The group you were giving this presentation to claps as you sit back down, Coach Freddy giving a nod. “Thank you, Son Peppa, for sharing that with us.”

“Eheh, I guess I’m just glad I got the chance to share it.” You rub the back of your neck humbly. So. Finally managed to meet up with this Alliance Club thing. Not exactly a big group, but certainly one with a lot of unique faces, some you’d only ever really seen in passing during school. Your eyes do however glance over to the clock. That was almost an hour you spent here, sharing some of your experiences and listening to those of others. Did kinda want to meet up with Keli today, to try and work on some tag team skills…

“Would you be up for questions at this time, Peppa?” Coach asks.

“Ah, sure, shouldn’t take too long.” you reply with a sweet smile. “Though just a few for now, still got some training to do later.” A few hands jolt up at once, causing you to laugh softly. You look to the one you saw come up first, belonging to a slightly chubby girl with two-toned hair. “Um, Cal, was it, right? How about you first?”

She nods. “So like… I actually gotta know, how do you handle that kind of thing? You’re able to balance out the martial arts training you do with everything else, even your love life. Where do you find the time to do all of that without burnout? And how does she keep up with ya?”

“Well, I guess part of it is just finding a balance. It’s not always easy, I’ll admit, especially with everything that happened this summer, but I do my best to keep in mind both our needs, apart and as a couple. And… to be honest I guess I’m a little lucky on that last part, Cocoa’s been able to keep up with me ever since I was little. Sometimes it’s me that has to keep up with her.” Okay, that wasn’t too bad. Next one. Let’s see, who was second… ah! You gesture to a blue fox boy in skinny jeans and a tanktop over fishnets. “Umm… Pac, right? What’s your question?”

“I know you’re super tough and everything, being the World Champ, so most won’t try to pick a fight with you… but what might you say to those who aren’t really into martial arts like you, that get picked on and pushed around?”

The air grows just a bit more tense as you see a few other folks flinch. That is a bit of a tough one…

You quietly think over how to respond, and once you’ve got something, you smile and nod. “Okay. That catches the fox boy’s curiosity. “So… not learning to fight, but learning how to get out of fights?”

You nod. “Yeah! In addition, I guess it’d be best to know how to avoid getting into those situations in the first place. While it’s not entirely the same, I have been in situations before where just charging through everything would only get myself or others hurt, situations where the best option is to get out of there and plan a way around things.” You sit back down again. “Of course, these are just my opinions. I’m barely a teen still, so don’t take everything I say as fact.”

“That’s still some good advice, Peppa.” Coach compliments.

“Sadly I think that’s about all the time I have for today.” you tell everyone apologetically, bowing your head. “But if any of you still have questions for me, I can hand out my contact info and answer them later.”

That seems to be agreeable enough with most people there, and with the meeting coming to a close you start sharing your info with everyone. Coach thanks you as you exit the room, “I know it’s a lot to put on someone as young as you are, but all the same I think that was very helpful for a lot of kids in there. So thank you for agreeing to come to one of our meetings.”

“Ah, it was no big… oh, hey, Coach! I’ve got a question of my own: you know plenty about getting people to work together as a team, any maneuvers you think would help training for the tag team tournament next year?”

He rubs his chin contemplatively. “Well… I would guess that since it’s two on two, looking into some Tennis Doubles skills might be useful to ya’. One thing to keep in mind is that communication is key, if you and your partner are able to understand one another, even if just through subtle movements, you’re going to excel. At the same time, if you can disrupt your foes’ communications without dipping into unsportsmanlike behavior, you’ll stay on the advantage. Also, don’t linger in no man’s land; having one of you at the back and one of you covering the front is good, but if either or both of you are stuck in the middle, that puts you at disadvantage.” He looks up for a moment. “Applying that to how the tournament works, I guess that would mean keeping switches and tag-ins to a minimum, less you get disqualified. But, timing it just right can give you the right momentum to overcome your foes’ defenses. I would say… look into the Scorpion technique for inspiration.”

“Scorpion technique?” you repeat.

He nods. “It’s a returning serve that hits the ball from behind your back, like your arm is the tail of a scorpion. It’s useful because it is a feint that is pretty hard to recover from, making it look like you’ve failed to hit the ball, only to snap right back into the game. If you can come up with a move like that, I’m sure you and your partner will have the perfect ace to bring out.”

Huh, that might work! “Ooh, thanks, Coach! And thanks for having me share here, it was fun! When’s the next meeting?”

His face lights up. “Ya thinking on joining the Alliance Club yourself, huh?”

With that finally done, you gather up your things and lock on to Keli’s Ki, teleporting to her. You find her meditating in a forested area on the outskirts of Mifan, hovering slightly off the ground. The silver-haired woman opens her eyes, grinning at you. “You took your sweet time.”

“Heh heh, sorry, the Alliance Club members had a few questions for me. Anyway, I’m ready to begin!”

She stands up, the two of you bumping fists. Okay! How’ll you go about this?

The two of you start off with a bit of normal practice, you having Keli explain the rules of the tag tournament to you since she has the most direct experience of the pair of you. Single elimination per team, a loss is when both members of the team are either knocked out, out of bounds, or are in the ring for more than 15 seconds together, and you can only attack a foe while they’re in the arena proper. The pair of you get a practice ring ready, unique in that it’s an actually circular ring rather than the square one, with two tiers to it, main arena and tag area. Honestly the design of it almost reminds you of a Pokeball. The two of you also agree to work on some methods of non-verbal communication, telepathic or otherwise.

“Okay Peppa, watch the timing!” Keli uses Multi-Form to produce two copies of herself, her original self beside you while the copies head to the other side. You get in the ring and dodge the attacks of the copy Keli, doing so rather easily. “Switch!” the real Keli calls to you, and you back out while she steps in, dodging and countering now. After about half a minute, she contacts you and instructs you to try a simple combo with her telepathically, and tells you to wait for her signal. With her copy attempting to feint her with a punch and go for a leg sweep, Keli forms a sort of lasso with her Ki and catches the copy’s leg. “Combo!” she exclaims, flinging the copy in your direction.

You leap out from the tag area and into the arena, Wind Magic building up around your fist. “Rasenken!” You hit her with an uppercut that sends her flying into the air. Five… six… seven…

The real Keli leaps up and readies both her arms for a hammer blow. “Volleyball Fist! SPIKE!” And that sends the copy out of bounds. “Head out!” she calls to you.

You flip back to the tag area right when you hit 11 seconds in the ring, even landing with style as you do. “How was that?”

Keli gives you a thumb’s up. “Hah! You’re a natural, Peppa! Looks like we might have this in the bag after all. Next up, we’ll start working on some proper combos…”

Okay, you’ve got it! Working with Keli’s Volleyball Fist did well already, so you can work more on that. So you and Keli start practicing, and you get the hang of how this technique works… in that it really does match the name given to it. It’s like playing volleyball with your opponent’s body. The real trick is using just the right amount of force to send them up but not too quickly that you can’t follow. Still, you manage it quite well, and are able to use the Rasenken to put just that extra oomph in it. Keli though can’t quite manage the Rasenken just yet, so she focuses instead on making sure she can keep pace with you for this combo. You both give it one more practice round against her copies, and…

“Volleyball Fist! Service!” Keli shouts out. “Hup!” she knocks her copy into the air.

“Rasenken! SPIKE!” And you knock the copy into the ground, flying back down, you and Keli high-fiving. “Perfect!”

“Heh, I might be the one needing more practice if I ever want to match those spikes you can pull off.”

“Hehehe, well, that’s what this training’s for, right? But now that we’ve got this down, I think we should have an extra thing to work on, something my Coach brought up with me: a Scorpion technique.”

Keli raises an eyebrow and crosses her arms. “A Scorpion technique?”

“Yeah! He mentioned it as a thing in Tennis, being able to feint like you’ve missed the ball, only to hit it from behind when the opponent thinks they’ve won.” You get in a fighting stance, throwing some quick jabs and kicks… then a quick tail strike. Ahhh, hey, maybe… “Keli, tag out! I’ll take on this next copy.” She dashes back as the copy heads in, trying to charge at you. You let her back you up into a corner, and right when she’s about to hit you with a strong roundhouse, you fall back… and smack her leg with your tail, causing her go lose balance! “Keli!”

Bolting towards you and delivering a surprise kick to her copy’s back, Keli knocks her out of the ring! The both of you stand victorious. “Scorpion technique, huh?”

“Scorpion technique!” you cheer.

“Okay, I’ll admit, there might be something to this, kid. Wanna work on it some more?”

“Eh…” She waves her hand a bit. “Worked on it, not really there yet.”

“Understandable, pure power isn’t everything. Still, wouldn’t hurt to have that as another ace in the hole to pull out. Especially if nobody else is aware of how far you can go.” You grin cheekily. “Take it from the Champ, it worked out for me before.”

“Hah, okay Champ. I’ll work on that.” She focuses her Ki, taking in a deep breath as her copies move back to the ring. “Kaio-ken!” her red aura flares up around her. “Raio-ken!” Sparks erupt around her body as a purple hue mixes in with the formerly red aura. “Ready?”

You get back in the stand-by area. “Ready!”

“Let’s do this!”

The two of you try the Volleyball Rasenken combo again, pulling it off perfectly, then you switch with Keli as you take on the remaining copy. This time you channel a bit of Ki through your tail, then letting Magic flow through that. There’s a tingling sensation that travels through your spine, but you quickly get over it and wait until you’re pushed to the edge again. And… “HYA!” you successfully feint like you’re about to get pushed out, only to slash out with your tail, using Wing Magic to unbalance your foe. “Keli!”

“TIMES TEN!” Keli bolts over to you and delivers a palm strike to her copy, which skips across the ground, crashing into a tree hard enough for it to vanish. Keli eases slightly, then flinches. “Ow.”

“A-are you all right? What’s wrong?”

“I’m fine, just, when you put that much of yourself into a copy and it comes back to you suddenly, you do feel the damage it just took. It’s not physical damage, but if you aren’t braced for it, you’ll feel it.” she explains. “…That, having the Kaio-ken active while doing this probably put a bit more strain on me.”

“Ahh… yeah, I can understand that. I’ve had to work a LOT with the Kaio-ken this year to get my endurance with it up.” you comment. “Hrmn… but from what I remember from mom, transforming with the next level, the Raio-Ten, isn’t just as simple as combining the techniques.”

She powers down as the other copy vanishes. “Oh?”

Keli finds the idea questionable. “It’s for a martial arts tournament, not a fashion show. Besides, don’t exactly need to buy anything.”

“It’s not for buying. It’s to get a theme for the both of you. Rather than just shotgun throwing outfits at each other, I can get the two of you to think on how you’d look as a pair by looking over a few articles of clothing, maybe even trying them on.” Your girlfriend looks back, tapping her chin. “Plus, while I’m sure the two of you might have a good idea on it, it wouldn’t hurt to have each other’s exact measurements.”

“Hehe, I barely brought it up when we talked, but you’re totally into this.” you say with a cheeky grin.

“You brought me in because you know I’m an expert at this topic.” she responds and pokes you on the forehead. “Why wouldn’t I be into this?”

You giggle. “Okay, okay, I get it.”

Keli smirks again, turning to you and commenting, “She’s fun. No wonder you’re into her.”

“Girls! Focus!” Cocoa demands, the three of you finally getting to the mall proper. You start to pass by a few clothing stores. As you all look around, Cocoa starts asking a few questions. “Okay so, undersuits, skin-tight or otherwise, yes or no?”

“I mean, if you’re talking about some catsuit thing I’m definitely not just wearing that.” Keli replies. “Even if I have something over it, I like having my skin able to breathe just a bit.”

“Totally understandable. Some bulkier costumes I’ve had to wear for school plays could trap heat like nothing else.” Cocoa then, to your surprise, gets the two of you to the… biking wear section? Huh. “You and Peppa both seem to like having your midriffs open, so stuff like these might work for you.” She shows off biking shorts, about thigh-length, and shirts that would be a bit snug, but look rather flexibly stitched, and don’t reach all the way down.

Keli looks the outfit over. “Might… not actually be a bad fit. Would still be wearing stuff over it.”

Cocoa nods and then quickly turns to you. “Peppa, how about you?”

“These would combine the more standard elements you both have been going through together. It’ll keep a more eastern theme to it, be decently easy to move around in, provide a modest amount of coverage while letting your skin breathe, like you mentioned, Keli.” she explains. “All with the added bonus of looking fashionable while you’re out there kicking butt.”

Keli looks over the articles, slowly nodding. “I can kinda get behind this… what do you think, kid? These in like, red and black or something?”

“Aaaactually.” Cocoa speaks up. “Here’s an idea: try brighter colors. Instead of purples and darker reds, how about whites and pinks and more vibrant reds?”

The silver haired woman raises an eyebrow. “Really? Why? I don’t exactly plan on fighting while looking like a flamingo.”

“Well, consider this: why do you go with darker colors, normally?”

“Contrasts my hair and skin.” she responds, brushing her fingers through her hair. “Plus it’s more my style.”

“Exactly.” she snaps her fingers. “So you keep what’s underneath black, but contrast it with the brighter colors on the exterior. Also: team logo. Yes or no?”

Keli looks towards you. “Team logo?”

Walking through the mall with the two, you all check out some sights as you happily munch on these treats. Ooooh the bubbles are filled with a like… sweet custard thing! It’s like mochi and waffles did a fusion dance~! And the little fruits and drizzle and ice cream all brings it together like the most wonderful waffle cone in the world!~

As you head through the mall, you spot a few screens advertising some upcoming movies. Cocoa goes starry-eyed for one for that Pandora movie, but you… spot one which that Barry Khan guy is in. “Mmnh.” you grumble as you finish off one of the bubble waffles, the one you were holding with your tail moving to your now free hand.

“...Sssso, um, Peppa. You’re still up for seeing it, right?” Cocoa asks. “Pandora?”

You hold up the Hakkero. “I’d like to work a bit more on this Hakkero, but there’s still more that needs to be done. A trip to Annin might be what I need…” You rub your chin contemplatively. “Yeah, okay! We’ll be headed that way, team! While there you’ll do a few things to help her out.”

Cheelai mumbles a little. “What kind of things?”

“Oh, shouldn’t be too much. Organize a few things, maybe punch a noisy ghost or two.” You leap to your feet. “But! You all have been doing pretty good as of late, so next weekend I say you all can take a breather. And once we’re done, how about ice cream afterward?”

“Ice Cream!” Son Para cheers.

“Fiiiiine.” Cheelai agrees.

“Okay! Let’s head off! Cheelai, you’ll be riding Icarus along the way too.”

She stares blankly. “…Y-you’re serious.”

“Completely! Come on people, double time it!”

You hurry everyone out the door and let mom and dad know what you’re up to, the both of them giving you directions and wishing you well and reminding your group to behave themselves. Cheelai is able to… manage, at the very least, riding on Icarus as you lead them all towards the Furnace of Eight Divisions.

Landing on the place it’s located, Mount Five Element, you help Cheelai down and then give Icarus some pats and scritches. “That’s a good boy. Didn’t scare her at all. Whoosagooddragon? You are, yesyouare!”

“Man, what a spooky-looking place, boss.” Don Para comments, looking over the pathway leading up to the gate. He then gulps a little. “…Uhhh, b-boss, were you joking about those ghosts?” he asks, pointing forward.

All of you look forward and spot a spectral figure skulking around the path, letting out a haunting sound. But… you can tell that it’s not actually there. Lacks a Ki signature. Nothing more than an illusion.

“Aw come on you guys! You’re better than that!” you call out. “Shouldn’t be afraid of no ghosts! March through, team! Chop chop!” You clap your hands together for emphasis. “Para Para Bros? Show it your moves! That spook ain’t got nothing on your style!”

Bon Para nods, puffing up his chest. “She’s right, little bro! We’re not gonna fall for a trick like this again! Come on!” The pair march up to the illusive spectre, starting up their dance.

You start walking along with Cheelai, Son Para, and Icarus as they push the ghost back with their dancing. While they do that, you think to contact Annin properly. Y’ know, make sure she knows who’s coming to visit. You try to sense for her Ki… but find it kinda hard at first. It’s not like she’s hiding it, but rather it’s simply not… as detectable. ‘Hey there, Miss Annin? We’re kinda heading in for a bit, I’ve got some questions about the Hakkero and these guys could do with some tasks, if you don’t mind.’ As you do you chant and sing aloud with the brothers. “We’ve got the spirit, yes we do. We’ve got the spirit, how ‘bout you?~”

‘Izumi Mahogany… well, this is an interesting meeting. It has been many years since Acer and Chi-chi last brought you with them for a visit. Yet I have heard much of your exploits as of late. You are the first true Mahou in many generations.’

Woah woah woah wait. Wait. ‘You knew the Mahou of the past?’

She telepathically chuckles at you. ‘I have helped manage the Furnace of Eight Divisions for tens thousands of years, passing along the souls of the departed to judgement by King Yemma. I’d be doing a poor job if I didn’t take some note on the world during my time. Though it would be more accurate to say I knew of them rather than knew them directly… save for a very small few.’

Oh now that’s a whole lot of stuff you just got informed of! ‘Okay so I am kinda here for some info on the Hakkero first and foremost, but I’d definitely want to hear something on this small few of folks you just mentioned. Sounds like quite a story!’ You place your hands behind your neck, grinning. You glance over to Cheelai and Son Para as they just casually stroll forward, Icarus behind you all. ‘Also, got anything these four can do for ya? Y’ know, something that can count as a form of community service or the like.’

‘Very well. I do have some work they could do, but if you wish to learn about Earth’s furnace more, that will require some of your time too.’

‘Hey, I’m good with that. So! Got a story while we head up there?’

Annin’s voice in your head chuckles softly. ‘Very well. Ah, it’s all coming back now. I recall a time where one of Earth’s Mahou, a young woman skilled in Magic and companion to a great hero of the past, Olibu.’

Ah, Olibu, yeah you’ve- WAIT WHAT?! ‘Olibu? THAT Olibu?!’

‘Indeed. Elevia was her name. Strong in spirit and… very outspoken. Why, I recall her being so outspoken that she even got into an argument with a mountain. Not a woman who took being told “no” very well.’

…Why does that sound familiar? ‘Wow, didn’t read many stories about someone like that.’

‘Sadly, few legends survive for so long untouched. But I recall that young woman quite well. Her true talent was her skill in Magic. Elevia had the spark of a Mahou in her, and she searched far and wide to learn how to properly utilize her skills. My encounter with her was… memorable. After overcoming the illusions that ward off those of weaker constitution, I had expected her to come bargaining for a departed soul like so many others had before her. Such was… not the case.’

‘What did she want, then?’

She softly chuckles. ‘She wanted to one-up a demon that made light of her skills. She came to me on the mere rumor that I could give her the edge in a rematch, to prove she wasn’t second-fiddle to a demon.’

The illusion finally vanishes as you all reach the gate, the Para Para bros high-fiving as they declare they’ve busted the “ghost.” Heh.

‘This lady sounds amazing! Why didn’t she get any legends to her name?’

‘Well…’ Annin starts hesitantly. ‘She was also not the easiest person to… agree with. I’d even wager she had more self-pride than that Vegeta fellow does. To this point, she would make a lot of enemies during her time on Earth. She was also quite the… cultural rebel, butting heads with those who were dismissive of her and often ignoring norms when they clashed with her personal philosophy. As the decades turned to centuries, where she didn’t become a sort of… boogeyman to spook children with, she was actively forgotten. Some traces do still remain, though. Legend tells of Olibu’s ability to throw out bolts of Lightning forged by a skilled smith of the heavens. In truth, she was the one to grant him that ability, using her Magic alongside his immense strength.’

“Come on people, don’t keep Annin waiting!” you tell the four, doors opening and all of you traveling down a large cave. ‘Well… guess that makes a bit more sense, but still kinda sucky she got forgotten like that. So, what did you teach her, exactly? And what’d she do to earn it? …Did she teach you anything in return?’

Annin’s voice in your head becomes a bit more nostalgic as she recalls, and she even shares telepathic glimpses into her memories. ‘I worked her for one year under the intense training in Magics, until she could tap into the true power of a Mahou.’ Flashes of various tasks and bits of training course through your mind as she speaks, Annin appearing taller than your mech form as a blonde woman in a very ancient-looking white tunic preforms each strenuous activity. Conjuring various items through Magic, reading through texts with writing you’ve seen in some books, creating something that looks like the precursor to the bansho fan, even delving into a swirling void to retrieve a small… hexagonal… amulet… HEY!

‘That octagon amulet, is that related to the Hakkero?’ you ask quickly.

‘Only distantly. Elevia, like those before her, altered herself to more effectively draw out this power, using a focal point for it. The amulet you see was inspired by it, but it was no Hakkero’ With the amulet affixed to her, the blonde woman’s body became wrapped in Magical light, new cloth and armor and even fanciful ribbon-like details replacing her white tunic. Finally… you see a scene that must be decades later, an aged lady slowly walking towards a surprised Annin, features still unmistakably those of Elevia’s. She hands over the octagonal amulet with a smile on her face, then walks off with naught but a wave. ‘And though I would not quite say she taught me anything intentionally, she helped remind me of why I took up my position on Earth.’

‘Would you mind if I studied it?’ You then head forward a bit. “Okay folks! We’re about to meet her, so I want you all to be on your best behavior for her! Annin is a goddess, after all, and she won’t take kindly to displays of disrespect.”

“Got it boss!” the Para Bros shout out, Son Para even adding in “Boss!” as he salutes you with the others. Cheelai just keeps one hand in her jacket’s pocket as she raises the other and gives you an OK-sigh, while Icarus coos in affirmation.

‘I shall allow this, if you promise to be careful with it. Furthermore, it has not been used in centuries, and though I have kept it in good condition, it is not quite as Magically inclined as it once was.’

‘I promise to be careful with it. You did say it was only distantly based on the Hakkero, so I shouldn’t have to start taking it apart or anything.’ you responds as everyone heads in.

You find Annin seated on a throne, a little plain but also just a little imposing. She motions you all to come forward and stands. “So, you are the visitors that Izumi has tasked herself with chaperoning.” she comments as she looks them over. The Para Bros stand at attention and salute… while Cheelai just gives a little wave before putting her hand back in her jacket’s pocket. “I do have something I can ask of you all.” Annin raises her hand and materializes a large crystal ball, larger than even the one Baba has, which starts to display images inside it. “The Furnace of Eight Divisions you see before you…” Her free hand motions to the large structure behind her, the glow from it illuminating the room. “…helps secure the passage of souls from this world to the next. The fires of the furnace are no ordinary flames, in that case, but flames blessed with a Light that can ward off even the residents of the Demon Realm. The Light it produces further can be infused into certain things if channeled correctly.”

Annin then grows to a massive size, causing your group to all take a step back in astonishment, Icarus getting closer to you, protectively. “…I am not going to get used to this planet for a long time.” Cheelai mumbles under her breath.

The now giant goddess places her hand on the lid of the massive pot that sits atop the furnace, lifting it and… taking some noodles and broth from it, putting it in a bowl so big you could probably use it as a swimming pool. “For example, even foods. In doing so, it helps rejuvenate the body, protect the spirit, focus the mind, heal the soul, and much more.” Annin declares in an echoing, more booming voice than before. She shrinks back down, the bowl with her, and places it on the throne. “The task I have for you four is to gather a certain ingredient that will be served to the overseer of the dead, King Yemma. The Ensenji.” Finally the image in the crystal ball comes into focus, and a tree with curious golden fruits on it comes into view. “You will be stamped to visit this place temporarily and collect one fruit each, then bring them back here. One, and only one. Accomplish this, and you will pass the test. However, if you sample the fruits or take one for yourselves, you will fail, and be forced to redo this. Are my instructions clear?”

Cheelai rubs the back of her head. “Uh… sure, I guess. Collecting fruits. But what do you mean by stamped-?” She gets the answer to her question rather quickly, as the feathers on Annin’s head jolt forward and rapidly but softly tap each of the four’s foreheads, leaving a softly glowing octagonal seal where it touched. The green girl freezes up a bit, weirded out immensely.

“Very well. You will follow this crystal ball to your destination.” the goddess instructs.

“...Focus on the ice cream afterward. Focus on the ice cream afterward. Focus on the ice cream afterward.” Cheelai mumbles to herself in a mantra to keep her sanity.

“Uh, L-Lady Annin, are there any obstacles we should watch out for on our trip?” Don Para asks.

She smiles kindly. “So long as you obey the rules I set out before you, no harm will come to any of you. But should you disobey, ogres will chase you down and force you to hand over what you have stolen. I do hope you all take care now.”

“Focus on the ice cream afterward. Focus on the ice cream afterward…”

They follow the crystal ball, and Annin approaches you and Icarus. “Now, you shall follow me, Izumi. Right this way…”

Also, I wonder if we can make more Hakkero options, one to absorb Shoki and one to absorb Genki. The Shoki one would be blue, and the influx of Shoki should give Izumi more time to think and react, faster than she normally one. And the Genki one would be red, and the influx of Shoki should supercharge Izumi like the Kaio-ken but from an external source instead of embiggening her own ki reserves.

Nothing prevents vehicles from working in the afterlife, several vehicles are already in use. Icarus' wings are no longer tiny. We'll see about the Hakkero options.

Annin brings you into a small but decorated chamber, with small trinkets and treasures you’ve only ever seen in history books all each neatly arranged and cared for. Icarus sits outside the chamber, but pokes his head in and watches the two of you curiously. Bringing you to a small box, Annin opens it and shows you the octagon amulet. “As I had said before, this has not been used in centuries. It lacks most of the power it once possessed, and now merely serves as a reminder of a…” She looks down at it and smiles softly. “A friend long gone.”

Even so, though, you can find this… very faint shimmer to it. There is a bit of Magic still left in the amulet. You also get a closer look and see that it’s designed with little butterflies and flowers. That’s kinda cute. Taking out the Hakkero you made, you start to compare the two. There… does seem to be something a little different, actually. Not just what lingers there, but… like there’s something flowing through it. Huh.

You let out a very tiny bit of Magic through each object using your Ki, and while the Hakkero you made has about the same reaction, there’s a clearly stronger one through the amulet. There’s… even a very barely audible tune that rings through your ears. Though you also realize it probably can’t handle more than that. “Lady Annin, you said this was distantly related to the Furnace of Eight Divisions. How exactly does it work?”

“Energy is channeled through it and refined, meant to flow into the body and better bring out energies. Like the Furnace, it operates by channeling forms of energy, spirit, Ki, Magic, what have you through it, much like how the Furnace channels souls from this world to the next.” She takes it back and places it back where she took it from. “Even the living energies of the planet are subtly drawn through it in a very minuscule amount.”

Huh. Now that’s a curious way to put it. “Say, are the other Mahou you knew related to some of the places I’ve been to? Like the ruins down south, where the Magical Knights guarded? What of Pharaoh Totenhotep, were Mahou ever involved with him? Were you ever in contact with them?”

She gives you a nostalgic look. “I did not meet most of those specifically, but I did know of them. I do believe a couple Mahou were from the civilization Totenhotep was from, though if memory serves correct they were outcasts who fought against the ruling dynasties when they grew corrupt. I may still have something from a Magic Knight though…”

“How about the ones you did meet, can you tell me about them?” you ask, still looking over your Hakkero, pondering the different reactions between the two.

“Hmm… ah, I think I remember one now. Yes, it was about… 500 years ago? 450? A young lady, more a girl barely in her teens, who fought against some notorious vampires and dark witches of the time alongside a few allies. She had wild hair and was cute as a button. She made companions with a few special animals who she worked with, using her abilities as a Mahou to empower them to drive out her foes.” Annin recollects, finding a cross-shaped trinket. “She was notable because she came not to bargain with me for a soul, but to ensure that one actually passed on, unable to return. A notorious vampire that bargained with demonic powers to return to the world on the first blood moon since his previous defeat. She was working with the world’s greatest vampire hunter at the time, and even another vampire… ah yes, Fangs was his name.”

Wait what? “Fangs? One of Baba’s gang?” you question.

“Yes, the very same. The vampire hunter worked to break the curse that was keeping the lord returning, while the Mahou forced the fiend to pass from this world to the next. Though, as part of his demonic pact, he was pulled not into the Demon Realm, where he remains, suffering hundreds of years of torment at the hands of his former benefactors.”

“So there’s a connection between the Furnace and even the Demon Realm…” you think aloud. “Hey, Lady Annin, do different worlds have different kinds of Hakkero?”

She nods. “Yes. Each one must connect to the afterlife through a different location in the broader universe, tying the world they reside on with the beyond.”

“And… that means some are connected to the Demon Realm, which is why you have ways to keep the Demons from crossing over through them… hey, would mind of I could take a sample, or like, study them somehow?”

Annin places the cross back down and nods. “But I must warn you, without the Bansho Fan it will be perilous to approach the flames of the Furnace.”

“I’d like to use my mech form, the Magic Knight power I was able to achieve through helping the Magic Knights down south, to check out the flames inside the Furnace.” You rub the back of your neck. “…Though I wouldn’t mind you keeping watch to make sure I don’t go in over my head and stuff. Plus, if I do, I promise I’ll use the Bansho Fan instead.”

Quite amused by your suggestion, Annin agrees with a nod and leads you out. “You show quite a proactive nature, little Izumi. Though I can say you are very much your parents’ child.” She giggles softly, growing in size once more. As you bring out the crystal and transform again, now coming up to… about her kneecap, honestly, she lifts the pot from the Furnace. “I shall keep watch over you while you are in there. Do keep yourself on-guard, though. Recall what the flames are for, and what things still try to pass through.”

You pat Icarus on the head with your mech, the dragon cooing happily and sitting beside Annin, then give the goddess a thumb’s up. “I’ll be back soon!” And so, you head inside. The flames wash over your mech, and while you do get indicators and heat warnings, doesn’t look like it’s doing any damage to it just yet. And more importantly, you can’t really feel any of the heat. Nice! It’s also keeping you from getting blinded by the intense light, thankfully.

Walking around, you notice stronger walls of flame that seem to congregate around certain areas. There are also what look like pools of… lava? You move a bit closer. Huh. Molten, bubbling metal. Might wanna avoid those just to be on the safe side. Kinda… getting flashbacks to your match against 19 in the Tournament. Hah, that was fun. Should hang out with her agai- There’s a splash in one of the pools of metal. Breaching the surface of one of them, you see a flaming figure emerge, and… you sense a kinda vile Ki residing in it. Not terribly strong, but definitely that of a demon.

“Dodododo~” it… he…? …s-sings? “Evil Ducky, you’re the one~” You see him… scrubbing with the liquid metal. There’s a tiny horned duckling toy floating beside him. “You make bath time lots of-” He stops as he hears you take a step back. You and the flaming figure stare silently for a moment… before he yells out, “AAIIIEEEE! PEEERRRRVVVEERRRTT!”
