>In the year 20XX...

"Project Zero has been initiated. Zero, report to the command terminal for debriefing."

Those are the first words you hear as you awaken. Your birthplace is a metallic tube in a dust-covered research laboratory. Only a select few concepts are present in your mind: how to fight, how to kill, the schematics of your design, and your absolute and resolute allegiance to your father, Dr. Albert Wily.

You step out of the tube and walk to the computer terminal across from the tube's open face, then press a large red button labeled "ACTIVATE". A voice comes out of speakers laid out throughout the lab room you're standing in.

"User identified: Zero."

"So, that's my name. Zero." You think to yourself.

"Special report: Zero activation protocol. Message loading. Please wait." A spinning circle appears on the screen in front of you before a black box fills the screen. At it's center, an old man with wild hair flowing in different direction. You recognize him immediately as your father, and then you hear his voice.

"Zero, if you are hearing this, then a horrible thing has happened. I, Dr. Albert Wily, the greatest scientific genius of all time, have died at the hands of the horrific Dr. Light and his malevolent robotic menace of a son, Megaman. A microchip was installed into my brain which was set to send an activation signal to your holding container in the event of my death. Your purpose, as my greatest invention, is to avenge my death and activate my final project hidden in the secret base of the nefarious Dr. Thomas Light. You must destroy the eight monsters who have stolen sensitive data on this project: Megaman, Roll, Protoman, Rush, Bass, Treble, Dr. Light himself, and his newest creation: a deadly creature known only as X who is hidden with him inside of his secret base. The former 6 each have fragments of map data which will lead you to Dr. Light and X encrypted in their memory drives. Zero, you are the pinnacle of robotic design and combat ability. My legacy is in your hands, my son. Do not fail me."

Rage washes over you. Father? Dead? Those damnable beasts will pay for what they've done!

>STAGE SELECTED: MEGAMAN

"Computer," you call out, anger in your voice. "Where is Megaman!?"

"Calculating... Calculating... Calibrating network... location confirmed. Megaman is located 13 miles East by 2 miles South from your current location. Updating your information database. Would you like to teleport to the nearest beam in location?"

A tracking system uploads into your vision, showing you your current position relative to Megaman's, down to the centimeter. With this, it'll be easy for you to track him from the beam in location.

"Computer, activate beam in."

"Confirmed. To return to this location, activate escape protocol. Good luck, Zero."

A bright light surrounds you, obscuring your vision. When it clears, you find yourself in the middle of a populated city. The tracking program in your head shows Megaman to be less than a half mile away -- deeper into the city. Suddenly, you hear a woman's scream.

"A Wily bot!" You hear her cry out. "Help! Help!"

As she screams out, a siren sounds in the city. Drones with red and blue lights on each side seem to come from every street corner.

"So, this is how they thank my father for his advances in the realm of robotics?" You think to yourself as the police drones come nearer to you. Over the siren, you hear an alert message blaring. It repeats every 10 seconds: "Proceed to your nearest safety shelter. This is not a drill."

Six police drones come nearer to you as people all around panic and run about in every direction.

>Shoot the police drones down with your Z-buster.
>Draw your Z-saber and slice through the police drones.
>Start attacking humans, ignoring the police drones.
>Try to disappear into the crowd in the excitement and find Megaman without fighting anyone.

You open fire with your Z-buster. The cheap police drones are slow to respond and quick to break apart. A single shot from your speedy Z-buster is enough to blow one to pieces.

"Taking fire! Requesting backup!" One yells out before blowing to bits. By the time they return fire, 4 of them had been blown apart, leaving nothing beyond fire and smoke in the air.

Two of the police drones opened fire on you, and one of them actually hit you.

"Ugh," you remark, a stinging sensation filling your gears. The damage was minimal, but obnoxious. "You think you can best me with these cheap plasma bolts? Pathetic." You return fire, destroying the remaining police drones.

By the time you've finished, the streets are nearly empty, save for a few nuts and bolts on the city streets. According to your location tracking software, Megaman is getting closer. He's nearly a quarter of a mile away, still. The police drones seem to have stopped their advance. Are they really trusting this so-called "Megaman" to take you down?

You have some time before Megaman gets to your location. You look around; there are storefronts nearby which have been abandoned, vehicles, and a newsdata stand.

>Raid a robotics store -- maybe there's something useful in there.
>Download today's news.
>Position some vehicles to fortify your position against incoming fire.
>Go to confront Megaman instead of staying in this spot.

You go up to a storefront labeled "High Quality Robotics". The front door is locked, but it's not match for your Z-saber; with a slash, you remove the front door and enter the building. A security alarm rings, which annoys you, but a quick shot to the loudspeaker from your Z-buster shuts it up.

Many of the items in the store are too primitive to use. You spend a short while looking around while your internal scanners look for compatible devices. Eventually, you find one.

Sitting on a top shelf is a small glass dome with a metal base. Your scanners tell you that it's an energy containment unit called a "sub tank". Using it will repair you quickly if you're in danger. A few "energy tanks", older models, are near it -- but those aren't compatible with your hardware.

You grab it and hold it up to your chest armor. A small opening appears in your chassis which allows for the insertion of the sub tank. Looks like you have enough space in there to store 3 more of them, but it looks like they're rare technology. You'll have to keep an eye out for them.

By the time the installation is complete, your tracking software shows that Megaman is only about 200 yards away. You could go out and confront him... or you could blindside him as he walks by.

>Go outside and start firing your Z-buster at Megaman. Maybe you can snipe him.
>Draw your Z-saber and wait in the street to confront him face-to-face at close range.
>Lie in wait to stab him in the back when he walks by the store.

You decide to sit back and wait for Megaman to put himself in danger. No sense in taking unnecessary damage, after all -- not that some piece of ancient tech could injure you. If he's anything like those police drones, he'll be easy pickings.

In less than a minute, you see him: the blue bomber. He's walking around with an arm-cannon out in front of him, paranoid. You can overhear him talking over some communication tech. He stops outside of the shop you're in to complete his conversation.

"I don't see a robot master anywhere around here, but he was definitely here. There's smashed up bits of police drones everywhere in these streets. But how could this happen? Didn't Bass blow up Dr. Wily's hovercar? ... No, I understand. You stay safe too, Roll. Megaman out."

That beast dared to speak your father's name without the reverence he is clearly due. Disgusting. As he walks past the door, you jump out at him and bring your Z-saber down to strike him from above...

... but he notices you just before you cleave him in half. He turns while jumping away from you, the Z-saber coming down and just scraping his shoulder, leaving wires exposed in his non-buster arm. You can see the pain in his face as he responds with a shot from his arm-cannon.

This one's way stronger than those police drones' pitiful plasma bolts. He's clearly overcharged the shot.

"Woah! What!? Who are you?" He yells out, holding the arm-cannon up to you and slowly moving backwards.

>Tell him who you are, then attack again with your Z-saber.
>Tell him who you are, then fire on him with your Z-buster.

"My name is Zero," you say, deactivating your Z-saber and raising your Z-buster to aim him down. "The finest creation of the genius Dr. Albert Wily -- and the one who is going to kill you."

"But Wily is --" He begins to respond, again disrespecting your father's name. You don't let him finish. A series of shots meets Megaman's body. Clearly in pain, he lets another shot out of his arm-cannon. Not nearly as overcharged as the last, which failed to hit you, but this one makes contact. Your chassis has a scorch mark, but no penetration.

You stumble back but quickly recover; Megaman has dropped down into a slide, positioning himself behind an abandoned car.

"Come out and face me, coward!" You yell. He doesn't respond.

>Leap over the car and come down on him with your Z-saber.

You run behind another abandoned car to take cover from an overcharged shot. What happens is something totally unexpected. You hear Megaman shout out:

"Guts mode, activate!"

And see the car Megaman was hiding behind flying through the air directly at the car you ran behind. In a split moment, you leap to the side; the two cars collide and bounce across the concrete. If you had stayed still, you would have been crushed. In the street, you see Megaman; but he looks different. His blue getup has turned yellow. Then Megaman shouts out:

"Metal mode, activate!" As his body turns red and circular saws come out of his shooting arm, which he swiftly throws at you. You dodge one and slice through the second with your Z-saber.

Megaman has a serious look on his face. Though you hate to admit it, you're fairly impressed by his versatility. He shouts out:

"Leaf mode, activate!" And his color scheme changes again; a swarm of leaves flies all around him.

"Enough of this," You think to yourself, running forward with your Z-saber. Megaman puts his hand out in front of him; the leaves swirling around him rush forward at you.

You leap into the air over the storm of leaves, executing a butterfly kick. As you reach the apex of your jump, you hear Megaman yell out:

"Heat mode, activate!"

But Megaman is too late to prevent incoming damage. You stab him through the chest with your Z-saber. Sparks fly into the air and he grimaces; then he puts his arm-cannon up to your chest.

Flames shoot around your chestplate, and you have no choice but to move back. Your Z-saber is firmly stuck into Megaman's body, and he looks to be in rough condition.

"Bomb mode, activate!" He yells, his voice modulator glitching at several phonemes. A bomb appears in his now open hand.

Megaman reaches up to throw the bomb he's holding. You take aim with your Z-saber and shoot it as he raises it up. A frightful look flashes across Megaman's face.

"No!" He yells. As the smoke clears, you see the result of the damage. Half of Megaman's helmet has been destroyed, and the arm holding the bomb is gone. Sparks are flying; you can see clearly that Megaman is nearly dead.

"Flash mode, activate!" He yells, terror in his voice. A purple color theme appears across his body. Then, you feel something strange.

Stars appear all around Megaman. You feel a glitch in your system. You can't move. Megaman starts limping toward the robotics store, High Quality Robotics. He must be trying to get to the energy tanks.

"Dr. L-L-Light," you hear him say, phonemes glitching out as he limps. "I'm sor-r-r-ry. This W-w-w-ily bot, Zero -- he's t-t-t-too much-uch-uch. If I'm n-n-not lucky here, I d-d-don't think-k-k-k I can m-m-m-make-ake-ake-ake it."

The purple color starts fading back to blue as he makes his way to the open doorway of High Quality Robotics.

Your struggle is helpless. Megaman pulls the Z-saber from his chest and tosses it to the ground outside of High Quality Robotics, then limps into the store. You see him go in and activate all of the energy tanks on the shelves.

Then you hear him call out: "Air mode, activate!"

You're suddenly able to move. A fully refreshed Megaman, completely healed, stands in the doorway. His arm-cannon is pointed at you. A gust of wind blows toward you from the open cannon hole. The Z-saber flies through the air, narrowly missing you, and plants itself into the ground just behind you. You feel the wind pushing you back, but you're able to mostly stay in place; you can't advance forward, though.

You can see there's no reason to be cocky, and activate your sub tank. Energy fills your body and you feel yourself completely healed; the sub tank is far more powerful and efficient than the old technology energy tanks that Megaman used, and it only takes one to heal you.

"Crash mode, activate!" Megaman calls out. He aims his arm-cannon at you and you can see a blinking light appear in its center. It fires at you, and you sidestep it. Behind you, there is an explosion that sends the Z-saber skipping across the ground in front of you.

"Dr. Light," Megaman says, "I've healed up, but I'm running low on weapon power. I'm going to do everything I can to stop him here, but if I can't, put the base on lockdown. Megaman out!"

Megaman's color changes again as he yells out "Bounce mode, activate!" Before you can react, three large bouncing balls shoot from his arm-cannon and begin bouncing towards you in tall, wide arcs.

You grab the Z-saber and duck under the bouncing balls, making your way closer to Megaman. He must be almost out of tricks, according to his last communication. As you make your way to him, you shoot the bouncing balls, which crash to and fro, destroying walls along the city streets before disappearing. One of them even bounces back and hits Megaman, sending him stumbling against a wall.

"Enker mode, activate!" You hear him cry out as you reach close to him. Raising the Z-saber, you take aim to cleave the blue bomber in half. Just before your blade makes contact with him, Megaman raises his hands.

An energy barrier appears between the two of you. The Z-saber bounces off of it, but that doesn't stop you. You keep slashing away at Megaman's new shield, which seems to be giving way. Before long, you have him up against a wall. The shield drops as Megaman yells out "Snake mode, activate!"

You land a slash across Megaman's chest with your Z-saber. Electricity floats through the air and wires are wide open for you to see. But as your blade goes through him, snakes shoot out of his arm cannon and he drops down, sliding between your legs to get behind you. The snakes bite down, attaching themselves to your limbs.

"Megabuster mode, activate!" You turn to see Megaman in his classic blue form, charging his arm-cannon which is pointed directly at you. You're close to him.

You see something strange in your field of vision. Some kind of graphical glitch. Maybe it's your visual processor?

You dash straight into him. He seems taken aback. While he does fire his cannon, it misses you and blows a hole in the wall of High Quality Robotics.

Tackling him to the ground, you find yourself in a mounted position. He seems defenseless against you. You're larger and stronger than him, and despite his struggle, he can't get out.

Then, the snakes fall off of you. You finally get a good look at them. Some kind of robot-snake. You're about to bring your Z-saber down into him when...

>ERROR
>ERROR CODE SWR-000-06P
>DIAGNOSTIC MODE FAILURE

You fall forward, rolling off of Megaman. Those snakes must have uploaded some kind of virus into your software!

"Item activate!" Megaman yells. You see him standing up. He thrusts his hand forward, a floating platform appearing in front of him. He jumps up onto it and places more, continuing upwards until he's on top of High Quality Robotics. He aims his arm-cannon down at you, charging a shot.

You start firing in rapid succession from the ground. A barrage of shots land on Megaman who stands there, tanking hits, while his arm cannon charges. After half a dozen hits land on him, he leaps down the side of the building. That catches you off-guard.

Several of your shots fly right over him on his way down, and he lets loose a megabuster fire. It's a huge blast, about the size of Megaman himself. You try to evade it, but get caught up in the blast as it touches down on the ground in front of you. It sends you soaring through the air, and while you land on your feet, you can feel some busted circuitry inside of you. It'll have to be repaired back home once you're done with this fight.

"You're pretty tough, Zero," Megaman says. "But you can't beat me. This is it, the attack that's going to finish this fight. Saturn mode, activate!"

Megaman raises his hands into the air. A black hole opens above his head. Rubble from around the area begins flying into its center. It looks like he's about to unleash something massive. You see a car that isn't being pulled in -- maybe you can use it for cover.

You run, fighting against the gravity, to take cover behind a car. And lucky you did.

Just as you reach your place of cover, the black hole above Megaman spews out the rubble. It's been condensed into tiny orbs of matter, far tougher than Megaman's uncharged blasts. The car is absolutely pelted, destroying it; the roof is torn off and goes flying over you, hitting a wall.

Megaman's color returns to blue and he drops to one knee, panting. "Did I do it?" He asks himself, looking over the area. He doesn't see you from your point of cover. "Dr. Light, come in. This is Megaman. I think I've beaten him, I'm not sure. I'm heavily damaged and I'm out of weapon energy. I don't think I can even pull off a charged shot right now. Isn't there an item cache you have stored somewhere near my location? ... Yeah, I can make it to the next alley. Built into the side of the dumpster? Thanks. Megaman out."

Megaman again begins limping away. He's obviously weak. You reach out and pick up your Z-saber, lodged in the ground from the shock of the megabuster. Even moving slowly, you're able to outpace Megaman. As he's bent over, removing a panel from the side of a dumpster, he stop cold.

Megaman looks down and sees the Z-saber sticking through his body. You've plunged it deep through his back.

"W-w-w-what-at-at? But you-ou-ou were de-de-dead-d-d-d," he stammers, the light fading from his eyes. He shakes as you raise the Z-saber up, slicing right through the upper half of his torso diagonally, and then strike down, cleaving Megaman in half.

You remove Megaman's helmet and press a button on the back of his head. A computer chip comes out -- the memory card which holds the data you need, according to your internal scanners. You place it in a chip slot in the side of your head.

>Z-BUSTER UPGRADED: CHARGED SHOTS NOW POSSIBLE

You reach down into the items cache Megaman was looking for and find a healing capsule. Taking it, you feel yourself restored. "Good as new", you say to yourself.

"Dr. Thomas Light, I presume," you say into the speaker.

"What? Who is this? Where is Megaman?"

"I am Zero. Megaman is dead."

"What!? Dead!?"

"Of course. He was pitifully weak. Beating him was child's play. I assumed that his inventor was a senile old fool, and you've yet to prove me wrong."

"Zero! You'll pay for this!"

"Perhaps. But first I need to kill a few more of your beloved children. Ta-ta for now, Tommy boy. We'll meet soon enough."

You drop the helmet to the floor, crush it under your foot, and activate the escape function in your system, teleporting back to Wily's lab.

"Computer, locate Rush."

"User confirmed. Calculating... Calculating... location confirmed. Rush is located in a forest 20 miles South of this location. Updating your information database. Would you like to teleport to the nearest beam location?"

"Computer, activate beam in."

"Confirmed. Good luck, Zero."

You beam into a large forest. In the distance, you can see a mountaintop with Wily's castle on its peak. Your sensors show you that Rush is located a mile deep into the forest.

From a nearby tree, a spider-bot slides down on a synthweb. You recognize it from your information database -- this must be a Wily bot, but a primitive one. Nothing more than a non-sentient defense system, apparently still active.

The spider-bot aims its head-blaster at you and shoots two blaster bolts. You decide it's a good time to test out your new charge shot technique. Aiming at the beast, you charge up a shot and let it go.

The blast blows straight through the spider-bot and blasts a hole through the tree it was attached to. The top section of the tree crumbles and falls to the ground before you. It looks like your charged shot is more powerful than the one Megaman used.

But there's no time to celebrate. The noise awakens spider-bots scattered within all the trees on the way to Rush. At least a dozen of them come down from the treetops on the path before you, searching for a target to aim at. Looks like you're just outside of their sensors.

You easily pick off the robo-spiders from out of range. They must have been set up by your father to keep out pests like wild cats and rats.

The forest is relatively peaceful. You walk down the path for a few minutes without running into anything threatening. Then, as your sensors register Rush as being half a mile away, you see some strange robots on the ground. They seem like construction hats.

Ah, you recognize them. Mets. They're among your father's least powerful, but most sturdy creations. One of them peeks out from under their hard hat and spits a blast at you. It's slow and easy to dodge. You return fire, but it ducks back down under the hard hat and your shot bounces off.

These mets could take some time if you want to destroy them. Three of them take up space on the path in front of you.

>Casually walk past the mets.
>Wait for them to peek out and destroy them one-by-one.
>Walk into the pathless forested area to avoid them, then get back on the path.

You decide to stray off of the path and into the woods to avoid the mets. No need to destroy those robots; they're a testament to the durability of your father's robots.

While walking, you see something gleaming on a tree branch. Out of curiosity you check it out... another sub tank! You load it into your system. You surely wouldn't have found this if you stayed on the path.

You have enough room in your system for 2 more sub tanks. Better look out for them in the future.

Returning to the path, you find yourself only a quarter mile away from Rush. But the path has come to the end. He's got to be out in the woods beyond you.

You climb up a tree. The wall-climbing system built into your body makes it easy work; you've been built to climb up slick walls, and something like a tree is no problem.

Slowly, you make your way across the canopy. After only a few minutes of walking, you see him.

Chasing a blue robo-bird is Rush, Megaman's iconic dog. He happily barks and runs around. Your sensors indicate that the bird has a name: Beat.

Well... neither of them looks very powerful, but it's not likely that you'll be able to download the data from Rush without taking out this bird, too.

You leap down from the canopy. Leaves fall to the ground around you. As you fall, you bring your Z-saber down hard on Rush.

A howl is heard throughout the forest. Your Z-saber stuck directly into Rush's back, pinning him down to the ground. He howls and whines, but can't move. As he tries, he tears more of his chassis and whimpers.

Beat, now alert, flies towards you and grabs the Z-saber, bringing it up into the air and out of Rush's body. He struggles to keep hold of the Z-saber and ends up tossing it aside, the weapon sticking into the tree you jumped from.

Rush growls at you and gets ready to leap into action.

You start charging your Z-buster, since your Z-saber is out of reach. Backing up puts you just outside of Rush's range -- or so you think. Mid-air, a burst of energy comes from Rush which sends him flying into a second jump. He scrapes his claws across your chest armor, and you stumble back. Before you can get your footing, though, Beat flies down and knocks you back even further.

Neither of them is doing significant damage to you, but it's hard for you to get your footing. After you do get your footing, you see Rush getting ready to jump at you again. Your charged shot is ready.

Your charged shot severely damages Beat, who gets knocked from the air and falls to the ground. His entire body is covered with a massive scorch mark, and it looks like his jaw mechanism is broken.

Rush wastes no time. As the shot leaves your Z-buster, he tackles you again, doing his double jump in the middle of the tackle, which sends you hurdling backwards. You crash into a tree, then drop to the ground. As you stand, you see Rush is dashing over to Beat's side.

Are they going to try to run away?

(Wow, every roll in this thread has been 1.)

You fire a volley of shots at Rush and Beat, standing your ground at the tree. Rush has his back turned to you and is investigating Beat. Beat, on the ground, sees your shots coming and thrusts himself past Rush, forward in the air, taking the volley of Z-buster shots and sacrificing himself for Rush's sake.

As Beat falls to the ground, his armor breaks apart. Mechanical pieces fall all over the forest floor. Rush's ears drop and he starts growling at you.

Then his body starts changing. His back paws retract into his legs and become rockets; his head dips down and become level with his front paws. This is Rush Jet.

Rush's back rockets activate. He's heading straight forward, aiming to impale you on the tree.

>Fire a volley of shots at Rush Jet -- try to take him down before he gets to you
>Start charging a shot, aiming to dodge him and shoot as soon as he hits the tree
>Commit to dodging

Rush fires up his jets to maximum power, aiming to impale you on the tree -- but you dodge. Stepping to the side, you allow Rush to fly face-first into the tree he intended to impale you on.

The impact is massive, and Rush is dazed. He falls to the ground, whining, returning to his neutral dog form. As he sits, dazed, you see that the tree can't withstand the shock it just took. It starts falling down.

Luckily, you decided to stay light on your feet. The tree falls, smashing down onto Rush. Too dazed to move, Rush takes the full force of the tree's fall. Its weight is too much for him; Rush is crushed, his head skipping across the ground and landing at your feet.

You bend down and extract his memory chip, loading it into your chip slot as you retrieve your Z-saber across the field.

You walk over to the fridge and open it.
Energy tanks. Everywhere. So many energy tanks. You've never seen so many energy tanks in one place. Looking on the door, you see... a sub tank!

Weird. Maybe they use it for seasoning or something. Though it would be a waste of a tank to crack it open instead of installing it for recharging, some robots are into drinking energy raw. Maybe a birthday present or something?

Anyway, that's one more sub tank! You have space for 1 more.

As you finish installing the sub tank, you hear a crash. You turn and see Roll, standing in the next room, having dropped a plate.

You assess the house structure using the scanner built into your optical unit. With great accuracy, you walk to a wall and swipe your Z-saber across the wall, splitting a structural beam; you fire three shots into the ceiling of each room, splitting more beams; you walk to a corner and give it a quick stab, splitting the wood in that corner; and then you walk out of the house, aim your Z-buster at another corner, and fire a fully charged shot. The house caves in on itself.

In the midst of the rubble, you find Roll's body. Pressing a button, you receive her memory chip and load it into your system.

You're surrounded by light for a moment. When the light fades, you're in a well-lit metallic hallway surrounded by glass windows that look out into the ocean.

"Beautiful, isn't it? Nice and peaceful, full of life. The wildlife can carry on without a care in the world. No crime, no mad scientists scheming to take over the world. No problems..."

Protoman turns back to look at you, letting his shield come down.

"... Until you came along."

Protoman walks to the center of the room, casually whistling a blues tune.

You run up to Protoman and bring your Z-saber down on his shield. It reminds you of when you were fighting Megaman, with two major differences: Protoman's shield isn't made of energy, and it isn't on a ticking timer.

With all of his might, Protoman thrusts his shield into your Z-saber as you bring it down. Then it happens: the handle of Protoman's shield snaps right off of its face. Both the saber and the shield go flying in different directions.

The saber hits one of the glass windows, causing another crack, while the shield skids across the floor. The water isn't overwhelming yet, but there is about a millimeter accumulated on the ground.

"You underestimate my power."

You open fire with your Z-buster. It looks like he expected you to attack with your Z-saber after picking it up, and he's once again taken aback.

The shots land across his lower body -- some on his hips, some on his legs, causing Protoman to slip and fall backwards -- the shield pushed from under his foot now floating on the water that is steadily rising in the room.

Protoman is on his back, scooting backwards. It looks like he's having trouble using the leg that took the majority of the damage.

"Dirty trick, Wily bot," he spits out at you. "Couldn't face me with honor? Should've known better than to expect that from you."

The water in the room is up to your knees by the time he finishes his statement.

"Honor? You're the one who's been hiding behind a shield this entire time... Which I suppose, means that I should get a turn now."

"You may kill me, Wily bot, but you'll never get to Dr. Light. I bet he's got an army waiting for you."

"Then I'll kill an army."

You pick up the shield. Without its handle, you have an awkward time holding it -- you have to grasp it by the side -- but it serves its purpose well enough. With your free hand, you take aim with your Z-buster and rapidly fire on him. Without his shield, without the ability to stand, and without a clear shot on you, Protoman is defenseless. You quickly end him with rapid Z-buster shots as the water reaches the top stair.

You walk over to his body and retrieve his memory chip, then load it into your chip slot.

You then teleport back to Dr. Wily's lab.

>Bass and Treble

As you return to Wily's lab, you find yourself immediately under attack. A volley of three blaster shots hit you directly in the chest and you drop Protoman's shield to the floor in pain.

"So you're my younger brother?"

Bass, combined with Treble, floats in the air in front of you. His blaster is aimed directly at you.

"Pathetic. To think good Bassnium was wasted constructing a heap like you. I've reviewed the video that the old man left for you, SWR-000. I know what you've been up to."

Bass lands on the ground, purple energy flowing from him and impacting the tech all around you. The computer, your pod, and various tools burst into smoke. The shield goes flying off to a corner. An alarm blares through the lab and the sprinkler system activates.

Bass begins lifting off into the air again.

"Looks like someone's afraid of being forgotten," you say, double jumping into the air and bringing your Z-saber down on his wing.

Bass falls to the ground and immediately dashes away from you, Treble splitting off of him. Treble roars at you, standing between you and Bass, ready to tear you to shreds. The robotic wolf is much larger than Rush, and much more ferocious looking.

"Me? Forgotten? You're naive. I am the greatest robot ever created. Treble, kill him!" Bass yells out.

As Treble leaps at you, Bass seems to be looking for something in the lab.

You start charging a shot, dash under Treble, then grab him by the tail, throwing him at Bass. While you're throwing Treble, Bass hits you with another 3 shots from his arm-cannon.

You respond by shooting your charged shot at both of them as Treble hits Bass. Bass looks furious.

"Treble, now!" He raises a purple energy capsule above his head. Your sensors recognize it as evil energy -- something which was supposed to have been taken off of the planet years ago. Apparently Wily had one capsule left.

Treble and Bass combine and the two rise into the air, a thick purple energy surrounding both of them.

You fire a volley of shots at Bass. They look like they're doing much less damage to him. He takes aim at you while you dash away. A huge volley of shots comes at you; while you're mobile, only a few of them come through and hit you, but they hit harder than you expected.

By the time you've finished dashing back, you see the shield next to you. It may be your only hope to survive another volley. Or maybe you could avoid it.

>Hide behind the shield and use a sub tank to heal.
>Climb the wall and fire more shots at Bass.
>Dash towards Bass to attack with your Z-saber; he clearly has the advantage at ranged combat.

You leap down and use the shield for cover. A massive array of blasts hits the shield. Surprisingly, it holds up -- but it's all dented up now. No way is it going to survive another couple of waves.

The sub tank heals you up good. You feel totally healthy again. Using your shoulder as a counterbalance, you grab one side of the shield and rush forward, dash into a jumping dash and follow it with a second jump.

You make contact, the shield bashing Bass in the head. As it does, you force it down and slash with your Z-saber, cutting into him as you fall to the ground next to the shield.

A white light flashes and Bass flies across the room to where you picked up the shield. He's way faster than you would've thought. Another wave of blasts comes at you.

You duck under the shield and charge up a shot. Another volley strikes the shield hard; part of the top breaks off. It won't take another volley after that. You throw the shield at Bass, then shoot it; it flies directly into his body.

As it flies through the air, you chain together dashes and jump dashes to go as fast as you possibly can. When the shield makes contact, you perform a dashing double jump, delivering an upward slash with your Z-saber.

Bass and Treble's fusion breaks apart, both of them falling to the ground. They both look dead to you. You lean down and download Treble's data.

As you finish downloading the data, you feel a strike on your back. Turning, you see that Bass is barely clinging to life. He's been cleaved in half.

"I-impossible. H-how could a ch-cheap knockoff possibly-y-y defeat me?" Bass laughs, coughing up oil. "Guess the old man had a few tricks-icks-icks up his sleeve."

"Those your last words, big brother?" You ask, readying your Z-saber.

"No. Computer!"

"Emergency systems activated." The computer chimes in. It wasn't completely destroyed after all.

"Activate code W-MM-X."

"Self-destruct sequence activated. The laboratory will be destroyed in 60 seconds."

You slash Bass's body, ending his life. He dies with a smile on his face. With no time to spare, you download Bass's data.

"45... 44..."

"Yes! Get me out of here now!"

"Confirmed. 15. Good luck, Zero. 10... 9..."

White light surrounds you.
