/qst/ - Quests

Hello, /qst/. This may seem like an odd sort of conversation starter, I haven't really been on 4chan much since my youth and the situation lately has been... somewhat strange. You see, my brother died recently, got caught with COVID and all that a couple of months ago, and we're just getting around to cleaning up his apartment. Imagine my surprise when I walk in, ready to start packing away boxes over a long weekend, and find his computer not only still open but also logged in to all his pages, including several on this board, and the paranormal one. Most of the ones from the paranormal board have 404'd, but I digress.

My brother built a very large, strange looking machine. It's sitting right here next to me, plugged into his computer through some very jank cable setups. I fiddled with the controls a bit and apparently it's some sort of very complicated camera-sort-of-thing. There's a lot of things attached to it, a GPS somehow, a keyboard, a radio, some microphones, and the only sort of open output slots I can see are two USB ports, one of which is occupied, and a small compartment full of polaroids of places I can't really recognize.

There is a small LED screen (I'm not sure the term, it's like, sort of tan ish and it has black pixels that look weird if you tilt your eyes at it? The thing they made calculator screens out of) and it's blinking and saying "Awaiting Input". I'm not really an imaginative guy, but, from what he's told me during occasional dinners, "/tg/ fucking sucks now", and I'm stuck here for a week, and, well, the thing wants input!

So I figured I would come and ask you guys for ideas. Sort of like a tribute to him? /qst/ gave him a lot of happiness throughout his life and if this machine does what I think it does, I figure it could give some... intrigue? Amusement? Back into yours.

Pic attached is one of the photos in the output slot - it's also in a folder on my brother's desktop, conveniently enough. I can't say I quite recognize where it was taken, and there's no location metadata attached, either.

Again, apologies for the weird thread.

Well, it chugged and hummed for a while and then spat out a new polaroid into the slot, confirming basically what I thought was going to happen. Then, it put another file on the computer, probably at the same time. Uploading it now. Gotta say, not a huge fan of this one, anon.

I wonder if this is, like... an actual photograph of a thing that exists? I can definitely say I've seen my fair share of animals but never anything that's... this weird looking. Okay. Not many things that are this weird looking, I'll redact myself on that one.

It's getting late, though, so I'm going to go lock all the doors and get to bed. If there's any more input in the morning I'll feed it into the machine and post the output for you all. I hope you all sleep well, /qst/folk.

Maybe try putting some in a thumb drive and connecting it to the open port? I wouldn't be surprised if it's set to automatically load and process image files. Hell, might do it for all sorts of files, try music or video, too. Just make sure that you have a way to quarantine the thumb drive while you're accessing it between runs, set up a virtual machine or use an old laptop as a burner.

He was a database administrator sort of person for a big company I'm probably not at liberty to name for op-sec purposes. Alright, so, I woke up and tried putting a thumb drive in while it was running >>4757928 this input (which produced the attached picture), and prepared to feed some other images through it. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like it accepts that as input, only as another output slot, since the only thing that happened after it was done the first one was that it put it on the thumb drive. I think it's just an additional output slot, nothing interesting there, sadly.
>>4758193
I take my meds every morning, friend.

>>4757957
Anyway, I went up and called a couple of my brother's coworkers and friends, spent all morning doing that in between remote work for my job. I asked if they had heard anything about his weird machine, and, surprisingly, a couple of them had? Mostly that he was talking about some "big project" he was working on. It sounds like this thing ate up pretty much all his free time in his last days - he stopped showing up to meetings and stopped responding to calls and snapchats. The only thing he seemed to care about was finishing this thing as he got sicker. :(

On another note, I'm not going to pretend I haven't read my fair share of creepypasta as a kid so let me tell you, going to bed after getting a strange machine to spit out a polaroid of a helicopter and waking up to the sound of helicopter rotors is certainly... something. Almost certainly a coincidence, I do live in a city with an active airspace, but still freaked the hell out of me.

Anyway, the machine's chugging along and ready to accept new input. Over and out.

>>
>>4758809
It can integrate text into the images. Interesting. Okay, this is probably not going to work, but let's try asking it a question. Give it the input of "What is this machine's purpose?".
>>
>>4758809
if you want to make figure out whether it's a creepypasta situation where you summon this stuff, input an object where if something related happens it's really unlikely to be a coincidence.
e.g. a noticeable, but mostly harmless object or animal you're unlikely to encounter in the first place, plus a color it usually wouldn't have

you far from the ocean and zoos:
blue penguin

you not in australia:
purple wombat

combine one of those with the same password.

also how long time passed between making the helicopter image and being awakened by one? you should maybe do something like this either early in the morning or late in the evening so you don't miss the apparently delayed spooky happening.

until then, maybe try coordinates. it's got GPS.

So, it chugged way harder than I heard it go before. Took longer, too, made a lot of noise, and I could swear I smelled some smoke but I couldn't see anything and the smell's gone now anyway.

I don't know about you, but that, uh, distinctly looks like a polaroid to me. And I don't want to frighten anyone, least of all myself, but the warped background features are distinctly reminiscent of the apartment I'm spending the week in. Haha. Cool! Love that. What next?

Vasa Museum. Sweden made The Biggest Boat. it sucked and nobody wanted to tell the king, so they tried to use it and it sank. 300 years later they salvaged it and built a museum around it. it's like three floors of smaller exhibits about naval history with the Vasa in the middle.

that does look kinda like a large salvaged wooden boat surrounded by people and cameras.

which is a really specific image. and really the most memorable thing about the place, even though the building is weird from the outside too.
thing is though, the museum is closed due to covid. not sure how long, but at least five days.

both those things point me towards a hypothesis: at least with GPS coordinates it takes pictures of memories of the place, not the actual place.

Well, this was something.

Anyway, the friend and I kicked around the machine a little bit (not literally). Here's the important stuff we can glean from it:

One is that it's plugged into a bunch of plugs at once.
Two is that this thing is a mess and, at least from what we could tell externally, makes no sense.
It's kind of sort of a very complicated computer? His friend mentioned something about being asked about "Raspberry Pies", which is apparently the name of a kind of computer, and graphics cards, which I imagine are probably necessary for something that makes pictures? I was never the huge techie of the family so I can't really speak to that very much.

I haven't seen or heard anything weird or anomalous recently, so I'm thinking the helicopter might've been some sort of coincidence. Or maybe it's not and I'm still in the opening paragraphs of a creepypasta? Who knows. I'm gonna run some of your inputs and then order some more Popeyes.

Apologies for the significant delay. Ended up being very busy, but we did poke at the machine a little and actually made some interesting progress. Namely - there is a small compartment on the underside of the machine we missed earlier labeled with my name. It is locked with some sort of absurdly complicated electronic lock mechanism, and neither me nor my spouse could really jimmy it open. Or, rather, we tried, and then the lights started flickering so we decided to stop trying.

I'm not really spooked, per se. I think it's fairly clear that this machine is conscious, and it is thinking and responding to us (or it's unconscious and really good at pretending), and I think things are starting to come together regarding its purpose. I have a feeling once we figure out how to unlock the mechanism - it has no obvious input methods like a number dial or whatever, only a couple of seams we could try to put flathead screwdrivers into - we'll have really cracked this strange event open.

>>4762154

I went through all the drawers and boxes that I haven't already done so to, and nothing that immediately sticks out. I knew you'd eventually get this thing open because you're a nosy little shit, which I mean entirely as a compliment. To be honest, I was making this big lug to use for myself, but once I realized that I wasn't going to be able to stay here then I knew I had to leave it behind for you to find. Thankfully, I think I was able to get him done without any major bugs, even if I kind of had to rush to get it done.

I'm sorry I wasn't able to talk to you more, and all the guys, and mom and dad, and that I wasn't around to pet Rocky more. And that I won't be around either.

There are so many things I want to do, [redacted]. I'm scared. I'm scared of dying and I don't think I'm getting any better, and I'm scared that once I go, nobody will remember me anymore. I hope I get better, but, I have been calling it an apocalyptic superbug for a reason. If I do get better, maybe I'll just burn this note. Maybe I won't. We'll see.

If I'm gone, and you get this note, can you ask the dudes on /qst/ if Joker Quest is done yet? Don't, like, make a whole thread about it. I just wanna know if I'm gonna be in the hospital while it's ending or something. Sorry. That's stupid. You don't have to do that.

And thank you all for reading "My Brother's Machine". I wasn't exactly sure how I was going to go about doing this strange little experiment, but it ended up working out, I had fun, we made some pictures, hopefully you had a good time.

Trivia/Behind the scenes under the spoiler:
The fact that we ended on "4-108" was completely unintentional, but appropriate.

This was originally, as you could've guessed, way more creepypasta-y, with the things in the pictures coming out to torment [redacted]. I ditched it because I couldn't figure out a way to do it that wouldn't have broken immersion to not just... have the dude leave or call the cops or something. Why would he keep trying to get help from some nerds on 4chan? Did the computer lock him out of every website besides /qst/?

The art was generated using a neural network called "CLIP-GLASS", as some of you may have sort of guessed.

I'd love to do another artquest with AI generated pictures, but I'd definitely need a good idea for it first. Might come back for that one.

I also run "Dragon Slayer Quest" and nothing else as of right now - you don't have to check it out, but I'd personally think it was cool if you did.

Hope you all had fun!
