her.
"Do you enjoy being a wet blanket?"
"I'm not a wet blanket. You just don't understand what's at stake."
"Then what do you propose?"
You were also a bit intrigued by what she would say.
"He was born to a large family of seven in a farm in the outskirts of the Hesin port city.
His only interaction with other elves was his family and the occasional visit to the ghetto.
With the passing of his father he seeks better fortune in a city."

Emilia and you stared at her for a while in silence.
that was a good cover.
"That’s not fair, you just gave him your backstory!"
"I did not. I only have one brother and left for studying."
Emilia pouted a bit, complaining that the story was incredibly stale.

"Can we at least add that he ran way fater sleeping with some baron’s daughter.
It would explain why he left in a rush."
She said trying to inject some drama into your lie.
"That's not a bad idea." Anny agreed.
Emilia celebrated her small victory while Anny chuckled.
Shortly after, Jericho passed some soup bowls.

[the group has 17 Rations now]
[Good disguise: Non-elves assume you are an elf; elves you talk to take a DC 20 Insight roll to realize something is wrong, but will be unsure what.]
[Upgrading the disguise further will require advanced techniques or magic.]
>>
The sun had already set when the Spriggan decided to calm down.
You opened the lid of the box and grabbed him before he did anything.
Although he didn't resist you either.
"You now kill I?"
"No, now you will be judged."
Sitting on the floor, you put the creature on your lap.
And you called the one you would trust the most with this decision.
Lucy, your cat.

She had already eaten, just in case.
and luckily for the creature, her interest was superficial.
"Ah, test in combat. Victory taken by me!"
The creature seems to have misread your actions, waving its tentacles in the cat's direction.
Lucy, for her part, believed it was a game and accompanied it with her own blows.
The creature didn't have anywhere near the strength to hurt Lucy.
And Lucy for her part, she wasn't using her claws.

After a few minutes the creature was exhausted and the cat bored.
The feline moved away and lay on top of Hildra, who was already snoring.
"Flee! my victory?"
"Why not." you said "But you need to rest."
Then you placed him back in his cell.

...

Your group woke up and began the final part of its journey,
It was a pleasant travel, you finally exited the forest.
Entering vast plains of farmlands.
The ocean breeze could faintly reach nose.
You were nearing the city when you found the last obstacle.
Adventurers.

“Ignore them, and whatever you do. Do not mention any quest’s.”
Was the only word of advice from Metis

They had set up in a bridge, like some sort of checkpoint but allowing passage.
It was a ragtag group of four worryingly armed people.
The paladin step forward.
“Greetings travelers! You look like you are in the need of some adventurers to even your party!”
They began selling their services as the group slowly approach the bridge.
And then it hit you.
They were a unholy combination of Mormons and a door to door salesman.
A very dangerous salesman.

How will you deal with them?

>You trust your disguise and do like the others.

You've been preparing for a long time to go unnoticed.
This is a good opportunity to check how things are going.
Standing firm, you move forward.

the whole group begins to cross the bridge
The adventurers surround you and try to get you to hire them.
"Do you need help claiming any family heirloom?"
"What about the monsters on the road, do you need more guards?"
"Is there someone we can rescue?"

many generic questions aggressively exposed.
Hildra elbowed him in the stomach to get one away from her.
and Metis resorted to telling them how they are going to die.
Tog surprisingly tried to sell them a toad farm
Good ways to get rid of them.
[Roll 14 + 6 DC; 20 Result; Success]
(they know something is wrong with you, and they will remember.)

When you pass them, you hope they will pass you by.
That they focus on Jericho who goes to the end of the group.
But you're not that lucky.

Paladin grabs your shoulder and stops you.
With his helmet on you can't see his face.
You are like this for a few seconds, still and silent.
a shiver runs down your spine.
the fear of being found out becomes very real.
unsure if you will have to kill them or run away.
"Hello boy! Would you be interested in a cleric cure?"
"What?" your brain says automatically.
A small mistake that causes the knight to yank you out of the safety of the group.
He places you in front of an equally armored person of smaller stature.
"Obviously you have some health problem. Maybe some illness or battle injury.
For a minuscule amount you can hire the services to cure yourself."

"No, I'm fine. Really. You don't need this."
You say trying to placate the knight and drive away the cleric who was getting a little too close.
"Are you sure, health comes first and there is no-"
Before you got totally trapped by the adventurers
Hildra grabbed you by the scruff of your clothes and pulled.
Bringing you back into the group, who had stopped to rescue you.
Emilia jumped at them with a decent excuse.
"It's just that he's an alchemist, that's why he's like that. Avoid the horses that carry his materials."
With that excuse they managed to direct the gang's attention to the animals and give you time to escape.

"Thank you."
"You owe me a drink now.” She says with a toothy grin
“They are not following us, you are okay.” Jericho tried to reassure you.
>>
The city was more of a fortress.
a lot of verticality with concrete and rock walls.
the guards at the entrance let you pass without problems.
You walked through the wide streets of a city that feels both familiar and alien at the same time.
Pieces of human architecture are mixed with forms of more arboreal shapes.
Buildings with pillars of living trees, a market with plant-braided stalls.
all obviously sculpted in an unnatural way.

Where it was most obvious is in the power lines.
Living plants used to support the cables that passed over your heads.
it gave the impression that the city was deciding its identity.
oscillating between industrialization and chaotic nature.

You enjoyed the sights for a while.
but finally you arrived at Metis's house.
It was a small three-story building closer to the sea.
the sea!
you could hear it
the sound of breaking of the waves contrasted to the urban noises.
The first floor was a patio where you left the horses.
But the second hinted at the amount of money the man possessed.

"It has been an exciting journey but before we decide what to do I suggest you rest for a day.
You can sleep here if you don't have lodging."
Metis said this and distributed the first part of your pay.
[You got 90 coins]

With the heavy bag of cash in your hand you have many things you could do now in the city.
Most of the group decides to stay here to be able to wash properly and rest.
But there is still a long way to go tonight.

What will you do in the city?
>You don't have that much time, finish collecting the rest of your pay.
>Jericho is going to walk around the market, maybe you will see something of interest.
> Emilia will probably try to sell her junk, you could accompany her to sell yours.
>You could take Hildra for that drink you owe her now.
>Niven will go to the library to compare what he has learned from the bunker. It would be a good opportunity for you.

Add a photo to your vote and they will be added into the city in some way.
The more complex/specific the photograph, the more changes it will endure.
Note; I was going to have different coins for the different countries, but it only adds a bit of fluff but make the mechanics worse.
So I will simplify and say “Coin” but the empire uses gold coins and the elven democracy has paper money.

If you want. My idea was to remove the handle or the cleaver and attach it to a staff to make it a cleaving polearm. Its shit in narrow places, but it's got reach. No idea of it would grand additional damage at the cost of more accuracy since it's not designed to be made into a two handed weapon. It was an idea I had floating around for a couple of days. If anything we can switch between using the one handee handle and the spear shaft if we take make 5 minutes to switch them out.

You want to go with Hildra for drinks but you backpack is getting a bit full.
You ask Emilia to wait for you and go to speak with the mercenary.

“Hildra, I need to do some stuff but where can I meet you later?”
She thinks for a while, looking back at Emilia waiting for you.

“There are a lot of bars in the main plaza.
Just search for me there, good luck with stuff.”
She say’s winking at you.
Unsure why she did that, the group begins scattering through the city.

With the elven ranger leading the way you take some turns in the street
it revealed how utterly chaotic the construction was.
With some alleys barely fitting one person at a time.
And yet, it’s a clean city, large amount of trash or smell of sewers .
Its counterintuitive, so magic must be at play somewhere.

A almost 30 minutes later, you finally reach your destination.
A pawn shop.
“Why did you choose this place specifically? Won’t they pay us more in the seeker clan offices.”

“ Well yes, but you are undocumented and we have no prove we didn’t just stole this.
So this is the place if you need to fence stuff.” Emilia said proudly.
“Let me guess, you also know the owner and he will give us better prices?”
“Oh no. The fucker won’t give us anything more than the bare minimum,
but he will keep his mouth shut if someone comes asking."
Entering the shop is an experience on itself.
The walls are covered in paintings, hiding a horrid wall paper.
And despite the amplitude of the place it feels claustrophobic due to the amount of tables filled with many trinkets
The stacked furniture was also not helping.
One thing that was surprisingly reassuring was the ringing of the bell at the door.
A familiar sound.

Behind an oak counter was the shopkeeper.
It lower half looked like a jellyfish while his upper half was a mix of ant and humanoid shapes.
It floated slightly above the ground.
Its voice was off, you are unsure where is its mouth.
“The fact that you are still alive fascinates me Emilia, and you brought a friend?
You are not getting any discounts.”

Taking a look at its wares was definitely something.
And the ranger had been telling the truth, he paid just enough to be worth the anonymity of sale.
But you also wanted to ask the obvious question.

“I have never seen anyone like you, you are?”
Its six unblinking eyes turned slightly in your direction.
“A Gheist, not many of us so I understand if you are curious.
Now, if you are done, go have fun elsewhere. I need to find use for the junk your friend just sold me.”
“Hey, this is quality material.”
“Emilia, sweetheart, it’s not. Now scram.”

After getting kick out of the store you look at your companion.
“He is not very friendly.” You commented.
“True, but he is compared to other gheist.”

You stand both in the street in awkward silence for a while
“So what do we do now?” she asks
“We go to the main plaza.”

The plaza was a circular open space centered by a small statue.
And your search for Hildra was difficult, as you had to check every place that sold alcohol.
From the food stalls selling some type of fried spiders or pickled snake strips.
The only thing that makes you gag is some food that smelled of hotdogs but was eaten like candy cotton.
Maybe you will try them, but probably not.

You finally find your mercenary very drunk and being entertained by a smaller version of herself.
You catch up to her and she takes a bit to recognize you both.
“Hey guys!” She says , standing up and opening her arms.
You managed to dodge her , but Emilia got trapped in a bear hug with the smell of wet dog.
Realizing the elf, she pointed at the person she had been talking to.
“look this is Sam, He is a sorcerercer! But shhhhhhh. It’s secrets.”
You look down at the small dwarven male.
He looked like Hildra but was half your height.
“hi” he said meekly.

Emilia seemed amused by the little man, you did not have a frame of reference.
“Do the thing, do the thing.” Hildra insisted while shaking his arm
“yes, I mean. I need to go. Nice meeting you.” He waved and the scuttled into the crowds.
“damn, now Hildra will never get laid.” Emilia commented.
Luckily Hildra was too wasted to hear her.
You took a seat around the table and asked for another round.
>>

Several hours later you were more than tipsy while Emilia had bend over on table.
Hildra, more impressively, was exactly the same as when you arrived.
*What did she drink before you got here* you asked yourself.
You aren’t sure what you are talking with them with them
But Hildra make a joke that sticks.
“Damn, we already have two demons here. Don’t need more.”
“Two?”
She points at the statue in the center.
“That’s a frozen demon. “

As you look at it you realize it’s a petrified human.
Sporting strange equipment , the man is displayed like a trophy.
“How?” it’s the only thing you can say at the moment.
“Do you think I could beat it?” Hildra ponders out loud.
“No way.” Emilia said giggling
“I think I could.” The mercenary argued
“Prove it.”
“Emilia stop” you ordered her
“No, she is right. Fight me!” Hildra slurred
“no. we are drunk.”
“Then it’s an even fight!”

[Roll; 19 +6 DC 17 + 4 Result; Success ]
“I know you are taking a risk, but this is worth a lot more.”
The gheist took the doll in his hands, it wasn’t in a perfect condition but it was well conserved.
“And to whom am I supposed to sell this. My price is fair.”
“Yes, but you are thinking of it as an object.
This is a doll, it implies demons had children, I’m sure you could sell it with that pitch.”
“it’s a fine point, 220.” The man returned the doll back to the counter.
“240.”
“220, last offer.”

>Accept the challenge , it’s a test of strength
This is a bad idea, you know you could get seriously hurt.
But you do want to do it.
“Arm wrestling is then.” You say.
Hildra cheers and takes your hand.
“GOOOOOOoooooooooooooo! “ Emilia gives the signal a bit to late.
You both were already putting your weight into the competition.
She is bigger and stronger, but more drunk.
You have a shot at this.

[Roll 16 + 6 DC 19 + 7 Result; Failure]
(Her perception of you has changed.)

You try to move her, you really try.
But it’s a stalemate.
It feels like pushing a wall.
All you strength only serves to hold her off.
But you are tired from the long day.
Your stamina fails you and inch by inch she bends your arm.

She grinds her teeth due to the effort.
You feel a bit better knowing you are putting a good fight.
And despite her larger size she also runs out of stamina.
And you are both left in a stalemate again, with your arm barely above the table.
And while you were distracted by Emilia’s cheering Hildra made a dirty move.

She kicked the table upwards, making your hand smash into it.
It also made you slip and fall off.
“Victory!” she exclaimed
You wanted to argue, or call her out at least.
But she was already to deep into celebration to hear you.
She was “stronger than a demon”
She by the end of the evening she dropped on you, having reached her limit.
(note; not sure how to finish this part)
>>

The sun woke you up, making you really miss coffee.
Dragging yourself out of a bed you don’t remember getting into, you put on clothes.
After wandering a bit you recognize the place as Metis house.
The how you got here is an unknown.

“Good morning master.” Said Ghal, who was sitting in the living room
Looking at the metal box that contained the spriggan.
“The lord of the house wants to speak with you.”

“Thank you, and may I ask what are you doing” you said cautiously.
“The creature has almost given up, a few more days and its spirit will be broken. I’m enjoying its silence.”
You really need to get Ghal a hobby, or at least talk to him.
This is definitely not healthy.
And he is right, putting anything in a box for days is inhumane.
You need to deal with the spriggan now or its going to lose its mind.
Leaving the living room you enter the elf’s office.
Metis is there, looking at you without doing anything other than seating.
“Hello. Take a seat.
I would like to discuss the terms of our temporary contract.
I could extend your contract so you keep working under clan seeker or I could give you a settlement for the closing of the partnership. “
“so the options you give me is work for clan seeker or take the money and leave?”

“Yes, I have been hired to assassinate some mayor in the middle of nowhere. I need to leave but you have more options.”
“What?” you said, still stuck on how casually he spoke of his new job.

“Yes, I could get you accepted into a elven clan of your choosing.
That should offer some protection and benefits at the cost of being tied to a specific sector.
Or I could hand you a traders license, you could freely set shop anywhere and access to trading contracts.
At the end of the day is just another choice.”
What will you take?

I'd like to improve upon the spriggan trapping spells. Try to see if we can limit it's movement, not to that box, but to an area around an object that one can carry around.
Its intelligent, so we can train it. carrot and stick

Seeker probably? That's the one that examines the demon tech they collect right?
Can we use our money to get some polearm proficiency training?

Can we off handly mention we would be interested in checking out more demon ruins if he ever does more expeditions?

I'm sticking with Seeker. They're the ones with the cache of demon tech right? I can think up of a lot of things we can do with all of that. It would sound like a fun time figuring out what they all do, we might even get to keep some.

>>5159730
Problem is this is effectively a sentient child of sorts. Its thinking, breathing, and an infant or in its infantile stage of life. It is however a magical predator adept in illusion magics that eats people. Kind of a mixed bag.

you can get access to a lot of stuff without belonging to specific clans.

they are just the flavor of missions you will get.

lets read as much as we can in the libraries while we burn through some of our money
vivisecting something sounds much safer than going out and fighting one.

and I very much would like to learn about the development of a spriggan when we have a live subject that we can study and write our own thesis about one day maybe
maybe something nature versus nurture
>>
>>5159717
Seeker or Arcana are the best choices IMO. Would it be possible to join Arcana as some sort of liason to the Seekers? Studying demon magic to better improve our own and all that (plus the seekers could probably always use someone who can throw a few spells around)? I feel like if we joined arcana and spent all our time cooped up in town, it'd be easier for the inquisitor to track us down.
>>
>Metis can move some strings and get you membership in a elven Clan (Subterfuge adventure)
"I would like those admission papers. Could you tell me more about the clans in depth?"
"No, I'll give you the papers now and fill them out when you decide."
He rummaged through a bag he had and handed you a small pile of documents.

He got up from his chair and started to walk away.
"This concludes our professional relationship.
Please vacate this building of your presence within the next 24 hours and good luck with your future endeavors. "
He left the door closing it behind him, in less than an hour he will have fled the city.

You left the office somewhat confused, observed only by the paintings of strangers.
You weren't sure what was going on.
And with the exception of Ghal and you, the house was empty.

A bit of anguish choked you, you hadn't managed to say goodbye to the group.
You'd probably see them around the city again, but that wasn't a guarantee either.
Reviewing the documents that Metis had left you, you saw a couple of blank spaces for you to fill in.

"Ghal, do you know where the others went?"
"Miss Anny and Mr. Niven have gone to their workstations to talk about...something. I don't remember what.
Tog has returned to his job in the library.
And Jericho was going to go back to college if I remember correctly.
The rest I haven't had a chance to say goodbye."
That was a lot of information and he was not very talkative.
So he would have had to see them go.
"Ghal... have you slept?"
"I don't have the need."
"neat."

You had many immediate problems.
Lodging and food were the priority, but you had money for it.
Then comes what to do with all this time on your hands.

"Ghal, I still don't know what we're going to do. Why don't you go out into the city and go see her, I think you spent all day locked up yesterday."
"As you command master."
"Yes yes yes. See you in the afternoon in the main square."

Okay, you're alone with the spriggan.
you had to deal with it before doing anything.
Wait, and Lucy?
You look around and there she is.
You don't know how she does it to always be there when you look for her.
You return your attention to the box and open the lid.

"Death is now?" a meek voice says from the inside.
It spoke unbothered to leave its prision.
"No, but if I let you out of the box what will happen?"
"I may go home."
"you are very honest to tell me that."
"Mom says lying bad."
That brings up some new questions, but you'll have time.
Now it was the time to lie.
"I'm going to let you out, but I'll put a curse on your soul. If you do anything I told you not to do, you'll die."

It was something simple, and it took you a while to convince him, but it would be enough for now to have it under control.
>>
You put it in your pocket and gathered your things.
(For now he will be controlled like this, you can put him back in the box or forge other means of control in the future as this lie is only temporary.)

What will you do now?

Ghal said humans were misclassified as demons, which lets me believe that there are actually other creatures that are demons, or are maybe misclassified as such as well.

another observation I have: maybe time works differently here, humans 400-something years ago in our world didn't had generatores and electricity such as those in the ruins.

You headed to the city library, a task that was easier than you thought.
asking a couple of times for directions and you arrived quietly.
Along the way you stopped at some stalls to pick fruit for potatoes.
He seemed content to be able to eat again, although he did ask that you let him eat some souls.
you told him no, since it doesn't seem like a need for him.

The library was a large brick building containing an acceptable variety of books.
Although the more time you spent studying the more you realized it was incomplete.
There were many books on magical foundations, but researching demons was a Herculean task.

[special interaction with "Spell crafting"]

Of magic, you have little to learn from the basics.
it's all rather more ritualistic than a true understanding of what runes do.
and the theories of why the system is like this are contradictory.
Some say it's the power of Gaia's dream, others say it's the side effect of the god of magic's existence.
although there is something useful.
All the churches of this god forbid using magic in excess, even preventing certain runes from working.
they justify themselves by saying that the "system" should not be abused.
You get the impression that this god is resentful of his role.

spell learned:
<Anti-magic sphere = [4 Aberrance] (Range: Medium) (All magic is destroyed within the sphere)(duration 5 min)(centered around caster)>

(Roll 21 learned only of ferals.)
Your investigations into real demons take you in another direction.
The ferals.
fragments of society that have become savage and sadistic.
The reason for this is unclear
what you do read about them in adventurer's guides, is that they are capable of using fairly powerful magic.
you want to take this threat seriously but they remind you quite a bit of the cannibals in The Forest.
There are many other creatures that consume human souls as food.
like Potatoes, which from what you read, they consume them for the taste.
But ferals are the only ones who go out of their way to cause suffering.

There was also another thing, but you only managed to get glimpses in some religious texts.
The early parts mention gods killing demons, but that was before the elves and the Tyr.
So it was something that preceded humans.
You could only find fragments mentioning these things.
So the term demon may have been aplied to humanity for being another adversary to the gods.
You wanted to research more, but there weren't that many religious texts here.
>>
You were engrossed in a book when a small figure sat in front of you.
"Excuse me Anon, hello, could you help me?"
You looked up to see Tog.
“oh, hi.”
It was the first time that he had initiated the conversation with you.
You both sat there in an awkward silence for a while.
Thankfully it was cut short when he passed you a large piece of paper.
A complex matrix inscribed in every available space.
"What's this?"
"Teleportation, the spell that brought you, I used it as a base but I can't get it to work."
"Wait, is it possible to do that?"
"Hope so."

not dead, just more busy than usual and in need of an aspirin.
short update becouse i crave sleep.
You spend a lot of time rereading the damn thing.
While the concept is sound, the execution runs into many problems.
The amount of energy needed is absurd, especially when the only sane way of creating a portal
would be by shaping it like a river that moves things one way only.
Degrading the content it carries, not to speak of the overlapping space it would produce.

Those are the very obvious problems, but there is also something else.
Something specifically draining the spell, a toll of some kind.
And that toll makes such a high demand that it makes this useless.
But there is something to be learned.

Spell acquired:
<Spatial torsion; (20 Aberrance) (select a point you can see. All creatures within a small radius receive 80 damage)
(Roll 3d4, for every 1 the area increases its size. If 3 ones are rolled it grows without control)>

It’s a dangerous spell, but better than nothing.
“I’m afraid its an impossible task Tog.”
The lizard was a bit disappointed, but he expected this.
“But could you try help me now? I have been searching but found very few records on demons.
Any reason why?”

“Well, the inquisition.” The lizard blankly said.
“The great war was a time where their god died, so they try to cover up how and why.
Not sure why if they admit their god is dead but they have the only accurate records on humanity… baring clan seeker private collection.”
“Thank you, will you stay around here?”
“No, my office is in clan arcana… I don’t mean to be rude but don’t visit. It would be very awkward.”

Well, with that out of the way you could try investigating more about the redacted things, but you would need to sneak in into the cathedrals library.
“Potato, could you extend your illusion onto me?” you asked the spriggan
“What’s potato “
“You are, can you do it?”

You left the library and stopped at one of the many stalls to get something to eat for yourself and a Potato.
At one of the stalls they had live "hens" to show how fresh the meat was.
So you bought some nuggets and sat in a park.

You started eating and passed a few to the spriggan after taking it out of your pocket.
"What do you think of this food?"
"Crunch" he said trying to squeeze a entire one into his mouth.
"Would you accept this instead of souls?"
"Maybe." he was getting crumbs on himself but he managed to eat it.
"Why? What do souls have differently from other food?"
"Juice! liquid life flavor! Why dont you eat souls?"
"becouse i would kill the person?"
"But those animals own souls, but are food. Why should others not? you can eat, so you should."

You spend several minutes listening to Potato try to convince you that consuming souls is the same as eating meat.
He also compares you at one point to the chickens, explaining that you barely have any "juice".
while the elves are the ones who have the most and that you could steal it from them.
How he proposes that you do it is somewhat confusing but it seems that it would be temporary, since "you would digest the juice".
You're pretty sure that would kill them, though he says it's possible to do it without killing.
[Skill learning 1/2; Basic Life Drain]

"I think I understand what you're telling me, but how do you know so much about this?"
"Mom taught."
"Who is your mother? The forest?"
"No, mother is mother, she lives in ..." he stays silent, not sure if it's a good idea to tell you.

Well, that's enough talk for today.
You get up and put him back in your pocket.
determined to find the seeker clan.

...

The reception is simple and without decoration.
Vastly spacious due to the lack of furniture, with the exception of a couple of tables.
you go to the nearest one and you are greeted by an old elven woman.
"Good afternoon, how can I help you?"
"I was doing research for college and the library didn't have what I was looking for.
May I request access to your files?"

[Roll 16 + 5 DC 20 +4 (potato illusion) Result; failure]
The old woman squinted her eyes and took off a pair of glasses to try to see you better.
"Yes, I will need you to sign in here and you cannot take documents out of the building."
She handed you paper with a space to place your name.

>real or fake name?
>>
"Go up the stairs and to the left. We close at 8."

well that was easy.
although the result was mixed.
A large part of her documents ranged from useful instructions on how to use some artifacts to publications dedicated to how they made toilets.
Not to mention the hundreds of ledgers created trying to explain how they managed to build their community.
In your opinion, the most interesting thing was finding the photographs.
They were post-great war, but they were from the human capital.
A gigantic industrial city in a dilapidated state.
It reminded you of apocalyptic games.
>If you have any questions about the demon republic ask them now.

You also remembered a conversation with Niven you had a long time ago >>5151485
The archives before humanity were few, it did not seem to be a focus of interest and most were historical collections.
but you did find mention of the original demons.
The only mention you found was in a philosophical book that described them as "the will of the old world".
It was an interesting topic, but not immediately useful.
the documentation here was important, and the ridiculous amount of documents explaining each demon artifact was hilarious.
but you still had time to decide if this was what you wanted.
Deciding to go against your common sense you explored the building a bit.
many offices, and an underground warehouse where they sometimes held bids on artifacts that were in excess.
Peeking around a bit you also hear rumors of how your expedition resulted in Niven going insane
and that the clan was planning another one even deeper into the wasteland.

The sun started to set, and you decided it was time to go back.
Tomorrow you will decide what to do.

on that note, what kind of democracy do the elves have? I'd wager ogliarchy where you likely only get elected leader out of the pool of influential families represented by the clans?

>still no names that individual significant demons may have had?
Some references like Alfred, Jesus, Martin, Sabrina… normal stuff but important figures are mostly referred by titles.

>It was a republic, so elected leaders? meritocracy? technocracy? oligarchy?
Elected leaders.

>on that note, what kind of democracy do the elves have? I'd wager oligarchy where you likely only get elected leader out of the pool of influential families represented by the clans?
They tried copying the human democracies but the clans where to powerful to be dissolved so they had to make a hybrid.
Oligarchy is a thing for the representatives the clans employ in the parliament but at least the people vote…
the representatives of the clans they paid to be able to vote in… from a list set by the clan...its not perfect.

>any given reasons why they were at odds with the gods, or was it just "they are evil (which enough surely were), so they must be destroyed"
At first it was the slave rebellion, but the gods didnt pay much attention since humans where used like meat shields to kill giants so the rebellion was allowed.
Then they tried to open a portal back to Earth ... TO BRING FORTH LEGIONS OF DEMONS TO CONQUER AND RULE THE WORLD!
that is official reason anyway

>how did they kill a god?
No fucking clue , I do know a nuke was involved.

>what were their interactions with common sentient races?
most of their land was conquered so they had many tyr, elven and kobold “citicens”
some had rights, a few were slaves, depended on which side of the rebellion they were on.

>were they just at war with everyone?
By the end, yes

>Was slavery going on, one way or another?
Yes, they were slaves when summoned and used slaves to hold their ground.

>>5164094
>Who or what was that "statue"? What was he wearing?
Some soldier, the artifact guide tells you it was wearing a protective suit for handling the Acid Mist, another chemical weapon employed.

>>5164099
>Type of government, what they looked like, any religion (Jesus is our only true lord and savior), any unbiased observations of them.
Republic, mostly fair if we ignore the slaves they used as computers.
Religions is not a topic that has survived
And the only unbiased observations come from gheist, who hated them the same way they hate everyone else.

>>5164245
>Were humans defeated and killed?
Yes, all of them. At least in this continent.
Op has not decided if they managed to flee or if the curse of rot eaters was very efficient.

Did they manage to go back somehow? What exactly happened to them after the great war?
No, they didn’t manage to get back to Earth. The ones that did not die from the rot eaters were hunted down like dogs.

Most of the information is not knew. A lot was disclosed by the inquisitor and Ghal’s backstory.
Even the nuke thing is a hidden detail in the world map.
But yes, I put a lot of effort in making every faction an asshole, even if they didn’t want to be one.

>Lucy goes for a walk

The human returned and the cat greeted him by acknowledging his presence
Stretching a bit she moved after her daily fifth nap.
She began meowing so food would be delivered.
After not receiving immediately a response, she tried a bit harder.
She got patted on the heat and told to wait.
After several painful minutes she got a half empty bowl of scraps.
Her indignation was so great she barely ate all of it.
After begging for more and having to fend off the stupid green thing she decided to leave.

The bar under the room was filled with people, but none disturbed the cat.
Trying to ignore the bad omen that the demon creature meant.
And so, Lucy’s confidence for being sneaky cat was unrightfully bolstered.
Stepping outside was forcefully being embraced by the cold.
The sun had set and to moon watched over the land in waning shape.
So the cat went back inside and sat next to the chimney.

After getting bored and avoiding the last patrons of the bar she moved up the stairs.
She remembered her room was in the first floor.
She just didn’t remember the door.

So she picked one and began scratching the door.
She wanted back inside.

When the door was opened, her human was not there.
Only some squalid elf.
He looked around not noticing the cat and closed the door again.
She tried meowing, the did make the elf see her next time he opened.
But when he saw the cat he thought he was hallucinating and locked himself back inside.

That was unacceptable to Lucy, she had called twice and the human had not come.
So she meowed with everything she had.
Waking up several people and sending others into a religious panic.

“Gods preserve us!”
“Please All Mother, do not forsake your sons!”
“Fallen star watch over us.”
“Please my goddess, let it be a test and not my ruin.”
Several people joined in chorus to pray the death omen away.

“Lucy! What are you doing. “
A different door opened and her human had stepped out.
He picked up the cat and scolded her for interrupting the other people’s prayers.
Lucy was just confused why the human had come from a different door.

Arcana
the basic magic books can't teach us much, so maybe read some recent research papers, and maybe 'fix' or streamline some of their spells.

also come up with more of a backstory:
to preface: we are not going to state that to anyone, but when they'd try to coax something out of us, it should be in line with our fake story:
we had an encounter with a demon artifact when we were little, it left us cursed (to maybe explain our 'lacking' soul if someone were to investigate it, like that paladin did), but seemingly well off to understand how spells are created. We were too little to remember actual happenstance and a baron covered it up to use us for his own personal gain.
Without anything to go on we thought our magical ability was normal and very much undersold the ability to the baron.
While we are likely still only average in casting magic, we might be exceptional at constructing spells, yet lack any form of formal education.
>>
>>5165468
Heres a counter to your suggestion before a pass put. Clan Arcana specializes in magic, so if they realize anything quickly like illusionists trying to gain access, they're very likely to notice. Maybe we can improve our disguise a little more before going any place.

Why did you want to go visit them? Only to streamline their spells? We wont be able to use most of them due to our low Abberance.

>the basic magic books can't teach us much, so maybe read some recent research papers, and maybe 'fix' or streamline some of their spells.

The building for clan arcana was exactly what you expected.
Some gothic styled mansion with high towers for no discernible reason.
What you didn’t expect is to set off the alarms just as you stepped inside.
A extremely annoying bell rang and a red light was illuminated over you.

With two guards rushing towards you, you though this could be the end.
A few ideas on how to go guns blazing started to form in your mind.
“Sir, don’t be alarmed, but you have a parasite on your person.” The first guard said.
He was showing his palms while approaching you, but you were confused.
You expected them to see through your disguise.
But now they had you concerned over something unrelated.

“I, eh, I have what?”
“Yes sir, it’s of magical nature, you need help.”
*magic?* you though to yourself, then reached inside your pocked
“You mean Potato?” you pulled out the infantile spriggan who was now sleeping.”
The guards and some wizard that had come to help were as bewildered as you.
The guard tried to reassure you, with a little less confidence this time.
“Yes sir, he must have attached to your mind, that’s why you are carrying it around.”
“No, he is my… Pet? Prisoner? I’m not sure right now. But he is harmless.”
“I…I’m not sure you understand the gravity of the situation sir.”
“Look, I don’t want to get rid of it right now. Can’t I just keep it?”

The wizard completely lost it and left, demanding you were kicked out.
“mmmh, look, we can’t let things like that get inside. Could I help you with something else?”
Sensing a opportunity to get someone to do all the work, you strike.
“Damn, I just wanted the new researched papers publish.”
“I can probably get you the publicized ones. Just, promise to keep it away from that thing. We don’t want them learning.”
“Sure”

A few minutes later the guard comes back with a newspaper like document.
“Form this month. I’m Kreve by the way.”
“John” you shook his hand.
“If you need help removing the thing please come here.”
You got the documents and dint even need to go inside.
Neat.

Reading the thing on some coffee shop was illuminating.
They arcana clan was decently competent at their job.
They had a catalog of different functions they combined at leisure.
The only real problems where with larger projects, such as a grimoire in which each page references each other for a greater spell.
Simple things were nailed down but larger ones fell apart if not maintained.
You gathered some ideas from the documents, like using the computer to run a spell on a loop so it created a continuous effect.
But that would consume the battery.
[Level up: Spell crafting 8/10]
>>
You even had a chance to see their handiwork in the sewer water purifications spells.
You skimmed through the paper that explained them, and decided they were easy enough to find to warren a visit.
In the docks of the city a few engraved runes on stone were sunk into the harbor.
They were neat, it was less purification spell and more of a magical incentive for beneficial bacteria to grow near.
The only thing you dint understand is why they made them glow.
Aesthetics? Maybe.

Looking at the sun you realize the morning was gone.
What will you do in the evening?

>I think Anny is leaving tomorrow. I could visit.

There are many things you want to do, but you are not sure when you will be able to see Anny again
so you decides to stop by to say goodbye.

Finding her is not very difficult, asking for the girl with white hair gave you directions pretty quickly.
You found her storing jars in a disused room.
the comically small window gave little light.
You knocked on the door, but she still got startled.

"Hiding the evidence?"
"The truth is that yes, I want to forget about the expedition."
she said taking your joke a little seriously.
"Well, you said you were leaving tomorrow so I'm came to say goodbye."

"Thanks." she said with a pang of guilt.
"I... I know you could use my help but I just want this to be over." She said, not wanting to make eye contact.
"I have been managing well, so don't think I will die without supervision."
you get her to laugh a little.
She finishes putting things away and comes over to give you a hug.
she almost pricks you with her horns and her hair tickles you but you reciprocate.
she lasts a second and she lets you go.
"Be careful and if something happens, run. My family's farm is a day's journey north, we can hide you."
"Thanks for the offer but I don't think it's necessary."
"Trust me, running away is the best option."

[Hideout unlocked; Anny's family farm]

there is a moment of silence
"Are you really going to leave everything behind?" you asked
"I know I'm going back to square one, but peace of mind is nice."
"Good luck."
"You too."

...

You left the building and went back to the motel room.
You weren't sure whether to be happy for her or sad that it might be the last time you see her.
sitting on the edge of your bed
being comforted by your cat while Potato discovered alcohol.
"hey! where did you get that!"
You got up quickly and took the bottle from the spriggan.
You were going to scold him when someone knocked on the door.

Opening the door slightly you saw the owner.
"Mrs...Oakfell? Do I remember correctly?"
She was a plump, elderly elven woman dressed in oversized clothing.
The gray hair of her hair is becoming more visible every day.
"Somebody came and left this for you."
"Who?"
"I don't know, normal courier. I'll see you at breakfast tomorrow, lad."

She handed you a small package.
"It better not be illegal stuff. This is an honorable establishment."
"Don't worry ma'am."
"Good night."

Closing the door, you inspected the package.
It was still sealed and only the room number was written on it.
Opening you found:

A pendant came out and fell on your open hand.
It was the symbol of Qothos, the god of law.
It was a simple metallic pendant with a stone in its center.
Behind was a crudely written rune.
But it wasn't magic, it wasn't unlike a doodle.
[Qorthos Emblem: ???]

You looked inside the envelope and found a folded piece of paper.
Written inside was a note.

"To the recipient:
I'm busy at the cathedral.
I appreciate you coming over so we can talk.
The situation worsens.

Signed
Salazar"

You reread it twice in your confusion.
Had he committed a typo?
Or was he so out of touch with reality that he trusted you to go willingly?
Starting to pack your things, you ordered Ghal that he will prepare the horses.
if the madman thought you were going to stay put he was wrong.

"Master, we have a problem." Ghal said trying to shield you from the figure in the doorway.
Shortly after he was hit on the head by a shoe.
"LAD! What did I tell you about bringing trouble!"
"Mrs. Oakfell? What's wrong?" You said, immediately you were whipped too by his shoe.
"There's a man dressed in black downstairs is asking for someone with the exact description of you.
You youngsters are already wasting your life?! I'm going to give you the beating your mother never did!"

*shit* you thought.
Ghal tried to hold back the old woman while you looked out the window.
The street was dark but there was no one waiting for you.
Okay, you could escape out the window.
a classic.

You were visualizing the way to the horses when the old lady hit you.
The ball of rage had defeated Ghal
"You better go downstairs and tell him you're going to cut ties with whatever you're up to!
I won't tolerate this stupidity under my roof!"

Okay, first you have to reassure your landlady.

What will you do?

You consider going with the man, but Salazar won’t do anything that directly reveals your nature to the world.
That gives you a special leverage he will have to respect.
Going down to the first floor you find Mrs. Oakfell yelling at the man who came to pick you up.
She orders him to leave but he ignores her.

Approaching the table where he is sitting, you take a chair in front of him.
"Are you ready to leave?" she asks, the old woman awaits your answer in silence.
"I'm not going to accompany you."
the inquisitor's apprentice waits for a few seconds, waiting for the punchline.
and he sighs when he realizes you mean it.
"Salazar will be disappointed."
"And he knows I wouldn't accept, that's why he sent you."
"True, I think even if you don't talk to him there are things that-"
The monologue that was coming was interrupted by Mrs. Oakfell hitting him with a broom.
"You haven't heard! Get out!"
"Ma'am, this conversation is important!"
"I know what you are! gangsters corrupting the youth! Go away and don't come back! You are not wanted here!"
Little by little, the inquisitor's apprentice is losing ground
and several of the guests are awakened by the noise and begin to complain.
Neither you nor he wants to be caught by the night watch, but you have a room to hide.

He ends up running away from the scene, leaving you alone with your landlady.
"I saved you once, from now on, make better decisions with your life."

...

The morning came a little later for you.
You couldn't sleep much thinking if the inquisitor would send more people.
although the conclusion was that no.
if he hadn't done it already, it meant you were safe.

Ghal had already gone out to his partial job.
His hatred of parasites had led him to kill all the termites he found in the trees.
indirectly giving him an exterminator job, he was still unsure why he was getting paid, but it was something.

Going down the stairs you went to the bar to get some breakfast.
Everything was in routine.
Everything was well

There were many people around you, talking and eating.
You couldn't help but listen to what they were saying.
"You have heard that a demon has killed the mayor of a border town."
You almost choked hearing that.
Paying more attention was the only thing that was being talked about.
The empire had declared that a demon had killed one of his vassals.
and accused the elves of being behind this.

Borrowing a newspaper from the landlady, you began to read about it.
blah blah blah tensions escalate blah blah blah the inquisition investigates blah blah blah the demon is described as...
You
They are describing you

Your mind goes blank while processing the information.
Then it hits.

but it doesn't quite fit the profile, why do this and not reveal your existence directly?
The inquisition is likely, they are the only ones hoping to know the location of the ruins where you were summoned.
But then what the hell was Salazar doing there then?

Metis is a madman who can see the future in some way.
and as stupid as it seems the only logical solution is that he is being guided by Gaia.
It is an irrational response but it is the only one that makes sense.
What remains for you to know is why he is inciting a war.

You will have to answer that question later.
now you're worried if the papers he gave you to join some clan are another trap.

...

You spend the morning reviewing the documentation in the common room of the house.
Luckily there is no tampering, they are legitimate.

"Hi Anon" Emilia seems to have found you first.
You were glad to see her but
“how did you find me?”
“Saw Ghal and followed him. He really stands out. “
That would explain how the inquisitor found you.
“But look at this!” she handed you a poster.

Apparently clan Seeker was organizing a large expedition into the ruins of the demon capital.
“I would normally say no, but if you end up going I might join. Pays well and with you it will be safer.”
You read a bit more the bulletin.
“This seems rushed.” You commented
“Yeah, they want to get this done incase war breaks out.”

You expended more time talking a bit more with her about the local contracts.
You could get hired by a caravan or stay in the city and continue your investigations.

What will you do? (Roll 1d20 Bo3 for your disguise)

>Get hired as a mercenary for the new expedition
You are sitting in a Seeker clan waiting room.
There were a couple of adventurers sitting with you on cheap wooden chairs.
When you applied to be hired as a mercenary, you didn't expect an interview.

The door opened and number 23 was called, that was yours.
So you got up and went inside.

It was a simple room with a large table with three people and a chair for you.
"Name?" said the man on the right.
"John."
"Pervious experiences with the wasteland?"
"I was on a recent expedition, you can ask Niven to confirm."

Disguise roll:
Roll 3+5 DC 20 + 4 Result; critical failure
>You never have to roll again; they're convinced you're an elf.

Convince them:
Roll 14 + 6 Dc 15 Result; Success
>You are hired

The man in the center continued with the interview.
"The one where only seven of the sixteen people sent came back? How did you survive?"

You spent a while talking about what you had done, omitting certain details.
"We are willing to pay you 18 for each day of the expedition, plus a bonus for each artifact you find.
We will take care of transportation and food."
That's a decent pay, although there were some problems.
>If you want to clarify any contract condition, say so now.

"The three of us are the expedition leaders, your job will be to protect us and the team of fifteen researchers who will come.
You will be an auxiliary of the hired mercenary band, the day after tomorrow we leave from gate B."

You kept talking about conditions and staff.
In the end they gave you the address of the mercenary gang in case you wanted to talk to them first.
"The Steel Lady"
If you remember correctly it is the same company that Hildra belongs to.

...

With the interview already done and the contract signed,
you dedicated yourself to trying to find some appropriate clothes for Ghal.
"This is not necessary, Master."
"It is, you draw too much attention."
"A thousand apologies Master, how can I compensate this?"
"Collaborating."
"A master should not buy the clothes of the servant."
The repetitive conversation with him was frustrating.
And when he finally stopped contradicting you.
You weren't sure if it was because he wanted be done or because he understood.
His clothes were a bit better, though there was no disguising how big he was.
He was two heads taller than normal elves.

>Create a spell
A spell to make a disguise seem more cohesive unified, and natural, such that when someone looks at the subject they are not especially interesting to the observer. Like the "Someone Else's Problem" field generator from Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

>Visit the mercenary company
To get our story straight with Hildra, to see if she has any advice, and to just say hi.
>>
>>5173043
>He was two heads taller than normal elves.
isn't Ghal a Tyr?

>>5173043
>If you want to clarify any contract condition, say so now.
we have "horses" and can help carry some load, as well as an attentant of our own, Ghal.
How do they factor into the contract?

>Create a spell (Describe it)
try to make a vibrosword enchantment for our cleaver, even if it's a spell that we'd have to manually cast the spell and bring up the abberrance each time
on why vibroswords work: when you cut something, the deeper you go the more mass has to be pushed to either side. When the blade vibrates it usually has room to either side, generously increasing it's cutting ability and decreasing the chance of it getting stuck.
and if that works
>Go shopping at the market.
get a shortsword.
>>
>>5173043
>If you want to clarify any contract condition, say so now
I'd like to keep some of the artifacts we find, and I hope you three will be very cautious in these ruins. You three have been in ruins before right? With threats?

>"A master should not buy the clothes of the servant."
Oh really now?

Things to do
>Visit the forge and upgrade your equipment (select items)(50 coins each)(+50 for artifacts)
The cleaver. Make it more balanced so its less of a bitch to swing, and add it to a stick to make it a polearm for that 1d8+3 damage. Nice. (roll to negotiate the price?)

>>>Go shopping at the market.
Is the monster manual a permanent or one time buff? If it's the former than buy like, two books. One for roteaters, and another for things typically found in demon ruins.
>(weapons training) Basic weapon training; select a type of weapon, +2 to hit with that weapon = 130 coins
The cleaver polearm
>Iron shield (In order to hit you, your opponent must surpass your roll by more than 4) = 45 coins
Is there a buckler version of this we can still wear while using a two handed weapon? I assume it drops down from 4 to 3 or 2? Buy a buckler for us, then buy armor and a shield for Ghal.
Purchase an Aberrance container, medkit, and camping equipment.

>Visit the mercenary company (For what?)
Martial practice and to visit our giant goat lady friend.

>>5173117
+1 to this Anon's spell idea. More damage is good damage.

That's my 4 activity suggestions
>>
>>5173043
+1 to buying a short sword.

>>5173093
I dont know anon, while that does sound useful, that would cost us several abberance on the daily. Could we not instead continue to improve our disguise?
Also what of your two other performance actions?
Also there might not be a need to make such a spell. We could possible learn the illusion spell from Potato at a later date.

Is a short sword shorter than the enchanted fire sword, or do you think it's the same size? Think it'll work for tight confined spaces?

>>5173117
>we have "horses" and can help carry some load, as well as an attentant of our own, Ghal.
>How do they factor into the contract?
Oh that's a good point. +1 to (you) If the expedition doesnt have their own horses we can offer up ours to make things quicker and easier and possible get payed more.

>>5173093
>>5173117
Could I convince either of you that we should buy more things?
>>
>>5173320
>Also what of your two other performance actions?
I just wrote down what I want to do

>Could I convince either of you that we should buy more things?
sure, what do you need
>>
>>5173242
> monster manual a permanent or one time buff?
permanent
the types are:
Humanoid, Cursed, Beast, Abomination, Magic-beast, God-kin, Constructs and maybe some that I miss.
Rot eaters are cursed.
Chimeras are abominations
Potato is a Magic-beast
not sure what giants are tho

>(weapons training) The cleaver polearm
As a rule of thumb i simplify, so two handed weapons

>>5173117
>isn't Ghal a Tyr?
40% Tyr, 60% tree

>How do they factor into the contract?
you wont have to share a cart with other mercenary guards.
Helps you in not needing to roll a disguise for the few elf ones.

>>5173320
>Think it'll work for tight confined spaces?
Its just a vestige of me trying to implement a weight inventory mechanic.
never found a good way to do it so they are the same.
>>
>>5173346
Well. For starters we have 416 imperial coins.
We can sell the hammer for 8
sell the demon lantern for 80
buy a shortsword as a replacement for ?? (assuming 30)
A buckler for less than 45
a shield for Ghal for 45
armor for Ghal for ?? (assuming 100)
Medkit for 50
two monster manuals for a total of 40
Aberrance container for 70
Camping equipment for 50
(weapons training) for the cleaver pole axe for 130

Now doing all those transactions would put us at -11. We can try rolling to haggle again to get a better deal on our end, but failing that we can drop one of the monster manuals leaving us with 9 coins left. You got to spend money to make money as they say, and if we're dead than money doesn't have a whole lot of use for us.
I would also hope we would have enough to reforge the cleaver, but if we lack 100 then I would propose dropping the Aberrance container and the buckler?
>>
>>5173354
>permanent
Oh fuck yes, get a monster manual for cursed creatures.

we have 416 imperial coins.
sell the hammer for 8
sell the demon lantern for 80
sell 2 fuel for 30
buy a shortsword as a replacement secondary weapon for ?? (assuming 30)
a shield for Ghal for 45
armor for Ghal for ?? (assuming 100)
Medkit for 50
one monster manuals for a total of 20 (Cursed)
Camping equipment for 50
(weapons training) two handed weapons 130

This should leave us enough to reforge the cleaver and 9 imperial coins. My autism is peaking right now.

>Create a spell (Vibro sword)
When crafting a spell you need a clear idea of what you want to achieve.
Your only idea was to cut deeper with your weapon.
Your first idea was to engrave the weapon with a rune, but after a bit of experimentation with knifes you saw why the magic weapons were so expensive.
A butter knife you inscribed the rune of light melted.
Conducting and using aberrance seemed too much for normal materials, so you had to accept your current limitations.

<Rending aura: [1 Aberrance] (Range: Touch)(Select 1 weapon, its next hit ignores resistances)(10 min duration)>
<Vicious weapon: [3 Aberrance] (Range: Touch)(Select 1 weapon, its next hit deals 6 extra damage)(10 min duration)>

>Monster manual (Cursed)
You did pick up a book to help out in the expedition.
You memories with the Rot eaters were still fresh.

Finding a quiet spot you read the book.
The beginning was very formal, explaining the creatures and the hierarchies the monsters used.
Most were basic observations and some tips on how to kill them efficiently.
Practical knowledge.

As the book went on, the author took more extreme measures to gather knowledge.
From capturing the various types of cursed creature to vivisections.
The once organized advice became various notes without context.
The final chapter of the book returned to the orderly composure of the start.
But was dedicated on how much normal people could withstand the monsters.
It was very detailed on how they inflicted wounds and what to avoid doing.
You ended with the impression that a lot of people died to create this manual.

[Monster killer (Cursed); +1 damage to Cursed type creatures]
Rot eater traits:
-Deathless: Reduced all damage taken by 1 and immunity to poison, this creature does not need air or food to live.
-Gorger: Consuming a corpse heals 1d4 corporality
-Immortal: This creature cannot die of old age or natural causes.
-Vulnerability to fire: fire ignores the Deathless trait.
-Broken: Immunity all types of charm magic, this creature does not sleep.

>Visit the forge and upgrade your equipment (select items)(50 coins each)(+50 for artifacts)

>Visit the mercenary company
After asking at the adventurers guild about the band of "The Steel Lady" they pointed you to a tavern hidden between rotting buildings.

the tavern of the same name had wide doors, which served as an indicator of what to expect.

The smell of sweat and alcohol assaulted your sense of smell as soon as you opened the door.
Almost the entire space was covered by a bunch of mercenaries almost identical to Hildra.
either that or you were bad at telling them apart.
*so this is a dwarf bar* you thought for yourself

If this was a gang of mercenaries there had to be a leader.
So you started slipping through the bodies looking for the person in charge.
There were a couple that seemed to fit the description of "the biggest in the place"
but you were not successful.
You also didn't get very far with the hands that were sliding around to grab your ass.
A strange degrading feeling, and you also had to punch the drunks who threw themselves at you.
Mainly because of the real threat that your disguise would be damaged.
"ANON!" you heard just before Hildra emerged from nowhere and scooped you up in a hug.
Very friendly but almost broke a rib.
"This is no place for you, what are you thinking?"
"I'm looking for your boss, I'll accompany you on the next expedition."
The huge woman gave a laugh and lifted you like a sack of potatoes, putting you on her shoulder.
"You won't find her like that, I'll take you to her."
It's not like you could argue now that she was carrying you.

I take you to the bar and seat you on a stool the size of a small table.

"Boss! A friend of mine has come to see you."
The bartender approached you
"What can I do for you?"
She was about the same size as Hildra with a darker coat and it looked like she had filed off her horns.
A bit weird.

"Are you the leader of The Steel Lady?"
"In the flesh, I'm Nhave. And are you going to order something?"
"Yes of course, eh, I have been hired as auxiliary for the expedition, I came to talk about my role."

The commander turned her gaze to Hildra.
"How strong is he?"
[Failures come to haunt you >>5159558]

She didn't spend time thinking about the answer.
"Weaker than me."

You weren't sure whether to be angry about your friend's statement
When she realized what she had said she tried to make it up to him with another hug.
asking for forgiveness without regretting what she had said.
She nearly broke your rib again.

The commander took the reins of the conversation again
"Well, we can't put you at the head since we'll have those who pay us there.
And we need those alive, so I think I'll assign you to -"

Where will you be assigned?

- so I think I'll assign you to the scouting team.”
She said with confidence.
“The job is simple, go ahead of us and see if any traps have been laid or if the path is blocked.
Then you turn around and come back to us. My girls aren’t fast enough or stealthy, so you will be with most of the elves.
Don’t do anything stupid, okay?”
“Agreed.”
“Good, now have a drink, I’ll put it in Hildra’s tab” the commander said passing you a mug the size of a small cooking pot.
She was called shortly after from somewhere else and you were left alone with a tipsy mercenary.
You decided to ask a question you had about her.
"Were you taught to fight here or did you join later?"
"First, my mother taught me, like a good parent should. And when I turned four, I left home and ended up here.
What, do you want me to teach you?"

"I would like that, but when did you say you left home?"
"At four, a little young but I was past the growth spurt." She said dismissively
"How long will you live?"
"Thirty-sh?"
You stopped before asking her how old she was.
You were going to keep asking but she interrupted you.
"So you want to get stronger huh? I don't understand why, but the first thing is a good regiment of exercises."

At first she began to talk to you about basic techniques to increase muscle mass, and then she began to talk about more...
alternative ways.
Drinking poison, fishing with your hands, punching stones and other dangerous things.
You began to understand why they live such short lives.

When Hildra got bored of talking to you about it, something that happened pretty quickly.
She dragged you to a table and made you play cards with more people.
It was like being surrounded by frat boys but you held on and no one broke your disguise.
After a couple of rounds you were able to relax, and ended up dragging Hildra into her room.
Again.
She kept muttering something but it was intelligible.

Leaving the tavern you were greeted by the moon.
Distant and clothed in black clouds.
Disappointed by your decisions.
And observing while you went back to your room.
