/qst/ - Quests

Welcome to a Quest based on Kamen Rider Ryuki. I’m a fan of the series and watched it while it was airing dubbed as a kid, but never got all the way to the ending. As such, please don’t mind the inaccuracies. I’m mainly using the setting and theme of Mirror Monsters, Advent Decks, and general Tokusatsu themes, rather than following the show’s plot strictly.

Before we get further in, though, let’s start with character creation.

You are (Write-in), a (Man/Woman) living in Kestrel City. A week ago, your life started getting weird. Over the past few months, the City has been experiencing mysterious disappearances and attacks on citizens, at no particular time of the day. They’ve been increasing in frequency. And you’ve been starting to see strange shapes and figures out of the corner of your eye.

You’ve kept it to yourself, going about your day and quietly working at the (Write-in), but things are about to change. Fate has its eyes on you, and without knowing it, you’ve already become tangled in its web.

You are Mitsuko da Silva. Lately, while on your way back from your job at the Tidal Wave Coffeeshop, you’ve felt like someone has been following you. You’ve gotten suspicious that you’re being stalked, so you’ve been carrying a piddly pocketknife with you.

Exam season is coming up, but you’ve found focusing on your studies difficult when the city is getting more and more unsafe. Someone in your lecture hall has even gone missing lately.

> Stats

Stats:

Stat contests against others will involve rolling D100s against them. You can roll 1 more dice for each number in a stat. For tasks that don’t involve conflict with a statted opponent, you’ll have to meet a set DC.

Dice will be rolled from a pool. If you get 10 dice to roll, for example, I’ll accept the first 10 rolls I see in the thread.

The stats for your Rider Persona and yourself are different, as one is about combat specs, and the other is about how you can carry yourself in day to day life.

Stats:

Persuasion: (Convincing people of things in situations where they’re unlikely to believe you. E.G, trying to convince a skeptic that you’re telling the truth about something.)

Deception: (Outright lies, subterfuge and gaslighting.)

Tech: (Technical and mechanical aptitude. Cars, devices, electronics.)

Knowledge: (Trivia and information that might come in handy. You might just so happen to know exactly what to do in a situation, due to having read about it. Maybe you remember how to find north when you’re lost in the woods, or maybe you remember the streets you’re on because you spent a lot of time here as a kid.)

Street Smarts: (How you carry yourself in public, and your instincts when it comes to dealing with the rougher side of Kestrel City)

Physical: (Sports, endurance, etc. Making this high doesn’t make you a juggernaut, that’s the point of Rider Stat strength. This is about your physique in daily life. Do you do sports? Go jogging regularly despite your busy schedule?)

You start out with a couple of default stats because of your chosen job as a waitress and a bonus for being a Bio student. You may still allocate more.

Let’s begin, then!

Wednesday Morning is when something rather odd happens. You open your dorm room door at Kestrel Heights University, and find yourself staring at a strange object on the floor. It’s wrapped in cellophane, and you initially think it’s some stupid Fraternity prank or a misplaced toy. On a tingling impulse, you decide to unwrap it.

Within is a square object, looking like some kind of card deck. It’s made of a rigid material; neither metal nor plastic. Try as you might, you can’t seem to pull any cards from it. You shrug and resolve to turn it in to lost and found later on.

However, your day is rough. You’re bombarded with an array of slides and topics the whole day, and you have a hard time understanding this specific one. You’re almost late to work too, and coupled with your bus running late, you’re unable to even consider making a detour and handing the stupid card deck in to the Student Services office.

Work is relaxing, fortunately. You’re on the afternoon shift, and you genuinely enjoy the place. So you have no complaints. Once evening hits, you make your exit and head home.

You’re unsure whether it’s the lack of sleep, stress from school, or something else. But lately, those flashes and figures have been becoming more clear. You see them most often at twilight, in shiny metal surfaces and glass windows. You’ve ignored them from the most part, but have resolved to keep quiet and only bring it up the next time you visit a doctor. Telling anyone that you’re seeing mystery figures in mirrors is a surefire way to get odd looks.

So when you watch a woman get pulled into a glass window right in front of you, you’re a little skeptical at first. Once you rub your eyes, you realize that her shoe and handbag are still on the ground, meaning that there’s no way you hallucinated her entire existence.

The rest of the street is rather empty, and the few people passing by are facing other directions. You’re the only one who spotted it.

Action:

> Head closer to investigate her belongings.
> Examine the glass window and see what’s going on with it.
> Leave and go home. You’ve got class early tomorrow.
> Call your work colleague.

You decide to cautiously approach the window. Your belongings rattle in your backpack as you step towards it, looking for any sign of something going wrong. It’s a storefront of a florist’s, and it’s already closed for the day. You clearly saw her get pulled into the glass, yet it’s intact, and nothing is off on the other sight. You just see your own reflection, rippling oddly in the evening light.

The more you focus on the mirror, the more violently it churns. It moves like a ripple, as though a rock has been dropped into the placid surface of a pond. Your hand sits in the pocket of your track pants, gripping the knife and preparing to unfold it.

You’re a fairly methodical person. You know not to stick your head out of car windows or poke hornet nests. And so, you decide to treat this otherworldly occurrence with an air of caution. Not enough caution to leave without learning more, though.

You pick up one of the black heels. It feels solid in your hands, and is very clearly a real object. As soon as you touch it to the surface of the mirror, it gets pulled into the ripping mass of glass. The shoe is sucked out of your hand and lost in the strange surface.

You walk around and peek past the glass, trying to catch it an an angle where it’s transparent instead of reflective. You can see the other side; a normal flowershop, with no shoe or woman lying on the other end of the glass.

What do you do?
> Examine her handbag.
> Touch the mirror yourself.

Calling in a work colleague. I set it as a separate option from examining the handbag, since each action progresses time somewhat and will affect things for this encounter. But investigating while waiting for the colleague is fine since it's in the waiting timeframe.

You decide to pluck your phone from your pocket. It's an Android phone, filled with all sorts of utility apps and covered in a sturdy case. You decide to dial your colleagues, hoping that they haven't gone too far in the meantime. There's only a handful you're close enough to contact. The manager, Mr. Bannon, is still busy at work. There's Sandra, who's around your age and one of the cashiers, and lastly, Rico, the kitchen helper. You think about it for a moment and decide to give Rico a call. He's got a motor-scooter, so he can make it here pretty fast.

Ring... Ring...

"Y'ello! Rico Ricardo, at your service, what can I getcha?"

"Hey. Rico, it's me, Mitsuko."

"Sukey! What's up, girl?"

"There's uh... Something I need help with. It's easier to explain in person. Are you still within driving distance of the cafe?"

"Of course. Is it bad? You in trouble?"

You take a moment to reassure him, before giving Rico your location. He starts up his bike, and you can hear the engine revving as he turns around and heads back towards you.

"Five minutes top, stay put."

And with that, he hangs up. Rico is a pretty nice guy. He's around your age, and is training to be a pastry chef. He's helping out in the kitchen to gain experience. You've never had any issues with him, and he's friendly and excitable, like a puppy. He can be a bit naive, though. He turned around to come help without much detail.

While waiting, you decide to back away from the window and lift up the lady's handbag. A quick inspection reveals her ID card. Jane Doe, 29. She looks like an office lady. Her handbag is filled with everything you'd expect. Lipstick, a pocket mirror, tissues, her wallet, etc. The mirror's rippling gets weaker and weaker. It looks like it's about to stop moving soon.

What do you do?

> Touch the mirror.
> Back away and wait for Rico.
> Call the police.
> Go home (Cancel on Rico or just leave)
> Dig through her handbag and wallet for valuables.
>>
>>4819112
> Back away and wait for Rico.

A bit of metagaming, but since we don't have a deck it's pointless to go investigating the Mirror World too in-depth yet anyway. All that would result in is us getting eaten. Let's just wait for Rico to arrive so we can explain what happened, and if the physical evidence of weirdness has vanished by then that's just something we'll have to deal with.

You watch the mirror continue to shake and shimmer, careful not to get too close. Whatever is happening, it's clearly supernatural, so you don't want to just start messing with it without backup. After a minute or two, the rippling stops. The mirror becomes a placid glass surface once again, and all you can see is your reflection in the evening light. The sound of an engine breaks your stupor.

Rico rolls up on his scooter. He plucks his helmet off, revealing his shaggy blonde hair. Tucking the helmet under his arm, he heads over with a friendly wave.

"Sukey! Everything okay? You look like you've seen a ghost."

Upon seeing your stoic expression, though, he gets a bit more serious. The smile fades off his face too.

"Hey. You okay?"

> "... No. Can you drive me home?" (Leave the scene without elaborating)
> "I am. But there's someone who isn't." (Attempt to explain the situation to him. Will require a Persuasion roll.)
> "There's something really wrong here..." (Explain the situation, but spin it so that it's a mundane lie instead of telling him about the weird magic mirror. Will require a Deception roll.)

It should be fine so long as we focus on what we saw and don't go making any suppositions of what caused it. Just say that we saw this woman get grabbed by something, when we went to look there was something weird with the glass, we don't know what's going on but we're worried for her.

By default, you roll 3d100 dice for an action and take the best of the rolls. I'll take the first 3 dice to be rolled, so either roll all 3 or save some for others to do. You get 1 extra dice per rank in a skill.

Roll 6d100 to convince Rico of the truth.

Rico isn’t very hard to convince of things, and he’s fond enough of you to believe you by default. After a brief explanation of the situation, he stands a safe distance away from the mirror and examines the handbag while thinking out loud.

“So... If she really went in there, where could she have ended up after?”

“I don’t know. I saw something reach out and yank her, but I couldn’t tell if it was a person or not...”

He needs your warning to not touch the mirror. Neither of you have the desire to get sucked in after the missing woman. Its been close to fifteen minutes since she first vanished. There’s no evidence of any supernatural occurrence left behind, save for your eyewitness report.

“Hey, Sukey, what do we do now? It’s not that I don’t believe you. But the police definitely won’t. What can we even do from here?”

“Yeah. This isn’t exactly an everyday occurrence.”

> Bring her belongings to the police station and report the strange incident.
> Bring her belongings to the police station but don’t mention seeing her.
> Hang around the mirror and wait, while talking to Rico about the weird events happening lately.
> Leave the situation be. Put her stuff back on the floor and either head home, or get a ride from Rico.

"I guess we... Turn it in to the cops?" He asks. You think about it for a moment, before nodding and scooping up her belongings. Your heart sinks as you imagine the fate of this poor woman. Something tells you that she's not going to be found. The police aren't exactly specialised in supernatural abductions.

"... Yeah. Can we go to the station?"

He nods and hands you a spare helmet. The two of you ride in silence towards the nearest Station. You're a lot more affected by this than he is, and your gloominess is infectious. Once you reach there, you hand it over to the deskman and give a rather mundane report:

You found an abandoned shoe and her handbag scattered on an isolated road. With all the disappearances lately, you're suspicious that something happened, and you brought it here since it'd be a bit odd to call 911 over a dropped handbag.

The deskman seems appreciative of it, and solemnly files the report. By the time you guys are done, it's close to 8pm. You ought to have gotten home quite a while ago, and you've got classes tomorrow.

What do you do?

> Head home and try to get some relaxation in for the night.
> Snoop around the station to try and figure out what they'll do about the case.
> Hang out with Rico for a bit.
> Return to the Florist's shop to stare at the magic glass window again.

You turn towards the door, preparing to leave. Before you can exit, you feel the weight in your chest grow heavier. You don't think you'll be able to sleep tonight without knowing what's being done about this, even if you have no connection to this Jane Doe. Rico waits by the open door for a bit, holding it open as he exits, before realising that you haven't followed along.

"Hey. Sukey?"

You head back to the desk, staring at the deskman. He looks up at you, drumming his fingers against the countertop steadily.

"Can I help you. Miss..." He checks the statement you wrote. "de Silva?"

"I was just wondering... What's being done about all this? More and more people have been vanishing in the city, and there hasn't been any word from the police. I wanna know what's going to be done about the lady whose stuff we found."

"Ah. Well, we'll contact her family and ask if she's home yet. And if not, we'll facilitate a missing persons report."

That seems like a mundane answer. Just the standard protocol. But you have doubts about how effective it will be.

> Accept the answer and head out.

You decide that there’s nothing else to be done, and you don’t want to spend your night bugging police officers for info. With a sigh, you turn around and follow Rico to the exit. Along the way, you turn around and look back at the desk. Another officer has come out to speak to the deskman. He has a loose overcoat, fitting his large frame, and harsh lines on his face. The first cop points to you as you exit, saying something to him. For a moment, he catches your gaze and the two of you stare at each other from across the parking lot. Before long, he looks away and vanishes back into the station.

You turn your attention back to the bike, nearly missing the flicker of motion you see in a nearby car mirror. It vanishes before you can get a good look, but you know that it’s the same sort of thing you’ve been seeing for weeks. This one is much closer, though.

“Rough night, huh? I’ll get you home. You gonna be okay?” Rico asks, revving his bike with a smile. You nod and get into the backseat, fastening your helmet and preparing to go.

The trip home is an uneventful one. You’re dropped off in front of your dorm, and you head in for the night. You’re not in the mood for takeout, so you just make yourself some instant ramen and pour it into a bowl, cracking an egg into the boiling water afterwards. You stir it idly, thinking on the day’s events.

The weird card deck was pushed to the back of your mind by the disappearance. But as you dig through your bag, you spot it, and remember once again that you ought to turn it in to lost and found.

You’ll do it in the morning, then. It’s too late now. For some reason, you feel compelled to leave it within reach as you sleep. You set the deck on your bedside and drift off.

-

You’re woken by a blaring alarm, as you are every morning. You groan, trying your best to ignore it and get five more minutes of sleep. But the clock’s screech is piercing. After a few moments, you’re forced to stand up and head across the room to shut it off. You stand there in your pajamas, still unsettled from last night.

You're in no mood for class. You stop yourself as you head for the door, books and laptop tucked under your arm. Whatever is going on, curiosity, or some other driving force is telling you to not bother with lectures today. You doubt that you could focus anyway. You dump your stuff and grab a smaller bag instead. On an impulse, you snatch the deck up and stuff it at the bottom of your backpack. In bright daylight, you feel fine walking over there, so you spend the morning heading to the Florist.

Once you reach, however, you're sorely disappointed by the lack of anybody there. No police officers are wandering around to investigate, and the shop is even open. A couple of staff are inside, arranging their bouquets and watering the plants. Maybe the police already came and went, but you doubt it.

You look at the glass storefront that the woman vanished into. For a moment, you think you see a flicker of motion yet again.

You approach the reflective glass and stare at it. The staff spot you and wave through the glass, giving friendly smiles. But you don't notice. You're occupied with walking back and forth, trying to see if the surface moves or does anything odd like yesterday. You're one step short from touching it when you spot that same flicker of motion again.

You immediately stop and turn around, checking behind you. Nothing. Nothing at all in real life. But you've seen it enough to know that it's the same thing. Some kind of shiny, almost metallic shape. Just bits and pieces of it. It doesn't seem to be a human. Some kind of creature, maybe? And if the same thing has been visible to you all this time, it definitely doesn't spell anything good for you. You gulp and back away from the mirror, trying to think of what to do next.

A voice breaks you out of your stupor, however. It comes from directly behind you, startling you and causing you to flinch. Your bag almost feels heavier all of a sudden.

"Now, what would you be doing hanging around here, after calling in a missing person?"

You whirl around, spotting the man from last night. He has a stern look etched onto his face, and stubble lines his cheeks. He's still in one of those large coats, and a briefcase hangs loosely from his arm. The man folds his arms to regard you, glancing at the mirror as well.

"You're the one who called it in, yes? And now you're back here."

The man doesn't buy it. He makes that very clear in his body language. He steps back to examine you from head to toe. It's a cold, clinical look, as though he's assessing just how much of a threat you could be. The answer turns out to be: Not much. "Right. I'm investigating now. I don't know whether you're here out of morbid curiosity, or if I give you the benefit of the doubt, actual concern for poor Mrs. Jane Doe. But you should leave. In the worst-case scenario, you don't want to get wrapped up in this, I assure you."

As you open your mouth to give some kind of retort, the mirror shifts again. You see that flicker of movement dart past. You turn your whole head to observe it, trying to catch a glimpse of it. As it vanishes from sight, however, you notice that the Detective has had the exact same reaction. You've both noticed whatever it is.

His head snaps towards you afterwards, glaring at you with a hard, suspicious expression.

Action:

Sure would be weird for this detective if he sees us get grabbed by a mirror monster, huh?

You turn away from him and approach the mirror once more. The pocketknife sits in your pocket, firmly in your grip. You're a bit hesitant to pull it out in front of a police officer, in case of any misunderstandings, but you're not letting it go either. The man attempts to stop you, quickly stepping closer and holding a hand out. His tone is filled with urgency, a far cry from the clinical suspicion he was addressing you with earlier. His composure seems to have broken almost immediately.

"Hey! Lady. I don't know how to say this, but don't go any closer. Step away from the-"

As you turn to look at him, the surface of the glass ripples and warps, before deforming outwards. Your breathing is cut off as something grabs you by the throat. It's sudden and violent, with no hesitation whatsoever. The next moment, your feet leave the ground as the entity yanks you straight into the reflective window. You go sailing towards the emblazoned sign: 'FLORIST'.

You're aware of the fact that the woman was pulled through. But in the heat of the moment, you tense up and prepare for the shock of being smashed through a glass window. Rather than the sound of shattering glass and screaming, your ears fill with a loud, high-pitched whine, almost drowning out your own shouts. When it stops, you're thrown roughly to the ground. You groan and try to push yourself away, feeling your bruised throat. Somehow, you've ended up back on the street. It feels... Different, somehow. Something is abjectly wrong. The detective is missing, and so are the staff inside the...TƧIЯO⅃ꟻ?

It's backwards. The street, the sign, everything you saw before has been reversed. It's like staring into a mirror image. You raise your right hand, and see your left waving about in your field of vision. The entire thing is incredibly disorienting. Your senses are out of alignment, and you feel nauseous all of a sudden. This is wrong.

Your backpack seems to be buzzing hard. It's certainly not your phone, which was on vibrate, but you don't have the time to investigate. Especially not when you hear a ear-splitting roar.

Standing in front of you is a towering creature that dwarfs you in size. It looks almost like a robot, with shiny metal plates and lights for eyes. There's unmistakable intelligence behind its gaze, and the same can be said for its hostility.

The creature resembles a monstrous:

> Beetle
> Shark

Here we go. This vote is important, and will have a permanent impact on the rest of this quest. Picking this Mirror Monster will affect your default kit and theme, so choose wisely.

It would probably end up with themes that are a bit stereotypically, all poise and elegance with a stabbing weapon. But I still think it should be cool. Crane beak spear or rapier weapon, crane wing shields, should be neat. Plus, I feel like a wading bird actually makes intuitive sense as a Mirror Monster, it's a creature that waits by the water and pucks prey out of it. That's just good thematic similarities.

The thing that stands before you looks like some kind of large, white bird. Despite its wiry frame, it’s imposing and menacing. Sleek metal wings glide soundlessly, spreading outwards as the creature tilts its head to regard you.

The Monster stands on one leg, with its other one curling up and poised to strike. It ends in wicked-looking metal claws. You only have a second of warning before its head darts forward to impale you.

You turn around to run, feeling the beak jab at your back. Fortunately, it doesn’t hurt you. All it manages to do is shred one of the straps of your buzzing backpack. You tumble forward from the force, struggling to get back on your feet. Every motion is difficult, and you still struggle to get your arms and legs moving where you want them to. You find that closing your eyes makes it better.

The Crane-beast closes in on you again. You lift your backpack so that you at least have a shield against it. The deadly beak descends over and over, jabbing holes into your backpack and causing your belongings to spill out. After a couple of strikes, however, it fails to make further progress. Something glows bright from inside the backpack, warding the thing off and causing it to pace menacingly in front of you. You desperately reach inside, feeling for the source of the intense light.

Your hands close around the card deck. You feel it resonating with you as you grip it, and you instantly know that this thing is important. When you raise it in front of you to maintain the barrier, you feel a weight on your hips. Some kind of belt has materialized, with a slot where the buckle would be. It’s the same size as the card deck.

Man, what the hell is going on?

The thing is a great deal more agile than you. But somehow, through a stroke of luck, you manage to avoid its thrusting beak and slip under its outspread wings. The Monster hops on one foot, quickly turning around to jab at you as you move past.

Your backpack abandoned, all you take with you is your phone and the card deck, clutched tight in your hand. You dive towards the glass, ignoring the basic human instinct that tells you not to leap at walls. Once again, you fall through into the swirling, screaming void that roars in your ears and blurs your vision.

You emerge from the mirror and tumble onto the floor, groaning in pain. You have the presence of mind to back away from it, panting as you clutch at your chest in terror. There’s no sign of the cop at all, and the two staff members inside the store look absolutely bewildered by this.

You’re safe for now, at least. But there’s no sign of the bird-thing or the man who was just here.

You’re starting to feel the stress of the situation. Is this how Jane Doe died? Eaten by some extradimensional bird?

You make sure to stay away from reach, ignoring the looks from the staff on the other side. Now that you’re out of the strange mirror world, your skin has stopped tingling, and the sense of foreboding has stopped. You can see the surface continuing to ripple, and when you focus, you can see the creature battling in the reflection behind you. The bird-like creature is brawling with a humanoid figure, dressed in some kind of black and brown armor.

You certainly didn’t see anyone like that inside the mirror. You must’ve missed them while you were in transit. The fight soon progresses to a point where they move out of frame. You can’t hear anything strange, and you step from side to side to try and get a proper view while keeping your body out of reach.

Eventually, the person walks back into frame, clutching their head. They pause in front of the mirror, staring out at you and clearly seeing you from beyond.

You’re in the real world. Whatever this is is going to have to reach through the mirror to touch you. As long as you stay out of reach, it should be fine, right? A stare-down ensues, where you examine the figure and it does the same to you in turn.

They’re about six feet tall, and have a black bodysuit covering their entire body. You can’t make out the fine details through the window, as it’s not a perfectly reflective surface, but you can see enough. Their legs, chest and arms have plates of armor on them, colored black and tan. The helmet has two pointed spikes on either side, that extend upwards like ears. They have a silver visor comprised of horizontal lines, with no face visible underneath. Overall, it has a vaguely canine look.

You glance down and notice that it’s wearing a belt as well. The same kind that appeared on you inside the mirror, and is now absent.

Before you can continue looking, the figure breaks eye contact. They sprint out of frame again, vanishing down the street and leaving the view of the mirror. You managed to get a good long look at them, at least.

You’re alone on the street now. The staff of the Florist seems like they’re about to come out and speak with you. Still no sign of the cops, and your backpack is lost within the mirror world.

This is the second time you’re entering the strange world on the other side of the mirror. You touch it and feel your hand slipping through. You wonder how weird this must look to the florists, as they watch you phase through the glass and vanish in front of them again. The high-pitched whine fills your ears, and you’re sent back into the reversed street.

Instantly, your body is wracked with pain. You feel nausea overcome you, and your skin tingles and vibrates. It feels like you’re about to fall apart and disintegrate. It wasn’t so bad earlier, but now that you’ve returned unarmed, it’s like this realm is killing you. You’ve never experienced anything of the sort, but you imagine this is what dying from radiation might feel like.

No time to fuck around or examine the battle. You grab your tattered backpack, not stopping to scoop up any small objects that fall out of it, and drag it through the mirror. You cry out in pain as you fall through it. If you stayed for much longer, you might have been paralyzed by the sensation and unable to even crawl out to safety.

You collapse back in the real world. Standing over you is the detective, who’s also breathing heavily like he’s just run a marathon. He adjusts his sunglasses and steps back, waiting for you to speak first. He’s clearly seen you just fall through the mirror.

You take a moment to compose yourself, looking up at the guy and thinking of what to say. Despite your sorry state, he doesn’t reach a hand out to help you off the ground. When you struggle to your feet on your own, he backs off as though you’re dangerous.

“Were you the guy in there? I saw another person in there, but didn’t get the chance to see their face.”

He stares at you. You recognise the same posture, the same tilt of the head, the same cold disregard that the man in the mirror had while analyzing you. It’s rather clear to you that the two are one and the same.

The detective reaches into his pocket and produces a box of cigarettes. He holds it up to his lips, moments from lighting it, before something seems to stop him. He sighs, hesitantly stuffing the unlit stick back into the box.

“Let’s go for a walk, shall we?”

You walk with him, leaving the stunned Florists behind. Neither of you pay them any further regard, as you accept his invitation. You want answers, and he seems to have them. After a moment of struggling with the straps, you groan and carry your tattered backpack in your arms. You’ll have to get a new one.

“What was that thing? And where did it bring me?” You ask.

He continues walking. You’re headed nowhere in particular, as far as you can tell. Both of you are just heading down the street and speaking freely.

“Mirror Monsters. They live in the Mirror World. Uninspired name, I know. You’re lucky as hell to have survived as long as you did.”

You look down at your deck of cards, which is now sitting snugly in your pocket. It stopped vibrating once the Mirror Monster vanished. You pluck it out so the detective can see it.

“I wouldn’t have survived without this thing. It made some kind of barrier that kept the monster away. And it uh, made some kind of belt?”

He reaches out, as though about to seize your hand. You jerk it away, and he backs off placatingly.

“Sorry, sorry... Can’t be too careful.”

He examines your deck.

“... Blank, huh? I see...”

It seems like he knows quite a bit about these. It’s not a huge leap to assume that he was the armored figure who showed up to beat up the bird. But how did he change out of it so fast? You can only assume that the two of you jumped in and out of the window at different times, constantly missing each other like a Looney Tunes episode. You ask him as such.

He hesitates even longer, before he starts answering your barrage of questions.

“The lady? Gone. She’s been eaten by now. Humans can’t survive in the Mirror World for long either, so if she escaped, she’d still die from being inside. I thought you were about to disintegrate. Why in the hell did you jump back in there?”

You flush as he lectures you about it, comparing it to running into a burning building to save your phone. His tirade ends when you reiterate your question about the deck and armor.

“Look... I don’t know how much I should tell you. So I’ll cut you a deal. Right now, if you give me this deck and then forget about everything, I’ll explain it to you. You’ll hopefully never have to worry about it again. But if you’re going to keep it, things are going to change for you, and it’ll cause enough problems for me that I’d rather not tell you at all.”

You consider his offer for a moment. You want to be rid of this weird deck, and return to your normal life. But in the span of the last twenty four hours, you’ve just watched a woman get pulled into a Mirror World to be devoured, and nearly gotten killed yourself. If this deck kept you safe from the creature earlier, you don’t want to just give it up to some random detective. What if the monster comes back? What if you run into others like it again?

He sighs as you state your concerns and reject his offer. The man stops by an alleyway and turns to look at you.

“Alright. Then I’ll just give you a bit of advice, Miss da Silva. I won’t be considering you as a normal civilian from this point onwards. Make sure you put the deck on before you go traipsing into the Mirror World. And you’ll want to make a contract as soon as possible, so that the things that want to kill you won’t be able to do it so easily.”

Contracts? What the hell is he on about? You continue to ask, but he seems unwilling to answer any further questions. Is he really going to just leave you be like this?

The man turns away and begins walking.

“Detective Lestrade. You can find me at the station if you need anything urgent. But you’ve made your choice. Now that you’re going to be a Rider, you’re on your own for the most part. Our kind can’t play buddy buddy.”

And with that, he fucks off, leaving you almost as confused as you were in the first place. At least you have a bit more context now, but you also know that there’s a lot you’re unaware of. Contracts, Riders, the strange armor he was wearing. And the big mystery: The entire card deck that started this.

Mysterious mirror dimensions are great and all, but you’re still a struggling University student. You expect that you’ll have trouble concentrating, but you’ve already skipped your morning lessons. Even if your day is going to be unproductive, you need to make an effort if you want to keep your grades up.

You head home first to swap to your larger backpack, dumping the contents directly into the intact one. You stuff the deck in your pocket for easy access. After a quick lunch, you make it to class. You arrive in the lecture hall earlier than most others, and settle down in your usual seat. About ten minutes later, your friends show up.

You wouldn’t call them particularly close friends, just coursemates you chat with and hang out with due to proximity. There’s Remy, Sandra, Kaya, and Bernard.

Sandra is the first to spot you. She heads over, settling down next to you and giving you a look of concern.

“Mitsuko? Welcome back. You okay? You didn’t respond to any of our texts.”

You glance at your phone. In the hubbub of the morning, you’d forgotten to check it at all. You just had too much on your mind.

“Should’ve invited us if you were gonna skip class,” Remy jokes. You mumble a halfhearted excuse about a stomachs, eliciting a laugh from him. The four of them chatter away as usual. You’re not in the mood for the usual banter, however, and Kaya picks up on it after a while.

“... Something wrong, Mitsuko?”

You shake your head.

“Just tired, is all.”

The rest of the lecture passes painstakingly slowly. You can’t help but glance around the room, appreciating the lack of any big reflective surfaces. You’d hate to spot one of those Mirror Monsters again, now that you know they exist. As expected, you can’t quite grasp the lesson, and your thoughts are lingering elsewhere.

You consider taking some time to hang out with the group after class. But before you can pipe up and ask if they’re doing anything, you spot a telltale flicker of movement in the hallways.

Oh god.

You glance at the shiny trophy cabinet, spotting a familiar, angular shape dart out of view. It takes all your willpower to not scream on the spot.

Bernard turns towards you.

“Hey. We were thinking of hitting up that Korean Barbecue place at the mall? The new one. You up for-“

“I-I’m sorry. I have to go. Now.”

Your friends watch in confusion as you hurry off, urgently leaving the scene and ducking away from glass cases. You flinch and back away from a mirror by the base of the stairs, half-expecting to get jumped again.

You’re being hunted. That much is certain. It’s the same creature stalking you, now that you’ve gained its attention and discovered its existence.

Action:

You hurry out of the school, sighing in relief once you’re on the campus grounds. It’s wide and open, and you’d hardly expect to find a mirror in the middle of the lawn. You wander out onto it while you contemplate your next move, becoming increasingly paranoid.

Rico. He believed you yesterday. And unlike yesterday, you have actual quantifiable proof. You could show him the deck, jump into a mirror (if you dare to again), maybe even get a picture of the monster. You head towards the cafe.

It’s usually a fifteen minute walk from the uni, excluding the time it takes you to change into uniform. You sprint till you’re too tired to continue, and then alternate between jogging and walking. The Tidal Wave Cafe finally comes into sight. There’s plenty of reflective surfaces between you and the kitchen, and you expect that you’ll have to dodge through that minefield. A quick inspection of the outside reveals no monsters, so perhaps its lost your trail.

You burst into the kitchen, startling Rico as he gets a cake out of the oven. He nearly drops the whole thing, and manages to juggle it in his mitts until he can set it down on the countertop.

“Sukey! You alright?” He says, taking in your disheveled appearance. You quickly ask him to join you in the break room.

The break room can hardly be considered a recreational space. Mr. Bannock set it up for the staff to rest in while on breaks, but despite his good intentions, the room is rather pathetic. It’s a refurbished storage space with plain white walls, a couple couches, a foosball table, and a mini fridge. A row of lockers contains the staff’s uniforms, bags and clothing. Everyone usually prefers to just sit out in the cafe anyway, where it’s nice and relaxing.

Today, though, the dull room gets some use. There’s no reflective surfaces anywhere, and you can think of it as a secure bunker.

Now, you just need to figure out how much to tell Rico. You remember the detective’s warning. This is some sort of secret world you’ve stumbled upon, and he implied that there was an in-group aware of it. Would it be a good idea to bring Rico into it? On the other hand, you may not have a choice. He’s the most likely to believe you.

We already told him about the woman disappearing and the mirror rippling. And I'm not sure how knowing "by the way, reflective surfaces are portals to a dimension full of monsters" would make him less safe. At least he'll know to be careful around them. Worst case scenario, the knowledge makes him a target, but if we're a target then those close to us probably are by association, too.

You begin explaining everything to him. You start with the strange figures you’ve been seeing, which obviously weirds him out a bit. But your story is coherent, and you manage to not sound like a rambling madwoman. You tell him about the detective, how you were pulled into the Mirror, and how the monster grabbed you by the neck, with the bruises to show for it.

You end off by stating the importance of the deck, and how you feel like you’re being pursued by one of those monsters. Any time you walk in front of a mirror, you could be in danger.

“... Wow. That’s... A lot to take in, Sukey.”

He blinks and stares at the deck on the table, reaching a hand out for it.

“May I?”

He takes it and turns it over in his hands, examining the plastic object.

“Hey, you said that you couldn’t pull any cards from it, right?”

“Yeah.”

He gently tugs out a card, managing to get it out of the deck. Try as he might, though, he can’t squeeze anything else out of it. You stare at it in surprise. Something must’ve changed when the deck started buzzing and heating up earlier.

The card is blank, with the words ‘CONTRACT’ up top. There’s spaces where an image and text could go, but all the boxes are empty. You distinctly remember Lestrade using that word earlier. Rico continues to shake the deck, trying to get anything else out of it.

You pick the deck up and hold it in front of you.

“Okay. Rico, I’m about to try something. Don’t panic, okay?”

He nods as you get into the same position you were in before. As though sensing your intention, the familiar weight of the belt appears around your midsection. Rico’s eyes go wide as the object materializes out of nowhere.

You hold the blank deck in front of you and take a deep breath, before a whim comes over you.

“HENSHIN!”

You have no idea what that is, but you slide the deck into place. It plays an electronic noise, and your body explodes in a flash of light. Rico covers his eyes until it fades, and you can see his jaw drop open to gape at your new appearance.

You feel taller. Stronger. While you were at Rico’s chest before, you’re now taller than him, standing at almost 6 feet. You look down at your hands, seeing the plates of white armor covering them. Your feet are covered in boots that have a sandal-like pattern carved into the soles. When you focus hard on it, you can see that your vision is somewhat obscured by a visor, but when you relax, you’re able to see normally. Your hands rise to touch your face, feeling a solid helmet that you can’t seem to pull off.

“Holy shit!”

You would head for a mirror if you were willing to risk it. But you’re not confident in facing any more Mirror Monsters. Rico has the presence of mind to lock the door to the break room, so that nobody can walk in on you while you’re transformed.

“Wow. This... This is just like the guy I saw in the mirror. The Detective. He was in a suit like this, but black.”

Rico helps you take a picture of yourself, allowing you to observe your new body in full. It’s impressive, to say the least. The color seems a bit off. Almost like it’s bleached and dull. You’re clad in a tough layer of a strange material that you can’t seem to identify as any existing fabric. There’s a black bodysuit covering most of your form, with the vitals guarded by the white armor. Noticeably, you’ve transformed with an umbrella on your side, held by a thin cord. You lift up the object. It’s stark-white, with a red tip and black spikes at the edges. The handle has a button on it, to open up the umbrella.

Rico remains dumbfounded.

Appearance-wise, the hood resembles Kamen Rider-Wiseman’s, and a good comparison for the vertical-slit visor would be the Peacekeeper class in For Honor.

Thank you!

You fiddle with the deck for a bit, trying to draw a card. It seems to be instinctual. Once you reach for the buckle, you manage to pull out the CONTRACT card. Rico stares at the table where the card was previously sitting, noticing that it’s gone.

“Huh. Weird.”

The next card you pull out is one titled; SWORD VENT. Unlike the contract card, this one seems to have an image and numbers. You lift it up and show it to Rico.

“Attack power? What do you think that means?”

He thinks for a moment, before motioning to the umbrella.

“You said that the other... Rider guy fought the bird, yeah? Maybe this sword lets you fight it off. It looks a lot more useful than an umbrella, anyway.”

That makes sense. You just need to figure out how to summon it. An idea pops into your head. Maybe if you can use this suit properly, you can defeat the Monster that’s stalking you? You continue playing with the umbrella, eventually deciding to press the button. Instead of opening up the umbrella, it opens a slot on the handle, with a card-shaped opening.

Before you can stick the SWORD VENT in, though, you hear a knock on the door.

“Mitsuko? Rico? You two in here?”

Someone jiggles the knob. You and Rico stare at each other in mild panic. It sounds like Mr. Bannon, your manager. It probably looks a bit bad for the two of you to be locked in the break room like this, even if your shift hasn’t started yet. Not to mention the fact that you’re dressed like a superhero.

Action:

“Just a minute!”

Rico calls out, approaching the door. You panic and start feeling your armour, looking for the fastenings and trying to find a way to peel it off. You tug on your helmet and hood, trying to pull back either.

“Rico? You in there? Why’s the door locked.”

“Yep, I’m in here sir. Just a minute. The door is uhh... It’s jammed, hold on.”

He jiggles the locked handle, glancing back at you and urgently signaling for you to hurry up. It’s clear he can’t come up with an excuse for long, without pissing off your manager.

“Can you twist the knob, sir? Just kinda... Kinda pull the door upwards on your end.”

“Okay. Hang on. You try pulling at the same time?”

While Rico fucks with the door, you try plucking cards out of your deck. The only two you can draw are the CONTRACT and SWORD VENT. Nothing else comes out. This is lame. Only two cards? You thought that if you finished drawing the deck, you might turn back, but that doesn’t seem possible.

You try hiding the umbrella under the chair, stuffing it down there and keeping it out of sight.

“... Doesn’t seem jammed to me, Rico. Is Mitsuko in there? Saw you guys going in there earlier.”

“Uhhh...”

He glances to you, unsure of what to say. You’re stumped too, and decide to focus on your suit.

“... Yes? She’s here.”

An idea hits you. Your transformation happened when you slid the deck into the buckle. So the opposite should bring you back to normal, right?

Right. You grip the buckle and pull hard, trying to yank it out of place. It takes quite a bit of effort, but after a moment, there’s a noticeable clicking sound from it unlocking. Light flashes outwards once more, and you’re left seated on the sofa with the deck in your hands, back in your day clothes.

Rico sighs in relief and unlocks the door, while you hide the deck in your pocket. Mr. Bannon stands in the doorway, looking over the two of you and frowning. He steps in and jiggles the lock from the inside.

“Yeah, nothing’s wrong with the lock. What were you two doing in here?”

There’s nothing related to the Mirror World in here anymore, fortunately. Still, it looks awfully suspicious for two people to suddenly lock the door to a communal area and hide in the middle of the work day. The middle-ages man raises an eyebrow, looking to the two of you. This is awkward.

Action:

>>

Welp, you’ve already passed the DC with the first roll, so it’s fine either way.

“Sorry about that sir. I had a bad fall. Rico was checking my back to see if I bruised it. Didn’t seem appropriate to lift my shirt up in the main space.”

Rico stares at you for a moment, before quickly nodding and going along with the story.

“Yeah, yep. Didn’t want anyone to just uh... Walk in while that was happening, you know?”

To emphasize it, you stand and head over to Mr. Bannon, pointing to the bruises along your neck. His eyes go wide and he clicks his tongue in concern.

“Oh, that looks bad, Mitsuko. I’ve got some ointment in the office, I’ll pass it to you later. Take it easy for today, okay?”

You nod, and he pats you both on the shoulders reassuringly. Mr. Bannon heads back out to the counter, and you both sigh in relief. Rico beams at you.

“Shit, good coverup. I’d never have thought of that. Would’ve been really awkward otherwise.”

Despite the circumstances, you can’t help but smile. You’ve gotten away with it. You return to the couch to retrieve the umbrella, but realize that it’s missing. You double-check with your phone flashlight, and conclude that it vanished along with the armor.

The two of you head out into the cafe, preparing to start work proper. The Tidal Wave Cafe is a Hawaiian-themed place, with a bright atmosphere and relaxing ukulele music playing through the speakers. There’s plenty of blue decor, and ocean motifs decorating the room. As you pass the countertop, you smack the bobblehead hula-girl with the tip of your finger, sending her on a dancing spree.

Mr. Bannon is currently putting together a bowl of Poke for a customer, scooping salmon and rice into a generous heap. Rico stops you halfway to the kitchen.

“Hey, are you sure about working today? You said that the bird was still after you. Standing around at the cashier will put you right in front of a bunch of glass. You confident about it?”

Action:
> “Yeah. I can manage.” (Go to work and deal with anything as it comes.)
> “Maybe... Maybe I should sit the day out.” (Call in sick and go home. Mr. Bannon won’t be upset, he knows that you’re hurt already.)

I'll be fine accepting these to keep things moving along, this time
>>
>>4827540
Hmm, I'm not sure how to respond. I mean, yeah, don't want to be around glass when a Mirror Monster is hunting us. But would it attack when we're around so many other people who can see it? It did grab us when Lestrade was right there, so maybe.

And we can't run from the Crane forever, but I'm just not sure if it's in Mitsuko to decide "yes, I will hunt it down and bind it with my magic cards" so readily. Seems like going monster hunting isn't the first response the typical person would have, even if we've been playing Mitsuko as a bit impulsive. I feel like it would take until at least the second attack to resolve for that.

So yeah, I'm not sure what move to make. Either run for now and get attacked again, or turn and fight immediately. Thoughts, anyone?

> “Maybe... Maybe I should sit the day out.” (Call in sick and go home. Mr. Bannon won’t be upset, he knows that you’re hurt already.)
Okay, I'm going to say go home and do research. Cover up all the reflective surfaces, apply ointment for the bruises like Mr. Bannon suggested (assuming it's not in a bathroom mirror cabinet, bad idea, that), then check on all the /x/-style blogs to see if anyone's heard of mirror monsters before. And keep the deck close.

“Maybe... Maybe I should sit the day out.”

He nods in agreement. You head over to Mr. Bannon just as he finishes up an order for a pair of customers. He turns towards you and smiles.

Bannon is in his late forties. He’s tanned and scarred, with deep smile lines on the edges of his face. He has a buzz cut, and a thin goatee. You’ve always known him as a kind, understanding man. None of you have met his family, but you enjoy working under him.

“Mitsuko. Is something wrong?”

You can tell that he has a good guess already.

“Yeah. Actually, I was wondering if I could head home for today...? I don’t feel too good.”

Your eyes flicker towards the glass storefront, hoping that nothing pops up to assault you in the meantime. Mr. Bannon nods, lifting up a paper bowl and scooping rice and fish into it.

“You want spice with that?”

“Huh?”

He continues filling it up for you, taking it as a yes. Before you can protest, he sets the plastic lid on and presses the bowl of poke into your hands.

“Of course you can. I hope you feel better soon. Drop by and get the ointment on your way, yeah? My wife got it online, it works wonders.”

You nod gratefully and take the bowl. This should be good for dinner. You’re lucky that your boss is understanding. Hopefully you can get back to your regular routine soon, you’ve already missed class. After grabbing the ointment and saying goodbye to Rico, you head to the door and step out, taking a deep breath.

You need to go somewhere. Somewhere safe. Or if not, you’ll need to prepare for an encounter with the creature. You still don’t know how you’ll fight it off, and you’re not confident you can kill it just by swinging a sword and an umbrella. But you’ve got no choice if you want to live.

Action:

Just a little update to the sheet with these traits. New ones can be obtained, and these can be changed over time.

Just a little bit of trivia. Earlier, there was an opportunity to get a Kleptomaniac trait, but the time has already passed for that to be an established part of Mitsuko’s character.

You weave through the streets and avoid any storefronts along the way. Luckily, it hasn’t rained in a week, so there’s no puddles lying in wait to trap you. You make it back to Kestrel Heights University soon. As you’re crossing the grass, however, you turn your head towards the large art sculpture sitting on the lawn. You squint, looking at the reflective surface and spotting the vague shape of the creature behind it.

Damn. Either it was following you, or camping out here the whole time. You have no intention to let it get you, though.

A thought crosses your mind as you watch it approach the sculpture. A high-pitched whine sounds from the surface, giving you a splitting headache. You turn in the opposite direction and return to your room.

It’s here on campus. What if it starts attacking other students? It’s hunting you at the moment. But you’re not going to let it eat you. That leaves hundreds of other victims for it to chase down.

You burst into your room and immediately grab a sheaf of newspapers from the base of the letter-hole. Campus paper. Nothing worth reading. You begin plastering the garbage publication all over your room, blocking off the TV, the mirrors, and the windows. You consider using it on your computer, but you change your mind and boot it up instead. Once the screen is on, it’s no longer reflective.

You sigh and pluck off your shoes, collapsing on your bed to think for a moment.

You’ll need to start somewhere for your research. You’ve had the idea earlier to look at conspiracy boards and search for mentions of a mirror world. You could also start digging into the disappearances. Or something else entirely.

You spend the rest of your night doing research. It’s hard to come across actual discussion centralized around the area you live in. After all, anything like a Kestrel City forum would be more akin to a Facebook group with old people posting stupid shit. You give up on that after a while.

What you manage to find, though, is a paranormal forum. You do your best not to get distracted by crap, but it’s incredibly tempting to open up the more interesting threads and skim through them. You lose quite a bit of time on ‘just five minutes’, over and over. There’s threads on astral projection, people trying to summon succubi, one about vampires, and one calling out everyone on the forum for larping with buzzwords to hook people.

You do find a thread about a hypothetical Mirror dimension. At first, you think you’ve hit the jackpot, but then it just turns into a shitshow of people trying to expand on the mythos. There’s no mention of Mirror Monsters or card decks. It’s mostly about dark doppelgängers and how someone thought their entire family was replaced by their mirror equivalents, and they only found out when they noticed that everybody was now left-handed.

It’s essentially nothing but creepypasta.

You sigh. Just as you’re about to log out, however, you find a thread on a forum made by a deleted user.

The poster uploaded an image of a card deck.

You glance to the one on your bedside table. It’s the same, save for some minor alteration in design. It’s titled: “I found a magic item that lets me travel between worlds, AMA.” The posts consist of people making fun of him. He makes minimal effort to reply, and the few replies describe how he can enter a strange world where everything is reversed. The final reply is by a newly registered user, named: ‘Gubby1872’. It simply says:

“You’re in danger. I’ve DM’ed you.”

And that’s where the thread ends.

You push your chair back and sigh, looking at the clock. It’s about 9pm. Tomorrow is Friday. You’re exhausted from the day’s events, and really want to crash. But you’ve also done none of your schoolwork for today. Your course is a fast-paced one. Fall behind too far and you may not be able to catch up. You also want to look into this more, however. You have time to message the user before going to bed or starting on homework, since you don’t expect an instant reply anyway.

Your eagerness prompts you to half-ass your opsec. Fortunately, you’re still able to simply sign up a throwaway while using one of those free proxy sites. You might have been finessed into actually paying money for a VPN otherwise.

You take a photo of your contract card. That ought to be enough evidence. If Gubby isn’t also a LARPer, that’ll confirm things for you. The original user is deleted, so that’s definitely not a lead you can follow, but Gubby is still accessible. You send them a quick message with the card photo attached.

Homework schmomework. You have enough on your plate already. You feel like you’re making a big mistake in terms of your academic life, but your circumstances are genuinely life-threatening. You decide to try and get some rest. You can decide tomorrow whether to go to class or keep up your research.

.
.
.

Your sleep is dreamless and fitful. You’re stuck in that horrid, half-lucid state for most of the night, where every creak and bang from pipes and walls makes you think that a Mirror Monster is about to burst through your wall and rip you to shreds.

Halfway through the night, however, you open your eyes to see an apparition hovering over the foot of your bed. You’re paralyzed, unable to pull the sheets over yourself and shield your face from the figure. They reach out, holding a hand over you and rasping in a dry, scratchy voice.

“... You. Not chosen. A rogue element. But no matter.”

It waltzes across your room, pressing a hand against the mirror that you’ve covered in paper and pointed towards a wall.

“Fight, if you wish to survive. The other Riders... defeat them, and your wish may come true.”

Without further elaboration, the lucid dream begins fading. The figure, its face warped and indistinguishable, runs a finger down the edge of the paper, causing shreds of it to peel off. The person then vanishes into nothingness.

You gasp in fright as you jolt upright. Your alarm rings several paces away from you. What the hell was that?

You pinch the bridge of your nose and head to the bathroom to wash up before starting your day. No message from Gubby yet, but you can decide where you’re going to go today.

You glance towards your larger backpack. You didn't have the time to sort through it yesterday, so you take the time to arrange your books and make sure everything is in order. Half of your stuff was lost yesterday, but luckily, it was mostly inconsequential trinkets. Your electronics are safe. You make sure that your books and laptop are secure, before taking a quick shower and preparing for class.

Your journey is a brisk one. You glance around like a schizo the whole time, visibly nervous at the sight of any reflective surfaces. As usual, you reach class early. Your friends come by a couple minutes before the start of the lesson, laughing and joking with each other. Remy, Sandra, and Kaya. They're still talking about what you did last night, and you find yourself wishing you could have gone along.

"Hey, Mitsuko. You're coming tonight, right? Come on. You already missed out yesterday." Sandra asks. You're not in the mood for it, but you tell them that you'll consider it if you have time. You don't have work on Fridays, so it's an option.

Class soon starts, and you all notice that Bernard is running late. Remy frowns and glances towards the door.

"Huh. I'm sure he got home alright, we split off really close to the dorms. I'll give him a call later, he's not responding to my texts."

Morning lectures are soon over, and he hasn't responded to any of your attempts to contact him.

"Yesterday it was you. Guess it's his turn to sleep in, huh?" says Kaya. You smile uneasily, tugging at your turtleneck and making sure the bruises are hidden.

You have some time before afternoon classes. Usually you guys go get lunch or something, but you're feeling like you might want to break off today and go do something. You managed to focus on the lesson, at least. It was easier to grasp today, but you're missing some info and notes due to skipping out the previous day. Your assignment is due next Monday and you're stumped without that.

On the other hand, Bernard's disappearance is giving you a sinking feeling in your gut. The others are talking about going to look for him at his dorm. You're a bit more of a private, reserved person, so they know not to come knocking on your door. For Bernard, though, they have no such reservations, and you know that he wouldn't mind a house call.

If he's fine, that is.

Action:
> Spend lunchtime alone (Write-in what you want to do/check out.)
> Look for Bernard with everyone.
> Ask them to work through yesterday's material with you.
> Ditch class for the rest of the day. (Write-in where you want to go.)

Option 1 and 3 are not exclusive, and you may change your mind and either skip or go to class if the time hasn't passed yet.

The four of you arrive at Bernard's apartment before getting lunch. Sandra is vocal about wanting to check on him before you all head out without him. When you get there, however, your head begins to ache. You wince as a sharp pain shoots through you, and a high-pitched whining noise fills your ears. Kaya reaches out to steady you as you lean against a wall.

"Woah. Mitsuko, you okay?"

"Yeah... Yeah, I'm fine. That noise just gives me a headache."

The others give you odd looks.

"Noise?"

You glance up at the door, your heart sinking as you locate the source of the sound. It's coming from inside. It's the same type of noise you heard when travelling to the Mirror World, and when picking up on the strange monster. Whatever it is, it spells bad news for Bernard. You find yourself choking up at the possibility of it having gotten to other people already.

Remy jiggles the knob. It's locked. The group knocks on the door, calling out to Bernard.

"Hellooo! Bernie? You in there, dude?"

The whining stops abruptly, almost as soon as it started. You stand behind them and watch the door, breathing heavily.

"I- I gotta go." You blurt out. Kaya turns to look at you, raising an eyebrow.

"All of a sudden? I thought we were gonna go get lunch?"

"I, uh, I forgot I had something on. I think I'll see you guys later. It's important."

Remy shrugs. The group doesn't seem too urgent. For all they know, Bernard is blowing off class somewhere, if he's not at home. But you know otherwise. You know there's a very real chance he's injured or dead. And you can't help but feel that you could have prevented it. Maybe other people were attacked too?

How do you feel about this? (Will influence your Rider motivations.)

Choice:
> Guilty- You could have stopped the monster if you fought or searched for it with your newfound powers. If it hadn't been lurking around your school in search of you, nobody would have gotten hurt. You could have done something earlier to protect people from the monsters.
> Justify- It's not your fault. You've been thrown into this strange world against your will. You were just doing everything you could to survive. Save people? You're not some superhero, you're in just as much danger as the rest of them.
> Write-in- How else could you feel?

Either way, you need to go. You make a quick exit and leave them behind to search for the source of the noise. You run across campus, going wherever the sharp buzzing is. When you pursue it, your head hurts a bit less, allowing you to focus on where it is and attempt to track it down. It sharpens as you a reach a fountain nearby. Several isolated people are sitting around it, and there's a couple tossing coins into the base of it. In the curtain of water being launched out, you spy the figure of the bird, waddling forward and approaching the mirror's surface. It's poised to strike. It doesn't seem like its noticed you, but it's close to bursting out from the mirror again.

It'll be hard to transform without anyone seeing.

Action:

> Watch and wait to see what it does.
> Try to distract it through the mirror.
> Dive into the fountain as fast as possible to confront it. (HENSHIN!)

You... Aren't sure what to feel. On one hand, the crane was after you in the first place. You led it here. But you were never in a position to go hunting it down, and if it had killed you, it would have been free to just start eating everybody else here too. Even now, you hardly feel prepared. You have just the faintest ideas of your abilities, after experimenting with Rico.

You push all other thoughts aside for now. You don't have an ideological reason for this fighting. You haven't quite found your resolve yet, and you're neither fighting for yourself, nor to save others. All you want right now is to achieve what's important in the heat of the moment: Saving Bernard, if it's even possible.

Mitsuko is fighting for ???

"HENSHIN!"

You call out, holding the deck in front of you. The belt appears before you, reflected in the water's surface as it snaps into place on your waist. You slide it into place. There's a flash of light, and you're unsure whether anyone has seen your face before the transformation. You take a brief moment to look over your armour again. It still looks dull and incomplete, but hopefully it will do. You leap straight into the water.

It feels like you're falling to your death, as you spiral through the screaming, reflective void. This time, you're able to keep your eyes open, allowing you to see the kaleidoscope patterns that swirl in the space between worlds. You wish you could take a smoother ride.

When you emerge into the Mirror World, the Crane-beast is standing in the same fountain, poised to strike at the surface and pull someone through. Its attention isn't on you just yet, and you have time to surprise it. Or you could bide your time.

Action:
> Attack the Crane straight on! (Sword-Vent, or by hand?)
> Wait to see what exactly it does.

Will write up a post in a bit. To confirm, leaving it to hunt means that it'll continue with attacking the people that it's targeting right now.

Yeah, okay, definitely be listening for screams, then. We're on a sharp time limit.
>>
>>4832560

You leave it be for now, hoping that it doesn't start attacking the people that it's eyeing currently. It stalked you for quite a while before it actually struck, so that means there's time, right...?

This is the first time you've had your suit with you in the Mirror World. You feel much better already. There's no aura that presses down on you, and you don't feel like you're disintegrating, luckily. Power courses through you. You feel like you can run faster, jump higher, do everything better. There's no time to play around, though, so you jog at your normal pace.

You make a beeline for Bernard's dorm. It's only a minute or two away, so you should be able to reach it. As soon as you arrive, you knock on the door, urgently waiting for an answer. You spend a moment waiting, before realising that you ought to go in by force. It's not the real world, after all.

You kick at the knob, feeling confident in the strength of this suit. The entire door splinters inwards, shattering into chunks of wood. You're stunned by your own strength for a moment, before you snap back to reality and burst into the dorm room. There's little sign of a struggle. You've been in here a couple times, and it looks the same. You stop by the various mirrors, suspiciously eyeing them and noting the possible spots the Crane could have come through. There's quite a few of them.

There's no blood, no body parts, nothing. But a sense of foreboding fills you as you sift through his bathroom. You eventually step on something that makes your blood run cold. Your suit has cracked the screen beyond repair, but you can tell that it's his mobile phone. This doesn't belong in the mirror world. When you press the power button, it fizzes to life pathetically, displaying his lock screen. This is recent.

And if he was here in the mirror world, you doubt he could have survived that horrible disintegration that overcame you. Your attempt to touch his mirror and phase into the real world is met with failure. Seems like you can only go back the way you came at the moment. You stare at the remains of his phone for a moment, debating what to do. Turmoil rumbles within you, as you consider the fact that one of your friends is gone. Dead. And nobody will ever know what happened to him, except you.

You hear a loud scream from outside, along with the sound of screeching and chirping. The crane has struck, but maybe you can still save someone if you go out now.

Once again, you'll be contesting the speed of the Monster. I realised I made a small mistake in allocation when I asked for a Physical roll against the Monster's speed last time. Final roll: 79 (89-10) vs 85

Close failure.

No more time. You stash the phone in your belt, shuddering at the thought, and make a break for the next victim.

You burst out of the room, dashing down the stairs two at a time and trying to make it back to the fountain. In your haste, you tumble down the last few steps and land on your face. You find that with your armor, something like that doesn’t even hurt you in the slightest, and you continue moving without losing any time.

Time, however, is what you don’t have. By the time you reach the Crane, its already managed to pull somebody in. You recognize the woman as one of the two who were hanging out by the water’s edge. In your absence, the Crane has grabbed her and is looming over her, preparing to drive its beak down. From her body, plumes of shimmering dust are rising, and you can see her disintegrating before your very eyes. You feel a sense of urgency overcome you. You might be about to watch a human die right in front of your eyes.

The Mirror Monster thrusts it’s head down, stabbing into her shoulder. She screams in pain, her whole body warping and shimmering as she begins to vanish. You were too late to stop her from being hurt. The beast makes a slurping noise, draining her of something as it feeds.

You have to do something. Right now. If you don’t get her to safety, either the Mirror World or the Monster will kill her in seconds. Whatever you do that doesn’t involve sending her back will take up about half that time, if you’re willing to risk it in these circumstances.

You step towards the Monster. From what the detective told you, you apparently need to form a contract to survive. That was how he put it. You don’t know much else about what it means, nor the consequences, but having one of these monsters on your side would help keep you safe. There’s also the issue of it currently attacking someone. This card is probably the safest way to halt it immediately. You’re not confident in slaying it with a sword, and you can take a good enough guess to assume that you can at least call it off if it has a contract with you.

You call out to it.

“Oi! Over here! Hey!”

The crane hardly looks up from tearing into the woman, so you yell as loud as you can and charge forward, waving your arms to distract it. It screeches and hops off the woman, who seems to be falling apart more and more. Her silhouette is indistinct and hazy, but she’s still moving on the ground.

The bird lunges at you with its beak, but you pull the card out of your deck and flash it in front of the creature. A blinding light erupts from the item, dazzling both you and the Mirror Monster. Everything seems to change within the light.
>>
>>4834201

Your vision clears within a dark void. You’re not sure where exactly in the Mirror World this is. The first thing you notice is that you’ve been stripped of your armour. The second thing is that the bird is standing before you, wings spread wide open and regarding you with a cold, amber eye. You back away, looking up at it and feeling a pang of fear yet again. Was that contract card a trap...?

Fuck, fuck, fuck. It approaches, drawing closer and closer to you. Something feels different about it, though. The towering bird is missing the hungry, predatory air that it had before. It seems to be examining you now, appraising you and bobbing its long neck back and forth. The creature spreads its wings, and you feel a tenuous connection beginning to form between you. You catch a glimpse of its vast, alien instinct, hiding behind its robotic body.

The crane lowers its head in a sort of bow, and you feel power from it coursing into you. You’ve been linked to the beast, and your contract is complete. You implicitly understand the terms. It’ll serve you, so long as you help it gain strength and feed it. With what, you’re not completely sure yet. Despite your new bond, you can’t help but feel some disgust at your new partner. After all, it tried to kill you. And it... It ate Bernard. Can you really get along with something who killed your friend?

You feel your suit forming around you yet again. This time, color floods into it as it forms. The dull white becomes a shiny, polished layer. The peak of your hood turns red, and your umbrella is covered in swirling patterns. When closed, it almost looks like the beak of the bird. Strength courses through your body, and you know now that you can actually put up a fight against monsters like its kind.

Before you know it, you’re back in reality, and no time has passed at all. The crane backs away from its would-be-victim, and with a yell, you shove her into the fountain and send her careening back into the real world, where help is sure to be. You turn to look at your new Monster, examining it in full.

Between our visor and Sword Vent, I think we have enough weapons, so Strike and Stab don't interest me. Looks like we’ve got our winner!

Mitsuko da Silva will henceforth be Kamen Rider Tsuru, partner to Massakaze.

You stare at the water as it ripples. Through the other side, you can vaguely see the woman groaning and rolling in the fountain. Already, people are coming to her aid, and you sigh in relief. Seems like she’ll be okay. You return your attention to the Mirror World, examining your Monster.

It won’t attack you anymore, at least. But you can’t help but feel afraid of it. It chased you down, killed your friend, and the only thing stopping it from hurting you further is the promise of future strength. It wants food. Either humans or monsters will give it the life energy it needs. And the energy from monsters probably comes from eating humans in the first place, so either way, lives have to be sacrificed to sustain the bird.

It’s sickening, and you still can’t parse your feelings towards the bird. It turns away from you abruptly, causing you to flinch. The bird flaps its wings and takes off, heading off elsewhere in the city.

You’re not sure how long you’ve been in here. Six minutes, maybe? You don’t have your phone in this form. Right now, you have some things to figure out.

Action:
> Investigate your card deck and spend some time experimenting in the Mirror World.

ADVENT and FINAL VENT summons Massakaze to battle alongside you. You know that much, at least. SWORD VENT and LIFT VENT seem like things you can experiment with.

You click the button on the handle of your Rainvisor again. It opens up the same slot you saw yesterday. This time, you’re able to stick the card in without distractions. You pump the umbrella to close the slot, causing the device to read it out.

“SWORD VENT—“ it declares.

A shadow passes over you as Massakaze flaps past your field of vision. Something drops from it, spinning towards you at high speed. You manage to catch it, and marvel at the sight of the weapon.

Conveniently, literally the first Google Image result for ‘Wing Sword’ is exactly what I wanted.

You give it a few experimental swings. This is a nice, sharp blade. It’s large enough that you can add both hands to the handle to increase its power, but small enough to be wielded with one hand.

Next up is LIFT VENT. You slide the card in and pump the umbrella. Noticeably, once you’ve summoned your sword, the card within the visor has disappeared.

Massakaze appears from above once more. With a screech, it flaps its wings several times, creating a twister that spins across the fountain and raises two waterspouts. You hold your ground, watching it tear past you. Any enemy standing there would likely have been lifted up into the air. You could potentially ride the current too, with practice.

Though the deck seems large, you can’t draw any other cards from it apart from your ADVENT and FINAL VENT. Seems like that’s your limit for now.

As you finish experimenting, you notice that your hands are starting to fizzle. Powder rises off your armor in the same way it did when the woman was disintegrating. You feel a tinge of the nausea from yesterday.

Your time here is running out. Its been about... A little under ten minutes? Seems like you still can’t stay here for long. You’ll have to make an exit.

Action:
> Leave the way you came. (Fountain that the woman left through.)
> Look for another mirror to exit through. (Where?)

You dive into the fountain before it’s too late, not wanting to get wracked with that pain again. Once more, you’re in the strange space in between worlds. But unlike last time, you feel like you’re traveling a lot faster and smoother. It’s not like falling through an abyss anymore. Contracting a Monster has allowed you to draw out the proper capabilities of the suit.

You emerge in the fountain, surrounded by concerned students and a few professors. Your shoes instantly get drenched. Few pay you any mind. They’re mostly focused on the girl who’s lying on the grass a distance away, groaning as others press down on her shoulder wound. You hear the high-pitched whine that accompanies a monster, and see Massakaze simply observing through the reflection.

While you were experimenting with your deck, she’s been stabilized by the people around her. It’s not a lethal wound, fortunately, but she’s babbling and delirious. Security personnel are wandering around, looking for an alleged stabber who must have pulled her into the fountain.

You watch from afar, relieved that you managed to save her. Though not without injury to her. Her life is secure for now.

Your hand drifts to the phone in your pocket. You make sure not to touch it directly. Now that you’re not in the suit, you would end up leaving prints all over it.

Your actions may have lead to her being hurt, so you feel like you have to at least see it through and make sure she gets help. You linger around until the ambulance arrives to take her to the hospital, but slink off before the police can start asking questions. Hopefully there aren’t too many witnesses.

You head off to one of the food courts on campus, finding your friends gathered around a table. They seem a lot less chatty than usual, with two of their number gone. You watch them from afar, shuddering as you consider that there’ll never be five of you again. Bernard is gone. And his killer will never be brought to justice. You try your hardest not to choke up as you approach them, trying to act as though nothing is wrong. His phone remains in your pocket, cold and heavy; the sole piece of evidence remaining.

“Mitsuko! Thought you were busy?” calls out Kaya, once you’re close enough to spot.

“I... Finished my thing early. Guess I can just stick with you guys the rest of the day.”

“Cool, cool. You heard from Bernard yet?”

You shake your head, feeling like a liar as you settle into your chair and stare at the table. They seem to perk up a bit now that you’re here. You make sure to ask them for help with the work that you’ve missed out on, during the free periods where you’re hanging out around campus. At one point, you all spot the commotion at the fountain. You think you spot the familiar figure of the detective.

“Wonder what’s going on,” says Remy, as you guys pass it.

“Didn’t you hear? Some girl got stabbed over there. They sent out an alert about it earlier, that there’s a possible stabber on the loose.” Sandra replies.

“Holy shit. Are you sure we should be hanging around campus while this is going on?”

“That’s what we have you for, isn’t it? You’ll be our meat shield until Bernard gets back.”

You laugh along with their banter, but it comes off a little forced. The four of you finish the day as per usual, and you have a decent amount of success paying attention in class due to getting enough sleep. Once the day is over, your clique heads out of the lecture hall.

It’s Friday evening! And that means it’s prime time to go out, if you’re feeling up to it. Your friends are discussing hitting up a local bar- Crawley’s. You know the place. There’s live music, good drinks, but really overpriced appetizers. You guys go there pretty often.

You can’t keep moping in your room. You’ve been stressed as hell the past few days, and if you start secluding yourself from everyone, it’ll only get worse. It weighs on you that you won’t be able to tell anyone about Bernard, except for Rico.

You accept their invite and take the bus downtown. Despite the events making it feel unsafe to you, Kestrel City is the same as ever. In such a big city, the increase in disappearances isn’t felt on a population level. Things are going on as per usual, and on a Friday evening, the city is as lively as you’d expect. You pass businessmen heading to their favorite haunts after works, groups of College and University students, and construction workers unwinding after spending a hard day working on the ever-present building projects.

The four of you spend some time hanging around before going to the bar. You stop at an ice cream stand and get dessert, chat about the annoying people in class, and wonder why Bernard still isn’t picking up. You grow quiet whenever the latter topic crops up.

Eventually, you reach the bar. Remy forks out some money for appetizers to share, blanching once he looks at the menu and sees how ungodly expensive the cheese fries are. You all sit around chilling, and you feel yourself starting to relax a bit. Maybe going on a bender today will take your mind off everything. The band takes their place on stage at 8:30, and the bar begins to fill up with the sound of rock music.

Action:
> Drink a normal amount. Just a few beers or cocktails, nothing too crazy.
> Don’t order much, you can’t stomach it right now.

You pick at the cheese fries, prompting a declaration from Remy that you'll have to split the bill since you partook. Sandra rolls her eyes and takes some too, while Kaya giggles and keeps her hands off it. You spend a bit of time relaxing with your group of friends. Things almost feel normal again. You order a Margarita and sip from the straw, enjoying the sour tang. The group orders a beer tower too, and you split it with them, taking some time to play a few drinking games with a bunch of classmates who happen to be at the same bar.

It's a nice evening. The band continues to play, filling the room with a deep rumble that vibrates through your cups. Within the rock and roll, though, you hear a sharp whine that stands out from the rest. You wince and clutch your head, instinctively turning your head to the source. It's hard to see the flicker of motion, with all the smoke from the fog machine and waving lights. But there's no mistaking it. You feel the pull from Massakaze too. It's hungry, and wants to hunt alongside you.

There's a Mirror Monster afoot, and it's going for someone in the vicinity. You'll have to chase it down to stop anything from happening. Fortunately, you're not too tipsy, and haven't gotten too shitfaced to fight.

About fighting, though... How exactly do you feel about it? Especially at this exact moment? (Will influence personality and establish Rider motivations.)

Decision:

> It comes first. If somebody is in danger, you're the only one who has the power to stop it. You're basically a superhero, and you're starting to feel the burden of that responsibility after Bernard's death. You'll fight for others.

> Reluctantly. If you don't fight, your Monster will eat you. Your brushes with death have led to you prioritising your own survival. Perhaps you shouldn't be jumping into the fray unnecessarily. Maybe you'll even prioritise your own daily life instead of running off to deal with things like this. You'll fight to survive.

> Only for what you get in return. You're curious about all this. Perhaps you've always just been this cold, but you see this as a major curiosity. You want to get your Monster stronger, you want to research this world, you want to experience things. You fight not for others, but for your own whims.

> Write-In. (I'll accept any motivation that's sufficiently strong. Subject to Veto if it's too off the wall.)

You clench your fists and feel your resolve harden within you. No more. Not if you can help it. People are dying to these strange creatures, and you have the power to do something now. The stranger, Bernard, the few disappearances across your campus, all of these could have been prevented if someone in your position was able to help. And now, you're that special someone.

You are Kamen Rider Tsuru.

Pushing your half-filled glass forward, you stand up and turn your back on your friends, sticking your hands in your pockets.

"I'll be in the bathroom. Shouldn't be more than ten minutes."

Sandra nods, starting to stand up. Kaya does the same, preparing to go with you.

"Oh, uh... Actually... I'll go by myself. Sorry."

They both glance at each other, a little surprised at the sudden change. But they shrug and sit back down.

"If you're fine."

Without further ado, you push through the crowd and slip off in search of the noise. The sound gets sharper towards the toilets, and you make a sharp turn into the room without hesitation. Any noise that the entity is making is drowned out by the raucous applause and blaring music from outside. So it's no surprise that nobody can hear the giant beast smashing through a bathroom stall, assaulting a man who's, unfortunately, in the middle of a crap. He screams as the creature closes in on him, wrapping multiple sets of arms around him.

Your body moves before you're fully aware of it, and you raise a leg to kick the thing between the legs. It doesn't seem to feel it, but it turns around and hisses, revealing a set of mandibles beneath two bulbous eyes. It resembles a gigantic cockroach-man, with a sort of purple mohawk and spiked bracelets around its limbs. The Mirror Monster charges backwards, its head spinning a full 180 degrees. It bowls you over and dives back into the mirror once spotted, leaving the man terrified and traumatised on the porcelain bowl.

At least he won't be having trouble shitting.

You quickly assess that he's alright, and turn around to transform.

"HENSHIN!"

The armour clasps itself on you, and you dive into the surface. This time, however, you end up standing in the strange, kaleidoscopic void, rather than falling through. Next to you is a large vehicle, with a reclining seat and a convertible top. You lose a few precious moments staring at it, taken aback by this thing. Is this a benefit of being a full Rider?

You leap into it, and fortunately, everything fastens itself near automatically. Clasps on the side attach themselves to the strange circular spurs that your outfit has, and the Rideshooter blitzes off into the mirror world. It's far faster than before, and you soon emerge in the Mirror World Bathroom. Unfortunately, your bike smashes through the flimsy plastic stalls, demolishing the whole row as you emerge into the chamber. You wince, but quickly get out.
>>
>>4838424
Aww yeah, Rideshooter. That thing was so dumb and so cool at the same time.

There's no noise on this side of the world, so you're able to exit the bathroom and chase down the creature easily. It's currently in the middle of the bar, pushing tables and chairs aside. You find yourself sprinting with all your strength, marvelling at how fast you're able to move in this suit. You tackle it from behind and it collapses on the stage, quickly pushing you off it and screeching. The two of you face off, and you stare the Mirror Monster down while preparing to strike.

COMBAT IS ABOUT TO BEGIN!

=====

I'm still working out the rules for combat, and it's subject to change. But here's the gist of it.

Combat begins with the participant with the higher speed declaring a move. This move can be a Card, a standard Melee attack, or additional options that might crop up in the future.

Every attack starts with 2d100. Extra dice are added based on your stats, and modifiers are added based on circumstances and advent card power. Every 1000 power is a +5 to the roll.

A basic attack uses strength, and gains no modifiers. This consists of basic Rider hand-to-hand combat, or using your Visor.

Using a card might use Strike, Shoot, Special, or Sturdiness. I'll post a sheet listing which cards correspond to what, in the next post.

The first attacker declares their move, and rolls the corresponding dice. The enemy then has to CLASH using their own actions. For example, you roll to use your SWORD VENT, which would be 6d100 + 10. The enemy Mirror Monster clashes with a basic Attack, rolling 4d100. Its rolls will collide with yours in order. It takes 1 WOUND for each of the dice contests that it loses. And since you have two more dice than it, that's two guaranteed wounds, as it doesn't have enough dice to contest.

If a defender has extra dice, they can use the additional dice rolls to contest their earlier failures and avoid damage.

The defender may use a Guard Vent, or try to dodge with Speed. Speed doesn't need you to consume a card. But each time you dodge, you lose one dice for future speed rolls, giving it diminishing returns. Guard, on the other hand, uses Sturdiness but tends to have higher modifications and limited uses of the card.

As a final note, the Special stat also serves as the asspull stat. Similar to how Riders gain new gadgets in the nick of time, in the early episodes, you may declare and roll your Special Die once on each turn. Upon meeting the DC, you gain a new card you can use. The longer the battle drags out, the more likely it becomes that you can pull it off, to a certain limit.

=====

You have the first move. You may:

> Attack! (4d100)
> SWORD VENT (6d100+10)
> LIFT VENT (4d100+10)
> FINAL VENT (10d100+30) [AVAILABLE IN 2 TURNS]

> Special (Roll 2d100 to get a new card. DC is 100 and decreases each turn.)

You pull your card out of your deck and slide it into the Rainvisor. With a satisfying snap, it clicks into place and beeps.

"SWORD VENT."

The blade comes sailing out of nowhere, and you catch the weapon in both hands. You hold it in front of you, taking a deep breath and calming your nerves. You've never been in a fight before. Not even a playground scrap. So fighting a Monster in an alternate dimension is obviously rather stressful. But you have to do this. You have burning resolve inside you, you have this suit giving you strength, and you're spurred on by the desire to take this thing down before it can kill anyone.

"... You're going down."

"KRRRSH!"

The beast chitters as you charge forward.

Roll them dice! 6d100 + 10. The Mirror Monster will contest with a standard ATTACK, trying to scratch and scrape at your armour.

You leap into action, swinging your sword over and over. Sparks fly each time you make contact with the Mirror Monster's limbs. It seems just as sturdy as you and your armour, but you're visibly wearing it down. The cockroach-thing manages to counter one of your strikes, however, escaping the flurry for a moment and landing one hit on you. It swings its claws into your helmet, sending you reeling for a moment before you continue to cut and cleave. You feel swift. Elegant. Like a crane dancing around and delivering surgical strikes.

Screeching in pain, the creature pushes you away and begins a flurry of its own. It swings at you repeatedly, throwing everything it has into a series of swipes and punches.

On one of your swings, the Mirror Monster manages to catch your sword-arm. It promptly disarms you, violently pounding on your one arm with all three of its limbs. You shout in pain as it strikes you repeatedly, sending a barrage of sparks up from your suit. It feels like getting hit by a hammer over and over. Fortunately, your suit doesn't break. Not even the softer underskin of it. You manage to pull your hand out and dodge a couple of attacks, but you're rather worn down by it. Fighting is a bit harder than you thought.

You retrieve your Rainvisor and hold it in front of you, keeping the tip of the umbrella pointed at the Cockroach. Your other hand prepares to retrieve a card. It's your turn to attack, and its back on the defensive, left to either clash and counterattack, or guard with its thick shell. Your deck still has plenty of options, and you have one more use of everything.

You pull another card from your deck. This time, it's the one with your Mirror Monster on it. You flip it around and stick it into your visor, slamming it shut and summoning your ally.

Massakaze bursts through the wall, screeching as it reaches out to rake Rockandroach with its claws. It manages to seize the other beast in its grip. You stand there and watch as your Monster savagely assaults the other, crushing its carapace with its claws and slamming it into the ground repeatedly. Speakers and wires go tumbling off the stage in the chaos. Before Massakaze can reach down and impale the roach, however, all four of its hands wrap around the bird's beak. It heaves and pushes it off, sending your Monster sprawling across the room. It screeches and flees through the same hole it made upon entry, leaving you to fight the roach by hand again.

The creature shakes the bangles around its limbs. Its long antennae droop down in front of its body, hooking themselves upon its belt. You wonder what it's doing for a moment. It then begins to strum, using the spikes to play the strings and creating a deafening cacophony. You clutch your hands over your ears as the sound assaults you, disorienting you with the noise of a guitar playing.

Rockandroach uses SONIC THRASHING!

As the Monster equivalent of a Special card, it works just like Lift Vent does. It'll roll a 2d100+20. You cannot undo failures via extra defensive dice, and for each failure, you suffer a penalty next turn.

How do special effects of cards work when using to defend? If we counter attack with a Lift Vent to disrupt the Roackandroach's song with some wind, will it get penalties next turn as well? Or is it just a waste since all that matters here is good rolls?
>>
>>4838932

When you use a card to defend, you're consuming it and having its full effect take place. So if you use Lift Vent, your 4d100+10 will be competing with its 2d100. If you outroll it, it takes those penalties next turn, yep.

Similarly, if you use attack, you try to clash with its offensive dice using your own. Winning means that it takes damage.
>>
>>4838950
Ah, excellent. Then I think the sensible thing to do is either Sword Vent to get off some guaranteed heavy damage before we're penalized, or Lift Vent to penalize it at least as much as we're going to be penalized. I'm going to go with Sword Vent, if only because I kind of want to save Lift Vent for the finisher.

The sound hurts your ears. You recoil as it blares out, getting louder and louder with each strum of the cockroach's antennae. It seems to be really getting into it, repeatedly blaring the loud noise until your hearing is nearly gone. You feel dizzy, and you stagger about from the nausea. Hopefully the damage to your inner ear isn't too severe. During its flurry, however, you manage to get your card into the visor once again. It's the last SWORD VENT in your Advent Deck, and you absolutely make it count.

"SWORD VENT." your Rainvisor declares, as you pump the umbrella.

"RARGH!"

You reach forward and slash. The tip of your sword cleaves through the antennae, leaving cherry-red markings as the cables are snapped. Rockandroach screeches in pain and fury as a shower of sparks fly, and your blade comes down again to cut into its carapace. It topples off the stage into the bar area and tries to scurry back, eyeing you with its gross compound eyes.

Its slowly being worn down. In a best case scenario, you could end it right now. Or you could keep softening it up. Your time limit isn't near its end yet.

"LIFT VENT!"

You slide another card into the Visor. This time, Masakaze bursts in through the roof, catching the Mirror Monster by surprise. It attempts to wrap its limbs up and curl into a ball, to avoid whatever attack is coming. It's pointless, however, as it's not a direct attack. The bird flaps its wings, creating the twin twisters again. Rockandroach is lifted into the air, hissing as it's tossed about and buffeted by the gust. It slams against various surfaces, and chairs and tables are sent flying across the room by the sudden galewind. You swing your hand and smash a chair apart, stopping it from indiscriminately hitting you.

The roach finally falls onto the ground, dizzy and wounded. As you approach it, it staggers towards you, attempting to punch your lights out haphazardly. It looks like it's on its last legs, and you're close to taking it down for good. You haven't spent too much time in here either.

As you try to reach for your deck, the Cockroach seizes you. It grabs you by the arms and begins pummelling your stomach, causing you to double over. It's a dirty, desperate strike from it. You manage to knee the bastard in the stomach and push him back, breaking free from your restraints by kicking him through the hole in the wall that Masakaze entered through

You feel it. It's time to end this. Your hand reaches into your deck, pulling out the white card with the golden insignia of your crane. You click the button on the handle of the Rainvisor, popping the slot out and sliding your card into place.

With a resounding click, the visor loads it up.

"FINAL VENT."

https://youtu.be/nQFcZ7CtTCk?t=52

The roach turns tail and tries to run. But like a stealth plane, Masakaze descends on it out of nowhere, lifting it into the sky and making a large loop. You see it scratching and ripping into its body as it flies down the street. The metal beak descends over and over. When it's far enough away, the bird turns to face you. It blitzes downwards to street level, slamming the monster into it and beginning to fly forward. The claws press it against the asphalt, sending up a deluge of sparks as it grinds the entire body of the monster against the ground. Your Monster approaches you like an airplane on a runway.

Instinctually understanding its intent, you shout out in fury and charge forward as well, your umbrella-like visor held in front of you. Your light footsteps tap against the ground as you sprint towards your monster, picking up more and more speed. Once Rockandroach has been sufficiently dragged across the ground, and stabbed numerous times with that beak, Masakaze takes off and flings it towards you, sending the creature sailing helplessly through the air.

"DISSAPEAR!"

You slam your weapon forward, yelling as the full impact of the creature collides with the sharp tip. You impale it all the way through, causing a colossal explosion that blinds you temporarily and creates a crater in the street.

When the smoke clears, you're left breathing heavily in the centre, with no sign of the destroyed monster except for the glowing ball of light rising into the air.

You turn towards the bar, searching for a mirror to return to the bar with. Its been a long night, and you feel like you're now justified in taking a few more drinks. Before you get five feet, however, the ground ahead of you explodes into rubble and sparks. You shout out in alarm, tumbling over and quickly pushing yourself back upright.

Walking down the street is a familiar figure. They're difficult to see in the evening light, and you didn't spot them coming. Two ear-like protrusions stick out on the side of their helmet. The lines on their horizontal visor sits above a fanged snarl, and they hold a massive hand-cannon. It looks like an obscenely large revolver, around the size of your forearm. Before you can speak, they shoot again, blowing the ground to pieces and sending you rolling across the ground again.

The Rider just watches for a moment, before slowly approaching you.

The nearest mirror you can spot is a streetside one. It's risky to jump back into the real-world street, but you're literally being shot at, so it's probably worth the risk in this urgent situation. One bullet clips you in the side, and you drop forward, clutching at it futilely. Even through the armour, it hurts like hell, and you can't even press on the wound or do anything to lessen it. You lunge for the mirror.

The Rider spots it too late. They shoot at it, but you're inside before any other bullets can hit you. You're sent through the tunnel again, your flight faster and more controlled than before, and emerge into the real street. Not a lot of people are paying attention, and you don't think anybody sees you emerging from it. A second after you tumble onto the road, however, the mirror shatters in front of you. That seems to get people's attention. It doesn't look good. There's a broken street mirror, and a slightly drunk Uni student (You) lying on the floor in front of it.

You get up and stagger back to the bar.

You make your way back into the bar, where you slink into the bathroom and sit in a stall for a bit. You groan and lift up your shirt, examining the welt where the bullet struck you. A bunch of other wounds cover your body as well, but fortunately, nothing on the face or anywhere that would stand out. Its barely been ten minutes since you left, so at the very least, it's not suspicious.

After calming yourself down, you emerge from the bathroom. There's a bouncer outside the male bathrooms, speaking to the man who you saved from the monster. Peeking in reveals that a second bouncer is investigating the bashed-down door. As you pass, the man spots you and points at you, mumbling something in a half-drunk state. You quickly return to your friends.

"Hey, Mitsuko! Just in time. We were thinking of splitting another tower. You down?"

You settle into your seat, smiling slightly. Well, you've earned it. You just had your first victory as a Kamen Rider. And if there's nobody who knows about it to celebrate with you, then you'll just drink to yourself.

"I'm down."

For the rest of the night, you manage to enjoy the company of your friends. You end up looking over your shoulder a couple of times, expecting the rider to show up and start blasting again, but nothing eventful happens. Everyone returns to campus and crashes for the night.

You make good use of your morning, finishing up some coursework and getting started on assignments. You feel... Normal again. Despite your new secret persona, you feel like you're back to your normal life, at least for a little while. Doing homework like this reminds you of the good old days (Like, half a week ago,) when things were simpler. By investing this time into your studies, you make sure that you catch up on the syllabus. You've managed to undo the damage that the Mirror World has done to your education for this week, and you feel like you're no longer in danger of falling behind!

While figuring out a reply, you grab your stuff and head outside. You need to go shopping today. Your backpack got absolutely destroyed, so you'll have to get a new one. Today, you don't feel like walking, so you get into a bus and decide to fork out the fare. You might as well search for other Monsters, now that you're dedicated to this life. If there's anything dangerous around, you'll want to save people from it.

You consider getting some form of transport for yourself. Without any vehicle, getting around is rather inefficient. You don't have enough for a motorbike, and you can't just ask Rico to ferry you around everywhere. Maybe a bicycle?

Speaking of Rico, he's texted you to ask about the situation, and if you're doing okay. It's up to you whether to tell him everything about yesterday.

Soon enough, you reach the mall. You get yourself a late lunch and head off to look for cheap backpacks. While browsing the news, you come across a report of another mysterious disappearance here. Like most of the ones around town, it was a locked-room disappearance. Someone vanished right out of a changing room. You know it's likely a monster that could be around the mall.

You decide to head to the place to visit. The incident happened two days ago, and you can still see a couple of people who are clearly reporters bothering the employees. The manager is talking to them, looking rather heated as she speaks. It's a small, casual clothing shop; not one that can take bad publicity for long. A couple of customers inside are clearly looking bothered by the reporters shitting up the place and milling around.

You text Rico while you walk, filling him in on everything. Your contract, your battle with the roach, and the Rider who shot at you. He replies animatedly, asking for details and responding with overwhelming enthusiasm. You smile as you read his text.

"Dude, you're like, a superhero now. And I'm the only one who knows?? Am I your sidekick???? :D"

Putting aside that for now, you quickly write back to Gubby, asking your question. He replies faster this time. Seems like you're both online now.

There are those who want to kill the others. Be wary of ANY Rider you meet."

=====

While you think on it, you check through Bernard's phone. By now, you've seated yourself outside the clothing store to watch. You've also gotten yourself some nice gloves, so you don't leave prints all over a missing person's phone. You navigate the cracked screen and manage to figure out his password. It's his birthday.

His last contact is 'liz<3'. You know he had a girlfriend off-campus, and the timing is about 12am. That should have been roughly when the others saw him off and split up to go home, after hanging out that night. Seems like he called her before the Monster got him.

You look towards a storefront. Massakaze is there, accompanying you silently and just watching. You bristle as you look at your own monster, reminded of what it did.

A quick lookup shows her name. Lisa Martin. You double check his social media. Yeah, seems like a match.

As you do your research, however, your stakeout seems to bear fruit. You spot a familiar brown coat walk into view. It's the broad-shouldered detective from Wednesday! The one who you already know is a Rider. If he's here to investigate, it means that he's likely hunting the monster too.

Mess around with Bernard's phone some more. See if we can see if Lisa mentioned him being strange on her social media or something. Maybe look up her address, so we could meet up with her to ask her some more questions, in case she's involved at all on a deeper level.

You hunker down and keep your distance. He probably won't recognise you so easily. And from here, you can watch what he does inside the store. He pushes through the crowd of reporters, parting them like the red sea and ignoring their protests. Once he flashes his badge, the manager stops complaining and lets him into the store. You struggle to see much more, but you definitely spot him entering the changing rooms.

Gubby replies after a brief moment.

You're familiar with phones, obviously, but you were moments from making severe mistakes in snooping through his stuff. You were only saved by the sudden thoughts popping through your mind. Of course. If you were to go digging through his girlfriend's Instagram story, especially on his phone, he'd show up in the viewers. He, as a missing person.

The same applies to viewing his messages. She'd obviously have texted him afterwards in concern, when he didn't show up. You don't quite consider that viewing her texts would display them as read. However, you have the presence of mind to outright remove his sim card, ensuring that none of this happens. You're safe as long as it's disconnected from the internet.

With that out of the way, you start looking through his messages. It's nothing out of the ordinary. He was living normally up until he was abducted, and Masakaze was stalking you for most of that time. It only changed tracks and happened to attack him when you became unavailable. His behaviour wasn't particularly weird either.

His last few messages are him drunkenly telling Lisa that he reached home safe.

The remaining ones from her are some variation of her asking where he is, giving concerned calls, and panicking about his disappearance. You sigh and stare at it.

Your stupor is broken by the sound of sharp whining. A Monster. It's coming from nearby. About one floor down, you reckon? You look down the railing, trying to spot whatever it is.

Action:

> Run to a mirror and HENSHIN, with the intent on chasing it down immediately.
> Wait and do nothing. Stay in the real world, see if you can spot the Detective doing anything.
> HENSHIN first, go into the Mirror World, but hang back to see if the Detective goes for the Monster first.

You get up and run to the bathroom. Fortunately, nobody is around. After checking the stalls and making sure they’re empty, you stand in front of the mirror.

You throw your hand out in front of you, calling out: “HENSHIN!”, before sliding the deck into place. Once more, you become Kamen Rider Tsuru. You leap into the mirror world, taking your ridecycle into- Oh no. Oh no, not again.

Your bike emerges through the glass and smashes the flimsy plastic stalls and porcelain bowls. It spins out, coming to a stop against the wall, amidst a pile of rubble and leaking pipes. You cringe at the mess you’ve made, but take comfort in the fact that nobody will have to see this. It’s not like something like that would hurt you either.

You quickly head out of the bathroom and follow the source of the sensation. Massakaze is somewhere above you, flying over the mall. You don’t bother with the elevators. Instead, you take it upon yourself to leap straight over the railing and jump from the third floor to the first, without being hurt at all. It’s exhilarating. You then leap to the second, faster than you could have ever gone when taking the stairs.

The source of the sound is coming from a Greek food place. The kitchen, to be exact. You burst through the doors, passing empty tables and hallways, just in time to spot another creature standing before a shiny oven, about to reach through. It turns to look at you.

This Mirror Monster looks a bit stronger than the trash mob that was RockandRoach. It kinda looks like a cow, with a big ring through its nose and a body covered with bronze plates. Steam rushes from its nostrils as it turns to face you. In close quarters like this, you can probably do more damage to each other. But you’ll have a lot of trouble calling in Masskaze or performing a finishing move.

Yeah, we need room for summoning. Though it probably will benefit from more room as well, giving it space to build up speed for a charge. We'll have to stick close to it, not let it get the chance.

No worries, QM.

> Something else? (Write-In.)

Lead it to an area cluttered with furniture and elevation changes, like the food court or fountain areas. It could build up momentum in the more open spots like that, but having room to maneuver will benefit us. As well, we're not exactly built for slugging it out in cramped quarters, something that would benefit the armoured cow. If we can stay in areas with disruptive terrain and obstacles, it could help our nimble asses more than it, hopefully.

82 vs 74- SUCCESS!

You get the monster's attention by tossing a plate at it. It shatters over its horns. The creature yells in rage and chases after you, barrelling through the kitchen and knocking cutlery aside. It dents the various machines inside, and smashes through the kebab-maker on its way to you. Luckily, you're agile enough to lead it out of the store without getting caught on anything yourself. You end up leaping off the railing again and landing in the middle of the open atrium, where you turn around to face it.

The creature charges through, shattering the glass and bending the metal. It lands directly in front of you, lowering its head to charge. Fortunately, you can strike first:

You can tell that there's a new card in your deck, somehow. You had it last time round, but you didn't get the chance to use it. This time, though, you want to get some use out of this. You pull it out and examine it.

STRIKE VENT.

On it is a pair of savage-looking talons. They look rather wide, and you eagerly slide it into your Rainvisor and wait for them to appear. Some slashing gloves, perhaps?

You hear a cawing from above. Massakaze flies over, and you duck out of the way as the pair of claws slam into the ground. They seem embedded in the concrete. Upon further inspection, these don't look like gauntlets at all! Instead, there's two holes for you to put your feet into. You quickly step into them and dance around, marvelling at the ease of motion. Slowly, you raise one leg and get into fighting stance, like a crane extending out of the water. Your opponent tucks its limbs in and prepares to defend.

The Mirror Monster receives several hefty kicks. You hop forward on one leg while kicking out with the other, ripping into its carapace and tearing out a chunk of bronze armour. It roars in fury, managing to bat your foot away twice. Still, your high-powered kicks wear it down quite a bit. It charges at you and attempts to attack by swinging wildly.

It has 6d attack pools, so if we use our Dodge now it's going to have guaranteed successes on any later Dodges. And I want our best chance for dodging if it charges, so we can do the classic "make it ram into a wall and get stunned" move. If it's attacking with its arms, I say counter with our own melee.

This thing is clearly more powerful than the crappy cockroach mook you fought last night. But it doesn’t have the same agility and slippery movements that your other enemy did. While it manages to backhand you across the face and send you sprawling, you quickly pick up on its simplistic attack patterns. It’s almost like an automaton, throwing out choreographed moves like clockwork. It bellows, releasing steam from its nostrils. You see tiny licks of flame emerge as you summon your sword and counterattack.

Your blows clang against brass armour, denting it and scratching the beast up as you dance and twirl around it. By the time it finishes its flurry, it’s far worse off than you are. It sags, giving you an opening to strike yet again.

It's an even trade. You continue using your blade as the bull charges into you. This time, rather than a series of swipes and strokes, you aim to impale it with a single strike. The two of you clash, but as it nears you, you realise that you've made a bit of a mistake. It's going too fast for you to move away after trading blows. The breath is knocked out of your lungs as it impacts you, driving its horns into your stomach and pushing you all the way across the atrium. You go flying into a stone pillar, cracking it upon impact and sliding down. As you roll on the ground, the monster yells in fury as well. Your entire blade has gone clean through it, causing flames to erupt from the gaping wound. The sword emerges from its back, and it stumbles about blindly. By the time you recover, its managed to snap the blade out of itself.

Cretaurus comes right back for another charging strike. It seems to be steadily picking up speed. This one is the exact same attack, but steam rises from its nostrils in copious amounts, speeding it up as its internals rev up.

You pull open the visor and insert your card.

"LIFT VENT."

Massakaze's shadow appears high above, in the skylight. It flaps its wings, sending dual twisters sailing into the mall. They rip across the atrium, lifting both you and the bull up. The Monster is thrown around and spun rapidly, while you rise into the air and prepare to strike. Before you can capitalise on its immobilisation, however, it throws its head back. An unseen hinge detaches its head from its body, and its chest begins unfolding into various panels. You cover your face as a ball of brilliant light emerges from within, shining like a miniature supernova in its torso.

The ball explodes into heat and light, washing over you and setting you ablaze. The force of the explosion dispels the twisters from the Lift Vent, leaving the both of you to crash onto the ground. You writhe in pain, feeling the searing heat rip across your body. The bull is in a similar state of anguish from the attack, and slowly refolds its parts back together. You rise unsteadily and level your visor, coming at you yet again with a BULLRUSH (5d100-5) (-20).

Massakaze descends from the heavens. As the bull charges you, it strikes from above and slams its claws into its back, forcing it into the ground and dragging it across the concrete. Showers of grit and debris fly into the air as your monster absolutely brutalises it, ripping into its body and picking it up repeatedly, only to drop it back onto the ground. You hurriedly pat the fire off yourself, feeling your body sting and burn as you do so. It's weakened and distracted. By now, you can easily finish it off. You attempt to set a card into your deck. However, before you can make your move, you hear a familiar, yet foreign noise from afar.

"ADVENT."

A shape emerges from a storefront, like a bolt from the blue. It slams into the two duelling monsters, sending Massakaze flying off with a shriek of protest. You back away from the second monster, gripping your visor and preparing to fight this newcomer. Crap. While you're wounded too?

You quickly realise that it's not a wild Mirror Monster. You heard the visor, so that must mean it's someone's contracted beast. As you look around for the source, you hear a loud click of a revolver. Standing on the floor above you is the rider. You see him in full daylight this time. Black and brown, visor-like slits on their face, two ear-like protrusions that stick up like a doberman; it's gun rider.

He remains silent, keeping the weapon pointed at you. Your hand hovers over your deck, preparing to pull out another one if need be. The Mirror Monster pulls itself up and starts limping away in the chaos, only to be stopped by the hulking canine-beast that stands in its way.

You grab your new card and stick it into the visor. Just in time too, as the rider flicks his wrist and pulls the trigger. It's not a vent card, but it still packs a punch regardless. It's almost reminiscent of a cowboy duel, with the both of you going for your weapons in sync.

"GUARD VENT!"

Instead of summoning an object, your visor springs open. The umbrella spins in your grip, deflecting the first two shots and sending them ricocheting. Your arm is knocked back by the force, however, allowing the other bullets to strike you. You wince and hold the shield in front of you, anticipating another volley of shots.

New card acquired!

> Guard Vent (3d100+10) x1 (Each success counts as two, and can remove additional failures if not disrupted by special conditions.)

=====

A howl sounds out from deeper in the mall, as his Mirror Monster chases Cretaurus down. The battered umbrella closes up and you stare up at the rival Rider. He lowers the gun somewhat, and you take another moment to examine his appearance. Black and brown armour, the dog ears, a huge revolver, this is definitely the one and only other Rider you've seen. The only question is whether he recognises you. He can definitely recognise Massakaze.

"That Monster. How long have you had it?" He barks, keeping the gun at his side.

Yeah, this is Lestrade. Was 90% sure already based on the look of the Rider we saw that was probably him, now I'm convinced. Only got turned away from that idea by him shooting at us last night. Christ, Lestrade, have some thinking skills. We were being hunted by a Mirror Monster, we had a deck, you told us to make a Contract, and then a Rider contracted to said Mirror Monster showed up. Seems like an obvious chain of events.

You nod your head, still gripping the visor. You only have one card left, and it's your most powerful attack. He's completely unharmed, but you feel like maybe you can at least hurt him enough to get away. That is, if you need to fight back.

"Just a few days. Only just contracted it."

He doesn't put the gun away, but he seems to relax somewhat. The rider tilts his head upwards, as though sniffing the air. You hear battling from further in the mall, then silence. You can't quite remember how long you've been in here for, but you're sure you at least have three or four minutes before the limit is up.

"Telling the truth. Okay. That makes this a bit harder then."

The Rider twirls his pistol. You get the impression that he's still deciding whether to start firing at you again.

"I told you, didn't I? That if you became a Rider, we can't play at being friends or comrades."

You straighten up, making a small effort to brush the soot and debris off your suit. Without making it too obvious, you look around for any cover. Pillars, fountains, any barriers. The escalator is a short distance away, and you can definitely reach it in just one leap. It'll provide good enough protection from this distance.

"What do you mean?"

"This isn't some superhero sidejob. We've been given these decks to fight for something we want. Eventually, I'll need to kill you to survive. And vice versa."

"Yeah, well, Massakaze was going to eat a woman if I hadn't contracted it, and was probably going to eat me, too. So I think I still made the right call."

"The right call... Maybe so. I can't fault you for wanting to act instead of waiting to be eaten, or waiting for someone to save you."

"Look, who told you all this? My deck was just left for me on my doorstep, no instructions. Was there supposed to be a recruiter or something?"

He lets out a sharp laugh, glancing to the side and stowing his pistol away.

"Then you're not even in this to chase something of your own? Just pulled in because of circumstance."

You slowly relax as he holsters his gun.

"Yeah? What of it?"

"... It's strange, is all. I know of... two other Riders. And we were all approached with our decks. You're the first I've met who doesn't know of the Rider War."

You hear metallic footsteps approaching. The Rider's beast approaches, with no dead bull trailing behind. You feel a flicker of irritation, shared by your crane. So this guy just came in, started shooting at you, scared off your quarry, and didn't even finish it off?

Lestrade's Monster is a large creature, big enough to ride on. It looks rather standard for a monster. Similar to Massakaze, it resembles an animal more than the weird half-humanoid ones you've fought. Metal armour covers most of its body, and a glass-like visor sits atop its muzzle. Red and blue lights glint on either side of its head.

"So, you've never met the one who gave us our decks? The creepy woman."

"Nothing like that, no. I-"

You almost talk about Gubby. But you remember his message, and the fact that this guy is still untrustworthy. Just because he's put the gun away doesn't mean he isn't a danger to you. You know next to nothing about the Detective, other than the fact that he's willing to kill.

"What's your name, anyway?"

"I'm certain we introduced ourselves."

"No, not that. I'm Kamen Rider Tsuru. And you?"

"Ah. I'm Kamen Rider-"

Mainly because of the flashing red and blue lights and visor than anything else. It's not upright or anthropomorphic, so naming it after the French words for Werewolf seems a touch out of place.

"Ah. I'm Kamen Rider Garou."

As if in sync, your Mirror Monster howls, throwing its head back and letting out an echoing cry. You smirk a little as the young lady in front of you flinches. The smile is soon wiped off your face, though, as you consider what it means to have a brand new rival.

=====

> You are Mitsuko Da Silva again.

Your hands begin sizzling, and you look down at the disintegrating material. Damn, out of time. You turn towards the bathroom, still glancing back at Garou intermittently. He makes no effort to shoot you, fortunately. He turns away as well and marches off, only giving one more passing comment as he makes his exit.

"The next time we meet, there's no guarantee it'll be civil. Be prepared to fight anyone you meet, or be prepared to die."

He disappears into the clothing shop. You glare at his receding figure and return to the bathroom that you entered from, moving past your rideshooter and examining the window. Once you make sure there's nobody on the other side, you leap in and return to the human world. As usual, you're disoriented by the change in direction. Left is right, and right is left again. You dart into a stall and lean against the wall, examining your injuries. Bruises mark your body from the repeated impacts with the bull. Luckily, the Rider suit stopped most of it. The burns, however, have reached through. They're not as bad as they could have been. The skin is red and raw, like you've been scalded by hot water or sunburnt badly. But it's nothing that'll permanently scar. Putting some aloe on it should make it feel better, but this is gonna sting for a while.

The monster has escaped, you're hurt, and you've encountered an... Enemy, supposedly? He did shoot at you twice, and it doesn't seem like you can just approach him in the real world and ask for info. Gubby is your only source if you want to find out more.

As you handle his phone, a thought springs to the forefront of your mind. You've had this with you for quite a while. If anyone like the police was tracking it, they'd see that it was just sitting around in your block. At the very least, it's not like findmyiphone is so precise that it can be traced to your room. Holding on to it any longer is going to make it more and more incriminating. You don't even have any alibi for where you were when the phone was with you, and you have no good reason to have this since his room has been locked the whole time. You stare at the device like it's radioactive. You need to decide what to do with it before the situation gets worse.

Any tracking would have been cut off once you plucked out the Simcard, so there's that, at least. You could either throw it away, or bring it somewhere, but that'll require explaining to them why you had a missing person's phone.

Action:

> Destroy the phone and hope for the best.

The earlier you come clean, the better. And you can’t do this alone. You decide to consult your friends for help. It’ll come off a bit suspicious that you decided to climb in through his window. But he’s now officially a missing person, so a friend taking some drastic measures shouldn’t be too insane sounding. You text the group and send a picture of his phone.

After the initial confusion, where they ask you what the hell you’re doing with it, you mention climbing in through his window after discovering that he was officially missing. Sandra is a little confused that you went ahead and did that without even telling them first, but as you’ve always maintained a bit of distance from the group, they just chalk your motives up to a bit of eccentricity in the end. Kaya requests that the whole lot of you meet up somewhere on campus to discuss this, and to bring the phone to the police if necessary. The others agree, and are rather insistent on it. After all, they don’t know what you do: that it’s already too late for him.

Action:
> Go for the meetup today, and try to play along. (Will require deception rolls to stay near them without raising suspicion.)
> Hand them the phone and go elsewhere. (Suspicious, but ensures you can’t dig yourself into a deeper hole.)

The group decides to meet up in a food court on campus. You're the last to arrive, and you awkwardly wave to them as you approach. As you get closer, you can see that they've clearly been talking already. Remy looks really worried now that it's clear he's actually missing. Finding his phone abandoned can't be a good sign. Kaya raises an eyebrow as you head over and set the phone down.

"Hey, Mitsuko."

You remain standing instead of joining them around the table. Sandra stares up at you.

"Uh, are you gonna sit down?"

You shake your head and push the device forward.

"I... I actually have some stuff to do. I can't be here long, I just came to pass this to you guys. Can you text me later about whatever you decide?"

"What? Hang on." Kaya protests, standing up as well.

"You can't just walk off like that. You said you crawled in through his window, right? Don't leave us hanging. At least tell us a bit more about that. Why'd you suddenly decide to do it?"

You shuffle on the spot awkwardly. It seems like they won't just let you drop it off and bail like that. Or, well, it's not like they're going to physically stop you. But that'll impact your relationship and raise suspicions.
