You know what? You’ve done plenty of training already. Stressing about it the day before the tournament will only be a detriment. So you decide to spend some time with friends, getting Cocoa, Lime, and of course Keli, all to hang out with you for the day. The four of you end up at a shoreside juice bar in a small town south of home. “So… the prize would be a wish or two on the Dragon Balls, right? What would you even wish for?”

“I want to bring Gohan back.” you answer. “I know it’s kinda basic, but… it’s just something I’ve been waiting for ever since he left us.”

Cocoa takes a sip from her drink. “Kinda the expected answer, there.”

“I know, I know…” you reply, rubbing the back of your neck. “Still though, it’s what I want when we win.”

“When, huh?” Lime repeats. “That confident about your chances?”

“Eh, better that she stays positive about this than us worrying over every little thing.” Keli states. “It’s kinda infectious at this point.”

Lime leans forward, a curious look on her face. “How about you then? Got any special wish you want to make?”

Keli thinks quietly for a moment, pondering to herself as she looks down into her drink, twirling its straw in a circle. Under her breath, she vocalizes as if asking herself, “…a ring…?”

Lime tilts her head. “A ring? Huh?”

Keli blushes a little, but smiles. “I might have an idea. But I’d rather keep a lid on it until it’s time.”

Squinting, Lime doesn’t quite like the rather dismissive response, but makes no real effort to pry further. “Well if I were to make a wish, I’d go for something like a… magic wallet that will always come back to me, with all contents intact.”

“Not a million zenni?” Cocoa teases.

Lime waves her hand dismissively. “Psh. I can get that through enough hard work. Might as well use the magical wish on something actually, you know, magical.”

With all your drinks finished, including your baker’s dozen of them, the four of you walk together along the boardwalk near the shoreline. You spot a small arcade up ahead, and further away some game courts for basketball, volleyball, even a softball field. Neat.

Keli grins, but then looks over at Cocoa and Lime. “I dunno, might be a bit much…”

Lime puffs her chest out. “Hah! Let me at that ball, I’ll show YOU a bit much!”

Cocoa looks to you, shrugs and starts… humming something? Wait is that… Danger Zone? Cocoaaaa…

You and Keli decide to pair up, but lower your Ki and instead just take this easy. Cocoa sighs as she walks over to the now even more determined Lime, glancing at you hesitantly. “Hey, hey, come on now! You can handle this! And think of how much she’ll be impressed by us wiping the floor with them!” Lime tries to encourage her.

“Really starting to push the competitive angle beyond the point of reason.” Cocoa responds.

“We’re not going to go full throttle, Cocoa, this is just for fun.” you tell her with a sweet smile. Then, telepathically, you let Keli know, ‘Work on our nonverbal communication?’

‘Sure.’ she agrees, picking up the ball and spinning it on a finger. “Ready? Service!” She tosses the ball into the air, then gently hits it over the net.

Lime manages to hit it back, and you return it, Cocoa running to it. “Hup!” She manages to get it to Lime, who hits it back a bit harder.

You let Keli take the lead, following her movements and subtle directions, and with all the teamwork training the two of you have done, you make this look easy. Lime keeps trying to up the ante, but as well as she’s doing, you and your partner are just far more in sync with each other. Still, you take her seriously, watching her movements with care, not letting your guard down around her. You also keep an eye out for Cocoa, and… you kinda find yourself watching a bit more intently. A smile appears on your face. Ah, Cocoa, she’s so cute and-

THWUNK.

The volleyball hits, and bounces off, your face. You barely feel it as Keli manages to recover the ball and spike it down over the net, still a little fixated on Cocoa. Lime hurrying over and asking if you’re OK manages to bring you back to your senses. “Jeeze, sorry, I thought you were gonna hit that away with, you know, hands, and not your face.”

“Hehe, I’m fine.” you respond with a quick giggle, rubbing the side of your face. “Guess I was getting a little… too relaxed there.”

“Uh-huh.” Cocoa verbalizes, a knowing smirk on her face. Thaaaat gets you to blush a bit more.

Keli chuckles. “Guess you have weaknesses after all.”

“Heeey!” you exclaim, pouting up at her. Bah, whatever. This was a nice, relaxing time with your friends. But come tomorrow, you gotta be ready. You and Keli are in this to win!

You know what? You and Pantea should hang out today. Not do anything major, just relax together. Stressing over training more isn’t gonna help make things that much. So you and the gang head on over to Capsule Corp. again, finding Pantea in her room. “Come on in!” she welcomes. “Sorry about the mess, was working on some research projects.”

There are stacks of papers, a few datapads, even a couple open laptops there, which she quickly tries to clean up and organize via telekinesis. As she does you… spot a couple model kit boxes with half-completed models that were previously buried under the papers. “Huh, don’t think I ever saw any of your Earth mechs that look like that.” Bon Para comments, picking up one of the models.

“Oh, careful, careful!” Pantea requests, offering her hand to let him hand it over. “Sorry, that’s one I want to share Mr. Popo. Been getting a few to share with ‘em next time I head up there.”

You blink, but do kinda recall seeing a few little models Mr. Popo had made last time you were up there. And… oh, right. There was the whole Hirudegarn thing. Probably lost a few of ‘em over that. Man, hard to believe that was almost a year ago. “Kinda doubt your research involves trying to make some Gundams.”

“That’s actually a Masurao.” Pantea points out in clarification. You don’t know what that is but nod along like you understand that. “And no, no, though it is about robotics. Just on a smaller scale.”

Cheelai initially feigns interest until she spots a mostly complete model of a green motorcycle. “Oh huh, that’s neat.”

Pantea’s face lights up upon hearing the genuine interest in her voice. “Ah, now that we actually do have. It’s a model of the Variable 19 Motorcycle, which is equipped with a transformation mechanism that allows it to serve as a three-wheeled vehicle with grappler arms or even a bipedal power armor.” Finishing making her room look decent, Pantea then drinks from a cup of coffee. “Anyway, was nice of ya to come over to hang out, Izzy. Did you have anything you wanted to do?”

A couple hours pass, Pantea having you all play some You Don’t Know Jack! to start off, then moving on to a racing game, and finally Smash. The Para bros end up getting really invested in them, and Cheelai mostly sticks back and watches, though she did somehow end up winning a couple rounds of the first aforementioned game.

“Aaaand gotcha!” Pantea cheers, her character firing a massive, screen-clearing beam. “Haha, and Sammy remains undefeated!”

“Aww man…” Don Para laments as the plumber brothers get blasted off-screen.

As the Princess and Bounty Hunter strike a victory pose, the TV announces: “THIS GAME’S WINNER IS: GREEN TEAM!”

You and Pantea high-five. “Nice work, partner!”

“Guess the team building you two have done even translates to playing games together.” Cheelai remarks, a smirk on her face.

“Heh, looks like. But hey, soon enough we’ll have Gohan back, that’ll be the real test of how much my gaming skills have improved.” you remark, nudging Pantea. “Bet there’s a lot you two want to catch up on.”

She rubs the back of her neck. “Heh, yeah, kinda. Got Chrono Break and the new Metroid soon, but really I’ve been wanting to finish Zelda with him.”

Pantea quietly looks down, a kinda sad smile on her face. After a beat, she nods and replies, “Kinda. I mean, I know a lot of us want to do that, heck Peppa’s probably been waiting for this more than any of us, but… I dunno, maybe it is a little selfish, but I would like to be the one to make that wish.”

“Eh, it’s understandable.” you tell her with a shrug. “And I don’t mean that to tease, honest. The whole business with Baby was mostly dealt with pretty quickly, yet it still felt like something was missing after it was over. This will be the last thing to really put it behind us. Being the one to do it is probably a huge weight off your chest.”

The smile on her face grows less sad and becomes just a bit brighter. “Yeah…”

You slap your knees and stand up, spinning around and grinning at her. “But enough about that, how about something for after the tournament?”

“Oh?”

“Weeeeell, you see, Peppa, and aunt Maple, and myself have kinda started planning this thing with Lime that I think you might be able to help with~” Now this’ll be something you know she’ll get a kick out of. Ohohohoho~

The two of you show up with Lapis, Yamcha, Lazuli, mom, and Krillin, who surprisingly waves to you all as he states. “I see my teammate waiting for me over there.” He turns around to face his daughter. “Marron, I want you to promise you’ll be extra good with Tommy today, okay?”

“Promise!” she responds cheerfully.

Krillin pats her on the head. “Attagirl.”

“And who is this partner, anyway?” you ask.

Krillin looks over to you and smiles, walking over to… wait, is that Nappa?! Pantea puts her hands in her pockets as she tilts her head. “Now that’s gonna make for an interesting match.”

“Yeah, but one we’ll win with ease, right?” you question, already knowing the answer.

“Hah, right! And… hrmn. Not sensing Videl around yet.”

“Probably with Maple at the moment.” Lapis tells her. “She and her partner should be here soon.”

Hrmn, who else is here, then? You see Vegeta and Tien, Chiaotzu and 19, and… waaaait a second. There’s someone in a cloak and mask, but you recognize that Ki, and looks like Pantea does as well. “Well look who decided to show up. Hello Basilea.”

She turns to look at you through her mask, seeming annoyed, but before she can even get a word in…

Gah! Camera flash! Where did-? “Oooooh this is so so sooooo much fun!” some extremely bubbly and upbeat boy’s voice remarks cheerfully. You take a moment to recollect yourself when… wait you know that voice! HIM! HIIIIIM!

Before you stands someone in a similar cloak to Basilea’s, but with… what you can honestly best describe as some kind of wrestler mask if it were made for some TV tokusatsu series hero. With a white ponytail poking out the back of it. Pantea is taken aback slightly by the sudden appearance of this person, even as he starts taking souvenier photos like the world’s most eager tourist. “U-um… do we know you…?”

“Haha! Well not nearly as much as I know the likes of you all. Ooooh this is just perfect, I can’t believe my luck with this!”

Basilea starts marching over towards him, letting out an annoyed grunt.

Your initial hostility towards HIM being here softens a bit when you realize something. Something hilarious. “…Haha. Hahahaha. You’ve been ordered to babysit him, haven’t you, Basilea?”

She growls. “Hrrggh. No. I am here because I have something I need to accomplish. Tagging along with him is just… convenient.”

“Aww don’t be like that, cous! Just think of all the fascinating observations we can make! Think of the cool team attacks! We get to do this all up close and personal! I mean sure, sure, we kinda have to participate ourselves, but that just makes it all the more exciting, don’t you think?” Fu remarks in the same upbeat tone he had before. He then strikes a… rather familiar pose.

Everyone around gives the pair an uneasy look. Pantea though immediately recognizes the pose, and after adjusting her glasses, remarks, “So Izzy was right. You ARE a fan.”

“Oh no.” Basilea breathes out.

Fu giggles with glee. “Ah I knew you were a lady of high taste, Pantea. But more to the point, I bet you’re also just bursting with curiosity over what you can see all your friends can do. Oh, oh, actually, can you scoot in a little closer with Izzy?” He takes another picture. Basilea reaches for his camera, only for him to keep it away from her without even looking.

…And that gives you an idea or two. “Look, Fu, tell you what. If you can keep yourself under control for the tournament, no messing with matches, no… weird demon world plots, and I think we can reach an agreement that benefits all parties.” You then scoot a bit closer. “That, and I’ll sign a couple photos. Just make sure you get my good side~” You add a wink for good measure.

Fu goes silent all of a sudden. He then holds out his hand, in a comically serious deadpan, replies, “Deal.”

You shake on it. “I mean, for as smart as you… present yourself as, you probably are already aware just you being here is probably having some dramatic changes. Wouldn’t want TOO many variables going awry.”

There’s a sheen of light that reflects out of his mask’s eyeholes. “Hehehe, oh I am quite aware of the observer effect, and if anything I intend to use it intentionally. Within… reason, of course.”

Basilea, giving up trying to take his camera away, instead grabs him by the ear. “Do not make me regret agreeing to being your partner, ‘cous.’”

“Yeah, yeah, take a picture, it’ll last longer.” Basilea snarks at her. And Fu does just that. “WOULD YOU STOP THAT?!”

“Heeey Peppa. Feeling ready to take on everyone?” you ask.

“Keli and I are ready to win this.” she responds confidently.

You raise an eyebrow. “Is that so? Well we’ll see how your teamwork matches against ours!”

Keli and Pantea both look at one another and laugh. “While she’s a bit more blunt about it than I am, I guarantee I’m aiming for the same goal as her.” Keli states.

“Heh, then we’ll have to see how much of that training paid off.”

Finally you sense some others start to arrive, most everyone apparently here. There are Goku and Tarble, Maple and Acer, and Videl and… actually a few other folks. Oh hey the Ginyus! Someone else too, seems to be hiding their Ki. Hmm… hey wait, that’s another familiar presence a bit further away, though one you’re not exactly sure you know all that well. Feels like… someone from the World Tournament? Though a different one with ‘em you think you’ve felt not too long ago. Huh.

I do like that you commissioned some art, and am super jelly that Kato used it as an OP image I still don't see what was so bad about pic related! but getting everything about what you want the artist to draw isn't a walk in the park, you gotta review details and drafts and make sure perspective is right and that pics are referenced instead of "traced" so you don't get loonies on your case like here. The difference between borrowing something and stealing it. People are going to know you borrowed a pose, but if you can steal that pose and change it up a little, they won't say you're stealing.

Anyway, you walk off in the general direction of the Ginyus and co, though you think to ask, “Pantea, Peppa, Keli, any of you recognize those other visitors?”

Pantea rubs her chin. “…Kinda. Seems to be three of them, and at least two feel familiar.”

Peppa finally makes the connection, and her eyes narrow. “Oh I know exactly who they are. One is Ledgic. And the other… is Mugen.” Her tail moves around her waist, arms crossing as she walks, looking down and thinking. “Why would he be here in-person, though? Last few times, he was content to stay on his ship and act all mysterious and snarky.”

Oh that IS a good question. But that leaves the other mystery fighter with them. Might have to check ‘em out next. You make it to where Maple and the Ginyus and Videl and dad all are, and… well. You were expecting Videl. You weren’t expecting her dressed like THAT.

“Okay boss, now remember, the cape can be a target, so you gotta stay aware of it at all times. Your tail should help while in combat, but if needed you can use telekinesis on it too.” Ginyu instructs a smaller figure in an outfit strikingly similar to Videl’s. Purple tunic, black jumpsuit, flowing chestnut-colored cape, with a black belt… showing Kuriza’s logo on it.

“Of course, of course, we’ve been practicing for all this time, Captain Ginyu.” the boy acknowledges, smiling wide. “Videl and I are headed to the top of this competition.”

Videl chuckles, then looks over to all of you as you arrive. “Ah, hey guys. Heh, looks like it’s finally time to let you in on our secret.” She meanwhile has a teal-blue outfit with a red cape, her belt’s logo being an… admittedly cool little devil horn one.

“And it’s good that she did! Maple always did have an eye for aesthetics.” Captain Ginyu comments. “Lord Kuriza was ever so happy to get such a dashing tag team costume.”

Kuriza himself nods. “It fits my natural look quite nicely, and while I must say I do slightly prefer the armor common of the PTO in terms of looks, this is a more than acceptable substitute.” He then holds his cape out, swooshing around with it. “Plus look at this! It’s so cool! Fits nicely with my gems too.”

Videl giggles again. “Well, can’t argue there. It’s not exactly what I had in mind at first, but… eh, I’ve been able to make it work.”

“I think it looks good on you. Got an almost superhero vibe to it.” Peppa remarks. “Scarf might be cool too, but eh, you’re rocking that cape.”

You place your hands on your hips. Videl and Kuriza, huh? Can’t say you expected this pair, but… then again, Pantea’s plenty strong on her own, and Videl is at least on her level. Pairing up with Kuriza might actually have some tactical benefits you should be wary of. Plus… while maybe the outfits themselves might not QUITE match your own tastes, something can be said about the presentation, the showmanship. Maybe think about applying that to your own Mahou outfit? Thoughts for later. Maybe something the Hakkero could- WAIT. WAIT.

“Kuriza, sorry if this is out of the blue, but if you have the time later, might I ask you if the PTO has some things about a planet called Z’S? Might be able to collaborate and find some things that are useful for ya’.”

Pantea frowns slightly as you say that, though she holds her tongue and looks over to Kuriza. Who himself seems intrigued. “Hmmm. Z’S… yes, I do recall you mentioning it before, Videl. Well! I guess I could collaborate some with you, Izumi. After the tournament, of course.”

Yessss. Perfect. Okay, what else?

Eventually you all arrive near Ledgic and Mugen, and see a rather… interesting scene. “All right guys, now I know you might have some… prior disagreements with some of the fighters here, but I should remind you, this is still a job I’ve hired you for. There are rules to follow. Aaaaaand potential strong fighters to recruit.” the extravagant form of the Machine Mutant comments to Ledgic and another person as a… sort of form of pep talk? While Ledgic is fairly clear, the other individual seems to be cloaked and suppressing their Ki. Kind of a big guy, though. Both fighters take notice of you, saying nothing, but it does draw Mugen’s attention to you. “Ahaa! Son Peppa, we meet face to face. And you must Izumi.” He approaches and shakes Peppa’s hand, to her confusion, and then attempts to shake yours.

His synthetic but smooth voice chuckles. “Hahaha, oh no, nothing like that. Good questions though!” He leans forward, and seems to smile. “Maybe one of my goals is restoring a world. Or… maybe one of my wishes has to do with acquiring something one can not normally get. Either way, I think it’s better as a sort of… surprise, don’t you?”

Peppa frowns. “You assume your team is going to win.”

Ledgic and the other figure glance at her. You meanwhile have been studying this mystery fighter carefully, trying to find any noteworthy features. The bulky clothes and cloak obscure a lot, he even wears a mask that covers up to his nose, but you do spot that the person has a noticeable brow ridge, but no eyebrows. Skin is a pale green too, and… you think he has some kind of head ornamentation, maybe a tail? Cuuuurious.

“I must admit, though it was not truly a priority, my participation in the previous one certainly was more entertaining than I anticipated it being.” Shin adds in.

“Heh, yeah. Though I guess you were more like… sparring with mom than really fighting her. More just waiting to draw out the stuff with Babidi.” You lean back a bit yourself, having a handful of popcorn as you watch from the massive, theater-sized crystal ball, then letting Buu have a handful.

“Mmmh.” Kibito mutters in an almost pout.

“Come on big guy, you aren’t still that salty over losing to Izzy and Sachie, are you?” you ask him a little teasingly.

Kibito narrows his eyes. “No.”

A bit back behind you all, Grand Supreme Kai and South Supreme Kai watch on with curiosity. Near you and Buu, King Kai sits with Olibu, Izumi, and Great Grandpa Gohan. Even Pikkon and Torbie ended up joining you all for this. Seeing Fu and Basilea in the crowd, even masked, is… interesting, though it does make you wonder what their goal is.

That thought is brushed aside as soon as you hear the elder Gohan ask you, “Soooo… who ya rootin’ for? Sister and her friend? Mom and uncle? Cousin and… crush?”

Izumi gently baps him on the head with a folded paper fan. “None of that commentary this time, please.”

“Haha…” Well… that is a good question though. You look back to the crystal ball. Who DO you root for in such a tournament?

“And so, allow me to welcome you all to the Mifan Tag Tournament!” Pilaf declared to the cheering crowds. Beside him sat Baozi, dressed in more royal attire than his norm, with General Blue standing next to him, looking on attentively. Mai and Shu stood near Pilaf, the Emperor continuing his introductory speech. “A grand total of 64 fighters have registered for this Tournament, meaning we will have 32 teams to go through. This will be split up as follows: today will have 16 matches, single elimination, forming a bracket with a finalist team. Tomorrow will be much the same, and once both finalist teams have been selected, our third and final day will have a dedicated match between these two finalist teams. Once the Mifan Champion has been decided, I will grant the pair any wish within my power… plus there will be a cash prize for every finalist and semi-finalist!”

A double bracket tournament, huh? Guess that does make things a bit more interesting. But it also might mean you won’t even fight today. Kinda… hope that isn’t the case here, but that’s down to the luck of the draw. Keli gives you a gentle nudge with her elbow. “So, Peppa, be honest. What team are you looking forward to facing the most?”

“Oof. Tough call to make. Let me think…” Let’s see. Mom and uncle Acer, Videl and Kuriza, Pantea and Izzy, Mr. Satan and Teach, Vegeta and Tien, Raditz and Piccolo, Fu and Basilea, dad and Tarble… so many choices…

“To start us off, we will have the reigning champions, Chuu Lee and Mark Satan, be the first pair to find their spot on the brackets!” Pilaf calls out, the two being guided to a paired computer terminal with a large red button in the center. “Please input your names and press the button to begin.”

You look down and rub your chin. “I’d like to face…”

Videl and I have been waiting for our rematch for a long time, but also I feel like Kuriza’s been wanting a proper match against me for a while. Plus they’ve been pretty secretive over their training, and seeing how it matches against ours will be interesting to see.” You watch as Chuu Lee and Mr. Satan end up taking the #5 slot on the first bracket. “The second one is Vegeta and Tien. It would serve as a really good test of how far… well, basically all of us have come. It was through beating Vegeta that I really became Champ, yet he’s gotten even stronger since then. And for you, well, you’d go head to head with Tien, master against student.”

“Plus I’ll be honest, still kinda think Vegeta’s a bit of a jerk.” Keli comments to you quietly.

“Hehe, a bit… but he is trying. And I can respect that.” You see mom and uncle next… and they end up in the #17 slot. The second bracket. One by one the roster fills up, and then, you and Keli are called forward. The two of you put your names in. “Ready for this?”

“Absolutely.” she confirms.

You both press the big red confirmation button… and end up at the #7 slot! “Lucky!” you cheer, pumping your fist in the air.

“We are about halfway through now, next up we have…” Pilaf looks at the list a bit closer. “Er, um. Ledgic and… Nox? Am I reading that right?”

Nox. So that’s that guy’s name. Kinda… different. The pair silently confirm their names and… are at the very end. Slot #32. They look over to Mugen, who’s in the crowd with… shuttered sunglasses and what you think is a margarita, complete with tiny umbrella, in his hand. Well, he’s taking this rather casually.

“Right then! Next up… er, Devil Mask and Mirai Kamen…?”

Basilea and Fu walk forward, Basilea in a bit of a march and Fu moving casually. #10 slot. Your bracket. Vegeta and Tien are called next… and they end up at #16. Videl and Kuriza. #1.

“Lucky break for you.” Keli says with a cheeky grin. “They’re even on opposite ends of our bracket.”

“Oh hey! Nice to meet you again.” you greet with a smile.

Keli looks at the person beside her, a human girl about your age with short brown hair, a predominantly brown and white outfit, and the biggest tan scarf you’ve ever seen. “…And I don’t believe I’ve seen you around before. You are…?”

“Kokoro Belmondo!~ Ace pilot and supernatural exterminator extraordinaire!” she declares proudly. “Just helpin’ her out to smooth over some… bad blood with my clan and her family, so to say.”

Wait. WAIT A SECOND. BUULA?! You look over briefly and spot her in a heavier cloak, but still recognizable as, well, her. And beside her seems to be… an odd figure. Someone with golden skin, a large tail, and horns on his head. He… kinda looks like Kuriza? Or Cooler? But you don’t sense any malicious intent from within him. Well, they’ve got enough people staring at them already, so you should focus on this Kokoro girl. “So you’re… an ace pilot? Here at this martial arts competition?” you ask, more out of curiosity than criticism. How old is she?

“Yep! Been able to fly a ship for years now.” She flips a Capsule in the air, catching it and winking.

“And you’re like… some kind of Ghostbuster or somethin’? That’s cool. I’d love to hear more about it some time.”

“Not so much ‘ghostbusting’ as dealing with all sorts of spooks and creeps and monsters. You know, evil castles popping out in places they don’t belong and knockin’ around those responsible. Bit of a clan tradition of mine, that one. Buuut we’re tryin’ to make nice with Sibella’s pops and put some of that behind us.” Kokoro explains. “Anyway, we’re gonna start getting ready. Nice to meet ya!”

You place your hands on your hips and nod. “Same. See you at our match.”

“Now that we all know today’s matches, tomorrow’s will be as follows!

You look up at the screen as the names are called out. Certainly an interesting lineup. Mom and uncle Acer’s match sounds like it’ll be over pretty quick… and Izzy and Pantea are facing Guldo and Recoome, huh? That’ll be fun. Though Ledgic and that Nox guy are against 16 and… who is Captain Chicken? You look over and see a man in a superhero chicken outfit. Well. What did you expect, Peppa?

The matches look to be underway soon, so might be best to head into the waiting area, or maybe you could grab a snack or two, chat with some folks. Could also try and spot some friends from among the crowd.

“Eh, couldn’t hurt.” she says with a shrug. “Just… nothing with ghost peppers, please.”

“I promise to keep them to myself only.” Oh but now you kinda want some. Ah well, it can wait. Telepathically, you next inform her, ‘We can also strategize for a bit. Get our heads in the game as the first match starts.’

‘Ah, I getcha.’

You arrive at a small buffet table, loading up a plate with some food and quickly heading back to the waiting area, poking your head out a window as you see the fighters approach the ring. Videl and Kuriza fist bump, looking down to their foes, the mummy girl and werewolf girl. ‘I didn’t fight them myself, but I do recall Gohan facing them. From what I heard, Tannis, the mummy girl, can pull off some pretty skilled Magics, even materialization, while Elsa is more a physical fighter, but she does have some electric attacks.’

‘So, paralyze and bind would be their strategy in this, yeah?’ Keli questions, taking a bite of a pita filled with shrimp taco toppings. Pita taco. Pretty clever.

‘Highly likely.’ You chow down on a spicy beef and rice dish, using a little bit of telekinesis to have the beans in there march around the edge if it before hopping into your mouth. ‘The real thing to focus on, Kuriza and Videl. This will be the first we see of what they’re capable of.’

Videl steps back to the partner section of the ring, Elsa doing much the same. Kuriza looks at his foe with a confident smile. “Fighters ready? BEGIN!”

Tannis starts things off by tossing her bandages forward, with Kuriza easily dodging them, swerving around and making it look easy. Eventually there are bits of bandages all over the floor beneath him, with the boy asking her, “So, is that opening move done, or did you have something more in store?”

Tannis then somehow commands them to move on their own, trying to have them grab Kuriza’s limbs. Once she thinks she gets a couple on, she rushes in for a headbutt. Kuriza simply jumps over her, but… “Elsa, tag in!”

“HIIIIIYA!” Elsa makes for an electrified dropkick as Tannis heads out, the bandages on Kuriza’s limbs making his movements a little sluggish. He’s just barely able to get out of the way, his cape fluttering as the kick grazes past it.

‘Curious strategy. Does this mean he’ll switch too?’ Keli inquires.

You look over at Videl… who isn’t making any indication she’ll move a muscle. In fact, she simply looks on, arms crossed. ‘No. Kuriza’s got some way to beat this.’

“Admirable teamwork!” the boy emperor praises. He then places a hand on one of the bandages at his left arm. “But you’ll need more than that to match us.” And… Magic flows through his hand, the bandage freezing and shattering. Welp. Kuriza’s got some pretty good control over Ice Magic. Elsa looks surprised, not expecting to work. He then slams his foot on the floor, Ice spreading across the ring. Elsa jumps up to avoid it, but slips the moment she lands back down. Kuriza meanwhile slides gracefully across it, almost like he’s ice skating. “Especially when I’m in my element.” His tail trips her again, before sliding away and striking a pose, declaring, “Victory is assured!” and holding up a V-sign.

And as if on cue, he and Videl switch, with her now launching into the ring. “Eagle Kick!” Elsa can’t even block it, taking the full force and sliding across the floor. Videl floats in midair, cape fluttering slightly. “That the best you’ve got?”

Well, they definitely have their teamwork down. And you can tell these aren’t the only tricks up their sleeves.

Elsa is finally able to get back up and calls out to Tannis to switch, the mummy girl materializing some ice cleats for herself and leaving another pair for Elsa as she leaps into the ring. She attempts to keep some distance between herself and Videl, throwing out more bandages but also firing off a few Geist Magnum shots to keep her distracted. That doesn’t work in the slightest, Videl merely firing relatively weak ki blasts in return to stop them as she closes in. She then manages to grab Tannis by the arm and starts to swing her around.

Elsa tries to jump in for an assist, only for Videl to catch her by the leg, now spinning both of them around. Once they’re sufficiently dazed, she tosses them both on the ground, shattering the ice field where they land. “Ooogh… can someone tell the floor to stop… spinning… blegh…” Tannis tries to stand back up, wobbling and dizzy.

Elsa manages a bit better, but she isn’t ready for Kuriza to skate back in and trip her one more time with his tail. “Ey! Would you stop that?!”

“Okay!” he replies cheerfully. “Tag!” He places his hand on her back.

“T-tag?” Elsa repeats, confused.

“You’re it.” He then pushes her into Tannis with a kiai, the pair skidding across the ice yet again. Kuriza skates over to them, circling the pair as they try to get up. “I really must praise you for your creative techniques. But as Videl has driven into my head many times already, it seems there was something you didn’t account for.”

“Oh I’ll show you something to account for you little…!” Elsa starts to chase him around the ring, even trying for an electrified punch that just barely misses his cape.

Hands behind his back, Kuriza goads her into following him, finally getting back to Tannis before she is able to make it out of the combat zone, grabbing her with his tail and flinging her at Elsa. The pair collapse into a heap, beaten and exhausted. Kuriza pulls one hand from behind his back, pointing it at them palm-forward… and counts down. “Five… four… three… two… one.”

“Tannis and Elsa have been in the ring for over 20 seconds, Videl and Kuriza advance!” Pilaf declares, to the cheering of the crowds.

The ghouls bemoan their loss, but Videl floats over and helps them both up. “Hey, you both still did a good job. Nice match.”

‘So, any thoughts on that, Peppa?’ Keli asks you.

>A. Kinda expected this outcome, but curious that they weren’t really going all-out. We’ll need to keep an eye out for next round

This reminds me, does switching out require us to actually say we are doing so? Because doing it telepathically is easier to surprise folks with. It'll give away that we are doing so, but I don't see a disadvantage in that.

Think out what you’ve seen. ‘If I’m being completely honest, I kinda expected that outcome, but I do find it curious by how much they kinda held back. Didn’t go all out and end the fight quickly, instead relying on their teamwork and learned skills. We’ll definitely need to keep an eye out for the next round.’ You finish up some teriyaki gyros. Hmm. What else? ‘They were very composed and in-control, and the mild taunting was just enough to be effective and bait their opponents out without making it too obvious. Disrupting that teamwork by breaking one of the fighters’ cool might be enough to turn things around. At the same time, they also worked to conserve a lot of their power, exhausting their foes and avoiding much physical contact. We can’t afford any wasted movements.’

‘All right. Videl looks like the powerhouse of the duo, while Kuriza’s more tricky. Think we should focus on him more?’ Keli inquires.

With the ring cleared of ice, the next two teams step in. Yamcha and Lapis vs. Jeice and Burter. The teams greet one another rather jovially, with Yamcha and Jeice taking the lead and staring one another down. “So, how much has your batting score improved, mate?”

Yamcha cracks his knuckles and takes a fighting stance. “Heh, I actually managed to go for a whole new record. But my focus has been more on helping my fellow Taitans improve. You sure you don’t wanna join us for a season, Jeice? You’d easily be a star pitcher, and I’m sure you could help ‘em out a bit too.”

He smirks. “Now that’s a temptin’ offer, but I’m plenty happy with my lot in the Ginyu Force. Besides, with us together it wouldn’t be fair to any other team on this planet.”

“Fighters ready? BEGIN!”

Okay! Now gather up your bowls and get a few more bits for yourself. Along the way you sense out the crowd again, finding a few friends there. Sharpner, Pen, Erasa… ah, there’s Cocoa and her family! Oh, huh, seems like Monty and his family are actually here as well, though in a VIP section… though you can sense Cheelai and the Para bros with them. And… wait, Lime’s there too! Oooohoohoho!~ Perfect, just perfect.

You pass by a table with dad, Vegeta, Raditz, Nappa, and Tarble all on it, the former four chowing down hurriedly to make sure they’re all full before their fights, while Tarble’s more modest but still packing away the bowls. Oh, huh, there’s another person on the table there too, guy with a spiky black mohawk, with a silver-haired boy chatting beside him. “Hey dad! Uncle Raditz! Mr. Nappa! Mr. Tarble! Vegeta.”

“Peppa.” he grunts in acknowledgement before comping down on a steak.

“Heyh Pehpuh!” dad greets cheerfully, trying some- ooooh that looks good! He’s got a massive drumstick wrapped in bacon… wait, not just any bacon!

“Eeeeyyyy is that jalapeno bacon?!” you ask excitedly.

Goku nods and remembers to swallow. “Yeah, and they’re ostrich drumsticks! There’s a bunch of ‘em over towards the south end. Better hurry though, Godzilla was eyeing them last I saw.”

You make a dash towards that table, getting a giant plate and grabbing a few drumsticks before they’re gone, loading up with a few more things too. Pistachio pork ribs? That’s somethin’ new to try! Oh oh oh, cheese bread and what looks like some vegetable soup! There we go! All set now!

As you start walking back, you spot mom talking with the ghouls. “The cleats were a great move to compensate for the change in the ring, but still needed to account for their mobility. Especially Kuriza’s tail, that really got ya.” she instructs. “You two did well though, don’t be so down on yourselves.”

“Evidently not well enough.” Tanis sighs out.

“Yeeaaaaahh…” Elsa bemoans.

“If you don’t mind me interjecting a bit…” you start, approaching them while holding the massive plate of food behind you with telekinesis. “I think what was missing was an ace in the hole, or up the sleeve, or… wherever else you can hide an ace, I guess.”

Mom snaps her fingers. “Yeah! Some trick to really trip ‘em up.” She glances over at Ginyu and his partner, then winks at them… gueeeessing she’s talking telepathically about what he can do. Your suspicions are confirmed when the ghouls’ faces light up in surprise. “Something few fighters can really see coming.”

“Maybe I could help ya train for it once this is over. If you don’t mind me tagging along, mom.” you add in.

“Hah, not at all. Might be a big help for all of them, really.” she says with a nod.

Tanis then notices some of the food items on your plate, sheepishly asking, “U-um… are those pistachio ribs?”

“Hm? Oh, yeah! I was gonna try ‘em. Actually… here.” You split the rack in two. “Here ya go. More on the table over there. Oh, Elsa, you want any?”

“Cheesy bread…” she responds as if hypnotized by it.

“There ya go!” Well, they may have lost their match, but no reason their time here can’t be a good memory!

You finally get back to Keli, seeing Yamcha, Lapis, Burter, and Jeice still fighting. “So, how’ve they been doing?”

“Pretty interesting strategy. Jeice and Burter are going for constant switching, every time Jeice is in he tries for a fastball Ki blast, then immediately switches so Burter can bolt forward and get a couple quick hits in, then gets back out so Jeice can try for another fastball. Looks like they’re focusing on wearing down their foes’ stamina. Lapis meanwhile keeps trying to act support for Yamcha, deflecting hits where he can and trying to slow Burter down.” she explains.

You look outside and see sparks around Burter’s aura as he does just as Keli described, dashing into the ring and just narrowly missing Yamcha as he ducks under his fist. He fires a Ki blast at Burter in retaliation, but Burter’s already outside of the ring and Jeice is back in, trying for another Ki blast. Well, seems Burter’s using the Raio-ken to augment his speed… wait, you spot something. ‘Keli, look closer to the ground. They’re small, but there are still some Ki blasts laying on the ground. Kinda like my own Ki mines, just on top instead of underneath.’

‘Ah, so you’re right.’ She rubs her chin, then smirks. ‘I think I know Yamcha and Lapis’ strategy now.’

“Come on mate, you’re better than this!” Jeice declares. “You gonna just up and disappoint me like this?” The next energy blast he readies is one about the size of his torso, firing it down at Yamcha as he flips back out of the ring.

And right as Burter gets in… a Ki blast hits him in the back. Then one from the side. Another from above. He’s caught completely off-guard as they barrage him from all over. It’s not enough to stop him on their own… but they don’t need to be. Yamcha has caught Jeice’s attack and launches it right towards Burter, knocking him down on his back. And the moment he tries to get back up…

“Wolf! Fang! FIST!” Yamcha’s already on top of him, pummeling him and finishing with a double palm strike that puts him down for the count. Yamcha wipes his brow. “Whew! That was getting a little dicey there.”

“Gh! Damn! All right, now you’ve done it!” Jeice tries to jump back into the ring, only for Lapis to teleport in right next to Yamcha, forming a barrier around Jeice. “…Ah crapbaskets.”

“Finisher! Wolf Fang HOMERUN!” He lands another double palm strike against the barrier Jeice is in, Lapis ensuring he’s stuck in there, with both bolting right out of the ring and into the wall outside.

“YAMCHA AND LAPIS ADVANCE! What a marvelous showing!” Pilaf declares.

Keli stretches her arms a bit. ‘Quite the combo at the end there. What do you think, Peppa?’

Watching the last two groups walk back into the waiting area, Keli asks you, “So, you think we should head out there? We’re up next.”

“Might as well.” you confirm.

Sibella and Kokoro are already making their way to the ring, Kokoro especially looking quite excited to get things started. “Just so you know, miss Champion, we’re plenty aware of all the tricks you can pull. We’ve done our research.” she states confidently. “And sure, you’re probably one of the biggest obstacles in this Tournament, but we’re not gonna back down.”
