/qst/ - Quests

Welcome back, honorable bushi of the Crab Clan, to the fifth installment of L5R Chanbara Quest. I'm your host, Wong, and you are Arinaga Daisuke, a vassal of the Hiruma family of the Crab Clan, student of the Hiruma Bushi School, possessor of a very fine katana, devout hater of goblins, lover of a particular Scorpion girl, and slayer of bandits.

Last time, O-Tora came to the village with every last one of his remaining bandits. You slaughtered him, and they broke. Those that were not killed attempting to burn down the village fled when they saw you cut O-Tora down in single combat. A pity that he did not stay dead. You worked out that the cause was the sake he had been receiving from the castle, and have some theories as to the culprit, although you have never before heard of sake being Tainted.

There are no more living bandits in the Koumugi Valley. At least, none not currently in desperate flight to Daisuke-free lands. Now, you make your way to the castle, currently ruled over by your aunt and her yojimbo.

Once again, you make your way through the front gate of the castle. It has been left open, for the obvious reason that the guards were hoping to evacuate the village there. You make a note of their faces. They did their duty well, tonight. Perhaps a Crane or Lion might not understand, you can see a particular sort of samurai deeming their actions insubordinate for leaving their posts and defying orders, but the Wall's challenges mandate both discipline and a degree of flexibility. These men were ready to die to protect farmers whose crops feed soldiers on the Wall. As far as you are concerned, they have done as well as heimin can do.

The oldest of them, a rather short, stout, hairy sort, has to jog to keep up with your rapid stride, "Master Arinaga, what are you planning to do?" He asks, determination overwhelming his natural hesitation to question a samurai.

You can understand why. Your expression right now must be frightfully grim, and even the normally good-humored Sayaka is silent, her soft, dark lips pressed into a taut little line. Your sword is clearly resting loosely in its saya, tonight. "I killed O-Tora. He got back up. Now that the bandits are no longer a threat, tomorrow we will need every guard in this castle to hunt him down and put a final end to him. Lady Arinaga cannot gainsay this, it is her duty as a servant of the Emperor and a samurai of the Crab. If Nishiyama Takeshi says otherwise, I am removing him from his post."

"Removing Nishiyama-sama!?" The guard sounds incredulous. Overjoyed, certainly, but incredulous, "Can you do such a thing?"

"It may be a breach of protocol." You certainly aren't certain of that. You are no courtier, no magistrate, not even a court guard. You are a low-ranking soldier, nothing more, "However, I am prepared for the consequences. The undead cannot be permitted to roam free on this side of the Carpenter Wall. Moreover..." You allow heat to creep into your voice. A samurai is supposed to suppress and mask his emotions in public, to maintain Face, but the paradox of that is that when an insult is too great to maintain composure the answer is the three-foot razor riding on your hip. "That ronin is unfit to command a flock of chickens, let alone humans." You sigh, and say very quietly, "There is much to answer for."

You include yourself in this. You are certain this is not the way a more courtly samurai would have handled this, but it is what you know.

"Master Arinaga." The guard says, rather quietly, "It isn't my place, but...I think you may have a warmer welcome than you expect. I mean, naturally I don't listen to gossip, but I couldn't help overhearing some of what happened. Lady Arinaga may have been...distraught, as women are wont to be." His gaze flicks to Sayaka, "Sometimes. But...I believe since then, she may have had cause to reconsider. Nishiyama has, in accordance with tradition, been set to guard our lord's body day and night, and without him by her side, our lady has been very kind today. She held a special meal, to which all of the castle servants were invited. Those of us on guard duty had our food delivered to us at our stations. She said that it was her way of thanking those who kept her place of refuge intact." He smiles, "For someone who was such a strange girl, she...she..." His voice chokes off suddenly, and he clutches his windpipe, his face turning dark.

Behind you, another of the guards collapses, and another. One by one, they fall to the ground. Sayaka rushes over, grabbing the torch one of the guards dropped and holding it up for a look at their faces. Their eyes are bulging, staring, expressions contorted in pained expressions. Pale foam dribbles from the corners of their mouths. She looks up at you, "Poison. It wasn't me, if you're wondering." She comments archly, but you can hear the tension beneath it, a little joke to hide how distraught she is.

You begin trying to force your fingers down one of their throats, but she catches your hand. "Don't." She says quietly, "It's too late."

Who in the World of Men would want to poison these guards? Why? It makes no sense.

Ok so Miho is definitely in league with all this crap here.

The villagers need to run now. If we’re victorious we will seek them out later. Remove the heads of the guards. Ten bucks every dead servant and soldier still in the castle is going to get back up and be under her command.
>>
>>4699538
>[Reconsider your plans]
She is accelerating her plans. We cannot be caught by an undead army, we must get word to someone about this breach.
Go, before all the bodies rise again in service.
>>
>>4699538
Say a quick prayer for the guards and start cutting off heads. The guards wouldn’t appreciate having their corpses attack the very villagers they tried to protect.

On another note Miho being a Maho-tsukai is bad, VERY bad. The Crab might just torch the land to get this done with assuming we don't nip this in the bud hard. She's had years to thoroughly taint it all.

List of likely enemies
Horde of Zombies
Undead uncle although given hsi fucked up his body was it's unknown how efficacious he will be
Undead Bandit lord who's turned into a frog zombie thing
Nishiyama who is probably going to be buffed HARD for this if he's not just outright used as undead creation fodder
Maho-tsukai Miho.
Whatever entities she's summoned with her magic.

You just given me an idea.

Ritsu knows how to get home by herself, right? And Sayaka’s guards are still heading over here to get her back, right? Well, we have Sayaka write a note in a cypher her clansmen know how to translate about how Koumugi Castle has been taken over by the undead, or at least a quick note where she is, then tell Ritsu to head home. The guards will find Ritsu because they’ll be looking out for any clues where their charge is, and hopefully they’ll arrive in time to help out. And if they aren’t, at least they’ll know what happened, and can inform the nearest Crab legion about it.

"Stand aside." You state grimly. The pieces have fallen into place already, all of this is just confirmation. You draw your sword, and behead them one by one, the only mercy you have to give.

Aunt Miho was going to act as shugenja at the funeral, wasn't she? Strange, you never heard of her being addressed as one, or casting spells at all, which doesn't fit with the few shugenja you've met. They all did their best to make everyone aware they were shugenja, and given the Centipede Clan's reputation as a Clan of priests closely tied to the kami, surely she would have taken on the appropriate gravitas for her station. Of course, if she had some reason for not wanting a Kuni on the castle grounds, it would make much more sense.

"Sayaka, can you write a note in some sort of cypher your clansmen can translate? Tell them that the dead have risen, give the note to your horse, and tell her to go back to them." Your sword rises. Your sword falls.

Sayaka pouts, "How did you know I could do that?"

"A man assumes everything of his lover, it's the way of things." You reply, and are favored with a sweet smile before she gets out a small scroll and begins fussing with it.

"I'll be back quickly." She promises. "I need a flat surface to write on, and I'll need to send Ritsu off. She will be fine on her own."

You nod, and she does as she promised. Before long, she returns, and the three of you begin making your way back up the steps towards Koumugi Castle, the ancestral fortress of the Arinaga family.

A fortress now in the hands of a witch.

Just making your way through the gatehouses and up the switchbacks towards the first level sets your teeth on edge. There are sounds you associate with a fortress at night, and those sounds that aren't completely gone are oddly muted.

You hear none of the faint rattle of armor and occasional muffled conversation as guards walk along the wall, nor see the flickering light of their lanterns. You find the bodies of more guards in each of the guardhouses, and realize with a sick feeling just how truly bad this is. Still, you take your sword, and put the fine blade to the bitter work of removing their heads. It is a Crab-made sword, and will not dull or break from this.

However what you truly expected to see does not come into view until you enter the castle grounds themselves. A few of the castle servants, ones you hadn't spoken to before, are dragging away the bodies of some of the guards. Their motions are stiff, unnatural, akin to those of a marionette. Dried foam flecks their chins, and their eyes bulge in an unseemly way, their heads lolling on their necks. Even the way they drag the bodies is inhuman. Inefficient, simply grabbing the nearest part and pulling until they move, even if it means they get stuck on obstacles or slip free of their grasp occasionally.

You hear Sayaka gag, and see her clasp her hands over her mouth, sinking to her knees. You don't need to see her eyes to read the horror in every line of her form at this blasphemy. Surely she has heard of the dead rising, but seeing it? No, she hasn't done that before. A samurai who can face any living foe boldly can still falter in the face of the undead.

Yoshi lowers his head, praying softly as his one, muscular arm tightens into a fist. He begins wrapping his hand in cloth, tying it in place with a string of wooden prayer beads. Protection against touching these corpses with his bare hands, to preserve his kharma.

Your sword is already in your hand, "Sayaka. Listen to me. Aim for their heads. Destroy those, and they will fall. Do not let them touch you, if you can. They are slow, but their bodies will not stop moving unless beheaded or hacked to pieces."

With that, you charge.

A fair warning, the gloves are off a bit in this quest compared to past quests, and you are in a very dangerous place. This is also the most dangerous part of Daisuke's arc (Daisuke's first arc, if he survives). Remember that a samurai's life is cheap, and he is never more than three feet from death. >tfw the cost and process to make most green energy is super high in emissions

>and the resultant materials are typically toxic/horrifically non-biodegradable.

Nuclear is the way to go. And fuck anyone who thinks otherwise.
>>
>>4716506
Man many renewables are easy to recycle so that material can be kept using. Why fight for nuclear or renewables when you can have both. They both have their merits and cover eachothers weaknesses.
>>
>>4716506
>>4716536
It's good to keep in mind that green energy can be unreliable in the best of times. Texas recently experienced rolling blackouts because 40% of its energy was produced by windmills, which mechanically froze from extreme temperature changes, causing that 40 to go to 0 within a day.

#nuclear4life
>>
>>4716557

I agree with you that green energy is unreliable, but with Texas keep in mind that the mechanical failure the wind turbines suffered was mirrored by the exact same failure of their gas turbines; their infrastructure simply wasn't built to withstand those temperatures.
>>
>>4716764
I know, but all the Green New Deal type bullshit the socialists try to pull makes the green energy failures stick out in my mind. Never forget, they alway try to subsidize failure, which leads to continuous, nonstop failure until the whole system implodes on itself, and it frustrating to watch people go along with it because of a nonsensical doomsday scenario that's always 5 years away.
>>
>>4716820
I don't know about you, anon, but where I live the climate has changed noticeably between 30 years ago and now. We're getting snow maybe 8 days total per winter now.
Also this "always 5 years away" is just media trying to translate boring research data into attention grabbing headlines. It isn't 5 years away, but it will happen if we do nothing. Have you ever seen rants about dumb abbos destroying the Australian forests? The future rants will be about you.
>>
>>4716820

It's all good anon, and I'm no fan of the Green New Deal either.
>>
>>4716536
There are only three good renewable energy sources. One of them is absolute dogshit, one of them can only be done in places with big heat and no cloudcover, and the other tends to be a titanic anal gaping when it goes wrong.

Also solar is garbage.
>>

Chernobyl disaster was the result of doing something so far outside of it's design constraints, and a poor design feature that was done to save on costs that tipped things over the edge, and Fukushima was 60 years old and the result of something that couldn't exactly be planed against; a strong enough earthquake / Tall enough Tsunami would cause the same thing to happen.

A modern reactor could be designed to use pellets instead of rods which solves both problems handily and would be perfectly safe, and limit fallout to 100's of grams instead of kilograms of active material.

We need Orbital Solar Arrays that beam energy back down.
No cloud cover in space, they can be set up to be in an orbit so they always face the sun.
And as a bonus they reduce the amount of light that actively hits the planet helping reduce global temp.
Only hitch is the beaming energy down technology that's lagging behind for this set up to be currently useable. And while a tether cable could be used that does then mean that the arrays orbit would not always face the sun.
And where I grew up used have glacier caps on the surrounding mountains all year long, now they only have snow cap a few month of the year at the peak of winter and the area has seen a drastic change in temp and annual rain fall....

>>4717251
>not just making a partial dyson sphere with fixed rotation so the Earth is always getting the sunshine it needs

If you want to go big fancy space bullshit you have to go BIG FANCY SPACE BULLSHIT. Even still, we'd need to clear up the metric fuckload of debris in orbit before we should even consider putting any sort of megastructures around our planet. Last thing you need is billions of dollars down the drain because a toilet from a former observation shuttle hit your solar farm at mach 15.
>>
>>4717251
Global warming is a bit of a scam 90% of emissions come from industry, and off that 40% are coal based powerplants in China and India, and the majority of the remainder is oil / gas extraction. None of the solar or consumer efforts will actually change anything.
>>
>>4717285
>Partial Dyson sphere
You are clearly thinking on a larger scale than me.(although understandable since I mentioned reducing the amount of sunlight hitting the planet) Besides a swarm of small solar farm satellites is probably the best way to go over a single large solar installation desu.
But you are correct, we need to clear a lot of shit out of orbit in the coming years if we want to continue with any level of space expansion.
Space solar is just the best way to go with Solar energy as it eliminates so many of the drawbacks with conventional solar farms.
We are at a point where there is legitimate discussion about lunar mining and fabrication, if corporations and governments are going to build orbital or lunar infrastructure for mining then at least some of the materials and fabrication equipment will already be up there for future projects like solar farms.
I'm not saying it's an immediate solution or even one we will likely see fully completed in our lifetime if even started at all.

Most people don't realize the Earth has always had temperature fluctuations. They think the Ice Age was a one off. Really there have been plenty. If the Earth wants to heat up or cool down there's not much anyone can do about it right now.

Should still down our emissions though. Just because smog is annoying. The less cities where masks are needed for your daily health from shit air quality the better.
>>
>>4717299
Yes just like the current environmental plastic plague, large corporations are responsible for nearly all of the pollution.
Except most government figures are in their pocket so all the blame is laid at the feet of the consumers and they're told to change their lifestyles to fix it, even if it's only a token solution.
It doesn't mean it isn't a happening or isn't a problem. Just that many of the proposed solutions aren't real solutions.
>>
>>4717317
>>4717323
If Governments wanted to fix the problem they could fix it practically over night, the only problem is that the fixes would cause massive holes on the availability of electricity in most places, or cost lots of money to make up the deficit that has to come from somewhere.

Businesses don't want to pay because the money has to come from somewhere either their profit margins which their investors won't be happy with, or prices will increase which the market won't support so nothing happens.

The government could pay but can't justify the expense to the voter, or ensure that it would be spent properly so it doesn't happen
>>
>>4717317
Earth has never had such quick temperature changes before though. Yeah, temperature fluctuated, but on a scale of tens of thousands of years, not fucking decades.
>>
>>4716557
This is absolutely incorrect. ~28% of our energy is from Wind and it wasn't the failure of the wind turbines that caused the failure. The plurality of our power, about 47%, (Texas actually has a very diverse power portfolio) is from natural gas and natural gas is EXTREMELY susceptible to cold temps. They hydrocarbons basically turn into solid gunk in the pipes. Our entire system wasn't weatherproofed, almost half our power plants went offline due to the freeze and most of those were natural gas plants. So at the same time we're LOSING power production capability, the demand is skyrocketing. Power needs to ebb and flow at the same rate as demand and if they get out of sync you get catastrophic failure of the entire grid.

Both wind turbines AND natural gas plants went offline due to the freeze knocking them out of commission.

This isn't the fault of liberals and there dumb green energy, this is the fault of having a privately run system that refused to winterize its equipment even though they were explicitly warned that this would happen in 2011.

Also, samurais are cool.

the Oil / Gas / Utilities tend to all have their largest operators be state owned / run if not completely nationalized because that was the easiest way to source the capital needed to get into the business since they profits are either extremely low or heavily dependent on already having the needed infrastructure (especially for the refinement of common sulfur rich; lower quality oil ) and access to good external market (as of 2010 they made up 75% of total production, and 90% of proven reserves).

The real issue, according to some texans I talk with is that Texas isn't part of the rest of the Nation's nuclear grid, so they couldn't briefly mooch off the rest of the nation's grid when theirs went down. Which is why more people died there than in the -1 degree weather than the -40 polar vortex in my own state of Minnesota. Winterization might've played a role too, but laying the blame on Green Energy is dishonest. Texans have to demand companies invest in infrastructure bringing energy in and out of the state, or this bullshit will happen again.
>>

>>
>>4717828
You mean energy production is so important that most nations nationalize it and sometimes use it as a source of revenue. The Gulf States have done this to great effect, do to cheap oil production, but most socialist countries, Venezuela for example due to their large oil reserves, ran their country into the ground from mismanagement and corruption.

>>4717852
I would love some level of corporate responsibility as well, but the government responsibility tops everything, and you'll see that lack of political responsibility in the next 2-4 years. You can already see it happen with Andrew Cuomo getting Julius Caesar-ed in New York, Gavin Newsom getting recalled, and Ted Wheeler letting his city burn to the ground; and that's just on the local level.

I'd say a lack of transparency and accountability inevitably leads to corruption and inefficiency, no matter the institution. There is no incentive to keep them effective, and even less to keep them honest. I'm not defending the corporations, in fact many are quite awful, but there ability to harm society is pitiful compared to an unchecked and corrupt government. It's simply the lesser of two evils.

>>4717865
The federal government is making that case in an attempt to take control of Texas' power grid in a power grab against the state government. Texans would be wise to avoid that, otherwise it'll happen when the Feds decide to turn it off themselves.

Without wading too deep into this the solution isn't "ban all planes". I'm an environmentalist myself, but I know from bitter experience of a time before the overton window shifted that left-wing environment policy boils down to a lot of celebrities taking private jets to summits where they hobnob with other celebrities and talk, and talk, and talk, and at the end agree that they're all very good people on the right side of history and accomplish nothing. Meanwhile on the right you have Ducks Unlimited actually saving the wetlands because the duck hunters are willing to put their boots on and do the work. If you want to solve the emissions problem, stop trying to cripple people like Elon Musk for not having enough disabled lesbian Samoans in upper management, scrape together all the money you would usually spend on useless government boondoggles like studying the sexual identity of child soldiers in Botswana, and offer bounties on major technological innovations in the field of clean energy and emissions-free cars. Slowly but steadily, capitalism is MAKING the technology, and we'll get it done unless that horse-faced cunt Cortez gets her way. The Green New Deal is just a path for all of the little people to be reduced to serfdom, not permitted to travel or make unauthorized energy expenditures, while the Party continues to travel in private jets, as in every commie country ever.

My knee jerk reaction is to deride all greenies for doing what they did with nuclear on the payroll of oil.

Oil for cars is fine. it is the most effective carburant. But we could have shifted over to nuclear for the far larger transport industries and all the energy industry. All the coal power plants, the various freighters, trains, etc.

Especially if nuclear was not regulated to hell and back that almost no innovation is worth pursuing, like thorium breeders who could be used and are not able to be used for fissile weaponry...

and i am sperging again on the greenies.

>If your taking wealth from the rich, what would be the incentivized the rich to make wealth
Firstly, the rich don't "make" wealth, that's not how it works. They extract it, and as long as they keep some of the wealth they extract, they will continue to. I'm not aware of anyone who proposes the government confiscate literally all wealth from the rich.
>If you give wealth to the poor, what would been the incentive for them to work
The fact that they could be living better, that they want to have purpose in their lives, passion for a topic/occupation, etc. If the only reason you can think someone would want to work is to escape crippling poverty, you're quite silly.

Thankfully this quest isn't about IRL politics kek
>>
>>4719506
>went from an agrarian monarchy to a world superpower
That wasn't due to technological advancement though. USSR imported existing technologies, and may I remind you, used repressions, forced labor, mass confiscation of property, mass forced relocations and a freaking artificial famine to achieve this?
And after that, most of the Soviet scientific advances were in the areas of warfare and space exploration. None of that ever reached the common people.
>>
>>4719506
Oh, nice to find another follower of political discourse. Btw, switching it over to /pol/ would have been more polite to the other anons, but that's your choice I imagine.

Extract. What an interesting concept. So your saying that wealth isn't created, but instead extracted from... what? Minerals, labor? Is innovation considered extractive?

Of course, no one proposes we take all the wealth from the rich, but they instead prepose government ownership of corporations as the solution, called State Capitalism. After that, it's only a step away from the abolition of private property. Then no one owns any wealth.

The problem isn't the fact that they can be living better, the problem is that if they don't work toward a better life for themselves, do they honestly deserve it? If you give them free money, what incentive is there to work? You can see how the Welfare state crippled the Black communities, because they lack the incentive to care about their own financial wellbeing. It's quite heartbreaking, desu.

That's because Communism isn't really an economic theory, but a metaphysical one. Communism is the annihilation of all systems. Socialism Would have to fail in order to bring about Communism. You should finish watching it, as it's an interesting perspective. Learning about a subject does take a lot of time and effort, and I do think what Joshua has to say has merit to it.

I'd also like to mention that the Solviets killed, starved, and abused its own people to the tune of millions. The US had accomplished more that the Solviets, with significantly less brutality and oppression. What's more interesting is the fact that Imperial Japan manage to compress 400 years of economic and political innovation into 40 years, jumping from a medieval feudal society into an industrial colonial empire that went toe to toe with the US in WW2 while trying to win their own Vietnam in China (which would be like the Vietnamese trying to invade America in size and relative population numbers).

Here are some of the AOC takes I find have merit. Maybe you'll find them illuminating.

Boom, you're very close to understanding it. The problem with central planning is that it sucks ass at producing consumer goods. That's why cars and stuff made in the USSR look like trash.
>>4719542
>wealth isn't created, but instead extracted from... what? Minerals, labor? Is innovation
Yes, all that, as well as government assistance.
>they instead prepose government ownership of corporations as the solution, called State Capitalism
Who is they? Tankies (people who like the USSR and shit) propose that, but they're extremely rare honestly. I don't see anyone else proposing this.
>if they don't work toward a better life for themselves, do they honestly deserve it
Firstly, I don't think in terms of "deserve," I just want to maximize human wellbeing. That said, we can prevent people from suffering in poverty and still let them work their way to a better life.
>You can see how the Welfare state crippled the Black communities
Absolutely not. The drug war crippled black communities. Welfare does nothing but help poor people.
>Communism is the annihilation of all systems
The real definition of communism is this: a stateless, classless, moneyless society where workers own their own means of production and things are not produced to be sold. It does require the annihilation of a lot of things, but "all systems" is a bit dramatic.
>The US had accomplished more that the Solviets, with significantly less brutality and oppression
Agreed.

That's just UBI, something Rogan has liked in the past. He seems to have no consistent principles. And that doesn't demonstrate that AOC is stupid, only that you disagree with her political beliefs.

You know you can hate a political figure without calling them dumb, right? I do it all the time.

>It's not that "communism" stifles innovation
Let me tell you a personal anecdote. My father's acquaintance once developed a method of placing the parts to be cut out of a sheet of plywood that reduced material wastage. Seeing that it works well, he went with it to a metalworking plant so that they could also implement it for making stamped metal parts.
They refused, because the plant had a quota for scrap metal production.

Welfare incentivized single motherhood, this is something even your own side doesn't contest. Fatherlessness is also the greatest indication that a boy child will grow up to be a criminal. For this, you can thank left-wing Hollywood and that cuckold Lyndon Johnson. Welfare makes the poor dependant on government handouts, and if you wanted to maximize human well-being the correct thing to do would be to kill literally every commie politician from Venezuela to Comrade Corbyn.

And that's the difference between left-wing protests and right-wing protests. Thousands of left-wingers protest and ~95% of them are entirely peaceful (real stat), the 5% remaining involves some property damage or something. Right-wingers protest and they threaten to kill politicians. The American right is incredibly violent, they commit the majority of domestic terror incidents.

>Fatherlessness is also the greatest indication that a boy child will grow up to be a criminal
Drug war, Nixon and Reagan. Cutting welfare wouldn't decrease single motherhood, if would just increase poverty and death. This is empirically correct, there is no logical justification for cutting welfare.
Personally I don't advocate for violence, I don't know why you're so obsessed with it.

>the US was putting a token effort into the space race and still spreading their techno goodies across nearly every branch of the sciences both theoretical and applied
>the soviets absolutely fucking dumped EVERYTHING into only very specific avenues of science
Man if the US had focused literally all of their resources into space like the soviets did we'd have those flying cars like the people thought we would in 1910. Hyperbole of course but you get the idea. Not truly an apt comparison.

And even more, with the monumental amount of human rights violations and animal cruelty the soviets did to get those breakthroughs was staggering. Science without ethics is fast and effective but damn.

And I know, not a single nation has clean hands in that regard but just because another is guilty doesn't mean we shouldn't still condemn them. A crime shouldn't be forgiven just because it isn't alone.

Cocaine use has a lower correlation with violent crime than growing up without a father. Maybe, just maybe, replacing black Christian fathers with literal gangbanging murderers as father figures with the enthusiastic support of the left is part of the problem?
>>
>>4719989
Black christian fathers are no more bulletproof or Crackhead-with-a-knife-proof than gangbangers. Heck, the gangbanger at least knows how to survive in a gun fight between rival dealers.

Didn't the largest right-wing protest in decades end with a single casualty (one of the protesters)?

I wouldn't call that either incredibly violent nor the majority of domestic terror incidents.

Regardless, the best way to avoid any of this rioting and protest violence or any other bullshit is to just not live in a city. Anyone who lives in a place with a population of more than 20,000 deserves even worse than they get.
>>
>>4719903
Even if we only account for the last year, the amount of deaths caused by left-wing riots was manyfold greater than those caused by righ-wing riots. The popular white supremacist mass shooter meme also fails in smearing the right as, no big suprise, mentally ill people tend to have non-coherent worldviews.Like that latest guy who supported open borders but opposed abortion. The driving force behind most mass shootings isn't idiology, it's insanity. They could be a full blown tanky or a crypto fashist and they will blow peoples brains out just the same.

You mean that the USSR could only keep up in the space race and military matters by cannibalizing their own consumer goods? Doesn't sound like an effective system at all, considering the US could do both.

I'm curious, how would you extract innovation, since I see that as the main driver of wealth creation?

Biden' administration is proposing State Capitalism as a way to bounce back from Covid. Of course they use different terminology, but it's functionally the same in the end.

Oh, a Utilitarian! You know that 'maximizing human wellbeing' only works as a harm mitigation strategy. But what is the incentive to create a better life, when all your needs are already met? Would the lazy just choose not to work? And how would you stop that laziness from infecting others?

You can see the correlation with the government implementing the Welfare state and the rise of single mother homes, and with it criminality. All Welfare did was break apart the Black family structure, which continues to cause gang violence and economic stagnation in these communities. You should look into this one yourself instead of being drawn into the surface argument that giving people welfare directly gives them a better life.

Your almost right, Communism could be interpreted as a liberation from the slavery of all oppressive systems and institutions. This goes past the surface level 'honey traps' of their rhetoric, but they include morality, tradition, family, etc. as systems of oppression. This is because they believe human nature to be 'holy', for lack of a better word, and that anything constraining human nature to be oppressive in design, and thus most be abolished. Only after all the systems of oppression have been destroyed, will Communism finally be achieved.

Are you saying only ideological consistency matters, or is utility a more useful metric? Plus, asking a former MMA fighter how to UBI would work? Kek.

>if there was ever a dumbass it would be him
>You know you can hate a political figure without calling them dumb, right?

Actually, AOC was factually wrong. She was in her office during 1/6, not the Capital building. She was not in any danger, so why the theatric storytelling? What of her crying in response to an empty lot? Plus, she inspired at least two terrorist incidents with her rhetoric, such as the attack on an ICE facility, but I guess you are a bit biased in her favor.

The left protests, cause millions, potentially billions in damages, 30 dead outright and crime to skyrocket, all of which the American people, political bystanders, will have to shoulder the burden on. Meanwhile, the police let the protesters into the Capital building, didn't cause thousands in damages, and the police murdered a protester who was already surrounded by law enforcement.

>but what about the politicians

If the politicians are fearing the people in a democracy, then they fucked up. No ifs, ands, or buts about it.

But if you're running cover for the Commies burn down businesses, you are enabling them.

Welfare would take two decades to fully impact society, from just the generational nature of it. Cutting welfare would force mothers to get married and have the father be more involved in the home life of their kids. Otherwise your just keeping people in a state of institutional poverty.

5. 5, 2, 19, 7, 3, 6. Total is 32, the Armor TN of a zombie is...10. However, I forgot that Zombies have Fear 3, so let's see how you do there.

9, 6, 9. It's a raw Willpower roll (so 3k3), plus your Honor rank. The total rolled is 24, plus 6 from Daisuke's Honor. The difficulty of a Fear roll is 5+(5x fear rating), so 20. Crushed it. If you failed, you'd suffer a -Xk0 penalty to your rolls where X is the Fear rating, so -3k0. Zombies can actually be a real problem for the wrong character, as you can see.

One of the zombies is faster than the others, and swings its fist at Yoshi while he's still wrapping his fist in cloth to avoid touching it. Sayaka uses her weapon to good advantage, but your blow is by far the swiftest.

You know how to fight these things. After all, it isn't your first time. Your horizontal, neck-height slash takes the undead serving woman's head right off. Neatly, with little effort. As the other two dispatch their targets, Sayaka struggling somewhat until she realizes that these things don't feel any pain and react little to being stabbed in the vitals rather than beheaded, you hear the shuffling footsteps of more undead approaching.

“We need to secure the gatehouse leading up to the top level.” Yoshi pants, “By the kami, I'm getting too old for this.” His fist shatters the skull of his opponent like a pine board, with a rather ugly sounding squelch.

More zombies lurch and sway as they walk towards you, out from between the buildings, a good half-dozen of them. Some are guards, some are servants, but even those who once had weapons no longer carry them. Zombies are too stupid to keep hold of anything they can't rend and bite. They could be dangerous if they attacked from behind.

>[Send Sayaka and Yoshi ahead to seize the gatehouse, clean up this rabble, and follow them]

“You go ahead, I'll take care of business here.” You inform them.

Sayaka stomps her foot, “Best of boys, must you always find ways to make me worry?”

“You make a very cute face when you're worried.” You inform her. Yoshi snorts and mutters something very Crab-like. You point at the beheaded zombie, “Aim for the neck, remove the head and they stop moving. They are slow, but stronger than they look. Take no chances, do not let yourself be bitten or clawed. Some may have forgotten to drop a broom or a weapon, but they have no wit to do more than use it as a club. Be defensive, and-”

You're cut off abruptly as she grabs the front of your cuirass and pulls you into a kiss, before playfully slapping your chest, “I think I know how to fight, Daisuke. Don't take too long, I hate waiting.” She smiles, and turns, “Let us go, monk-san.”

“...What an ominous thing to say.” Yoshi gripes, as the two of them depart. Leaving you alone, facing half a dozen foes, sword in hand.

25. Normally that would have hit you, but you have that armor TN hax from hitting enemies. If you had been hit, you would have had to make an Earth roll to avoid the Shadowlands Taint.

Keep in mind, you haven't slept because you voted to go immediately to the castle. You're not suffering fatigue, not for many hours yet, but you haven't recovered void points either, I think, and you used all of those on O-Tora.

You rolled a 19. If you had rolled less than 15, Daisuke would now be tainted. Perhaps not perceptibly so, and he actually would not be considered tainted until it got worse, but Jigoku would have extended the tip of a root-tendril into his heart. Once per month, forever, he would have to roll Earth and beat a TN of 5 to avoid gaining another point of Taint. Slowly as you gain more and more, the TN gets higher and the interval to roll shorter and shorter.

You stand there, still and motionless as a mighty oak, as the enemies of all things good and wholesome shuffle towards you. You inhale deeply, the edges of your nose crinkling at how clean the air smells, none of them have had time to decay. In a way that makes them worse. You recognize some of them. Servants who brought you and Sayaka tea, people you saw in conversation, living and animated. Guards you witnessed on patrol. For some, the sight is unmanning, and can make their limbs shake and their lips gibber.

You are utterly unmoved. You are used to this. The screaming horror is something it is your duty to witness and confront. With one easy stroke, you behead the first zombie to reach you, but the fight is not as easy as it seems. Your sword moves like lightning the moment the next of the walking dead is within reach, a swift cut on a shallow diagonal. You take off most of its lower jaw, but fail to behead it. They seek to surround you and grab at you, but it is like attempting to grab the wind. You backstep, only to move forwards again, turn so that cadaverous fingers scrape off your armor instead of gripping your hair, always moving with perfect efficiency. Your sword reaches out again, extending just enough so that the blade slices through once-living flesh, the tip just barely peeking out the back of the throat as it severs the spinal column.

Your blade is held in two hands, your strokes businesslike and methodical as if you were performing tameshigiri for a demonstration in some more refined dojo, but these do not move like living opponents, they're much more aggressive, and in a way the fact that you've been so thoroughly trained to behead corpses works against you, you haven't spent much time fighting the undead.

That is when things begin to go terribly wrong. Your arms are still extended when one of the zombies, an elderly woman who you recognize as the one who answered your questions before rakes her nails along your forearm. Your eyes bulge in pain, but it's not a serious wound and hopefully you aren't tainted. Hopefully.

Even a young man like you has seen good soldiers of the Crab get tainted. Well do you know of the berserkers, those who desperately seek to die with honor before they lose their minds and souls. It is not a fate you are eager to share. You flail your sword around one-handed, keeping the other three zombies at bay but failing to score a telling blow as you yank your arm free of the old woman's dirty nails, and stab her straight through the mouth, stepping around her body with a twist as you sever her spine and pop her head off as if she was a crayfish.

They grab and claw at you, but you're wise to them now, none of the remaining three land a blow, and one pays for it as you swing in a full-bodied blow that catches one right on the temple. The katana is an elegant weapon, for long cuts that bleed a great deal, elegant draw-strikes that prove the grace of Rokugani culture. Unfortunately, Lady Doji was the Kami interested in those things, and you are a descendant of Hida's followers, so your blow has the force of an axe behind it and cuts his head clean in half.

You turn and on your backswing you cut off not just a gardener's head, but also his upraised arm.

You bring your blade up over your head, and resist the urge to let out an empowering warcry for fear of bringing more of the undead your way, bringing the sword down in a straight chop onto the crown of one of the two remaining zombies, cutting his head in half right down the middle and chopping into his ribcage, down, down until your blade emerges from his crotch, the former guard's entrails spilling onto the ground. His hand, nails inches from your eyes, falls away, and you stand, panting, amidst the carnage.

You need to take a minute to clear your head, but not here. You clean your sword off quickly, sheathe it, and run after your companions. You find them at the end of a trail of re-killed zombies, standing in the guardhouse leading to the second set of switchbacks. They beckon you in, and bar the door.

"My lord, you...you're wounded." Yoshi's voice holds all the dread of a Crab retainer who knows how bad this could be.

"Not badly." You sigh the words out as Sayaka begins fussing over your wound, rubbing some kind of ointment on the scratches and binding them with gauze, "A good thing we were already going to summon a Kuni." You smile ruefully.

Yoshi claps you on the shoulder with his singular arm, in silent understanding. It's a difficult thing you're about to do, especially as YOU don't know that you successfully DID resist it this time. "I need to clear my head before we press on." You tell them. "Just a few minutes, to meditate."

"Take your time." Sayaka urges you, "A well-honed blade cuts deepest."

You kneel, and close your eyes.

I've taken Tea Ceremony on most of my characters, and there's nothing wrong with having both, but Meditation has a second use for Daisuke, albeit rather a dark one. See, you can use it to lengthen the amount of time you can survive without food, and if you're without food in the Shadowlands, well...you don't want to eat anything there. Really, it has a TN 20 roll to avoid the Taint if you eat Tainted food or drink, which explains O-Tora.

Jade petal tea slows it

Tears of the First Emperor remove it utterly at the cost of us dying.

The Unbroken Ronin band has a way to do so if you kill a metric Ass-ton of Shadowlands creatures, but it also burns your life away.

There's a Kiho made by the Kiniei that does it, but it's painful as fuck and can only be used once per week. It also damages the body.

There's a Living artifact called the jade hand that just yeets it and makes the wearer immune, but it's probably not something we can get our hands on. It's a big name artifact.

There's a spell that can do it too, but is likewise painful and also makes it so the caster get a small portion of the taint that expelled from you.

Then there is the blatantly evil Maho-tsukai and Bloodspeaker method, which involves forcing all your taint into someone else.

So in short, yes, but in reality, no.

Beggars get braces. Because they get hit in the teeth. With a bat. The wooden kind not the flying mammalian kind. And not one of those wimpy little bats you see in Japanese baseball but those big ass sluggers that people keep around exclusively for breaking car windows and lights for movies. And not just any movie but one of those old 80's films centered in the Bronx or otherwise northeasterly urban zones of ill repute. Not to be confused with nor'easter, which is a stormfront common during this particular season that has just begun with the coming of April. Not to be confused of course because that's how hard you're gonna get hit with the non-living locally-sourced sports-tool-cum-prop in a questionably morally aligned and likely impoverished metropolitan district as featured in media.

Inside the guardhouse, there is a little straw mat where, presumably, the guards used to sit and take breaks. You kneel on it, smoothing out your hakama, fold your hands neatly on your thighs, and close your eyes.

The world is full of distractions. The mocking whistling of the wind, as if the same evil breezes on the other side of the Wall had followed you here. The scent of blood, still fresh enough to smell coppery. The rapid beating of your heart, more rapid than you realized. As stoic as you might be, deep down you must have been affected by the blasphemy and betrayal that have struck this place. This was a bad place when you arrived, and it has become steadily worse in your estimation since. The ticking of your brain, wondering how many more of the undead there might be, shuffling around in the darkness. In the darkness outside, you hear the crack of thunder, and the sound of the first raindrops pattering against stone. Worse, though, the true distraction, is the spiritual uncleanliness of contact with a tainted creature. For many samurai, this would be intolerable, and they would be begging Yoshi for ritual purification right now. You, however, are used to this. There will be time later, if you survive. To be purified before the fighting is done is wasteful.

You breathe in through your nose, mentally counting to five. You hold it, mentally counting to five. You exhale through your mouth, mentally counting to five. Each time, you fill your lungs completely with air, then you use that air completely to regenerate your body, then you expel the used-up air completely. Breathe in. Hold. Exhale. Over and over, until you no longer have to think about it, focusing only on the sound of your breathing. For a time, the outside world no longer exists, only the inner universe. Only Arinaga Daisuke, son of Arinaga Yudai, son of Arinaga Juro whose castle this once was. You let your mind's eye drift, and you see the gleam of light on lacquer. Warm light, from a fire perhaps, shining on the saya of your katana. You feel, as well as see, the texture of the sword's guard, with its embossed map of the Crab lands marked out in threads of gold, as if you were running your thumb over it. The faintest pressure looses the blade in the sheath, and you feel the wrappings of the hilt against your palm. The firelight gleams on the exposed steel of the blade, the dark waves crashing against the pale shore. You feel its perfect balance. In your mind's eye, your body surges into motion, towards a dark figure standing before you.

In the moment of the cut, you open your eyes. Your determination is renewed, hard and sharp as the curve of a blade.

“Such a fierce expression.” Sayaka notes, her dark lips curving into a grin.

“As it should be.” Yoshi notes, “We have fierce work ahead.”

“What an overprotective chaperone!” Sayaka sighs mournfully, “May I not at least flirt with him in peace?”

“If all three of us survive, I will have no objections, but we have work to do.” The old monk stands up, apparently he had also taken the opportunity to meditate for a bit.

“Nishiyama Takeshi is mine.” You state, plainly, “I'll be fierce until he's taken care of.”

“So he is behind this blasphemy?” Yoshi asks, grimly, but with doubt in his voice. When you shake your head, he sighs bitterly, “She was always such a strange girl. So quiet, always so close to our lord.”

“Why did he bring her here?” You ask the old monk.

He shakes his head, “I asked him once. He said it was to honor an obligation, that she had nowhere else to go. I assumed...many of us did...that she was his daughter at first.”

“My aunt thought so too. At first. In her later letters she dismissed it, but by then her words were rambling and less collected than they had once been. It could have been a coping mechanism.” Sayaka frowns, tugging the brim of her jingasa.

“Your aunt?” Yoshi stares at her, then sighs, “I see. I wondered why you were here. I admit, I rather assumed something nefarious. I've not been a monk so long that I could miss the connection between you and Daisuke-sama, but I didn't see how a soldier on the Wall could meet and woo such a well-bred woman from such a far-off province. You do resemble Chouko, somewhat.” He smiles wryly, “Although only now that I know you are related. The mask gets in the way.” Then he frowns, “Still, although one could easily take from his words that Lady Miho was the product of one of his many affairs...kami forgive me for speaking ill of my former master after his death...Arinaga Toshiaki was not a perverse man. A lustful one, yes, and proud, and often cruel to those outside his heart, but I would not have thought him one to desire the company of his own daughter's bed. Although it was always a strange marriage. I had seen how he was with Chouko, at first. Later on, things were cold between them, but once upon a time he would chase her through the halls while she squealed with laughter, and write poems about the most trivial things she did...”

Sayaka begins to smile...

“...As he did with many other women.” The retired samurai finishes.

Sayaka stops smiling, and moves with just a tiny scrap of possessiveness right next to you. “Not with Miho, though?”

“No, he seemed almost...puzzled by her, sometimes. Other times, he gloated as if he knew some great secret.” He sighs, then they both look at you.

As he said that Toshiaki stated, it was to honor an obligation - some deal or bet or slight he had to repay by taking on the odd, taint-using girl. The specifics aren't important, of course - the verdict in regards to Miho are the same.
>>
>>4731776
>[Of course you know what's going on. What's your theory?]

Miho was his daughter, and Nishiyama Takeshi was supposed to be the sperm donor. We couldn't create his heir by conventional means, so he resorted to trickery and subterfuge to achieve his aims. Quite Scorpion-like, his wife must have rubbed off on him.

"I was not privy to the thoughts of my uncle, but I have thought it curious that a girl who's original clan is well known to be shugenja wouldn't make it well known to all around her. And from what little I recall, the Centipede seem to worship Amaterasu, the sun goddess. In all the time you have known Miho, Yoshi, have you ever seen her cast a spell or worship the sun directly?"

Yoshi shakes his head, “She seemed to have a distaste for shugenja, as a matter of fact. She said as much once in my hearing.”

You nod, “Perhaps it truly was an obligation, that he had to take her on, even marry her, even if he didn't care to. We can't very well ask him, his bloodline is ended...unless...what if Miho really was his daughter, after all? What if, unable to create a legitimate heir through the usual means, he found another way to pass his lands on to a descendant? Pass off his grandson as his son, with Nishiyama providing the seed? If he KNEW about O-Tora, no wonder he was so contemptuous of the peacock! An illegitimate daughter cannot inherit, but a wife can, particularly with a son IF said son was presumed to be his, and who would ask if it was? No wonder he wanted me present, to acknowledge the child. He was laughing at me the whole time, at everyone. His greatest trick, he said.”

“Then Shirou would not be the legitimate heir.” Yoshi points out. “It is illegal to marry one's daughter, the marriage would be null and the infant dispossessed.”

“If there was anyone to attest to it.” Sayaka notes, “And if she was an orphan...hm.”

As you talk, you step forward out of the guardhouse, and up the final set of switchbacks towards the upper level, where the keep itself is situated and where the family lives, in normal times. Bodies of guards and servants lie here and there in pools of cloth, and one by one, you behead them. The heads roll down the switchbacks like obscene kemari balls, but there is no help for that. Burning them will have to wait.

>[Of course you know what's going on. What's your theory?]

Uncle got crippled at the Wall, and became infertile somehow. He got mad at Chouko when he came back, both because of her disgust and not having an heir with her. Miho came by originally as a way to honour obligations, since Toshiaki almost certainly made a ton of enemies over the years.

Miho likely was planning on using Peacuck for a sperm donor, since she likely knew that Toshiaki was infertile from her use of Maho, and that Chouko didn't have any children. Plan D with Peacuck is taking forever though because his sperm count is as frail as his morale fibre. She then decided to use O-Tora to get an heir, to appease Toshiaki's intentions.

After the baby is confirmed, Miho starts using Tainted sake to try and sever the O-Tora loose end. Toshiaki bites it either from his growing illness or removing bandit, and Peacuck is stuck with her as a love-lorn yojimbo. Everyone who knows what is actually happening is a corpse, and she gets what she wants with a castle, lands, and a son that she can pass on her teachings to.

“Why would she send her servants to collect the farthest bodies first? Isn't that inefficient?” Sayaka asks, puzzled.

“Probably because she assumed we wouldn't be coming here tonight. If we did, our quarters were back there.” You gesture over your shoulder, “We would have no reason to come up here. We would return to a quiet castle, and while puzzled, likely not realize the danger until the dead had closed the way behind us. She couldn't have counted on the guards finally choosing to go out and fight against orders, and inadvertently revealing the truth. Assuming she expected us to return at all, and not a triumphant O-Tora here for his son.”

“...I wonder how Nishiyama-kun will feel about being cuckolded by a bandit.” Sayaka notes.

“You cannot be cuckolded by a woman you aren't sleeping with.” You note. “If he got what he wanted, he would be harder to control. While her husband was alive, perhaps that kept him at bay, but now? No wonder she has him guarding the body, he probably has his heart set on sharing her bed the night of the funeral.”

“It would not surprise me.” Yoshi's voice turns grim as you reach the last gatehouse.

Sayaka tries the door, and tsks when she finds it locked, rolling up her sleeves and probably preparing to climb it until Yoshi casually pulls out a large key on a string around his neck, and unlocks it, “I was the senior retainer here, once.” He reminds her.

Inside, the gardens that once struck you as such a palatial paradise are silent, and still. No insects chirp. No nightbirds call out to each other. You see the light of an approaching lantern, though, and are startled to see the two servant women who were there when your uncle had his fatal fall down the stairs.

One of them slips off her sandals, turns, and runs away into the darkness towards the main tower, the other hurries forward with an ingratiating smile, “Young Master Arinaga, it is so good to see you again...”

Wong plz......
On one hand, Miho could have spared het personal favourite servants as she will need living servants to serve her in any task that isn't just brute force
On the other crabier hand
Any spared servants are potentially already tainted or poisoned and don't know they are already dead. Or worse yet are aware of what is happening.......
Either way we can't risk a tainted, poisoned or aligned with a witch servant leave the castle............

She is suspect here. The zombies are everywhere, and anyone who is still living here is on her side. I would have had some reservations about it, but they went running to the tower instead of asking about what was happening in the village. A bunch of guards leaving makes a racket after all.

Without even hesitating, you draw your sword and slash deeply across the servant woman's ribs, dropping her to the ground with a gurgle. Her lips move and some kind of scarlet fire crackles around her fingers for a moment, before she falls unconscious. "Behead her." You instruct, sticking your sword into the ground and drawing your bow.

Even in the darkness, the other witch cannot run fast enough. Physically, no matter what taint she possesses, she is still mostly a normal human woman, and with no martial training. Your arrow strikes her cleanly in the spine at the base of her neck, and she drops as if poleaxed. You retrieve your sword, walk over to her, and...cautious of her getting back up...remove her head in a single blow. Your blade drinks deep tonight.

Sayaka retrieves the dropped lantern gingerly, and the three of you make your way towards the castle without suffering the horrible, debilitating effects of whatever godawful blood magic a certain Wong might have been hypothetically looking up during that suspiciously quiet period.

Curses.

It is eerily quiet as you enter the castle. No guards, no servants. Only the howl of the wrathful winds, the crack of thunder, and the sound of rain pattering off the building and the leaves of the trees. It comes slowly at first, a few droplets, then a few more, but by the time you pass through the main door it has become a deluge. Bodies lie scattered here and there, lit by the dim and guttering lamps, with a large pile of corpses outside, but it is not until your foot touches the steps that you hear the sounds of movement. Zombies, a mere dozen of them, stumble through the rice-paper sliding doors and shamble towards you.

Who knows how many more she could have raised if you had come here tomorrow? Perhaps not an insurmountable number, but it would have been much, much more difficult.

The undead are all on the first floor, blocking your retreat. Perhaps if you had come here tomorrow, there would be a dozen above as well?

“Go, we can handle this.” Sayaka grins at you, leveling her bisento.

>[Stay and fight, three samurai can make short work of these devils]

Three can fight well enough while watching each other's backs. If we confront her alone, we run the risk of being turned against them with her foul magic.
>>
>>4732077
Not to mention the chance we may have to face both the cuckoo and Miho at once.
>>
“I know. Come back to me.” You steal a kiss from Sayaka for luck, which Yoshi thankfully pretends not to see, and pelt up the stairs, your steel naked in your hand. Another servant woman, who appears to have been hiding in ambush waiting to do something awful aimed at your turned backs, jumps up as you run by, slashing her own arm with a tanto...but even as the blood starts to steam, you cut her down without slowing and keep running up the steps.

It could be a trap, but if it is, you see no sign of it until you hear the sound of a baby squalling, and follow it to your uncle's former quarters.

There, in the room where your uncle once lay dying, Arinaga Miho sits in splendor. She wears a kimono of vivid, nigh-pearlescent white with patterns in the silk that vaguely resemble sharp claws reaching out to caress the curves of her body, resting on a pile of cushions with Shirou in her arms. She smiles languidly, “Nephew, it is so good to see you.” Behind her, the windows he used to look out are drawn wide open, giving a magnificent view of the chaotic weather beyond. A void of night, full of raindrops blown hither and yon by the raging winds and lit by the braziers that light the room. “You are early.” She sounds disappointed.

By her side, already in a stance with his hand on the hilt of his sword, is Nishiyama Takeshi. He is clad in a truly magnificent, or at least magnificently gaudy, suit of light armor that covers his torso, head, shoulders, forearms, and calves. The helm has two peacock plumes in lieu of horns, and a mempo shaped like a phoenix's beaked visage. Every plate, from the tassets to the shoulder-guards, is shaped like brilliantly crimson flames trimmed in gold.

“Nephew, or cousin?” You ask.

Her eyes narrow, “Ah, I see. You have worked it out.” She gestures to herself and the baby, “My father's greatest trick. An illegitimate daughter and an illegitimate grandson become a wife and a legitimate son, all with a few words. Forever denying you the lands that, as his oldest brother's son, would otherwise be yours by right.”

“I am a Hiruma vassal, and these lands are a Yasuki fief.” You point out.

She waves her hand dismissively, “Whatever. Father enjoyed the game, I'm happy he is at peace, even if his last years were dominated by such a fantasy. There were truths, grand truths, he was not prepared for.” She sighs bitterly, “I so hoped that when he returned from his tour of duty, his longed-for time of glory, which I so fervently encouraged that we would have more in common. He returned, beautified on the outside, but still just a man within. What a disappointment. He was a good father. If you are wondering anything perverse, no, he never touched me. Many have, and all but one I was able to dispose of...and that last one, you were kind enough to help me with. Mostly.” She closes her eyes, “I can feel his presence, his rage. Despite this, there is still only one man I love.”

“Who?” You ask, baffled by this.

Nishiyama makes an outraged sound, “You bastard. You know she means me.”

“I'm the bastard?” You point your sword at him, “Doesn't the Topaz Champion get a special helmet? Where might it be, Takeshi the Butcher?” You call him by an Eta's title.

No, she's just leading you around by your peacock until such a time as she believes her son, the only man she has any love for, can stand on his own. O-Tora's son.” You step forward.

“We are samurai! There are procedures for dueling!” His knuckles turn white on his fancy blade's fancy hilt. The tsuba are shaped like interlocked wings, the pommels like screaming bird heads. There is a feather pattern in the lacquer all down the saya, ending in a spray of gilt plumes at the end. “She does love me. You heard her, one man she loves. She told me that even though her father said she could only lay with Crab while he was alive, her heart belongs to only one. Who else could it be?”

Miho bursts out laughing, and he turns to look at her. You can see how appalled he is in his stance, “Kill him, Takeshi.” She purrs. “For me.”

“You are a witch's yojimbo, Nishiyama Takeshi. A protector of a Maho-Tsukai. You will get no honors due a samurai!” You step forward, blade in hand. “You deal with bandits, you die like a bandit!”

“A witch? What...I...you're lying!” You remember abruptly that he was guarding your uncle's body, day and night if your memory of the proper etiquette is correct. He would not have left the room until just now. In short, he doesn't know.

“Is that how I have solved my problems so far? Has she let you go downstairs? Perhaps you've wondered where the servants are. Or the guards. Why would I just burst in here alone? She's killed everyone else in this castle besides a few accomplices, and brought them back as her minions with the aid of her vile magic.”

“Vile?” Miho's tone turns suddenly venomous, the smug pride and sense of victory melting away, as if that word, and that contempt, were somehow all too familiar, “Whose magic is vile!? Whose magic is wrong!? Your cruel kami never spoke to me, not even when I begged them to! Not even when my mother beat me, demanding to know why her husband had killed himself over my existence, why my father ignored her pleas to visit her, why I could not even master the prayers and succeed her as the high priestess of her temple!” Her bosom rises and falls as she begins to hyperventilate, her teeth bared, “You don't know what it's like. You have never wanted something so badly you cried for it every night, and then...then when the voices finally answer, and the power rushes in like a tide...” Her eyes glitter with hate, “She called it vile too, when I showed her. She tried to burn me, but I made her prayers turn to razor shards in her throat.” Her lips spread wide, “And as she choked on the floor, I burned her precious temple around her, and anyone who knew me with it.”

“N-no...no it can't...you can't...” Takeshi's voice turns shrill.

“Oh, be silent. You've always been a good boy about eating everything I made for you, no matter the taste. You've drank spoonfuls of my blood by now, unknowing.” She extends her hand, and you see his muscles go rigid as you break into a run, your sword aimed for her, “Kill Arinaga Daisuke and protect me.”

His sword whips from its saya, and he moves to intercept you.

She smiles, “Anyone who has tasted my blood is subject to my will. It's convenient, but...for people like you who have not shared my table, I must use different means. Keep him busy, Takeshi-kun.” She smiles, drawing a tanto from her sleeve, and slicing open her palm, holding her hand up and beginning to mumble nonsense words to herself. It sounds like glossalia, not real speech, a child imitating spellcasting, and yet something about the tone makes your skin crawl.

But you have no time for that. No matter how hesitant Nishiyama Takeshi was to face you in a real fight, not a formal duel, he no longer has a choice. She is in command of him. You can't feel sorry for him, up until this point his actions have earned death already.

Earth x5 for healthy then x2 for each subsequent rank.

“...Good. I've wanted to kill you ever since I saw your face.” He snarls. “Damn you, all of this is your fault!”

As you both swing your blades, you realize something.

You're not going to lose this fight.

Is he a better swordsman than you, in terms of pure skill? Absolutely, his technique is flawless, and yet it lacks any sort of courage. He was a great prodigy, once. At the time of his gempukku, certainly. Yet, ever since, he has been in semi-exile or playing at being a lordling while you spent every day honing your technique and spirit. Moreover, on some level he knows it. His sword is afraid of yours. For all of his skill, he flinches at the first stroke, and your blade bites first. It strikes across the inside of his elbow, a long, dragging cut that spatters the tatami mats with blood.

Your false aunt's blood on her palm begins to bubble, and you hear a sound of licking, as if invisible tongues are lapping at her hands, sucking away the blood.

He screams, reeling back, and puts everything into a wild, one-handed blow. The strength behind it is palpable, his technique fantastic despite his wound, his fingers sliding down to the very end of the pommel for extra range...and yet you duck it nearly effortlessly, step forward, and drive your sword in a perfectly precise blow into his thigh. Blood fountains. You twist your sword, and rip it up the length of his leg to the crotch, ripping your sword out from his groin.

He staggers, stumbles, and collapses, clutching himself and screaming for all of a moment before shock and the sheer amount of blood loss overwhelm him, and he falls unconscious at the heart of a spreading pool of crimson.

Miho's voice rises into a wail of joy as the blood rises in veils of carmine mist from her palm, as if illuminating the inside of the blasphemous spirits that have ingested it.

The bloody mists dissipate, and a flicker of black lightning crosses over her skin. She takes her tanto, holds up her arm, and presses it as hard as she can against her flesh. Wherever the blade passes, the blackness spreads, as if darkness itself was keeping the blade at bay, “It worked.” She remarks proudly, “I've won. I'm as invulnerable as an oni to your pathetic blade.” She glances down at the dying Takeshi, “Hm-hm-hm, and with so much blood to work with...oh, how shall I kill you? Entomb you in the earth? Turn the breath in your lungs to blades? Pour the taint into you until you burst from it? Oh it will be so much fun, watching you helplessly try to break through my defenses with your blade.” She sets Shirou down in his cradle, and steps towards you, her wounded hand dripping blood onto the tatami mats. “Maybe I'll cut you to pieces, slowly, with nothing but my knife?” She gasps suddenly, “Oh, perhaps I'll do to you what I did to the last Lady Arinaga? I made her walk right off this very roof with my powers. She deserved it, she was getting far too close to figuring out what I was. She was so cruel to me, I could scarcely resist letting the kansen play with her mind, but she was figuring it out, so...she had to go.” You hear a clash of blades from the stairs, and her expression twists with irritation.

“And then what? Once I'm dead, and everyone in the castle is dead, do you imagine it ends there?” Your voice is flat, “The entire province will hunt you down for killing so many, witch.”

She smiles coldly, “I? Killed anyone? Oh no. I think you'll find the truth as I present it makes far more sense to the average dullard of this dying Empire. There is, after all, a hidden passage between the bandit lair and this castle, is there not?” Her smile widens, her teeth utterly human yet looking somehow sharp and sinister with the width of her grin, “The bandits grew tired of raiding the town, and slipped someone in to poison the food that went into the evening meal. How lucky I was to be feeling unwell that evening. When I am the sole survivor, who can question my testimony without seeming to make an avaricious grab for my lands? I will throw myself upon my Yasuki liege's sandals and I will sob. I am very good at crying, you know. Perhaps some suspicious Kuni will test me with jade, but given a little time to prepare, my abilities make me as immune to it as you are. I am what the man I love shaped me into, a perfect instrument of his will. More soldiers will be sent, and more servants, and no one who knows enough of the past to make any inconvenient inferences will remain to trouble me. This place shall be my paradise, my nest, from which to raise my beloved's greatest champion-to-be. What a pity that, in the process of dispatching the bandits and saving me, you, your lover, and the loyal former retainer of my husband all perished together with O-Tora. Such heroes you were. I shall never forget you.”

You understand what she did, you think (and maybe some of those dice got converted into a Lore: Shadowlands roll to understand what the Invulnerable property means). Any strike you make against her with a mundane weapon, even a fantastic one like your sword, will do virtually nothing (1 Wound per strike max). Only weapons made of jade, crystal, obsidian, nemuranai, or magic will harm her now.

"I look forward to showing this place to my love, once I am secure here and have reshaped it to my liking. When I walked, orphaned and alone, out of that burnt temple...I thought I was lost, until I met a boy. The most beautiful boy I had ever seen. My prince. He took me by the hand, and led me on an adventure. He explained how special I was, and how special my powers were, and with each touch of his hand, I became more special still. More powerful. He called to my father in his dreams, and guided him to me, clouded his thoughts to make him think it was his own idea to come save me." She sounds almost dreamy.

>[What do?]
>>
>>4732313
My immediate ideas are two: Just hit her so many times that 1 wound per strike max is enough to do the job.

However, the more reasonable plan, perhaps, would be to take the baby hostage. Though, that might not be particularly honorable.

Those are my suggestions, hope I see some more constructive, non "last ditch" ideas from other anons.
>>
Hoo, it's actually very late. Game continues tomorrow, should give you time to strategize.
>>
>>4732315

>>4732313
>Keep her talking, then throw her out the window

>>
Any strike=Unable to deal more than 1 damage?

Well, Spitballing, how good are we at grappling/subduing via strangling?
Alternatively, we could try and disarm her and use her knife, that might be magical, but I don’t give good odds.
How easy is it to spell cast while in a chokehold?

Would take another honor hit, but running might be the best call.
>>
>>4732317
>>4732319
I have my doubts it'd finish the job but it's a better lead than "just keep hitting her"
>>
>>4732321
Make her choke on our jade, then throw her out the window. She hasn't had any time to prepare against the jade.

Or can fire work?
>>
>>4732323
Jamming a finger of jade into her eye is certainly better than nothing - it might not be a good weapon, but if I had a magical gem pencil and had to fight someone immune to things that aren't magical, i'd probably try it.
>>
>>4732323
We dont have jade on us, I checked. As a crab domain, there should be stocks of powdered jade somewhere but we'll need to retreat. Unless of course our monk friend has some on him.
>>
>>4732317
Alternatively, how about using our sword as a lightning rod, jamming it into her kimono, and hoping with all our heart that Osano-Wo'll be interested in having a shot at Miho with some guidance from Yoshi?

Well, you do have jade on you, technically, the jade finger Yoshi gave you. That's all the help I'll give you.

>>4732309
>>4732313
"Must be some boy for you to have fallen for him. Did he bid you do this or was going to be your offering to him?"

Stall for time with words, get her to monologue like a villainess. Find that finger of jade that we got and grip it tight out of sight, maybe positioning our body to hide it. Grip it tight enough to powder it, a handful of jade powder with which to prep out loyal blade, so that it may cleave this head from this bloodspeaker.
>>
>>4732313

We could retreat to where Yoshi and Sayaka are and regroup to source some jade powder. Either that, or grab the child to bring with us. so that she follows. She'll avoid making us jump from the roof or entombing us in the earth with her son as a hostage. Not exactly the honourable thing to do, but there is no honour to be found in this foul witch's nest.

Stabbing her with the finger of jade might work too, especially if we aim for a soft spot like the eye or throat. Probably don't have enough time to try and crush it to powder our blade though.
>>
>>4732332
So what if we tied it into an arrow and used best boy Bow-Kun to shoot our makeshift jade arrow strait through her evil heart?
>>
By the way, you have 7 exp currently. If you want to spend 6 of it to boost your Jiujutsu to 3, that would be acceptable since I see suggestions leaning that way.
>>
>>4732343

Doing that would certainly cause the arrow to inflict full damage, yes...but if you miss there goes your jade until her spell wears off.

Thankfully this isn't Swamp Lord Quest where sorcery is just a Skill and mages can cast whatever they know how to do all day and all night.
>>
>>4732340

If it's protruding between the knuckles your punches would do full damage, yes. If you have it in your palm and grapple her you'll do full grapple damage, similarly.
>>
>>4731791
Nice sleuthing, anon.

>>4732309
Huh, I figured Miho murdered Chouko as a revenge for her spurning our uncle, but she had been egotistic there as well.

>>4732313
>Jujutsu her, tie her up and wait until her spell runs out.
>>
>>4732359
Or even better, don't wait and just drown her in a bucket or choke her with a pillow. Maho-tsukai still need to breathe.
>>
>>4732345

Yeah, if we're going for the principles of CQC, we should boost it now for that extra die. Not sure how high it'll be to hit her, so take what advantage that we can get. Stat boosts never ever.

>>4732343

The other issue is that one bow shot might not be enough to put her down. Jiujutsu isn't much better because it's a 2k1 (3k1 if we boost it to 3) for damage with our Strength 2, but we'll have the benefits of being able to hit her more. Hopefully we get some 10s to speed things up with explosions before she gets more spells off or some lucky cuts in with her tanto.
>>
>>4732348
In that case, I actually fully support punching her with jade.
>>
>>4732359
Thank you! I figured it out in the third thread, so it felt great to reveal it now. Make sure you gag her, we don't want any more spells coming out of her mouth.

>>4732363
Or we could do this as well.
>>
So, get the jade in our hand, do some hand-to-hand work, and if an opportunity presents herself, take her down or knock her out the window, then?
>>
>>4732366
Just like dat Sense boost, amirite?

Either way, we should have at least 1 exp in Jiujutsu, just to make it explode. Just keep jabbing her in the throat, and disarm her of her weapon, and she basically finished. She isn't a warrior after all, so we should be able to overpower her still.

>>4732372
Ye.
>>
>>4732359

Scanning it over again, there's the sound of clashing blades from downstairs too. So long as we keep her focused on us, Sayaka and Yoshi are probably on their way. It'll be easier to handle her when they get here, we just need to stall her out so that we can gang up on her ass. inb4 Yoshi ingested some of her blood while he was a retainer, and gets turned against us.
>>
>>4732376
That spoilered idea is why i'm more into the direct >>4732372 approach instead of trying to stall her and wait for backup.

>>4732378
Beat her in the head until shes silly and cant concentrate on casting.
>>
>>4732374
>Just keep jabbing her in the throat, and disarm her of her weapon
We could also grapple her as the kami intended when inventing jujutsu.
>>
>>4732382
Good point. If we put our sword away first, we might lull her into thinking we're giving up or something, which will make then rushing forward and introducing our fists to her face more surprising to her - She's already convinced she's powerful, and seeing us put our sword away will probably make her think we are afraid or resigned. Good time to strike.
>>
On the one hand I just want to fucking strangle her. On the other I ain't interested in fucking around in handsy range with a tainted ass hoe. Even less when the bitch has a knife. If we were outside I'd try to shove her into a well and collapse it onto her.

Should we perhaps light the castle on fire and wait to see where she comes out? Surely by then her spell will have worn thin. Or she'll have been given enough bad touch by 300 fahrenheit for it to not matter how invulnerable she is.
>>
>>4732389
That was the backup plan until the jade appeared. No, im pretty sure that mundane damage wont do and shes got a whole castle worth of servant zombies and dead acolytes whom she can draw blood from to cast that spell again.
>>
>>4732389
If we can leave the castle before it's engulfed in fire, so can she.
>>
>>4732389
I honestly can't see how running away and trying to start a castle on fire to see if that works while a knife-wielding mage is what we're dealing with is more likely to work than taking a few steps forward and removing her ability to cast.

We have size, dynamism, tactics and backup on her side. She's a young, self-absorbed crazy person who thinks she's already won.

I just have less than zero interest in getting her tainted blood on or in us if she happens to stick us with her bloody emo knife. She'll scratch, bite, and bleed all over us. Not really thrilled by the idea of grappling.

But all I know is that taint is bad and I don't want it. Don't know if her nasty nails do the same dank shit zombie hands do. Probably. Fuck if I know.
>>
>>4732255
>accidentally
>>
>>4732407
It's a legitimate concern, but leaving her alive is more of a risk. Killing the whackjob attacking you with a knife is a more pressing concern than if you're going to get hep c or hiv afterwards - that's for worrying about when the direct threat is dealt with. That's just my perspective, I guess.

It's a threat to us but the chance of her escaping is a threat to MORE than just us.
>>
>>4732407
Get her dazed, then tie her up with the prodigious amount of rope on our person. After that we can start wailing on her.
>>
>>4732407
The real question is, will we get tainted if we touch her? If so, then Jiujutsu is out. I'm not going to risk it at that point.

>>4732407
If we run away, she'll just go after us, casting blood magic and poking us with her tanto all the time. Active defence is best.

I don't think just touching her will do much. Theoretically it could but like, it's not a sure thing, iirc. we got out of the zombie situation just fine.
>>
>>4732408
>ah fuck game got called before I woke up again

I'm against wasting our only source of jade in trying to kill someone with punches and kicks, especially someone armed with a knife (even if they suck with it). We don't get infinite shots, even a fully jaded up weapon only gets a few hits before it needs to be reapplied. Grappling her and tying her up seems reasonable, if risky (she does still have a knife after all). Swording her at 1 wound per attack will get us killed long before she gets bored, let alone injured, and decides to make us walk off the roof or whatever more directly killy maho she has available.

Also, just for the record, setting the castle on fire is dumb unless we trap her there first (in which case we don't need to burn the whole castle anyway). Running away is also probably not an option, unless we know exactly where we're going (the jade stores), which is unlikely since Daisuke hasn't been in this castle before and she's likely had years to ensure all the jade stocked is actually greenstone or whatever.
>>
>>4732419
We got lucky in the zombie situation. A flat DC of 15, with a raw 3k3? It's a coinflip, and we're lucky it landed on heads that time.
>>
>>4732428
It's 3d10 (that explode). Rolling 15 is slightly worse than average. Also, failing that roll wouldn't have tainted us immediately, we would've just taken a few taint points. After that we'd need a roll every month for the rest of Daisuke's life to resist the taint encroaching further, but he wouldn't be considered tainted until he hit ten points (at which point he likely has a distinguished career waiting for him with The Damned).
>>
>>4732419
Physical proximity/contact with a heavily Tainted creature is TN 10. The question is, does Miho count as heavily tainted. On one hand, casting maho gives you taint. On the other hand, Miho doesn't have visible mutations.

>>4732433
Btw, touching jade to a potentially tainted wound within a minute gives +10 to the resist roll.
>>
>>4732438
I doubt it can be that bad if she's gone undetected this long? I dunno.
>>
>>4732433
I think raw means unskilled, which means no exploding dice. Plus, I don't want to tempt fate where taint is concerned. I want to have untainted children thank you very much.

>>4732438
>touching jade to a potentially tainted wound within a minute gives +10 to the resist roll

No shit? You ain't pulling my leg here? Because that's a load off my mind then!
>>
>>4732444
4ed core rules p277.
Also, actually just having jade on one's person gives the bonus as well.
>>
>>4732444
>I think raw means unskilled, which means no exploding dice.
You don't get exploding dice when you make a skill roll without the skill. A "raw Earth roll" is, on the other hand, an attribute roll, and always explodes.
>>
>>4732449
>>4732451
Well, that definitely changes the situation, doesn't it?
>>
>>4732449

What got me is that jade powder is in an entirely different part of the book (page 320), so until very recently I was wondering "how the fuck does a Crab bushi take down an oni, why isn't their entire strategy something like the Phoenix where they rely on shugenja and their bushi are all specialized bodyguards", until I coincidentally found that part while looking for something else.
>>
How hard would it be to crush the jade finger into a powder we can apply onto our sword?
>>
>>4732882

Pretty difficult to do with her walking towards you with a knife covered in her tainted blood.
>>
>>4732892
>covered in her tainted blood

Wait, that changes things.
>>
We (or more likely, one of the team) could try stealing Shirou from Miho while she's distracted, then have her chase us to either the moat (so we can drown her) or to the caves (so we can try to entomb her inside). I'm thinking the moat's the best choice, since there isn't another exit she can leave from, but that means we're at risk of her getting tainted from her blood. On the other hand, sealing off only one exit gives us time to get to the villagers to flee while she's trying to find the exit in the pitch dark, and allows us time to find some backup.
>>
>>4732981
Any plan has to involve nullifying her blood magic as a priority. Otherwise, we're not going survive beyond the first few steps down the stairs.
>>
>>4732994
...Would Yoshi know where the old jade storage areas would be? It's unlikely that the tainted staff would have kept it around, but maybe there's an old stash he knows about.
>>
I think the best plan is to focus on avoiding the knife, then stalling her with bullshit (like throwing her down the stairs or out of the window and then throwing a table/heavy furniture on top of her, or just trapping her inside a wardrobe when she charges), then we ready the jade arrow and shoot her in the face. Our monk friend has more jade, so we can make more arrows while she is getting up/recovering/trapped under a wardrove or table
>>
Is there a big enough wardrobe in the room Wong? Because if there is one, we could trap her inside, then flip it so the door is pointing towards the ground, then we put some more furniture on top of her, dump a cauldron of oil an lit fire to the wood pile (or wait for a witch hunter to arrive or the invilnerable effect dissapears). If the floor is made of stone, then she can't get out
>>
How long does her spell normally last?
>>
>stealing the baby

>using the baby as a hostage

Anons, we may be a Crab and thus less concerned with rah rah honor bushido than your average Shiba, but holy shit, even O-Tora had more honor than that. You're proposing using an innocent (as far as we know) baby as a fucking shield.

Just kill her by punching/jiujitsuing her with the jade, christ. All these other stupid plans are so slapdash and goldbergian that they are destined to fail.

Getting some tainted blood on us isn't a game over, and trying to knock over 40 pieces of furniture like dominos to trap her or find somehow make a fucking bonfire to burn her in while she is RIGHT IN THE FUCKING ROOM AND ACTIVELY ABLE TO ATTACK US is ridiculous.

There's no sign she's even that attached to the kid, even if having a baby shield wasn't dishonorable - as long as she survives and isn't caught, it's not like she can't just have another kid to turn into a taint champion.

Seriously, I feel like most of you are trying to be way too 'clever' about this. Just fucking kill her with the jade we have on us - it'll help us kill her AND as >>4732449 >>4732438 >>4732451 point out, even if we get gallons of her blood on us as we beat her face in, it's not even guaranteed to DO anything.
>>
Like seriously, some of the plans involve grabbing her and forcing her into a wardrobe and then spending another 2 hours getting ready to kill her - how about we just grab her and kill her? That's like 10 less steps of things that can go wrong.
>>
>>4733307
We can't punch her to death, with our without jade, unless we get some really fucking lucky damage rolls. What we CAN do, however, is disarm her, truss her up like a turkey, and sit on her until the nearest Kuni Witchfinder can come by and drop a ton of jade on her.
>>
>>4733324
That's fair - getting the knife out of her hands and pinning her down works, i'm just baffled by some of the more out-there ideas.
>>
>>4733335
Well pinning her down doesn't really stop her from spitting out her spells. And closing her airway doesn't stop her from trying to gouge our eyes out. Not at first, at least.

The "sensible" plan is to just play keep away until Yoshi or Sayaka can get up here to help us and then bumrush the psycho.

"Just grab her" is a plan. Not the best plan but it's not like we have a ton of options.
>>
Could anyone clarify as to how her invulnerability works? Like unless she's stronger than us, couldn't we just disarm her and choke her out?
>>
>>4733324
>>4733335
>>4733362
So Lv 3 Jujutsu? Then we put a blade down her throat just to stop her speaking?
>>
What about rocking her brain around in her skull? Or is her brain....tougher
>>
I'm down with martial artsing her to death
But I can only strong suggest we disarm her of her blade before we start actually throwing punches with jade in our fist.
Speaking of, does anyone know what the penalty for a disarming strike/called shot on her weapon would be?
>>
>>4733392
I'm against spending XP because I want to save for an attribute raise, but the rest of the plan is solid.
>>
>>4733445
I'm not going to fight a Bloodspeaker unarmed and unskilled anon. Sense 4 never.
>>
>>4733406

I mean, we could use our katana first to disarm her, then punch the shit out of her. Put her into a false sense of security, and all that jazz.
>>
>>4733530
...Huh. I thought we already had Jujutsu 2 and were just going to level it to 3, but I see I was wrong. Still, leveling it from 0 to 2 should suffice for the time being.
>>
>>4733538
Rank 3 is actually rather important for us.

Jiujutsu (Agility)

Sub-types: None
Emphases: Grappling, Improvised Weapons, Martial Arts
Description: The art of unarmed combat is something that all bushi appreciate, although not all pursue it in the dojo. Many rely upon the weapon-based techniques they learn from their sensei to defend them even without their weapons, and while this can be marginally effective, the actual study of unarmed combat is much more useful. Monks in particular devote a great amount of time to the art of hand-to-hand combat, believing they both one the body and unify it with the mind.
Jiujutsu can be used as a Weapon Skill, rolling Jiujutsu / Agility against an opponent's Armor TN to hit and rolling a number of dice equal to your Strength, keeping one for damage (so if you had Strength 3, you would roll 3k1 damage for an unarmed attack). Jiujutsu is also used for initiating and maintaining Grapples. The Improvised Weapons Emphasis allows you to use almost anything you can get your hands on to increase your capacity to inflict damage. The GM is the final arbiter of what damage a particular improvised weapon inflicts, but generally it should grant additional rolled or kept dice, but not both.
Mastery Abilities:

Rank 3: The damage of all unarmed attacks is increased by +1k0.
Rank 5: Use of Jiujutsu confers a Free Raise toward initiating a Grapple.
Rank 7: The damage of all unarmed attacks is increased by +0k1 (+1k1 total).

We have Str 2 so we'll be rolling 2k1. With rank 3 that blows up to 3k1. With so few kept rolls, that additional potential for exploding dice is important.
>>
>>4733541
But only if we intend to actually punch her to death, which I maintain is a stupid idea. Simply disarming and restraining her should be, if not easy, at least a simple affair.
>>
Ya, disarm then move in to restrain seems smartest. If we can then hold out until backup arrives up the stairs, it works even better, because they can beat her to death while we hold her then. Or secure her better.
>>
>>4733547

My concern is this bit:
>“Oh, be silent. You've always been a good boy about eating everything I made for you, no matter the taste. You've drank spoonfuls of my blood by now, unknowing.” She extends her hand, and you see his muscles go rigid as you break into a run, your sword aimed for her, “Kill Arinaga Daisuke and protect me.”

What im basically seeing from this is that the maho spells can be casted without a verbal component, unlike standard shugenja prayers and barring a clarification from Wong, I am concerned that even tieing and gagging her wont be enough to stop her from casting her spells.
>>
>>4733568
I assume the special condition for that is the ingestion of the Bloodspeaker's blood. I think it's safe to say that for spell with more utility, she'll need to pray outloud, like she did with the invulnerability spell.
>>
>>4733307
I think you are got little bit triggered man, why don't you suggest a plan that avoids the tainted mindcontrol knife? You know, the fast, one shot-one kill weapon wielded by the invulnerable witch that wants to kill us...
>>
Noping away is a good plan if it avoids the knife, we could just parry her while we gtfo and then, after we tell our friends about the spell, they delay her and we prepare and shoot jade arrows
>>
>>4733591
>You know, the fast, one shot-one kill weapon wielded by the invulnerable witch that wants to kill us...

>fast
A weapon is only as fast as the hand that wields it
>one shot-one kill weapon
It is not that. It's probably got all sorts of bad shit on it, but it is not going to be immediately fatal.

>wielded by the invulnerable witch that wants to kill us...
Wielded by the invulnerable diminutive utterly untrained female that wants to kill us. Frankly, you should pray to all the kami that could possibly be listening that she *sticks* to trying the knife, since she stands next to no chance of actually hitting Daisuke with it.
>>
>>4733598
Yes, let's give her ALL the time and space so she can cast whatever Daisuke-killing, castle-tainting Maho spell her heart desires, despite the fact that the reason we rushed in here alone was to deny her time to do that exact thing.

>and we prepare and shoot jade arrows
That would be swell, IF WE ACTUALLY HAD ANY. We have a jade finger that we could MAYBE rig up and shoot with ONE arrow. Maybe.
>>
>>4733605
>>4733613
So, disarm then punch? I agree that if we don't take the initiative, we will lose.
>>
>>4733648
Disarm, then grapple to incapacitate, imo. Punching her to death is unlikely to work before our pitiful amount of jade runs out.

That said, the sun's up, I have to sleep, you guys try not to fuck it up too bad while I'm gone.
>>
I mean, she has skin that can't be punctured by a knife. It's as simple as grabbing her, disarming her, putting the jade to her neck and then snapping her neck like a chicken.

Hell, we can strangle her too if we need to. Unless she's previously cast magic that gives her huge physical boosts, this shouldn't be that hard.

I recommend seeing if we can get her monologue a bit so we can tie our headband/bandana around our mouth as a precaution from ingesting any of her blood. She's likely to try smearing her bloody hand across our face.
>>
Does invulnerability specifically protect her on the outside, or does it protect everything? Theoretically you could just knock her out by rocking her brain about with a punch to the jaw if it doesn't protect her on the inside
>>
>>4733678
>You understand what she did, you think (and maybe some of those dice got converted into a Lore: Shadowlands roll to understand what the Invulnerable property means). Any strike you make against her with a mundane weapon, even a fantastic one like your sword, will do virtually nothing (1 Wound per strike max). Only weapons made of jade, crystal, obsidian, nemuranai, or magic will harm her now.

I assume it protects the user from anything non-magical. We're lucky we have that stick of jade mate. I vote for Jiujutsu 3, as this is clearly the best way forward. Disarm, grapple, and gag. It our best chance to nip this shit in the bud.

She sets Shirou down on the cushions, at least, before stalking confidently towards you with her tanto slick with tainted gore and her body impervious to your blade. You swing, and see her smirk.

You easily strike before she does. Although the black crackling lightning appears when your sword strikes her across the knuckles, and you neither draw blood or break bones, you do send the bloody knife flying from her hands to embed itself point-first in the wall. She tsks, and stomps down hard on the fallen and dying Nishiyama's leg, causing him to groan as the blood spills forth. “I've decided. I'm going to have you kill your friends outside. It's the least you can do, after so rudely staining my hospitality.” She gestures at the pool of red, reaching into her kimono and pulling out a small, carefully wrapped square of cloth, “So kind of you to leave hair all over the pillows of your futon, enough for me to use.” She begins chanting the same dissonant glossalia as earlier, and you feel your skin crawl as though your entire body were a tuning fork struck by a hammer. Something is horribly, horribly evil, and it grows moreso with every syllable from her lips.

You stick your sword into the tatami mats and charge her, stepping around behind her and putting her into a headlock. She laughs. You can feel how much weaker her body is than yours, untrained and practically frail, she can no more fight you off than a mouse can fight off a serpent, but she seems unbothered by it, until she feels the hard press of what's caught between her throat and your forearm. The jade finger Yoshi gave you. Her smirk vanishes as she realizes, but she cannot stop her spellcasting. She dares not. Your body spasms, as for a split second, you feel something try to move your arms that isn't you. Using your free hand to keep the point of the jade finger wedged against your windpipe, you squeeze harder, digging it into her throat. Her voice wavers, then strengthens again, shaking her head violently as your fingers grip her lower jaw in an attempt to silence her, her chanting growing louder. You grit your teeth, and pry her mouth open, hooking your fingers over the teeth of her lower jaw, your legs scrabbling against hers as the two of you fall to the floor. She bucks and squirms like a hooked fish, but you easily keep your hold as you grab the jade finger and shove it into her mouth, pressing your fingertips against the butt of the thin cylinder and shoving it inwards and downwards.

Her eyes bulge, and she gags, the chanting coming to an abrupt end as her feet drum on the floor, her throat working frantically in an effort to gag out the jade finger, but you inexorably force it downward, cutting off her air. Her face turns red, then purple, her dark powers unable to expel the sacred substance.

“Dai...” She rasps breathlessly, and for a moment, you think she's about to say your name.

“I AM HERE.” Rasps a horrible voice from the window, and you lift your eyes to see something horrible.

His body is no longer shaped like a human's. It is primarily quadrupedal, the bones twisted at unnatural angles, and the muscles bulging so much that his armor is mostly gone, and his clothes dangling off him in rags. Not quite like that of a tiger, but more some grotesquely overmuscled rat with no tail. O-Tora's fingers and toes each end in curving, pitch-black claws like those of a falcon, and his mouth bristles with sharp, black fangs, too many of them, in rows like that of a shark. His eyes are pits of glowing blue.

“...go...tsu...” She whispers a word that sounds like “Prince”, but that word was the last of her air, and she collapses, black-faced and with her tongue protruding obscenely.

“FOR MY SON. I WILL NOT BE LIKE MY FATHER. I WILL NOT ABANDON YOU.” With surprising tenderness, O-Tora scoops up Shirou, swaddling and all, into the crook of one arm. You realize with a start that, this whole time, the child has been crying, the noise must have been very upsetting.

O-Tora's eyes meet yours, and his broken, inhumanly-shaped mouth twists in a smile. Clinging to the outer wall like a spider, he scurries down it and away into the night, Shirou held tight against his chest, before you can make sure that the witch is dead and get to your sword.

It doesn't matter. You know where he is going.

No.

Nonononono FUCK.
>>
>>4733951
Was Daigotsu even born yet? IIRC we're quite a bit before Hantei the 38th came along
>>
>>4733958

Yes. I think I said so at some point, but the kid that becomes the last Hantei normally died choking on piece of fruit pit. Then his father, Hantei the 38th, died of a fever in the midst of terrible grief and depression. Which is why, now, two Hantei claimants are fighting over the throne. The Clan Champions are probably all different, though, since I dislike a lot of those events.
>>
>>4733960
Ah well whichever poor Kuni comes to deal with this mess is going to have fun. Hopefully the castle isn't that tainted.
>>
>>4733951
Well damn.
>>
>>4733951
That's a fucking brutal way to kill a family member, but fucking witch deserved it.
Should probably lop of the cuckoo's head, before he joins tiny-kitty as a crab walker.
Thanks for running Wong.
>>
>>4733951
Huh.

So about the fire plan, I've updated it to include this entire fucking province.
>>
>>4733960
Great session Wong! Night mate.

>>4733962
It's our mess now mate. If there's any chance of saving the child, we have to take it. And if there's any chance at putting a stop to this Shadowlands fuckery in our family's lands, we must take it.
>>
That went well!
>>
>>4733951
Ok, apparently choking someone to death was a lot easier than I planned.
>>
>>4734214
Definitely easier than trying to testify against them to a magistrate.

It feels almost comical how fast we’ve been rolling from bandits to more bandits to O-tora to assaulting the castle. Daisuke speedrunning province cleanup, glitchless.
>>
...How soon can we recruit a Kuni Witch Hunter?
>>
>>4734328
Is Dead O-Tora a bonus boss? Do we have to fight him, or is this an any%?
>>
>>4734341
pretty sure ignoring him leads to a hard-mode legacy boss encounter against [Shirou, Tainted heir of the Maho-tsukai] and his father [Dead Tigerbeast O-Tora] in 15-20 years time. Not necessarily our problem but certainly a problem for whoever the the then lord is.
>>
>>4733951
Behead Miho and Takeshi unless he can be brought back from the brink. Also ah shit a big name is involved, if p up for him possessing o-toRa’s corpse.
>>4734328
Combat in l5r is really swingy and very lethal. Fights rarely last long in this system.

>>4734340
Not soon enough

>>4734341
This is Daigotsu possessing the corpse. Notice how Miho called to him and he said he was here. Doubled with that snippet of abandonment? It’s 100% the Father of the Spider clan picking up a child of legacy if not by blood. Doing nothing not an option. We have to try.
>>
>>4733967
Child is probably not able to be saved if Daigotsu himself is coming to try and yoink him.
>>
>>4734368
>>4734397

Or O-Tora thought she was saying "Daichi". He did address Shirou as "my son". Also keep in mind, Daigotsu is unknown in Rokugan at this point. If you ask anyone about heavyweight Lost, they'll talk about the Dark Moto or the Akutenshi.
>>
>>4734516
Sooo, for people like me that are sadly not versed in the lore, who is Daigotsu and what the fuck did just happen?
>>
>>4735282
Daigotsu is the last child of Hantei the 38th

Bunch of maho-tsukai cultists kidnapped the empress and she was giving birth bound the child in a ritual to a nameless oni.

Making him terrifyingly strong. He's canonically the last Hantei alive.

He's been killed and resurrected, is powerful enough to throw hands with Oni lords and WIN alone. He destroyed the imperial city, nearly destroyed the Torturi dynasty outright several times, Took Fu leng's place as Absolute ruler of jigoku..list goes on and on. He also foudned the great Spider Clan.
>>
>>4735420
So he's the Big Bad Guy himself. Well, fuck, let's hit him with a sword until we die.
>>
>>4735420
There's only one thing I care about... is he written well, or like some sort of weird Crane fanfic?
>>
>>4735420
Well fuck. We might be able to take out the demons host but damn. We gonna need a metric fuckton of Jade up in this bitch for that bitch.
>>
>>4735443
If we are going to get tortured in xiaxia hell forever, let's at least stab him in the face with our father's sword, and then his son.
>>
>>4735440
The only reason we're not already deadif that IS him? Is because he's still coming into his power and locked away in jigoku for his own safety at this point. he'd have one shotted the entire castle otherwise.

>>4735441
depends entirely on which writer has their hands on him at the moment.

>>4735443
we were already going to need it, she's had decades to taint everything here after all.
>>
>>4735441
From what little I gleaned from the l5r threads on /tg/, AEG kept wanking him and the Spider Clan hard far too much, and that was what caused the setting to be given to FFG and be retconned back to the first edition's timeline.
>>
Spoiler, I would not throw DAIGOTSU at you, especially at Rank 2, especially not as some boss fight.
>>
>>4735566
>not going to to fight insurmountable odds against a shadowlands baddie like a proper Hiruma should

|^:<
>>
>>4735566
Pussy, I bet we could take him if the dice landed well.
>>
>>4735784
Just because Daisuke has managed to win every duel he has been in without so much as a scratch on him doesn't mean he could beat the biggest dickest taint lad in existence.

Give him one hell of a bloody nose though HELL YEAH
>>
Well now. It would be dramatically appropriate for Sayaka's retainers to show up in the morning and try to hurriedly drag her away from all this shit...
>>
>>4735784
If he rolls all nat 1 and we roll all nat 100 and we end up rolling more dice than him, we may or may not be able to harm him for real (not just his puppet). Killing him is way above our paygrade, or practically anyone's, for that matter. I've been reading about this guy and he is destined to become the next Evil Kami of evilness, he is both a powerful sorcerer and a bullshit swordman, and clever to boot. He is ruthless and overall a bad guy and death means shit to him
>>
Chiming in from the garden store to say this is my fault. I hate having to tell rather than show, but apparently this is my error. O-Tora is not being puppeted by Daigotsu, in any way. The joke was that Miho said the first syllable of his name first, O-Tora (real name Daichi) went "I'm here", and when she said the next syllable he went "for my son". One anon's wrong interpretation infected the rest of you.

Also a little miffed at people metagaming on his identity but it can't be helped since everyone who plays L5R is gonna know who he is. This is my take on Daigotsu and I haven't read his metaplot on purpose. Also why I've avoided using most canon NPCs from this time period.
>>
>>4736420
But Wong we can ignore the joke to shadowrun and shitpost.

I still have no idea who he actually is. Just that he's kind of a big deal.
>>
>>4736420
Don't worry Wong, I know almost nothing about L5R outside of bare basics and having played it for like 2 combined sessions ever. I just compare every badguy to Kamen Rider enemies, instead!

What would Daisuke's karaoke be?

Something surprisingly country-like and lighthearted. He's a bumpkin at heart, after all.

I would love for Sayaka to pressure him into a duet of butterfly though. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=klfOoPEISyQ

What's the Japanese equivalent of American Pie?
>>
>>4745706
I'm guessing "Japanese Pie".

"Oh my, my whats this Japanese Pie?/ How did the even make it when they do not grow rye?/ Guess that I will grab a sword and be a great samurai/ Maybe this will be the day that I die./ This will be the day that I die"
