/qst/ - Quests

Salutations, Swamp Sorcerers, and welcome back to the twelfth installment of Swamp Lord Quest! Once again, you are Lord Jakob Absol, heir of the Archmage Lord Arnveis Absol the Black, Victor over the rebel sorceress Albeda Absol, Liege of the Absol Swamp, Breaker of the Pentacle, and Master of Castle Briarfast.

Last time, you returned home after smashing the rebel forces only to be confronted with treachery in the form of murder, on the Ryd border, of several of your soldiers. You also took the time to perform divinations and discovered a new route to get your soldiers to Lady Galdynfyrgenbach's lands in order to help her put down her own rebel problem.

Now, you march into a council of war, where your archmages and the senior officers of the Last Loyal sit awaiting your pleasure, in addition to the two visiting noblewomen.

Naturally, this takes place in your high hall, with you seated in the Lord's Chair, and them on the other side of the high table. Grandmama is unusually subdued, and for once, she and Nuncle Arad are not heckling each other.

Going with this, because it would be boorish not too. Neither of them probably know our archmages very well, so would likely not pick up on anything being amiss. Give Grandmama time to get her face set, and we should have time to talk with her about her concerns after coming up with a gameplan for those damned R*ds.

My guess is, she's off her pace because of Gorol being taken alive rather than dying in the dark below the Sunken Tower. That's a conversation to be had privately, after the Last Loyal and others leave to carry out orders or attend to other duties.

“Thank you for joining us. Grandmama, would you like some tea? Are you well?” You ask her.

“As well as can be expected.” Her voice is thin and drawn, black eyes blinking at you from that nightmarish witch's face, almost sounding sleepy. Part of you perversely wonders if it would have been kinder if she had never seen Gorol again. To lose someone cleanly, when they are still as you remembered them, can be kinder than to watch them dissipate into madness. Gorol is still a powerful creature, intelligent and skilled at both warfare and magic, but that which drives him is bent and he can no longer function properly. Defeat may make the problem even worse. Some part of him was rational enough to know when he was done, but not rational enough to act the part of a loser. Who knows what he might do?

“Under the circumstances, yes.” Nuncle Arad smoothly draws things back to business. “It seems to me that there are only a few possible responses to this. The surviving soldier made no mention of his ambushers wearing uniforms, but then again it would be all the more suspicious if they did. It also seems to me that they thought they had killed the entire party, or they would have waited for him to emerge from the shadows and killed him then. So we could, credibly, feign ignorance. Act as if we have no idea why our soldiers haven't returned. Even write them a letter, asking if they could look into it...but the envoy in question would be in some danger, potentially. Or...” His brows draw in like twin thunderclouds, “We respond by threatening fire and fury the likes of which the world has never seen unless the perpetrators are delivered to us. Those soldiers were escorting an envoy of the Ryds, if anyone would have safe conduct under the laws and traditions of Vartyne on Ryd lands, it would have been them. This was murder, if it was done by Ryddish soldiers we would be well within our rights to claim territorial restitution.”

“This was a deed foully done indeed, and I myself have seen and spoken to the boy.” Petrine Gwelm says smoothly, folding her hands demurely on her lap. As nobles (contrary to what I may have said earlier), she and Hannah sit on your side of the table. If immediate family was present, family would be seated more closely to you, but as it is they sit a few spaces removed. “So you will not be alone in your accusations.”

You notice that a lot of the younger officers, including your bodyguards, leaned forward with interest when Nuncle mentioned 'territorial restitution'. The older ones, though, stiffened or crossed their arms. You also notice that Hannah...didn't react at all. She is sitting, very stiffly, eyes downcast. Her cheeks are just a tiny bit red. She has been this way since you came in.

You open your mouth to say something and feel a sudden tug on your sleeve. Petrine is holding onto it, and gives you a quick shake of her head. She nods at Hannah, then looks pointedly at the Lady's Chair next to yours. You look over at it...and notice that it is slightly out of position, pushed back a bit from the table as if someone had moved it.

Or sat in it. Someone with no understanding of what that meant.

Nuncle Arad makes things worse by commenting, “I'm afraid it's my fault, I misunderstood and...well, congratulated her, thinking that a...more permanent alliance had been made.”

Grandmama shows the first flicker of animation in a while, glaring at him, “Insensitive old goat. A young girl's feelings are more easily bruised than her hide.” She hisses.

Hannah does everything she can to compress her eight-foot body and shrink down into a crack in the floor. Her lower lip trembles, and she buries her face in her hands.

“It's alright, Hannah. I've done worse.” You reassure her.

“Have you, now?” Nuncle Arad smiles, “I thought you did very well there for a moment.” He chuckles, “Lady Hannah, please forgive me. It suited you well, I thought.”

“It's not her seat, she's right to blush, and you ought not embarrass her with encouragement.” Grandmama snaps, her usual dark fire slowly springing to life.

“It isn't your granddaughter's seat either.” Arad fires back at her, his voice a thunderclap.

“Arrogant greybeard!” Grandmama's eyes blaze, her shapeless robes whipping with sharp-edged shadows, “One who has avoided women his whole life ought not interfere with their affairs!”

“My great-nephew's affairs are closer to me than they are to you!” The wind whips up with Arad's voice, dry and smelling faintly of ozone. The two archmagi, steeped in the essence of their art, glare at each other, the unlucky Loyalmen between them looking as uncomfortable as men in masked helms can. “That flaxen-haired strumpet has not ceased her attempts to weasel her way into-”

“STRUMPET!?” Grandmama shrieks.

“-into my great-nephew's bedchamber since you smuggled her indecently into this castle-”

“INDECENT!? MY PRECIOUS DOLORANNA, THE FLOWER OF MY OLD AGE, INDECENT!? SWEET BOY HAVE YOUR GUARDS BEAT THIS OLD DEVIL UNTIL HIS FORKED TONGUE CEASES TO WAG!” Grandmama can't quite be whinging when she's this angry, the shadows on the floor shifting and twisting into inhuman shapes. “LEST I-”

“LEST YOU DO WHAT, YOU SCHEMING CRONE!?” Arad's beard stands on end, lightning flicking between his lips. Outside, dark clouds churn and writhe in the firmament, and the wind begins to howl. This is probably a coincidence, your morning divinations DID predict a storm.

[Let them argue]
Imagine for a moment we could focus these twos attention to the matter at hand, the cursed Ryd would never know what hit them.
As it stands I'm not getting in between those two, let them argue and we'll continue the meeting.

Alternatively we could suggest they "get a room already"

>>4802097
>[Let them argue]
Take the time to visibly ponder what to do about the actual reason why we're all here, don't stop them until we have how we're going to respond to this situation and make a point on how progress will move past them both if they waste everyone's time bickering.
>>
>>4802097
Make sure Hannah knows that she isn't at fault though. Reinforce it if need be, she doesn't deserve to like it's her fault.

You can’t fight in here, this is the War Room!
More seriously letting them fight it out helps no one, and undermines our authority if it’s seen that our supporters actually injure each other in a duel.

“Soldiers, move so that they're next to each other. If they want to get a room, I won't stop them. In fact, I'll officiate the marriage myself. In the meantime, let them argue.” You wave it off.

“I...sorry...Lord Absol...” Hannah squeaks out, tears glistening in the corners of her eyes.

You smile reassuringly at her. “It isn't your fault.” You tell her gently, “You trust me, don't you? Then believe that.”

“Y...yes...” Her eyes sparkle, “I do trust you.”

One of the senior Loyalmen clears his throat, “My lord, this may be the worst possible time to say so, but my oath demands I give you true and good counsel. We cannot go to defend milady's province if the mountain passes are closed to us. The Ryds have spent centuries fortifying those passes, and even if our magi could break through them every step would be a siege. Barring the ways through the mountains, our only options are east, all the way around the mountains, passing through the Ledo plains and deep into Orruk lands, a journey of months even if uncontested.”

You look him dead in the eye, “We go by sea.”

His voice rises in alarm, “My lord, we cannot! Her ladyship was lucky to beat the spring storms herself. I hail from Soursough, I know well that once the tempests start they continue well into high summer, and with exceeding violence. At this time of year, We could lose every man we sent, even if we had the ships. The winds are enough to hurl even a skilled Stormtongue deep into the endless blue, and once out of sight of land, one might never find one's way back home. I am profoundly sorry to Lady Galdynfyrgenbach, but this cannot be.”

“It can.” You state plainly, and with certainty, “I have foreseen it.” Thunder rumbles as you do, and a crack of lightning illuminates the eyes of the Loyalmen inside their masks. You can see the power in those few words. You can see that they believe it.

You gesture around at the castle, “You still feel it, don't you? My father's shadow. Men believed in him to do the impossible. You will learn to expect the same from me. It is our legacy, since the time of Amadeus, first of our line to rule these lands. We will need ships, however. Real ones, it would take too long to forge them from smoke.” Not that you're entirely confident you could. Easily. You could make something that LOOKS like a ship at rest, but you know nothing of shipbuilding and it's doubtful it would be seaworthy. “Lady Gwelm, can you assist us in this matter?”

She is staring at you, as is Hannah, but recovers smoothly, “I could.” She smiles, “But as much as I wish I could do so for free, I am but a mortal woman. The folk of Gwelm Island are descendants of the ancient People of the Sea. Although poor, we are proud, and bound by our word sworn, not subordination to others. I cannot in good conscience demand my people hand over their ships to you for naught, and mine would not nearly be enough. A price must be paid.”

“What price?” Those words of hers are ominous too.

She smiles, “Just simple gold.” Then she names a number. A high number.

You stare at her, “That much? Surely you don't need THAT much!”

“You want me to brave those waters at this time of year, yes.” She sounds extremely serious. “After all, consider the expenses of...” She begins on a very long, dizzying list, “...and when you consider all of that, I'm throwing in the hardtack at a loss. Cutting my own throat out of friendship.” Petrine Gwelm's smile is dazzling as her Command+Haggle roll devours yours. “Gwelm Island could be a wealthier place, but the merchants of Old Vartyne cut us off at every turn. Every shipping lane, they hold hereditary rights, exemptions from our fees, the right to make port for free wherever they want AND take whatever fish they want from our waters, all approved by past kings. My people are a happy lot, and my family well respected, but they are poor, and they deserve better. I will give it to them, one way or another.” Her smile turns more gentle, “Fret not, presumably the Galdynfyrgenbach coffers will supply your men with provisions while you are on campaign there, you need not spend yourself dry on supplies. Moreover, I will write to Lord Ledo and Lord Schwaltz, expressing my support for what you are doing and asking that they join me in vowing to help protect your lands in your absence by mutually swearing to wage war on anyone who invades your lands in your absence, whether the wild wolf of the woods or the silver fox of the crags, or even ambitious men from further south.”

Her price, in mechanical terms, is 1 Wealth out of your province's 2 for the next month. It will refresh at the end of the month. However, in exchange, you will be able to take 2 out of your province's 3 Might and transport it via the sea to add to Galdynfyrgenbach's 2 Might temporarily. This will raise Galdynfyrgenbach's Might to 3. Yes, that's inefficient (losing 2 temporarily to gain 1 temporarily), but there are many inefficiencies in dividing and combining armies this way. Generally, a score 1 higher is roughly double the value of the previous number, so 1 Might equals half of 2 Might, which is half of 3 Might in very rough, abstract terms (for example, that 3 Might could represent more disciplined or individually powerful troops rather than raw numbers, the Swamp is a good example with its high concentration of sorcerers.

Your shoulders slump. You have bested a (cocky) archmage in personal combat and defeated another (with lesser resources) on the battlefield. Someday, you are hopeful you will do the same in an even combat. It's not bad for someone just a few months into sitting on this chair. You nod, “A fair price, for victory. A fair price, to stop what is happening up north.” Your vision was fragmentary, but two things are clear. Whatever affected your province is somehow connected to Hannah's problems, and some kind of abominable thing is going on up there.

“Thank you.” Hannah's voice is small for her grand height, but her smile is big and warm, her earlier tears banished as she looks at you. “I...I should pay half...”

“No. You will need your resources for the campaign. Officers, muster the levies. Grandmama, Arad, provide me with your strongest and most skilled apprentices. We have work to do. Oh, and Lady Gwelm? Leave Lord Schwaltz out of this, he isn't as high in my trust as you are, or Lord Ledo.”

You stand.

“What will your response be, to the Ryds?” Arad asks.

Grandmama, for her part, smiles a terrifying smile, “Oh sweet boy, the strongest and most skilled of my students is in a comfortable, locked room in this very castle.” She purrs, a horrifying sound, “You could take him with you. Perhaps, far from his obsessions, he would be of use.”

Bide our time for now. We're stretched a bit thin helping Hannah with her rebellion currently. Save the promises of smoke and steel for when it comes time to go fox-hunting.

Night Wong. Good session today!

A week.

Since there's not really any better place to ask, Wong, are we still on track for L5R today?
>>
>>4811480
I guess that is a 'no'. I thought LR5 was back to being on Wednesdays?

Anyway, what are we planning on doing with Gorol, anyway?
>>
>>4815483
Make use of his skills and abilities. Then give him a fair trial afterwards.
>>
>>4815738
...I'm just worried that if we go the trial route (and inevitable execution at the end of it) we are going to lose the best possible chance to unravel the conspiracy against us. I don't know. The man is dangerous, sure, and in the end, the law says what the law says. Just feels like we are leaving money on the table, using him for this campaign, then going straight into the trial.
>>
>>4816259
Honestly, I wish we didn't take him alive now. Would have been a lot easier to deal with his death. He's useful, yes, but we could be potentially giving him enough time and rope to hang us with.
>>
No game tonight. I'll be honest, some personal stuff going on gave me writer's block and unlike normal I didn't have a nice morning before work to unblock and do my usual notes. It doesn't help that I get off work about 2.5 hours later than I did when I was running Mecha Space Pirate Quest.
>>
>>4818813
Don't worry about it Wong. No one expected life not to get in the way, and I wouldn't want to force you to play while other stuff is occupying your mind. Take some time off if you need it, we'll be here when you're ready and able mate.
>>
>>4818813
Perhaps run once on the weekends alternating quests?
>>
>>4818813
All good Wong, Take the time you need to decompress and relax.
>>
>>4818813

Hey Wong, things come up. Focus on you first, otherwise everything else will suffer for it.
>>
Damn, Finally after a week or less I catch up with the Quest, and is fucking fantastic. And with my little ability with Photoshop I wanted to do some shitposting.

>>4802419
I'm not sure about taking Gorol with us. By Grandmama reaction it can be an excuse to use him and in Galdynfyrgenbach we can execute him fast and painlessly like Grandmama wanted. The thing is that he can easly escape if we don't bring Dolly with us to chase him since we don't have that spell to get inside a Shadow and run.

Galdynfyrgenbach is a great extense of land, surely harsh for anyone, but if Gorol really go around the world he surely went there and sure he knows how to survive if he escapes from us, but also it might be dangerous if we leave him in the castle alone

Guys, I have some bad news. I've been trying to write and...it's not coming as easily as usual. Perhaps it's the fact that there are a million things that need to be done on the house, or the new work schedule, but it's better to put out good stuff slowly than bad fast. So we're taking a hiatus. Not a long hiatus, probably a week or two to just decompress my brain, which will give me time to stat some people and get a pastebin going with all of the spells and various stats on it.

For those of you following the L5R quest, same deal, although that hiatus was announced in advance and I've still got an epilogue for that story arc to post. I'm not burned out and neither quest is over, it's just hard to focus when I have "oh I can either prewrite tomorrow before work OR pour concrete so my fence doesn't fall over" in the back of my mind, and it's the time of year for that.
>>
>>4828655
as usual, real life takes precedence over giving us free entertainment. get your own stuff in order then come back when you're ready.
>>
>>4828655
Hey man, it's like I said before in (>>4818831).

Don't worry about taking some time off to decompress, we'll be here when there isn't a million things on you mind.
>>
>>4828655
No worries Wong, take the time you need man.
>>
That all said, I'll be around to answer questions and such about the setting and system.
>>
>>4831813
Hope life has been treating you better this past week Wong. I can't believe I missed that you had posted the arc round up Crab thread.
>>
>>4842430

Life is actually treating me fine, there's just a bit of writer's block for this particular quest. I'm struggling against the temptation to run yet another one in the interim just so I have something to write, something wuxia-related using Legends of the Wulin or Wandering Heroes of Ogre Gate.
>>
>>4849697
I'd be cautiously interested in that, if it helps you work your way through writers block. I'm not overly familiar with the system/setting but I enjoy new things.
I've just seen far too many QM's end up juggling too many quests and eventually dropping them all, to just be purely excited.

+1, don't let it stress or burn you out, we can have a Ranma 1/2 version on a small scale to start with.
