Oohhh... What happened?

You find yourself waking up in a very unusual and uncomfortable place. You're on the floor, not in your bed. The tile floor is grodey and coated with a layer of dust and dirt. You feel strangely delirious, like you just woke up from a dream, but that would be your memories of last night. You don't remember doing anything unusual, and now you are here. Feels strange that waking up from a "dream" feels like your real life was a dream.

You're in a silent place with heavy air. Nearby you are a few objects- including several totally white cans of something and a large metal hook. It is only now you feel quite thirsty and uneasy being in this place.

What should you do now?

You reach over, not quite trusting yourself to stand up yet, to grab the hook. Pulling it into your lap, you examine it closer.

It's... a big damn meat hook. Made of steel or something, sharp point, and it's really heavy. You feel a bit of childish glee just from having this thing, like it's some badass ultimate weapon, though in reality you have no idea why it is here.

Strangely you feel a little more comfortable with it around, though you feel like you should be worried whoever just left this next to your sleeping body... How did you end up here anyway? Did you get drugged or something? Or is this a dream still?

The hook feels real at least, real and hefty. It will do as a way to defend yourself for now, should you have been secretly drugged to a serial killer's hunting ground or something. Weirdly, despite obviously never owning a big ass meat hook, you feel like this item is "yours" somehow. It's hard to explain.

You stand up with the hook, practicing with its weight and heft. You make a few practice swings, then spin around pretending you're battling invisible ninjas or something.

Oh yeah! This is awesome!

As you spin however, one of your rotations something suddenly catches your eye. You stop spinning and look- no that wasn't your eyes playing tricks on you- something is there. For a split second, you're mortified, thinking someone just say you prance around and embarrass yourself, but NOW you realize that it isn't a... person.

It's roughly human shaped, but looks like its made of meat. It's standing there, watching you, though you don't think it has eyes. Just standing there... this is giving you the creeps. The fact it is dead silent is the part that is freaking you out. It's not moving or breathing or anything, just ominously standing. Is it... waiting for you? Is it a monster? You clutch your hook closely, as it is your only defense.

Getting the distinct feeling that whatever this thing is, it's not human and it certainly isn't friendly. You cautiously advance with your hook ready. As soon as you cross a certain threshold of distance, or as soon as you make an amount of noise, the creature charges at you.

It doesn't move especially fast, and its motions are clumsy and twitchy. You prepare your hook for a strike, but hesitate a moment before you swing because of the light. The creature suddenly begins to emit an unholy purplish light that makes you feel sick just to see it. You feel an incredible unease. The creature is totally silent and, as you first saw at a distance, has no mouth or eyes at all- but the light it produces creates an ungodly ringing noise, an evil hiss of boiling air.

It's gotten too close- you have to move now.

The hook finds its mark easily- the point of the sharp tool lodging in the head of the monster. Within a second, the light dies away and it goes limp. Strangely watery blood spurts out from the impact, though you don't think there is a brain or cavity inside for your hook to really be puncturing.

Whatever it was, it stops moving. This creature was very weak compared to your young, strong human body- but it's a good thing you had this hook. At any rate, you have no idea if there are more of them out there.

You take the creature out into the light of the foyer, using your hook to accomplish the task. You decide to avoid touching the thing's body as much as possible, in case this is an infectious zombie-outbreak thing you stumbled into...

Out here, you can see it more clearly. It is shaped like a human, made of some kind of fleshy material. It's clearly a living creature, not a robot or puppet, but doesn't seem logical in how it works. It has no eyes or mouth, no bodily openings at all- and you don't dare to see if it has a butthole. It has no internal organs as far as you can tell, and blood seeps from its wounds only for a few moments after being inflicted; then stopping. Interestingly, the thing's flesh is weak and more pliable then your own body; plunging your hook into its head felt like stabbing into a head of lettuce instead. It's movements and muscles were also weak too. Whatever was or could create that light seems to be gone. Giving the body more pokes with your hooks and kicks with your foot, it doesn't move at all.

You get a strange feeling that tells you that there could be more creatures like this, some of them stronger or more aggressive then this one. You also get a sensation that this creature isn't actually dead yet- it creeps you out to feel that this unmoving, unbreathing thing is still "alive" in some way- pounding on it with the hook some more probably won't change that. You very well could not be in the real world; maybe you died and you're in some kind of strange purgatory... or maybe this is hell and one day you'll end up like this flesh monster thing.

You take your hook and advance towards that dark room. Going past the constructions of cardboard(?) You feel penned in and a little worried about what could be hiding in here. After a few minutes though you finally come to a spot on the wall with an open door.

The air feels damp and the smell is that of water. There is a small light. For some reason, you feel as though whatever is in the next room is... comfortable. Friendly even, though not necessarily "safe". Nothing here feels safe.

As you enter the next room you find yourself on a platform above a interior watery space; but find yourself frozen as you examine the scene.

Three otherworldly entities, cast in white, levitate over the water here. The light in the room shifts as it focuses on you. You don't know why, but you get a distinct feeling of being watched by these three. One seems to "exist" towards you and within a second, it speaks into your mind, as though it just read your thoughts and instantly learned your language.

"Ahh- you are the new Hookman. This is good. You have seen no portals yet, Hookman, but we feel you will know what to do when you do, Hookman."

The second figure, with a geometric shape hiding its face jiggles at you a bit.

"Hah- this Hookman has already taken to brutalizing residents! That's fun, and we like to see it, but that's not your true purpose here, Hookman."

"Who are you, then?"

"We? We be your bosses, Hookman. We are the curators and controllers of this place, though we have no power outside of it- that is where you come in."

"What- IS this place? Where am I?"

"This is the space between spaces, Hookman. The unborn and unknowning place. We are before the veil of ignorance. Those unfit and unformed may not be allowed into any living world; which is your job here. The residents of this place must not be allowed to leave it- though some have become tricky. They try to leave through portals, and you must bring them back. Their home is here. As is your home now."

Your... home now? You don't want to live in a place like this! If this truly is another world, or another "dimension" or "space between spaces" or whatever nonsense, then you want to go back home! I mean your old life wasn't amazing or anything, but still it would beat this creepy place...

"I'm getting thirsty. Can I drink the water? Is it safe?"

"The water?" The being shivers, almost in confusion. "You were already given refreshement, Hookman! If refreshment is what you seek, seek our white cans and bottles- the containers of your new life-essence. The water here is at best an illusion; it is spirit water, the water that binds and controls this place. The residents are more receptive of it then you; and you would do well to avoid anything the residents like."

You decide to leave these creepy beings. One of them motions you to a bottle left behind, and then when you pass back out of the door, you are gone and return to where you were.

You march to where your cans were left in the strange foyer. The cans are all white, and inside is some kind of liquid. With a bit of hesitation, you open a can and sniff it. The air inside smells fresh and clean at least, but you don't detect any kind of flavor. You're so thisty now you kind of don't care-

Taking a swig, the white liquid smoothly pours in your mouth and down your throat. It refreshes you absolutely- you feel a sudden relief all down your throat and in your belly, and spreading through your whole body. You no longer feel hunger or thirst, your desire for sex is sated, tiredness dissolves as though you just slept- any and all aches and muscle strain from your travels and fight with the resident earlier (whose body is missing, as you've noticed) are relieved with each long sip of that angelic fluid.

However, as nice as that pick me up was, you don't want to stay here forever right now. Instead, you need to start finding a way to escape...

As you walk through the halls with your trusty hook, you begin to think back on what happened. How you got here.

You've already accepted that this isn't a dream, and there is more to the world then the world you came from. You are in some kind of alternate dimension for sure, though if this really is a "space between spaces" like those angel-things said, you aren't sure. What you do know is that this place has weird monsters, and those weird monsters and those angel-things have weird powers you don't have. That doesn't sit right with you- shouldn't you have weird powers like them too?

You already remember how you got here- you were experiencing a small ego-death when considering the wholeness of the world one time on a trip. Just not thinking about yourself, and about the world at large. One of those experiences that everyone has- where one has to bring themselves down and back to themselves like they forget who they are. You remember that moment, because you didn't bring yourself back to who you are. You appeared here.

Meanwhile; you come across a portal in a section of the strange place. You see a black hole of darkness surrounded by some weird energy. The fact you can't see what's inside scares you-- could this be a portal to an endless empty void of nothing? Or is this a portal to another world?

You decide to test the portal out first, using your hook. As you poke inside the portal with your hook, you're surprised at how... organic it feels, and that your hook interacts strongly with it. Other then that, it seems like a standard portal, though you can't see anything through it, entering through this magical doorway would let you pass into another world. The end of the hook, and later your finger, are not harmed by passing into the portal.

Still, you decide to wait a bit.

As you stand behind a corner and watch the rest of the room, you get a distinct feeling of having just missed whatever went through that portal. You're pretty sure whatever made that portal did so and passed through it from here into wherever else; and nothing is coming. After waiting for what feels like an hour, you feel it is time to enter the otherworldly portal.

As you pass through the portal, you come to for a second and realize where you are. You're in some kind of alternate world, not where you come from, but a medieval fantasy world! Oh wow! You love this.

You see villagers selling goods in some kind of town. The air smells fresh and free of pollution, and the people are all busy talking to each other to notice you. But then again, you feel as though they're almost ignoring you, like your otherworldly nature is bending their attention away. Probably for the better, since how much you'd stick out like a sore thumb here.

But the worst part is none of them seem to be reacting to the whimpering sounds you hear nearby; it sounds like a woman, hurt, and afraid. Can none of them really hear that?

You realize pretty soon that you have some kind of extraordinary sense. You can "sense" the presence of something nearby, and you can hear a whimpering woman too- none of these mundane beings in their world seem to have the same ability. It seems like whatever you drank in that white can has given you a bit of supernatural power. You get the distinct feeling that the more you drink, the more your power will grow.

But in the meantime, your present situation poses a difficult choice. You're worried if you get caught by these people, you might be imprisoned or worse killed for being some kind of weird dimensional traveller- will they burn you like a witch or something? But you want to investigate that noise...

You sneak off towards the sounds of the whimpering- you cross by a back alley behind a busy market square. You see a lot of people here- dressed in medieval clothes and selling hand crafted goods and freshly grown food. You see an elderly man in a robe like a magician being escorted by a religious knight- perhaps a paladin of this world?

The thing that still eats at you is the constant sensation of worms trying to wriggle under your skin in the direction of that whimpering- like you have business there. And even moreso, nobody else seems to hear or feel it. You end up sneaking into a large castle, its gates open and unguarded for the festival.

Finally, you see the source of the noise.

It's a woman, trapped in one of these castle's back gardens, whimpering and begging for help as one of those "residents" does... something to her. With the pain she is in and the way that spectral light is glowing on her, you assume that the creature is killing her, and has somehow taken away her ability to speak above a whisper. It makes your skin crawl.

You can't just stand here- you have to stop this. But how should you do it? You know the creature hasn't spotted you yet, but you get the feeling this being is stronger then the last one you faced- but at the same time, you still feel empowered by that strange white liquid you drank. You feel a closer connection to your hook then ever.

You slam the monster hard against the ground with your hook, using your leverage to smash its skull as hard as you can down into the cobblestone path of the garden.

SPLAT

And yet, even as the monster's light fades, you know that it isn't truly dead. Even in this more grounded dimension, these "residents" are unkillable. They reek havoc and can only be stopped by force. You put both hands on your hook, still securely embedded into the resident's head, and then begin to pull.

You pull the monster out of the castle, leaving a trail of blood. As you go, you're driven by some kind of instinct. You realize now, this is what purpose those angel beings were talking about. That's what a Hookman is. As you pull the body past a crowd of shocked onlookers, none of whom make any attempt to stop you, you think you understand everything now.

You ended up in the other world, or the "space between spaces". You don't think you were chosen, but you were "lost" there, and now, you've become lost from your original dimension. The Hookman is a role or special "job" that does exactly this- find portals that residents open to other worlds, and bring them back. Since they can't be truly killed, these beings must be retrieved and endlessly brutalized by the Hookman... by you.

You toss the mosnter's body easily back through the portal- sending it back where it belongs. That's what the purpose of your hook is for. That's the purpose that the angels wanted you to fulfill.

From testing your hook on the portal earlier, you know you can close the portals between worlds. You had the urge to close this portal ever since you got here, but now you understand better.

If you go back through the portal, you'll remain the Hookman. Maybe you could find another portal like this one, maybe even eventually your original world. You'll be doing a violent, dangerous job- but at the same time, something rewarding and special. Something that gives your life meaning and purpose- plus these supernatural powers the angels granted you- your enhanced senses and sense of physical strength. It makes you feel like a super hero.

But at the same time... maybe you could close the portal on this side. Stay in this dimension. It isn't the same as home, but you won't be a Hookman anymore, you won't be serving those angelic beings. You'll be free to live your life here however you wish.

Perhaps some day you will find a better world to stay in, you figure. You decide to enter the portal back to the otherworld, and close it from that side- giving the resident you captured a quick bash on the skull for your trouble.

You have decided to become The Hookman. While you never intended to stay that way for long, things just go that way. As time goes on, your power grows and you accept your role more and more. While you are utterly alone, you spend your time and energy fighting those monsters, bringing them back from the strange and exciting worlds they invade. Many of these worlds are abstract realms with only a single building or object and endless blankness around, others are dying places where the residents have seemingly already slipped to. Regardless, you keep bringing them back as the thought of finding a new world to live in becomes less and less important.

You are sustained by that white drink the angels gave you. You are powered by your anger- and you enjoy taking out your frustration on the residents, who only seem more and more pathetic the more and more you defeat them.

...While finding a new world becomes less and less important to you as your job takes up more and more of your thoughts, you do begin to crave a place of your own. The angel beings seem to oblige you- opening you up to a place within the realm-between-realms.

Here, you collect lost things. While the other realm is mostly barren, occassionally lost things, like yourself, end up here. Furniture, clothes, eventually even a pet cat. You begin to collect these in your home within the otherworld. You're isolated and alone, with no other person to ever speak to, but you feel more and more that you don't need anyone else. You are the Hookman, and your mission sustains you in a way that other people can't.
