You are Zedek, of no surname, a young man that has sacrificed his humanity for a chance to become as the heroes of childhood stories. As a chimera, you grow stronger by obtaining monster corpses and bringing them to your benefactor, the infamous Witch of Tharazar, Endorai.

In the past days, you slew a beast that was terrorizing Tharazar, made an unlikely friend in a lowlife named Chungus, registered in the Adventurer's Guild, killed many goblins, rescuing two adventurers in the process, learned that your benefactor has a stranged daughter, and bungled your way through a date. A date in which you prevented Endorai from ruining a girl's life and met the unpleasant Duke Umveos. You also agreed to sneak into an expedition to the subterranean ruins of an ancient civilization.

Today, you have just awakened from a series of embarrassing dreams. The expensive suit that Endorai gifted to you lays neatly folded, not at all how you left it. You suppose Argis is to thank for this, too.

By the side of your silver armor, you find something new. A snouted helmet, one that fits your monstrous head much better. Another gift of Endorai's? But she isn't the type to shy away from... anything, much less from giving a gift in person.

The only person that could have done this is Argis, but the silver-haired maid doesn't seem like the type to shy away from things, either.

You make a note in your head to ask about the gift to either of the two when you can.

Today you plan to...
>Get rid of your "meowing when startled" problem. Endorai said she could do it during a chimerization, but you'd rather get rid of it now. It's embarrassing.
>Go to the Adventurer's Guild. Not only have you still not got the reward for those quests you completed, but you also need to see if they can offer you a way into Duke Umveos' expedition. You might also see a quest that catches your attention.
>You're worried about Adalis. How she looked after what Endorai said to her, it stayed with you. Those eyes... Try to find her.
>The entrance to the ruins is in the sewers, and most entrances to them are grated and watched. But if there's anyone that knows a secret entrance, it's a criminal. Ask Chungus if he knows how to get into the sewers.

In the evening you want to...
>Find a trusty smithy and apothecary. You have been delaying this, but if you're going to go ruin-delving it would be a good idea to have a replacement weapon and some medicine on you.
>Go to the Adventurer's Guild. In the evening, when the quests are done, adventurers gather and share stories. You might learn important tips, hear interesting rumors, or just see grown men making a fool of themselves, but you're sure to have a good time.
>Spend time learning to read with Endorai. Endorai says it necessary to do so to learn magic, and you're willing to trust her on it.
>Find Argis. You're pretty sure this helmet is a gift from her. You're not used to getting gifts out of nowhere, but you want to say thank you.

that would be a way to quickly stabilize Basic Beast if we really want to free up that "unstable pattern" slot for some reason, and pick up some stat boosts on the way.
not sure how much the individual specimens change us, though. getting a non-humanoid morphology should wait as long as possible.

It would be nice to fill out the Orcus Squirt and Basic Beasts due to how relatively common they are. We've already made progress into those, so it would easy to fill them out for their benefits.
I believe we to so degree get to chose how the morphology of each procedure affects Zedek, like how most of us chose the cats head over excessive shedding and obvious furry yiff legs. Who knows, the maxed out Orcus and Basic Beast stats might help out for any upcoming fights.

Beyond that, we might need to visit the black smith to see if they could refit for us some better armor, or get our current set enchanted.

The cat head was planned. The meowing, and this whole Endorai punishing the ice cream shebang is the result of the low roll. A crit fail would have been something more extreme.

http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/qstarchive/4582439/#p4589451
Your head has become bestial, much like the one you cut from your kill, the only tinge of humanity left in it are the eyes, now golden. The changed muscles bother you, but only until you stop paying attention to them when...

>"MEOW.” The catlike sound leaves your lungs instead of a surprised shout.
>You notice your body completely covered in fur, not only the head. And shedding.
>You notice you feel like you are standing on your tiptoes and look down to see digitigrade, furry legs.

so we can clearly get larger changes with no choice. Endorai can probably make sure we don't change morphology, though, or at least warn us before procedures that will result in that.

''Four days! Four days to report a quest!'' You are currently being shouted at by a tiny, pink-haired girl. Illya Undi, the receptionist that registered you into the Adventurer's Guild, had walked out from behind the counter as soon as she saw you enter.

''I got chewed out by my boss because I didn't sign them as taken! But no one does that for one-day quests! Because they get completed! I had to clean the bathrooms!'' She's repeatedly shoving a gloved finger into your armored chest.

''I lost vacation days! And everyone laughed at me!'' As they are doing now: everyone from the burliest warrior to the beardiest wizard is cackling about the girl trying to cow a man that's almost two heads taller than her.

Her tirade loses steam as you do nothing more than stare down at her, looming and impassive.

''W-well, d-do you have a-anything to say, sir?'' She swallows saliva as if suddenly realizing the sheer difference in physique between you two.

>After yesterday, you're done with embarrassing public situations. Grab Illya, put her behind the counter, and have her do her damn job.
>Ignore the stupidity. There's another, brown-haired clerk, looking consternated. Ask her about Umveos' expedition and any other interesting quests.
>You recognize one of the laughing voices. It's Bunduqia, the amazonian woman you helped while hunting goblins. Go talk to her.
>''I'm... sorry?'' While this sounds like it's Illya's fault, you're more confused than angry.
>Write-In?

She reminds you of a whimpering puppy, and for a moment you're tempted to rub her head. You dispel the thought with disgust and with it the faint irritation of being reprimanded for something that's not your fault.

''I'm... sorry?'' For a moment, you think of blaming Endorai for keeping you busy, and she did in the chimerization sessions and the date. But it was you who spent his evenings training. And anyway, isn't Illya to blame for not doing her job?

''W-well, sorry isn't enough, sir!'' She puts her hands on her hips, reinvigorated by your passivity. Before you can say anything, someone bellows.

''Buy her flowers, lover boy!''

''The fuck you saying, man? That's old shit!'' Another adventurer cuts in, ''Buy her chocolate! Bitches love chocolate!''

''In my many years of experience, ice cream always works.'' Says a pipe-smoking wizard.

''Bend her over the counter, Beast Slayer!''

Crack! That's the sound your neck makes, from how fast your head turns trying to find the source of the... suggestion. Luckily for them, you don't.

''That will be enough.'' Your voice carries through the Adventurer's Guild, putting an end to the merriment. You are done with embarrassment for today, and if anyone makes any comment that involves your genitals, even tangentially, you're putting them through a window. The adventurers seem to notice this, and slowly quiet down, but not before an old wizard shouts the directions to an ice cream parlor.

''E-eh, u-uhm, e-eh, t-this, I-I'm not...'' You look down to Illya, who has blushed so intensely you're surprised she hasn't fainted. She is gesticulating at random, trying to find anything to say.

''I would like to receive the rewards. Now.''

A minute later, you are placing twenty silver and one gold into a pouch. Turns out that while the first and third quest were standard goblin fare, the second came from a Lord Umveli, and was far better paid.

''A-about what everyone said, you d-don't need to...'' She mutters just as you finish pocketing the money.

''What can you tell me about Duke Umveos' expedition?'' Whatever she was saying gets cut by your question. Her mouth shuts with a plop.

''Only bronze ranks and above can participate.'' She says with a pouty frown.

''And how can I rise in rank?'' Depending on the answer, you might have to look for an alternative way of getting in.

''You'd have to complete enough iron-rank quests to be deemed qualified for a promotion.'' Illya recites, ''Usually fifteen to twenty. More if you repeat the same sort of quests, like only killing goblins.''

And you would have to do that in three days. You could if you neglected sleep and rest. You've lived through worse accompanying the heroes. But it might be a good idea to look for another way unless you want to enter the ruins while exhausted.

''Oooooor,'' A boyish voice cuts through your thoughts. ''He can go on a couple of quests with bronze ranks.''

You look down to see Alfen, the young boy you helped out killing goblins. He looks even shorter out of Bunduqia's arms.

''U-uhm, yes, but...'' Before Illya can say anything, Alfen continues.

''Z here is more than tough enough to take it. If he can blend so many goblins into a fine paste, he doesn't belong with the irons.'' Z?

''Consider it my thanks for helping our asses out with the goblins.'' The boy throws you a beaming smile, ''So, what do you say, are you in? I'll let you choose the quest too!''

No matter what we do let's try to get ourself more magic. Having a cheat code to the universe will always be useful
>>
shower thoughts:

putting on and taking off the amulet is very obvious. I've thought of a couple of designs I'll draw tomorrow to make it more subtle, dependent on how it actually works.

our mouth is in a weird place relative to the glamour. how do we look when we're eating? Endorai did have us eat in a restaurant.

someone's going to inevitably ask:
what's up with the amulet?
why are you working for the Witch of Tharazar?

so we're going to need a big consistent lie for people to draw out of us at the speed of a truth.

my ideas:
we were part of the heroes' party, but had to leave because we contracted a supernatural illness. we were directed to Endorai (by who?) to treat it.

among our symptoms, we have difficulty breathing normal air? the armor and amulet are part of our treatment (and prevent it from spreading? or it's not contagious). this also explains our occasionally odd voice.

our relationship with her is mutually beneficial:
we get treatment, a comfortable home and the opportunity to continue to work and develop as an adventurer despite our sickness.
she gets to study our disease, and gets first pick of any alchemical supplies we gather.
(talk to her later about getting some payment as cover. people know we're gathering valuable supplies and might ask for a cut.)
(alternatively: grumble about her taking everything to pay for what she's using to treat us.)

she and her maid are both very unpredictable people, but pleasant enough and we're learning from them. let it drop that Argis is physically stronger than us?
>>
>>4610913
What if Endorai found us? Maybe she heard us bitching about our situation and decided to treat the 'illness'
>>
>>4610913
amulet could work in too many ways. need more information like
>is there a clasp
>>otherwise, is there an extra long chain to fit around our snout?
>what counts as wearing it? like does it have the same effect if we put it on an arm, or does it do nothing, or does it do something different like replace our hand with a head?

>>4611118
remember that we haven't actually been publicly complaining about a disease. people can figure that out. maybe something like
>we've talked about it specifically with smart people to get help. (didn't want a rumor to get to anyone who'd assume we were contagious and get us lynched)
>Endorai contacted us, probably got tipped off by one of those people.
>she hasn't told us who, and doesn't want us to help anyone figure out.
>informants are secret for a reason, and in this case, whoever it was did us a huge favor, so we're inclined to go along with that.
means we have an excuse not to share names.
>>
>>4610913
Well, I think this runs into the problem that we don't actually know how Zedek met Endorai. That's something we need to establish in the narrative first before we can start lying about it, so that we don't contradict anything. But yes, if it doesn't conflict with any known facts about her, her studying our disease could be a very good cover.

If we're going to publicly acknowledge that we were in the Hero's party, then we might actually be able to use Aliss as our cover. She comes from a city of sages and prophets, maybe she knew someone who knew Endorai and recommended us to her. And it probably doesn't run the risk of getting back to the party, because they're off in some distant land fighting the demon king.

Sorry for the meager update, but these days have been exhausing, and I have very little energy to write.

You are halfway through the road towards Woodhenge forest. The morning sun shines behind you, and the grass around you murmurs with the wind. You take the chance to ponder just what might be the cause of the dissappearances.

From what Alfen shared, Woodhenge is relatively free of monsters, and often visited by foragers. Your first suspicion is a displaced monster, something aggressive that has lost its den and been forced to move into newer pastures. You also consider the possibility of an Unique Monster, it's strange that it would only attack recently, but it could be a quickly-maturing insectoid.

''...Z? Z? Z?!'' Alfen brings you out of your contemplation.

''What is it?''

''I'm bored. Why don't we talk? Like... why didn't you join the Adventurer's Guild sooner? You seem like the type to have been at this for years.'' You hear Bunduqia sigh, the muscular woman massaging the bridge of her nose.

>''It's personal. I'm just happy to be in, now.'' You are not oppossed to a bit of small talk. Take the chance to share stories with the odd duo.
>''If we're going to flap gums, tell me what you think we're hunting.'' Menial conversation is for after the battle.

It's the age old tale of missing updates, feeling bad about it, and avoiding the thread because of being bitch made.

I'm still here, still fucked by uni, and low on energy to write. And kind of dissatisfied with what I do write.

Exams are over next monday, so there's that at least.

You can't rely on outside circumstances to accommodate what you want to do.
It's either write in the present, or consign your quest to an ever-escaping future.
>>
It's time to confirm the obvious. I'm flaking, in a permanent manner.

The main reason is that my lack of planning caught up with me, I had ideas for the plot, but no fucking idea of how to introduce them well, let alone how to make the mechanics scale, or how to make mechanics at all. More reasons include that I had only a shaky idea of the MC's personality, so he ended up as milquetoasty and passive and not very fun to write, and that I shouldn't have put being a hero as an objective, because it made him too good and nice.

I also compromised, aka fucked up, in Endorai's characterization. In the original plans, she was much nastier and evil, but with how heroic Zedek ended up beign, I couldn't find a a way to write her how I wanted.

This left me without a much needed point of conflict, and having to shelve some other characters, such as other human chimeras. Which ended up with me creating filler.

Anyway, writing this quickly became a chore that I did my best to avoid.

So, yeah, quest canceled. But I'm going to post the plans and lore that I already had so this isn't as shitty.

>Player Progression
There were Basic Races, Advanced Races, and Great Races for every type of generic fantasy monster. I played with the idea of having an Ultimate Race or Monster King type thing if you obtained and maxed every Race of a type of monster, but didn't write anything down. I also intended to introduce several tutor characters, to push the MC forward in more traditional techniques. There was also making pact with spirits. The Aradec Dungeon that you were going to enter contained a Lightning Spirit you could have made a pact with. There were some plans for cyborg fuckery too.

>Further Events
I had two events planned after the Dungeon expedition: the Heroes being given a tip you were seen in company of Endorai by a manipulative priest character, who hints that Endorai's probably done something with you, which ends with them searching for you when they go back north to catch a ship. I only had the loosest idea of a scene where Endorai asserts her dominance to Zana.

The other was a elven princess fleeing her homeland after the Seer King Yonath died, and the elves were left without one of their three immortal kings, putting them on the backfoot against the neighborhooring Sepum and the invading demons.

>Lore
>>Demons
You didn't get to see any, so I couldn't find a place to fit this, but demons in this setting are all an extension of Melas' will. Demonization starts by hearing the voice of Melas, and progresses by mutating the affected. The deformed goblin you found was in the beginning stages of this.

Demons are characterized by their unending hatred against all life, destroying even plants. If you had an encounter with a demon and chimerized with its corpse, you would have begun to hear the voice of Melas.
>>
>>4636386
>>Demon King Melas
The soul of the small god whose corpse was used to make the world. By his suffering and impotent rage are the Gods of Music kept amused, and the world in existence. His goal is to destroy the world, that is, the game of the gods, and free himself from his torment. His name is a reference to Omelas.

>>The Gods of Music
The big mystery niggas behind it all, the power behind everything and the makers of the universe. You were suppossed to get hints of their existence during the elf princess quest and onwards. Their motivation is to stave away boredom until the day existence ends, and playing the games of worlds and men is both amusement and reproduction to them. One possible end to the quest was if you hybridized with every Race, you would be the winning piece of this game and get to join them.

>>The Six Living Gods of Doonsidal
In reality, a group of powerful immortals from the age of myth. I didn't plan much with them, other than Aliss is a genetic clone of one of them.

>>Outsiders
A high-tier type of monster I didn't get to introduce. Eldritch abominations, essentially. Created when the song of the Gods of Music jitters, and as their song is existence itself, the results aren't pretty. Their signature ability, that you could get, was to remove cause from effect, essentially pulling a King Crimson, timeskip included.

>>Watchers
Another high-tier monster. These were the eyes of the Gods of Music in this world, and chimerizing with them was the first step to their plotline.

>Characters

>>Endorai
Had no fucking idea what to do with her. Her original, eviler version had a redemption romance thing going on, but eh. She was also much more manipulative. Her original objective wasn't for science either, she wanted to create something powerful enough to fuck Sepum up for letting her husband die.

>>Argis
Is actually a giant mimic and is the enterity of Endorai's mansion. Her reason for liking cats is that they hunt pests and keep her clean. Interactions with her were planned to be some mix of “help me become a real girl” and “what makes a human, human” type shit. Mimics are a combination of Slime and Ghost races.

>>Tutors
They had their own questlines. One was a blood knight that almost killed Aliss and was broken out of prison by Endorai, another was this Sepum student that was going to be introduced, and other was a madman that was another entry into the Gods of Music plotline.

>Saula
Was meant to oppose her mother. Also to serve as an in to Sepum. Personalitywise she was going to be ambitious like her mother, but much more straightforward and less manipulative. If you were romancing Endorai when you met her, she was going to attempt to seduce you to fuck with her mother.

And that's all. I underestimated the time and dedication required to be a QM. If I ever attempt a quest again, I'll probably do an oneshot.
>>
>>4636387
It's okay. It's not okay actually, but at this point I've come to expect this sort of behavior from new qm's, so I'm neither surprised or particularly upset, Just disappointed. At least we got some interesting lore out of all this, I might use some of it in my own writing.
>>
>>4636386
Ah, well. Sorry to hear that, Flakeman. I get it, though, sometimes you come up with a cool idea and then when it comes time to implement you don't know what to do, so you put it off to think about more and it just keeps snowballing. I'm exactly the same. Thanks for running what you did, though, it was definitely an interesting concept. Especially with these notes on your plans. Argis was the mansion, huh? Neat.

Sad to see things go this way, but it was a fun quest while it lasted. Your writing is enjoyable and worldbuilding really creative. Captures that JRPG style really well.

Hopefully if you try again, things go better on the planning front. Thanks for everything so far! All the best.
