Okay. Focus. You’ve gotten a decent handle on things so far, Peppa. A better handle on the flow of your Ki. You stand atop a large pillar, with Keli nearby and standing atop one of her own, keeping pace with her as the two of you practice slow, precise movements. Soba watches carefully, and in the distance you can sense several other Yardratians doing some practice of their own.

“Good.” Soba comments. “The two of you have synced quite well. What will you attempt next?”

You take in a deep breath, letting your Ki rise, rise higher, and feeling Keli try to match you. “Hey, let’s see how long we can fight in sync as we try to go all out.”

“All right, sounds fine by me!”

The two of you leap, running down the spires, letting yourselves accelerate as you practice. Quick jabs, kicks, dodges, the both of you matching each other’s movements as you get close to the ground. You even switch spires you’re running down a couple times. It’s fairly easy at the start, but as you draw out more and more power, you notice Keli’s falling behind.

Once you both are at the ground level, you can feel yourself on the verge of transforming, but you try to hold it back. It’s… an odd sensation. Normally your body would just burst out with power, but with this better control over your Ki, there’s not quite the same “need” for your body to change. Keli though looks like she’s going to need at least the Kaio-ken to keep following you. Hrmn…

As the two of you stand side by side, Keli in a crane stance and you taking a Turtle School one, you try to keep powering up… but you seem to have hit the limit on the amount of power you can draw upon. Your hair’s flowing and almost spiked up, aura’s taking on a slight golden tint, you’re definitely close to breaking through, but just not quite there yet. However, you’ve definitely perfected the first step. You’ve accessed most of your strength without transforming into Super Saiyan.

“Keli, you power up as you need, and I’m gonna try to match you.” you tell her, giving her a glance. “We gotta work as partners in the tag tournament, right? And you know it better than I do, so lead the way.”

“All right, follow me.” She dashes on ahead, then once you both reach a clearing away from the set of pillars, she creates a ring of Ki with her finger, expanding it until it’s about the size of the World Tournament arena, and finally flings it forward towards the ground. “There we go. That should present a decent facsimile of the ring.” She makes another, even larger one, and sets it on the ground encircling the first. “Peppa, you’ll stand between the first and the second.” she instructs, then leaping into the inner ring. Once there, Soba actually teleports in, appearing in front of her.

“So, you wish to test your skills against another now?” he inquires.

“Yeah. I think we’re both close to our breakthroughs.” she confirms as you hop in where she asked you to. “And besides, we gotta actually prep for the tournament with the rules it plays by.”

“Very well.” Soba powers up, taking a fighting stance of his own as a white aura surrounds him, flowing the strongest around his limbs. “I am ready.”

She brushes a hand through her short silver hair. “Okay, quick succession, Peppa. Tag in when I say, then tag out when I say. Got it?”

“Got it!”

“Good!”

She dashes at Soba, avoiding a palm strike by swerving underneath and going for a crane strike right in the center of his torso. He catches her hand and pushes her back, standing his ground. Keli tries again, this time leaping up and, after avoiding an attempt to swat her aside, goes for a spinkick aimed at Soba’s head. He dodges back, then picks up the pace, moving around the arena. Not quite going on the offensive just yet, but making sure every attempt to strike him is a contested one. All the while, you keep trying to power up, keep trying to move past the wall you feel.

Once Keli gets him a little close to the edge, she calls to you telepathically, ‘Switch!’

Using Instant Transmission, you teleport in front of her and block a punch Soba had ready after seeing an opening in Keli’s guard. With her flipping back outside the inner ring, you give a strong push on Soba, your hair flickering blonde for a moment. While it doesn’t get him out of the ring, it does make him need to dig his heels into the dirt to stop himself. Soba looks to you curiously, guard still up. “A bold strategy.” he comments. Soba then leaves an afterimage as he somehow dashes into two different directions. Ah, Multi-Form. The two Sobas rush you, and you block attacks from both sides of your body.

‘Switch?’ you question, feeling Keli charging her Ki more. And… there is something a little different about it.

‘Not yet. Hold him for just a bit longer.’

Okay, time to do this! You carefully watch Soba’s movements, sensing out where the two might try to strike next. Just need to keep him occupied. One attempts to deliver a quick chop from behind you, and you quickly catch his hand and throw him to the ground. The other attempts a sweeping kick just as you knock the first down, only for your tail to catch his leg and trip him instead. Both flip back up and leave afterimages again, splitting once more. Four Sobas now surround you, but instead of trying to attack separately, they keep dodging around. It takes a bit more effort, but you sense what he’s about to do next as you turn to the side and bring your guard up, stopping his fist as the four reunite into one, your aura flickering gold again. As you try to counter, though, he splits into four again. Tricky.

You move to the center of the ring and keep trying to power up, blocking his attacks, and continuing to try to break through that wall. You’re almost there, you can feel it! You’ve gotten such better control of your Ki now, what else might it take? Well, at the very least, you’re holding your own against Soba pretty well even without fully transforming.

You then feel something… different. A slightly familiar Ki signature, kinda… mixed in with Keli’s. Before you even have the chance to process it, you hear her telepathically call out to you, ‘Heading in! Be ready to switch!’

‘Okay!’ You locate Soba and bait out like you’re going to block again, but the moment he’s about to close in, you speed away and dash backwards. Keli leaps in and kicks his fist down into the ground as you reach the outside of the ring. As you look back at her, you notice her Aura is different. Instead of a normal white, there’s black and red mixed in, giving off an ominous energy… yet one she seems to have completely under control. You can see a harsher look in her eyes, as well, but one that also seems more focused.

Soba moves back, a smirk on his face. “It looks like you’ve been able to achieve what you wanted after all.” he comments.

You look at her again and truly take the time to feel out her Ki. Ah, of course. That’s what you were sensing. She’s using Melee’s shared Ki along with her own. Well… maybe more than that. Okay, you also have a bit of a breather now. What next?

You watch closely as Keli fights Soba, trying to observe her movements and see the flow of her Ki with this new form she’s unlocked. It’s actually quite surprising, it’s a good deal stronger than any other power-up she knows, but you aren’t quite sure what limits it has just yet. There’s part of it that feels… in flux, almost. You start to ponder how exactly she’s using this ability. Melee’s Ki is in there, you can sense that, but is Keli simply harmonizing her Ki with Melee’s, or is there something more to it? Maybe, if it’s like the Kaio-ken…

‘Peppa, come on!’ Keli finally gets your attention. Gah, you were so busy trying to figure this out that you weren’t paying enough attention to the fight! Your eyes lock back to her, and you see she’s got Soba on the ropes!

‘Team combo finish?’ you question.

‘Damn right. Let’s end this in style!’

You watch as she dodges one of Soba’s attacks, a chop that just barely misses her neck. However, he starts spinning his body, building up Ki around it. Oooh, a kind of tornado attack? ‘Keli, get above it, got just the thing! You’ve got that Volleyball Fist technique, right?’ you ask, focusing your Ki into your right hand.

‘Aha, good choice. Okay!’ She leaps into the air, a black and crimson sphere of energy forming between the palms of her hands. “HELLFIRE VOLLEY! SERVICE!” she shouts, launching it upward.

And you teleport above Keli just in time! “SPIKE!” you yell, slamming a Rasenken right into the sphere. It spins as it bolts back down to the ground, right in the middle of the tornado Soba is making, and smacks him in the face! With the sphere detonating, he stops spinning of his own accord and is knocked all the way out of bounds. All right!

Soba doesn’t look too damaged by that, surprisingly, as he pushes himself up and dusts off. “Hahaa, now that was more like it. It would seem your training is going well.”

“I’ll say. Hey, Keli, what’re you gonna call that form? Might I suggest… the Makaioken?” you ask her with a cheeky grin. Your grin fades as you feel her Ki plummet, Keli dropping to the ground hard, body twitching, panting hard. “K-Keli? Keli!”

“Hmm…” The large Yardratian rubs his chin contemplatively. “I would say so. She should stabilize after a day’s rest.”

You frown but nod. “What happened?”

“Her body has not adjusted to using such a massive throttling of mixes spirits. She is still mortal, and while she can harmonize her spirit with the demon she has shared herself with, it takes a toll on her body.” he explains.

Soba bows his head apologetically. “I should have seen this coming sooner. My apologies.”

Pybara shakes his head. “It would not have been as noticeable in the heat of the moment.”

“Still, this is something I should train myself to better recognize.” Soba adds.

You look over to Keli again. Well, now what?

He looks to you and thinks, before smiling warmly. “If you are worried about her recovery, do not be, but this may be a good learning experience for you. I recommend observing as I help ease the flow of spirit through her body.” He sits down and holds out his hands, a soft light emanating from them.

You sit and do as asked, but follow it up with another question. “Will this be a recurring problem for her? Or might it be something she can adjust to?”

“It depends on how well her body is trained to endure this kind of stress. Using it for long periods of time will lead to repeats of this incident, but if she is able to better harmonize her body to accept the other spiritual energy within her, she may be able to adjust to it.” he explains, slowly moving his hands. You watch carefully as there are small, soft waves of Ki that travel through her. It… almost reminds you of piecing together parts of an action figure that accidentally popped off, just, on a more metaphysical level.

“Hm… might be helpful contacting Melee, then. In fact, she might want to know about this as soon as possible.” you comment. Which…

Pybara nods understandingly. “Ah, to be young again. Very well. To start, you seem quite adept with your weapon already, there is not much more I can recommend beyond advice in Spirit Control. With that said, I would suggest practice with regulation and containment of your energy. Instead of merely trying to reach your higher powers, work with what power you have readily available and use it more efficiently. If you wish to apply this to other abilities, try the same thing. Try to use your telekinesis with better efficiency, instead of a constant focus, make it a calmer flow. And lastly, you may eventually be able to reach the most advanced Spirit Control technique, Spirit Fission, though I would say it will take a few more months of training minimum to reach that level. Perhaps even a year.”

“A year… hmnr.” You cross your arms and think on that. Maybe you could get it done sooner, but the Mifan Tournament is approaching soon. Currently two months left until it starts. But, might not need that skill for it, especially if you want to spend more time training together with Keli and perfecting your teamwork. Well… that’s a thing for later. “So, should I bring Keli home, or leave her with you folks to rest here?”

“She should be fine here. We will contact you if needed, though it may be good to let those close to her know just in case.” Pybara replies.

You look down at Keli, then back up at him. “Understood, sir. Thank you for all your help.” You give a polite bow, and then get ready to head back home. Guess there’s still a lot you need to practice for up ahead…

Once at Capsule Corp, you’re greeted by Giru, who’s rather happy to see you. “Giru, Giru! Hello Peppa!”

“Hey there lil’ guy.” you reply, giving a high-five. “How’s it been?”

“I have been helping Miss Bulma analyzing new materials. Additionally, we’ve been working on upgrades to defensive capabilities. Giru, Giru.”

“Upgrades?” you repeat inquisitively.

He spins around and takes on a blue coating, his shield appearing out of his arms again. Then he spins once more, this time appearing red in color, with mace fists and what look like rocket launchers above his shoulders. He spins one more time, this time white and gold and having a kind of gold crown around his eye. It… brings to mind something familiar, almost. “Giru, Giru! Miss Bulma and Pantea really like this one!”

“Huh. Neat.” Okay one is clearly more defense-focused, the other’s attack-focused, but you gotta wonder what the last one is. More of a balanced combat mode? …Magic focused? Before you can think more on it, you’re greeted by Bulma peeking out from her lab and waving at you. You wave back, telling her casually. “Hi Bulma, what was this thing you wanted to show me?”

“Well! Made a breakthrough on that spy robot you brought me. I haven’t quite cracked what they’re using to transfer data, but there is something new we’ve picked up on.” she informs you as she leads you into her lab. There’s the spy robot on the table, with some wires attached to it. “Specifically, what it’s designed to track.”

“What do you mean? It’s a spy robot, right? So it’d do like… spying. …Right?” You squint at the robot.

“That was the initial idea, but we’ve located smaller chambers with even smaller centrifuges in them. Its arms are equipped with tiny tubes that can attach to the chambers.” She turns her computer to next show… lines of a DNA sequence? Scrolling A’s and T’s and G’s and C’s. “There wasn’t much we could recover from the interior, but it’s enough that we might be able to make a match.”

“...Ahhh.” you exhale and nod. “I see where this is going. You think it got some of mine?”

“It was following you after all.” she says with a shrug. “Reasonable to assume. We don’t have any actual data from the spy bot itself, since it doesn’t store anything important locally.”

“Right, right…” You find a chair and sit down, tail tapping against it as you think. “Maybe someone’s trying to make some sort of… Artificial Human #22? With Baby and everything else we’ve fought up to this point all mixed in…” You sigh. “Man, these folks really only have that ‘copy your enemies’ gimmick huh?”

Bulma laughs as she digs looks for something. “Pantea mentioned those twins that were with Basilea were talking about a ‘promised day’ of some sort.” she brings up. Once she’s found it, she asks, “Hold out your hand real quick and juuuust relax.”

You do so and rest your chin on the knuckles of your free hand. “Hrmn… even if I was 21’s main target, it could have been after others as well. I wasn’t exactly the only one involved that day.” Bulma brings a tiny device and pricks your finger with it. You flinch a little but have to keep feeling relaxed and calm. Good thing you’ve been through all that training on Yardrat. “Should we contact anyone over this, or wait until we’ve got more evidence?”

“I’d say contact Maple later, once I’ve got a good idea on if this really is what I think it is.” she replies, then giggles softly. “You know, I remember Maple telling me about how you and Gohan reacted to getting your first shots. You hid under the table with your dad, and it took your brother easing you into it for them to finally give it to you.”

“I-I was barely a toddler!” you protest, pouting a bit. Though… if you remember correctly, Baozi apparently braved through the whole thing when he got his. Even Daikon did. Eh, you’ll visit them another time.

She smiles and places the device into a slot by her computer, a whirring sound echoing from it. Giru floats beside you curiously as you heal the finger prick. Another thing to thank the Yardratians for. “In any case, it shouldn’t be too long now. Just gotta-” There’s a less than encouraging sound coming from the computer. Showing the two sequences side by side, it’s… not a match. Bulma’s brow furrows. “…Okay, might need to start letting people know sooner than I thought.”

You hop up and walk closer. “So it didn’t get a sample from me? Why was it following me, then?”

She sighs and rubs her forehead. “That’s the hundred million zenni question, ain’t it? Well, sorry to get your hopes up like that. I do have something else to make up for it, though~” she says with a cheeky grin, pulling something out of her pocket. “The Battle Simulator’s seen some pretty good test runs recently. Wanna give it a go?” Bulma asks, showing you another figurine of yourself.

At the same time, you sense someone else arrive. Two someones, actually. Quiiiite familiar. Chuu Lee and… oh! That Tommy kid!

Oh hey, Nappa, Tien, Chiaotzu, Yamcha, Pantea, Videl’s dad, uncle Acer, aunt Chi-Chi, uncle Raditz, mom, dad, and another one of you. Hah, you’ve got two figures now.

“Take any three you want.” Bulma tells you. “We’ve got a few practice missions set up if you wanna give them a go, oooor, you can try ‘em against a person.” She crosses her arms proudly. “Though you might not wanna get over-confident with that. I may not be the gamer Pantea is, but this is my creation. Careful who you challenge.”

“Miss Bulma, Chuu Lee and Tommy are here to see you.” a secretary lady calls to her.

Her shoulders slouch a bit. “Ah. Well. Ahem. I’ll have to see to them first.”

At the end of his rabbity life, Monster Carrot puts the remainder of his soul into what would be his 59th offspring, forming a carrot that he implants a command into: "Beat up Son Goku!" And thus, Karate Carrot was born. After spending his entire life growing up and up, he finally gets out of the dirt to enact his life's purpose. Thanks to his green, leafy hair, he gains power from Earth's sun, enabling him to fly, run fast, shoot lasers from his eyes, and also Solar Beam.

Joining him is Monster Carrot's other creation from his time on the moon, Mochi. Mochi looked after Karate Carrot after Monster Carrot left them on Earth, and eventually harbored feelings for him that he is too Carrot to recognize. The Gundanium she is made out of makes her super durable, super sticky, super stretchy, and super sweet. In a pinch, she can shine the sun with her pale skin onto Karate Carrot to give him a supercharge.

I’m willing to wait, especially since it sounded like you were asking for a challenge, Bulma.” you tell her with a cheeky grin. “Oh, oh, oh, is there a way to do some sort of tag team thing? That’d be great. Different players, different fighters. Plus it’d be some good training for the tournament.”

Bulma blinks, then turns her head to the secretary. “Heidi, make sure to write that down.”

“Y-yes ma’am?” she responds in confused affirmation.

Bulma gives you a double thumb’s up and exits, while you go over the figurines on your own. Giru hovers by, looking over some as well. “Giru, Giru. Miss Bulma has worked quite hard on ensuring they are very durable.”

“Yeah?” You toss both of your figurines up in the air and catch them. “What kind of tests?”

“They are currently able to withstand 20 g’s with minimal damage.” he informs you.

After a few minutes of questioning and examination, Bulma finally returns with Chuu Lee and Tommy. “Hey kiddo, been a while.” the redheaded lady comments.

“Hi Teach.” you return, nodding and smiling.

Tommy takes off his cap and bows his head. “Hello. You’re… Gohan’s sister, right?” He then puts it back, using his cane to make his way to a sofa in the room.

“Yep! World Champ, Son Peppa.” you tell him. “Brother’s still… away, for a while. But shouldn’t be too long before he’s back.” The Dragon Balls are almost back. Soon he’ll be back and everything will be back to normal.

“So, like the doctors said, the medication should prevent any further damage.” Bulma says to Chuu Lee. “Repairing will be… possible, but will take time.”

“Either’s fine. Whatever’s best for him, I’m for.” she says calmly. “It’s what Lapis and I agreed to.”

“Well! Since we’ve got that done, we can move on to this.” Bulma gestures at the arcade machine. “Peppa and I are going to give a demo if you’d like to stay for it.” She then winks, hinting that you do want her to stay and watch.

“Ooh, ooh, mom, what is it?” Tommy asks.

She walks by and sits down beside him. “It’s a kind of game Miss Bulma’s developed. I’ll… tell you as they play it. Sound good?” He nods enthusiastically.

Bulma looks to you and smiles. “Pick your team, Peppa.”

With both trios set, the two of you begin the match, holograms of the characters appearing. Let’s see… you do wanna keep things balanced, so… hrmn. Looking over a little pop-up guide, you check some of their abilities… oooooh, that’s a fun one. Okay, dad and Raditz might actually want to stay back and charge up. You keep Nappa forward and defensive, he’ll need to take a few hits while they power up.

Which… Bulma definitely planned for, as she sets Maple and Acer forward, Acer in the front, with Maple in the middle. And mom’s figurine calls out a spell that debuffs Nappa! Crap! With his power diminished, he can’t land as solid a hit on Acer, Bulma expertly timing a guard, and he can’t take one nearly as well. Acer hits him with a Revenant Driver that leaves Nappa stunned.

Okay, lesson learned. Just tanking things while partners power up isn’t the path to victory. You pull Nappa’s figurine into the back row to let him recover and set dad’s and Raditz’s forward into the middle row. You don’t think mom’s figurine can depower things twice in a row… and you’re right! Bulma has to pull her back and instead has Acer and Chi-Chi forward. Dad and Raditz are overall stronger than them, but you’ll need to be careful. Hmm… wait, you’ve got it! As the second round’s battle begins, you time things so dad follows up Raditz, both targeting Chi-Chi. After you’re able to overcome Bulma’s guard attempt with Chi-Chi with both, they launch a Double Sunday followed by a Kamehameha! Chi-chi’s stunned by the combo, which means you can defend easier against just Acer.

Okay, next and hopefully last round! And the special ability you saw kicks in. The Goku and Raditz holograms preform the Fusion Dance! And with the now overwhelming power of them, Bulma’s on the ropes. She brings Maple back into the forefront to try and get a combo going with Acer, but Nappa’s recovered and is able to join in. This time, you’re able to have Nappa tank the combo attack Maple and Acer have by timing the guard perfectly, and then retaliating with your dad and uncle’s fusion! A quick combo followed by his Ender Kamehameha knocks both of them out!

“It has! …Though, well.” You suck in air through your teeth hesitantly. “We hit a bit of a snag yesterday…”

She tilts her head. “What happened?”

You walk over and sit down on a chair to explain. “Keli’s been trying to develop something using her shared Ki with Melee. Trying to like, harmonize it with her own Ki and access them both at the same time. And, well, it did work.”

At first she seems pleasantly surprised by that, but she catches on quickly that there’s something that went wrong. With trepidation and a sigh, she asks, “What happened?”

“She overtaxed her body and passed out. Couldn’t handle it for very long.” You look down apologetically. “I should have paid better attention.”

Teach pinches the ridge of her nose, mumbling under her breath, “Of course she did. Damn it Keli…” She sits up straight, shaking her head. “It’s not your fault. She’s gotten… better about it, but she has a tendency to be headstrong and willing to push herself harder than she needs to. Especially when she feels a need to ‘prove herself’ in some way. She’s probably trying extra hard to do something for Melee and not really thinking things through.”

You... are a little surprised to hear that. “She always seemed so calm and focused during our training, not headstrong and rushing things.”

“I don’t doubt that, but as you said, she overtaxed her body with this. Was it the first time she ever really used it?” Chuu Lee questions, and you nod. “Yep. The moment she knew she could do it, she tried to go for as long as possible.”

Starting to pick up what she’s implying here. “So… as the, I guess still current Mifan Champ, do you have any advice you’re willing to share?”

“Yeah.” Teach replies with a quick nod. “When Mark and I teamed up, he did worry he was going to drag me down. He wasn’t nearly as strong as I was, and had trouble keeping up during training. But I believed in us as a team, and in the end it worked out. Instead of trying to drag him up to my level, we figured out what we were good at and where our skills overlapped, and most importantly how to fight effectively using those skills.” She grins proudly. “I’d think our titles are testament to how well that worked out.”

“So… when she’s been able to recover, I should have a talk with her about not trying to just keep up with me, but working with where our skills overlap first?” you ask.

She gives a cheeky wink. “Well, if you want to take my other title, World Champ.”

Hehehehehe. You sit up and stretch, noticing Bulma had been writing something on a datapad, taking glances at the arcade machine from time to time, but also sort of listening in on your conversation. Placing your hands on your hips, you ask, “Say, Teach, you wanna give this a try? It’s quite intuitive. Oh! And Tommy can pick which ones we use.”

The boy’s expression lights up considerably. “Can I, mom?”

She blushes and smiles bashfully. “Well… you know what? Yeah. Come on.”

Chuu Lee gives him very detailed explanations of the figures, and he decides on having you use Yamcha, Tien, and Chiaotzu, while Chuu Lee’s asked to use the two of you and Mr. Satan. Heh. Fighting yourself, huh? Well, how should you try this?

You’re going to use this as another opportunity to train your mind for team tactics. So, Tien, Chiaotzu, and Yamcha. Honestly not a bad lineup. Let’s see, what can they do…? Aha! Okay, you’ve got it! Seeing Chuu Lee hold back Hercule and one of the Peppas, you can figure she’s planning something. Unfortunately, you are too.

Chiaotzu starts things off with his telekinesis, holding the hologram of you in place. Next up, Tien rushes in and is easily able to break through her guard, finishing things off with a Dodonpa that leaves her stunned. Next up, Yamcha rushes in and hits with a Wolf Fang Fist, severely depleting that Peppa’s HP. Chuu Lee didn’t even have a chance to counter, hah!

Next round though, things don’t quite go in your favor. She was still able to charge up the other Peppa, and what’s more, Mark’s got an ability that activates, cheering that Peppa on and powering her up even more. Up to- …Crap. Chuu Lee has your other counterpart transform into a a Super Saiyan. You pull back Yamcha and Tien and try to repeat things with Chiaotzu, but you miss the timing and she’s able to avoid the telekinesis, unleashing a devastating attack on the lil’ guy that leaves him stunned, and Mark’s able to follow up and land a powerful hit with his Megaton Punch.

It’s neck and neck now. Even if you continue as planned, it’ll take perfect timing and maybe a bit of luck to win. Chuu Lee doesn’t seem phased by it, and since Chiaotzu’s still down, so you won’t be able to rely on stunning like before. Well, here goes! You have Tien and Yamcha do the Fusion Dance and become Tiencha! His combined power is just barely able to push you over the edge and start the battle first, and so it all comes down to this! Come ooooon... GOT IT! You overcome the Super Saiyan Peppa’s guard and hit hard, finishing the match with Tiencha’s Wolf Fang Volleyball Fist!

“Whew.” you exhale. “Close one.”

“Yep.” Teach agrees. “If I were just a moment quicker, I’d have been able to get all three of them countering you.” She collects the figures and hands them back to Bulma. “So, think this was helpful at all?”

“Yeah, actually. I think fighting against myself gave some insight into my own weaknesses. If I’m not prepared for any tricky techniques, I’m gonna be a sitting duck in the middle of battle. Even if it’s just covering for my partner, I have to know when to keep my guard up and when to start countering.” You return the figurines to Bulma as well. “Thanks, Teach.”

She ruffles your hair gently. “No prob. That was fun.”

“Oh it’s still a few years away from any real official release, so yeah, it’ll be getting some constant updates.” she explains. “Think it’d be good to have at least a good, oh, 30 or so figures ready for the launch anyway. Maybe even get some other folks to sign on for it, I think King Chappa or Spike would be amused to have a figure of them as World Champs in the mix.”

“Hah, gonna ask Goku and Maple if they want kid versions of them in there too?” Teach inquires.

Bulma shrugs. “Hey, who knows.”

“In that case… you wouldn’t mind if Tommy takes a few of them home with him, right?” you ask, winking at Chuu Lee. Tommy gasps excitedly. “…I’d kinda like to take one too, to be honest.”

“Hah, go right ahead.” Bulma replies, letting the two of you have free reign.

Tommy picks one of Mark, while you take one of yourself. Looking up at Chuu Lee, you next ask, “So… have you been training with your tag team partner in the lead-up too the tournament? Who is it, anyway, if you don’t mind my asking?”

Teach smiles. “Of course. We’re the defending champs. Not changing up that team. Better be careful, Peppa, Mark and I are still in this to win.”

Well, this has been fun, but you think you should head off. Next stop, Mifan! Along the way you telepathically check in with Pybara, making sure Keli’s doing okay. And, thankfully, she is. Still exceptionally tired, so she’s been spending time meditating and relaxing. But their healing has been a great help, and she should be back to normal soon.

Once you arrive at Mifan, you sense that Tien and his students are all at the Crane School dojo, but also there’s Baozi flying laps around the Mifan Castle. Vegeta and Nappa are off in the distance training together. Huh.

And as if on cue, the moment he finally notices you, he bolts over. “Peppa! Peppa! Hey, hey, when’d you get here?”

“Just now, actually. What’s up?”

He places his hands behind his head. “Been booooored. Dad doesn’t want to train, mom’s busy at the Crane School, and don’t even get me started on gramps.”

“G-gramps?” you repeat.

“Emperor Pilaf! I’ve beaten him at every game he has, from Sonic 2 Battle to Super Shogi Supreme!” he blurts out quickly.

He seems to think you’re bluffing, raising an eyebrow in suspicion. “Well, if you insist. HRRAAAH!” Baozi powers up and bolts forward, arms crossed as he flies backward ahead of you. “Gonna transform yourself?”

“Nope.” you reply, powering up considerably, but don’t transform. By the time the two of you are out by the mountains, you’re ready, bringing up your guard. “So, first thing’s first. Let me see your basics.”

“Tch, lame.” Baozi says dismissively. “Basics are boring. I wanna make this fun!” He rushes at you and tries to unleash a flurry of blows… and you dodge easily. He’s definitely trained well, but a bit overconfident. Seeing you keep dodging, he flips back in midair and aims a palm strike at your torso.

You catch his arm and throw him over your shoulder. “When someone’s focused on avoiding your attacks, simply going for a stronger attack isn’t going to turn the tide. It’s more telegraphed and even easier to avoid.” He spins back around and charges up Ki in his palms, letting out a barrage of Ki blasts. You deflect each one with ease. “Careful with how much energy you’re putting out, too, don’t drain yourself.”

“Oh this is nothing!” He charges up a much bigger Ki blast. You teleport above him, giving a quick but not too powerful chop on the head. “Ow! Hey!”

“Sparring, Baozi, sparring. I know you’re eager to try your all and show what you can do, but you gotta pace yourself.” You take your stance. “Second up, you never know when the tide’ll turn!” You rush him, catching the boy by surprise and forcing him to defend himself. You start to bring the battle closer to the ground, the two of you hovering about a couple dozen meters above the earth as you battle. “Third… SPICY CHILI PEPPER PUNCH!” you yell out, very obviously telegraphing you’re going for a wild swing…

And spin around and smack him with your tail, knocking him to the ground. “OW! HEY!” Baozi exclaims. “That wasn’t a punch at all! Your tail’s not a fist, Peppa.”

“Yep. It wasn’t.” you confirm, floating down. “That was a pretty obvious trick. It’s what I mean about telegraphed attacks, you should watch out for stuff like that.”

He dusts himself off and crosses his arms. “Hmnh. Fine. But I’m not gonna give up that easily! …Don’t know how you’re keeping up without transforming though. Did you really get that strong so quickly?”

Sorry for the delay, Labor Day Weekend caused a couple snags in my plans. We are back now though!

He smiles wide. “Yeah! I’ll get this done no problem!”

“Good. Now, let me see some of the skills you’ve developed, Baozi. But keep this in mind: merely pushing harder has its limits.” You take a defensive stance, but prepare to fight even more tricky than before.

Baozi dashes towards you and tries for a jumpkick, only for you to feint out an afterimage. He surprisingly ends up reacting quickly to that, though, energy filling his other leg. He then kicks out an energy blast and flies back at you, attempting a spin-kick this time. But you were able to think quickly enough to punch into the ground with your Ki drill and leave a energy mine there. Baozi flies right into it, getting flung into the air as it detonates.

You follow up by bolting to him, telegraphing a kick, only to have that be a feint. You deliver a palm strike to his torso, then a knee strike that leaves him falling back to the ground. He stops himself and lands, but looks up with a frown. “Not bad, Baozi, but you’re not done yet are you? Come on, let me see what else you’ve got.” you tell the boy, cracking your knuckles.

He stands still for a moment, then grins. “No, no it isn’t.” He points a finger out, filling it with Ki, almost inviting you to try and dodge it. You instead get a few pieces of candy out and keep them in your hand, dashing towards him. But he doesn’t fire off a Dodonpa like you expect. Baozi instead makes a circle with it. Ah, that’s something you’ve seen Keli use before! You use Telekinesis to have the candy trail behind you, preparing to use them as a distraction. As soon as you’ve closed in, Baozi flings the Ki ring at you. You dodge it with ease, tossing the candy at the younger half-Saiyan. And… “Hey, thanks!” Baozi calls out… telekinetically holding the candy in place with his other hand.

He then redirects the ring right back at you, and this time you use the Rasenken to destroy it. But right as you do, you feel something thwack the side of your head. It’s one of the candies. Baozi’s looking up with the cheekiest, proudest grin on his face, unwrapping another and eating it. He doesn’t even need to say it, the boy thinks he’s won.

But he should really be more aware of his surroundings. “-but, don’t let yourself become overconfident.” you warn cryptically. There. That’s fair.

With smug satisfaction, Baozi finishes the first candy and pops the second in his mouth. There’s a moment of silence between the two of you, the boy forcing himself to chew the gummy. Eventually he just can’t take it anymore and spits it out, then tries to spit out the taste too. “Ahhh, eeeuuuggghhh… P-pEPpaAAa… whY… do YOu… augh…” He’s sweating over it.

You pat him on the head. “Don’t let yourself become overconfident. Okay, come on, let’s get you something to wash that down.” He whines a bit. “Tell you what…” You grab the other Hellfire gummy out of the air. “Later, wanna give this to your dad.”

He looks up, face still sweating, but with a devious grin across it now. Oh, he most certainly does. After getting him something nice, cool, and deactivating, he’s definitely less antsy than before. So, as the two of you fly off, he asks, “You gonna tell me about what you did to get so strong?”

“Well, mostly I’ve just been learning how to draw out more of my strength without transforming. Gohan showed me it’s technically possible, even if he needed some help getting there. The goal, eventually, is to be able to use all my power in my base state; Super Saiyan is just accessing power you already have, right? So stands to reason there should be ways to access it without altering one’s body with a transformation like that.”

“Huh. Never really thought about it that way.” he replies. “Kinda cool.”

The pair of you arrive at Pilaf’s palace as you chat, greeted by General Blue, Master Shen, and eventually Pilaf and Shu. “Ah, Son Peppa! I see you’ve been entertaining my little heir.” he says brightly, but clearly doing his best to hide his exhaustion.

“Yeah gonna be hanging out with her for a bit, gramps.” Baozi remarks, grabbing a portable systems and a capsule case.

“Yes, yes, of course.” Pilaf then exhales and slouches. “Really, thanks. I’ve been doing all I can, but I’m no kart racing expert or even half of the things he’s wanted me to play.” Walking along with you, he then asks, “So, you still intend on participating in the Mifan Tag Tournament, correct?”

“Absolutely. I’ve been training hard for it.” you confirm.

“Excellent. It’ll make things all the more entertaining. Plus I’m sure any… less savory individuals would be a bit less willing to try and nab the prize if they know you’re around.” he remarks.

“...The prize? Are you offering something other than like, cash?” you inquire.

Pilaf chuckles. “Indeed. Let’s just say I’ve got a little something that’ll be able to grant a heart’s desire.” He winks tellingly. And… is he implying what you think he’s implying?

“Okay ready Peppa.” Baozi states, supplies gathered. “And I’ve got what I want to exchange for. I wanna learn those Ki mines. You?”

“Well not yet, but I’m sure your mother and Bulma and a few others have noticed.” he says nonchalantly. “Anyway! We’ll have them all gathered and ready by the Tournament.”

You try to keep a neutral expression as you process this info. Bulma didn’t mention such a thing, maybe she hasn’t noticed? And… well, you can check with mom later if you want. Still. Now you’ve got another reason to win this. You pat Pilaf on the shoulder, commenting, “Well. Definitely looking forward to seeing my brother again.”

He looks up in confusion. “Hm?”

“Oh, nothin’.” You finally walk off with Baozi.

You give one last smile at Pilaf as you leave. You don’t really have to check with anyone about it just yet, but might be good to talk with others later about the Dragon Balls already being back. And Pilaf planning to offer a wish to the Tournament winners. Eventually you and Baozi end up meeting Lime, Videl, and 19, the girls have been talking among themselves while waiting for you to arrive.

“...so 16 has decided to sit out this Tournament. He is still unsure how to handle the… complicated situation he is in.” the android girl informs the two.

“Aww, really?” Baozi asks. “I wanted to see that big guy fighting.”

Lime raises an eyebrow, then asks, “Babysitting, Peppa?”

“Hey!” the boy blurts out angrily.

“Come on Lime, be nice. He’s fine.” you tell her. “So you won’t be working with him, 19?”

“I will not. Chiaotzu and I have formed a team for this.” she says calmly.

Lime rubs her chin. “An interesting combo. Is it ‘cause you two are dating?”

“That is not the only reason we have decided to work together.” she says with a neutral tone, though something about it feels like she’s annoyed by the question.

“Yeah, Chiaotzu’s not the toughest, but he’s really tricky.” Baozi notes. “Wonder how you two will do against dad and Tien.”

You do a double-take. “Wait, Vegeta’s paired up with Tien?” both you and Videl ask.

“Oh, you didn’t know already? Heh, yeah.” he says nonchalantly.

Videl gets a serious look on her face, mumbling, “Hmm… he might have to deal with that…”

You raise an eyebrow. “Deal with what, exactly?”

“You’ll find out soon enough.” she says cryptically.

Lime meanwhile listens on with a gleam in her eyes. “Well well… betting pool’s sounding more and more enticing by the minute.”
