Alan shrugs, there's a disappointed expression on his face. "Of course, it's probably for the best that she's limited to a human's comprehension. The beings she can form are just fragmented dreams compared to what she could really do with that power."

"What... What sort of authority are we talking about?" You really don't like the sound of this. Betty being linked to Azathoth is bad, of course, but as he's the one Outer God who doesn't actually have any sort of malicious motives due to his... well, his eternal slumber, it's a sort of trade-off of being both good and bad. Betty's actions will at least be her own and she's not going to be at risk of being fully possessed to act as nothing but an empty vessel. But if something could cause Azathoth to awaken, then... well, everything would end.

"The Authority to create life, of course. There's only one being in all of existence with the capacity to match Azathoth in that regard... You might call him God. Despite his... hands off approach in regards to the infinite worlds he formed out of the primordial energy of my Father and preference to act through mortal agents, he is quite problematic for beings like myself. A full conflict between the Outer Gods and the being that you mortals call God, YHWH or Allah would almost certainly awaken Azathoth and erase all of creation." Alan's voice is serious as he mentions that. The fact that God truly exists shouldn't really be too surprising to you, you already knew he probably had to have existed, seeing as all these other deities exist.

"Then... Are you saying that... God wasn't a creation of Azathoth?" It makes at least some sort of sense, and it gives you at least some comfort in knowing that despite everything, all of existence isn't actually just just some toy box of eldritch beings of incalculable power. That out there somewhere there may exist an ultimate force of benevolence and good. God may in fact be the one being capable of giving you an explanation of how you actually came here.

"That's... One of the few things that I don't know." Alan shrugs again. "'God' predates my existence. He may predate Azathoth, or Azathoth may predate it. It could even be that the two existences came into being at the same time, who can say? You'd have to ask my father, or God himself, and trust me, neither are very talkative!" Alan laughs. "But as I was saying, this world was formed out of Azathoth's authority. Which means that everything you see here is very much real, perfect recreations of everything Elizabeth remembered from her life, complete with minds and souls. The Unrestricted Creation of Life, a creation Authority surpassing that of an Earth Mother Goddess by dozens of orders of magnitude." He's... He's kidding, right!?

"Betty... really had something that powerful, all this time?" That sort of thing... Nobody could control that much power! Even BB at the height of her power only had the authority of the Earth Mother Goddesses through Potnia Theron! To have that sort of authority on a universal... no, a multiversal scale! It's incredible!

"Of course she did." Alan crosses his arms. "Do you really think that an authority derived from my father would be inferior in any way to something born on this ball of mud?" Alan lets slip some of his disdain for humanity and Earth as a whole, but you ignore it for now. "Fortunately for you, the human limitations of the girl have suppressed the skill and her Servant body cannot fully handle it, though if it were to be unsealed to its full extent, she would not require any of your magical energy to allow it to function." What a terrifying authority. You hope BB doesn't find out about this, otherwise she may very well try to steal it for herself. "Now, do you have any other questions?"

"The truth is that upon being possessed by my father, Elizabeth Parris... well, she erased her family accidentally, with the exception of her cousin Abigail, yet she was so overwhelmed with the guilt of doing so, that she not only used the authority of my father to create perfect simulacrums of her parents and siblings, but she also used it to make a copy of herself before deciding to turn her power on herself. The true Elizabeth Parris chose to erase herself at the age of nine years old to prevent another tragedy from occurring with her powers ever again. That's why Betty physically has no presence in her own mental world, or well, at least not on this layer of it." Alan shrugs again, and you really feel like that must be a habit of his, you want to tell him to stop being so nonchalant about such a heart wrenching story, but it wouldn't actually do anything.

"That's... terrible!" You feel dreadful about hearing the truth behind Betty's past. "But, if she didn't want to suffer the potential of another tragedy, why on Earth did she allow herself to be summoned as a Servant?" It just doesn't make sense that a girl who would attempt to erase herself from the planet would allow herself to be summoned once more.

"She didn't. It was a whim of my father that caused me to... arrange things to happen like that. Azathoth... well, I gather that he wanted to meet you at some point, though you can understand why this might be a little... difficult, considering the consequences of what might happen if he were to awaken fully, so I took a different aproach." Alan frowns. "The girl's memories were sealed as a result of her summoning. If she were to remember what she did, she would likely just erase herself once more, bypassing her current mental restrictions on the Unrestricted Creation of Life." You really want to find Betty just so you can try to comfort the girl about the tremendous pain she must've suffered as a result of her past. You had no idea the suffering that Betty must've gone through to decide to commit suicide like she did. "Now, I think that about neatly sums up the girl's past." Alan stretches, showing absolutely no empathy for the girl in the story he just told. "You have another question, right? I can tell from the look on your face that you do." He correctly guesses, and now it's your turn to frown.

"I do have one more question actually. What would the answer to the best question that would allow me to solve the mystery of this world and find Betty have been?" It feels kind of cheeky to ask such a tricky question in order to get the best answer possible to find Betty.

Alan claps. "Oh Bravo, that's a good one. Skipping the question and arriving straight at the answer? Well, I suppose I can answer that. You need to go deeper. This layer of Betty's inner world doesn't contain her because she's physically been removed from it by her own suppressed memories. You won't be able to find her here, but you might be able to find a path that leads to her in places she used to frequent." Alan suddenly looks at his watch, and tuts. "Physically, it's been about thirty minutes since you entered this place, but I've altered the passing of time in this world for you a little, so it's been a little over a minute on the outside world." Alan then turns around and opens the door, and instead of leading out to the hallway of the Parris manor, it simply leads into a black void. "Still, you'd better hurry up. Things might get a little hectic without your guidance." You want to call out to stop the man before he leaves, but you end up just watching him disappear through the door.

"Go deeper? How the hell am I supposed to do that?!" You yell, and Abigail finally walks into the room at that moment. She still looks a little scared, but you can tell that the majority of her fear must've disappeared at the same time as Alan.

"Are you OK, Mister? The bad feeling that was in this room disappeared." Abby explains that she can no longer feel anything wrong with the room. It must've been Nyarlathotep putting her off. Wait... then wouldn't that mean that he'd been waiting in this room for you to show up all this time? You don't want to think about that one too hard.

"Yeah, I'm fine, Abby." You smile weakly at the girl who is looking at you with concern. You know for a fact that even if she was created through one of Betty's memories, this version of Abigail Williams is very much real. A memory processed by the authority of Azathoth into being a perfect recreation of the Abigail Williams that Betty once knew. It's a genuinely terrifying ability that Betty hides within her mental world, you really preferred when you thought she could just make weird tentacle beak things and organ dogs.

A lot of this journey is actually represented in Fate as well, as this process is essentially what Magi are trying to undergo through reaching the Root.
True Magic is essentially the knowledge gained by reaching Kether in the kabbalist system, but magi are basically cheating with the Grail by tearing a hole in reality so they can directly look upon the wellspring of knowledge and energy that is the Root.
A lot of that is oversimplified but that's basically the big connection between real world occultism and the Nasuverse.

Abby obviously knows Betty very well indeed, and the two girls were probably best friends with each other in life, in addition to being cousins. That might be why the Abigail here is the one person who seems to be able to remember Betty at all. You also pat her on top of the head to try to reassure her, you feel like you should stop doing this, while the girl seems to enjoy it, you can't keep just spoiling her, can you?

You don't know if the path deeper into Betty's mind would be there though, perhaps if you were to bet on the roots of this tree being able to reach deeper into Betty's mental space? You don't know.

"Anywhere else?" You need to know everything the girl has to tell you before you actually make a decision. If you were to simply go ahead and follow after the first lead presented to you, you probably wouldn't get anywhere. Then again, doing exactly that has already gotten you this far by following after Abby in the first place. It would've been a complete nightmare if she managed to get away, and it would've probably taken you hours in this world to figure out what was actually going. After all, it's not like you would really be able to expect random people on the street to know the Parris family.

So we might be able to find something related to her there, but the minister has already been replaced by some man I don't know." Abigail gives you another suggestion. The church of Salem. She didn't like it down there very much, but if she's trying to hide, she might've left something there. I..." Abby sounds a little ashamed. "I can't actually find the key to the basement, so I haven't been able to open it yet." Wonderful, so the door to the basement is going to require you to either kick it down use magecraft to try to unlock it if you want to see what's inside.

"Abby, follow me. We're going to down to the Basement, I'm going to use my magecraft to open up the door, so we won't need to find the key." You want to find out what's in the basement before you leave to check out something else. What Abigail said was pretty spot on. If you wanted to hide something in this house, you'd definitely use the basement, and the missing key and locked door is only reinforcing your desire to want to see exactly what is inside the storage room.

"Magecraft? Are... you a wizard, mister?" Abby tilts her head in surprise at you suddenly revealing something that ought to be ridiculous to somebody to hear for the first time. Then again, Abby responds remarkably well to your revelation, it's probably not all that strange for somebody who has had their entire family disappear seemingly overnight to suddenly be told by the mysterious man who showed up to help them that they were a wizard. Of course, it's not like Abigail has probably read many books, considering her age and... well the time period, but this is the sort of thing that one could easily envision happening in a story.

"A Magus, but yeah. Pretty much a wizard. You... aren't going to try to get the town to lynch me or something, are you?" Abby tilts her head in confusion, unsure why you would even suggest such a bizarre thing. Looks like she's definitely unaware of the Witch Trials that might've happened in this town under normal circumstances.

"Why... Why would I do that? Is your magic related to the devil or something? Are you going to summon a demon?" Abigail thankfully doesn't seem like she's about to restart the Salem Witch Trials on you, and you smile at her as you pat her head again. She smiles at you as you continue patting her on the head. You might be developing a habit of doing this.

"No, of course not! The magic I'll be using to open the door is one that simply uses some of my magical energy to manipulate the lock. I can either have it move directly with my energy or just overload it and break it." You explain that basic mechanics to Abby, just to make sure that she doesn't actually think that you're really using some sort of demonic magecraft in order to do something as simple as opening up a simple lock. "Can you lead me to the basement now?" Abby nods as she leads you back downstairs, and towards a plain looking wooden door. Completely unassuming, but still locked all the same.

You place a palm on the lock and will some of your magical energy inside it, carefully manipulating the metal of the lock so that it opens as it normally would if a key was placed within it. There's a loud clunk as the lock is undone. While you could just have overloaded it with magical energy and blown the lock into pieces, that's probably not the best first experience for somebody as superstitious as Abby for magecraft. You briefly wonder for a moment whether or not it would be possible to take Abigail out of this place with you. Nyarlathotep did mention that everything here was created perfectly as a result of Betty's powers, so if that were the case, then couldn't Abby leave safely? Well, she might not be able to leave of her own accord, but if you could take her out of this place, you're sure she'd have a better time. At least she wouldn't be alone. "Wow! Did that really unlock it?" Abby is looking at you with starstruck eyes. Not really the sort of response you'd expect from the girl responsible for one of the most well known witch hunts in human history to somebody using magecraft.

As you open the now unlocked door to the basement, you peer into the darkness. You can't see anything down in the depths of the store room, but as you're about to think of a way around this, like a rune of light, Abby suddenly runs off somewhere. You're about to follow after her until she quickly returns to you, holding a torch in her two hands, and quickly hands it to you. "Thank you, Abigail, you really needn't have." You could have just used your magecraft, but it's clear that the girl wants to be of at least some assistance to you. You pat her head once more as she hands you the lit torch, and the two of you descend into the darkness.

The basement is chillingly cold, and you can see Abigail suppressing a shiver as she follows after you. When you finish descending the stairs, you put the torch on a wall sconce, but before taking a look around, you remove your jacket and hand it to Abby. "Here. Wear this, you're cold, aren't you?" The girl looks surprised by your sudden caring action, and happily takes it from your hands.

"Thank you, mister!" Abigail is happy to wear your jacket, even if it's much too large for her. "What... What's your name, mister? You never told me." You almost frown at that. You'd never even told the girl your name. This is a situation that needs to be immediately rectified. You can't just let her keep going on without even knowing your name.

"Ah, how foolish of me. Sorry, I'm Shinji Makiri. But please, call me Shinji, alright?" You flash the girl a confident and reassuring smile. It's a little bit late for introductions, but better late than never.

"OK, Shinji!" Abby is clearly a little bit confused by your unfamiliar sounding name, but doesn't stumble when it comes to the pronunciation at all. In fact, as you take your eye of her to look around the room, you can hear the girl repeating your name quietly, you aren't sure if it's just so she doesn't forget it, or if she just enjoys saying it.

The basement itself is fairly plain. A few boxes and barrels are stacked on top of one another, and there doesn't seem to be much out of ordinary, except for a single wooden mannequin standing proudly in place in the middle of the room. It strikes you as odd that such a thing should exist in the storage room, and it's... almost as if it is calling out to you. Like it wants for you to touch it.

Interlude Start.

"Saber. Berserker, and Caster. Congratulations, I've deemed you... powerful enough to serve me. If you serve me well, I shall share the Holy Grail with you after I claim it for myself, and your wishes shall all be granted. As for you, Lancer, Archer, Assassin and Rider..." The blue haired man has an evil grin on his face, and Lancer knows that there's simply no way that this is going to go well for any of the four Servants who clearly aren't as powerful as the three that the unbelievably powerful summoner favored. "You shall be put to death." Yeah, Lancer guessed something like that was going to happen.

Berserker laughs from behind the blue haired man, the blonde girl is wearing a frankly ridiculous outfit, but that's not really of much concern to Lancer right now. "You four ought to lament your weaknesses, you call yourself heroes? You're pathetic!" The Berserker has no remorse for the condemned four. Meanwhile, the Saber is remaining quiet, a pained expression on his face. The most interesting reaction however comes from the Caster, a black haired man with a white robe. He seems to be observing not the condemned Servants, but the man condemning them to death, his eyes betraying a great sadness.

"I relieve you of your contract with me." Lancer and the others stumble backwards as they each feel their source of magical energy and anchor to the world being cut off. Saber draws his sword, prepared to jump into a fight with the four of them, but the Master holds out a hand to stop the man. "I appreciate your loyalty, Saber, however, it is uncalled for. I shall deal with the four of them myself." The man takes a step forwards, and an instinct in the back of Lancer's head is begging for him to flee, while the others might not have realized it yet, the mere act of looking at this guy is giving Lancer a sense that only death awaits those who would try to fight him head-on.

Lancer spares a glance at his three fellow Servants who had been condemned to death. A tremendous wolf, Rider. A man with a skull mask and a large arm wrapped in bandages, Assassin, and finally, a weirdly dressed kid clutching a... gun that was holstered at his side. A revolver, if Lancer's knowledge of the future is correct. Even if the summoning was unusual, it seems that they were still summoned with the knowledge of this era. A real weird Archer, considering he isn't a bowman at all.

Suddenly there's a loud noise, a small hole is blasted straight through the blue haired man's cranium, and he stumbles backwards "You were one confident son of a bitch, weren't ya?" Archer's gun is smoking as he still holds it pointed at the man who summoned them all. Assassin seems to have taken this as an opportunity to disappear, Lancer would call him a coward, but he'd really love being able to do the same right now.

"What a pathetic attack. To rely on modern weaponry to such a degree. You're not fit to be called a Heroic Spirit." The wound in the man's head instantly seals up, and he continues walking towards the four of them with a calm expression. Another five shots ring out, though this time, all they do is bounce off of the face of the man harmlessly. Each bullet flattening against his face before uselessly falling to the floor. "Make no mistake, your first attack only harmed me because I allowed it." He takes another step forwards, and Rider suddenly lets out a howl and leaps at the man with it's fangs-bared, only for the colossal head of a snake to emerge, with it's mouth wide open, causing the huge wolf to leap directly into its death. The snake head swallows the wolf whole before it returns to the body of the man, any presence of Rider vanished from the world completely. "Pathetic. Perhaps if you were Fenrir, you might've had a chance at harming me." The man is unimpressed by the efforts of the Servants.

Lancer isn't going to stick around and wait for his turn, and already he begins scheming an escape. His Noble Phantasm was completely unusable in a situation like this, and he couldn't rely on his physical abilities either. Pleading was right out too, it meant that he had no choice. He was going to need to use his intellect. He'd managed to use it to get himself out of plenty of messes in the past, but maybe not one so one-sidedly hopeless as this one. He looks at the spear in his hand, a frankly worthless weapon for the situation. "Hey, 'Master'!" Lancer calls out to the man. "Are you really going to just kill us all without even letting us know your name? Honestly, for a God, you've got no manners at all." Lancer had made a bet. There's simply no way that this man in front of him could be anything other than a God, the level of power difference between him and the Servants was simply too great.

"Ha! Manners? What use is there in revealing my name to three dead men?" Lancer tries not to smile. So long as he can keep the bastard talking, the greater his chances of finding an escape route are. The room he's in is fairly plain if not well decorated. It's clearly the entry-hall of a palace of some sort. "However, I suppose that I may well reveal my identity to the three that shan't be consumed. I am Yamata-no-Orochi. Snake God of Dragons." Lancer keeps scanning the room with his eyes. There has to be a way out! Finally, his eyes settle on something, a single tile on the floor that was a single shade darker than all the rest of them.

"There is only one God, and you are not he." Assassin finally makes his move as he appears behind the god, without a contract, his disappearance is all but guaranteed, so it looks like he's made a decision in to take out a bastard treacherous god first, or at least he's trying to. "Zabaniya!" The Assassin crushes something in his huge arm, yet Yamata-no-Orochi has no response to the activation of a Noble Phantasm. "Impossi-" Assassin doesn't get to finish his last words as two smaller snake heads emerged from the body of the god, each grabbing a side of the unfortunate Assassin before pulling him into two pieces in a gory display of power. All while this is going on, Lancer creeps closer and closer to the one floor tile, he's betting it all on this!

"Well shit. Looks like we're kind of screwed, huh, Lancer?" Archer has no emotion on his face as he stares death in the eyes. "I don't suppose you've got any bright ideas to survive this, have you?" Archer doesn't sound like he has any hope of surviving this situation, and Lancer, even though he probably would've had a better chance of survival if he just abandoned the gunman to his fate, a part of Lancer just can't do that. Archer is the only Servant in the room who might be able to survive if they could escape, so...

"As a matter of fact, I do!" Lancer finally reveals his master stroke, and smashes his spear against the floor to reveal a secret passage! Lancer thanks each of the Gods as his hunch turns out to be correct, before he jumps down the passage and begins sprinting for his life. Archer was thankfully quite close to him already, so he manages to quickly follow after him before being consumed by the Snake God. "Just keep running, and one of us might make it out of this alive!" Lancer orders the Archer. The two of them can only hope that they are fast enough to actually escape the Snake God, and that this tunnel will lead them to freedom. Lancer's reserves of magical energy were fortunately high as a result of the summoning infusing them all with Magical Energy, but he wouldn't be able to last more than maybe six hours or so anyway without resorting to consuming the souls of humans. Still, that was a problem he'd face when it came up... If it came up.

Lancer is probably Hektor? He has a way with words and negotiations, his NP is too costly to use in a place like this, and he's very cunning. He also is from a polytheistic era. He's basically making use of his Tactics, Proof of Friendship and Disengage here pretty heavily.

As Orochi can only claim powers via his Eater of Gods he got nothing all that special from Lobo or Hassan, as neither have any link to Divinity.

Jason's also a very likely option, but his NP would actually help here though as it scales the more villainous the opponent is. Jason through this should also have some kind of link to the two Argonauts currently active just a few km away and may have had the option to seek aid through it from them. While Medea actively hates him, Herc actually really likes Jason, as he was the one person who treated him as a man and a friend rather than a monster. Alcidies would especially favour Jason as he is the man Jason always saw him as.

If it is Jason there will be some good interactions and trauma to work past with Medea. I'm also curious to see if Astrape Argo could pull forth any of the LB5 new Argonauts to give access to Orion and Achillies etc. But also, Chiyome being a neo Argunaut may have been the connection used by Orochi to summon Jason.

Also a reminder that jason didnt have that much control about what medea did, it was mostly Aphrodite.

You pat Abby on the head one more time before you approach the strange mannequin. It's odd, there's very clearly some sort of magical effect to this thing, and there's a certain amount of malevolence to it that you can detect. Still, you're confident enough in your abilities as a magus that some cursed object shouldn't be capable of doing you much harm, so when you've finished approaching the mannequin you reach out and touch it. There's... no direct response to your touch, yet underneath the wooden skin of the mannequin, you can feel the beating of a heart.

Upon noticing the heartbeat of the wooden construct, you jump away in surprise. "W-what's wrong, Mister Shinji?" Abby says with a voice full of concern at your sudden reflexive action. You take note that she's decided to start calling you 'Mister Shinji' and you aren't sure if you like it. It makes you feel old, despite physically only being a teenager still.

"That... That thing is alive." You take your eyes of the Mannequin for just a moment to make sure that Abigail is alright, but when you look back, the thing has disappeared entirely. "Where did it go?! Abby, did you see it move?"

Abby frowns. "What thing, Mister Shinji?" She tilts her head in confusion at you. "You just walked into the center of the room, and held your hand out before you jumped backwards, is there... something wrong?" The girl's words confuse you for just a moment.

"I think there might be." You quickly get back to Abigail, standing behind her protectively. If you weren't worried about the abilities of your opponent to get being you and Abigail, you'd have stood in front of her, but as it is, you seem to be up against an enemy that is both a shapeshifter and something that is capable of removing the memories of whoever witnesses it. You seem to be an exception right now, but you don't know if that's going to be guaranteed forever.

You scan the room for anything that might've changed, but you can't remember if there was anything different. This thing is clearly a monster or a demon of some sort, and it very likely means to cause you and Abigail harm. You start to back up towards the stairs with an arm protectively held around Abby. You can't kill what you can't see, and you don't just want to start trying to determine whatever random objects in the room aren't as they seem. That would just be playing into the hands of this shapeshifter. You won't solve anything by just making more debris for it to transform into.

It's just the nature of the quest, there's lots of things going on so our choices largely decide what gets focus.
You could say that Manaka was backgrounded because we had the option to interact more with her but ended up doing something entirely different.
There's all kinds of plot threads to follow and people to interact with, it was possible to miss everything involving Masaki Town and even the entire Grail War if we made different choices.
