Welcome to Mega Mercs.

This is a tactical turn based collective game where each player takes on the role of a mech pilot, or vehicle crew. To join read the rule sheet and then select a unit and loadout from the construction rulesheet.

This mission is the finale of a mini-campaign that will help me test a reworked version of the system, so don’t worry about long term progression, feel free to try things out and ask questions.

Once the sat-comm facility had been secured Captain Graves posted guards outside the comms room with strict orders to let no one else in. About an hour later the captain emerged clutching what looked like a portable sat-comm uplink. He seemed distant as if in a trance. When questioned he seemed to snap out of it, his harsh demeanour returning.

“New orders; the client wishes to accompany us on the final phase of the mission. We are to rendezvous with them and advance on the objective.”

That was all he would say on the matter.
The captain had never been a trusting man but even for him this level of secrecy was concerning. He’d changed ever since we entered the exclusion; becoming more manic, more driven, and always trusting in the client. So far the client’s directives had sent us into dangerous situations, more so than the average contract, but just when it looked like we couldn’t fight any longer there’d be a prize; a cache of weapons and supplies waiting at the next objective, enough to keep us going a little longer…

Captain Graves: “This is it, we finish this job and we’re in for a pay day that will keep us in the black for years. Our objective is to escort the client to an abandoned IF research base. Once they get there, they assure us that any potential threats in the area will no longer be problem. I will escort the client myself in my personal vehicle; the gravedigger. The rest of you will guard my flanks.”

Operator: “This area was the site of a major battle back during the Great War, hence all those old timey tank wrecks. Apparently, a meteorite struck the place around 29 years back, just before the outbreak of the Satellite War. An expedition was sent but all further records are sealed. That explains the pre-fab research base and the giant dome.

The area around our objective is full of urban ruins slowly being reclaimed by nature. Sightlines are limited so prepare for close quarters combat or use data links and indirect fire weapons to spot for each other. The rough terrain will limit mobility, especially for tanks. I advise the use of jump jets or dozer blades to mitigate this issue. Alternatively, demolisher weapons can be used to clear a path.”

“Both the client’s assault server and the gravedigger can crush difficult terrain beneath their treads. They will be making a beeline through the forest straight to the objective. You need to ensure that nothing is lurking within the ruins or forests that can threaten them. The client will be riding in a type 2 assault server, callsign: Motherwill. The Motherwill has point defence turrets that will shoot down incoming artillery and missiles. They’ve also got a pair of repair drones so feel free to retreat back towards the client if you find yourself in hot water. Alternatively, you can bring some drones of your own.”

“By rights there should be nothing out here, but the client gave stern warnings about an unknown hostile force being active in the area. They wouldn’t say who it was, only that we be prepared to face ‘exotic energies’ and a ‘creature that can shroud it’s physical presence’. I’m assuming that means energy weapons and cloaked units. Probably another set of advanced autonomous peacekeeper drones… at least I hope that’s what they are.”

“Unfortunately, we didn’t pick up any high spec peacekeeper gear back at the comms facility, but they did have a small cache of drones and active camouflage systems so feel free to get sneaky yourself. Just remember to bring along some detection gear or recon drones.

“Be sure to specify your preferred deployment zone otherwise we’ll just stick you wherever.”

I'm going to leave sign ups open till Saturday or until I get 12 approved players.

I have to assemble a custom sprite for every approved loadout, so I'd rather people take their time and think about their loadout before posting rather than spitballing mutiple builds all over the thread.

Also one thing I forgot to mention that wasn't explicitly stated:
If you take a small drone you can have two: One docked in your drone controller, and one in play at the start at the game. This still means you can only have one active per controller.

Some people have told me about a few discrepancies in the rules so I'm posting a patch here.

After the Kau Kult and Autonomous Defence System I thought I was prepared for the horrors of the zone, but what I saw at the blacksite made all of that look tame in comparison. The orbital strike annihilated everything within the AO. I only survived because the command truck was right at the edge of the blast. I don’t fully recall what happened next, I only have vague memories of driving as far away as I could, staggering dazed through the zone and something about… camels. Somehow I made it to the containment wall on Landum’s border.

And that is my tale. Sometimes I still see them in my dreams, the Revenants, Graves, the Kau Kult, Motherwill, W̸̗̱̤̭̤͒̒̿̓͠ẹ̸̢͖̭͐ṇ̸̽̈̑̿͂͒̆͜͝d̴̤̜̞̈́̍̈̉́͛i̸̛͙̭̣̔̀̑̽͗͝g̴̠̯͍͖̈̎͌̎ò̷̧̳͚͓͇̙́̚̚, all standing under an unfamiliar sky, beckoning me to join them and then a column of light reduces them to dust…

Thanks for playing everyone. And with that the Belated Halloween mini-campaign is complete. I'll admit that I could have done a few things better, but this mission had sort of been sitting in development hell for over a month and I didn't want to end up like Valve and lose the ability to count to 3.

None the less I still learned a few things that will help me balance the game and solidify version 1.0 of the ruleset.

It's hard to aim smoke without a clear point of reference io nthe template. It's also not clear that the template rotates with facing (same with the mines?)

When making a build for Lord I continually wanted more slots (maybe that's how it's supposed to be?)

Smoke's ability to break LOS, felt hard to use - enemies either were so close they could just drive through the smoke, or just shot over the smoke.

Mines also felt hard to use - with range of only 6 I couldn't cover my comrades because enemies didn't need to come closer to get in weapon range. There also was only a few spots on the map where I felt mines wouldn't be missed by the enemy, despite the rough terrain.
