It has been nine years since the fall of Alterac, after the king Aiden Perenolde betrayed the Alliance and sided with the Horde of Orgrim Doomhammer. For this betrayal, king Aiden Perenolde was dethroned and Alterac City was sacked. The nobles and population fled the land and the Kingdom of Alterac was no more.

You are Alric Perenolde, the prince and second heir of Alterac. By the order of king Aiden, you were sent into temporary exile to be safe from the Second War. This exile turned permanent and Captain Normand Garside, your guardian for the past nine years, made sure that you were safe and learned the useful skills that would help you in the future.

Now nine years later in the year 15 after the opening of the Dark Portal, you are ready to take the responsibility and try to unite the scattered Alteraci people and reclaim the lands that were once the Kingdom of Alterac.

Having come home from the diplomatic tour and with the summer arriving, your actions were still constrained by the edict of King Terenas. With your hands proverbially tied, you decided to scout Strahnbrad Hills after a clash happened with bandits. This mission to scout the hills felt like a success with now the terrain being familiar and learning that there were bandits in the hills and the approach to Strahnbrad through the mountains was blocked by trolls.

In addition you managed to save an unknown man from the bandits, who revealed himself to be a warlock named Eligius. Having brought him back to Dawnholme, you allowed the man to stay in the town as long as he kept his magic hidden.

In the early weeks of the summer a raiding party of Blackrock Orcs descended from the mountains and kidnapped several of your people. You chased them and freed your people, before Captain Garside led your men and managed to defeat a larger orc warband. These events worry you a lot. Orcs coming down from the mountains to kidnap people to sacrifice them wasn’t a thing you wanted to be a regular event.

But in the end there was some good news, Jaina had sent you a letter informing you that she would be traveling to Stormwind to see Arthas to be made into a full paladin and a Knight of the Silver Hand. She was also willing to invite you to accompany her, giving you a chance to talk with different important people. This was quite big and a chance to talk with the kings and lords of the Alliance shouldn’t be missed.

Welcome to Alterac Resurgent Quest!

The weather had been good in the past few days and you had been giving your left ankle more exercise by walking outside without the use of crutches. It still started to hurt after you had walked a bit too much and it couldn’t really handle jogging around without the throbbing pain hitting your ankle. It would take a bit more time for it to completely heal even with the help of Raleigh the True using his paladin skills to help the healing progress.

With the weather having been good, you wished that it would continue to be good in the coming days. Jaina would be riding through your land as she travelled from Dalaran to Southshore in two days and if it was raining sideways, her first impression of Alterac and Dawnholme wouldn’t be that good. Technically she would be the first member of foreign nobility to visit Alterac since the Second War and easily the most important visitor in a long time.

In that light you had thought about how to receive her. Maybe she should be received like an important foreign diplomat and have a proper receiving ceremony, a bit like the ones done back in Alterac City by your father. Or she is just visiting quickly and giving too much attention to this could cause trouble to both of you. There are after all people who wouldn’t like to see you cooperating with her or with others and rumours or news of her visiting you would spread fast and they could cause headaches for you and for Jaina in the future.

>Let her ride to Dawnholme without escorts.
>Send Sir Gravis and the knights to escort her to Dawnholme.
>Your ankle doesn’t hurt when riding a horse, go to Gavin’s Naze by yourself and escort her to Dawnholme.
>Other, write in.

>Have a small welcoming committee ready for her, people can know that someone important is visiting you.
>Pomp and circumstances. Welcome her like a proper foreign diplomat.

QM: Pair of choices so please vote in both. Also I made a new Character List pastebin as the list of important or relevant characters has grown a bit. I kinda don’t want the OP to have a long list of links so I might think about some other solution in the future.

Do we know how she's traveling? If she has an entourage, some sort of stately reception would probably be called for, but if she's traveling by herself it would probably be better to meet her as a friend and don't attract attention to her. Out of consideration for her reputation as well as to not be the tall poppy.
>>
>>5062192

You do not know exactly how she will travel, but if you had to guess it would be on a horseback and with minimal to no escorts. When the expedition against the gnolls happened, she travelled alone on a horse.
>>
>>5062223

Well she knows how to handle herself.

I wonder if she summoned a water elemental yet. Incidentally, elementals were kind of hot in WC1 era. I wonder if it was their choice of form or the summoners'.

Anyways, I'd stick with the personal welcome and being discreet.

Better to not make too much rumors, we will not be well received at the feast by many.
Since we are leaving, i am not sure about taking all our knights. Each of them is a great fighter that would help here at home.
But it might be better to take all of them, there are likely plenty of people that want to see us as dead. Some more than others.
Maybe we could join another lord that is going north like, Blackmoore. Better safety in numbers, and he has no reason to back stab us with our deal.

We need the Alliance nobles to treat us as the legitimate king of Alterac. Therefore, we should take this opportunity to make a good impression.

We're doing it more for the fun and practice than anything else.

You couldn’t make the decision between being fully discrete and having some sort of a small welcoming committee. Both had their benefits and trying to think the best possible choice was quite hard. In the end you thought about what Jaina would like to see or expect and made your decision with that in mind. She didn’t seem like a person to really be interested in pomp and circumstances or grand feasts as she was all fine with mucking around with the soldiers during the expedition against the gnolls. And she chose the life of training in Dalaran instead of staying in Kul Tiras where the life would be easier.

You talked with Maura Garside on how to receive her somewhat discreetly, but same time not completely hiding that she would be here. From Maura’s experience as a servant and working in the palace, she had a relatively good idea of how foreign officials and diplomats would be received and after you had told her things and details about Jaina, she managed to get a good idea of how things would be organized. Hearing that Maura had a plan, it was easy for you to make the decision too.

You would go to Gavin’s Naze and escort Jaina safely back to Dawnholme.

The next day you packed some useful things into your saddle packs and got your horse Epona ready. Sir Gravis and Joe would be accompanying you and providing security if it is needed. You had talked with Captain Garside and both of you agreed that if the orcs had attacked once, they could try it again any time. Due to that pair of knights would be following you all time. If you were to be attacked, they would buy you enough time to flee.

With everything else in Dawnholme being handled and not requiring your close supervision, you mounted your horse and left for Gavin's Naze.

You had arrived at Gavin's Naze in the evening and found a place to sleep in one of the farms. Next morning you met with one of the patrols there and gave them the order to watch the approaches from Dalaran and to inform you when Jaina is spotted. After sending the patrol away, you could only do but wait.

A bit before midday the patrol returned and with them was Jaina on a horse. She was chatting with one of the soldiers of the patrol as they approached you. And when they were close enough, she turned her head towards you and you could see her smiling. Jaina was wearing her large purple travelling cloak which covered her and made her look more like just a traveler and her horse carried several large packs.

“Lady Proudmoore, welcome to Alterac.” You said to her and bowed before going to offer help for her to get off her horse.

“Hello Alric!” She said happily as she took your hand and jumped off the horse. “No need to be so formal.”

“Just trying to be polite” You said back to her and continued. “It is nice to see you Jaina.”

“You too Alric.” Jaina said back with a smile.

You let the soldiers continue their scheduled patrol and stopped bothering them.

“How much time do you have? When do you have to be in Southshore?” You asked her.

“Three to five days? The ships can wait a day or two, they know that travelling there will take some time. How long does it take to reach your home and then travel to Southshore?” Jaina told you and asked back.

“If we leave now we will reach Dawnholme easily before the evening and it will take a day to travel to Southshore.” You said to Jaina and scratched your chin. “So about two days in total.”

“Then we aren’t in a hurry.” Jaina said with a smile. “I would like to see Dawnholme and what you have accomplished before leaving.”

“Well better for us to leave then. Please follow me Jaina.”

Two of you walked to the farm where Sir Gravis and Joe were waiting for you. The two knights had prepared Epona and greeted Jaina. With your horse ready, it was time to ride back home. But the ride would be long, meaning you have a plenty of time to talk with Jaina about something.

All four of you had been riding for a moment past the farms and cottages. The people toiled in the fields and they greeted you as you passed them. A small road or more of a cart path had formed from the farms back to Dawnholme making the travel a bit easier. When you claimed these lands last year this all was just wilderness with minimal signs of human work, but now this place has started to prosper.

“Hey Jaina, what do you expect of Stormwind?” You asked Jaina.

“What do you mean?” She asked you.

“I mean how do you think the things go there or happen?” You asked her and continued. “I don’t really have an idea how events like this work. What will you do in Stormwind?”

“Oh right, well it has been some time since I have been in one of these big events, but most of the time they can be dreadfully boring.” Jaina said to you with a bit of disdain in her voice.

“Boring? Really?”

“Yeah, old men talking about important things and trying to be as prestigious as possible. Ceremonies, big feasts and so forth.” Jaina told you. “They can really drag on.”

“I don’t really remember that much about the ceremonies back home in Alterac City so I can’t really say that it was boring. I did find all the knights in their shiny armours really fascinating so that might have helped.” You mused aloud.

“Haha, I had to find a way to escape the ceremonies. Staying there and looking important are not for me.” Jaina said to you with a laugh. “But in Stormwind I do think it won’t be boring, King Varian Wrynn is a martial king so they might have a tourney, the feasts and ceremonies are less stuck up. And of course I get to see my family and friends that are there.”

“That does sound pleasant.” You said back to her.

“Yeah it is, it has been a while since I have seen them or had a chance to spend time with them.” She said to you. “But what about you, what are you waiting for from Stormwind?”

“Truth to be told, I haven't made the decision yet.” You said to Jaina.

“You haven’t?!” Jaina said and was surprised.

“Yeah it has been a wild few weeks since the letter you sent and I don’t know, what if something happens while I am gone?” You said.

“You really should come, I have enough pull to make sure that everything is fine.” She said back with a more serious tone in her voice. “What has happened that is so important?”

You told her the news of Strahnbrad Hills, the orcs attacking from the mountains and the fighting against them. You described the events and how all this had impacted you and your people. Of course you let some details out like Eligius, but you did tell her nearly everything including the rather embarrassing fact of twisting your ankle.

You and Jaina talked about mundane things as you rode through the fingers of Hillsbrad. She told about her studies and the basic daily stuff she did in Dalaran and you meanwhile told her more about the events that happened in Hillsbrad.

Talking about these things made the time fly fast and as the day started to turn towards late afternoon and evening, you saw Dawnholme in the distance. The long ride home was over.

Reaching the town you waved Sir Gravis and Joe off as you didn’t need the extra security anymore. You rode past the outskirts and greeted the few peasants who were still doing their jobs and carrying on their business before guiding Jaina to the stables. There a few stablehands took care of the horses allowing you to leave for your home.

Pair of City Guards had been sent to help you to carry the saddle packs and you made your way to the farmstead where few more guards had been stationed to receive you. Opening the door to the farmstead and letting Jaina in, you saw the effort Maura Garside had done to receive Jaina there. The farmstead had been cleaned, the large table that you used during your meetings had been covered with the best tablecloth in the house and the expensive silverware that generally was locked away in a safe spot had been taken out.

Both Normand and Maura Garside had their best clothes on as they greeted Jaina and welcomed her to Dawnholme and Alterac.

Jaina frankly was surprised how much work Maura had done to make everything look nice and to be honest even you were surprised by the amount of work done.

...

Maura had prepared with the help of a few others a full course dinner for Jaina and you. As she worked in the kitchen, Jaina talked with both you and Normand about all the things. Several times you had to bail Normand out and answer Jainas questions to allow him a moment to actually eat.

During the dinner Jaina then asked the important question.

“Alric, are you coming to Stormwind with me?”

As Jaina and others had said, this was a chance to possibly meet with the lords and kings of the Alliance and you didn’t know when and if you would have a similar chance in the future. Possibility to seeing them and talking with them about the edict of King Terenas and the overall situation shouldn’t be missed. But at the same time leaving Alterac alone for several weeks without a chance to quickly return worried you a lot. What if the Syndicate or the orcs decide to attack? What if the ogres decide that now is the time to go and destroy those pesky humans?

Our officers and friends gave us no reason to doubt them. And we could really use this opportunity to approach Alliance's elite. Maybe even improve our relationship with Arthas, although he's probably only going to hate our guts for coming as Jaina's plus one.

You had been thinking about this before and you had to think a bit more. You weren’t that sure of your decision, but when you said it, you said it with confidence in your voice.

“Yes, I will come.” You said to Jaina and continued. “What you have said about having a chance to meet with the important people shouldn’t be missed.”

“I knew you would come.” Jaina said back to you and smiled.

“I don’t like leaving Alterac alone, but I know to trust Captain Garside and my officers to keep everything up and running while I am gone.”

“Very true, we will keep Alterac and its people safe.” Garside said.

“Then it is settled. I mentioned in my letter that I might have someone with me so when you appear with me, they have a room prepared for you aboard the ship.” Jaina said. “We don’t have to worry about it or them denying it.”

“Well it seems I get to see the world outside of Alterac and Hillsbrad.” You said and chuckled.

You finished the dinner with Jaina and Normand before showing the farmstead to her. You told how Normand had purchased this dilapidated farm and had repaired it with some help several years after the start of your temporary exile. You told her all kinds of stories of how grown in the farmstead and how the daily life really was here.

The evening ended with Normand sharing some of his priced Alterac Brandy with you as he told stories from the time when he was young and fought with the rest of the knights against Stromgarde or against trolls. He also told the story of how you were spirited away from Alterac City after Jaina asked to hear that story.

Maura had prepared your room for Jaina as the small guest room upstairs felt too small for her. You were completely fine with this arrangement as you could easily sleep anywhere and truth to be told you agreed with Maura. The guest room was the size of a small closet and definitely not suitable for Jaina.

You did wonder if Jaina would look at your belongings and books in your small room. Would she find the rustic way of living you had gotten used to unfamiliar or what would she really think about all this. Either way, it was really nice to see Jaina again and for her to visit Dawnholme and you.

Normally you wake up easily without anyone having to wake you up and you wake up quite early. Having learned to not waste daylight, your inner clock is extremely fine tuned. Today you woke up earlier than that.

There was a sound downstairs that you heard through your sleep. A second sound woke you up and you quickly opened your eyes. Third sound you recognized was a scream from Jaina.

More sounds of crashes and screaming could be heard downstairs as you jumped off the bed and dashed to the door of the quest room and threw it open. You ran downstairs as fast as you could, jumping the last few steps and landing with a thud on the floor. Then you saw a man wearing dark clothing staggering out of your room holding his head. Your eyes noticed the orange bandana and then his clothing that clearly was bloody.

Your mind immediately made the conclusion. Jaina must be hurt.

You wished that you had your sword or dagger with you, but when you had removed your sword belt when you came home, you didn’t even have the rondel dagger with you. You had thrown the belt into your room and no way you could reach it now. Wearing only your braies and shirt, the only real option you had was either to run to the opposite side of the room and draw a weapon from the weapon rack there, or try to deal with the man right now. You had to decide what you did next and fast.

You reached to your left and grabbed a candelabra that was over a shelf and threw it at the man. The candelabra flew across the room and smacked the man on his arm that startled him and definitely got his attention. You grabbed a chair from the table and threw it too at the man with the chair brushing him and getting him off foot.

Next you grabbed a second chair and closed the distance. With a heave and shout you swung the chair at the man connecting with his body.

The chair broke apart into pieces when it hit the man leaving you with a piece of wood in your hand. The man stumbled hard from the strike and lost control of the dagger in his hand dropping it on the floor. You attempted to swing the broken piece of the chair at him, but the man managed to catch your hand and punch you right in the face, making you stumble a few feet.

You dropped the broken piece of the chair and punched the man back before transitioning into grappling with him. Lacking a proper weapon to swing at him, you knew that you either had to grapple him down and choke the man out or beat the daylight out of him.

You went for the man's throat, but he swepth your hands off before giving you a slight push and sweeping your legs away with his own leg. With a thud you hit the floor and in an instant the man was over you with his hands trying to reach your throat.

You punched the man and pushed away his left arm as his right hand attempted to grasp your throat. You pushed his right hand away and tried to kick the man in his nuts, but he blocked your attempt and punched your right cheek. Grasping both of his arms with your hands you kept his hands away from you, but then his knee hit your stomach pushing the air out of your lungs. The lack of air made your hand wobbly and you had to really struggle to keep the hands away from you. A second knee pushed whatever air you had in you away and the hands reached your throat trying to squish the air and life out of you. The seconds turned into minutes in your mind as the hands tried to push your throat in and you struggled to push or beat them away. You knew that you wouldn’t last long.

Then with a klank something hit the man in the head that eased the pressure on you. A second klank threw him from you and you gasped for air. A third klank hit the man again and made him senseless.

You had to take a few deep breaths to gain back some idea of what was going on and push yourself up into a sitting position. Then you saw who had helped you.

Jaina stood next to you wearing only her nightgown and carrying her staff. She looked really pissed and when the man next to you moved a bit, she whacked him again with her staff. Then she turned towards you and smiled.

“Alric, are you okay?” She asked you.

“I think I am.” You said to her and coughed a few times hard. “Are you okay?”

“I am I am.” Jaina said back and whacked the man again.

“Then where did the blood come from? It isn’t yours?” You asked as you pushed yourself to your feet.

“No no I am fine.” Jaina said and continued. “I woke up when the man crashed on the window and in moments he was stumbling out of the room.”

“Then who was it?” You asked.

“Someone from outside?” Jaina said and whacked the assailant again straight into his head knocking him out.

“What is going on?” Normand Garside asked, carrying his warhammer as he made his way down the stairs.

“Take care of this man.” You said to him and went to take a sword from the weapon rack. “I will go outside and see what is going out there.”

Walking to the weapon rack and drawing a sword, you step outside the farmstead. The very early morning of Alterac greeted you with the sun still staying behind the hills, but the rays had already made the sky a bit bright.

Walking around the farmstead with the sword in your hand, you took careful steps and reached the side of the house with the window to your room. There was a man on his back holding his stomach. Quickly you recognized the man, it was Sir Radan the bandit serving his crimes away in hard labour. Radan noticed you when you approached him.

“Prince Alric, are you alright?” He asked you with a grimace.

“I am and so is everyone inside the house.” You said back and dropped the sword. “Sir Radan, how are you feeling?”

“The man stabbed me as I tried to stop him.” He said.

“What happened?” You asked and went down on your knee and put your hands on his wound.

“I woke up early and...I went to take a piss.” Sir Radan said between taking a breath. “And I saw the man and...I thought I recognized him…from the time in Syndicate...So I followed him.”

“And then?” You asked him.

“I went after him...I thought I had seen him when I worked for Syndicate… so I stopped him… and he stabbed me, but I pushed him and slowed him down and made the window crash open.” Sir Radan said to you. “Then…he stabbed me...and I tried to grab him before he stepped through the window.”

“Alright alright Radan, you have to stay still. Help is coming.” You said to him pressed his wound.

You shouted for the guards as loud as you could and in a moment one of them did appear. You immediately send him to call the alarm and get Raleight the True and someone with skills in medicine here. A few moments later a few more guards appeared and with them came Raleigh. Only then you could stop pressing at the wound Radan had suffered.

You sat on a chair inside the farmstead with the sword you had picked up leaning on the table.. The man who had attacked you had been wrapped tightly with a rope and dragged away by the guards into the jail and chained tightly into one of the pillars there by your orders. You were frustrated, frankly you were angry that someone had the audacity to attack your home, frankly you were furious that Jaina had to be part of the attack.

Thankfully Jaina was alright, she hadn’t been hurt in the attack at all, but it was clear that the attack had shocked her. As you were outside, she had changed into her more casual clothing, but she still held her staff close to her.

“What the hell was that Alric? Who was the man? Why did he attack us?” Jaina asked you.

The orange bandana was a giveaway. With what Sir Radan had said, it was so clear that the man was a member of the Syndicate. You didn’t know how much to tell to Jaina, but you felt that you could trust her. You felt that Jaina should know what had happened.

>Tell her about the Syndicate, about your big brother. Tell her about the activities you know are behind off.
>Tell her about the Syndicate, but don’t tell all the details or about your brother.
>Avoid the truth, but spin a story of people not wanting you to succeed. Jaina being here was just a coincidence.
>Other, write in.

QM: The first roll of 11 was for Sir Radan. He succeeded in slowing the man down.

Good man Radan. We should see about appropriate reward, seeing as he's doing his best as upright citizen.

>Tell her about the Syndicate.

I've a bit of mixed feelings about telling her every detail, because whatever we share with her will burden her, possibly putting her into position where she had to lie for our benefit.
On the other hand, there's scarcely a more trustworthy person around that's not already in our court.

>Tell Jaina that Syndicate is criminal organisation tied with Alterac and we're conteding with it. We trust her to tell her more, but doing so might put her in danger.

If she does want to hear more though, tell her.

Oh some security considerations will have to be made. Some guards and hounds for starters. I wonder what the intruder was after, though. Assassination? Kidnapping? Or just intel gathering?

And I guess we also owe Jaina our life. We’re gonna need to get swoler so we’re not at such risk of getting overpowered by a mook.
>>
“There is an organization called Syndicate that attempts to gain control of Alterac.” You said to Jaina. “We have already clashed a few times with people associated with them, but this is the first time they have openly raised a weapon against me.”

“So Alric, you were the target?”

“Yes, I did not think that they would attempt to take my life though.”

“Then who are these people then? This Syndicate, I haven’t heard of them before?”

“I haven’t really spread the word about them or talked about them outside of my closest circle. Both them and I benefit from the word not spreading.”

“Alric, I can see that you aren’t telling me everything.”

“For a reason. I do not want you to share the burden of knowing it all.”

“Tell me what you know of this Syndicate. The man threatened me as well as you.” Jaina demanded.

You really didn’t want her to know about the details, but she demanded to know the details.

“Syndicate is controlled by my big brother Aliden Perenolde. I do not know much, but what I do know is that he and a group of Alteraci nobles control a sizable force inside and outside of Alterac.” You said to her.

“By the Light. Your own brother tried to kill you.” Jaina said and gasped.

“Now we do not know if my brother ordered this and I don’t want you to spread anything you hear now further. Not to people you trust, not to your family or even Lord Antonidas. Do you understand that?” You said back to her. “If others learn this, they might act in a way that will put me and my people into jeopardy.”

“You can trust me Alric, I won’t tell anything about this to anyone.” Jaina said to you and smiled. “But I don’t know what to say, your own brother leads such an organization and acts against you. It is so hard to believe it.”

“Thank you Jaina. And yes, it is quite hard to believe. Hearing news that your brother was still alive, but that he was leading an organization like this wasn’t really fun to hear.”

“I am sorry to hear that Alric.”

“Thank you again, I wouldn’t have wanted this to be the way for you to learn about the existence of the Syndicate.” You said to her. “And thank you for saving me. I do not know if I could have pushed the man off without your help.”

“Alric, no need to thank me. Hitting the man was the simplest thing to do.” Jaina said and smiled.

You had ordered increased guards to the jail and to the farmstead. Maura had made a quick breakfast for you and Jaina and you had changed into your normal clothing. The attack earlier was still really vivid in your mind and you couldn’t concentrate on the things at hand.

Hearing that the man who had attacked you had woken up, you had a chance to go and interrogate the man either personally or allowing someone else to do it. But at the same time you felt that you didn’t want to deal with the man at all and you required something else to occupy your mind. Jaina had asked to see Dawnholme so maybe you could offer a tour for her.

>Interrogate the Syndicate agent yourself, you want to know everything.
>The Syndicate agent can stay in the jail to soften him up. Let your men handle him and watch how they do it.

The royal line of alterac is kind of small in this moment, so I am not sure if outright killing is what they would do. Intel gathering does seem like a good idea, kidnapping a bit more difficult even if not impossible. Since, well we don t have time to spend money for more refine noble things (like something bigger than a farmstead). We didn't spend much even for our equipment, Alterac and the army always come first in our mind and for good reason. Some more guards and even dogs are definetly a good start, for security. Ws should expand the building when we can, or build something new for our center of government.

You wanted to learn as much as possible from the captured man from Syndicate. Whose orders it was that he acted, what was he attempting to accomplish, who exactly does he work for, how many of them are there and so on. Having captured a Syndicate agent was a big boon that you knew would be useful in the long run.

The prisoner had been chained into a wooden pole in one of the few cells of the jail. The guards there had kept their hands off him and he had woken up some time ago. A cloth gag had been put into his mouth to keep him quiet for a moment. When you arrived at the jail with Jaina, you heard from the guards that the prisoner hadn’t been moving or doing anything at all. He was remarkably calm.

You asked the guards to allow you into the cell and after they had opened the door, you stepped in and ordered one of the guards to remove the cloth gag. When the guard removed the gag, you noticed that Jaina had followed you into the cell.

“Can you please leave us?” You asked the guard who nodded and as he was leaving you continued. “What is said in this cell stays in this cell, so please stay away and do not bother us.”

“Understood Prince Alric.” The guard responded and left the cell, closing the door behind him.

You waited for a moment for the guard to have a chance to walk away and when you couldn’t hear his footsteps you turned towards the prisoner.

“Now we can speak without anyone else having to hear what we are saying.” You said to him.

>Attempt to just talk to him, no threatening or trying to force him to speak. Be polite.
>Tell him how the situation is and what awaits him. The way he dies from the death penalty that awaits him depends completely on him.
>You want the information now. Be tough and see if you can get anything out of him.

The prisoner avoided looking at you.

“The thing is that I will want information from you, so I am going to ask you some questions. Let’s start with the simple one. What is your name?” You asked the prisoner with a calm voice.

The prisoner looked up at you before turning his gaze away.

“Alright, under whose orders were you?”

The prisoner continued counting the bricks in the wall.

“Then what about your goal, your plan was to kill me wasn’t it?”

Again the prisoner looked away as you calmly asked the questions.

“You really aren’t planning on talking?” You asked him.

“No.” The prisoner finally spoke.

“Why not?” You asked and pushed your luck. It was a small change that the prisoner would answer.

“Because you already know what you need to know.” He said and looked at you. “What I say won’t change anything so I won’t say anything. Now leave me be and let me wait for my death in peace.”

The prisoner lowered his head back down. It felt and seemed to you that he wouldn’t be saying anything, but only waiting for his fate that was death. Talking to him was a waste of time and what he did say to you was a confirmation of one sort. Even if he had revealed new information, in the end it would be your brother who would be in charge.

You had left the jail and gave the order to double the guards of the jail just in case of anything happening. Having returned back to the farmstead, you had just sat down on one of the benches.

“You are frustrated that you can’t really do anything.” Jaina said to you.

She was correct in that.

“Yeah, the prisoner won’t speak and I don’t have the tools to really react to this.” You said back to her. “I will have my knights guarding me closer and I will order the City Guard to maintain a better watch. Outside of that I lack the skills or people to use.”

“Sorry Alric, I can’t really help you with this.” Jaina said to you.

“No no, it should be me who apologizes. I afterall dragged you into this mess and got an armed man coming through the window.” You said back. “That really frustrates me.”

“Alric, don’t worry about it. We are friends and friends support each other.” Jaina said and smiled.

“Thanks Jaina.”

You spend a good portion of the day giving orders to your men and going through the situation. Sir Radan hadn't suffered too bad of a wound and should recover fully, but it would take a week or two. Basically when you return from Stormwind, he should be healed up. You also told your officers about the decision to go to Stormwind with Jaina. It was a somewhat late announcement to them, but your officers did understand it.

“My Prince, what about your security?” Asked Lieutenant Beckston.

“I will have Sir Gravis and his knights with me. In addition I will be surrounded by the soldiers of Lordaeron so I should be safe.” You said back to him.

“May I suggest that instead of Sir Gravis, me and maybe ten of my men would join you instead?” Beckston said back to you.

“Why should I take you instead of Sir Gravis?” You asked back.

“Well I am Kul Tiran so it could be more acceptable for me and my men to accompany you and Lady Proudmoore.” Beckston argued.

“That isn’t that bad an idea and I would have more of my countrymen with me.” Jaina said to you.

“Then what do we do with the Syndicate prisoner? He is going to get hanged for his attack on you Prince Alric, but when should we do it then?” Asked Lieutenant Cromwell.

“He can be hanged whenever we want it to happen.” Captain Garside answered.

Guards to Stormwind:
>Sir Gravis and his knights
>Lieutenant Beckston and ten of his men

He seems a professional, in comparison
to what we have face so far of the syndicate. For him staying there might not matter much. Hopefully we are able to return in time home. A confrontation could soon arrive be with our brother, the orcs or the ogres. It s strange that the Perenolde are fighting eachother, one would wonder why this is happening to their family now, when unity would ensure a better success in reclaiming their kingdom. Banditry while giving profit, risks to mark them further as black guards much like their father. Maybe our father and Normand didn't want us to be influenced by our siblings, so they decidedto cut us away from them ? Do we even know our brother ?

He gave good reason, and it will be extra good with Jaina as she is the one who is the one who invited us.

This carries some risk but although he is unlikely to start talking on his own, it might be possible Syndicate will send someone to kill him, or break him out.

There is also option of having Kris break him out to help her infiltrate syndicate but honestly I’d rather not risk her that way. She’s more useful as trader and low profile informant and such attempts could easily get her killed. Not to mention we don’t currently have forces to properly respond to any intel we might gain, between absence of heavy weapons, magic or tech gimmicks and with the royal decree up our ass on top of that.

“He can wait. I do worry about his security so keep the jail guarded and the door locked tightly. Also I will take Lieutenant Beckston and a group of his men with me. What he said sounds quite good.” You said to your officers.

“That is then settled. We will keep the prisoner guarded and keep everything up and running while you are away.” Captain Garside said.

“Very good, if you don’t have anything else to say or questions, then this meeting is over.” You said to them.

No one said anything, but Rover looked like he wanted to say something. In the end all of them left the farmstead.

You spend the rest of the day finishing some of the work and signing a few papers for Captain Garside. He would need some documents to prove that he has the legal power over Dawnholme and your holdings while you were away just in case.

Having finished the paperwork you turned towards packing whatever you would need in Stormwind. All the luggage would go into your travel chest and you would have few escorts with you for the travel to Southshore where the ships should be waiting. Everything heavy would be transported on one of the horse carts along with the stuff Lieutenant Beckston might bring with him. You didn’t think that you would need that much stuff with you, but you did pack some extra clothes. If you needed anything, you could probably acquire it in Stormwind.

Late in the evening you and Jaina were sitting around the large table in the farmstead. Maura had baked some pastries that you were now eating. You had been chit chatting with Jaina about Stormwind and what Jaina remembered from the city when she visited it when she was really young.

“Tell me about your family?” Jaina asked you suddenly.

“Why do you want to learn about it? I already dragged you into trouble once so I don’t know if knowing more about my family is beneficial to you?” You said back to her.

“Mostly curious and it would help me to understand all of this better.”

“Alright, I will tell you about them.” You said to her and watched as Jaina shifted on the chair and leaned forward a bit.

“My big brother Aliden was always slightly distant to me. He always followed and helped my father in the duties of running the kingdom so we didn’t really spend time together. And if we did, it was some official duty in which both of us were required to be there. He really took the duty of being the heir to Alterac seriously.” You said to Jaina.

“Such a shame that there wasn’t enough time to be with you, maybe things would be different if he had the time back then.” Jaina said to you.

“Could be, but we aren’t sadly living in that reality. I heard from Garside that after the Second War my father along with the rest of my family and nobles were put into house arrest as executing members of royalty wasn’t exactly the thing King Terenas wanted to do. I heard that after my father had allied himself with the orcs for the second time, my brother was extremely disappointed and fled the capital with nobles following right behind him before the Alliance forces came to subjugate whatever was left of Alterac and arrest my father. By all accounts he saw the alliance with the orcs as a mistake.”

“Have you heard anything recently about him?” Jaina asked.

“Not really no other than he was alive and leading the Syndicate. Sir Radan, the man who attempted to stop the attacker, had seen Aliden when he still worked for Syndicate. And from what I have learned, he avoids being seen or recognized.”

“Sir Radan? You employ a Syndicate member? How can you trust him?” Jaina was astonished.

“He and his men have been working hard labour in an attempt to make goods for the crimes they have done. He hasn’t done anything that would show anything other than asking for a second chance.” You told her.

“And he threw himself at the man without a weapon? If I were you, I would reward the man.” Jaina said and immediately continued. “Sorry if I stepped into your territory.”

“No problem, I have thought a bit about what to do with the man.” You said back and waved Jaina’s concerns away.

“What about the rest of your family?” Jaina asked.

“I do have an older sister. Beve Perenolde. I have good memories of her. She spent time with me whenever she could between her studies. She was a mage.” You said to Jaina and a bunch of good memories came to your mind.

“A mage? I don’t remember hearing or reading about Perenoldes in Dalaran?” Jaina asked confused.

“Because she studied in Capital City with a private tutor. When she visited Alterac City, she would always bring presents to us and spend as much time with me and Aliden as she could. I still remember how she showed me literal magic tricks to amaze me.” You told Jaina.

“She sounds like a lovely person. Maybe I could one day meet her?” Jaina mused.

“Maybe, maybe. We haven’t heard anything about her since the fall of Alterac. Garside had heard that she had returned to Alterac out of loyalty towards my father, but since then nothing.” You said.

“It really is unfortunate that you can’t talk with your siblings and your big brother is against you. I can’t really imagine what it is like.” Jaina said to you.

“Thanks Jaina. But yeah, that is my family. Three siblings of which two have the same goal, but are on opposing sides.”

“I can only wish that you and your siblings can make up and solve the differences between yourselves.” Jaina said to you.

“Yeah...For I predict that one day we are going to spill blood between Alteracis.”

You and Jaina soon after finished talking and went to sleep. Next morning you woke up early and gave the instructions to Lieutenant Beckston and his men. It did not take long for your belongings to be moved to the horse cart and everything to be ready. You just had to wait for Jaina to be ready.

Meanwhile you said goodbye to Garsides and made sure Normand and Lieutenant Cromwell didn’t have any questions regarding what to do when you were gone. Frankly you were nervous about leaving them for a longer period of time, but you had to learn to really delegate and leave things for others.

As you waited for Jaina, you noticed Rover approaching you.

“Good morning Rover.” You said to him.

“My Prince.” He mumbled beneath his beard. “Sire, I ask you a lot, but can you deliver this letter to Stormwind?”

“A letter?” You asked and took the letter he handed to you.

“The address is written on it. Sire, can you deliver it?” Rover asked you.

“I can make sure it gets where it needs to get.” You said to him.

“Thank you my Prince.” Rover said and excused himself.

Only after Rover had left, you read the address written on the letter. It was to be delivered to Rover brothers in Stormwind.

Jaina as customary was a bit late, but you had made sure that everything was ready for you to leave the moment Jaina was ready. When Jaina came out of the farmstead and apologized for being late, you waved her apologies off and in a moment you were riding towards Southshore. Following you and Jaina were Lieutenant Beckston and ten of his Kul Tiran Swashbucklers. A few guards came with you to return your horses and the cart back to Dawnholme after you had left. They would provide security for you for the duration of this trip.

The ride to Southshore went without issues and as you rode south, you told Jaina the stories of what you had been doing nearly a year ago. The fights against the gnolls and the business in Tarren Mill. With Jaina being unfamiliar with Hillsbrad, she listened to you carefully.

Reaching Southshore in late afternoon, the town guards quickly let you through the gate without any extra checks. Riding through Southshore, you and your entourage gained a fair share of curious onlookers, but no one came to stop you or waste your time as you made your way to the docks. It was a bit of a shame to be in Southshore and not having time to visit Beric.

The docks were just as busy as always and you saw why. A number of ships were in progress of being loaded or unloaded of cargo. In the midst of these ships you saw a warship, a battleship of the fleet that protected Lordaeron. It’s mighty brow was armoured with steel and numerous cannons poked out of its sides.

“That is our ship.” Jaina said to you as you rode towards the ship.

There were a number of soldiers outside the battleship giving orders to the longshoremen carrying goods into the ship.

Riding closer to it, you allowed Jaina to take the lead. She rode ahead of you and dismounted next to an important looking footman. You followed close behind her on your horse.

“Lady Proudmoore, it is good to see you.” Said the footman. “I am Lieutenant Falric and I will be escorting and guiding you during this trip.”

“No need for that Lieutenant Falric, I already have someone with me.” Jaina said and pointed to you.

Lieutenant Falric was dumbstruck for a second before he recognized you. At the same moment you recognized him, he was the footman accompanying Prince Arthas when you met him and Lord Uther for the first time. He called you a traitor back then.

“You, what are you doing here?” He asked in an accusatory manner.

You rode closer to him and stayed on horseback.

"I am here to accompany and escort Lady Proudmoore to Stormwind." You said to Falric.

"We weren't told that you would be coming." He said to you and was forced to look up to you. You could see that he was a bit nervous. As much as he seems to dislike you, he understands who you are.

"That is true." You said back to him and continued. "But Lady Jaina did inform you that she might have someone accompany her. Isn't that right Lady Jaina?"

"I did send a letter describing just that." Jaina said back and was holding her smile.

You dismounted your horse next to Lieutenant Falric and handed the reins to one of your men.

"Then we don’t have a problem, do we?"

"No Sire, I will inform the Captain of the ship and tell the crew to prepare your cabin." Falric said and excused himself.

Him having left, Jaina turned towards you and chuckled.

"Did you see how nervous and how red he turned?" She said while trying to stifle her laugh. "I don't know what is between you and him, but I must admit that was fun to see."

"It is just tiresome how people act." You groaned slightly. "Alright Jaina, let's get our stuff aboard.

Having unloaded everything and having said goodbye to your horse Epona, you walked over the gangplank and boarded the ship. Having never been on a ship, this was a new experience for you.

On deck there were several people waiting for you. Prince Arthas stood next to a smaller man that you immediately recognised as the Captain.

"Welcome aboard Lady Proudmoore and Prince Perenolde. I am the Captain of the battleship Iron Duke and I will make sure that the trip to Stormwind will happen without any issues."

"Thank you Captain." Jaina said to him before turning towards Arthas. "It is so good to see you Arthas."

"You too Jaina." Arthas said and smiled before turning towards you. "Prince Alric."

"Prince Arthas." You greeted back.

"Now that greetings have been done, let me guide you to your cabin's." The Captain said and smiled.

The battleship was huge and you got a nicely sizable room with a tiny window to the outside. The ship's crew had carried your armour and travel chest there and you were ready to head back on to the deck.

Leaving the cabin and you found Prince Arthas standing in the hallway. When he noticed you, he turned to face you and took a few steps. There was no one else in the hallway.

"What is your thing with Jaina, why are you here?" He asked you.

He might try and sabotage or plot against us if we tell him we plan to meet nobles. If we happen to meet nobles and chitchat while there, well then that is just us socializing. Totally separate from why we are there.
>>
>>5072880
>Jaina invited us as a friend, and we were glad to accept, both for the company and for the opportunity to meet the notables.
A rare opportunity to compound business with leisure.
Also, is it too early to congratulate him on his imminent induction?

Let’s be earnest, but not obsequious. We can’t make him like us but hopefully if we persevere he will eventually come around.

Although if he’s crushing/hitting on Jaina we’re probably stuck with rivalry.
>>
>>5072901
I don’t think not telling him we’re out to schmooze around means he won’t figure it out on his own. If anything, signaling him that we don’t trust him with our intentions will only motivate him more to sabotage us.
>>
>>5072915
We should try to sound casual then and were just doing whatever that meets our nobility fancy.
>>

>Jaina invited us as a friend, and we were glad to accept, both for the company and for the opportunity to meet the notables.

Key thing here is to make it clear we're not looking to waifu Jaina. We cannot become bros if jealously is the prime emotion he feels when dealing with us.

Best approach is to be straight up that we wanted to spend time with a friend and get some politics done
>>
>>5072880
>Jaina invited us as a friend, and we were glad to accept, both for the company and for the opportunity to meet the notables.

I would suggest not to attempt to become his friend. It s a very bad idea at the moment and likely even in the near future, because he still wants us dead. The last thing we need is a dagger in the dark, or outright a sword.
Instead let our actions/interactions speak on their own about us, right now (even before) he is just looking for an oppurtunity to strike us. And that s beyond adding Jaina to the mix, that s just a plus for him.
Alric unfortunately is going to be likely insulted more than once, and he will need to just get hit. It will be kind of bad for his noble pride, at least when we return home he can get back to killing and commanding. Speaking of we should have a decent increase of wealth and a small of supplies, not great but is better.

You raised your right hand chest high a bit instinctively as a sign of not wanting any trouble. You could easily see that Arthas wanted a confrontation to be used against you from the tone of his voice.

"Jaina invited me as a friend, and I was glad to accept it. Both for the company and for the opportunity to meet other notables." You said to him. "This is a good opportunity to not be missed."

"Is that so...well if you say so, I have nothing to add then." Arthas said and took a step back and started to leave.

"I didn't yet have the chance to congratulate you." You said to him. "Congratulations on your induction to the Silver Hand."

Arthas paused for a second and turned back towards you.

"Thank you." He said with a nod. "And don't try to do anything funny in Stormwind."

Before you could answer him, Arthas had already walked away.

Lieutenant Beckston and his men had found their spot below deck and after having exchanged a few words with him, it was quite clear how happy he and the others were to be on a ship again after a long time. According to the Captain, you would be leaving soon and be joined by a battleship Orion and a pair of frigates that carried King Terenas and his entourage. All in all it would take about a week to arrive into Stormwind if the weather allows it.

When the ship left the harbor of Southshore, you stood on the deck watching as the port city grew smaller. Further you went from the shoreline, the distant objects slowly disappeared into the ocean haze.

It did not take long for Orion and her two escorting frigates to be spotted. Joining gracefully with the other battleship, the fleet turned towards the deeper seas.

You had been warned that people who are first time on a ship might feel a bit nauseous and take time to develop sea legs to get used to the swaying up-down motion the ships do.

You thought that you would endure this and avoid the worst.

You really thought.

The truth was that the moment the wind picked up and the swaying motion started, you immediately started to feel nauseous. The first day at sea was just awful. You felt dizzy, your head hurt like you had a bad hangover and you had no appetite. Being forced to stay in your cabin laying on your back and watching the ceiling with a bucket next to you was the reality you were living.

The second day at sea was a bit better and you even ate a bit without fearing that you would empty your stomach.

During these two days you were visited regularly by the ship doctor and by both Lieutenant Beckston and Jaina. Both of them being Kul Tirans, they had their own advices of how to fight against the seasickness, but really after trying some of them, you still felt the same.

The weather had calmed down on the third day and you found enough strength to walk to the deck. The slight ocean breeze felt refreshing and with the ship not swaying that much, you for the first time felt slightly better.

"Alric! You are up!" Jaina shouted to you eagerly.

"Yeah barely." You said to her. "I haven’t felt sick like this in ages."

"It is good to see that you are feeling better. I started to worry that you would spend the whole trip down in the cabin hugging a bucket." Jaina said with a smile.

"Thankfully I didn't have to befriend the bucket like that." You said and chuckled faintly.

"And Alric." Jaina said.

"Yeah?"

"You look dreadful, come let's go get something to eat."

Two days of seasickness had made you look dreadful and tired so the idea of eating something small and light seemed like a good idea.

The ship's cook quickly got you a small bowl with some bread, crackers, a few apple slices and a cup of water. Jaina then guided you towards the Captain's quarters were dinner was eaten everyday.

"So our seasick Prince is up." Arthas said. He was at the table reading a book. "Are you sure you shouldn't be resting in your cabin?"

"Alric is feeling better. He just needs something to eat." Jaina said and sat down at the table and motioned for you to sit down next to her.

"Two days of sickness is not fun." You said and sat down.

"I can see that. Frankly you look like shit." Arthas said to you as you took the first bite of the bread.

"Arthas." Jaina said with disappointment in her voice.

Arthas has been pretty cold to Alric this trio, and sadly that's an improvement to hostility from their first venture. He might warm up a bit over time, which we certainly want considering he's the heir to the ruler of Lorderon so let's play nice for now.

I'm not sure we're ever going to get Arthas on side. As long as we maintain his neutrality and get a chance to plead our case with Terenas it's worth it.
Feel bad for Alric, but his duty never ends.
>>
You finished chewing the piece of bread and took a sip of the water. You purposely took a bit long before you disregarded what Arthas had said.

"What do people usually do aboard a ship? Other than being seasick?" You asked them. Both Jaina and Arthas must have realized that you wouldn’t make a note of being called looking like shit.

"Well some like to read books or spend time just generally socialising with other passengers." Jaina mentioned to you.

"What have you done while I was sick and stuck in the cabin?" You asked back.

"I enjoyed the weather and being on a ship. It had been a long time since I was on a ship like this, so I have to take advantage of it." Jaina said and smiled.

"What about you Prince Arthas?" You then asked him.

Arthas gave you the look of being surprised that he was asked a question by you.

"As Jaina said, some people read a book and I have done just that. Of course the marines aboard this ship do their daily drills so I joined one yesterday." Arthas said.

"I did see that." Jaina said quickly.

"How was it? I mean Jaina has her staff and you are going to pick up the paladin's warhammer. How different was it to that?" You asked Arthas.

"You are correct that it was different. We trained with cutlasses first and then with wooden staffs substituting boarding pikes." He said to you and Jaina. "Actually when we sparred with the staff, I beat one of your men. Lieutenant Beckston I think was his name."

"Interesting, it seems that your sparring went well." You said back not wanting to dig any further. You have to ask the man himself how it went.

"I had good teachers." Arthas said and gave you a smile.

That was one of the many differences between you and him. Your teacher was Normand Garside, while he had multiple who most likely were experts.

You finished eating the apple slices as he spoke.

"Jaina, do you think the sparring went well? You after all were watching it?" Arthas asked her.

"Oh I am not a great fighter, I can’t really say." Jaina answered and brushed the question away. "But if I have to say, it did go well, you won after all."

Arthas seemed to be beaming with self-confidence having heard that.

You finished eating the bread and only a pair of crackers remained.

"I think I will go to the deck after finishing these." You said to them. "Watching the horizon is said to be helpful."

"That sounds like a plan, I will escort you there, but then I go back to my own studies." Jaina said and it did seem like Arthas wanted to protest it, but in the end didn't.

A few moments later you had returned the bowl and with Jaina walking in front of you, you reached the deck. The fresh ocean breeze hit you again.

"Thank you for guiding me to the food." You said with a laugh to Jaina.

"I presume you would have found it either way, you looked hungry!" Jaina said and laughed.

"And I am still a bit hungry. I will have to get more food later after seeing if my stomach can handle it."

"That is probably for the smartest. You do that, I will go back to studying. Get well soon Alric."

"Thanks Jaina."

Rest of the day went without issues. You spend some time on the deck watching the horizon and enjoying the pleasant weather before returning to your cabin to rest. With the help of a mirror you cleaned yourself. Shaved the stubble, brushed your hair and got a clean set of clothing ready for the next day.

The weather continued to be really pleasant on the fourth day of the trip. You felt quite normal after having eaten better last night and after doing some stretching, you didn’t feel weak or out of breath.

Seeing this you went back to the deck after eating breakfast. Today you could do something instead of just resting.

"Good morning Prince Alric." Lieutenant Beckston said to you after seeing you. "You are looking quite good today."

"Thank you Beckston. I heard you sparred with Prince Arthas." You said to him. "I heard you were beaten."

"Well Sire, there is getting beaten and getting beaten." He said with a crooked smile.

Immediately you realized what he really meant.

"You lost on purpose? Why did you do that?"

"Yes Sire. I realized how it would have looked if I had whooped his ass." Beckston laughed.

"Which you would have done."

"Which I would have done. He has very good footwork and is tremendous with a blade, but with a staff or pike, he is a pure beginner."

Lieutenant Beckston had done a smart thing. Someone necessarily not Alteraci, but in your service beating Prince Arthas even if it was just a sparring session wouldn’t have looked good.

"You wouldn't lose to me on purpose?" You asked him.

"No Sire, that I wouldn’t imagine doing." He answered again with a laugh.

After the sparring session talk with Beckston and ask him what he thinks so far of the travel, and the people with us. We would also like to know, if he and his men are happy to serve under us and live in our lands. If he has any questions or ideas, we wouldn't mind answering them (and consider those ideas). Let s see what he has to say, it s important to talk with our officers and he might give us good advice. Or just be honored to talk with his lord freely.

You leaned to a railing and watched as the marines gathered on the deck. Several sailors also joined them and picked the wooden training swords and weapons. Their instructor ordered them around and soon the sailors and marines were facing each other and sparring with their wooden weapons.

You watched them go through their drills, how they fought with their training weapons and who was winning what sparring fight. How they handled their blades or how their footwork went was really interesting and you found yourself to be completely concentrated in it. How the marines moved and fought were so different compared to what you had learned.

So of course you wanted to be part of it.

Walking to their instructor you asked him if you could join the next drill. The instructor at first was hesitant as he had learned that you had been seasick for the past few days, but you managed to get him to allow you to join them.

When it was time to join the next drill, you threw your jacket away and picked one of the wooden cutlasses they were using. You got a few curious looks from the marines and sailors as you joined them, but as everything continued as planned, they quickly accepted your presence.

At first you went through a few basic sword drills before transitioning into a counter drill. You had to attack your opponent and they had to counter the strike as they had been taught.

Quickly though your reliance on the Alteraci Footman Drill started the show as you pulled out counters and ripostes the marines hadn’t faced. One by one as your sparring partners changed, you countered their strikes in unexpected ways and found time after time that your ripostes found their mark. Soon this caught the eye of the instructor.

In a moment the instructor was sending the marines one by one at you with a goal of gaining a slight tap on your body, while you defended, ducked and weaved, before finding that golden parry that would allow you to strike back.

One by one you danced through the deck of the ship, blocking and getting those hits in. One by one the marines and sailors that were participating in the drill were beaten, some of them even twice.

1/2
>>
>>5076225

As you fought your way through the marines, you felt alive and fell. The seasickness of the past few days felt like a thing of the past and your ankle that was injured during the fighting with the orcs felt completely normal. You felt fine, you felt healthy.

The instructor ended the drill and thanked you for participating in it. He would have a lot to teach them after the beating they took from you.

Frankly the only reason you beat the marines in the sparring was that you were using wooden training weapons. You aren’t supposed to go all out and hit your opponent with full strength nor were you wearing your armour. This wasn’t as serious as it could have been.

Having returned your training weapon, you stood on the deck of the battleship and you were quite tired. The exhaustion felt really good after several days of inactivity and really since the battle with the orcs you hadn’t done anything physical. You cursed in your mind that your fresh set of clothing was now sweaty as you swiped excess sweat off your brow and tried to get your hair to stay away from your face.

“That was a fine showing Prince Alric.” Said Lieutenant Beckston to you. He had been watching the sparring session from afar. He handed you his waterskin from which you drank a lot.

“Thank you Beckston.” You said back to him and handed the waterskin back and picked up your jacket. “How do you think the sparring went?”

“Sire, you looked as nimble as before. If I were to say, your ankle has healed properly.”

“I think so too, it felt good to do some sparring, to have some action.”

“That is very good to hear Sire.”

>>5076226

You and Beckston continued to chit chat for a moment before you headed back to your cabin. The sparring had been taxing and you did need a rest as much as you felt normal. You knew that the rest of the day would go with stretching and gaining back the energy you had just spent.

With the fifth day the swift winds and mighty waves appeared again and you felt slightly seasick again. The rolling motion was as bad as a few days ago, but you soldiered on and spent that day mostly resting and eating. You did spend some day on the deck and watched as the waves threw water across the bow and deck. It was oddly soothing to watch the battleship plow through the waves.

On the sixth day the news was that you would be on schedule. You would arrive at Stormwind tomorrow as the swift winds of yesterday had helped you to gain what you had lost with the pleasant weather of the days before it.

Hearing this news you were frankly happy and couldn’t wait to get off the ship. While you had somewhat gotten used to being onboard a ship, it really wasn’t something you wanted to do that often. Immediately you did realize that you had a similar return trip ahead of you, but you deliberately put that away in your mind and opted to forget it.

It did mean that you had a day before the busy bustle of Stormwind would be upon you and what you did or met was restricted by the events of those days. You could prepare for the potential meeting with the lords and kings of the Alliance or you could just spend the day doing relaxing things.

>Mentally prepare for the meeting. Think and plan what you will say and how you will argue your position if needed. You have to be prepared for it as best as you can.

You didn’t leave your cabin outside of having to go eat something and a short break in the middle of the day to catch some of the fresh ocean breeze.

You paced in your cabin and went through what you would be talking about and how to carry yourself. Small things like how to greet others and whom you greet. These were all small things you had to remember and then apply during the meetings.

One thing that did come to your mind was the lack of actually good clothing. You had your clean white shirts, brown breeches, leather jacket and the khaki chaperon. They were fine clothes when doing things outside or meeting people in less official situations or places, but in Stormwind you could either be mistaken as someone else or not being clothed for the situation. Maybe you could find some better clothes in Stormwind, but they most likely cost you and you don’t really have that much wealth with you.

Frankly, you were quite nervous when you woke up the next day. This was the day when you could have a chance to meet with the royalties or just present yourself to them. The first impression would be quite important, but you knew you would have some time in Stormwind to build your reputation and show the best things about you.

You met Jaina when you ate breakfast and asked her how things would happen when reaching Stormwind. She didn’t really know it either, but she presumed that you would disembark first and then wait for King Terenas and his entourage to disembark.

Not long after the breakfast you saw and heard the seagulls. A group of them came to greet the battleships and not long after you saw land for the first time since leaving Southshore. You could see fishing vessels and farms near the coastline. According to one of the sailors, it would take a few more hours till you were in Stormwind.

The walls and towers of the rebuilt Stormwind were magnificent. You had been packing your stuff back into the travel chest and double checked that you had everything with you. Now standing on the deck, you leaned to the railing and watched as Stormwind got closer and closer.

As you stood on the deck, the sailors and marines on the ship were busy as they prepared to dock the large battleship into the harbour. You didn’t know much from sailing, but when you watched the men work, you could see that they were professional. Same time you also noticed how the battleship Orion stayed back and allowed you to dock first. Seems like Jaina was right.

Slowly, but steadily the large battleship wiggled its way and through the effort of dozens of men, the large ship was soon docked next to a pier and large ropes were fastened to keep it in place. A large gangplank bridge was quickly erected and you could get off.

“We should wait before we are given the order to disembark.” Said Jaina who had changed into her mage outfit. “Are you ready Alric?”

“I think I am.” You said back.

“Good, so stick close to me. I will handle the talking. Just greet whoever you meet and nothing else.” She said to you.

You had disembarked a moment ago and Jaina and Arthas stood in front of you with the ship's marines, Lieutenant Beckston and his men behind you. A small army of sailors and servants from Stormwind stood around you and waited as battleship Orion docked. Not long after you saw the first people disembarking from it.

Lord Uther walked first off the ship with his cohort of paladins with him. They walked towards your group and Uther greeted Arthas and Jaina loudly. He then saw you and his gaze immediately became serious. Shaking the hand of Arthas and bowing deeply to Jaina, he turned towards you and took several steps to get closer before he leaned down to be able to whisper.

“I see you are here.” He whispered to you. “Whatever you do, do not present yourself to King Varian. Not now, not yet.”

Uther shook your hand and moved away from your group before stationing himself and his paladins opposite of you. Soon you saw why. From the battleship arrived King Terenas with his cadre of guards and servants. Same time from left of you a large man in a magnificent suit of blue armour walked forward with his servants. He was King Varian Wrynn and the descriptions you had read from the books couldn’t describe him accurately, for immediately you saw that the man was a born warrior and a leader.

As King Terenas stopped between your group and Uther’s paladins, you saw someone amongst his entourage. A woman with long blonde hair and a bluish gray dress stood there. You watched her for a moment and then she turned her face towards you, you saw her blue-green eyes. The moment your and her eyes locked, you knew you had seen the most beautiful woman in the world. And so two of you continued to stare at each other without blinking.

“King Terenas, I see your children are here. It has been some time since I saw them.” King Varian Wrynn said and knocked yourself out of whatever trance you had been in.

“Yes, you do remember my daughter Calia.” King Terenas said and the woman with whom you had locked your eyes with, stepped forward and greeted King Varian.

So she was Calia Menethil. Sister to Prince Arthas and a member of the Menethil family. But most importantly, you now knew her name.

“And there is Prince Arthas. It has been awhile since we have seen each other.” King Varian said and stepped towards him. “You have grown.”

“I have King Varian.” Arthas said back to him.

“And then we have Lady Jaina, it is so good to see you again.” King Varian greeted Jaina.

“It has been years since we saw each other, I have always been elsewhere when you were around.” Jaina greeted back.

King Varian smiled back to her as he shifted his gaze towards you and your men. Standing behind Jaina and Arthas could make you be dismissed as a servant and not as a prince. Jaina had said to follow her and greet if you are greeted, but Uther warned you not to do it. To not greet King Varian Wrynn.

>Greet the King Varian Wrynn as a Prince Alric Perenolde of Alterac. You have nothing to hide from him.

I don t trust Uther one bit, because he still will smite us with one action of ours that is considered a danger, and he hasn't done much for Alterac or us for that matter. But this is clearly an invitation for not receiving his wrath or the one of his order, so i can take that. Uther likely knows more about the two rulers so we can trust that.
Go nearby our men and Beckston. We will act for the moment as a mercenary captain that protected Jaina along the road, and will end the contract at the end of the feast. If anyone ask we are Captain Alric. No mention of Perenolde.

King Varians gaze stopped at you and immediately you bowed your head.

“Your Grace.” You said and kept your head down while watching the feet of King Varian. The moment he moved away, you raised your head back up.

Jaina gave you a quick glance and nodded faintly before turning back to face both Kings.

You watched and attempted to listen to what Varian and Terenas were talking about, but couldn’t really make up what they were saying. It thankfully didn’t take long for the two Kings to start walking towards the city with their entourages following close behind them. For a moment you locked your eyes with Calia before people got between you and you lost her in the crowd.

Uther and his cohort followed right behind the Kings and you meanwhile followed them. As you walked behind Jaina and Arthas, one of the paladins dropped slightly behind the rest of them and waited for you to catch him. When he got closer, you recognized the man to be Ballador whom you had met during the expedition against the gnolls.

“Prince Alric.” Ballador greeted you with a small nod. “Lord Uther wants to talk with you when you have time. He wants to introduce you to King Varien by himself.”

“Understood, thank you Ballador.” You said back to him.

After Ballador had left and reached the rest of the paladins, you caught up with Jaina and Arthas.

“I heard what Ballador said.” Jaina told you. “Lord Uther wants to introduce you?”

“Seems like it.” You said back to her.

“King Varian respects Lord Uther.” Arthas said. “Uther clearly likes you and thinks that will protect you.”

“What do you mean Prince Arthas?” You then asked him.

“King Varian hates orcs and those who collaborated with them.”

Arthas said that slowly and let the sentence sink in. If that is true, then what Uther had said to you earlier made more sense. The introduction and who does it is important.

You had walked through the docks and the city to reach the large Stormwind Keep. Large crowds had appeared and people watched as many members of different royalties were moving through the city at the same time. Squads of footmen started to appear as they kept the crowds away from you. You really didn’t remember seeing this many people at the same time since your childhood in Alterac City.

When you finally reached the Stormwind Keep, it took some time for the servants to find time for you. They had prepared a rooms for Jaina and Arthas, but the news of another prince arriving made them search for another free room. When you finally got your room, it was just barely smaller than the house you had been in Dalaran and just a tiny bit less decorated. The servants would carry your armour and the travel chest in, when they arrive at the Keep.

Arthas had excused himself and left elsewhere. Jaina was lounging on a couch while you went through the dwelling given to you. There was a separate bath, a bedroom, a small balcony from which you saw the city and the living room.

Suddenly Jaina jumped on her feet which nearly startled you.

“I know what we will do. I will introduce you to King Varian. You are after all here because of me.” Jaina said to you.

“What about Uther?”

“I don’t like to say this, but he is too martial, too strict.”

“But he knows King Varian if what Arthas said is right?”

“Alric, trust me on this.”

On the one hand, having someone who has fought against orcs and Alric's father vouch for him should give a strong impression. On the other, Jaina knows Alric a bit more personally and is aware that we've had our own encounter with the green skins, though I suppose our good paladin has likely informed his superior. Not sure what makes her think Uther is 'too martial' for the Warrior King Varian.
>Go to Uther and let him be the one who introduces you to King Varian.
I would suggest both, but I feel like that might make them both feel like we don't fully trust them, which Varian might pick up on. Sorry Jaina.

I’m inclined to agree with the reasoning of Anon >>5079703 but Jaina seems awfully confident in her position here, to the point I’m leaning towards taking her seriously.

Then again, it might just be her pure heart and youthful optimism talking. But on the other hand, Varian is not just a warrior, he is a family man too…
Additionally, she is in fact the one who invited us along, not Uther, and so we’d have to bring her up in her absence without her being there to speak on our behalf.

>Trust Jaina

Uther has looked out for us, but jaina is our friend and we are her guest.

I also think Uther might be best, but I'm curious. I'd rather go for friendship with Varian than just his approval, which I think we'd get with Uther.

>Both, have Jaina and Uther introduce you.

What if both of you introduced me? The merit of just one of you presenting the introduction should surely be enough, and if both of you were to work together to do so then that would be more than assured a smooth introduction?

“Alright, I trust you. Let’s go find King Varian.” You said and nodded a few times.

“Yes!” Jaina said and was excited.

You followed Jaina as she made her way through the hallways of the keep. Servants and guards gave you two curious looks as they most likely recognized Jaina, after all there aren’t that many mages from Dalaran in Stormwind and not many of them fit her description of a young woman with blonde hair. Meanwhile they didn’t recognize you, but you bet that rumours amongst the servants would spread like wildfire that you were here. You wondered what the servants would think about you, if a bad rumour spreads, quickly everyone wouldn’t like you.

Jaina had to ask directions a few times from the guards to reach where King Varian should be. The keep was large and had multiple hallways and stairways up and down. It felt like the keep was built by a dozen competing architects, but most likely the plan was just to confuse outsiders attempting to get in. It did succeed in confusing you.

Finally you reached the room where King Varian should be. Pair of guards stood outside the massive wooden door and as two of you approached the door and the guards, one of the two guards lowered his polearm between you and the door.

“The King doesn’t take visitors.” The guard said with a stern voice.

“But we would like to see him.” Jaina said back.

The guard glared at Jaina for a moment.

“Who are you?” He asked.

“Lady Jaina Proudmoore and…” Jaina said.

“Prince Alric Perenolde.” You answered.

The second guard gave a glance to the one questioning you and a second later received a nod from the guard. He knocked on the large wooden door before opening it and going inside.

Few moments later the guard came out and kept the door open.

“You can go in.” The guard said.

Jaina and you stepped through the door and heard the door slam shut behind you. You were apparently in the office of King Varian Wrynn. The armour he had been wearing in the morning was on an armour rack and the walls were covered in tapestries or bookshelves.

Behind his table stood King Varian Wrynn who looked out to the sea from the window of his balcony. When you and Jaina had stopped walking, he turned around.

“I heard an additional prince had arrived in my city the moment you stepped into this keep.” Varian said to you. “But I did not expect the prince to be you, you did greet me after all at the docks.”

Jaina attempted to speak, but Varian raised his hand.

“The fact that you are now is quite intriguing and it most likely has something to do with Lady Proudmoore here. Care to explain why you have brought him here? Or am I wrong?”

“You are not wrong King Varian. I did bring Prince Alric here, because I see that he should be here.” Jaina said.

“Why is that?” Varian asked back.

“Because he has done more for his people than the rest of the Alliance since the Second War.” Jaina said to Varian. “What I have seen is that Prince Alric tries to provide a better future for the Alteracis and work to make Hillsbrad and Alterac a better place for everyone. We fought together against gnolls who had kidnapped farmers, not even his people, and heeded the call of Lord Uther to take arms against them. He already fought against the gnolls and bandits even before that. And what does he get from that, an edict of some sort from King Terenas that prevents him from reclaiming Alterac.”

“So that is your goal Prince Perenolde.” Varian turned his head towards you and said. “Was what Lady Proudmoore said true?”

“Yes King Varian, I intend to reclaim my homeland and yes what Lady Jaina said is right. When the news of the gnolls rampaging around Hillsbrad came, I took my men with me and we fought against them. If you want proof of that, ask Lord Uther how he met me.”

“I will have to do that.” Varian said back to you. “So Prince Perenolde, what is your goal here?”

You had prepared for this and thought about how to answer it.

>I want a meeting with the kings and lords of Alliance, where I can speak to them about what I try to accomplish.
>I want the Edict of King Terenas lifted, reclaiming my homeland is my goal.
>I want to be recognized as member of the Alliance, just like my father was before the Second War

Well, that is strictly speaking our goal and that's what we were asked about. Meeting the kings and lords is a means to that. And although we seek good relations with the Alliance we are not in a rush to integrate ourselves into it, especially if doing that prematurely would just rub some sore spots.

Damn, that praise from Jaina though, that was pretty sweet from her.

“I want the Edict of King Terenas lifted. As long as it is in effect and the threat of the Alliance acting against me, I cannot reclaim my homeland for my people or for myself.” You said to King Varian.

“I know the Edict.” Varian said.

To which you only nodded and waited for his response.

“I was one who supported it.” He said back. “I am not that much older than you, but you are a new actor in the field of rulers. What Lady Jaina said might be true and you might not be lying, but the fact that another Perenolde is making moves makes the Alliance anxious. Including me.”

“King Varian, you don’t have to be nervous.” You said back.

“But I am, just like the other rulers are. For we have to be careful and if being careful means chaining you outside Alterac, then it should be done.” He said to you and continued. “And because of that I cannot accept what you are asking. I cannot allow it to happen.”

King Varian declined you outright, it was better than being told hogwash and given hope.

“I see, then is there anything I can do to change your mind?” You said back.

“Prince Perenolde. You have to be useful to the Alliance and then maybe we can discuss this again. Show us you are worthy of our ears.” Varian told you. “Now please exit the room Prince Perenolde and go back to your room. Stay there until told otherwise.”

“I don’t think I can change your mind?” You asked.

“No, not now.” He said back. “Lady Proudmoore, you will stay.”

You looked at Jaina who nodded to you. Whatever Varian would say, she would be alright.

“Understood, I will be in my room King Varian.” You said and bowed your head and turned around to leave. It felt tough to leave Jaina there, but she would handle it.

You had to ask a few servants for guidance towards your room, but you reached it in the end. There was a guard already standing outside the room who opened the door for you and after you had thanked the guard and heard the click of the clock, you just threw yourself on the couch and kicked off your boots.

You were frustrated how this all had started, but it was expected. King Varian was a tough nut to crack, but you hoped that during this trip to Stormwind you could accomplish something. Well you had accomplished something, you had talked with King Varian, but is that enough?

You had been lounging on the couch for some time as a group of servants came carrying your travel chest and armour. You asked one of the servants about the schedule of the coming days and the servant told you that in two days the ceremony to induct Prince Arthas to Silver Hand and to be a full paladin would happen. After that there was apparently a tournament in the city.

You asked the servant for some food to be delivered here. If you couldn’t leave this room by the orders of King Varian, then you would enjoy the room service as much as you could.

1/2
>>
>>5081012

The servants had delivered some mulled wine, grapes and grilled chicken legs to you. As you ate them, the door suddenly opened and Jaina walked into your room. As fast as the door had opened, it was closed behind Jaina.

“That man, that King Varian.” She said and was clearly pissed off.

“What did he say?”

“Nothing, nothing worth repeating.” Jaina said and took a few deep breaths. “I do not like that man.”

“He has valid concerns.”

“No no, not anything like that. If I were him, I would also have concerns. But the fact that he had the audacity to order me to stay in my room.”

“But you came to my room?”

“Exactly, I have no intentions of following said orders. Only people who can order me around are my teachers or Lord Antonidas in Dalaran or my father.” She said and put down her staff next to your armour.

“Well if you aren’t going to obey his orders, what are you then going to do next?”

“No question is what you are going to do.” Jaina said and pointed at you. “What you are going to do is to win the support of King Varian and others.”

“How am I supposed to do that?” You asked and raised your voice a bit.

“I don’t know that, but I am going to help you to succeed!”

You had knocked on the door and asked for more food for you and Jaina. The guard behind the door had begrudgingly agreed and it didn’t take that long for the servant to carry more things to eat.

“Well I asked a servant and there won’t be anything happening tomorrow, but the day after would be the day when Arthas is inducted into Silver Hand and apparently after that there would be a tournament of some sort.” You said to Jaina.

“Then what are your plans for tomorrow? If the day is free, then it should be used productively.”

Bweh, no idea why the thread refused to update until I posted. Ah well, sad that Varian won't budge. I guess even Uther wouldn't be able to convince the king, but house arrest leaves us in quite the pickle. I hope we can still be present for the ceremony and the tournament.

>I have this letter from Bill Rover to someone in Stormwind, I would like to deliver it and full will my promise.
We don't have much in the way of contracts in the city, but Rover is a trusted man of ours and his (likely?) brothers may be key to more avenues since they would be part of the local Alteraci diaspora. And besides, we did promise.

Let's get this done. Kicking Varian's ass in the tournament later might convince him.
Can we get clothes while we're doing this letter business? If so that too.

Time to do something nice. Better mention our guards and Beckston that they didn't imprison us .... yet, if they don't know things might get akward let s say. More than now
I am not surprised by this reaction. I hope we can keep things civil, and at least they let us go home. In regard to looking good in the eyes of the alliance by doing them
favours or giving free help that sounds like a long term project, unfortunately we have a realm to run and protect against ogres, fellow alteracis/bandits and orcs.
One thing is helping nearby settlements the other is long travels for help a kingdom of the alliance. And we can delegate only so much to our officers
>>
You stood up from the couch and collected yourself. Having rightened your chaperon, you walked where your travel chest was and opened it. You had to move a few shirts away before you found the letter you were looking for.

“Bill Rover, my gamekeeper and loyal officer, gave me this letter to be delivered to Stormwind.” You said and waved the sealed letter to Jaina. “I promised to deliver it.”

“Then that is what we will do tomorrow.” Jaina said to you. “Send one of your men to find me tomorrow and we will go and deliver that letter of yours.”

“Alright, that is the plan for tomorrow. But do you at least plan to eat some of the food I got ordered here?”

“Sure, I wouldn’t dare to throw food away.”

You and Jaina had eaten the food ordered before she had left for her room leaving you alone. Knowing that today you wouldn’t be venturing outside the keep and the guards would be keeping a closer watch of you, it was relatively easy to just stay in your room and not gain any sort of extra attention to you. If you were to disregard the orders, that would happen tomorrow.

Later that day when the evening had arrived, you had gotten the servants to make the bath ready for you. Lazily lying in the hot water, you thought about what you had seen and heard today. King Varian took his status and position seriously and what Uther and Arthas had said was true, he was a warrior king. He seemed to be someone who took the safety of his people seriously.

In addition you thought about Calia Menethil. For just a brief moment you had seen her, but you just couldn’t get her out of your mind. There was something in that woman that made your mind and heart spin around her.

Sinking deeper into the hot water you made a promise to yourself. While you are here, you would talk to her.

Next morning after having eating a light breakfast of bread and grapes, you opened the door of your room.

“Prince Perenolde, you shouldn’t leave your room.” The guard posted outside said.

“Yes and?” You asked back as you stepped aside the guard and continued to walk away from him.

The guard tried to follow you, but you didn’t stop until you had reached the inner courtyard of the keep. There you found who you were looking for.

“Lieutenant Beckston, I knew I would find you here.”

“Prince Alric, it is good to see you.” He said and stood up in attention.

“At ease Lieutenant, I want you to send two of your men to find where Lady Jaina’s room is and inform her that I am ready. Those two men will then guard her room. Also I want two men to guard my room. Understood?”

“Yes Sire, Understood completely.” Beckston said and saluted.

It thankfully didn’t take long for Jaina to find you in the inner courtyard. She was wearing her mage outfit including her cloak. The guards had stopped bothering you as you were surrounded by the Kul Tiran Swashbucklers.

“Good morning Alric, are we ready to deliver the letter?” She asked you.

“Yes we are.” You said back.

With Lieutenant Beckston and six of his men following right behind you and Jaina with their short pikes upright, the guards and the citizens of the city moved away from you.

You did have to ask directions several times. The first citizen you stopped didn’t know how to read and even after having told the street name couldn’t tell you the directions. A guard was stopped and he could give you some sort of idea where to go after having told the street name. Finally you had to ask a merchant for directions. For telling you where the street was, you had to buy something from him.

“This should be the street.” You said with a half eaten pretzel in your hand.

Jaina nodded as she was eating hers. The merchant had been adamant that you would have to buy something from her, so a pair of pretzels it was.

Following the address signs on the houses, you split your attention between the address on the letter and the numbers on the houses. One by one you got closer to the address written on the letter.

It was a normal looking house that matched the address. Jaina tilted her head and gave you a questioning look so you stepped forward and knocked on the door before taking a few steps back.

It took some time for someone to come to open it. When it opened, there was a young man at the door.

“What do you want?” He asked.

“Is this the right address?” You asked and showed the address on the letter to the man. He looked at the address and then nodded.

“It is, then who are you?”

“I am Prince Alric Perenolde.”

2/3
>>
>>5081393

You and Jaina sat around the table with two young men. Lieutenant Beckston stood near the door and the rest of his men were outside the house.

“So our pops is still alive.” First of the two men said as he looked at the letter.

“Your pops?”

“Yeah, Bill is our father.” Said the second one.

Looking at the two young men closer, they did resemble Bill Rover a bit. They didn’t have the beard or the shaggy hair, but their noses and their eyes were the same.

“I am Arthur and he is Alfred.” Said the first one and pointed at the second of the two.. “Pleased to meet ya.”

“As said, I am Prince Alric Perenolde and Bill Rover has been serving me since we made my existence public.” You said to two of them.

“What about your missus?” Alfred asked and gave a questioning look at Jaina.

“Oh no no no no… I am not Alric’s… missus.” Jaina said with her face turning bright red. “I am Jaina Proudmoore.”

“Ah terribly rude of us.” Arthur said back. “Our apologies Lady Proudmoore.”

“I did not know Bill had children.” You said back to them quickly and changed the subject.

“Nah, he had us. Our mother left him soon after the fall of Alterac. Said that it wasn’t a place for children to be grown. She made her way here.” Arthur said.

“Then where is your mother?” You asked them.

“Fever two winters ago.” Alfred answered.

“My condolences, I presume you haven’t told Bill.”

“That would be correct.” Arthur answered and looked down.

It really wasn’t your thing to dig further or ask questions so you didn’t.

“I promised Bill to deliver this letter to the address. I do not know what is written in it, but if he asked me to deliver it, it most likely is quite important.” You said to them.

“And for that we are grateful.” Arthur said and bowed.

“Thank you Prince Alric.” Alfred said back.

“So they were the sons of Rover?” Jaina said and maybe asked a bit.

“Yeah, completely different compared to the Rover I know. But I did what I was asked to do, I delivered the letter.”

Two of you stood outside the house of Rover brothers as you thought what would come next.

I wonder if we meet both Uther and Calia if we go to the cathedral. You like Calia, don't you, OP? Good taste.

Hmm... milking Jaina for clothing is probably a sensible option but it leaves sour taste in my mouth, especially given how much she already did for us during this trip alone. She really is the best.

Going to tournament might give us chance to earn some prize money but probably not, not only are prizes likely only to be distributed much later but also we're going to be facing much fiercer competition here. Additionally showing up as we are would maybe impress Varian some but likely would do little to reassure anyone else, and give us image of a poorly clad brute...

Well we have more than one day before the event, so it shouldn't be a problem to do one or more activity. Asking for money will be mildly embarassing i imagine, since we are a Prince. About that, does it make sense to still have the title of Prince as our main one ? Beside our brother there is no else claiming the kingdom and his crown (I don't count orcs or ogres).
Maybe we should be Prince of Alterac and Lord of Dawnhome for when anyone ask for our titles. If not King.

I'd say we should wait before declaring ourselves king, it'd feel most fitting to be crowned in Alterac City in my opinion. Not to mention the impression it would give off if we already did it to the rest of the Alliance.

“I really don’t want to ask for more help from you, but I do need some better clothes.” You said to Jaina.

“You want me to say my opinion of what fits you?” Jaina asked, a bit puzzled. “Sure I can do that.”

“Ehh no, I just don’t have enough coin with me.” You said somewhat sheepishly. “A white shirt or new breeches don’t cost that much, but if I am going to wear something finer, then that kind of clothing tends to be more costly.”

“Don’t worry about it Alric, I can lend you some coin. You just have to repay me back one day.” Jaina said and smiled.

“Thanks Jaina, I have already asked too much from you.”

Stormwind was a large city with enough services to handle the needs of the local nobility. Finding a clothier was not difficult, but finding a good clothier was difficult. You had to visit a few of them before you found the place you were looking for.

This old stone house that showed the damage from when the orcs sacked the city. The stone walls still had the telltale marks of fire. You opened the door and found a small tidy store with several mannequins and two walls having large shelves with rolls of cloth. Old man with white beard walked from the backroom and bowed deeply.

“Customers. Welcome to my store.” Old Clothier said as he straightened his back. “How can I serve you?”

“I need finer clothing, something that fits me.” You said to the Old Clothier.

The Old Clothier gave you a look and nodded.

“Good Sir, what will it be? Something that is vogue right now, light colours are wanted this summer.” Old Clothier asked you.

“I would like to have something Alteraci.”

“Alteraci? I haven’t had a request like that in ages.” The Old Clothier was surprised. “I have to peruse my books, I think I have something that can help me in making the clothing. Meanwhile I will have my assistants take the measurements.”

The Old Clothier bowed deeply and left to the back. Three of his assistants came out from the back with all sorts of tools and measuring tapes.

1/4
>>
>>5082232

Jaina had been amused as she watched you getting prodded with the tools and told to take different stances. This reminded you of the measurements the master armourer had made from you, but this was even more excessive. The Old Clothier seemed to be really accurate in his work to require all these measurements.

Speaking of the Old Clothier, he had brought out an old sketch book and had started to go through it. As you were being measured, you attempted to have a look of what he was looking at, but only saw drawings of different styles of clothing. You presumed that it was some sort of a guide for more obscure styles.

Finally the assistants had done the measurements and allowed you to relax. The Old Clothier had already taken out paper and started to plan whatever he was going to be producing for you.

“Good Sir, I have the measurements and I now know what I will be making for you. When do you need it to be ready?”

“I would prefer it to be ready as fast as possible.” You said back.

“Tomorrow it is then. We will work through the night if needed.” The Old Clothier said and continued. “May I ask where the clothing will be delivered?”

“To Stormwind Keep delivered to Prince Alric Perenolde.” You said to him.

The Old Clothier smiled and bowed deeply after having heard that.

You and Jaina had left the clothier and returned back to Stormwind Keep. There was a lot of activity there and quickly you heard that Admiral Proudmoore had arrived while you were gone. Daelin Proudmoore, the father of Jaina, was now in Stormwind.

“Alric, I don’t think I will see you that often while my father is here.” She said to you.

“I understand. You haven’t seen him in a long time.”

“Yes and if you think King Varian hates orcs, you haven’t met my father.” Jaina said and sighed.

“I see.”

“I will tell you the story some day.”

Jaina took the coin pouch that she carried with her and handed it to you.

“Use as much as you need.”

“Thanks again Jaina, I will try to repay you when I can. Really I wouldn’t be here without your help and I appreciate a lot what you said in front of King Varian. Thank you for trusting me and I will make sure that your trust in me is not misplaced.” You told her.

“Thanks Alric.” She said to you and smiled. “But I will have to go and find my father. See you tomorrow in the cathedral.”

>>
>>5082235

You had returned back into your room and in an effort to avoid causing more problems to the guards or even more blatantly break the orders from King Varian, you decided to stay in there. With the servants just a call away, it was easy living. The food was delivered when you were hungry, your clothes that you had been using earlier on the trip had been washed and dried and later in the evening you took another hot bath.

So tomorrow would be the ceremony and Prince Arthas would be inducted into Silver Hand and made a real paladin. This was a great honour to him and one of the biggest steps he is ever going to make on his way in becoming the king of Lordaeron. Maybe one day when Arthas is ready, King Terenas voluntarily retires and allows him to take the throne.

As much as you disliked Arthas, well disliking is not the correct word to use, you tried to like him, the fact that you were here to witness the ceremony was an honour to you. This was an event that historians and scribes would write about and they would mention that you were there. To be part of history felt at the same time strange and fascinating.

It was early morning and you had already eaten breakfast. You shaved your stubble and combed your hair to look as good as possible before putting on your chaperon. It would be a few hours until the ceremony would start, but most likely all of you would have to leave there early.

There was a knock on the door and immediately after that it was opened. Your hand in an instant hovered over the hilt of your sword before you recognized the familiar man.

“Good morning Lord Uther.” You said to him and greeted him with a small nod.

“Good morning Prince Alric.” He said and stepped inside. “Today is a big day, isn’t it.”

“It is Lord Uther, but may I ask why did you come to see me? I presume you will be busy today.”

“That is true, which is why I came now when I still have time.” He said and walked past you and looked out through the balcony window. The early morning sun shone through the window and bathed the paladin with light. “I heard from King Varian that you had introduced yourself to him with Lady Jaina escorting you.”

“That is correct.”

Uther turned to face you.

“You kids, I know what you are trying to accomplish, but I do think that while Lady Jaina has good intentions in helping you, it will end up backfiring.”

“What do you mean Lord Uther?” You asked confused. It did feel like one of your teachers in Alterac City was scolding you when you were young.

“The leaders of the Alliance will talk of Alteraci prince and Kul Tiran lady cooperating. Kul Tiras is one of the most important partners in the Alliance, but they pardon me from saying this, they are the oddball of the Alliance. Fiercely independent, maybe even more than Stromgarde. How would it look to the rest of them to hear Alterac and Kul Tiras being allied in cooperation?”

“You are talking about the politics of the Alliance?”

“Yes and what do you think would be the opinion of Lord Admiral Daelin Proudmoore when he hears that his daughter has been helping you, an Alteraci. It is not my place to tell you this, but the reason Daelin hates orcs is that during the Second War, Derek Proudmoore, his eldest son and big brother to Jaina died in battle. He has never forgiven that.”

So that is why Admiral Proudmoore hates orcs and those who cooperated with them. You now understood what Uther was saying. As much as it pains you, he could be right. Cooperating too closely with Jaina could mean that the members of the Alliance wouldn't look that in a positive light. You also realized what Jaina promised to tell you in the future, it was about her brother.

“Lord Admiral will always vote against anything you do, I cannot change that, but I can act as the voice of reason. And when it is time to reclaim Alterac, it can be done under my command. The Alliance would see you Prince Alric to be under their thumb while it isn’t so.” Uther said to you and continued. “But we cannot achieve that if you end up throwing more fuel to the fire. The politics of the Alliance are a quagmire and you have plenty to learn how to not sink in it."

“Then what am I supposed to do?” You asked him.

“Tell me that you are willing to follow my guidance and act when I give you the order to act.”

What Uther spoke sounded true and right. You were inexperienced in the politics, but you understood the light how things could be seen. Uther was tremendously respected and he could provide you an umbrella under which you could operate. But at same time Jaina had already helped you so much and she has put her trust on you. Would walking away from that be the right thing, especially as you had promised to not misplace that trust.

>Follow Uther’s guidance and do as told now and in the future.
>You have placed your trust on Jaina, you are going to hold on to that trust.
>You cannot decide now, doing so would be too hasty.
>Other, write in.

QM: Getting clothes vote had won, but as I wrote we got the last visiting the cathedral vote. So somewhat combined them.
>>
>>5082242
Yay, my vote mattered! And man, Uther really went 'place yourself under my thumb'. Alric will have the patience of a saint if he manages to get through this trip without going on a exhausted rant. I know I would have.
>Follow Uther’s guidance and do as told now and in the future.
Ultimately, he raises fair points even if I'm not fond of how he's trying to take command over Alric (particularly the retaking of Alterac, which he himself lead the sacking of). I say we follow him for now at least, but lets not swear any oaths exactly
>>
>>5082242
>>You have placed your trust on Jaina, you are going to hold on to that trust.
I think we should be consistent. We said to Jaina to trust us and we shouldn't walk back on our words.

Kind of want to tell Uther that we respect him as a Mentor and potential friend, and understand that he's more politically savvy than us and we probably will follow his advice. But we arent his servant, and our duty will always be to the people of alterac first.

I just can't figure out how to say it without sounding like a dick.

>You have placed your trust on Jaina, you are going to hold on to that trust.

Been catching up on the last 3-4 threads from archive and have a lot of feelings about this. Even beyond thinking that we should trust Jania - having basically given our word and shit - I'd highlight one part of what Uther is saying, "when it is time to reclaim Alterac". The question must be asked - when IS the time to reclaim Alterac?

The simple fact is, no power in the alliance benefits by our restoration even beyond the fears of us being a possible Orc sympathiser or seeking retribution for our family or being allied with the Syndicate (assuming they are even aware of that threat). Uther even acknowledges that our political goal is "throwing more fuel on the fire" and that "Admiral Proudmoore will always vote against anything you do".

This is to say nothing of Stromgarde for example who had disputed border claims with us and being a expansionist state would greatly appreciate a hinterland that they can subjugate and colonise rather than returning to an ancestral foe.

Uther may well want to help us, but I fear his timescale and method is too slow - too concerned with not upsetting the delicate balance of the Alliance - he is after all dedicated to preserving the peace as a member of the Silver Hand.
>>
>>5082242
>You have placed your trust on Jaina, you are going to hold on to that trust.
I feel like association with us is going to damage her reputation (which I’m sure she doesn’t care about, but still).
Uther raises some good points, and I’m sure placing ourselves under him is the smart thing to do. Ultimately though, I feel like the reality that multiple members of the Alliance will never be even neutral to us makes it unappealing. I also don’t want to be under his command when we retake the city.
Varian is right that Alterac is best left unrestored from their perspective.
>>
>>5082242
>You have placed your trust on Jaina, you are going to hold on to that trust.

how about something like this?

>You speak wisdom, and I am grateful for your effort in navigating this circumstance with level head and reason.
>And I am also grateful beyond words for the offer of help in reclaiming Alterac.
>However, I cannot in good conscience turn away on the trust lady Proudmoore has already placed in me.
>Rather than convincing the Lords. I'm a controlled threat, I'd rather prove to them I'm a dependable partner that seeks to mend the wrongs wrought by my father.
>I owe my people that much to be seen as one reclaiming their grace rather than being suffered to exist.
>I understand I'll be unable to reach everyone, especially with just words. But I hope to be able to convince enough that I'll be able to prove with deeds that children need not be chained by their fathers' sins.

after all do we see the world as it is, or as it should be?
>>
This is why we should have had Jania and Uther working together. I'd say our position is worse than it was before we started. Its unacceptable to be subservant to another even to Uther who while honorable and trustworthy, is of lower rank and will be seen as rather insulting.
>>
“I understand what you are saying.” You said to him.

“But you are not going to follow my guidance.” He said back and you could see that Uther was disappointed.

“Yes I cannot do that even if it risks my position further. I appreciate your words and I am grateful for your attempt to guide me, help me and be the voice of reason. However I cannot in good conscience misplace the trust Lady Jaina has already placed in me. How would it look if after all the help I have received from her, I would step back?”

You watched Uther’s reaction to this and couldn’t really see if anything had changed.

“You spoke how Admiral Proudmoore will probably always vote against me and how other members see me as a threat. I know of the history that if given free hands to act, Stromgarde would have dived in and taken Alterac for themselves. Nearly all pieces of this game are against me and I wouldn’t want to alienate one of the only people I could put my trust behind. And I want others to trust me too, I want to show them that I am a dependable partner, someone they can trust and not have to worry about me throwing it away.”

You walked past Uther and looked out of the balcony window into the city.

“I know I am inexperienced in politics, I can be naive and I can be a fool, but I do understand that I cannot reach everyone with my words alone. I hope that I can be convincing enough for them to see that I can be trusted through my actions and what I will do.”

Turning around and facing Uther again.

“After all, do we see the world as it is, or as it should be?”

Uther took a few deep breaths and exhaled. For a moment he looked just a man, not as a mighty paladin, but as a man burdened by the weight of his status before he regained his composure. Again he was Lord Uther the Lightbringer.

“Lad, I do understand. You are going to have a rocky road ahead of you Prince Alric if you want to gain the trust of the lords of the Alliance.” Uther said to you. “As much as it might make your journey more difficult, what you said about trust is true. When we first met, I did not know what to expect of you, but you haven’t given me a reason to act against you. I did receive your letter about the orcish threat and maybe something will be done against it, but the fact that you saved those peasants was the right thing to do.”

Uther walked to the door of your room, but before he opened it, he turned around and spoke once more before leaving.

“You would make a good paladin, you have your principles and heart in the right place.”

You were given a seat in the fifth row of the pews. Sandwiched between local noblemen that didn’t know you and you didn’t care about knowing them. The talk with Uther earlier this morning had soured your mood even though you knew that what he spoke was true. You recognized Glenn Greymane, Admiral Daelin Proudmoore and Thoras Trollbane on the first row. Jaina sat near them with King Varian. You could even recognize Calia Menethil sitting near them.

Archbishop Alonsus Faol stood on the altar. A group of priests stood next to him and on the other side were the legendary paladins with Uther. The aging paladin Tirion Fordring, Saidan Dathrohan and the pious, bushy bearded Gavinrad. Only one missing was Turalyon who had been lost beyond the Dark Portal.

It did not take long for the large doors of the cathedral to swing open for Arthas to arrive. He walked past the pews towards the altar and Archbishop. You watched every step he took and saw him to be nervous, but who wouldn’t be in this situation. Arthas wore a beautiful set of armour.

He stopped at the altar and knelt before the Archbishop. The ceremony would begin.

“In the Light, we gather to empower our brother. In its grace, he will be made anew. In its power, he shall educate the masses. In its strength, he shall combat the shadow. And in its wisdom, he shall lead his brethren to the eternal rewards of paradise.” Archbishop Alonsus Faol spoke.

From this moment on the ceremony was just a blur in your head. The words the Archbishop spoke, what the priests and paladins did weren’t really registered in your mind. You just were lost in your thoughts on how a bit over a year ago, you were living a relatively normal life in the farmstead with the Garsides and you didn’t have to really worry about who you truly were. Few times you had thought what life could be if you just were Alric Garside, not Alric Perenolde with all the weight and responsibilities that comes with the name. But one cannot necessarily change their destiny and yours was to be the prince the Alteracis lacked.

You woke up from your thoughts.

“Arise, Arthas Menethil, paladin defender of Lordaeron. Welcome to the Order of the Silver Hand.” Archbishop Alonsus Faol spoke again and you realized that the ceremony had finished.

Arthas grasped the large warhammer given to him and with ease lifted it up. That moment the cathedral erupted in cries of joy and people around you stood up and clapped their hands. You do not want to be singled out and joined the people.

Frankly you felt happy for Arthas, this was a huge honour to him.

You watched as the formalities were thrown out as King Terenas and Varian with others crowded into the altar. You saw how Jaina hugged Arthas deeply and next it was Calia who hugged his brother. You were content at clapping at the success of Arthas, at least for now. You did hope to congratulate him on a later date.

Arthas and the rest of the royalty had left the cathedral first, probably to prepare for the feast that would be later today in his honour. You and other members of nobility had to wait their turn to leave the cathedral.

As the nobility, priests and burghers left the cathedral, you really didn’t know what to do next. Do you just go to your room and wait for the feast and potentially the new set of clothes to arrive or do you do something else?

>Uther and the paladins were still here, they hadn’t left yet. Go talk to them.

While I would love to walk up to Uther and half-jokingly ask him if he's ready to be burdened with tutoring yet another prince after our earlier talk, we should probably get the tournament enrollment squared off so we don't just drop in last second. Also get to check what the rules of the tournament will be. Hopefully we haven't rusted since our spars with Thrall during our injury.

You thought about talking with Uther and the paladins, but decided to not bother them. They were discussing something so you let them be alone.

Leaving the cathedral with a group of nobles, you found Lieutenant Beckston outside the cathedral with a group of his men, they had witnessed the ceremony by standing in the way back in the cathedral.

You talked with Beckston a little about the ceremony and what they had seen. For the Kul Tirans this was something very magnificent to see, definitely something they hadn’t seen before and probably never see again.

During this talk you thought about what to do next. You thought about going back to the keep and staying there until the feast begins, but the tournament ground was nearby. That was the place you would go.

The tournament field was getting the final touches by a small regiment of workers. Most of the work had been done, but there was still equipment and unused wood around the field where the tournament itself would happen.

Near the tournament field was a tent village with a bunch of guards and clerks. Feeling that the place was important, you headed there and asked the first guard where to enroll into the tournament itself. Inside one of the tents you found a clerk with a big pile of scrolls.

“Good afternoon Sir, how may I help you?” The clerk asked you.

“I would like to enroll in the tournament.” You said back.

“Jousting, grand melee or archery?” The clerk asked back.

You hadn’t really trained jousting at all, you knew how to fight on horseback and how to plant your spear on the enemy, but jousting? That wouldn’t be it, neither would archery be. You were okay at hunting, but using a bow in target practice or competing in archery was out of your skill level unless you wanted to get your ass kicked.

“Grand melee, that is where I want to enroll.” You said to the clerk.

“Good choice, in the grand melee at first there will be groups of four fighting each other with the winner being the side that is last one standing, if you are forced into the ground and can’t immediately get up, you will lose. After that the grand melee continues as a single elimination tournament with the last man standing.”

“That sounds good.” You said.

“Very good, I presume you have your armour, but we will provide you with blunt weapons of your choice and shield if you opt to carry one.” The clerk said to you and continued. “What is the name I will sign you with?”

“Prince Alric Perenolde.” You said and smiled.

Having enrolled into the tournament officially, you headed back into the Stormwind Keep and your room. The feast should start in the early evening and before that you really had just time to spend. The living room was big enough for you to take out your sword and practice with it. To entertain yourself, you practiced some more unorthodox stances. Stances that wouldn’t be normally used, but felt fun to practice.

After an hour of swinging the sword around the living room, there was a knock on the door. You sheath your sword and called whoever was knocking the door in.

It was the Old Clothier with a pair of assistants with him.

“Good Prince, your new clothes are ready.” He said to you.

“This fast?”

“We are proud to call ourselves professionals.”

“Then show what you have made.”

The assistants put a box on the living room table and the Old Clothier opened it.

“First we have a robe made from Alterac orange coloured smooth silk with embroidery done with red thread. A row of golden buttons on the left side. It has long loose sleeves, cuffs have golden buttons and it has a high collar. It is supposed to be worn without an undershirt.”

Old Clothier took out the robe and spread it out for you to see. The embroidery was half geometric and half flowery and really made the orange colour pop out. It reached below your knees.

“Orange after all was the colour of Alterac, am I right?” The Old Clothier said.

“That is very much true.” You said and was astonished by the quality of the cloth and the work itself.

“Next we have the outer robe supposed to be worn over the first robe. It is made from thicker cloth, this time of crimson colour with the lining of yellow embroidery. The sleeves are half length and it can be closed with a set of golden buttons.”

Old Clothier passed the outer robe to one of his assistants and took out the last piece of clothing. The outer crimson robe was just as long as the orange robe.

“This sash is made from sturdy black cloth that is supposed to protect the under robe from wear and tear of your sword belt. It also keeps the robe tightly on you.” The Old Clothier said and smiled. “Please try them on.”

With the guidance of the Old Clothier, you took off your leather jacket and your white undershirt before removing your sword belt. One of the assistants passed you the orange robe that quite snugly fit your body, but felt really light on you. The robe was so smooth and comfortable. You closed the buttons and took the black sash that you wrapped around your waist before you tighten your sword belt on top of it.

“You can wear the robe alone without the outer garment, but they are supposed to wear both of them.” The Old Clothier said and gave you the crimson robe that you then put on.

You stretched yourself with all the new clothes and found that none of your movement was restricted. The outer robe didn’t get in your way as you went for your sword or your rondel dagger.

>>
>>5083314

“This is really well made, where did you find the plans for this?” You asked the Old Clothier. “I think I remember reading a description of this type of clothing, but it must have been from the age before my father.”

“The master of my master once travelled across the world and learned the techniques and made drawings and guides of the clothing he witnessed. I was lucky to have some of the orange silk in storage and now I got to use it.”

You looked at your reflection in a mirror and the person you saw was definitely Alteraci, but maybe two hundred years before your time. But that was perfect, with this you would definitely be seen, but also seen as Alteraci. A beneficial piece of clothing that showed that you didn’t have anything to hide or avoided to not be seen.

“I must say this is better than what I expected. You have done really impressive work.”

“Thank you good Prince.” The Old Clothier said and bowed deeply.

Now you had a quite fancy set of clothing for the feast of today.

You had paid the Old Clothier with the coin given by Jaina. The Old Clothier gave you a written set of notes on how to take care of the clothes and his address if you ever needed more clothes like this. He could make them and then have them shipped to you. Not that often he gets a chance to make clothing for a member of the nobility and he wished that everyone would see this set of clothes and be fascinated by them.

You promised that you would at least try to do that.

It was time for the feast. You had been prancing around your room with your new clothes on and carefully eaten some grapes and avoided staining the robes. You had asked Lieutenant Beckston to escort you to the grand hall. When Lieutenant Beckston saw you with your new clothes, at least he was astonished by how good they looked. He did comment that it looked a bit old fashioned, but it looked really good on you.

With Beckston and a pair of Kul Tiran Swashbucklers following you, the servants and guests that weren’t in the grand hall yet made way for you. As you passed them, they gave you peculiar looks, but they also greeted you by bowing deeply.

Reaching the closed door to the hall, you had to make the decision of how you would enter. Would you have the steward announce your arrival, or would you just sneak in without making a scene? Or maybe something between that?

>Full entrance, you have a beautiful set of clothes and you want to keep your small promise to the Old Clothier. Have everyone know that you are here.
>The steward doesn’t have to announce you, but enter from the front door like other important people.

On one hand we came here to show ourselves but I'm not convinced it's good idea to make too deliberate a showing on feast to which we were not even invited by name.

I mean, if the steward announces notable guests routinely we can be one of them, but don't make arrangements to stand out (aside from wearing the new outfit)

As much as fun it s the idea to spook people by entering with stealth, or being more reasonable with just entering along the other nobles, is inevitable that people will see us. Rumors of another Prince in the city are probably already around and our attire isn't mild, neither does it conceal his nature or his symbology and i doubt a lower noble would have one. This might be fun, at least for the faces and reactions of everyone when we enter.

You told Lieutenant Beckston and the escorting men that you didn’t require their services anymore and they were free to do as they want. Beckston saluted you before he and the men left you.

Steward stood next to the large door with a pair of guards. When there is a large feast or celebration it is customary for the steward to announce people who arrive there if they are important people. The rumour must have spread that there was an Alteraci prince in Stormwind and some most likely had already seen or recognized you. So just appearing into the feast unannounced could be seen as weird and people might get the idea that you are afraid of attention.

So the only true option was to be announced and take in all the curious and peculiar looks from the people already there.

“Good evening Sir, may I ask who you might be?” The steward asked you politely, he sadly didn’t recognize you.

“Prince Alric Perenolde, the Prince of Alterac.” You answered back.

The steward was surprised to hear your name, but he concealed it well.

“Sincere apologies my Prince, I should have recognized you.” He said and bowed deeply.

You waved his concerns away with your hand and just responded with a nod. The steward signaled the two guards at the door who then pulled the heavy door open to allow you to step in.

“Prince Alric Perenolde, the Prince of Alterac.” The steward announced you to the feast with his clear deep voice.

As you stepped inside the grand hall and that it was nearly already full with people, you couldn’t have avoided noticing for how for a briefest of moments there was a lull in discussion as people either turned to see who was coming or they gave a quick glance at you.

Two rows of tables had been set in the hall with King Varian and his guests having their table on a raised pedestal where they could watch over the feast. Prince Arthas and King Terenas sat next on his left and to his right were Admiral Daelin Proudmoore, Glenn Greymane and Thoras Trollbane. Calia and Jaina sat next to King Terenas and a woman who you thought was Queen Tiffin. You could only recognize Lord Uther and Tirion Fordring sitting with the King, probably the rest of the paladins had declined or they were momentarily elsewhere.

You took a cup of wine from a servant that signaled the people still watching to turn their heads away. The lull disappeared and the constant drone of conversations and the bards playing music filled the hall. From the clothing you could recognize a group of burghers and traders, then there were dozens and dozens of noblemen and women sitting next to the table or standing around the hall socialising. Closer to the King your eyes got, more richer and well off their clothing seemed to be. These probably were the members of the Stormwind House of Nobles. They were the old noble houses and aristocrats who had immense power in Stormwind and who King Varian couldn’t just ignore.

In your mind were the things you had refreshed back on the battleship about courtly manners and etiquette that you had learned from Maura Garside. You kept moving somewhat aimlessly to seem like you knew what you were doing as you scanned the crowds. You knew that you had made your entrance and sooner or later someone would come to introduce themselves to you and from there the proverbial ice has been broken. You would be seen talking with someone and then others would join.

As you thought about it, what you expected did happen.

“Prince Perenolde, may I speak to you.” A voice came behind you. You turned around and saw a small and wiry man that had a mousy look about him. He was wearing a set of quite normal looking clothes, not even as fancy as the clothes burghers were wearing, but he did have a red bandana around his throat. The man extended his hand.

“Yes, may I ask your name?” You asked back and prepared to shake his hand.

“Edwin VanCleef, the master architect of Stormwind and the Guildmaster of the Stonemasons Guild.” He said to you as the two of you shook hands.

“Prince Alric Perenolde.” You said back and continued. “So you are responsible for the reconstruction of Stormwind?”

“Yes, that would be correct. Of course I didn’t do it alone, but I am responsible for it.” VanCleef said with a small smile. “What did you think about the Cathedral of Light? That is my finest work.”

“It was beautiful, I have never been in a cathedral like that.” You said to him which technically was true, the cathedral in Alterac City was more like a big church and not a mighty cathedral. “But I presume you didn’t come to ask about my opinion on architectural matters?”

“Immediately into business? Prince Alric, you aren’t wasting any time. To keep things short, we of the Stonemasons Guild are always looking for prospective customers.” VanCleef said to you.

“You must know that I don’t exactly have yet a city to rebuild.” You said back to him.

“Oh definitely, rumours of the Prince Without His Kingdom have spread far and wide. What I am talking about is more mundane trade. We have plenty of all sorts of workers and artisans under our guild and we would like to diversify our portfolio of professions and sources of income.” VanCleef explained.

“So just matters of cutting stone and construction is not enough and you have to step on the toes of other guilds?” You asked as you were slightly peeved by the name the rumour called you. Your kingdom was the people that you served.

“Something like that yes.” VanCleef said to you and nodded.

>Ask VanCleef about the trade opportunities and the reasons why the Stonemasons Guild is willing to step on toes of other guilds, there is more to this than he is saying.

An interesting idea. Though what they want to gain ? First for trade with such a distance ? Resources ? Secure future contracts ? Mention that our restored realm is near more than one danger. Ogres, Gnolls, Kobolds, Orcs and lawless bandits. We aren t a stranger to war, but no decisive victory over a foe was accomplished on the homefront not even with our army many victories. So they should consider to bring some protection upon arriving here.

After this though.

“Then tell me about the trade, where did the idea come from?” You asked VanCleef.

“Early last winter there was a shortage of silver in Stormwind. The Royal Mint had bought all available silver leaving none for the artisans, with melting the silver coins being made illegal by the House of Nobles, there was no way for the supply to meet the demands. Then this trader comes with a shipment of Alteraci silver and makes a small fortune thanks to increased prices. That is where we learned, after some extra digging, about you existing.” He explained to you.

You did remember this case. Beric had sold the silver that had been mined during the autumn to a trader from Stormwind and made some extra coin with that.

“So you want our silver?”

“Potentially yes. Of course I cannot make demands and this feast is not the best place to discuss potential business deals further.”

“Well of course. But that doesn’t alone explain why to go into the territories of other guilds, they must not be happy about it?”

VanCleef let out a deep sigh and crossed his arms.

“It is not a secret amongst the people here that the reconstruction of Stormwind was very expensive. We finished our job well on schedule and without going over the budget, but the House of Nobles are saying that we asked too much and they aren’t willing to pay us what they owe us. Of course during the reconstruction we had to take significant debt to purchase the stone, materials and pay salaries and now without receiving full payment, we are struggling to pay the debt.”

“And that is why other sources of income.”

“Yes, Prince Alric you do understand. The nobles here not that much. If it comes to the worst, then we have a large number of unpaid workers in this city demanding to be paid and frankly we do not want that.”

“Mr. VanCleef I don’t think I can really help you to solve that problem as I am not that liked around here.”

“And I do not expect that, but if you are interested in talking about the trade in finer detail, finding me won’t be difficult in this city. Just ask the workers wearing red bandanas, just like one I have, and they will guide you to me.”

“I will keep that in mind. Thank you for this talk Mr. VanCleef.” You said and gave him a respectful nod.

“The pleasure is mine Prince Alric, enjoy your stay in our beautiful city.” He said back and bowed before leaving to talk with a group of burghers.

This was an insightful talk. Trade opportunities, but also information on the inner problems of Stormwind. This was unsurprising, even smaller places like Southshore or Hillsbrad have inner tensions so of course a large city like Stormwind cannot escape them.

You sipped the wine and looked around you. The bards had started to play music better suited for dancing and some of the guests had already gone to dance. None of the guests of King Varian had left yet except Queen Tiffin. You had heard that she had gotten a child recently and made the educated guess that she had gone to see the boy.

I’m kinda leery of talking to nobles after hearing the craftsman’s tale, we might be tempted to tell them something undiplomatic. Imagine making a massive public contract and then fucking over the workers after it’s filled. It’s as if they don’t realize how precious, fragile and irreplaceable public’s trust in social order is.
However, approaching Arthas with formal congratulations means including him in our gamble to which he might react poorly, to both our detriment… and usurping the spotlight might reflect poorly on us on top of that.
And standing in a corner hoping for senpai to notice us won’t likely get us anywhere…

> A group of nobles had been looking at you, go see if they have something to say to you.

Guess we’ll just have to choose our words with exceptional care.

Then again, going straight for the kings might be exactly the huge Alterac balls move we need to gain anything…

You had stalled long enough with the help of VanCleef, now it was time to go congratulate Prince Arthas. You could have done it immediately, but letting them wait a bit showed that you aren’t going to come and kiss their feet the moment it could be done.

You walked between the two table rows and caused a few heads to turn. King Varian and others had noticed you approaching and they watched you walk towards them. Stopping before the raised pedestal, you were forced to look slightly up when you faced them. You gave them a deep enough bow fitting for a prince, but not one bit deeper.

“King Varian, kings and lords of the Alliance. I am Prince Alric Perenolde.” You said to them and continued. “And to Prince Arthas Menethil, congratulations for being inducted in the Order of the Knights of the Silver Hand and being elevated into the position of a paladin.”

Arthas glanced at Varian quickly who nodded back.

“Thank you Prince Alric.” Arthas responded and gave you a respectful nod back.

“The boy at least has manners.” Thoras Trollbane said to Varian and Terenas.

“We have heard of you. Lord Uther has kept us updated on what you have been doing.” Genn Greymane said to you.

You gave a respectful glance and nod towards Lord Uther.

“Prince Alric, I heard that you enrolled into the grand melee, is this true?” King Varian asked you.

“It is true King Varian.” You said back to him.

“Then tomorrow we shall see how well it goes for you.” He said back with a grin. “Now go and enjoy the feast and have fun, that is why we are here.”

You understood that introducing yourself to them was over and gave a slight bow and took a few steps back before turning around and returning amongst the nobles and burghers.

The group of nobles that had been watching you closely had dispersed, but there were still some there and more people had moved into dancing. You took another cup of wine from a servant and slipped past a group of burghers. You tried to see if there was anyone who you recognized here, but most of the major guests were sitting with King Varian. You couldn’t find anyone who you could recognize.

Still, King Varian had told you to enjoy the feast, so maybe you should do that.

You hadn’t danced since the feast in Dawnholme just before the winter. You remember how it was fun and you frankly enjoyed it. Back then you had danced with the ladies of Dawnholme and with Monica. You had fond memories of that evening.

Maybe it was time to dance again to keep your meagre skills unrusty.

The bards had started to play music more suitable for dancing and more people joined others in dancing. There were some ladies waiting for prospective dance partners and from their looks they either were the maids of the keep or lower level nobles who hadn’t married yet. You finished the cup of wine and thought that after Kris Legace had said that you were somewhat handsome, young and a prince, that there were going to be few ladies that could say that they danced with the Prince of Alterac that one evening. It would be no wonder if they swooned after you.

You approached one of the free ladies. She had blonde hair and was surprised and covered her mouth and looked at her friends as you offered her your arm.

“May I have this dance?” You asked her.

“You may.” Was the answer.

You danced with the blonde haired maid for the duration of that song and after it had finished, you bowed and thanked her for the dance. This was enough for the rest of them to accept you.

You danced with whoever was free. Between songs you switched dance partners with other nobles and burghers who were dancing. You danced with the maids, with the noble ladies and with those who tried to find prospective husbands.

At one point you danced with a beautiful lady in a red dress that really showed her chest with the eyes that were bright yellow like the eyes of a drake.

You had stopped for a moment to catch a breath and drink some wine when someone approached you.

“May I have the next dance?” Said Jaina to you. You now saw what she was wearing. A white dress and a shirt that revealed her midriff. She looked lovely today.

“Lady Jaina.” You said recognizing where you are, being too formal might ruffle some feathers. “You may have the next dance.”

Jaina smiled at you and took your hand that you offered to her. The bards had started to play something a bit more slow so the dancing had settled into a more casual pace.

>>5087656

You escorted Jaina to where others were dancing and following the others around you, you guided Jaina a bit more closer and lowered your right hand to her waist.

And then you danced.

“Alric.” Jaina said to you with a low voice so that others couldn’t hear that well.

“Yes Jaina?”

“You really are going to fight tomorrow in the tournament?”

“Yes, in the grand melee.”

“That sounds dangerous.”

“It most likely is.”

“You better win then.”

“Jaina, that is the plan.”

You and Jaina danced till the end of that song and when it was time to switch partners, she did not let go of your hand so you two danced a second song.

You did not talk with her when you danced, but when the song was over Jaina finally spoke again.

“Thank you for the dance Prince Alric. I had so much fun.”

“It was my pleasure.” You said back and held her hands before letting them go free.

“You better win tomorrow.” She reminded you with a smile as she gave you a curtsy and left.

There was a lull between the songs and some of the people dancing had already left. You looked around and saw King Varian and others already having retired from the evening as had some of the guests. The band prepared to play the final song of the evening for tomorrow was a long day.

“May I have the last dance.” A voice from behind you.

You turned around to see Calia Menethil standing right there. She had her bluish gray dress and her blue-green eyes glimmered in the light of the dozens of candles and the faint smile of hers brought fire to your heart. You couldn't help but smile back.

“You may Lady Calia.” You said as you offered your hand.

You didn’t have to guide her close, but like an expert she pushed herself closer and guided your hands where they should be.

Calia did not speak for a moment as you danced slowly as people one by one started to leave.

“Prince Alric.” She said and looked into your eyes. “Tomorrow in the tournament, when you reach the singles elimination part, do you promise me to ask for my favour?”

Ah yes, it was a tradition for the knights to ask a favour from a lady and to fight as their champion in the tournaments for their honour. And Calia asked just that.

>Yes, I will promise to ask your favour and fight as your champion.
>I had planned on asking the favour of Jaina Proudmoore.

You can thank Kris Legace for her answer when you ate the lunch with her in Tarren Mill. Alric gained a lot of insight with that conversation and has had a lot to think when he has had time. Less spaghetti to be spilled when you understand how people might see you.
>>

>Yes, I will promise to ask your favour and fight as your champion.
If Arthas is fighting in the melee i imagine he will ask Jaina favour, honestly I don't mind either of the two. Beside that I think we have good chances to win, or at least eliminate the starting and mid opponents. It s not a real battle but we can see different fighting styles, weapons and armors being used, so we will learn more than one thing which is very useful for us.
>>
>>5087693
What a reliable smuggler she is. Gotta keep some coin around for her wares, they proved useful in the past as well.
>>
“I will do that Lady Calia.” You said to her.

“Promise?”

“Promise.”

Two of you danced the last song together. Calia, like an expert, guided you through the last few slow parts of the song she was familiar with. You danced with her, staying close to her before the bards one by one stopped playing their instruments. When the final beat by the violin was played, you did stop.

“See you tomorrow Prince Alric.” She whispered to you with a smile.

You couldn’t do anything else but smile back.

You lied on your back on the bed. You had removed your new clothing and after having drank a lot of water to hydrate you, you had just jumped into bed to rest. In your mind really were just Jaina, Calia and tomorrow. You would have to fight your way through the grand melee to truly keep your promise, but Light be damned you promised yourself to do so.

When you fall asleep, only the time dancing with Jaina and Calia was in your mind.

Next morning you ordered a good breakfast from the servants. Plenty of chicken and grapes were eaten before you called Lieutenant Beckson and a pair of his men to help you to put on your armour. If you were to fight today, you would get used to the weight of the armour as soon as possible.

Wearing your armour, you made your way to the tournament ground. With your mismatched plate mail, you could have been easily recognized as a hedge knight, but the mountain lion pelt that you weared made it clear who you are.

One of the tournament officials took your sword and guided you to take one of the blunted replacements instead with a shield. You tested numerous blunt swords how they weighed in your hand before finding the right one. You did the same with the shields until you had one that you felt familiar with. Finally when you were ready, you went into the waiting area with other knights who wanted to participate in the grand melee.

One of the officials went through the rules. If you are to be knocked down, you have a few seconds to get back up, otherwise the referees are counting you out and that is it.

You didn’t count any familiar faces in your group, but you expected a few that you recognized to survive to the second round and the single elimination part of the tournament.

The referees split you into groups of four relative crudely and told you to stay put till the orders are given. With you were two knights from Stormwind and one from Duskwood. After brief introductions, you were guided into your part of the tournament field.

The crowd cheered wildly as dozens of knights stepped into the field of sand to show the proof that they were the best. You didn’t give much thought about who you were facing, but instead stretched and prepared for the coming melee. As long as you didn’t fail, fall to the ground and managed to stay up until referees called the fight quit, you would advance. Those were your goals.

The crowd continued to cheer wildly as you stepped on the sand and soon faced the four opponents that the raffle had put you against. Luckily you didn’t see anyone that you recognized or anyone clearly more dangerous than others. All of them had their blunt swords and shields.

“Welcome to the grand melee.” One of the clerks shouted into the megaphone and caused the crowd to erupt into cheers. “Today we are going to find out who is the best fighter in Stormwind.”

The crowd and some of the fighters on the field cheered wildly.

“The winner will get a sword crafted for kings and presented by King Varian along with a small sum of coin.”

Now that sounded more to your liking. A sword and a bunch of wealth sounded like what you wanted.

The clerks and officials guided you around and soon you were facing four knights in front of you. The grand melee would start soon so you prepared yourself quickly.

“Lion of Alterac, what do you think?” The knight from Duskwood asked from beneath his helmet.

On a serious note, is Tel'Abim, judging by its name and bananas, a fusion of pre-Islamic Arabia and Africa? Is it hone to a race of men similar to the Redguards of the Elder Scrolls? It'll be hard to coordinate when we're in the thick of it, but we should avoid being singled out. “Form to me.” You shouted and the three other knights quickly raised their shields and came to your side.

“Advance, swords front.” You gave more orders and your three other team mates put their shields up and pointed their swords at their opponents.

Soon your opponents were testing how you were holding the swords and shields before throwing themselves at you. With half reckless abandon your opponents threw themselves at you. It reminded you how the gnolls had fought, no tactics, only the brute strength and skill.

You and others deflected the first attempt to strike at you before you went for a counter attack. Your blades pushed away theirs and in a moment one of them was open wide. You didn’t have to give an order as all four of you quickly struck and a flurry of blows ended with one of the opponents down on the ground.

The referee was quick to step between and ruled the opponent to be out of the tournament. It didn’t stop you.

“Aggressive advance, swords up.” You shouted orders.

You and others raised their swords quickly up and the moment your opponent was within their reach, another set of blows rained down on their helmet and the second knight dropped on the ground like a sack of turnips.

“Envelope!” You shouted and the two Stormwind knights to your left went for the second still standing knight as you and the Duskwood knight attacked the last one standing. You rained blow after a blow at your opponent and soon the referee had to stop the fight. You hadn’t taken a hit and all four enemy knights were beaten into submission.

You and your teammates stood victorious and when the referees and clerks called this round off, you could thrust your swords up in the air victorious. This was an easy victory for you, the first stage of the grand melee was completed.

You bowed to your teammates and thanked them for their performance before you returned to Lieutenant Beckston.

“Very good fight Sire, they couldn’t even get a hit in.” He said as he passed you a waterskin. You drank without reservation and after stretching your feet, you stood up and walked back to the field. The referees would soon announce who the pairings would be for the singles combat.

Keeping your visor up, you stood amongst the other knights and you tried to see familiar faces. There was Ballador amongst the crowd and you could spot your previous teammates.

“It is time for the singles elimination tournament.” Announced one of the clerks to a mighty cheer of the crowd. You now realized how many people had come to watch the tournament.

You watched as the knights around you thrusted their swords up in the air to catch some of the cheers as you stood motionless. Watching the knights around you took your full attention.

Then you saw it, a first knight approached Queen Tiffin who was in the crowd and kneeled in front of her. You could hear what the knight said, but from how Queen Tiffin reacted, he must have asked for her favour for the tournament.

Then you saw Arthas, apparently he had entered the grand melee and he hefted his warhammer on his shoulder and walked towards where King Varian stood. You could barely hear what Arthas said over the sound of the crowd, but you could see how he lifted his new warhammer towards King Varian and others. Then Jaina took a ribbon she had wrapped around her arm and carefully tied it around the warhammer Arthas carried. So it was Jaina whose favour Arthas asked.

You watched as a few knights went to ask the favour of their ladies or Queen Tiffin before you made the move. No one else would have approached Lady Calia before you.

You took several steps forward towards King Varian and others before you bowed deeply and raised your head.

“Lady Calia Menethil” You shouted aloud so that everyone could hear it. “Will you grant me your favour in this tournament?”

You watched as Calia sat motionless in her chair for a moment before she stood up and unwrapped a scarf she had wrapped around her arm.You carefully grabbed your sword from the blade and lifted its hilt to her. Calia wrapped the scarf around the hilt and after she had done it, you bowed deeply and made your way back to the crowd. You had received her favour in front of the audience and you could really feel Arthas staring daggers into your back.

The scarf Calia had given was wrapped around the hilt and when you took a good grip of the sword, you held the scarf tightly. After you there were a few more knights asking for their favour, but the clerks soon continued to keep the tournament on the schedule.

You had returned back to Lieutenant Beckston and sat on a wooden stool.

You watched how the first few bouts went and saw how Ballador easily beat his opponent before one of the clerks called your name. It would be your time to fight.

Walking into the field, you saw a knight in front of you. He had a really well done set of blue and grey armour in the style of Stormwind knight.

“Against the Prince of Alterac, Prince Alric Perenolde is the home town hero, Lord Aldous Lescovar!” Shouted the clerk on the megaphone. The crowd cheered when they heard that Lord Lescovar was from Stormwind.

Lord Lescovar kept his visor up and you saw how big the man really was. He was bigger than you and his armour made him look even bigger.

“So you got the favour of Lady Calia, you princeling.” Lord Lescovar shouted at you.

You opted to not answer and instead took your stance.

“I am going to beat your sorry ass and send you back to Alterac!” He continued to a cheer of the crowd.

You couldn’t care less what he spoke as the referee called for the match to start. You raised your sword up and pointed it at your opponent.

Anyways if he’s angry on us, he’s going to put more strength behind his blows but should leave more openings. We should aim to evade and wait for a good opportunity, no?

tried and true, don't fix what ain't broke. Save the other more aggressive fighting styles for when we're up against foes we might need the element of surprise for, such as a certain hammer wielding man. Also like >>5088478 said this guy seems like he'll be on the offense so we should try and counter that.

Lord Lescovar advanced towards you with his shield up. He moved his large sword in front of his shield to try to confuse you without much success as you just kept the same ready stance.

“Have at thee!” He shouted and lifted his sword up and opened his defence up completely.

He telegraphed all of his movements. When the sword came down, you blocked the strike with your shield and sword, pushing and redirecting his blade down on the sand. Lord Lescovar couldn’t react as your first reposte hit his right arm, then right shoulder before you pushed past him pivoting on your heels and delivering a second strike to his shoulder.

Keeping up the attacks, you lunged down and struck his right thigh and bashed him with your shield as hard as you could.

The repeated strikes on his shoulder made Lord Lescovar lose the hold on his sword and the strike at the leg made him stumble a bit. The shield bash was the final nail on the coffin and with a crash he fell face first on the sand.

The umpires quickly stepped between you and him and the referee called the match. You had won your first fight handily.

The crowd hadn’t expected the first fight of yours to be this one sided and didn’t immediately know how to react, but when you lifted up your visor and they saw your smile after this quick victory, the crowd erupted into cheers. You turned towards Calia and others and gave them a deep bow, you could feel how the kings and lords leered at you.

So it was this easy to win the crowd?

1/2
>>
>>5088792

You watched the fights that followed yours. Arthas had a slightly difficult fight against an opponent who kept moving constantly, but when finally Arthas landed a blow on his opponent's shield and splintered it with one strike, the fight was quickly over. Other local knights had similarly competitive bouts with one fun one that ended when the two knights knocked each other out at the same time. The coming fights would end up being way more competitive.

It took some time for the first round fights to end and it was time to start the second round fights. You were slightly surprised when you found out that you would be fighting in the first bout of the second round. Putting on your helmet and walking to the field the announcer started to call what the first fight would be.

“From the quick and easy victory from the first round comes Prince Alric Perenolde!” The announcer shouted into the megaphone and the crowd cheered wildly. Your quick win had apparently made you a crowd favourite.

“And against him is the mystery knight from Duskwood!”

Now you recognized your opponent. He was your teammate from the group fight, but as that fight ended relatively quickly too, you hadn’t talked with him or given a closer look at his gear.

The referee started the match as you studied him. He was wearing armour of older style made from scale mail that covered him. Under it he clearly had a quite thick gambeson to soften the blows and his helmet hid his face completely. Seeing your opponent's face can be useful so you lowered your visor and took your stance. Compared to your previous opponent, this fight would be way more serious and it was clear how the Duskwood knight walked and kept his sword and shield close to his body that he was a well experienced fighter.

Thankfully Normand has trained us in this fighting style. Btw guys what you think about talking with our officers about Alan Radan when we return ? Saving our life and risking his own wasn t something he needed to do, especially since the spy sent was a syndicate member. We could offer him to reinstute his title of knight again (since he became a bandit) and serve us, maybe alongside his men. Is something to consider, they aren t wimps anymore with all the hard work we have put them through. Still they do essentially free hard work for us beside what we need to pay for give them food, water and so on. And the reactions of some people might not be the most welcome to them serving in our army, and we did give them this sentence instead of hanging them back when we saved the people of Tarren Mill.
After the tournament is done should we look for hedge knights and free knights ? This might be the best occasion for find a decent number to recruit (or we might avoid that for their upkeep to pay, there is many investments in our lands we can do). Still knights don't work exactly well in the mountains/hills/forests of Alterac. But they can dismount at least, and there are valleys and other places with flat terrain even in our homeland or near it.

I think elevating Radan is maybe too much and might not go well with other knights, but pardoning him and giving him chance to earn the status should be fine. >>
>>5089028
How about giving him an offer between receiving a pardon now and be free of his punishment, or a promise of reinstate his status as a knight when he has finished serving his sentence (his choice?)
I figure we'd rather have a knight who can show loyalty not just to his liege, but to the men he leads as well.

The crowd cheered you, but you concentrated on this fight alone and put the cheering crowd out of your mind.

You switched between several stances and followed how the Duskwood knight responded. He mirrored or switched to more advantageous stances as two of you slowly circled each other and closed the distance one step at the time.

Then the knight attacked. Several quick steps and a textbook swing at you could have got through your defence if you weren’t as experienced. Now you just blocked the strike with your sword and immediately attempted to strike back. Now it was your time to be blocked as your riposte was deflected by the knights shield.

Two of you exchanged strikes and blocks several times and you got a good idea of how good the Duskwood knight really is. He fought with a very textbook style and clearly had an idea what he was doing, but would that be enough? You think not.

You made a bit more distance to him and forced him to approach you. When the knight attempted a good left to right slash, you responded with your own strike deflecting his sword away and giving you an opening. With a lunge you surprised the knight as you planted the tip of your blunt tournament sword into his stomach.

The force of the attack was enough to dent the scale it hit and force the knight to stumble a bit. Scale wasn’t as rigid as the normal plate so strikes like this could be surprisingly effective.

The knight recovered quickly and went on another flurry of attacks. You blocked or deflected some of them and delivered a few strikes of your own that were blocked. A third strike of yours that was blocked gave you an opening and your second lunge found its mark. The blunt tip struck the second time into the stomach of the knight and made him stumble a bit more. You immediately went for another strike that struck the knight on his side before he could make the distance.

Knowing that you had the advantage, you went for another set of attacks and telegraphed on purpose that you would be targeting the knight's body again. As he moved to block the lunge coming towards his stomach, you instead went up and targeted his helmet. The enclosed helmet should hold, but the strike could knock him loopy and allow you to finish this fight.

>>
>>5089717

The knight didn’t expect you to target his helmet and your sword hit the helmet squarely in the middle of it with your full strength behind the strike.

The blunt tip caught the vision slit as it dented the helmet. As you pulled the sword back, the stuck tip pulled the helmet off from the knight's head.

The crowd in the stands, the referees and umpires along with others watching the fight reacted to this loudly first with cheers and then with dismay.

Frankly you were dismayed too, the knight wasn’t a man, but a young woman with black hair and brown eyes. She might have even been slightly younger than you are. A small trickle of blood appeared on her brow above her right eye. Now you realized why the large gambeson, it was to hide that the knight was a woman and to protect her from too many blows. The enclosed helmet was just a cherry on top of this all.

The referee quickly went to ask her if she wanted to continue with her helmet dented and broken. A simple nod was the answer.

The blood continued to trickle over her right eye making it harder to see with it. You knew at this point that the fight would be over sooner or later, it was just a matter of time.

It was time to play this safe and by the numbers. She didn’t have her helmet so you wouldn’t be targeting her helmet, so your options were either disarming her or beating her until she cannot continue. Disarming her seemed the way to go.

She wiped the blood away from her brow with her gauntlet before assuming a more aggressive stance, she wouldn’t lose without a fight. So you gave her the fight.

You went on and attacked her with multiple swings that targeted her right arm and side. She had difficulties at blocking them and with the blood getting in her eye, it was difficult for her to see the attacks coming. Your blunt training sword delivered a strike after strike that she had more and more difficulties to block.

Then you got your opening. A stab at her right side, from which you continued the motion towards her arm. She yelped from the pain for the first time after having her cover blown. You didn’t like hurting a girl of your age, but this was the grand melee. She knew the risks when she signed up.

Having hit her arm, you quickly pulled your sword back a bit and delivered another strike at her arm. She had trouble keeping her arm steady and when she went for a riposte, it was time to end this fight.

You easily blocked the strike and with a quick swing leveraged the sword out of her arm. With a nice arc the sword flew and landed several yards from you.

Realizing that she had lost, she fell on her knees while you kept pointing your sword at her. This was a good victory after a good fight, but you couldn’t find much joy in this.

The referee and umpires were quick to step in and end the fight, but you were already leaving the field. The crowd gave you polite applause for this victory.

You sat on a bench surrounded by Lieutenant Beckston and a few servants assisting in the tournament. After you came the rest of the second round fights. You didn’t really watch them as you concentrated on what just had happened. You started to feel how the fights of this morning had started to take a small toil on your body so you carefully stretched your right arm and tried to rest otherwise as much as possible.

There was some commotion and you could see someone approaching you. The man had black hair and black beard and also had a monocle. It was apparent that he wanted to speak with you. You waved your hand at Beckston to allow the man to get through and when the Kul Tiran allowed the man to reach you, you saw that he was trailed by the Duskwood “knight” that you had fought. You pushed yourself up from the bench.

“I am terribly sorry Prince Perenolde.” Said the man as he bowed deeply. “I shouldn’t have let the girl out of my sight.”

You now saw that the girl was at best sixteen years old as she kept a small bundle of bandages over the wound on her brow. You had just fought someone a few years younger than you are.

“You could try to introduce yourself, this applies to the mystery knight as well.” You said to them.

“My apologies, I am Lord Ello Ebonlocke and this is my daughter Althea Ebonlocke.” Lord Ebonlocke said to you and bowed again. Althea Ebonlocked meanwhile opted to look down towards your boots. “I do not want the actions of my daughter and my own inaction to have caused any problems now or in the future between you and Stormwind. Tell Prince Perenolde why you joined the grand melee.”

Althea Ebonlocke was pulled and then pushed in front of her father by him. She kept watching down on your boots.

“I wanted to fight the best knights of the realm. I see how stupid it was. I want to apologise deeply for any problem I have caused. Please forgive me Prince Perenolde.” She said and bowed deeper than her father did.

Lord Ebonlocke really had approached you because of this. He seemed to see this as a major dishonor to him and his family. You really hadn’t put yourself into a position like this and frankly you weren’t that much older than her. You thought for a moment how to respond.

>Your daughter reached the second round of singles combat. You should be proud that she reached that far because she has skills to become a great knight.

That's why I'm specifically asking about Arthas using the Light mojo.

“It was dangerous for her to join the grand melee. It is not uncommon for the knights to get maimed or even during these events.” You said to her and to her father who watched her sternly. “That being said, your daughter reached the second round of the singles combat. That is an impressive feat for anyone and in the end we are all fortunate everything ended well without any unfortunate accident. I do think and believe that this is an important learning opportunity for all of us.”

Lord Ebonlocke and his daughter listened to you closely.

“You do not lack in skill, but consider the possibility how another opponent could have continued targeting your head, especially if this was a battlefield.” You said to her and continued. “Get some experience under your belt before you start rushing into things. Do you understand?”

“Yes Prince Perenolde.” Althea Ebonlocke said to you after being carefully nudged by his father.

“I am extremely sorry Prince Perenolde.” Lord Ebonlocke said and bowed deeply and forced his daughter to do so again. You opted not to wave them off, but waited for them to realize it themselves. When Althea Ebonlocke left, you cleared your throat which made Lord Ebonlocke to stop for a moment.

“Find a good teacher for her, she is good, but she can be better.”

Lord Ebonlocke bowed deeply again.

You had missed two fights during all this. Due to the irregular number of knights having gotten into the second round, after you three knights fought each other and a knight called Reginald Windsor had won. You also missed the fight Arthas had against Halford Wyrmbane who really pushed Arthas to his limit, before losing the fight to him. You did witness Ballador duel a small eternity with Gryan Stoutmantle before dispatching him and winning the duel.

So the four semi-finalists were known. Prince Alric Perenolde, Prince Arthas Menethil, Ballador the Bright and Sir Reginald Windsor. Four warriors of considerable renown.

The referees did call a break in the grand melee for the fighters in it and meanwhile concentrated on the tourney that happened at the same time. This meant that you had more time to rest and recover from the fights of this morning.

You ate a light meal of dried meat and grapes and tried to stretch and keep your right shoulder warm and ready for the next round of fighting.

During this you also did think about the grand melee. King Varian or other kings and lords hadn’t entered, neither had Lord Uther or other paladins, Ballador was the only paladin that you knew that had joined the grand melee. Maybe this was because this was a tournament made to celebrate Prince Arthas and they knew that it was smart to not even participate? It was hard to say, but as you ate the grapes, this idea did come to your mind.

One of the umpires came to tell you that the lunch break would be over soon and the semi-final pairs would be drawn in a moment. After they are drawn, there would be a moment for the fighters to get ready before the bouts begin.

You were called to the tournament field and stood beside the three remaining fighters. You were ready to face any of them as you waited for the referees to draw the names.

Prince Arthas would face Reginald Windsor.

Ballador would then face Prince Alric.

Ballador the Bright would be your opponent. A paladin that cut his teeth in the Second War and joined Silver Hand after it. A paladin of great renown and skilled swordsman that didn’t have that many equal opponents. He carried a great two handed sword normally and had substituted it with a blunt sword for the tournament.

Ballador gave you a look and smirked. He wouldn’t be an easy opponent at all.

The break continued momentarily after this announcement allowing you to prepare for the coming fight. You paced around and thought about all instances you had seen Ballador fighting. This wouldn’t be easy at all.

The Blessed Vial of Water burned in one of your pouches and you thought about drinking it or saving it after you had beaten Ballador, that is if you beat Ballador. Soon the fight would start so you would have to make the decision now.

Ballador is probably going to give us a run for our money. And argument could be made we'd want to be in our best condition going in to the match, but I think we'll especially need it after if we are to stand much of a chance in the finals. After all, we aren't in it just to make it to the finals, we're here to win!
Is what I want at least, but I'm fine either way since even if we use it now and later lose in the finals to (presumably) Arthas, perhaps that'll be a chance to build that bridge between us that he's been so eager to burn. You took the Blessed Vial of Water that you had been carrying with you and drank it all in one gulp. You would need it for the coming fight with Ballador.

You had sat down as you waited for your turn and breathed deeply. You hadn’t been nervous like this before. You knew who you were facing and you knew that this wasn’t a real fight. It wasn’t the orcs, gnolls or bandits. Back then you hadn’t really thought about jumping into a fight, but for some reason now the nervousness hit you badly.

“Prince Alric, there is someone wanting to see you.” Lieutenant Beckston said and saluted you.

“Let them in.” You said and stood up.

Lieutenant Beckston gave you a quick nod and gave a few orders for his men. They gave you room and spread out. In a moment you saw who the visitor was. A lady in
bluish gray dress approached you with a pair of guards following right behind her.

“Hello Prince Alric.” Said Calia Menethil.

“It is my pleasure to see you Lady Calia.” You said and gave her a bow.

“I don’t have much time, so I will keep this quick. If you end up facing my brother and you don’t think you can win, you can just take the fall.” Calia said to you.

“I intend to win.”

“I know, but what if?”

“There is no what if, I truly intend to win.”

“I understand Prince Alric.” Calia said and gave you a faint smile.

She approached you and took off her blue silken scarf. She then wrapped it around your neck.

“Then go and win, don’t let my brother have the day if you are so sure.” She said and winked at you before leaving.

Calia Menethil left with her two guards right behind her, you could only watch as she left.

“Prince Alric? Prince Alric!” Lieutenant Beckston called you before you recognized his voice. “They are calling you to the field.”

You felt the silken scarf around your neck and tied it better before putting on your helmet. You would beat Ballador the Bright. You knew it, you must beat him.

The crowd gave both of you applause and cheered wildly as you stepped on the field. Ballador carried his two handed sword lazily on his shoulder as he made his way to face you. You had the sword and shield. You would be at a disadvantage in terms of the reach, but if you could get inside his defence and reach, you could win this fight. Frankly you weren’t as sure if your normal tactics could bring you the victory, but you had seen how Ballador fights, there is a chance to beat him.

You zoned into the fight again and the noise from the crowd disappeared. You watched as Ballador took his position. You moved your tongue through your teeth one by one as you watched Ballador and you took your position. You were going to beat Ballador and then you were going to beat Arthas when he gets through his opponent.

I am not sure how mobile we can be, but everyone has definetly see our combat style more than once by now. Plus Ballador partecipated in the war, so he likely has seen more of it. The Alterac Footman Drill is good, but parry/deflect a sword wielded by a veteran will not be easy at all. Avoiding it and attacking when we can get near him should be good or when he overextend. Though he can likely even do that for fake it and then cut us down.

I don't think AFD is going to work as well when our opponent is using a two-handed weapon instead of a one-handed weapon and shield.

I honestly can’t decide if this or the mobility is the answer here though if we reach Arthas we’re probably going to ditch the shield.
The difference here will probably be Ballador will fight with level head while Arthas will want to school us and be more aggressive as a result.

>Success

Your plan was simple, get inside the reach of Ballador’s sword and defeat him without allowing him to swing the sword freely.

To achieve this, you probably have to sacrifice your shield and take at least one hard hit if you aren’t able to get in. You put your sword close to your body and grasped the hilt with both hands. Ballador started to take steps towards you and moved his sword around forcing you to react to his stances. You knew you had to be on defence for a moment before the opening to attack came.

Then Ballador attacked with a strong downward strike that you caught with your sword and pushed it slightly away from your body. Ballador didn’t allow an opening to happen and went for another strike that you blocked with your shield.

You had to keep blocking and deflecting the attacks until you finally had the opening you wanted. A downward strike struck your shield, shattering its rim and sending splinters flying. You felt the shock in your arm and it hurt like hell, but now it was your time to strike. You caught his sword with the guard of your own and with your left hand you guided the flat of your sword on top of the Ballador’s sword and with all of your strength you leveraged the sword down. Ballador was still holding it barely as you quickly spun your sword around and swung at Ballador with all of your strength. The blunt sword bashed Ballador squarely on his chest that staggered him slightly. You swung the sword for the second time and hit him again, then for the third time and fourth.

Going for the fifth the umpires stepped in with their staffs and stopped you. Ballador had lost his sword and you would have beaten an unarmed man so the umpires stopped the match.

“Winner, Prince Alric Perenolde!” The announcer shouted into the megaphone and the crowd cheered wildly.

You took a few steps back and lifted up your visor to see better. It hadn’t been that long of a fight, but you were still tired from it. The remnants of your shield had nearly all fallen off your arm and the blunt sword was dented. You watched as Ballador picked his sword up and you noticed the four dents on his cuirass.

“Prince Alric, I did not expect you to sacrifice your shield.” Ballador said to you.

“It was a gamble.” You said back to him

“But it worked now, well fought Prince Alric.” Ballador said and gave you a respectful nod.

You nodded back and turned to face the crowd. Locals were cheering and you could see that in the stands Calia and Jaina were giving you an applause. Noticed too that Lord Uther and King Varian gave you polite applause to which you responded with a deep nod.

1/3
>>
>>5091293

You had gone and picked up a new sword and shield. You could have continued to use the sword, but you didn’t want to take the risk that the blunt sword breaks during the last fight. You wrapped the small scarf that Calia had given to you around the hilt of the new sword and went back to catch the fight between Prince Arthas and Reginald Windsor.

It wasn’t an easy fight for Arthas. He clearly had training on how to use the warhammer, but not enough as he struggled with Windsor who clearly was a more skilled fighter. It was apparent how Windsor was controlling the fight, but couldn’t find the strike that could bring him the victory even though you saw few potential spots where it could be done.

Then Arthas finally got his chance after Windsor had missed an easy swing and Arthas swatted his sword away. For a moment Windsor attempted to fight with his shield only and actually found a little bit of success before the warhammer struck again and the shield cracked apart forcing Windsor to give up.

You really didn’t want to speculate, but it did look like Windsor had thrown the fight. A knight of that level shouldn’t make a mistake like that.

As Arthas celebrated his victory, you watched it with your arms crossed. Soon you would fight him.

The announcer had announced a short break to allow the two finalists to rest. You had been psyching yourself up for this final fight and you kept stretching your arms and shoulders and generally keeping yourself warm. It would have been great if you had the Blessed Vial of Water right now, but you probably needed it more before the fight with Ballador.

You thought about Arthas and how you would face him, but you also thought about King Varian and others. What would King Terenas think about this? Or what about Genn Greymane and Thoras Trollbane. How would they see this? Would they expect that Arthas beats you and would they be surprised if you beat him?

You also thought about Calia. She had given you her favour and then came to see you before you fought Ballador and wrapped a silken scarf around your neck. You wouldn’t want to let her down, you wouldn’t let her down. Because at the end of the next fight, it would be you who stood victorious.

The servants and umpires came to tell you that the fight would start soon and they guided you back into the field. The announcer called you in and the crowd responded to it well, but when Prince Arthas was called in, the crowd practically erupted. It was clear who they would support.

They guided both of you to stand next to each other and instructed two of you to bow to different parts of the crowd. The stands were practically full of people. As you stood next to Arthas, he spoke to you.

“So my sister gave you her favour.” He said to you. “I don’t know how you managed to do that, but I am not going to let you win. Today is my day and you won’t ruin it.”

“I do not feel justified in speaking for Lady Calia, but she granted me her favour and I will honour it.” You said to Arthas. “I do not intend to ruin your day, but I won’t insult you or her, by not giving my all. Good luck Prince Arthas.”

Arthas did not say an answer and in a moment the umpires told you to move away from each other. The fight would start soon.

You walked away from Arthas and turned around seeing him kneeled on the sand praying for the Light. Some could have called this unfair, but he now was a paladin and the connection of Light and him was strong. The warhammer he carried was an exceptionally dangerous weapon, be it a real combat or this grand melee. You would have to avoid it or deflect it away from you, but at the same time you had seen that Arthas is not ready yet in using a weapon like that. Meanwhile for you sword and shield had been the thing you have trained the most.

Arthas stood up and put on his helmet. He was wearing the same masterwork armour as yesterday and if you were compared to him, the only fancy thing you had was the mountain lion pelt. Your own trusted armour couldn’t compete with what Arthas was wearing.

You gave a one last glance at the stand where Calia was sitting in. You noticed how King Varian had leaned forward in anticipation. You would give him one hell of a fight.

“Alterac Stands.” You muttered to yourself as you closed your visor and checked the last few straps on your armour. You would be ready come hell or high water.

>Alterac Footman Drill has carried you this far and you have beaten some real opponents with it. Soon Arthas will join the list of beaten enemies.
>The warhammer is the problem, avoid it, deflect it, do everything you can to mitigate its effect. You will win through tiring Arthas out. Fight defensive.

Well we likely can't tank (m)any hits from that hammer so we will be avoiding and, if it can't be helped, deflecting... Windsor held his own but he's a beast, we probably don't need to see him facing down a dragon to tell that.
Not sure to what extent we can wear him down - that does depend on how well his Light powers restore his fatigue.

I'd say
>Fight defensively, wait for opening

Since we did not choose to poke him into fury he might have wits enough to try and bait us, so try to get a good feel of his rhythm before committing.
>>

>>Play dirty, you did not reach this far to lose against him, use all unorthodox tricks you know to beat him.

>>

We're the son of the traitor king. Pretty much everyone here is expecting us to play dirty at some point, with possible exception of Jaina, maybe Calia.

It would probably be better to lose this fight than to validate those expectations, especially after Windsor let Arthas win.
>>
>>5091731
So long as we don't break any explicit tournament rules they can't cry foul. We need the sword as the future king of Alterac and the money will go towards buying the Dalaran masterwork armour.
>>

>The warhammer is the problem, avoid it, deflect it, do everything you can to mitigate its effect. You will win through tiring Arthas out. Fight defensive.
no doubt hes a tad angry at us.
>>
>>5091742
Neither the sword nor the armour or money will help much if we leave this place with wrong impression. This was a diplomatic exercise first, prize money and weapon would be a very neat bonus though.

Still, I'm not sure if Varian is pragmatic enough to appreciate pocket sanding Arthas on his graduation day just to win; Calia probably won't like it either, and she's the one that probably has best chances of persuading Terenas, who in turn will need some arguments to vouch for our credibility.

Defeating Arthas at any cost could easily mean failure of our primary objective just to satisfy our pride and greed, which could maybe make for interesting drama but would prove setback in our efforts. And upset our friend Jaina, and our crush(?) Calia. So I'd rather we win properly, or lose while giving a good showing.

I want the reward for a win real bad, but dishonering the prince that's being celebrated is a quick way to find ourselves on everyone's shitlist. Meanwhile, the Alteraci style focuses on sword and board if I've understood it right and I'm pretty sure a shield will be next to useless against Arthas' warhammer.

You are mostly correct, Alterac Footman Drill puts big emphasis on getting ripostes from blocked/deflected attacks with your sword and shield. Sounds very defensive, but you have to be constantly pressing your opponent to get those ripostes.

The referee started the match and you closed your mind from the cheers of the audience and concentrated completely on Arthas. He lifted his warhammer up and took a few quick steps before switching into running.

He swung his warhammer quite close to his body and his first two swings were more of a test to see how you reacted. Both swings were easy to step aside, but then Arthas switched into more longer reaching swings in an attempt to catch you.

You kept your shield up and circled left and right and stayed away from the warhammer. When you tried getting closer, Arthas moved his warhammer closer to him to have a better control on it. A downward swing nearly caught your shield, but a quick jab of his caused the first hit of this bout. It wasn’t that big of a hit, but showed another style of attacking as the warhammer struck the shield like a big blunt spear and bounced off harmlessly.

You continued taking steps back and moving left and right. The constant pressure from Arthas had made you lose the focus where you were on the tournament field and you suddenly found your back against the wooden railing of it. A rookie mistake that should have happened. Arthas had successfully pushed you into a spot where you couldn’t move back.

Arthas knew it too and went for a wide and slow strike from his right. If that hits your shield, you were sure it would splinter it into pieces.

So you dived to your right and rolled away from the warhammer. Arthas missed his swing and went for a downward strike that you couldn’t dodge away as you just had barely stood up. Realizing this you braced your feet, put your sword up and pushed it with both of your arms.

Your sword caught the warhammers shaft and it slid down and stopped by the guard. Arthas shifted his right arm up the shaft and tried to overpower you. He was taller and stronger than you and you knew that you had no chance of trying to hold the warhammer back.

So you quickly stepped to your left and guided the warhammer down. With Arthas pushing it down, it quickly hit the sand with a thud and gave you an opening. A quick downward swing hit Arthas on his right pauldron and then bounced down to smack his arm. Before he could react you pulled your sword back and found the small gap between the pauldrons and the back of his cuirass.

Thrusting with a blunt sword wasn’t effective at all, but you knew that the rounded tip must have hurt when it hit the arming jacket. Immediately you started to take steps back towards the middle of the tournament field and watched as Arthas turned around to face you again.

>>5092492

You saw that he was breathing more heavily. Swinging the warhammer must have been taxing, but he hadn’t really slowed down at all, feels like with every swing he was getting a better idea on how to fight with the weapon. It must bother his arms though, you remember swinging a wooden mallet when you were younger and your arms felt completely toasted after a while. And now you also managed to tap his right arm with your sword. He wasn’t tired yet, but if this keeps going, maybe soon you could have the advantage.

But your own feet started to feel the dodging around a bit. They weren’t tired yet, but you knew that you couldn’t continue dodging forever. The way Arthas fought, the reach of his swings and styles started to be familiar to you now. If he doesn’t pull out his own tricks, you thought that you could start pressing him and getting those hits in.

Tire him out some more, get him used to the idea that we're sticking to a certain range so he might swing close to his body less, giving Alric opportunity to close the distance when Arthas' arms are properly tired. He might make more decisive attacks himself when he starts getting tired though, so I'm not sure.

So we can’t rely on outlasting him, it’s time to fall back to what we’re good at.
I do expect him to draw on Light at some point, so we need to be prepared lest he break our guard. I I certainly hope he won’t be one to resort to underhanded fighting either - it would make him look doubly as bad as it would for us.

You took a better stance and kept your shield and sword ready and well ahead of your body. Arthas stretched his right arm before picking the warhammer back up and starting to take steps towards you.

He closed towards you and switched the warhammer from right to left and back several times while keeping it closer to his body. Same time you took steps closer and prepared for his first attack.

It was a standard downward strike aimed at your shield that you avoided and tried to take a quick step closer for a quick counter attack, but Arthas pulled the warhammer back and jabbed it towards you. The warhammer tapped your shield and you went for another attempt that this time Arthas parried with the shaft and forced you to take a few steps back.

He went for another set of calculated strikes while keeping the warhammer close to him and more controllable. You blocked one jab and attempted to push the warhammer away from another swing, but you couldn’t really succeed. So you went and attempted to take the initiative. After a failed swing you pushed closer and went for different strikes. You attempted to hit him from different directions, but he had shifted his hands to opposing ends of the warhammer’s shaft and used it like a staff to block your attacks.

And then he went back into the offensive. Several attempts to strike were followed by your attempts to counter them or find the riposte.

Then you made a mistake. You were a tad too slow in pulling back and one of his strikes grazed your shield. You could feel the shield giving away a bit from the attack, but it also gave you an opening. As Arthas let the warhammer hit your shield and before he could pull it back, you lunged quickly and planted the tip of your blunt sword on his cuirass. You had aimed at his armpit, but he had moved just lightly. The blunt tip didn’t dent his armour, but left a scratch as it slid upwards and severed the cloak pin with the insignia of Lordaeron off his armour.

You pulled back as quickly you could and investigated your shield. You could see a small crack inside of it and knew that it wouldn’t hold if struck properly. The blow had enough strength behind it to cause your arm to tingle a bit, but it was nothing to worry about, not yet at least.

Arthas let the cape fall down on the sand and moved again his hands closer to each other. He had been fighting more steadily and you just couldn’t get through his defence, but if he goes back to attempting to beat you quickly with big swings that the stance suggested, maybe your current plan will work.

You prepared again and went back into your stance, Arthas took a few steps and then sprinted with his warhammer high.

Now was the time, you were going to win this fight. You were sure about it. You matched the pace Arthas was coming towards you and as he swung his warhammer down, you quickly stepped inside his reach and swung your sword with both hands as hard as you could at his arms.

The sword impacted and hit his left arm with considerable force causing Arthas to fumble a bit and lose control of the warhammer for a moment. Arthas grunted from the pain and the warhammer hit the sand with a thud.

You again swung your sword again and attempted to hit his arms again, but Arthas released the hold on the warhammer with his left hand and barely spun aside to avoid being hit. His wits were quicker than yours and as you pulled your sword back and went for another strike, he punched you with his left gauntlet. The punch hit you straight at the visor of your helmet and the visor buckled moving the small seeing slits off.

You scrambled quickly some distance away from Arthas and attempted to push the visor straight, but ended up just jamming it up to give you the ability to actually see something. Arthas had picked his warhammer up and came again swinging it. You stepped back from a wide swing and landed another hit, this time on his right arm. Arthas retaliated with a quick unorthodox jab that caught your breastplate denting it a bit and your quick counter nearly caught his right gauntlet, but barely missed.

Without your visor obstructing your vision, and not providing any protection to your face, you saw how laborious his movement now was. Each swing was done with a grunt and you could just imagine how much his arms must have been hurting. You personally didn’t feel that much better. You did not have the same stamine as Arthas had, but you had that feeling that you could beat him. You were a bit more ahead of him.

Arthas knew it too and went for another offensive. He swung the warhammer again and you dodged it. Another pair of jabs of which one you blocked and countered with a swing of your own. It hit his right arm, but instead of attempting to recover, he made a mistake. Gave you an opening.

Arthas switched his warhammer from right to left. He went for a downward swing that was just way too slow and gave you a chance to get inside his reach.

The warhammer came down and its shaft struck your left pauldron. You caught the shaft with your shield hand and pushed it between the pauldron and your mail aventail, getting the head stuck behind your back as Arthas tried to immediately pull it back.

Same time you swung your sword and hit his left arm again causing him to lose his grip on the warhammer with it. You swung again and the sword impacted on his right arm this time, but he managed to hold on. A third was stopped by Arthas grabbing your wrist.

He was stronger than you and it showed. He managed to stop your right arm and started to twist your wrist. You attempted to pull your right arm back, but he held on to it. Same time you kept your hold on the warhammer stuck on your shoulder and prevented him from pulling it back. Two of you struggled for a few seconds and took steps closer to each other.

He pulled with his right arm on the warhammer, he pulled and twisted with his left arm that really hurt your wrist. But this was exactly what you had been looking for.

You let your sword fall from your hand, surprising Arthas just for a split second. You hooked your right leg behind his, lifted the warhammer and gave a quick push with both of your arms and body.

Arthas lost his balance and with your leg behind him, he could take the step back and instead started to fall on his back. You pulled your hands off and jumped after him.

With a crash and thud Arthas struck the sand and you were on him. You pinned his right arm with your left knee and planted your right leg over his abdomen. The rondel dagger was drawn as fast as you could and you planted its tip on his throat.

For a second Arthas tried to grab your arm, but realized it was futile. The umpires were quickly around you and pulled you off Arthas.

You had won, you bloody well had won.

You stood up and looked around. Arthas was still on the sand and you started to hear the cheers of the audience. Your breathing was ragged and your mouth felt dry from dust and the fighting. Lieutenant Beckston along with a few of his men had immediately rushed the field after seeing that you had won.

“You did it! You beat him!” Beckston shouted and hugged you as others clapped on your back. One of them passed you a waterskin and you drank from it splashing half of the water over your face and armour.

You looked at Arthas again, he was still laying on the sand on his back.

>Go pull him up and thank him for a great fight. He deserves a round of applause.
>Show some respect to him, but you shouldn’t go help a defeated man to get up, it will hurt his honour.
>Let him lay there, he will get up when he wants to.

QM: The second set of rolls was to see how well the fight ends in your favour, if the roll had been a bad one, an injury or worse could have happened. Now only one’s pride took a blow.

>>Let him lay there, he will get up when he wants to.
That was a good fight.

Hah, in the end it is Alterac that stands.
>Thank him for a great fight and offer a hand to get up if he'll take it. He deserves a round of applause.
Had to check the archive to see how Alric treated Thrall after their spars to see what felt in-character. Imagine if we treated a fellow prince than we did an orcish slave.
I'm not sure if Arthas will accept our help, but I figure making the offer can't hurt and I'm sure it'll give a good impression to everyone else involved if we show grace in victory.

Is it ok that we pulled out an actual dagger during a duel?

Yeah that could have turned extremely ugly.

Offer him our hand to pull him up.
If he doesn't want it, that's his choice.

In tournaments and grand melees etc using daggers or other secondary weapons is quite allowed as long as the intent is not to hurt others. Now if these were real fights, everyone would have bounced on all the unarmoured or otherwise weak being spots on their opponents armour.

So while some might complain, most are very pragmatic about fighting and know that they would have done the same.

You pushed yourself past Lieutenant Beckston and walked towards Arthas. You noticed that he was following you with his eyes and pushed himself up a bit to be able to sit.

“You are one hell of a fighter.” You said to him. “It was my honour to fight you today.”

You offered your right hand to him.

“Now take it, the crowd will like it.” You continued and you could see how he leered at you.

But he did take your hand and you helped him up. The crowd cheered and started to applaud him and as you faced him, you gave him a bow.

Maybe a bit to your surprise, Arthas returned the bow before turning around and walking off the sand.

You walked back to Lieutenant Beckston, of whom the umpires were carefully asking to leave the field. You told him to follow the servants as you were guided towards the stands where King Varian and others were standing.

You approached the stands and one of the umpires that followed you gave you some gentle reminders of what to do. Stopping in front of the stands, you gave a bow to King Varian and then towards Calia as guided before standing in attention waiting for him to talk.

“Congratulations Prince Alric Perenolde.” He said into the megaphone. The crowd cheered with the mention of your name. “You beat a few of the best warriors in the whole of Azeroth and now you stand in front of me as the victor. Before you came to our city, a far majority hadn’t heard about you, but now everyone knows your name. So enjoy your fame and renown, and hold your head up high.”

It was a simple speech, nothing too fancy, but you didn’t expect that much more from him.

The umpire whispered to you to walk up the stairs and go meet King Varian.

As you walked up the stairs, you realized that you would have to walk past the other kings and the paladins before you would reach King Varian.

“Lad, you did well.” Said Uther to you.

“You fought well.” Thoras Trollbane said and nodded. Genn Greymane just gave you a gentle nod and Admiral Proudmoore opted to look past you.

“It takes a lot to beat my son.” King Terenas said and gave you a curious look.

King Varian stood in front of you and one of the servants gave him a longsword in its scabbard. You gave King Varian a gentle bow, removed your helmet and passed it under your left arm.

“They lied somewhat when they mentioned the sword having been crafted for a king. Actually it is a bit of a failure, it was supposed to burst on fire when taken out of scabbard, but the enchanters had failed at some point. The sword is grey like a burnt out piece of coal, but it still radiates with immense heat and when swung, it starts to smolder.” King Varian said to you and continued. “Draw it from the scabbard, swing it and raise it high for the masses to see.”

King Varian presented you with the scabbard and you put your hand on the hilt of the sword. You could feel how it was warm and how the parchment wrapped around the hilt hadn’t been set on fire.

Then you drew the longsword and saw how dark grey it was. The sword immediately started to smolder as it moved through the air and when you swung it up for all people to see, embers flew out of it and the dull grey started to turn bright red and white, like it was burning without a fire.

The crowd cheered and started to chant your name. You had never felt or seen anything like this. Thousands calling your name.

“It is called the Cinder Sword and it is a potent magical weapon. May it serve you well Prince Alric.” King Varian said and joined in the applause.

You looked around at the crowd and the past King Varian. Calia and Jaina had joined the applause with Queen Tiffin. You saw Calia and her genuine smile that immediately burned into your mind.

I think this is a good spot to stop this thread. I got the quest into one of the early parts that I have really waited and partially through it. In addition I got the grand melee done before the Christmas holidays. I will have more time, but sadly no access to my PC and I won’t start writing updates with my phone. So there will be a short break till a bit after the New Year when I start thread number 10.

The thread will be archived shortly and as always if you have any questions or comments, please go ahead and say them. I will attempt to answer them as best as I can. I will inform when the new thread goes up on my Twitter and probably also on /qtg/.

Thanks for the thread, OP, was great fun! And with proper intense finale to boot. Have a wonderful Christmas!

A Cinder Sword for a kingdom in cinders, and enough gold for either the best armor available or an improved blacksmithy for the troops. Gonna have to ponder on that one.

Thanks for the run Medivh, looking forward to your return and what you have in store next already, but happy holidays 'til then!

I suppose I could ask though, going into it, did you expect Alric to win the tourney? And has there been any noticeable part where our decision making surprised you in some way?
>>

Good Thread.
Have to repay jaina as soon as possible not like we got an excuse not to.
how much wealth did jaina give for those clothes? i dont think it was ever specified.
>>
>>5093852
Very nice, thanks for the thread

Honestly the only thing I was thinking ia for future military units. Mostly because Alterac has mountains so cavalry isn t the best there. And there are also forests. So we need to adapt.

>>5093850
Damn nice money and sword.
>>
>>5093850
Do we all agree to spend our prize money on the Masterwork Armour? We now have a magic sword and need good armour to go with it.

Of course, we first have to pay our debt to Jaina.
>>
>>5093886
If there's anything that comes to mind for possible military development, I'd personally look to Alterac's closest geographical equivalent irl Switzerland, which has been historically notable for it's pikemen and early adoption of it.
I think a mixed army of primarily Pikemen (anti-cav and defensive) and Crossbowmen (anti-armour) with a small amount of Mounted Seargents (light cav for harassment/anti-light) is probably the way to go, with a handful of royal guards (knights/mounted men-at-arms).
That is, unless we want to keep it more fantasy-esque and stick to Alteraci Footman Drill traditions as well.

Actually, that makes me wonder. Are all our Footmen trained in that fighting style, or is it more something used by more 'elite' troops?
>>
>>5093868
The first two rounds yes, but last two the kiddy gloves were off. I did some rolling in the background for rest of the fights and who meets who and Ballador became your opponent who just had dueled a "small eternity with Gryan Stoutmantle". Even as a paladin he was somewhat tired and the you drank the Blessed Vial. The DC would have been way higher otherwise. All other characters named could have faced you too. Finally the last DC of the Arthas fight was 14, even with the 1d6 best three of four that is a tough DC to beat.

And yes sometimes. I can say that the Hillsbrad story could have ended quite differently.

>>5093879
The clothing costed more than you had, but less than 1 Wealth. You can now easily pay Jaina back or let her keep the favour.

>>5093930
Yes, it is after all named Alterac Footman Drill and not Alterac Knight Drill. You just had a quite good teacher training you in it.
>>
>>5093930
That sounds like a good idea i think we should keep a core of swordsmen and archers though.
More than for tradition, certain enemies will be fast and go for flanking us, or attempt to enter in close melee. Others could just skirmish with us.
Swordsmen for : offensive, shield walls, flanking, protect other units in close melee and siege assaults.
Archers: transform them fully in rangers under Bill Rover. Making them very good scouts and skirmishers
>>
>>5093941
How hard would it be to pump out mass crossbow men milita and spearmen?

I'd like to wall off all our settlements and man the walls with Crossbowmen, assumnig it would be cheaper and easier to train and fit everyone with crossbows.
>>
>>5095235
From a wealth perspective, we would have little issues pumping out a ton of crossbowmen with green veterancy. The problem lies in their supply consumption, or rather our limited supply production. We're already going at a net loss of supply which we'll need to fix if we want to train more troops. This is why I personally think we should have a look at upgrading our blacksmith, since it's cheaper to maintain a quality army over a quantity one.
>>
>>5095235
Militia are basically the last line of defence and not professionals at all. With them being free to draft with barracks/town hall, allowing crossbow militia feels bit too strong to be allowed. What you described already somewhat exist with Guard Tower upgrade. Sure somewhat expensive, but supply free solution to defend your holdings.

So if you want massed crossbowmen, you require barracks to be built first, wealth and free peasants to recruit them and then have supplies for the upkeep at start of the next season.

I will update all pastebins before next thread is up, but current balance is following. The moment troops return from Durnholde, you have to pay their upkeep and you go to -1 supplies per season.

Total Resources:
10 Wealth, +16 per season
16 Supplies, +1 per season
80 Peasants
>>
For those still following this thread, I will be back on PC on 9th of January latest. Then updating the pastebins and making a new thread. Will give you an update closer we get to that on Twitter and in this thread if this is still up.
