/qst/ - Quests

Gaol Quest: a text adventure occasionally illustrated.

For your various (alleged) crimes against the Eternal Empire, the High Magistrate had sentenced you to life, and thrown you into the Gongalla Gaol: the pit of despair, the mistake of architecture and magic, the continent-sized holding facility. Thankfully, as per the required humanoid decency act, you are issued your mandatory spoon... for what good it does.

¡MIENTRAS TANTO!

You are Petunia Karachova, an ex-serial non-consensualist whose crime was so heinous, that you were sentenced to Gongalla Gaol. Despite your descent into depravity, a romantic encounter with a fellow inmate by the name of James Calaca had changed your life. Together, you traveled and met new friends: the plucky goblin Gobson G. Gobson and the ambulatory yet amnesiac(?) crash test dummy who James named Sierra. Your long-term goal is to eventually marry James, and while James wanted to escape Gongalla, you are content to stay together until the end of time - wherever that might be.
After recent adventures, you've landed in Gobson's hometown of Goblinton. After helping returning the Necrologue relic from of one of your former victims back to the hands of the necromantic nuns from the Church of the Eternal End - also known as the Crossbones - the town is under imminent attack by the Black Badges, a faction of highly augmented former Enforcers and soldiers of the Eternal Empire. And also apparently, the mysterious Dead Numbers has sent agents to infiltrate Goblinton and acquire the Necrologue. You thought you were safely in shelter with the nuns, but a former traveling companion has just teleported in: Frank, the formerly junior Wardenbot. His teleportation sigil incidentally also exposes a thuglike Dead Numbers agent, hiding behind a box.

The figure stood in the center of a dissipating circle of magical energy, the formerly disembodied Wardenbot by the name of Frank. "Now now, as much as I'd like to display the strengths of my newly acquired body, I'd like to avoid unnecessary harm. So please, hand over that relic you call the Necrologue, and in return I will not lay a finger on any of you, myes?" That smug smile never left his face.
Sister Beryl and Sister Delarue takes battle stances, even when they (and you) are in a magical protecton circle. "We will not simply hand over one of our sacred relics to blasphemers and infidels. By the Ulnar Texts, we will not hand it over!"
The hulking mass of muscles that had no business being that stealthy stood up from his now-destroyed hiding place. "Hoo, fisticuffs, is it? We Dead Numbers also be needink the Necrologue. I never say no to fightink." He dusts off his hands, the seemingly simple movement feels quite powerful.
In your own inventory, you have your versatile spoon, several Magitech cards you could charge mana into to cast spells of varying modularity, two nutrient blocks and a secret memento. It is obvious that fighting is about to commence, what will you do?

"Hey, Frank! Nice body, where'd you get it?" You decide to distract Frank, it might help the Sisters.
"Like it, Petunia old dear? I should say, the Black Badges have quite a lot of deactivated Warden bots in their arsenal, and quite a few idle machinists in their headqua-" It seems like the Dead Numbers thug is faster then the nuns. A vicious bodyslam impacts Frank, sending him off-guard. An opportunity!

You were thinking about going in the melee with a spoon and attack Frank's joints while he's down, but Frank quickly stabilizes his footing and stance. Within moments, Sister Beryl comes in with a flying kick as fast as lightning - but oh! Seems like Frank had parried it with his metallic limbs! Then, just as he was looking like he's about to fall, the thug swings a powerful punch - that was immediately blocked by an 8-rune defensive spell. Damn, Frank's packing some surprises too, you remember that particular defensive spell was used by the Empire's elite soldiers. Meanwhile, Sister Delarue is about to launch another attack right after Beryl. But wait, hold on: you see an opening that you could reach! Frank's back is wide open, owing to the attacks on his sides and front. There, you can see what looks like a panel screwed shut, and a single bolt on the neck. You think the back plate's connected to his mana reservoir, and you could slap some magitek cards to disrupt him. Or, you can unscrew his neck and rip off his head off.

You've got no time to unscrew his head, and in a flash of inspiration you grab two magitek cards (of what effect, you do not know). Silently, in between a flurry of punches thrown by Delarue and the thug's own barrage of fists, you make your approach - and deliver a slap on Frank's back.
"AAaaRghK!!!" Frank's howl was unlike anything you've heard. At once, small glowing mushrooms sprouted between gaps in his armor and his mouth. "What did you do!? WHAT DID YOU DO!?"
Er, whoops, didn't mean to do that. Then again, that's one down, one more to go. What about the thug?

You point at the thug. "You! Stop and surrender, if you don't want mushrooms up your gut! ...or worse!" You brandish the other three Magitek cards menacingly.
"Interestink! Finally, this fight is gettink better and better!" The thug remarks, and you sense, somehow, an aura of rising flames coming from him. Crap, is he also a magic user?!
"Ahh, frong fhing ho dho, Fedunia!" Frank says, inbetween mouthfuls of glowing mushrooms. "Inmade Whruf- ack, ptooey!" He spits up a gob of luminescent fungi that sprouted with haste. "Inmate Borges is quite the magical masochist. He'll take on and absorb magic, and return the favor, too!" Frank ambles into fighting position, faced with the battle-ready stance of Sister Beryl. Sister Delarue is right beside you, seemingly waiting for something. You slightly notice that she's been breathing in all the while, strange. As if she wants to speak something.

「DANGIT」

The word surges out her mouth, softly spoken yet with termendous force riding behind it. It flew towards Borges as if it is a cannonball, and you distinctly felt the presence of an artillery piece firing when she spoke, despite you covering your ears tightly.
"Shto?! A Banshee?!" Borges tries to resist with his fiery aura, but the sheer force of Delarue's word ended up sending him tumbling and hitting the far wall of the storage room.
You have witnessed the power of a Banshee, it seems.
As the echoes subside, you look around and see the only enemy left standing is Frank, who is currently in a high-speed fisticuffs with Sister Beryl. He's losing out, the mushrooms' growth dampening the amount of mana he can utilize.

Seems like the thug, Borges, is out cold from Delarue's audio assault, so you looked back towards the Sisters' protection sigil and WOAH WOAH WHERE'S THE BOOK?! You frantically look around for a second before Sister Delarue pats you on the shoulder and points at Sister Beryl. Who seems to be doing okay against the mushroom-encumbered Frank, actually. You sigh in relief, and remembered to support Beryl in her fight against Frank.

MEANWHILE

Outside Goblinton, you are James Calaca. Inside Goblinton too, for that matter, but here you are at the town limits. The Black Badges advance party is somewhere out in the northwest, in the cubicle farms. And you're about to meet them face-to-face. "Alright, we ready to do this?" You ask Sierra, Pedro and the motley crew of goblins before you.
"Is this vexillum quite necessary? I feel my maximum velocity might be retarded by it." Sierra wonders out loud, while looking at the white flag affixed to her back.
"We're going in for a talk, we need the flag so they don't attack - or so goes the theory." You turn towards Pedro and the goblin crew. "So, you guys follow a bit back, but try not to be seen. Each of you got your spoon, but don't attack until I give the signal, alright?"
"Yeah yeah yeah, let's just get over it already." Pedro's impatience makes itself known. Time to move.

You and Sierra set off in a walking pace. A good revolution is quick, but a great revolution is inevitable - you remember the Sierra from your past saying that. You also remember her saying that revolutions should be fought for in all fronts, which means diplomacy is never off the table. With determined steps you approach the Black Badges' last seen location - and to your surprise, they are still there. The three scouts from the advance party accompanies a human - which bear a striking resemblance to Pedro - with a prosthetic left arm and a covered left eye. Upon seeing you and Sierra, the Pedro lookalike walks towards your direction, accompanied by a cyborg by the name of Tristan.
"Goblinton messengers, I presume? I am Paulo Rubeda, one of the Black Badges' Section Chiefs. Accompanying me is Tristan-K. May I have your acquaintance?" Wait, Rubeda? This Paulo guy is related to Pedro, then?
"I'm James Calaca, and this is Sierra. We're speaking for Goblinton. Now, we want to know, what brings you here to Goblinton with what looks like a raiding party?"
The baby-faced teenager speaks with confidence. "We're here because we've received reports of a dangerous item which is located somewhere in Goblinton. For the sake of the entirety of Gongalla, we need to make sure it is contained."
"We'll see what we can do. We heard that that isn't the only reason you've come to Goblinton, though." You stare at Tristan and the other goons staying behind.
"Hmm, yes, while our actual business is about the relic, I've heard that one of my long-lost brother, Pedro, might be in town. Also another... old flame, as well. I wanted to speak to them, if possible."
Connecting the pieces in your mind, this 'old flame' would be Petunia. Yet... there were disrepancies.

"Well, some things to clarify first - our scouts told me that there's two humans and three 'robots' approaching, which could also meant cyborgs or heavily augmented dudes. So why do I count only two humans and two 'robots' here?" There, that should keep them on their toes.
Paulo calmly responds. "One of our members went AWOL. As it is, the Black Badges will not be responsible for his actions, nor will we condone it. We now seek for his court-martial. If your side manages to capture him before we do, we will offer compensation for him to be transferred to us." Hmm, sounds like plausible deniability to you. On to the second point, then.
"Alright, we'll be on the lookout for that deserter, then. Now, we actually heard from one of your scouts that your objective is to capture someone named Petunia. Is this correct? If I'm not mistaken, she is your 'old flame', is she not? So are you going to talk, or are you going to catch her?"
Paulo's leaderly facade crumbles for an instant as he leers towards a certain gas-masked figure far behind him, as she hangs her head in shame. "I'm certain that there is... a gross misunderstanding here." He sighs dejectedly. "It appears my subordinates have misinterpreted my commands. The blame is not fully on them, though - matters are complicated. While indeed, I intended to rekindle our relationship, she did do things to me, things that warranted her being sentenced here. I wanted to make sure she had left her old ways behind."
"Hmmm, understandable. Last but not least, did you know anything about the two Dead Numbers stalking about around Goblinton?"
"Dead Numbers?! Here? Hhh, this brings more complications." He pinches the bridge of his nose. "Yes, we knew about the Dead Numbers, that organization of burned spies, martial artists, and disbanded gangs. We, the Black Badges, have clashed with them - they oppose the colonist movement in Gongalla, while we support them. Knowing that their agents are here just brings more headache, though." Paulo then straightens up, and looks at you. "Now, having heard all that, have we come to an agreement? The Black Badges request permission to enter Goblinton to look for a dangerous relic, clues about my brother, and perhaps Petunia, if she's still here. Or do you have more questions?"

"Wait, what colonist movement?" You say, genuinely curious.
"More and more inmates and groups have started to organize themselves, wanting to turn Gongalla into a proper colony of the Eternal Empire. We, Black Badges, support the ones behind the Inner Empire initiative, as well as other groups like the Hivers and the Raptor Riders. Some others want to turn Gongalla into their own country and rally behind the Free Gongalla Republic, spearheaded by the Revolutionaries, the Rebellion, and the Resistance. And of course there are groups who don't want government in Gongalla like the Dead Numbers, and others who are still unaligned." Paulo relaxes a bit. "Personally, I root for the Inner Empire, but if the Free Gongallans have their way, I don't mind. As long as Gongalla's becoming a better Gongalla."
You mull over Paulo's words. Free Gongalla Republic, eh? Sounds interesting. "Alright, you've sated my curiosity, so I guess I'll satisfy yours. Now, I can't promise anything about this relic, but I can take you to Petunia. But just to be clear: Petunia is mine. You do as much as make her cry, I'll make you wish you were back at whatever war you've been through. Got that?"
Paulo's face became surprised, but looks more of a happy kind of surprise. "R-really?! Well, congratulations! But can I still talk to her, though?"
You scratch your head. "Yeah, sure. We got some terms, though: one, keep the rest of your team here. We'll keep an eye on them. Two, you and one 'robot' can come, but your hands will be bound. You good with that?"
"That's better than what we expected. Come on, Tristan." Paulo offers his arms, and motions him to do the same.
You also motioned for Pedro and another goblin to shadow you and Paulo, just in case - hey, what is that goblin doing, trying to skulk off without your permission? ...is that a tail?

"What's the meaning of this?" He says, as the 'goblin' in question tries to skulk away and back towards Goblinton. She took three steps before realizing something's amiss, and turned to look at you.
"Aw, hells." That's all she managed to get out before you give the sign. At once, Pedro and his guildmates pounced at her from above, knocking off her goblin mask! Turns out it's the Dead Numbers imp from before! "Get offa me, you varmints!"
You turn to Paulo. "There's one half of the Dead Numbers problem. Seems they've infiltrated us."
Paulo watches with increasing interest as the fourth member of the goblin squad comes up with ample rope. "Wait, what - is that you, Pedro?"
Oh. Oh yeah. How do you proceed?

"Paulo?! You're alive!" Pablo goes in for a hug. The two Rubeda brothers embrace, tears in their eyes.
"I can't believe it, Pedro, you look just like how I remembered!"
"And you, Paulo! You've grown! How old are you?"
"Nineteen, you?"
"Same! Just that my body's stayed the same... guess it's not the side effects of teleportation runes, huh?"
"Yeah, probably not. Could be the other world's properties, or something. Who did you fight?"
"The Predator Kings, a buncha boogeyman. You?"
"The Mainframe Masters, rogue AI that took over their reality. Won that one."
"Nice! So you're in the Black Badges now?"
"Yeeeah, I am. How about you?"
"Been hanging around with the Goblinton Thieves' Guild, bro. They aren't half bad."
"Ah, so that's how you got in with James here. How's Petunia?"
"Mmm... unfortunately. Uh, she's... still fine. Seems to regret what she did, like I did."
"That's alright, brother, it'll be fine. Yep. By the way, have you seen Pablo?"
"No, I've been searching for him - "
You cough to get their attention. "As much as I like a good reunion, I'll have to cut this a bit short, guys. Diplomatic talks, imp infiltrator, brink of war?"
"Oh, right, right. See you later, bro, and I mean it." Paulo then faces you. "Where were we?"
"Well, we were about to tie you and Tristan up to meet Petunia, but in light of recent events..." You jab your thumb towards the bound imp, "how about we call a temporary truce and do some joint interrogation?" You grin as you look at the imp.
"Oh yes, that would be delightful." Paulo mirrors your grin with his own. The mental games have already started.
"Wh- why are ya lookin' at me like I'm some kinda jackalope? What are ya going to do??" The imp warily asks, concern slowly turning to fear.

>Tetherimp. You tie an Imp up by their tail then you tie the rope onto a pole that's standing out of the ground. "Oh, don't you worry, you just have to answer these questions." You grin, unnerving the imp visibly. Paulo also grins, but it seems like he's observing what you're about to do. "First question:" you say as you shift your footing, "If the bear pope shits in the woods, would the sound be holy?"
"Wait, wha-" the imp is now distressingly confused.
Paulo picks up your game. "How much would a wild wood woot if the woods would wish a wood would woot?"
"Does colorless green ideas dream of violent invisible sheep when it sleeps furiously?"
"I don't-"
"When is beauty like a chance meeting of an umbrella and a sewing machine on a dissection table?"
"Has anyone really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like?"
"Stop i-"
"If there are beings that have evaded or camouflaged themselves from each and every one of our senses - maybe even our existence - how do we know they are real?"
"STOP IT! STOOOOOP! I YIELD! JUST STOP ASKING THESE GOD-DANG WEIRD BULLSHIT!" The imp yells, rivulets of sweat (or tears?) rolling down her cheeks.
Over the next ten minutes, you and Pedro have gathered up a nice intel on the Dead Numbers. Apparently the Dead Numbers also house disgraced mad scientists, but they are rarely seen outside their main compounds. They are an organization oriented towards information gathering and broking, at all cost - although recently the higher-ups noticed something so distressing that they sent agents to gather relics and artifacts.
Their closest safehouse is located somewhat far to the north and slightly to the east of Goblinton. Incidentally, she also gave the locations of the nearest settlements such as and landmarks such as Wreck, Ossuary, Zimmingham, The Black Badges' Isocube Fort, Pyrovores' Pyre, Sunset Cage, and The Crack. The imp seem to be working with a muscular thug, and an adept infiltrator who the imp never saw the face of.
As for her knowledge of Gongalla... it is in a pickle, figuratively. One of the four Dimensional Anchors has collapsed, causing many anomalous fluctuations of magic all over Gongalla. As for the Wardens - they haven't been seen for years now, and rarely do one see a wardenbot outside of Black Badges territory.
Now that you and Paulo have the answers to your questions, what will you do next?

"Alrighty then, get her outta here. See you back at Goblinton, guys." The Goblin Squad heaves the imp (Desi's her name, right?) with minimal grumbling on her part. That thing she said about the third infiltrator is worrying, but you note it down in your mind. Pedro was about to join the Goblin Squad, but you put a hand on his shoulder. "Hold on there, you're going with me to escort your brother."
"R-really?" He seems cautious, but follows behind you as you tie up Paulo and Tristan's hands.
"There. Now remember, when you're with Petunia, you can talk, but don't touch. Got that?"

With Sierra at your side and the others behind you, you walk down the cubicle farms, back towards Goblinton. "Did you notice anything out of the ordinary?" You ask Sierra.
"Nay, these brotherlings are genuine, although that imp has dodged me. Ponder how she passed me. Otherwise, nothing is anomalous." Sierra replied, with a background chatter of the two Rubeda brothers catching up on eachother's experiences.
"Query: permission to speak." Tristan suddenly spoke.
"Yeah, go ahead, Tristan." You turn your head towards the cyborg.
"Acknowledged. Query: paranoia levels rising, is possible cause a concern about Dead Numbers infiltrator?"
"Hmm, might just be. I'm just concerned with Petun-"
A distant explosion cuts off your sentence mid-way. Something in Goblinton caught fire, and even from here you can see Goblins scurrying around and looking for water or casting water magics at the fire. It seems that the fire also made several figures way out in the cubicle farms visible... but it's too far away to ID them. Wait, isn't that the goblin bazaar? And isn't that where Petunia are said to be?
"Oh, shit! Pedro, get your brother to Nanna's hut. No time to waste! Hurry!" You ran, fast as greased lightning, towards the fire. As you arrive, the goblins have put out the fire, leaving only smoke. Petunia walks out of a slightly toasty shop, coughing badly. "Petunia! Thank the Revolution you're safe! What happened?"
Through the hacks and the coughs, Petunia replies. "There was a fight - one of the Dead Numbers snuck in. Strong guy had fire-based magic. You can guess the result."
"You alright? What about the Crossbones?"
"Went down fighting, I think. Dunno where the book was."

Rushing over to Petunia, you give her the once-over. "You sure you weren't hurt? That looks like a big fire."
Petunia waves you off. "Nah, I'm fine, darling. Seems like the roof of the stalls are quite flammable, but burn real quick."
"What about your clothes? Weren't they ripped? How's the bandage?"
"Oh, found me a spare, darling. I wouldn't worry about it."
Satisfied with her safety, you look toward the epicenter of the blaze, which destroyed approximately three stalls before the goblins managed to put it out. It was centered on one of the stalls, which was completely charred and whose leaflike roof were mostly missing. You guess roof insulation has quite the flammable flaw. The soot already had footprints all over the place due to the goblin firefighters scurrying about, you guess. According to the surrounding goblins, the stall used to sell oils. Makes sense... oho, what's this? A hatch! Most of the stalls here have emergency hatches that lead to the wider tunnel network or the underground storage areas. Interesting. And yet... you have this strange feeling you can't shake off. Something's missing.

Where the fuck is nanna, where the fuck did the nuns go, this may just be a distraction, our number one priority should still be keeping the necrologue secure. Also how the fuck is petunia’s clothing intact if she went trough a fire, wasn’t she in the bazaar and not in the shop, and where did she find a spare. She seems quite suspicious.
Also how did the goblins put out an oil fire with water, oil is hydrophobic, only way to extingish them would be with a fire extigisher or some kind of non-water magic.

Then it hits you. Petunia's supposed to be wearing bandages, and more importantly, didn't her hair scrunchie also got absorbed when Mighty symbiosed with her? And her pet name for you is handsome, not darling! Quickly, you turn towards 'Petunia' behind you... only to be greeted with empty air. "What the-" you utter, as you scan the crowd of goblins that had congregated. You turn to the nearest goblin you see, "Hey, did you see any tall woman with glasses and a creepy smile?"
The goblin look confused. "Whatchu talkin' bout, mister? Yous been talkin' to yisself. Is dis some kinna theater?"

You rush to her side, examining her face, meticulous in your check. "Petunia? Petunia, is that you? Oh, thank the Revolution!"
She's not alarmed, but a slight note of concern snuck to her words. "Yeah, of course it's me? What happened, James?"
"I-i-i got back from the negotiation, and I saw a fire at the market, a-and I rushed there, and I saw you there, but it wasn't really you, it just wore your shape... you were on my mind. Thank the Revolution they didn't do anything to you."
"Now that's... a bit creepy. Me and the Sisters beat up Frank and that huge Dead Numbers guy, Borges. We captured Frank, but Borges escaped. Then we got here - the Sisters are in the room next door as we speak."
"Petunia, do me a favor?"
"Yes?"
"What's the name of your symbiote?"
"Oh, the mitochondria? Mighty, why did you as-"
In an overload of joy, you pull Petunia's head closer to yours. Lips parted, a kiss blossomed between you, and both of you dove deep. Subtle gyrations of the tongue, a flourishing of emotions, you offload your worries at that moment and let yourself be swept by emotion. Petunia, to her credit, did not immediately go for the tongue, but rather shyly join you in your dance of lips and tongue. After what felt like an eternity, you release her lips from yours - at which point you realized something's straining against your pants' fabric, lightly poking Petunia on the stomach. You find yourself already straddling over her...
"Petunia?"
"Yes, handsome?"
"Let's do it. Me. You. Now." You feel the urge, and the time seems so right.

You decide to not rush it. There's a hidden art in these moments - so you shift to her side, and kiss her neck slowly. From there, you can feel both of your body heat intermingling; inhale, and you drink deep of her aroma. Aside from her sweetish, rosey odor, you also get a slight whiff of smokey, burnt smell, and the distinctively ozoneish flavor of residual magic. The smooth texture of her neck is only interrupted by the cold and ubiquitous metal of her prison collar.
"You know, handsome, kissing's all good but you c- ooh!" Petunia gets a nice surprise as you slide your hand smoothly up her shirt, and caress her bosom; an unparalleled softness blooming as your fingers trace invisible lines on her chest. By her breaths, you can feel that Petunia welcomes the surprise. "O-ohhh, James, you naughty boy. I suppose I should return the favor..."
A shivering pleasure crept up your spine as she suddenly but surely releases your manhood from its cloth prison and holds it gently in her hand. From up close, you can see how her expression changes from playful, to surprised, to pleasantly surprised as her tender touch roused the beast below.
"Whoa, James! You're packing some serious heat down there!" You don't reply immediately, but your breath sweeps across her ear a couple of times before you do.
"Well, think you can take it?"
"O-of course, James! I-I'm an e-expert in taking d-d-dicks..." Oh my, is there doubt mixed with awe and desire there?

"Hey, Petunia, it's alright to be honest. Let's take it a bit slow, alright?" You assure her with more tender touches and her lightly stroking your trouser snake. "So you've never seen one this big, huh?" you refer to your organ which she handled with care.
"Y-y-yeah, yours is... a marvelous specimen, alright. Is it me, or did it got hot in here all of a sudden?" She's right, the inexplicable heat of lust grows over you.
"Yeah, let's get these off." you start to strip, Petunia following closely behind, until both of you are in your birthday suits. Naked as truth, nothing to hide - only the metallic collar and cuffs remain. Heat rises as surely as your heart rates.
"So uh, here I am, James." Petunia's petite yet tall frame lay before you in all her natural splendor, just as yours let Petunia bask in your erectile glory.
At that moment, she is the most beautiful woman you've held in your hand. "You're beautiful, Petunia."
She giggles. "And you are handsome, handsome."
Nothing could ruin this moment. Whatever intrusion caused by a certain green goblin was quickly forgotten, because now your pillar of manliness wants something more. "Petunia... I want to stick it in."
"Oh, handsome... all you have to do is ask. Come lie with me..." She then reclines on the bedroll, legs parting suggestively. Now fully invited, your erect member enters Petunia. Slowly, gently, this is how a wife is taken. A shiver runs your spine as the penetration is complete. Then, like a storm growing near, you started pumping. Slow and steady, then increasing the frequency until you feel the ol' meat rocket ready to launch. Her hand grips yours, and with an audible moan, both of you finish together.
You and Petunia lay exhausted on the bedroll, basking in the afterglow of the aftermath. "That... that was fantastic, handsome."
"You too." You smile back as you look deep into each other.
You do not know how long you've been copulating, but it seems that it's been some time. Then you remember: you still have work to do.

Then again, you're not really the leader of Goblinton - that's Nanna's business, and between her, Gobson, and the Crossbones Sisters you think they can handle a bit of diplomacy with Paulo and his Black Badges. You're more of an action man, after all.
"James, handsome? Something on your mind?" Petunia asks.
"Not really. I think the Sisters and the goblins could handle a few negotiations with the Black Badges by themselves. We have this moment for ourselves."
"Well, that's a relief." Petunia turns onto her side so she faces you. "Hey, you think I could get pregnant?"
"What, you want to have kids?"
"Maybe when this is all over. I'd like to have at least three kids. I bet they'll have your eyes."
"Yeah, and maybe we'll go live on some backwater town somewhere and be farmers. Once we escape, though."

"Let's go check what Gobson was telling us." You say as you put your clothes back on. "I gotta tell them about the impostor."
"Good idea, hope they aren't at each others' throats up there." Petunia got dressed faster than you did. "Lead the way, handsome."
As you go to the main room, you were greeted by the sight of almost everyone sitting around the room. It never ceases to amaze you how goblin rooms seem to be able to fit them all. Pedro grits his teeth, "The nerve of this guy, why don't you fuck Petunia some more, huh!?"
Paulo chuckles despite admitting defeat. "Heh, it seems like I lost the Petuniabowl, then. James, make sure she stays on the straight and narrow for me, please?"
You nod, as Nanna comments, "Ah, to be young again!"
You'd expect a nun like Sister Beryl to chastise you, but surprisingly she's a-titter with giggles while Sister Delarue just silently gives a thumbs up. "Oh, nothing wrong with doing the sacred act of boning! As long as it's with the wife, of course - so, do you have a good date for the wedding?" Aside from them, you could also see the hulking Dead Numbers thug, Borges, bound with so many ropes he looks like a muscular cocoon; his accomplice the imp, similarly bound, but also gagged; the immobile yet softly glowing body of Frank and his head, occasionally spitting a leftover glowing mushroom; the Warden, sitting propped against a wall, but awake; Sierra and Tristan sitting motionlessly side-by side. Gobson, you reckon, is on another room, judging by the sound of a bottle of lifewater poured directly onto goblin eyes.
"Alright, alright, I get it, we got too loud, yeah?" A slight redness colors your cheeks. "What did we interrupt, and would anyone tell me what we missed, if you mind?"
After a couple moments of attempting to be more serious through coughs, Paulo speaks. "We've determined that the Necrologue isn't considered dangerous, provided that it's retained at the hands of the devout. It really is just a book that lists the names of the dead, and by virtue of it being a holy book to the Crossb- er, Church of the Eternal End, a magical foci for necromancy."
Beryl quickly picks up. "And the most we could do with it is speak to the dead, whose name exists in the book."
Paulo shrugs. "So basically, it is a phone book of the dead."
"It is also more than that! It is one of the key to fixink Gongalla." Borges shuffles himself forward, despite the heavy ropes.
Frank speaks from his corner near the Warden. "Myes, Dr. Borges here has quite the theory."
Borges ignores the disembodied head. "As we know, Gongalla's becomink more and more unstable. The cause, as most of you know, is because of the broken dimensional anchor, da? Necrologue can help."
Paulo scratches his chin in thought. "I can't believe I'm agreeing with a Dead Number, but if what you're saying is correct, you're trying to fix the anchor."
>>
>>5027012
"Da, horosho! Dead Numbers have theory, problem is two: how to fix, and how to find broken anchor pieces. Our experts tell it somewhere near The Crack, but Necrologue helps us findink exact whereabouts." Borges smiles proudly behind his moustache.
Meanwhile, you've been itching to tell about the shapeshifter, but this business about saving Gongalla is getting interesting.

You scratch your head. "How exactly would this plan work? Assuming that we'd help you."
Borges sits straighter. "Ah, Necrologue can call dead people, yes? Then we try callink the architect of Gongalla himself, Jorge Abraxas. He must know how to fix the anchor, or if he not know, he might know who can."
"And what about finding the location of the broken anchor?"
"Usink Necrologue again, we call some more ghosts, those who might be in the same area. Might see it, or ask them to look for it."
"Before we get further I'd like to ask you a question... just who is this impostor guy that's with your Dead Numbers team? The imp said there were three of you. Not gonna lie but that guy can really disguise himself."
The big frame of Borges shudders. "Ehh, not a him. They. It? It just appear on crossroads one day, walkink into main Dead Numbers compound. Wore old time cowboy form, no face. Just says it one of us, now. But nobody bat eyes, most spies in Dead Numbers understand, some demons think it must be prince of hell. Still very creepy."

You turn to the nuns. "Well, Sister Beryl, is this doable?"
"Calling Abraxas is quite possible, as long as the ghost themselves are willing to answer. It's specific enough to be easily called." Sister Beryl shifts in her seat. "The second one, however, is a bit harder. We don't know the exact ghost to summon, and if we just pick blindly through the list, we won't be sure they know, or will look where the anchor would be."
Back to Borges. "So, why haven't you asked the Church of the Eternal End first?"
Borges sighs. "We have been tryink! We try to explain to mother superior, but always get turned at gates of Ossuary. Same rude nun with horns."
Beryl responds. "Ah, that's probably Sister Goneril, she's really zealous about keeping heathens out. Makes sense since she came from Hell, maybe like your friend there." She points to the imp, Desi, who mumbles some choice words through her gag.
You decide to wrap this up. "Alright. So, let's get things straight. The Necrologue stays with the Sisters, have them operate it. That good?"
Sister Beryl nods. "We were supposed to return the book to the Ossuary immediately... but I'd think that saving Gongalla would be an understandable delay."
Paulo raises his hand (wait, didn't you bind him? Well, whatever). "As a Black Badges representative, I'd like to offer our help. We'll escort you and your party. We can't just do nothing if Gongalla is in peril."
"Very well. All of us will fix the anchor, together." You conclude.

You glance at Frank's disembodied and befungaled head, the growing pile of glowing mushrooms have gotten your attention. "By the way, mind telling me how and why those mushrooms keep growing out of you, Frank?"
Frank chuckles before spitting out yet another fruiting body. "Well, that's just the thing, isn't it? Petunia here slapped a magitek card on my back, and these things just... grew on me. Oh my. I have a suspicion that these mushroom are what keeps my head alive, even though my present state of decapitation."
Petunia raises her hand. "Yeah, my bad, handsome. I could try and fix his magitek channels though, with some goblin help. At least stop the mushrooms from growing."
"Okay... back to the topic at hand. I think we should look for more info about these dimensional anchors. As much a genius Abraxas supposedly were, he couldn't have built the anchor alone. We need to find stories about the ones who actually built Gongalla Gaol."
"I believe I can help with that." The Warden stirs. "I am Warden Bianca, I know where to find info. "You'd need to find an observation room, and find its log record disk. It should contain the names of the builders, among others."
"Alright then, I think I know what we should do here." You speak, confidently. "First of all, we need to defuse the situation with Goblinton and Black Badges. Paulo, look for stories about the anchor while you're there. Borges, you do the same with the Dead Numbers, inform them of cooperation. Sisters, I ask you to contact the Church and authorize the use of the Necrologue - while also asking about the anchor. I expect this to happen within three days' time." You then turn towards Nanna and the goblins. "In the meantime, the rest of us, along with goblins, keep a lookout for the impostor shapeshifter, while Goblinton fixes damages from the fire. Warden Bianca should rest and heal up, and Frank gets fixed up. The rest of us gets a 3-day break, do whatever. After three days, we..."

"...we'll reconvene here to share info, and contact Abraxas and the anchor builders." You say, decisively. "By the way, Borges - we're still not sure the Dead Numbers are trustworthy, so while you go contact them, we'll be keeping the imp here."
"Ah, you mean Desi? She'll be doink fine as a hostage." Desi mumbled something that you're sure would make a sailor blush were it not for the gag.
"Alright, if there's no more questions, let's finish up this meeting. Some of you have places to be, and the rest of us either got some downtime or things to do." With a positive murmur, the crowd disperses. Paulo and Tristan wasted no time heading back towards the other Black Badges outside Goblinton; Borges immediately goes solo to the Dead Numbers safehouse to contact them; and the Sisters made small talk towards Warden Bianca and Pedro before setting off towards the Ossuary with the Necrologue.
That leaves you with Petunia, Gobson and Sierra as your main party, with Warden Bianca recovering together with Frank in Nanna's hut. Sensing an opportunity to tease, you lean in to give Petunia a quick peck on the cheek. "O-oh! What's the matter, handsome?" She titters while blushing.
"Nothing, just to make sure you know you're loved."
"Aww, so sweet of you, handsome~"
Petunia smiles, as you peek towards Pedro. Seems like his scowl is worsening while the leer has been upgraded into a full-on glare, complete with daggers. Heh, while it's kinda funny, you don't want to add an enemy right now. So you yell to him: "Hey, Pedro! Where's Desi? Isn't she supposed to be with you?"

"Alright then, we'll hear you out, but not here. We'll meet back at Nanna's hut later. I'm in the middle of a date here."
Petunia, however, disagrees. "Nah, now's fine. I'm curious on what this impostor can do. If that's fine with you, handsome?"
"Oh, all right, let's go, then. Pedro, goblin squad, you're coming too!" They regroup, and follow you, Petunia, and Desi back to Nanna's hut. Once they are properly seated at the main room (seriously, how do goblins make it fit every time?), Desi begins her briefing.
"Alright y'all, listen up! First of all, let's talk about that market fire, 'cuz it leads to the other one. So! If y'all remember correctly, y'all were carryin' me back to Goblinton when all of a sudden, y'all see the stall on fire. Correct?"
A chorus of "Yes" from the goblin squad.
"Strange thing is, I saw that fire too, but I sense it's got a magic aura in it, the same kind that Borges has. But! Y'all know for sure that by that time, Borges was already tied up and unconscious, and already carried here at Nanna's hut. Correct?" She points at Petunia.
"Yep, me, the Sisters, and some nearby goblins carried him, he's heavy." Petunia confirms.
"So, barring one of the goblins here having the exact same powers as Borges - which my interviews suggest they don't - our firebug's most likely the Impostor. Which means, it can copy not only our faces and shape, but it could also copy our magic powers, whatever it is. But even then, it has limits." She raps the floor to highlight this find. "All the goblins who's seen strange folk all confirm that they've seen tall folk like you. Never seen it as a goblin like y'all, or a succubus like me, or a kid like him." She points to Pedro.
"So... how are we going to find it?"
"Gee I dunno, I just gathered the info. Not really the thinkin' part."
Well, how do you plan to catch it?

>Get the G-squad to do surveillance passively

Keep an eye out for any doubles.

Our shapeshifter can copy down quite a bit, but definitely not our memories and habits, like calling James darling instead of handsome. It seems that it could cause some real havoc with false flags, so it might be a good idea to find some way to keep tabs on significant players in the game. Especially anyone who's not a goblin and wouldn't normally blend in (such as ourselves.)

Some kind of secret code, mark, phrase or signal, and making sure all already present aren't the shapeshifter.

"Well, we definitely need to spread this information to the wider goblin populace. We'll do that, and actively search for it as well. Petunia, Desi, you know magic, can you feel traces of it? We're looking for magic that shouldn't be there... or maybe even an absence of magic where it should be."
Desi speaks up. "I reckon I could, what with me bein' a Succubus and all. Used ta track horny an' lonely sorcerers back then."
Petunia nods. "Yeah, I can do that, but my tracking's a bit basic. I'll see what I can find."

>>5035624
>>5035672
It crossed your mind that this Desi could be the impostor itself, feeding you false intel - but with Borges still out of town you decide to keep her close with you and Petunia.
"Oh yeah, we need to make some sort of code or something so that we know we're not shapeshifters..." Petunia mused. "Well, I'm going to call any tall folk as 'handsome', and short folk as 'sweet', how bout that?"
You nod, thinking of your own codeword. "Sounds good, I'll call you 'precious' and the small folk as 'comrade'."
Pedro smirks. "Really, just code words? Watch and learn!" He whistles, and the goblin squad assembles into a strange pose. "Go-go gobsquad, aw yea!" They say in unison. "Just tell us to pose if you want to check, each one of us has their own pose!"
Desi inspects the posing squad a bit before coming to a conclusion. "Weird flex, y'all, but ok I guess?"
Satisfied with your impostor check protocols, you decide to head out. "Alright, then, we'll start at opposite ends of the town. Me, Petunia, and Desi starts on the west side, Pedro and the g-squad on the east, we both go in a counterclockwise spiral, meeting in the middle of the Goblin Market. Along the way we ask as many goblin as we can about any tallfolk they've seen around the time the fire happened until now. Sound good?"
After a wave of nods and yeps, the groups headed out to their designated positions. Once the g-squad is approximately reached their start point, you start walking northwest-ish.

"Let's get going, ladies! That impostor ain't gonna catch itself." You tell Petunia and Desi to start the patrol. For most of it, it was uneventful - the goblins you've spoken to didn't see anything unusual. No other tall folks other than you, Petunia, Sierra, or the Warden were seen. You were wondering if Pedro's team have better luck when you see some tall figures near the market. As your team rush closer, you realize they were... two goblins, in a coat? There's others who are trying out the new look, within the crowd of goblins that seem to be having a good time. "Huh, what's all this, then?" You ask the closest vertical pair.
"Ya, man, if it isn't James Calaca, our hero!" The top one speaks. "We be having a festival, since ye saved Goblinton frum doom. Come, join as, we be having de Tall Dudes Festival!" The bottom one adds, "In case you're wondering, it comes from an ancient custom that dates back to before we goblins were relocated to Gongalla. Even before the Eternal Empire arrived in our world and made it theirs. Back then, goblins sometimes don this disguise to fit in the tall ones' society. Oh, how far had we come!"
Well, this would complicate matters, since if you're asking for 'tall folk' then these double-gremlins could count. But you try to ask, anyways. "Have you guys seen a tall folk that's acting strange? We're looking for a shapeshifter."
"Ya, man. Like dat broke-neck fella on de roof? Looks like you!" The top one points at Petunia, then to a roof behind you. Turning around, you can see clearly, a Petunia with an unnaturally wide grin, and whose head is stuck sideways.
"Damn, that's fucking creepy." Petunia says, before focusing. "Can't feel any magic from it, how about you?" She turns to Desi.
"Me neither. That feller don't use magic to steal your shape then, beanpole."
Well, the question is, how would you pursue it, now? It's perching atop one of the taller structures of the market, just... standing there, menacingly.

"Just to be clear, I'm currently looking at something resembling Petunia, right? From the time before you got clawed by a raptor?" You ask, just to be sure.
Petunia grumbles affirmatively. "Mmm. Do I always look -that- creepy?"
"I reckon the broken neck does that shape-changin' snake a whole lotta ugly." Desi commented.
"Keep an eye on it, I'm going to try something." You say, before cupping your hands in front of your mouth, and yell: "WHAT DO YOU WANT?"
By this time more goblins have noticed the impostor and are staring at it. Then, suddenly, it cracks its neck further, turning its Petunia head upside-down. As it does so, it flops into a kind of crouch, but since it's done the whole other way around it's kind of sickening to see. Then, a voice that kiiinda sounds like Petunia's emanates from its impossibly wide grin. "I want to be YOUoneofYOUpartofYOU." That last word it overlays on top of the other, spoken at the same time. Slowly, its face rearranges, and it speaks again, sounding less and less like Petunia. "I am a traveler. I am a stalker. I am a visitor. I am..." this it says with your voice and face: "LOST."

You were about to ask him some questions when he took the words right out your mouth. "Who are you? Where did you come from? I am you now, so I know things that you know. Your memory is mine, and now my memories are mine. Is it true that I was a Revolutionary? Did I truly believe in the cause? Was I just a violent scoundrel who thought that being a Revolutionary was just an excuse to dispense violence? Oh, the things I've repressed. Was Sierra really like that?" You threw your question about backstory right back at you, in your own voice. Your grin is as wide as can be. "And what about Petunia? Do you truly love her? Or was it just a flash romance, a one-night stand, never an ever after? Tell me." You elongated yourself closer to you, visibly shaken by your questions. How did you know about that?!
Thankfully, you didn't notice that Pedro had finished his patrol early, and is now just hoisting himself up the other side of the roof.

You continue the verbal onslaught. "I am so quick to resort to violence. Why violence? Why indeed? Is it because I feel inadequate in my manhood? Just barely enough to satisfy Petunia? Or was it because I was molested as a child?"
You've had enough of this. "Shut up! Stop with your lies! I was never molested! And I love Petunia with all my heart! Why don't you go get your own identity instead of taking mine and then writing fanfics about it!" You shake your hand furiously at yourself.
That's it, reaffirm yourself, make yourself more defined - you will manifest your stolen identity faster... as a laugh escapes your mouth, so does a feeling of sudden gravity. Huh, you're fast approaching the ground. How could this be? Ah, your friend Pedro, you forgot about him.

You know, it's surprising the impostor didn't try to pull the goading on Petunia. Would have been a much easier target. Could have even pulled the same lines about not being womanly enough to satisfy James, or saying that he didn't actually like her...

Which is objectively false, as he literally had heart pupils, but she's an still fairly insecure nerd so it would have been the more logical target for an impostor. Fortunately this thing doesn't seem to be very logical in general, so it won't really hit anything.
>>
>>5043284
>>5043390
You feel the sickeningly refreshing, old new feeling of falling, the tug of gravity on your mass. The vibrations as you hit the floor in front of you, the dissolution as your identity falls apart around you. Feels like your native freedom, back 'home'. And yet, despite it all, this is not home. You are no longer James Calaca. You are no longer Petunia Karachov. You are not even nobody.

You are James Calaca, and you just saw yourself - or rather, the impostor that tried to take your shape - plummet to the ground, and shatter into a mess of semi-recognizable shapes. Witnessed by shock-stricken Petunia, Pedro, and several goblin citizens, you no longer see the impostor. In front of you lay a quivering pile of barely recognizable features - you can make out eyes, a grin or two, and some limbs, but the identity has given up the ghost. "What the fuck are you??" You yell, incredulous at the things before you.
"I am no longer -" it said in a plaintive whine, "I am not even nobody." The unrecognizable thing gurbled. "Why must I exist in this place? Envy, I envy all of you, with your identities and relationships and lives."
What's this? The more you see it, the more you see an inkling of something. Kinda hard to describe, like a yearning, an otherwordly quality - and somehow, deep in your feelings, you know that this... entity before you is no prisoner of Gongalla. "Petunia, you seeing what I'm seeing?"
She seemed to have to shake whatever effect it had on her off first. "Sorry, handsome, but I'm not really sure myself. Some kind of feeling? A mass of disorganized organs? Something that's not a prisoner?"
"Welp, that's it, then. You're getting NAMED." You state.
It replied with a weak affirmative.
