Life springs into existence on a lonely planet, saturating a wide archipelago with several species. Whether they're natives, some sort of extra-terrestrial monster, or interdimensional lifeforms, they're here to stay (hopefully) and partake in the bountiful resources of this watery world! In the end, which will claim dominance over the planet and become the dominant species?

==
Got slots for 5-8 players! I'm the Crabs and Gloupes from the past few games, and got permission from Qm Bid to run of these.

Some previous threads, in case anyone wants to catch up and see how it works.

>Joining the game
Taking part is really simple! If you're not sure, click on a previous thread to see how submissions worked.
Draw your species in Paint (or whichever simple doodling program) and post it in your comment.
Tell us something about the function of your species, and decide where it starts on the map. No starting on the same tile, or adjacent to another player, so it's on a first-come-first-serve basis.
I'll stat your species accordingly and give you a starting sheet.

>Actions
Each turn you can do 1 of 2 actions
Expand your species
Roll 1d3+1, the score is the maximum amount of tiles your species can expand to. Choose a tile with your species on the map and 3 adjacent tiles nearby. Your species will then expand from this tile to those adjacent tiles. You can also choose to migrate them by 2 tiles.

>Evolve your species
Roll 1d100
Choose a species on a tile that you want to evolve, then choose 1 attribute to improve of the 6 base attribute: Environment, Size, Sensors, Camouflage, Digestion, Toxic.
according to your fluff and score, your species will also receive a special evolution trait that will change their playstyle and help them.

More detailed rules are in the op image, and there'll be a second post to clarify some things. Please feel free to ask for clarification if there's anything you'd like to know.
--

The game will update daily, and each turn, I'll ideally want to finish it within 24 hours. Looking for people who can commit! And would love to see some new players too.

Here's a guide on how to take your turn. PLEASE attach a photo when you do, with arrows pointing to expansions. And if you evolve, please clearly state what attribute you're changing. Flavor text is encouraged, but at least add in the plain term in brackets.

If you make a mistake in posting, I'll gladly change it for you as long as nobody else has posted yet, or if it's a small enough change to be justified. This only applies to mistakes in phrasing or maybe forgetting to use a free expansion, and only if you realise in a short enough timespan. If you make a turn that's valid, but just turns out to be a bad move, no takebacksies.

-
The special tile types are:
Forest- Present on some land tiles, and provide +1 camo to creatures. The ones with palm trees and normal trees are the same, it’s just aesthetic.

Swamp- +1 toxic to creatures. Swamps are in the shallows.

Mountains: creatures can thrive self sufficiently at +1 additional size, but receive a thriving disadvantage if their sensors + digestion is less than their size

The Delgi are a weird kind of species, descending from an herbivorous forest dwelling species that moved to the nearby plains to feast on their tasty grass. There, a native species of insect found a place to nest, building colonies of chewed up fiber on the backs of these relatively huge things. The Delgi found themselves capable of finding better food by following the sounds the colony made, while the insects were happy to have found a moving colony- before that, they had to relocate every time the surrounding fields ran dry of food.

The hives are quite toxic to species not adapted to eating them, while the Delgi themselves are capable of seeing many things with those enormous eyes, the insects suddenly hiding in their backs being another sure indication of a predator nearby

>>5064357

The Tataka quickly spread out and claim the surrounding volcanic regions, staking their claim on the ashlands. Some wander down into the southern jungles, but find little success in this new environment.

>>5064358
>>5064360

After travelling across the seas for generations, the gentle giants reach the continent and begin wandering onto it, testing the waters and seeing what resources they can glean from it.

>>5064383
>>5064385

Soon, the shallows are saturated with a dominant organism: The Limubud, that crawls across the swampland and fills the air with its sweet, deadly tang. The southern population finds a competitor, however...

>>5064476

With no competition, the Firenewt fare well as they spread across the wasteland. Several move onto the spacious mountains, boasting treacherous terrain, but plentiful hiding spots and potential lairs.

>>5064485
>>5064488

Using their little legs, the Namloos wander the jungles and hitch rides on wandering organisms. Soon, the forest floor is coated with these organisms.

>>5064491

Hitching a ride on other hosts, the parasitic worms spread across the land, infecting organisms and faring far better than them. Some move into the seas, where the excessive moisture causes them issues, and some move north into the swamps, where they encounter an organism that they can't quite seem to infect...

>>5064497
>>5064502

The Guts wanders the surrounding territory, leaving its markings behind and claiming the land for itself. Perhaps its claim over this territory will be contested in the future, but for now, all who enter it know that the continent has a master lurking in wait.

>>5064927
>>5064954

Feasting off the plentiful organic matter of a young world, the Tentor finds great success when spreading into the seas!

>>5064966

The amorphous Mush Bun spread across the snow, hiding within it and multiplying in vast quantity.

The Ashen Islands the Tatako call home are ringed on either side by shallow seas. Slowly approaching the waters with apprehension, they swiftly realize their internal body magma cannot survive in the water.

Developing thick burrowing claws and a tail, the Tatako learn to burrow magma tunnels from beneath their volcanic homeland into the surrounding waters, lava tubes acting as nests. They lay in wait near these nests, dragging their prey from the environment above to be digested in hollowed out lava chambers

What does advantage and minor advantage do?
>>
>>5065351
It determines thriving order. Under the thriving section in the first post, it falls under number 3. Thriving advantages/disadvantages stack to determine who thrives on a tile, in the event that nobody is eating or being eaten. 'minor' and 'major' are considered to be a sort of 0.1 modifier.
>>

>>5065359
Yep, you pick one tile, and the new generation starts from there. Here's an example of how it'll look next turn, after everything is processed. Only one tile evolves, and they'll expand from that point.
>>
>>5065360
Ok one final question. How does environment work? Is it where you can live or is it where your species can thrive? For example the Takata has the environment for mountains yet he also has a species on a forest tile.
>>
>>5065366
It's where they can thrive. The Takata on the forest tile isn't thriving, as it's impossible to thrive on a tile you're not adapted to. They can exist, but they're first on the list to go extinct if the tile gets saturated with species.

You can evolve to live on a tile if you're adjacent, or on a tile of that type. And if your creature evolves while neither on, nor adjacent to an environment, it'll lose the adaptation for that tile.

Picking the tile counts as the attribute for the evolution. But there's an alternate way to gain the ability to survive on it, which is to gamble on getting a trait to survive on an environment. This comes with disadvantages, but is permanent and won't be lost if the species evolves elsewhere.

As time goes on the family of Tentor gradually develops a tail. They use this new development to float along with the ocean current while resting. This allows them to travel much greater distances than before since now they can be moving at all times. Due to the most vibrant of the Tentor being eaten, they slowly develop a form of camouflage allowing them to blend in with the ocean floor as a rock.
After such a large change this species is is entirely new and is thus called the Tentori

Ah, I think there was some confusion about the expansion. You can only choose one tile to expand from, and that tile can expand in any direction, for as many points as you have. That's the main expansion. You can't split it among all your populations.

And creatures who did not use the main expansion can use a secondary one, to expand by one tile. You can see how >>5066098 Tataka did it, where his gen 2 expanded left and right, and his gen 1 expanded with a free move.

> evolve the central Delgi into a Burelgi (+1 toxic)
The mobile hives saw predators approaching, but found they, unfortunately, could not fight back- nor could they run away for that matter, their legs too short to escape the disgusting beings and their long reaching weapons.

And so, as natural selection does, the survivors were the ones best fit to thrive in this hostile environment: the ones who could not be hunted.
And why was it that they could not be hunted? Because their insects were blessed with stingers filled with a painful poison, allowing them to Pierce the skin of hunters who tried to get a bite out of their carriers, even developing the tactic of stabbing through the colony’s walls in case the hive itself was bitten or hit in any way

The swarms of the Delgi were confused by this new species in their environment- what was THIS?! A thing of fire, whose smoke filled their tiny lungs and made their carriers run? No no NO this would not stand! No matter the sacrifice, these intruders would be drawn out.

And so, for the first time, the insects began gathering in “patrols” around their hives, aggressively stinging whoever came into range with such furor that some of the newts outright perished under the assault

Yeah, you already rolled the dice and got your expansion, it wouldn't be fair to let it be changed to a migration or evolution. You're going to have to expand.

The struggling Durelgi are slowly dying out amidst the fierce competition with their ancestors, swarm fighting swarm in a fratricidal clash, while their enemies strengthen.
Then, as if through some proto-messianic prophecy had come to fruition, a new species makes its debut: the Comelgi.
With their pacifying musks, they possess the ability to coordinate the swarms of their ancestors into something much greater: a unified species, one single swarm, to assist the entirety of the species as a whole instead of single herds

IG: This species does not receive an attribute this evolution. When on a house tile, this species is considered to be one size larger. As part of the migrate action, you may choose to remove a house tile that you are standing on, transforming it into an unclaimed tile. Your migration destination will then have the house tile moved onto it. When migrating with a house tile, you may choose to eradicate one creature up your size, that does not have more camouflage than your sensors, and does not have a self-defense/fighting trait. Thriving disadvantage when on a house tile.

>>5075629

The world continues to destabilise. Rolling to see exactly what crisis strikes...

>1: Solar storm
1d4 random tiles on the northmost and 1d4 tiles on the southmost rows will get Ionized by the solar storm, all none-thriving species on those tiles will die

>2: Tsunami floods
1d4 land tiles adjacent to oceans will become "Shallows", all species on adjacent ocean tiles will automatically migrate into the shallow tile.

>3: Meteor strike
1d10 random tiles will be hit by meteors, killing anything on those tiles. New "Crater" tile will be created as a new subtype biome of the tile it is on, craters can sustain life up to +1 size and allow 2 different species to thrive within. If meteor hits ocean nothing happens, if it hits shallows the species get eradicated but a "crater" wont be created.

>4: Rise of the Kraken
A "Kraken" species spawn in a random ocean tile. They have the size of 4, and 1d4+1 point in each attribute (rolling 5d4 to check)
They have a trait which allows them to exist self sufficiently in size 4 on water. They eradicate everything they eat, and are eradicated if eaten.
They expand 1 tile in a random direction that has a species on it each turn. They stop expanding when there are 4 Krakens on the map.

> 5: Alien probe
An alien ship probes the planet, and abducts 1 tile with a thriving species from each player. Players get to choose which thriving species they give away.

> 6: Drought
1d3 shallows tiles will become land tiles. Land tiles directly adjacent to it will receive a new 'DROUGHT' subtype. Droughted Land tiles give -1 camouflage to species on it, and species can only thrive at -1 size less.

>>5075503
Sensing upheaval in their region, the Dragonewts dive into the ocean, desperate to survive the increasing amount of seismic activity. Disaster is sure to strike soon. And meanwhile, the serpents move south and feast on their younger cousins to become the dominant species in the plains.

>>5073353
The constant drilling of the Tatakas into the earth's core has allowed magma to spew to the surface, disrupting the faultline that the archipelago sits on. After generations of this, the volcanoes finally roar in protest, bursting into devastating explosions of fire, brimstone, lightning and death. The dragonewts are wiped from their homes, and in the ensuing chaos, the Delgi are wiped out by the ash raining from the sky. Three whole populations are removed from the face of the earth, leaving the land filled with surviving newts.

The Guts move north, cutting through the double-flagged shallows and then trekking through the volcanic plains, before finally reaching dry land. They attempt to eradicate the newts! And indeed, some are killed upon arrival. However, the newts camouflage too well, and soon enough, the Guts fail in their attempt to eradicate them. They feed off the mushrooms while working out how to do so.

But as luck would have it, an army of Spineworms move into the plains as well, feeding off their younger brethren, and being eaten by the Guts in kind. With four species vying for dominance on the tile, the Wurmanders end up going extinct by the hand of their descendants, exactly as the Guts desired.

>I need to expand the messiah to two hexes that contain other delgi, preferably one to the north and one to the south-east

Delgi is unable to post, and had to make his move over discord.

The Comelgi spread up and down, onto regions where their younger brethren have saturated. They make peace with the swarms of bugs, and use their soothing pheromones to prevent conflict between the species.

>>5075638
And finally, the solar storms strike! Up North, they wipe out a population of the original Mush, rendering the inhabitants of that region without a food source. That settlement soon falls into anarchy.

The Delgi expand upwards with their new Messiahs, retaking the continent! The entire thing is theirs once again, with no competition.

>1: Tsunami floods
1d4 land tiles adjacent to oceans will become "Shallows", all species on adjacent ocean tiles will automatically migrate into the shallow tile.

>2: Meteor strike
1d10 random tiles will be hit by meteors, killing anything on those tiles. New "Crater" tile will be created as a new subtype biome of the tile it is on, craters can sustain life up to +1 size and allow 2 different species to thrive within. If meteor hits ocean nothing happens, if it hits shallows the species get eradicated but a "crater" wont be created.

>3: Rise of the Kraken
A "Kraken" species spawn in a random ocean tile. They have the size of 4, and 1d4+1 point in each attribute (rolling 5d4 to check)
They have a trait which allows them to exist self sufficiently in size 4 on water. They eradicate everything they eat, and are eradicated if eaten.
They expand 1 tile in a random direction that has a species on it each turn. They stop expanding when there are 4 Krakens on the map.

>4: Alien probe
An alien ship probes the planet, and abducts 1 tile with a thriving species from each player. Players get to choose which thriving species they give away.

>5: Drought
1d3 shallows tiles will become land tiles. Land tiles directly adjacent to it will receive a new 'DROUGHT' subtype. Droughted Land tiles give -1 camouflage to species on it, and species can only thrive at -1 size less.

As the plates beneath the seas shift, something begins pushing its way free from between them- An ancient creature, its body composed of coral, that ruled the Archipelago long before its current host of creatures. The Southern ocean witnesses the Limuterra for the first time. The species has managed to span coast-to-coast, turning the shallows into one superorganism comprised of themselves. The fruits lure the giants into eating them, and the resulting toxicity causes the species to suffer.

>>5080455
Due to the combined hunting of both the newly-built warships, and the kaiju that have flowed into the same tile, the sea is devoid of species. Neither are able to destroy each other, but their struggle for food has killed everything else in that region.

The spores latch on to the backs of the slow-moving Tentor, and soon, the majority of their population is overtaken by these symbiotic organisms. To the West, the Curral continues drifting along with the currents, seeding the edges of the ocean and blooming beneath their new neighbours.

>>5080623
>>5080626
By spreading their fruits, the population of Giants are severely damaged. They're no longer able to absorb the energies of the world and sustain themselves. Algal matter washes onto the arctic plains, clinging to the edges of the iceberg and surviving like lichen. Down south, the seas are claimed by the last of the floating islands.

>>5081148
>>5081536
The Ragnaroka swim across the stretch of ocean, past the new metal ships of the Buns, in order to feast on the Dormin. Hard-fought battles take place, but they manage to defeat them and gain a bounty of food. A final contingent swoops into the shallows, where they eke out a niche and thrive above the Limu.

>>5081564
The Buns send out more of their population into the sea, on less specialised boats. These ones fare badly, however... They're soon outcompeted by the other inhabitants of the ocean, and only those who can find room aboard the Orb ships survive.

>>5081733
>>5081740
The Crystal-Backed Giants expand outwards, snatching vast tracts of territory from the Ragnaroka. Though the larger predators are able to eat, they can't put a stop to the growth of the latest generation, as they can't prey on them in the depths. Though their lesser cousins suffer, the Chakalaka prosper in the end.

>>5080571
Now able to eat any land-creatures in the region, the Guts expand outwards and claim one final bit of land, before settling down at the edge of the volcanoes to await the end of days.

The Delgi and Newts make no change this era.

And finally, the plates split open and a massive beast breaches the surface. Its roar echoes across the land, as it instantly starts decimating the inhabitants of the land. The Archipelago is left in chaos as-

>ERROR!

>SURFACE SCAN INTERRUPTED

>RESTORING DATA...

>ERROR! INSUFFICIENT POWER

>REALLOCATE? Y/N

>N

>TERMINATING SCAN
>>
"So, that's it, huh?"

>"Looks like it. Damn shame. Which ones were you rooting for?"

"All of them turned out pretty damn dangerous in the end. But I'd have to say, the Tentor would have been the easiest to live with."

>"Mhm. I was partial to the Newts myself."

"What do you think we'll find, once we touch down?"

The Navigator adjusted his glasses, looking over the display. Brilliant points of light danced about on the screen, displaying facts and figures. Highlighted on the map were several glowing chunks, obscured by intermittent error windows. He turned towards his younger companion, an unreadable expression plastered across his wrinkled face.

>"Hard to say. Only Gaia world in this sector, and this just has to happen to it..."

"We could still turn around. There's no telling what we'll find once we touch down. You sure we can't get anything more from the scan?"

>"We can't turn around, and we can't figure things out till we enter the system. We set out for this place too long ago. There's no going back now. At least it doesn't look like we have to content with advanced civilisations."

The Assistant settled into a chair. With a flick of his wrist, he pulled up several sets of archives, from the last few times that the duo had awoken from cryosleep. This one, the thirteenth and final time, was the critical point. He looked through the old notes. For them, it felt like days ago- not counting the bleary memories that passed for dreams while slumbering in a frozen pod. But for the inhabitants of the planet, it had been countless generations. Even longer, considering both the length of their travel, and the time it would take light to reach their scanners.

"Advanced civilisations... Right. So by the time we get there, we should expect to see the Buns and their city. No way to tell what happened to them after the scan cut out. Damn, I wish we could get one last look..."

>"I know, kiddo. But we can't use any more juice. Last bit is to get the ship up and running, and wake the rest from cryo. Whatever is down there, we deal with it. Personally, I'm hoping the Guts have had good luck."

Fluorescent light shone from above, illuminating the cockpit as the duo silently watched the void of space. A tiny point of light sat in front of them, marked out by the screen. There it was. Their destination. The place that the generation ship would settle on. The Navigator continued tapping on buttons and swiping his fingers against various panels, choosing their location carefully.

"Delgium? Good choice. Which part of it are you thinking? Anywhere should be safe, since the Delgi aren't exactly violent, but I'm more worried about the neighbors."

>"Correct. I'd say... The South-West. That spot where the Guts settled in long ago. It's close enough to the ocean, far from the giants, and the forests are nearby. That's the best spot for the colony."

"I gotta say, I'm kinda excited to try Tentor meat. That spot looks like good fishing."

>"Just don't get a lungful of spores. I don't want to see what the Shrum will do to a human."

"Yeah... Those guys are hazardous. You didn't follow them as closely as I did, did you?"

>"I did not. Pray tell?"

"They're hyperspecialized. There's a whole bunch of different wings of the species, all meant to adapt to different parts of the volcanic regions. Who knows how many other subspecies are out there in the world, waiting to be discovered?"

"You sound passionate about them."

"I was a botanist back home. I know they're Fungi- Or, well, fungiforms. Not like earth classifications apply to aliens. But still, that's close enough to my field of expertise."

>"Just don't wander off in search of them. You know that the jungles are Firenewt territory. Those worms can swallow a man whole. Now those, I can appreciate. Beautiful creatures, though dangerous as hell. I did enjoy seeing them flourish, they had a good run."

"Yeah. Though... We'll have to go there eventually. That's where the Guts vanished. Who knows what their civilisation is doing now?"

>"Who knows? Either way, it's definitely the centre of the Archipelago. The East is absolutely unspeakable."

The Assistant's face paled. He zoomed in to the satellite imagery, looking at the orange scars that ripped across the land.

"The World Scar... Yeah. The Tatakas just kept drilling and drilling. Like damn termites. Their nests go coast to coast. I wish we could have done a deep scan, seen what was way beneath the surface. The world is theirs, by now."

>"Not just them. The land itself is inhospitable. Though, I shouldn't need to tell you. You're the botanist."

"It was fascinating to watch. They've assimilated everything in the environment and taken on its shape, its form, and there's even whole islands. I'd love to touch down, but we don't have enough EVA suits to go traipsing halfway across the world. Shame that I can't get a Limubud sample."

>"I reckon we'll be safe from them... Unless they've spread out in the time since the last scan. The Chakalaka, at least, won't be coming around to our colony within our lifetime. They're busy up North, with the Kraken, with the Ragnaroka, and with the buns."

"That was terrifying to see. I thought they were peaceful. But seeing them suddenly attack the city... Didn't expect that in the slightest. Buns almost got wiped out just from that one population and their eye beams."

>"Good thing they hung in there. And at the very least, they're contained up North. Maybe we can make contact in our own time, but for now, we haven't been eclipsed by their society. The Giants have wrapped halfway across the Archipelago, but as long as we don't crowd them out, they shouldn't attack us."
A loud beep caught the attention of the two. It was time. Soon, the cryopods would start opening, and the ship would have to be in running condition again, with a whole crew, before it could start seeding the planet with life. The Navigator and Assistant looked at each other. The old man spoke first, his wrinkled skin creasing in a frown.

>"I suppose this is it. We won't be seeing as much of each other anymore. Go on, kid. Back to your family."

He nodded in response, extending a hand to shake. The light shone against his olive skin, the Spacer's tan evident after their constant exposure to the lights.

"Me too. I've enjoyed our time together, old-timer. It was... Quite the journey. Watching these species grow up, getting to know you... I guess it's the end of an adventure."

>"And the start of a new one. We're all going to live on, down there. It's a new life. Nothing to be sad about."

Despite himself, he felt a spot of moisture beading up in his one good eye. The Navigator turned away, setting his other hand on the console to finish up the final checks.

>"Stay safe out there."

"You too."

They shook hands, and the Assistant span on his heel to exit the cockpit. Without another word, he left for the Cryo chambers, to see the first few crewmates out of their pods. The Old Navigator tapped on one more button, filling the room with soft notes- Notes that spelt the ending of one journey, and the beginning of another.

Guts: 15
Limubud: 9
Delgi: 8
Firenewt: 7
Shrum: 5

Leaving the Tatakas as the winner, and the rulers of the world! And now, before the thread ends, the Tatakas get the right to continue their story. They get to decide the fate of the world, what happens to their species, as well as the others, and what awaits the colonists when they finally touch down in the Archipelago.

A log recovered from the blackbox of the Canterbury.

"Captain's Log. Day 1. We're attempting our excursion into the east side of the planet. The Ensign said he saw a small house as we began traveling towards the World Scar, hidden among the trees and grass of the Sporophyll Forest. Newt and Shrum populations seem relatively stable, above average for this time of year. Despite our theories on the Tatako during our journey, we've seen none since we arrived. Hell, the Buns and Delgi seem remarkably untouched for how close they were to them."

>"Boatswain's Log, Day 3. We've been over the World Scar for days now. Cap'n's been telling us there's nothing out there but I swear I've... seen something down there, in the cracks of the earth."

An attached video zooms in on the sweltering crags and molten floes beneath, and the slightest of moving forms, no larger than a wolf.

"Captain's Log, Day 5. Due to unforeseen ash storms messing with our flight systems, we needed to travel into the region known as Behemoth's Vestibule. Undersea probes shows us that there's no sign of any life, Ragnaroka or Giants. Where'd they go? A few Bun fishing vessels waved at our vessel, but never interacted.

>"Boatswain's Log, Day 5. We've all heard the stories of what happens to folks who try to make it to the other side. They never make it, and if they do ramble on about... Seas of Purple and Pink muck stretched as far as the eye could see. Madmen."

"Captain's Log, Day 11. After a refueling attempt on the east coast] of Delgium, we're ready to make another incursion across the World Scar. Wish us luck."

>"Boatswain's Log, Day 12. It's real. It's all real. Never-ending shades of violet and purple, coating the Ocean like thick mud. Captain's ready to set us down."

"Captain's Log, Day 12. We've entered a series of tunnels bored into the earth beneath our ship. Preliminary signs show no life signs, but I swear I hear... breathing. As loud as a tidal wave."

>"Boatswain's Log, Day 12. We couldn't get everyone back. Whatever was down there, we woke up. It.. looked like a demon made of lava and bone. Once it started moving, everything else did. They're everywhere, I can see them below us. So many. So many."

"Captain's Final Log, Day 13. This is the crew of the Canterbury. Dont come for us, please, whatever you pray to dont come. They arent gone, they were waiting. Sleeping. We're sorry, we.. didn't know what we were doing. We've decided we're going to set her down one last time, stop them from getting to the rest of the colony."

The Alien Vessel that recovered and translated this blackbox noted that despite the actions of the Canterbury, large parts of the planet including the East Cost of "Delgium" and a region once identified as the site of a colony have become blackened with fire and magma. No signs of any of the beasts described in the log have been found, but the team prepares to land on the surface.
