Meats and organs are spread about in an ornamental fashion around your shrine. The blood is spattered in pagan symbols that you've seen on the black stone pillar. You slit your own wrist and drip your life fluids upon the carmine display, closing your eyes in focus. Hopefully, this will get their attention....

Nothing seems to happen, but you open your eyes only to find yourself in a different place. One of a grim battleground. Weapons and bodies scattered on scarred earth in the backdrop of a red sky choking with smoke. A figure, not what you expected stands before you. The features of a goat, mixed with that of a... Female kobold?... Even with the same stature as you, they give off a terrifying aura of awe. Blood red eyes in black sclera, curled horns, cloven hooves, and a black cleaver of fine craftsmanship pointed at you.

"Stand and show not your weakness small cretin, for if you do I shall cut you down where you stand. You wish to commune with me whether stupid or brave, so speak your desires and reasoning before I carve your tongue out." This strange representation of Baphomet speaks with a tone of heavily restrained violence.

Maybe communing with a dark deity was a bad idea, you didn't think it would get this personal...

Frankly anon, I think it's better to be horny rather than be too differential. There's also the point that Baphomet could've chosen any form they wanted, including a huge goat-dragon hybrid, but instead chose to be a female goat-kobold with the same stature. I honestly think that her form is a nod to our piety to her, and that to not be aroused may be taken as a form of insult, for should not the baser instincts that Baphomet represents be embraced by us?

It's something to consider, at least.

>There's also the point that Baphomet could've chosen any form they wanted, including a huge goat-dragon hybrid, but instead chose to be a female goat-kobold with the same stature.
No objections.

>I honestly think that her form is a nod to our piety to her, and that to not be aroused may be taken as a form of insult, for should not the baser instincts that Baphomet represents be embraced by us?
I'd agree with you if we were talking about a god or goddess of beauty and seduction but this a devious and deceitful being of evil we're talking to. I think Baphomet aims to see what kind of mortal we are. Being horny to the point of stuttering and complimenting is, in my mind, a big show of weakness and would suggest that we're another manipulable mortal who can have their flaws exploited to make them act only in the interests of the demon. I still think that maintaining a respectfully cordial but firm tone will show that we have an strong will and great ambitions of our own but we are willing to make sacrifices to Baphomet in pursuit of our goals.
>>
>>5100472
I disagree, I think Baphomet is a god of indulge in baser instincts. Power, ambition, lust, violence, sadism, all apart of her wheelhouse. While I don't think shuddering or simping would be a good look, the confidence to look in a god's eyes and flirt with them will speak volumes more than being respectful but emotionally distant, like this was some transaction rather than a commitment between two beings. Better Baphomet feels we're attracted to her more so than attracted to the power she can give us, if you feel me.
>>
>>5100508
We're kobolds. Simping and kowtowing is our CULTURE.
>>
>>5100508
>I disagree, I think Baphomet is a god of indulge in baser instincts.
But its not a god, it's a demon.

>Power, ambition, lust, violence, sadism, all apart of her wheelhouse.
True

>While I don't think shuddering or simping would be a good look, the confidence to look in a god's eyes and flirt with them will speak volumes more than being respectful but emotionally distant
You would call "Sexy- I mean, thank you, my lady." and "Also, you have a rocking bod, Baphomet. Had I known, I would've tried to commune with you sooner." confident flirting? As I said before, it comes off weak and it's also not a god it's a demon. You say "emotionally distant", I say appropriate distance.

> like this was some transaction rather than a commitment between two beings.
Which it is, like every other deal with these fiends.

>Better Baphomet feels we're attracted to her more so than attracted to the power she can give us, if you feel me.
Im trying to feel you but I still don't see it. How does displaying attraction to the demon make this situation better? Again, it's a show of weakness and would suggest that we're another manipulable mortal who can have their flaws exploited to make them act only in it's interests.

I think the most you could get away with would be something like "A curious choice for a body, Lady Baphomet" but I'd rather not go with that either.

>>5100531
To a normal kobold, but not us. Not the one who decided to take charge and be the boss instead of finding a new master to serve.
>>
>>5100535
Hey, don't hold my poor attempts at flirting against me.

Whether Baphomet be a god or a demon is irrelevant- fact is that we still worship her above all other gods, so arguing technicalities is a moot point.

Your conflating attraction and commitment as weakness, which I don't think is warranted. Being emotionally distant, seeking to make our piety more as a business transactions- I think that reeks of weakness, of being unable or unwilling to decide for yourself what you want and to take action or commit if needed. Nobody treats worship and piety as a business, with us mortals as consumers being able to switch gods and deities as we feel like. To worship is to be committed, the be attracted to a deity beyond the surface level of what both can benefit from the other. I don't seek merely powerful boons, but committed relationships with this deity on our terms, not blindly stumbling into worship like we have before. I seek to make a conscious decision in how deep this relationship will go, not to turn this into another transaction we make to the gods, to enslave our soul in exchange for power.
>>
Anons be honest with yourselves. You’re just horny, it’s ok, I understand. No need to write an entire essay justifying it.
>>
>>5099957
I have an important question. Does Baphomet have mega mommy milkers?
>>
>>5100552
>Hey, don't hold my poor attempts at flirting against me.
Already doing it.

>Whether Baphomet be a god or a demon is irrelevant- fact is that we still worship her above all other gods, so arguing technicalities is a moot point.
No no no It is extremely relevant. Demons, unlike normal divinities, will ALWAYS try to screw over mortals who worship them by either making them into zelous minions if they're subservient or trick them into bad deals if they're gullible. They see mortals as mere pawns they get to play with and have no sincere regard for their wishes or desires therefore significant caution is warranted when speaking to or asking things of them

>Your conflating attraction and commitment as weakness, which I don't think is warranted.
When dealing with more neutral our good beings i'd agree with you but ANY attraction or commitment can and will be used against you when it comes to demons or any other powerful chaotic evil being for that matter.

>Being emotionally distant, seeking to make our piety more as a business transactions- I think that reeks of weakness, of being unable or unwilling to decide for yourself what you want and to take action or commit if needed.
The only piety one should have for a demon is for its power since power as a principle holds no baggage in it of itself, all of it's other principles will be used selfishly to serve it's own interests which are never truly aligned with mortals. If we do things that it likes and agrees with, such as that kobold orgy, it should be incidental. In other words, don't do it for the demon, do it for yourself. Also, seeing things as a business transaction is only a weakness if you see every relationship that way which neither I nor the Kobold chief does. That was a weird sentence

>Nobody treats worship and piety as a business, with us mortals as consumers being able to switch gods and deities as we feel like.
True, but it's an apples to oranges comparison. Just because demons and other divinities are both supernatural doesn't mean that their worship functions similarly. It's like saying the woship of the Emperor of Mankind and the worship of the Chaos Gods work the same way.

>To worship is to be committed, the be attracted to a deity beyond the surface level of what both can benefit from the other. I don't seek merely powerful boons, but committed relationships with this deity on our terms
If Baphomet wants anything out of our "relationship", It won't be on our terms.

>I seek to make a conscious decision in how deep this relationship will go, not to turn this into another transaction we make to the gods, to enslave our soul in exchange for power.
If anybody here has been risking the enslavement of our soul it's been you. I've consistently advocated for extreme caution in this situation, you're the one who has been nonchalant about the risks of this whole thing.

In summary, interactions with demonic entities require paranoia and little ambiguity.

Pretty big for a kobold honestly. Glad to see this detail has created such important discussion on the nature of simping.

You bumble out a bow and begin trying to formulate what it is you want to say. It is extremely hard not to stammer for a multitude of reasons here, but hey you're life is on the line, better do your best! Maybe it's better that you're sort of too frozen in fear to move? "A-ah? Yes, yes, I was ah... Going to ask for a gift, a boon! Miss dark master, overlord, god...dess... You look quite good!" Nailed it.

That's when the cleaver flies out of her hand and cleanly nicks a (relatively) shallow cut in your shoulder! "I expected too much of one of you. Ah, I was having such a good time searching for your species' patron, as elusive the snake is, so hard to get intimate with. If only the rest of your kind could follow his example in tenacity and boldness. It's a pain that you've interrupted my hunt, but if it's a gift you want, well I can't help but oblige you loyal servant." The menacing hybrid begins to approach you with steady steps after that ominous statement, and as the thought that you should step away crosses your mind-

*Snap*

She twist your leg in a manner it was not meant to bend. "Have my gift of pain." After the first seconds of clarity where you get to see the funny angle your leg is at, the experience is excruciating beyond words. Who can blame you when you start rolling around on the floor in agony? You'd like to see them go through this! "The arrogance of coming here and asking for handouts so casually. If I didn't find it so funny, I would have just killed you." A hooved kick to the ribs rolls you over to face the crimson sky. "Do you wish to know why I beckoned your kind to my ideals? The modernizing world of man is getting too peaceful, there are less and less true tales of adventure. The blood and guts are a formality and symbol to what they really represent, don't start expecting lavish givings just because you gutted a few oversized lizards now. I want more bloody struggles like what you've done recently, not cowardly complacence. Show me true feats of carnage and triumph if you want gifts, those humans are a good example, too civilized, they need culling. Oh, and there are no shortage of mighty beasts in this place." The hoof grinds down on your chest making you let out a squeaky noise. "Oh, and send a warrior next time, I hate administrators."
>>
>>5100633
Reality snaps back. The pain still remains, you'll probably be walking with a limp for a week or two. The other bolds surround you and look on with concern as you squeak out the pain. Considering how you're feeling right now, it feels like a good time to pass out!

------------------------

When the next day comes, the pain unsurprisingly is still there! Looks like someone put a cast on it at least... Communing with Baphomet? Turns out it wasn't such a good idea, very personal, very violent, and gave you some very conflicting feelings in places...

If I'm being honest, treating piety as a business transaction really triggered my autism.

>>5100613
>Already doing it.
That was supposed to be a joke.

>No no no It is extremely relevant
Not to me it ain't. Being meta about ignorant kobolds just doesn't interest me.

>ANY attraction or commitment can and will be used against you when it comes to demons or any other powerful chaotic evil being for that matter
I think that's your and any other neutral or goodie-two shoes opinion, I'd prefer to think of evil worship as passionate, violent, and personal rather than simply the boring exploitative 'selling your soul' nonsense that common in fantasy.

>power for power's sake
Eh, worshipping for power just seems bland to be to be honest. I'm looking for personal flavor and character, not a power transaction.

>In other words, don't do it for the demon, do it for yourself.
That was the general idea, yes.

>Also, seeing things as a business transaction is only a weakness if you see every relationship that way which neither I nor the Kobold chief does.
My autism with that is that looking at worship as a business transaction is such a fucking atheist mindset that it bores me to tears. I want to meme the Aztects, not negotiate a souls-for-power Ponzi scheme. I live for weird sentences.

>Just because demons and other divinities are both supernatural doesn't mean that their worship functions similarly.
I do agree with that, I just disagree that a chaotic, emotionally fueled deities would treat their worshippers as a cold, rational business transaction that be stopped at any time, and vise versa with the worshippers. A passion, volatile relationship make more sense to me.

>If Baphomet wants anything out of our "relationship", It won't be on our terms.
It'll be an agreement between two parties, yea. By terms I meant when and where, not how the bargaining process will play out (and I don't want a bargaining process, just a passionate relationship).

>If anybody here has been risking the enslavement of our soul it's been you. I've consistently advocated for extreme caution in this situation, you're the one who has been nonchalant about the risks of this whole thing.

If I come off as nonchalant, that's not my intention. I just don't want the usual flavor of evil worship in this quest. I'm looking for passion, not a transaction.

>>5100630
Sure, I'll rest mine as well.

>>5100635

I agree with >>5100637
>Damn you Baphomet! I am not weak! It's true, im not that strong... b-but I won't give up, I will become a great warrior! That's right... just like Krish'gah! Maybe I should ask him for guidance. Yeah I'll do that!
Is what I imagine his thought process would be

This could be a great development for [Kobold Chief Name Pending]

>>5100649
>That was supposed to be a joke.
So was my response.

>All the statements about evil worship being about passion
Of course, all of what I've said is working under the assumptions of the common tropes of evil worship in fantasy which works most of the time. If the setting's evil worship involves different ones then I'll make a different case.

>Eh, worshipping for power just seems bland to be to be honest. I'm looking for personal flavor and character, not a power transaction.
Not what I meant, but it's not too important.

>Statements about piety being a business transaction
My only point was that with manipulative beings such as demons, treating it as a transaction is the smartest play.

>If I come off as nonchalant, that's not my intention.
My mistake then.

Well, yesterday was sort of... Painful for an experience with gods. But maybe today will be different if you choose to have a dialogue with the actual patron of your species? Then again you're not really sure HOW to get in contact with said patron. Hunting something impressive would probably help out with the lady, but you can't really join in on that with the crushed leg and all. Could direct the bolds to search in a direction for something big maybe? Humans are pretty nearby though, could be dangerous getting hurt now.

Expedition to...
>North, forests
>West, scrap fields
>South, Frogs

While thinking about this important stuff, you do come up with some ways that might have a slim chance of working in contacting Krish'gah. People usually meditate and stuff to get visions right? Maybe the south would be best? Haven't really explored there much, sort of got side tracked out there. What else was there besides frogs and weird stone plants? Eh, they'll find out when they get there. Time to have a bit of an experience. You take off one of your rings and one of the shiny tubes and put it down before a kobold statuette of Krish'gah, before sitting down and taking out the weird tree sap that you've stored away. Well, nothing ventured nothing gained...

Ruins are a classic adventure

I have to admit we may have gotten a little side tracked here. I think Baphomet would be just as pleased with us dealing with the humans as they would have with us solo slaying a creature. It pains you to go back there, but... Gonna have to go back to the ruins. You cleared them out last time though so surely it's going to be fine. Probably fine anyways. It's raining so the coast is clear when you arrive to the rusted ribcage strut. Your excavation site and the exposed underground tunnel seem to be untouched since the days you haven't been here. At least you think it is?

The smell certainly hasn't improved at all though. The putrefying corpses inside have begun to liquefy into black sludge. Its food room has been completely emptied out since you were last here, but it was probably some animals that just came and ate the last few bars. You weren't in the groups that carried food back anyways. The strange room is the same as it was before, just confusing and without understandable purpose. Deciding to just loot as much as you can for now, you give the order to scrounge through this mess for whatever other valuables you can find since last time. This unfortunately involves digging through the refuse and garbage of those creatures. It's quickly learned that most of the orangish sludge-goo burns to the touch so the that sort of complicates things slightly. There's still bits and pieces of glasswork you can pick out from the surrounding and metal pipes and furniture to cut apart. You've got a lot more room to carry stuff with the full dozen cohort.

You're feeling a little anxious after your last encounter, so you decided to set up a lookout above ground, sat atop the big metal overhang. And your caution pays off, as after a few hours of rummaging, your watch reports a troubling sight. Goblins, over a dozen and a half of them, all moving towards your location. They seem to be wearing patchy metal armor, and one even rides a large-ish spider. One might think that the short races would get along, with height solidarity and all, but no we mostly hate each other. Especially gnomes and halflings, smug little shits. The fair distance away they are gives you a bit of time to react to the newcomers.

No, you won't be having another confrontation here so soon. Everyone is to pick up their stuff and get out before they take notice. Still, you've got yet more loot and learned an important fact. There's another faction at play in this swamp besides the humans now. One things for sure, you don't like the greenies. Before you leave you close the hatch and spread mud over it. Hopefully they don't know about it already?

----------------------------

It's dusky here. You find yourself on the edge of a great precipice. A tower of materials cobbled together into a tower that stretches to the sky while stuck in the middle of a great pit. Wood, stone, metal... Bone. All haphazardly stuck together in some chaotic plan to reach for the heavens. Rain patters down creating some weird rhythm against the myriad components and you're thankful for the overhang keeping you dry.

"Enjoy the view?" A voice speaks up from behind you. Turning around you see a very familiar figure. A red scaled kobold covered head to toe in magical items. From the black cloak with dozens of enchanted daggers sewn into it, to the treasure trove of jewelry, charms, and his ornate eyepatch. This is Krish'gah. He sits there next to a campfire, roasting strange glowing vermin creatures over it on sticks.

"Yes, It's very... Beautiful." You take another glance at the chasm. There is a bit of an awe-filled majesty to the utter otherworldliness of the place. Makes you feel small. "Can I eat one of those?..."

"Go right ahead then." He gestures at you and you sit down across the fire. You pick up one of the skewered creatures and look closer. It's really quite strange, sort of looks like a bat but as if it was made entirely out of light. It feels too soft, and as you bite into it the thing loses cohesion and explodes like a bag of flour. The taste is something you can only describe as 'Warm light mixed with toffee'. "You're supposed to keep the whole thing in your mouth you know. So, what is it that you're here for?"

"Ah... I'm seeking... Counsel of sorts? Advice and such. I wish to guide my people as best I can and came here asking for help!"

"Is that so, that so... Well, you're in an interesting spot aren't you? Funny how much old rot gets buried in the mud as time moves on, now isn't it?" He stuffs one of the light creatures in his mouth and crunches. "I don't like long heart to hearts nowadays, and I normally don't give handouts too easily. Lots of kobolds out there, y'know? Dens on dens all buried like turnips all over the world, and too many souls to fret over. I prefer a sort of tough love like most gods, let people handle their own problems so they don't get lazy." He points his skewer at you and then tosses it into the fire. "Buuut... You lot are in a special little mud puddle, so I'm making an exception for the hell of it. Even made my time here more interesting by getting that damn goat on my tail... On the verge of something very big and you don't even know it, oh yes indeed~..." He laughs ominously at that last part. "Well then, what'll it be, runt? A vision of the futures to come, some treasure, maybe inner strength?"

"How about you tell me about this swamp and its history. What's really so special about it?" You state your desire to him.

"Oh, so that's it? usually they go for the shiny stuff... Well quick, how old do you think this world is? Ever wonder how long the marble has been around?"

"Not really, no..."

"Didn't think so. Not that I can blame you, life is often to short to be worrying 'bout the lives of some dead schmucks long gone! Sure to say, it's been here quite a while. Now for my second question. Know how composting works? Don't answer, it's when organic stuff is piled on top of itself in layers and set to rot and decompose." He takes a skewer and starts to stir up the fire, driving up ash from the bottom. "Now, when you take that idea and move it on from a farmers shed to say... A big region of land, you're going to get a lot of material layers over a long, long time. I think you know where this is going if you have something in that skull of yours and I know you do."

"You're talking about those old ruins?"

"Yes indeed! But those fellows weren't the only things left to sink in the muck. I'll let you guess, but the number of tiny civilizations to get swallowed up here lays somewhere between three and six."

"I do not intend for my tribe to join them, though." You frown at this history lesson. "This is nice and all but nothing we couldn't have learned on our own."

"So very perceptive of you, but I'm far better sighted!" He lifts up his eyepatch revealing blue glass orb in the socket. "Scrying orb. Helluva useful thing, but was a bitch to get. They always leave it out the stories though, must've been too boring going from wizard to wizard..." He trails off mumbling something before grabbing another skewer. "Anyways, that's not exactly why this spot is special. I can't reveal too much because that would spoil the fun, and the weaver gets into a twist when people do that too much. I'll say though that the humies? Small time compared to what's coming. You've already seen a miniscule shard of what's to come before and the heap is stirring up, so have fun wrackin' your brain over that. Reminds me of the time.."

A rumbling crash reverberates through the shanty tower cutting him off. In the distance you can hear a shout. "Where did you slink off to little lizard? I can smell your trail!~"

"Yep, I think out time here has come to an end, and a final word of advice on the subject of our guest. Loyalty has its rewards but don't get lost in blind faith like an idiot. Oh, and when it comes to women, don't lay the crazy ones."

"But what about when you were with that noble woman of..."

"Ah, never said I wasn't a hypocrite, yeah? Do as I say, not as I do. And with that, I bid you goodbye and lay off the funny juice!" Suddenly he runs up and kicks you in the chest sending you reeling back and stumbling over the edge into the abyss. You fall for what seems like minutes...

You come to, writhing on the floor cover in your own glowing spittle. You somehow feel a mix of awful and great. For one, your leg has miraculously healed in your fugue state and it's good as new! It's a new day, and after your visions the expedition returned with both loot and news of goblins inhabiting the swamp. A daily scouting team has reported that the human expedition has reached the edge of the forest and set up a campsite. It's hard to tell, but they seem to have lost a few individuals in their trip to your traps. Also, it seems to be a rumor but a kobold says they saw something large moving around in the southern region. In more local news the dragon seems more snippy than usual, not letting anyone into the egg hut and nipping at them when they try...

Make some offerings to Tiamat to help with our dragon bugging. We could try to deal with our dragon ourselves, but it's scary and it bites. We've already done stuff with the two other gods we know, might as well do something with this one.

>Exploration and military
Set up traps as close as we can around the around the campsite, even if we have to be really far away it's fine. We made a absolute fuckton of traps, like 5 days of actions worth, and by Baphomet I want them used. Also go on an expedition this time with US as the leader instead of yipfag. That's suitably brave and has a chance of combat, a step in the right direction for baphomet without it being really suicidal.

First thing in the morning, you head to the egg hut to see what's gotten the dragon so bothered. When you get to the entrance you can see the beast glaring at you from the center of the small room. For a bit you just have a staring contest with her and no one really seems to know what to do next. Slowly you inch closer and closer to the temperamental creature and get close enough to put a hand out. She nips at you and chuffs in disdain. Rubbing your sore hand you take a step back and think about what to do with her. Maybe something is wrong or maybe she's just being pissy because she woke up and felt like it, who knows, dragons are just like that... You just sit there as unhappy as she is until you decide to just nudge a frog towards her with a stick. She eats it quickly and in a moment of boredom you nudge at her with the stick. when you scratch her with it something surprising happens. Some scales fall loose, and even more surprisingly she doesn't gut you for it. In fact she's... purring.

You continue the strange grooming ritual, scratching around her leafy mane with the stick and examine a scale. It has a strange woody texture to it. Very flexible and hard to scratch. Maybe you could do something with it, most dragon body parts are sought after for a reason. She seems to be growing too. Must be around the size of those big bullfrogs you saw once before.

After about an hour of spending quality time with the dragon, she happened to shed a couple handfuls of scales. She seems to be in a significantly better mood too. Must be growing irritations. You order that the hut and shrine be improved by the kobolds left at the camp. Wood can be used to reinforce and expand the structure. Before you leave, you decide to be generous and offer up some of the more shiny bits at Tiamat's shrine. Hopefully the old god appreciates it...

And now on to the real business of the day, taking a cohort near the human camp. You decide to lead it yourself since you're feeling particularly bold today. You and 15 others ready yourselves and march northwards, stopping a fair distance away so that you won't be spotted. Forwards scouting counts 50 humans at the very least. They've set up tents in a circular fashion with their horses and wagons nearby, and it seems that they're halfway through the process of setting up a palisade. In terms of arms about half of them seem to be regular peasants with at most, tools or bows, but there's a fair group of them that are actually armored in plate. The leader even has one of those fancy powder pistols apparently.

The first course of action is to test their defenses. Of course they would keep watches out while others sleep, you did the same. While you do this, other kobolds of the group set to work creating a fallback screen with traps, just incase something goes wrong. As you scan the perimeter you see that it must be about of third of them keeping watch. Only a few of them soldiers, the rest peasants armed with tools or spears and such. There is an interesting gap that you noticed. The wooden palisade seems to have less eyes on it with understandable reason. You could potentially scale it and sneak in through that way, though it wouldn't be easy to climb back out. Alternatively, there is a single guard that seems (relatively isolated. You MIGHT be able to kill them without others noticing quickly, but that's not guaranteed. They seem pretty bored and tired. Finally, there is a chaotic option. You could spook the horses and hope that takes their eyes off you for a moment. Would tell them that something is up though. A torch would do the trick.

Slowly you creep up, and when you see your opportunity you take it, falling on the isolated peasant watch with a pair of daggers you had forged a while ago. The throat is thoroughly mangled and rendered. It's messy, but relatively quiet. And now you have set yourself on a timer. Get what you need to do done before anyone notices the dead man. You look about and take in the options. You might be able to sneak into the largest central tent and assassinate the leader, You slowly slink your way through the encampment making your way to the canvas shelter, and when you dart inside... Tinkling.

A sabre narrowly thrusts over your head as a hand stabs through the air to skewer you. There was a bell alarm strung up right in front of the tent flap! "A scaled rat have we?" A grizzled wiry looking man scowls at your intrusion. "Knew there was some vermin in this mudhole. Gonna pay ya back tenfold for 'em..." You begin to shuffle in the dueling dance with the man as you size each other up. A sputtering lantern jangles overhead illuminating the arena. You notice him slowly moving towards a table with the pistol on it in your footsies session. You will either have to end this quickly or get out because people will hear what's happening.

Now or never. You lunge forward to get close. It's difficult considering the disadvantages of both height and reach, but once you get close at least reach is gone. Problem is the old bastard is real nimble, poking and slashing at your position. Just gotta, get... And there!

You dart left as the sabre pushes past and you jab forth with your dagger in the lunge. He twist to the side but you slash out with your other dagger and nick a cut in his leather clothes. A retaliatory downward swing knocks a dagger out of your hand and sends a numbing shock through to the bone. A lateral slice skates along your chest with a narrow line as you barely dodge back in time. Thank you wooden armor.

You clutch your wound with hate and both you and your opponent stare at each other with ire. You channel that hate into something useful as you hold the red pearl in your pocket with your free hand. This blood and his on your dagger is the price and you'll pay it. He darts to the right towards the gun, but you focus your intent to preform a magic trick.

A draining feeling as the sensation of bloodloss without injury washes over you. The man howls in pain doubling over just as he reaches the firearm. You take the opportunity and slash forward causing two fingers to fly off in an arc. A follow up stab drives into the gut, but when you try to pull it out, you find his hand gripping the blade. "Fucker!" A solid boot to the sternum launches you back and you scramble to get up, grabbing the dagger you dropped before. You look up to see the pistol being drawn, leveled at your head. "Smile you little!..."

BANG

A high velocity ball of lead flies straight towards your skull, but in an instant a shimmer of orange light appears and the projectile veers, colliding with a hanging light. The broken lantern falls down and clatters on the floor. Burning oil splatters across canvas as the material alights. The man stands on the other side of the fire clutching his side with a wounded hand with pure hate, the one shot pistol now empty and a ring on your finger sparking. At least you know what one of those does now... Nearby the stomping of boots is heard. Reinforcements are coming and this killing seems to be a dud. Escape may be a good option. You're feeling worn out, but... This is sort of exhilarating! Should have participated in training more.

44, 71, 44

It's time to leave. Before you go you give a wave to the man, folding down two of your fingers to add insult to injury before grabbing an ignited wooden stick and batting the broken lantern at the leader. You scramble out the ten and a knife follows you out and narrowly missing, cutting shallowly across the calve. You have a clear target in mind to cause a good distraction. You sprint straight to the tied up horses before the rousing camp has time to catch you. The torch you hold is used to set their tails on fire causing them to panic and run rampant, causing some beautiful chaos. You wildly sprint away after that reveling in the thrill of it despite the failure to kill. As you reach the camp you believe that you've made it as the humans seem busy getting their horses under control, but several arrows fly by sticking in the mud. Your efforts to flee are doubled by the fear of being turned to a pin cushion, but luckily you only get a stick through the arm before a volley of stones is returned. Your cohort is there to support you with slings. The few humans that tried to chase seem discouraged enough to stop, opting to stay back and reorganize. Fair enough, you'd rather get back to camp, this arrow in your arm is starting to sting and the adrenalin is starting to wear off...

----------

By next day the pride of being in exciting combat is overtaken by soreness. The camp seems fine and no human sightings were reported over night. The little raid seems to have pleased most of the camp population, but some are slightly concerned that we only have a mud wall and some traps to protect the camp. Personally you don't find the issue, as long as they don't find your base of operations they can't attack it.

On another note some of the kobolds have taken to wearing little bits of metal or glass on their outfits as decoration. It's not really that much of a problem but those resources could be used for more useful endeavors. They might take to hiding away valuable trinkets as trophies for themselves. Who's to say they already haven't? Then again, it's practically tradition for kobolds, you've even done it yourself looking at these lovely rings...

While you don't really want to take away the joy of gaining trophies from the lads, the useless decoration is pointless unless they've actually earned it. You decide on organizing a formal military outfit for your kobolds to wear into battle. Whatever leather you can scrape together for armor with wooden slats attached for protection. If they've proven themselves in a fight? Fair enough, but just hanging shiny bits on yourself without reason is pathetic. The expedition leader and the few veterans are a good example of actual survivors who can brag about it. Now you just have to decide on what type of weaponry to outfit them with to truly make it uniform...

You also turn your mind towards the subject of architecture. The kobolds at camp did a real nice job with the dragon's shrine. Looks sort of proper with the brick usage. Really built up a stock over the days so far. The topic of today is security though, and it's a hard thing to answer. On one hand, this place wouldn't exactly do well in a siege scenario even with the palisade and trench. Mostly you're relying on the lack of knowledge of your location to win the day, and you could spend the effort on camouflaging the place with flora. Then again, a giant mass of leaves in the shape of a camp with walls and a fish farm isn't exactly inconspicuous...

Well, spears are always a practical idea. They're very cost effective too, and speaking of the cost, you'll need to get more metal if you're going to completely outfit a squad with all the equipment you want. Some more wood would definitely help, but the whole human situation makes lumber a more dangerous prospect. You can make a few machetes before you run out of metal, and as a clever compromise the low quality slag metal can be used for heavier sling bullets.

The rest of us who aren't in the process of getting their equipment in order are at work improving the buildings and creating a secondary outer wall around the camp. The bricks you've been stockpiling are put to use, replacing uneven dried mud with smooth fired brick. Neat, orderly, and good for cutting down the general size taken up. The whole renovation and wall will take a lot of effort, and by the end of the day you're about a third of the way through. You take care to make the structures look less conspicuous with mud and plants.. As hidden as you can make it anyways...

------------------------

The next day you are awoken by the ground shaking harshly. Tremors rock the terrain in unusual spasmic manner for nearly three minutes. A light vibration to a heavy shudder back and forth until finally blissful silence. The tribe emerge from their huts confused and startled, but asides from a few bruises and some fixable building damage, everything seems fine. Looking around no one seems to see anything else out of the ordinary. At least there was no major harm.

Business will continue as normal with repairs for the damaged buildings to be set and construction on the walls to continue. A small squad is ordered to collect more scrap metal to resupply your forging efforts. You stay home to oversee a little personal project in dragon scale armor. You don't have much, so you really want to make sure they get this right. Pretty sure that you've got enough for a vest...

In the middle of these affairs, something quite pleasing happens, the eggs are hatching. Though there's something that's a little... Off about the hatchlings. They all have black scales, red eyes, and curled horns. Everything else about them seems just fine, but the whole telltale nature of who they look like is both ominous and concerning for obvious reasons. The dragon seems to huff at them and keep its distance.

In other also concerning news, a large gray lizard thing has appeared in our clay rich, abyssal watering hole. By large, about six times bigger than an alligator with bulging eyes and a froggy throat. It basks in the waters and occasionally huffs out a dusty gray cloud. Everyone feels uneasy about the thing and until it's dealt with or moves on, we won't be able to keep gathering clay.

You decide to deal with the large beast, rallying up several kobolds who aren't working to grab their slings and prepare. The creature sits itself in the water, seemingly unmoving like a statue and content in that fact. Makes it an easier target anyways. A scattered circle of positions are taken around it and slings are readied. On the mark a volley metallic slag bullets are loosed at the beast, the ones that hit bruising its hide and making it roar in agitation. Before the second volley can be thrown, its throat swells up and it bellows out a cloud of thick grey dust towards a random kobold. The cloud envelops them entirely before they have a chance to scramble away, and when it clears a perfectly formed statue of a kobold is left behind. You've heard rumors of something like this before, but never expected to see one yourself; a basilisk. The retaliation of a second panicked throw finishes and it winces in pained annoyance as a bullet nails it in one of its bulbous eyes, drawing blood. You have a pissed off mythical creature on your hands.

As you march further into the scrap fields towards the ruins, the sky progressively becomes more orangish. The quake seems to have cracked a lot of the struts and the metal ribs have fallen off and sunk into the ground. It seems that the hatch has been untouched since you last came here. Some of the larger broken off shards from the quake are quickly pocketed.

Despite the danger, the only choice for you is to keep the attack going. Even if you flee, the thing is likely to chase you back to the camp and that wont end well. So glory and death it is!

On the upside, it seems to take a long time to gather up its petrifying after using it. On the downside, it's still massive and perfectly capable of killing the old fashion, and blunt sling bullets can only do so much slamming against its slightly rubber scaled hide. What ensues is a desperate cat and mouse game of everyone fleeing and trying their best to avoid the raging monster. You've got a slight advantage with how its sight has been injured, but it's still a basilisk in the end. One kobold doesn't run fast enough and is crushed violently underfoot. Two more fall to a wave of stoning breath that came quicker than expected. It's heavily battered though for sure, you've been doing your damndest to survive here. It's completely blind in the left eye after several good hits and there are bruised patches of bloody scale all over. Luck changes when the beast however, turns its eyes towards you. You turn to run, but it's quickly gaining on you with it's massive size....

3d100 to face a personal crisis...

--------------------------

The further west you go, the brighter the sky turns. It's as if a forest fire is lighting the swamp up. It's hotter than usual too. On you march for over an hour, keeping an eye out for wildlife until you come across a remarkable sight. A chasm into the depths of the earth that goes who knows how far and a width across that only a truly exceptional bridge could join the gap. Within it lies a monstrous corpse of metal, like the veins of a body sticking out the sides of the chasm like some great wound. Intermixed, massive fluorescent orange crystals and geysers of boiling gas spewing out dot the chaotic landscape. Broken machinery tries and fails to operate while living shapes skitter around the wreckage. And the noise, oh, the noises coming from this place.

What sort of people could have made something like this? Floating over the chasm standing on air as if it were ground is the laughing magician. He does nothing but stand there calmly, and that's somehow more intimidating than his usual antics...

The heart throbs in the chest and blood pumps. Lungs are burning and as death nears, you turn to face it. While the massive reptile barrels down on you, a motto you once heard resurfaces in your mind. 'Who dares, wins.'

And so you dare, turning on your heel to leap forth into the jaws of death with your daggers drawn, screaming. The creature clearly did not expect this as you tumble clear over its head and onto its back. You stab down to pierce its hide. Fiercely, you ravage its skin, stabbing again and again, using the blades as grips into the meaty body. It thrashes as projectiles batter its flesh and still you hold on, clambering forward till you meet your prize. Your knives carve bloody rifts into the beast's eyes making colorful sprays of brackish crimson spatter the grey murk of the swamp. A cloud of grey smoke starts to erupt from its mutilated visage, but you continue to savage its delicate organs in this life and death dance.

your limbs feel dull and numb, but eventually, pitifully the blinded creature begins to slow until finally it slumps to the ground, its skull a unrecognizable mess of mangled flesh. You try to stand but exhaustion prevents it. You look down at your arm and find patches of stone covering the scales, stiffening the muscle and sensation. It is there all across your body, but you have thankfully been spared the cruel fate.

What a thrill!....

Their vague black shapes covered in metal and occasional pustules of bright orange fluid stuffs. The magician stands on air and rotates slowly to face you, like one of those funny paintings. While you move along the rift, a familiar sight approaches. Salamanders, crawling up the sides of the cliff like it's nothing. You crawl to the belly of the beast, burrowing into its guts with your knives. With the exhaustion something else comes; hunger. It compels you forward in search of food. Raw and bloody. The heart is still pulsing slightly when you find it. It fights to stay attached until you find yourself digging teeth into the organ while it still beats weakly, attached to the dying creature. It's one of the most satisfying meals you've had in your life. When the dead is done, you lay back covered in blood as the cohort surrounds you, looking down nervously at your red form...

----------------

When you awake, you feel better than you have in a long time. You dreamed of something but you couldn't quite remember it. A mess of scales, blood, and noise. The patches of stone still remain, covering your body like strange scars. A quick stretch has you feeling weird, and you realize your body has changed. Stubby wings sprouting from your back, a rare mutation found extremely rarely in kobold young that brings them closer to their draconic superiors. The dragonwrought are almost always live noteworthy lives, for better or worse. Not only that, curled horns growing from your head. A sign from two of the gods?... It's welcome anyways. You feel great.

The expedition brings back metal and news of the change in environment. That great foreboding chasm and its bustling inhabitants. For some reason you get a bad feeling about the future despite your fortune. Apparently the dragon has gone out and started to hunt for herself. It's strange but nice that she isn't lazing around like a cat anymore, but is it because she feels like you don't feed her well enough or something? Not that it matters... After the recent victories, the kobolds have started to feel extremely confident in the camps abilities. There's talks about demanding wooden lodges or an underground burrow due to our fortune.

With food lowering down and the ration bars running out, more hunting is in order. Need some stretching to get these stony muscles to get back into working order too, so you decide to run along with the dragon the next time she decides to go off on her own.

On the subject of construction there's the obvious requirement of materials and labor. The problem with wooden lodges is that you need actual proper lumber, not the stick trees that you find here in the swamp. To get those you'll need to get woodcutting teams up to the forest and the problems with that is obvious. The general opinion of the camp is that we can deal with any threat involved regardless of the realities of the situation. Another option would be a burrow underground, but that will obviously require days of effort. Just getting below the mud layer to some solid earth that won't collapse will be a pain. Could always tell them to suck it up and deal with what they have though, you are pretty intimidating.

It might not be the best location, but it's most convenient. The order is given to start excavation of a burrow. It's going to be a difficult and tedious effort, but you're sure the kobolds can pull it off. Natural burrowers after all. You can even let the hatchlings help out carrying around dirt, fun for the whole clan.

A few go out to hunt for food, including you. Unfortunately for you, this hunting trip involves trying to follow an inconsiderate dragon. She doesn't care to slow down for you and is surprisingly fast for something that lazes around for most of the day. Good thing you've been feeling more athletic than usual... She moves to the south, slinking through the brush and past the stony fruit. Even if it weren't raining at the moment she's surprisingly hard to hear. Didn't know something so large could be so stealthy. After a bit more traipsing about, she stops at a large pond, and before you could catch up, lunges with great speed at something. You break through the underbrush to find her latched on to the face of a giant toad, crushing the poor things skull in her jaws. Really wonder if it was necessary to come along with her. She quickly sets to chewing on the beast and you join her, sitting down at her side.

After a few minutes of sitting down and just watching the dragon eat, a familiar individual walks out of the foliage. The frog witch. "Oh, it's you." She looks at you with bored eyes under that wide-brimmed hat which happens to have several colorful frogs resting on it. "Different looking. Still the same goat lover." She turns her gaze to the large corpse and the dragon snacking on it. "How barbaric for a race that considers itself above all others." She seems quite casual about it all. Is that a basket of mushrooms she's carrying around?...

She frowns at your question. "As fair as can be in these troubling times. The air has become fetid with taint recently. My amphibians do not care for it."

"Hmm? I smell nothing. Feels sort of warmer though."

"I suppose the magic potential in your fibers is wasted on you. Perhaps instead you experienced the shudder of our world's great back? She nods her head a little causing a small frog to flop off of it, She curtly turns around, tapping the ground with her staff twice, and walking off. A long line of colorful frogs being to hop out of the pond in a neat line after her.

You look over to the dragon as she stretches out after her meal. Pretty sure that most of the meat is unsalvageable after what she did to the poor animal. Nothing but mangled offal there. Suppose it's time to head home...

-----------------

A new day, new progress. Hunters return with succulent meats, and the laborers have made alright progress on their tunneling. It's not much, but it's a start. Midway through the morning routine, a guard reports to you a slightly concerning event. An absolutely massive toad easily the size of a hut, hopping slowly towards the camp. Only when it comes closer and you spot a familiar figure do you relax. The witch sits on top of the toad, a sizable tent perched on its back.

"You wish to learn the arts, and so I shall provide." She blandly states as you hand over the items she wanted. "I'll give my lessons until I feel the cost has been repaid. I shall stay in this abode until I deem fit to leave, so call upon me when you wish to learn." She bows slightly again, and the toad hops off and plops itself down close to the camp. Construction of the wall is bound to be finished up some time around mid day, and soon after the excess labor will be focused on the burrows. You personally, take to the task of learning magic.

Enchanting is the subject of the day. A craft that is supposedly half formula and mathematics, and then half intent and soul, whatever that means. "These patterns are very important. You will need to learn these runes and what they mean thoroughly..." She mumbles to you while measuring and detailing salt lines. "The salt is for containment and focusing. You'll need a second medium for conducting the energy. I assume of course you will choose blood." Well you do know that blood carries great significance. Why shouldn't you use it?

After your hand is pricked and blood is dripped onto specific spots, the next phase begins. "You will need an item to enchant and ingredients as well. Anything will do for the latter, from dirt to valuable gold. Just know that what you put in is what you get out..."

Maybe the magical wood and sap, and the goo/slime from the lab slimes, if anons are feeling up to it. Maybe all this would be better to do on our armor.

You choose your dagger for the subject of your enchantment. Dragon scales and teeth of the basilisk are placed in a fashion around the blade as the ingredients to this recipe. "Now sit before the sigil. Close the eyes and think about the item and power flowing into it. This meditation can take some time on a first attempt, so be patient."

Doing as instructed you sit there and focus in meditation. Minutes go by and nothing but discouraging silence. It's an hour in when you start to actually sense something. Ethereal strands of power that are more felt conceptually than physically. You're entranced by them for a long time, studying how they flow and the sensations. What makes them retreat and come back. By evening you're finally able to manipulate the magic and send it flowing into the dagger in a rough and forced manner. It's mentally exhausting, but you keep it up until you can feel the presence no more. You pick it up and examine the weapon. The mediocre dagger is now quite fine looking with a sharp serrated edge. A yellowish bone look paints the metal with the hilt wrapped in a green scale kind of material. Overall it looks very nice...

"Acceptable work I suppose." It's more than acceptable! "There you have it then. You will have to practice with methods and formula on your own to learn more. It's a beautiful craft, so treat it with reverence lizard. That will be it for today." You're about to object to the somewhat early end, but A wave of tiredness hits you. Seems like it's a pretty draining process on the body, at least when you're a novice at it. You decide to retire to watching the work crews as they bustle about with their construction efforts.

By the end of the day as you spend some time watching the some duels with the other kobolds, your scouts bring you information. The humans seem to have sent a horse rider off back the way they came, likely to inform their city of what happened here. Unfortunately seems they avoided the traps in place. In other news there are also reports of goblin patrols being spotted getting closer to the camp. Possible issue there. In other news, some people seem to be debating about whether or not the forest is getting... Bigger? Just growing outward over the days. Obviously ridiculous though, trees don't grow that fast...

You decide that your time today is best spent on dealing with your neighbors. You Form up the standard squad of twelve with you leading of course. Been feeling that you need to take a more active role lately. More glory that way. Everyone has had enough time to get their equipment made too, so you're all much better put together than the average kobold fighting force. If only you had the population to keep up fighting these days. That's that and this is this though, so to war you go. You take a jar of organs for good luck as you head out to...

The hummies are fairly under control from what you understand, but the gobbos are an unknown factor that you don't care to underestimate. you and your cohort march along the borders of your territory keeping watch out for any patrols that might pass by. Looking at the terrain of the swamp it's a sort of strange feeling to realize that you consider this place your home, even with its sogginess...

Hours pass by with no encounters, and you're starting to believe that there's nothing to find out here when you spot some movement. Obscured due to tumultuous and uneven terrain, and your band come very close to an opposing goblin patrol about 22 strong. Both sides scramble into position, readying to face each other. Their leader, a goblin with a pointy hat in scrappy leather armor riding a large spider hisses orders. "Git 'em! Git 'em ya sods!" The other goblins seem to be a mish mash of equipment and various leathery goods, though there seems to be a dedicated portion making a ranged line with blowguns and small bows. Another is armed with large unwieldy, but dangerous hammers.

Everyone scatters to avoid melee combat while readying their slings. The goblins get the first volley off, sending arrows and darts your way and peppering your kobolds. The first sling volley takes down two and injures others luckily, but the hammerers continue to pursue melee. Their chieftan, perched on his spider shakes a staff angrily at you, cursing in some green tongue. You would dismiss it as worthless nonsense, but you sense a tugging in the air, and materializing from the aether a spectral web descends on a group of bolds, tying them in place and preventing them from fleeing. A spellcaster is a problem.

Magic is in the air and some members of your cohort are in danger if you do nothing. May as well show off your own skills, can't let a damn greenskin show you up. You being to charge towards the enemy patrol, drawing on the viscera jar at your side you bring horrible pain upon the enemy shaman causing them to writhe in agony. The spell web holds, but frays enough for the kobolds inside to free and defend themselves against the gobbos assaulting them, though they still take a solid beating.

A goblin makes the poor decision to strike at you, letting you test your dagger for the first time. Nothing much special happens, but you do take note that it's quite sharp. As in it severed his arm to sail off in an arc sharp. Very nice...

The slingers are preoccupied with counter fire against the goblin ranged fighters being unable to fire into the melee for risk of friendly fire, but aren't having exceptional luck. For the typical goblin they're quite accurate really and at least one of your number goes down foaming at the mouth from an unlucky blowdart hit. So far the odds seem to be... Eleven kobolds including you with several very battered to Seventeen gobbos.

Fiercely you go to run down the enemy leader, but find yourself getting bogged down in the enemy hammer line. The bastards are just real tenacious, not caring how much they get cut up, as long as they can keep moving. Their numbers mean they inevitably get some good hits on you, and damn does a hunk of heavy metal sting. Not to say that you don't get many good strikes in, slaying at least a few of the goblins in retaliation.

By the time you manage to fight your way out of the melee, the spider riding greenskin is in full retreat along with their ranged line, seemingly not liking the odds against your kobolds after the fierce fight you put up. The last few goblins fight wildly, probably hopped up on some mushroom mash and take effort to put down, but the fight seems to be at an end. The casualties end up being two kobolds and many injuries to thirteen dead gobbos. Not a fair enough exchange in your opinion. The dead have their equipment collected along with whatever trophies and trinkets you can grab from the goblins and you make note of the direction they fled. This will have to do for now as you return home to recuperate.

-------------

Everyone spends the evening telling their own stories and accounts of the fight, bragging of their accomplishments over their meals while others continue the dig. The excavation has gone well, and an informer tells you that they've reached a solid soil layer, making any tunnels stable enough to stand with proper reinforcements. You tell them to continue the work as you head off to the hut for some well deserved rest....

However in the middle of the night you wake up, rubbing your eyes and nearly screaming as you see a tall lanky man covered in fetid furs and a pointed hat smiling down at you.

"Thirty days." He laughs showing yellowed teeth and holding up three fingers on each hand. "Thirty days, ya hear, and everyone's runnin' around dancin' like headless chickens! Tell me feller, what sort of critter ya think ya are?"

"Kobold?" You sputter out in horrified confusion.

"They sayin' they're a lili' lizard!" He slaps his knee wildly at this. "Lizards tryin' act tough in the swamp, havin' a fiesta, can ya believe it!" More howling laughter follows. You attempt to get up and suddenly he lurches forward, jamming a finger into your chest and staring into your soul. "THIRTY DAYS YA HEAR. Folks who aren't BIRDS, do best to make like a bear and HIBERNATE. Gonna get real funny like, all LAUGHIN' and SHOORMINESS."

Then, just as soon as he randomly appeared, he twitches a little quickly contorting and twisting into a small ball and disappearing into nothingness. You did not sleep that night.

--------------

Today you find yourself questioning a lot of things. Last night mostly, but there's other points to thing about. Like how your population is slowly dwindling, though the others seem confident and determined to get revenge eventually, the same as you, it won't do when you run out of fighters. The goblin skulls put on spikes around the camp please you though. What's that even mean thirty days? Hibernation?...

Research some magic, maybe try for another fiesta to increase our population? Honestly, we really need to stop taking losses we can't replace. We should also ask the witch who the fuck was that crazy teleporting man.

As for what that crazy old man was saying, I'm guessing we'll need to hibernate at the 30 day mark? That's what I'm hoping for, because surviving 30 days of hibernation from today wouldn't be fun.

Okay, then time to get it together, there's work to be done... Need to get stuff done, yeah. A small expedition can just go off and gather some metal while you figure some stuff out. Nothing to put them in too much harm though, can't keep taking these losses.

You turn to the witch to learn some more about magic and find her resting on the toad. The dragon is nearby, reading a book. Dragons are smart creatures, and most can talk, but you never really thought of the logistics of how they learn things. It never occurred to you that they could read books, but there she is just... Lightly turning pages with a claw.

You take note of this and approach the witch to start the lessons for today.
