Space, the final frontier.

When the first hyperdrives were developed by the Bogdanoff & Bogdanoff Megacorporation in the mid 22nd century, the first wave of extrasolar colonization soon began. Besides the great expeditions supported by nation-states or corporations, several smaller, free expeditions set out over the years to found new nations. Among them, one had settled in the Eterani star system and founded what over time would become the Extrasolar Free State, a nation that today encompasses 10 colonized planets and a large sector of space to the galactic east of the Solar system. The EFS, with its longterm focus on growth and expansion, has been exploding in population and territory over the past decades of relative peace and prosperity, even as mankind as a whole remains divided, presently split in two blocs - one being around the Eurasian Alliance, controlling most of the human population and much of its territory and the other being our own Alliance of Extrasolar States. Some could say that these two blocs are in a Cold War at present even.
Alien civilizations beyond human space have been known for decades, but only relatively recently has trade and travel increased to the point where cultural and technological exchange is regular. It is becoming evident that alien forces are also influencing human affairs in other ways, as the recent terrorist attack in Delta Pavonis has shown us. Even as mankind's technological advance has made interstellar travel cheaper and faster than ever, we have defeated disease and created artificial intelligence and virtual reality and in some places experiment even more with bending the laws of the universe to our will, war and intrigue remain as companions to our present history, well into the 23rd century.

How it's played:
The collective of players votes on the primary actions that the civilization as a whole takes every turn and during events, battles and so on. Individual players can make factions which can be anything from corporations through religious orders and political parties to research groups and sports organizations. Either as an alternative to a faction or as part of it, a player can make characters too. Factions and characters can pursue their own agendas within the civilization as a whole and influence it and the world beyond it one way or another.

Improvment of police and counter terrorism

With the rising of our population and new urban centers is only natural that we finally take the police and the counter terrorism to standard levels of other star nations. Law and security will be given properly around all of the EFS.

(Nationwide)

Expand the police and ensure it has :

- More unites of riot
- more patrols
- specialized sub police departments (forensis and so on)
- Squads for crackdowns on crime (like Swat teams)
- More detectives, investigators and observers
- Expanded infrastructure
- More vehicles (air/land/sea) and robots/drones
- some shuttles for collaborate with the navy on security

Counter-terrorism should be additionaly expanded, given more resources and men, specialists, structures and ensure it s nation wide in all our solar systems.

Space Pyramids
Our nation was founded by daring frontier settlers, it is our sacred duty to continue expanding, and our own ancient history provides us with a blueprint to follow.
We will construct a new brand of colony ships, titanic vessels in the shape of pyramids. They will be able to take tens, if not hundreds of thousands of people with them, floating cities journeying into the great void in search of Eden.
These super colony ships, in addition to all the features we expect of colony ships, will also be quite capable of defending themselves. Some models will have battery after battery of missiles, others will have single giant lasercannons. And all of them will have hangars capable of sending forth swarms of fighter crafts.
The shape of a pyramid, in addition to being easy on the eye, will also be most beneficial to potential first contact with less evolved species. At the mere sight of our grand vessels, the primitives are sure to prostrate themselves and worship our colonists as gods, in due time constructing pyramids of their own where they can bear forth offerings of gold and other precious metals to our envoys.

Also, instant city upon upon landing. How cool is that

The budgeting of the police and specialized law enforcement is currently being discussed - whilst it is easy to agree that our boys in blue need to be better prepared, words alone won't do that, they'll need more funding too. In our early days we had sheriffs and deputies, whilst later on we organized a more proper districted police force, with sheriffs remaining in use in more rural areas. This has served us adequately and we have maintained a small specialized Counterterror force for decades now.

The SCTF is seeing its budget of 5 Million being tripled to 15 right now to ensure they have a presence on all planets - this is a small enough increase in the large monetary pool that it has seen no opposition. Two questions however remain before us now.

1.The first is the matter of police funding. Our budget currently has us spending one F₵ Million per million residents of the nation on our national police force. In terms of quality, our law enforcement can be described as average, there is no rampant crime on our streets generally.
A.Make a solid one-time investment into acquiring new equipment and facilities (100M) for law enforcement, then continue with our current budgeting strategy
B.Double the yearly budget of the police, allowing them to sustain a higher level of quality over time
C.Do both - an expansion now for our plan to take off and a doubling of their budget so they can maintain a high quality for the future and not require another bailout
D.A different strategy, proposed by some in the Assembly - let every planet set up a local police force funded by local taxes. The national forces will thus be able to focus on more serious matters and specialize more with the same budget

2.Some high-ranking representatives of our law enforcement have said that their effectiveness is limited by politics, their hands are tied far too often in what they can do due to the laws and judicial practice of our nation, which heavily favor civil liberty. The police have said that more than once they've been unable to protect citizens and uphold order due to that and that some officers are at times too concerned over potential backlash or other negative consequences to undertake decisive action against lawbreakers. This affects both the enforcement of law on the street and in the context of surveillance, in relation to organized crime and terrorism. They have asked for an expansion of their authority.

A.The civil liberties of our people are inalienable and shall not be infringed upon. Law enforcement will continue to act within its current limitations.
B.Give them some slight concessions, try to find the most reasonable path that would face the lest amount of public backlash whilst still expanding the abilities of our police.
C.The security of our state is paramount in these times. Expand the powers of law enforcement across the board - it is for the common good.
You may also give alternative proposals. Vote on both subtopics.

There has been some grumbling among the libertarian and minarchist segments of the population - largely American expats - about the news in regards to the expansion of police powers, but you've made it subtle enough that the majority of the populace thinks little of it. Still, this has led to the formation of a political coalition in the National Assembly, the Liberty Bell Caucus, which advocates for more civil liberties and local autonomy. Though a minority both in the Assembly and as a segment of the population standing behind them, the LBC is energized and has begun proselytizing.
With the new budget, law enforcement has begun expansion in its numbers and inventory now, which will take some time to catch up to what we're hoping for.

There has been interest in the advancement of mining technology, but that too could be split into several paths.

Choose one

A.Improve planetary mining - if we can implement methods of deep core mining, we would be able to access previously untapped rich deposits on the planets we already occupy, opening up more jobs for miners and making more resources available with a simpler supply chain, with no need for interplanetary transport to reach metallurgy plants
B.Improved space mining - autonomous mining drones are known to us, but not so widely implemented. If we develop new, better modules and systems for their control and work on spreading their use across our nation we will have a decided advantage in the exploitation of space under our control, bringing us to a Federation-like standard
C.Attempt neutronium research - "Neutronian materials" are considered to be an exotic brand of research, being relatively unknown to the wider scientific branch. Apparently, this research requires rare elements found in few places in the galaxy, yet can yield a highly resistant material far stronger than composites, ceramo-metals or plasteel materials used in advanced construction within our nation. There is no guarantee of (equick) success if we pursue this path now, however.

Gibson Vow with an entourage of assistants come into the council chambers. The assistants set up multiple holographic images displaying his advanced ship, ruins, and the raw deluxe neutronium.

"Now gentlemen, I have personally been conducting research of a 20,000 yrs old race who used to have great influence in the galaxy, advanced in many spectrums one of them being neutronium technology. Thanks to my research I have been able to obtain this rare resource and created this lovely ship. With that said, I will release all of my findings related to uncovering the truth of this fascinating technology. To help with our research I will also be willing to disassemble non crucial parts of my ship so we are able to thoroughly examine neutronium.
I have only have a few theories with how we might be able to collect neutronium. One theory is simplest compared to the others which is we blow up a neutron star by making it unstable enough to detonate, it will be similar with causing a supernova at least. A second theory is lifting the resource from the equator by creating a strong enough gravity projector that can oppose the gravity of a neutron star. The last one is perhaps feeding it enough mass to a neutron star that is spinning fast enough that it'll break itself apart over time.

This is all the information I have for you, thank you."

After his speech Gibson Vow looks towards his assistants, signaling them to begin handing over personal data pads with all of the information regarding neurtonium technology.
>>
>>4530332
"I recall you mentioning this Star lifting several years ago. What would be required for such a process?"
>>
>>4530332
**The last theory is the least probable, but it's were we feed it enough mass into an already extremely fast spinning neutron star that it'll make it unstable and break itself off.**
>>
With the neutronian research selected as our goal, we once more have some choices to make. There is one known neutron star on the edge of our space, Cigny-881F, between Ezepean and Gagarskaya.

A.Try to blow it up
B.Feed it mass
C.Try the gravity projector idea
D.Just study Vow's available materials and further see what we can do without touching any neutron stars

A Committee on Key Research is formed within the National Assembly, its members being the only ones outside of the Ministry of R&D privy to information pertaining to this research, as its strategic value is deemed to be high. Our best scientists are assembled and an additional budget granted for this project, dubbed "Lightswitch".
To begin with, material examination is conducted on the neutronium plating of the science ship the Vows have built, as well as on fragments of ancient alien structures that have been said to contain such materials. The alien materials are not the exact same as the ones we find on the ship - the former are sturdier, containing a slightly different makeup and structure. The two forms are thus dubbed "Ancient neutronium" and "Gibson's Neutronium". In both cases it is an alloy, with rare volatile elements forming up to several percent of the total mass. These are elements which are extremely hard to find naturally. Weeks and months are spent exploring the properties of both neutronia, which does lead to some material being lost in the process.
It was a stubborn month and a half of studies that led to a lot of heads hitting walls in search of truth. Chief researcher Satoshi Hirota did at one point remember hearing about something in the halls of the ministry and thus made a few calls back and forth, eventually reaching Gibson Vow's office.
"Hmm, we have no choice. Miss Campbell, get Pennysworth on the line now."
Digging into the deepest of crevices of knowledge, some way forward was found. By building off previous research conducted on the mysteries of the exotic stars within our territory, something which had been kept in the Ministry's files under lock and key, as electronic systems were deemed too vulnerable . According to our research, Eterani and all of the Ghoul Stars have a higher than average content of exactly the materials we might need. These materials are contained within the cores of these stars, however, something we have no easy way of accessing - except through a neutronian-shielded vessel. One we currently possess. It is hypothesized that it could venture into a star and survive. We could attempt to equip it with experimental mining gear to harvest gasses from a star's core. It'll require extra radiation shielding, the best we can possibly produce, in order to possibly survive and it would be cut off from communiciation with the outside whilst inside the star. We hope that by gathering more of this material we can create more of Gibson's neutronium at the very least and thus have more chances of advancing in this field.
This will put the sole vessel capable of such a feat, along with its crew, at risk. It is hypothesized that a warmer star would have a greater chance of containing more of these rare materials, but also be more dangerous to enter.

The William star is selected as an optimal candidate - with no settlements in its system and a presence of volatiles found on the ice planet Boyne, it is believed to be a fitting candidate that combines a lower size, temperature, gravity and possibility of valuable finds.

Our researchers now work on equipping the ship to have a strong enough engine to contend with the gravitational pull of the star, radiation shielding to protect the crew and actual mining equipment to get the gasses we need.

This seems like the best plan possible so far. Now we work and pray.

A month of work on the ship followed. A handpicked crew of just four was specially trained and assembled. Space on the vessel would be extremely limited and everything had to be optimized for the operation to have a chance.

On the 13th of December, 2284, the frigate-sized neutronian vessel "Aquia" launched from the carrier Churchill which had been housing it, as the former had its FTL drive stripped to make room for other equipment - it wouldn't work within William's gravitational field anyway.
At 1300 Selestine time, the crew sent its last message out:
"Command, we are activating full shielding and shutting off comm systems, entering the inner command module of the ship. Divine Shadow guide us."

And so, the observers onboard the Churchill - which had withdrawn to a presumably safe location on the edge of the system, ready to launch its hyperdrive for an emergency jump at any moment - they waited. Hours passed with no way of knowing what was going on. Back in Etar City, the people were eating their dinner by now. They were going to sleep or engaging in their prefered night time activities. It was a Futureball night actually, so many would be staying up to watch. The carrier's onboard FTL comm beacon was activated and a few among its crew had even turned on the sports channels, but most were too affixed on the ship's primary monitors. Around midnight, scanners could detect motion once more and cheers went out across the bridge. The Aquila had just exited the star successfully, on the opposite end from where it had entered.

Comm channels were opened up immediately No reply to outgoing signals from the Churchill - our explorers were likely still too close to the star for their comms to work. Or maybe they were broken? The little dot on the scanner display was maintaining its course, however - just straight ahead. After several more calls being left unanswered, angst returned among the observers on the carrier. Its course was set, a day's travel to rendezvous with the frigate.
>>
>>4530470
Cont.

Even as the carrier pulled up in visual range by the frigate, it was not stopping or changing its course. Something had gone terribly wrong. The officers on board were thinking of ways to bring it in. Boarding pods couldn't break through its hull. If a shot did manage to pierce the armor it would just be damaging the ship further. Towing boats and drone fighters - that was the way. The drones made precise, guided strikes upon the ship's thrusters to gently disable them. The boats then grabbed onto the Aquila and shifted its course on towards the bay of the Churchill safely.

What lay inside was a tragic sight. Most of the ship's systems had been completely fried. The canisters meant to hold the harvested gas were still in place. So was the crew - their ashes still in the command module. Further examination showed that with their last efforts, they had ensured that the engine would keep running and thrust would be maintained to guide the ship to exit the star mostly intact.

A message had been left, carved by laser beam into a wall.
"DO NOT STOP. GOODBYE."

The good news is that the Aquila can be repaired, as its hull had actually withstood the star's crushing forces somehow, but everything on the inside has to be changed. it's back to the lab for the scientists working on Project Lightswitch. Most now believe that with our current level of technology we simply can not hope to obtain what these mythical ancients had - it remains alien knowledge to us.

In Space News today:
Civil unrest rages across the Pavonid union. Lesser terror attacks have followed in the wake of the Congress bombing of '83 and as a result the government has cracked down on civil liberties amid what were already rising tensions, leading to even more riots and small-scale rebellions. Mercenary groups have been contracted to help keep the peace, leading some to believe the government does not trust its own military and law enforcement now.

In accordance with the National Assembly's decision, the Solar Marshall has dispatched three colonial infantry regiments with attached APCs and IFVs, a unit of Freedombots and a Hellfire mech company to Delta Pavonis, escorted by a small naval force. Similar detachments have been sent by the ICS and UCA. The response on planet Caladan has been somewhat negative as the protesters and rioters now claim that the government has sold them out to foreign nations, relinquishing their sovereignty. A government in opposition has been declared in June this year, but the situation has yet to fully escalate to a state of civil war as the added military presence has caused some rioters to back down instead. The legitimate government assures us that everything will be under control by the end of the year.

Updated map of human space. You may notice some new names around - those are various minor powers, free colonies, the descriptions of which you can find in the Discord server's fluff room. Many are player-created in fact, admitted into canon by yours truly because I thought that'd be cool.

A product of decades of planning and lobbying, the Army Expansion Plan will see the ranks of our military reformed and its numbers expanded. Presently we maintain a relatively small, but excellently drilled and well equipped force of 10 infantry and 2 marine regiments, along with several other smaller units. Regiments number 1000 fighting personnel typically.
The points within this proposed plan would see an increase in quality (which has largely already been achieved with our current army) but more importantly - in quantity. The aim being for us to be able to field multiple divisions rather than regiments.
A division would typically have numbers of about ten thousand - that is to say, our current army could be reformed into a single division. We also have two regiments of marines, also a thousand each and also high-quality overall.

The main question that must be resolved is that of numbers and budgeting.
The current plan foresees the following as the strength of one army division:

"A division will be made of 4 parts, this are:

Core (Other than usual infantry, the Core will have even some infantry groups with specialization : scouts, heavy infantry, medics, engineers and weapons specialists. As well support vehicles and robotic units) :
- 10000 men
- 3000 light bots 1000 heavy bots. 50 packs of small air drones (30 drones in each group).
- 30 Support Vehicle groups (10 each)

Armour
- 20 Homesteader APC groups (10 each)
- 10 battle tank groups (10 each)
- 10 Hellfire mech groups (10 each)
- 5 heavy tank groups (5 each)

Artillery
- 10 Artillery groups (5 each)

Air (dropships and wings)
- 30 dropships groups (10 each)
- 10 wings of Red Earls (10 each)
- 5 wings of Black Princes (5 each) "

The cost of raising a single such division would be 100 Million F₵. Yearly maintenance would amount to 20 Million. Furthermore, because has volunteer enrollment, it will take some time for recruits to fill in the ranks and undergo training and receive their necessary equipment.

Now, what the National Assembly must decide is the following: How many divisions do you wish to have in total and how quickly do you want that to happen?
>>
>>4531666
Raise 3 more divisions over a period of 2 years to test the free states ability to build up its land forces with this new system.

A budget of 300,000,000 is earmarked for the army expansion. The existing, experienced troops and officers are divided up among the projected four divisions so that each can have experienced older soldiers, NCOs and officers to pass on experience. Recruitment begins, with advertisement campaigns across the nation. With a high degree of public morale and trust in the government, there's plenty of manpower to pick from and so the recruitment offices are busy day and night, whilst trains, trucks and shuttles soon begin ferrying men from gathering locations in cities and towns to training grounds across the nation. The great work begins of turning boys into men, whilst the arms industry begins working in full gear to fill the needs of the government. The moderate expansion plan has seen some minor criticism from the Liberty Bell Caucus, but it has not become anything too widespread for now.
Speaking of which, the situation on Caladan seems to have largely calmed down. The Pavonid Union has thanked us for the aid provided as its government prepares for elections in the coming months.

The Migration centre, in conjunction with the Minister for Culture, shall begin a campaign to bring people from mostly urban centres of earth to our own planets.
We shall advertise farms, jobs and a higher standard of living and prosperity than that of what they would normally be used to.
Everything from electric billboards to box advertising shall be bought in order to bring people over.
A programme shall also be set up to teach people necessary skills, from farming, to mechanics and to mining, so that even the unskilled may be tempted to come to the Free State.
We shall also construct more Colony ships (we reccomend 3) in order to help ferry these people to and fro the different planets.

We've invested greatly in even more growth in our nation, its expansion assured. The Migration Ministry is hopeful that the training program will offset the troubles that come with an even larger inflow of migrants than what we're already dealing with.

In Space News, American colonies in the Crocket system were attacked by Drazerii raiders. Their numbers were few and were repelled by the local defense forces successfully, though the americans suffered some casualties. This has been the first open attack made by aliens on human space in many years.

On Delta Pavonis order is fully restored and a peaceful transfer of power has seen the old Centrist party greatly diminish, with its leading role overtaken by the Liberty Party, with the Communards as a close second. To form a coalition government, the Liberty party aligned itself with the previously fringe New Awakening Party, a movement calling for a "Spiritual revival" in the "Decayed system of yore".

There is a collective desire for a strike back against the alien menace and our diplomatic corps along with representatives of the military are already in talks with the rest of the Human Alliance. It's looking like there's an overall enthusiasm for it after a lengthy period of peace and advancement in human space and the news that the americans have managed to beat a Drazerii force. This punitive strike could be launched as early as October this year or we could take our time to better prepare, including the building of new ships.

A.We should strike as soon as possible, to make it known we are not to be messed with!
B.At least a bit of preparation is in order (Launch towards the year's end, enough time for some smaller additions to the fleet)
C.We must assemble a grand armada for this venture, let our strength be known! Take a longer amount of time to prepare (You may build as much as you want, the attack will begin once the fleet is up to full strength)

Take into measure what you have available at the moment in the Fleet and Military tabs of the google docs. Our army regiments are at half-strength at the moment, for instance.
Speaking of which, something worth mentioning is a gift sent from Esterpels - designs and examples of working Swarmer-type missile launchers, along with improved programs for missile navigation, courtesy of the work of the Black Fleet's honored "Guest" Dr Orstadok. The programs can be installed quickly and easily into our existing systems to improve the guidance systems of missiles; Swarmer missiles already utilize them and are designed to be able to overwhelm point-defense systems on ships or stations.

Vote on how soon you want to launch the attack and if you'll be doing any prep, what it should be (Or if you don't want to go into details, just set aside a budget for it and the Admiralty will do the rest).

C.We must assemble a grand armada for this venture, let our strength be known! Take a longer amount of time to prepare (You may build as much as you want, the attack will begin once the fleet is up to full strength)

This will be the first true military expedition outside the Human sphere against hostile alien forces. It must be ready for what we will meet in combat and be able to sustain itself so far from home.
To they end I suggest we focus on building warships which will be able to Counter Drazenii armaments and equipment. We should also consider expanding the number of ships in our logistics Corp given how far away from human civilization this expedition may take us. We can’t count on the drazenii to leave us anything to forage.
>>
>>4534245
In order to have some assessment of our enemy, we consult our databases and those of our allies.
We ourselves have had no experience in fighting Drazerii in space. From what our allies tell us, the preferred tactic of these aliens is a rapid, close quarters assault. Their ships tend to be sturdy and equipped primarily with kinetic weapons. Boarding attacks, whenever possible, are widely employed.

Collins Dreadnought

The largest ship built by the Free State to date, the Dreadnought shall be a major project for our scientists and engineers to complete.
In designs, it is an impressively large mobile "Siege" ship, equipped with two Massive MAV Cannons, powered by a core and capable of leveling entire cities when fully charged. Such technology is not yet available to us so we shall dedicate time to researching it.
The ship will also host a series of smaller Blue Laser battery's and includes a command centre, point defence crew quarters and a massive reactor required for powering the MAV cannons.
The second great innovation on the ship will be in its engines and general mobility, with the intention being that in spite of its size the Ships speed is to be remarkable at sub light.

The costs of this entire venture are estimate to be around three and a half billion of our currency, the single largest spending order ever made by the EFS. The Liberty Bell Caucus protests this both in the Assembly and outside, but enough of the public is itching for a fight that they believe we'll win, this ball won't stop rolling so easily.

Factories across our nation are working around the clock as money changes hands rapidly - overtime is paid so that more products can be rushed out in time to fill the government contracts, so many ships must be built that we've even had to outsource the production of some parts to some allied nations. Shipyards both planetary and orbital are constantly building more and more, facilities are temporarily expanded and new workers are hired. This massive spending has lit a fire under our economy's collective behind, injecting a massive amount of money into the system that has caused a spurt of growth.

All the human nations are now building up their arsenals. It'll take at least a year for our own buildup to be completed - the markets are shaken up greatly by this massive mobilization of the war industry as the suppliers of metals and producers of equipment are raking in the cash, whilst navy and army volunteers are enlisting en masse to fill in the many, many open positions.

March 21st, 2287, the Black Fleet leaves the edges of human space on a coreward course.
In April, on a refueling stop in some system along the way they see signs of previous temporary habitation and recent presence in the form of space waste and dug-out asteroids. This is no longer wild space.
May 25th, location - somewhere on the edge of Drazerii space. Signatures within this inhabited system do not match those of the Drazerii and thus it is selected as the first target for a raid. One single habitable planet in the system with a small space station in orbit - prime target. The fleet approaches and is in engagement range with the station when another fleet warps into the system, several light seconds away - at a very long distance engagement range at which most weapons systems are uneffective. The alien fleet is en route to the planet, a cold world enveloped in snow or ice across most, but not all of its surface. Contact with them is almost certain and so the Black Admiral decides to engage. The aliens number 30 ships, most of them being identified as roughly equal to our destroyers in size. There is no certainty over whether they know of the Fleet's presence yet as the locals have not been engaged yet.

Propose battle tactics first, then we'll get on to rolls.

If we are on the opposite part of the planet, the alien station shouldn t be able to target us.

"Perhaps an addendum, but enter into the dark side of the moon, powering down as much as feasibly possible to minimize sensor signature of the fleet. We shall observe this fleet. If they are defenders of this planet we shall give them every opportunity to rest, refuel and leave. If they stay longer for retrofitting or seem to be making themselves comfortable we can simply attack them while they are least prepared. Finally, if they are raiders like ourselves we shall allow them to collect all of the loot from the world for us before striking at them while they are fat from spoils, then continuing onward."

Maintaining its close order formation so as to benefit from the stelath field, the Black Fleet repositions itself to align with the dark side of the moon, deploying its stealth-purpose ships on the far wings, outside the field's protection, where they can observe and scan the alien force. As the hours pass, more things become clear to us: These are not invaders and the group is not an entirely military one - it would appear to be an armed supply group, with about half of the vessels being transports with few armaments on them. They approach the station and either dock with it or begin exchanging shuttles, some of them going to the planetary surface.

Readings on the vessels themselves indicate they all possess at least some shielding. Armaments vary, but by all accounts this is not an attack force as it lacks any prominently large weaponry that would be of use in long distance fighting - point-defense systems, lasers and mass driver weaponry can be identified.
.....
ALERT - Judging by the movements of the alien force and some strange readings we're getting, our presence is no longer a complete secret. We can not be sure if they have spotted our entire fleet or just the two recon ships, however - only the latter have gotten the strange readings. Analyzing these readings through our computers brings up Tacitus' assessment that this is must be some navigational ranging on the locals' behalf - perhaps they managed to pick up on some of our own signals.

"Today we strike as sharks of the cosmic seas, men! Full ahead together, we will take bit at their legs and then have our feast!" the Black Admiral barks to his officers.

Full power is given to the sublight engines and a straight ahead. The fleet must keep in a tight formation to all benefit from the field, but this is a risky maneuver - if the enemy knows their position, they are easier targets if they stay close together, for maneuverability is more valuable than shields and armor in space. Whether they managed to see through our stealth field or simply made an educated guess, it's hard to say, but the better armed of the alien ships opened fire soon enough - firstly just in the general direction of our force, but gradually bringing their salvos closer and closer before finally having hits that clearly register as having hit something. Our shields hold against the first shots, but soon the frigate "Ulster" takes three shots up front in quick succession - the first breaking its shielding, the second denting armor and damaging onboard systems and the third breaking through and causing crippling damage, along with crew losses. The nearby "Derby" takes a shot as well, its shields broken. In a panic, the captain orders that all its missiles be fired. Swarms of small EMP missiles emerge and fly towards the closest enemy - some are shot down, but perhaps half manage to make contact and explode. A third of the other frigate captains fire their own missiles as well, but there is a problem. The enemy is not yet engulfed in the field - the missiles detonate, but merely produce an explosive effect as the crystals within are not reacting. Two enemy vessels are damaged, but not destroyed, whilst one of our frigates is crippled, three have their shields down and one has taken minor hull damage as well. Thankfully, we are now closing in, almost at close range.

"Keep your accursed eyes open and on those monitors, you bastards! Fire those missiles only when in range! Now listen well - they know where we are now, so spread out. Let the Kraken swallow them whole down and bring them to Davy Jones' locker!"

At that command, the tight formation is dispersed. The ships of the Black Fleet disperse in all directions, like an octopus spreading its tentacles out, making it harder for the enemy to target us as we are not clustered together, whilst they still remain relatively tightly formed up around the station, though the combat vessels have taken to the front with the transports staying back. Laser batteries from the station itself also open up on us and the Derby, already damaged, sustains critical damage, with a missile misfire within one of the bent launchers sealing the crew's fate. Yet with the Admiral's orders clear, we maintain our advance, with the destroyers laying some fire down upon the enemy to cover for our frigates' advance - and so, at the moment of ranging confirmation, the eighteen tentacles of the Beast open up to spew unholy electronic fire down upon the unexpecting foe. The Swarmers are too many for their defenses. Those with their shields still up see them broken, whilst those who had been damaged by our own destroyers' volleys are directly impacted by EMP missiles, disabling ship systems.

The enemy is now greatly weakened, though about half of their combat ships can still fight.

2/4 due to the crit fail

The enemy must have a capable commander at the very least - they micromanage their maneuvers finely. The heavier vessels take vanguard positions, at times shielding those behind them physically so that they can get their systems back in order. With our first and in some places second volley of EMP missiles spent, some of our frigates switch to regular Swarmers. Just as the "Wretched Claw" was firing off its last volley, a one in a million enemy shot strikes the cluster of missiles just as they had left the launcher, disabling the frigate with its own ammunition. A pair of subsequent shots then destroy it completely as it is completely unable to maneuver. Frigates destroyed on our side now number two, with three crippled and five damaged. One of our destroyers, the "Blackbeard" is also coming under heavy fire and has lost its shields.
The enemy is putting up a hard fight and has regained some manner of cohesion, but the advantage is still clearly on our side as their own vessels are also being destroyed or disabled one by one. Some of the transports at their rear are attempting to escape the battlefield now, however, in particular the one large ship among them - with a pair of combat vessels breaking off from the main fighting line just to provide it with a rearguard.

Tactical orders by the Black Admiral may influence outcomes further.

"Surrender or every lifeform on your ship and this planet is forfeit."
The Admiral's message is sent out in Standard Zian, the most widely understood alien language - to our knowledge. Sure enough, a reply comes through in the same language.
"Servants of the True Path do not bow to serpents. Your threats are hollow, for our faith is stronger than anything. Where one falls, a hundred shall rise until your jewelled spires are but dust returned to the void. Destroy the planet if you will, but we take no orders from you, accursed servant of-"
The speech is cut off by sounds of shots and distorted alien screams. After a minute of uncertainty, we once more receive a reply.
"Take what you wish, but spare our people's lives. A few of the more fervent believers may try to stop you, but most will stand back. We will try to stop the fanatics on our side, so I beg you - show mercy, if not to us, then to those on the surface at least. This is just a small frontier settlement, our cargo was not meant for here."

Thus, complete victory is secured. The Black Hounds are sent out and begin scouring the captured station and the ships that were not destroyed in the battle. As we were warned, a few aliens struggle to the last, but they are too few, too scattered and too demoralized to offer significant resistance - not a single one of our Hounds falls in combat. Indeed, on some ships we see the same scene having played out again and again - the crews fighting among each other for control of the vessel and its fate. On one of the disabled destroyers the Hounds even saw the fight as it was ongoing. Zealous soldiers were attempting to seize control of the ship's command center, apparently to initiate a self-destruct order, but none succeeded, as the acting commander of the fleet had ordered a stand down.

The aliens we are dealing with are none other than the Zoram - and, evident from quick questioning, these are indeed the "Free Zoram" variety, who do not count themselves as vassals of the Stareater Empire. Their fleet stopped here merely to rest and resupply on their journey towards the core worlds of their kind. What they carry are spoils of war - captured weapons, armor, relics and slaves, from none other than the Drazerii. The large transport we disabled is in fact a large transport ship with sturdy containment areas wherein hundreds of captive Drazerii are kept - not just fighters, but civilians too, including children.

For us, the spoils of battle are not just those, but also a variety of minor valuables, personal and shipborn equipment, fuel, ammunition and general supplies necessary for a fleet's operation. Across the various captured vessels, over a thousand Zoram crewmen also remain alive and could be taken as captives if we so wish.

A captain's meeting of the Black Fleet is called. What do you mean to do with these xenos - how much will you take and will you do anything else in this system?

Take everything not nailed down along with pulling any information we can from their systems. A few of the less zealous crewmembers will be taken to help pilot the captured ships. Besides that everything will be taken back to Tortuga.

Offer the Drazerrii a choice, join the Black Fleet or get blown out the airlocks.

Besides acting as curiosities - or as necessary supplies to commandeer the captured enemy ships and bring them along - most of the material gathered is of little direct use to us. The wealth that could be extracted from it will be somewhat modest.
From the wrecks of the enemy fleet there are still several vessels that can travel and we are taking them with us. Navigational data that we have acquired will be of immense importance both for the Black Fleet and for our wider operations in this sector of space, as it is precisely the lack of navdata that has been one of the biggest hurdles in planning.
Interrogating the Zoram proves to be somewhat difficult - or at the very least slow. Still, there'll be enough time on Tortuga to make the ugly bastards talk.

As for the Drazerii, that is something we must deliberate. After being presented with our terms, about twenty or so of their warriors agree to join the fleet if the rest are freed and given a Zoram ship with which they can return home - those are their terms.
A.Agree, we'll take these volunteers and let the rest be on their way
B.Clap them all in chains and drag them to Tortuga
C.Out the airlock with those who do not fall in line.
D.Dispose of them all. They are a liability - after all, it was the Drazerii who raided this system.

Having considered the size of the average Drazerii and the effort required to throw them out of airlocks, that last part is only done metaphorically, through a more simple method - blowing the entire prison ship to tiny bits with nuclear fusion missiles after everything valuable has been taken out. The Zoram we leave behind are given a story to tell - that we are in fact a retaliation force of Drazerii and that we have reclaimed our brothers and sisters and are taking them home. The evil prison ship was destroyed as a symbolic gesture. With the job done, some hours are required to regroup, repair and reassess our position. Three Shrike frigates were destroyed during the battle and of those crippled in the fight one is too heavily damaged to be repaired - its crew is recovered and the ship is scuttled. The rest are brought in shape well enough to set sail once more, with a course for the Black Fleet's Cove.

Overall, this was a successful operation. The data secured as a result of it will be crucial to the major offensive that is set to begin in a few months' time. Our facilities in the Esterpels system will also give us more to work with further along the line. The combat experience gained is also of great importance and the Admiralty will surely take a great interest in analyzing it in preparation for The Big One.

In high spirits, the Black Fleet weighs anchor. In preparations for hyperjump, a few crewmen on the Queen Anne's Revenge begin singing, which - thanks to a particularly jolly comms officer - soon spreads across the rest of the fleet.

The Black Fleet returns to its cove and gets to work on repairing ships, interrogating prisoners, studying alien technology and preparing for the next fight. War preparations elsewhere are going more or less on schedule. The costs that the government has taken on are serious, but on the other hand it's making a lot of money for those in the right businesses - building ships requires minerals and factories to turn out alloys, shipyards to assemble the vessels, weapons factories making arms, armor and ammo, fuel refineries preparing hyperfuel and helium in mass quantities; Farmers sell their produce to food processing plants, textiles are being turned into uniforms and most important of all perhaps - water is measured and prepared for ships that will be spending a long time in space, carrying thousands of crewmen and possibly tens of thousands of soldiers. Indeed, there's so much work to go around that our domestic production is not fully capable of managing it all and the Admiralty's logistics department has become one of the primary importers of caffeine (and other stimulants) on Selestine.
Issuing war bonds has spread out our public debt somewhat, with bonds worth 500 Million FreeMoney having been sold already. The people's faith seems to depend on our ability to make this great effort worth the expense as public debate on matters of war and peace is now widespread - there have been marches in the streets, agitating for both.
One can see a similar picture painted across most of human space and to any outside observer it's become impossible to hide the fact that these upstarts in space are going to make a move very soon.
Navigational data secured by the Black Fleet, alongside other sources, provides us with a wider map of space.

The Black Sun War - in particular the Battle of Asgard - showed to the governments involved that without a doubt there was something to the rumors which had been swirling around human space by that point, speaking of people in the distant colonies manifesting strange abilities allowing them to manipulate the outside world using their own minds. Indeed, all nations involved began making inquiries and setting up secret research facilities over time to look into the matter.
In 2283, the ICS was the first to go public in announcing to the world that psionics are real, potentially dangerous, yet also holding much potential for use. A few weeks later, Space-XL, core member of the Free Enterprise Pact, announced that it was beginning a great research initiative in the sphere of psionics and was reaching out to any and all people who believe they or others around them have psionic abilities, seeking to recruit them for the program. In the years since then, the Eurasian Alliance and the United Cities of America have both followed in making public announcements on their psionic research programs and open recruitment centers, along with tests to determinute aptitude, have been established.
Common psionic abilities known to us include telepathy, telekinesis, limited precognition, psionic empathy, gravitational manipulation.

The government of the Extrasolar Free State has similarly now set up official research bases and dedicated a committee to the pursuit of knowledge in this sphere. The Blackwell Foundation reached out the day after the decision was made and has struck up a partnership with the Ministry of Research, releasing some of its own documentation to the public in turn - showing that they have been studying psionics for seventy years now. This has been known to some in our government in secret, as there has even been a partnership program with ESIA for decades now. From 2210 until now there have been around a hundred trainees in the Blackwell Foundation's psychic program who have successfully manifested and obtained a measure of control over their abilities. According to their research, exposure to antimatter found in volatile elements and hyperfuel is what allows some humans to unlock latent psionic abilities. This can carry dangers with it if the process of exposure is not handled safely, however, potentially causing mutations, psychological damage or death.

The Foundation's aid has allowed our government to make up for the time lost until in waiting until now. Some foreign research groups dispute the Blackwell Foundation's claims - which, if correct, would mean they are the first (still active) group to have successfully advanced studies in this field.

With a basic psionic theory established and facilities being opened up, future research into this field may yield more practical results.
>>
All material preparations are now finished - the armed forces of the Extrasolar Free State stand at the ready.

We shall gather the Human Alliance Fleet in the Kepura system and make singular thrust into Drazerii space with the goal of conquering a series of planets before taking the fight to their homeworld. The goal is to destroy their navy, rescue slaves and force a treaty upon them.

The Human Alliance, founded as a pact decades ago, is now proceeding with its first ever true test of action. The star Kepler-186, one of the earliest and to this day furthest outposts of humanity, is where the combined fleets of our species assemble. New Shenzhen, originally designated Kepler-186f, is a well developed and prosperous colony planet, boasting a population of around 42 million. Its stellar infrastructure is also well set up, able to act as a staging ground for such a large invasion.

The first question at hand should be: How many ships and troops should we send to Kepura? Will the Black Fleet be acting alongside the rest or separately?

The second question should be whether we seek to take part in one big push with all human fleets united or to take our own course in this war.

You may present plans both detailed and not on what you propose to Alliance High Command. Discussions are already occurring among the top brass as to how to best proceed. You can always say that you'll abide with the majority opinion also.

You see, I have studied the art of the Drazerii for many years. They will no avoid a battle that aims for their homeworld. It is an insult to their brutalistic honour and to have even a single foreigner set foot on their homeworld would require their most high ranking warlords to commit suicide over allowing this to happen.

It is in their art after all.

The entirety of the Extrasolar Free State Fleet and Army should be deployed in this situation.

The Black Fleet should act independently.

All of the Human Fleets should gather for one concentrated thrust.
>>

Black Fleet can act on his own, but should remain in contact in case if it s needed.

Army Divisions should move in drazerii systems when we have secure them from the naval point.
Human Fleets should balance themselves and takeout 3 major targets that will cripple the Drazerii for industry, naval and morale. So the fleets should be divide in 3 attack groups.

Leaving a defense force behind, our fleet arrives in Kepura to rendezvous with the rest of the Alliance forces on March 2nd. The admirals are in agreement on one thing - we'll need a beachhead in Drazerii territory first and that is going to be the Boek system, 50 parsecs away. Operation Pioneer is the name of the plan and it will have us going in guns blazing, ready to set up shop for further advances in alien territory. The journey will require several refueling stops. After we've established a presence in enemy territory, the admirals will convene once again to decide whether an advance on their core system of Kechot is viable or whether a three-pronged advance would suit us better.

03.03.2288 - the grand fleet, numbering around four thousand ships, prepares for the jump into hyperspace.

04.04.2288 - the Alliance fleet warps into realspace in the Boek system. The comms light up - roll calls sound out and it seems the fleet has managed to synchronize its movements properly, every group is here and we aren't waiting on anybody. That is a good thing, because sensors soon pick up a massive amount of energy signatures within the system, in orbit around one of its planets. There's no mistaking it - that must be a fleet.
A message goes out on open waves, received by all:

"Oy there, human gits! Name's Big Batto, boss o' these parts, real pleasure to ave ya. Yous lot finally found it in ya harts to come over ere for a scrap eh? This message was delivered without an autotranslator. There's some confusion among parts of the fleet for a minute, before we manage to get our bearings together more or less.
The Drazerii are waiting for us, their fleet situated five light seconds away from our current position.
"Seeing as they knew we were coming" says Admiral Hawkins "they probably could have ambushed us at the likely exit point of our fleet. They're here for sport, the bastards".

The number of Drazerii ships, according to our initial readings, is roughly equal to our own fleet - between two and four thousand vessels.

The enemy allows us the first shot and it brings a great cheer to the crew of the Bonaparte when it is registered as a hit. A thousand other ships soon light up the void with their coilguns and lasers, sporadically registering hits upon the enemy. The Drazerii fleet moves out of its position, their formation a loose one - with room enough for individual ships to be able to perform fast maneuvers to the side in order to evade projectiles. Return fire is weaker than what we're putting out, but the scanners and comms officers soon go wild - readings don't match the reality as one ship after another takes seemingly impossible hits. An overwhelming noise of activity is registered - that of over two thousand near simultaneous hyperjumps occuring and shortly thereafter ending - utilizing microjumps, the larger part of the Drazerii fleet has suddenly closed the distance we had between our fleets, now standing in close range, a few of their ships having even exited at point blank range, with more than one subsequent ramming being registered, with the carrier "Midway" taking a hard blow from a vessel a third of its size punching into its hull.

The first wave of the enemy's lightning assault is devastating for many sections of our combined fleet, but our own small front handles it better than most - our Shrikes are well suited for an engagement at this range and are deployed around all of our larger vessels, which are evidently prime targets for boarding attacks and ramming action. Thanks to this missile screening and the deployment of fighters, we're able to hold off the enemy's onslaught for our part, but across the wider battle lines the situation hangs in uncertain balance. The enemy's main formation stabilizes and now focuses primarily on firepower as individual strike teams launch out to target weak points in our allies' line.

Just as we thought our own section had stabilized, a powerful volley of enemy fire pummels into our dreadnought and the escorts around it - with a path of approach cleared, a rapid assault force closes in, overcoming the defenses around our capital ship and launching boarding pods that bite deep into the Collins' hull in multiple locations. Drazerii troops are on board now, engaging the marines of the 1st Marines Regiment, 2nd Battalion on board. Elsewhere casualties continue mounting, although overall combat cohesion remains.

Estimated effective combat strength left:
Human Alliance: 60% overall; EFS - 65%
Drazerii: 65%

Our marines are putting up a fight, but the enemies they face are unlike the Drazerii familiar to us. These foes are not just wild brutes flailing their weapons around - unlike the raiders we've faced before, these are true soldiers, each of them heavily armored, with personal shields and varied weaponry. Lasers bounce off their deflectors, bullets bend against their plating - when a shot does go through, pain is no issue to the warriors, who keep running forward, firing off blasts of gauss pellets, burning away with flamers or sticking into melee, using spiked axes to bite into their foes or hammers to bend the armor on our soldiers. 2nd Battalion is taking heavy casualties, the outer corridors are lost and so Delta and Echo company are forced to split up, defending the hallways leading towards the bridge and the reactor respectively.

Outside, casualties continue to mount as morale wavers. The Drazerii relish in this fight, whilst some individual ships on the outer edges of our allies' formations have begun to break off. The Black Fleet is on the way, having stopped in the previous system before here, awaiting further reports - but it'll need several hours to reach the battlefield and time is precious.

I want 2d100 from each of you now. The first will go towards the space battle, the second - towards the defense of the Collins.

Hours drag by. In space and on board many ships in our combined fleet, the battle continues on. Multiple Drazerii strike forces have broken through our main line of battle, emerging in our rear, but the large ratio of screening ships compared to capital vessels allows our formation to adjust properly, with the small, maneuverable vessels breaking off in squadrons to defend the rear. It's a massacre for both sides, the battlefield now littered with debris that make maneuvering hard. This works to our side's advantage, as the initiative held by the Drazerii initially is now gone. If we can hold off for just a short while longer, reinforcements will be here to help.
Aboard the flagship, crewmen have taken up arms and engineers have helped set up barricades, turrets, shield barriers - enough to slow the Drazerii down, forcing them to exchange ground gained with bodies of their own.
Admiral Hawkings leaves command up to his deputies and instead chooses to put on his personal suit of power armor, taking his guards with him to the front - he will not abandon the ship in any way.

Across the battlefield, both sides are at half or less of their effective initial starting strength.

The date has turned, the battle has been going on for over 12 hours. Many ships are out of ammo or low on energy, needing to be cycled back. Drazerii vessels have also started running out of projectiles, many of them attempting ramming attacks instead - but those are no longer surprises for our allied commanders. Delegated command allows individual ships to act to the best of their capabilities as the battle devolves into smaller skirmishes and maneuvers.
Aboard the Collins, Admiral Hawkings is wounded in a firefight, but dragged back to safety by marines. The line holds, if just barely.

0400 hours Etar City time, a short morse code signal reaches Vice-Admiral O'Brian on the bridge of the Collins - "-.-- .- .-. .-. -.-.--"

On the enemy's flank, a new force has emerged - small in size, it has managed to remain concealed until now and brings a special kit with it. The Black Fleet is here!

In the grand scale of the battle, a force of thirty ships is not a huge presence - yet in the right time and place, the help it can lend is immense. Engaging the enemy's central firing line from behind, a dozen of their cruisers are disabled by EMP missiles. With a breath of fresh air afforded to many of our own ships, the tide turns. One by one, the enemy's forward strike groups are repelled, thrown off by fighters and frigates. A fresh battalion of marines lands in the Collins, encircling the Drazerii that have boarded it. Steadily, hope returns to the faces of captains, crewmen and marines across the united human fleet.

Quickly nursed back to consciousness and taken on his stretcher to the bridge, Fleet Admiral Hawkings receives the reports and nods. Orders are given to regroup our scattered formation for a final push, but it would seem that the Drazerii are in fact withdrawing towards the settled planet.
A comms officer speaks up:
"Admiral, another open message! Transmitting now."

"Ye cunts are ol roit. Good scrap 'ere, I'll call it a day. Ave a pint and come at us again in a few."

A series of sighs follow, both of relief and exhaustion.
EFS effective fleet strength is 40%. Full repairs and resupply could restore it to 65%. The numbers are roughly similar across the rest of the Alliance fleet. Less than half of the initial numbers of the Drazerii can still be identified.

The battle is winding down, it seems. What should we do?
A.Pursue the Drazerii fleet!
B.Regroup and recuperate, prepare for an advance on the planet afterwards
C.Regroup, repair whatever's needed and withdraw

Staying within the system, our support ships get to work. Reserves that had staid behind in the previous system are called in to help - among them an entire flotilla of corporate ships, a sort of baggage train acting for the fleet, consisting of transports bearing supplies, engineering ships, hospital ships, several recreational barges and the necessary escorts to keep the formation safe. Missiles are restocked, medicine distributed wherever it is short and thousands of drone workers begin repairs on damaged shiips.
Three days pass - another batch of reinforcements arrive, a mishmash of ships from Nobilo Viro and Al-Khalasi, volunteers from the Free State of Jefferson and the Atlas Freedom Pact and a detachment from distant Ganesh even. The Drazerii have not pulled out of the system though - they have been licking their own wounds, maintaining defensive positions around the settled planet. Groups of ships have been coming and leaving steadily - they won't let the planet fall without a fight.

This part of the operation will be resolved in one roll.

The battle over Boek II lasts three days. This time, the defenders mostly stick to long-distance fighting themselves, only once launching a strike force into close quarters through minijump. At the cost of some casualties, our allied forces repelled that forward group, after which the rest organized into an orderly retreat out of the system.

The space over the planet is secured. It is a world largely covered in snow and frozen lakes, with a warm central sea home to more temperate islands.

What should we do here?
A.Cause damage to the local infrastructure, but do not commit to any ground occupation.
B.Glass them all from orbit
C.Seize key facilities and hold them, focus our forces in just a select few locations
D.Mass invasion, the planet will be ours!

Factories, starports, communications centers and the primary space elevator are all hit - either by orbital strikes or bomber wings. A few bombers are lost along the way, but we've rendered the planet useless to both us and the enemy for some time now.

The next decision is harder. Our fleet stands at just over half of its initial strength. We've made some tactical victories and showed the Drazerii that we are a force to be reckoned with - that's for sure.

A.Continue a united advance on their capital
B.Spread out to strike at multiple enemy systems, the goal is to incur damage on their infrastructure and be a pain

E. Alliance Command has approved of the establishment of a forward base of operations in the Boek system, including the construction of a Yamada Hypergate to link it to New Shenzhen. The Yamada corporation had apparently expected this and its engineers immediately begin working on it, whilst facilities are being established with help from other megacorps, who chiefly busy themselves with the logistics of this war. The fleet will take ten days to rest and regroup, send out scouts and prepare for the advance on the next system on the way to the Drazerii core.
The Black Fleet will do what it does best, taking on supplies and then going dark.

The situation as of early May, 2288:
A forward base in the Boek system has been firmly established. Drazerii forces attempted to raid our positions there, expecting them to be lightly defended, only to find themselves greatly outgunned and defeated in battle. A steady stream of reinforcements begins to flow in thanks to the hyperlane network established with human space, in which most populations are currently supportive of the war effort thanks to capable media manipulation. Scouting ahead reveals that the Drazerii are seeking to mass their forces at the next system along our path - Baktika. The forces they have there are currently fewer than the ones we have in Boek, with the ratio being 3:2 in our favor at the moment.
The Black Fleet has struck two systems to the galactic east of Boek, in the direction of the Stareater Empire. They damaged mining facilities, shipping infrastructure and a major industrial center for hyperfuel refining. The latest reports sent in by corporate spy probes indicate the Drazerii have sent a fleet of around a hundred ships to the affected area, attempting to trail our corsairs.

What do you propose we do now? Opinions in Allied command are somewhat split between the two options:
A.Advance on Baktika now! We will break through the enemy and keep on until we hit their capital.
B.Spend some more time gathering our forces - EFS reinforcements have yet to arrive for instance.

Having learned from Operation Pioneer, joint command prepared its tactical approach well this time. The fleet would stick to a closer formation, with three-dimensional checkerboard placement of screening ships of frigate and destroyer classes around every cruiser or larger vessel, with meticulously planned lines of overlapping fire and an organized withdraw order for damaged vessels. Simulations of many possible vectors of advance, microjump points and an analysis of the enemy's effective firepower at different ranges also prepared us with several strategies to adapt to.
With all of this in mind, our commanders had confidence and a general calm about them as they entered the Baktika system. Whereas we had adapted to the situation, the warlord Big Batto practically repeated the same tactics he'd used in the Battle of Boek - a short engagement at long range, followed by a rapid closing of distance by his smaller vessels as the main firing line then proceeded in an echeloned advance that would batter at whatever side of our formation was weakened.
The results were thus predictable - Drazerii vessels individually performed well enough, but they lacked their combined edge from before. Most of their boarding attacks could not reach their targets and those that did were in most cases held off long enough for relief forces to arrive where needed.
In the climax of the battle, the desperate Batto directed his center, those cruiesrs who had maintained a medium range, to charge in, hoping to exploit a perceived weakness in the American fleet's formation. This move was countered by our EFS fleet and our ICS allies, who were close by, both forces moving to envelop the Drazerii formation, whilst the americans simply opened up a gap in their line where the highly accelerated column of cruisers was moving, allowing them to pass through harmlessly, their acceleration impeding maneuverability.
Within less than 24 hours of the first shot being fired, two thirds of the Drazerii fleet was destroyed and of those who remained only half escaped, the rest being ships too damaged to move or fight.
Casualties on our side amounted to around 200 ships destroyed and 700 damaged, yet repairable.

The Baktika system is home to two settled planets(and a number of moons) - whereas Boek was a Drazerii colony, Baktika's local population is predominantly Zoram. Smaller groups of other races are to be found here - Prnusk, Raktun and Mopolans from the Empire, some having come as guest workers, others brought as slaves. Among the slave population toiling in the mines on the moons of Baktika IV is also a community of humans, both people brought here by Zoram slavers and their children. Apparently this system and some in the area are the result of conquest by the Drazerii, who sought to expand into the territory of those Zoram who were no longer under Imperial protection. The slaves of Baktika were hopeful that this change in government would see them liberated, but the Drazerii had simply replaced the top level of the administration, installed a garrison to ensure tribute towards their core worlds would flow and kept the rest of the machine working as before - most of the Zoram slavemasters who would interact with the slaves remained the same and the trade of slaves in the system continued as before.
The local economy is primarily based on resource extraction, the system being rich in rare earths on the moons of Baktika IV and the outer asteroid belt and major agriculture and organic materials production on the ocean-dominated Baktika III.
Our information so far comes from humans we found on the Baktika IV's second moon. That is the only planetary object in the system which we have a presence so far, as our fleet pursued a number of Drazerii ships which sought to use its port facilities for repairs. Our fleet captured the port, destroying our disabling those ships who'd reached it and then overwhelming the local garrison. There are other garrisons across this moon, however, as well as more installations across the remaining two planets and three moons with economic facilities - and slaves- on them.
Around a thousand human slaves, two thousand other alien slaves and again that many free aliens are within our small zone of control. The full number of slaves across the system is unknown.

What do you propose we do now? The system may be under our control, but its planets are not and this is not the last of the Drazerii space forces.

As for liberation, begin bombarding garrisons with the fleet, demanding their surrender. Only bombard if we are sure there is no slave presence. Other civilian casualties are deemed acceptable.
If slaves are present, use limited fire support before sending in ground assault teams to aid slaves and take over.
After liberating the moon, we should use it as a base to the then threaten Bktika IV, Keeping roughly half the fleet there to begin strategic bombardment and ground operations.
Meanwhile the second half of the fleet should focus on liberating each smaller station, asteroid and moon before heading towards Baktika III and enacting a similar strategy there.

The Black Fleet engaged its pursuers on the 11th of May in a frontier system with no significant settlements - the ambush they laid managed to catch many ships unawares, but not all - enough Drazerii ships survived the first two volleys of EMP missiles that the element of surprise was lost. Twenty Drazerii ships were destroyed before a proper counterattack could be mounted, but the eighty that remained then engaged the Black Fleet in a largely conventional fight, using its maneuverability and numbers to fight the pirates to exhaustion, blasting or boarding one destroyer after another.
After four hours of battle, the Queen Anne's Revenge stood alone of the entire fleet, with around fifty enemy ships still in fighting shape. After all its missiles were exhausted and another enemy cruiser felled, the flagship's shields finally broke - the Admiral made the choice to call the retreat, giving full power to the engines. The Queen Anne's Revenge rammed through a Drazerii destroyer trying to block its exit, taking fire along the way, sustaining some hull damage before entering hyperspace.
Upon exiting into realspace in another system, signs of boarders were found - of Drazerii marines who had tried to board from that destroyer, yet stuck themselves onto the ship's outer hull just as it prepared for its hyperjump. Their magboots kept them attached to the hull, but they were outside the protective field created by the hyperdrive. The engineers inspecting the damage find their armor suits, still attached to the outer hull like statues, with their insides being either ash or horrid goo.
With gruesome remains of the battle and the entire destroyer force lost, the damaged carrier EFSS Churchill begins to limp back to friendly space.

In the Biktaka system, varied strategies were employed to fulfill the objectives set before us.
The third moon, which we tackled first, was quickly secured. Three other garrisons of note were to be found and with full aerial supremacy on our side they were quickly eliminated, the mining settlements soon liberated.
On Biktaka IV, the main Drazerii force was concentrated in large military base, outfitted with its own spaceport, from where transports would bring troops wherever necessary. A few tactical nuclear fusion missiles, followed by secondary orbital bombardment were enough to level the facility. Signs indicated 90+% casualties - a few soldiers escaping to underground vaults. Their ability to exert force over the planet, however, was destroyed. Quick strikes on lesser installations followed and thus the dry plains of Biktaka IV were secured. The planet's economic sites, under the control of local Zoram administrators, quickly surrendered.
On the planet's second and fourth moon, the slaves rose up in revolt - there the garrisons were very small, skeleton crews in practice, reliant on aid from the planet in case of any conflict. Rapid deployment of troops from our fleet quickly reinforced those revolts with professional army troops to help them throw off their chains against both the Zoram slavers and Drazerii soldiers.
The first moon of Biktaka I had its entire production and slave population centered around one major city, engaged in deep core mining. Here the vast underground facilities and the proximity of civilians and enemies meant that orbital bombardment was out of the question - however, upon hearing of the revolts on the other moons, the local Zoram administrators actually contacted our fleet, looking to strike a bargain. The Drazerii garrison on the moon was entrenching itself, preparing for a prolonged battle in close quarters, just as they wished - the Zoram, wishing to preserve their own private property and safety, agreed to stab their rulers in the back, killing the soldiers wherever they can and taking over the defense systems to allow our troops in. The Zoram would let all the slaves on the moon go and in return are to be allowed to leave with their lives and their personal, inanimate belongings. The following day, the plan was enacted and within 24 hours the moon was secured,
Biktaka III was all that remained. There, the population and the local military were largely concentrated on two large, settled islands. The garrison there used the populace as living shields, discouraging us from conducting any serious bombardment once more - this is where almost all of the actual ground fighting in the system took place, as our combined armies disembarked and engaged the enemy in open battle - the cities had serious defensive emplacements, so there was fighting across the outer areas of the two islands. After the first day of battle, slave revolts began and with numbers on our side, complete victory took another eight days.
>>
By the 25th of May the Biktaka system is secured - only small pockets of resistance remain, but all major population centers are now under our control. Fifteen thousand human slaves are to be found across the system, along with another thirty thousand belonging to other alien races. Most Drazerii are killed or held captive. The two moons with major slave revolts saw the local Zoram slavers killed as well, but elsewhere there remain both regular Zoram civilians and slavemasters alive, albeit no longer with their living property in hand.
What next, commanders?

Expel all slavers, they are not to take their property with them, their assets are to be redistributed among the former slaves as compensation. Regular civilians fate shall be left to the former slaves, as while they did not participate in the vile act they were wilfully ignorant to the suffering of those in chains, While we won't tolerate a massacre, a supervised expulsion, and seizure of assets is not out of the question.
As for grand strategy, we shall leave a garrison in this system before moving onto the next.
We shall secure any nearby systems while sending scouts out ahead to locate any significant Drazerii forces/settlements.
The aim of this offensive is to reach the Homeworld/Capital of the Drazerii.

On the 1st of June our allied fleet, reinforced once more to three thousand strong, enters Argaba, the next system along the route to Kechot. This is another formerly Zoram-held system, though it is more developed and is also home to a Drazerii-dominated jungle planet. The resistance we faced here was different - a small fleet, holding back, engaging in a short exchange of fire before retreating behind a moon, using it as cover, then launching themselves into a quick suicidal attack on the leftmost wing of our formation which had extended outward from the core in order to envelop the moon and get into firing range. The americans took some casualties there, but the defenders were dispatched soon enough. The planets resisted our approaches with anti-orbital emplacements, small strike vessels sortieing out of underground bases and a general attitude of being a menace to our fleet - unable to do any serious damage but instead harassing us wherever possible. This is the first system in which we found a local hypergate network - which, upon our arrival, was immediately destroyed by its controllers to prevent it being used by our fleet.

Investigations reveal that there had been a larger fleet here preparing to defend against us, but most of its number left the system a few days before we arrived.

Once again, we can see the practice of slavery in this system as in Baktika - the local economic output appears to be even more significant, with industrial centers that refine the materials from nearby star systems, their local trading hub being here.

Scout reports indicate that the next system on the path to the Kechat is also devoid of any large military presence. Another report says that a force of Free Zoram ships has entered into Drazerii territory not far from our current position, possibly intending to retake lost territory.

What next? Push on rapidly, open talks with one or both of the alien factions, secure our position in this system of Argaba or perhaps even call it a day and prepare to pull out? The logistical situation with our fleet is stable so far, but our supply lines are getting longer.

The other invading force identifies its allegiance as one belonging to the Sacred Pact of Zor, a recently formed nation that has united the Free Zoram systems and has embarked on a sacred war of reconquest against the Drazerii. If we agree to hand over all territories settled by their race in Drazerii space - making up around a quarter of their total holdings - they are willing to give us all slaves found. If we demonstrate our intent to keep our side of the bargain by allowing them to take over civilian administration of Baktika and Argaba, they will fight alongside us against the Drazerii.

Alliance high command now has to consult the politicians at home as well, since this is not an entirely military decision either. What stance does the EFS take on such a deal with the Zoram?

The Zoram are harsh negotiators, it would seem. They've rejected any and all counteroffers from our side, stating that the sovereignty of rightful Zoram space is non-negotiable. Their final message was that they hope we'll come around to understanding that and reach out to them again soon.
Meanwhile in the Argaba system, our forces on the ground are finding pacification harder than before, particularly on the jungle world of Argaba II, where the Drazerii are well fortified, using their knowledge of the local terrain to their advantage and fending off many of our aerial strikes. Completely securing the system will take some more time.
A.Take our time here, use it to reinforce the space fleet further.
B.Order saturation bombardment of Argaba II from orbit to speed things up whilst more forces gather in space.
C.Move towards the capital faster, we don't have time to waste here.
D.Glass the jungle first, then get moving.

Reinforcements arrived quickly, bringing the fleet up to a strength of 3300 ships, all the while our scouting parties kept on transmitting reports, having spread out in every direction from our main advance. We took the next system on the route to the capital, Prebikh, with minimal resistance - we found almost no military ships, but we did catch a large convoy of transport vessels that were bringing strategically important supplies, namely hyperfuel and ammunition, to the capital.
20.06.2288 - the united fleet reaches the Bragh system, last on our route before Kechot - here a decisive victory is secured against the defending forces, which we outnumbered by more than four to one. Taking a few days for supplies and information to catch up, the fleet receives a transmission from the EFS recon squadron commanded by Captain Saoirse Gallagher - that the largest of the Drazerii fleets, which had been assembled at their home system, estimated to number between three and five thousand, had left in order to meet the Zoram invasion. They left before our arrival in Bragh, likely expecting the forces there to be able to hold us off long enough, yet when our fleet took the initiative and attacked first, the enemy was unable to respond adequately and was broken quickly, their force of rag-tag converted freighters and rushed warships lacking cohesion.
The scouts are trailing the Drazerii's main fleet and it's estimated by our analysts that they will engage in battle at some point around the turn of the month, most likely in the Grambagh Starzone. A last line of defense of no more than several hundred ships has been left in Kechot, which is now just ten parsecs away from us. The question is, how shall we proceed?

A.Advance on Kechot, we will plant our flags on the Drazerii homeworld itself!
B.Move towards Grambagh, this will be the best chance for us to wipe their fleet out!
C.Ignore those two targets and instead have our fleet spread out to attack the other core worlds, now undefended, crippling the Drazerii economy!

It is decided - we must destroy the ability of the Drazerii to wage war across the stars, from there everything else will follow suit. All ships set course for the Grambagh Starone!

30.06.2288 - our ships exit hyperspace in the outer areas of the starzone. A flood of information comes in and analysis begins:

The Grambagh star is orbited by seven planets, with three being settled worlds. Grambagh III and its moon are the center of local commerce and thus a large space fortress protects them both - the Drazerii fleet has flocked to it, whilst the Zoram have lined themselves up fairly close to the star and have already begun a long distance engagement, utilizing their kinetic artillery. The Zoram appear outnumbered in pure numbers, with around 3200 of their ships as opposed to 4200 Drazerii vessels, but the Zoram have a larger proportion of heavy ships in their fleet composition.

The clash must have begun not long ago, as we detecting only a few wrecked vessels on either side. How do you propose we proceed?

Our fleet forms up near one of Grambagh VI's moons, putting it on our right to prevent any enemy attacks from that angle.
1.07.2288 - the capital ships of our fleet open up with their first volley, their synchronized fire ensuring a blanketing effect of projectiles to reduce the effectiveness of evasive maneuvers from the Drazerii. Seeing this, the Zoram move their fleet up slightly, allowing a greater output from them as well, putting the defenders between a rock and a hard place. Their return fire is weak at this range and for a full day they are on the receiving end of a battering.
Just after the 25th hour of our engagement, we see a large section of the Drazerii fleet breaking off and accelerating towards us - they will most likely attempt a synchronized microjump now, but we are prepared!

Rather unexpectedly, the Drazerii strike force jumped to a distance of around one light second from us, which is considered mid-range - just beyond our most effective missile range. They engaged us in a conventional firefight instead, which dragged on for some time until we finally understood the reason - a part of their forces had warped on the other side of the moon we're using as a shield and swung around it to come up to our backs now! This attack hits the Eurasian sector in our center the hardest and, seeing their opportunity, the enemy in front also charges in now. If we can maintain order in our battle lines, we should be able to throw them off, however!

Our roughly 3000-strong fleet faces 2000 enemy ships in front and 500 at our rear.

Though this particular maneuver was not expected by most, our plans for engaging the Drazerii always included a substantial rear guard presence - they were spread out to cover a wider area but are now swiftly redeployed to deal with the lunar assault forces, whilst our main battle lines continue to slug it out. Our experience in fighting this enemy has transferred down to the individual ship level, with captains being better able to maneuver and fight off their boarding rushes, although some cruisers still fall prey to them - the overall battle situation is looking hopeful though as we have not broken up and are maintaining good order in dealing with the enemy. The Zoram are putting pressure on the fortress also - should we maintain this momentum for a little longer, the battle will be won - and with it, the war!

After another six hours of grueling fighting including volleys of laser blasts, kinetic bombardments, missile swarms, boarding attacks and a few attempts at ramming (one of which succeeded in sinking the cruiser ICSS "Fraternité") the battle draws to a close - the Drazerii are battered and exhausted, their maneuvers failing to produce the desired breakthrough results. Two of their flagships are destroyed and their fleet loses much of its overall cohesion, devolving into bands of rampaging fighters. Group by group, they are eliminated, whilst a scant few hundred manage to break off and withdraw - most of them jump into hyperspace in the direction of Kechot under the leadership of their last flagship, but some retreat elsewhere.

The battle of Grambagh, the largest space engagement in human history so far, is over - we have won, having sustained around 20% casualties, yet succeeding in our primary goal of destroying the main Drazerii space fleet, around three quarters of whose numbers are confirmed as destroyed or knocked out.

The Zoram Fleet, at a strength roughly equivalent to our own, now stands over Grambagh III, having destroyed the space fortress there.

Most of the commanders agree that working with the Zoram is beneficial at the moment, whatever our differences otherwise.

Our advance on Kechot was quick - we arrived on the 7th of July, finding the locals not fully prepared for us. The system boasted a great array of defenses, with several fortresses around the Drazerii homeworld Gralgar alone - asteroid bases, hidden hangars on the outer planets and moons - were we evenly matched with the fleet here, all of these may have meant something, but our overwhelming superiority in firepower meant that they were simply obstacles in our advance. One by one the outer planets fell as the once-verdant world of Gralgar, now desertified across most of its surface, remained alone. The defending fleet put up something of a fight, but they lacked clear leadership as the last of their flagships was gone and its commander - the Warlord Robert Jordies from New Perth - was killed in some sort of squabble on the surface, being suspected to have betrayed the race that adopted him for his old one.

By the 20th of July, the Kechot system is under our control - Gralgar, however, is still protected by a great host of warriors, its surface dotted by anti-orbital defenses and massive fortresses, supposedly built to withstand even orbital bombardments. These fortress-palaces are the homes of the warlords and their most trusted warriors and within them are kept great riches, gathered across the centuries as plunder from across this part of the galaxy.

How shall we proceed?

The 22nd was spent in preparation and bombardment. The terrain was scouted, local defenses were bombarded to good effect and landing sites were selected. This time, nations would act individually for the most part and the EFS would take on the assault on the Fortress-Palace of Robert Jordies. Despite the demise of its nominal owner, it was still a site filled with warriors, both former retainers of his and others gathered to join in the coming battle.
The bombardment eliminated the largest of their anti-air defenses, allowing our combat transports and dropships to enter the atmosphere - the fortress maintained overall structural integrity and was able to deploy smaller turrets, creating a zone of defense in its immediate surroundings - thus, our forces chose to instead land some distance away in the bombed-out desert. Before all of our forces had landed, a sandstorm hit, but our troops, trained as they are to deal with various biomes, knew how to respond, establishing a proper perimeter quickly and maintaining line of sight and proper observation of their surroundings - aptly, as a host of Drazerii warriors sallied out of the fortress to attack our landing area. Here our heavy mechanized forces and armored units performed splendidly, tanking the enemy's hits and replying in turn, whilst the infantry laid down precise fire, their modern helmets providing them modes of vision capable of dealing with the raging storm. Within an hour the attack had lost steam, but the Solar Marshal, leading from the front and by example, chose to take the initiative and had the infantry advance on the fortress, using the storm to their advantage now, concealing us from the fortress' anti-ground defenses. By the time the dust lifted, our elite forward teams had scaled the walls and knocked out or taken over the turrets. The gates were opened and our forces poured into the large courtyard, engaging the enemy once more. With the anti-air defenses soon taken care of, bomber squadrons and gunships moved in to provide support from above as we kept going, the momentum ever on our side. The Drazerii fought hard, they fought bravely, but they lacked a cohesive strategy, whereas the forces of the 1st Army division knew exactly what they were doing, systematically clearing out one area after another.
The battle moved into the halls of the palace, adorned with trophies of war, statues of the previous warlords who ruled this palace, paintings of battles they had taken part in. Many small, individual battles took place within the vast fortress that would be the stuff of legends for decades to come, being retold again and again back home, for this was our finest hour - when the men of the Extrasolar Free State took the fight to this proud race of alien warriors and defeated them in their own halls of glory, in the very way of battle they cherished the most. Every soldier who took part in the Battle of Gralgar would bring home not just wealth, but also glory.
>>
Across Gralgar, multiple battles were fought besides our own. Most were victories, some decisive, some costly. None fought as well as the men of your new army, however.
The enemy is thoroughly beaten. They may continue to resist in one place or another, but any strategic victory is no longer within the Drazerii's grasp. What will you do now? Occupation, conquest, negotiation, withdrawl?

It would be another week of sporadic fighting across Gralgar before a group of envoys with some measure of popular support behind them would finally assemble and come before us at Jordies'. These envoys were mostly women, speaking on behalf of the civilians of Gralgar and broader Drazerii space, who wished for peace, along with those warriors with a better sense of strategy, who saw this as an opportunity to cease the fighting with one of their enemies so they could focus on the other. Our allies pushed for even more concessions than what we wanted, attempting to secure a zone of human military presence across the entire southern section of Drazerii space, as well as trade and resource exploitation concessions, not counting the reparations that would be extracted directly from Gralgar. A few of the brutes' delegates even quit the talks, claiming that if their people are to be treated in such a way, they will not stop fighting. The rest instead merely stalled.
On the 8th of August, the situation changed. The Zoram contacted us first, informing us to bring our ships to combat alert immediately, as they had detected entities approaching through hyperspace. Two and a half hours later, a fleet of five thousand warships belonging to the Stareater Empire entered the station. Tensions were high as command and crews prepared for a possible battle to break out any second, but we received communications from the newcomers instead:

"To all political and military elements within the Kechot system - this is Imperial Crown Princess Saatoriel Velsaa Raakhem. I have come in this time of chaos and uncertainty to bring cosmic balance and order to this portion of the galaxy. The war that has been fought here has not escaped the attention of our great Empire, but you may all rest assured, for it can now truly be over. I come before you to mediate peace talks for its end and to act as a guarantor of the peace that must follow. The victors in this conflict are clear, yet this sector of space is renowned as one that has never been pacified by outsiders - without a firm guiding hand, I believe much needless fighting will continue, to the displeasure of all civilized peoples here. In the name of galactic order, we shall strive to act as peacekeepers here."

This "Peacekeeping force" then boldly puts forward its position, stating that they are informed on the talks that have already transpired.

By the terms proposed by the Empire, systems with a majority Zoram population will be granted to the Sacred Pact of Zor. Human slaves will be released and attacks into human and Zoram space will cease, alongside any slave trade concerning the human species. The Boek system will be given over to the human alliance and merchants from human nations may do business in Drazerii space at peace. Reparations will be given for slave raids conducted and the bodies of dead humans, including Robert Jordies, will be returned to their homelands. The Empire will reach out to the Human Alliance with similar terms in allowing traders to enter their space, along with which proper star charts will be transferred. Drazerii space will remain its own polity, acting as a buffer state between Humans, Free Zoram and Imperials - to ensure this treaty's terms last, this Imperial fleet will remain here for the next eight years.

We accept these terms with the understanding that our reparations for this war will be a mighty sum, seeing as we did most of the actual fighting in this war and are handing over all of the systems we took.
While we are here we also would like for the Zoram to also agree that in return for us returning control of those systems they desire, human slavery will end in their own space.
We would also like to enquire as to what lengths the Empire will take in order to subdue Drazerii militarism, for which we can all agree is the cause of the war happening in the first place.

10.08.2288 - The Peace of Gralgar brings an end to the Punitive War, ceding four settled star systems to the Sacred Zoram Pact, establishing a Human-Alliance administrated Boek system and foreseeing a program of reparation payments. All human slaves from both Drazerii and Zoram space are to be returned as well.
To Captain Gallagher's question, the Imperials reply by stating that the Drazerii will be prohibited from building ships bigger than light cruisers and a limit of 100 armed FTL-capable ships - regardless of their designation, commercial or military - will be permitted to each individual system. The destruction of most of the Drazerii's previous leadership, which is to say the council of warlords, means that there is no unifying figure at a level higher than the individual systems or at most a group of stars in close proximity.
With this, the war is over - the troops return home and are given a hero's welcome, with victory parades thrown across human space - never before in the history of our species has every human nation stood together in celebration of a victory earned in war, for those were always at the cost of another's defeat. The financial costs of the war may not have been small, but all things considered it was a success that has inspired confidence in all mankind for the future and our place in the galaxy. For some, it is simply an affirmation of our advancement and ability to keep our space secure against outside thread. Others believe this war has been the first necessary step in human unification. It is up to the historians of generations yet unborn to say for sure what this has been, but for now the great crowds cheer together.

E/B After the War

With the Drazerii Punishment War concluded here in order what the EFS will do for ensure a good return to our previous economic growth.

- Return taxes to previous levels.
- Mothball enough part of the new fleet made if not all. The mothball fleet will be in Selestine and under navy guard/watch. When the EFS will have a larger capacity and can afford this ships without create negative effects in the economy, the mothball fleet will return active with the rest of the navy. This will save us the need to build new ships, when the fleet needs another expansion (remember this players). - Start paying the debts. - Invest in our colonies, citizenry, industry and economic activities across EFS for ensure that we return to the previous economic growth pre-war.

The temporary war taxes will no longer be levied.
Two financial issues must be discussed, however:

1.Mothballing the fleet - the more we let go of, the easier it'll be on our budget, but it'll mean those ships won't be ready to respond to any emergencies.
A.Small reduction in capacity(20% reduced upkeep)
B.Medium reduction(40%)
C.Major reduction(60%)
2.Investment - the current rate of growth of our economy is estimated at eight percent every year. If we want to increase that through government investment, we'll be spending money that would otherwise be going towards paying off our debt or we may even increase it with a larger investment. The projected net balance for his year is around 100 Million - investing any more than that will mean taking on another loan.
A.No investment, focus on repaying what we owe already
B.Token investment - 50 Million
C.Small investment - 100 Million
D.Medium investment - 200 Million
E.Major investment - 400 Million

A sizable portion of the fleet is mothballed and kept in Selestine, reducing the required maintenance. Investment by the national government into development projects is kept on the safe side, just a new spaceports and two new power stations really.
War loot and reparations we've received are tallied up, netting us 300 Million, a nice dent in the national debt.

It would appear that we have peace for a time at least - the alien powers to our galactic north have caused us no troubles these past six months. The first few adventurous explorers and merchants have begun travelling there to seek business opportunities, knowledge and fame.

Our latest development is focused on improving effective speed and maneuverability for ships in space - this is done through the improvement of our gravgen technology, allowing it to be more easily installed, including on smaller ships. This is combined with other design features that reduce the impact of acceleration and G-forces on the crew. In addition, better afterburners, secondary engines and side thrusters have been developing, taking from our studies of alien craft, allowing ships with modernized equipment to be more maneuverable, which is crucial in modern space age warfare.
In the Fleet statistics sheet, this is marked by a 0,5 increase to the Engines tab. This 0,5 improvement existed before but the same cost investment in new ships will grant better results now.

If you wish, you may have all vessels in our current fleet(and the designs for any future ships of the same class) upgraded with these new modifications - individually they are small bonuses, but together they add up to great effect. The cost for a full upgrade will be 150 Million.

We've upgraded the vessels in our fleet up to this new standard.

In space news, the Emir of New Dubai - Jaffar bin Halil al Maktoum - has paid an official state visit to the distant dictatorship of Ganesh, striking up agreements for trade and cooperation with the rogue state. Meanwhile, the Free Enterprise Pact, headed in this particular case by Morgansbank & Co, have signed a highly beneficial trade agreement with the Stareater Empire, granting their merchants special privileges not afforded to others. The fact that they have been trading with the United Federation for decades now seems to be no problem - in fact, it may be part of the reason why this agreement was made, as the FEP looks to become a proxy for trade and travel between the two warring giants. To that end, they have set up an outpost not far from Esterpels, naming the system they've chosen "Melite".

Something that has been in the works for a while has now finally gotten the proper political backing to proceed - making use of the current climate of mutual trust and cooperation and using our prominent role in the war to boost our prestige, our diplomats, joined by a board of merchant interests representing most major corporations in our nation, have managed to bring many of the smaller human nations to trade talks. In October of 2289 the negotiations ongoing on Selestine begin turning towards an even grander plan. Thus, in November, the Extrasolar Trade Union is established, with the following member-states: The Extrasolar Free State, the Pavonid Union, the Free State of Jefferson, Kippling Station, the Principality of Nobilo Viro, the Emirate of New Dubai, the Valhallan Republic, the Atlas Freedom Pact, The Order of the Just and Virtue Knights and the Khwarizmian Baathist Republic. Talks are still ongoing with the Islamic Republic of Al-Khalasi and representatives of the Mormon colony on Smith's World. Much of the essence of this union can be found in the name - it is comprised of states with little or no holdings in the Solar system, which to this day remains the central hub of all commerce in human space, the lifeblood of our homeworld Earth some may say. These are also states who for the most part favor a neutral foreign policy in relation to the struggles of the larger human factions and through this trade union a higher degree of independence from the nations of Sol is assured.
The EFS will stand to benefit from this in the long run, as it is a step towards a shift of power away from the Solar system. Our nation is no longer a minor power and our population is a good market for the varied goods that our new trade partners will be able to bring us. We shall all prosper thanks to this.

And thus, the 2280s have ended. You may now perform faction projects for the decade, what your faction has done in the years 2280-2289.
Personal projects and influence points have been scrapped. Your characters can still be a factor in these projects, of course and they can be the focus if you so wish. Instead of influence points, you can influence the difficulty of your desired project by laying out a plan of action for what you're trying to accomplish - if you explain to me how you are making use of assets already in your possession, the skills of an established character, the connections you've made, this can help lower the DC, which I determine on a case by case basis. Here is a broad overview of what faction project DCs are like, however - bear in mind, the scale of what you're attempting and the circumstances around it impact this. Continuing work on a previously started project also generally lowers the DC by one level.

DC 20 - A small or easy task concerning a few people or something on a more personal scale, things with flavor.
DC 40 - A standard development like the establishment of new facilities or a small improvement of existing assets
DC 60 - Minor innovation like a new product design, a notable improvement of existing asset
DC 80 - Major innovation, like new technology and other challenging feats that face some sort of resistance

Those of you who are in Executive positions may also do your government projects. Similar rules apply.

Over the years, the mining corporation has been making attempts at expanding in various ways, some having been more successful than others.

1. Most, if not, all of our metals are sold to refineries across our home system, as such it only makes sense to cut out the middle man and begin doing it ourselves. Establish a large metal refinery on the planet of Gaea.

2. Grow our fleet of mining ships, purchase a small fleet of the lighter mining vessels and send them out to mine asteroids.

3. Our titan class mining ship is the lifeblood of the company and as such needs to be protected at all costs. As such, begin measures to upgrade its defenses and arsonal immediately, to ensure its safety in more dangerous sectors of space.

PA Hercules Mk.I

During the late decades of the 2200, after a series of different attempts for different CEOs a new one reached the position in the Group. Someone that has all the cards to hold it and that was considered the best among the best to receive the position from the council. Edward Faragher, graduated with honors in advanced nano-mechanics at the Etar City National University. As well having a respectable working curriculum in the industry of infantry equipment.
Edward has worked towards the creation of a very complex, highly advanced and meant to not be mass industrialized armor.

It's made thanks to the great experience and knowledge accumulated by the Group during his existence, to the technologies developed by them and the ones buyed from others, with the data of the performances of group products during the Drazerii Punishment War, to recovered alien equipment and lastly with new experimentations..

It's model has been initially taken from a Knight, and enlarged slightly. It's more armored and thicker than it, with even another energy shield. Its strength, agility and speed have been advanced considerably from other products thanks to a new powerful exoskeleton, a system of advanced nano hydraulics across the whole product and boosters outside attached to legs and back. It's HUD, visor, sensors and electronics are supported by a new generation small computer. It's mainly moved by the power of a main energy engine as well a few secondary energy engines. Harsh conditions and temperatures are barely calculated as a problem for the PA, thanks to the Salasteel.
(other deston tech is integrated too)

The high quality is thought to be even for future marks, this will make every single Hercules PA take at least some months before being complete. As each one is made to have the highest standards possible, there must be not even an error or defect.
If the Valiant is for infantry, the Knight for heavy infantry, the Gryphon for assault, and the Spectre for stealth, the Hercules is made for the elite of the elite.

Now that the Syndicate's mining operations have been well established, it is time to think about further solidifying the self-sustainability of the main base on Selestine, which is now de facto a small city within the capital itself, dubbed by the capital citizenry as "Syndie town". All facilities will undergo an upgrade in an attempt to see them not only produce the necessities of the Syndicate, but also start producing an excess that can be then stockpiled in emergency reserve warehouses or export.

ESIA project: With the unity brought about from the victory in the recent war director Svetoslavski now feels that establishing amicable contacts with the secret services of the other nations in the ETU (Extrasolar Trade Union) is the next logical step. As a first step, a "Liaison officer program" is offered to all participants. Faction Project: Research mind expanding drugs
Good news everyone! Our top shadow scientists, having spent offensive amounts of money, hospitalized many a volunteer and abused every legal loophole there is have developed a wonderful new substance. It goes by the name of MED (Mind Expansion Drug).
According to our projections, a mentat injecting a dosage of this will see his brain go into overdrive, time seemingly slowing down for him as his psychic potential is unlocked. As for non-mentats, the science is not entirely clear yet.
True, there are some side effects. The duration of the effect is not long, it is only intended for responsible mentat use, it somewhat shortens the lifespan of the user, it is… quite addictive and it might inspire some… mental side effects. But that is an acceptable tradeoff when you look at the larger picture.

Ministry Project: Restoration of lost species
To promote faith in the future, a future our ancestors dreamed of, we shall use our vast powers of SCIENCE in a responsible manner, namely the cloning of long dead creatures.
From earth frozen mammoth carcasses are retrieved from deep in the tundra, and bones of woolly rhinos and sabretooths are bought from museums, even neanderthal bones are purchased.
Then, we fire up the cloning wats, with plenty of green bubbly goo and flashy lights.
The results of this science shall be loosed upon Gaia, the wilds there expected to soon be way cooler than ever before.

These past 10 years have not been idle ones for the company of Gallagher-Volk.
The Tawagata system, far from being the second-largest, by a factor of the population, in our state, is also the gateway too the outer colonies of the Agripina system and the wider frontier.
As this is the case, Gallagher-Volk has decided that the lack of a proper orbital shipyard, as seen in Dagda and Selestine, will simply not do.
As such, the company has invested in building another of these mighty stations in the orbit of the planet Nigels World.
InnerSpace3, like its brother stations InnerSpace1 and 2, shall be equipped to refit and repair travelling ships as well as build new ones. InnerSpace-3, however, shall be constructed with updated design techniques implemented allowing for work to be done to a higher quality and quicker, as befitting the Gallagher-Volk Brand.
The usual amenities, as found aboard InnerSpace1 and 2 will also be present, providing a last bastion for travellers heading into the frontier, but given how close InnerSpace3 is to this frontier, it has also been equipped with an assortment of defence stations; Blue Lasers, shields and Missiles are the names of the game.
With InnerSpace3's completion, the frontier of the Free sttate is forever secure!

A contract is made between Ilmarinen Industries Incorporated and Gallagher-Volk.

1.Gallagher-Volk will provide two Elise class ships, one dedicated to metal refinement and manufacturing/industry and a second ship dedicated to hydroponics/cattle with a small mercantile sector built inside. Both ships will have increased offensive and defensive capabilities than the standard Elise class ship.

2. In the future, III will be able to buy ships at a reasonable discount.

In return, Ilmarinen Industries Incorporated will follow these terms.

1. Metal, both raw and processed will be sold at a much cheaper rate to Gallagher-Volk.
2a.While serving as Admiral, the three ships can be conscripted to war, but still under the command of III. Repairs will from battle will be covered by both parties.
2b, Whether admiral or not, all ships will protect Gallagher property with due villegence if near, and if property should be under siege, will come to aid immediately.
3. The 3 ships and any further ones that are provided by Gallagher Volk will exclusively stop at their space stations for repairs and refuelling, within reason. (Distance mostly.)

Business is booming - as one of the first private groups to acquire a Titan, you began raking in profits that were used for the establishment of a large metal refinery on Gaia, which would in turn feed your company's further growth. Ilmarinen is the principal provider of metals on Gaia today and exports what isn't sold locally to Selestine or its orbital works.
In the 70s you invested in expanding your fleet, eventually reaching seven small-mid sized mining ships. The finest pickings in the Eterani system for asteroid mining have either been exhausted or claimed by this point, so these ships are fitted with hyperdrives and sent out to other systems, chiefly those without permanent settlements.
Desiring to ensure the security of your Titan, you've seen to upgrading it extensively - gravity generation, modern engine systems, a shield generator, repair drone modules, better reactors, optimized internal storage space to make room for weapon systems, which include point-defense turrets covering every possible angle of attack, a Swarmer missile launcher and several midsized coilguns. An onboard arsenal is also installed which gives the crew access to modern weaponry, but leans primarily on autonomous defense systems, including turrets, shields and combat bots. The ship's command center is upgraded to give it better defense capabilities as well, expanded monitoring across the vessel and better external sensors and communication devices. Last, but not least, a modern AI has been installed to help the crew with all of its needs, be it opening doors, accessing remote systems or managing defenses. This modernization has resulted in a small decrease in its economic capabilities, but a massive increase in its combat strength. Profits from across the decade have more than made up for the investment you put in.

The ephedral gland integration project has been completed. After having the gland itself implanted, it is connected to an bioaugment module that allows the human user to essentially switch between adrenaline and ephedrine, integrated into a wider biostimulant upgrade on the body that boosts the effectiveness of both of these natural stimulants and regulates their production in the body. Work has begun on research into improved bone density and the search is on for genetic code that would help the brain work faster and better - this will require more projects or government aid to be accomplished.

He took a vacation off work to travel to old Eurasia, visiting the Himalayas where one of his books claimed he would find a way. This only led to more travels back and forth as he trekked through the last jungles of Earth, sought wisdom among the Sufists and even went to Federation space. Though certainly wiser than before, the secret of immortality and soul transfer eludes him yet.

Development of the Hercules was costly and difficult. Along the way, there were some failures and setbacks. And casualties, in that one incident we try not to speak of. The worst, however, was not an incident - it was directed sabotage. Infiltrators, including a traitor on the inside (One of the senior engineers no less!) not only stole large amounts of data from the Deston group, they torched what they could on their way out, overpowering the security teams - it was a Christmas Eve of 2289 and few were expecting an attack.
Despite all these setbacks, the Group recovered, used backup databases to resume their work and had the first prototype operational a couple of weeks later. The dream is not dead, but the ones who tried to kill it have escaped justice - for now. The final product should be finished before 2290 is done.
>>4557437
New hydroponic farms, chemical laboratories, 3-D printing workshops and vehicle repair facilities pop up across Syndie town even as the old ones are improved and brought up to modern industrial status. The emergency reserve warehouses are established deep underground, the experience of modern war having provided plans for facilities that can withstand orbital bombardment. Should war come to Selestine once more, the Eterani syndicate will be ready to weather the storm.
The intel sharing program did not pick up at all, however. This can be attributed to the fact that the trade union has been for existence a mere couple of weeks and trust has not been built up so deeply. The only other nation to agree to some exchange has been the Pavonid Union, which has been fairly close to us diplomatically for some time.

The success of the MED is what you may call a "Subjective matter" or "Topic of debate". Users have found it quite enjoyable while the effect lasts, which varies from subject to subject, but generally can be measured as 5-15 minutes in realtime. MRI scans show the brain truly does go into overdrive and the users experience time itself differently, to them the experience feels like it lasts far longer - or at the very least it is quite full of sensations for its duration. The substance is very addictive, however and with the short duration and long withdraw it's also very easy to get hooked on. Serial abusers see their brain tissue degenerate, their lifespan shorten. While they are on MED, they will continue feeling good and experience positive stimuli. Once they're off, however, that's when things go bad as they will have aftershocks. The happy visions from before turn dark and horrifying and the user knows that they must either simply grit their teeth and endure this for hours (which feel like days or weeks) or once again take some of the sweet, sweet medicine.
It is a dangerous drug indeed, this MED. Were its secrets to escape the laboratories, it may bring much ill to public health.

The Ministry of Culture has a better go at its experiments. Acquiring large tracts of land near the polar regions of Gaia, they set to work on cloning ancient species fro Earth to bring back the Ice Age. This is not unheard of - the planet Disney World has several massive reserves showcasing the wonders of science, ancient, long-lost Earthen species having been brought to life and given sanctuaries, environments fit for their habitation as there once were on Earth. So it is on Gaia as well now, where an extensive Ice Age reserve is established, with discreet methods of observation being available for the public across the reserve and more hands-on safari tours being also conducted where possible. A great attraction to be sure, both the people of the EFS and the workers in the Ministry are happy with the result!

Innerspace 3 is established - bigger, better, faster, stronger, it brings the best of Gallagher-Volk space engineering to the nation's frontier. Economic activity in the region sees an increase as a result of this investment. The new systems are given a proper field test and, with the profits soon being made, are integrated into stations 1 and 2, bringing them up to par as well - modern defense systems, comms, AI assistance, integrated gravity generation on board (which can be regulated to not affect any construction or repairs being done in the outer parts of the station if need be) all make life better and work easier in space.

The Social City Act on the other hand does not go as well as Matthew had hoped. This is because, despite the name suggesting it, the plan was not one provided with its own budget by the government - it was a program that used the (admittedly greatly expanded) funds of the Ministry. The dream of affordable and luxurious homes would not come so easily, however. The massive growth of the nation's population has seen the Migration Directorate grow its own bureaucracy as well, as it had to handle millions of immigrants arriving every year - helping them find workplaces and homes to live in, integrating them in society, overseeing their path to citizenship. Even with the expansion of the Directorate, the sheer scope of their work has meant that most of their time and budget still goes to providing the bare necessities - that at least worked for the most part as the poverty levels, which in the decade's beginning were steadily climbing, have stabilized.
Nevertheless, the plan did go through to an extent - only it ended up being something of a mess. The best of these new homes, truly luxurious, would be far from affordable and a media investigation revealed that there was corruption in the Directorate's ranks as these homes would 'coincidentally' be provided to friends and family members of Directorate staff. Those homes that were truly being given to the wider masses were not as spacious, comfortable or durable as advertised - they were often rushed jobs, using subpar construction material, offloaded to more inexperienced work crews. This has caused a small public scandal, though nothing so far implicates Mister Gallagher himself.

FP: The Calibas Corporation makes strides to enter the fields of biology by setting up a research and development company for it called Selestine Biotics. The major project will be towards studying and genetically altering strains of mycelium fungi. The goal is to see if they can further develop their symbiotic relationship and possibly develop an interconnected relation with other plant life using the Peripheral nerve cells.

Executive project: The Army Special Forces Section

Formed from 200 of the best soldiers of the Free States Army. The Special forces Section
are elite squads available for important missions to the state, and critical war objectives for the army. SFS forces can be made available for the ESIA if it requires heavy support.
Their training will ensure they are highly adaptable and efficient by training in many different VR scenarios and in many training grounds across the EFS.
Their equipment kit will make use of the cutting edge technologies available to the state in the fields of power armor, personal shielding and personal weapons.

I'll do these projects tomorrow (And one for the Fleet Admiralty, currently NPC'd), but as the decade is over and the term of the current ministers has ended, a motion has once more been raised by members of the National Assembly, with support from the Liberty Bell Caucus - they move that 5 year term limits be set for the high executive offices of the nation.

What position will you express (and thus incline your own "Friends in Congress" to support):

A.Set a 5-term limit - ALL PROJECTS will now be done every five years instead of 10, along with appointments
B.Reject the motion - things stay the same

In studying the technology of the United Federation, the Ministry has brought better laser weaponry to the table - namely the standard X-Ray Laser Emitter or X-Laser, its destructive power is notably greater than the widespread "Blue" lasers used across human space.

Project Light Switch reaches a breakthrough of a sort, in cooperation with Kayub Eterani's private research project: They have successfully created a device that allows them to feed a star mass by injecting it with hyperfuel. The Aquila, repaired, optimized and automated, is used to briefly enter a star and expell hyperfuel within it, exiting quickly to preserve system integrity. Conducted on a low-mass, low-temperature star, this allows its mass to increase over time. Tests and projections show that if the scale of the operation can be increased - which will require a very large amount of hyperfuel or some better method of conducting this injection - the star will certainly enter a thermal runway and, in the case of this star, likely cause a helium flash, which is a natural course of its evolution that would nevertheless take around a billion years from the current point for the William star, which is still the primary testing site. The runs that have been conducted already have definately shortened that timer by some millions of years at the very least - this does not yet lead to any practical effect, but from a scientific perspective it is quite exciting for the researchers involved, owing to its association with [REPORT REDACTED BEYOND THIS POINT].

In government documentation, Celestine Biotics is listed as a subsidiary of the Calibas Corporation, established in 2287. With a fairly-straightforward plan in mind, the Marshall oversees the establishment of the FSA's SFS. The Special Forces Section of the Free States Army is made up the cream of the crop and its soldiers receive the finest in custom equipment, augmentation and training. At present they are not specialized in any particular field of action, instead being an elite jack-of-all-trades unit that can be used in every familiar traditional combat environment and expected to perform above the merits of even our highly-professional army. They're the best of the best around, they can outfight marines in space as well as wrestle army grunts on the ground.

With extreme diligence and decades of experience of his own, the Fleet Admiral has seen to it that the lessons of the recent war are firmly imprinted and will be remembered for years to come. After a small reorganization of Admiralty staff, a new campaign of recruitment for officers and promotions among veterans expands the ranks. The Jack Rabbit war games off 2289 were conducted brilliantly, accomplishing the goals set by the Fleet Admiral - training a new generation of capable middle and low ranking fleet officers, capable of both following orders well and taking the initiative on their own when cut off from their superior commanders.
A great deal of analysis was put into the minute details of naval operations - studies were made into the performance of crews on campaign, in battle and during exercises. Notes were made of issues that needed fixing, which resulted in new drill patterns. Extended combat and movement in space requires the crew to be at the top of their game, with rotations for shifts available so that the fleet is not worn down by exhaustion. Most crewmen are specialists who occupy specific positions on the ship, focusing on one or two tasks - in the event of a boarding attack, hull breach, accidents and a myriad of other situations, a key crewmember may be killed or incapacitated, which can strain a ship's fighting capacity - to mend this, a system of overlapping training is implemented to ensure that every crewman on the ship can be replaced by at least two others on their position if the need arises.
With seeds sown, the benefits you will reap in the foreseeable future are a bonus to your crew quality and leadership - now the Free State Space Fleet can boast the highest level in both of those in human space. Only individual elite formations of the Eurasian and Syndicate fleets can hope to rival the standard set with our Interstellar Fleet Traditions.

The following positions are up for appointments by the National Assembly. The terms of office now last 5 years.

Fleet Admiral: Hawkins has expressed his wish to remain in post for one more term, after which he plans to return to teaching in the Academy. His feat of arms during the Battle of Boek, where he was injured in close quarters battle, has earned him some fame and quickly drawn support from some members of the Assembly (1 NPC vote).
Migration Director: Veteran Bureaucrat and former Assembly member Lee Wu Song has stepped up to seek support for the position. She has been a vocal critic of the corruption within the bureaucracy and indirectly put blame on Union Gallagher II for the failure of the Social City Act. This has given her support from both some old personal friends in the Assembly and elements of the Liberty Bell Caucus. (2 NPC votes)
Minister of R&D: A mechanical engineer, career politician and member of the Liberty Bell Caucus, Bill Nellson has stepped forward. He spent only a short amount of time in the Ministry and the only personal scientific achievement of his is a kind of plasteel gear. Besides being a minarchist, he is also a known xenophile who wishes to study and adopt more Federation technology. (1 NPC vote)

Solar Marshall, ESIA Director and Minister of Culture are the three other big appointed positions - no notable candidacies have been put up yet.

Plan for Jack Rabbit and Algol, and new vow gates

Jack Rabbit and Trusted Defense have been for long systems of the EFS. With this plan we will revaluate them and ensure they become more habitated and further contribute to the nation.

First of all we will ask to our fellow AES members of ICS and Valhalla, if they want to help us create this vowgates (improving between us trade and communication, and dividing the construction costs) :

- One from Algol - Zedong - Valhalla
- One Oz - Vinnitsa

In the case of Jack Rabbit, we will expand our mining activity in the moons and extraction in the gas giants. We will also establish new colonies both in moons and in trade space stations. Jack Rabbit is also ideal for research and some naval training, so we will build facilities for those areas. On a minor note it can be also revitalized with space sports between spaceships, in particular space races between swift and agile star fighters. The old FTL comms station will receive major attention becoming larger and advance.
(Jack rabbit becomes more populated, and grows on his own, more productive and we gain more resources. Plus some tourism for space sports. And navy/scientific use)

In the case of Algol we will build in it a trade station that will also be a settlement. Here trade from Valhalla, Zedong and Engels can enter in the EFS.
(Algol receive a growing pop, it has some minor production and it becomes a trade route of sort for us)

Terry Konishi has announced to candidate to Minister of Culture. He is mainly interested in working more towards the national festivities of the nation, ensuring they become far better than now and bring more tourism, as well more settlers.

Acreon (Avalon systems incorporated) can not post in 4chan at the moment so he sent his project and roll in discord:

Faction:Avalon industries while looking for ways to bring its mechs and new products to more markets start designing its very own first ship design called a "dropship". The dropship is an armored and lightly armed unit capable of flight both in atmospheric and spacial environments to bring whatever cargo is necessary to the customer.

Rolled 84

Result: The Avalon Dropship Mk. I is developed and refined after internal trials and limited test runs (including a small deployment test on Biktaka III during the war). Its plasteel armor and shield emitter give it excellent defenses for its size and it comes equipped with a few laser mounts as armaments. The vessel is fast and maneuverable and has a small pilot's compartment as the only space for a crewman - and even that is optional, as the autopilot function can be a reasonably reliable alternative. The space inside the dropship is optimized to fit in as many mechs as possible, with storage space for reserve energy cells, spare parts and ammunition as necessary. Maintenance drones can service the mechs, though proper repair facilities are always prefered. With all of these features, this Dropship is a great product that sees interest abroad as well as at home, its abilities allowing it to act as autonomous deployment platforms, allowing a strike force to be deployed quickly where needed with all the necessities for combat.

An expansion into our more neglected systems is being enacted.
The Algol system is hazardous by its nature - the three stars of Beta Perseus produce x-ray and radio flares that are disruptive to communications at times. Trusted Defense is now a station that combines the functions of transit hub, anchorage and observatory. Our scientists are now able to predict the flares and warn ships accordingly.
Jack Rabbit will be home to small mining companies, research stations, training facilities and the like - no major settlements and cities, but rather a cluster of varied activity.
Peacetime, improved traffic and stable economic factors (including private entities like Ilmarinen) have been a positive influence on our mining sector, currently experiencing a boom cycle.

In Space News:
-After a "minor insurrection" on Gralgar, the Imperial Crown Princess has announced an expansion of the peacekeeping activity in the area and its "New involvement in civil administration". The United Federation has decried this as a de facto annexation of Drazerii space. Representatives of Bepsico have stated that the imperial peace that has been imposed has allowed them to invest in new opportunities in that sector of space, which will promote economic devlopment for all.
-The Valhallan Republic has broken out of its diplomatic isolation and has received widespread international recognition by now, joining the Human Alliance.
-Leaked documents show that Eurasian diplomats had been courting both the Islamic Republic of Al-Khalasi and the Khwarizmian Baathist Republic, nudging both to conflict with the other, promising support in return for future alignment with Eurasia. This diplomatic blunder has prompted closer relations between Al-Khalasi and the United Cities of America on one hand and the Khwarizmians warming to the Syndicate on the other. The Eurasian President, Simon Sarkozi, has resigned following this debacle.

FTL interdiction technology has been studied and adopted by our researchers. It is an application of gravity generation technology, its output increased many times over from what is commonly used on ships. It generates just enough of a gravitational field to disrupt warped space travel whilst also remaining reasonably ergonomical.
A simple form of FTL blocking would simply be a larger gravity generator that would extend a field beyond the individual ship or station that is housing it - standard generators are designed to cover just enough space for the vessel to fit in and no more. Larger generators can further be adjusted to project a gravitational field through our newfound methods of spatial manipulation. The actual gravitational pull exerted is less than 0.1 g. This allows the gravity well to affect a much larger area, quite necessary for the realities of outer space. All major alien powers employ ships that carry one or more gravity well projectors and these are most often support ships, as the structures take up a non-insignificant portion of the ship's capacity in both size and power. Vessels of a light cruiser class or larger are required to field projectors. A ship affected by such a field can not enter hyperspace and must first escape it. This leads to a complex kind of chase in space. If the course of a vessel travelling at FTL speed can be reliably predicted, the projection of a gravity well onto the right realspace point can be used to trap and force a vessel out of hyperspace. This is not yet practical for us, however, as our scanning and detection technology is not up to par to the task for us to be able to accurately track and predict such movements at the moment.

The EFS military elite

Solar Marshall Javier has left time ago a military dossier for a new military initiative, the creation of a small elite military group at the service of the state. One that will protect it s foundations at all costs. It will receive an elite training, as well highly quality gear and equipment (that can be mod to their preferences).

The Free State Honor Guard

An elite formation of guards that will protect important monuments, buildings and government personal.
Specialized in protection at all costs at the risk of their own lives if necessary, and in handling difficult scenarios against their mission. Above their armor they have some ornamental decorations (laurels and human symbols often related to freedom) and clothing, at their back on an attached mantel the symbol of the EFS, with the classical 6 spheres and circle. They usually carry small smg s, shotguns, carabines, revolvers and short swords. Of course they use other weapons as well, and have access to land and air vehicles.
The Free State Honor Guard has even a cavalry section, made from our indigenous animals from Nigel 'World (the famous green-blue Nigellious, a very affectionate and intelligent animal) as well some horses.

The Guard will be present in EFS feasts, state manifestations, parades and marches.

Some models will have battery after battery of missiles, others will have single giant laser cannons.

It seems an investment in our junior colonies is in order, but the question at hand must be - how big of an investment should we make?

A.Small (100M) - Whatever's on the top of the queue for each of these, a hospital complex here, factory works there, the usual.
B.Medium(200M) - General modernization of infrastructure and laying the foundations for natural growth
C.Large(400M) - Expansion of facilities and infrastructure network
D.Huge(800M) - Make these worlds the primary focus of our current growth - huge resource and infrastructure works, public housing, tax reliefs and the like should let them grow much faster.

A Study on the aliens of Agrippina:

Agrippans show a fascinating degree of diversity in their culture across the continents of the two planets they inhabit. They can be found living in desert caves and jungle tribes, building primitive agricultural villages or wandering the steppes as nomads tending to domesticated reptiles and birds, hunting the surviving (but seemingly endangered) megafauna. In the fertile river valleys of Agrippina I they have even erected cities of stone and made tools and weapons of iron and steel with which they wage war upon their foes. One of these kingdoms appears to be home to craftsmen capable of producing very durable crucible steel which has given it a dominant position on their continent in the last few centuries.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h9rcGwkYR8E
Across their varied cultures they have certain similarities, particularly in their faith as they erect monuments that depict fantastic creatures which some of our anthropologists have described as similar to dragons or dinosaurs. Excavations show at least one case of bones belonging to now extinct species matching these descriptions. Many Agrippans hold a keen spiritual interest in the heavens, with more than ten tribes across both planets having similar creation myths of great dragons of the stars laying eggs upon the ground from which wingless spawn were born, the ancestors of the people now living there. The more advanced civilizations have developed astronomy, some have complex calendars and even observatories.
Since our first colonists began settling the system over a decade ago, contact with the natives has been inevitable. Some incidents of armed clashes were reported years ago already and the Agrippina Antropological Society has had its fair share of troubles in keeping overly eager amateur explorers away from the reptilians in these new worlds. Urban myths among the colonists speak of cities of gold and diamond in the jungles. Even with the best efforts of the AAS, the human presence on their home worlds has already started to have an effect on the natives, even those who have not been in direct contact with us - our spacecraft fill the skies with new lights and news spread slowly but surely from one group to another of fabled scaleless travelers from the sky.
The only thing more worrying - and so far kept secret from the general public - is the data from genetic testing conducted on these aliens. They appear to be greatly related to the Zian, though distinc enough to be called a separate species by some (it remains a topic of contention in the AAS). When and how the Agrippans emerged as a sentient group is not precisely known yet - some in the AAS believe they should be allowed to delve deeper into native grounds to study them further. We've managed to keep a lid on this knowledge so far and we've had no visitors from the Federation coming to this system, but that is also an inevitability - sooner or later, the Zian will have questions for us.

A large investment will mean new spaceports, gene labs, refineries, alloy foundries for the outer colonies. Their growth rate is expected to go higher than ever, though it would take many years for them to hope to surpass the older colonies.

AES Humanitarian Intervention in Kolony 8
With the admittance of our new members, it is time that the AES takes action.

The situation on Kolony 8 is a dire one for its people, it is best if we begin sending aid and food in order to help its civilian populace.

We shall also get a better idea of just what is happening on the planet politically and intervene if the situation is desperate enough

Kolony 8 is perhaps one of the least desirable places in human space to live in. The air is full of dust, smoke and toxic fumes. The ground is barren, where there's soil to be found it is poor. Great open pits dot the landscape, some of them from exhaustive mining, others the result of orbital bombardment or combat on the ground. The population, an uncertain number between two and four million, struggle to survive, locked in a many-sided war that has been going on for decades at varying intensities. The planet receives few official visitors from outside - it's mostly smugglers and independent merchants bringing in weapons, drugs or food and buying up the metals and precious volatiles mined on the surface at cheap prices. As a former Black Sun prison colony, the larger part of the population here are the various undesirables from across the Reich's holdings - and, by now, their descendants. Small amounts of outcasts from around the sector have also found a home away from the laws of man here and it is rumored that one of the last pirate bands in human space has its base on this dustbowl.
A community of settlers from the former Reich, the former freemen, managers and overseers of the colony, still maintain a presence, defending the domed cities of Berun and Freiburg from the various outlaws, warlords and the rising power of the United Revolutionary Front, led by one Scholar Venari. It's a violent existence under the acid rains and in the smoggy valleys home to most of the population.
Recon conducted by the Extrasolar State Intelligence Agency shows some interesting tidbits previously unknown to us. Over the last five years this planet has in fact been the site of a proxy war - elements of the Valhallan government have been discreetly supporting the domed cities, sending supplies and mercenaries their way, whilst the Revolutionary Front has had a similar deal struck with the ICS. Neither side seems to be backing down or holding any major advantage, though most of our observers believe that in the long term the Front will most likely prevail given their numerical superiority and the far greater resources the ICS can throw at them.

Our humanitarian mission has arrived in the system, ready to set up - it's made up of transports along with escort ships and a marine regiment in tow. The question now is, how should they go about their task?

A.Set up separate locations to provide independent aid to the main population centers, remaining uninvolved in their conflict otherwise
B.Favor providing aid to the Front https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_5X2BvMS4yQ
C.Favor providing aid to the cities https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AVDq4-vuA5Q
D.Set up a humanitarian zone where aid will be distributed, but pressure the locals to stop their conflict lest they lose access to our aid https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jg3sEE18WsE

>FP 2280-2289: The Cyber temple redone
After the horrible terror attack last decade, we have not given up on the dream of our digital world and providing digitalized immortality for those that want it. Security will be tightened, drastically. The Cyber temple facilities will be turned into a literal fortress and the data servers, on which the conciousnes of many is run, will be moved deep underground in an undisclosed location. The central facilities and servers will be completely inaccessible to organics and exclusively maintained by robots and AI avatars. Once these safety upgrades are implemented we will try to restore public trust and get old but especially valuable people to digitalize themselves. We want as few intellectually valuable people as possible to die. Preferably everyone with a PhD would transfer themselves into the cyberspace at 120 years old and continue to teach and benefit our society indefinitely or until they decide to discontinue their conciousnes. Make AI avatars running the conciousnes of professors, who's physical bodies have long does, a common sight on our planets.

We need to try and put pressure on the local powers to cease their conflict. If our aid can help sway the locals we can set up a foothold on the world to bring some level of peace.

A great amount of resources had to go into the rebuilding of the cyber temple - almost enough to bankrupt you, in fact. Though its security is up to par now, it is a shell of the vision that once was for it. To make up for the great costs you had to hike up the costs. The bad experience of the terror attack from before - and the scare that came when a follower of Hind attempted (and failed) to repeat his work - have also put off the wider public from the idea at least for now. Those who undertake the procedure are the rich and eccentric primarily for now and it takes some time until your own corporate finances are stabilized. The time may not be quite right yet for this great vision to succeed.

The hope of our government will be that our aid can not just alleviate the material situation on Kolony 8, but also lead to an end to hostilities on that troubled world. Should this succeed, it will no doubt bring prestige to our nation and strengthen our position among our allies and human space in general, as well as draw in a new friendly world to our side.
We will require some time until we know if we are successful with this endeavor.
There will be another DC check to see how well this goes in one year from now.

In a move similar to our own, it appears that the United Federation of Free Worlds is extending a hand towards our own Alliance of Extrasolar States and proposing programs of expanded cultural, political, scientific and military exchange, with easier travel and guest permits for citizens on all sides. A similar deal has already been struck with Eurasia. You negotiate on behalf of the Extrasolar Free State only, but your position will likely influence the junior allies you have.

>On the Federation's offer:
A.Accept - Improve relations with the Federation, more trade and advancements; Receive more influence from the Federation and lower relations with the Stareater Empire
B.Decline

Arc colonization Vessel .
Made in a similar design of the ancient pyramids made by early civilizations the vessel will improve on the colonization technologies that were made available to mankind during its early forays into settling new worlds.

In addition to the kind of facilities that ships such as the Vagabond had when it set out the Arc vessels will have extra facilities for processing and manufacturing, research labs for studying new worlds they set down on, seed vaults and animals pens for agriculture, equipment to set up a planetary star ports, hangers for drone fighters, and a small armory to form a militia in case the ground position turns hostile. With these tools we can quickly expand out and develop on new worlds or assist with building up on worlds already settled.
