Royal Rumble is a small draw quest about the management of a fantasy kingdom. It priorities the personal drama and engagements of prominent characters in the world. In this quest, if you should ever die or become incapacitated, the quest will continue as the character who is next in line to your throne. Time moves in blocks of days, weeks, months, or even years. You can find yourself playing as the grown up spoiled child of the previous MC, running your fathers kingdom into the ground. The quest is to be updated daily, this can be more or less frequent depending on the player activity.

Eighty years ago, the kingdom of Ynedrred was at the height of its power. A land rich with good fields to seed and harvest, and precious metals that protruded out of the ground in vast veins. The people of the land grew wealthy as the kingdoms political reach extended well beyond its borders. At the heart of this kingdom, was the Blue Mountain. Settled underneath the mountains shadow, was the capital city of Revin who drank deep the wealth that flowed from her. Gems of all colours flowed from the mountain like endless glistering rivers. So high the kings sat, that they could never see the fall before them.

Eighty years to the day, came wrath, came ruin, came fire, and it bore itself upon great black wings. The devastation of Sserilyin the black was vast and terrible. Whole armies disappeared beneath his incinerating flame, the earth shook and split beneath his thundering steps, and the land knew only night beneath his mighty wingspan. When he was done, the line of kings was broken and the land splintered. The wealth of the blue mountain and the kingdom of Ynedrred stopped flowing, seemingly never to return. Only then, did the great dragon rest in the creator that once was a majestic city. He has not been seen since, not that there are many brave enough to explore the old ruins.

Presently the lands are controlled by reviling barons and enterprising piety nobles. All holding the dream of a united Ynedrred in their hearts, if only under their rule. The seat of power changes hands quickly in these lands, and one such shift happens now...

From the old empire of Ilion the elves flow out into the world. Extremely long lived and physically robust, an elf has personally experienced things that most men believe to be myth. No matter where they are found or who they serve, their true objectives are always shrouded in mystery. The true reason for an elves involvement can sometimes only be seen hundreds of years later. Yet even so, they are highly sought after as advisers by royal courts for their experience and as seemingly bottomless pits of knowledge. Although once imbedded in a royal court, they can be almost impossible to remove.

(+) excellent adviser, there is nothing an elf cannot advise you about

With the death of your father, who cared little for the mundane management of his holdings, she has taken this opportunity to bridge the gap between the merchant class and the house of the baron. Voting on how you want to start will now commence, I plan to leave it open for a while.

The best way to vote is to list the heir apparents from best to worst, then the advisors from best to worst. You will play as the apparent with the most votes, the sibling will be the apparent with the second most votes, and the advisors will be in the same order. If you don't liek a character at all, you dont have to list them.

Characters that don't get picked will be returned to the character deck and perhaps drawn in the future as enemies or allies.

Your holdings are calculated as "expected" year end gains and loses on a monthly / weekly basis. Power gaming shenanigans like hiring solders at the start of the year and disbanding them in December will still need to be payed 11/12 months they were in service. Food cannot be hoarded as it is already assumed that some is saved and preserved. Food carried over to the new year will be spent as a "growth" bonus throughout your kingdom based on a land holding / food units ratio that decreases exponentially based on the size of the ratio disparity.

Side note: The reason your town is making the same amount of food that it is eating, is due to its location next to a river and fishing. As the town grows in size it will need to import food from the farms to maintain itself.

The priest places the ceremonial wreath around your head and at once you feel its weight. As if by magic, you suddenly truly understand the seriousness of your position. Scores of men live and die by the choices you make, and In your hands now is the power to shape the history of an entire kingdom. Your childhood friend Gustoff is the first to cheer, then the entire court is clapping and cheering. With your concentration broken, all you can do is smile and wave at your subjects.

When things die down you find yourself speaking with Gustoff, he has done nothing but sing your praises with a smile during the weeks leading up to your coronation. Now he looks exhausted.
“I know you will be a great Baron my lord, know that I will serve you faithfully as long as I am able”
You put your hand on his shoulder
“Somethings are never in question my friend”

You take this moment to wave over a young woman who has been patently sitting and waiting for you to do so. She quickly makes her way over to you, and gives you a low bow that almost sends her hat to the ground. She is quick to catch it however, and returns to her upright position. You introduce Gustoff to Sasha, your new financial adviser. He gives her an odd look, but doesn’t voice his opinion. Too nervous for a prolonged silence, Sasha is quick to speak up.
“I thank you again for this opportunity my lord, I won't let you down.”

You give her a small smile, “Ill hold you to that adviser”

A note about advisors: An advisor can only give you advice if they are in the same place as you, if one was to be on a mission to another barony, obviously they cannot. Generally all advisor actions are summed up in two ways: Mission, the advisor is out doing something for you. Management, The advisor is managing something for you. If the Advisor is not doing either, the advisor will attempt to find ways to better your kingdom in their own way. Doing things like hunting witch or bringing you trade opportunities, etc.

You are playing as who ever is the Baron/ king / emperor of your holdings. Currently that is Garland. If you should die, you will be playing as Oliver. Unless you disown him and appoint someone else as your successor.

The kingdom mentioned is the fractured kingdom of Ynedrred, which your Barony is a part of. Currently there is no king, as the Dragon shattered the line completely. Each Barony runs itself, but in times of war or need, the Barons will unite under a single banner of Ynedrred.

You decide that the best place for your brother is by your side. At first you attempt to resume his sword training, but his lethargy make it hard to really teach him anything, you get the impression that he could cry at any moment and you are not really sure how to deal with something like that. So instead you instruct him to simply stay close to you and observe. There is more ways then one to start the boys training. He seems to take well to that. Even though he mostly doesn't talk much and keeps to himself, he seems to enjoy spending time with his older brother. So far, he hasn't caused you any trouble.

As for celebrations, you had decided to go with a feast. You have food distributed in the town centers for a week of entertainment and games. This goes over very well with the population of Upper Reichland, who hope to see more displays like this from their new baron. Your father was a respected man, but he never interacted very much with his citizens. Although this helps consolidate your power internally, it doesn't do much for you externally. You receive letters from the other Barons wishing you well, but you wouldn't be surprised if most of these were stamped by the barons and not actually hand written by them.

I decided to slowly add more parts to the map as they become relevant as to not overload you with information. Also, not to burn myself out drawing the whole damn thing at once.

Baron is the official title as set by the "Baron's treaty" 10 years after the cataclysm. Its mostly done the same way from province to province. But you (Garlend) know that government is done differently in the Fyjord. You don't know the specifics, yet even they have a "Baron"

You decide to leave Dunkkridge alone for now, and focus your attention on the Silver trade flowing up and down your river. One problem at a time, its only been about two weeks since you became a Baron after all. Instead of charging a tax out of the blue, you send Sasha to survey the situation up north.

Its not even day after, your brother goes missing! You and Gustoff look everywhere for him and sound the alarm. You search every house and turn over every chicken, yet he is no where to be found. At first light, Gustoff rides out in search of him while you stay and marshal the forces in case your brother was kidnapped by a rivalling Baron. Its at this time that you find a letter from your brother on top of your desk, it doesn’t look very official and it was easy to miss. It reads: “Dear brother, I have always wanted to see the Kingsland, the ancestral home of our forefathers. I didn't think you will let me go, so I plan to sneak aboard Lady Sasha's ship. Please don't worry about me.” You are overwhelmed with relief, but at the same time are quite vexed with your brother. He has caused a great deal of commotion and uproar with his actions, but at the same time, this is probably the most adventurous thing he has ever done.

You talked with Sasha before she left about doing some land surveys, in an attempt to maybe find some valuable resources. She thinks its a good idea if you have to gold to invest. Since you have planned to send her up to Kingsland, she can't look into it personally. So she has put you in touch with some geologists looking for patronage.

The groups leader tells you that since There since there are resources to the north and south, It is quite possible that there are some precious metals here as well. He tells you their fee would be 4 [Gold Coins] to be payed for 8 [months] of work, with a [10%] chance of success. They are also willing to work for [2] Gold coins but want [20%] lay on everything mined from whatever they discover to be payed in perpetuity to them and their descendants.

>What's preventing us from biting off bits and pieces of our neighbors' lands?
The drawn boarders are just whats been agreed upon at the current date, perhaps through land gifts, conquest, marriage, etc. If you decide something should be yours, you are free to say it is so. If someone else also believes it to be theirs, they will probably disagree. They may possibly come to defend it if you try and take it, or they may let it happen if they can't stop you. If you decide to start attacking your neighbors, you may find other barons teaming up on you in defense of the status quo, or they may join you, if they hate the baron you are attacking.

The "Barons Treaty" is just some things that the guys who managed to cut themselves the biggest slice of the pie, after the line of kings was broken, agreed on. Basically, The kingdom of Midlan came to conquer what was left of Ynedrred ten years after the Dragon showed up, and they all had to band together.

My first instinct would have been to send the elite guard with him, but that might alarm the Kingslanders. Hopefully they're virtuous enough to not take advantage of him (whether that be through impressing him with gifts and promises of favours if he talks up the baron(y) of Kingsland, introducing him to one of the Baron's younger family members, or, God forbid, by kidnapping him). Otherwise, let's hope they think he's just Sasha's assistant.

>What can we build? And what can we upgrade or improve out of what we already have?

The best way for me to explain it, is to image yourself the president of America. Are you going to walk down to a random city, find a cereal mill and start micromanaging whats going on there? No, of course not, your advisors don't even do that, the advisors advisor may do that. The towns and farms manage themselves and grow naturally. If you want to improve them, you can invest money and your financial advisor will distribute it appropriately after speaking with the right nobles and well to do merchants. Then after such and such years you will see the town grow and make more money through tax later. Or maybe you want to become a patron to some local artists, this could cause more artists to come to your land and seek employment at the studios. Then, as your town becomes the meca of glass sculptures, you will see an increase in profit and prestige as they start to sell their works around the world.

You can decide that you want to increase the scale of lumber cut by your barony, and over a few years construct a large operation. But these are the kinds of things your advisor will bring to you and advise you on. Maybe she will take a year to go down to midlan and scout how they do their large scale lumber. Think less about building a port on the river and think more about the military repercussions of taxing Kingsland.

You need to look at yourself as a big picture kind of guy, you are the big cheese in U.Reichland. A better use of your time would be to invite other barons for a dinner and meet their family and discus how they feel about other barons and make secret alliances with them. Or, since you are a knight, travel to a tourney and meet other baron knights. Maybe marry someones ugly daughter and inherit all their land.

You are the baron of U.Reichland, and maybe one day the king of Yneddred. Don't sweat the small stuff, its better left to the small people. If you want to build something, build it big. Perhaps a massive wall to keep the people of Fyjord out forever.

TURN 4

The main idea's set down by the “baron's treaty” and how they have evolved or devolved over the seventy years. For the anon that wanted more information on it.

>- A united but fractured Yneddred
(Even while divided into baronies, the people share a common linage of Yneddred and mostly believe themselves to be part of the same demographic and culture differentiating themselves from other kingdoms)

>- Illegalization of slavery and serfdom, the practice will never return to the lands of Yneddred
( Knights of the silver circle are expected to maintain this and have had good success)

>- Continuity of the Kings Law
( This covers many many basic laws such as the abolishing of guilds, a national conman language, laws against murder, etc etc etc. Most of these laws are carry overs from the Kingdom of Yneddred)

>- Legitimacy of barons
(Not all who ended up cutting out a piece of Yneddred after the cataclysm were of noble birth, many wealthy merchants, private armies, thugs, and elders were also able to do so. The treaty legitimizes their right to rule over the lands they claimed. Many barons of noble blood still believe themselves to be above ones who are descended from the “common folk”)

>- The agreements on boarders
(No one seriously looks to the barons treaty anymore to settle boarder arrangements. Barons will still use it for an excuse to wage war “”””legally”””” though)

>- Unification in defense
(The barons will come together to defend each other from foreign interests. In times of war, a Baron will be voted to be commander of the armed forces. They managed this seventy years ago, but who knows if they will again)

>- Meeting of the Barons
(The barons will come together every five years to talk and possibly make amend to the treaty, hosted by the knights of the silver circle order master)

>- No access to the blue mountain or surrounding territory.
(Don't wake it up)

Gustoff, how much would it cost and how long would it take to build a castle? A proper place to train Knights of the Silver Circle would bolster our recruitment efforts, wouldn't you agree?

As you know, knights of the silver circle are drawn from the noble families of Ynnedred. Nobles are able to afford themselves the best gear, and even warhorses. Usually, they have the money to hire personal trainers and are trained from a very early age. The infrastructure needed to train common men into a fighting unit comparable to knights, only exists in the myths of old. Yet, when I close my eyes I too dream of such a facility. If you wish to gain more [Elite Troop]s, you may do so by gaining prestige. The prestige of the barony will draw more nobles to you and give you the ability to recruit more of these units.

I do share your desire to grow our military strength. If we are going to start taxing Kingland and Dunkridge, I would prefer that we had the forces to back up our claims. If the other barons see our might they will pay out, and in that way, our new solders will pay for themselves. Now thats real world economics that you won't get from Sasha. Right now, we can support [2] more unit of [Regular Infantry]. I would prefer we started training them as soon as possible, so they are ready when we need them instead of reactionary conscription that will bred less trained under equipped troops. If you want, I can spend the rest of the year building a [training camp] and gathering instructors. That will let us each train [2] regular infantry and double our output. A [Training camp] will cost [5 Coins] and would have an upkeep of [1 coin] a year.

As for a castle, we already have Haldrin keep built in the old Ynnedred style (A Norman keep). Its well maintained and has weathered the forces of Midlan in your grandfathers time. We can expand this to a larger castle if you wish, giving us more prestige and a stronger base of operations. I don't know much about the costs of building a structure of this scope, but I can look into it for you. Personally, I would prefer that we increase our standing forces, giving us greater reach.

[How are our historical relations with our immediate neighbors? I want to look into the feasibility of gaining land, loot, glory further abroad without having our back stabbed while our army is away. ]

Since you have some time to yourself, you decide to read up on your fathers notes on the surrounding baronies. Since he died so suddenly, he never got around to passing on all the knowledge that you would need. Yet, from what you find in his old study, he definitely was planning on doing so. Your father was a military man, but a peaceful man, you are happy that he didn’t leave you any real enemies.

Kingsland: "Once the most prized lands in the kingdom, now a shadow of its former self. The barons of this land come from the line of stewards. They believe themselves to be the rightful rulers of Yneddred because of this. Yet they have never had the strength to enforce it. The current Baron is a fine chap, works hard to do what he can with the scared lands he rules over. He is a lover of fine entertainment, I have met him at many tournaments. Never as a competitor. "

"Usually he is busy spending his resources dealing with the creatures of the feywood and their allies in Irlean."

Dunkkridge: "A ruthless and mysterious barony. They may be small, but the great city of Rindrolt is well positioned to take in much trade going to and from the east and west baronies. Their armed forces are sizable, and they are not afraid to use them in order to force favourable deals. The baron secludes himself to the RindKeep, and is rarely seen. "

Fyjord: "The people of the Fyjord only entered the Kingdom of Yneddred 150 years ago, and still retain much of their former culture. In many ways the Fyjord is a small fractured kingdom onto itself, with each village being self sustaining and having its own appointed leader. The people of the Fyjord spend most of the year fighting among themselves, but will launch raids on the nearby baronies in winter. Its very difficult to seek reparations because its unknown what village actually was responsible. It is a dangerous thing dealing with these people, as one never knows what insult could unite the clans against him. "

"They are led by their elected spiritual leader, who spends most of his time resolving infighting between his Thanes. He doesn't see himself as a baron, but the title will still be used by outsiders. "
>>
Lower Reichland: "The Barony of my good friend Oswald, a fellow knight of the silver circle. He has always been a good and fair in all his dealings. He may not look it now, but there was a time when men would fear the swing of his mighty hammer. When not dealing with the affairs of state, he spends the remainder of his days holding small tournaments and travelling on pilgrimages to collect books. "

Irlean: "Separating our boarders is the feywood, home to many bizarre creatures such as wisps, ents, and dryads. While most men abhor the ungodly creatures and their tricks, the Irlean's are the only ones who seem to be able to deal with them peacefully. I'm happy to say that I have not had many dealings with these people or their fairy friends. My only advice is to never ever deal with these creatures or cross the Sesip."

Sasha is soon to follow. When she enters the room, she gives you a low bow almost sending her hat off her head. You have learned to notice this as a sign of nervousness from the adviser.

“Greetings my lord, let me Start by apologizing for inadvertently kidnapping your brother. He told me that you gave him permission to accompany me, and I didn’t think I had the authority to stop him...”

“With that hopefully out of the way, I have been able to learn quite a lot about the silver trade coming from the Kingsland. As I suspected, it seems that one hundred percent of the silver trade is being sent to Midlan. There, the silver is being turned into silver weapons. Apparently, silver weapons have a strong effect on magical creatures. The reason so many weapons are being forged now, is due to the “war of the five wizards” that is currently pulling in much of the southern kingdoms. I'm not sure which side the weapons are being sold too, or how extensive the operation is. But I do know that Kingsland is making a killing. Right now they are making [5][Gold Coins] a year. But the full operation has not even reached its halfway point. Currently a large port is being constructed in Hornsey that will increase the trade yield. Lastly, it seems that they are not able to mine silver effectively from all their mines. One of their mining operations is close enough to the Fey wood, that it is being assailed by the Fey beings! The Baron is doing all he can to get it under control. I believe that a year from now, Kingsland will be making [13] Gold coins a year!”

“There is one more thing my lord. About a month after I arrived at Hornsey, your brother and I were discovered by the Barons adviser Geoffrey. Unfortunately, he recognized your brother. I was worried at first, but Geoffrey took care of us and treated your brother like a royal guest. This made my investigation harder, and i'm worried that it may have ultimately compromised some of the information I was able to ascertain. Geoffrey was also able to surmise the purpose of our visit, and wishes an audience with you in regard to the tax. I apologize again my lord”

You are introduced to Geoffrey, the adviser to the baron of Kingsland. He is a well trained diplomat, which means he spends too much time being polite and not enough time explaining his purpose. Over time, he explains to you that his Baron disagrees with putting a tax on a river that is used by everyone. He wouldn’t charge you a road tax when your assistant and brother want to pay him a visit. Yet, he is willing for the sake of a good relationship agree to a tariff of 10%. The Adviser also tells you that his Baron would be willing to sweeten the deal to pay a 30% tariff, if you would but lend him some of your troops in order to help clear out the area around the fey wood causing him trouble. More money for him, means more money for you...

Geoffrey is not prepared to negotiate anything else with you regarding the silver trade. If you don't agree with 10% or 30%, the you and the Baron would need to meet personally.

Gustoff: You should be careful Garlend, its easy to be blinded by gold. If Kingsland gets it operation off the ground, they will be making money hand over fist. It may not happen two, or even five years from now, but eventually that money is going to be put to use. I can see a future where Kingsland is no longer interested in paying a tariff and legions of mercenaries are pounding at our door.

[Sasha]I think this is a great opportunity to make money for the Barony. The war that is funding all of this wont last forever. By the time the Baron has the might to force us into submission, the gold will dry up anyway.

We can't stop Kingsland from mining silver, so let's at least get in on it so that we can get some mercs of our own.
I don't like the idea of messing with anything called "fey". What if they are vengeful and have long memories?

I want to try and establish close trade relations with the closest villages so they don't raid us. Maybe in time we can culturally dominate and assimilate them.

You have agreed upon 30%, with the promise of sending troops to help clear out the Baron's mines of the Fey creatures. Now, the only thing to decide is what troops to send. The Baron will probably expect you to send [2] units or [Regular infantry] or [1] Unit of [Elite infantry] at the minimum. Also, you would prefer to send someone you trust with the troops. The only problem is the bad timing. Any infantry you send won't be back until late November, and you have a tournament to attend. You, being the Baron, would be expected to bring at least [1] [troop] with you for protection on the road. On top of which, you are going to need to leave someone in charge of your lands in your absence with some troops to defend the city and farmlands should the need arise. You never know when bandits may show up, especially if they get word of the absence of the majority of the army. You have considered travelling mostly alone, except for a few knights and servants, you are a very skill swordsmen after all.
There seems to be just not enough of everything.

Should you leave Gustoff in charge of the city? Or should you send him with the troops?
Should you take your brother with you? Or maybe its best to leave Oliver in charge of the city with Gustoff there to aid him? If Gustoff leaves the city and you leave the city then no one will be training the new recruits. It may be too much to trust Sasha alone with your barony. Showing this much trust to a new adviser may make you look a trusting fool publicly, or may even make her a target.

>What will you do with your Troops:
> Send _________ to aid Kingsland
> Leave ________ to defend your lands
> Bring ________ with you as escorts

What will you do with your advisers and Brother?
> Oliver will _________
> Sasha will __________
> Gustoff will ________

>Forget it, ill have to pull out of the tournament.

You have a hard time deciding if you should scold your brother. You half heatedly decide on a medium punishment. Yet through your reluctance to crush his adventuring spirit, end up somewhere in between doing nothing and punishing him. You try and explain why what he did was wrong, and as you do so, you start to remind yourself of your father. You remember your fathers scolding was as equally mild and you never really learned your lessons as a child, forcing you to repeat them. All that Barony stuff never really hit you then, and it wasn’t until they put that wreath over your head did you ever truly understand what your father was trying to tell you. You are wondering if maybe Oliver won't either.

On the bright side, he takes well to being made run around the keep and swing his sword. He tries harder with his sword practice too. When you eventually confront him on what brought along the change, he confess to you about that happened in Kingland bothered him.

“When Geoffrey discovered us I was scared that something bad was going to happen. I wanted to protect Sasha and everyone else travelling with us but couldn’t do anything. I felt so weak and powerless... I want to be more like you, someone my friends can rely on for protection.”

You just hope the change sticks. There is much work to be done in order to catch him up to other boys his age.

The baron of the lands is expecting at least 1 [Elite infantry]or two [Regular infantry]. We would like someone to personally lead the units while they abroad.
Oliver, being a young man, has decided he wants an adventure, while showing a positive attitude towards the sword training and running around the keep. This will give him a chance to learn what it means to be a leader of men.
Because these are Fey folk, Oliver may treat them more like animals and less like people, he will hesitate less in ordering their deaths, giving him an opportunity to wet his blade, learn the weight of life, and how to command properly.
The [Elite infantry] are better able to take any poor decisions that may come from Oliver's ineptness due to his youth and inexperience. If anything, they will teach, protect, and lead him more than the other way around.
Because the Baron has requested aid, he will be happy to see our [Elite infantry], however, upon seeing young Oliver, he should be less likely to ask him to be the Vanguard for three reasons:
1. It will show weakness to other Barons if they learned that Kingsland asked for a child to fight against invaders when they themselves could not even defend against
2. Being the heir to the throne of our Barony, should young Oliver die while in their care, it would give us Casus Belli to invade their lands
3. The Baron is already in a weak position, being young in age, he may not have the guile to see through our plans, and may take pity on Oliver "for his cruel older brother sending out someone so young to kill"
Oliver has already been to the lands and will know his way around a little more than Gustoff.

Sasha should accompany us to the tournament because as financial advisor to the lands, she will be in the best position to wheel and deal, having her ear to the ground, and learn the ins and outs of other Barony.
Being a young woman, Sasha would be able to glean information more readily from unconventional sources, workers, servants, as well as the usual suspects, knights, men.
Gustoff would best be left in the kingdom since he knows it second-to-us, the ways of the land as well as the Modus operandi of the bandits and skulduggeries in the shadows.
Gustoff knowing his men better than anyone would quickly be able to mount a defense in case of any emergency and since we didn't piss off Dunkkridge, this is less likely to happen.
Finally, leaving Gustoff to watch over allows the training of the new regiments to continue.
>>
>>4649254
If the baron was to complain or alter the deal in any way, he would be the one looking foolish as he set the terms, we are just fulfilling our end. This would also be shown as an insult, as though Oliver and by extension, our family/barony, is incapable and give us further cause to eliminate them.

Even if the baron was a total bastard, putting Oliver through the ringer, this would be a boon for us should Oliver fail or succeed, as we would have 30% tariff either way.

If Oliver succeeds, he grows up a little, has an adventure, gains confidence, learns what it means to be an adult, leans what true fighting and leading is, and we kept our end of the bargain.

If Oliver fails, we can blame the other baron for lying to us about the graveness of the assault and unite against a common enemy.

No matter what happens, we win.

You decide to send your elite troops to fulfil your obligation to Kingland. You are sure your knights and lieutenants will be able to handle themselves and act properly in all situations. So, instead of haveing Gustoff accompany them, you decide to leave him in charge of the city when you leave for the tournament. He assures you that he will not fail you, and that he will exercise good judgement in all things. You are sure that he is pretty happy to be trusted with such an important task. He doesn't like the decision to take your brother with you to the tournament though. He understands your reasoning, but he feels that [1] unit of [regular infantry] is not enough of an entourage for the Baron and the heir apparent. But in this, his counsel is ignored.

Garlend: “What use is all my skill in the martial arts if I can't even be trusted to protect my little brother? He will come with me, he needs to see the glory of the joust first hand.”

You wish you had chosen different words. Often you forget that Gustoff is not of noble linage, and cannot participate in the joust himself. Even though his heart is as mighty as the knights of legend. You are swift to apologize, but he waves it off with a smile.

“Thats a fine idea my lord. I'm always happy to see you take an active interest in helping to grow the private sector. When ever you like, you may provide me with the finances to invest back into our towns and villages. Although you may not see the real results of your investments until years after, I can assure you will one day see a return!“

>Go to the closest Fyjord villages and find out what we can trade with them and what could make them raid someone we don't like.
“Thats... Um... “
you see that Sasha grows quite nervous and her hand immediately goes to her hat.
“E-even though I will of course comply to your request my lord, I feel that I should inform you that such an undertaking can be quite dangerous. If you send me with a military escort, that can be seen in the wrong way and they could attack us. If we don't send enough of an escort, they may attack us as a show of disrespect. Or they may just attack us for no reason at all.”

“Even though we already do trade with Fyjord, for example the cheese you ate this morning was imported form Krym, it is mostly done by Fyjord trades who better understand how to do it safely. I have yet to meet a local merchant who can turn a profit trading with the Fyjord. The instability and risk of raids are far too high. Apparently, the people of the Fyjord at times raid each others trade routes“

“I will do my best to reach out to one of these merchants and learn what I can. Although diplomatic missions are not my area of expertise. The people of the Fyjord don't even take coins, but barter for tools and weapons. How does one even begin to open dialogue with someone who doesn’t care about money??? Your father was able to find peace with the tribes, but I don't know anything about it.”

“Oh... Were you not happy with the geologists I had introduced to you earlier? I'm sorry to hear that, ill do my best to take the matter into my own hands. I should have something better for you when you return... I hope.”

Herold : “I won't lie, I was quite upset to hear that you were intending to cut yourself a piece of my pie. But your agreement to my terms, and the troops you sent, show that you are not looking to simply get something for nothing. Your father was an introverted man. Yes, he kept out of everyone’s business, which is good, but he also never sent help when it was needed or agreed to anything anyone wanted from him. I think things can be different between our Baronies now. I just want you to remember one thing: as long as I'm making money, you are making money. There are many Barons who will grow jealous of the prosperity we are both going to find, and they will wish to maintain the status quo, by any means necessary.

You find Herold to be an interesting man, the last thing you could say about him is that he is boring. When he talks about politics, he is stern and serious. You can see he has great asperations. But at all other times, he is quick to wit and enjoys sharing a laugh and drink with anyone he can find. He even tosses dice with the sailors who man the ship. Often, he invites you to join him in some gambling, drinking, and smoking pipe weed to pass the time. Your brother seems to like him, but you worry that he could be a bad influence.

Sigfried: “You don't look so tough, I wish you luck in the tournament. You will need it.”

The (abridged) rules of the tournament:
Each match will consist of four rounds, where the competitors will attempt to earn points. The one with the most points wins. in case of a tie, judges will discus and give the victory to who they deem jousted better. If they can't decide, the two knights will duel it out with swords. The victorious knights will have a days rest before battling their next competitor.

How to play:
I will roll 4 dice, then four people will role one dice each. Each roll represents how well Garlend performed in each round. The winner of the round get +1 point, winning by a roll of eight points or more is +2, scoring a nat 30 represents knocking your opponent off his horse, which is worth +4 points should it be deemed the error of the rider and not his horse. If a knight is dismounted and his horse goes down with him, it means the horse failed the knight and its only worth +2 points. Should the knight be dismounted, but his horse should be unscathed, then it will be deemed the error of the rider.

You are shown to your guest quarters in Oswalds manor. There, you help your brother unpack his belongings and find someone to watch him before heading out on your own for some sight seeing. As you wander about, you decide to take Helena up on her offer and look for her. Yet as you search, a weight starts to be felt around your forehead. You feel as if a phantom wreath hangs over your head and clouds your thoughts. You worry about how Gustoff is faring, and you wonder how much funds you should invest into the growth of Haldrin. You worry about the Fyjord and you wonder about the strength of Oswald's character. Suddenly, you can't help but question if this man who you have known all your life is still your friend. You were looking for Helena, but somehow ended up seeking the company of a fellow Baron. Your host, Oswald himself.

When you meet Oswald in his study, he treats you like he has always done. He asks after your health and wonders if you have found yourself a woman yet. He also wonders if you have had a chance to speak with his daughter or son, as both of them expressed an interest in speaking with you. You return his pleasantries, but soon you can't help but ask him a more direct question. You feel the urge, no, the NEED to confirm that he is still you friend. Not as a man, but as a Baron.

He gives you a cool look and you fear that you have insulted him. But in his eyes is the wisdom of a man that has been a Baron longer then you have been alive.

Oswald: “Aah, so you have started to feel it too. The crushing weight of responsibility.”
>>
He takes a seat on a couch across from you

Oswald: “You must be careful Garlend, you must not only rule with this”

He taps his finger to the side of his head, before moving it to his heart

Oswald: “But this as well. Your mother and father were dear friends of mine, I will not forsake their offspring for the world. That is not all that is bothering you is it? What else can this old man do for you Garlend? What advice can I give you?”

You would like nothing more then to completely unburden yourself to Oswald, but the phantom wreath squeezes down on your skull like a vice. You can almost hear it speak directly into your mind.
“There is no man on this earth that you can truly trust.”

So instead you ask him advice about something more general, and tell him about your worries about the Fyjord.

Oswald: “Ah yes. Let me instead tell you a story about your father, and his first real dealings with the peoples of the Fyjord. You may take from the story what you wish. You see back when he was a young man, the tribes men would come and raid your fathers lands every winter. One day, he was so tired of it, that the moment the snow melted he marched into their lands with only a handful of men seeking reparations from the first tribe he could find! But the tribe told him 'oh no, it wasn’t us, this other tribe did it!'. He would go to the next tribe, and the next and they would all just say the same thing. He got so frustrated that as one of their leaders was telling him thT same story, he just popped the man right in the mouth. That really set the tribe off, they were about to dismember your father right there on the spot. But he called the chief a coward and challenged him to a one on one fight. The chief, with his pride hurt, agreed. Now I never knew a man who didn't embellish a story, but as your father put it, he 'battled that chief for three days and three nights and when they were done, the people of the Fyjord never raided him again.' Which of course isn’t one hundred percent true, he still got raided time to time, but it wasn’t anything like before. Now admittedly, I wasn’t there myself and can only go on what your father told me and his men confirmed. But from the way I see it, is these men respect strength and courage above everything else.”

He gets up and pours out two glasses of wine from a nearby bottle.

Oswald: “Now, that said, I would be remiss if I didn’t tell you that its not how I would have handled things. Those tribesmen are NUTS, your father could have died before he even sired you. Those madmen believe the sky could at any moment fall on their heads, truly a backwards and irrational people. Your best bet is just to deal with the raids the same way we all do, by stationing your men in the villages every winter and hoping they don't show up.”

The day of the tournament isn’t grand or even public. It was mostly relatives and nobles that were invited by Oswald and their guests. You won't be performing for a big crowd today, or gaining much fame, but that's just the way Oswald's tournaments are.

The first match of the day is between Oswald's son Sigfried and William. You have seen William lance before, but never had a chance to joust against him yourself. You know that he is quite prolific at tournaments but rarely gets too far.

As the knights take their places and ready their horses. Oswald stands up and says a few words to officially start the tournament. As soon as he takes a seat the knights are off! You watch your brother to see how he reacts, but are soon enthralled by the sport as Sigfriend dismounts William and sends him sprawling to the ground! What a grand start to the tournament, no one can hold themselves from clapping and cheering. The cheering turns to dull amusement however as Sigfried destroys William round after round. Its not even close. Perhaps William suffered an injury after being dismounted.

Either way, Sigfried moves on to the next round. He rides his horse up to the pavilion housing the three barons, and takes off his helmet. He gives you a cool look, as if to say 'you’re next' before riding off.

After, its you and Hedrick. Your opponent is a fellow knight and the two of you give each other a proper salute. In the first round, you take an easy two points. But in the second round he takes two points off you, and one point in the third! A lose here would be a big upset as you are the favoured to win. Yet in the fourth round you zone in on your opponent and knock his helmet of his head! Scoring two points and winning yourself a place in the winners circle.

The Baron Herold cheers for you and boos at Ser Hedrick
Herold: “Well done Garlend, I knew you would win.”
He raises his voice as to be sure that Hedrick hears him.
Herold: “Knights of Irlean can't lance! They should go back to their flower picking, bloody tree huggers.”

The third round is between Demeir and Dominic. Its unfortunately as one sided as the first round. Domanic dismantles Demeir with the precision of a mathematician. The knights of L.Reichland are having a powerful showing of strength today it seems. One would think that seeing his man get demolished would dampen Herold's spirit. But it seems to have the opposite effect as he jeers at the losing knight. Its possible that the dink is getting to Herold; he may not even know which knight is which. Or possibly, he just doesn’t care. Your brother seems to be enjoying Herold antics and joins him in the jeering. A swift hammer blow with you closed fist on top of his head quiets him up and knocks that bad habit out of him before it has a chance to grow.

The final round is between Lancolt and Fredrick. You have never seen Lancolt before, but have heard of him. “Unbeatable with a lance in hand” is usually the gossip that follows his name. You watch him go round after round, and ultimately be crowned the winner. Yet Fredrick manages to score two points on Lancolt in the third, and you know that Lancolt isn’t as unbeatable as they claim. You are happy that at least the two knights of Otwecc didn’t leave with 0 points.

A day after the first bouts, you find yourself second guessing yourself. You almost lost against your opponent, yet your other soon to be competitors performed spectacularly. The needs of the barony are clouding your mind, making it hard to concentrate. Even as you were lancing with Ser Hedrick, you couldn’t help wonder about the state of Irlean and if you should speak with the knight in order to gleam information.

So you decide to try and put the thoughts of the Barony aside while you are here, and concentrate on the tournament at hand. Continuing with this new line of thinking, you decide to do something for yourself and have that reunion with Helena.

Remembering the garden is her favourite place in the manor, you seek her out there. You soon find her sitting at a bench. Yet she is not alone, speaking with her is William D'orange. You have jousted against this man time and time again, and have spoken to him at great length. Yet now the dynamic is different between you, and he withdraws himself from your mighty company as soon as he is able to find the chance to do so politely. With him gone, its just you and Helena.

Helena: “I was starting to wonder if you would make the time to see me Garlend.”

Garlend: “I felt it was proper to speak with your father first”

Helena: “As is right, you are a Baron now and there is much for you to do.”

She looks you up and down, studying you

Helena: “You know, my father and I had a secret bet about you”

Garlend: “Is that so?”

Helena: “He said the Barony wouldn’t change you, but I disagreed. I think the old Garlend would have come to see me first.”

Garlend: “It has been three years, time changes people. I'm older and wiser now.”

Helena: “Yes, you have certainly filled out too!”

She pokes her finger into your stomach. You know you are being teased, yet a look of worry still crosses your face.

Helena: “Don't be such a baby, i'm only joking. You look as virile as ever.”

Helena's company is nice, Its been a long time since someone made a joke at your expense other then Gustoff. Even your sparring partners walk on tiptoes when discussing your technique now. You give a look around to make sure no one is looking, then flick Helena's forehead.

The two of you spend an hour together in the garden reminiscing and talking. Every now and then a servant seems to poke his head around a corner to make sure you are keeping a fair distance from her. It would be too scandalous if you actually took a seat next to her. Eventually the topic of your younger brothers comes up. You explain about the troubles you are having getting Oliver to stick to his practising.
Helena: “Hmm... Poor Garlend, forced to play the father without the help of a wife. Well, I think that's something I can help you with”
>>
Helena then gets you to accompany her fathers study. When you enter the room you suddenly feel awkward, as there are no servants here. The two of you are now alone, so you prudently leave the door open. She climes up a small ladder to produces a book for you.

Helena; “This book helped my father train my brother, he didn’t take to being a knight very well either. I still don't think he wants to be a knight, but its very important to father so I don't say anything.”

You thank her for the book, and you ask her if she read it herself.

Helena: “Of course! I have read every book in this library in fact. Ser Ternin is very good at making training fun! I'm sure your brother will take well to the lessons.”

She takes several steps towards you and places the book into your hands. Before you notice it, she has entered your personal space. Your oaths as a knight tell you to take a comfortable step back, but you have never retreated before.

Garlend: “On the topic of brothers and knighthood. How do you feel about me competing with Sigfried tomorrow?”

Helena: “Are you looking for me to grant you my favour?”

Garlend: “You have done so before, and it brought me good fortune”

She seems to consider it for a moment. She buys herself more time, looking more and more flustered.

Helena: “To go against my brother and grant you my favour, that is a bold request Garlend...”

She bites down on her index finger.

Unfortunately, the two of you are interrupted by footsteps. A sound that makes the both of you take a step back from each other. Just in time too, as its Oswald who enters the room.

Oswald: “Oh, whats going on here then?”

Helena is quick to reply and use the lent book as both cover and bait. Oswald comes over to examine the book, he has much to say about it to you. This locks you into a conversation with him, giving her a chance to escape without ever answering your request. You watch her leave over Oswald's shoulder, using the small details in her movements and sway of her dress to imagine what she may look like beneath said dress...

You cant help but feel bad about how your duel against Sigfried went. Two points in the first round, one in the second, then another two back to back. You butchered him, 7-0. After the joust Sigfried seems to have just left, seemingly with nothing to say after all his boasting. Your meeting with Helena must have helped clear your mind, and helped you regain sight of who you are. You are the Knight Garlend, invincible with a sword or lance in hand!

Lancolt beat his opponent at a gentle 4-0, knocking both the knights of L.Reichland out of the tournament. Soon, this man will be your opponent. This may be a small tournament, but people will talk about how two of the greats in the sport met here. The winner will not only walk away with [4][coin]s but with [5][prestige] as well!

Day 3 of the tournament is against Lancolt. A win here nets you [4] [coins] and [5][prestige].

NO WAY

Do we actually get to duel it out with swords now? This is pretty sweet.
>>
>>4652908
Depends, the judges have to deliberate first on who jousted better. It will go to swords if they are deadlocked.
>>
>>4652914
It all depends on how they look at it.

If they're going by the overall tournament structure, it would be based on how they're scoring.
Total points, we're up by 1, 11 to 10, 4 in the first, 7 in the second, 6 in the first, 4 in the second.
Points eared each round, taking away from the opponent earned, it's tied 8-8. 1 in the first, 7 in the second. 4 in the first, 4 in the second.

If it's just in this round between us, we barely did better, technically. +9 difference in the first round, -6 difference in the second, tied, and -1 difference in the last round, with no roll higher than 20.
>>
>>4652928
Personally, I'd like if we go to swords. More fun that way and we can gauge Arvalony's strength.

Something I was thinking about earlier: Upper Reichland is actually lower down the river than Lower Reichland. Most of the Upper/Lower divisions I've heard of go by where on a major river the regions in question are, like Upper Canada being higher up the St. Lawrence River than Lower Canada, despite Upper Canada being to the south, and same for Egypt. But maybe I'm wrong, and the Sesip actually flows away from the Glittering Sea.

A day after defeating Sigfried in a duel, you find yourself sparing with your brother during his daily practice. His foot work and swordsmanship are as sloppy as ever. The zeal he had practised with when he returned from Kingsland is starting to fade. You have not had a chance to start reading the book Helena gave you, but if things continue like this you are going to have too.

After the practice, you ask Oliver how he has been enjoying the tournament. All your hopes are shattered as he calls it 'boring' and 'silly', truly this is the hour of wolves. He can see the importance in sword fighting but he doesn’t get the point in jousting. To him its just men holding sticks ramming into each other, while the horse does all the work. You try to explain that its a display of riding skill, accuracy, and courage. He nods and agrees with you, but you can see that he is just saying what you want to hear.

You decide that it would be good to take him on a small field trip, and introduce him to Sigfried. Maybe seeing how competitors interact with each other will help. Its a stretch, but you are not ready to accept defeat just yet.

~

You find Sigfried practising his jousting with Domanic, the other noble of L.Reichland who was participating in the tournament. You catch them mid joust, and are noticed my Domanic who lifts his lance in an attempt to stop the spar. This doesn’t seem to stop Sigfried who splinters his lance against Domanic's armour, almost dismounting him. The sight startles you, as by the rules of chivalry it is improper to strike an opponent who has either dropped his weapon or yielded. On the turn around, Sigfried spots you as well, and slowly trots his horse over to you.

Sigfried: “Garlend... What are you doing here? Have you come to gloat over your victory?”

You can't say that you are ready for his rudeness. Remembering that you have brought your brother here to show him the good side of jousting, you try to remain polite yourself.

Garlend: “I have come to see how you fare, and congratulate you on how well you joust for someone your age.”

Sigfried looks down on you with the same unchanging monotone stare that he has given you in the past. The man has the face for cards, he is unreadable.

Sigfried: “For my age. I see. Garlend why don't you t-”

He is cute off by Dominic, who has rode his horse with some speed in order to stand next to his lord.

Dominic: “Shall we stop here today my lord? Will you be taking company?”

It seems that Dominic has saved you from being but in a very awkward position. You are sure that you were a second away from being insulted.

Sigfried: “No, The Baron was just exchanging pleasantries, and will be leaving. We will continue.”

He gives you a small bow by craning his head. He gallops away to take up his position again, ready to continue lancing with Domanic.

Domanic: “Please excuse him my lord. He is young and your victory has knocked him off a very high pedestal. I know its hard to tell, but the young lord is devastated.”

You thank Domanic and let him return to being Sigfried's punching bag. On your way back to the manor, you don't say anything to your brother Oliver. Yet you know that was an absolute disaster.

Its the final day of the Joust. You look around and see that everyone is in attendance. Even the day laborers and servants have found a place to watch from. In the man pavilion, you even see Sigfried. Across from you is Lancolt, “Unbeatable with a lance in hand“ they say. You have every intent to disprove that theory today. You clear your mind of everything but the horse, the lance, and your opponent. As soon as the flag comes down, you are off.

Your lance splinters and shatters against his crest, a perfect hit and the crowd roars. You feel good, and you start to feel more confident. As the flag comes down again you charge. Yet there is something different in your opponent. The way he sits, the way he leans, the way he holds his lance, its all different. Then you feel his lance connect with you. But it is not perfect, only one point.

Then you feel it, a gnawing sense of doubt. Lancolt has figured you out in a single round. He knows your technique, and he knows how to beat you!

The two of you clash again, but this time its a draw. Both of your lances shatter against one another.

As the final flag falls you ride again, you ride for glory! You will not lose, not today! But you do not find glory, you only find the tip of a wooden lance against your shoulder. Four rounds, two points a piece. The crowd loves it.

As the judges deliberate you take a moment to rest. You soon find yourself to be in the company of your brother.

Oliver: ”Its a tie? What happens now?”

Garlend: “Two sets of two judges will evaluate which of us jousted better. Then after deliberations, they will come thereto to compare notes. If they can't announce a winner, it will come to swords”

The crowd is on edge, it was a fantastic joust to finish off what was a rather one sided dull tournament. Twenty minutes later, the judges return with their verdict. There is no surprise when they are deadlocked, it was too close. It will go to swords after all. Lancelot can joust, he has proven that to you today. Had it gone one more round , he may have ever beaten you. But now, you draw your sword from its scabbard, and your hand is complete. You know nothing of Lancolt's skill with a blade, but you do not believe he can withstand you.

You leave your pavilion and find him waiting in the center of the arena. He draws his sword and points it at you. You touch the tip of his sword with yours and the roar of the small crowd could fill a stadium. The duel has begun.

>how to play
Roll a 1d30! I will reply with a 1d30 of my own. The winner is the first side to win by 10 points. If we run out of IPs to roll a dice against me, then the sword fight is a draw, as it has lasted so long that both competitors are exhausted and cannot continue.

Lancolt takes imitative and swings wide, you lean back to dodge the strike without ever moving your feet. Then, you follow up with a big boot to his armour before he can recover. He is sent two steps back and an overhead strike meets with his head before he can find his footing. If the two of you were not fully enclosed in metal, and your swords were not blunt, it would have been a killing strike. You ready a follow up blow but you see that the damage has been done, you worry that you may have given him a concussion and decide to wait for him to regain composure. Your opponent manages to find his wits enough to see you patently waiting for him. The only knightly thing left to do is for him to take a knee and graciously accept defeat.

For anyone in the crowd who has held a sword, your display was surgical. Truly, a sight to behold. For the rest, it was a dull disappointing duel to follow up such a fine joust. You can over hear Herald in the main pavilion break the silence.

Herold:“Thats IT? At least the wine was good”

But he claps with everyone else just the same.

You walk over to Lancolt who struggles to remove his helmet in order to give him a hand. But the medical team is already on the scene and politely asks you to leave him in their hands. With nothing more to do, you approach the main pavilion to accept you victory. Oswald gives a small speech and congratulates you and all the competitors on their valour. Helena comes forward to present you with the victory medal. She places it around your neck and whispers something into your ear at the same time.

Helena: “I have done something bad Garlend. Check the book I gave you, I'm sure you haven’t opened it yet.”

She then presents you with a small chest filled with [4][coins], and you are met with more clapping.

On the final day everyone is, packing up and getting ready to depart. You don't get a chance to see Lancolt, but hear that he has recovered and that you didn’t cause him any grievous injuries. When you have a moment alone, you check the book Helena gave you. On the final page is a small bound silken cloth, Helena gave you her favour for the tournament after all. Despite the fact that you were about to battle her brother. Did she know you were going to ask for it? Or did she want to give it to you anyway? Either way, you will need to find a moment to return this to her.

Yet your final meeting is not with Helena, but with Oswald instead.

[Oswald]: “Tell me, what do you think of my son?”

Garlend: “Your son? Well. I didn’t get a chance to meet him much but he seems like a fine man. He has much skill with the lance, despite his defeat.”

[Oswald]: “Come now Garlend, what do you really think?”

You have a hard time answering. What do you say when its someones son?

Garlend: “He is a bit... Rough around the edges.”

[Oswald]: “Thats one way to put it. He is arrogant and self centred. But I have reached the limit of what I can do for him. He needs better mentorship. He needs to join the order...”

You know where this is going, Oswald is going to ask you to vouch for his son to join the order of the silver circle, just like he did for you. That means your honour is on the line if he should dishonour himself. But maybe some time away in Nyden would do Sigfried good. It helped shape you into a better man after all. But even as a younger man you would never lance an opponent who has clearly yielded.

You arrive in Haldrin several days later to find everything as you left it. Gustoff has taken good care of your barony for the fifteen days you have been away. A small pile of papers has been left for you to sign, but everything else seems clear. Not so eager to return to the paperwork that has started to define your days, you decide to spend some time with Gustoff. The two of you talk about your time spend in L.Reichland and Gustoffs new found appreciation for how dull the ministers can be. Being military men, you also discus what you have seen of the defensive and offensive capabilities of L.Reichland. You have a strong feeling that you have seen most of what they had to offer: [3] companies of [regular infantry].

Eventually, your brother Oliver shows up.

[Oliver]: “Where is Sasha?”

That's a good question. Where IS Sasha? You haven’t seen her yet. You half didn’t think about it and half assumed she was doing busy work someplace. Yet Gustoff admits to you that he temporarily relieved her of duty so that she could get some bed rest. It seems that while you were away, the adviser had a melt down! She seemed to not be having any success in finding you a better deal with the local geologists, this compounded with her inability to deal with the Fyjord merchants cultivated into her screaming at said merchants and apparently having one of them swearing vengeance upon her house! The matter is dealt with now, but Gustoff still felt it was best to send her home. If you wish, he can sent for her to be reinstated.

Things quickly return to normal and you find yourself sitting in your throne chamber dealing with lobbyists and merchants as usual. Eventually, a man comes forward with a bizarre proposition. He tells you that in his own travels, he came upon a company of performing gypsies who had in their position a bottled fiery from the Fey Wood. The fiery bartered her freedom, by promising to tell him the location of a secret treasure hold within the Feywood. Finding her pitiful, he took it upon himself to comply with her request and he rescued her from her imprisonment. Once free, the fiery flew away, leaving him to deal with the angry gypsies. He thought to have been tricked, but later that night, he saw the Fay wood in a dream and a path to the promised treasure hoard was revealed to him. He has travelled all the way from Nyden, but has run out of funds to complete his quest. This is where you come in. He is asking for [2] [coins] for the equipment and men he will need to undertake the journey. He understands the danger involved, but his plan is to wait until the end of November to attempt entering the wood. He claims that during winter the fey lose their powers and rest, by skirting along the lines where the snow will be too great to traverse and the fey will be weakest, he thinks that he can find success.

[Gustoff]: “The man should be thrown into the dungeons for attempting to swindle the Baron. If mad men want to attempt the Fey wood he is free to do so, but don't waste out time.”

>I agree, throw him in the dungeons for a month. That will make people think twice before they come into my throne room in an attempt to swindle me
>I will give him nothing, but they are free to go.

All your counsellors, all the nobles, men, and all the merchants laugh at the man and his request for gold. By order of Gustoff, your guards move to remove the man from your presence. The whole court is in uproar that someone would dare come to swindle the Baron. Yet, you alone rub you chin and nod your head, something about this man seems genuine. You stun the entire court, and leave everyone dumbfounded with your decision.

[Garlend]: “You know what, I believe him. Set this man up with the money he wants.”

The man seems happy to hear your reply, but he doesn’t look surprised. He tells you that the universe seems to be lining up to make his quest a reality, he knew you would give him the money. Gustoff seems quite displeased, but doesn’t question your command now that you have given it. Instead he takes charge of the finances to make sure every penny is spent on equipment and men. He also vows to personally make sure this man enters the Fey wood on the appointed date, even if it has to be at the end of a spear.

Gustoff comes to you over concerns about potential Fyjord raids this winter. He knows raids were rare under your father, but he doesn’t know if that will persist into your Berony. He doesn't want to miss the Yule festival, but believes that someone should take some troops to Durn, and winter there in case of attacks. Unfortunately, that someone is him. He tells you that the [Elite Troops] will be returning soon, but he doesn’t think it would be good to send them. Citing that they would have just returned from combat, and nobles that make up the [elite troops] wouldn’t be too happy about being send to winter in some village right after.

>Agree, send Gustoff with [1][regular troop] to Durn to winter there.

You decide to let Sasha rest. Hearing that she was screaming at the Fyjord merchants surprised you, its not a side of Sasha you have ever thought to exist. From your dealings with her, she seemed more meek and obedient. Perhaps she is just intimidated by you? You decide that you want to check in on her, maybe pay her a visit. Gustoff approaches you in private in an attempt to dissuade you.

[Gustoff]: “Garlend, I don't know what has gotten into you. Perhaps your time at the joust has made you feel more adventurous. You, the head of your house, can't just show up to a eligible bachelorettes home. Much less actually enter. First you give that charlatan money to fund his suicide run, now this? Why don't you send your brother in your stead? He has been wanting to see her anyway.”

[Oliver]: “Yeah, send me! Ill go.”

Neither you nor Gustoff knew your brother was trailing you and eavesdropping. But he is here now and seems to very much want the responsibility.

The financial adviser that has temporarily taken over Sasha's duties comes to see you about a budgeting question. It was your fathers tradition to host a banquet for the Yule festival for the more well to do people in the Barony. It was a chance to meet and greet all manor of people that you normally would never have a chance too. Artists, priests, bachelors, astrologists, etc. As an example: at last year's festival, you met Sasha. Your father would normally spent [1][coin], but you can spend more. The more you spend, the more people you can meet.

You don't want to see Gustoff leave before Yule and are reluctant too agree, but you know his advice is sound. You ultimately decide to send him off with the men to Durn. On the morning of his departure, you watch from the keep until he is out of sight. You reflect on your shared past. You don't remember Gustoff being so stern and responsible. But his duty has changed him, he has grown into the role that was set out for him. You wonder if you are worthy of his loyalty. Have you done everything in your power to fill the role you that has been put before you? Only time can tell.

The next morning you and your brother set out to Sasha's house. You actually don't know where your adviser lives, but your brother seems too. Its not a long way from the keep at all, Sasha lives in the nicer part of the town. Here the locals can even pay for their own body guards and patrols, and don't need to rely on the town watch. Its still not enough to get away without having a small entourage of body guards follow you around. Its just another thing you have gotten used too now.

When you arrive at the residence, you give the door a hardy knock. As soon as you can get into her house and out of the street the better. People have been watching you ever since you left the keep. It bothers you that you can't be incognito anymore, that's something you can't get used to.

When no reply comes, you give the door a second knock. This time you hear Sasha's voice coming from inside the house. Its hard to make out but its something like “dad, get the door already! i'm not properly dressed”. Yet no one comes, so you have to give it a third knock. At this point, you are starting to feel awkward having to stand here and wait. More so since you and your entourage can hear the private goings on of things happening inside the house. This time, someone finally comes to answer the door, its Sasha herself. She is wearing a lazy and undignified grey dress. Her hair is a mess, and her eyes look like she just woke up. This is Sasha at her most natural state. Her eyes almost explode out of her head when she see's you, your brother, and a plethora of knights. Without saying anything, she turns around and runs back into the house and up the stairs. With the door left open, you invite yourself inside. You try to make yourself comfortable in her waiting room, but even with half the knights waiting outside, you feel like a sardine in a tinbox.

It takes around twenty minutes, but Sasha comes back down the stairs in her proper uniform. Yet, there are many errors in what is usually a painting perfect ensemble. A loose hair here, an upside down pin there, its really quite... cute?

This time Sasha greets you properly, and invites you and your brother to enter the reading room with her. Your brother, not standing on proper protocol, runs up and gives her a hug. He tells her he missed her and was worried about her. Sasha gives him a genuine smile and almost places her hand on his head, but ultimately chooses not to touch him.

Sasha: “I missed you too my lord, but why is it that you and your brother are here?”
>>
As you enter the reading room, you explain to Sasha the reason for your visit. You are simply here to chaperone your brother. Your brother takes the lead to most of the conversation, he tells her about the tournament, L.Reichland, Seigfried, everyone and everything he can think of. You watch Sasha's expression, and try to discern if your brother is bothering her or not with his antics. But if he is, you can't detect it. You remind yourself that she has three younger brothers, so she must be used to dealing with boys. You want to asks her some things yourself. Such as, “how are you feeling?”, that is after all the reason you are truly here. Yet you can't seem to find an opportunity to do so. I start to wonder if if using the brother as a cloak was the right move.

A commotion outside draws your attention, and soon enough a man enters the reading room. He looks exactly what you would expect an over weight nobles men who has been forced to run a great distance would look like. The man is Sasha's father, it seems he has gotten wind of your presence inside his house and made his way here with all haste. Things get more awkward with his presence, but it is his home and Sasha is his daughter, it is quite expected that he too should chaperone. You make pleasantries and small talk with the man while Sasha entertains your brother. Soon you start to feel yourself getting on edge. You came here to ask a single question really, and you have still not been able to do so.

Time passes and the time for you to leave arrives. You still never got a chance to talk with Sasha seriously. At the height of your frustration, you finally manage to blurt out something as you are standing in her doorway.

Garlend: “When will we see you return to work?”

Sasha: “I'm ready now my lord, when ever you will have me back.”

You want to pick her up and carry her back to the keep, its where she belongs after all. Yet the pinch of your invisible crown keeps you focused. It whispers to you the truth you already know: ”A Baron should not be seen playing favourites”

Garlend: “Take the rest of the moth off, then promptly return to your duties”

She gives you a low bow.

Sasha: “Yes my lord.”

It is December 15th, the time of the Yule festival. The only pagan ritual to survive the expansion of the mainstream religions. No one knows when it started, or why its celebrated, but its always been extremely popular. Nowadays, its a time of giving, showing outward love to your family, and strengthening of relationships. You receive letters of appreciation not only from Kingsland and L.Reichland, but also from Torlumbia. As well as many letters from smaller individual entities, like the house of William D'Orange. You wish Gustoff was with you to enjoy the bachelorettes looking for dancing partners. So you make a small promise to yourself, that you will make it up to him next year. Outside, the cold snow falls hard. On the inside, the fire roars and all the bodies mingling together creates warmth. You feel bad for the Knights you had drilling this morning, but it was necessary to show strength to the few Fyjord merchants that had agreed to stay for Yule. You just hope it works.

You head into the crowd and walk among your subjects...

You receive an unexpected proposition from a noblemen, he shows you a portrait of his daughter and tells you that he is looking for a husband to take her hand. It was not his intention to come all the way here to ask you, but since he learned that you are [27] years old and still not married, he thought he would make the offer...

Its a surprise to you seeing a man of the church, celebrating the Yule festival. You can't help but ask him of his thoughts on the holiday.

[Church Official]: “The church has a lenient stance on the celebration. It doesn’t preach anything false and it is not felt to be a danger to the soul. It is not considered a “holy day” however, to consider it such would be quite the blasphemy my lord.”

But why is he here? He doesn’t actually seem to be enjoying himself.

[Church Official]: “You see I was sent by my superior with a proposal for you my lord. It is the Great Fathers work that we have met each other here today so casually. We want to build a cathedral here in your city to spread the faith...”

[The house of God]
For the price of [5][Coins] and one year construction time, a cathedral will be built in the city of Haldrin. The money doesn’t have to be payed all in one go, but it will never be complete until the full price is payed. A Cathedral will...
- Increase growth and moral in the city
- Reduce the presence of witches and dragon cults in the region
- Win some favor with the church
- 1 free adviser, payed for and maintained by the church.

Garlend: “Will you be that adviser?”

[Church Official]: “No my lord, my work calls me elsewhere. We have someone else in mind, a high ranking Cleric will arrive to oversee construction and be your intermediate with the church.”

You walk into Sasha and your brother! You almost didn’t recognize her, instead of her normal uniform she is wearing a black laced dress. She blushes and has a hard time looking you in the eyes. Your brother informs you that Sasha wasn’t going to attend this year, since she had so much work to catch up on. But he had asked her to be his date this year and she didn’t refuse. He seems pretty proud of himself, and stands tall with his chest out. Sasha on the other hand, turns right around as she is no longer able to face you.

Garlend: “You’re going to grow into quite the womanizer when you grow up aren’t you?”

Oliver: “N-NO! Ill be like father! He was faithful to mom even after she died...”

Thats true, but your brother doesn’t know that before he met your mother, he was apparently quite the lover of the fairer sex. Either way, it makes you happy to see your brother had overcome the death of your father and has returned to his old self. You put your hands on his shoulders and kiss him on the head. He doesn’t like this, but Yule is a good time to show your brother some affection and love.

As the party starts to die down, you spot a familiar face, Ser Hedrick! One of the competitors that found his end at the tip of your lance a month or so ago. He accompanies a slender, pale woman that you mistake as his wife. You are soon corrected however, for the woman standing before you is Illiandra of the forest, first daughter to the Baroness of Irlean. You are caught off guard by such a high profile attendee, you had no idea she was even in the region. That is by design apparently, Illiandra informs you that they had just arrived today after crossing the Fey wood in secret.

The people of Irlean are a curious folk. Back in the days of the king, Irlean was a cabal of forest watchers and druids. They maintained the mystical forest and made it safe for the kings and queens of old Ynedrred to walk among its mystical creatures. But since the coming of the dragon, things have changed. The woods no longer allows the safe passage of man, and only the druids of Irlean seem to be able to commune with the wild and dangerous wood. Supposedly, they work hard to keep the forest from overrunning the surrounding Baronies. Yet there are many who say they control the power of the forest to their own ends. The Baron of Kingsland is one such man.

Garlend: “Why have you come my lady? I cannot believe it is to secretly enjoy the humble celebration I have put together.”

Illiandra: “You have guessed correctly O great lord. I have come with tidings of doom and counsel. Despite the wisdom of the druids, the Baron Herold of Kingsland has made war on the Everwood. He cuts deep into her roots with axe, and burns her heart with fire. He blinds himself with the wealth of the earth and it hollows his soul in turn. He has now drawn you into his conflict. Soon, he will ask more of you, and you must refuse. We have held back the wood and kept your men safe. But the wood has grown dark and angry, we will not be able to shield your men again. If your troops should return to fight in his name, their blood and sinew will feed the forest. The Great wood will grow darker still as it feast on the black souls of men”

Garlend: “I can't help but feel that this is a threat more then a warning my lady”

Illiandra: “It is the future my lord, I have seen it. You may ride to it or you may adjust your course. It is not us who use the forest as a sword to attack our enemies, it is us who shield you from the forest with our lifeblood. Think hard on my word O sword lord, and may you find the same wisdom that graced your father.”

The lady of the forest bows low to you, lower then one of her station would be expected too.
