The Great War rages, but in the skies above the Atlesian continent, an Age of Heroes dawns....

>Have Crow hit the engine and keep the hell away. You'll have to do what you can.

You grit your teeth in frustration. This was a Hasty pickle you've gotten yourselves into. Still...there was no way you could expect Crow 1 to take on enemy fighters in his state, you'd have to do what you could on your own....

"Crow", you say over the radio. "Get the hell out of here. I'll do what I can, but you need to peel off!"

It wouldn't be long now. Above you, the Fonck's keep up their rapid descent. They smell blood in the air.

*What? You sure, I could-*

"I've got it", you say, putting on a confident front. "Nothing I haven't handled before!"

*You say so...*, Crow returns, his Z1 angling off. At least now he'd maybe put thoughts of dogfighting aside. Now, it simply came down to...

....your own efforts!

'tatatatata!'

'vroooooooooom'

'tatatatatataatat!'

The Merovians come in like bats out of hell, and with guns spewing death. However, you still manage to do what you do best. The first bogey you evade is with a series of mad barrel rolls, unpredictable and agile. He zooms past you. Then his buddies come in.

They are in a triangular assault, and you know the best way is to get inside or around their formation. With a flick of the stick, you bolt up, and they follow. Smiling, you cut back, opening fire as one plane falls for it.

'thudthudthud'

Hit! The bogey wildly veers away in panic as the cannon impacts him, likely as much from shock as real damage. The two remaining bogeys move to engage you from opposite sides, and you think fast.

Shrugging, you bank on your rolls again, choosing one Fonck and doing a roll over him as he charges, the unorthodox assault causing the two to break away for fear of mauling each other. They then break off and rejoin their fellows a bit away. The leader, whose plane is painted half indigo, spins for some reason.

Then the radio buzzes, general.

*Hahah. This is good luck for us! The Bloody Red Angel of Koneralnd all on his lonesome. I will get a promotion for this, Monsieur!*, their lead calls over, in a thicc accent. You frown.

"For running away?" you scoff.

*Honhon. No Monsieur, for taking your head!*, he says, as he veers back into the attack. His croneys follow behind.

hm.....you are mindful that an infinite firefight would probably favor them, given your more limited ammo...

" 'The Bloody Red Angel of Konerland'. Huh. Well you made me sound right scary enough", you say over the radio. "But I'm Huzaran, fyi Frogman."

The radio buzzes back.

*And do you burn with shame, fighting for your conquerors?*, he asks.

You shrug.

"Not particularly. They have their off days."

*And Do your masters keep you on a tight enough leash? Now come here! I'll clip your wings, Chimera!*, the enemy lead snaps.

The radio suddenly shuts off, and you find yourself in a fight for survival once more. Looking around, you had to try and draw the Merovians off from this area. There was too big a danger they'd be tempted to heading at Crow 1....

Much better they come for you.

The Udet was fast enough that you think you can outrun them while pulling off this trick...

>1, 1, Enemy CRITICAL
>Crow 1 destroyed

Things didn't quite work out that way.

'Vroooooooooom!'

As you speed off, the Fonck initially make to pursue you in whole. That was the plan. Unfortunately, Crow 1 chose that moment to be heroic. Or at the very least, try and be heroic. He did try.

'Tatatataatatata!' Go the machine guns of the enemy craft as you fly about. Most you manage to dodge, the Udet's speed and your own reflexes proving a good match for the enemy numbers.

Then you see smoke in the corner of your eye, smoke moving towards you. For a moment, you think the Fonck you'd raked with the cannon is making a new go at you, before a sharp realization.

"Crow! Stay out of this damnit! I told you to let me handle it!", you bark. This was madness. His Z1 wasn't a fighter to begin with, much less in it's current state! It was just asking for trouble at this point!

*To Hell with that!*, he replies. *I'm gonna even the odds! This old-whoooo!*

He breaks off suddenly, as two of the enemy Foncks, the leader and one other, suddenly cut back from their pursuit of you, and their only target is clear to see! Oh no!

"Crow! You need to-- gaah!", you yell, as bullets buzz by you, grazing the area around the cockpit. Spinning off, you manage to change your path and come out ahead, sending a spare round or two towards an outflown Fonck. You think you glance it, but it's friend is still on your tail! The one you'd hit before, he must be angry with you.

Then it goes to hell.

'Tatatatatata'

'Tatatatatata!'

Crow 1 never stands a chance. He gets off one desperate salvo, charging wildly ahead to try and break up the enemy attack against you, but he misses. Instead, the enemy planes tear him apart.

*I can't-'tatatatata!'AGHHHHHHHH!*

The Z1 was already hurt bad, and another direct hit from a Fonck causes the whole front to erupt into smoke and fire once more. Then the Enemy Lead gets off a perfect shot, and the Z1 goes spiraling towards the earth, killed. At this height there was never enough time for a chute.

The Z1 strikes the earth, and detonates in a ball of flame.

"CROOOOOW!!", you yell. Oh shit, was he...shit!

>Try and call the Itch. It's dangerous, but the situation calls for it!

Watching your wingman die is a surreal feeling. You hadn't known Crow well at all, but even then, he'd still been your responsibility. At the very least he'd gone out fighting, and he'd chosen that path...

You shake it off, and feel a slight scratching in the back of your skull.

You can practically feel the rage burning inside you. It would be dangerous indeed to try and channel the Itch in a Such a state, but you don't think you have any real choice. Its the best option. The only option to be honest.

You need the boost. And you want it.

And with bullets flying around you, you lay back and try and bring it up by force. Easy now Stanislaw...

>Bogey down

It takes a moment of focus, before your mind changes over from the clawing and pinching. But you grab that rope of control and yank. Hard.

And your mind floats in that sweet jelly, before the clarity of purpose hits you. Tainting it is a sense of anger that you swallow down, without it overwhelming you. You are in control.

And you know what to do.

'Vroooooooooom!'

You take your Udet into a wild spin as the Foncks come in hot, their guns blazing. Their painted up leader heads them up, and he's clearly desperate to make an end of you. But he won't. No.

[Down. Quarter turn. Speed.]

Jolting down, you barely avoid his mad charge that comes a split second later, like a lancer trying to spit you. His companions try much the same, each switching up the angle a bit.

But you are in control.

[Spin. Pull up. Fire!]

You roll away from a barrge fired by two of the enemy planes, pulling up diagonally as you exit. You are smoke and open fire quickly, and note that the initial plane you already wounded is partially gutted by your cannon fire.

The Fonck cannot withstand the close range barrage, and it goes sliding along the ground trailing flames, before being split it half by a boulder with a crash. You pull away, mind racing.

You flicker your eyes to your ammo reserves, and you probably have enough for a short while. But it's a matter of either ending this now or fleeing with what gains you've made!

Away from you, the Foncks are coming back around, clearly intent on having a headlong joust.

You go.

>2 Success!
>Stanislaw is at Moderate Damage
You charge ahead, speeding forwards torward the foe. They mirror you, racing up, and intent on coming to blows. Under other circumstances, you'd have been happy to oblige them. Not this time.

Just as they open up, you jerk the plan upwards, speeding over the top of the Foncks. Unable to react quickly enough, they simply speed ahead under and past you, as you initiate the next phase.

With a flick of the lever, and a smile, you hit a well executed immelman, bringing your plane into a U-turn as you now become the hunter. Realizing their error, the Foncks try to speed off.

Their error.

[Engine. Three degrees. Fire!]

'Thuthudthud'

The cannon opens up, thoroughly ripping into the enemy Lead, and sending him veering away in panic. Smoke leaks from the hole you've opened. Then you turn your attention to another Fonck, sending a few rounds it's way. You connect, and it follows the Lead, rolling off to avoid anymore punishment.

The third plane though....

The Fonck cuts back as you move up, expertly pulling off the risky maneuver. For once, you cant react in time and the plan delivers a spray onto your wing as it gets behind you. Annoyed, you speed up, and the enemy fighter pursues...

You glance down. Only a few passes worth of ammo left.

[Up. Around.]

Instead of a slow down cut back trick like the bogey had tried vs you, the tactic your Udet falls into is different, but just as simple. Instead of slowing down, you simply speed up! And go up and back!

And over!

'Vroooooooooom!'

The Udet roars a battle cry as you find yourself cutting a sharp loop in the sky, speeding upside down over the Fonck tailing you before coming back up in a full loop. The enemy plane doesn't react well, the maneuver having caught them by complete surpise!

[Fire. Conserve rounds. Fire!]

'Thudthudthud'

A quick three round burst rattles out from your cannon, tearing the bogey a new one. It desperately seeks a way out, but you manage to stay on its tail easily enough. Smoke billows from the craft, and once again the power of Dmitri's pet project proves itself.

Meanwhile, the other two Foncks make a fierce attack run against you. The Lead Fonck comes roaring past, his guns blazing angrily. But you easily roll off, avoiding the worst. Likewise his companion, much more cautious, attempts to take you by the side, failing as you speed away.

The two Foncks fall into a turning chase with you, not quite on your tail but not outside shooting range either. On the other hand you hold a good spot vs the enemy plane before you....

You check the ammo gauge. You estimate enough rounds for a good 3 or 4 full attack bursts. You could work with that.

You nervously lick your lips. This was far from an ideal situation, but all the bogeys were hurt in some way. Granted, some more than others, but a part of you wants to strike a blow for Crow! If you can get behind your pursuers, you can likely cripple them-or better. Of course, these guys werent exactly slouches...but if nothing else, you have your ability.

And so you try.

>Bogey Down
>Bogey 3 Critically Damaged

[Break right. Fast. FASTER!]

Your Udet pounces away from the chase, veering off at a sharp angle as the two Foncks in your rear move to respond in their own way. Your forgotten victim starts to circle around, but he's off your mind for now...

'Tatatatatatatata!'

[Up! Left! Roll!!]

You bring the plane into a nauseating(but not for you), roll, bringing the plane back up and to the left as the Foncks open up, their guns aiming for your life. It works well, and their inferior craft either overcompensate or don't try to compete.

The Lead is smarter, and you think he notices what you intend. As your plane recovers from the roll, you find yourself under and below them. Opening up with your cannon, you can hardly miss.

'Thudthudthud!'

The cannon rounds rip deep into the Lead's wingman, and for a moment you think he's on the brink of going down. However the leader's painted Fonck then comes to the rescue of his comrade. He desperately comes at you, making a pass at a bad angle. Predictably his shots miss, but you are forced to relent.

Then you see the third bogey, intent on having a joust with you. Smiling, you dip down till your plane nearly brushed the earth, before veering up and right at the last second.

'Thudthudthud'

The Fonck erupts into a ball of flame even before it hits the dirt, and you scan the battlefield around you.

The Fonck Lead is nursing his wingmqn protectively, maintaining a rather defensive posture. The other guy looks bad, his Fonck gushing smoke and missing a large chunk of a wing.

Your radio buzzes.

*I must say Monsieur, it seems my promotion must wait! I bid you adieu!*

The two Foncks break into a headlong flight, leaving the sky yours. You take a moment....and notice you have approximately enough shells for one more run if you desire.

*You are lucky we don't stick around!*, a voice calls over the set. The other Fonck, you suppose. *Real lucky, Huzaran!*

You swallow the desire for revenge and instead pick up the radio piece.

"Ah yes. The scary pilots who can only kill crippled birds. Very brave. I'm shivering."

The radio buzzes back.

*Temper, Angel. Next time, they'll be more of us. You were lucky this time!*, the Fonck Lead sounds off. Maybe it's in your head, but you think you sense a bit of fear. Apprehension maybe. You

You frown, patience running thin.

"I'm serious", you warn. "Get the hell-"

*Sacre Bleu! We're going. We're going. Merci....and sorry about your friend. He died brave, at least. Salut.*, the Fonck Lead says, before speeding of with his crippled wingman.

You watch them go, before bringing your Udet about, and aiming for the Valley exit. It was still a bit of a flight, but you should be good to go. Now you just had to get out of here before more trouble show up.

As you pass over the wreckage of Crow 1's Z1, you frown. The battle rush was dying, and with it the effects of the Itch. A slight headache was present as a side effect this time. But you shake it off.

This was gonna be really shitty to explain....

"Sorry Crow...", you murmur, flying past.
---
Oh good, more planes.

As you near the exit of the Huffendor, you spot a few planes in the distance. Four planes, in fact, but you can't really identify them yet....

Granted there were only a few possibilities. It could be a Merovian Flight, given the numbers, but it also might be your friends. But in that case, shouldn't there be six? Three pairs of two...

"Come in, aircraft. This is Chimera 3. Come in? Anyone there? Over."

A few seconds pass before the radio let's off a crackling noise.

*Da, This is Sergei. It looks like you made it back on one piece, Stanislaw. This is good. Now we are only missing Braun*, Sergei calls over, voice smooth.

Looks like you'd bet well after all.

*My friend! You should have seen me, those frogs did not expect Luigi Pe-*

*Where is Crow 1?!*, a voice breaks in. *Is he coming behind you? Shit he didn't blow the engine did he?*

.....

You thumb the piece. Tongue rasping over your lips, you think for a second. And you sigh. Deep.

"He didn't make it. I'm sorry", you say. What the hell else are you supposed to say? Shit. It just hit you again that the guy was dead. Dead. From good. Shit.

*He didn't--WHAT!*, the other man yells.

*Requisat en pace...*, Luigi mutters.

*That's not...he popped a chute, right?*, another Crow asks nervously. *I mean, he's gone down before and...right?*

There was no use lying. Or trying to delude yourself honestly. You'd seen the crash. That low, there was no way he'd ever manage to escape. Simple facts...

"There wasn't enough time. I'm...I'm sorry....", you answer. "But we completed the mission. The tower--"

*DO YOU THINK I GIVE A DAMN ABOUT THE FUCKING TOWER!?!*, Crow 3 erupts spectacularly. You flinch.

*Calm yourself man!*, Sergei snaps.

*Hey fuck you Count! You didn't lose anybody! We've been together since the damn academy! Creator...I just...shit..*

The tension in the air is palpable, even from within your craft. You feel a sense of foreboding over the whole thing. Finally, after gathering your thoughts, you pick up the piece again.

"He died brave, 3. He was already wounded when he went down. One the way back, a patrol chased us down. I sent him off, but..he came back. He tried to help. That's how it happened. I don't...Honestly I don't know if it was brave or suicidal...", you say, shaking your head. It was pointless.

What had he been thinking?

The radio buzzes back at you.

*'Brave or Suicidal'. Heh...why not both? He never did fear getting shot down, our boss. I guess..I guess you can only live like that so long...but I suppose..I suppose it's how he'd want to go. I just..I need a minute*, Crow 3 replies. You hear a loud click as he ends, and his Z1 floats a bit off.

A younger voice picks up his place.

*You got them that did it, though, right?*, Crow 4 mutters. *Them that got the Captain? Right?*

You frown. You couldn't very well describe the bizarre truce near the end. But you could tell most of the truth.

"Half of them are eating dinner with the Devil. The rest flew off with their tails between their legs. With my ammo stores the way they were...", you say, veering off. That wasn't really a lie. It had influenced your decision if nothing else.

*That's...good to hear. And...and it wasn't for nothing. We know how important this mission was. Really, we do. It's just surreal, honestly. Too many fucking dead people in this war, shit*, Crow 4 replies.

You can practically feel the depression. It passes to you, and the sight of Crow 1 going up in fiery explosion hits you. There is an swelling of guilt on your conscience and you have to voice it.

"I'm sorry. That's all I can say. I was his wingman. His safety was my responsibility and I wasn't good en-"

*No*, Crow 3 interrupts. You blink.

*Believe me, Huzaran. You start down that road you won't ever wanna pick your head up again. It's the Merovians who'll answer for this. Believe me...*

His words come as a kind of relief, but you still slump back into your cockpit. There had to have been some way that could have ended differently. Had you not been forceful enough? Should you have just raced out of there hell for leather, instead of your stealthy approach?

"Hmph...", you grunt. And keep flying.
---
By the time you finally reach Baldir Base, the Crows had split off, with Crow 2 having rejoined around the same time Captain Braun had. You'd almost been worried before seeing the two planes, battered but alive, on the horizon. You'd breathed a sigh of relief.

*This is Baldir Base*, the staticky voice over the ground radio calls out. *Welcome back Chimera. And good job.*

You suppose...

In your standard pattern, the planes of Chimera Flight make their descent, with your Udet touching down onto the strip, as you remove your goggles.

Almost as soon as you touch down, a very excited looking Dmitri swaggers his way over to you. A half eaten sandwich gripped in one hand, and a well worn notebook in the other. Or well, you think it's a notebook. Yeh. Battered cardboard and paper monstrosity that it is.

"Hah! My young friend!", Dmitri says with open arms, before taking a bite. "Dmmdri musht kno ov reszhlts!"

You blink as his heavy accent is deepened by a mouthful of bread and ham. Wiping his mouth, he leaves a smear of grease.

"Da, sorry. Dmitri asks, what of results! I see you got into scrape yes? How did she perform, my design?", he asks. "Tell Dmitri true, it did not malfunction?"

>It packs a hell of a punch. But that ammo shortage hurts Dmitri. Can't you up it?

You rub the back of your neck. The thing had its advantages sure, but also its drawbacks. If you were being honest you probably preferred the machine guns if only for the fact they were less likely to go dry on you in a long fight.

"Well...the thing sure packs a hell of a punch. That much is for sure", you say. Dmitri gives you a toothy smile and nods his head.

"Da da. It delivers quite the blow! Those rounds? I adapted them from anti tank rifle bullets! Well, me and the boys. Dmitri, he has tried to tell the Supply Ministry--"

He catches on that you aren't completely enamored, and scratches his chin.

"Alright. What is problem? It did not jam again did it? Many apologies if so!"

You wave him off.

"Nah, nothing like that. It's the ammo storage. Awfully light don't you think? I nearly ran dry during my fight. Doesn't really matter how hard it hits if there's nothing to shoot out, right?", you say.

Dmitri nods with a deep sigh.

"My young friend, you have, how do you say, hit hammer on nail, da!", he states. "This ammo issue, it is difficult. Only so much room to work with. Too many and balance of machine is affected. Danger of a hit cooking off. Too few..."

He shrugs.

"Well, you're a smart guy Dmitri. I'm sure you'll figure out something. How about we put the Mg's back though, huh?", you ask.

He nods in good spirits.

"Da da. It will be done. You have good day!", he says, before returning to his duties. A group of crew starts to take your plane around. You hear a voice clear behind you, and turn about.

"I see Dmitri had you testing his toys!", Braun says with a smile. There is a bandage wrapped about his head, but the small bloodstain doesn't seem to serious.

You nod.

"It's a strong weapon. Not too sure he's fully realised the design though. Storage issues, apparently", you say.

"Hah!", Luigi laughs. "My friend, if Luigi Pesani had his choice, he would go to Dimitri and ask for an even bigger one! Haha!"

Sergei rolls his eyes.

"Ahhh yes. The amount of havoc a big ale could wreak with an ordinance version. It tickles the mind it does", he says drily.

"Friend Sergei, my mind is not ticklish!"

".....right", Braun breaks in. "We should probably report to Ernst. He'll wanna hear this from our own lips. With the installations destroyed, he'll wanna proceed as soon as feasibly possible."

You nod.

"Yeh. The airbase thing right?", you ask. "Probably gonna be a rough one."

Sergei scoffs.

"Rougher for them. We will bury them."

"Uhuh. Right, tough guy", Braun smiles. "Let's be about it then."
----
Inside the HQ, a few of the familiar faces give your team congratulations. Not that you feel particularly celebratory right now...but still.

As you near Ernst's office, Braun stops.

"Sergei, Luigi, how about you go ahead in? We'll just be a second", Braun says. Sergei looks curiously at you, but you just shrug.
>>
>>4824426
"Hmph. Don't be long", Sergei says after a moment. "Ernst's charming self is too much for me. Luigi, come."

"Si", the big man says, following after. They keep on down the hall. Braun turns to you, before placing a hand on your shoulder. He rubs the back of his neck.

"Rook...this business, with Crow 1. I know you didn't know him well, but I know the feeling. Well. Too well...actually..", he says, looking over your shoulder at the wall.

"Sir...you really don't.."

"Heh. I'm not much of a confidante I suppose. I just want you to know it isn't your fault. These things happen, and..."

You just stay quiet. It's a bit hard to put your swirl of feelings into exact words right now. Guilt? Anger? Some sadness mixed in there? A bit of it all?

You hear Braun sigh.

"It's just one of those things, Stanislaw. It comes with the job...but...", he stops, and you feel his grip tighten.

"Sir?", you ask.

"It doesn't make it any easier. It should never BE easy. Watching a friend die. Too much of that nowadays. You stop feeling for the dead though, and you stop feeling for anything. That can lead...to bad places", he says. You raise a brow.

"What's that supposed to mean sir?", you ask. He gives you a sad smile.

"Let's just say you need to strike a balance. You care too little, you become cold, Rook. That's no way to live. Care too much..can't let things go...", he turns his eyes towards the Flight Controller's door.

Ernst? What did Ernst have to do--

"The people in Rosenberg, they think it's one big glorious display of patriotism. Crow won't ever be buried. He won't go home. But his widow will get a medal, so that makes it fine, I guess....", he says thinly. You sense a whole lot of bitterness.

"At least he died fighting sir. He tried to help me out. Plus the mission...he'll be a hero once the papers get word", you state.

Braun releases your shoulder, before adjusting his glasses.

"Yeh", he says shortly. "Yeh. Whole lotta heroes these days Rook. Now come on, let's get back to work, eh?"

His sudden shift in tone catches you a bit off guard. But you shrug it off as Braun just being tactful. He probably didn't want to unload his own issues on you. For a moment, you nearly pry into his past again, but seeing as he shot you down last time, you don't see any point.

And, with that awkward ending, the two of you make your way into the office.
----
.
"---ull panic. It's beautiful. I've flights going for bridges and roads almost hourly now. It's beautiful, they are blind and deaf and they know it", Ernst finishes. Chimera Flight had gathered around Ernst's desk, as the blonde man worked with Ingrid to map out various attack zones.

"Excellent work everyone!", Ingrid beams. "You were really on the ball this time! N-not to say you aren't usually, it's just um, just that this time you were part--"

Ernst raises a hand.

"As she was saying, good job. For minimal losses you have severed the coordination between the Huffendor and Lothren. They will be down to roads and birds now...", he veers off, taking a smoke.

"Tell me then, Flight Controller...", Luigi starts, a wide grin under his shades. "When do you unleash us to strike the killing blow! Luigi Pesani shall carve his name into history in that valley!"

As if to emphasize, he thuds his chest mightily, and Ernst glances up from the map, tapping his cigarette. He smirks.

"Aren't you the one who said we had to hurry the plan along?!", Sergei growls. "You can't just nap--"

Ingrid waves her hands wildly.

"W-What the Flight Controller means is that he has been working very hard! You shouldn't be so rude!", she protests. She gets a surprising mix of defiance and nervousness on her face.

Sergei is taken aback visibly, and to your intense shock doesn't fire back. Ingrid is still puffed up, like some kind of angry poodle. But no. Instead he simply shrugs and let's it go.

"Nyet. Forget I said anything."

Ernst clears his throat, though there is a look of vague amusement on his face.

"Right. Now then, rest assured you will.be the first I tell when we launch phase two. I have some final preparations to make. Last minute updates and the like. Take it easy till then. I can't have you all keeling over and ruining my master plan...", he leans back, cigarette in mouth.

"Riiiiight", Braun says. "Well, Master Planner, if that's all..."

Ernst gets a frown on his face.

"It is..but...come by here again later. Say around midnight? It seems the moths are back. And worse than we thought"

The comment is so random and bizarre that you almost chalk it up as one of your boss's eccentricities. But Braun gets a rather serious look behind his glasses.

"How bad 'worse'? ", he asks softly.

"Bad. Alright then, off you go. Stay sharp out there. I need you to not die!", he says cheerfully. You all salute.

"Yessir!"
---
Once you exit the building, you realize how late it is. Not quite night yet, but that pretty pink sky above sure is telling. So is the exhaustion. It had been a rather emotionally taxing mission, and that had translated to physical stress.

Tacking on a forced Itch didn't help that.

Luigi starts bellowing a big old belly laugh the minute the doors shut behind you.

"Ahahaha!", he laughs. "The little bird, she showed you, didn't she friend Sergei! Hah!"

The Count narrows his eyes.

"I'll have you know there were any number of responses I had in mind. I was simply caught off guard by her...outburst. Besides, I do not fight with women, it is unseemly for a gentleman", he sniffs.

"Uhuh", Braun says. "You poked her Ernst."

"The man deserves more than a poke"

"Ahhhh come on Captain, pretty please?", you ask. He looks you over for a second.

"Promise I won't tell!", you say, holding a hand over your heart. Braun cracks a smile before having a chuckle.

"Bah cut that shit out. Sergei and Luigi are right there anyways. Hmmm...aw to hell with it. This CAN'T get around, you understand Rook?", he says.

"Sure thing sir! So what's the--"

"Nono. Not here...", he looks around before gesturing towards an overhang that clouds the ground in shadow. It's fairly out of the way.

"Hah! Stealth!", Luigi says loudly.

"Da, nothing suspicious about openly plotting in the shadows...in broad daylight..brilliant plan, Braun", Sergei remarks. Braun shrugs.

"Well if you don't wanna know--"

You shake your head.

"Ignore him", you say. "We wanna know!"

You shoot Sergei a sour glance, but he just mutters to himself.

Braun nods with a smirk.

"Thought so. Follow me", he mutters. You and the rest of your team set off as nonchalantly as possible across the Airfield. Soon enough you reach your destination. Braun leans against the wall as he cleans his glasses.

"Alright, enough dramatics", Sergei says. "Let us hear this and be done."

"Alright...", Braun starts. "As you are aware, the brass is convinced there is a rather well placed spy in our ranks. You'll all remember how the Merovians read our patrols minute for minute. And managed to nearly take out Baldir doing so."

You nod.

"Right. So some new info came up?", you ask curiously. Braun nods, and gets a serious look.

"Oh yeah. 'Well Placed' may be too lenient a term. It happened again. Not just in the air either. Merovian forces have begun a second branch of their general offensive. They've stormed fortifications at Hachendell and Jezzeberg", he says, grimly.

The gears in your head turn a second. Then it hits you. You'd seen them on that map!

"But those are towns along one of the old supply routes! We need them to keep Lothren cut off!", you say. The hell?

"It gets worse. Nobody saw them fucking coming. Total intelligence breakdown, and under the circumstances, it's being kept as quiet as possible. We have to assume worst. The Traitor is someone high up. High up enough to be able to supremely fuck us over, and not get caught while doing so. It's one hell of a pickle, I'll say that", he finishes.

"And the plebian signal speech you used back in the office?", Sergei asks. "I trust that was related to this dire news?"

Braun nods.

"Behind the scenes, me and Ernst have been working with Pappen to try and put together a working picture. The guy and his 'Hats are pieces of work, but they are smarter than they look. I have to imagine something came up. Creator, and here I thought it couldn't get any worse..."

An eerie silence settles around you all, before Luigi let's out a roar of outrage.

"Baaah! When you find this man, my Captain, you point him to Luigi Pesani! I shall crush him like a tiny--"
>>
>>4825522
You throw a hand onto Luigi's arm.

"Whoa whoa!", you say. "Ease up there big fellow. You're gonna pop an artery. Geez."

After a few seconds, Luigi just breathes.

"Apologies my friends. But it makes me very angry! Many good men have died because of this traitor! Unforgivable!", he shouts. You can agree you guess. But Luigi looks fit to strangle someone.

"Hey I'm angry too Luigi", Braun says. "But there's only so much we can do. Whoever it is, they're getting brazen. Eventually they are gonna fuck up, and then..."

"Bang", Sergei states. A grim smile decorates his face. Creepy. But ok.

"Bang", Braun nods. "Now, I've got some bases to cover around here. Captain business. I'll keep you updated on the spy thing, assuming Ernst isn't overreacting."

"Could he be?", you ask.

"Ernst is a lot of things. But not a spaz. Still, I better be going. You lot take care", the Captain says, before walking off. Behind you, Luigi clenches a fist.

"I must hit something. To the gym with me!", Luigi states. With nary a goodbye, he begins to walk off as well. Ah well, let the big guy punch it out you guess.

"Well Sergei, I guess that leaves you and-Sergei?", you ask, looking around. But the Strelkayan is nowhere to be seen. Huh. A goodbye would have been nice, but you suppose he needs his alone time. Sergei is not exactly a hugger, as you've found.

Shrugging, you decide to turn in. Not much else to do. And you need the rest. Mind made up, you make your way to your barracks...
---
You occupy yourself with your thoughts as you march on down to your...room?

"Hey, Stanislaw right?", a janitor asks, stopping you in the hall. You don't recognize him. But you guess the place could use a touching up every now and then. You nod, stopping.

"That's me....Mr..."

He waves you off.

"Oh nono. I'm just a fan you see. Heard about that mission earlier! Good job!", the janitor says, leaning on his broom. You feel a bit of pride swell up.

"Oh yeah? Well hey, nice to meet you to!", you say. Wow, your first real fan!

"Hey, you keep up the good work ok?", the man says, gathering his bucket up. "I've gotta head out, but you're room is nice and spiffy!"

You wave as he leaves.

Huh, what a swell guy!

Continuing down the hall, you reach your door at last, and open it. You head inside to admire the clean up, and....

...And your eyes are instantly drawn to the envelope on your desk.

You blink.

Cautiously, you pick the thing up. It's clearly high quality, with little frills and a big fancy seal made of wax. They had used gold, and the mark was a big, stylized 'B'.

Well this was curious. You had gotten mail before. Letters from Anna or Dad, but they had always been inspected first, on entry. And so had your replies. That had been annoying at first, but Braun had assured you it was standard procedure.

This though was unbroken and it had been left in your room...

>Well you kind of have to open it. Let's see what's inside!

Well, you could hardly NOT read the mysterious letter. Especially with that fancy old seal fixing it. Where would your sense of adventure be! With that decided, you break open the seal...

And there are two letters! Well one isn't really a letter, so you set it aside for now. The other though...you look it over.

'Dear Stanislaw. I do hope you remember me, Helena Bormann? First, I only think it proper I should thank you again for rescuing me from those B--a-*st***-'

You snort as you realize what she had scribbled out. And you keep reading.

'--Those Heathens. In any case, congratulations on your success! I had a feeling you would do well. People are starting to notice you. Then again, with that paint job, who couldn't! Also, I do hope you do not mind, but I've taken it upon myself to patronize you to my Uncle. He isn't the easiest man to sway, but I think he is impressed. Or, well, perhaps almost impressed! At the very least I'm sure you could make a wonderful impression. He is a very important man as you know, and likely,(between friends), to be more important soon! Very hush hush that. To get to the point though, there will be a upcoming Gala of sorts. Held at Castle Zelger, date included below. All manner of notables will be present, dignitaries, soldiers, etc. But for some reason, not the Sturmwing's up and comer! I did some digging, and it would seem your team was uninvited by that fat...man. You know him. I worked my magic though. Included is an invitation to the Gala. Do not feel obligated to attend, although I am sure you deserve a break. My Uncle and I will be in attendance, so you can take the chance to get on my Uncle's good side! Bring your best uniform! Stay safe until then.
--Helena B.

You lay the letter down. Huh. Well it was nice to hear from Helena again, you guess. A bit weird, being out of the Blue like this. But you'd take it. Then your frown. Hoffman.

"The Fat Man" can only be Hoffman. What a spiteful petty little ass. You pissed in his cereal so he locks Chimera out of some fancy party. Well, good to have Helena in your corner you guess.

Hmmm...you pick up the other letter. Well invitation really. It's what you'd expect. X is hereby invited to yadayadayada. Rich people talk and all that.

You lay it aside. You'll deal with it in the morning you suppose. For now you hide them both under your pillow. Can't be too safe these days!

"...so let me get this straight", Sergei says quietly at breakfast. "Somehow, you, plebian from the back of Huzara, were invited to a party for the rich and powerful? And by Dietrich Bormann's niece? And I'm not invited? Criminal."

"He is a charming fellow, our Stanislaw!", Luigi interjects. He proceeds to shovel the last of an omelette into his mouth.

You rub your neck.

"I mean first, rude, Sergei. But yeah, that uh, that about sums it up. Found it in my room like I said. Unbroken. Which I know is like against the rules--"

"I don't like it", Braun says, setting down his cup of coffee. Sergei chuckles darkly.

"How shocking", he says.

Braun gives him a look before turning to you. He taps the table right in front of you.

"A few reasons. One, the fact you were smuggled a letter on a Sturmwing base is a breach of security. I know I'm not exactly Mr Rule Book, thank heaven, but I'd be curious how they pulled it off. Either someone here is working for the Bormann's-Bad-or some random underling managed to enter the base. Both are uh, disturbing", he says.

You chew on that for a few seconds, before a thought hits you.

"The janitor!", you exclaim. The others give you odd looks.

"Uh, what about him?", Braun asks. You wave your hand.

"Nono. Or, Fake Janitor, I guess. There was a guy in the barracks last night. Get this, he Cleaned. Our. Rooms", you whisper, leaning forwards.

"Uh, friend, is that not what janitors do?", Luigi asks. You shake your head with a sigh. Pinching your nose, you try again.

"Except he looked new, or at least I'd never seen him before. That could be our guy", you say. Braun gets a frown on his face.

"Alright, well, that's suspicious. Are you sure it wasn't one of the ground crew in a stolen uniform?", he asks.

You think on it.

"Well...I can't say for sure. I don't know everyone here, but I'm definitely sure that I've never seen him before...."

Braun nods, satisfied.

"Ok. Now for the other reason. Nothing good comes of House Bormann", he states. Ah, this again. Well you hadn't expected anything less. "This seems innocent enough, but...."

Sergei crosses his arms.

"It's this bit with Marshal Hoffman that worries me. That canker sore took time out of his day for petty revenge. I do hope this does not become his habit", he growls.

Braun adjusts his glasses.

"You leave that to me", he states. Then he gets an eerie air about him. "And Stanislaw..you are gonna wanna hang onto that invite. Burn the letter though."

You raise a brow.

"Uhhh, sure sir? But why?", you blink. The captain takes a long swig of his coffee, draining it. Then he hunches in.

"Let's just say that it may do you ill to be associated with Bormann Corp in the near future. Food for thought", he says, rising.

"Is this about the new info Ernst had for you?", you ask.

"In a way, maybe. We've had conflicting information", he says vaguely.
>>
>>4826527
With that rather ominous conclusion, the lot of you finished your breakfasts. You were just about to head off for a friendly chat with Dmitri, when Ingrid enters the cafeteria. Looking about, she finally spots your group and waves.

"Well, looks like Ernst finished his powernap", Braun says. "Come on boys, let's see what he cooked up now."

"I can smell the burning buildings already", Sergei remarks. Luigi gives him a solid thump on the back. The Count flinches in annoyance under the blow.

"Hah! There is good spirit friend Sergei!"

For your part, you finish the rest of your coffee quickly. Your sleep last night had been..restless. None of those bizzare night..terror...vision things, thank the Creator. But this thing with Crow...you shake it off and remember Braun's advice.

You had a job to do.
---
"Ah, always good to see my men up bright and early", Ernst says as you enter his office. He is only partially in uniform, wearing a thin shirt above his pants. A cigarette is smoking in his fingertips.

You glance down at the map laid on his desk. Various markings demonstrate what can only be a plan of attack towards the enemy Airbase inside the Huffendor.

"Stage Two at last?", Braun asks.

Ernst nods as Ingrid takes her place beside him.

"Just so. Based on our scouting and intelligence, we achieved exactly what we had hoped. The Huffendor is scraping the barrel just to stay in touch with Lothren, which gives us our opening...", he says. He gets a quizzical look on his face.

"Excellent news!", Luigi exclaims. But beside him, Sergei cocks his head. He doesn't look to happy.

" 'But' ", he says. "I am sending a But here."

Ernst shrugs, before spreading his hands.

"Guilty as charged. Ingrid, please update the map for our good pilots. Please."

Smiling, Ingrid grabs a pointer, and begins to move various icons and tokens around the map. You see several new ones pushed into the vicinity of Lothren and the Huffendor. On your own side, several also beef up your side of the siege lines.

"What you are seeing is a rough approximation of enemy assets in the Huffendor and the surrounding area", Ernst says, tapping the map. "It does look like you boys kicked a beehive. We kicked them back a generation in terms of communication and they compensated with more machines."

Sergei narrows his eyes.

"They suspect us. The spy?", he asks.

Ernst smiles.

"Hardly takes a spy for them to know what we are about. The next logical step is an attack on their Airbase. With that gone, the Huffendor can hardly be kept safe. So, I brought you here to propose some options", he says.

"Options, sir?", you ask.

"That's right. Ingrid ran some numbers with our analysts. We could hit the base in broad daylight for one. That would make things easier in an aerial sense. We aren't exactly swarming with night flying units after all...but..."

"...The Frogs would expect us. And they'd be deployed in force. Could get messy", Braun finishes for him. Ernst nods.
>>
>>4826569
"While a decisive battle is the ultimate goal, I don't intend to fight it until the Merovians feel pressured into a full committal...and we need this victory to persuade upstairs to dedicate a final shift in resources", he says.

"So what's option two?", you ask. Ingrid steps forwards and moves some more of the pieces around. A bat for one.

"Option two is a bold undertaking. We would be launching a large scale night attack into the Valley", Ernst states.

Braun gets a grim look.

"Ernst...you just said we don't have night fighter resources..."

"True enough. But we do have one. Vampire Flight is willing to accompany us on Loan. And we have plenty of skilled pilots who could handle it. Best of all, the Merovians would never expect it".

"Vengeance for their own night raid...", Sergei says, scratching his chin. "It could work. But those pieces..this isn't a small operation by any means."

"Smaller than the daytime option however. We'd be looking to slip into the valley with a formidable but efficient strike force. We hit the Airbase, destroy it, and soar out. That's the plan", Ernst finishes, taking a smoke. He looks around.

"Let's hear your thoughts."

Well, as much as you disliked the idea, the night attack had clear benefits. It would be one hell of a shock to the Frogs, that's for sure! Your mind is made up.

"I'm for the Night Assault", you say. You see Braun look skeptical and you shrug.

"Ernst is right. Unless we wanna risk the Merovians blowing their tops early, it's the better option", you say.

Sergei nods in agreement.

"And they won't see it coming", he says. "It will strike fear into their hearts and panic into their minds."

"Bah! I say let us do this thing head on!", Luigi barks. "It is no good to hide in the shadows! We must fly proudly."

"I'm in agreement with Luigi actually", Braun says. "I'm no fan of just rushing the base in broad daylight, but there are too many risks with the night plan. We aren't trained to run a full operation that way."

Sergei scoffs.

"Need I remind you we did just fine in the last night battle? We repelled the Merovians. They failed", he states confidently. Braun is unimpressed.

"Fine? Sergei, they came this close to taking out HQ. If it hadn't been for some timely reinforcements..."

"..Reinforcements that are available now Captain!", you say. "We'll have Vampire with us on point. They can guide us in!"

"Rook, this is like asking a vet to patch up a human. They can do it, but they're just as likely to make a mess. I'd be fine with it if we were better prepared. If we had more time to secure night pilot assets--"

"We don't have that time", Ernst says calmly. "Rollout of the Super Artillery is due in exactly one week. And Hoffman is insisting it's already functional, so even that delay is shaky. He's been lobbying hard. Damn hard. And it's all Von Feldmann can do to push him off. We can't look like beggars. It's now or never."

Hmmm...

"Well, it should not take a week to do our plans, Si?", Luigi asks, scratching his head. "We fly out, destroy their base, then have the big fight as last step!"

Ernst draws deep and puffs a smoke ring.

"I wish it were that simple. I really do. But there's always a chance the Merovians act erratically. Some unforeseen factor. We'll need every day we can get. Once the airbase is gone, we'll do everything we can to force their hand. We have to hope that's good enough...", he stops, thinking.

"Now...what are we deciding?"

Guess its time for you to lobby!

After a bit of further debate, it finally comes to a vote. You only hope that you managed to sway Ernst to your side.

"Day", Braun says.

"Day!", Luigi exclaims.

"Night. Let us end them", states Sergei.

And you of course...

"Night!", you say confidently. With that a tie, you all turn to Ernst. The blonde man gets a little smile on his face. Then he shrugs slightly.

"Night", he says. You see an uncertainook on Braun's face, but he doesn't try to fight it. He just nods. Luigi much the same.

"Excellent", Ernst says. "I want you all to take it easy. Go ahead and get any arrangements you need with Dmitri. Once you are needed, be ready to go. We will launch the mission tonight."

"Tonight?", you ask. "Will the others even be ready sir? Won't that take time?"

Ernst shakes his head.

"They were informed yesterday that we were going forward with this. Informed...discreetly mind you. The plans were encrypted, and I listed every name who touched it. If we are betrayed, I mean to know by who. That's for damn sure..."

"So you think that's a risk?", Braun asks.

Ernst shrugs.

"Probably not. I've vetted most of these people, and the traitor is starting to smell...like medals. If you get my drift not some letter opener", he says. "That will be all...but before you go, here this..."

He stands up, eyeing you all.

"There is every possibility that Foudre Flight will be in the area. We know they run night patrols occasionally, and they are damn good at them. If they meet your force, you are NOT, I repeat NOT to pursue them outside the mission area. Try to limit engagement time to a minimum. I'm not saying don't take the shot if you have it...but eyes on the prize. Boucher is the dessert, not the entree."

"And I trust you've given the Wolves the same lecture?", Sergei asks. He picks up a little token from the map. A wolf head.

Ernst sighs.

"I'm entrusting you with the task of not letting Paul get himself killed. You aren't babysitting, but if Boucher shows up and he loses it, rein him in. We need him alive. A list of other planes will be sent around before launch. Are we absolutely CLEAR on the Foudre policy?", he ends, looking around.

"Very good! Be about it!", Ernst says.

"Yessir!"
---
The day greets you outside.

"Alright. Now that we are good to go, I'd advise you lot to make any final preparations. We've got till nightfall. Or maybe longer I suppose, depending on when Ernst calls us up", Braun says.

You nod.

"I'll see Dmitri about my ride Captain. Might be a few things to discuss", you reply. Sergei shrugs.

"My plane is already excellent. It suits me just right. I have no need for petty adjustments", he says haughtily.

Braun chuckles.

"Then what ARE you gonna do?", he asks.

"I am going to sleep. As I'd advise you all to do as well. You'll need your energy for the mission. It's too important to risk for some petty thing", Sergei replies.

"I am thinking I will take a nap too!", Luigi says with a wide grin. "Friend Sergei, you will awake me when the time comes?"

"Do I look like a maid?...fine. Just don't do that thing you do. With the punching when you wake up and all", he sighs.

"It was one time, friend Sergei! You never let Luigi forget this!", the Aldanian protests. "He is very sorry!"

The two of them say their farewell and wander off towards the barracks. That leaves you and Braun. The Captain claps his hands together.

"Righto! To Dmitri we go", he says, stepping off in that direction. You nod and follow after.
---

When you show up, Dmitri is putting the finishing touches on you and Braun's Udets. It always makes you happy to know the big Strelkayan is a fast worker. He waves a big meaty hand at you, handing a brush back to a worker.

"Ah, good Captain Braun and young Stanislaw!", Dmitri booms. Brauns lip twitches a bit at the greeting.

"Young? And what am I, some wizened sage?", he remarks.

Dmitri winks at him before laughing.

"Come come, tell Dmitri what you need. Let me guess, you are here to see me about your craft? I have received word this mission. Bold and important! Unfortunately, Dmitri has no night planes in stock. Not common! But there are choices nonetheless! Come!"

You look them over.

You nod towards your standard vehicle.

"The Udet, as usual, Dmitri. Old Lady's never let me down before. Might as well bring her in on this", you say.

"Not a bad choice", Braun adds. "Don't wanna shake things up too much before a big one like this. And a plenty good craft at that."

Dmitri nods, satisfied.

"Da, and...Stanislaw, will you be wanting the cannon? There is plenty of time to switch your set up around before tonight. Destruction of the base is a goal, yes! Perhaps you need heavy firepower?", he asks, scratching a cheek.

"Keep in mind, I'm sure Ernst is dispatching ground attack units with us. If you want the cannon, that's your business Rook, just keep the drawbacks in mind", Braun says, as a crewman comes over to him with a chart in hand.

"Ah, thanks", Braun murmurs, taking a look at it. "I'll catch up with you tonight Rook. Just get that plane ready."

Well, it certainly had drawbacks. But you'd be lying if you said it didnt feel great to have some real firepower. It did pack a punch to be honest.

You smile.

"Put the cannon on, Dmitri. Go big or go home I suppose. We aren't meant to get into a long fight anyways", you say.

The chief mechanic gets an excited look on his face. You made him a happy man.

"Haha! Da! It is oiled and calibrated my friend. You should have no issue!", he says loudly. Then he turns to some crewmen standing by.

"You heard the pilot, Da? Begin installation. We move quickly, big mission tonight! Chop the chop people!"

Normally you'd leave them to it, but with nothing better to do you lean against an old Voss and watch them work. You've always been kind of curious how they manage to pull this stuff off. Watching a master at work as you will.

You'll catch a nap after....
----
*-nd remember, we go in and out. We stay long enough to make sure the airbase is put down for good. Then we exit all nice and smooth like. Keep that in mind!*, Braun says.

The moon is high in the sky, and the birds of Chimera Flight are making their way towards the Huffendor under cover of shadow. Stage Two is well and under way, but first you need to meet with the rest of the attack force.

"Yessir", you say. "The others will know the same, right? I mean, I'd hate it if...uh..."

*A bunch of morons blew the mission to hell?*, Sergei adds, tactful as ever. Well you weren't going to put it that way, but you guess it summed it up.

*No worries on that end. Ernst knows his resources. Unless Paul decides to go on a merry chase, we should be fine. And I think he's learned to contain the impulse...hopefully*, Braun sighs.

You nod. The Werewolves had much fighting spirit, but impulse moderation wasn't exactly their strength. Granted, if you trusted anyone other than Chimera with your life up here, they'd probably be your second choice. You think they were a good pick for the mission.

*Luigi still does not like this. To fly under the moon is one thing, but in a valley such as Huffendor, with so many twists and turns...*, he veers off.

*Nervous big guy?*, Braun asks, surprised.

*Hah! Luigi is never nervous. He worries only for fellow pilots! You leave it to Luigi Pesani, strongest man in Aldani, and he shall not let you down!*, he replies. You detect an effort at fronting.

*Don't tell me your afraid of the dark!*, Sergei scoffs over the set.

*Luigi fears nothing. The Dark fears me!*

As you ponder the logic of that statement, you think you catch some dark shapes moving under the moonlight. It's hard to make out..but...

Braun must see them too.

*Chimera Flight here. Name yourselves.*

In turn, they rattle off.

*This is Count Vlak. Vampire is here. Good night to you Chimera*, says one voice in an aristocratic tone. The others follow in suit.

*This is Thor 1. Merovia has called down the Thunder. My boys are the boom.*

*This is Ferret 1. The Line Flights aren't gonna miss out on this. Sturmwing's cant have all the fun.*

*This is Crow 2. The Murder is coming along tonight.*

And finally...

*Alpha here. Werewolf is with you.*

It's quite a gathering. And not insubstantial in power. If this was what Ernst had sent out for the "stealthy" plan, you wonder what he had meant to deploy in the daytime version? Granted, you uh, hadn't exactly had time to--

*Crow, you weren't on the list*, Braun murmurs. *Where is Woodpecker?*

*Indisposed. We'll be filling in*, Crow 4 replies, calmly. You raise a brow. A last minute change of plans?

*Well...good to have you. Have you gotten a new pilot already?*, Braun asks not ungently. You couldn't quite make them out yet, but if they were down a plane...

*No. There wasn't time. We are what you have. Is that an issue?*, Crow 2 growls.

*No. No issue. Anyways, good too have all of you here. But we need a plan*, the captain states.

*Plan?*, a Ferret asks. *Don't we already have one though? We head in, make the frogs blow up! Simple!*

*I believe me meant specifics*, Count Vlak replies. *That is a rather broad plan*

*Exactly*, Braun says. *Now, I think we have a couple options on our deployment...*

After a rather contentious debate, you all finally settle on a strategy.

*Alright. We're all set then. Stanislaw, when we reach their base, you'll head down with Crow and wreak what havoc you can. The rest of us will maintain our standard positions*, Braun declares.

*And we will drop our bombs from up high!*, Thor 3 states. *They'll never see it coming!*

A thought hits you.

"Sorry to ask, but will you guys even be able to target the HQ properly from your normal height? In the dark?", you ask. Thor were good at their jobs, but the flying conditions weren't exactly top tier.

The radio buzzes back.

*Oh that's not so bad*, Thor 1 replies. *Once the attack starts, they will have to start shining the search lights. We will just aim in the middle then!*

You nod. A sensible plan. Alright.

*Be advised, the only people here with extensive night fighting experience is Vampire. From here, we'll defer to them. Count Vlak, would you assume point?*, the Captain calls over.

*Certainly*, Vampire 1 replies. Veering into the front of the formation, the planes of Vampire Flight are as dark as the sky around them. Each bears a black bat on a white roundel, except Count Vlak, who wears the colors reversed.

*Gentlemen, you are in good hands. If you would be so kind as to follow me? The night is something of our specialty*, he says, smoothly.

*The key here is to make yourself as small as possible!*, a younger voice calls out. *That means engines low except in an emergency. No fancy flying, and do what the Count tells you!*

*I heard they were running patrols. Those aren't gonna be an issue?*, Wolf 4 asks. His Voss goes soaring by as Werewolf take up their position out right.

*We've run patrols before*, Vampire 2 recounts. *This is just a bit bigger. Just follow our lead, and the valley will burn...*

*Uh...sure*

*Just keep in formation. You know the drill, Vampire. Let's find the enemy. Plan Night Hunter. Report back.*, Vampire 1 says.

*Roger sir*

*Aye, m'lord*

Two of the Vampire Udet' break off, flying ahead of the group in different diagonals. Soon enough they Varnish in the shadow.

*And where are they going?*, Alpha asks.

*To be our tripwire, Wolf 1*

And thus you set off into the valley. You just gotta be careful...

>2 success!

Things go rather smoothly for the first half of the flight. Shrouded in darkness as you are, you guess it would take a bit of luck for the enemy to locate you. Although granted, it was also a matter of luck for you to avoid them. Vampire seemed to consider it an art.

Speaking of...

The sight of approaching fighters out in the gloom puts you on edge. Could the Merovians have spotted you? Then they speak to you all.

*This is Vampire 2. We spotted Merovian patrols due Northeast. If we keep to the western half of the valley, we may avoid them. If they try and circle around, we may be able to get past before they show*, comes a raspy voice.

*Valley wide sweeps is it? Very well. Everyone, stay on us. We'll thread a hole and get past in time. I advise running engines a bit higher for a bit. We need to make sure we are gone", Vampire 1 says.

*And redirect to the northwest! We will continue North when safe!*, Vampire 3 states. *Can't risk an engagement!*

The radio buzzes back.

*Isn't this just wasting time?*, Crow 2 pokes. *What if you missed something?*

*Who plucked your tail, birdbrain?

*What did you just-*

*Enough!*, Vampire 1 booms. *This mission is only time sensitive insofar as the withdrawal after the attack. We head northwest. Follow us, everyone.*

*Cheery little team we are*, Ferret 1 chuckles. *Merovia trembles.*

*They will...*, Sergei mutters.

Alright, so far so good.
---
Issues began to emerge once you were well into the center of the valley. Very..bright issues. One moment the night dark was sin, with the only light coming from the moon.

Then...

*LIGHTS!*, Someone yells. Sure enough, spotlights begin to beam up into the cool night air. Their beams are like golden guard dogs, sniffing about for Konerlander fighters.

*What the hell!*, Alpha growls. *Didn't you Bats tell us this way would be clear!*

*It was when we looked, ok! This wasn't here before*, Vampire 3 says. You can hear frustration in his voice.

*What use are they?*, Ferret 1 wonders. *Would they even be able to tell they weren't just spotting their own people up high?*

*They must be compensating for the Patrol gaps*, Vampire 1 states. *I imagine when the Patrols are on this side, they would kill the lights. Likely there is another set in the East. Any planes at that point wouldn't be friendly. We simply have to adapt.*

*Your suggestion?*, Braun asks.

*We slow and look for a pattern. Once we see it, we bolt. That's our best shot. We can't very well withdraw east...we'd head right into the Jaws of a patrol...*

The lights shine bright.

---
It takes a short while, but eventually a gap in the light pattern opens up. One by one, the planes of the special attack force move on, slowly, in the gloom. Then it comes time for Chimera Flight to pass by, hopefully unseen.

Waiting....

*Go now! Go go!*

Gunning the engine, your Udet jolts forwards, avoiding the glare of the searchlights below. You wipe away a bead of sweat from your brow. Just like that it was over. Alright, that's a win. Now you can--

*SHIT! SHIT!*, Someone yells over the radio. *They got me!*

Your head jerks to the side and up, to see something that sends a chill down the back of your neck. Sure enough, a pair of golden spears of light have focused on one of the bombers from Thor. He had been a moment too slow it seems.

Well this was bad.

*Damn it all!*, Vampire 1 growls, his calm apparently forgotten. *Set your engines to full power! We must do what we can now! To the airbase! All ahead!*

At about that moment, more and more search lights break from their standard search pattern. They track wildly across the sky, finding targets from all of the flights. You know what comes next.

'WeeeeeeeeEEEEEEEwoooooooWEEEEEEwoooooooo!!!!'
'AwoooooooOOOOOOOO!'

Below, the search crews turn the alarms on, and even up here the shrill screams the machines make registers somewhat. Disrupted radio communication or no way the frogs back at base would miss this now. To make it worse, it seems to be spreading down the valley way.

Well shit.

*Stay together!*, Thor snaps. *We can't get separated. Listen to Count Vlak. You aren't scared of a few lights, are you?!*

(Thud)(pop)(thud)(pop)!

Below and around, some light AA fire begins to come up as you rush through the wall of lights. It's not particularly well concentrated however, and it seems to be lacking truly high power stuff.

*Should we go higher?*, a Ferret asks.

*Negative*, Vampire 2 says. *If we do that we waste time, and you lot will need proper ground markers. We stay level.*

You veer to avoid a light, and watch as the golden beam passes by, cutting into the shadow like a knife in butter.

*In any case, the plan remains*, Braun calls out. *They know we are coming, but that won't matter. We have to see this through. Let them try and stop us!*

The radio buzzes.

*The sum is greater than the parts*, Wolf 2 offers. *We're here cause we can do this. And Command knows it.*

*There's the spirit!*, Ferret 1 says. *We can all die together! Hah!*

Well that was certainly one way to look at it.

You are briefly tempted to make your way down, and really rain some pain on the Meorovian guns. That cannon you installed definitely was well suited for such work. But....no. No. You had fairly little night flying experience, and thus you needed to stick with the plan.

You grab the set.

"Loud and clear Vampire. Let's get through this in one piece", you say, before giving it all she can take. Judging by your mark, you shouldn't be too far off now.

*Excellent. If there are no objections? Very well, stay on us. If we encounter enemy fighters, strike craft should continue to the target. The base must fall.*

With that, the strikeforce flies on but beneath you all, the Merovians keep up the barrage....

It's not too hard to dodge the AA fire on the way, thanks to the speed and agility of your plane of choice. Plus, the Udet let's you avoid the worst of the light ups. It's smoothe sailing for most of your people. At least, well, mostly.

A bit of shrapnel scores on the side of a Thor, but it's only a very minor thing. The planes are too tough to be seriously worried by that kind of hit. All in all, your attack force makes good time.

You can only hope it's good enough.

--

And then, after some more flying, you crest a rise and see a collection of spotlights further into the valley. They are clearly abuzz with the news of your intrusion. But if you keep up the pace, you think you can get this done before all of their reinforcements can return from patrol.

Or at least, that's the idea.

*There it is*, Vampire 1 states. *Chardon Airbase, the Merovian's foothold in the Huffendor. And it looks like they expect our company. Let's oblige--*

*M'lord!*, a Vampire buzzes over the radio. *We've enemy night fighters from the east! I'm picking up...it's a flight. Not the entire wave yet. But they're coming in hot!*

*Bah, pathetic!*, Sergei says. *We will sweep them from the skies!*

*No time*, Vampire 1 says. There isn't--*

*Bogeys!*, Vampire 4 says, as his Udet comes buzzing in from his outer scouting, and from the northwest at that. *Sir, it's the Merovians. We have Jezails launching from the base and coming in at our approach!*

*Desperation*, Crow 2 growls. *That's what this is. They are trying to slow us down, even if it means sending them to die in those rustbuckets!*

The Jezail was theoretically a very obsolete aircraft, but as you knew from personal experience, obsolete didn't mean harmless. You tighten your grip as you remember the dogfight that had pressed you hard in the attack on Baldir. Those pushers still had spunk.

*Regardless, assume defensive formation! But do not slow down! We carry on! Forward men!*, Vlak says, gamely.

*Someone's gotta handle those fighters...*, Braun tuts. *Any volunteers? Quick, now!*

Hmmm...time for some initiative?

>You will keep with the ground attack group as planned, while the other fighters handle the threat

You keep silent, knowing that you are not well acclimated to night duels. And besides, your loadout favors the role of strafer for this mission. To say nothing of the plan you'd helped cook up. It goes against your hunter's instincts, but you decide not to fly off and engage.

In your place, others step up.

*You boys go ahead!*, Ferret 1 says. *You leave the flank to us!*

The leader of the Ferrets sends his Triplane into a veer, as his Udets follow behind him. Soon enough, they vanish into the gloom.

*Good hunting!*, Luigi calls out. A few moments later, you see Alpha's Voss roll past you, followed by the rest of his pack. They hit their engines and storm off towards the location of the Jezails. It's clear then mean to be the ones to head out and engage them!

*Werewolf Flight will clear you a path!*, Alpha states. *Make sure you get it done. On me, boys! Let's give em hell!*

The radio crackles.

*Becker, go with the Wolves*, Count Vlak says. *Mattos, find Ferret and help as you can. See they don't get lost.*

*I'll tear em up m'lord*

*Roger and heard sir*

Snap quick, two Udets bolt off in opposite directions, to reinforce your allies. That left two Vampires, Thor Flight, the Crows, and your guys.

*And what of us?*, Sergei asks. *Aren't we also on anti fighter duty?*

*Head up and cover Thor. Their protection is a top concern. Once they deliver their payload, you will be released for general duty. I trust you are capable?*

*The rear guard? Is this some kind of in--*

*Not now!*, Vlak snaps. *A man of your breeding should know there is no shame in this. As for rest, Crow and your 3 will continue with their attack on the HQ. Myself and my second will escort. Good luck everyone. Go. Now.*

*Hit them hard, friend Stanislaw!*, Luigi roars as his Garibaldi climbs into the clouds, followed by the rest of your team. Up top, you know Thor will be dwelling.

"Much obliged big guy. You be safe", you say, as you form up with Crow and the two Vampires. The radio buzzes off again. It's Crow 2.

*Alright. Neat speech. Now then, can we get to the explosions?*, he asks sharply. *Got a little something special here.*

*Hmmm...well, there is one final obstacle in our path. There is a final cluster of AA guns guarding the approach. Once we run those, there's only the Base itself. Our target. Once we are past the guns, you won't have long to choose targets. Be advised, the timetable is stricter than ever now. I suggest you limit yourself to a single bombing run. Drop it all*, the lead of Vampire responds.

*Chimera 3? You'll be a bit more flexible. That Udet isn't made for this, but blow whatever you can. Shoot wisely and don't be afraid to empty the thing.*

You smile and nod.

"Yes sir. You can count on Chimera"

And then, the AA opens fire

'Thudthudthud!'

The AA fire explodes around you, as you charge past the firing lines. The Udet's speed again comes in handy, and you zip around the enemy attacks.

Some of your companions are not so lucky.

'ThudThud!'

*Gaah!*, cries out Crow 1. *Bastards!*

A cloud of fire springs up a few meters from his Z1, rocking it. But he keeps going, his armored craft made for this. The leader of your company also takes fire. Vampire 1 draws enemy fire until one gets lucky.

'Thudthudtatatatatata!'

You see sparks fly as a lucky shot glances his Udet. Thankfully, the angle was off, and it was low caliber. His bird stays Airborne and charging forwards.

"You ok, sir?", you ask, worried.

*It will take far more than that to bring me down, Chimera! Keep going! Go! Draw up your targets. Now!*, he cries.

*We will scythe them like wheat...*, his second growls, ominously. Ah yes

Rolling your eyes, you stay focused. Gotta think. Think fast! The Base is before you now, and as you begin to approach you can hear the screams of the sirens. Spotlights drastically dance across the sky. While you don't have a good view yet, you would be surprised if it was too different from Baldir. An airbase is surely an airbase, after all. Thoughts for later.

And your target is here.

This is the big one.

But what will you attack? You can make out some fuel storage in one corner. That would send up a boom...or perhaps you could attack the hangar? Couldn't hurt to nail some vehicles and planes. Then again...there was always the HQ of the base. But how much damage could you really do with your gun.

Or maybe wreak some plane general havoc!

>Hit the fuel reserves.

Your mind races with the possibilities. But you quickly settle on the fuel deposits. While your cannon was a formidable gun, you aren't quite sure it had the punch to go after actual buildings. But taking out some volatile supplies of gas and oil? That it could do!

Plus fire. Fire was good, right?

Your mind made up, you grasp the piece.

*I'm going for the fuel!*, you bark, before veering your plane towards the target. Below you, people scramble in the gloom, but the sheer bloody panic that existed at Baldir doesn't seem present. You suppose the forewarning helped them.

And they had time to prepare a defense.

As you soar over the base, you roll away from a series of anti air attacks. Nothing too heavy, but a number of machine guns firing tracer rounds, and some light AA tears through the sky. They are certainly doing their best on short notice.

But a little groundfire has never scared you!

As you race ahead, you finally some into range of the fuel clusters. A solid few bursts should really send these things up. And the thought that the Merovians had really messed up by placing it inside the base proper occurs to you.

Their mistake.

>Fuel Reserves: Damaged

>Enemy Fighters trickle in

You look down the range at the Fuel Reserves, and lick your lips. Then, after breathing in, you squeeze the trigger.

'Thudthudthud! Thudthudthud!'

You pull up and away at the last possible moment, sending a spray of high caliber shells into the vulnerable canisters. At this range you can hardly miss. And you don't. The cannon does its job.

'BOOM!'
'BOOM!'
'BOOM!'

In a series of fiery blooms, several of the reserves torch up, and you have the sight of seeing a supply truck picked up and tossed away in the destruction. In the fiery light you can see people running around, perhaps trying to stop the fire from spreading. However, about half the stands remain. The job is incomplete.

'Tatatatatatataata!'

You twist away as groundfire heads up towards you, getting past it with little more than a few scratches on your craft. It's a real battle now, no joke.

'BOOM!''CRASH!''BOOM!'

*That's for Reuben, you bastards!*

*Yeh, fuck you!*

You see a huge blast of flame and explosives as the planes of Crow Flight make good on their target. The side and top of the enemy HQ caves under the blasts of their bombs, having dumped their loads all in one big go. They had listened to Vampire then.

A blossom of flame sprouts from the side of the building, and Merovian personnel swarm out of it, like ants. Ants who had just had a Flight of TNT dropped on their heads that is.

However, the blast draws a lot of attention, and the AA fire reconcentrates. The bullets and blasts would have hurt normal planes badly, but the armored plates fixed to them shrug the worst.

'Tatatatatatatata!'

'crash! Boom!'

Elsewhere, Vampire's 1 and 2 swoop in and out of view, sweeping the runway and gunning at anything unfortunate enough to get caught in their sights. One truck with an HMG mounted in the back tries to make a stand, with the typical suicidal courage you've come to associate with the frogs.

'Tatatatatatatata!'

His bullets catch Count Vlak in the engines but it must have missed anything important. The Udet's counter fire sends the thing careening into a broken Fonck, flipping.

*We've company!*, Vampire 2 states, soaring over a burning ruin. In the glare of the spotlights, you can see a handful of Jezails, Foncks, and other Allied planes scramble into the area.

*We will handle them, then. They won't find us welcome visitors*, Vampire 1 states, his own Udet flying off to meet them. His wingman turns hard and follows suit, swiftly.

You hope this doesnt mean Ferret and Werewolf were being overwhelmed. Thor should not be long now though. Once they made their drops, you could withdraw. You just had to make good use of your time...

Just as you are about to pull the trigger...

'Thudthudthud!'

"Gaaaah!", you yell, veering sharply off. An explosive round detonates nearby, raking the side of your Udet. Thanks to your skills, you pull straight once more, but your run has been delayed...

'Tatatatatatata!'
*Hah! I've got-THUDHuh?!?!gah!*

In the distance, you see the firefight between Vampire and the Newcomers go sour rather quickly. For one, Vampire 1 is swarmed, but that doesn't seem to be the actual issue. With his skill, he is able to pass by his attackers...

Until you hear the unmistakable thud of a cannon, and his plane pops smoke. Your only reaction is wide eyed shock. Merovian planes didn't carry damm cannons! Hell, most of your planes didnt carry damn cannons! They were usually considered too bulky and inneficent.

Then how--

'Thudthudboom!'

*Gaah! He got me!*

One of the old pusher planes had scooted by the pair of Vampires, and with a burst had cracked open the armored plating on the side of onw of the Crows. The Z1 tries to roll away, the two awkward craft making a bizarre dancing pair.

*It's the Jezails!*, Crow 2 shouts out, as he veers in and out of sight. *The bastards are rigged for whaling! They stuck cannons on them!*

*Devilish idea*, Count Vlak replies. *But I must complement their ingenuity!*

*I'll complement them with lead!*, Vampire 2 growls, as he breaks away from the dogfight, bolting towards the dueling Z1 and Jezail. His Udet opens up at range, hitting the pusher craft. That gives the Z1 its own chance to turn the tables, and the Jezail retreats, leaking fire and smoke from the rear.

Still, the aerial fight really wasn't going as well as it might...

Then the radio breaks loose.

*'Tatatattata! This is-'(cracklecrackle), Thor 1'Tatatatatata!' We are-'buzz!'-ing in! Enemy fighters have breached the-buzzBuzz!-onna be tight! No time to waste! Shit! Back there! There he-BUZZ'

(Radio Static)

Ah hell.

*Clear out! I Re-BUZZ-ear out! We can't wait for you guys! We are dr--BUZZZZ!*

As the radio breaks off, all hell starts to break loose at the approaches to the airbase. Thor is making their big run, and with them it seems all kinds of trouble on their tails. You hope the other members of Chimera Flight are Faring fine...

*You heard the man!*, Count Vlak sounds off. *You may begin your withdrawal!*

Of course, he is saying this while fighting off a swarm of enemy fighters, and bleeding smoke badly. He doesn't sound particularly worried. His Udet stays one step ahead despite the damage. Instead he is drawing off further away.
>>
>>4842442
*What?*, Crow 3 calls over. *What about you? Aren't you coming? That's gonna be a hell of a fireworks show, Count!*

*He's got me*, Vampire 2 growls. His Udet flashes around the base, headed for his lead's position. *We will delay them and beat the blast.*

*Are you some kind of idiot!*, Crow 2 snaps. *We've got a swarm of Merovians incoming any minute! They'll kill you both! Don't be a righteous buffoon!*

There is a few seconds of silence.

*Heh. Nothing righteous about me. I'll see to my Lord. I can do that much right.*

Like that, the pair of Udets vanishes into the night, with their pursuers chasing after them like an angry mob.

And Thor keeps coming, the relentless pounding of AA guns their herald.

You are immediately filled with indignation. And regret. The image of Crow 1's fiery demise pops into your mind sharply. No way are you leaving anyone behind! That's just not how you did things. No sir. Not now!

'Vroooooooooom!'

Your Udet speeds up, going into a U-turn, as you head after them. The radio immediately buzzes madly.

*What the hell?! You too?*, Crow 4 says. *Has everyone gone mad? Sigh...*

You settle yourself and pick up the piece.

"You all withdraw. I'm going to make sure that the Vampires get out of this. It's..I need to do this. Just get to safety!", you say, swirling emotions inside.

Nobody else needs to be put in danger for this. You'll just pop over, bail out the Vampires and...and uh. You'll think of the rest directly after. Probably escape.

However, as you make your way into the darkness, you sense and then see a trio of shadows bringing up your rear. For a moment you think you've been outmaneuvered by hunters, but then a pop from an AA gun flashed a Crow head.

"Crows? I told you to--"

*We're coming with you! No arguments. If you lot want to play the half-assed hero game, so can we!*, Crow 2 growls.

"You aren't made for this!", you protest. "And Crow 4 is hurt already! You're just putting yourselves at risk! I can do this!"

*By the Creator, is this about Reuben? Shit...it is isn't it. Huzaran, now we've gotta come. And you'll have to shoot me down to stop me. Happens we all got our own reasons besides*, he says.

*Birds of a feather, flock together!*, Crow 4 sounds off.

*We aren't going away. Accept it. The Murder are your wingmen right now*, Crow 3 adds, state of factly.

After a moment of reflection, you sigh.

"Alright. Thank you Crows....", you say.

*Never mention it. Let's go bail out some Bats*, Crow 2 replies, as you speed past another angry aa position.
----

It's bad, by the time you reach Vampire 1 and 2 on the edges of the strike zone. Some burning wrecks on the ground beneath shows they have been busy, but so has the enemy. The Merovians are harrying them. And badly.

On the upside, the Frogs have no idea you are coming in. That's a bonus.

You see a Jezail coming in for an attack run and take aim.

For a split second, you focus. In the back of your mind, you know the cannon should wreak terror among the enemy light craft. Then, as the Jezail crosses your path, you let loose.

*ThudThudThud!*

The cannon rounds slam into the Jezail's propeller, ripping it apart. As the plane begins to fall it panics, flailing wildly. The Jezail slams into a passing two seater, sending them both crashing into a nearby barracks in a fiery doom.

And nearby, the Crows let loose as well. While most miss, a burst from Crow 2 knocks down the wounded Jezail from before, sending it down to the ground, where it skids and flips in a crash.

Caught off guard, the Merovians break away, retreating into the shadows. It looks like you knocked some fear into them. Vampire is in bad shape though.

*Chimera 3? The crows? I...I ordered you to--*

*Cut the crap nobleman. We aren't leaving you here to die*, Crow 2 says. *Your country has need of you yet.*

*....thank you*, Vampire 1 says. *Now then, we must retreat promptly. The bombs will drop any second. And we don't want to be caught in the attack.*

"I-Shit!", you yell out, mid sentence.

'Thudthudthudtatatatatata!'

*Gah! My wing!*, Crow 4 yells. A single aa gun mounted in a ruin lets loose in defiance of it all. A shell gets lucky and badly thrashed the Z1's already weakened side. He's in bad shape.

*That bastard!*, Crow 2 snarls. *I'll--*

*Hold your anger*, Vampire 1 says. *We are leaving. Now. There isn't--*

Suddenly, the radio sounds off.

*Buzz-is is Thor 1(cough cough), we-uhhh...making drop. Be advised, perimeter is-BUZZZZ-run, Making--BUZZZZZ. 3, 2, BUZZZ*

Above the base, you see a mass of shapes in the gloom, several on fire, as the spotlights connect at last. It seems Thor has been hammered hard.

Then the lights glint off dozens of falling stars.

They are making the drop.

*ENGINES FULL!*, Vampire 2 snaps. *DON'T STOP FOR ANYTHING!*

You don't need to be told twice.

Revving the Udet, you snap into action, hoping it will be enough....

Your Udet scrambles as fast as it can through the gloom. However, your desire to remain with your wingmen slows you down. Their planes are slower, whether by design or damage, and they may yet need your protection.

*I'm hit! I'm hit! Going down..Gaaah!*

Above you, you see a red bloom in the night sky as a HE shell makes direct contact with the cockpit of Thor 4. The front of the plane erupts into conflageration, and the burning corpse of the bomber craft falls to earth like a broken angel, trailing smoke and fire.

*We've got bogeys!*, Crow 3 snaps.

'Tatatatatatataatata!'

A flight of Foncks rushes past you all, trying to get in amongst you. With a cry of anger, you drove your plane at them, letting loose with the cannon. A single plane drops, having had its cockpit cored by your big gun. Vampire 1 let's his own bullets fly, badly hurting a bogey. The rest flee into the shadows.

But the delay was deadly.

A few second later, as you all readjust course, all hell breaks loose behind you.

'WeeeeeeeeeEEEEEEBOOOOOMMMM'
'BOOOOOOOOOM!!'
'BOOMBOOMBOOMBOOM!'

You feel the heat on on your neck as the explosions rock Chardon Base to its core, hiding it behind a veneer of smoke and fire that is all the more shocking in the darkness of the night.

And not everyone is unscathed.

'BOOOOOM!'
'BOOOOM!'

*GaaaaaGhhhh!*, someone screams over the radio, in fear. You look back for a half second and see the Z1 of Crow 4, already almost crippled, go tumbling through the air, tail aflame as his craft slides down into the gloom. His Z1 hits the dirt hard, bouncing on its belly before rolling over the ground like a crushed soup can.

*NOOOOO!*, Crow 3 cries out, but the other members of the attack force barely fair better. Shrapnel and fire scores along them as late bombs keep falling, no doubt strewn at random from the careening Thor 4.

Only you and Vampire 1, whether it be through luck or skill, manage to avoid any real damage. As you finally clear out of the strike zone you look around and note with horror the state of your allies.

The Crows are bearing visible wounds, such as dented plate and scored wood. Vampire 1 is leaking smoke at a frightening rate, his engine coughing like something unholy. And Vampire 2 has a series of pockets in his wings that make you shocked he is even afloat.

And you, somehow, someway, have barely been scratched....?

*Shit...SHIT!*, Crow 2 growls, frothing. *Not AGAIN! FUCKFUCKFUCK!*

*He...he could have made it!*, Crow 3 offers. *There was no fire...*

You bear the event in silence.

It was always possible this could happen. You knew that. If you hadn't gone back though...

...no. No you couldn't dwell on that. That way held only a void.

You had to fight for the flying.

Looking back now, Chardon Base was a smoldering wreck. Fires whipped back and forth, illuminating in a horribly beautiful way. Like a candle.

A candle filled with twisted steel and corpses...hmpf....

Your brooding is interrupted by a sudden radio signal coming over your set.

*...This..(panting)..This is Thor 1. All loads released. Reporting hits. Mission accomplished. Mission accomplished. We are heavily damaged. Down one bird. Chimera Flight remains flying. Proceeding back to base via escape route...(panting)*

Well, that did your heart well you suppose. Knowing that Chimera were all fine, or at least, not dead, was a big boost to your morale!

*We will...prosheeeed as planned, gentlemen(coughcough)*, Vampire 1 hacks. *Remain in reactive formation. (Cough)Errrrk!*

A slight tilt in Count Vlak's Udet emerges, and you frown.

"Uh, your lordship? Are you doing alright over there, sir?", you ask, worried.

*Just...just a flezzzh wound. Do not concern yo--(cough)erk!(cough)*

Before you can inquire further, a plane comes flying in hot from the gloom around the edges of your path. You nearly fall into a combat move before you recognize the sigil in the moonlight.

Before you can say anything, the badly wounded Udet sounds off.

*Hey! Vampire!*, the Ferret calls out. *We need help! The flank is overrun. We're doing all we can, but we already lost one plane..and ammo is precious. We need...wait..what the hell happened to the two of you?!*

*This is what winning looks like*, Vampire 2 says sarcastically.

*Where(cough)...Mattos...where is he?*, Vampire 1 coughs out.

*Oh, him! He's doing a real good job sir! But there are just so many...I'm sorry we couldn't keep them all back! But please!*

Your mind sorts it out. Ferret Flight should be breaking things off anyways soon enough. Unless they couldn't...in that case, they probably needed an extra push! Just to give them some room!

On the other hand...the Vampires and Crows weren't in good shape. They probably needed an escort...
---
>Ferret will have to deal with it. You certainly can't abandon your charges in their current state.

>Go help the Ferrets. Someone has too!

You feel your grip tighten as the reality of the situation washes over you. Leaving the Crows and Vamps here would make them vulnerable. However, they'd also be vulnerable if you stayed and Ferret got totally overrun. In that case, you'd be facing a swarm of fighters on your lonesome practically...wounded teammates notwithstanding.

It had to be going.

"Ferret. I'm your man. Lead on, and let's get your guys out alive", you say, turning the Udet. "Assuming that's alright with my charges here?"

*Charges?*, Crow 2 growls. *Damnit, we don't need babysitting!*

*Do what you need to do*, Vamp 2 states.

*Much obliged, Chimera 3! The rest of you stay safe! Now come on!*, the Ferret chirps, turning off.

His plane does an about face, and you follow him into the darkness. Around you, the sky smells of death and fire and smoke.

*Godspeed, 3*, Vampire 1 sounds off. *We will hold on here. Just be quick.*

You nod.

"Will do", you say, simply.

You follow the Ferret into the darkness.
---
The sight as you arrive is...less than ideal.

As the Ferret(3, apparently), had reported, it appeared his men were down a bird. The presence of Vampire 3 made up for it, but he was only one man.

And the Merovians were pressing hard.

*Captain! Captain I brought the Huzaran!*, Ferret 3 calls out.

You see a burst of light in the gloom, and a Merovian plane stutters past you, bleeding heavily.

*Well, getting jealous of the action, Chimera? The whole fiery explosions of death not enough for you? 'Tatatatatatata!*, Ferret 1 appears in the moonlight, his Triplane battered but alive, guns hot. A pair of Foncks breaks wide to avoid him.

*Cut the chatter and focus. We've more of them coming in. And-damn! I'm almost out here!*, someone spits. Vampire 3 you assume-Mattos.

*Bah, your team are spooky guys. Just, I dunno, growl at them. Or--*

Glancing down, your own ammo situation is far from ideal. Your ground runs had done their job, largely, but ammo expenditure hadn't exactly been light...

*Fun as it is chatting, can we actually worry about-tatatatatatatatata!-the issue here!*, Ferret 2 says, exasperated. *Cimera 3, please just help get us some room to disengage. We can't stay here all night! We need out!*

"Loud and clear", you say over the set....

'Thudthudthud!'

Your cannon barks into the night in a series of short bursts. A spark of flame from a damaged two-seater proves that your patience has paid off. The heavy shells wreak havoc. A second later, Vampire 3 delivers a burst that knocks it out of the sky. It careens to the ground with a flaming boom.

'tatatatataattatata!'

Elsewhere, the darkness is playing havoc with everyone's efforts. It would seem that the lack of night fighting experience is showing. Ferret and the Merovians blast ineffectually at one another for the most part...

'Thudthudthud!'
(Crack)
*Shit! That one stung!*, Ferret 1 barks.

A trail of smoke leaks from a tear in his Triplane as one of the cannon armed Jezail's finds a mark. However, he is rescued by the efforts of Ferret 3, who had rejoined the fray with tenacity.

'Tatatatatatata!'

The machine gun rounds slam into the side of the pusher plane, forcing it off into the shadows once more. Being so light, it can take far fewer risks than a Fonck or other models.

It makes the mistake of getting brave.

The moment it veers back into sight for another go, you set upon it. A single round or 2 goes flying directly into the propeller at the rear of the craft. Smoking, the machine plummets down and out.

However, it's clear the Merovians are not giving up! The remaining bogeys, a few Foncks and another Jezail, are tenaciously harrying your comrades.

*We can't keep this up forever!*, Vampire 3 says. His own Udet is better off than those of the Ferret's, but even he is showing signs of wear.

Then, another pair of Foncks comes gliding in, illuminated by one of their own spotlights. It seems they mean to cut off your way back to the retreat path!

*All friendly craft*, a voice suddenly breaks over the radio-Braun, Merovian patrols are arriving in force! Lose them if you can! We may not be able to retreat as a cluster! We have heavily damaged bombers to guard..and we aren't unscathed ourselves!*

You think.
---
>Time for a fighting withdrawal! You aren't meant to stick around! Break through them with the Ferrets and return to Vampire and Crow!

>You'll take em all on! Time to see what this cannon can really do!

>Try to climb higher with your allies. Perhaps an upward retreat could pay off?

Drats! It looks like you'd have to fight your way out of here after all!

"Guys, I think it's time to go", you radio over. "Like now. We've overstayed our welcome."

*Your suggestion? A gift box? Maybe a friendly hug as an apology?*, Ferret 1 drawls, veering out of a chase with a wounded Fonck.

"Spearhead", you say simply. "Form up on me. We're breaking out of here!"

The radio buzzes back.

*Look at you, taking charge. Happens I agree*, Vampire 3 states. *Come on you lot! Sally point, back to the ground force!*

Around you, the Enemy is poking in and out of the darkness, their numbers unknown. But you think you can pull this off. You've just gotta hit them just right...

"Charge! Follow me!", you say, as the planes form up into an assault formation.

'Vroooooooooom!'

As your spearhead charges forwards, the enemy makes their intentions clear. The two encroaching Foncks head right for you, clearly intent on a game of chicken.

Well, you aren't in the mood for games.

'Thudthudthud!'

Your shots go wide as a Fonck veers away at just the right moment.

'Tatatatatata!'

A brief burst of machine gun fire rakes your craft, but it's not serious. Still, it does some damage, you note. Around you, the guns of your wingmen are blazing.

'Tatataatatatatata!'
'Tatatatataatata!'

The other Fonck coming at you is supremely unlucky, as your formation pours forwards its fire on him. The front of his cockpit collapses into fire as he dives sharply into the earth. A loud Boom! Erupts as you keep flying.

*Wooohooo!*, Ferret 1 yells. *Thank you for flying with Air Fliegermacht!*

The Merovians are not done.

Gnawing at the edges of your formation, the Frogs open up fire sporadically in the chaos of your assault. Here and there a shot connects, but the shock of your teams forward charge, and the skill it is executed with, pay off.

By the time you all break through the encirclement, you haven't lost anyone. At the same time of course, everyone is quite under the weather as well...

*Ah crap*, Ferret 2 murmurs, *That was the last of my ammo back there...*

*And I am running at most a few bursts myself*, Vampire 3 admits. Still, you'd take ammo issues over deaths any day of the week. As for locally, you had managed to ration your cannon rounds. You had no more room to spare, but you think you had enough left...assuming no big surprises.

Back on the main course, you fly over a series of shattered spotlights and burning AA positions along the way out. You assume it to be work of the Crows and Vampires....

And soon enough, you make contact.

The radio buzzes.

*That you? Chimera?*, Crow 3 sounds off, as you approach a group of shapes in the gloom. It looks like they had taken to veering from the main escape route, perhaps not a bad idea, given that the Merovians would be pack hunting that trail like bloodhounds.

"Here and alive", you report. "Did I miss any excitement?"

*We worked out our frustrations...*, Crow 2 mutters. Ah, suspicion confirmed. *I see you pulled the rats out of the frying pan. Good work.*

*And(cough) Mattos...I trussht you-(cough), fared well?*, Count Vlak asks.

*I'm doing well sir. Can't say the same about you. You didn't get shot did you?*, Vampire 3 responds, probably noting the audible slur in the noble's voice.

*A sshimple in and out affair..(cough). Focus on the mis(cough)shhion. Has anyone taken note of the Wolves?*

You blink. Now that you think about it, you hadn't heard a single peep from Werewolf since they flew off to handle the Jezail wave early on...

*Uhhh, guys?*, Ferret 3 gulps. *I think we may have an issue. 12 O'clock. Hot.*

>WARNING WARNING
>(HEROIC ACE APPROACHES)
>The Black Lightning is Here
>[Fire][Rage][Pain[Fire][Rage][Pain]
----
In the distance, illuminated by the light of the moon, and the fire of the valley below, come a trio of dark craft. They were positioning themselves so that you could not proceed without facing them head on....and you note the makes.

Every one of the leaders was a pristine Fonck of new make, except for the one heading them....

...who flies an aircraft you know.

Boucher!

You grab the radio, to wa--"GAAAH!"

A violent punch from the Itch slices into your mind. Like it's being forced into retreat from revulsion. Trying to escape from a sickness in the air. And before you know it, your senses...

[Fire. Hate. Burn. Kill. Destroy. Fire. Firefirefirefirefirefire!]

The emotions come to you like a jackhammer from the void. Much like.last time, you cannot connect with Boucher, nor does he try either. He's a blank canvas, with no core. You sense only a black hole where the Phantom had a hitch for communication.

This man was wrong.

[Abomination. Desecration.]

By the time you shake out of it, you hear the radio blaring around you.

*--ITS, IT'S FOUDRE FLIGHT! FOUDRE FLIGHT IS HERE! ANYONE, CAN ANYONE HEAR THIS?*, Ferret 3 yells.

"Don't panic!", you call out. "That's exactly what...he...wants."

You blink as you notice Foudre Flight is not attacking. Far from it, they are simply patrolling over your line of retreat....high, granted.

*Why..what are they doing?*, Ferret 2 asks. *Why aren't they shooting?*

*Check the radio...*, Vampire 2 murmurs.

You have an idea of what you'll find.

Flicking the set away from your friendly only airwaves, you are immediately faced with an eruption of accented Konerlander.

*--OU HEAR ME, YOU ASSHOLES?*, Boucher roars. *I WANT CHIMERA 3! WHERE IS THAT SHIT! THEN I'LL BURN HIS SHEEPDOG ALIVE!*

You blink. He wanted--

[Hate. Fire. Fear.]

*I want his head! These...this fire. BAH! This..this is his doing! Their doing! Face me you little shit!*, he growls.

"Looks like you made a friend!", Ferret 1 sounds off. "Shame they seem to be down a plane. Less for us!"

He's right. The Phantom isn't there. Odd. You knew he wasn't dead...

*I'm holding your return route hostage!*, he snarls. *Step up, or I'll kill you ALL!*

*Yeh, you tell em boss!*

*Hahah!*

But Foudre wasn't budging.
