Welcome back.

Rules are simple: Votes are tallied every hour, with whatever course of action being the most popular being the course of action taken. Write ins are encouraged and non-mutually exclusive votes will be combined if possible.

When a roll is called for, roll a D100 unless otherwise specified.

For a short summary for the new and to recap:

You are Alex. A newly minted trainer and camping enthusiast just starting out on your journey at the age of Seventeen after your father lost your job in order to help pay the bills.

Last time, over the span of three days you caught your first fewpokemon: Fluffy, an Eevee, Syurm, a Sewaddle, Volta, a Shinx and Kay O-o, a Jangmo-o, met a couple of new friends, Fie the fire Gym Leader and Gareth, an aspiring Aura Guardian.

You just reached Route 2 and made it to shelter on a hillock amongst a tangle of rocks as the sun sets and a storm rolls in. In the process, your arm got scratched up by a Rufflet, leaving you bleeding. Fie is stitching you up after convincing you to have a mouthful of gin while Syurm weaves a canopy over the camp to keep you dry for the night.
>>
You decide to let Syurm handle this. She’s smart and she knows what she’s doing.

You think back to the little tent she made for herself last night.

“Jus’ leave her be.” You mumble. “Le’ her do the ca’opy firsht.” You add.

Gareth hesitates, giving you a doubtful look, but concedes, going back to tending the fire as Cinder and Syurm weave a silken dome over the camp, Syurm providing the silk, Fie’s Blaziken strengthening it by weaving in cut grass and sticks.

Half an hour later, the wind is blowing into the camp in earnest and the pair have finished weaving the dome. There’s even a cleverly don chimney on the left side to allow the smoke from the fire to escape, while not letting the wind and rain in.

Fie has also stitched up the worst cuts and the two lacerations the Rufflet left and is busy finishing up the dressing on your arm.

Your head is swimming pleasantly from the measure of gin Fie gave you.

It would seem Syurm isn’t quite done though. She’s chittering at Cinder, as she moves towards the gap in the rock the westerly wind is howling through.

The Blaziken listens for a spell, before tapping Fie on the shoulder, then on getting a nod, heads out into the howling wind as the first splats of heavy rain drops hit the canopy.

She returns shortly with an armful of branches, before laying out a rough frame, which Syurm gobs together with her silk, before the pair start the same process as previously, weaving an impressively strong door out of silk and branches, before Cinder lodges it in the gap between the two rocks blocking the majority of the wind from the west, then running back off, returning with more branches which, judging by how she picks up Syurm, then jumps up on top of the huge boulders with her and the branches, are intended to reinforce the canopy.

It’s another fifteen minutes before they finish, an exhausted Syurm falling fast asleep by the fire. The air has warmed considerably and in the gaps in the rocks, you can see the blended white and grey of more panels stuck into the ground, acting as windbreaks to keep the wind from whistling into the camp from the sides.

You move to pick Syurm up, overbalance, lurch and teeter on the brink of falling before you regain your balance.

Okay, being tipsy and having lost an appreciable amount of blood is not a great combination.

You sit back down as Fie sits you back down from where she was tending the fire.

“No, no, no, no, you take it easy.” She says, scooping Syurm up and bundling her into your lap. “Gareth and I have got this tonight, you just rest up.” She adds, going to your bag and fishing your towel out, draping it around your shoulders like a blanket.

It’s kind of sweet she’s going to all this trouble for you, but you kind of want to be doing something right now.

With not much else to do, you turn to your pokedex.

You decide to see what other pokemon live on Route 2.

It’s awkward typing with your off-hand, but you eventually are presented with a list.

Unfortunately, it’s for the whole of the Route without differentiation, though there appears to be a subsection for Lake Clarity.

Route 2 appears to have a lot of diversity though.

It seems you got pretty unlucky with the Rufflet though. They seem to be on the rare side.

Besides them, there’re also reports of Riolu and Fennekin being seen occasionally.

Aron, Geodude and Sandshrew are apparently pretty common in the area along with flocks of Starly and Fletchinder.

Machop and Mienfoo are also known to inhabit the area, along with Vulpix and Growlithe, both of which, are introduced from overseas and have been outcompeting Fennekin.

You're snapped out of your reading by Gareth bringing you a plate of food and releasing the rest of your team.

"How are you feeling?" Gareth asks.

He looks concerned.

Fletchling/Fletchlinder for me.
We already have a Fighting pokemon with Kay O-o. Aron, why not but we'll have to switch out someone in long term for including a water type.

Our team could be quite good if we switch out Syurm, like keeping her as an adventure companion for utility but getting a "fighter" replacement for 6v6. Last spot should be Swampert
>>

>Fletchling and Growlithe.

One of these two pls.
Maybe catch an extra Growlithe to send to our brother and when we have the opportunity later on a ponyta for our sister.

“Alright.” You reply. “Just a little tipsy. I’ll get these checked out when we reach Newport.” You add, holding up your bandaged arm for emphasis. “Maybe get a Wooloo fleece jacket.”

Your head is still swimming. It’s kind of hard to think about if there’s any pokemon on the list you want or not.

“If you say so. And that might be a good idea.” Gareth says, though he looks a little doubtful, returning to his own spot around the fire and picking up his own dinner as his team dig into their meals.

The wind picks up and you can hear the rain hammering down outside. Syurm’s handiwork speaks for itself as time ticks by:

There isn’t so much as a drop of water leaking through the canopy or trickling down the boulders and it’s lovely and warm with the heat from the fire being trapped by the canopy and wind breaks. It’s not even smoky, the smoke getting funneled up and out of the chimney opening.

(Part 1)
>>
>>4953592
(Part 2)

It’s surreal. Or maybe it’s the gin giving everything a dreamy quality, but you swear you’ve had dreams like this as a kid.

Once you’re all finished, Fie collects the plates and starts washing up with the help of a Skrelp you vaguely recall her mentioning when she battled Mike.

Gareth meanwhile busies himself setting up the remaining two tents.

To your surprise, Syurm hops down from your lap with a yawn before heading to the eastmost crevice into the rocks. Cinder joins her, collecting a few of the extra sticks you’d taken for fire wood.

They disappear outside and you wonder what they’re up to.

You struggle with your curiosity for a moment before yielding to it.

You lurch to your feet and after a moment of vertigo, walk around the fire.

"What are you doing?" Fie asks.

"Just seeing what Syurm and Cinder are up to." You assure.

She blinks, then shrugs, apparently not seeing any harm in the decision.

"Alright, just yell if there's trouble." She sees, before she and her Skrelp return to the dishes.

When you reach the gap, it's to find Cinder holding another wood frame togegether.

Except, this one broadens out from the top, which you're relatively certain is going to attach to the main canopy.

Neither pokemon appears to have noticed you.

You watch curiously as the pair construct the awning, before Cinder attaches it to the canopy, then the pair fashion two supports and prop the awning up, creating a sheltered ‘porch’ looking out eastward into the dark, where you can just make out the waving of wind-blown grass.

Cinder picks Syurm up as they sit down just ahead of where you’re leaning around the boulder to watch.

It’s nearly five minutes before this addition to your shelter becomes apparent:

The first arrival to the porch is a battered-looking Rufflet, which you recognise as the one from earlier, who settles just under the awning and flaps and shakes water off itself, apparently grateful enough for the shelter not to ask questions.

After him, a group of Geodude, both the normal variants and the less commonly seen variety first seen in Alola take shelter as far in as they can without encroaching on Syurm and Cinder’s space. Close behind them come a group of Growlithe.

You watch with no small amount of amazement as the crevice the awning is covering fills up within about five minutes, more than you would’ve credited, with steadily more formidable and clearly older pokemon crowd the outer edges, shepherding offspring in ahead of them and packing the younger and weaker ones in tight.

“Making an awning.” You reply. “There’s a whole bunch of pokemon sheltering over there.” You add.

“Really?” Fie asks, before going to look herself.

You can tell the exact moment she realises what she’s looking at.

She watches for a minute, then returns to her spot by the fire.

“That Sewaddle of yours is something else.” Fie says, shaking her head. “I’m going to have to get a picture of her handiwork tomorrow.” She adds reflectively.

Ok guys time to make a plan for tomorrow.
Do we want to catch some of the mons of the road?
In my opinion, both Aron and Fletchling could fit the team.
However, if we get Aron we lock the last spot. I'd prefer us to catch a Fletchling and fill the last spot with a swampert. Also, we can use Syurm while adventuring and switch her out in towns for a better combat oriented pokemon

Also, Supporting >>4953877
Syurm could definitely become a good user
>>
>>4953883
All of our pokemon could be great users since all of them are physical attackers.
Let's see if there's a Growlithe still there in the morning, we can send it to our brother and use it as a reserve team member from time to time letting our other pokemon rest with our family when we need to switch.
>>
>>4953890
Damn haven't noticed all of them are physical.
We can always set up Umbreon as using special instead of physic, That and last spot primarina instead of swamper?
Ok for getting a growlithe for the family, but still hard set on Fletchling as a better use of a spot for a fire type. Should we get an Aron?
>>
>>4953909
Anon while all of them are primarily physical attackers they have a good special attack stat across the board.
Umbreon has both Curse and Nasty Plot as set up moves and can actually pull them of due to bulk and two healing moves.

I suggested catching a Feebas.
To evolve it into Milotic we only need to raise friendship and beauty by taking her to a grooming salon a few times.
Clawitzer is my second guess for a good water type (we can hold it like a handgun too).
Btw Growlithe/Arcanine is also a great mixed attacker.
>>
Counterpoint: Get a Larvitar because they're my favorite. Balance be damned.
>>
>>4953946
Larvitar is a good option and one of my famvorite too. If we get him, maybe we can evolve fluffy in a water type instead of umbreon? What's your poisiton for fire pokemon? Larvitar would fit the same slot as Aron in my opinion

Alright, I'll go ahead and at least make a start on updating the map again for this.

As a sidenote: You're going to want at least a little bit of depth to your team's roster, both for utility and flexibility later on, so don't stress too much about filling up your party.
>>
>>4954383

Your head is starting to clear some now. Your arm is sore and you're thirsty and tired from a long day's walking.

You make a note to ask Fie if she'd mind putting the billy on before you turn in.

In the meantime though, this little incident has been a bit of a wake-up call:

If this hillock hadn't have been here, you'd have been in a bit of a predicament, insofar as places to wait out the howling gale and driving rain outside is concerned.

So it might be prudent to at least start planning your trip a little more. You open your map again and punch in a search for campsites, roadhouses and cabins along the various Routes throughout Arnet.

As it happens, from Newport to Saltcoast, you're spoilt for choice and out along Routes 5 and 8, there're a bunch of well-established and well-known campsites and cabins used by the drovers.

Outside of these though, things tend to get sparser the further west you go. They don't completely dry up, but there're maybe one or two roadhouses apiece for the central Routes, along with an advisory to have some sort of riding pokemon, since journeying along these routes can take up to a week.

You're interrupted by Fie tapping you on the shoulder. She's done changing and when you turn to look, she's wearing Torchic print flanelette pyjamas.

"Watcha doin'?" She asks.

"Just planning out the trip a bit better. Or, making a start." You reply.

She nods.

"Probably a good idea." She agrees. "Anything you want before we turn in?" She asks, sounding concerned. "How're you feeling?"

Okay. Hopefully, you'll be able to make out the marks I've made.

This isn't scaled, but the four big, long routes on the cardinal directions out of '6' are about a week-long journey riding each.

As for a legend:
RH is for Roadhouses. Think 'a pokemon center in the middle of nowhere'.
C is for Cabins. These aren't fancy, but they beat sleeping in a tent.
X is for good camping spots. Some of them are used often enough to have amenities provided.

Nope. This is bothering you. It's bothering you a lot. You bundle your things up and place them outside the tent, then do the same with Fie's things as she looks at you quizzically.

You grab the tent carpet, then unroll it and secure it in place at the corners and sides, ensuring you’ve got a nice, cushioned and more importantly, warm floor for the tent.

Once you’re satisfied with your handiwork, you replace everything back in its prior position and get changed.

When you’re finished, you open the tent flap and Fie comes in and stops as she realises what you’ve done.

“Oh. Wow, this is nice.” She says, walking around in bare feet on the carpet.

“It really is.” You agree.

“Careful, I might make a habit of this.” She teases, grinning as she climbs into her sleeping bag, sighing gratefully.

You grin and grab her arms, using them as resistance to eel out of your sleeping bag, then pin Fie down.

There’s a beat as she looks up at you, surprised at the sudden reversal in position, before you grin.

“No…” She says warningly as you use your good hand to pin her wrists, grinning wider.

“No…” She says again, sterner as you reach for her waist.

“No…!” She shouts, before she erupts in uncontrolled laughter and squirming as you tickle her mercilessly.

She tries to break your grip, bucking and squirming as she fights for breath inbetween laughing as you dance your fingers up her sides and over her stomach, earning further gales of laughter until she’s grinning and tearing up.

Then there's the sound of the zipper working and Gareth is in the doorway looking alarmed.

"What's going on?" He asks, sounding concerned.

“Just screwing around.” You reply as Fie catches her breath and finally manages to free herself, sitting up and waving Gareth off.

“It’s fine.” She assures, before turning to you. “But Arceus, that was slick.” She complements.

“Thanks.” You say, modestly, before Fie moves.

The next thing you know, she’s got you pinned with her ankles locked behind your head and she’s trapped your legs against her chest and she’s repaying the favour to your feet.

You forgot how fast she can move when she wants to. You barely had time to register she'd started to roll before she had you in this lock.

And now, all you can do is flail helplessly as she sends you into convulsions with her dancing fingers.

"Nononononono...Hahahahahaha…! Stop! Stop! Stoooop...!" You manage in between uncontrollable gales of laughter.

"Mm..." She pretends to think about it, even though you can't see her face from where you are. "No." she says and keeps going.

"Gareth! Help...!" You beg before you're swept up in more uncontrollable laughter.

"...No, I think I'll leave you two alone." He says, sounding more confused and non-plused than anything as he zips the tent flap back up and leaves you alone again.

"Please! Stop!" You beg, tearing up.

"Hm... What's in it for me?" She asks, thoughtfully, pausing in her relentless tickling and going for a much more torturous means of playing on the fact you're ticklish, tracing feather-light strokes of one finger tip on the soles of your feet, making you twitch, jump and giggle as she expertly targets the really sensitive areas of your feet.

“Hm…” Fie says thoughtfully, trailing another path up your foot with her finger and setting you off laughing again. “Okay.” She relents and lets you go, before pushing herself up, then arranging herself cross-legged next to you with a flexibility and grace that’s surreal.

Or, maybe that’s the gin softening you up.

She smiles as you sit up.

“It’s nice to just have some fun sometimes.” She says.

“Yeah.” You’ve got to admit, childish as that was, it was fun.

Fie turns serious again after a beat.

“Seriously though, I want my pillow back.” She says.

Evidently, not enough to burn that ‘anything’ you owe her, but you wonder just how far she’s willing to push. There’s nothing stopping her taking the pillow back or from having taken it back earlier.

You lever yourself upright and kill your alarm.

It's while you're wiping the sleep from your eyes that you stop and stare.

It's not just your team and Cinder in here.

Looking around, you don't think you could move much more than you already have without disturbing a wild pokemon.

In the open door, you can see Fie's Flareon is fast asleep.

It seems most of the pokemon in here are the younger, first-stage pokemon.

To your surprise, that Rufflet is sleeping next to Volta, wing draped over her.

There're also a litter of Growlithe curled up next to an Arcanine that's squeezed itself into a corner, cutting you off from your pack.

This makes you feel oddly nostalgic to camping with your dad. He's never very far from his Arcanine.

In front of Fie's things is a mixed group of Vulpix and a few Fennekin, huddled next to a Ninetails and what, at first glance, looks like a Dermanitan.

Also, Arceus above it's like a furnace in here.

More problematic still, you can make out a bunch of Geodude and Aron have made themselves comfortable on the other side of Flareon.

You shimmy out of your sleeping bag and start getting dressed.

This is easier said than done, since you’ve got to retrieve your clothes from under your team.

You’re about halfway done when Fie stirs and starts groping around until she makes contact with Cinder’s arm.

Cinder, apparently familiar with whatever this is, shifts out of the way as Fie goes to flick her.

“‘Ve told you… not so close…” She mumbles, sitting up and wiping her eyes sleepily having missed.

You can pick the exact moment she returns to lucidity.

She blushes red as her hair at the sight of you and turns around abruptly, before she registers the fact that you’re both surrounded.

You know exactly how she must be feeling right now, because the overwhelming urge to crawl back into your sleeping bag and die is at the forefront of your mind as well.

Despite the first half dozen things that she probably wants to say and do likely being actively deleterious to everyone, she manages not to yell anything and after downing half of a litre bottle of water she must’ve grabbed from her bag sometime during the night, she pokes Cinder again.

“You and Flareon had one job.” She hisses. “Now get them out of here.” She says, pointedly not looking at you as you continue to dress, now safely modest at least.

So far, so good, but this is still a scarily precarious situation.

(Part 1. Feel free to write in.)

(Part 2)

Once you’re dressed -sure, your clothes are blood-spattered and your shirt and jacket are shredded, but you can’t get to your bag right now- you turn around to give Fie her privacy as Cinder nudges Flareon awake and the pair start politely moving your uninvited guests back outside.

“Sorry about that.” Fie says as you hear her dressing behind you. “I didn’t think the locals would be quite that bold.” She admits as you watch as your tent empties of freeloaders.

Except for the Rufflet, which Cinder eventually resorts to picking up, despite squawked protests and carrying out.

When you exit the tent, you notice that the campsite is relatively empty.

Some of the Geodude have tucked themselves in nooks and crannies as the wind beats against the pavilion, which is holding up admirably in the wind, but it seems like most of the pokemon who took shelter under the awning migrated into your tent after Cinder came in.

Gareth’s stoking the fire and watching the exodus with a curious expression while Fie is giving Flareon and Cinder a dressing down.

I wonder if she ever got to team up with her original Chansey turned Blissey friend or not. Plus you gotta give credit to both in terms of engineering and ingenuity. They might have had terrible luck(fucking plot armor) and poor resources but holy shit was those two are innovative as hell. Jessie would be a terrifying Mom...I feel sorry for James but he's chill as fuck and helps mellow her out, but still. He has it rough. Just gotta knock her up more often or something.

This WOULD also explain why the family needs money so badly. James probably needs startup funds for his projects to start over again and Jessie cannot afford it with her nurse Joy pay.

A gust of wind pushes the westward door taut and you can hear the patter of rain.

Seems like the rain hasn’t passed.

This in mind, you go and get some breakfast as your team files out of the tent.

Once they’re busy eating, you bring Fie some food. She’s currently doing push-ups with Cinder while Flareon does sprints around the edge of the camp.

“Just leave that there, we’re almost done.” Fie says, nodding to a rock within arms reach.

“Sure. Just don’t be too hard on Cinder. You did warn me she’s got a habit of leaving doors open.”

“Right. Well you can join in once you’re done eating.” Fie replies.

“I’ll ah, I’ll do that.” You say weakly, before going to eat your own breakfast
>>
>>4958505
Once you’re done eating, you gather your team together. Fie’s got a good point. Might as well get some training in.

After some thought, you go and get your rope and tie it off to one of the rocks.

That done, you go and gather some sticks from the pile of kindling and start laying out a ‘ladder’.

After some instruction and demonstration, you’ve got Volta and Syurm running a lateral ladder drill while you have Kay O-o and Fluffy doing jump rope.

You’ve not been at this for more than five minutes, before you’ve suddenly got company:

That Rufflet is back and has made room for himself with Fluffy and Kay O-o.

Considering your altercation yesterday and how Volta messed him up, his insistence on hanging around with you is kind of confusing.

It’s not worth stopping everything to chase him off though. It’d send the wrong message to all the other pokemon here as well.

After another five minutes, one of the Aron is running the drills with Volta and Syurm and shortly after that, you have to let the rope out as a Growlithe, then a Fennekin and then a Vulpix join in.

“Look at you, making friends.” Fie says sitting up from where she and Cinder have just finished doing sit-ups.

“I don’t know why they’re so friendly.” You admit, baffled but also awed by what you’re seeing.

“They can tell it was your tent they slept in last night.” Fie replied. “Otherwise, they’d be all over me and Cinder right now.”

“You’ve also got a very welcoming aura.” Gareth notes from by the fire where he’s doing the dishes. “It puts them at ease.”

“What about Rufflet?” You ask.

Your arm is starting to cramp, but aside from Fluffy, none of the pokemon doing jump rope show much sign of tiring.

“Rufflet are most concerned about getting stronger.” Gareth said. “I guess after you and Volta beat him so soundly yesterday, he’s decided that you’re the best way for him to do that.”

Huh. Well that makes sense, in a backwards sort of way.

Now things have calmed down a little, you decide to tidy yourself up a bit.

You dismiss your team to play for a while, then go back to your tent and change into a set of clothes that aren’t bloodstained and ruined.

You’re going to have to buy some more clothes when you reach Newport. And maybe some more hard-wearing ones.

When you exit your tent, your pokemon are playing tag. Kay O-o seems to have taken it on himself to keep things from spiralling into chaos and Cinder is making sure he doesn’t cause any problems.

Satisfied that they’re all happy, you take out your pokedex. Time to brush up on your geography some more.

You go and sit down by the fire and start reading.

After going into Origin Cave, you're kind of curious about the other caves in the region, so you decide to start with them:

C1 Origin Cave: A small, relatively isolated cave that has provided shelter to pokemon for time immemorial. There is a shrine at its heart where Aura Guardian novicess first journey to gain further attunement to their abilities.

C2 Genesis Cave: The most isolated cave known in Arnet, Genesis cave is often used as shelter by local pokemon, but the shrine in its depths is always a silent, solitary and lonely place. Aura Guardian novices on pilgrimage come here to meditate and further awaken their powers.

C3 Prover’s Cave: Prover’s Cave is one of the most stable and unchanging places in the Scorch Islands. Aura Guardian novices on pilgrimage venture to the shrine here to prove that they can wield their abilities confidently and competently at the stiflingly hot shrine in its depths.

C4 Challenger’s Cave: The final test for an Aura Guardian novice, Challenger’s cave is an expansive labyrinth with a shrine at its heart, guarded by a powerful pokemon. Any novice who defeats it and returns with proof is recognised as a true Aura Guardian.

C5 Guardian’s Cave: The home of Arnet’s patron Guardian, where all Aura Guardians, upon reaching here from Challenger’s Cave, are recognised by said patron and assume the title and responsibilities of an Aura Guardian.

You decide to spend some time playing with your team and the younger wild pokemon.

The Rufflet brings you the rope in a very pointed manner.

You acquiesce and soon, you’ve got a sudden death circuit running to and fro in and out of the impromptu jump rope.

After a while, the pokemon tire of the game and instead, you find yourself as the centrepiece of an impromptu game of king of the hill.

At the end of it, you’re battered and exhausted but no one is seriously hurt and all the pokemon seem content to take a break for a bit.

Looking around, Fie is practicing an unfamiliar martial art, sparring with Cinder, though even though it’s obvious that the Blaziken is pulling her punches, every one that connects sends Fie staggering.

Gareth meanwhile is training with Druddigon and Mienfoo, doing push ups.

You sit down next to one of the rocks and breathe a sigh of relief.

You need a break.

Apparently, the pokemon you’ve been playing with agree.

No sooner have you settled in than one of the Aron has crawled into your lap, effectively pinning you, while a Fennekin and Growlithe tuck themselves under your arms and a Vulpix makes itself comfortable on your shins.

On the other side of the camp, you can see Fie and Gareth are still hard at work training.
“Um…” You manage awkwardly as your own team joins in on burying you alive and the tall fox with the huge ear tufts you mistook for a Darmanitan, the Arcanine and the Ninetails sit themselves at a polite remove either side of you while the tall one sits down on a nearby rock and studies you curiously.

Looks like you’re trapped.

Well, you’re not going anywhere.

You close your eyes and relax.

This worked out well enough in the cave, so time to give it another try.

You’re not sure if the red you see is the insides of your own eyelids or a signifier that you’re making progress, but the warmth of the Fennekin and Growlithe especially help you focus.

They remind you a lot of Dad’s Arcanine and how he used to let you cuddle up to him in the dead of winter when you were a little kid and it was raining outside.

Only, now you’re in Arcanine’s position.

You’re familiar with responsibility. It’s fallen to you a lot over the years to spot the glaring holes in your parents’ various money-making schemes before they risked money on something catastrophically stupid.

It feels doubly heavy right now, with your team lounging around you while the guardians of these young wild pokemon watch you like hawks.

You can empathise with their caution though.

(Part 1)
>>
>>4960062
(Part 2)

Ah.

You feel your perception tilt and suddenly, you can feel the whole camp:

Close at hand, you can feel the general sleepy content of the wild pokemon and your team as they rest up after their play.

Just under that general content is a wary\curious\assessing welter of feelings, which you assume is the three guardian pokemon watching you and their charges.

And at the edge of your vision is…

Two beacons. One flaring red with such intensity that you can feel the heat and exertion of intense exercise from where you’re sat and the other, a serene, steady blue. Not as bright, but you get the sense of a smile.

The blue grows brighter and brighter, turning white, before you jump as a hand touches your shoulder.

Your eyes snap open and you’re face to face with a grinning Gareth as he leans forward from where he’s knelt in front of you.

“You really are a natural.” He says, sitting back to give you space. “I guess now is a good time to practice, considering… Well.” He gestures to the dozing pokemon you’re pinned by.

You notice the Arcanine and Ninetails are sniffing at Gareth curiously as Delphox looks between you with what you can only assume is a frown.

This seems like a good opportunity to ask Gareth more about aura.

You’ve got a few questions in mind, but there’s one above all the rest you feel is especially pertinent.

“Are there any risks to using aura?” You ask tentatively.

“There are.” Gareth confirms. “Psychics have their own code of ethics when it comes to telepathy. Aura Guardians have one as well. We do not intrude on others’ minds. It’s extremely dangerous, for both the one doing the intruding and for the one being intruded upon.” He warns. “So, don’t try reading anyone’s minds.” He says, lightening up slightly. “Besides that… there’s the possibility you could wind up altering your own or someone else’s personality if you’re not careful and you try something you’re not used to. And there’re stories of some exceptionally powerful pokemon being able to manipulate people through their auras.”

(Part 1)
>>
>>4960128

(Part 2)

You nod.

That sounds… disturbing, honestly. But that’s probably a long way off being a problem.

“I think I’m starting to see auras.” You admit after a beat.

“I wouldn’t be surprised.” Gareth replies. “Fie is really quite something, isn’t she?” He asks, sounding awed.

For a moment, you think he’s making a comment on her as she lands a truly impressive spinning jump-kick on Cinder, prompting them both to pause in the aftermath, evidently satisfied for the time being.

Then you realise that the bright red flare you saw wasn’t Cinder, it was Cinder and Fie. And Gareth was seeing them close up.

“Yeah, she’s…”

“Blinding.” Gareth finishes with a smile. “I suppose you’re wondering what the next step to developing your aura is?” He asks.

“Yes.” You admit with a nod.

“Practice. Lots and lots of practice.” Gareth replies with a sardonic sort of tone.

“Makes sense.” You agree.

You manage to distract them at least momentarily with pats and in Aron’s case a rough polish with the cuff of your sleeve, but they’re very clearly eager for more play.

When you go outside, it’s cold and it’s raining steadily.

It’s not too bad and the wind isn’t howling like it was last night, but it’d still be a miserable slog if you tried to go anywhere today.

“I don’t think we’re getting anywhere today.” Gareth says, shaking his head. “What’re you going to do?” He asks.

“Just going to do a few laps of the rocks.” You reply as your team and the young pokemon that have taken a shine to you crowd behind you.

You can see the Arcanine has already come around the other way and is watching you curiously, heedless of the rain.

“Ah.” Gareth nods. “Don’t stay out too long.” He advises. “Adversity is a good way to train your spirit, but you’ve got to set an example as well.” He notes, nodding to your pokemon.

You nod and he goes back inside.

You start out at a light jog. Your pokemon and the young wild pokemon follow.

Long story short :
Team is actually made of
Fluffy, eevee, our starter
Volta, Shinx
Syurm, sewaddle
Kay O-o, a Jangmo-o.
We finished road 1 and started road 2 in direction of a town with a bug gym.
We met Fie on road 1, the fire gym champion we have a thing for (and she might have a thing for us, idk). She as been of great help so far, providing valuable insight on travelling, training and fighting. On road 1, we met Garett, an aura guardian. Although nice, it looks like dealing with people is not one of his strength. We started to learn more about Aura with him.
After a couple of victories against trainer, we reached road 2. A big storm incoming, we setted up a camp thanks to syurm, acting as shelter to a wide array of local species. Right now, we can't travel because of the weather. We are currently training and bonding with small pokemon under the supervision of bigger guardians. A Growlith, Fennekin and Aron might agree to tag with us.

QM insisted that we will need a big rooster; one of the anon is dead set on Growlith while I'm set on Aron and Fennekin even though I dream of a Talonflame later.

Also, our parents are Jessie and James gone good side of the law

It’s been a minute since you went for a proper run.

You don’t really see yourself as the fastest runner around. You’re better at distance running.

You decide that, all things considered, overdoing it in the rain probably isn’t the best idea and settle on just four laps.

Which is still a respectable distance to run, given how wide the base of the hillock actually is.

It also gives you enough time to appreciate Syurm’s handiwork:

It’s honestly stunning: Apparently, she and Cinder have got an eye for aesthetic as well as architectural sense, since there’s no sign of the grass and sticks they clad the pavilion in, just the white-grey of translucent silk that shimmers in the light wind and rain.

You’re definitely going to have to get pictures.

(Part 1)
>>
>>4962160

(Part 2)

You make steady progress doing your laps.

Rufflet falls behind after the first lap and takes off instead, flying past everyone.

Kay O-o stays close to you and Arcanine, but as you get into the second lap, Fluffy and Volta catch up, apparently having warmed up to you.

Aron is only lagging behind instead of being hopelessly lapped and shows no sign of giving up, which is impressive as hell, since they’re not known for their speed.

Vulpix, Fennekin and Growlithe meanwhile seem to be in a bit of a race between one another.

By the time you’ve started the last lap, they’ve forgotten all about everyone else and have pulled ahead of you.

It’s all you can do to keep up now and as you round the bend onto the home stretch, they all put on a final burst of speed.

You fully expect the Growlithe to win, but to your surprise, the Fennekin bounds ahead, before stopping just past the entrance to the rockpile and starts yipping and jumping, apparently having ‘won’.

There’s no time for much celebration though. You slow up and open the door for everyone before going in behind them. You’re soaked and the wind really has some bite to it now, but you feel wide awake, alert and energetic.

Your team also seems ready for more and by how the Arcanine gives you a friendly bump, he enjoyed the run as much as anyone.

Well, it’s to be expected, you suppose. If you don’t keep moving, the fatigue catches up.

You take about five minutes to stretch and warm down after your run, before retrieving your towel and going over to the fire and start drying off your team.

You start with Kay O-o, since he’s the least tired and also the easiest to dry before weaving onto everyone else as Syurm comes down from the canopy where she was doing touch-ups.

Once you’re done with your team, you move onto the wild pokemon, who initially struggle, before settling down and letting you work.

All except Rufflet, who you give up on trying to dry after he flies across the other side of the fire, the picture of offended dignity, when you try and dry him.

Beside you, Syurm chitters for attention and you ‘dry’ her off as well, despite the fact she doesn’t need it, before she settles down with the others for the time being.

“You’re really good at that.” Fie notes from across the fire. “Wild pokemon usually aren’t that friendly with strangers.”

“Really?” You ask, startled.

“Yeah. Most times pokemon are a lot more skittish or standoffish.” Fie confirms. “And yet, three hours around you and these guys are this relaxed? That’s an achievement.”

“Huh.”

Despite everything, it’s still pretty early. The rain didn’t look like it was going to let up though.

It’s a good thing you packed as much food as you did.

“I kind of want them to tag along.” You admit.

“I’d give good odds that they want to come with you by now.” Fie replies, looking up from her pokedex. “Got to admit, you’ve got excellent taste: Growlithe are loyal, Vulpix are adorable and Aron… even if they can be a bit of a pain with their diets, are also adorable.” She adds. “So far as from the perspective of a trainer, you’ve got my fullest endorsement as well.” She continues drily. “Vulpix and Ninetails are good at disrupting anything your opponent might have planned. Not quite on the same level as Zubat and its evolutions can, but still pretty good. Growlithe and Arcanine meanwhile are superb attackers. I’ve got a couple myself for my Gym teams.”

“How about Aron?” You ask curiously.

They’re a common enough pokemon in Arnet, but you’ve not exactly made a point on reading up on their ecology. And you’ve got only a basic idea of the more advanced strategies for battling.

“They’re probably the most commonly seen pokemon in the teams of League hopefuls.” Fie says. “They can hit really, really hard, they’re really tough and here at least, pretty common.” She adds. “No real reason not to have one on your team.”

Well that’s good to know, but you suppose Fie has a bit of a bias towards Fire-types.

“What about Fennekin and Rufflet?” You ask.

“Well, Fennekin is adorable as well.” Fie replies. “I thought she was going to be a bit of a foregone conclusion, since they’re very rare and Delphox are incredibly powerful.” She admits. “Rufflet, a lot of people don’t bother with.” She says. “Which is a shame, because Braviary are the pokemon of choice for search and rescue here for reason. Properly trained, they’ve got the endurance to fly for days, even with a passenger - and they’re stupid strong as well. A lot of people underestimate that. It wouldn’t be the first time someone’s stared stupidly at a Golem getting Sky Dropped.”

You nod. That is indeed impressive.

“Up to you though.” She says.

Well. You didn’t really have any expectations, but Fie’s certainly given you some things to think about there.

Okay, so update in a bit, but going back over this thread and last, the list of items mentioned OOC or suggested as monologue looks a bit like this:

Fishing rod.
Travelling clothes.
A flashlight.
A headlamp and caving gear.
A grooming kit.
Pokemon toys.

As for TMs, they're not a thing in this Quest, you've just got to dedicate time to teaching and practice of the move in question.

You decide to check the forecast before anything else.

Looking at what’s on the radar and the written report, it’s expected to rain until midday tomorrow, but there is a short break in the weather that should reach you around noon.

In your experience, that’s going to equate to a few hours of patchy cloud you could use to potentially make some distance towards Newport. You won’t get all the way there, but there’s a roadhouse that you might be able to get to, or at least get of the way to before the rain returns.

“Penny for your thoughts?” Fie asks as the silence stretches.

“Well, there’s supposed to be a break in the weather in a couple of hours.” You note.

“Mm. Kind of hard to know whether to make a run for the roadhouse or stay put until tomorrow.” Fie agrees.

“Also, just thinking of a shopping list for when we reach Newport.” You add.

“Top of that list is going to be some new clothes.” Fie says. “Between the blood on your pants and all the rest, there’s no salvaging what you were wearing yesterday.”

“Mm. Not to mention the rest. It’s a good thing I made some decent money battling yesterday.” You reply. “Besides, I think I owe you a nice meal.” You add.

“You don’t.” Fie says. “Don’t get me wrong, I’m not forgetting about that, but don’t you dare go spending money on me like that when you’ve got expenses that take priority and your family to think of.” She adds pointedly. She softens a little. “Thanks for the thought though.”

Well. That wasn’t the reaction you were expecting.

Ok, balls assignment time.
Do we want to catch 'em all? I'd like to keep a ball for a fletchling later on the road.
So far, I'm confortable with taking with us Aron, Fennekin and Growlith (in that order).
Vulpix not that much, would prefer the snow kind.
Ruffet, prefer not. Dead weight until evolution, which should happen fairly late.

“Alright.” Fie says, nodding. “I’ll go get my stuff out of your tent then.” She says, standing. “Hey, Cinder!” She calls.

With that, she and her Blaziken head into your tent.

A few moments later, Cinder leaves and heads out.

on the subject of TMs, they could be Technical Manuals rather than Technical Machines, and only be used for weird moves like secret power or in cases where a pokemon has struggled to learn a move otherwise. change them from machines to being like, a booklet and video on common problems with teaching the move, the most important benchmarks and methods, and other general trainer-relevant things about the move.
hm...thinking about this kind of makes me want to run a pokemon or pokemon-like quest where, like, the trainer's ability to train pokemon is well crunched out with stats for lots of different areas of expertise and styles. like, a trainer being better at teaching moves that involve short bursts of energy vs sustained effort. kind of food for thought

Growlithe is a great mount-in-future, Vulpix and Aron fill roles that I'd like to see more of in Alex's team. Rufflet is a pretty fun little bugger.

At the moment Alex's team is seeming very offensively focused and aggressive, except for Syurm.

You’ve been turning the question of who to catch over in your head all morning.

The only thing you’re really sure on is that you don’t really want to catch the little terrorist who shredded your jacket and the arm inside it.

Vulpix, you’re not that sold on either, but you’re sure your sister will absolutely adore her.

Growlithe, Aron and Fennekin meanwhile, are all pokemon that you’re dead-set on.

When you reach the fire, your team are all awake, along with the wild ones and their guardians.

Syurm is absent, but hasn’t gone very far:

Cinder’s back and is digging Fie’s tent frame from out of the canopy and replacing it with several fresh poles constructed out of sticks with Syurm’s help. They really make a good team.

“So, you all want to come with me?” You ask, kneeling down in front of the four you’ve been playing with all morning.

They nod eagerly.

You set out four balls on the ground, before looking to Vulpix and Ninetails.

“I think you’d get along better with my sister.” You say, looking between them carefully.

Ninetails sits and looks at you for a long moment before giving a nod, apparently mollified by this compromise. Vulpix looks a little disappointed, but not by much.

(Part 1)

(Part 2)

You turn to Arcanine and Delphox.

“You’re okay with this?” You ask.

They both nod.

“Alright.” You say, before you pick up each poke ball, one by one and tap each of the four standing in front of you.

This is followed by a series of clicks as each ball locks and the last two, containing Fennekin and Vulpix, disappear to the PC, where your mum will be able to take them out and look after them properly.

Once this is taken care of, you let Growlithe and Aron back out for the time being. Rufflet, just watches you from the sidelines, evidently not put out by your having ignored him.

Arcanine, Ninetails and Delphox however, appear to consider your business as concluded as they wander off to their respective broods, leaving you with your team.

Nicknames, nicknames, nicknames…

You’ll have to think of some later.

For now, you’ve got a tent to pack.

Fie has packed her stuff and is busy cleaning the poles of her tent while Cinder and Syurm finish shoring up the shelter with the new poles they’ve made, so dismantling your tent and repacking doesn’t take very long.

Once you’re done, a glance outside reveals the rain hasn’t let up yet and a look at your watch shows you’ve got about an hour to kill.

Not enough time to get any meaningful training done, but sitting around waiting for the weather isn’t very productive.

At the same time, you’re going to want to hurry and you don’t want to be absolutely buggered tomorrow when the weather actually breaks.

For the time being however, you release them and almost immediately, you’re being affectionately mobbed, before the two start play fighting and running around in a carefree game of tag.

You get the impression they’re going to be the best of friends, since they seem to have the same Jolly attitude.

They both also seem to be just a hair stronger than everyone else on your team barring Kay O-o.

You play for a while longer until Gareth goes to check outside, then gives you a thumbs up.

In general, for names, IMO they should be short and unambiguous (no verbs, nothing that sounds almost like a move name, etc.), so that the trainer can call them out quickly and without confusion. Additionally, Alex has sort of tended to slightly silly or cute names, so I think I'd like to stick to that.

For Aron:
Rock Head and Jolly suggest that this pokemon is gonna charge ahead and whack stuff.
Cutesy names:
Ronron
Dots
Rusty
Aglet
Copper
Tough names:
Ironside
Stark
Dagger

Growlithe:
This Growlithe is going places. Jolly is pure gas for Arcanine.

Cuter names:
Any dog names (please no)
Sunny
Hotdog

Fast names:
Blitzen
Char
Sirocco, or Gibli, or Samoon. Hot winds in various geographic locales

I'd also be fine with Apollo.
Fennekin:
Bit of a shame she has a Nature that prevents her from being quite as effective of a sweeper as she could be. But Magician has always been an ability that interested me, and together with Careful suggests that she's rather tricky - even without taking the Vulpix Alex has gotten a disruptive Fire type fox, though probably more along the lines of a weird debuffer than a status-inflicter. Maybe it'll work out...I'm a bit skeptical.

Cute names:
Fennel, or other plant names, given that this line picks up a stick at some point.
Nibbles

Kit would be alright.

Magic names:
Hecate
Pythia (Delphox's name being a reference to the Oracle of Delphi)
Vesta

You get back to the road without incident this time. Partially because all the nearby pokemon are mostly taking shelter and partly because Fie and Cinder are leading this time.

When you get to the road and turn back to your campsite, you have to stare for a good, solid minute.

You release Syurm so she can see what she’s created:

The pavilion she’s woven is a huge cone of iridescent silk, sitting atop the rocks and making its way to the ground. It’s also showing no sign of damage from the rain and wind, which is a testament to its sturdy construction.

At this distance, it looks like an art piece and you wholeheartedly agree with Fie’s wish to get a picture.

Once you have, you return Syurm to her ball, as she’s starting to shiver, then set off.

The road is wet, but it hasn’t turned completely to mud and you make good time.

The wind is still chill though and after about half an hour, you’re really feeling it. To the point where Cinder hangs back to walk beside you, although you can’t tell if it’s because Fie asked her to or because she noticed you’re struggling.

You don’t meet anyone or anything on the road and the sky clears somewhat as you walk, but there’re still stark black clouds off to the west, threatening more rain soon.

You’ve still got a while to go though.

“C’mon. Let’s just go.” You say. “Before the rain comes again.”

Looking out over the paddocks and bushland to the west, you've still got time before the rain reaches you, but you've also got about five hours between you and the roadhouse.

“You should’ve packed a coat.” Fie notes.

“I should’ve.” You agree as you all pick up the pace.

The track is actually really, really well kept. It looks like it was recently resurfaced, because you make exceptional time.

By the time the rain reaches you, the sun is starting to set, giving you a spectacular view out to the west through the last gaps in the cloud and out to your east where things are spotty.

As you look, you see a shimmer, a flash of red and white that might just have been a cloud, then the gorgeous sunset again.

“At least the view is nice.” Fie observes as you all keep the pace you’ve been maintaining basically all afternoon.

You’re glad you’ll have a half day of rain tomorrow before things clear for good. You’re going to need some of that for how sore you’re going to be. At least the last two days have let you wear your boots in.

You reach the lonely building on the track just as the rain starts pouring again, making it hard to think with the percussive din on the tin roof of the front porch.

The center is about three times bigger than the one in Greenshoot town and two stories. Accommodation and facilities for days like today, from what your mother told you. There’s actually a rotation on who mans the roadhouses so nobody gets stuck in the middle of nowhere for too long.

Contraire to your expectations, it’s actually fairly lively inside. There’s nearly a dozen trainers of different ages in the main foyer and you can here chatter from what you assume is a mess hall off to the left, while there’s a laundry and showers off to the left, opposite a small shopping kiosk that has basic supplies available.

You head up to the counter.

“How far did you three run?” The nurse asks, looking the three of you over. “You look awful.”

“About four… five hours?” Fie said, frowning. “Since lunch, anyway.”

“Goodness.” The nurse says. “I’ll look over your teams, but there’s a bit of a wait.” She said. “And we’re a little tight on space. Are you alright sharing a room?” She asked.

“That’s fine.” Fie assures before Gareth can reply. “Also, my friend here got attacked by a Rufflet last night.” She says, gesturing to you. “I stitched him up as best as I could, but could you have a look?”

You roll up your sleeve helpfully.

“I’ll do that once you three have washed up and gotten changed into dry clothes.” She assures.

“Thank you.” You reply as all three of you pile your poke balls into the provided trays.

“It’s what we’re here for.” The nurse replies, handing over a room key to Fie.

(Part 1)

Past the laundry is the showers and locker rooms.

You all put your clothes in the drier and go wash up.

It’s a relief, after four days walking, to have a hot shower. You hadn’t noticed exactly how bad you were all starting to smell until now.

You wash quickly. There’s a time restriction right now with the roadhouse being as full as it is.

Once you’re done washing and drying up, you’ve got to wait for another ten minutes before your clothes have finished drying.

Once you’re all dressed, Fie heads upstairs to put all your things away, while Gareth goes to save you all a seat in the mess hall.

This leaves you to go back up to the counter.

“Right. Come out back and let’s see the damage.” The nurse says.

You follow the nurse out back and take a seat on a stool.

After retrieving some equipment, she unwraps your arm and peels away the dressing.

You wince. That Rufflet really made a mess.

“Your friend did a good job.” The nurse admits as she cleans the stitches with something that you’re ninety percent sure is composed of liquid fire. “These are going to scar, but they’re not going to be as bad as they could be.” The nurse informs you. “Change the dressing once a day and keep the sutures clean. Give it about a week and they can come out.” She adds as she applies another dressing.

“Thank you.” You reply.

The nurse nods.

“It’s what I’m here for.”

“No, I didn’t get caught in the rain...” You reply, before explaining the events of the previous two days. “...So, yeah. We got rained on a little before we made it here, but nothing serious.” You finish. “How’re things at home? Dad’s not wasting money on any terribly thought-out schemes, is he?”

No, your sister has been keeping him in check.” Your mother replies. “Though, he is looking for something to fill his time.

“I had an idea about that.” You reply. “How about I try catching a Miltank. And maybe a Tauros.”

You’re left staring at the empty chair your mother just vacated for a moment before Chloe takes her place.

Hey, what’s up?” She asks.

“Just figured I’d check how things are going now you’ve got to manage everything.” You say as you notice your mother return holding Vulpix behind Chloe.

Arceus, I don’t know how you didn’t go on a journey sooner.” She replies, shaking her head. “Dad’s got a lot of talents, but not thinking things through has got to be the biggest.

“It is exhausting.” You agree. “So, I thought you could use some company.” You nod over her shoulder.

Chloe turns to your mother then stares dumbly for a moment.

Bro…” She says, sounding about as floored as she looks.

You grin.

“Take care of her and she’ll take care of you.” You say. “Mind Mike though.” You advise.

Him? Not my problem. Stomped out of town shortly after you did.” Chloe replies offhandedly as she takes Vulpix off your mother and hugs her close before letting her settle on her lap.
You chat for a while longer, before the phone gives you an advisory that you’re getting close to having to pay it for more time rather than it being free.

Alright, see you.” Chloe says with a wave.

“See you.” You reply.

The feed cuts and you’re left looking at a blank screen.

The news that Mike has left town is surprising. You guess Fie pissed him off so much that he decided to make himself your problem further down the line.

The only question is whether he’s going to Newport first like you or headed north, up to Silveridge.

You’ve been eating well, but you’re starving after this afternoon.

After you do rejoin Fie and Gareth, nobody speaks for several minutes while you all just focus on eating.

Fie finishes first.

You don’t know how much she had, but Gareth is looking at her with something like incredulity and defensiveness over his own plate.

“How is your arm?” She asks, turning to you.

“The nurse said the stitches are fine. Just need to keep changing the dressing and keep it clean.” You reply.

Fie nods.

“Good to know.” She says.

The food is actually surprisingly good.

Your mother doesn’t do the cooking at the pokemon center. That job is handled by a roster of volunteers from the town and the quality varies from really good, to okay, to ‘burned to a crisp’ depending on who is rostered on.

You suppose out at these places, the nurse has to handle basically everything, which makes the food quality even more of a surprise.

When you’re all finished, you return your plates and sit back down to digest for a while.

"So Gareth. You never actucally said what your travel plans are." You say after a comfortable pause.

"Me?" Gareth asks, then shrugs. "Pretty straight forward. Your path is probably going to run fairly close to mine." He says. "I've got to visit the four caves in the order their names suggest, before journeying to Guardian cave." He explains. "Although, I'd like to visit the shrines at the lakes and major mountains as well." He adds.

"So, you mean you'll be visiting Genesis, Prover's and Challenger's caves as well." Fie clarified.

"That's right." Gareth confirms.

You've got to admit, this does fit pretty neatly with your plans as far as Saltcoast City.

Afterwards though, is another matter entirely.

"If you're curious if I'm up for another lap or so of Arnet, Alex, I'm all for it, I've just got to chase up some stuff." Fie says. "That's going to mean an extended leave of absence, which I'm not quite sure if I qualify for just yet." She adds. "We're good as far as Saltcoast though." She assures.

"Just checking." You assure.

"Organising is important." Gareth agrees. "But life isn't always so cooperative."

You nod.

“A few things.” You confirm, tapping out the list you’ve been toying with, along with a Technical Manual for Secret Power underlined at the top of the list. “Above everything though, that Technical Manual.” You say, showing the two the list.

“That’s not a bad idea.” Gareth admits.

“I know, but it could be a real lifesaver.” You reply. “Anything else you think might be useful?”

“That’s true.” Fie concedes, then looks thoughtful. “A camper’s shower.” She says at last. “I don’t know about you two, but after three days on the road, I kind of needed one.”

You’re quiet for a while, as you try to think about how to proceed with your team and training.

“Penny for your thoughts?” Fie asks.

“Just trying to think on how to train my team. You reply. “And if I ought to get any more pokemon.”

Fie nods.

“That’s fair. You want my advice?” She asks.

Considering her profession, you’re sure she could give you a lot. The fact she’s giving you the choice of it is kind of reassuring though.

“Sure.” You reply. You’re not so proud as to ignore advice from a pro.

“Okay, so you’re not ready to face Ethan.” Fie says frankly. “You’re getting there, but you’re going to need more training and practice.” She adds. “When we get to Newport, take a day or two and teach your team some basic moves. Maybe get a battle or two in on the way there.”

She pauses, apparently marshalling her thoughts.

“More long-term, you’re going to want at least one Water-type and one Fighting-type sooner rather than later and a Flying-type. The former two because you’re going to be finding a lot of Rock and Fire-types on your journey. Water-types are also just good to have around camp.” She adds. “As to a Flying-type… they’re invaluable. If you get in trouble, they can carry messages to rescuers and guide them to you.”

She ticks this item off on her fingers, before moving on again, ticking a third finger.

“And lastly, you’re going to want to catch some more pokemon so your team has some depth, so you can give your pokemon some rest occasionally and in case any of them are injured, you’re going to have another that can cover their role.” She said. “That help?”

That’s actually a lot to digest, but it all sounds like good advice.

“Yeah, that’s really helpful.” You agree.

After a moment’s thought, you take out your pokedex and tab through to your registered pokemon, before pulling up the profiles for Aron, Fennekin and Growlithe and one after the other, after some thought, you register nicknames for all of them.

You’ve been thinking on this subject all afternoon.

Aron, you call Rusty, following the logic a lot of people you’ve met tend to follow for nicknames. Namely, a healthy dose of irony and stating the exact opposite.

You’re pretty sure Aron and its evolutions can’t rust and even if they could, it’d probably be a serious health issue for them.

Either way, it sounds good.

Growlithe meanwhile, you decided pretty early you were going to call Blitz. You could’ve gone the same route as with Aron and called him Blue, but you know damn well how fast Arcanine can run. It just feels fitting.

And finally, after some thought for Fennekin, you decide on Sage.

You almost go with Sophia, but that’d be kind of weird, so Sage it is. The fact that there’s a lot of connotations for wisdom, exorcism and burning attached to the herb is just a nice bonus.

Of course, you’re going to have to get the three of them used to their new nicknames, but if Volta, Fluffy and Syurm are any indication, that won’t be a problem.

That taken care of, you navigate back to the main menu.

>>
>>4980072
>>4980077

You think on what Fie said about training, then you navigate to a trainer's resource on moves and start comparing move lists and short demonstration videos.

To your surprise, there's actually some overlap in your team with regards to who can learn what.

Blitz and Sage can learn Flame Charge, for one thing, though Blitz you'd normally need a Technique Manual. You might be able to do it with Fie's help though. Hell, she might even have that TM.

Fluffy and Volta can learn Quick Attack, though in Volta's case, it'd take a bit of effort.

Rusty can learn Rock Smash, which will probably come in handy, even outside of battling.

He can also learn Roar, along with Kay O-o, though it appears you're going to need to evolve him before he gains access to a wider move pool.

Syurm, you're alread dead-set on teaching Secret Power, but she should also be able to pick up Bug Bite with relative ease.

Beyond that, there're a few moves each everyone should be able to pick up with a bit of practice.

Wow, you're tired. Not that that should really be a surprise. You've been pretty non-stop the last few days.

Pretty shortly, Fie and Gareth are yawning as well.

"'S like that." Fie mumbles. "Still got a way t' go tomorrow. Let's go sleep."

Gareth nods sleepy agreement.

The three of you amble out of the mess hall and up the stairs to the second level. After some searching, you find your room and wait outside for Fie to change before you and Gareth both change before climbing into one of the bunks.

No sooner than you've settled, you're out like a light. No dreams this time, just the oblivion reserved for the exhausted.

You sleep soundly and deeply and wake up alert and refreshed in the morning.

When you check your pokedex, to your find that it's seven in the morning. More or less right on time for your regular wake up.

You can hear Gareth snoring above you.

Man. You must've been exhausted to sleep through that.

Looking to the other side of the room, you see Fie is bundled up in her blankets and likewise, sleeping soundly, though one of her feet is hanging out the side of the bed.

Just to be clear, can we review our team before leaving? We are limiting to bring around 6 of them, right? It should be
Fluffy
Volta
Syurm
Kay O o
Rusty
Blitz or Sage
Have we decided which one to bring around?
>>
>>4981312
This was decided by catch-order. Yes, you're limited by catch-order.

So, you presently have:

Fluffy
Syurm
Volta
Kay O-o
Blitz
Rusty

Sage is presently at home. If you do want to swap someone, now would be the time.

As an unrelated aside:

Meowth.

I've not actually come up with a good idea for him.

Just so normalised for Alex he doesn't really register as strange or went his own way?

I'm just waiting for a game in Game Freeak's take on poke-Australia.

Forget the poison types:

Fighting\Dark Doduo.

Fighting Kangaskhan.

Talonflame and Starraptor fucking everywhere.

True fear in this country isn't the snakes or the spiders or crocodiles.

It's the birds. And buck kangaroos.
>>
>>4981331
Not to be depressing but how long would you say a Meowth lives for? Maybe there's just a little Meowth statue in the living room that we catch our parents look at fondly every so often.
>>
>>4981369
Hell if I know. Real domestic cats can live for twenty years though.

And characters aging in pokemon is fucky as hell.
>>
>>4981363
Don´t forget the magpies... Guess Corviknight would get a full offensive version instead of being a Skarmory clone.

Then there´s Pokemon Africa... Oddly enough we already have most of its biome from Unova.
Was Unova actually South Africa all along?

Anyway the ideas i had were:

>Ground type Luxray (warm earth tones instead of blue and white spots instead of yellow) with Flash Fire, Intimidate and Technician (-SpA +Speed) with mainly Ground type move-set with some fire type moves here and there.
>Water/Ground Camerupt with Water Absorb, Water Veil and Contrary
>Meowth regional - Electric (bright yellow hariy house cat) with Static, Fluffy and Galvanize -> into Purrbolt (imagine Persian with Raikou aesthetics) with Volt Absorb, Huge Power and Galvanize
>Dingo themed Poochyena/Mightyena
>Water/Dragon Kommo-o and Water/Dark Krookodile
>Rock type Gogoat
>Poison/Dark Malamar with Water Absorb, Poison touch and Contrary
>Ground /Steel type Helioptile with both Water absorb, Flash fire and Iron Spikes (reworked as a medium bulk, physical attacker)
>Fire/Ghost Trevenant
>Dark type Tasmanian Devil themed Yungoos
>Fightin and Poison variants for Oricorio

Etc.

>>4981372
Depends on the breed but generally between 15 to 30 years.
Guess Meowth would be grandpa aged or he´s haunting our parents as a Ghastly now.
>>
>>4981369
Persian cats live up to 20 years so he should still be around albeit acting like a grandpa.
Burmese cats (that match Meowth the most in looks) are the most long lived at around 30 years average.

You slip out of bed and quickly throw your clothes on, then head downstairs.

You're actually one of the first people up and the nurse has just finished putting out the food when you walk into the mess hall.

After a light breakfast, you get your team back and feed them as well, then head outside.

It's not raining right this minute, but by the forecast, the weather isn't going to break until around lunch.

You still manage to gather up some sticks and set up a few lateral ladder runs for yourself and your team though.

Once you're good and warmed up, you turn to your team.

If you are volunteering for drawing them go ahead.

Let me describe the mentioned:

Ground Luxray - Brown and Beige body tones with White accents where the normal Yellow accents on Luxray are.

Water type Camerupt - Green-brown body tones and its humps look like geysers.

Electric Meowth - A yellow very fluffy Furball with a Silver coin on its head (meant as a special attacker).
Purrbolt - Persian with sabre-cat like silver teeth, yellow-black striped body, a tail similar to Raichu and three spiky orbs floating around it (being remains of its former fluff).

Regional Mightyena - Ground type - Beige and White thin fur tones with a very obvious bloody mouth.

Water/Dragon Kommo-o - Fully quadripedal, fish-scale shaped scales altering in blue and green, tail has eel-like fin and feet are webbed.

Water-Darl Krookodile - instead of having a comically small upper body and oversized lower body it has a wide chest/shoulders and gorilla-like thick arms with a tiny lower body only meant for swimming. Snout similarly looks more like a wide beak but still recognizably a crocodile maw.

Rock type Gogoat - Gold-Brown-White color scheme - looks more like an Alpine Ibex

Poison/Dark Malamar - Looks more like a jelly-fish from Spongebob

Ground/Steel Helioptile - Drops the frills for the Horned-Devil lizard look. Same color scheme and a bit bulkier.

Fire/Ghost Trevenant - Looks like a burned down Eucalyptus tree with small seed-like embers floating around it.

Dark Tasmanian devil Youngoos - Paint it Black and Purple. Maybe change up the hairdo of its evolution.

Oricrio - Fighting - Red-White colour scheme, wider leggs and has tuffs of feathers on its legs that look like leg-guards.
Oricrio - Poison - Purple-Green colour scheme, smokes a cigarette and its head feathers form a beret.

Don't worry about it. At this point in the thread, it's not really an issue and people talking, theorising and coming up with ideas is always great to see.

As for concepts... I mean if you want to. Doesn't sit right with me asking for art done without recompense, but if you want to have some fun with the ideas, you don't have to ask me about it. You do you.

I may commission some stuff later in the piece though, mind. Depends how things shake out.

"Okay..." You say, looking at everyone, then the lateral ladders you've been running.

With a bit of rearranging you have a sudden-death course.

"Right, this is what I want you to do..." You say, before you start running to the various markers in sequence, then back to your start, then onto the next and so on.

Your team watches you solemnly, before they start joining in before you're done.

You barely manage to avoid getting bowled over as everyone starts running the course. You're not really surprised to see that Rusty is the slowest of your pokemon, but it's certainly not for lack of trying:

The little guy has some agility to him in how he manages his turns and he's actually bounding as he runs for that little bit extra in terms of speed.

Syurm meanwhile, appears to have found a solution to her own comparative lack of speed: She's spitting string at wherever she wants to go and reeling herself to it like the silk is elastic. It's actually kind of comical how she'll occasionally zip past everyone else.

Fluffy, Kay O-o, Blitz and Volta meanwhile appear to be racing.

Kay O-o has a very clear advantage born of experience, but Blitz isn't far behind him and Volta is keeping pace with Blitz with a certain stubborness. She's got a competitive streak.

Fluffy meanwhile just seems to be enjoying himself.

(Part 1)
>>
>>4982232
(Part 2)

When most of your team has completed a set, barring Rusty, who's managed three-quarters of a set, you stop your timer and set it as a countdown.

"Alright." You say. "Now, let's try that again, only faster." You say.

Your team line up again.

"Go."

To your total lack of surprise, Kay O-o manages to beat the finish time handily, while Blitz and Volta come in ahead but slightly slower while Fluffy finishes on time.

Syurm is left at the top of the course when the timer chimes, more or less where she was last time and Rusty isn't far behind her, definitely past where he was prior.

"Good job." You say, paying out complements and scritches to everyone for a good morning's work.

A fat droplet of water lands on your back and you look up in time to see the heavens open up again.

Volta's fur bristles, then there's a zap! and a jolt of electricity connects her and Kakuna.

Incredibly, Kakuna is still up, but very obviously hurt.

"Oh. Shit." Ross says, apparently legitimately surprised. "Wow, she's a strong little kitty, isn't she? Kakuna, Poison Sting." He orders.

Before you can reply or give orders, Kakuna spits a hail of purple needles at Volta and it's your turn to stare in shock as Volta is peppered and nearly pushed out of the arena.

"Volta, circle left and Thundershock!" You order, hoping she can outspeed Kakuna.

"Poison Sting again, Kakuna." Ross orders, evidently confident that Kakuna has things well in hand.

Volta follows your order to the letter, bounding to the left and dodging another hail of purple barbs as her fur stands on end and builds up a charge, before releasing it with another minor thunderclap that knocks Kakuna over onto its back.

To your total shock, Kakuna shoots a string shot at the nearby awning and rights itself, but Volta isn't done, bounding forward, fur still on-end from accumulated charge and tackles Kakuna, causing yet another minor thunderclap and launching Kakuna end over end to fetch up just outside the arena.

>Volta has learned Spark.

"Kakuna is out!" Chris declares.

Ross recalls Kakuna, even as it tries to right itself again, giving you an easy grin as you get back under the awning and out of the rain.

"That was pretty good." Ross complements, offering his hand.

"I'll say. Your Kakuna is tough." You note.

Ross nods and scratches the back of his neck in a sheepish sort of way.

"Ross's is just really getting into this. He went into the army straight out of high school and took up training when he got out." Chris explains. "This isn't really that intuitive to him as it is to you or me, but if there's one thing he absolutely excels at, it's conditioning and general training."

"Well that explains a lot." You admit, fishing out your pokedex just to have a look at Ross's Kakuna in detail.

You stare.

His Kakuna should be a Beedrill twice over by now, according to the stats you're looking at. It's no wonder it took Volta's hits so well.

You're broken out of your stupefication by a hearty laugh from Ross, followed by a slap on the shoulder.

"Arceus kid, you and Volta are something. Did you realise just how much of a power gap there was?" He asked.

"Not in those exact terms, no." You admit. "I just thought your Kakuna was a particularly tough one. I didn't realise you'd been training that much." You reply.

You pause.

"You said you hadn't gotten any badges yet." You note.

"We haven't." Chris confirmed. "We're on our way to go see Professor Connifer and register for the League. We came over from Unova and arrived the day before yesterday." He explains.

"Got caught by the rain though." Ross adds. "Anyway, that was a great battle. How about you and Chris go a round?" He suggests.

"Are you as strong as he is?" You ask Chris.

"Not quite, although if Volta's your strongest, you're going to struggle." He concedes.

"I've got one pokemon that's stronger." You venture.

"Well, I'm game if you are." He concedes as Volta purrs contently at all the headscratches she's getting from you. She seems pretty tired, but very proud of herself.

Ross takes the referee spot.

"On your marks." He says. "This'll be a one round show, victory condition is ring out or knockout. Begin when ready."

"Gastly, go!" Chris orders.

A quick glance at your pokedex reveals that yes, the only pokemon that you have that's really a match for it is Kay O-o as you said, though you could always try being tricky...

Your training in speed seems to have paid off, because Kay O-o closes the distance between himself and Gastly handily and comes in swinging his tail, slamming the club scale on the end right into Gastly's core, sending it flying back towards Chris's side of the arena and nearly out of it, as it gets a glancing hit with its tongue in return.

"You weren't kidding." He observes. "Where'd you catch that little guy?" He asks.

"The depths of Origin Cave." You reply. "In hindsight, it was a really stupid risk going down that far without any gear, but... well."

"It was stupid." Ross agrees. "Caving without proper equipment gets people killed. What if you'd gone down there and this storm had've blown in?"

You feel a chill. That definitely wouldn't have been good.

"We're probably not going to be able to check it out on the way to Greenshoot." Chris notes. "Shame. It's supposed to be kind of neat."

"Still, you're not a half bad trainer, if you've got a Dragon-type who'll listen to you without a badge to your name." Ross opines. "Always heard they were hard to work with."

You part ways there. Ross and Chris head for the front desk while you head back inside.

The mess hall has filled up a bit more now, but you still manage to find a seat and indulge Kay O-o and Volta in some well-deserved praise for their victories.

Volta seems kind of tired but preens nonetheless and Kay O-o takes your praise in stride.

After you've dried off a little, you recall them, before wandering over to the table where the girls are still absorbed with their discussion and map.

As you get closer, you overhear some of their discussion:

"...There's no track between Greenshoot and Lake Creedo, we'd need to blaze one ourselves if we tried to go between them." A brown haired girl asserts. "No, we should just- Oh." She stops abruptly as she notices you walking up, attracting the attention of all four of them.

"You looking for a battle?" A serious looking black-haired girl asks. "How many badges have you got?" She asks.

"None." You reply.

The girl shakes her head.

"'Fraid not." She says. "We've done the circuit a couple times before." She explains. "You've got some guts though." She admits.

"Is this your first time on the circuit?" The brown haired girl asks.

(Part 1)
>>
>>4990839
(Part 2)

"Yes." You reply, suddenly feeling sheepish. Now that you're closer, you can see that they're still in their sleepware and you can also pick that they've all got a few scars, evidently mementos of their journies.

"No shame in being a beginner." A third, blonde girl says, pushing a pair of glasses up her nose. "You did pretty good for yourself against those two." She adds, nodding to Ross and Chris.

"Thanks." You reply.

"Are we just going to leave him hanging?" The fourth girl, who appears to be the youngest, with dark brown hair asks.

"Course not. He's a Rookie." The first girl replies, before looking up at you seriously. "So, a battle is off the table." She prefaces. "It's not fair to just roll everyone, take their money and leave 'em with nothing, so we gave up accepting challenges from anyone with fewer than six badges." She explains.

"Instead, couple of years ago, we decided it'd be better if we helped people on their journies and focused on what we wanted to do after we stopped taking the gym challenge." The blonde continues.

"So, we've made a bit of a game out of it." The dark brown haired girl says. "One of us wants to be a Breeder. Another of us wants to be an Archaeologist. Another has eyes on Pokeathlon and another wants to get into Contests." She adds. "You pick who you want to help you and depending what we're focusing on, we'll give you something helpful."

"Ask for a kiss or anything though and you'll get an ass-kicking." The black haired girl warns.

"That's happened before, hasn't it?" You guess.

"More than once." The black haired girl confirms. "Most Youngsters are pretty polite, but some people your age or older can be real dicks." She adds. "So, whose help do you want?

"First thing's first, what are your names?" You ask.

"I'm Kathryn." The brown haired girl replies.

"I'm Jean." The blonde says, giving you a smile.

"I'm Martha." The black haired girl says, giving you a nod.

"And I'm Judy." The dark brown haired girl says, giving you a pleasant smile. "So, whose help do you want?"

Attitude.

Which I know is unhelpful given the limited dialogue and description, but there is *a little bit* of a tell.
>>
>>4990843
I'm going to guess:
Black haired (Martha): Pokeathlon or Archaeologist, because she's 'serious' and gives the kiss-warning
Brown haired (Kathryn): She doesn't want to blaze a trail, so she might also be Breeder or Contest, which are the more 'city' oriented professions
Blonde haired (Jean): Breeder; the first thing she did was reassure Alex and compliment his pokemon, the second was to comment about focusing on helping people, and she has a 'smile'. But she also has glasses, so she might be the Archaeologist
Dark brown haired (Judy): Contests? She has a 'pleasant smile' so maybe she's more appearance/show oriented than Jean

Ideally Alex gets the Pokeathlon girl, I think? Whoever she is, she'd probably gel best with him. So
>>Ask Kathryn for help.
since she's the only one I can 'guess' to be Pokeathlon, even if I'm not sure. Getting any of the others would still be cool though, maybe it'll expand Alex's horizons

"Okay, Jean." You say.

She grins and adjusts her collar, revealing a necklace with an amber centrepiece.

"Care to hazard a guess what my dream career is?" She asks.

"You're either the pokemon breeder or the archaeologist." You say confidently.

She nods.

"You're on the right track." She confirms. "Which is it?"

You frown and study the four closely.

Now you're paying more attention, you notice that while they're all wearing very practical, hard-wearing clothes, they've all very definitely got their own styles:

Jean is on the short side and her clothes are a little on the worn side and her hair, while long, is tied up in a french braid to keep it out of her way. You're also pretty sure showing off her necklace was a very blatant hint.

Martha is noticeably more athletic than the others and the tallest. You're pretty sure she could kick someone's ass if she wanted to.

Kathryn's smiling at you encouragingly as you think and her clothes have a definite lean towards 'farm practical' along with some pretty obvious padding and repair.

Judy meanwhile is easily the shortest and most 'delicate' of the group. Her clothes also look markedly newer and more expensive. She's also wearing a pair of blue bows in her hair that look disorientingly complicated to your eyes.

You grin.

"Archaeologist." You state. "And I'm pretty confident I can guess what the rest of you want to do as well." You add.

"Is that right?" Jean asks with a grin. "Well, you're right, I want to be an archaeologist." She confirms.

"How about the rest of us then?" Martha challenges.
