I've always wanted to do one of these, a dungeon core story.
It's your average "build it and they will come" kind of dungeon story.
Where you'll build a base, spawn monsters, construct traps, and maybe defeat some adventurers.

Rules

All traps and monsters will have a DC (Difficulty check) that invaders will try to beat.
If they beat it then they'll continue as is, if not they'll lose health. On 0 health, they are defeated and their live is in your hands.
Beating adventurers will result in resources you can use to expand your dungeon.

Let's begin with the basics. Where are you located?

Dungeon environment
1 - Forest
2 - Mountains
3 - Near ocean
4 - Vulcanic
5 - Arctic
6 - Jungle
7 - Other
>>
>>5088777
2 - Mountains
>>
>>5088777
>7 - Other
>City
Definitely Hard Mode if people find out. That's why we hope hobos and orphans straggle in instead of Hueg Sword McGee.
>>
>>5088784
I actually like this one a fair bit. We'll run with it.

Unlike the average dungeon, which enjoys the safety of the forest or some such to quietly progress through those dangerous initial stages, you've found yourself manifested in a city.

1 - Small city
2 - Large city
3 - Capital

About where?
1 - Abandoned church
2 - Warehouse
3 - Some guild
4 - Sewers
5 - Other

In what kind of part of the city?
1 - The dock ward
2 - The trade district
3 - The industrial plaza
4 - The castle district (nobility)
5 - Other

Cripes, seems a bit fast to lock in...
>Large City
Relative anonymity of deaths compared to Small, less potent reaction compared to Capitol
>Basement
More than giant rats down here.
>Trade District
Money... Could go for corrupt merchants feeding us their errant business partners in case the deals are off.
>>
>>5088815
Yeah, I just want to start writing to be honest.
I'll leave the second vote open for a little longer.
>>
>>5088800
>1 - Small city
>5 - Other: Underneath the Mayors office
>3 - The industrial plaza (I assume this to be the more central option)

Right so hear me out on my reasoning here, and feel free to disagree. I'm thinking we get ourselves set up in a small town in the most central location that we can, and then when we've grown powerful enough we put in some elbow grease, sally forth from the Dungeon and we turn the small town in to an extention of the Dungeon. An additional layer of defense, if you will.
>>
>>5088800
>2 Large city/capital
>5 Other Abandoned (?) Orphanage.
>2 Trade district or Temple district
>>
>>5088813
>>5088815
>>5088829
>>5088838

So we've got the sewers in a harbour area (No city size stated)
Some basement in a large city in a high traffic trading district
Basement in a small city underneath an influential figure's manor / estate.
And finally an orphanage in a large city in either the trade district or a highly religious ward

In essence
2 x Large city
2 x Basement
2 x Trade district
1 x Sewers
1 x Dock ward
1 x Small city
1 x Industrial plaza
1 x Orphanage
1 x Temple district

As it is, we'll be looking at a basement found underneath a building in a large city.
Additional votes or clarifications can be made up until 15 minutes of the time of this post

Light. At least, that's what your senses are telling you.
You feel like what can be best described as unsteady. Wavering.
As you raise a hand to rub at your eyes, you find you have neither one.
No arms, nor eyes. Yet you can see. You can feel. The room you find yourself in is chilly.
Smooth walls surround you. No door leading anywhere, just a perfectly square room.

A room in which you can inspect any corner or crevice, yet are unable to register anything beyond the cold walls.
As you try to stand up, you find yourself effortlessly floating towards the ceiling, where you halt.
All that put together was quite an experience, to say the least. And your mind has finally caught up.
After taking everything into consideration, you decide to start screaming, "Aaaaaaaaaaaaah!"

"No arms! No legs! Not even a torso!" you shout, hastily bouncing around the room.
"Just bare walls," you continue, "And this orb."
Yes, an orb. Sitting in the dead centre of the perfectly square room was a pedestal.
And on that pedestal, was an orb. A polished ball of glass, with a myriad of colours dancing within.
Something in the back of your mind kindly requested that you stop screaming, it told you that this orb -- is you.

You weren't quite sure what this other presence in the back of your mind was, but let's call it instinct.
"What am I?" you asked this other presence.
No voice rang out. No god-like, thundering voice boomed and told you of your earthly duties.
Instead, you got words. Seemingly hovering in mid-air.

[Basic dungeon rooms cost '3' dungeon points]

What was this thing saying? Dungeon points? A room?
Did you want a room? Hmm. Yes. You weren't quite sure, but there definitely was a feeling inside you that longed for expansion.
There was a lot of you aren't sure of at this point in time, but you were fairly certain that building rooms was a good thing.
It's a great thing. Let's do it. Let's build a room. How do you build a room?

You gave a brief confirmation and more words rushed across your eyeless gaze.

[Goblin headquarters] - Type: Spawn
Your very own goblins. These 3 foot tall critters are a sorry excuse for a dungeon monster. Or being in general.
They are weak, they smell, not very bright, and when they spawn they wake up feeling offended.
You can mentally command them to perform certain duties, but don't expect them to carry their end of a conversation.

Warning: Only one type of creature can exist per floor

Goblin - 1 HP.
Attacks made by goblins force a DC8 Strength saving throw against a single enemy

[Slime pond] - Type: Spawn
Slime time. You will the chamber into a deep pool filled with viscous slime,
Every now and then an entity might crawl out that'll chance a shot at existence, not knowing the grand mistake its making.
They can stick to ceilings and keep the floors clean. They also fight, poorly.

Warning: Only one type of creature can exist per floor

Slime - 1 HP.
Attacks made by slimes force a DC8 Dexterity saving throw against a single enemy

[Marshland] - Type: Trap
This chamber is filled with unsteady ground that will eagerly suck at your feet, but in a non-fetish kind of way.
Adventurers will find themselves rooted in place and, as they struggle, drawn into its murky depths

DC: 5 Strength saving throw for every entity that enters the room

[Pit room] - Type: Trap
This chamber is dotted with pit traps, causing a 10 foot drop.
No spikes at the bottom of these, however. Those cost extra.

DC: 5 Wisdom saving throw for every entity that enters the room

Goblins it is.

There was a deep and concerning amount of rumbling.
The shifting and grinding must've been audible for quite the distance.
Though you seemed to be underground, so hopefully that would dampen it a little?

Then you felt a hint of pain. Like a tiny little pinprick.
A little blue mote of light escaped from the orb. Hovering gently beside it for barely a moment.
It then zipped forward and seemed to twitch in place in front of the wall before you.
You watched in amazement as an opening was carved into the solid chunk of rock.

The mote worked rapidly, yet with precision and care. Like some kind of laser-etching.
In no time at all the mote had cleared out a large space beyond the opening, a full room.
There sure was a lot of space there. You felt the new room click into place and a sense of relief washed over you.
Things had been cramped earlier, but now you had a whole other room to enjoy.
It felt like you finally got the extra leg room you had been craving, even though you didn't have any legs.

You extended your influence towards the room, taking it all in.
That sure was a big room though. You kept expanding yourself, but found your influence halted.
Unable to move further. There was another opening. "Another room?" you guessed.
But no, this wasn't part of you. This was....outside.

"I barely exist and I'm already exposed?" you cried, "What if somebody finds me?"
"Would they want to kill me?" you continued, "Am I worth killing?"
While you were panicking, the little blue mote diligently continued its work.
It began to zip through the room and replaced the cold, stone floor with something akin to dirt dotted with the occasional pebble.
The sound of a blow torch appeared as the mote basically 3D printed some minor details into existence.

There were a few bushes, a campfire that seemed to emit no smoke, and a large tent.
Then the mote briefly looked around for a moment, bobbed up and down to indicate its approval and disappeared in a puff of glitter.

['Goblin warcamp' has been constructed]
[No units found on current floor. Spawning first unit...]

You held your non-existent breath, here it comes.
This was your warrior. Your blade against the darkness.

Something crept out of the tent and got to its feet.
Drool dripped from the corner of the the creature's mouth, which is absent-mindedly slurped back in.
Beady red-eyes glanced at its surrounding, barely registering it. A goblin.
You had no nose, which you were glad for it, because the damn thing LOOKED like it stank.

It used a finger to dig into one of its oversized ears, plucked out a chunk of earwax, and snacked on it.
Finally it plopped onto the ground and began staring at the flames.

You are so dead.
>>
>>5089215

Well, at least things couldn't get much worse.
You are already exposed. You just made a boatload of noise.
And, finally, the only thing standing between you and certain death is a singular goblin.

A small breeze swept through the rocky corridor leading towards your entrance.
Ah, so things could get worse. The outside world is far closer than you'd like it to be.

Can we use our senses to map out the full layout of the buildable area available to us, or at least partially? Immediately opening ourselves up like this isn't the greatest for a fresh dungeon, best way to ensure we don't fuck up like this going forward is to know what we have to work with in terms of space.

It wouldn't surprise me. Dungeon core stories are quite common.
I've read at least a dozen over the years in quest format and a handful in book (LitRPG) format.
The most famous of these is probably the "Divine Dungeon" series by Dakota Krout.

It dawned on you that you were awfully worried about things you knew nothing about.
You didn't even fully understand what you were, only that you have to innate desire to grow. To expand.
As you retreated back into your room, you crept closer to the orb in the middle and pondered the meaning of the swirling colours within.
"I understand that this is me," you hinted at the "Instinct" in the back of your mind, "But I'm unsure what I am."

'Dungeon Cores' are sentient masses of crystalized magic. They hold absolute domain dominion over the contents of your 'Dungeon'.
'These 'Dungeons' are capable of spawning life and are able to expand over time. Adding rooms, creatures, and even entire floors if they so desire.

The small mote of blue light appeared once more and began to zip through the surrounding area.

In a fight, a goblin will charge at a singular opponent and force them into a contest of strength.

There's strength in numbers. One is the loneliest number that'll ever see.
Two can be as bad as one. It's the loneliest number since the number one.

A certain image came to mind. An image of your sad little goblin creature astride a mighty beast.
Well, for lack of horses, the rat would have to do. He could ride in circles in the small chamber.
Maybe teach it tricks. What if the rat is super intelligent? Can identify incoming entities purely by scent?

This rat needs to join your ranks. A beast companion to your goblin. Together, they will be the vanguard.
Together, they will stand between you and all those that would dare to harm you.

"Press forward," you commanded, "Tame this beast and usher in a new age!"

The goblin hastily sucked in the drool dripping from the corner of its mouth and nodded in understanding.
Seemingly skittish, the rat entered the room, but stood at a distance.
Your green-skinned servant inched forward, hand extended in a manner both signalling caution as well as a gesture of peace.

Curiosity seemed to have gotten the better of the rat as it approached in kind, carefully, but with purpose.
They met in the middle, near the fire. A heartfelt moment that would cause you to tear up -- if you could do that sorta thing.
The rat stood up on its hind legs, sniffing the air. An action that brought it face-to-face with the goblin.

The goblin worked the extended hand behind the creature's upper back, bringing his own body body close -- a hug of sorts.
Then the goblin took a quick step forward, dashing past the rat, switched his grip around and went for the RKO.

[Rolled 16 + 3 (1d20 + 3) against the goblin's DC8 save]

Their bodies went down to the dirt, the rat twisting in place, getting itself upright. Seemingly unaffected by the goblin's manoeuvre.
Managing to get itself upright before the goblin, it then pounced and bit down on your green-skinned servant's neck, foul blood spraying everywhere.
Twitching briefly, the goblin died. The body exploded into a shower of sparks and glitter that briefly hovered in the room, but was then sucked back into the dirty tent near the campfire.

The rat seemed pretty smug about it. Rats aren't like to do such a thing, but this one managed it nicely.

running off to try and convince their daughters that, if they thought about it, their current marriages were not really working out.

The kind of adventurer that you, as a self-respecting dungeon, could somewhat be proud of being bested by.
A dungeon might even be able to brag about how it took this adventurer at least an hour before they made it to your central chamber.
The other dungeons might then nod in a solemn, understanding kind of way, a nod that carries a hint of respect – for trying.

The Dungeon had a slight suspicion that a tale about this particular conqueror was best kept to itself.
”Bested by a rat.” the Dungeon murmured to itself, “The only reason it didn’t devour my core was probably because it lacked the necessary thumbs to open the door the next chamber…”

Then, there was a terrible groan – a sound not entirely unlike the sound the average worker makes when they are forced to get up in the morning to go to a job they started hating a decade prior.
The tent-flap of the goblin hut was pushed aside and a familiar little goblin came crawling out, got up to stretch for a brief moment, and began scratching its ass.

Invasion summary: Defeat

It dawned on the Dungeon that it was utterly and hopelessly unprepared for any real invaders.
A dark, solemn destiny awaited the dungeon. Waiting to be killed. Or worse: broken.
At least, that seemed worse.
”Instinct,” said the Dungeon, “What does 'Broken' mean?”

Like when asked previously, there was brief silence.

18 days. Well, it didn’t seem that long, but, if the previous encounter was anything to go by, the Dungeon wasn’t sure it would survive that long.
For now, the Dungeon was going to push all these depressive thoughts aside and focus on the one inner power it did posses.
The power of positive thinking (read: delusion).

The Dungeon glanced over the details of the summary that were still swimming at the edge of his vision.

-------------------------------

Invasion summary: Defeat

All creatures and traps in the dungeon have been bested.
Amount of enemies beaten: 0
Amount of dungeon points (DP) gained: 0
Amount of monster points (MP) gained: 0

-------------------------------

“Seems like I can gain ‘Dungeon Points' by beating enemies and also something called ‘Monster Points’,” it said to itself.
”Instinct, what are you 'Monster Points’?” the Dungeon asked.

-------------------------------

[Investigating term 'Monster Points'.]

Term: Monster Points
Context: Dungeons

Description:
”Monster Points” (Abbreviation: MP) are a resource that dungeons can utilize to upgrade or otherwise enhance monsters on a floor.
These points can be used to alter a “monster spawn“ or alter individual creatures.
An example of this would be upgrading a ordinary, green slime pool to a blue slime pool which produce slimes that carry a hint of the
ice element or upgrading an ordinary slime to a command-type general slime.

-------------------------------

“That’s what I need,” the Dungeon cried, “I need gobo over there to complete some ironman challenges and bulk up!”
With ‘Monster Points’, there was hope. “How do I gain MP?” the dungeon asked eagerly.

-------------------------------

‘Monster Points' (MP) are gained when dungeon creatures defeat enemies.
'Dungeon Points' (DP) are gained at set intervals and when routing an invasive force.

-------------------------------

“Fuck! I can’t even beat a rat!” shouted the Dungeon, but then received a mental tap on the shoulder to check the message again.
The Dungeon peered over the message with squinted eyes, which then went wide, “I get dungeon points for free? How many? When?”

-------------------------------

'Dungeon Points' (DP) are gained once per day.
The amount of 'Dungeon Points' (DP) gained is equal to the amount of floors within the dungeon.

-------------------------------

“So, 1 DP a day for the time being… 3 days for a room…” the Dungeon thought to itself.
That wasn’t so bad. All the dungeon had to do was not die in that time.
The Dungeon glanced at their sole defender, which was currently eating sand.
Thus, the Dungeon waited as fate rolled for random encounters.

Rolling a d20. 5 or lower entails an enemy encounter.
If an encounter is rolled, I’ll then roll on an encounter table.

You still have plenty of time before the thread dies; this board isn't the fastest.
