They tell stories of steel in every land Men live. Tales of knights and heroes, of brave adventurers and wise kings. Those are the tales sung by bards and minstrels. But the stories you hear are different. Tales of gold to be had. Of opportunities the next Kingdom over. Of contracts sealed with blood. For you are a sellsword.

The Realm of Gothyka has been embroiled in war for two centuries, and it shows no signs of dying down. For Centuries, the High King’s power has been a hollow shell and his vassals and lords have fought amongst each other to swell the borders and influence of their own petty kingdoms. A splintered realm, outside powers peer in, from Urbs Consecratus in the South to the rising Iron Kingdom in the North, while the High King desperately musters what remaining power he can to enforce any cohesion in his realm at all … before it inevitably ebbs away. And dark eyes peer from the Wildlands to the East. Tribes of wild men, savage in their ways, and tribes of feral beastmen, savager still.

It is a fine time to be a sellsword as the balance of power shifts wildly and battles are fought both on the field and in the dark. Whenever battles are had at night, whenever armor is best cloaked instead of polished. Whenever there is a story of steel where there is little honor to be had, your kind offers its services.

But that isn’t to say you all are honorless bastards. You, at least, have a personal code …

>The Code of Chivalry. You doubt that people will sing songs about your exploits, but that does not stop you from following the code you were raised to believe in. (Dispossessed Knight Background)

>The Contract. You’re a professional to the bones. What your employer commands you to do, you do without question. And you’d sooner die than break a contract. (Career Mercenary Background)

>The Iron Way. A man should not possess anything he did not seize in conquest (Reaver background)

>Futuwwa. Even when forced to fight for heathens, you adhere to the teachings of the Prophet. (Ghazi Background)

>Bushido. Pay is secondary as long as it allows you to continue to further cultivate yourself. (Eastern Wanderer Background)

>The code of the common man. You know little about codes of chivalry and wartime ethics. All you know is that you haven’t turned heartless … yet. (Common Man background, +1 free trade)

The Common Man’s Code:
Pious, yet not as pious as a knight. Honorable, yet not as oathbound as their Lords. Although they would have heard of chivalry in stories, the average folk of Gothyka could barely name four of the seven holy virtues of Knighthood, or define the tenets of the codes of honor that the High Lords that rule over them. Yet, the unnamed and unspoken code shared by tenant farmers and freeholders, by the artisans and craftsmen of the towns and cities, is by far the most adhered-to code of right and wrong there is in the Realm. This so-called code arises from the norms and values shared by those who must toil to eat. It is enforced only in the bad reputation one gains from being considered ‘A proper bastard’. Honesty, humility, charity. The value of a day’s work. The character of a good man, enforced from a young age, is simple. Yet properly taught, such values can last anyone with their head screwed on straight a lifetime.

Yet in hard times, one’s trade can’t always be enough to earn a living. In such time, village orphans, bastards, second sons. Such individuals might need to leave their tight-knit communities to seek their fortunes abroad. Sometimes, that place is found as a farmhand in someone else’s wheat field. And sometimes, that place is the field of battle.

But all honest men have a trade they know. What were you before your trade became the sword?

>A Farmer. You exchanged your plowshare for a sword.

>A Shepherd. You grazed your herd on the edge of the wild.

>A Blacksmith. Barely competent at hammering out horseshoes, but it was a living.

>Another? (An option always encouraged unless stated otherwise)

Chapter 0: We Don’t Tolerate Your Kind Here.

“Sellsword, huh? We don’t tolerate your kind on Lord Grenzheim’s land. You lot are barely better than bandits”

That had been what your Gaoler had told you before locking you in the Smallkeep’s cell. You had been looking for a place to stay in the neighbouring village, but all you had gotten was the local militia. They had promptly led you at spearpoint to where you were sitting now. Apparently, this little fiefdom didn’t appreciate outsiders. Or at least armed ones.

The Gaoler had assured you that the smallkeep’s resident knight would attend you the next morning. Since then, it had been a week. In that time, you had been fed and watered three times.

So much for the next morning. You grimly thought to yourself as you watched the sun set yet again from the narrow arrow slit that was your only window outside the Smallkeep’s walls. You know what they were trying to do. They were trying to break you, to strip you of all resistance before they interrogated you. But no matter what, you’d still have …

Pick One

>Your Strength. Even in the midst of famine. you’ve always been stronger than others.

>Your Agility. You’ve been fleet-footed since childhood, able to outrun most problems.

>Your Dexterity. Your trade has given you clever hands.

Since we can't help but be tie-locked and I'd like to update for you guys today, I'll go from the post that tied the two most popular options, disregard the last votes for them, and select the option that was originally winning before being tied again. In the event of another long tie even after the options are narrowed down to the two most popular, this is the procedure I'll go with.

In this case, the option that was initially winning until we were tied is butcher so that is the option we will go with.

However, if this system proves unpopular, I won't implement it. So please speak up if you don't.

You would still have your endurance. You were a tough one, and this cell was far from the worst conditions you had had to put up with. You had a roof over your head. And while three meals in seven days had made you ravenous, it was far from as bad as it had been the winter before you had left your home village.

You massaged the jagged scar that ran from the knuckle of your left thumb across your palm to your wrist. When you had been first learning your trade as a butcher, you had made many mistakes. The scar on your thumb was merely the most permanent of them. Your other souvenirs of that kind had a knack for fading. As had the ones you accumulated as a sellsword.

You grimaced as you gently rubbed the split flesh. Miraculously, your thumb had remained functional after the wound had healed. Still, it had a habit of aching when you were left in the dark with your thoughts. A dull, hot pain that you had long grown used to.

The past two days, there had been more of a commotion outside your cell than usual. From what you could gather, the number of people staying in the Smallkeep had increased substantially. And from the words that you overheard, their accent wasn’t local either. And then on the night of the eighth day, your Gaoler reappeared.

“Figured even the scum collecting in our dungeon should share in the festivities.” He had drunkenly sneered upon stepping into the torchlight outside of your cell. “Lord Grenzheim’s secured the services of a ‘famous’ company of mercenaries. The illustrious Black Hounds. And we’re to host them tonight.”

You stared up at the Gaoler. He sounded to be in a bad temper. He was a truly repulsive-looking man, with a figure like that of an onion and a pudgy, pimpled face. Somehow, sweat stains had appeared under his armpits where it had soaked through his gambeson. An arming sword hung at his belt. Still, that had been the most someone had spoken to you since you were imprisoned.

“When will I stand trial?” You croak from your parched lips.

The Gaoler laughed. “Stand trial, eh? Let’s see now, I said that you were to be judged tomorrow … six days ago? Well it slipped my mind to tell you that the master of this tower left on a hunt the morning after you arrived … and won’t be back for another week more! Har har! And ah yes, your festivities ...”

The Gaoler roughly jammed a loaf of bread and a heavy jug of black beer through the cell’s bars, where they spilled onto the dank floor, before walking away. You made sure that he had closed the door to the guard room before you collected your meal off the ground.

As you greedily tore the loaf of bread apart and washed it down with the porridge-like black beer, you weighed your options. Until now, you had been content to wait for a judgement, not willing to risk an escape attempt. But two weeks was too long to spend in this damp hole. It was time you thought about escaping.

All these options are auto-successes. This is further character building.

Two weeks was too long to spend in a dungeon cell like this. And seeing how they had treated you so far, you weren’t sure you could bet on the fairness of any trial that awaited you. You’d be better off escaping at this point.

Ever since you had gotten here, you had been staring at the bars of your cell and wondering if it would be possible to push yourself through. Smallkeeps were usually built by the peasantry living on the land, and their construction could be shoddy. In your cell’s case, the bars were unevenly spaced, and a bit too far apart from each other. It would be unpleasant, but you decided to try it. First, you strip out of your aketon. They hadn’t bothered searching you upon arresting you, only confiscating your sword and rucksack before tossing you into your cell. Had you been keeping a hidden dagger or lockpick under it, no one would have been the wiser. But you hadn’t, only a cached purse of silver. Perhaps a thought for the future …

You start by passing a hand through the bars of your cell, then fitting your shoulder in between them. Now your skin is in contact with the metal. The iron bars felt cool and slick. It is a damp time of year and condensation was thick on every surface.

Bracing one foot against the floor, you begin to push yourself through. First, your head, then your shoulder. You feel a crushing, squeezing pressure in your chest as you force yourself further and further. In response, you grab two iron bars and pull in tandem with your pushing. Gritting your teeth, you force the widest part of your chest through the gap, leaving a considerable flap of skin behind. But you were out.

You were breathless and your entire chest felt like a piece of freshly scraped rawhide. But the urgency of moving before you were discovered gave you enough energy to keep moving. Trying to keep as quiet as possible, you slipped your aketon through the bars of your cell and donned it again.

At the far end of the line of cells was a guardroom. Trying to keep as quiet as possible, you slowly crept up to the door to it and peered through the keyhole. It was occupied by a lone guard. A drunk and asleep one.

You wouldn’t call yourself terribly professional, but this was sloppy even by your standards.

Rolls
Rolls correspond to one of your character’s stats or skills and are decided by 3 rolls of 1d100. In a high-difficulty roll, the highest roll is taken. In a low-difficulty roll, the lowest roll is taken. Vice versa for a medium roll.
If a roll is lower than your character’s stat, it is successful. If a roll is higher than your character’s stat, it fails. Items are important for situationally increasing the values of these stats. This is not a game for playing naked.

Currently our character’s stats are:

Strength - 10
Agility - 10
Dexterity - 10
Toughness - 20
Intelligence - 10
Perception - 10
Charisma - 10
Willpower - 20

Criticals
A critical is either a 1 or a 100, respectively a critical success and failure. Criticals take precedence over other rolls. They are treated as an auto success/failure.

Fate Points
Fate points are points that can be used to either re-roll or auto-succeed a roll. Spend a fate point to reroll and burn one to auto-succeed. Your character has a number of fate points that regenerate once every chapter. However, burning a fate point gets rid of it permanently.

Critical successes can be saved to regenerate one fate point. However, to earn new fate points, accomplish acts that adhere to your code even in times where that code is tested. But the more fate points you earn, the harder it will be to earn them.

Be warned that fate points cannot be used to accomplish the impossible. So far, your character has 3 Fate Points.

================================================================================

>You followed your code and left the guard be. In doing so, you progressed 1/1 towards a fate point. Be warned that the life of a sellsword can be unforgiving to the soft.

+1 Fate Point

You think about quietly sneaking over to the guard, quietly drawing their sheathed dagger, and slitting their throat. But you shake your head. You were already awaiting trial, the worst thing you could do was commit a crime you couldn’t deny. But maybe that was just an excuse and you simply didn’t want to kill the man.

You do your best to open the door without making the sound. You’re more or less successful. You quietly begin to creep to the door on the other side of the guardsroom. Your first step into the room sounds almost deafening to your ears and you are astonished that you do not wake the guard. Two more cautious steps. You’re more than halfway now. You struggle to muffle every footfall. The Guard still doesn’t stir from his drunken stupor. Six steps, seven steps. You’re an arm’s length away from the door to the guardsroom. And then, the Guard mumbles and starts to wake ...

>Rush him before he wakes up (Combat: Grappling Range + Start with Initiative)

IN fairness, we are right now literally an ambitious peasant with atrocious stats, and so logically would struggle with a lot of normal ‘adventurer’ things- a drunk guard would be little match for an experienced raider, but in turn would have little to fear from an unarmed peasant.

Once we actually acquire training and equipment and experience, we’ll get peasant joe somewhat competent.

Honestly? I doubt our ability to make it that far as just an upjumped peasant with delusions of common decency. I'm stuck between the desire to autisticly role play our character on hardcore mode, and just restarting as something more interesting and suited to this type of gameplay.

Our best case scenario is barely better than a coin flip and our worst case scenario is a 1-in-a-1000 hail mary. As it stands, we are basically hoping for crits. I don't see this as particularily winnable but what the hell. Let's start.
>>
Also, do degrees of success play a role here?
>>
>>5020438
Considering how low our skills are? I suspect we'd be lucky to get a success, let alone degrees here.

Combat

-- Rolls --
In combat, instead of successes being determined by rolling under your stats, it is determined by if your roll is closer to being under your stat than your opponent’s roll to theirs. If your roll is under your stat, you land a successful wound on your opponent. If both of you roll under, the one who rolls under by more’s action succeeds.

--Initiative--
The central mechanic of fighting is initiative, which controls whether you are attacking or defending. At the beginning of the combat, you and your opponent(s) roll dexterity and the victor gains initiative for the beginning of the fight. However, initiative can be lost.

If initiative is not gained or lost in the round, it will be reassigned with an agility check.

-- Turns and Wounds --
If the attacker succeeds in their roll, they damage part of their opponent’s toughness. Once toughness reaches below 10, the defender must succeed on an independent willpower check to continue fighting. If toughness falls below 0, the defender receives a critical wound where a potentially disfiguring or lethal injury is selected from a wound chart. Alternatively, a dice roll of 1 results in giving a critical wound while a 100 results in receiving one.

If an attack is landed while defenseless, you receive a wound that reduces your toughness by 10 until the wound is healed. Strength Actions reduce your toughness by 20. Landing a blow on a defenseless opponent cedes the initiative to the opponent next round.

1/3
>>
-- Actions --
In combat, every turn you have four possible actions to take tied to your four physical stats. Every action plays itself out differently depending on whether or not you have the initiative.

Strength Action - A heavy blow that does twice the toughness damage. All strength actions are full actions.
- With initiative, it gives the initiative to the opponent the next turn
- Without initiative, it is a desperate attack that leaves you defenseless next turn
Agility Action
- With initiative, it is a half-action outmaneuvering of the opponent that either lets you control your range or opens their defenses for the rest of the turn.
- Without initiative, it is a full-action desperate dodge
Dexterity Action
- With initiative, it is a half-action skillful blow that opens up combos
- Without initiative, it is a half-action parry that negates an enemy attack
Toughness Action
- With initiative, it’s a regenerative full-action that recovers toughness
- Without initiative, it is a full-action that tanks an opponent’s blow in return for seizing initiative the next round.

Defenselessness is a state where you cannot take actions. This also serves as a window for the other person to complete an objective outside of the fight, such as grabbing or throwing an object or running away.

If you have a half-action left, you can move in and out of range of an opponent, use any abilities you have or roll intelligence, perception, charisma, or willpower.
Intelligence - Gain a small buff to actions until parried or rendered defenseless
Perception - If on the defensive, gain a large buff on the current and next turn
Charisma - If on the offensive or your opponent is below 10 Toughness, taunt your opponent, reducing their willpower. If willpower drops below 0, they can no longer fight.
Willpower - Regain a small amount of willpower.
>>
-- Gear --
Weapons buff different stats, have different weight classes, and different grades of quality. They can also have attributes and abilities.

A weapon can only be defended against by a weapon of the same weight class or higher, or parried by a weapon of the same weight class, or one weight class lower with an underroll, or two weight classes lower with a critical. Otherwise, debuffs for the turn are inflicted ranging all the way to an automatic critical wound.

Weapons also have optimal ranges and suffer debuffs when outside of those optimal ranges.

The other major piece of gear is Armor which provides a flat damage reduction.

To take our Main Character’s gear for example.

Weapon: Unarmed
Damage: 1d5
Weight: Light
Quality: Shoddy (-3 debuff)
Range: Grappling/Knife
- Unable to kill opponent
- Defending against a weapon above light class or sharp, take 1d3 damage for every weight class.

Armor: Aketon
Armor Points: 10
Weight: Light
Quality: Common
Attributes
Textile Armor - Piercing and Heavy weapons will ignore it’s AP
Warm - +3 buff against cold damage, -3 debuff against heat damage

================================================================================

You ball up your fists, ready to fight regardless of if you can win or not. Unarmed, you stand little chance against a man armed with a sword. But you inwardly breathe out a sigh of relief when you see the man was not reaching for his sword, but rather a cudgel tucked into his belt. Of course. You were a prisoner awaiting trial and he had backup on the way. Butchering you easily would have been overkill on the guard’s part.

If you could close in on him, too close for him to use his cudgel, that would put the two of you on even footing.

……
………

When you come to, you’re back in the same cell as you were before, lying in the exact same bed of straw. But this time, one leg is manacled to the wall. And you’ve got a ringing headache. A guard has been posted permanently outside your cell. You see it’s the same one that had knocked you unconscious and foiled your escape attempt. He gazes at you warily, as if expecting you to burst your manacles and attempt to escape like before. Your Gaoler visits you again later that day. He gloats and mocks you for being stupid enough to attempt to escape. Then he kicks over your shit bucket. You’re left to stew for the rest of the day.

But late at night, you get a visitor.

You’re awoken by a scabbard prodding persistently at your ribs. A tall man in dark, padded leather armor is standing outside of your cell. Meanwhile, the guard outside your cell is slumped against the wall, asleep.

“Well my friend, it seems you’ve caused quite the trouble.” He says, before passing you a skin of some liquid. “Here. For the headache, no doubt.”

He seems to notice you staring at the ‘asleep’ guard. “Ah, don’t worry about him. Sleeping dart, so we could have some privacy. But that one has a habit of napping on duty anyways.”

You take a cautious sip, before finding inside the aromatic taste of spiced wine. As you sate your greedy thirst, you can feel your headache receding. You hand the skin of wine back to the stranger outside your cell half-empty.

“What do you want?” You growl. In return for his generosity, you’d at least talk to him.

The Man smirks. “I heard how you escaped your cell from a friend of mine. A mutual friend, no doubt? But he neglected how you did so. Well, tell me how you slipped out and I might tell you about an offer to get out of your current situation.”

“And that offer being?”

“Well, we can always use slippery bastards like you in the ranks of the Black Dogs. Besides, can’t be worse than your current accommodations.” He glances at the low ceiling of your dungeon cell, barely high enough to stand in. “So, what say you, friend? I don’t have all night ...”

“Depends.” You reply, “What do I stand to earn from this?”

“Other than your head?” The Man laughs, “Whatever you can earn on the battlefield. Whether it be loot, silver, or women! And that includes both the battle and the sacking. There’s nothing like being the gods and masters of a small city. But besides that, you’re paid seasonally out of your Commander’s share of the commission. Take me for instance. I never pay my men in anything but silver. Other than that, duties can be accepted by a unit with a price attached to them. First to scale the wall? Take the castle gatehouse? Crawl through the sewers? That’s three month’s pay in silver straight from the Company Treasury, maybe even gold.”

You nod. It sounded much more organized than the ad hoc bands of sellswords you had fought with until now. Much more like an independent army than a band of brigands hired by a local lord. “Are we responsible for our own supplies?”

“We provide a bedroll and rations to everyone, as well as other supplies like arrows and whetstones for a cut of your monthly pay. And once you become a blooded member, the Company takes responsibility itself for keeping you in fighting shape. You might have to go with some hardship if you accept some dicier Duties, but no one starves or goes without shelter in camp.”

“Sounds awfully generous.” You say, “How do the Black Hounds keep afloat if they give out so much for free?”

“Because we’re the best of the best.” The Man proudly boasts, “We’re a long-established company, hailing back to the founding of Gothyka. The Kings and High Lords know what they pay for. You might be soft now, but spend a season with us and we’ll tan you like a piece of rawhide. But enough copper counting, let’s leave that to the quartermasters. Gold and silver is nothing compared to adventure, and the Black Hounds may all be rogues, but we’re a closer band of brothers than you’ll ever find. So, what say you?”

Actually, it's quite intuitive. I expect mid-late quest to be decent, even if I expect us to fail all the hard rolls even if we're an uber-veteran. The short game's gonna be nothing but misery though, since retards chose an up-jumped peasant to start with instead of somebody with actual combat experience. I don't think we'll make it past the first battle at this rate, and trying to be a decent person will just fuck with our sellsword career.

I like it, as long as the difficulty scales reasonably for different checks (ie. no. Basically coin flips for basic things like climbing a hill or something).
Regarding combat, it seems fair enough, since we’re a peasant, and so, we then logically suck. The main things I’d want is for the system to be recorded for reference, and maybe for NPCs to use the same three-roll system we do, so they don’t have strangely varying results compared to us.

You sigh. “Looks like the Gods have it that I can’t say anything but yes.”

“You’ve gained a new brother today.” The Man reassures you, clasping your arm and pulling you to your feet. “Name’s Hadhan.”

“One more thing before I accept for sure though.” You say, “Think you can get my gear back? Because I’m naked otherwise.”

“Done!” Hadhan roars, “Come tomorrow morn you’ll be fed and watered in the main hall, alongside your Brothers of the Black Hounds …”

You were awoken in the morning by the Gaoler’s angry yelling. But it wasn’t at you.

“Where in damnation were you last night?” He roars at the guard. “Damn fucking Sellswords having a conversation in the night, and you didn’t think to tell me?”

“I-I’m sorry Gunth! I don’t know what to say, I fell asleep …”

“Don’t know what to say?”

You listen to the Gaoler swear at the hapless Guard for a good long while. You feel almost guilty, knowing that the Guard was not at fault. But eventually, the Gaoler turns his attention to you.

“You slimy, slippery bastard. I don’t know what trickery you caused, but the Black Hounds have taken it into their heads to recruit you and I’m to set you free and arm you. But mark my words, if it were up to me, you would be left to rot here. The world’s better off without your kind, much less with your kind wandering around, armed.” The Gaoler does not speak another word to you, unlocking your cell and unchaining you from the wall.

You smile. It seems Hadhan kept his promise.

“Please follow me. I’m to show you about.” Your former Guard tells you. He stares at you sullenly, but you don’t see a grudge in his eyes …

A Smallkeep was almost always a small affair, built by villagers for protection when the land of Gothyka had been less tame. A round wall surrounding a small courtyard with several lean-to buildings leaning against the wall as well as two or three proper stone ones. All made from stacked, unmortared stone, save for the larger hall on an earthen mound built into the wall. You assumed that was there the knight that was probably the lord of the Smallfort lived.
>>
The Main Hall is barely more than an adjoining building to the Smallfort’s kitchen with a battered table in the center surrounded by stools. At the head of the room was the outline of a high, carved armchair under a dust-covered cloth. There weren’t any locals seated at the table. Everyone there was clad in leather and had weapons at their side. You assume they were your new Brothers, although you spotted what looked like a Sister among them as well. There were no local guards among them, but that’s how smallkeep garrisons worked. The Militia was probably eating with their families in the village right outside the walls.

You feel a had clap you on the shoulder. “Arrived for a hearty meal, eh?” Hadhan asks, shaking your shoulder. “And what is this, your first proper meal in .. how many days?”

“A week now. But it’ll be my first proper drink in less than a night.”

Hadhan langued. “It was Iber red. Expensive stuff. But I barely have any left so you’ll have to content yourself with the swill the rest of these poor bastards are drinking.”

“Wine is a woman’s drink anyways!” A fur-clad giant with a head of blond hair roars from the table.

Hadhan is drawn into a spirited banter with his companions while you seat yourself at the table. A plump, young girl emerges from the kitchen with a trencher of porridge and a mug of the same black beer you had been drinking. The porridge was hearty, but quite bland. There was nothing in it but the same black bread crumbled into it, as well as two or three long-stewed vegetables. Not a scrap of meat. Examining the trencher, you see that it had been carved from the same loaves of bread they had been feeding you.

As the girl leaves, Hadhan pats her on her behind, causing her to squeak in embarrassment and retreat embarrassedly to the kitchen.

“The Gaoler’s daughter.” He explains to you, “A sweet girl, and quite enthusiastic too. A bit on the well-fed side, but she’s quite comely … UNLIKE HER FATHER!” he roars, to the guffawing of the table, save for the sole girl at the table who only snorts in disgust …

It was in that way that you came to break fast with a small unit of the Black Hounds. And over the meal, you come to know a little of your new companions.

>>
>>5023081

>>
>>5022808
If you run the numbers you will understand that, currently, the MC has a best case scenario of 60% success rate (Easy check and 20 skill) while the worst case scenario is a literal 1-in-a-1000 shot (Hard check and 10 skill). Our best case is already a coin flip. The numbers are stacked way high.

>>5022528
Just make it a flat bo3 with crit overwrites. Unless you plan on equipment giving us +50 bonuses most skill checks will still be close to a coin flip.
>>
>>5023234
Also instead of being solely dictated by static skill levels this way you can adjust difficulty with various modifiers without it becoming impossible (instead of Hard check you get +20 to DC etc.). Gives you more options and gives us a chance.
>>
>>5023234
Noted, but your skills will increase and your gear will give you bonuses and at times even negate the possibility of some wounds fairly soon. If that isn't enough, then I'll bump your stats or implement a bo3 system.
>>
>>5023240
What I'm afraid of is that that will give the bonuses too much variability to the point they seem arbitrary. With the Easy/Medium/Hard method, at least difficulty always changes by a set amount and if players disagree that something shouldn't be medium or hard given the situation or our character's skill level, then they can dispute it and I can readjust it easily.

But if the majority of players would prefer modifiers instead of difficulty level changes, I will make that change.

That being said, a vote would be super-appreciated if you have a preference in the options one way or another.
>>
>>5023234
>>5023240
A peasant, shit at combat? Who would've thunk?

Maybe make better choices in character creation instead of whinging on about how we suck at tasks because we were a professional butcher instead of a trained combatant. I'm not about to let you lads worm your way out of the consequences of your decisions. The dice system stays, and you got to deal with it.
>>
>>5023234
I did run the number and I am aware that even an Easy Strength/ Dexterity etc check would be about a third chance, but I’m also assuming that that this abysmal state of rubbish modifiers won’t last.

I’d rather we don’t revert to always Bo3 just to make our lives easier though. The problem then is that when we do actually gain experience and equipment and decent stats, it becomes much harder to fail unless one implements degrees of success/ failure, and a disproportionate amount of failures are crits if they do override. First thread’s too early to chance that, I think, especially since this is the prologue in which we purposefully suck.
>>
>>5023250
>>5023257
Don't listen to him Noir, he's just bitching that this isn't a traditional quest with an overpowered MC right off the bat. Sometimes anons have to realize that it ain't gonna be a cakewalk all the goddamn time.
>>
>>5023255
Please don't be mean anon. All the choices in CC I was fine with writing. Peasant was a choice in CC because while it makes for a more difficult early game, I think it provides more opportunity for growth in the character's case.

That being said, our character is not a trained combatant so please don't expect them to become a master swordsman relatively quickly. It will take work and training. But in the meantime, unless anons go out of their way to fight one, the MC will not end up fighting a master swordsman one-on-one.
>>
>>5022882

>>5023263
I get that, it's the bitching and trying to change the quest's dice system to his preference I don't like. If he wanted to be a QM he should've created his own quest.

I'll restrain myself in the future, but complaining about the dice system when it was the decisions that fucked us up really irks me. Take personal responsibility for your decisions anons, don't whine about how 'the system is broken, it's not my fault'.

>>5023269
I believe you're vote is here (>>5023264) lad.
>>
>>5023264
I think it would be more about setting difficult levels for the NPC, at which point we'd be rolling for two MCs instead of just the MC and the NPC. You add more people to the equation, and rolling three rolls for each (and determining each NPC's difficulty rating), will just turn this into a numbers shitshow, and won't improve the player's or the QM's quality of life when we get into battles with more than a single guard with a stick.

That's my thoughts on that, at least.

I will give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you are just emotional instead of retarded. You will notice that we have more checks than just combat. Furthermore, you will notice that even easy tasks are more likely to fail than not on all but 2 stats. On medium it becomes very unlikely and on hard we are more likely to roll 9 crits than a success on one of our 10 skills (illustratively).

And yes, making the NPCs roll more wont make the experience better.
>>5023259
I mean I get where you are coming from but I doubt putting on a hat will up our Intellect by 25 points. We will see but I have my doubts. Also if equpment starts giving more bonuses than we have stats (with exceptions ala full plate and endurance) it will be very gay.

>>
Having eaten three meals the past week, you’re too busy gorging yourself to talk much with your companions, but you still manage to learn something of them by listening to their conversations.

Hadhan was actually a sort of rising star in the Black Hounds. He had until recently been in the private retinue of the Company’s leader until he had broken off to form his own. He specialized in raids and small-unit actions, especially on high-sensitivity missions far from the pitched battles. But he had been involved in every Company action and campaign season for close to two decades. He was a black-souled bastard with an eye for wealth and women.

The Blond Giant was Ingmyr, a reaver from the Nordfjords, farther north than the furthest reaches of Gothyka. You had heard tales of explorers and raiders from that distant land, but Ingmyr had actually been picked up by the Company there, when it had been signed on for a war in the north.

The Mysterious, hooded figure was Farthorn. He had been a ranger in the King of Rosland’s employ that had kept the royal woods clear of occasional monsters and constant poachers, before being caught poaching himself. He had barely managed to escape to Gothyka with all his fingers.

And as for the girl, you didn’t learn much about her. You learned that her name was Schni and that she didn’t speak much to anyone except Hadhan.

That was all you learned before the meal ended.
“Now, Gentlemen …” Hadhan began at the end of the meal, “As much as you all have enjoyed living off the teat of these villagefolk, it has come time for us to leave on our Duty. Besides, let us admit that if we stay any longer then this village might become a hotter pan than we bargained for.”

“Hot for who I ask? The Gaoler would have your member nailed to the smallkeep wall if he had the courage to do it.” Farthorn jested to his leader.

“Never-the-less.” Hadhan continued, “I’ve received word of a caravan of our Employer’s enemies passing through the neighbouring fiefdom. It’ll be business as usual, lads. We hit it hard, loot whatever we can carry, and burn whatever we cannot!

The small party roared in response to the promise of blood and looting, before bustling off to handle their own preparations. But before he left, Hadhan clapped you on the shoulder.

“I trust you know how to make your preparations. Grab your weapons and gear and keep them ready to fight at any time. I expect no less from men under my command. Understand?”

You nod. “Understood … sir?”

“Call me Hadhan, or call me Brother.” Hadhan says, “And a word of advice? We leave tonight, and we’ll be traveling over country so best enjoy what a friendly village can offer while you can.”

After that bit of fraternal advice, you’re left to prepare by yourself. You turn to the Guard that had been showing you about, who had been waiting at the door.

“I’ll have my things back now then …”
>>
The Guard leads you to the Smallfort’s armory. It was right across the small, grassy courtyard next to the stables. Inside was a rack of hastily carved spears and cudgels. What few swords there were were propped up haphazardly on the wall. Among them, you see yours ...

>A shortsword, suitable for both short and knife-ranged combat

>A longsword, suitable for both short and medium-ranged combat

>A falchion, a single-edged cleaving weapon

>A saber, a quick and agile blade

>A rapier, cheap, but still precise

Alongside your weapon, you see your secondary weapon ...

>A shortbow

>A hand-spanning crossbow

>A butcher’s cleaver from home

>A mail-breaking poignard

>A heater shield

You also retrieve your rucksack, containing some basic supplies as well as a valued belonging.

>A pair of dice, carved from bone

>A wooden idol of your village’s nameless god

>A lock of hair from your childhood sweetheart, to remember them by

>A bronze arm ring, a last gift from your parents before they saw you off

>A tin flask of strong alcohol

Hi anons. Unfortunately I'll be too busy for a day or two to update, so sorry about that. In the meantime, our character doesn't have a name yet other than Joseph so why don't you talk about what to name him while I'm gone. I'll probably pick the one I like the best, but I'll of course take what my players like into great account as well.

>shortsword
>heater shield
>tin flask of booze

Seems to me that we should fight defensively and lean into our toughness here until we gain some stat boosts.

In terms of our name, we're a peasant named Joseph who's a butcher. We might not even have a last name, depending on the size of our town. We could keep our last name open until we do something of note?

Personally, I think I’d prefer one of those hastily carved spears the most. For starters, you can’t easily throw a sword. For another, we can keep the enemy far away like the craven peasant we are.

Barring that, I’d prefer

>A falchion, a single-edged cleaving weapon
>A heater shield
>A lock of hair from your childhood sweetheart, to remember them by

The falchion is because our character has no martial training whatsoever, but simultaneously, I don’t want to try and rush spearman with a shortsword. A falchion isn’t ideal, but it’s a good enough compromise until we can steal something like an axe or spear.

The shield is because our armour and skills are laughable, and so a shield is extremely useful. Our character doesn’t seem to have marksmanship training, and a shield will keep us alive far better than trying to dual wield or a nice dagger.

Finally, the hair is because I’m a sap. :)

>Longsword

I'm voting my meme preference, as it's pretty clear the large cleaver is the better pick. Also, our nickname should be Guts, since we were a former butcher and all.

Slightly saddened from missing the lock of our childhood sweetheart, it would've added a sentimental human element that would've contrasted with the aesthetic of the idol god quite nicely.

>>5023731

First, you unsheathe your falchion and inspect the blade for any rust. But the falchion was a rugged, durable weapon and it would take more than a week’s neglect to damage it. Although the blade was hardly heavier than a shortsword, it had a deceptive amount of chopping power. It felt familiar in your hand, although you still weren’t sure what it meant for your sword to be an extension of your arm, like the stories put it. You resheathe your falchion and tighten your sword belt around your waist.

Then, you sling your battered heater shield over your back. You slip your cleaver into your belt next to your falchion. A butcher should always have a variety of knives after all.

Finally, you withdraw the Idol from your rucksack. The Idol was a strange one. It was carved in the likeness of a faceless saintess, a statue of which stood in the woods close to your village. No one knew her name, but it had been the holiest object close to the village by far and so the saint depicted had become an object of the village’s reverence. You kiss it. It had been too long since you had paid it any reverence.

At long last, you’re fully armed again. Now, Hadhan had said something about making use of the village before you departed, right?

>After the way this village treated you, you won’t feel guilty helping yourself to the smallfort’s provisions.

>You’ll do more than take a few provisions. They owe you a spear or a helmet. You’re fighting their war!

I fully agree. I don’t really see how it conflicts with our stated tenants of honesty, humility, and charity, but maybe that’s the autism acting up. Don’t see chastity on there, and so long as we aren’t dishonest in our intentions, we should be fine even if she isn’t into us and and it stops there.

The Code of the Common Man doesn't really have any unbreakable tenants, or a set number of them. It's just the morality of a rando peasant in the setting. Chastity's a value, but also one that's broken quite a bit. Not raping your neighbour is a stronger value in comparison.
>>
>>5024511
That is literally it though. Do you plan on playing a man trying to act as well as he can (the code) or are you going to be a petty bitch willing to use others to air petty grievances (fuck the daughter just to piss off the fattie). A question of morals - decent man or cunt.
>>
>>5024539

Being locked up and starved for weeks on end isn’t a petty grievance, it’s sadism. I wonder how many innocents were jailed and starved to death just because the Goaler was in a bad mood? It maybe a poor substitute for justice, but I didn’t just decide to ignore the Code on a lark anon.

>>
After the way the Gaoler had treated you, there hadn’t been a way to get back at him save for denying him the chance to hew at your neck. But hearing what Hadhan had to say about his daughter, an idea soon came to you. It would be sweet revenge indeed to gain the affection of his dear daughter even when he loathed you so. After all, a battlefield wasn’t the only place a man could find spoils to conquer.

You find the girl in the Smallfort kitchen, kneading dough between mixing a large pot of porridge. There was no one else in the kitchen, but that was what you had been counting on. Smallforts were usually empty outside times of imminent battle. There was no point to a small or even medium-sized village maintaining a fully mobilized militia at all times. What few guards there were on duty were busy dicing in the Smallfort’s guardroom or else shirking their duties to help their families in the field. There wasn’t even a regular patrol of the walls.

Hence, the two of you would have a bit of privacy.

You knock on the doorframe of the kitchen to attract her attention.

“Oh? M-may I help you um …”

“Joseph.” You tell her your name, “And you are?”

“M-Marlette.” She blushes. Shy as a maiden, this one was. But if Hadhan’s story was true, then she was no maiden. You wonder if her Father knew.

You take a second to admire her. Her blush had turned her cheeks apple-red, giving a vigorous appearance to her young, heart-shaped face. Although there was nothing outwardly indecent about her dress, it still showed more than enough skin. Her sleeves were rolled up, exposing pale arms whitened further from the elbows down with flour. The low neckline of her dress exposed a window of milk-white flesh. Although thick and fleshy, none of her plumpness sagged, instead giving the promise of softness. Her breathing comes in titillating gasps, still out of breath from the work in the kitchen. A sheen of sweat from her hard labor and the heat of the cooking fire cover her forehead, although she wipes it away with a towel. Hopefully, you’d get the opportunity to make her sweat from another kind of labor.

>You followed your code and let your conscience guide you. In doing so, you progressed 1/2 towards a fate point. Not many in your line of work possess such scruples.

Unbidden, memories from your youth come to you, when you had secretly gazed at the young women of your village in such a manner and desired much the same thing. By now, some of them would have children of their own. You remember chaperoning over the children in your village playing in the fields when the harvest was good. By now, some of them would be as old as she was. Had Marlette been born in the same village as you, you would never have thought about her this crudely. She would have been like a sister to you. Did you really change this much since you left home?

An awful homesickness overtakes you.

“Master Joseph ...” Marlette asks, stepping closer as you don’t respond, “Did … did you need something?”

You look away from her, any desire gone. “Beer. Bring me beer.”

“O-of course!” Marlette scampers away to do as you request. Although she seems nervous, you don’t see any real fear in her. Only shyness. You doubt she’s seen significant hardship in her life. A child from your village would have been lucky to be as plump and healthy as she was. This was a prosperous village. Who were you to come here and think of doing with their daughters as you pleased?

“Your beer, Master Joseph.” She squeaks, bringing you a mug of the dark beverage. You mutter barely audible thanks and go back to stewing in your bad temper. But she doesn’t leave, standing timidly to the side.

“Girl, don’t you have work to do?” You growl …

“I’m sorry!” she squeaks, “It’s just that … you seem upset …”

“I seem upset, eh?” You muse, “You’re not wrong.”

“May I … ask why?” Marlette asks. She seems to be growing less nervous around you, speaking less haltingly.

You sigh. “To be honest … I miss my home.”

“Oh …” Marlette says, “I always thought the life of a sellsword was much more exciting than village life.”

“There are great hardships too.” You point out, “There’s adventure, yes, but a lot of it is marching in the rain from one camp to the other, all to spend a day in breech-pissing terror before you do the same thing again.”

“But Hadhan always says that the true charm of being a sellsword is finding brothers to call your own, and to risk your lives for glory with them.”

“Does he now?” You snort, “It might be true for him, but not for me. Saints, I should have never left home ...”

“I’ve never been beyond my village.” Marlette admits. “Hearing how you sellswords have been all across Gothyka, I can’t help but feel jealous.”

“Bah. A girl like you wouldn’t last a day living the way we do.” You spit, before quaffing your drink. Marlette quietly refills it. At some point, she had sat down across from you.

“Still, I’d like to see what’s beyond the horizon.” She says, before shyly asking. “Could you tell me what your hometown is like, Master Joseph?”

“Aye, I can. Perhaps I will.” You think back to your home, before you begin speaking. “I was born far to the East of here, where Gothyka meets the edge of the Wildlands, where the ground rises up in broken foothills to form the Cloudbreaker Mountains. Where the Earth has only been tamed for less than a dozen generations. This is a land which is not divided village to village and field to field between Knights and Petty lords, and their liegelords, and the High Lords above them. Here, the land is ruled by Marquesses who claim vast expanses of woodlands and hills and many unmapped rivers and lakes, dotted by clearings created by small settlements. My village was in the March of Chuland. To the west, south, and north, there were fields of barley and oat, although not the wheat that is so common here for our land was forgiving to it. But to the east, there was a forest. Once, beasts and goblins and wild men lived in it, but they had long been driven off the land. And yet, we often found crumbling ruins in the woods, their builders long since consigned to the Earth.”

“That sounds wonderful.” Marlette breathes, “To have that much space to yourself.” Throughout your tale, she had been keeping your mug filled to keep you speaking.

“It was so.” You agree. “Where we are now, we could cross a Lord’s domain on foot in a day. But where I come from, a man could ride for a week on horseback and not see the whole domain. We were far away from the power of our liegelords, and seldom paid taxes. And yet, when famines struck, we were too far away to receive aid. And famines there were …”

“Is that why you left?” Marlette asks.

You bite your lip, as memories you had bottled up come back to the surface. Of your seventeenth year when the harvest had failed three years in a row. Of the difficult choice your parents had faced, to keep both of their sons at home and see them starve together or to send the younger away for greener lands. Of how you had hitched a ride with a caravan moving West, watching your small village shrink until it vanished beyond the horizon. You had lost track of the years since then, but the fields you had found were not green, but red.

“Aye.”

The two of you sit in silence. Marlette not knowing what to say further and you not having the heart to continue speaking. Until finally, she breaks the silence. “If you miss your past life, why not return home? Or settle in a village and live an honest life?”

Why didn’t you? That was a good question …

>Why would you return home? You’d still be in the same situation as you were before, starving.

>Joseph has increased his story lore

“An honest life you say?” Could you do that? Open a butchery in a prosperous village, find a wife, whelp a few children to raise in a quiet, humble life. To work honestly again. Try as you might, you simply can’t imagine it. You hadn’t ever found a place in your travels where you’d be able to set down your roots. There was another reason too. Someone who had never left their village might not know it, but peace in Gothyka was fragile. As quiet as this village was, it was already serving as a point of operation for some High Lord’s war. Knowing that, you’d never feel safe settling down. You wouldn’t be able to trust it.

“So long as Gothyka is at war, I cannot live in peace.” You tell Marlette.

“I’m sorry, but I don’t understand …” Marlette says.

“It’s better that you don’t.” You reply, “Just know that as long as you can feel at peace living where you are, there is nothing worth seeing beyond the horizon …”

Leveling

You may increase one stat by 10 and redistribute up to 10 points of one stat other than Toughness or Willpower to another stat. You may also burn fate points for an extra 5 points to redistribute.

Because this is not a leveling grounded in the story of the quest itself, you may not increase any stat higher than your toughness or willpower stat.

>>5026279
What about str +10 instead of perception +5 str +5?

We do need a physical stat we’re good in if we’re going to fight, but with the falchion boni I don’t think it’s too desperate, and a good charisma can rarely substitute one to one with perception, especially for a wandering drifter. Still, five less perception won’t be the end of the world, if we’d prefer that.
>>
I just realised that there’s not actually much point in what I just said, since it’s a vote and we’re meant to vote.

Having said that, maybe we should start thinking about what stats we want to favour, and how high is’ high’ regarding stats. The way dice mechanics work, we’re very motivated to raise the stats we want to use most to at least 40, to reliably pass easy checks and stand a decent chance on medium ones. Similarly, even if we plan to only sometimes make easy checks with a stat, getting it to 25 would mean we at least have an over half chance of achieving that.
>>
>>5026372
I think strength and toughness should be a priority. Then we could vote on what other stat to increase after those hit 40+
>>
>>5026366
That's fine. I just think it's better to focus on getting 1 stat to 20 rather than two 15, improve our chances to 20% on an easy roll instead of splitting the difference with 15% for either. Plus, this means that a Strength attack is more viable than before, where we were taking hits instead of dishing them out.

>>5026372
>>5026382
I say Toughness, Will, and Strength, with a dash of Charisma. We can always redistribute if need be.
>>
>>5026029

Ah, thanks Noir.

Calm me daft, but I’m going to to suggest that, once we rush str and dex to basic competence (~30, because that sounds good?) I actually want to focus on mental stats- specifically Intelligence and Will.

Realistically, I don’t think this system will let us be a super combatant unless we pump stats until we’re cutting down mooks in a single blow, nor do I want to play a super combatant, since then I would have voted to be a knight and literally be trained from boy/girlhood to achieve just that. Once we achieve competence, I’d rather we focus on Joseph’s mind- because being smart, brave and reasonably personable is a far better bet to gain a better lot in life for a common mercenary than trying to be a one man army. Additionally, combat is actually the easiest part of this game because we’re matched against other people here, and not the cruel unfeeling percentages.

So once we achieve str and dex (str on the offensive with the falchion, dex to defend ourselves with a shield, which is actually really synergistic both in real life and mechanically), I’d like to focus on Intelligence, Willpower and Charisma.

Yes, my own vote runs counter to what I say might be good, but that’s because I’ll probably just stack boni at the end of the day based mostly on how we got that level up, even if that leaves us deficient in something like Intelligence. That’s life.
>>
>>5026599
>sellsword
>"let's artificially cap our sword skill"
I agree with you that people skills are more profitable and more useful in life but with the current dice system we will not live long enough to use those people skills unless we pump combat skills to at least the 50s. And that is assuming we only fight common mooks.
>>

Eventually Marlette needs to return to her chores. Your beer runs dry and with no more reason to stay in the kitchen, you leave in search of something else to do, or at least somewhere more comfortable to be idle. When you walk out of the kitchen, you see Hadhan leaning against the wall of the courtyard, holding what looked like two wooden swords. He seemed to be waiting for you.

Hear me out, for I have a most cunning ploy!

The wooden sword, mechanically, seems useless.
Now, in real life, a sword and a shield typically has an advantage over only having a shield. In this case, though, our shield deals as much damage with as much range as a wooden sword.

Ergo, since unless Noir accounts for the enemy then trying to outflank us, we could throw the sword at him and probably be better off for it.

If we do so, I vote we do so either when we have no other option, or at the end of a turn in which we have initiative to keep out initiative going, since we can capture the Initative from him but have much more difficulty retaining it.

I just realized it says you check dexterity for initiative when it should be agility. Apologies for that. Then again, both of those stats on you are the same so it didn’t make a difference before that mistake was caught.

If you continue to attack Hadhan conventionally, your chances of victory are slim. The difference in your ability was too great. That’s why if you wanted to land at least one blow, then you would have to try something new.

You’ll feint with your sword and strike with your shield. If you catch Hadhan off guard, then it might just be enough to exploit an opening.

Joseph Saintswood’s Roll: 57
Black Hound Hadhan’s Roll: Underroll

You’re not entirely sure what happens next. At some point, you had lost eye contact with the tip of Hadhan’s sword. Half a second later, you found it resting on your shoulder. Ah, you remember. Hadhan had bound your blade with his, simultaneously leaning too far to the side for you to use your shield. Then, he had forced his blade forwards with a powerful thrust, scraping it along yours until it rested on your shoulder. Had it been a real thrust and the blade of live steel, you would have been a twist of the wrist away from death.

“Mediocre.” Hadhan sighs ...

-- Result --
Hadhan WINS

“You’ve got a solid stance, I’ll give you that.” Hadhan admits, slapping your shield. “Now, why do you think I won?”

“You’re stronger than me.” You say, as you hand your training sword back to Hadhan.

“Not quite.” Hadhan wags his finger. “Using a sword isn’t just swinging a sharp piece of metal through the air. I won’t call it an art form like the sirs and lords do, but it takes rigorous training to develop skill. You have to practise with your blade for months on end if you want to get any better. I mean sinking downtime into it. And some things, you won’t learn unless you find someone to teach you.”

“Aye.” You nod. Until now, you had thought of combat like trying to butcher a carcass that was still moving. But now, you were beginning to understand that there was much more to swordplay than just the sword ...

“If you have anything to teach me, I would be thankful to hear it.” You tell Hadhan.

“I ain’t your mother. I’m not going to spend my own time teaching you how to use a sword you should already know how to use.” Hadhan grumbles, “Don’t be overreliant on your shield when fighting someone more skilled than you. It can be your lifeline in combat, but there are many ways to get around it. A solid lad like you, I’d say when you get your first real pay, use it to buy good armor. You won’t be able to afford heavy plate, but a shirt of mail, maybe even good almain rivet ...”

“Thank you for your advice.” You say, bowing.

“Don’t bow to me.” Hadhan complains, “I’m not your master at arms, just an old sellsword sharing tricks that’ll keep you from being gutted longer … Still, if you ever need a good bout, I’d be more than happy …”

Night has fallen. The village is asleep. But the members of the Black Hounds are gathered in the Smallfort’s room, preparing for their Duty. The smell of oil from the blade whetting hung in the air. Packs of provisions leaned against the wall, being tallied one last time. A map was spread out over the table.

“We are here.” Hadhan explained, pointing at a small dot on the map, not even labeled. “At the edge of Duke Grenzheim’s domain. And our target will be here …” Hadhan’s finger moved across the map to a long road … ”Passing along this route from the trade town of Harvesthorpe to outlying villages. Our enemy are the men of Count Visihrod. They’re like to be village militia, supplemented with men-at-arms from the town, escorting caravans of arms and trade goods. As for our route, we will be striking cross-country through the domains of another, neutral lord which is why we must travel at night to avoid discovery.”

“Why are the two fighting?” You interject.

“Some tax dispute, does it matter?” Hadhan laughs, “Good coin for us though. If we were men of Lord Grenzheim, our discovery would bring more Lordlings into the conflict. But as it is, this sort of task is what the Gods created sellswords for. The crossing of the land will take two days, after which we will reach the Untilled Wood. Once we traverse there, we will be in the land of Duke Grenzheim and free to raid and pillage with surprise on our side. Now, any questions?”

>No, seriously. Why are those two Lords fighting?

>How did Hadhan know the caravan was coming?

>Untilled Wood? That sounds dangerous.

More information on the place we are going to would help.
>>
>>5031006
>Untilled Wood? That sounds dangerous.
>This seems a very minor raid. Why go through all the effort?
>>
“It’s a patch of woodland that was never tamed.” Hadhan explains, “In the past, rangers kept it free of the more dangerous beasts, but the forest could never be completely tamed. People who wandered in had a way of going missing. And even if it was, Untilled Woods have a way of attracting more beasts from afar. Still, I’ve been in plenty of untamed land in my time and I doubt we’ll have much to fear.”

You had grown up on the Eastern Frontier. You knew what an Untilled Wood was. Soil that had forgot Man, untouched by cold iron since the Fall. Where primordial trees grew thick and tall and strange beasts made their abode. Some tales even spoke of Demons spontaneously arising from the earth the same way maggots spontaneously bore themselves from spoiled meat. The land your village had been on was safe enough, but it had been made so through blood. The thought of passing through one filled you with unease. But perhaps the ones here were safer, not directly bordering true Wildland.

“This seems like a very minor raid.” You observe, “We’re risking a lot by going through dangerous territory. Why make so much effort for one raid?”

“It seems that way doesn’t it?” Hadhan says, “But it is only the beginning of more raids to come in that area. Our Employer’s presence there is limited, but that will change with our arrival. Raids aren’t only to harass our Employer’s enemy. We will disrupt their supply lines. We will learn of their forces in the area. And who knows? If they learn that Grenzheim can send men undetected to harass even his territories away from the fighting, they’ll be forced to send soldiers there in case of a larger attack. That’ll take enough pressure away from where the fighting actually is for a breakthrough.”

“So we’re to be the first forces on our side in the area?”

“That’s right.”

So you’d be bringing war to a previously peaceful part of Gothyka. Part of that sits uncomfortably with you, but such was the way of things.

“Alright, grab your gear and make ready. We leave now!” Hadhan roars.

Since you've finished the tutorial, might as well give some lore on the immediate setting. You don't have to read it but it's there for those who like this sort of thing ...

Gothyka
The Empire of Gothyka takes up much of the heart of central Westerndom. Ruled by a High King, it is a divided land, composed of innumerable duchies, baronies, princedoms, and city states. Bordered by ocean and mountain on all it’s borders, the land is an ideal cradle for the Gothyk people for there are few avenues for another peer empire to attack. It is a land long tilled. Throughout Gothyka, villages are rarely more than a day’s journey away from each other and towns are commonplace. The loam, tilled with cold iron and blessed by priests, is bountiful. This allows for the common folk of Gothyka to be set to war or building great works by their High Lords without fear of famine. For this reason, Gothyka is a land of soaring cathedrals and sprawling fortresses, as well as a land of unusually bloody wars.

However, this was not always the case. Gothyka once stood as a confederation of tribal kingdoms in opposition to the Ilian Empire to the south. However, even in their rivalry, the white city of Ilium taught the Gothykans much, from writing to steel working to the Ilian way of war. The feudalism that is the bedrock of Gothyk society is derived from the manoral systems of the late Ilian Empire. But that changed at the end of the First Age of Man when wave after wave of Beastmen descended from beyond the Cloudbreaker Mountains upon the lands of Men, overwhelming the greatest Empire Westerndom had ever known in a wave of hide, horn, and gristle. Against the wrath of the Wildlands which the peerless Legions of Ilium could not withstand, the tribal war parties of Gothyka were barely an afterthought. For centuries, Gothyka was untilled. The Primeval Forests of the North and East grew over what was once land tamed by the plow, and in those new forests, wild men and beastfolk capered and frolicked under the domain of the Old Gods. Over the centuries of the Dark Age, the armies of the Wilderness devoured each other in an anarchy of blood and violence, for without settled lands to plunder, they had no way of sustaining themselves.

But scattered pockets of civilization endured amidst the ruin. Valleys guarded by castles, fortified towns, isolated monasteries that kept the lore of the ancient Empires alive. In time, the land of Gothyka was reclaimed, by intrepid woodsmen, hacking the wilderness away clearing by clearing until the land that the Gothyk people had once inhabited was all but reclaimed. In a world without the Ilian Empire, the new Gothyk kingdoms were situated for a much more prominent place in the world. But little of the old world remained, much had been lost and the lore preserved in Gothyk monasteries was only a fraction of the wisdom the Ilians had possessed. And still, pockets of the wilderness remained in the Untilled Woods that dot the Gothyk countryside. Hills too rugged to cultivate, forests unusually dangerous to enter, or patches of land where crops simply refused to take and where children sickened and died. Gothyka’s mountain borders are untameable and the refuge of all manner of threats from brigands to wild men to beastfolk to … darker things. However, despite it all, Gothyka was born.

In it’s early days, the land was united. However, for the past two centuries, open warfare between the various Lordly Domains has raged while Royal Authority grows ever weaker. Unlike other feudal realms, the fiefdoms of Gothyka are large, nations unto themselves with the capacities that entails. Although all pay a token tax to the High King, there are many nobles whose incomes from their domains surpass the income of the Throne. Some are even near-independent, with the northernmost provinces of Gothyka having broken away to form the Iron Kingdom, under the rule of the false Chosen One. And although the realm is too large to be conquered at once, the enemies harrying the gates of Gothyka are innumerable, from the Northmen Reavers that harry the coast, to goblin clans in the Cloudbreaker Mountains, to beastfolk raids from the Wildlands beyond. And Gothyka has few real allies. Perhaps only the dwarves of Dwarfhome to the southeast and the Kingdom of Iber across the sea. But by far the greatest threat to Gothyka are the powerful nobles of the realm themselves, as their continuous feuding and warring threatens to push the realm beyond it’s endurance and splinter it permanently ...

And now back to your irregularly scheduled programming ...

Arc One: The Raider Commander
You have fallen in with the Black Hounds, an infamous sellsword company with an impeccable professional reputation … and a much less savoury reputation in virtually every other area. Recruited by Hadhan, a commander within the company, you join his band on a duty of raiding the lands of Count Visihrod. Alongside you and the grizzled sellsword, there is also the Northman Reaver Ingmyr, the Rosland ranger Farthorn, and a mysterious girl named Schni. It is a small part of the larger conflict between him and your employer, Baron Grenzheim. But why march so far to raid lands away from the war? What started the conflict between the two Lords in the first place? And of all people, why had Hadhan recruited you, a barely trained former butcher?

Chapter 1: Through the Untilled Wood

Day breaks grudgingly, the dawn rays barely making it through a thick morning fog. The party had stopped to shelter in an old, abandoned chapel for the day. You had marched throughout the entire night, first crossing from Baron Grenzheim’s land into another domain and marching cross-country from there, avoiding any roads for fear of discovery. You were grateful for the stop, although you hadn’t given complaint during the march. It hadn’t helped that Hadhan had made you responsible for the provisions pack. By the end of it, you could feel a sparing respect from the veteran sellswords at how you had gamely struggled through the wheat fields and tilled land and through irrigation channels without a word. You were still passing through the domain of a neutral lord and it would be another day until you were through. The five of you would hide here for the day to recover your strength, before resuming your travel at night.

The chapel was a small, neglected building in a long-fallow field. The pews had long been eaten up by worms. Part of the roof had fallen in. The statue on the altar was of a woman in a cloak. The stone had been long-greyed by exposure to the elements. Her face was missing, cracked off by a piece of masonry. Strangely, she bore some resemblance to your idol.

Everyone had set up their bedrolls around the edges of the building, where parts of the roof still stood and provided some shade to sleep in. Farthorn built a smokeless fire near the altar, just slightly to the side so that any passerby who stared through the door would not see it’s flames.

You didn’t know the name of the goddess or saint who’s chapel there was, but your parents had always said that there was little difference between the different deities. You were staying under it’s roof so you might as well offer your respects. Who knew when you would have the chance to pray in a sanctified place again?

You kneel in front of the Altar, bow, and then clasp your hands in silent prayer. You had never been taught any words to any prayers by your parents. You pray for safety in battle, that your family back home is doing well. You hope that some god, at least, is watching over you.

Your prayer is broken by the sound of a stream of urine being released onto the wall. You hear Ingmyr groaning in relief.

“Bastard, this is a holy space.” Hadhan says. But his tone is joking.

“I don’t know the faceless bitch on that altar. She’s no god of mine.” Ingmyr growls as he pulls up his breeches ...

You try to sleep during the day. But the sun is bright and it takes you a while to fall asleep, even in the shade. When you do, your dreams are strange. You dream that the statue is watching you from the altar. It doesn’t move, but you can feel it’s gaze on you.

Suddenly, you’re prodded awake. It’s Farthorn the ranger.

“Take the watch. I need to sleep.” He says.

“What time is it?” You ask.

“A little past noon.” He says, before pulling a piece of bread from your pack and heading to his corner of the chapel.

You stare at the statue. It’s faceless head stared blankly past you, as inanimate as before …

You have gained Piety. Piety is a meter that can armor you against certain attacks and give you certain abilities when you have enough of it, but can also lead to side effects.

Piety - 5

Night falls again, and everyone awakens. As people pack up and grab their breakfast, the provisions pack is lifted out of your hands by Ingmyr.

“Let me carry it.” He says, “If you carry it the whole way, you’ll tip over before we get to the Untilled Wood.”

You glance at Hadhan, but he doesn’t seem to object. If you were honest, not having to carry the pack would be the lifting of a burden ...

>Insist on carrying the pack. It was assigned to you.

Most of the information you know about it has already been given. It's a nameless deity that is worshipped because it has a relic extremely close to the village. People pray to it for general things such as luck.

Same, but I figured offering a portion of our meal was more respectful to the deity who sheltered us. Really makes me wonder what it would've been like playing as a Ghazi.
>>
You break off a piece of bread and pour out some of the beer from your skin onto the altar. It seemed only right to offer a portion of the meal to the deity you had sheltered under. Perhaps she would bring you luck. You recall the harvest festivals of your home village where wine, grain, and meat would be buried in fields before being plowed into the soil.

“Didn’t know you were so pious, Lad.” Hadhan comments.

“Do you not keep the Gods?” You ask.

Hadhan snorts. “Don’t get me wrong, Lad. I like pious people. They’re the only ones foolish enough to be trustworthy.”

You ignore Hadhan’s backhanded compliment as you pour out the remainder of your sacrifice on the altar before clasping your hands around your idol. It might just be your imagination, but when you close your eyes in prayer, the idol feels warm to the touch …

Piety - 7

Progress is faster than expected and by daybreak, you are already at the edge of the Untilled Wood. The autumn nights were long and a good distance had been traveled under the cover of darkness.

“Once we enter, we will be hidden.” Hadhan announces, “We’ll find shelter for the night and make camp as soon as possible. I don’t want to be stumbling around in these woods after dark. Farthorn, scout ahead for any potential threats. The rest of you, keep your eyes open.”

Stepping into the Untilled Wood was like stepping into another world. The air was slightly warmer and damper, as if autumn hadn’t completely taken hold. While the trees outside were clad in hues of gold and orange, the trees here were a dark green interspersed with brown. The earth underneath your feet gave off an impossibly rich smell. Despite the trees blocking out the sun, the forest floor was thick with foliage.

It made you feel uneasy …

Walking through the forest, it felt like something was crawling on your skin. There was the sense of entropy hanging in the air, as if your clothes were decaying at an imperceptibly faster rate than usual. You stepped through areas of the forest floor where nothing grew and the soil under your boots felt more like mulch. Once, you stepped on a seemingly solid wooden log only for it to disintegrate beneath your feet, revealing an inside infested by grubs. The more you stared at the branches of the trees, the more angular and thorny they seemed, as if they were a prison around you …

“Joseph, are you okay?” Ingmyr asks, noticing you starting to trail behind the group.

“Yeah.” You say, rubbing your forehead. The nausea faded away as quick as it came. Now, the forest looked the same as any other forest. Perhaps it had been your imagination.

“Don’t fall behind in an Untilled Wood.” Hadhan warns from far up the path, “They say that your soul won’t reach the afterlife if you die here.”

“I’ve never heard that saying before. Who says that?”

“Pious people!” Hadhan laughs, continuing on without waiting for you. Schni waits for you to start walking again before disappearing beyond the next path.

“A swig of mead helps settle your stomach after you set foot somewhere witchy.” Ingmyr says, offering you his beerskin. “Well, this is beer, but it ought to do the trick.”

“You notice it too?” You ask, gratefully accepting the beerskin.

Dokk Ein be damned, my hair’s been on end ever since setting foot in this forest.” Ingmyr curses. You notice him clutching a small amulet in his hand, a horned double-axe on a chain. “There are plenty of wild places in my homeland, but the ones in Gothykheim are uncommonly bad. I’d bet my right hand that a witch lives in these woods.”

“A witch, you say? And what would we do if we met one?”

“Same thing I’d do if I met one back home.” Ingmyr draws a finger over his throat. “Cut off her head! Har Har!”
>>
When you catch up, Hadhan and Schni are stopped in a clearing.

“Bad news friends.” Hadhan announces.

When you step into the clearing, you notice a small cluster of poles at the center of it that Hadhan and Schni were staring at. You examine the poles. They were striped red and brown. Hung from their tips were animal skulls ranging from small squirrels to a deer. Some of the skulls were still covered in flesh.

“What could have made these?” You wonder.

“Could be anything.” Hadhan ponders, “Trolls or beastmen or …”

“Goblins.” Farthorn says, striding out of the woods, “It’s goblins.”

Although you had never seen one, tales of Goblins were common in the borderlands. Farther out, deeper into the Cloudbreaker Mountains, stories of vicious, child-sized creatures attacking in the night, burning down entire farms, slaying the livestock, and devouring the humans before disappearing into the wild were carried by traders and furriers.

“Just goblins? We’re safe for now then. I’ve heard goblins attack at night.” You say.

“Goblins attack whenever they please.” Farthorn corrects you.

“Let them come.” Ingmyr sneers, “Even a dozen goblins would be no challenge for any of us, daytime or not. Isn’t that right, Schni?”

Schni, who has remained silent the entire discussion, refrains from speaking.

“Underestimating goblins is a sure way to death.” Farthorn mutters.

“Still, they won’t attack such a well-armed party in broad daylight. But best keep our eyes peeled when evening comes.” Hadhan decides, “Farthorn, have you found a suitable location to set up camp for the night?”

“Aye.” Farthorn nods …

Farthorn leads you to a rocky outcrop that rises up from the forest floor. There was a small grove of trees at the top whose roots crisscrossed the outcrop, forming a knobby, bumpy surface. If you were going to be spending the night here, it would be an uncomfortable night.

Without a word, the members of the party take to setting up camp. You’d help, but no one’s told you what to do …

You see that Schni is working on skinning and gutting a brace of rabbits. she’s quite handy with a knife as well, handling it with a dextrous touch. But she doesn’t seem to know any of the best ways to prepare a rabbit. After only a minute of watching, you’re almost forced to look away in pain as you watch her gut an entire rabbit and skewer the whole thing for roasting. If such good-quality meat was going to end up crudely skewered over a campfire, you wouldn’t be able to keep your dinner down tonight. You’ve got to help her. You just have to.

“Here, give me some of those.” You say, walking over to her.

“You don’t get extra just because you help prepare them.” Schni warns.

“I’m not asking for extra.” You say as you grab half of the rabbits and get to work. “Did Farthorn catch these?” You ask, noticing the bundle of bloody arrows at Schni’s side. Schi nods an affirmative.

You set to work, expertly skinning the rabbits. At first, Schni pays you no mind, focusing on her work. But after a while, she starts glancing over once she sees that not only have you skinned and gutted two rabbits in the time it took her to skin and gut one, you’ve also prepared them more thoroughly. She watches you cut the limbs off of your third labit and divide them at the joints, then quarter the breast, separating the meat into small, evenly sized portions perfect for skewering.

“Damn, it isn’t even cooked yet and it already looks delicious.” Hadhan comments as he walks by.

At this point, Schni has stopped her work to watch you instead, so you decide to give an impromptu lecture on how to properly butcher a rabbit.

“You shouldn’t throw all the guts away.” You say, “The liver of a rabbit are good for eating, as are the kidneys …” You slice those free with your knife before setting them aside … “Save these cuts, they’re choice portions best cooked apart …” You separate fat-heavy portions of the rabbit carcass ... “And don’t grill the whole rabbit at once. Cut it into small, evenly-shaped pieces so that every piece cooks evenly.” You finish your demonstration of how to properly dress a rabbit.

“You’re pretty good at this.” Schni admits. You think that’s the most you’ve heard her say so far.

“Thanks.” You say before sighing ruefully, “I was taught how to butcher pigs and cows but in the end I ended up butchering rabbits and squirrels more often than not.”

“So you were a butcher before becoming a sellsword huh?” Schni says, as she returns to her work.

“Aye.” You reply, wiping your knife clean …

>”And how did a lass like you end up a sellsword? You’re pretty skilled with a knife yourself.”

Unlike most new butchers, Schni knows how to use a knife, so you’re not worried about her cutting herself. But she can’t seem to get the pieces even. Her cuts are so sloppy and off from the landmarks that you’re starting to think you would have been better off just letting her spit the whole rabbit.

“Be careful gutting, you don’t want to nick the intestine.” You warn Schni. “Cut off the legs first. Then divide the body from under the arms … don’t tear it apart with your hands! Always complete the cut with your knife!”

To her credit, Schni learns quickly. Soon, she’s working without your supervision.

“So why did a skilled butcher like you become a sellsword?” Schni asks as she corrects her work on the last rabbit.

“Not enough food at home.” You explain. “And when I left it in search for work, I found I didn’t have enough coin to open a shop of my own. I barely had enough to afford bread, much less meat to cut.”

“I see.” Schni nods. “I hear some of the guilds in the bigger towns will loan you the coin to open a shop if you join them.”

“A loan like that would put a man into debt for a decade.” You say, “Besides, I’m from the Eastern Frontier. We don’t like other men claiming to own our hard work like a guild would.”

“I can understand that.” Schni whispers, “Not being beholden to another.”

“And how about you?” You ask, “How does a lass like you become part of a sellsword company? You’re pretty skilled with a knife yourself.”

At once, Schni’s demeanor becomes guarded. “No reason. Using a knife is just what I’m best at doing in this world.”

Despite the obvious strangeness of a knife being the thing a young lass is best at using in the world, you decide not to press the issue too much. “A knife is a good thing to know how to handle. Are you any good at woodcarving?”

“Woodcarving?” Schni tilts her head in surprise, “Well, no, but I’m a fair hand at scrimshawing.” It seems she had been expecting a different, less comfortable line of questioning.

“Scrimshawing? What’s that?” You ask.

“Carving bone.” Schni explains, pulling something out of her pocket. It was a long, saber-like tooth the length of a dagger. Carved onto it were intricate designs of stylized figures fighting, celebrating, and … more carnal acts. There was writing you didn’t recognize, but you couldn’t read anyways. It didn’t look Gothyk. The carvings at the top of the bone were crude and hacked in, but as they spiraled down the bone, it became more and more detailed, as if picked into the bone with a needle. The bone near the tip was smooth and uncarved.

“It seems to tell a story.” You say. You observe that one figure is central to the carvings, a tall, crowned woman wielding a scythe. “Who is that?”

“Kathyrn Eisa! Queen of the middle ring!” Schni exclaims excitedly, “The greatest human gladiatrix in Myrkalfgard history!”

“I don’t know any of these names.” You admit.

“Ah. That’s right, the tales of Myrkalfgard are not well known in the south.” Schni says.

“I don’t mind foreign stories.” You say.

Schni nods. “Kathyrn Eisa was a fighter in the pits of the Dark Elves. A legendary fighter, she won riches and fame in the arena, attracting the sponsorship of wealthy patrons and living like a queen. But more than that, she inspired her fellow slave-fighters. She shared her wealth generously, was gracious and merciful to opponents weaker than her. She even went out of her way to supervise and train neophytes that could not yet find sponsors.” Schni’s voice was heavy with emotion that she could barely keep contained.

“Sounds like a woman worthy of song.” You say.

“She was.” Schni nods.

Perhaps she would have said more. But the light is fading and people are beginning to arrive around the campfire Farthorn had started. Schni quickly clams up when Ingmyr strides up the boulder, dumping a load of firewood onto the ground.
>>
“The rabbit is different than before.” Ingmyr comments loudly, tearing off multiple chunks off his skewer at once.

“Say what you will about Untilled Woods, the game there is always plumper.” Farthorn says, as he turns his skewer over.

“I’m not talking about that, I’ve tasted your catches from these sort of woods before.” Ingmyr snorts, “But it’s still better. Schni! your cooking improved, girl!”

“Really? I can’t tell the difference.” Farthorn says, gnawing on a hindleg that looked like it had been torn off from the rest of the body before being skewered. He spits a mouthful into the fire. “Undercooked, like always.”

“It’s because half of those rabbits were prepared by our newcomer.” Hadhan laughs.

You take a bite out of your own skewer. The meat was delicious. Fattier and at the same time with more sinew than the rabbit you were used to, but flavored with some herbs that Farthorn had found in the forest. It was aromatic, only enhanced by being roasted over a campfire.

“This kind of game, it’s usually reserved for kings and lords, isn’t it?” You say.

Hadhan glances around. “I don’t see any kings around here.”

“Besides, they have the good sense not to venture into Untilled Woods.” Farthorn adds.

You notice that Schni is avoiding some cuts of the. Namely, the liver and kidneys. You had found them quite good, pan-fried with the fat from the rabbit. It seems Hadhan has noticed too.

“You don’t like it?” Hadhan asks teasingly.

“I’ve never tried a rabbit’s entrails before.” Schni grumpily replies.

“Hah.” Hadhan laughs, “Well Schni, if you can stomach it, I’ll give you a share of the FIVE SILVERS ON WHETHER SHE CLEANS HER SKEWER OR NOT!”

“Done!” Ingmyr roars, slapping a handful of coins on the ground in front of him. “I’ve heard the rumors from around the camp. This lass doesn’t like the taste of meat no matter how … impressive the cut! Har har!”

“I’m partial to the taste of entrails myself.” Farthorn says, dropping five silvers from his purse on the ground. “Besides, they say that the unwholesome miasma of the Untilled Woods gathers in the liver of the beasts that live therein.”

“Oh ye of little faith.” Hadhan says, “You’re willing to risk ten coins just to divide up my five? So, what say you, Joseph?”

“''I made sure to prepare it right.” You say, placing five silver on the ground, “Whatever nastiness this rabbit catches in these woods, it will gather in the same place as the rest of the rabbits excrement. That is, as long as you hunted them alive and kicking.''

“Of course I hunted them alive and kicking.” Farthorn sniffs, “I wouldn’t stoop so low as to bring carrion to the cooking pot.”

You look over to Schni.

“Fine!” She exclaims, before glaring daggers at Hadhan, “I hope you pay for this, chief.” Schni begins nibbling at the liver and kidneys impaled on her skewer, before gulping them down. Although her expression is angry at first, it soons mellows out and by the end, she seems to be savouring the taste. “It’s good.” She admits.

Ingmyr tosses his (clean) skewer to the ground in disgust while Farthorn sighs, handing his silver over to Hadhan.

“Ten silver well spent.” Hadhan crows, “Divided between the three of us, that’s three for Schni, two for Joseph, and five for myself …”

There is more bantering and revelry for half of the night, but at one point, Hadhan leads you partly away from the party.

“Damn Joseph, you should have told me you were a passing cook earlier.” Hadhan says, “I always treat my cooks well. No carrying the baggage, no late night watches. You wouldn’t believe how hard it is to find a good cook among sellswords ...”

“Hadhan, mind I ask you something?”

“Sure.” Hadhan nods, “If it’s about how to open Schni’s legs, then I suggest you pray to your God since no one has the answer to that.”

“It isn’t about that!” You insist, “But you do seem to know Schni better than the others.”

Hadhan strokes his chin. “It does look that way doesn’t it? Well, the truth is that lass and I go back a long way. That one had no friends when she first joined the Black Hounds and I was the first commander she knew. On my first duty with her, things got dicy. She saved my life, I saved hers. Never seen a man as quick with a stiletto as she is.”

“So it’s a longstanding professional relationship?” You ask.

“A bit more than that.” Hadhan says, “I’m still her only ally among the commanders of the Black Hounds. As a Raid Leader, I’m also one of the only ones where her skillset is valuable. I’d like to think that we’ve worked together long enough to appreciate one another.”

“I see.” You nod.

When you return to the campfire, the revelrous feeling has died down. The night was growing late and if the party was going to sleep it would be now. Spotting the two of you approaching, Farthorn raises a finger to his lips, before quietly notching an arrow. He peers out into the forest, listening intently. Then, he looses. The arrow whistles through the air, before it is lost in the shadow of the woods. Then, you hear a quiet, guttural squeak.

“Scouts.” Farthorn says, the need for silence lost. “They’ve been watching us, waiting for us to go to sleep. Rest while you can, I’ll take first watch. No Goblins will be sneaking up on us …

Try as you might, sleep evades you. You keep seeing the flashing of daggers and the glinting of teeth in the darkness. Farthorn has not fueled the fire and the fading of the coals fills your stomach with dread. The snatches of sleep you do find quickly lead to dreams that wake you.

You’re awoken by Farthorn shaking your shoulder.

“Get up.” He whispers.

Looking around the camp, you see every other member of the party sitting half-up in their beds, their weapons clutched close to their bodies. The campfire has burned down to nothing more than hot coals. With the illumination of the fire gone, you could only see by the moonlight. But only relying on your night vision, the forest seemed much more clear. You could see short, squat shapes gathering at the bottom of the outcrop, clutching the silhouettes of weapons in their hands. You could hear a guttural grunting speech amongst them.

“Goblins. Twenty of them.” Farthorn whispers to you, “Mind the ones in the trees.”

A single goblin climbed up the outcrop, clutching a spear in its hand. It sniffed around the sleeping rolls. Hadhan rolled over and decapitated it with his broadsword. Pandemonium erupted.

Shrieking and hollering, goblins clambered up the outcrop. Hadhan threw a glass flask onto the coals of the fire. Immediately, the fire flared up again as a fearsome blaze, lighting up the camp site in yellow and red and tearing the cover of darkness away that the goblins had been relying on. The goblins covered their eyes, blinded by the sudden flare of light. You saw three in the trees, one armed with a bow.

“Leave none alive!” Hadhan roared, “Or else the survivors will return with more …”

You turn to the nearest group of goblins to you, a group of three …

Hadhan's companions are quick to unleash carnage on their hapless opponents. Farthorn looses two arrows in quick succession, hitting a goblin between the eyes every time. Schni fires a light crossbow, pinning one against a tree. Ingmyr catches one and tears it limb-from-limb like you would a chicken. Against the experienced members of the Black Hounds, the goblins stood no chance with the element of surprise stripped away.

You take a moment to observe your own enemy. Two goblins were armed with slings and one was armed with a short, stone spear. Because the goblins are climbing the outcrop and blinded by the light, range is less of a factor than it would be normally. You can strike as you please.

But that advantage won't last forever. You take the opportunity to open with a strong blow ...

Anyways back to your irregular scheduled programming ...

You lunge out with the tip of your falchion. While the point of your blade was wide, it was more than sharp enough to pierce an unarmored target. A Goblin slinger finds itself nearly decapitated from your thrust. The two remaining goblins look at each other. After seeing half of their number die, they had no stomach for any more violence. They turn tail and flee. But Hadhan had said to not leave a single goblin alive!

The Goblins try to run away. But their legs are short and you are faster. You run them down before they can make it to the forest. It only takes a swipe of a falchion each to dispatch them …

--CONCLUSION--
4/4 Goblins KILLED Good job on your first lethal fight anons.

================================================================================

“Good job.” Hadhan says, patting you on the back, “Now I know you can actually fight. You’d be surprised by how many men can’t even fend off goblins.”

“So, does that mean I’m blooded now?” You ask.

Hadhan laughs. “Ha! A fine jest. But you have to do more than be able to kill goblins to be a blooded member of the Black Hounds …”

The others are dragging the goblins onto a pyre. Now you understand what Ingmyr had gathered all the firewood for. Farthorn had drawn his dirk from his belt and was cutting off the right ear of every goblin.

“What are you doing?” You ask as you watch him slice off the ear of a goblin you had dragged onto the pile.

“In some places, they pay ten coppers for every goblin ear you bring them.” Farthorn explains. “I’ll smoke and salt them and make a pretty penny or two with these.”

You glance at the other members of the party, who were conspicuously not cutting off goblin ears.

“I’m not so poor as to need to lug flaps of skin miles for coppers.” Hadhan says.

“Bodies of enemies should be respected.” Schni insists.

“Besides, lopping off parts from dead bodies? That’s butcher’s work ...” Ingmyr says.

>You’re a butcher and you could stand earning a pretty penny.

>Even if they’re just goblins, lopping off their ears feels too much like desecrating bodies.

Hah jokes on you I am a butcher.

You shrug and pull a goblin off the pile, drawing your hunting dagger. You were a butcher and you could use a pretty penny. You had spent too much time in want to turn your nose at a sum of money, no matter how small. Besides, the ears were almost weightless. You’d string them up and wear them around you as a bandolier or something.

“So, how do you smoke them?” You ask Farthorn as you watch him feed some herbs from his satchel into the fire that made it burn thickly with black smoke.

“Trade secret.” Farthorn replies, “Although, for the price of fifty coppers, I might smoke them for you.”

Fifty coppers? Dividing up the twenty dead goblins between the two of you, that was nearly half the profits you’d get from them at 10 coppers an ear …

>Sigh and pay up. That’s still a profit of 50 coppers for you.

“And I was the one who caught those rabbits.” Farthorn replies, “And I built the fire you cooked them on too.” He was completely unmoved by your appeal.

“Enough talking.” Hadhan growls. He looked up at the sky. “It’s only a few hours away from morning. Rest, smoke your goblin ears, just don’t make enough noise to keep me from sleeping.”

You look around the campsite. Farthorn was stringing goblin ears up. Schni was sitting down, leaning against a tree, cleaning her stiletto. Ingmyr was already fast asleep, not even bothering to clean the blood from his clothes. Hadhan was taking a sip from his skin of wine. It was a moment of peace, the calm after the storm. You wonder if the ambush on the caravan will be more or less violent …

“Who’s taking first watch tonight?” You ask Hadhan.

“Me.” Farthorn answers from the campfire, “I don’t sleep too much.”

“Don’t know why you even ask.” Hadhan laughs, “You’re a good cook so you wouldn’t get any watches in my little band anyways.”

“I caught the rabbits.” Farthorn interjects.

“Any fool with a crossbow can catch rabbits.” Hadhan snorts.

Lying down, you touch your head back to your sleeping roll. You only notice then that your heart was still pounding. The air is still heavy with the smell of goblin blood. It is only barely harder to fall asleep than before …

……
………

You’re awakened by a boot in your calf. Hadhan.

“The morn has come. Get up, brother.”

You groan as you get up. You hadn’t even noticed you had fallen asleep. It didn’t feel like it either.

The Party quickly eats breakfast before packing up with a practised ease. Then, you were off again, hiking through the Untilled Woods. As you walked, your tiredness cleared away. In the morning light, the woods seemed safer, less alien.

It only took until lunch for you to reach the edge of the Untilled Woods. You could see fields and pastures in the distance, although no houses. On the side of the road opposite the forest was a ditch..

“To be honest, I didn’t expect such quick progress.” Hadhan muses. “Farthorn, go down the road and signal when you see a caravan coming. Ingmyr, go up ahead so we can pincer them. The rest of you, hide yourselves. I want to take them fast and I want to strike at the right moment so that we’re as close to the armed guards as possible.”

“How will I recognize the right caravan?” Farthorn asks.

“Any caravan bearing Visihrod’s sigil will do.”

Farthorn disappeared into the forest, walking parallel to the road behind the treeline. Ingmyr walked up the road until he was over the crest of a hill. Could he really charge from that far away?

And now there was nothing to do but wait. You kiss your idol for luck, check your gear one last time. Then, it comes. A birdcall you’ve never heard before. The signal. Hadhan moved immediately, rolling into the ditch and covering himself with his cloak. Schni disappeared behind the forest’s treeline. Which left you …

Would it be OOC for Joseph to push for having to do a watch turn too? Both to lighten the load on the others and, more importantly, to prove to himself he's not just coasting on being a cook and butcher.
I feel like he's the kind of guy that, while he understands distribution of duties, doesn't want to be treated any better than the others and doesn't skimp off work.

Our two highest physical stats are Toughness and Strength. People who want the ranged fight from the trees are actively sabotaging our chances at doing alright, because we won't hit anything from range, we'll be forced to try an Agility action to get in close and probably get hit by the enemy's archers, and then we'll be moderately better off in our chances in this fight. I ain't up for wasting 3-4 actions just because anons want to try out a new toy that we don't have the skills for.

The crossbows deals all of d5 damage. We can deal almost that amount with our fists, and using our better stat to boot.

You hide in the ditch with Hadhan. You’re not as camouflaged as him but he raises no comment so it must be fine. It isn’t long before you hear the rumble of a caravan passing by. The ditch is deep and a distance from the road and even so close by, no one in the caravan notices you. You catch glimpses of wagons marked with a sigil of cross scimitars over a shield, caravan drivers, a few armed town guardsmen …

“Now!” Hadhan shouts.

You and Hadhan leap out of the ditch, weapons drawn. From the forest, a quarrel flies, spearing a guard in the arm. Schni follows closely behind, her dagger drawn in one hand. You scan the crowd. Three wagons. Three caravan drivers, some armed. Two town guards wearing chain hauberks and armed with spears. A mounted man, possibly a knight, who was shouting and trying to rally the caravan. Hadhan was charging the knight and Schni was engaging one of the town guards. Which left you either the drivers or the other armed guard …

I am retconning the guard to be wearing an iron helmet instead of a hauberk to make life easier for you and also because I’ve decided I don’t want Joseph running around in chainmail armor just yet. You could use a helmet though.

The caravan is taken completely by surprise. You see Hadhan swing his broadsword at the rider, knocking him off his horse. You see Schni climbing the guard she had engaged, straddling his shoulders, her dagger drawn back. In the distance, you can hear a guttural roar as Ingmyr charges over the crest of the hill, his battle axe drawn …

Combat: Visihrod Town Guard, Middle Range.

You observe your enemy. He was dressed in a gambeson and clutched a short spear. At his side hung a shortsword. His helmet was a good piece of work, conical and with a hanging collar of chainmail. His master must have been quite wealthy to equip his guards so.

Seeing you approach, the Guard swears and quickly brings his spear to bear …

You have the initiative

>>Burn a Fate Point to auto-succeed
>>
>>5055440
>You have 25 toughness and a spear on a crit after a strong attack only does 20 damage. You can take it.

Anons should live with their bad decisions. Also, given that Fate Points gain keep slowing each point gained, it means that we're better off hoarding the Fate Points rather than burning them, and that when our Common Decency trait starts failing as a Fate Point generator (probably between 5-10 decisions for a single Fate Point), minting new Fate Points will become a rare occurrence.

Also, if we take the spear hit, can we attempt to drag the guy forward into our range, or deprive him of his weapon? I'm just curious at the feasibility of turning this attack around on the guard.
>>
>>5055449
>if we take the spear hit, can we attempt to drag the guy forward into our range
No, you'll be too busy gasping in pain. The 'tank the damage for a chance at the enemy' is the Toughness Action.

I know for a fact that we'd definitely be in a better position, or at least be as competent as our allies at the bare minimum. >>5055774
Run the math my dude. Unless OP meant to start the knight off with 50 stats and another +20 in gear then anything past easy is still unlikely.

>>5055799
We ran the math and you yourself agreed it is very unlikely to pass checks past easy.
>>
>>5056104
I would hope the min for physical stats would be buffed to 20 instead of 10 for the warrior rolls, and I'm certain that certain backgrounds would have certain other buffs or techniques that would've been neat. Otherwise you get the problem that a peasant with no formal combat training would be able to beat a trained warrior in a fair fight, which is just ludicrous, and the 'different' warrior classes to be just flavor instead of mechanically different to denote to difference in fighting styles and philosophy.

As a untrained peasant, I agree. But as we gain experience and our stats aren't as shit, we should get better over time. It's why it's intuitive- you don't expect to be the best straight out of the gate, and as we slowly build our character up, we'll be less shit at everything, even the medium and hard rolls, if we live long enough to see it that is.
>>
I hope people realize we're tied between agility + strength and just agility, and not under the impression that they are all voting for the same thing.

>>5056104

>>5056113
There would definitely have been differences in philosophy. Starting gear would also be different.
>>
>>5056113
Run the math again. Even if we had 20 base and boosted by a further 10 at level up we would still have a 70% failure chance at an "Easy" task. Never mind the rest. As I said, OP would not give you 50 base at the start and any extra gear would not cover the difference.

I am simply pointing out how you balance things.
>>
>>5055870

>>5056146
Your math is wrong, it's technically Bo3 on Easy. I know it doesn't seem like a lot, but it's a decent chance at success then, and this isn't the system affecting combat, so our odds of success are better than a Task roll. I'm not saying it's going to be an easy ride these next couple of threads, but that doesn't mean that the dice system is faulty, we're just playing on hardcore mode.

And technically it would be 40 if we decided to boost our best stats or decided to burn more Fate Points for extra stat boosts.

Visihrod Guardsman: Defenseless

With you so close, there’s little the guard can do to defend himself against you. You hack down and the guardsman’s gambeson gives precious little protection from your heavy falchion. It chops through his collarbone, before being stopped by his ribs. You roughly pull your falchion blade out.

-- Result --

The Guardsman is WOUNDED

10 x 2 = 20 damage

The Guardsman is SLAIN

As soon as you pull your falchion out of the Guardsman’s shoulder, he collapses over, dying. You had dealt him a mortal wound. He had stabbed you, but you had killed him. You laugh at the thought, but the laughter only causes you a pain in your side.

Suddenly, you lose your balance, collapsing on the ground next to the dying guardsman. Your vision swims, before going black …

……
………

When you wake up, you’re lying on a bed of straw in the back of a moving wagon. Schni is kneeling over you. You don’t have a shirt on.

You try to get up, only to feel like you’ve been stabbed in your side again.

“Don’t get up.” Schni says, “You’ll tear the stitches I gave you.”

Now that she mentions it, you notice your side is bandaged. She must have been checking on your wounds. “You did this?”

Schni nods. “I have a lot of experience patching up hurt people. But Farthorn provided the herbs.”

You wonder what that implies about her past.

“Finally awake, I see?” Hadhan asks, as he walks along the cart.

“What happened?” You ask, trying to get up to face him, before Schni pushes you down again.

“What happened? You passed out from blood loss!” Hadhan laughs. “I should tell you, just getting yourself covered in blood doesn’t mean you’ve been blooded.”

“How long was I out for?”

“Half a day.” Hadhan says. “I’m surprised. An injury like that would put most men out longer.”

“Try to stay still.” Schni advises you. “Move too much and you’ll tear the stitching.”

You nod in acknowledgement.

-5 Toughness until the wound is healed. Wounds are healed at the end of every arc. Some actions might aggravate the wound.

“What happened after I fainted?” You ask.

“Well, we won, obviously.” Hadhan says, “They weren’t expecting an ambush on this route. Too far away from the front lines. Two upjumped town guards and one unarmored knight isn’t any protection for a caravan. Especially for the cargo they were carrying ...”

“Cargo?”

“Weapons and armor.” Hadhan says, “Arrows mostly, some spears. Very strange for these kinds of supplies to be shipped away from the front lines …”

“Did you save any loot for me?” You ask, hopefully.

“None of the supplies would have been things you wanted.” Hadhan says, “Bad quality stuff. Spear shafts as thin as broomsticks, gambesons half-eaten by moths. Barely fit for arming levied peasants, if Visihrod is that desperate. We burned it all and let the fire ruin the steel, not that there was much to ruin.”

“But the guard I killed.”

“Oh, him?” Hadhan dangles a purse in his hands, “Visihrod must pay his men well. Thirty silver pieces this man was carrying on his body. Hung onto them just for you.”

Hadhan presses some coins into your palm. Ten silver pieces. You look at Hadhan.

“Apologies, Joseph. I’d give you the whole purse, but unfortunately I have a love for dicing and drinking and there’s no luck like the kind silver buys. Besides, I said that you could keep the loot you took, but you never laid a finger on this man’s purse ...”

I can't think of a wager that would either benefit us or put Hadhan in equal footing as us. I'm 100% sure Had is going to cheat at dice and with our skill in combat, I don't see us getting blooded in our next fight. Getting wasted it is then.
>>
>>5058620
Thank you for the suggestions. My concern is that doubles being crits would make crits way too common. As for gradations of success, I personally find it difficult to think of enough different outcomes to justify grades of success outside of certain scenarios (although I reserve the right to implement them in those scenarios).

Also nice tripcode. Watcha doin?

I am running the Invultua qst, was partly inspired to do so by your system and story here...!

Also I sort of want to beg for lore about what Joseph would know in character regarding the Iron Kingdom and Urbs Consecratus, though I guess it is yet to be revealed...
>>
>>5058158
Hadhan is using us. His gambling will inevitably drive the group to ruin, and we will always remain the runt of the group under him.

Cut his throat as he sleeps in the night and take back our silver!
(This thought occurs to Joseph as the Faceless Saint somewhere looks on sadly. Wish I had been here for the character vote. Men of negotiable honour embrace the Iron Way of Conquest hehe)
>>
>>5058643
Absolutely retarded.
>>
>>5058652
As a humble butcher the probabilities of us living are brutal. The QM has been merciful with us twice and let us either pass out or (with the prison guard) helped Joseph with an npc. Hadhan trains us but also takes from us to keep us under his thumb. When a real fight breaks out with our stats Joseph will be cut down without mercy. So need to take actions that do not rely on the brutal dice probabilities here. If the rest of the group questions us well prey to the Faceless Saint I guess
>>
>>5058630
I'm flattered to hear I inspired someone! The Iron Kingdom and Urbs Consecratus would be things that Joseph does know of since that's covered under Common Lore: Westerndom, although he wouldn't be familiar with the inner workings of them.
The Iron Kingdom is a kingdom consisting of the northernmost portion of Gothyka that were taken over by a false messiah long ago, where the rightful institutions of lordship were dissolved. Women are held in common, Men are forced to yield their harvests to the crown, Children are taken from their homes. And there's a lot of iron production and fortress building, hence the name.
The Urbs Consecratus is a holy city-state in the region of Traversmont to the south of Gothyka. It's the seat of the Holy Archonic Church. The Iron Kingdom and the Urbs Consecratus do not like each other, and unfortunately Gothyka is in between the two. That's all that Joseph knows. How much of it is accurate, Joseph can't say.
The thing with setting lore is that it's hard to tell how interested people are in it.

>>5058652
>>5058675
This is a valid option. Whether it's the best option to take is for you guys to judge.
>>
>>5058964
Thank you Noir! I am very interested in the setting lore. Hopefully it does not turn full grimdark...

Just a hint of suspicion that Hadhan who is described directly as "black-souled"
>>5023444
seems to be hiding something from us. Unsure if innate to our own heritage or if it is just the Grenzheim-Visihrod "tax dispute". We are the aggressors here in this land

>>5031687
>So you’d be bringing war to a previously peaceful part of Gothyka. Part of that sits uncomfortably with you, but such was the way of things.

so Joseph even with his in character naivety knows this. In between the d100s bashing and stabbing and loot lust we need to be on the lookout for these questions here:

>>5033010
>But why march so far to raid lands away from the war? What started the conflict between the two Lords in the first place? And of all people, why had Hadhan recruited you, a barely trained former butcher?
>>
>>5059038
I feel we always can be thrown under the bus as a scapegoat if anything goes wrong.

I mean, who's going to listen to some random commoner butcher?
>>
>>5058964
I'm actually interested in the lore as well, so just keep it sprinkled around.

>>5059038
Hadhan is obviously hiding something from us- our salary.

Beyond that? We all have our secrets, and are entitled to our privacy.

As for the questions, those are easy. To disrupt the supply chains and get some fat loot, something political that's beyond our paygrade, and to be his meat shield, because we obviously ain't good for much else.

>>5059068
That would explain why he's hoarding our salary, but I honestly think it's because he needed more men in his unit.
>>
We know that Schni has history with Hadhan, according to his account
>>5039696
they trust each other with their lives. Also this section:

>>5037640
“A loan like that would put a man into debt for a decade.” You say, “Besides, I’m from the Eastern Frontier. We don’t like other men claiming to own our hard work like a guild would.”

“I can understand that.” Schni whispers, “Not being beholden to another.”

Hopefully Hadhan is not using some nefarious means to control her.

We also know that Schni knows a lot about the legends of Myrkalfgard, Kathyrn Eisa and the dark elves.
>>5038504

Back at the Untilled Wood we appeared to possess some power of premonition of impending attack before the others (not sure if granted by the Faceless Saint, bless her)
>>5034666

Perhaps Hadhan knows of this and it is why he has brought us along.

There is also a lore section here on the Ilian Empire and Beastmen (I assume this is just for our enjoyment and Joseph knows none of this history)
>>5033003
>>
>>5059347
The ‘nefarious means’ would be in direct conflict with the ‘trusting each other with their lives’ bit. It’s either debt, obligation, or having no where else to go that keeps Schni here. Keep in mind, ‘Not being beholden to another’ may reference something else in her past that’s unrelated to Hadhan.

As it relates to the Untilled Wood, I don’t think it’s premonition that we have, but the general vibe the wood gives, or if we do have premonition, we aren’t alone in that power.
>>5035678
“You notice it too?” You ask, gratefully accepting the beerskin.

“Dokk Ein be damned, my hair’s been on end ever since setting foot in this forest.” Ingmyr curses.
>>
>>5059412
You are correct but we heard "the trusting each other's lives" bit from Hadhan's account only (unless I missed something or just overthinking it lol). Schni is quiet and we have chosen to respect her privacy for the time being. We could perhaps speak to Ingmyr or Farthorn more next time to ask for a corroboration of Hadhan's character. What happened to his men under his command previously, does he leave his men behind to die when the time comes etc.
>>
“The next time we’re in a town with a tavern, we’ll have a drinking competition. Winner takes all.” You propose.

Hadhan rubs his chin. “That doesn’t sound like half a bad idea. Very well, you have your wager. You can have your silver for now, but be warned that even if you spend it, you’ll have to present your share if you lose this wager.”

Hadhan places a stack of silver coins on the cart.

You have gained 15 silver. You now have 65 silver.

The cart has been traveling down the road for some time. You’ve since grown used to your bed of straw on the carriage. You find it almost comfortable. At some point, Hadhan climbs onto the cart with you.

“Where have Farthorn and Ingmyr gone?” You ask.

“Farthorn’s scouting ahead. Ingmyr’s lagged behind so any pursuers will find him before they find us.” Hadhan explains.

“We’re not going back through the Untilled Woods?”

“No, I have another location in mind. A closer refuge.”

Hadhan doesn’t elaborate. You don’t feel the need to ask more. You’re sure Hadhan knew what he was doing. You have a feeling that if you stayed closely behind this wily bastard, you wouldn’t find yourself in any situations with no escape.

The cart travels on for some more time. In your position, you have nothing to do but watch the road recede behind you. It’s starting to grate.

“If getting stabbed and still killing my opponent doesn’t get me blooded, what will?” You ask Hadhan the first thing that comes to mind.

“Any bastard you pick up off the street can kill another man in the heat of combat.” Hadhan says, “It takes something more to be able to stand your ground at the front of a formation, to volunteer for dangerous duties, or to kill without question. A man that will do all three, that’s the kind the Black Hounds are looking for. Things standing the way they are, we’ll settle for one with two of them.”

“The rest of the party are all blooded, right?” You ask.

“Some for a long time.” Hadhan confirms.

You sigh. “That just makes me ask why you saw fit to drag me out of that dungeon.”

“Ah, that? Well ...” Hadhan chuckles, “That might be a good question for another time ...”

In the distance, you can hear the sound of a horse approaching. Hadhan pats you on the arm. “You needn’t fret, Joseph. You’ll find a place with the Black Hounds. You’ve got the stubbornness for it.”

The Rider draws alongside the cart. He was dressed in a gambeson, over which was a surcoat emblazoned with a sigil you didn’t recognize. He doesn’t seem to be a knight, so he must be a trusted retainer.

“Hadhan of the Black Hounds?” The Rider asks.

“Aye.” Hadhan says.

“We have been expecting you. Your man, Farthorn, informed us of your approach. Welcome to the domain of House Zuflucht.”

Since anons expressed interest in it, I can give an overview of the immediate surrounding kingdoms that Joseph knows of.
The Iron Kingdom and Urbs Consecratus are already spoken for.
Also in Central Westerndom are the Etrian city-states, a mercantile seafaring culture with a monopoly on the spice and tea trade. They're on a peninsula to the south of Gothyka bordering Gothyka and Traversmont. Etrians have a reputation of being merchants, food-loving, and quick to answer insults with the rapiers they favor.
To the East, nestled in the Cloudbreaker Mountains is Dwarfhome, the ancestral home of the Shortfolk, most notably the Dwarves. All varieties of shortfolk have sizable populations in Gothyka, particularly in large cities. Dwarves are known as stubborn and industrious. Their metalwork is considered the best in the world, but there is a saying that dwarves do not work any finer than their thumbs in regards to the size of details.
Within the borders of Gothyka itself is the accursed province of Carnia. Something terrible happened to that province and now it is said that the very soil is corrupt. Beastfolk run rampant, heretics find refuge in it's woods, and the worship of the Old Gods is renewed. Few dare enter into it's borders and there are knightly orders dedicated to making sure nothing comes out. You don't say the name of Carnia without making a quick prayer to your deity of choice before or after.
Those are all the kingdoms in Central Westerndom, but there are other kingdoms that border Gothyka that Joseph would know of. The Nordfjords are a harsh and cold land across the sea to the north of Gothyka. To the west is Elvenesse which is home to the reclusive Elves. There are many more minor kingdoms, as well as vast amount of untamed land not settled or to harsh to live in. But even if that was not the case, Gothyka is a large land and the borders are far away. It can be hard for a commoner to know much about their neighbouring fiefdoms, let alone foreign countries.

As for the next update, I'll post it when I can motivate my lazy ass to finish it. It'll be no later than tomorrow, I promise.

The thing I was confused by was examining the dice setup you have here I would be worried about any checks because Joseph is so low level and the probabilities etc. So if it is the case that if we "die" it is a cut to black noblebright situation or eventually it is going to be no mercy and we lose like a hand or something. The Ilians are pretty well known by the Gothyk as having existed. Particulars about them are less well known. You glance at Hadhan in surprise. He only smiles in response. “My old friend remembers me.”

“Indeed, our Master does.” the Rider replies, “They said you had a wounded man? We have prepared a cart for him so that you may abandon yours ...”

In short order, you’re moved to a fresh, unmarked cart. To Schni’s disapproval, you ask to sit up now that you’re awake. After traveling a distance down the road, you stop so that Ingmyr has the chance to rejoin you. Some time later, Farthorn appears from the treeline to rejoin the party as well. The cart moves into what seems in all appearances to be a well-populated domain, dense with fields and toiling commonfolk. At first, it scares you riding openly, but you quickly relax when you realize no one pays you any heed. Sitting upright causes your wound to ache so that you rub it, but you would not be able to stand lying down for any longer. You wonder if this one will leave a scar.

In the distance, you can see a Keep. Not a smallkeep, but a fully fledged one with masoned stone walls rising up five stories to a crenellated wall, Potentially the seat of a Minor Lord. It is clear that the keep was where the cart was headed. But to your surprise, instead of approaching the front gate, the Cart swings around off the path and into a surrounding woodland. Out of sight from the Keep, you descend a slope to the bottom of a cliff that took up a side of the hill the Keep sat on. Set into the cliff walls was a set of double-doors wide enough for the cart. A hidden entrance?

Past the doors is an empty cellar. A man in fine clothes is waiting inside.

“Master Hadhan?” He greets Hadhan with a respect you’ve never heard a castleborn give a sellsword before. “I am Caelan, chief steward of Lord Zuflucht. My Master has entrusted me with welcoming you and ensuring things go smoothly.”

“Thank you.” Hadhan says, “No one knows the Black Hounds are in this keep?”

“As far as anyone knows, your party will just be another group of sellswords my Master has taken on temporarily.”

“Perfect. And when will I be able to speak with Augustin?”

“My Master is holding court right now and won’t be able to see you until after he is finished. In the meantime, your party has been promised full access to the keep. Would you like to be shown your accommodations?”

“Some cellar or stable?” Hadhan laughs, “We don’t need a tour for that. Show me the battlements and the gateroom …”

You follow Hadhan up a spiral staircase which leads into the keep proper. At the top, Hadhan turns to the party.

“It’s been a while since we were out of the country, and it won’t be too long until we’re back in it again.” Hadhan says, “You heard the Steward, aye? Enjoy the castle why you can. No need to follow us ...”

You find yourself free with the rest of the party …

>>
A rumble from your stomach decides your next destination for you. It’s been a while since you had a proper meal. You had been starving for a week in that dungeon and while you had eaten since then, field provisions and something cooked over a campfire weren’t substitutes for a true, hearty, kitchen-cooked meal.

Searching for a kitchen, you get a good feeling of the Keep. It was small by the standards of a lord, perhaps being able to house fifty men. You think you would find it cramped if you had to live here for very long. But as a place you’re staying temporarily, you’d take it over a drafty hut in a village.

It doesn’t take you long to find the kitchen. All you had to find was the Main Hall and it would be directly connected. Inside, you find a dozen women busily preparing the next meal. Flour is being kneaded, sourdough bread baked. You see a spit with a row of chickens on it roasting in the hearth. One of the women working, a stout, matronly woman, notices you and approaches.

“We don’t serve outside of mealtimes.” She says.

“I’m sorry, but I’ve been traveling for some time and this will be the first proper meal I’ve had in weeks. Could you have mercy on a starving man?” You try to explain.

“Starving man? Does this look like a damned tavern to you?” The Woman swears, “I’ve got fifty-six mouths to feed three times a day, how’s that for ‘starving’? Now leave me alone, I’m very busy …”

“I can work for food.” You offer.

The Matron raises an eyebrow in doubt. “A man, working in the kitchen with the womenfolk? That’d be a sight to see.”

“I promise I’ll work.” You insist, “... “After I’m fed.”

The Matron narrows her eyes. “Make yourself useful first. Then we’ll see about feeding you.”

She walks away, apparently too busy to give you more instructions. You look around the kitchen to see where you would be useful. Naturally, your eyes fall on the butcher’s station. A young woman was stationed there, busy dicing a thick cut of beef. It seemed that you’d be having beef stew tonight. You had a liking of beef stew. The only problem was that she was doing so with a much smaller knife than she should have been. From the way she held it, you could tell that she was afraid of the blade. Moreover, her cuts were uneven …

Have to constrain the historical autism for fantasy because where does it stop, e.g. all the posts referring to potatoes etc for meals well potatoes did not exist in medieval era until after the discovery of the Americas etc. (so if potatoes exist, so should guns...) Peasantfolk women would probably prepare meals but any lord / manor would likely have male cooks, stewards. You can see the contrast feel in this by comparing an older fantasy novel like Mervyn Peake Gormenghast (cook Swelter and all kitchen scullions are male) with more modern fantasy novels like Tad Williams Dragonbone Chair (cosy, female kitchen cook scenes etc)
>>
>>5064924

>>
>>5065113
haha no need to do this (it is your fantasy setting after all). Maybe the male kitchen workers were conscripted or killed in battle or something, and women replaced them?

I just find it amusing how there is so much anachronism in fantasy convention nowadays people are not even aware how completely different social roles, nuances and behaviour back then used to be. In 1000 years time people might think Jane Austen had tiktok after all the history has just melded together

“If you don’t want to cut yourself, you chose the wrong job.” You tell her. It feels strange to repeat all the lessons you were taught all those years ago. You weren’t even a butcher by trade anymore and here you were teaching someone to be one. “Here, I’ll show you how it’s done.”

You take the cleaver and bring it down onto the slab of beef, cutting more in one stroke than the girl would have managed in five. In a few strokes, you’ve finished the slab of beef and it is ready to pour into the pot. Over the next half-hour, you instruct her in how to use a cleaver.

“Raise it higher so you can bring it down with more strength. Curl your fingers so that you won’t cut the tips. Keep the blade straight, you can tell how straight it is through the handle ...”

You have to say, she takes to butchery more readily than Schni. The two of you quickly go through her work for the entire day. You lose track of time in the rhythm of the cleaver until another girl taps you on the shoulder.

“The Head Cook told me to bring you this ...”

It was a bowl of beef stew, with a few onions floating in it.

You smile. Your favorite.

“So how do you like my stew?” The Matron asks you as you dig in. It’s your first hot meal in more than a week and is naturally delicious.

“It’s hearty.” You say, “But the meat is sloppily cut. I don’t think it boiled evenly.”

The Matron snorts. “Men never appreciate a woman’s cooking.”

You shrug.

>If she’s the head cook here, she should know a fair bit about the castle. And you have a few questions for her.

>You have nothing to say to her

“So all this …” You gesture at your soup, “Is under the hospitality of Lord Zuflucht?”

The Matron scowls. “You’re in my kitchen, so it’s under my hospitality.”

“Very well.” You acquiesce, “But I still don’t know much about my hosts … either of them.”

“I’m just an old woman with too much work.” The Matron grumbles, “But our Lord Zuflucht? He’s quite the interesting character. Only moved into this keep a few years ago. Saw the siege that took this keep with me own eyes although me and my husband didn’t work here then. Lord Zufluct hasn’t mistreated and that’s all we commonfolk can ask for, isn’t it?”

You nod. You couldn’t really sympathize. On the frontier, your liegelord had always been far away and since then, you had always been a vagabond, moving from domain to domain. You couldn’t understand living in one plot of land, your life ruled by a single man.

“So have you heard of the Black Hounds?” You ask.

“A band of sellswords, is it?” The Matron says, “And a big one at that. They’re all brigands, sellswords, every one down to a man. But the Black Hounds are in the tales more often than the others ...”

That sounded along the line of what you knew about the Black Hounds. You finish your meal.

“I admit, your hospitality warms the heart.” You say, “Especially when it is in the form of a hearty stew.”

The Matron snorts, half scowling and half smiling. “So much for the meat being uneven, eh?”

“I have come to appreciate it.” You simply say.

The Matron laughs. “Well you certainly made yourself useful for it, I’ll give you that.”

“What other hospitality can I look forwards to?” You ask. “This stew was delicious.”

“One of the Goodwives here can bake an excellent Etrian flatbread with sausage toppings.” The Matron says, “I was surprised when I learned she could make something so exotic! The Master has a liking for it. Maybe you will too.”

“I’ll look forwards to trying it then.” You say.

Alright, another section would not be able to conclude before the thread dropped off the board so this seems like as good as any of a place to end the thread. I'll probably take a break for a few days then start thread two.

If possible, I'd like to hear what you guys thought about the quest so far. It means a lot to me what my players think.

But above all, thanks for playing!

Your characters are really good Noir - I really admire your writing style! There is that classic fantasy companionship feeling to this world and your narrative which is often lost by others nowadays. Did you build this world independently or is it part of an ongoing campaign?

The brotherhood or rogues, as Hadhan calls it. I'm glad I can do something uinque! Although there was definitely a sense of Brotherhood in Forgotten's work too I think.

The world was built for a story, but it wasn't the kind suited to having a quest in so this is about a random, normal character in that world.

I said this before in another thread but qst is surprisingly powerful. Like these days despite Unreal engine graphics and advanced shaders and unity engine etc or AMZN Wheel Of Time budget lol I am more invested in this text thread than those productions lol. I would be interested in hearing your fantasy inspirations (novels, films or ttrpg campaigns etc) because these days there is so much out there but strangely they just never seem to capture the classic fantasy atmosphere for me, there is always something a bit off about them.

I think for a quest about traveling mercenaries, it's pretty obvious that Berserk is a pretty big inspiration. Warhammer Fantasy is also one, for all the lack of love it's been getting from GW nowadays. Questwise, I was always inspired to run them by Sworn to Valour, Ouro's stuff, and that one Barbarian Warlord quest from a while back. So some inspirations if not outright plagarism might surface from those.

As for the other influences, see if you can spot them as the quest goes on!
>>
Thanks for running man, really want to figure out Schni's deal. See you next thread.
>>
Thanks for the run. I eagerly await for the next thread.

As for criticisms, I don't really have any. Any problems that we had were from anons who wanted to play an untrained commoner and realized that we weren't clapping cheeks left and right.

So what your saying is that if Joseph becomes a huge badass, he might get a cameo in this story.

A solid first thread, ignoring our atrocious fighting skills when we have to roll. I look forward to next thread.
