/qst/ - Quests

Pandora. The Vaults. The Corporations.

But this is not a tale Marcus would tell you, and these are not the characters you remember.

You will take the role of one of two characters, to decide the fate of them, their corporations, and Pandora itself.

CHOOSE A CHARACTER:
A. Admiral Mikey/ATLAS - You can't understand it, and yet, today you suddenly woke up SMART. As in, your are confident your inner monologue reflects that of at least a young adult when yesterday you were struggling with four syllable words, you are capable of basic algebra when you were before trying to figure out how math wasn't magic, and now you actually comprehend all the terrible things your advisors are telling you are happening to the Atlas Corporation and the Crimson Lance. The things YOU caused. You are the last of your illustrious bloodline, The Admiral of the Crimson Lance, and the de-facto CEO of the company blessed by very gods.

And you are also five years old.

Your heritage burns around you, your generals threaten to mutiny, and your rival corporations smell blood in the void. Can you wrest the Atlas Corporation back from the brink of Tartarus?

B. Jack/HYPERION - You feel different this morning. Everything feels different, in a way you can't describe completely, but in small parts. You still love your daughter, you still want to protect her, and you still desire to rise among the Hyperion corporate ranks and change the world.

But you no longer seem to find the idea of flaying puppies as a fun hobby to do. The memories that bite at you, your abusive grandmother, your dead wife, the boots of your superiors pressing down on you, fill you not so much with a murderous sense of revenge as you once thought, but a desire to gain revenge through sheer success, and to do the impossible.

---

I am mostly gauging interest in such a civ quest, and which character/corporation would people on /qst/ be most interested in. In the case of Jack, you don't necessarily have to play him as "Good" but the idea is that he will be a lot more competent, which includes toning down the sociopathic tendencies that drew in so many enemies Please bear in mind that I may arbitrarily choose one character over the other anyway, if I feel that I can do them more justice and have a better understanding of them, but I take player opinion to heart The game will likely be run on next Wednesday, or at least with occasional daily updates.

Hopefully the Crimson Lance general isn't dead yet.

I hate Jack. Still can't believe so many people voted for him being an amazing villain. Great villains are like Kerrigan of Starcraft 1 and Marche of Fantasy Tactics Advance. Now those two were fantastic villains.
>>
Also of note, during the story you won't necessarily play only Jack/Admiral Mikey. Depending on which character is chosen, you may see at times play perspectives from such characters as for Atlas General Knoxx, Commandant Steele or for Hyperion Mister Blake, Rhys, Claptrap, and several others.

Admiral Mikey (LOCKED)

I'll post some preliminary turns now and again, to flesh out Mikey

---

It's dark, the faint hint of morning sunlight streams through tinted smartglass, as you wake up unusually early today. Perhaps it is because your mind is still racing from your "epiphany".

You're still not sure how your vocabulary has increased dramatically. You wonder if you're now like the kid geniuses from TV. "Just like Billy Proton" you think. Well, not exactly, you don't feel like you know how to build a death ray anytime soon, and thank goodness you don't have a funny accent or a mutated head!

You look around and see your room. It's the same room you can remember growing up in. Around you see:
>A. Lots of toys. Toy guns. Toy vehicles. Action figures and mini-bots. Your digistruct costume machine.
>B. Video games. All the consoles you could ever want. Virutal-Holosuite. Your computer.
>C. Movies and comic books. Your personal fridge. A giant comfy couch. Walls plastered with posters signed by some of the biggest heroes in the galaxy.

>D. Lots of bots, from small plate like one zooming about the floor, cleaning toys such as blocks, or pirate cutlasses, to ones near your 5 year old size, waiting to be asked to join in on a journey your imagination leads you on. In the corner is a towering (in your eyes) advanced seeming bot, that seems to follow you everywhere you go, even if you don't understand it's garbled speech.

Apologies for the absence, I am still vested in this quest and will update for any amount of votes when I can. I intend to churn out several updates at least today, so after this post I'll update in at least 2 hour or sooner with 2+ votes.

I also combine tie votes, when appropriate.

Piled neatly in catalogs are the latest comic books, detailing super heroes, vigilantes, and the struggles between good and evil. Some of these are new editions that aren't even out for the general public yet.

Along your wall are posters of some of the greatest heroes in the Six Galaxies. There's Typhon Deleon, the so called First Vault hunter, whose discovery of the vault on Promethea lay the foundation for what Atlas is now. Sir Alistair Hammerlock, intrepid explorer, hunter, and cataloger of the rarest beasts in the galaxy.

You even have a poster of one of Atlas very own legends, Master Mccloud, three times awarded the Golden Lance and Stars by your father. Of all the boring reports you had to endure, listening to his stories about his adventurers and feats was the most exciting part of your day. Alas, he was sent to Pandora some time ago, and your advisors have said he was "too busy battling the lawless garbage and monsters" there to make any recent reports.

He was able to send you a sketch of himself he made, showing him brandishing his Eridian ray gun and deploying a scorpio turret, which you pinned on a part of your wall.

Looking at them, you feel a sense of. . .longing. For adventure. For the thrill. To see the Galaxy. Or at least, even the world beyond the walls of Atlas HQ.

There are a number of drones about. Some are for tidying up your room for you, when you can't be bothered (which was always), and . . .th𝘢t one, the big tall one that follows you around wherever you go. They say it's for your protection. But you wish a protector was someone you could talk to, as this one doesn't have a voice module and just talks in what you called 'robot language' which was just beeps and buzzes to you.

As you walk around, a much more friendly robotic voice chirps up, as in your corner a little white and red ball opens up and comes to life, hovering your way.

"Admiral!" it says in a cheery female voice, saluting you "You're up way earlier than usual! Oh, you didn't have another one of those 'bad' dreams again? I don't know what dreams are like, but the usual protocol is a hug and some warm milk."

"No thanks" you say to your friend bot "help me get dressed. I need to speak with my advisors."

"Huh? Do you mean like, an 'advisory meeting'?"

"Yes."

"But it's soo early right now! The sun isn't even up yet."

"Alright, fine, not right now. I need a meeting set up. Today."

"You're talking really funny today, Admiral, but okay! I'll just go ahead and change the schedules for- Uh oh! ERROR. I'm not authorized to send these orders! They have to go through-"

Before the drone could even finish, the door to your room opened. In walks an all too familiar, if very tired and very disgruntled face to you. Rear Admiral Thetis, your 'Second in Command', someone who was always there with everything you needed, such as blankets, snacks, and someone to explain concepts you really found hard.

"Admiral Mikey" she says, with a voice of someone trying to seem nice yet seethes with a quiet rage, the kind that always made you think twice about what it is you were doing "It is six in the morning. Six. I am very tired, I have not had my coffee. Why am I getting a notification you're trying to "make big plans" at this hour.

Do you remember what we talk about, about not "making big plans" before all the adu-" she coughs "'advisors' are awake?"

“-and so I need a meeting of the board today and a sit-rep!” you tell her.

There’s a moment of quiet, as Thetis face goes pale and her eyes wide. “Talos!” she exclaims.
In the corner of the room, your tall robotic protector whirrs to life, its red eye glowing. “Verify identity and location of Admiral Mikey!”

The robot scans the room, taking several passes over you.

“Identity confirmed: Admiral Michael Alexander VII. Location confirmed. Admiral remains unharmed.”

“Were there any security breaches?” her voice is shaky and she seems to tremble

“Negative. Confirm no breach of security over current 2009.8 day mission run time.”

“Uh. . .yeah” says your smaller robotic friend “I’ve been following my orders and watching over the Admiral Mikey too! He’s just been here in sleep mode since you tucked him into bed last night. Then he like, woke up and walked about the room. He’s talking funny today though.”

Thetis lets out a sigh, before looking at you again. Taking a very good look.

“I still can’t understand it. If you’re really Admiral Mikey, then tell me something only you and I would know. And don’t tell me your favorite food or color you tell just about everyone you meet.”

>Everyone thinks I bought my pet ratch, but only you know it was because I snuck out the base with Talos and took an egg back in [+Character Trait: Stealth. +Pet Ratch]
>I used to hate going to the weapon demonstration and firing range inspections for the Crimson Lance because they were loud and terrified me, but after watching a show about Torgue Engineers, I went to one and it became my favorite part of my Admiral duties [+Character Trait: Bravery]

>Everyone thinks I am scared of bugs due to stories, but only you know it was because I snuck out the base with Talos, abusing his internal security authority and then taking a sleeping Watchman's gate card. I was mesmerised by the outside till i ran into a Ratch nest. That's when you saved us from a Ratch swarm Talos was struggling with. I still get nightmares about that. [+Character Trait: Stealth. +Character Trait: Tech-use. +Character Trait: Cowardly (scared of direct confrontation, could be say willpower tests to not run from a battle)]

Really want to go for a tech ninja build, but gotta balance shit naturally. Really liking this quest idea despite not playing Borderlands 3, i'll keep write-in fagging i guess.

An alternative to cowardice could be having us and Talos have limited security access in general since Thetis doesn't want a repeat, up to you other anons, i'm fine with either.
>>
>>4931153
Oh, another idea! We could have Talos be much more independent, so we can't command him anymore. We couldn't say, tell him to go to another room, he will always follow us, which will get annoying with shit like the bathroom, private one on one meetings, or shit like asking it to bring us something, even in battle. So basically he always does whats the best for our security, despite our wishes.

Could be we want to sneak in somewhere, but if we want any chance at success, we would first have to figure out a way to loose Talos so he doesnt trace us.

Mind you, this is just another idea.

Thetis listens as you recount in full details the time when you had to be rescued by her from wild Ratches near the HQ sewers. If it were you from yesterday, you would probably have said something along the lines of "Talos punched the scary bugs and made them flat" but today you find your new tongue saying such things as "Talos started bisecting with his laser eye but many more swarmed him. But there was a bright flash and blast, and a splatter and wings and bug gore, from the explosive rounds of your shotgun. It made the rest scatter". She made you swear never to do such a crazy stunt again and most of all to never tell anyone else of it. You even tell her she made you three hot chocolates with whipped cream and two grilled cheeses with the crust cut once you returned home.

As you finish, it dawns on her it really is you.

"Mikey. . .it really is you isn't it?"

"Yeah, it is. I swear it."

"What happened to you?. Yesterday when asked about your plans for the future, you said you wanted more crayons and pencils. Now you care about the company?"

"I feel changed. I can't explain it. But I know. By the gods, now I know. This company. My fathers company, the armies he entrusted me before his. . .passing. What's happening! I think about all those orders I made in fucking glue and sparkles and I dread to think of the results."

"Don't swear" Thetis said sternly. You gulp all of a sudden, "Y-yes Thetis. Sorry."

You look down a bit, wiping a tear from your eye. Seems being smarter hasn't altered the fact that you still feel like a child before Thetis. Well, truth be told, looking at your body and hands, you are still a child.

Thetis sighs, "Well, now I know it is you, so I won't stop doing my duty, which is teaching you to be a proper Admiral."

"General Knoxx swears all the time. . ." you say.

"And you can be better than him. Also, since you requested a sit rep, you should probably know General Knoxx might be mutinyng against you."

You sit down, your frown growing, and steel yourself as she tells you disaster after disaster. You the instinct to just push all these thoughts away and go play a nice game and not care, but you can now see how short sighted that would be.

"To put it bluntly, with the exception of 1st Starbourne Brigade "Promethea", we are losing command and control of the Crimson Lance. Most of the brigades maintain the general interests of the company and give lip service to us, given that we are supplying at least some of them with arms, supplies and recruits in exchange for protection of our assets. But whether or not they are still "our" assets is another question, as the Brigade commanders have likened to "commandeering" the various planets under their jurisdiction.

All except the 3rd, Knoxx's brigade, currently on Pandora and which has outright cut off communications from us entirely.

As for the rest:
2nd Brigade - Presumed Lost in Space, last sent on an expedition to a different Galaxy to try and set up a branch of Atlas
4th Brigade - Currently occupying Elysia 7. Non-compliant with orders and quotas for some time now.
5th Brigade - Locked in a struggle with Dahl Mercenaries on Tantalus
6th Brigade - Presumed Lost/Destroyed searching for Eridian technology on Valhalla 3
7th Brigade - Occupying the Atlas sector of Capital One
8th Brigade - Suppressing dissidence on Haephestus 5
9th Brigade - Occupying territory in the Southern Galactic edge. Status unknown"

Of the nine brigades of the Lance, only one is currently loyal to you directly, as it is garrisoned here on Promethea."

You take this all in as best you can, trying to comprehend the daunting task that lies before you.

>We'll have to start somewhere. Get ready for a Meeting of the Board of Atlas. This time you aren't just going to sit at your part of the table and draw pictures

The morning was a tad bit awkward, as you insisted on trying to get yourself dressed rather than having Thetis put on your clothes for you, buttoning up your own shirt and tying your shoelaces. It wasn't easy, at first, but you learned, and soon you were dressed in your full Admiralty uniform. Soon you, your drones and the rear Admiral were headed the meeting room. As you walked by, you passed several of your Lance Royal Guards decked in their purple armor and green helmets. You pass them, and notice they seem to just nonchalantly stand there, idly chatting.

You stop, and stand before them. "Soldiers, it is regulation to salute an superior officer when they are walking by you."

The two seem startled for a moment, looking to each other. "Did- did he just say that?"

"Wait. you heard it too?"

Thetis speaks up "You heard what the Admiral said"

"Oh! Uh, yes sir!"

Both the guards stand to attention and salute, and you similarly stand tall and salute them back. "As you were, men". As you walk on you hear their chatter. "No seriously did that just happen." "Usually he's busy playing his Vidkid. And he never talked like that."

Eventually, you arrived to the meeting room, and took your place at the head of the table, waiting. Once the time had arrived there was. . .well, nobody. Everyone was arriving late, it seems. You motioned to Thetis, who soon began to issue more notifications and alerts.

"What is the meaning of this? I am supposed to be having a golf tourney on Aetos right now."
"This is an emergency meeting isn't it. There better fucking be an emergency or there WILL be one."
"I swear if this is just the Admiral pushing buttons again. Thetis what are we paying you to do!"

"Thetis has nothing to do with it." you tell them "I summoned this meeting, and I am going to have a full situational report of this company, Gentlemen."

Everyone in the room turns to you, and stares.

"Well?" you say

"This is a trick." one of them says "Has to be. Where's the real Admiral."

"I am the real Admiral, allow me to demonstrate.

'Security System! Deploy turrets in standby mode'"

From the ceiling, doors pop open as huge weapons deploy with frightening speed and noise, while a shield appears around your chair. There's shouts and yells from the other board members, some who stumble backwards or others who duck under the desk, though you see that at least one or two of them hold their nerve and sit quietly to observe.

"Turrets, stand down" you say, and they retreat back into ceiling. "You all base is locked onto my DNA, Voice Recognition, and Biometrics. If I was a fake, I'd have been locked up in a barrier shield the moment I stepped in.

Now, get yourselves together, and tell me about my company" you say. "Also, I want you to introduce yourselves. I'm paying attention this time."

"Yes, Mikey"

"I owe Admiral Knoxx an apology."

"That's a bit of an understatement-"

"I intend to give it in person."

"He cut off communications from us."

"Yes, that's why I intend to give it 'in person' "

"Mikey. . . do you even remember where Admiral Knoxx is?"

"Pandora."

"And what do you know about Pandora?"

"I've read up on it. We sent our first expedition there after the discovery of Eridian architecture and a few minor traces of Eridium. Dahl came in next, wanting to mine the Eridium and anything else of value before we could deploy any major presence.

I sent Knoxx there. . .When I was old enough to learn about the Vaults, and that one could be there, I wanted him and McCloud and an army to go find it. We even sent our only Siren, Commandant Steel there. . .

Once we came in Force, Dahl fled in a hurry, taking with them what law and order there was. It's a dangerous, barren backwater from all the reports I've read."

"Very good! You've finally read your first report. I'm so proud!"

"Sir, I'm getting a report that General McCallahan is requesting to meet you in person regarding moving the fleet to Pandora."

"He is? Well, we're trying to win back one General. Best not to tick off another. Let's go see him."

---

You soon find yourself aboard the ACS Anicetus. Technically it's your flagship. Commanded by the General.

But whether you command it's commander remains to be seen.

General Beauregard McCallahan does not stand nor salute you, at first, until Thetis seems to make a death glare at him and he reluctantly gives the briefest of salutes.

"Admiral. I thank you for showing up in person to my. . .request. I wanted to learn the reason that you are ordering yet *another* fleet to Pandora. Let alone, the home fleet?

This ship hasn't even tested its Impulse Drive in years, nor has the 1st Starbourne Brigade stepped off world in some time. So before me and my men end up stranded like Knoxx on some dustball in the middle of nowhere, I'd like to know this isn't just another fancy of yours."

>Tell him this is purely a show of force and escort role, with the intent of presenting yourself to Knoxx. The fleet will return later
>Remind the General of his rank, and your own, and who gives the orders around here. If need be, intimidate him with the override codes to ship security

“Let me get this straight. You want to convince General Knoxx to rejoin Atlas. And you want to use the entire 1st Brigade as a show of force?

Admiral, with all due respect, but how sure are you of your ‘mental growthspurt’? Because if you think Knoxx is ever gonna be intimidated, you don’t know the man. He was a Lance Commando long before Atlas even bought the Crimson Lance. I heard he once went hand to hand with an Eridian Arch Guardian, carries it’s weapon as trophy.

That being said, I hate the mans guts and he hates mine. His men have languished on Pandora, many have deserted him while mine are well supplied and cohesive. You better believe I’m not gonna pass up the chance to get one up over the old man. It’ll take some time to assemble the fleet and to arrive, I suggest you prepare exactly what it is you intend to tell Knoxx once you meet him. If he is even in a talking mood once we show up.”

Indeed. Aspirations do start young, and you certainly have many resources at your disposal
>>
>>4939430
I still wanna do childish things like putting up a huge prize for competition available to all for deadliest/coolest killbot open to any participant so long as they have function blueprints we will even build it to test it out. If the Deathtrap doesn't show up to participate I'll be sad. I like how borderlands are silly like that even if I don't like how the later games went along. Like turning the vault hunters into heroes whereas prevously they were a bunch of happy go lucky greedy murder hobos who killed anything in their way of their hunt for treasure.
>>
>>4939439
Glad to know I'm not the only one who favors the tone of BL1 over the later versions. So much was in that game that I quite miss in the later, like elemental/dismemberment death animations

Expect elements from all three games to show up, though you don't necessarily have to be very well versed in all of them to play.

And you can totally make that an action prompt while the fleet assembles.
>>
>>4939464
I hated how they butchered the characterization in the second game and following release. Being a bunch of loot obsessed murder hobos was fun and vault dwellers were no heroes. Not to mention the humor and gore. It was never about being the good guys or great storyline. Just greed, action, and most important of all fun.

Ooh do that too then. It's best if everyone else still thinks we are still a childish kid outside our internal circle. We may gain some very useful engineers and robotic designs if we get lucky.

You're too short to pilot just about anything. You're even shorter than those pictures of Child Soldiers used as anti-Dahl propaganda (or pro-Dahl depending on the source). If it isn't the weight or length of the weapons, it's the recoil.

Sorry for the lack of more frequent updates today, I had planned to do them more rapidly one day off but needed to care for things at home. It should be a bit better next week as I will be off monday-wednesday but I am working this weekend. For those of you following, I appreciate it, and as I said I will run this quest so long as I have even but one vote

Bot fights are ubiquitous to any urban planet throughout the six galaxies, especially on such an industrialized world as Promethea. The rules vary from place to place, but in certain principles are somewhat universal.

Like society, bot fights are stratified by class and wealth. The poor and working class have their backalley and junkyards, the wealthy and those engineers funded by corporations have their dedicated bot arenas and televised games.

Weapons and attacks tend to be custom made, as the major companies in the Galaxy have anti-pirate and brickware installed, thus you will see no bots equipped with *unmodified corporate weapons. Amongst the lower circles, simply slapping a hand or some trigger mechanism to a gun is generally considered poor sportsmanship if not outright banned. Amongst the upper classes, equipping bots with the latest weapons is much more common and accepted. In both cases depending on the scrutiny of both host and planetary police, it's not uncommon for certain built in weapons to have parts or fuel cells eerily resembling those of broken apart weapons.

The most popular and numerous fights are those of medium size (roughly human to small car), with microbots and heavy sized bots being more niche and in many cases prohibitively expensive for the working class, though on industrial planets like Promethea are more common.

Promethea's currently ranks #3 as a hot-spot for professional and amateur bot-fights, behind those of Arts of War Festival on Futsunushi IV and Aethon III's Hyperion Automation Expo, but ahead of the Haephestus' Demolition Derby.

With little time to organize a professional ranked match, Thetis suggests making it specifically an affair for the working classes and amateurs, as the wealthy certainly aren't in it to peddle designs so much as to show off how expensive their toys are.

A veritable horde of garage tinkerers, junk yard and ship mechanics, university teachers and their students, and even some members of your own Crimson Lance descend upon your declaration of an amateur Killbot festival.
It’s days of much wonderful mechanical carnage, the kind you yourself enjoy quite a bit. Until at last, at the end of it all standing over a battle strewn with the slain robotic corpses of foes, five remain standing.

-A design clearly intended to appeal to the corporation, the “Eye of Medusa” is an improved version of a flying type drone armed with an interesting design of a “Corrosive-Cryo” laser which freezes opponents in a crystal lattice of strong acid
-Another design by a separate team of your enginers, “Cyclops” is a strong, hard hitting humanoid robot with a powerful laser beam jammed in its head
-A somewhat polarizing design with mixed popularity, this one is quite literally described as a miniature tank. Many call it unoriginal or boring, to which its supporters simply reply “fuck you, it’s a TANK”
-A very big, and very heavily armored robot from a group of construction workers with a powerful Rivet Gun, that somewhat pushes the boundary of the weight class
-A unique design, resembling a large insect, capable of digging through metal and earth and attacking enemies from beneath the ground

You could declare five of these as winners and pick one design to sponsor. Or perhaps, have them battle it out to the finish?

“There can be only one!” you say with enthusiasm, your heart pounding with excitement to see who the winner is. Of course, you gave generous assurances to all five of them they would be rewarded with positions and royalties, something your financial adviser frowned at but could not disobey.

The crowd seethes with anticipation, until the bell rings out as the match begins.

The grasshopper burrows into the ground, going out of sight, while the first shots are fired by T4NK bot (The ower having yet another last minute name change), unleashing a hailstorm of automatic fire, rocks, and cannons which burst onto the field. Hercules raises it’s heavy shield, which seems to be a large dozer blade, aiming it’s heavy riveting gun at T4NK, but at that distance the hot metal rivets simply bounce off its armor or embed shallowly into it.

Cyclops big red eye glows hot, but just as it is about to unleash its face freezes over in a block of ice as the Medusa drone overs attempting to disable it’s primary weapon, out from the ground bursts the Grasshopper that latches onto it, going for blood. They whirl and whiz through the air, eventually crashing upon T4NK in a tremendous explosion that unleashes torrent hypercoolant, freezing the tanks literally in its tracks.

This is soon followed by a hot flash of laser energy, as the Cyclops focuses it’s deadly beam upon the immobilized T4NK bot, boring a hot red hole through its armor while the Hercules bot moves in for the kill, placing its heavy Rivet Gun up against its hull and firing point blank. The rounds find something explosive on the inside, and soon the T4NK bot becomes nothing but a steaming, flaming wreck and shrapnel and debris that pitters and patters over the battlefield.

Now all that is left are the two robots, staring each other down like titans of old. Cyclops eye beam glows hot and roils the air with heat, evidently unable to fire again so quickly, while the Hercules bot rushes forward with every ounce of speed it can muster, its steps thundering in ground and air. The Cyclops side steps, narrowly missing being tackled, and with a huge clawed fists smashes into the Hercules sending sparks and metal flying. But the bots construction is so sturdy, only a small gash is seen from the blow. Hercules swings around, and the Cyclops raises and braces itself against a crashing hit by Hercules’ heavy shield, sending the Cyclops skidding back. Just it recovers, the Hercules is right on top of it and grabs both its wrists and begins to pull. The cyclops joints and servos creak, its strength inferior to the hydraulic power of the Hercules, as sparks begin to fly from its shoulders. Before its limbs can be ripped off their sockets, the Cyclops eyes glow red and it blasts a beam at near point blank directly into Hercules head, sending a shower of hot metal and sparks. The back of Hercules head glows red hot until the laser beam erupts from it, as the Cyclops proceeds to carve every ounce of its laser down the center of the robot, melting it into two halves.

The battle is over. The crowd roars in triumph, as the Cyclops stands triumphant!

The five teams are compensated and offered positions, as per your order, in the mean time the necessary supplies and men have assembled and the fleet is ready to depart. You look up at your mighty vessel, the Anicetus, the largest of Atlas ships and the most heavily armed. A match for Knoxx's battleship "Menelaus". And if that weren't enough, you also are bringing along three Heavy Cruisers, the "Palaemon", "Lampsace" and "Diomedes". The entire 1st Starbourne Brigade is loaded and ready for war, leaving behind Promethea to be defended by local planetary defense forces, anti-orbital defenses, and the space station Aetos.

The trip to Pandora should be relatively short, a matter of days. Typically smaller vessels are capable of Intergalactic Travel in a matter of moments, but for such large masses the Implosion drive does take more time.

You spend the whole afternoon in a rush, half mentally prepping yourself for what you plan to say to General Knoxx, the other half. . .well, nearly jumping out of your boots because holy turds you are in SPACE. Going to another planet even! Oh this is so exciting you wanna yell.

In the meantime, while I have a break, I might as well give one more update.

You pay attention diligently to the lessons of General McCallahan.

"Every commander develops their own tactics, but I have been a firm believer in the phrase 'Amateurs study tactics, Professionals study logistics'. The side which has the bigger guns, the better shields, the more numerous and bigger ships tends to win. To that end, I like to ensure our battles are won before we even arrive. With overwhelming force.

If you can't ensure victory, you might as well not go to war."

"Which is why you've not left Promethea in the past seven years, General?" says Thetis

"Besides the point.

But, I suppose it's important to study the basics."

You spend the next days in FTL studying the basics of space combat. You sit down and diligently pay attention, much to Thetis delight. General McCallahan is a staunch traditionalist, and as such believes in the "Battle Phase" doctrine of war.

Phase 1 - Scouting and Reconaissance. Both sides gain an estimation of the enemies strength, disposition, and other relevant information. This can be achieved through not merely the use of probes, fighters and interceptors but also hackers, intrigue, and spies where possible.

Phase 2 - Long Distance engagement. In this phase the goal is to hinder a fleet from a far a distance as possible, while conversely avoiding or mitigating damage from the enemies long distance weapons. These engagement distances require the use of FTL or Speed of Light weapons or platforms, such as laser batteries, bombers and fighters equipped with implosion drives. McCallahan comments that the latter tactic can be rewarding, but also highly risky, as the voidcraft are unsupported and can face both enemies ships and their aircraft

Phase 3 - Close Quarters engagement. This is the more famous of the phase, the one the newsreels love. It's also the phase where either you're the commander whose sweating bullets or confidently awaiting your triumph.

The ships arrive in visual range. Truth be told, there isn't much more to this part than a great slugging match. Hit the enemies ships, and hit them harder than you get hit. Where possible, boarding teams can decisively swing the battle in your favor by capturing enemy ships to your side. This is where you'll be glad to have not only superior technology, but have used the previous phases to cripple or reduce the strength of your opponent.

---

Of course, there are many proponents who use other doctrines or ideas about space combat, but McCallahan believes in the tried and true.

"We are approaching the Pandora system now. Visuals incoming"

Then you see it. Pandora. A dry, dusty world, often compared to Gehenna. Only even shittier. But with one redeeming features that every year causes thousands of people to flock from around the galaxy here. The Vault. Few know if it is truly on Pandora, or perhaps on its moon Elpis. Ultimately, both dry and desolate rocks tend to become fitting graves or dusty prisons for those who venture to them.

"Strange, we aren't detecting General Knoxx's fleet in orbit. Scans show a lot of debris both around the planet itself and the moon Elpis, a lot of wrecked ships from past wars. Nothing our shields and navigators can't handle, but they are blocking our long range scans in those regions.

We decide to send out some fighters and frigate to go investigate, General McCallahan agrees saying it is a sensible thing to do. Our vanguard begins to probe the outer reaches of Pandora's orbit, particularly the asteroid field.

The place is strewn with the wrecks of past ventures to Pandora, particularly from Dahl, who left behind so many unfinished orbital platforms. Curiously, there is sign of recent battles, but still no trace of the 3rd Starbourne Brigade's fleet.

The Frigate does however, detect a large energy signature and the outline of a ship, hiding in a gas field among the floating rocks. It sends out a hail. No response. The captain decides to get closer, and sends out some probes. Visual inspection shows the wreck of a Dahl transport, but its engines are dead and gutted, so how can there be an energy signal? That's when the probe gets closer, and observes its cargo hull.

That's when all goes static, and you loose the feed.

"ACS Hecaterus. Come in," Thetis says into the radio feed. "What happened?"

"There's no signal rear admiral. We've lost contact!"

It seems our forward force is no longer transmitting a signal. Your ships are still far beyond the Pandora system, and now the choice is up to you.

“Order another frigate and a wave of skirmishers in battle formation” you say, quite proudly, although you are a bit nervous.

The 2nd vanguard fleet arrives into the Pandora system, and linking into their vision you are greeted by sight of explosions and thrust trails in space. The first vanguard has been ambushed! The frigate captain reports their frigates shields are down and their systems seem to be offline, while many of their fighters are in similar condition.

The ship scans report intense EMP and Electrical Field generation, coming from the hull a derelict craft, which is leaking a cloud of gaseous battery fuel from which lightning bolts arc into the void. Scans indicate the energy signatures match a large scale industrial generator set to overcharge.

Our ships are being preyed upon by what the ship crew say are dahl vessels, mostly fighters and corvettes, yet their corporate markings have been scratched off and repainted with skulls and swords; pirates! It seems they’ve outfitted their ships with various tesla coils and electrical looking things (at least, that’s how you’d describe them) so the electrical blasts don’t seem to be affecting them.

Our captain reports the enemy have begun boarding and are trying to take over the frigate! Meanwhile in space, they are also attempting to cut into and haul our fighters away. Our 2nd Vanguard is prepared to divert all auxiliary power to the shields to breach the
