You know, every father has dreams. Dreams for yourself, dreams for your family.

Dreams that you'll retire early, dreams that your kids'll get a scholarship.

Then there's the nightmares.

One of the worst being that your kid falls in with the wrong crowd. Or, at least it is for you.

Mary's been coming home late recently. Tired.

So tired that she's literally been dragged in by her friends, and half the time she's leaning on their shoulder.

The other half of the time, you notice the bloodstains.

>Hey there, this is a one-shot. Inspired by that one quest a while back that did the same thing, except I'm probably worse at writing and have definitely watched 100% less magical girl anime. Let's get started, shall we?

Mary's at the door, you can hear her knocking. As usual, she's got her arm around one of her friends. Sarah, was it?

>Open the door and let Mary in.

You open the door.

"Hey there, Mary. Rough night?"

M(ary):"Yeah, Dad. Wasn't the best."

"Hmm. I've got food in the fridge, take a seat on the couch for a bit?"

And with that, Sarah practically drags your daughter in through the door, past the coffee table, onto the couch.

You head to the kitchen to cook something up for them. Soup, specifically. Whatever it is she's been doing, it needs to be able to go down easy.

You manage to catch Sarah on the way out, while the soup's on the stove.

"Would you mind staying for dinner? She doesn't seem to be feeling all that well, it might be good for her to have a friend here. Besides, I've been wanting to meet her friends."

S(arah): "Oh! No, I don't mind, I told my parents I was going out for dinner at a friend's anyway."

Thus tempted by the offer of soup, she stays for dinner. Brilliant!

You decide to eat at the coffee table. They don't look up to moving that much.

About halfway through their bowls, you decide to spring the question.

"Alright, we need to talk. What's been going on?"

M: "I was out. With my friends."

She gets a bit blunt when she's tired.

"Doing what?"

You, on the other hand, are always blunt. She's not in a state to lie convincingly right now, after all.

M: "I was uhhh..."

S: "We were at the mall, shopping, going to the movies, doing that kind of stuff."

Yeah, that sounds about right.

You set down your bowl of soup and deliver the dadliest glare to Sarah that you can muster.

"Young Woman, you have 30 seconds to explain what you just tried to do to me or you're out of the house."

Her eyes are wide, shocked. So are your daughter's. She's in on this too. Whatever it is.

M: "Uhh, she, uh, it's kind of hard to expl-"

S: "Just forget about it," She cuts in, "I'm leaving."

You feel whatever it was she just tried to do happen again, and this time you aren't taking no for an answer.

"Sit. Down."

She opens her mouth to reply, but something in your glare tells her to do otherwise.

You look at your daughter.

"You Explain, since I can't trust her."

And then she explains. And you believe her. Sort of. Not because of any of whatever it was Sarah was trying to do you, but because you trust your daughter.

Actually, no, it technically was whatever she was trying to do to you. Just in a more mundane manner than magically forcing your brain to accept something as truth.

You still want to meet this "Cubey" thing. Something to affirm to yourself that, no, you're not going crazy. Or that if you are, you've gone far enough off the deep end for it not to matter.

The only thing you can say though is...

"Young Lady, I strongly disapprove."

M: "W-What! But I'm a hero! I save lives!"

"Without telling me. In the dead of night. With no adult supervision whatsoever. At the behest of a ferret. Fighting against Demons."

M: "Well, it's not reeeaallly a ferret, it's-"

"A ferret."

S: "Well, I'm going home."

"Fair enough. It's getting pretty late."

And you watch her walk out the door.

"And you Young Lady. You, are grounded. Indefinitely."

M: "What?!? Why?!?"

"You didn't tell me. And until I hear something reassuring, I won't let it up."

M: "Fiiiine. How about this. My friends come over and we can all tell you about everything, and you can let up the grounding."

"Acceptable. Now, off to your room, Mary. You need sleep, and I need to think."

Now, you wouldn't say that you're a paranoid man. But when something's wrong, something's wrong.

You get your gun. You've got more around the house, of course, but this one is special because it's the only one by your bedside. That's because the only things in the house that have more oomph are the shotgun and the hunting rifle.

You take slow, measured steps to your daughter's room.

You ease open the door to your daughter's room and... nothing. It's empty.

>4 minutes to get ready
>+.5 from minimal preparations
>You make it with time to spare.

You grab only the bare necessities. Some more loaders for the revolver, some boots, and a jacket. And the sword.

Ah, the sword. A family heirloom for, oh, 400 years? It's been sitting on the mantelpiece for as long as you had it. But when you lay eyes on it, something feels right, in a way like your pistol does. It's been used, you can tell that much. It's also been cared for, you know what a neglected weapon looks like and it isn't one.

'Course, you've never swung it before, but you can only carry so many rounds and the scabbard fits quite well onto your belt.

Off into the truck. Of course it's a truck, what are you, some kind of pansy?

You close in on Mary rapidly. She's not moving fast, wherever she's going. You'd wager out hunting, but if they're hunting, why don't they have some kind of transport?

Wait, they probably can't drive.

And, as you remember, pulling around the corner at NOT safe speeds that you'd go into a fit at your daughter making, probably something to do with magic.

You see a fire in the distance.

You decide that seeing as where there's smoke there's fire, where there's fire, someone had to set it. Or, in this case, something.

You'd best head them off before they get there, if you just follow their trail you might end up getting there too late to talk some sense into them. That sense being "Go home or I go with you". Or they might ignore your advice.

Yeah! They can't ignore your advice if you're already there!

Because you are, in fact, already there. It's a park and, hoo boy, there isn't really a good place to park with all the rubble and torn up trees.

You drive in. It's a difficult task, or at least it would be if your truck wasn't capable of just kind of... going over most of it.

Ah. There's the problem. Great big stonking portal disgorging a horde of demons. You kind of see why magic is necessary to deal with this, but not necessarily teenage girls and "the power of love". Power of violence more like.

Well. At least it's a small horde. You might not have a frame of reference, but it looks small.

You realize, in a moment of clarity, that the greatest weapon that you have is your truck.

And by God is it a fine weapon.

One, Two, Three, Four, one after the other. You have to swerve to miss some of the big guys, don't want to damage the truck, but the little ones are small enough that running them over gives you nothing but great joy, and not impending worry of having to explain this to your insurance company.

You aren't trying to hit the demons, per se, but you definitely cut a swathe through them, sure as a knife through butter. Oh sure, some of them try to fight back, but claws aren't good against steel, and their fireballs really aren't cutting it.

You'd wish they were tighter packed, if you didn't also worry about your truck.

You pull up behind the lady, the portal that she's holding open disgorging a steady stream of assorted nasties.

You shoot her, again. You would probably feel sick, if you didn't have so much adrenaline in your system right now.

This time, you hit her in the chest, and she drops like a stone. Thankfully, no one's taken the opportunity to ambush you on this pile of rocks, but that probably has something to do with the explosions and shouting you've started to hear. Suspiciously high pitched shouting.

"I, Young Lady, am providing adult supervision. And you're also still grounded, Mary."

M: "I'm saving the world!"

You raise an eyebrow at her, before turning your incredulous gaze back on the... witch? Summoner? Rogue mage? You don't rightly know the correct term. Anyways, they were subdued with... relative ease, actually.

You turn to look back at your daughter, eyebrow still raised quizzically.

"Now Miss... Teresa, was it? What am I going to do with you?"

>Leave her there. She's learned her lesson.
>Ask your Daughter, she probably has a good idea.
>You DO have more questions you want to ask her, and you DO have a perfectly good basement...

>>You DO have more questions you want to ask her, and you DO have a perfectly good basement...

The official reason that you give your daughter as you toss her into the backseat and your soon to be "guest" in the passenger's seat, is that you both don't want to kill her and can't trust her not to do this again. No matter how much she insists that, no, they don't keep this up after being caught and beaten.

The UNOFFICIAL reason is that you want to learn about this magic thing from a (semi)rational adult.

M: "Dad, come on, I need to let my friends know I'm okay!"

She says, leaning forward from the back seat.

"Just yell out the window, honey," you reply, buckling Teresa in while she bleeds all over your car. "Make sure to buckle up," you throw over your shoulder at Mary, who still looks rather shell shocked at how casual you are about this.

You see some of Mary's friends and a floating ferret making their way to your truck as you kick it into reverse, resolving to...

>Ignore them
>Say bye
>Explain yourself

As the horrible screech of rubble on car chassis overtakes your eardrums.

Perfection
>98 means the truck only has superficial damage
>97 means the team is just curious

As you pull away from the pile of rubble, you notice the rapidly disintegrating corpses of all of the little ones that you ran over get significantly more squished.

As you make a series of tight turns, you stick your head out of the window to deliver your response to Mary's friends.

“Bye guys, you can come see Mary when she’s not grounded!”

The sounds of incredulity, what few you can hear over the engine, are amazing. Their faces are pretty good too, you've never seen a ferret look shocked before.

"Say bye, Mary!"

Mary, knowing better than to argue with you, sticks her head out the window with an unenthusiastic "bye"

Ah, the reactions are even better. You're actively holding in a laugh as you finally leave the park.

On the drive home...

Ex-military, possibly a single father (no wife mentioned yet), and maybe mind wiped after dealing with other magic shit.
>>
>>4641036
No, he just... had a tier 1 first encounter with the magical side of life that VASTLY overestimated the limits of regeneration when applied against high caliber handheld pistols. This would be a filler encounter for your daughter's team, whereas you simply had the advantage of shock and her being mostly dead for most of the fight.

I'll just tell you guys this now OOC, and say you learned it later IC, but most magical creatures past a certain threat level have multiple healthbars and *some* kind of regen, even if it's weak. A normal weapon has to clear through each healthbar until their enemy is too magically exhausted to regenerate and finally dies. A magical weapon/attack, on the other hand, only has to clear through the first healthbar. If you'd been using the sword, she wouldn't've gotten up after dropping the first time.

Your guest is an example of a weaker example of this, while your daughter has powerful enough regen to be noticeably fine after most fights. The Imps(weak ones) are so weak they have no regen, and probably would die to a hard enough kick. The big ones, on the other hand CAN regen, and only have 2 healthbars.
>>
>>4641060
Yes, single father. Maybe Ex-military, but I didn't factor in bonuses for such a thing. And the success that he had wasn't from that, in any case, seeing as he lacked the bonuses from that.
>>
>>4641062
forgot to mention, the healthbars get successively smaller. Her first was 25, then the next one was 15. She actually had one more, and would've tried running away if you didn't let her surrender.
>>

"So, why didn't you invite me before, that was fun!"

Mary is too busy spluttering to give you an answer, at least for the first few seconds.

If you weren't so busy driving, you'd probably have noticed the mildly concerned look that Teresa is giving you.

M: "Fun?!"

"Yes, Fun. I figure you wouldn't be doing this if you didn't enjoy it in some way."

M: "W-well, it is fun, but I didn't think you would enjoy it."

"Whaddaya mean? You telling me that we could've been having Father-Daughter bonding time and you didn't tell me because you didn't think I'd enjoy it?"

M: "Well, uh... You don't have magic. And you, uhh... kind of need magic to do things like this easily enough to have fun with them?"

"Mary, I always enjoy a challenge."

Silence reigns in the truck.

"So... How did you get the magic again?"

M: "Oh! That's easy, I got it as a gift so I could fight!"

You hear Teresa snort at this.

"A gift from the ferret?"

M: "Yup!"

"With no strings attached?"

M: "Just the fighting, but I wanted to do that anyway! So, Yup!"

"Hmmm."

You don't trust that ferret.

As you pull into the driveway, you notice Teresa is looking noticeably better, and visibly winces at the sight of your house.

T: "Uhh, you... Might not want to go in there Mr."

"What? Why?"

T: "I kind of sent a demon to the house of the most isolated member of your daughter's team."

"..."

T: "Which is your house..."

M: "I can, you know."

She looks sufficiently chastised.

I wasn't expecting so much support!

M: "Oh, uh, gimme a sec before we go in."

"Sure."

You spend a few moments reloading your cylinder of ammo, as your daughter does... something. Something magic. She looks... hazy, but you can still see her.

"What was that?"

M: "Just making sure we won't wake up the neighbors. Susan's a lot better than I am at this stuff, but I'm good for the house."

You turn to look at Teresa.

"Don't go making a run for it now. I've got questions."

T: "NOPE! No sir, not even thinking about it!"

As you're about to enter the door, you notice...

>The air becoming noticeably hotter, and a smell like singed hair.
>The air becoming noticeably colder and goosebumps on your skin.
>The air beginning to smell like ozone and static on your skin.
>The earth rumble, and your bones unwillingly trembling.
>A vast weight bearing down on you.
>A leaf floating downward just a little too slowly.

You notice the lamp shaped light above the door start to glow a bit brighter, and as you look back at your daughter, you notice that not only is she holding a wand and metaphorically glowing about the prospect of killing a demon with you, she is also literally glowing.

"So is that what you can do?"

M: "Yup! I can also do other things, this is just me warming up! What, did you think glowing was all I did?"

For the record, it wasn't. For the record. After all, glowing incandescently is a very useful ability.

As you open the door, you notice that the living room is in disarray. And by disarray, you mean that the carpets are torn up, there are gouges in the (very sturdy) walls, and all of the furniture is overturned.

You know, there are a few things in life that you love. One of them is your daughter. Another is your truck, and another is your house.

One of them is your shotgun. You served with it, and when you got back home you made sure that the armorer took care of it. And when it came time to clean house at the base workshop, you called in a favor and had him send it to you.

She's been yours ever since. Angelina used to joke that you paid more attention to it than her at some times.

You pump a blast into it at point blank range, and watch it not just drop, but actually disintegrate.

Shelly's never let you down before, and she won't now. Yes, you named your shotgun, what kind of self respecting American doesn't?

"Hey. Calm down, I'm not going to hurt you."

"Bu-"

"I am not going to hurt you. You are going to come inside, and check if the basement's still livable with Me and Mary. If it isn't, you're going to help make it livable, and ten the rest of the house. I'd say that's punishment enough."

"O-okay."

She seems to have calmed considerably, even if she starts to get nervous again once she sees the devastation. Eh, probably just regret. You can sympathize, you've broken a lot of stuff and regretted it later.

Or she doesn't like hard labor like fixing the house will take, in which case you don't care in the slightest, because hard labor builds good character.

Thankfully, the basement's liveable, even if it isn't the most luxurious.

You used to use it as a gaming and training area, but you converted some empty storage rooms a while back, and now you have another, slightly smaller house under your house.

It's still mostly storage though, which is why the bedroom is nothing but 3 beds and a curtain.

You wake up. You've had a long, hard day yesterday, and you really, really don't want to get out of bed, but Teresa and Mary are talking, so you do anyway.

M: "But like... why? Couldn't you do something a little less... evil?"

T: "Excuse me, but it's hard to get into magic if you don't have a master, you take what you can get."

M: "I didn't have a master."

You can hear the smug in your daughter's voice when she says that.

T: "No, you had a magic sugar ferret."

M: "Excuse me?"

T: "You heard me."

M: "Well, at least I have friends."

T: "Who needs friends when you have magic?"

M: "Me! And you! Everyone needs friends!"

T: "I don't, loser. You can't even learn magic on your own."

M: "WHAT? I'll have you know that I had to work hard to get to where I am!"

T: "And I worked harder, boo hoo you lazy extrovert."

M: "That's not even an insult!"

T: "You just don't understand it."

You should probably stop them soon, they look like they're about to get a bit more... physical.

M: "WHAT EVEN IS THERE TO UNDERSTAND?"

T: "Nothing, because you talk to people, in person, like some kind of socialite."

Oh, shit, they're getting out of their chairs.

"Girls."

Their heads snap over to you, as you give them your best look of fatherly disappointment. It works, despite only one of them being your child.

"Apologize."

As they apologize to each other you look at them, harder.

"Not just to each other, you also woke me up."

You get your apology too.

T: "The problem is that if you don't work for it, so you don't utilize it as well as you could've. You don't know the basics, so you don't learn usually proper control, either. I've seen it before, even if I haven't been around long. Someone gains access to some wellspring of power, and then they only ever use a variation on the first spell that they cast. For fighting, that is."

Your daughter seems slightly embarrassed at her final two lines.

T: "I will admit, they," She says, looking at your daughter, "Don't usually need to. They'll be powerful enough to coast by on one type of magic, not even counting whatever weird stuff they might get, in the case of your daughter. I, on the other hand, can't just keep casting one spell. You reminded me of that yesterday, rather harshly."

"What do you mean?"

T: "About the 'weird stuff' or the casting one spell thing?"

"Both, please."

T: "Those girls your daughter hangs out with? They can do things that no normal mage can, both power-wise and control-wise. One of them? She can just... teleport. Like that," she says, snapping her fingers. "I did my research beforehand, you see, even if I didn't really prepare much else. Normally, it requires at least a few minutes even if you're absurdly good, or some prep work. Even then, it's not near as clean, so to speak. So far, it seems like they can also do more normal ma-, wait, what am I saying. Hey, shoot off a spell."

M: "What? Why?"

T: "Example purposes."

M: "Fine."

Mary shoots a beam of light, about as strong as a laser pointer.

T: "I'd bet you can either only do some version that, or that and some other, really impressive thing."

M: "I, uh... just... that..."

Your daughter seems embarrassed.

T: "That's 'normal' magic. The bit with teleporting I mentioned isn't. Showing an example is a bit easier than explaining. Now, about the casting one spell thing. What I should've done was either put up a barrier or get that gun away from you. I... wasn't thinking straight at the time."

Well, that's a lot to think about.

Ask more questions if you want more answers, spoiler them if it's OOC.

T: "It's hard because you either need someone to open you up to magic, or you need to get lucky and find something that lets you open yourself up. I got lucky, and found a book that taught me how to get started. She," she says, gesturing at Mary. "Had someone open her up. Something." Mary looks mildly offended at that. "Not just opened her up, but also pumped her full of extra juice. A lot of it."

T: "Normally, a master only gets you started, then passes on whatever techniques they can. My master was my book, which I don't have at the moment, because you... imprisoned me? Kidnapped me? Not really sure, but, uhh. Yeah. I don't mind that much though, it's better than my old place."

T: "Oh, The thing in the park. Things uhhh. They get fuzzy after about a week ago. Only today and before then is clear. Not uh.. not really sure why I thought it was a good idea. Or how I learned to do that. Wasn't anything in the book for it."

M: "Dad, are you seriously thinking of letting her live here? I can teach you magic if you want!"

"Yes, I am. I'm not going to kill her, and I'm not going to just let her go. Think of it as rehabilitating her, because I can't just let her leave and possibly have her do that again, but even worse."

Mary, seemingly shocked that you actually thought of killing her, decides that, yeah, basement witchood is better than death or her going back to popping open portals.

>+1 Basement Witch!
>Teresa has decided that a nice, roomy basement is better than a studio apartment, and that being a full-time witch is better than customer service. If anyone asks, you decided to rent out your basement for extra money.

You decide that, after yesterday, everyone deserves a good breakfast.

And, with canned and frozen goods, you deliver.

Hashbrowns, pancakes, bacon, and an unfortunate lack of eggs, next to a glass of juice for everyone.

Teresa looks like she's about to cry, and if she's reacting like this you're pretty sure that she's been living off of frozen dinners and ramen if what she said about her apartment is true.

Mary is quite pleased, seeing as even she wasn't expecting a good breakfast, y'know, in a basement.

You even surprise yourself a little.

With that over with, you decide to...

>Call Mary's friends, you want that explanation and Mary wants to be ungrounded.

It's taken almost two hours, but you clean up the house. All the shattered wreckage of just about everything that wasn't bolted down is now outside of your home.

Thankfully, you had three people, even if you did most of the work. Mary, although she tried, simply wasn't very effective, and Teresa almost collapsed an hour in so you sent her downstairs.

>Get Teresa's stuff. It's both magical and valuable.

oof

Somehow, it takes you just over four hours to get everything. The Home Depot you normally go to was closed for renovations, so you went to Teresa's apartment first, and wow, you understand why she was so eager to leave. Your kitchen is almost as big as her entire apartment, even if you include[i/] the bathroom.

The floor is also covered in a week's worth of mess, which Teresa assures you is not a habit she's planning on keeping.

It makes you sad, even if Teresa's reunion with her book makes you happy.

And the most redneck looking stovetop chemistry set you've ever seen, which she assures you is meant for alchemy and isn't, in fact, the world's least safe meth lab.

>You gained "Corbin's Guide to the Lesser Elements; 23rd edition"
>It is Teresa's beloved book of magic, and where she gained her knowledge.
>Most of it, at least.
>With it, she can now teach you the spells within, and some *very* simple alchemy.

After this, you head to a different Home Depot that's actually open, but the staff there is relatively unhelpful. You get the plaster and assorted repair supplies for the fridge (like fuck you're buying a new one, they're expensive).

Everything looks the same once you get home, except...

"You see, it's very rude to enter someone's house uninvited. Especially when I'm not here. Especially when I don't know your names. In fact, it's downright criminal. Why, you could've given me a heart attack if I was anyone else. It's an intrusion into a man's inner sanctum, one not easily forgiven. So. "And for the explanation..?"

S: "I'll leave that to QB."

You call him 'Cubey' in your head anyway. You think it's funnier that way.

C: "Hi! So, I believe you already know what we do here, right? Stop magical threats to the city!"

"But why are you using teenaged girls and not adults?"

C: "The reason is that either you have to know about magic, or you have to be young to see me. Otherwise, I look a lot more... normal! And I can't get adults into it if I can't talk to them, no? That's also why I can't ask for permission!"

"So, Joan. Why did you get into this whole... business?"

J: "Oh! My sister, Diana, she joined and I joined too so that I could keep her from getting hurt. Or at least help put her back together when she did."

Huh. That's a good reason.

"So, what do you girls do?"

D: "Kill things!"

"I knew that, I mean from person to person. What are your roles?"

D: "I kill things. But like. better than everyone else."

J: "She's being honest, that's her job. I keep her from killing the wrong things and I put things back together. It's dangerous work, so I need to look out for everyone and keep them together. Literally."

S: "I keep everyone else on track. I also erm... deal with the whole... witnesses issue. Not like that, I just convince them there was an accident or something, and not a magic fight."

"Convince" your ass. It's probably what she tried doing to you.

J: "Oh! I also help repair the scene so that there's less questions. That park yesterday looks fine now."

"So, Mary, what do you do?"

M: "I'm new so my role isn't really... defined, yet."

"Fair enough. So," you say, turning back to Cubey, "When were you going to tell me that my daughter was risking her life like this?"

C: "Never!"

"So," you say, "Now that I do know, will you tell me?"

C: "Well gee mister, since you're asking so nicely I will! Or I'll have someone do it for me!"

There's a large gap in the conversation.

"So... Any of you want to learn how to shoot a gun?"

M: "What!?"

S: "What?!"

D: "YES!"

J: "If Sis is going!"

C: "Yes please!"

You weren't expecting the ferret to respond, but okay.

S: "But why?!?"

"It's a valuable skill to have and extremely useful for self defense."

S: "But we have magic! Why would we use a gun when we have magic?! Especially to fight!"

"Shit, it worked for me."

S: "Is THAT what the noises were!?"

"If you mean yesterday at the park, probably."

S: "I-"

J: "Joan, I'm going because I'm not going to be able to stop Diane from going. You should probably come with."

Mary looks shocked, but not displeased.

Thanks for running QM.

Since I have a feeling the dad will become a lot more active in the whole magical girl business, especially with the basement witch, will we be able to turn our house into some kinda magical girl home base? Also will we be getting more backstory on both Mary and her dad?
>>

Yes you will, actually. Seeing as you're the one and only (semi)magical dad of the group, this is the only adult supervised, private place that they can discuss Magical Girl business.

You'll get more backstory if you ask for it or if it comes up in the story.

Also, you're welcome. I started writing this quest to hone my writing skills.

I can say this, the only thing supernatural was the dumbassery that your company got into.

If you've encountered supernatural stuff before, you don't know it. That's what this post >4635198 up here's for.

The most beneficial thing you could do (in character) with magic that I can see is using it to augment your physical combat. IE, getting your hands on a book of Body magic/researching your way into it and using it to improve your body OR just straight up boosting your magic capabilities and benefitting from it passively like Teresa does to get multiple healthbars.

"Alright. Mary, you're ungrounded. Girls, come back on Sunday and we'll head out to the range."

You barely get to hear their protests before you usher them out the door, which is something you've always been good at.

"Mary, I'm coming with you next time. No buts. No denial. If you didn't have someone who can apparently put you back together, I wouldn't let you go at all."

M: "Uggghhh. Fiiiinne."

You can tell that she's secretly very pleased that she gets to keep doing this.

And with that you go to work. Not actual work, you called in vacation time, but work fixing the house.

It goes well. You consider this as Teresa's punishment, because she very much looks like she's feeling it. No matter how much she insists that she can just use magic to fix it, you forbid her, because magic doesn't build character like hard labor.

You decide to do a bit more... supervising, than actual work. You leave the dangerous stuff to yourself, like making sure the outlets aren't broken and the electricity still works. Thankfully, it does.

When all's said and done, you find yourself very glad that the water wasn't damaged.

>House repaired!(You still need to refurnish, but you never liked that couch anyway. Or the bed. Or- you know what, you get the picture.)

You decide to help Teresa set up her methl- ERRRR Alchemy set! Everytime you see that thing you have a flashback to Breaking Bad and instinctively go 'methlab', and not 'Alchemy set'.

Really though rather than collaboratively setiing it up, it's Teresa talking about alchemy as you watch her, because you kept putting it together wrong because you have no idea how this thing works.

T: "... And that's why no self respecting alchemist makes love potions. All done!"

"Huh? Oh, great!" you say, drowsily. You started nodding off there for a bit.

T: "Anyway, you said something before this about learning magic?"

>Yeah, I have questions(say them)
>Yeah, lets get started

>Yeah, I have questions
What's the basis or source of magic? Is it one universal source with many ways of using it or is it more like the difference between heat, electricity, motion, etc.?
>>
>>4669036
T: "I don't know if anyone's died trying to do this, but trust me, if I can do it and survive, someone like you can too. The book is also one of the best for it, it's a sort of... elemental magic primer, including the process of opening up someone's magic, or doing it for yourself. I did the second. The book also has a volume of more advanced spells, but that's for later."

>>4669352
T: "Like... Two towns over? I came here because housing's cheap and there's a university nearby, and I would've gone there if I hadn't found the book."

>>4669780
T: "I... don't... know..." she says, deep in thought. "Good question, there're probably other sources of magic out there, and I know you can definitely get power on loan like your daughter, but the one the book teaches about is your inner well of magic. An inner well that can be expressed any number of ways, and the book teaches you how to express it in the elemental paths."
>>
>>4671223

"How can I figure out what or where my inner well or magic is?"
>>
>>4671266
T: "That's what the spell is for. You know, the one I'm going to cast on you if you're serious about learning magic."
>>
>>4671313

"Ok... let's get started then. Do your worst I guess..."
>>
>>4671317
I'll count this a vote for getting started.

T: "Great! So, this might sting a little since it's my first time doing this, but it'll all be okay, since it's apparently way easier to do this than to get magic yourself."

"Wait that doesn't soun-"

The panic you were about to erupt into turns out to be unfounded, and it really does only sting a little. Like getting a shot (no, not getting shot, the kind with a needle), but it's deeper? Somehow?

>You gained Magic!
>10/10
>The above score is your amount of current magic. Everyone calls it something different (The Well, Mana, Chi, a couple of weebs insist it's called Hamon, you get the picture). You can either spend it on spells, or spend it to boost (most of) your rolls by an amount equal to the magic spent.

You feel invigorated.

T: "It worked! I think."

You try and pull (at Teresa's instruction) on that well inside you.

She's already assured you that she's ready for anything that might happen.

You pull on it. Hard.

And with it, you hear...
>The crackle of flame, and also your smoke alarm.
>That noise the fridge makes at 3pm after you fill your glass with ice.
>A crack like a hammer, and muffled cursing.

You pull. And, much like what happens whenever you pull on something heavy and you make it come loose, you fall on your ass. Literally.

You also hear muffled cursing coming from upstairs, and you soon see both the reason and the culprit.

The reason being that you seem to have caused a huge crack to run throughout the roof of the basement, which thankfully isn't collapsing, but definitely was jarring enough to get your daughter to drop her lunch on the ground, if you're hearing the increasingly clearer shouting correctly.
