Friday 6th October (Day 172)

As evening practice ends, you seek out the history club. It seems they had the same idea as you, as you run into Erwin as you round one of the tanks. You’re able to catch her before she falls, and after a mumbled thank you and picking up her hat, she looks back to you.

“The expedition?” She asks.

“What else?” You reply. She nods, and grunts in approval.

“The rest of the club is ready as well.”

“Let’s not keep them waiting then,” you say. Erwin turns and leads you back to the rest of the club. The three of them are putting on packs, and you can see Caesar pulling out a map.

“Mackensen,” Oryou greets you. She hands you a pack, you look inside and see it’s just camping supplies and food, just in case. You put the pack on and after a minute to let everyone get ready, the five of you set off.

You’ve already charted the path from the surface down to where you found the coins, and you’re able to start from the bar, so most of the difficultly is in not tripping over the miscellaneous rubbish that has managed to accumulate below Bar Donzoko and Ooarai’s Johannesburg. You stop once or twice when the club sees something interesting, but you soon make it down to where you found the papers and the gold.

“Alright, so how do we do this?” Caesar hums.

“We should split up, cover as much ground as possible,” Erwin says. “I don’t want to miss anything and leave ourselves stuck.”

“Well, if we move in one large group, we’ll be able to search thoroughly,” Saemonza replies. “We’ll probably be here all night though.”

>Support staying together and pulling an all-nighter.

“One large group sounds like a good idea,” you chip in. “It’s a bit safer too given we’re all together.”

“I suppose,” Erwin sighs. Caesar and Oryou are happy to go along with it and soon your troop is slowly moving and cataloguing everything they find.

As expected, it’s slow going. The ship’s subdivided below decks for better flood control and you’re careful to close each door after you. The relatively small subdivisions mean your group can quickly and methodically make their way through each subdivision. Unfortunately, on a ship Ooarai’s size, there are a lot of them.

As you work through the night, you find lots of interesting old things, and the bi-hourly breaks the five of you take become an impromptu show and tell. There’s everything from old papers revealing obscure trivia about the ship itself, to bits of tank that the five of you speculate on. Perhaps the most interesting thing find is an anti-tank lunge mine which after a moment of panic, you’re able to check the safety then admire properly.

Unfortunately, for quite a while, there’s nothing to be found regarding the gold. The five of you continue your work, slowly making your way deeper into the ship. It’s almost sunrise when you have a breakthrough. It begins with Erwin tripping over something. All of you rush over to help her.

“I’m alright,” Erwin groans to your questions. “What did I trip on?”

You search the floor for a couple moments and Caesar spots a small wooden box, almost flush to the floor. She uses a multitool to pry it open and examines it. You watch as she goes from relaxed to intrigued to alert in the space of seconds as she reads it.

“Sae, do you have pictures of those other documents we found?” She asks. Saemonza pulls out her phone, scrolls through it for a second before handing it to Caesar.

“Same date!” Caesar gasps. “We have a port! Kochi!”

You rush over to have a look, and sure enough, it’s more routing documents. You notice something interesting. “They were offloading tons of stuff.”

“Over who knows how many trips…” Erwin murmurs, leaving the rest unsaid.

>“We’ve got a lead, let’s call it a night.” It’d be a good idea to get some sleep before Erika jumps you to attend Black Forest’s Oktoberfest.

“I don’t know if we’ll find anything better than this,” Caesar replies. “I suppose it’s worth a quick look though.”

“That’s the spirit!” You cheer. The five of you slowly get back to it. You go on for another couple of hours, sorting and cataloguing everything you find and marking anything of value or interest.

“I wonder whether we can get anything out of the Student Council for bringing all this stuff down here to their attention,” Erwin muses aloud.

“If there’s anything of value to them,” Saemonza sighs.

“I believe that the President is more interested in the gold,” Oryou says.

A couple of the others look to you and you just shrug. “She’s probably right, you know.”

It’s almost seven in the morning when you find something new. Yourself and Erwin find an ounce of gold along with more documents that seem to point to the quantity of it. Unfortunately, they’re damaged enough you can’t make everything out, but you do make out ’00 tons’ meaning it’ll be at least 100.

The five of you decide to call it a little while afterwards with your finds in tow. You head straight back to your apartment where you drop your stuff in the hallway and pass out.

“Oi! Wake up!” You’re violently shaken out of your sleep. You look up, and see your sister, hovering over you. “It’s eleven! We gotta go to Black Forest!”

If it’s eleven, that means you’ve had about three hours of sleep.

>“Make me coffee and we’ll see.”

“Geez, how lazy are you?” Erika continues to poke you in the side for a solid minute before she realises you’re serious.

She disappears with a sigh and you hear the kettle in your kitchen whizzing. You get five more minutes of sleep before she returns.

Thunk

“Drink,” she orders.

“Do I have a choice?” You mumble. You don’t need to see her to know she’s getting annoyed. With another yawn, you slowly sit up and start sipping. It’s almost black, with little milk or sugar but the caffeine does its job and a few minutes later you’re up and out of bed.

“You have five minutes!” Erika declares before storming back into your living room.

Half an hour later, you exit your bedroom showered and changed. Thankfully, Erika’s not willing to bother you in the shower, buying you a nice and long one.

You’re dragged out of the door before you can offer her breakfast. From there it’s a forced march to the helipad where there’s a Huey waiting for you. You note with no small amount of pride that the club you helped to found now has more helicopters than the few it began with. They’re either very profitable or Anzu has deigned them fit to receive money.

As you approach, you see the Black Forest schoolship docked. Its helipads are apparently very busy and you’re left waiting for a good ten minutes before a pad opens up for you to use.

“There’s so many people!” Erika gawks as the two of you make your way into the city. “I knew Black Forest was bigger than us, but this many?”

“Half of them are probably here for the festival,” you remind her.

>“Let’s go find Maho, she can probably tell us what’s good around here.”

>“Let’s go find Maho, she can probably tell us what’s good around here.”

“Right!” Erika seems to approve of that idea and the two of you begin making your way towards the centre of the festival. You also send a text to Maho who suggests you head for ‘the biggest tent’. You spot said tent in the middle of what looks like a Sensha-Do practice field a few moments later and the two of you trek through the mud to reach it.

“Ah, just like home,” Erika sighs fondly. She grows visibly more ecstatic when you get inside.

There are lots of Black Forest girls, both in dirndls and serving and those just enjoying the festival. You recognise more of those in dirndls and it takes you a moment to place that as being because all the girls serving are members of the Black Forest Sensha-Do club.

“I see Maho!” Erika announces, dragging you through the crowd. You let her do so, occasionally acquiescing to being used as a human battering ram.

You soon reach the bar, where Maho is serving, darting between customers.

“Ah, the Hermanns,” she says with a small smile. She takes a moment to deal with an order, before walking over to you. “I’m glad the two of you could make it.”

“We wouldn’t miss it for the world!” Erika replies.

“And I’m very happy to hear that,” Maho says. She turns around to grab a couple of beer glasses then heads over to a tap to fill them before passing them to you. “These ones are on the house.”

“Thank you!” Erika grabs for one of the glasses. “Are they…?”

“Afraid not,” Maho says, smiling sadly. “We can get away with a lot on a school carrier but serving alcohol to minors isn’t one of them.”

“Aw crud,” Erika grumbles as she sips it. “Tastes good though.”

“It’s our own brew,” Maho says proudly.

“Must’ve been expensive,” you state as you sip.

“And when has cost stopped Black Forest?” She asks.

>“So, anywhere to eat around here? Do you have any peanuts behind that bar?”
>“What else do you guys have around here? Aside from the great beer.”
>“So you’re telling me you went to all that trouble to brew on a ship, and you don’t have anything harder?”

>“So you’re telling me you went to all that trouble to brew on a ship, and you don’t have anything harder?”

“Yes, I am, and if you try to take this any further, you will be talking to my mother,” she gives you an exaggerated and obvious wink. You might be tired, but you don’t miss the hint.

“I see, I see, thanks for uh, warning me,” you reply with a nod.

“Warning you? You must be out of it! She just-“ Your hand shoots out to cover Erika’s mouth. “Mmph! Bmblb!”

“As I said, thanks for the warning,” you say again, emphasising it for your sister. You withdraw your hand when she begins to lick it in protest which you make sure to rub into her hair.

“Cute,” Maho states as she watches the two of you squabble. “You’re welcome to stay here as long as you want, but I’ll be serving for a while longer.”

“I think we might just go say hello to your mother,” you say. “Just because she’s around.”

“Of course, that makes perfect sense,” Maho nods.

“Yo- I mean, I also need to eat since you didn’t cook this morning!” Erika declares before turning to Maho. “You guys have food around here, right?”

“Of course,” Maho replies, now filling up beer glasses for other customers. “Just head into town and they’ll be everywhere.”

“Thank you! Fritz! Get moving!”

You sigh and share a look with Maho before finishing your glass and putting it down. It’s free, but you throw a few notes down anyway before you leave.

The two of you head into town, and sure enough, you begin to see food stalls. You begin to beeline to the closest one, but you’re interrupted by a familiar voice.

“Fritz! Erika! Over here!” You look over and see Koume waving at the two of you from behind a stall. You walk over, where she ducks out from behind the stall to hug the both of you. You look over her shoulder at what’s in the stall.

>Ask for a bit of everything.

“Koume?” You ask the girl, slowly breaking the hug. “My first and best friend, how much for some of everything that you have on that stall.”

“Three and a half thousand yen,” she replies as she moves back behind the stall.

“Deal,” you reply instantly. You and Erika sit on the stools nearby. You fish out the money and slap it on the counter. Koume slips it into a money box and sets about preparing everything for you.

“So Koume,” Erika asks, gently swinging her legs, “why is it that it’s only the Sensha-Do girls on the stalls and serving and stuff.”

“Well, we arranged it is the first reason,” she replies as she begins setting things in front of you. Erika immediately swipes your pretzel. “The second is it’s a way of giving back to the rest of the school. For the rest of the year everything is about the Sensha-Do club, so it’s a chance to thank them for their efforts.”

“That’s pretty cool,” Erika replies. You take back the half of the Pretzel that’s left after Erika’s assault and swap it for some currywurst and chips. You sit and chat with Koume a little longer as you finish everything off.

Once you’re done, you say your goodbyes to her, promise to find her again sometime during the weekend, and head off.

You and Erika head into town to walk off the food.

“I told our crews and your girlfriend ‘bout this,” she says. “They should be around here somewhere too.”

“Did you now? You didn’t think to say earlier? They could’ve come with us.”

“I forgot,” she replies nonchalantly. “Oops.”

>“Did you tell Rosehip?”

Erika is suddenly not so nonchalant.

“Maybe…” she offers.

“There’s nothing to be shy about,” you reply. “I already know everything and it’s not like you’ll get in trouble for it.”

“Fine, fine, I did,” she grumbles. “She’ll be here tomorrow.”

“So, you’re using me today to scope out all the good places to go?”

“Well yes, but actually no,” she replies. “Sure I want to have fun tomorrow, but I wanted to have a little with you as well, so it’s just like back home.”

“So, you haven’t had enough of me from using my place as a hotel?”

“Nope.” She replies unrepentantly.

“Fine by me,” you go to ruffle her hair, but she slaps your hand down before you can.

>Continue your journey to Instructor Nishizumi.

Neither Koume nor Maho told you exactly where to find the instructor, but you continue towards the centre of the festival. It’s not long before you get your first clue.

“Hey! Fritz! Over here kid!”

You look over and see Tsuneo waving at you from a table, beer in hand.

“Who’s that?” Erika asks.

“I don’t know,” you reply as you shake his hand. “Who is Tsuneo Nishizumi?”

“Miho has an older brother?” She jokes.

That causes him to burst out laughing. “You flatter me kid. Judging from the similarities, this your sister?”

“Sure is,” you nod before turning to Erika. “So if you’re around here...”

“Then Instructor Nishizumi should be around here somewhere,” Erika deduces, getting a nod from Tsuneo.

“Sure is, just raise your hand for a beer,” Tsuneo says as he finishes his.

Erika hesitantly does so and a few moments later, Instructor Nishizumi approaches in a dirndl.

“Hermanns,” she says with a nod.

“Instructor,” you nod back. “Taking part in the festivities today?”

“It is my job to lead by example,” Shiho replies seriously.

“It also means a great view,” Tsuneo whistles. That earns him a glare from Shiho.

“They’re just as bad as mum and dad,” Erika mumbles under her breath.

>Ask about what there is to do aside from eat and drink.

You decide you don’t want to witness a homicide in public.

“So, instructor, what else is there to do here apart from eat and drink?”

Shiho gives Tsuneo a parting glare before turning to you. “Well, that’s the main point of it, and the girls have put a lot of effort into all the different stalls they’ve put up, so I’d recommend you try them all out.”

“Mama bear mode,” Tsuneo stage-whispers, leaning back in his chair.

“Aside from that,” Shiho continues, ignoring her husband, “there’s a small funfair set up in the stern training area which you may find interesting. There’s a tank parade scheduled to end the day tomorrow, but it’s small, so it may not be of interest to you.”

>Ask about beer.

“I see. Now,” you lean forward as you move onto more serious topics. “I heard from Maho that you definitely don’t brew any actual beer and that I’d be in trouble with you if I pestered her about it.”

“Everything you heard is true,” she nods, pulling a notepad out of her sloped armour and writing something down. “And you definitely shouldn’t talk to me again sometime tomorrow if you want any.”

“Of course not,” you reply. “I’d never think of it.”

“Good. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have a job to do.”

“Love you darling!” Tsuneo says. That earns him a kick to the chair which tips, leaving him sprawled on the floor.

You share a look with Erika.

“Just like mum and dad,” she repeats. The two of you walk over to Tsuneo and help him up.

“Thank you, kiddos,” he groans as you help him to his feet. “Man, I love that woman. Wish she’d reciprocate in a slightly less violent manner though.”

“Have you ever considered that might be your fault?” Erika suggests.

“Hmm,” Tsuneo seems to consider it. “No, it must be her. She’s been the same since I met her.”

“When did you met her?” You ask.

“University,” he replies with a smile. “I was underneath her tank, working on it. She stormed in demanding it be ready soon. I rolled out to see what the commotion was and I ended up right beneath her.”

You think you know where this is going. “Was she by any chance wearing a skirt?”

“Best day of my life,” he grins. “Well worth the pain.”

>Go find Yuzu and your crew.

Tsuneo shoos the two of you off a few minutes later, telling you not to let an old man like him stop you from enjoying the festival.

You text Axel, asking where he is. He responds a moment later with a picture of a Ferris wheel. You haven’t seen one of those yet, but it’s likely with the rest of the rest of the funfair at the stern of the ship so the two of you make your way over.

It’s not hard to spot your friends. You see Axel sticking out of the crowd first, followed by the rest of your crew and Yuzu. You can also see Erika’s crew milling around. What’s more surprising is that Anglerfish team is also present. Saori and Hana had been expected but it appears the rest of the team also tagged along.

“Fritz!” Yuzu waves to get your attention as you approach. You head over to receive a hug. “How’s your morning been.”

“Interesting,” you reply. “There’s a lot of us here today.”

“The History Club and the Rabbits are also around somewhere, and I wouldn’t be surprised if there were more,” Yuzu says. “You’re an expert in this Oktoberfest stuff, so what’s the plan?”

“Oh? Is that part of your usual Oktoberfest experience?” Yuzu asks, waggling her eyebrows.

“Not usually,” you reply.

“Not for lack of trying!” Erika taunts from a safe distance. Yuzu giggles as you give your sister a flat glare.

“You’re only allowed to talk when you have a girlfriend,” you reply before turning back to a thoroughly amused Yuzu. “Shall we?”

“Let’s,” she replies. The two of you head towards it and you can see Ruby and Hana trailing.

“That’s a long line,” Yuzu observes.

“Probably because you can’t put too many good rides on a schoolship,” you reply. “I wouldn’t be surprised if this is the only one.”

Yuzu hums, but doesn’t say anything, instead content to hug your arm. You inch closer. Thankfully, though the queue is long, there are plenty of carriages, so it’s moving quickly.

Soon, the four of you approach the front of the line. You’re able to get separate carriages, so it’s just you and Yuzu in yours.

The Ferris wheel slowly clicks upwards, and the two of you take in the view. On one side, you can see Kumamoto which is boosted by being high up on the ship and the Ferris wheel. On the other is the open sea.

“It looks beautiful doesn’t it?” Yuzu murmurs, looking out to the sea, which is sparking in the sun.

“Not as beautiful as you are,” you reply with a grin. She goes red and turns away, and you can’t help but snicker.

“I should’ve expected that,” she mumbles. “I walked right into it…”

You reach the top a few moments later.

“So… making out?”

Yuzu sighs and smiles, shaking her head. “Typical.”

She doesn’t protest though and leans towards you. You accept the offer. It’s not the first time, but on a great day at the top of the world, it feels pretty good.

Your turn soon passes, and you begin to descend. Hana and Ruby were right behind you, so they should be at the top right now.

You consider interrupting the two of them for a moment. It’d be amusing, but you reckon both of them and Yuzu wouldn’t be as amused as you are.

You decide to leave it, and instead turn to Yuzu. “Shall we hit the rest of the funfair after this?”

“Sure! I want to see how they managed to fit one on a schoolship!” Yuzu replies.

“It probably helps that their schoolship is far bigger than ours,” you say.

The two of you slowly descend the Ferris wheel, and soon reach the bottom. The rest of your companions have dispersed into the fair, but you wait for Hana and Ruby before heading off.

“So Fritz, how was your morning with your sister?” Hana asks as the four of you make your way in. “I’m always so jealous when I see the two of you together, you look like the best of siblings.”

“That’s because you don’t see her in private,” you laugh. “It was good, we did a lot together. I think she was missing home, so this festival came at a great time.”

“I’m glad to hear that,” Hana replies. “There’s another end of term break at the end of the month. That might be a good opportunity for her to refresh herself.”

“It definitely might be,” you nod. The four of you soon arrive to a row filled with games and you look around.

>There’s a horseshoe throw, how hard could that be?

Ruby and Hana immediately make a beeline for the duck shoot. They’re both being friendly about it, but you can see from their eyes that they’re both looking to one-up the other. You consider having a go as well but decide against putting yourself in the middle of their competition.

You observe the other two options. There’s a basketball shoot-out, which you’ve only played in school a handful of times, and a horseshoe toss, trying to get the shoe around a pole a couple of meters away.

“Yeah, I’ve done this before,” you say as you approach it. “It’s not too hard when you have some experience.”

“With games like this, there’s got to be a catch, right?” Yuzu asks doubtfully.

“Trust me,” you reassure her. “I have this.”

You approach the stall, pay the required amount of money and receive your horseshoes.

You throw the first one. It lands squarely on the pole.

“See? Nothing to it,” you say to Yuzu.

You throw the second one and it goes wide.

“I haven’t done this in a while,” you explain.

You throw the third one. It hits the pole and bounces away.

“A fluke,” you explain again.

You throw the fourth one. It doesn’t even land close to the pole, flying over the top.

“Nothing to it, huh?” Yuzu half teases and half comforts you.

You throw the last one which lands, a small consolation prize.

Yuzu also has a go, she doesn’t get any around the pole, but she manages to land three right next to it.

“Oh well,” Yuzu giggles as the two of you observe others having a go. “It’s just a game, right?”

“Yeah just a game,” you sigh.

Yuzu starts to move away from the game and towards another section of the fair, but you stay rooted in your spot, watching someone else play. Yuzu quickly notices you’re not following and turns back.

She nudges your side to get your attention. “Are you thinking about the horseshoes?”

“I’m thinking about the horseshoes,” you confirm.

“It’s not that big a deal, and there’s plenty of other games you could try,” Yuzu says. “Why not the duck hunt?”

“I’ve won a duelling league, a tournament and the Unlimited class, I can’t let a horseshoe throw stop me.”

“You don’t have to be good at everything,” Yuzu sighs.

“Nonsense,” you say shaking your head. “I’m going to beat it and I’m going to win you a prize or die trying.”

“Well okay then, I won’t stop you,” she says holding her hands up. “Just don’t let it be death by old age, okay?”

“No worries, this’ll only take one more try,” you reassure her as you walk over. You slap down the required amount of money and the stall owner dutifully hands you the horseshoes.

You make sure to test the weight with the first one before you throw it. It sails through the air, and lands on the pole.

You give yourself a short, sharp nod before throwing the second one. It hits the ground just before the pole and ends up leaning against it. Not optimal, but okay.

The third one is better than the first, hitting the second horseshoe in such a way both end up around the pole.

The fourth one is wobbly, but lands well, touching but not on the pole.

You say a short prayer as you throw the fifth. It sails true at high speed, slamming into the pole and spinning around it several times. You give yourself a final nod of satisfaction before turning to Yuzu. “I told you, nothing to it.”

>Get the smiley, green, turtle plushy.

“I…I suppose you did,” Yuzu replies. You head back to the stall where the owner presents you with a wall of stuffed toys and other things as potential prizes. You scan everything available, and quickly narrow it down to three plushies – a turtle, a cat and a swan. The swan looks cool, but is quickly disregarded in favour of the cat or the turtle. It’s a tough choice, especially since the cat looks just like Otto, but you decide on the turtle. Fitting given Yuzu’s on Turtle team.

“A turtle!” She exclaims as you hand it to her. “It’s green too!”

“Sure is,” you nod. She looks it over with a smile before handing it back to you.

“Now hold this for me while I win you something,” she says as she marches over to the stand. She pays and collects her horseshoes, before heading back towards the pole.

“Good luck!” You shout after her.

She doesn’t acknowledge you, instead, weighing the horseshoes in her hand. She then proceeds to throw them slowly, one at a time.

She takes longer than you, and the stall owner starts to get impatient due to the building queue, but she does better than you, landing all five on the pole.

“The cat please,” she says to the stall owner. He hands it to her, then shoos the two of you out of the way. Yuzu then hands you the cat and takes back her turtle.

“That was some good throwing,” you say as you examine your cat.

“Like you said, nothing to it!”

“Have you done horseshoe tossing before?” You ask.

“I’ve done similar before,” she replies. “I have a lot of younger siblings, so that’s a lot of toys that need to be won, you know?”

The two of you walk through the stern funfair, occasionally seeing other people from Ooarai milling about.

“Shall we go find Maho?” You ask as you continue meandering through the fair. “She probably won’t be working all day, and I know she’s around.”

“Sure! Sounds like a good idea to me!”

The two of you make your way out of the funfair and back towards the big tent where you saw Maho first. When you enter, it’s just as busy as when you first arrived, though fresh faces are (wo)manning the taps and serving.

You spot a familiar face at the bar and head over.

“What’ll it- Fritz,” Erika interrupts herself as she notices who she’s talking to. “Thought I’d see you here.”

“Erika,” you reply with a nod. “We’ll have whatever’s on tap.” You hold up two fingers to signal for two cups and she pulls out three glasses.

“He means two,” Yuzu corrects, pushing your hand down. They share a laugh at your expense and Erika hands you your beer. You take a sip then ask.

“So, is Maho around? She was here earlier.”

“Her shift ended not long ago,” Erika replies as she cleans another glass. “She’ll be out in a moment, probably changing.”

So you sit there with Yuzu. Erika goes back to serving and it takes a few minutes but Maho appears. She quickly spots the two of you and walks over.

“We were looking for you,” you say as she approaches. You signal Erika, but her Maho-sense has already gone off and she’s serving you before you could ask.

“Well, I’m here now,” she replies. Erika pours out another three glasses for you.

You sip at it for a little bit before Maho opens the conversation. “This reminds me of that park in Germany. We even have an Erika with us.”

“This one is slightly larger though,” you muse. Erika is nearby and you can tell she hears you from the way her eyes narrow.

>Maho’s going to university soon, find out when.

You decide to move on before Erika can come over and attack you again. “So, Maho. When are you leaving for university? It’s soon right? Hence allowing Erika to take command.”

“I leave tomorrow evening,” Maho replies. “School begins next week Monday so I wanted to head to Germany early in order to get settled.”

“Damn, that soon? And you didn’t think to tell us?”

“You didn’t ask,” Maho shrugs as she takes another sip of her beer. You share a look with Yuzu who just gives you a What can you do?

“Is that what the parade is for?” You ask.

“Not really, but yes,” Maho sighs. “Mother’s idea.”

>Ask Erika about being captain of the team, see how she feels about it.

You turn to Erika. “So that means effective tomorrow, you are captain of Black Forest’s Sensha-Do team, right?”

“It does,” she replies between filling beer glasses.

“How do you feel about it?” Yuzu asks.

Erika pauses for a moment to consider it. “I have big shoes to fill, and I’ll work my hardest to do so or die trying.”

“Just do your best to find your own way,” Maho chips in. “Otherwise there’s no point in doing it at all.”

“Yeah, my own way,” Erika laughs humourlessly. You share a look with Yuzu who’s also noticed but you decide against bringing it up here and now.

“So Maho, what time do the festivities end?”

“Around nine,” she replies. “To give us time to clean up and prepare for tomorrow.”

“So, you don’t mind if we stay till then?”

“You are welcome to stay longer if you wish,” Maho shrugs. “I can’t promise we’d be much fun though, given the preparations we have to do.”

“Is nine alright with you?” You ask Yuzu.

“It’s fine with me!”

“Looks like we’re staying a while then,” you say to Maho.

And stay you do. The three of you spend a couple of hours in the tent, chatting away and killing time till Erika’s shift finishes. She then joins you for a bit, but as the evening goes on, the three of you move out of the tent and into the town. Maho takes you to a café on a sidestreet. It’s doing brisk business, but isn’t packed enough to make it annoying. It’s also mostly locals and residents, meaning Maho doesn’t have to deal with any fans.

Koume also joins the four of you, though more by luck than chance. She’s still dressed in her Dirndl meaning she just finished which she confirms when you ask.

The topic eventually drifts to the upcoming Saunders culture festival. Black Forest have already began filming, but they’re tight lipped about what exactly they’re doing. They do say that they won once a couple of years ago but apparently St. Gloriana’s are the reigning champions at the moment. As expected though, most teams enter movies based on tanks, and no movie has won without tanks being involved.

Nine quickly rolls around and the Black Forest girls excuse themselves to go help with the cleanup. Without them around, there’s no reason for the two of you to stay, so you head home.

Sunday 8th October (Day 174)

>The history club texted about having a look around in Kochi, go with them.

That morning, you wake up to a text letting you know that the history club is getting ready to leave for Kochi to see what they can find regarding the treasure haul. You consider letting them do it themselves, and enjoy the rest of Black Forest’s Oktoberfest, but you’ve been involved with the search from the beginning, so you might as well see it through.

“Are you going somewhere?” Yuzu asks with a yawn as you start to get out of bed.

“The history club want to investigate the treasure haul further,” you reply as you flop out of bed. “I want to see it through.”

“Okay, have fun,” Yuzu replies, rolling over. She grabs Otto as she does. The cat seems perfectly fine with it, still snoring away.

You head to the warehouse, where the history club is waiting with a helicopter. Erwin is qualified to fly one, meaning you don’t need to involve anyone else, a plus in their eyes.

Thankfully, the Ooarai schoolship had steamed north in the night from Kumamoto, meaning that a trip that could’ve been guaranteed to taken all day, potentially won’t.

When you arrive, you’re unable to land directly at the port, but a nearby small airfield makes a decent substitute. Erwin puts the helicopter down, and as you climb out and see about acquiring a ride, you think about how best to go about finding anything.

>Find whoever’s in charge at the port and ask if you can get into their archives.

>Find whoever’s in charge at the port and ask if you can get into their archives.

You suggest that the five of you head into port and try to use their archives. No one in the history club has any better ideas, so they agree and you make your way to the port. It’s not far from the airfield, so you’re able to make good time to it.

You decide to just walk straight up to the administrative entrance and ask to see the harbourmaster. You get some weird looks, but not as many as you expected. Kochi is big enough to berth a schoolship, so schoolkids probably aren’t an irregular sight, but you doubt it’s common either.

“Can I help you ladies? And gentleman?” An incredibly bored receptionist sighs as you walk in.

“We’d like to see the harbourmaster, please,” you say.

He doesn’t acknowledge you, and instead taps away at a computer. You’re stood there for almost a minute before he says anything. “Take a seat, it’ll probably be a while.”

You share a look with Caesar who just shrugs.

The five of you take seats around the reception area and wait.

The wait time ends up being short. Half an hour after you entered, the receptionist points you to the harbourmaster’s office. The door is open, and you walk in. The office has a window spanning the entire back wall, looking out over the harbour. Apart from that it’s pretty normal, and rather spartan compared to other offices you’ve seen.

“It’s not everyday I get kids coming to see me,” the harbourmaster observes as you enter. “What did you want from me again?”

“We wanted to access the harbour archives,” you say.

“The harbour archives?” He repeats, eyes narrowing. “The only people who ever want access to those are auditors and investigative journalists, and I hate both.”

“We’re neither of those,” Ceasar argues. “We’re a history club – we want access to your older archives.”

“What for?”

>“We’re tracking every journey our schoolship took, and it docked here a long time ago.”

“So, you’re practical types, ey? I can respect that,” the harbour master nods as he strokes his beard. “How far back did you say you wanted to look?”

“Late 1940s, early 1950s,” Erwin replies.

“That far back? Oh dear,” the captain chuckles and shakes his head. “Everything pre-1990s is paper and everything post 1975 is an unorganised mess. At the very least, we don’t have anything pre-1945 for you to wade through. You want my advice? Check somewhere else, I can’t imagine what ever you’re interested in is worth diving through four hundred odd boxes that are scattered throughout a warehouse.”

“We’re pretty motivated,” Caesar says. The harbourmaster raises an eyebrow at that, but decides not to press, shrugging and scratching his beard.

“Well, if it’s that important to you, I won’t stop you,” he shrugs. “I don’t expect you’ll find anything though. Not lest you have the luck of the devil.”

“Is that your permission?” Oryou ventures.

“It is,” the harbourmaster sighs. “Get Haru at the desk to guide you out, kid does nothing all day, so you might as well get him to do that.”

“Right! Thank you sir!”

He waves off your thanks as the five of you walk out.

“Youth is wasted on the young,” you hear him mutter as you do. You ignore it in favour of continuing down to reception. He’ll understand when you’re done.

Before you can talk to Haru, Caesar calls for a huddle. It’s slightly odd given you’re in the middle of the hallway but you humour her.

“This is shaping up to be a big task,” she starts. “Since the festival is today, I just wanted to put it to a vote whether to stay and look or leave it for another day.”

The club is divided. You can see they’re all eager to find out about the treasure, but they are all also teenage girls and things like Black Forest’s Oktoberfest don’t come around often. You rack your brain for a minute, ignoring the confused looks you’re being shot by passing dock workers.

“Look,” you begin as all eyes turn to you. “We’re already here, so we might as well see what we’re working with. We can come back another day, but let’s at least see what we’re going to have to deal with.”

“Right! That sounds like a good idea!” Erwin nods enthusiastically. “We have our evenings to come here over the next week! Plus, whenever we’re not needed for filming!”

“If the treasure we seek is still around, it’s unlikely an extra couple of days will see it found before we get there,” Oryou adds.

“It’s agreed then,” you say. “Let’s take a quick look then head back.”

“Right!” The four of them say. You march to the reception, where Haru sits, looking as bored as earlier.

“Can you take us to the archives?” You ask.

“It’s that way,” he replies, gesturing to an elevator.

“The harbourmaster said you have to take us there,” Saemonza adds.

“I don’t like you people,” he states as he stands. He leads you down the elevator to the basement archives. It’s big, but not as big as you expected. You can see two hundred or so boxes in two columns piled neatly. The closest box is for December 1989, so you assume those are the ‘filed’ boxes from 1975 onwards. The other two-thirds of the room is significantly less neat. Most of the boxes are intact, but some are damaged and some have their contents spilt on the floor.

“Better than I’d feared, worse than I’d hoped,” Saemonza says, summing the situation up perfectly.

With that checked, the five of you head for the helicopter. You promise Haru you’ll be back which he doesn’t seem to approve of and set off. You’re soon in the air, on the way to Black Forest.

The flight is longer than the one to Ooarai, but you didn’t spend that long looking around, so when you arrive, it’s still mid-afternoon.

“Would you like to come with us, Commander?” Erwin asks as you disembark. “No thank you,” you reply, watching as they shuttle your helicopter into a hangar to clear a landing pad.

“Well, have fun!” Caesar says with a wave as they depart. “We sure will!”

>You need to pick up some beer from Instructor Nishizumi. Go do that.

“I’ll do my best!” You shout back. You watch them leave towards the large tent for a minute before turning and heading into town. You text Instructor Nishizumi to let her know you’re around, and you’re directed to the bridge of the ship. The naval studies students seem to have been prewarned, so don’t even bat an eyelid when you enter.

You’re directed to an elevator which takes you up to the Instructor’s office. It looks much the same as last time, though there are more pictures of Miho and Maho scattered around.

“Hermann,” Instructor Nishizumi greets you from behind her desk. “I hope you’ve been enjoying the festival so far.”

“We sure have,” you reply. “Well worth the trip.”

“I’m glad you should think so, the girls put an inordinate amount of effort into preparing for this weekend. By the way, there is nothing in this mini-fridge next to me. Nothing you should take with you when you get a chance.”

You take that as an opportunity to check the fridge. Sure enough, there’s a pair of twelve-packs sitting inside. The glass bottles only have a simple label: Black Forest Beer.

>“Thank you, I certainly won't take whatever is not in there.”

Instructor Nishizumi looks satisfied with your words and gives you a short sharp nod.

“Good,” is all she says before she gets back to the work on her desk. You pull out the packs and inspect them.

“It looks good.”

“Unlike the festival,” Instructor Nishizumi begins carefully. “The girls didn’t put any effort at all into any beer. I’m very proud of them.”

That confuses you for a moment. Is she disappointed in them making it or did she slip and just admit she’s proud of them? You decide not to question it.

“Well, thanks anyway, Instructor,” you say as you leave. There are some handy plastic bags around which you use to add a thin disguise to your acquisition. You consider taking it all with you to see Maho, but the hangar is closer, and she can probably get more wheras this is all you have for the foreseeable future.

>Maho’s leaving tonight, go hang with her.

You find the Huey you used to arrive and put both bags inside it. With that done, you set off in search of Maho. She isn’t hard to find, a quick texts reveals her to be at the centre of town. You arrive after a short walk and find her with a larger group than usual. Maho is there, along with Erika and Koume. Miho is also there, as well as Alice from the university match, though you’re unsure if that’s because of Miho or Maho wanting her there. There’s four other girls that look vaguely familiar, but you can’t place them. They’re definitely from the Black Forest Sensha-Do team, but beyond that you have no idea.

>Talk to the four girls you’ve never met before, find out who they are.

You look at the various scenes playing out in front of you and think for a moment. You quickly decide to investigate the relative mystery first.

As you approach, all four of them watch you. You pull out a nearby chair, and spin it around before sitting down in it.

“So, the four of you look pretty familiar, but I can’t place you,” you begin. The four of them share an amused look at that.

“Well, we’ve been in close proximity several times now,” one wearing an eyepatch says, though we’ve never formally met.

“How many times?” You ask as you wrack your brain trying to remember where you recognise them from.

They share another look with each other.

“Maybe four times?” A different one answers. “If it helps, we’ve been with Maho every single time.”

That gives it away.

“You must be Maho’s crew then?” You ask getting a round of nods and yeses.

“We sure are!” Another says thumping her chest. “Since semester one of year one, us four have been by her side! There’s no other woman who can claim to be riding with a Nishizumi that long!”

“Really? Not even including Instructor Nishizumi?”

“Especially Instructor Nishizumi,” she says. “I don’t think she’s ridden with the same crew for more than six months.”

“A very demanding commander,” the one with the eyepatch says. “She sat in our tank once to observe practice. Worst day of my life.”

“Sounds like it’d be very squashed,” you say, imagining trying to fit an Instructor Nishizumi sized woman inside Werewolf with you. Doable, but not comfortable.

“So, are you guys going to be heading to Germany with Maho?” You ask.

Two of them nod. “We were all offered spots by the university,” the one with short, red hair says. “Only me and Tanaka over here accepted.” She elbows the black-haired girl that’d been silent so far.

I speak German, so it was a pretty easy choice,” she says in German, looking at you before repeating it in Japanese for her friends.

“This makes it a going away party for you two as well, right?”

“I…I suppose it does,” Tanaka eventually says, apparently, she hadn’t considered that. “It’s not really a party though, more of an intimate get together.”

“Mostly intimate get together,” the redhead says. “Given the Shimada girl is here.”

“You don’t like her?”

“You like her?” She asks, flipping the question around. “Wasn’t she a part of trying to shut down your school?”

“She was just head of the university team,” you reply. “Should I hate you guys for opposing us in the national high school cup? Besides Miho likes her, and that’s a good enough endorsement for me.”

“A bleeding heart that one has, for better or for worse.” Tanaka replies. “It cost us last year’s finals.”

“And do you blame her?” You ask.

“No way,” she snorts, shaking her head. “I could never blame her for saving a teammate’s life. It’s just an example, you know?”

“A pretty bad one,” the redhead says, earning her an elbow from Tanaka.

“You get the point,” Tanaka argues.

>Talk to Koume about everything.

Maho’s crew descends into an argument about metaphors and their relevance in the current situation. You listen politely for a few minutes before it starts to go off-topic. By that point, they’re deep into in-jokes, so you quietly disengage and look around for someone else to talk to.

You find that person in Koume, who’s sitting back a bit, watching Erika and Miho fussing over Maho.

“You not going to join them?” You ask as you take a seat next to her.

“I’ve never been one to worry about things I can’t control,” she replies, not taking her eyes off the scene in front of her. “I’m going to miss Commander Nishizumi though.”

“We all are,” you reply as you watch the scene in front of you. Miho and Erika are both clinging to one of Maho’s arms. She’s trying to shake them off, but her effort is half-hearted at best.

“Maho and Erika were the only people who stood up for me after last year,” she continues. “There were others who were sympathetic, but no one else stood up to the bullies like they did.” She pauses to consider that for a minute. “Or your sister.”

“Do you think it’ll begin again when she’s gone?”

“No,” Koume says immediately. “I’m pegged to be vice-commander, so it’d be career suicide and all the ring leaders are gone. I’d have loved to be led by Maho into one last tournament though.”

“Then go to the same university,” you suggest. “`I bet she’ll be running the club by this time next year.”

“Sucker’s bet,” she replies with a laugh. “Make sure to stay after this is over today, I think Maho would want you to be there when she leaves.”

>“Of course, Koume.”
>“Who wouldn’t want me there?”

“I see all your wins this year haven’t taught you any humility,” Koume huffs at your joke.

“I see someone is a sore loser,” you joke back.

“It was a draw last time we fought, mister,” she reminds you.

“And how many of the matches we’ve fought have ended that way?” You ask. That seems to remind her of Black Forest’s spotty record against you and she gives up the argument with a sigh.

That sets the tone for the rest of the night. It’s fun just sitting and chatting with people you consider friends. Your crew makes a stop to wish Maho luck as does your sister who manages to earn Big Erika’s ire by insinuating she won’t be as good a captain as Maho. An Erika battle is thankfully avoided by you flicking your sister’s nose which redirects her attention towards you. Big Erika is distracted by Maho simply calling her name.

Time flies and soon the festival is over, with the last of the guests streaming off Black Forest or into the single hotel in the centre. Your party doesn’t leave though and instead you eventually migrate to Black Forest’s tankery warehouse. There’s more than one, and all of them dwarf yours back on Ooarai. They also have their aviation facilities set up close by, though theirs includes a short runway. It has a small business jet sitting on it.

“This is it,” you hear Erika sigh reluctantly from behind you. Maho has disappeared into the warehouse to get her things.

“Say, what happened to that tank parade?” You ask. “Did it happen?”

“It did, but we missed it because we were with Maho,” Koume replies.

“Wasn’t it meant to be for her?”

“It was mine to skip,” Maho says, emerging from the warehouse. There’s almost a hundred members of the Black Forest Sensha-Do club behind her. “I wished to say goodbye in my own way.”

“And so will we,” Erika mutters before clearing her throat. “Girls! Form up!” You can see them rush to take positions either side of the walkway to the jet she’ll be taking. You can tell from how they move it’s been practiced before.

“Three years and they still manage to surprise me,” Maho mutters with a smile. She takes another look at the neat lines they’re in before turning to you. “I’ll be looking forward to seeing you again, Fritz.”

>"Not if I see you first, now go enjoy Germany."

“I shall give it my best shot,” she replies. She holds out a hand to shake, which you take, but use to pull her into a hug. “Now I must face the girls.”

“You sound a little reluctant,” you observe. She doesn’t deny it, so you decide to prod a little more. “The great Maho Nishizumi scared to say goodbye?”

That earns you a flat glare, but it’s enough to get her to steel herself and begin marching towards the plane. You can see the girls lining the walk are just as emotional as Erika, even if they’re slightly better at hiding it.

Erika ends up being unable to hide it at all, and you can see the tears streaming down her face. Maho pauses to wipe them away and give Erika a hug before boarding the Jet. Maho’s two crewmates going with her also pause to say something to Erika and Koume moves over to comfort Erika as Maho leaves.

You consider going over yourself, but Koume seems to have it in hand, and it’s getting late. Thankfully, Miho is still around and had transport back to Ooarai already planned, meaning you’re able to catch a lift with her back to your schoolship.

Monday 9th October (Day 175)

When you wake up that morning, you’re reminded by mass text that filming begins that day. The club has apparently spend the weekend filming scenes that only require extras and acquiring costumes from the art club. There’s also a message from the film club about the targets being slightly delayed due to them helping with the costumes, but it’s already been okayed by Miho and you’re not going to be doing any serious practice for a while so you have no problems either.

You’re left with a little time before filming begins to get any errands done.

>Find out where the beer you left in the helicopter went.

As you watch Otto stare down his stuffed lookalike, you remember that you left two cases of beer in the helicopter so you wouldn’t have to carry it around. You then also remember that alcohol is strictly controlled on a schoolship, so you probably shouldn’t leave it lying around where someone could find it.

You dial Erwin, who picks up a moment later.

“Hello?” Comes the greeting through a yawn.

“Hi Erwin,” you reply. “Are you awake?”

“Well I am now,” she yawns again. “What do you need?”

“I left some boxes in the helicopter last night, you took it home right?”

“We sure did,” she replies. “We left the beer where it was.”

You cringe as she says it. Erwin’s not likely to tell on you, but once a secret’s known, it’s hard to keep it in.

“Right, thanks Erwin,” you say before you end the call. With an idea of where it is, you quickly dress, eat, and head out to the warehouse.

You head to the aviation club warehouse first and make a beeline for the helicopter you used. Thankfully, all your stuff is still there, so you’re able to grab the bags then take it with you into the warehouse to discreetly stash inside Werewolf.

With that done, you turn your attention back to the upcoming filming. The first scene to be filmed involves you, and it’s your first meeting with the main protagonist played by Miho. Your job is to challenge her right to be at the race, and generally be a dick to her. It’ll be tough given it’s Miho you’re doing it to, but you’re willing to give it a shot.

>Be dramatic, it is a racing drama after all.

You decide to be dramatic given it’s a racing drama. You’re in a row of garages that’s been dressed to look like a pitstop. You can see the rest of the club spread out with their tanks by each of the garages, leaning over as if they’re working on them.

“Alright, Commander,” Yusa hums, looking at her clipboard. “You know your job; you and your guys have to walk up to Commander Nishizumi and rip into them. It might be hard, but I’ve already talked to them, they won’t take it personally.”

“Understood,” you nod. Your crew filter in around you. They’re dressed in similar uniforms to you, though they’re all slightly varied. Axel has no sleeves, and Ruby has a skirt.

“Ready everyone! Get to your places!” Eiga shouts through a megaphone. “Action!”

The rest of the club spring into action, working on their tanks or walking around making busywork. You watch Miho and Anglerfish team walk forwards, doing a convincing job of looking very out of their depth.

You wait till they reach a very small mark on the floor before marching forwards.

“So, you’re the newbies?” You begin with a sneer as you approach.

“Uh, yeah, we-”

“Five minutes,” you say, cutting Miho off. “A team as pathetic as yours wouldn’t last any longer than that.”

“They wouldn’t make it past the first lap!” Max jeers getting a cruel laugh from Leo.

“Don’t you talk to us like that!” Saori begins, stepping up. “I’ll have you-”

“Don’t YOU talk to ME like that!” You bellow stepping forwards. You’re not quite as big as Axel, but it has the desired effect of forcing the five of them back a step. “My family has been winning this race before you were a twinkle in your mother’s eye! Stay out of it or I’ll make sure you stay down.”

You do an about-face on your heel and march off in the other direction.

“Cut!”

You breathe a sigh of relief and drop character. ou walk back over to where everyone is gathering around Eiga.

“You can be…scary when you want to be, Fritz,” Miho murmurs to you.

>“Blame my mother.”

“Oh yeah, I know what you mean,” Miho nods sagely. “Maho really liked your mother though.”

“That’s because Maho is not me or my sister,” you reply with a sigh. “So, she didn’t have to see the ugly side.”

“I know exactly what you mean,” Miho nods again.

“Well, good news!” Eiga shouts, butting in. “That take was perfect, we can keep moving!”

“Which scene is next?” You ask.

“It’s the main characters’ moment of doubt,” she replies. “If you’re involved get on set. If not, go away!”

You check your script and see you’re not part of it. You therefore get out of the way to watch as it’s filmed.

It takes place chronologically a few scenes after the one you just shot and is about Miho’s team having a crisis regarding the race. You have to admit, Miho does a good job of looking indecisive and down. You wonder if she’s drawing on her experience at the beginning of the year. The real star of the scene though, at least from what you can see, is Saori who does a good job as being the main supportive friend.

A few other scenes are shot, but none of them involved you. Your crew are involved though, either in the background or throwing a line or two at someone else.

>Hang out with the Council.

At lunch, you head to the council office as usual. None of them seem to be working particularly hard, and you’re pleased to see that the turtle you won Yuzu is sitting pride of place on her desk.

“Slow day? You ask as you take a seat on one of the chairs opposite Anzu.

“Sure is,” she drawls. “Most of the heavy lifting is done, now we’re just placeholders until the next group of poor suckers to take our place.”

>“So you mentioned rigging the election, who did you have in mind?”

“Fritz, don’t encourage her!” Yuzu begins immediately.

“Easy, easy,” you reply, holding your hands out. “I never said I was going to help, I just wanted to find out who Anzu had in mind to replace her.”

“We might not even need to rig it,” Anzu shrugs. “It’s more of a last resort, just in case option.”

“But who?” You ask, cutting into the argument.

“For President I was thinking Isuzu, she has a good head about her and I know for a fact that she has good leadership skills, even if she doesn’t usually show them.”

“How do you know?”

“Yuzu,” Anzu replies. You glance over at your girlfriend who just shrugs.

“We’re friends.”

“Regardless, for VP and PR manager I’m flexible. I was thinking Takebe for PR manager since she’s good with people. For VP someone diligent like Akiyama should do.”

“No Miho?”

“Generally, someone that’s head of a big club doesn’t get elected to something else,” Yuzu says.

“That and I want her to focus on tanks,” Anzu says. “If she can win another tournament for us to prove this year wasn’t a fluke, then all the better.”

“Understandable,” you nod before considering that for a minute. “You don’t do any work though.”

“No work that you see,” Anzu counters. “For example, when your cat comes over I make sure to take good care of him.”

“What a challenging task,” Momo says drily.

“I’m glad you finally acknowledge how much I suffer and toil for the two of you,” Anzu drawls. “Anyways, the plan is to see how the election goes then use you as an ‘independent observer’ to ‘make sure the voting is legitimate’”.

>“Would they even allow that? It’s easy to see we’re pretty close.”

“Exactly,” Yuzu nods. “The entire school knows we’re dating, and the other half knows you spend every other lunch in here. In what way could you pretend he’s an independent observer?”

“Yeah, probably,” Anzu replies. “The Public Morals Committee likes you, so that’ll be enough for most people.”

“They do? Since when?”

“Sodoko likes that you usually run a tight ship at the Sensha-Do club, since she has to be part of it.,” Anzu explains. “I’ve already chatted to them about the idea and they have no objections to you being there.”

“So, it’s possible then,” you say.

“Possible, but not likely to go well,” Yuzu adds from her desk.

“I just want to make sure Ooarai is in good hands is all,” Anzu says back. “I wouldn’t be doing my job if I did anything else.”

You look to Momo. “You’ve been awfully quite so far. Do you have any thoughts on this idea?”

“I think that elections worked out well for Ooarai for the last few years, so it probably will this year as well,” she says after a moment’s deliberation.

“So, you think that we should just try do this legitimately?”

She takes another second to consider that. “Yes, I think that the President is pretty popular, so any candidate she picks to back will have a good chance. That and aside from Akiyama, the candidates she has in mind are popular with the rest of the school. If they ran together, they stand a good chance.”

“Chance Kawashima, it isn’t guarenteed,” Anzu replies. “We’ve worked hard to protect the school, let’s leave it in safe hands.”

>“The two of them have a point Anzu, why not do this properly?”

“I’d just prefer not to leave it to chance,” Anzu sighs. “I know we stand a good one, but what if it goes wrong? What if our opposition manages it on the day?”

“This is starting to sound a lot like Ooaraigate,” Yuzu mumbles from her desk.

“Besides, think about Hana, Saori and Yukari. Do you think any of them would really want to take charge if they found out it happened because of us rigging it, Anzu.”

She looks between the three of you in turn, settling on each of you for a moment before moving on to the next. Then with a sigh, she sits back and relaxes. “Fine. We’ll do it your way. No rigging.”

That gets a small cheer from Yuzu and a satisfied nod from Momo.

“Don’t worry, Prez, we’ll handle getting them elected, easy as!” Yuzu chips in.

“You guys won in your first year, right? If you could win then, doing it again should be a piece of cake,” you say.

That evening, practice is again used to film the movie. Almost the entire club is present to take part in the scene.

“Alright ladies!” Eiga announces, gathering everyone’s attention. “We’re going to be shooting part of the race! It’s in the evening, very early into the race so you’ll all need to be as flashy as possible! Whatever you do, do not attempt an overtake! It’s far too dangerous and would harm the script!”

You can hear some grumbling from Leopon team at that, but everyone agrees and begins to move to their tanks. There are a couple of teams that need everyone inside to film scenes inside the tank. Yours isn’t one of them so it’s just you and Max.

>“The lady said flashy, Max. Have fun.”

“Aye aye, Cap’n,” Max replies with a grin in his voice.

“All drivers,” Eiga’s voice comes over the radio. “Remember, it’s an entire lap. We have cameras around the entire circuit but we can’t keep this much of the city closed for too long, so we have to make it count!”

“We’re in the lead Max,” you say upon hearing Eiga’s instructions. “That means we don’t have to be mindful of anyone.”

“Even better,” he chuckles.

The second that Eiga says action, Max is off. Tanks don’t usually move particularly fast, but you can hear the whir as Max pushes your turbines to the limit. You’re forced to hold onto your cupola and your hat. Eiga wanted all of the commanders apart from those who need to be talking outside the tank where their face can be seen. What that means in practice is trying not to let your face look funny because of the wind as you’re thrown about during high speed manouvers.

The first corner is a relatively mild one. Max doesn’t bother slowing down, instead going over the grass inside it at full speed. That ends up giving him a better line on the next one which is far sharper, and he’s able to drift it. You cringe at the screeching of the tracks for a moment before remembering you’re meant to be cool and collected.

You round the corner at high speed and continue on a straight. Max continues to pick up speed before drifting another corner. You notice the lack of damage the manouver did to the road and realise that the film club have either reinforced or got someone to reinforce the corners to avoid it.

You slow for a hairpin before picking up speed again.

“Hey Fritz,” Max crackles over the radio. “How do you feel about some airtime?”

>“Can you make it look good?

“I sure can,” he replies quickly. Werewolf somehow picks up even more speed and thunders forward. You don’t even spot how he plans to get airtime till the last second. Some construction material that you’re not sure should’ve been there and you’re doubly sure won’t be able to take Werewolf’s weight seems to be his plan. You consider calling it off for a second, but at the speed he’s going and how far it is, all it’d do is put you in an even more dangerous position.

Werewolf flies up the ramp and launches off it. Thankfully the ramp only collapses after you’re off it.

You land with a thud and a flash of annoyance from Werewolf.

“Sorry buddy,” Max laughs. “It had to be done! It was vital for the movie!”

Werewolf doesn’t seem to like that explaination, but doesn’t do anything drastic, leaving you with a lingering sense of annoyance from him. The rest of the lap is without any more dramatics, aside from a few hairy drifts. You pass the spot you began and you’re directed to the side, off the track.

A few minutes later the rest of the club starts to arrive. As expected, the order is the same. Most of the tanks pull over by you, but some including Anglerfish team and Leopon team keep going.

You dismount and head over to a nearby Kuta. “Why are they going around?”

“We need more inside filming for Anglerfish team, so they’re going around again. As for Leopon I think they just wanted to go around while we’re filming so they have a highlights reel. I don’t know.”

With your part done, you and Max see about returning Werewolf to the warehouse. Everyone is doing it at the same time, so it takes a while, but soon he’s parked up for the night.

>Check you didn’t break anything important on Werewolf.

Max quickly begins to make his exit, but you grab him before he can.

“Not so fast,” you say as you tug his collar. “That landing sounded rough on the suspension. We’re going to take a look at it.”

“Aw what? We kept going just fine afterwards,” Max retorts. “Besides you were the one that gave the okay.”

“And that’s why I’m here with you,” you say, pulling him back. “Now get those roadwheels off.”

“I hate this bit,” he grumbles as the two of you get to work de-tracking the tank so you can work on it.

It ends up being more work than you’d hoped, but less work than you’d feared. Some of the wheels at the rear are shattered almost entirely, and all of them past the middle will need to be sent for repairs. Parts of the track also needs to be replaced, as the spots Werewolf landed on were crushed under his weight.

Werewolf is definitely making his annoyance known. Every time Max touches him he ends up on the floor groaning about bad visions a few minutes later. You eventually have to ask him to stop so you can make progress. It’s tough sweaty work, but the other members of your crew make an appearance to help with using the engineering tanks to tilt Werewolf when necessary. Between the five of you, you manage to finish the job at a reasonable hour.

Tuesday 10th October (Day 176)

That morning, more filming happens. It’s mostly revolving around the first twenty minutes, which is mostly the story of the main protagonists’ rise, but some minor bits are being filmed for other characters, including yours. The best part of that is the film club letting the rest of you choose an introduction.

>Tank drift into a crowded pit area.

You suggest drifting the tank into a crowded pit area since it’s both cool and involves tanks. Yusa who’s come to coordinate the introduction nods slowly as she considers it.

“Doable,” she says finally with a nod. “We’ll need to do a couple dry runs to figure out the timings, especially since we don’t want to hurt anyone, but it’s doable. A good choice too.”

Yusa looks around, considering the area you’ve been using to film the pit stop. “Okay, do some dry runs in that field over there, so we can see what we need to do. In the meantime, we’ll use that to prep the rest of your club.”

Yourself, your crew and Werewolf head over to the field and begin drifting, Yusa and a couple members of the film club’s technical team are watching and taking notes as you do.

After six or so tries, they decide they’ve seen enough, and head back to arrange things with the rest of the Sensha-Do club.

After about twenty minutes of prep, they’re ready. The plan is for Max to come in fast and loud, so everyone has plenty of time to get out of the way. There are also members of the film club on stand-by with radios, who’ll direct Max to abort and go down a path that will have nothing on it, just in case.

“We’re ready, gentlemen,” Eiga crackles over the radio. “We got ten of these to film, so the quicker the better.”

“Too quick and I’ll end up squashing you,” Max grumbles, over the intercom. “Ready here, Fritz.”

“Got it,” you reply before switching over to the radio. “We’re moving now.”

Max guns the engine and you rapidly begin moving towards the pits. You watch your club mates scatter as planned as you approach. You reach the marker signalling the beginning of the drift, and Max follows through. The drift goes well, and after Max neatly slots Werewolf in the right spot, the five of you casually climb out of the tank.

“Cut!” Eiga calls. “Good stuff! I think that’s a wrap!”

“I don’t know, I think I need to go once or twice more,” Max jokes.

The rest of the morning is spent helping with as many introductions as possible. Every team is going to get one, and since you’re also a competitor at the race, you’re in the background for a lot of them. You don’t do much aside from that, but occasionally you show up to be a dick to someone.

You don’t manage to film all of them, but you do manage to do most of them. More importantly, Anglerfish manages to finish filming the scenes they set out to do that morning, which was the whole point of being out that morning.

>Go to the mailroom and see if anything’s arrive for you.

Morning lessons pass quickly enough, and as soon as it’s lunch, you make a beeline for the mailroom.

When you arrive, the same schoolgirl is sitting in the corner ‘looking after’ the mail. She looks up and sees you as you walk in and fixes you with a vaguely disapproving frown.

“You again,” she mutters. “You’re a real pain in my back you know that?”

“Uh, sorry?” You offer, slightly confused. “I’m not sure what I’ve done to annoy you though.”

“Not metaphorically, literally,” she replies, still frowning. “Normal people receive letters, the Amazon parcel or two. Since you’ve arrived, I’ve had to deal with boxes that weigh half of what I do!”

“Oh, my bad,” you reply. “Where are they by the way?”

“At the back, I couldn’t be bothered to move them any further.”

You head to the back of the mailroom and find your HESH shells alongside a long package that must be the gun. You take one look at it before deciding to call the rest of your crew to get it out.

You spend the rest of lunch slowly moving it through the cramped hallways to get it to the surface where it can be loaded onto a vehicle. The mailroom girl is particularly unhelpful, refusing to say how she got it into the mailroom in the first place.

Once it’s finally out and loaded, you return to the mailroom to collect the HESH shells.

“Good riddance,” she groans as you leave.

>“Thanks for your help.”

>“So is sitting there your job or are you just going above and beyond?”

“I put a hundred and ten percent into this job,” she replies deadpan. “Me sitting here is perhaps the most important job on the schoolship – if people don’t get their amazon deliveries or messages from home, what do you think would happen? Anarchy, that’s what.”

“So what, you’re the only thing that stops the entire school becoming Johannesburg?” You ask skeptically.

“I sure am,” she nods, kicking back on her chair. “I’m glad you realise that now.”

“Right, whatever,” you sigh.

>“You can just tell me when heavy stuff for me comes in.”

“Believe me, I intend to,” she replies with a dark chuckle. “That’s the last time I drag crap around for the Sensha-Do club.”

You consider another scathing retort, but ultimately decide against it in favour of leaving her to sit around and going to afternoon lessons.

That evening when you arrive at the warehouse for practice, most of your crew is gathered around the packages. The HESH shells are sorted and added to the ammunition supply, and the gun has been unpacked and moved to the engineering section.

“It’s beautiful isn’t it,” your gunner murmurs, she holds out a hand to touch it, but flinches at the last second, as if she’s afraid of it shattering.

“Looks like a right pain to taxi around,” Max grumbles.

“Well that’s your job!” Ruby rounds on him, spinning to confront him. “You are just a chauffeur for this beauty. Understood!?”

“Easy, it’s not even installed yet,” you intervene, getting between the two of them.

>“Let’s see if there’s any filming to be done.”

“But Fritz,” Ruby whines. “The gun! If we delay, who knows if we’ll have it in time for our next match!?”

“We don’t have a match scheduled for weeks yet,” you reply, waving her complaints off. “However, this movie is on a timer, so we should probably get moving on that.”

“I hate it when you make sense,” she grumbles. “Alright then, let’s go.”

“Glad you can see sense,” you say as the five of you head into the attached theatre. It’s quite fittingly become the liaison office between the film club and the Sensha-Do club. It’s a little awkward, but it fits everyone that the film club needs.

“Hermann,” a very busy looking Eiga says as you approach. “Welcome to my office. What can I do for you?”

“My crew are free right now,” you say. Ruby makes to protest, but Axel effectively silences her. “Do you need us?”

“We’ve planned for some of your scenes tomorrow,” she hums. “But you can add to the background of some. You being menacing in the back of one or two of the other teams’ scenes could be useful. Let’s go!”

“If you want menacing, just stare down Axel,” Max quips as the five of you follow Eiga out of the building.

“Our main filming team is in the city, preparing to film about half of the individual action scenes,” she explains. “Yours are tomorrow, and the day after we’ll be filming the group scenes.

“And you’re not there?” Leo asks. “Are you not the director?”

“I’m heading out in a minute,” she explains. “Yusa will be directing the scenes you’re in tonight.”

The scenes aren’t particularly big ones for you. As Eiga said, you’re mostly just in the background doing something else, or have a couple of lines to help someone else’s team. The biggest part you play is in breaking up a fight between Axel and Duck team’s characters who’s gimmick is volleyball funnily enough.

>Talk to Anglerfish team about their starring role.

Once your part in the filming is done, you decide to pay a visit to Anglerfish team to see how they’re getting on with their part in the movie. It quickly ends up becoming a team visit given how interlinked your team is.

The five of you walk over to the far end of the warehouse where Anglerfish team are based. All five of them are present, sitting around a garden table they’ve set up between their tank and the wall.

“Hey guys!” Yukari shouts, waving furiously as they see you. “Come take a seat!”

“I want the one with Saori on it,” Leo says instantly. Some extra plastic chairs are found and after a moment’s rearranging, all ten of you have been squeezed around the table.

“So, the starring roles,” you begin. “How does it feel?”

“Huwah! It feels great!” Saori gushes. “I always knew I’d be a star, but not this early.”

“What kind of star?” Mako asks with a smug smile. Max gets it, hiding his laugh in a cough, but it goes over most of the group’s heads. Including Saori.

“A model, you know? Starring in commercials and adverts!”

“As you can tell, we’ve been having a lot of fun,” Miho says to you over Saori’s continued dreaming.

“It’s fun, but there’s not enough loading!” Yukari complains. “I haven’t fired the gun once! What good tank movie has no tank fights!?”

“You don’t like filming it?” You ask.

“I never said that!” She protests immediately. “Just that there are not enough tank fights! There should be at least one!”

>“If you’re itching that much, why not go find one?”

>“You can always ask the film club, they might include it even at this stage.”

“Really?” Yukari replies. “You think they would?”

“They were pretty flexible when it came to the introductions,” you reply. “We’re still less than halfway through filming, if you take the idea to them, then they might be able to find a way to work it in to the movie itself.”

Yukari looks to Miho, then back to you, then back to Miho again. Miho just giggles, which Yukari takes as approval. She shoots up and out of her chair, rushing towards the theatre as fast as she can.

“Some things don’t change, huh?” You ask Miho, who just shakes her head.

Yukari returns a few minutes later, with a noticeable spring in her step.

“How’d it go?” Miho asks as she retakes her seat.

“They said they’d consider it!” Yukari chirps. “They said it might be a good way to spice things up at the end!”

“Well, what did I say? Ask and ye shall receive.” The rest of the night is spent in the warehouse with Anglerfish team. Snacks and drinks are acquired from the lounge area and it’s an enjoyable evening. Nothing in particular gets done, apart from your driver and radioman’s usual game of winding up your gunner, but it’s all in good spirits, and you go home smiling.

That morning, you wake up to a phone call from an unknown number. You slowly remove your arm from under Otto, shake some blood into it and flail it in the general direction of the phone.

“Hello?” You ask, yawning.

“Hermann,” Eiga’s familiar voice says. “You need two teams of underlings for today’s filming. Bring them and their tanks to the spot we’ve been using to film the pit stop.” She then promptly hangs up.

>The Public Morals Committee

Two teams immediately come to mind, your sister, and the Public Morals Committee. Erika can probably do a good job of being a bad guy and the Public Morals Committee is almost universally disliked and seeing them lose should do wonders for the domestic audience.

The Public Morals Committee is easy to get a hold of, a short text to Sodoko informing her of the new plans gets a quick reply confirming their availability. Your sister is slightly harder to get a hold of. She doesn’t answer her phone, and her crew have no luck either, so you make your way over to her apartment and let yourself in using the spare key.

She’s there alright, phone dead, and thoroughly unprepared for school, let alone morning practice.

“Wake up, sleepyhead! I need you!” You shout as you shake her awake. Erika blearily throws a punch, which misses your head by about half a meter.

“Fuh? Fritz?” She yawns as she sits up. “What are you doing here?”

“Why aren’t you ready for practice?” You shoot back.

“My alarm goes off in five minutes,” she explains, lying back down.

“Which gives you fifteen to make it to practice in the morning?” You ask flatly.

“Yep! Maximising sleep!” She says.

“Well get up,” you say, yanking the blanket off her. “We got filming to do.”

Ten minutes later, Erika’s ready and the two of you are out the door. She seems to be enthused at the idea of being a villain, even if it’s only as an underling.

“So, Fritz,” she begins, drawing you out of your musing. “Why me?”

>“Because I knew you’d love to be a villain.”

“What? Me? No way,” Erika scoffs. “I used to cheer while watching power rangers you know!”

“For the rangers or the bad guy?” You ask amused.

“Uh, I plead the fourth?”

“The fifth,” you reply with a chuckle. “Unless you plan to waste me once we reach the warehouse.”

The two of you get to the warehouse after a short walk. Your crews and the Public Morals Committee area already there with the tanks out front. You and Erika mount up and make your way onto land where the film club is filming.

“You certainly took your time,” Eiga complains as you reach the pit stops.

“Not used to working with high maintenance movie stars?” You reply as you dismount. “Talk me through the scene.”

“It’s a pretty straight forward one,” she replies. “Lackeys arrive in their tanks, come in for a briefing. You tell them to give Anglerfish the dirty. It’s all in the script, but feel free to play around with it. Your movie and all that.”

With that, she marches away to have a go at the camera crew. You get yourself and your crew into position inside your pitstop garage and wait.

The scene begins with Erika’s team and the Public Morals Committee rolling up and stopping outside the building. You watch as the camera follows them in after they dismount. All eight of them enter. Them plus the five of your crew make it rather cramped, but you ignore it and focus.

“You came,” you begin slowly, eyeing the two of them. “Took you long enough.”

“You call! We answer!” Sodoko shouts. Her delivery is slightly stunted, but she’s no actress.

You chuckle and continue. “Good, good. As you should when your betters have need of you.”

“You tell us boss, anything you need! We’ll get her done!” Erika adds.

>“The newbies, look after them for me during the race, will you?”

>“I want the new team in a hospital or worse before the end of the race, understood?”

“Understood!” The Sodoclones say in unison. The delivery is still slightly off, but they saying it in sync makes it a tad bit more sinister, perfect for evil underlings.

“They’ll be has-beens before you know it,” Erika’s driver says.

“No, no,” Erika cuts in. “They won’t be has-beens. We’ll end them before they get a chance to be.”

“I knew there was a reason I kept you around,” you say, nodding approvingly at Erika’s words. “Now go. Don’t return unless you’re on your tank or the new girls are on theirs.”

You watch as the eight of them pile out of the room. It’s only after all of them are gone that Eiga finally calls to end the scene and you’re able to break character. Eiga makes you repeat it twice more, before deciding that the first take was the best one. You’re mildly annoyed, but at the end of the day she just wants the best movie she can get. Thankfully, it’s hard to mess up climbing off a tank so there’s no need to redo that.

Filming your scene takes up most of morning practice, but you return in time to see other efforts. Rabbit team have commandeered some of the empty space in the warehouse and are using it to practice their lines. Duck team also claim that they’re practicing by playing volleyball as their characters are volleyball players as well as tank racers.

You ask Kuta about that who just groans “persistence” and refuses to answer any more questions.

>Talk to the history club about returning to the port.

At lunch you don’t head to the council office as usual. You instead head to the classroom that the history club usually occupies.

“Mackensen,” Caesar nods in greeting as you enter. “Here to discuss visiting Kochi again?”

“Sure am,” you nod. “How’d you know?”

“Well, it’s all we can think about,” Erwin says. “We didn’t think it’d be any different for you.”

“Yeah not really,” you admit. “This is something I want to see through.”

“Leaving something this important unfinished does not sit well with us either,” Oryou nods sagely.

“So, when do the four you want to go?” You ask as you pull a chair out and sit down in it. “I’m ready when you four are.”

“The problem isn’t free time, it’s free time worth a damn,” Saemonza replies. Before you can ask what that means, Caesar speaks.

“We have time every evening, the problem is that it takes a while to get there and back so we don’t have much time to work.”

“We can’t ask the President to move the ship closer because of the filming taking place in Ooarai, so we can’t fix it that way,” Erwin adds. “We could just go anyway, get what little we can done every day till we’re free.”

“And the alternative is waiting till the weekend, right?” You ask.

“When we have more filming to do, and the culture festival starting shortly afterwards,” Oryou adds.

“So we’re booked up for a while yet,” you grunt as you consider it.

>“We might as well go out and get started then, even if we have to go out again.”

“We were hoping you’d say that,” Caesar sighs in relief as the four of them stand. “It’s like an un-scratchable itch this damn mystery. Even if we find nothing it’s better than waiting around.”

“Well, the filming for the movie has been distracting, but I can’t say I disagree,” you reply. “Meet at the heliport in half an hour?”

“We shall see you there,” Oryou confirms.

You dash home to change and grab some snacks for the journey. When you reach the heliport, you find that the club has already secured a helicopter for use and is going through the pre-flight checks. You join them aboard and after another five minutes running through the checklist before lift-off.

The journey is much the same, and when you arrive Haru is on the desk again.

“You five,” he sighs as he spots you. “Elevator is that way, have fun.”

“Weren’t you told to come with us?” Caesar asks.

“That was last time,” he says. “This time is different.”

“How?” She asks.

“Because you’ve already been down there. Now go.”

“Do we have to go see the harbourmaster to sort this out?” You ask. Haru freezes at that. He seems to consider continuing to resist but gives in with a sigh.

“I dislike the five of you,” he says as he heads for the elevator. You all follow him down to the archives where he lets you in then walks off. The room looks exactly as you left it, with the most recent and well sorted archives first and the oldest at the back of the room.

The five of you survey the room for a moment as Haru mumbles an excuse about needing to man the desk.

Erwin mutters something about there being more man behind the desk when he isn’t there, but Haru either doesn’t care or doesn’t hear and leaves the five of you to it.

“Split the room and get started on it?” You ask.

“Sure,” Caesar nods. The rest of the girls follow her lead and you quickly split the unsorted section between you. You end up in a particularly decrepit looking part of the archives. You give a box in front of you that looks half rotten a tug. You stop a second later when the entire shelf starts to wobble.

“Fritz! Back!” One of them shouts. You don’t question it, leaping backwards as fast as you can. You collide with the shelf behind you and a couple boxes fall off. You’re fine with that though as it means you aren’t in the way of the falling boxes.

“Are you alright!?” Erwin asks as she rushes over, the rest of the club right behind her.

“Yeah, thanks for the warning,” you say, nudging the box with your foot. “Shame about the mess.”

“It doesn’t look much worse than when we arrived,” Saemonza grumbles as she picks through the boxes on the floor. “They’ll never…know.”

“Something the matter?” Erwin asks, bending down to have a look. “Huh, 1946. Good find Mackensen.”

“I used my head,” you reply getting a snicker from Oryou. The five of you begin examining the boxes and it doesn’t take you long to find the records of Ooarai docking.

“Nagayama shipping,” you say, reading the name of the company that offloaded hundreds of tons of something off the ship.

“Local company,” Oryou says, looking it over. “You can tell from the spelling.”

“Alright,” you reply, taking that in. Erwin is already noting down details of interest, so you decide to roll with it. “Caesar, come with me and we’ll go ask if we can take proper photocopies back to Ooarai with us. The rest of you start taking pictures and notes so we can have something if they say no.”

“Aye, Mackensen,” Erwin replies from her position next to the box. The three of them carefully begin pulling out all the documents related to the schoolship and Nagayama while you and Caesar head for the elevator.

It’s a short trip up to the reception, and you let Haru know you need to see the Harbourmaster. He gives you another lethargic glare before sighing and making the call. You’re invited up about ten minutes later.

“You guys again, weren’t there more of you last time?” He asks as you and Caesar enter.

“The others are still downstairs,” Caesar replies. “We’ve found the documents we’re looking for.”

“Oh, you have?” He asks, eyebrow raised. You can’t tell if he’s feigning interest or not. “What year is it from?”

“1946,” you reply. “We’d like to photocopy it if you don’t mind.”

“Well, it’s more than thirty years ago, so there shouldn’t be any problems on that end,” he grumbles. “What is it?”

“Records of our ship docking here for the first time,” Caesar replies.

“Right, right. History guys,” he recalls. “Well, there shouldn’t be a problem, just get Haru to take you to reprographics. This is purely for personal reasons though, right?”

>“Well, does schoolwork count as personal reasons?”
>“Yeah, we’re just interested in this kinda thing.”
>“1940s shipping logs are our passion, sir.”

>“Yeah, we’re just interested in this kinda thing.”
“You are, are you?” He mutters. He grumbles something under his breath about weird kids and you honestly can’t blame him – you'd probably feel the same way in his position. He doesn’t stop you from leaving though. You take your message down to receptionn where you get another flat glare when you inform Haru that you have a job for him. He doesn’t refuse, but he does his level best to drag the process out. You get your photocopies though, and soon the five of you are heading out, hopefully never to be delayed by Haru again.
Plans to scrutinise the photocopies are cut short by filming continuing. You can see everyone gearing up to go out, letting you know it’ll be a big scene being filmed.
You quickly change into your costume and head to your tank where your crew is already waiting. You find out from Ruby that you’ll be filming one of the major race scenes – the point where your minions make their attempt on the main protagonists.
The club rolls out to head into Ooarai where parts of the road have been cleared and blocked off for your filming. You don’t have very long to film, but Eiga intends to make the most of it, quickly organising the lot of you and proceeding with filming. The plan is for the camera to film you and your crew sticking out of your tank as the attempt takes place behind you.
You decide...

>Not to look. Cool dudes don’t look at crashes.

>To watch impassively. One more obstacle eliminated.

>To congratulate your minions on pushing Miho to last place.

>To watchimpassively. One more obstacle eliminated.

You keep yourturretand head facing forwards for most of the lap. You wait until you reach the prearranged spot before checking for anyone nearby androtating yourturretso you can watchthe scenethat’sunfolding behind you.

Miho,Erika, and the Public Morals Committee are currently in the front third of the race. Your minions having startedthere, and Miho having worked her way there from the back. You watch as they take up positions on either side of Miho. Erika next to her on her right and the Morals Committeeslightlybehind on her left. You see your sister take a moment to steel herself before nudging Miho with her tank. The Panzer IV veers left, and the back-leftof it collides with thePublic Morals Committee, causing Miho and her girls to spin out into arow of condemned buildings that had been especially weakened to collapse safely anddramatically. You watch till you turn the corner and Miho is out of view. You then turn theturretaround again and face forward.

“We’re all okay!” Miho sounds off over the radio. Outwardly you do nothing –you'restill being filmed, butinwardlyyou sigh in relief. You’drather not see anyone injured over a movie.

The filming continues long enough for Anglerfish to say their lines and begin digging themselves out of the rubble. The scene ends shortly afterward, both becauseOoaraiwants the roads back and becauseEigadecides the club has what it needs from the city today. However, filming does continue pastthe end of practice. Your minions are getting their own scene andAnglerfishteam is filming anothersincethey arethe main characters.

>Find your girlfriend, it’s been like three days.

You decide not to dally. You wish the Sodoclones good luck and ruffle Erika’s hair before leaving them to it. You make your way out of the warehouse and towards the tower, where the student council has their primary office.

You enter the office and find all three of them there, plus your cat. None look to be doing any work.

“Slow day?” You ask.

“Slooooow day,” Anzu nods, dragging the word out. “Most of our work nowadays is in co-ordinating with the film club. It’s more of a Sensha-Do club thing, but we need something to do, you know?”

“I do know,” you reply as you take a seat opposite Yuzu. “The History Club and I have been working on the gold.”

“Find anything interesting? Hidden treasure?” Anzu asks, sitting up.

“Unless you mean musty old documents, no,” you reply, grinning as Anzu visibly deflates. “We’re making progress though; we were able to bring photocopies of those documents we needed back with us so we can go through them when we get a chance.

“Kawashima, do you think I could get them out of lessons to look into this?” Anzu asks, turning to Momo nearby.

“Probably not, President,” Momo replies getting a curse from Anzu.

“Oh well, it’s not like it’s going anywhere if it’s still around,” Anzu grumbles. “I hope we can find it before the end of school though.”

“We have months till then, I’m sure Fritz and the history girls can find it well before then,” Yuzu chimes in.

“Well, I suppose he’s not let us down yet,” Anzu sighs.

“That I haven’t,” you nod.

>“Now I’m taking Yuzu, I’ll bring her back in the morning.”
>“I need my girlfriend and my cat. I’ll give them back eventually.”
>“You three want to go out somewhere?”

>“Now I’m taking Yuzu, I’ll bring her back in the morning.”

“You are?” Yuzu asks, eyebrow raised.

“I am,” you reply as you stand.

She thinks about it for two seconds. “I guess you are..”

“I guess he is,” Anzu adds with a small smile. You hear Momo snort and shake her head, hiding a smile.

“Look after my cat,” you say as the two of you walk out.

“He’s basically mine now!” Anzu shouts back as you close the door.

The two of you walk out of the tower and head towards the port. You consider getting your bike, but Yuzu overrules you and you can’t find it in you to protest, especially since it means you get to walk and talk.

“So what have you three been doing for the film?” You ask as you descend the ramp onto the dock.

“Aside from all the logistics of it and making sure you and Miho don’t have to deal with it? We have a supporting part too. Only a couple of lines though and one scene by ourselves.”

“Do you want more? I could probably talk to Eiga, she’s been pretty good about including any suggestions we have into filming,” you offer only to be firmly shut down by Yuzu.

“Nuh uh, Anzu might take you up on that, but I’m firmly a background person. Think beautiful extra number three.”

“Well, if you’re sure you’re sure,” you shrug. “Where shall we eat?”

“I don’t mind,” she replies. You’re instantly on guard.

“Is that an actual ‘I don’t mind’ or a girlfriend ‘I don’t mind’?” You ask cautiously

“What do you mean by that?” She replies. “I mean I don’t mind!”.

>Press her to pick at least a couple of places to choose from.

>That one place they get Katsu from and then eat at the end of the flight deck

“What about that place you usually get Katsu from?” You ask. “We can grab that and head for Ooarai’s End.”

“Well, that place is on the schoolship,” Yuzu replies, wheeling you around.

“I guess we’re heading back to the ship then,” you say. “That was a nice walk.”

“We sure got a good view of the port and the pier side,” Yuzu continues. You make the short journey back to the ship and up to the katsu place. Yuzu has the foresight to order ahead, meaning you don’t have to wait, and instead you’re able to take your food to go.

You reach Ooarai’s End a short while later. Unfortunately, the ship is headed away from the sunset, but you still get a great view of the horizon. You open your katsu and you’re mildly delighted to see it looks like someone dropped a Panther off a building. A look at Yuzu’s reveals a similarly deformed Hetzter.

“He’s trying to branch out,” Yuzu explains. “As you can see, anything other than vaguely tank-shaped is still beyond him.”

“Well, it’s the thought that counts, right? Either way, it tastes good.”

“Very good,” Yuzu nods as she steals a roadwheel from you. You let her have it, real roadwheels are enough trouble, let alone edible ones.

Thursday 12th October (Day 178)

That morning when you head into practice, you find out that you’re going to be filming the continuation of the last scene you filmed, with Anglerfish slowly making a comeback. That requires the entire club to be on the field so you help with organising that before filming begins and all of you roll out into town. You’re not going to be able to film any of it on the road as Ooarai isn’t willing to part with them during rush hour, but you can film the bits where everyone’s inside their tanks.

>You’re growing more and more agitated as Anglerfish team advance, frantically ordering your minions to do something.
>You’re attempting to remain cool and calm, coordinating with your minions to keep Anglerfish behind.
>You’re oblivious to the danger behind you. Anglerfish is in last, there’s no way they’re coming back!

>You’re attempting to remain cool and calm, coordinating with your minions to keep Anglerfish behind.

You decide to continue with the character you’ve built as you mount up and close all the hatches. Max starts Werewolf and gets moving in a rough circle, varying speed and course as he fancies to simulate the racecourse.

“Alright, Hermann,” Kuta says softly as Max opens up the throttle. “You can just say your lines into the radio, and the cameras are already running. I’ll be reading the lines that aren’t yours or your crews’. Start when you’re ready.”

“Sure thing, thanks Kuta,” you reply. You let Max drive for a couple of minutes to get back into things before speaking.

“Report. Now.”

“Boss, they’re gaining on us, boss,” Kuta deadpans one of Erika’s lines. It throws you slightly, but you soldier on.

“Gaining how!?” You demand. “They spun out into last, how are they gaining places?”

“They’re using the slipstream of other tanks,” Kuta replies for Sodoko.

“With tanks like these, that should be impossible!” Max shouts as he takes a particularly nasty imaginary corner. “The skill and coordination – unprecedented!”

“Well, it looks like someone’s setting it,” Ruby quips.

“Hng, well that’s no good,” you grumble into the mike. “My lead is secure, I have almost a minute on the next person. Start dropping places to get closer to her.”

“What? Come on, boss,” Kuta says for Erika again. “You said I could come second this time.”

“Which is contingent on me coming first,” you retort with a snort. “Which isn’t going to happen if you sit around with a thumb up your ass, is it?”

“Sounds like something crawled up yours,” Kuta says. You have to hide a smirk as that sounds exactly like something Erika would say.

“I’m going to pretend I didn’t hear that,” you say magnanimously.

>“Take them out, even if it costs you your tank.”
>“Deal with them. Permanently.”
