You are Nakashiri Koharu, a shinigami-in-training with a secret mission to find and infiltrate a conspiracy within the Gotei 13. It is the last month of the first academic year at the Shin’ō Academy, after which the yearly shinigami evaluation takes place across students of all years. Those who have passed the basics and with enough levels in Zankensoki get to graduate. Of course, those with the highest grades get prioritized first when filling the ranks of the 13 divisions.

At least, that’s what it would be if nothing else affected it all.

It’s pretty much an open secret those from noble families get prioritized depending on their status regardless of their actual skill, and that division captains like to ‘pluck’ students right off the academy seats to privately teach and raise them to become seated officers, or even future replacements as lieutenants and captains.

However, it is in the end the academy instructors that have to approve graduation. One of the key requirements is the field-trip to the living world to practice soul burial, along with many other details related to being assigned there.

That’s what you have in front of you right now. You are standing at the large plateau where the official Seireitei Senkaimon is located, along with the rest of the first class students and others who haven’t gotten a passing grade for this, like Izumi.

Instructor Konuma Inejirō is standing in front of the Senkaimon, in charge of this whole field trip. Unlike normal however, there’s also a large man with a somewhat hilarious bucket-like helmet, and two others. You make out from the whispering that it’s Captain Komamura of the 7th Division, along with his Lieutenant Iba Tetsuzaemon, and the third seat, Asato Junichi.

Small-talk instantly takes over the students, with most of the boys getting worked up about Iba-senpai, the coolest shinigami in the whole Gotei 13, and most of the girls talking about the handsome Asato-senpai. The rest are all for some reason a little wary about this.

“Dear students,” Instructor Konuma shouts, silencing the chit-chat between students. “We have been honored by Captain Komamura and his division. Lieutenant Iba and 3rd-Seat Asato will accompany us to the world of the living to oversee the field trip along with giving us their wisdom and insight. You should all feel honored.”

Captain Komamura then steps forward, speaking through his weird helmet.

“While I will not join you myself, rest assured that these two are the most capable my division has to offer. They have lived and survived through countless struggles and have upheld the honor of the Gotei 13 diligently.”

The Lieutenant and 3rd-seat both bow lightly to the students.

“Without further ado, make sure you get a hell butterfly so you won’t get lost on the way. Stick to the assigned groups of three and listen to senior members.”

“Isn’t this exciting?” Emika smiles beside you. You’ve been grouped together with her and Izumi, much to your surprise. Almost as if somebody has been watching you and with whom you’ve matched the best.

“Y-Yeah, I guess,” you respond.

“Yo,” Heizo pops out of nowhere, his zanpakutō on his shoulder.

“Huh? What are you doing here?” Emika asks, while Izumi is hiding behind you from being startled.

“I’m one of the seniors who’ll protect you, duh,” he responds with a cheeky grin, and leans over to right in front of her face. “So you can call me Heizo-senpai now.”

Welcome to a new thread of Advent Soul Quest!

>What is this?
A quest based on the setting of Bleach. Deviation from canon depends on the MC’s influence, and some other additions are to be expected as well.
>Who are we?
Tamaki Koharu, a former 10th grade (high schooler) trap training to become a shinigami of the Gotei 13 in Soul Society.
>When are we?
Currently it is end of Summer 1982, ~19 years prior to the events of canon.
>Dice? Challenge?
Prompted after deciding on an action. Usually 3d10, best of 3 (Bo3), against a set DC and sometimes a crit-DC. Write-ins may affect the DC as well. If a character stat (in the char sheet) is directly related to the action, it will substitute the lowest die in rolls if it is higher (will be always explained when prompted to roll).
>Updates?
So far it’s been 20 minutes per post at best. Generally I promise an update per hour at the very least. I post whenever I start writing, or if I’m held up for some reason. My timezone is UTC+2.
>I have questions!
Ask away and I’ll do my best to answer.
>What do?
Have fun, vote on what feels the best, roll some dice and chill.

“Protect us? You?” you ask blinking and then giggling. “Oh dear.”

“Huuh? What’s that?” Heizo turns from Emika towards you, poking your forehead. “You’ve still yet to beat me, you know.”

“That’s a completely different thing,” you push his finger away and cross your arms. “You’re a warrior, sure, but can you really protect anyone?”

Emika laughs at this. “Oh I’m sure he’ll do fine. Besides, he’s not the only one protecting us, as much as he’d love being the only one!” she teases Heizo, who whistles and looks away instead.

“What are you going to protect us from anyway?” you ask.

“T-T-That’d be h-hollows,” Izumi stutters behind you as she gets the courage to join the ‘ring’ you’ve formed among yourselves. “T-They’re notorious for suddenly a-attacking t-t-these f-field trips..”

“Yeah. We had a bunch in my first year too,” Heizo nods.

“So that means you’ve done this yourself already? Any… you know, tips?”

Heizo just laughs. “Not really, Koharu. Just do as instructed and show your skills.”

You roll your eyes. “Great, you’re sooo much help, it’s just amazing.”

Emika leans in to whisper to your ear. “He’d tell you if you praised him a little. Get him comfortable, you know, and he’ll become an open book.”

“What’s that?” Heizo narrows his eyes.

“I was just saying that I heard you beat a big hollow on your own field trip back then!” Emika gives him a poker-style smile.

“R-Really?” he laughs awkwardly. “Well it was a fine piece of work if I do say so myself! Got it distracted and BAM, I tore its mask to shreds!”

Emika winks to you with a smug expression of ‘see I told you so.’

This time the trip between the worlds is a far more pleasant one than when you journeyed to Soul Society from Osaka. With a hell butterfly to guide your way, you pass through a long corridor that looks like it’s from an old Japanese documentary. Finally you arrive in some desolate clearing with some abandoned buildings, but otherwise there’s a forest around and some mountains on the horizon.

Quite many tents have also been already set up around the area and your senses pick up a lot of barriers all around.

“This will be our base of operations for the duration of this field trip. Each team will get their own tent and you will be given their own schedule,” Instructor Konuma explains.

“We’ve prepared dummy artificial souls to populate the area, which will simulate recently deceased souls. You are to perform Soul Burial on them with your zanpakutō.”

“There are also dummy hollows roaming the area. They are by no means powerful enough to kill you, and have been developed to focus on survival and hunting the artificial souls. But beware, they are able to harm you.”

The students murmur among themselves about this, and Izumi especially looks terrified. You sigh, realizing there’s a high chance she’ll be more baggage than use during this field trip.

Instructor Konuma clears his throat, catching everyone’s attention. “Naturally that is why we have dedicated teams here to keep you safe. The barrier-team has put up wards around the area to keep us self-contained and to keep external threats away. But even if any slip by, the senior students are here to fend them off. Not to mention our 7th Division honorary guests. So rest assured, you are all in good hands.”

You, Emika and Izumi go to the tent designated for you. It's quite minimalistic, with just three bedrolls for sleep and a small container with rations and water.

“So let’s see,” Emika says, looking at the schedule that has been given to your group. “Our first ‘expedition’ into the forest is in about an hour. I think this is going to be exciting!”

“A-As long as we’re n-not attacked,” Izumi whispers, sighing.

Still nine years until Sailor Moon is first published
Promising her manga will actually do the trick very well, enough that you'll have a bit to strategise.

Well forming a strategy is almost pointless if we can't scout ahead to check the place so

“It’s better to just live with the idea that hollows might lurk around,” you sigh, “I mean, that’s why we’re here in the first place, to get practice for the real thing in a safe environment. I mean, it can’t get much safer than this, can it? We have senior students, we have those 7th Division top guys, and even Instructor Konuma himself is here.”

“I-I guess,” Izumi sighs, not entirely convinced. You exhale deeply yourself in a bit of frustration. You consider something which might come to bite you in the ass. You lean in to whisper in her ear.

“...If you get yourself together, I might get you some new manga.”

And just like that, Izumi’s eyes flare to life, her stutter disappears and she’s shaking you by your shoulders. “REALLY?! YOU WOULD REALLY DO THAT?”

Emika looks at you and Izumi with utter confusion.

“Y-Yeah,” you avert your eyes and scratch your cheek. Oh god, what did you get yourself into? How are you going to do that without leaving this area? You could theoretically also ask somebody to do it for you. Heizo is rebellious by nature, so he might not care about rules that much. On the other hand, you could be bolder and ask Instructor Konuma himself, in exchange for… something.

In the end, both are bad choices.

“Ohthankthereiō!” she squeals, but slowly her eagerness falters. She’s clearly still worried about this trip, but you do get the feeling that she actually has some drive now.

The rest of the minutes you have you spend by just thinking about the skills you all possess and how to apply them together. There’s just one problem: none of you know much anything about where to begin with teamwork, especially combat. You’re still greenhorns.

Once your free time is over, the three of you find the instructor.

“Alright, girls. Here’s a map with your patrol route on it. The task is simple, each one should find an artificial soul and perform soul burial on them. On top of that, you are to find and hunt down a dummy hollow with your group.”

Each one of you nod.

“You may go.”

The three of you simply walk for a while at the beginning of the forest to slowly go in. As much as you’d like to just use shunpo, Emika isn’t as fast as you, and Izumi… is Izumi. Which means no shunpo.

Still, with the forest comes a certain feeling of calmness, despite your reikaku warning you about hollow presences lurking around. It’s only when Emika pokes you that you refocus back to your actual senses.

“Koharu, what’d you think about the two 7th Division guys?”

“Huh?”

“You know, the two handsome ones that came to oversee the field trip.” she continues to poke, this time just verbally.

“U-Uh, this might not be the right time-”

“I-I think they’d go well t-together,” Izumi responds from behind, fumbling her hands together, a weird look on her face.

Oh no. It’s coming out.

“W-What?” Emika asks confusedly.

“S-She means that they look quite strong and nice together, right?” you glare at Izumi, to which she awkwardly nods and whistles.

“You two are funny,” Emika giggles. “But I meant them being here. I’ve heard that this is highly unusual. Do you think they’ve come here to maybe assess and recruit?”

You blink. That could be very much true. Every time somebody from the Gotei 13 has visited the academy, it’s been about recruitment first and foremost.

“For sure,” you nod. “Now that you mention it, I would be surprised if they didn’t.”

“That would also mean that were somebody to be flashy and show off, they might get noticed by them,” Emika muses.

As the three of you think about it for a moment, Emika continues.

“I am curious though, if we return to what you thought I asked you,” she smiles wickedly at you.

“Uh-oh,” you start sweating.

“This whole year you’ve not shown any interest in anyone, like some sort of monk. Who is your type anyway? Come on, you can tell us!”

“Y-Yeah!” Izumi chimes in.

Shit, they got you cornered.

“Girls… focus. We’re not here to gossip,” you groan. Both look visibly disappointed but don’t say anything. “But if you really must know, there might be someone. Not telling you anything though.”

You decide to just get on with this thing and close your eyes, focusing on your senses once more. Locating artificial souls proves to be quite easy, especially in this forest where there’s hardly anything else, besides the hiding dummy hollows.

The first artificial soul you find is an older woman who can’t let go of her children and grandchildren. Were this a real case, she’d most likely be anchored to her family, following them as a ghost. Both you and Emika push Izumi to take care of this one, lightly guiding her through the steps. To your surprise, she manages to calm the old lady enough to perform the soul burial correctly.

The second one acts like he’s just been in a bad car accident, while he was trying to get to a hospital where his wife’s giving birth. The acting is so good, that you get the feeling as if such memories were really planted in this artificial soul. You’re lightly considering just how ethical this would be by the standards of the living world. Alas, this isn’t within the power of the living world anymore. You let Emika take this one, and she does her best to soothe and calm the artificial soul down, even promising to take him to his wife, before performing soul burial.

The last and third one is a child, reminding you a lot of Tokiko-chan.

“M-Mommy? Where’s mommy?” the little boy cries. You come closer to him and kneel down. Inside you feel your emotions stirring, especially as his cries resonate with those of your own early childhood, shortly after your own mother died.

You gently embrace the child, letting a single tear flow down your cheek.

“I will take you to mommy,” you say, letting go of him. “She’s waiting for you in a nice place.”

“R-Really?” the tearful eyes of the boy look into yours. You nod, and draw Naimen no Daiza.

“Do not worry, this won’t hurt at all,” you say and move the butt of your zanpakutō towards the boy’s forehead. The seal pattern sticks to his forehead and begins to glow, and the familiar magic works its way, leaving behind only a single hell butterfly to mark the boy’s passage to Soul Society.

You sigh and turn towards your two friends. “Well then, let’s- what?”

Emika and Izumi are both hugging each other and look like they’re about to cry.

“T-That was so touching..!” Emika tries to explain.

“K-Koharu, y-you’re too sweet..” Izumi nods.

You facepalm. “You guys… Aren’t we supposed to be emotionally neutral?”

With the soul burials done, there’s only one thing left to do, and that is defeat one of those hollow dummies. Considering that you’ve fought and defeated the ‘weak’ hollows back at Urahara’s basement, you think this should be a piece of cake.

Relying on your senses, you pick one of the hollow signals and move towards it. To get to one you can’t just walk anymore; it’s either run or shunpo. Problem is, Izumi gets exhausted with either, even if you go at Emika’s shunpo speed.

“Izumi, think about what I promised you. Only if you try and do your best though…”

Izumi’s eyes flare up, lit by motivation and she suddenly really does her best to keep up with you and Emika. It kind of scares you what potential she might have that she just hasn’t been able to access due to her… interests.

You get to the hollow dummy just in time, as it is about to charge at a fleeing artificial soul who’s screaming for help.

“Emi, get him to safety!” you shout, and use a flash step to get in front of the boar-like hollow, your zanpakutō locked against its mask. You’re unable to stop the monster’s momentum however, and your feet drag along the ground as the boar-hollow continues its path. Fortunately, just as you’re about to hit the artificial soul, Emika gets to him and grabs him out of the way.

With that, you disengage yourself.

“That’s our target now!” you shout to Emika and Izumi.

Just as you’re about to continue, you hear another voice, but a familiar one, and an annoying one at that.

“Hold it right there! That is OUR target!”

“Oh I am a pain? It’s not healthy to project onto others, street-rat.”

Looks like you are in a deadlock, and the boar-like hollow dummy is about to charge towards the artificial soul in Emika’s hands. You could just ignore Yukiko and her antics and just deal with the hollow yourself, especially if you’d release your zanpakutō, but that would defeat the purpose of teamwork training.

On the other hand, if you continue as you are, Yukiko might pull something that might endanger just about everyone.

If only there was a way to just remove her from this scene.

“Sure, whatever,” you sigh and wave her off, and then proceed with a flash step just in time as the boar-like hollow begins its charge. Your sword clashes against it, and you sense Emika moving to assist you… Izumi is taking care of the artificial soul instead now.

The boar continues to charge, pushing you with it as you stand between it and its prey. Emika begins chanting a familiar incantation.

“Ye lord! Mask of blood and flesh, all creation, flutter of wings, ye who bears the name of Man! Inferno and pandemonium, the sea barrier surges, march on to the south!" Emika shouts as she finds herself footing in the air using reishi platforms.

“Hadō #31: Shakkahō!” she finishes the incantation, and an orb of crimson red energy launches from her hands towards the hollow. It’s going to be done for sure!

Your senses however alert you that Yukiko fires off her own kidō spell, a ray of ice that deflects the red ball of destruction just enough away from the hollow, wasting the shot.

“If you think we’ll let you trash take our target just like that, you’re gravely mistaken!” Yukiko continues her tantrum. “I will NOT be disrespected by the likes of you!”

This is starting to frustrate you. There’s absolutely no point in this than for her to feed her pride. It’s clear she’s not going to give up on this hollow, and will do everything to hinder you.

You’re still getting pushed by the hollow swine, so you don’t have much time to think.

>Forget the hollow, it’s now your trio against Yukiko’s trio.

Okay. Screw trying to make this about teamwork. This whole thing wasn’t intended to have teams shit on each other, at least you sincerely hope so. You let more of your reiatsu push out and with a swift zanjutsu technique you lightly cut into the hollow as you push yourself downwards into a spin, while momentarily stopping the boar monster’s advance.

With your whole body spinning, you channel reiatsu into your right leg just as taught in hakuda, and land a dropkick onto the hollow’s mask, shattering it completely into pieces.

“N-No!” Yukiko shouts as she flash steps towards the disintegrating body, her sword ready. You block it, locking both zanpakutō together.

“Snap out of it!” you shout, letting anger creep into your voice. “You do realize how dangerous your behavior is?! If this were a real situation, you could’ve gotten us all killed!”

“You’re the dangerous one! Wild, unpredictable, unrefined!”

“What was that you told me before? It’s not healthy to project onto others?” you repeat her own words back to her. “If you were at all serious about this, you would’ve defeated the hollow already. I was faster and better, so I got the kill.”

“Get over it, crybaby,” you grit your teeth and push her away with your zanpakutō, both of you now standing across the field. Where the hollow dummy disintegrated now lies a black, round pearl.

“How DARE you! How DARE you talk to me like that!” Yukiko continues her tantrum, kicking the ground, as her two minions return to her sides, while Emika and Izumi stand a safe distance away from this whole thing.

“I dare because I can. If you want me to stop, then why don’t you do something about it? You are not frail, I’ve seen you fight. You’re not dumb, otherwise you’d never have cast a spell in your life. So what the hell is wrong with you and why are you obsessed with me?!”

This definitely struck somewhere deep within Yukiko, as she spends a moment trying to say something, yet no words come out. You feel as if she’s ready to attack you, but nothing ever comes.

“A low-born street-rat like you wouldn’t understand,” she finally retorts, turning her back to you, and begins walking away. “You will pay for this, mark my words.”

You sigh. “Yeah, right.”

On your way back you perform a few more soul burials just for good measure as they happened to be quite close. Were it not for your senses, you’d have easily missed all of them.

Instructor Konuma sits on a chair as you return, drinking some tea. When he sees you, he raises an eyebrow.

“What’s wrong girls? Why are you back?”

“Um, we’re finished.”

“Haa?” he tilts his head in confusion. “Wait, what? You’re serious?”

Instructor Konuma goes to a weird fleshy-looking thing with a weird TV screen on it, and looks over something, and his face starts sweating. Apparently they’re tracking the souls somehow.

“H-How the hell… how did you find so many of them? They’re supposed to be practically invisible unless one of the hollows attacks them!”

You shrug. “I’m good at sensing. They weren’t hard to find, especially if they were close.”

“A-And you defeated a hollow too?” Konuma continues to look at his screen.

“A boar-looking one!” Emika nods. “Though it was Koharu’s work… but in our defense, we were rudely interrupted by another team!”

“W-Well, why don’t you go back to your tent for now, heh?” Konuma awkwardly laughs. “I’ll come give you further tasks some time later.”

You overhear him mumbling something about doing half of the week’s tasks in just one day.

You tell the girls to go ahead, that you need some fresh air to clear your head, especially after Yukiko’s shenanigans.

“Um, Konuma-sensei,” you begin, scratching the back of your head.

“Hm?” he turns around from that weird machine. “What is it, Koharu?”

“You see, I was in the library one night, in the Culture Section, and I read something rather odd, with many pictures. It's called, as I understand it... manga.”

“I beg you pardon?” Konuma raises an eyebrow as he shifts his full attention to you now.

“Manga. I came across some, but there’s not much to go with,” you do your best to fake ignorance and curiosity.

Konuma looks like he’s partially sweating. “I'm not sure what you were reading, Koharu, but this is very dark stuff. Very dark indeed.”

“Which is why I came to you!” you laugh awkwardly, knowing that you struck gold. If this geezer knows about manga, and even reacts this way to it, there’s no way he’s innocent.

“Me?” Konuma scratches his neck while looking around to see if there’s anyone listening or watching. “Why me?”

“Well, I kind of guessed that you might know about this, maybe even read such things,” you give him a slight wink.

“I-I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he attempts to deny it.

“B-But Konuma-sensei!” you pout, giving him the cutest expression you can muster. “I-I saw you reading some back at the academy! The one with nake-”

“SHHHHHHHH!” Konuma closes your mouth quickly, while he’s looking around again, all paranoid. “I get it, I get it, just stay quiet, damn it!”

After a moment he let’s go of you and groans. “By the name of reiō… what are you aiming at, Koharu?”

You poke your index fingers against each other. “Maybe you know where to get, you know… newer manga? Purely for academic reasons?”

“I.. can’t, Koharu, that would violate so many laws!”

You pout again, sighing in fake resignation. “I understand, and I think others will too, hentai-sensei.”

Konuma’s expression is priceless.

“...Fine. I’ll get you some. But it will take a while. Just keep quiet about this, okay?”

You do a fake cheerful jump and thank him, before giving him a list of the exact manga that you’d like. You figured Izumi would especially like Cutie Honey, and you remember wanting to get your own hands on a newer one called ‘Stop!! Hibari-kun!’ back in Osaka. Something about a yakuza father and his crossdressing son.

“You know, I knew from day one that you’d turn things upside down. But going as far as blackmailing me? Oh what did I do to deserve this?” Konuma rests his head on his hands.

You just give him a fake innocent and nonchalant smile. “I’ll eagerly await the delivery, Konuma-sensei!”

After a solid social victory, you decide to stretch your legs and arms around the camp, to see if there’s anything interesting to offer, and if not, then just take a walk.

The evening has already set in, and the stars are visible in the sky. Some tents have their lamps lit, a sign that those teams are currently resting, while most of them are all dark. Some students are just out talking about this whole camp thing, while others are bored and are playing around with some dice.

You don’t really feel like going into any of the groups of people as they have their own thing going, but you stumble upon a girl who looks quite worried.

“What’s wrong?” you ask from behind her, scaring her. “Sorry, didn’t mean to startle.”

The woman sighs. “One of my teammates, he… he hasn’t returned yet from the forest,” she explains. “We got separated. It’s been hours!”

“It’s alright,” you put a palm on her shoulder. “Even if there’s any real danger, we’ve got the seniors here, right?”

“R-Right,” she sighs, but still looks unconvinced and… terrified?

“I’m Koharu,” you introduce yourself. “You can call me however you like. What’s your name?”

“R-Really? Koharu from the first class? I’m Honomi. It’s.. nice to meet you Koharu-chan.”

“Wait, you’ve heard about me?” you ask, scratching the back of your head.

“Y-Yup! They say you’re a genius!”

“Well, that might be a bit too much credit, heh,” you lightly chuckle.

“Did you really awaken your zanpakutō only six months in?” she asks.

“I did, but it wasn’t easy, believe me.”

After a little bit more of smalltalk, you get the feeling that something is still amiss. You saw what the dummy hollows are, they’re nothing like real hollows. So why is she so terrified?

“Honomi-san, what separated you and your team?” you ask cautiously.

She sighs, and looks back towards the forest. “We were chasing a hollow. But then it suddenly roared really loud, we couldn’t move, and charged my comrade deep into the forest. We couldn’t find him, so we returned, hoping that somebody else would find him.”

You narrow your eyes.

“I just.. wonder, are we r-really safe here?”

Suddenly, the camp’s alarm bell rings, and your senses pick up a nasty presence in the distance.

A proper hollow, and a strong one at that.

The camp is suddenly filled with light panic as students come out of their tents to figure out what’s going on. Instructor Konuma and the senior students are doing their best to round everyone up, especially those who are still in the forest.

This is extremely strange. You can sense the hollow clearly right now, along with the battle… Heizo is fighting it? Nonetheless, how could a hollow of that caliber escape notice? As arrogant as it might sound, you’re certain your sensing abilities are beyond that of other shinigami. To escape their notice you can understand, but yours?

Emika and Izumi naturally come looking for you, and you gather with everyone else at the main clearing of the camp.

“W-What’s happening?” Emika asks you.

“I’m not sure,” you hesitate, “but I think it might be a hollow. An actual one.”

Izumi looks absolutely terrified now. “H-H-H-Hollow?!”

You put a hand on her shoulder. “We’ve got actual shinigami with us, Izumi, don’t worry.”

As everyone is round up, Instructor Konuma quickly grabs everyone’s attention and silences the worried murmurs.

“Please, do not panic. A proper hollow has entered the training area, and we are dealing with it as we speak. We’ve prepared for situations like this, so you do not need to worry. Stay in your tents and await further orders.”

“But what if we get attacked?!” a voice shouts from the crowd.

“Then I’ll die protecting you if it comes to that,” Konuma answers with a calm resolution that you’ve never seen before.

“I-I guess we just h-have to wait,” Izumi sighs, trying to calm herself down.

Emika on the other hand looks more worried than before. “Where’s Heizo-san? I didn’t see him here!”

You frown. You sensed earlier Heizo fighting against the hollow, but it’s all mixed up now with the other seniors flaring their own reiatsus and especially the two 7th division guys shining through everyone else.

“I sensed him earlier fighting,” you admit, glancing at the worried Emika. “We could go after him to help, though the instructor wouldn’t like that.”

“Heizo-san is strong, but.. I’m still worried. Please, Koharu, can you lead us there?”

You close your eyes, probing to see if you can still follow the trail.

“I think so,” you reply and turn to look at Izumi. “You don’t have to go with us if you don’t want to.”

To her credit, Izumi genuinely considers the option instead of cowering right away. But in the end, she hesitates.

“I-I… I’m not strong, or fast, or g-good at spells. I’d just be… in your way. B-But once y-you come back, I-I’ll be sure t-to heal your w-wounds..!”

You give Izumi a warm smile. “I’ll take your word for it, Izumi!”

And with that, you quickly leave with Emika while there’s still commotion around the camp. Since the seniors are focused on bringing others to the camp and being on the lookout for any threats, it’s not hard to leave undetected.

“A-Aren’t you scared? I mean, we’re going straight, y-you know, to a hollow,” Emika asks as you run through the forest, taking flash steps from time to time, all to avoid possible confrontations with those who’d take you back.

“Not really,” you say bluntly. Of course, this made you think about the question. Why don’t you feel fear? It’s strange in a way, but the answer is obvious: Zilya. Not only was she a powerful hollow over a thousand years ago, she’s responsible for the power to paralyze and control hollows. The academy has shown you how much everyone fears hollows and their unpredictability, the chaos they represent.

Since you can control that chaos, you also control that fear.

“K-Koharu?” Emika snaps you out of your train of thought.

“It’s hard to explain, but you don’t need to worry about it.”

“It’s nice that you’re so confident about it,” she smiles.

“Let’s pick up the pace,” you tell Emika, “he’s not far!”

You push yourself to go faster and faster. You don’t doubt that Heizo is strong, but you’ve got a bad feeling about all this. Emika does her best to keep up with you, but she barely sticks to your tail. It doesn’t help that Heizo and the hollow are quite far away from the camp, much further than what the practice zone is.

Finally you catch up to him with Emika slightly lagging behind. The hollow Heizo is facing is a monstrous amalgamation that you’re not sure what animal exactly does it take after. It looks like Heizo has the upper hand, but after watching a moment it is clear the hollow is letting Heizo push him away. The end of the barrier is also close by. Is he luring Heizo away?

Shit, this situation might be much worse than expected. You have no idea what the hollow is capable of, and if the angler-hollow had anything to teach you, it’s that do not underestimate them.

Your reikaku also tells you that one of the 7th division guys is making his way here.

You have a bunch of choices in front of you: Either you can stick to the backlines and try to do something from there, or you can go in and fight with Heizo. Whatever you decide to do though, you need to prevent the hollow from further luring Heizo away from the camp.

>Go in and help him in close combat by flanking the hollow.

The most efficient way to stop the hollow is to just do that: make it stop. And you have the right tool for that: Hanran.

The problem is, you’re pretty far away and you’ve never used it at such range before. Ideally it works through touch, but you don’t have that liberty right now, if you want to keep to the back. Which means you’ll just have to do your damnest best.

You let your instincts slowly take over as your gaze is fixated on the hollow even with you running to keep up with the two. The inner chaos within you rises up, the familiar presence and power of Zilya. You can’t hear her voice, but you are sure she’s present, noticing your call. It’s like she’s daring you to use her power, daring to go all out.

Daring to abuse your power.

You grab onto that feeling and extend your now purple reiatsu like a beam towards the hollow. You narrowly hit it and the connection is formed. Not as strong as if you’d have physical contact, but enough that your mind is momentarily staggered by its chaotic emotions, before you push your own newfound bloodlust and will to dominate into it.

The effect is evident right away. The hollow’s movements falter, and Heizo scores a proper hit against it, but unfortunately not on the mask. Staggering and confused, the hollow attempts to continue to focus on Heizo, but is clearly looking for you.

The connection still holds and you are making it harder for the hollow to do anything, but it is taxing you as well. Emika joins you at this point, but you aren’t able to register her presence nor voice at this moment.

“WHERE; WHERE; WHERE? GONNA KILL YOU, WITCH, WITCH, WITCH!” you hear the anger-packed thoughts of the hollow.

Heizo and the hollow continue to battle. Heizo’s zanpakutō is released naturally, as he fights best with that pole-arm. The hollow on the other hand relies on sweeping motions with its hands and occasional bite: so far nothing extraordinary.

Keeping up Hanran starts to strain you too much. With one last push of energy, you go for one last stagger to give Heizo an opening, but in a moment of fatigue, the hollow instead finds your presence.

“FOUND YOU!” it screeches as it lunges towards you.

But it was just the weak spot that Heizo needed to deliver a decisive blow onto its head, destroying its mask.

And so the threat disappears.

With the situation over, your technique fades away and you slump onto the ground.

“Koharu, are you alright?!” Emika yells, catching Heizo’s attention as well.

“Y-Yeah,” you lie.

“You… what was that?” Emika whispers, clearly worried and somewhat terrified.

“Ask me on a better day,” you deflect her inquiry for now, as Heizo reaches your position.

“Emika-chan? Koharu-chan?! What are you doing here?!” he asks. Now that you see him closer, you see that he’s bleeding from the side of his head.

“We came to look for you, you dummy!” Emika now yells at him, looking like she’s about to cry. “When Koharu said you’re fighting, I was sooo worried! Why were you here fighting all alone?!”

“That’s what I’d like to know as well.”

The voice comes from behind you, and you suddenly feel great shivers down your spine. Turning around, you find the 3rd seat of the 7th Division, Asato Junichi, staring at Heizo with calm, murderous eyes.

“H-Huh?!” Heizo responds to the threatening tone of the shinigami. “What’s your problem?”

Asato closes his eyes. “I’ll tell you what the problem is once we get back to camp. Until then, take one of them and head back. That’s an order.”

Heizo’s clearly not liking this guy’s attitude at all. He’ll probably pick a fight with him if nothing is done.

You cough to get their attention, but end up coughing for real. But it does get their attention.

“Look, guys, you can bicker all you want, but if one hollow managed to get past the supposedly secure barriers, there’s no knowing if there’s others too. So let’s just.. get going, okay?”

You can feel Asato’s irritation, but he just nods. “Agreed. Let’s go.”

Heizo sighs. “Alright, Emika, time for your favorite past-time: piggybacking.”

“H-Hey I’m not a child anymore..!”

“But you’re still slow,” he says and picks Emika up. “See you at camp, grumpy old man.”

And with that he’s gone. Leaving you with Asato. He doesn’t say a word, but it’s clear that he strongly disapproves of Heizo, but keeps his mouth shut. He picks you up without a word too, sending you off into a protest.

“H-Hey, what are you doing? I can go on my own!”

“Stop being annoying,” he sighs, "I can see that you're exhausted." He then proceeds to flash step towards the camp.

Holy shit he’s fast. So this is what seated officers are capable of? Just how ridiculous are the Lieutenants and Captains then? But then again, remembering Hisashi, he didn’t really impress you that much.

Another thing that scares you, is that Asato feels strange. With physical contact, you can clearly sense something that you didn’t before: hollow reiatsu.

Very quickly you find yourself back at the camp, with Heizo arriving with Emika a few seconds later, much to Heizo’s frustration. The camp seems to be peaceful right now.

They both set you and Emika down, and of course, Heizo proceeds to do what he does best: piss people off.

“So what the hell’s your problem?” he demands.

Uh, oh.

Without warning, Asato grabs Heizo by his head, and sends him off sliding face-first across the dirt of the ground with great force that raises dust and deforms the soil.

“I’ll tell you what the problem is,” Asato says as he begins walking towards where Heizo stopped. A crowd instantly forms around the scene, with everyone shocked, especially Emika. “You abandoned your primary duty, that of protecting the students. And for what? Heroics?”

“RIP OPEN THE SKY, ARASHITORA!” Heizo releases his zanpakutō as he rises from the ground, his face bleeding. “You want to mess with me asshole?! After I did us all a favor by killing that hollow?”

“I sincerely doubt the glory is yours,” he says, sparing a quick glance towards you and Emika. “Fulfilling duty is the lifeblood of being a shinigami,” he continues as he walks towards Heizo unfazed. “If you fail it, or worse, falter, you become a dangerous traitor.”

“You’re not making any sense, you piece of shit!” Heizo charges towards Asato, who simply sidesteps his attack and hits Heizo’s neck with the side of his flat-open hand. Heizo slumps onto the ground. Everyone is watching in horror, especially Emika who’s protesting.

“Please stop!” she yells.

“Only one fate awaits emotional and temperamental idiots like you: death. Do you know how true hollows prey upon shinigami? They use your fear, your anger, your hopes and your dreams, your love. They play you like a fiddle and when you think you have the upper hand, they feast upon your corpse.”

Asato grabs Heizo by his bloodied jaw and lifts him up into the air. “But the worst sin of garbage like you, is putting your comrades in danger. One emotional slip up, and you cannot be trusted with keeping the backs of your friends safe.”

“F-Fuck you,” Heizo struggles to speak and spits blood onto Asato’s face.

“Mark my words, students,” the 7th division 3rd seat addresses everyone watching, “lest you become the reason for not only your own death, but the death of others.”

“There are hollows far worse than what’s in your textbooks, who will enjoy manipulating and abusing you, just like the Fear Eater.”

“Enough!” Instructor Konuma finally arrives with Lieutenant Iba. “Release the student at once, 3rd Seat.”

Asato looks at the two approaching figures from the parting masses.

“I said release him,” Konuma repeats, flaring his reiatsu along with his own murderous intent. Asato finally complies and releases Heizo, who falls onto the ground in a way that makes you wince.

“My lesson is over anyway,” he waves off and walks away.

“My deepest apologies, Konuma-sensei,” Lieutenant Iba sighs and bows. “I will reprimand him appropriately for this.”

Emika rushes to Heizo, crying, and the medical team comes to help him as well. All at the same time, you hear murmuring among the shocked students.

“What’s wrong with that guy?”

“He’s the one that, you know, is obsessed with that fairy tale..”

“About Kiga no Kage? That’s kind of.. sad.”

“Didn’t the 7th division have a great tragedy during the war?”

“I think he has just lost his mind.”

All in all, you feel exhausted enough that you’d like to just pass out on the spot, but for Emika’s sake, you can’t just yet. So you go to her and comfort her, while the medical team heals Heizo.

You’re left with a feeling that the troubles at this camp are far from over.

Pretty cool, looking forward to Saturday(?)
I hope if Hanran gets used again we try to interrogate the hollow to see if this is a coordinated attack and if so by whom.
Poor Heizo got dabbed on, but at least he's one half of a pretty cute couple.
How much longer is the camp again?

Also I must compliment you Trippy, for fleshing out a bit of worldbuilding regarding large-scale wars in the living world that didn't get brought up in canon. It does make quite a bit of sense that they'd lead to issues with a surplus of ghosts and presumably hollows due to the sheer rate of dead racking up so quickly in so many gruesome ways.
Especially when entire cities get firebombed or blasted with atomic weapons.

You are Nakashiri Koharu and the shinigami-training field trip faced a problem right on its first day. A stray hollow had somehow made its way through the outside barriers without anyone’s notice, causing the whole camp to become alarmed. The hollow was vanquished by Heizo, with discrete help coming from you, but by chasing the hollow he earned the wrath of one of the 7th division guests.

After assessing the situation, Istructor Konuma announced that the field trip would continue, despite suffering casualties. You saw poor Honomi-san crying over her lost classmate, who had the misfortune of meeting this hollow head-on, mistaking it for one of the practice dummy hollows.

Emika is still shocked by the cruel actions of third-seat Asato, and Izumi is frightened in general by this turn of events. You are yourself just exhausted from using Hanran for the first time at such distance and time.

The next day Instructor Konuma makes new arrangements for the practice teams. In order for Emika and Izumi to properly do their training, they are put together with Honomi and her remaining teammate, while you are to assist the lookout team, given your earlier show of skill in sensing. The lookout team is separated into a few outposts built onto trees, one of which becomes your new station.

Unfortunately for you, this turns out to be really, really boring.

>1/3
>>
The third through sixth year students doing this work aren’t that good at sensing as they should be, which somewhat explains why the hollow was discovered so late. Your own reikaku exceeds their combined abilities and beyond, which means that you’ll be the first one, and most likely the only one to notice any threats if they appear.

The lookout students don’t really like the idea either that a first-year is better at their jobs than they themselves. At first they try to bully you, but you show enough resilience that now they just ignore you.

Which again, means boredom.

Until you hear some liquid splat onto the wooden wall right next to you, as you are resting. Like blood, the red stuff flows downwards and reveals text…

“Urgent. Meet me at this tree’s top. -Hatter”

Your initial feelings of confusion turn into embarrassment and cringe, but the message continues:

“...P.S: If you're thinking that this message is like some written in the victim's own blood cliché from some TV show...then you obviously have no sense of humor!”

Slowly, the message fades away completely, leaving no evidence behind.

“Smartass,” you sigh and mumble.

At least that last part confirmed it for you that there’s only one idiot that could give birth to this kind of an idea.

Excusing yourself, you reach the top of the treetop where you see the horizon well, and the lights of a city in the distance just below the dark evening sky. This place is actually quite nice, you think to yourself, at least you don’t have to share the same space as the incompetent pricks whose job you’re doing for them.

“Koharu-san!” you hear the unmistakable voice of Urahara Kisuke, your former mentor from the living world. This startles you incredibly, as you cannot sense his presence. Looking around, you can’t even see the man, nor his iconic hat.

“I’m right here!” his voice speaks again, until you lock your eyes onto something flapping its small wings next to you.

A hell butterfly.

“K-Kisuke? What’s this?” you ask, confused. “Where are you?”

“Oh I’m somewhere, don’t worry! You like my new invention? It’s just a regular hell butterfly, though I’ve tampered with it somewhat!”

“I can see that,” you sigh.

“Anyway, long time no see, err, hear, Koharu-san! I hope you’ve been good?”

“Could be better, but could be much worse. So quite decent. I don’t think you’re risking things just to ask about my wellbeing?” you raise your eyebrow.

“Oh you hurt me!” Kisuke responds with clearly fake feelings of hurt. “Okay, you got me. I’m curious about your current situation in Soul Society and any possible developments.”

“Maybe I can help you out somewhere too, hmm?”

You can practically hear the smug face behind this freakish hell butterfly-radio connection.

“Well,” you begin, keeping your senses sharp for anything unusual, “is it normal for hollows to show up out of nowhere at these training camps?”

“Out of nowhere, you say?” Kisuke asks, following up with a moment of silence.

“No, it’s not normal. Though such things have been more frequent in the past decades. One time it was flooded with large hollows, though I hear a captain was conveniently there to save the day. Since then the camps have had much higher and tighter security, with an instructor as well.”

There used to be camps without an instructor present? What the hell?

“I couldn’t pick up the hollow’s presence until it started fighting,” you mention.

“That’s expected. It is the handiwork of our lovable conspirators, you see. They really like to experiment with hollows.”

“Is that how they got past the barriers too?”

“Most likely.”

So you might be dealing with not just normal hollows, but experimental ones?

“That’s not good,” you bite your lower lip.

“If you meet any, be very careful. There’s no telling what hidden special abilities they may possess,” Kisuke warns you, as the hell butterfly keeps flying around your head. “We’ve sighted such hollows all around Asia.”

You nod. “Thanks for the heads-up. I’ve met some of the captains too, the 4th, 5th, 10th and Kidō Corps ones.”

“Good. What do you think? Any tickle your fancy?” Kisuke asks in his goofy voice.

You facepalm internally. “Not that much, but… Captain Aizen and Captain Shiba felt like nice people. Captain Unohana gives me… mixed feelings, but I suppose she’s nice too.”

“Unohana, huh… that name still gives me the creeps.”

“W-What?” you ask in surprise.

“Nothing, nothing, just recalling the good ole memories of the past!” Kisuke laughs. “Keep it up Koharu, all’s going good so far. I gotta run now though, bye!”

“Wait-”

But the butterfly disintegrates in front of you, leaving only ashes to fly away with the wind.

“Great…”

Nothing unusual happens for the next few days. Occasionally something tries to enter through the barriers, but fail. You return each time back to your tent to Emika and Izumi between shifts, who tell you about their progress. They even manage to score a dummy hollow kill, despite Izumi’s shortcomings. On the fourth day of the camp, you return back to your team for the next part of the exercise. This time, instead of a dummy hollow, you are supposed to track and hunt down a shinigami ‘deserter’, a senior student that will play the part.

“There are many reasons for which shinigami attempt to desert,” Instructor Konuma explains to the whole camp. “Greed. Fear. Love. Hate. Even boredom. There however does not exist a single justified excuse for desertion. An act of treason is punishable by execution.”

There’s some murmuring among the crowd, along with tense glances at each other.

“As wielders of a zanpakutō, the soul cutter, you are bound to the Gotei 13, sworn to protect Soul Society, the innocent souls of the world, and fight hollows. It is a great honor, and you should feel great pride in being a shinigami.”

“If, however, your fellow shinigami deserts, or worse, commits treason, it may fall upon you to exact justice. A rogue shinigami is extremely dangerous, and by not answering to the Gotei 13 and the Central 46 they pose a great threat.”

“Today your tasks will be to find and capture a ‘deserter’ which our seniors will play the part of. They will assess you and surrender when you’ve done enough. However, do not go easy on them. Fight like your life depends on it, with the intent to kill.”

The crowd shuffles around as the targets are determined.

“I wonder who we’ll get?” Emika ponders. “Wouldn’t it be funny if it were Heizo-san?”

“I hope they’ve taken that into account so we don’t get him,” you explain, “I doubt you would be able to attack him seriously, nor him attack you.”

“Heh, you’re right!”

“U-Uh, g-g-girls…” Izumi’s face is flushed as she’s handed a piece of paper, on which is the target’s name and picture.

You both look at it, and swallow hard.

It’s 3rd seat, Asato Junichi.

A quick glance at Emika confirms your worries. She looks ready to kill him for what he did to Heizo on the first day.

“Emika, I know how you’re feeling,” you say, putting a hand on her shoulder, “use that anger, but direct it the right way. Hate him all you like, but if you don’t focus properly and work together, he’ll mop the floor with us, you understand me?”

Emika closes her eyes for a moment, breathing deep in and swallowing hard, before reopening her eyes with a fierce, tempered fury. “Y-You’re right, I won’t let you two down, I promise.”

Looks like she really got it under control, surprising you. You nod approvingly. “Good.”

Your team’s turn comes up only in some four hours, during which you try to discuss strategy to some degree, but to no real progress. You still remain the team’s skill-wise most diverse member, Emika is the kidō specialist, while Izumi sticks to a support role, providing healing when possible.

Otherwise, you spent some more time just chit-chatting and gossiping. You survive through another round of them trying to learn about the existence of your romantic life. You give them none of it, of course, denying everything adamantly.

Then it’s finally time to go, and you leave the camp behind and enter the now somewhat familiar forest once more. It’s morning, so it’s easy to see in here. Question is, what exactly is it that you’re looking for?

You close your eyes for a moment to reach out with your senses. There’s a little bit of everything around you, with other teams tracking their own respective targets. Ironically, you manage to find a few of their targets, as they are alone, but your own target eludes you. You’ve felt his reiatsu clearly before, but you just can’t properly locate him. However, you do feel just a small bit of his reiatsu lingering, giving you a general direction to follow.

“Damn that pervert-sensei,” you sigh, realizing that he probably gave your team a much harder target for a reason.

“W-What’s wrong?” Izumi asks, as you walk deeper into the forest together.

“Nothing. I think the third-seat is that way, but I couldn’t exactly find him.”

“Then that’s where we’ll go,” Emika nods.

It feels like ages combing through the forest, acting on your reikaku and instinct as a compass. Asato clearly moves around, trying to get you to walk in circles by the looks of things, but you still keep your pace.

“He knows where we are,” you sigh. “We might have to switch to shunpo if we really want to get to him. Izumi, do you think you can keep up with us?”

“I-I don’t know, b-but… Emika did h-help me with it a bit…”

Your eyes widen a bit, as you look at Emika. “Really? Let’s put that to trial then!”

It’s finally time to put this chase to a higher gear.

You pick up the pace. You feel the wind on your face, some of the falling leaves gently brush against your cheeks. As much as you’d like to go faster, you hold your foot off the gas pedal, and stay at Izumi’s pace, who’s trying her best.

“We’ll stick together,” you tell them both. “Nobody is left behind.”

Izumi clearly appreciates this and it drives her to go forward, but unfortunately it’s just not enough. Asato of course picks up on your new speed and stays one step ahead of the game. You suspect he’s been asked to move much slower than what he could really go, but he’s still not making it one bit easy for you and your team.

Damn it, looks like you’ll have to figure something else out.

“This isn’t working,” you sigh, stopping at the base of one tree, resting your hand against it while taking a deep breath. Emika is more worked up, while Izumi looks like she’s out of breath. At least she kept up with her pace.

“He knows we’re onto him,” you turn to face your teammates, “and we can’t catch up to him like this.”

“Well,” Emika begins, taking a deep breath herself, “what would a deserter do? If we can’t catch him, how can we lure him out?”

“W-W-Well, I read that d-deserters will do anyt-thing to guarantee their s-safety…” Izumi says between heavy breathing.

>”You’re not going to like it, but we need bait. Living bait.”

“Safety, huh?” you muse. “Can we promise him that somehow?”

“What do you mean?” Emika asks.

“I mean like, try to offer him, or better, negotiate him a way to be safe from execution or pursuit. Something like that,” you explain your general idea.

“There’s t-technically a law,” Izumi mentions, recalling some of her books, “it is a-against the law to commit murder.”

“It’s a little far fetched,” Emika sighs. “I mean, a deserter would know that they face execution, right? Even if that’s not the case, there’s still other punishments.”

“Probably. What if we say his crime was pardoned? We weren’t told why he was branded a traitor.. or deserter? Whatever, Asato might grab onto that hook.”

“T-There have been cases of p-pardons!” Izumi mentions.

“Then let’s try that. It’s worth a shot.”

The three of you keep close enough together and walk towards the direction of Asato, who’s kept somewhat close-by to you, but just enough out of reach that you wouldn’t be able to get to him quick enough.

“Asato-san! We’re not here to kill you! By orders of the Central 46, you have been pardoned!”

The three of you continue to walk towards the retreating Asato while shouting this. Just as it seems like it’s hopeless, he appears in front of you three.

“Pardoned, huh? Why should I believe for a second that the Central 46 would do that?”

Your heart freezes for a moment. The malice in his voice… there’s no way he’s acting that. The hate in his eyes when he spoke of the Central 46. Just what is his relationship with them?

You glance over to Emika, who is clearly doing her best to hold back her anger. Fortunately it looks like your earlier talk with her motivates her to keep things at bay.

“Time moves on,” you say, “and so do the laws of Soul Society. Your actions that incriminated you have been pardoned.”

There’s a moment of silence as your eyes are locked with Asato’s. Your words have affected him, even past the act he’s putting up. Is… is he actually guilty of something?

“Again, I find it hard to believe they would do something like that. You have no way of guaranteeing your claims. I’d be walking into my own grave,” Asato spits.

You’re in a tough position.

“That’s a reasonable point,” you sigh, crossing your arms, “but what did you expect, a transcript of the proceeding and video-evidence?”

This isn’t looking too good, but for now Asato is listening and hasn’t attacked yet. “Listen, things have changed, key figures stepped down for ‘personal reasons,’ I don’t know more than that. But I do know they were replaced by smarter people.”

“Your former captain would really like you back, Asato-san.”

Those words seem to resonate with him, but he still acts wary. Jeez, just how demanding is this guy gonna be? Fine.

You unfasten the belt to which your zanpakutō is attached to, and let it drop onto the ground, then extend your arms to the sides. Both Emika and Izumi look at you with wide-eyes, while Asato simply raises an eyebrow.

“You wanted insurance, here you have it. My zanpakutō and my life.”

The sound of wind blows through the air as nobody says a word. Everybody just looks at each other, tense as hell.

Finally, it’s Asato who facepalms and laughs. “All that sweet talking, and this is how you finish it? I’ll admit, you could have fooled quite many deserters with that speech, they’re seldom smart.”

“But this? You’re leaving yourself dangerously open to an attack. For such a trick to work you need to have the utmost confidence that your skill overshadows that of your opponent.”

You blink for a moment, listening to him as he breaks the act. Crossing your arms, your cheeks redden a little. “Sheesh, no need to be a dick about it.”

In a split second, he is right in front of you, his zanpakutō drawn against your neck. Izumi and Emika are instantly alarmed, shouting your name. You feel cold sweat all around, this man’s intent… he really wants to kill you, right here, right now. You have very little wiggle room, a single mistake and you’re sure he’ll slice your throat open.

“Now, what do you do next?” Asato muses, narrowing his eyes.

>He’s really close, and you can sense a chaos within him. Hanran.
For once, I think our tried and tested tactic might not work out in this situation.
>>
>>4536088
>It’s going to be really dangerous, but hakuda-kick his crotch.
>Say "I dunno man... I guess it's checkmate for me?"
He'll probably start saying something in response.
When he opens his mouth he'll be slightly distracted with what he's saying, which should be enough to lean into the kick and move our neck off the line of his sword.

Hanran = bad idea because witnesses and this dude's going to notice if some funky reiatsu is creeping on him. Also his mannerisms have been all over the place.
And at the end of the day it's just a training exercise, no need for Koharu to expose himself and blow his load so early. Using it on the hollow instead of kido was bad enough, Emika already suspects.
>>
>>4536088
>He’s really close, and you can sense a chaos within him. Hanran

Plant it on him with a kiss

Call him senpai.
>>
>>4536431
Now that I'm not at work I'm gonna expand my reasoning here.

First off, I feel that we are too worried about our hollow-like reiatsu being detected by others, ichigo goes through the whole series without anyone giving a single fuck about it, and now this guy shows up, also has hollow reiatsu.

Second, I feel if one of our two abilities were to be known I'm okay with it being this one.

And for the kiss, I think that with a sword to our neck we are more likely to succeed a social roll rather than a combat roll.
>>
>>4536354
Support.
He acts like a dick, treat him like a dick.
...I wonder if we could activate Senzen to increase the chances of this kick landing?
>>
>>4536563
>He acts like a dick, treat him like a dick.
And so he shall be kicked in the dick.
>activate Senzen
Normally this would be a good idea but in this circumstance I wouldn't recommend for 2 reasons
1) He's right in front of us and should easily detect the reiatsu change (also a reason why I say using Hanran is a bad idea)
2) He strikes me as the kind of guy who has enough screws loose to be almost impossible to get a read on
>>
>>4536563
Yeah he's kind of a dick. But I don't know he doesn't sound condescending to me. Up until now he was super cereal all the time and now he broke character. That's a good sign
I know this won't get voted but I'm tossing it in anyway. Why go only half crazy when you can go all the way?
>Grab his sword and guide it to our heart instead

Calming yourself down just enough to think things through, you go through your options. While you have your trusty two powers available to you, the fact remains that they take a bit of time to activate, and your reiatsu will spike, which no doubt Asato will notice. This unfortunately leaves you only direct methods, which success relies on your speed against his.

“A-Asato-senpai,” you lock your eyes with his and show some worry on your face through an awkward grin, “you wouldn’t force yourself on me like this, w-would you?”

Asato blinks just enough time in confusion that you drop yourself backwards into a freefall, missing Asato’s zanpakutō, which you turn into a backflip, and most importantly, a hakuda-powered kick of doom to the crotch.

You can safely say that he was absolutely not prepared for this, based on how his face seems to contract in size.

As you do a few more backflips to get some distance after grabbing your sword from the ground, Asato’s pain distracts enough that Emika lands the Shakkahō spell on him without incantation. Of course, that’s not nearly strong enough to even bruise him, but it provides more distraction for you to engage him with your own zanpakutō.

Izumi sticks behind, doing her best to follow the situation and keep out of the way, while you engage in a sword battle with the third seat with Emika providing fire support in the form of hadō.

“Unexpected, but not bad,” he tells you as he’s blocking your strikes easily enough, even while having to dodge kidō.

“Thanks,” you mutter, trying your hardest to figure out any weakness in his defense. He’s only struck at you a few times, all of which took considerable effort to block or dodge. How do you even have a chance to fight a third seat, and how the hell is this fair when the others have just senior students?

“Mediate, Naime no Daiza!” you declare. As the incantation is spoken, your zanpakutō transforms into the familiar chalice-like hilt, with a reiatsu shift that could be described as a soft sea breeze.

“Hooh?” Asato raises his eyebrow as he locks his blade with your transformed zanpakutō’s blade. “I was wondering when you’d release it.”

You grit your teeth. You know he has the skill and strength to back up his arrogant confidence, but it still doesn’t mean you like it. As Emika releases once again another bolt of kidō, the two of you separate again, before continuing the same dance as before.

With each swing of your blade, each touch with his own zanpakutō, you can sense that Naimen no Daiza is trying to absorb the reiatsu in some odd way. The most effective way would be to actually hit him, but you have doubts Asato will give you the chance. Lucky for you however, his zanpakutō is a part of him like yours is a part of you. That means, touching that will be enough.

And so you get your blades locked again and focus your own reiatsu into the blade as it absorbs and mixes in Asato’s reiatsu, and soon enough, there is a bond between you, and…

You feel confused. You blink a few times, and feel warm, moist air, like steam that has escaped a bathhouse. Looking around, you find that you are indeed in a very traditional Sentō, a place for washing up and cleansing.

Yet this whole place feels somewhat disturbing to some degree, like it’s been once fundamentally damaged. There’s no traces of it anywhere though, as the place looks like it’s been like this for years.

“H-Hello?” you say out loud into the large room, which is clearly the dressing room.

“Leave at once!” you hear a woman’s voice cry out from behind two sliding doors, which clearly lead to the bath area of this place.

Wait. Is this some sort of inner world? Did… did you just enter his?

“Where am I?” you respond to the voice, taking slow and cautious steps towards the doors.

“No! No more intruders! No more changes!” her voice screams like she’s about to be murdered. Just a moment after, Asato appears through one of the doors to the side, deathly afraid and pale. Both of your eyes meet, and his eyes instantly become filled with utmost animosity.

“I don’t know what you are doing, but I’ll kill you this instant if you don’t leave!”

“A-Asato-san, you have to believe me, I don’t know what’s happening!” you plead, lightly trembling. If previously you felt scared, now his undivided wrath is submerging you into a pool of fear. The woman’s screams continue, as more steam pours through between the doors. Asato takes further steps towards you, but you’re unable to move.

“Then LEAVE!” he shouts, drawing his sword.

“I-I’m trying, I’m trying..!” you shout back, closing your eyes. As much as you try, in your current state you’re unable to focus properly, and your attempts at leaving this place die in vain. Asato finally reaches you, taking you by your neck and puts the tip of his sword just an inch to your forehead, breathing heavily with bloodshot eyes.

“N-No, p… please!” you plead with tears in your eyes, as you struggle for air.

His eyes soften, and Asato releases you, lowering his blade. “Shit… then do something about this! Your mere presence is affecting this place!”

“Y-You were going to… going to kill me..!” you cough while pushing yourself up from the floor, reaching out to your throat with your right hand.

“Look, I’m sorry, I.. this caught me completely by surprise. No one else should be able to come here, you must understand!” he gets on his knees and tries to support you. “Now, I know it’s hard, but breathe slow and steady, and calm down..!”

You do your best, and soon enough things seem to calm down everywhere.

Asato exhales in relief. “Good,” he says and looks around, as if one would evaluate damages in their house after a typhoon. “It appears your mental state directly influences this place… even though only mine should.”

“T-This is your inner world?” you ask, to which Asato nods as you sit upright on the floor. “And that woman, she’s…”

“My zanpakutō spirit, yes. Her name is Oiran,” he introduces her to you, as he looks towards the doors leading to the bath area. “She’s not in the mood for… visitors right now.”

“She mentioned intruders... has this happened before? Is that the hollow presence I felt?”

As you say those words, Asato’s eyes widen and then narrow. “You must be mistaken.”

“My senses are never wrong, Asato-san, I understand if you-”

“You are mistaken,” he cuts you off, frowning.

Looks like he’s not open to talking about that topic. You could press on about it, clearly he’s hiding something, but somehow you’d need to get him to trust you more.

On the other hand, the sooner you get out of this place, the better. Clearly you’re not supposed to be here, yet it is the result of Naimen no Daiza, and you can influence this place and its inhabitants.

“Ever since the hollow attack you've been wary of me. You know something don't you?” you ask, locking your eyes onto his.

Asato looks at you, as if he were appraising the nature of something either really valuable, or really dangerous. Finally, he sighs and relents.

“I have my suspicions,” he admits. “Heizo-san is strong, but he’s a complete idiot. The hollow played him perfectly, but something tipped the odds, something with hollow reiatsu.”

You close your eyes. “You're not the only Shinigami with at least some hollow reiatsu here.”

“How?” Asato instantly asks, his eyes keenly fixated on you.

“Not so fast,” you put a hand between you and him. “I’m taking a risk by trusting you, who beat up a friend of mine and was ready to kill me. This can’t be a one-way pipe.”

Asato rises up and ponders a little bit, looking towards the doors, behind which Oiran is residing, hiding.

“My zanpakutō, Oiran. She was stolen from me, almost forty years ago, by a hollow,” he explains, lamenting the past. “Only by sheer luck and irony of this world did I get her back. Alas, the damage had already been done.”

Asato turns back to face you, his sorrow replaced by anger and hate. “Yes, I too have hollow reiatsu, because of what that hollow did to me, to Oiran. And I swear I will leave no stone unturned until I find that abomination and eradicate every single inch of it.”

Steam again starts filling the room, but soon disperses, as Asato calms down. “You know what this means, Koharu, what the laws of Seireitei say. If you mention anything about this to anyone, it will spell my doom, and I will have no problem dragging you to hell alongside me.”

You swallow hard, and give him a full sitting bow. “I promise, I will keep this our secret.”

“Now, let’s-”

You blink, and the forest is all around you, and Asato is a distance away from you, bound by the three yellow golden energy spikes of the bakudō Shitotsu Sansen, as well as the cackling energy rope spell, Hainawa.

“Koharu, are you alright?!” Emika asks beside you, holding the rope. Izumi is also next to you, looking ready to heal. “You were spacing out for a moment there!”

“I..” you try to recall properly what happened, the confusion slowly fading away. “I’ll explain later. What happened?”

“Whatever you did,” Emika sighs in relief at seeing you are alright and continues, “you gave me the time to do a double-incantation kidō.”

Emika’s angry eyes set upon Asato. “You’re going to pay for what you did to Heizo!”

You however put a hand to her sword that she was raising. “Emika, no. He may have done wrong then, but he is not our enemy.”

Emika looks bewildered, but relents, breathing in and out. “S-Sorry. I.. my feelings carried me away.”

"He'll apologize for it though," you glare at Asato, who sighs.

“Well, it looks like you’ve captured the deserter!” Asato congratulates you and your team, while breaking out from the bakudō, dusting him off and clapping. Asato keeps his eyes on you for a lingering moment, before closing them. “That means you’ve passed the test!”

>>
Returning to the camp, you find Instructor Konuma, who spits out his tea at the sight of you. “Don’t tell me…”

“They passed, old man. Now that I don’t owe you anything, I’ll return to my proper duties. Bye!” Asato says, and with that, disappears with a flash step, leaving Konuma confused as hell.

“Did he go easy on you?!” he demands, to which you shake heads.

“Did he bribe you?!?!” he puts his hands on your shoulders. Again, you shake your heads, awkwardly.

Konuma looks like he’s about to cry, though you don’t know if it’s from frustration or happiness.

“Well, looks like you’ve passed the last test then. Congratulations. Just… stick to your tents until the end of the camp, I guess. Except for you, Koharu, you’re on lookout duty.”

You want to protest, but you just don’t want to argue at this point. All those complications before left you tired, and you can half-sleep at the lookout outposts, as it’s still better than the shitty skills of the senior students.

“Alright, alright,” you sigh with resolution.

At the outpost, you have a lot of free time now to think about things, right after making sure the seniors won’t bother you. Holding your zanpakutō in front of you, you think about its existence itself.

“Mediate…” you whisper, but not exactly calling out its shikai. It allowed you to enter the very inner world of another soul. No, not just enter, but affect it, as if you were a part of it. Asato’s zanpakutō spirit, Oiran, faced her past demons because of your very presence. You wonder, just what could you do with Naimen no Daiza? What are the limits of what you could change, were you to really will it? How would you even go about training such a thing safely?

That is a question to resolve for another time.

Two days go by without anything out of the ordinary. Students going around the forest, dummy hollows still roaming around and artificial souls waiting for their rescuers. Students doing their best to get their tasks done before the field trip ends to be one step closer to graduation.

You’d use this time for something actually useful, but even doing jinzen would jeopardize your sixth sense. With one hollow incident on the first day, you’re not going to drop your guard until you get back to Soul Society. Even Urahara confirmed it, that there have been incidents like these, and that hollows with odd powers have been spotted all around this side of the world.

And so it is, that your sixth sense picks up something out of the ordinary, an anomaly. The barriers – that keep everything inside secure from the outside, but also prevent the fractures in the fabric of reality that hollows use – they fluctuate just enough that alarms you. They are clearly being tampered with, and the subtlety of it leaves you to believe that it’s not the work of hollows.

You are unsure however just yet, as nothing otherwise is happening. You feel like something is going to go wrong, really fast and really bad if you just sit and wait. With the barriers compromised, you can sense the fabric slowly twist and rip apart. The dark sky of the night leaves it invisible to the naked eye however.

>Sound the alarm here and now. The sooner everyone can be rounded up the better.

Without hesitation, you shunpo your way back to camp where Instructor Konuma is. If there’s anyone who’ll listen to you and know what to do, it’s gotta be him. At least, that’s what you really, really hope.

Twigs break against your rapidly moving body as you hasten, so much that when you reach the camp you’re out of breath.

“Konuma-sensei!” you hastily greet the instructor in front of you, who looks at you bewildered.

“Koharu? What’s wrong, why aren’t-”

“No time. The barriers have been compromised and a rift to the garganta is forming slowly above us. What should we do?” you ask.

Konuma pales for a moment as he processes this information, clearly thinking that this is absurd, before rushing into a nearby tent, with you in tow. Inside there’s a white, glowing sphere, apparently the source of one of the barriers.

“You say something is wrong, huh?” Konuma mumbles, before extending his hand towards the orb.

“Truths of heaven, lies of the underworld! Rip open the hearts of the damned, and restore the screams of the unheard! Crush the lungs of the forsaken, and restore the horrors of the unseen! Bakudō 53: Hanmei!”

The white light of the kidō envelops the orb, and suddenly cracks appear all over the orb, and the light in it fades.

Along with the orb, Konuma’s face flushes pale white.

Rushing outside he rings the alarm bell, while chanting the incantation of another spell, Tenteikūra. He draws black square-like patterns along his arms with conjured ink, and holds them out in front of him. As soon as a bright blue square appears in front of him, he starts speaking.

“Attention all students! This is Instructor Konuma speaking. Return to camp at once, make sure your comrades are with you. Seniors scout out the forest and make sure everyone is on their way back. Message over!”

“K-Konuma-sensei?” you ask cautiously as the instructor is sweating and breathing heavily. You know he’s not a kidō specialist, so those spells must’ve taken a lot of juice out of him. Which, frankly, scares you, considering what dangers might be approaching.

“We owe you thanks, Koharu,” he turns to look at you. “This is serious… very serious. You just might have saved many lives with thi-”

Konuma is unable to finish his sentence as an explosion is set off in the middle of the camp. Immediately you refocus your senses, but you can’t find the culprit just by that, especially now that every student at the camp is raising their reiatsu in panic.

It doesn’t help that you sense multiple strong hollows appearing all around the forest.

Konuma puts his hand on your shoulder. “Go to your friends, Koharu. Stay together, I promise on my life I will get you all out of here.”

“S-Sensei?”

“I said GO!”

Konuma-sensei draws his sword and disappears, leaving you alone amidst the worsening storm. A dreadful feeling also overcomes you, something bad is approaching… and it feels somehow familiar.

As you feel hollows rain down from the sky, you quickly make your way to your tent which has fortunately not yet been immolated. Emika and Izumi are standing outside of it as you land next to them from a flash step.

“Are you guys okay?!” you ask, breathing heavily.

“Y-Yeah,” Emika nods, “What about you? W-What’s happening?” she asks. You look at Izumi, seeing her terrified state. It’s a miracle she isn’t panicking.

“Hollows. Lots of them. We need to stay safe and hide until we can escape.”

“How long?” Emika asks nervously.

You shake your head in response.

Unfortunately, the camp is on a flat, cleared land with no real shelter anywhere besides the tents, most of which are currently on fire. The forest and the canopy could provide some defense, but that’s where the hollows are bound to be.

As you are considering your options though, that dreadful, awful, familiar presence is rushing towards you, and your heart sinks as you realize what it is.

“Q-Quick, dodge..!” you shout to Emika and Izumi, but it’s a second too late as a great red blast hits your position, sending all three of you flying along with the flash step you attempted to make.

“Ko~ ha~ ru~!” the voice rings, though smoke covers the sky now from the blast. However, the presence is now unmistakable.

Matsubara Kinji.

Or rather, the hollow that formed from his wretched soul. His reiatsu feels like it’s strangling you, it’s much stronger than what it was when he assaulted your former high school, where he also hurt your friends, and ultimately broke your physical body.

“Finally, FINALLY, HEHEHEHE, OH THE SWEET JOY!” he screams like a madman. As the smoke clears somewhat, you make out his silhouette, and the two piercing red eyes looking directly at you, eyes that make you feel like your bones turn to stone, and your blood stops still.

“I’ve FOOOUUUND YOOOUUU!”

>hollow's inner world
That's an interesting question to which I don't yet hold the answers. An inner world is partially the result of awakening a zanpakuto, but on the other hand, Koharu had one before it, but that's because of his soul shenanigans.
Probably would be an inner world that isn't fixated properly, so it'd change like a dream. And with hollows, it's very, very chaotic.

>Aizen's inner world
Asato was caught off guard. Achieving the same with Aizen would be a humongous feat in itself.

Oh he's complete bad news. Last time you saw him he became a Gillian, so what do you think he is now?
>>
Oh boy. This seems like an encounter that we're under-leveled for.
And with so many witnesses our options are restricted :|
Welp, guess it's time for the strategy our caveman ancestors used to defeat giant, overpowered monsters. Get distance, bog him down with traps and ranged attacks to weak-points.
At least he doesn't have Sonido so we should be faster.

>>4537589
>Last time you saw him he became a Gillian, so what do you think he is now?

>>

Since we have a few high rank Shinigami around, our best bet would be to stall and survive until backup arrives. My two big concerns are Izumi locking up and our rival coming in and becoming a target we have to take a hit for.
>>
>>4538319
Considering the strength of mosquito asshole and the apparent number of Hollows present, I wouldn't be surprised if Soul Society is already mobilizing a response force. After all, it'd be really bad rep for the academy and the Gotei 13 if they allow this many students be wiped out because they weren't paying attention!
So yeah, stall for time like Koharu's life depended on it - because it does!

Then again, I also wouldn't be surprised if a *certain someone* was delaying a response from being made. Those barriers didn't fluctuate by accident.
>>
So, Koharu's shikai basically forcefully drags people into the mind scape, yeah?

Last fight between Legion and Shadowking comes to mind.
>>
>>4538915
Given what it does with our own two spirit buddies I don't think so.
I may be crazy and you might be right but I think it's an empty chalice. It draws in the energy of whatever it touches and holds it. So we might be able to copy other peoples powers.
It probably takes their consent with the whole meditate thing but still if I'm correct that's broken as shit

You are Nakashiri Koharu, and you are in deep shit.

The monstrous being in front of you, also known as a hollow, is the product of your mercy with your former high school’s past principal spirit, Matsubara Kinji. As he turned into a hollow, you had beaten him enough to make a choice.

You chose poorly.

Now Kinji has become the notorious Blood Embezzler, and due to your meddling with his mind, he’s become completely obsessed with you. Only in the heart of Soul Society did you find peace for a little over a year, but here he is now, back at your throat.

The hollow screams loud with a heavily distorted and resonating voice, as if he were both laughing, crying and screaming in pain at the same time.

“Oh finally, finally, FINALLY, I can END the TORTURE! I WILL DRAIN YOU DRY, KOHARU! THERE WILL NOT BE A SINGLE DROP OF BLOOD LEFT OF YOU!”

Just by the feel of his reiatsu, you can see that you’re no match for him in raw power. A head-on fight will leave you in ruins, or worse, leaving you with few viable alternatives. Either you figure out another way to deal with him…

Or you run. Really fast.

>Devise a strategy (write-in required)
>Mental: You’ve used Hanran once on him, he should be much more susceptible to it.

Stall for time, there's no way this Hollow Incursion has gone unnoticed by Soul Society. Evade Kinji as best we can but try not to get too far away from the camp. Kido blasts to distract and disrupt Mosquito-face, don't even need to hurt him with them so no need for incantations.

Starting with Hanran risks exhausting us, hold off on it for now.

How long can Hanran be maintained anyways, with the usual touch range.

How long can jorogumo be released for that matter?

You haven't tested the extents of it yet, but so far you've managed to do about 5-10 minutes at range.

You've only once ever released it. Maybe you'd like to find out?

I'm still on the road, so it'll take a bit until I can write an update.
>>
>>4541103
>Spoiler
Not entirely risk-free, but getting out of immediate line of sight from any students or the seated Shinigami would help with us not getting outed for having Hollow-like abilites.
The reiatsu blast from releasing Jorogumo will still be sensed, of course, but with this much chaos going on we'd be more likely to get away with it. We'd still have to time switching out from Jorogumo to avoid backup from seeing it.

Anyway, I still want to start with stalling so we can get a feel for how much stronger Kinji has become and then decide on further action.

“E-Emika, Izumi,” you swallow hard, “go find somebody strong.”

“K-Koharu?” Emika tries to ask you something, but by that point you’re already off with a shunpo. Kinji is clearly targeting you, which means anyone near you will be in mortal danger. You can’t have that, you refuse to be the reason once again that your friends are hurt and the place is destroyed.

You aim to confuse him, to flash step around him and keep him distracted for long enough. Hollows have no rapid-movement techniques, right?

“Damn it, where’s Konuma-sensei? Asato-senpai, or Iba-senpai?!” you curse under your breath. Kinji tries to hit you with really fast and powerful punches, but you manage to elude him each time. It looks like your tactic is working!

...That is, until you feel a sudden painful, head-splitting roar. Being in close proximity to him, it stuns you enough that he manages to graze you with one of his punches, sending you flying off into the forest.

Were it not for your hakuda and reiatsu training, your torso would have blown off to bits you imagine. Breaking trunks and branches alike, you finally stop at the fourteenth tree, bleeding from your front and back, your head spinning from the concussion.

Shit… just what kind of beast is he now?

Is it really your fault for unleashing this monstrosity on this world?

“Ko~ ha~ ru~!” you hear the distant scream of Kinji, as he’s no doubt racing towards you at full speed.

Time seems to slow down however, and you hear familiar voices.

“You must stay calm, Koharu. Only like that can we survive this,” you hear Celaris speak.

“Forget that, it’s time to unleash our anger, Koharu, let’s finish what we started!” Zilya’s voice retorts.

“Use our power!”
“Use our power!”

Fuck it, we can't really afford to gamble by holding back here.

I just hope we don't get caught using Kaishigome or Jorogumo. If only because extra Soul Cutter releases outside of Shikai and Bankai are unheard of. And we can't exactly spin either Kaishigome or Jorogumo as our actual Shikai because several students already witnessed what Naimen no Daiza's Shikai looks like.

“M-Mediate, Naimen no Daiza…”

With the energy you still have, you release your zanpakutō’s shikai, bringing a soft flow of translucent reiatsu with it. It rips you apart almost literally that you are put to such a choice. Sure, you never asked for either of them, but the fact is, they’re both part of you. But the fact is, it’s Zilya’s influence that brought this calamity upon you and others, her power that meddled with Kinji’s mind in your attempt to dominate him. As such, it is only fitting to end his life with the same sword that gave him his drive.

“Defile and Devour, Jorōgumo!” you shout, this time bursting with dark, malevolent, purple reiatsu. Were it not for the hollow presences all around, you have no doubt it’d attract unwanted attention. Your zanpakutō changes into the black, curved sword that resembles both a spider leg and fang at the same time.

“Ahh, finally,” you hear Zilya’s voice resonate within your head.

As Kinji arrives at your position, his blood-sucking nose aimed at you, you dodge in time before he impales the poor damaged tree which stopped your flight last time.

“Come here, little bir-” he laughs, but stops mid-sentence as he looks towards you. “WHAT IS THIS?!”

“This is your doom,” you say, two distinct voices leaving your mouth, resonating together. Like the eye of the storm, you direct the emotional chaos at Kinji, stopping him just enough for Jorōgumo to cut his flesh. Of course, it sizzles shut right away, but you’ve achieved what you wanted.

Jorōgumo now has his reiatsu. And with that, it’s like you were in physical contact with him.

“Hanran!” you shout, extending the sword towards the hollow, and forcibly create a mental bridge between you two.

“No, NO, NOO!” Kinji shouts, as he clutches his head with his hands, before violently punching around at anything around him. Alas, it’s no use, as with Zilya’s power you override his will. The connection is clearly strained and you don’t have full control, but it’s enough that you could force him to do your bidding.

On the other hand, now that you have him under control, you could finish what you couldn’t back in the real world. Killing him will most likely require heavy power, however.

>Use the Blood Embezzler to kill other hollows.

The hollow birthed from Kinji’s soul is struggling hard against you, taking your full focus to keep him still. Your avenue into his mind was guaranteed by your first meddling with his mind, the same one that brought him his obsession with you.

You walk over to him, fighting against your own fear. His figure, clad in white skeletal bits like that of his mask, is daunting, as he stands almost five or six times taller than you, not to mention his bulkiness. With a shunpo, you get right in front of his mask and grab his long nose.

“It’s time to taste your own blood,” you spit in his face, and drag the nose to impale himself in his torso. It takes considerable strength out of you to even move his heavy head around, but you get the deed done, and his nose begins to suck blood.

The blood sack behind his mask starts to fill up. It appears he has no control over his nose, but you keep pushing his head further downwards for good measure. He starts shaking and convulsing from the pain.

However, as his reitasu spikes, your instincts tell you to retreat. The Blood Embezzler regains control over his body and unimpales himself, his wounds sizzling shut. His bloodshot eyes however reveal his anger and pain; drinking his own blood definitely did some damage to him.

But, as with all hollows, it’s the mask that needs to be destroyed.

Your mental connection with him weakens and you are unable to contain him any longer, but it still exists just enough that you can cause him to slow down or stun him if necessary. You find use in it right away as he tries to rush you with a load of punches, but you manage to dodge him by meddling with his mind.

“YOU BITCH! GET. OUT. OF. MY. HEAD!”

“Make me!” you retort and flash step away from his deadly punches and attempts to impale you. With the chaos of reiatsu that Zilya’s power and Jorōgumo brings, you have no idea what’s happening around you, whether there’s anybody else near. On the other hand, it’s her power that’s keeping the Blood Embezzler weakened just enough that you have a chance to keep up with him.

As long as his reiatsu is in Jorōgumo, you can make it much harder for him to do anything, and as long as he’s focusing on you, everyone else is out of trouble.

Problem is, with his undivided attention, it’s you who is in trouble.

Kinji’s irregular punches decimate the landscape, lifting soil into clouds of dust and other particles. He seeks to hit you, but you use the mental connection between you two to make him miss, or slow down enough that you are able to dodge. A few times he gets really close to delivering a vastly more powerful hit than what originally sent you this far away from the camp.

“STAY STILL, STAY STILL, STAY STILL!” Kinji continues to growl in his dark, resonant voice.

Your concentration however slips just enough that a fatal hit is imminent, but just at that point Asato appears, with his zanpakutō drawn and released by the looks of it, with a flintlock mechanism at its hilt.

“Are you alright? I heard from Emika and Izumi,” he grits his teeth as he struggles against the massive power behind Kinji’s punch.

You blink, trying to grasp what’s happening and just nod. “A-Almost!”

“OUT OF MY WAY, YOU’RE NOT MY PREY!”

“You don’t get to decide that!” Asato retorts. With the use of flash steps, both of you escape from the path of destruction that follows when Kinji’s punch is allowed to continue.

“He’s strong, very strong… a Menos,” Asato speaks beside you.

“M-Menos?” you ask, though instantly you see images flash before you of hollows eating hollows. The idea is making you sick to the boot. “That’s not good..!”

“We got reinforcements however, they’re evacuating the others and dealing with the other Menos. This one however… is a surprise.”

Asato glances over to your zanpakutō, then back at Kinji, who is still squirming on the ground, trying to resist your influence on him.

“I won’t ask questions about that, nor what you feel like right now. Consider yourself lucky that I was the one to find you.”

The battle rages on. With Kinji launching himself at the two of you, you are fighting an uphill battle, especially as you are reaching exhaustion. The injury you sustained initially could push you over to unconsciousness any second, it’s by sheer will alone that you’re operating on right now to keep that monster Kinji at bay.

As Asato is fighting and half getting his attention now, you see light ripples in the air that you can’t exactly distinguish. A few exchanges later, Asato orders you to get some distance. Good thing you oblige, as right after you see a huge explosion set off, engulfing a large chunk of the forest area where Asato was.

You get closer to look at the aftermath, and find a charred Kinji still standing, with Asato heavily breathing some distance away from him.

“Damn you… DAMN YOU!” Kinji shouts and begins charging something in his mouth. It has lots of energy behind it, enough to obliterate the whole area around you.

“T-This is not good!” Asato shouts to you, “RUN, KOHARU!”

However, you don’t hear him. Your focus is on Kinji, and in that moment you know exactly what to do, what to use your last ounce of willpower to finish the deal.

Aiming Jorōgumo at him, you use the mental connection to close off his mouth just before he releases the incredible amount of destructive power.

Kinji’s head rips open and the whole thing bursts into an explosion of gore and the blood he’s sucked up until now, with pure red flames released into the atmosphere.

The deed is finally done.

As the mental connection fades away with Kinji’s death, so does your mind slip into unconsciousness…

The next time you wake up is in some kind of a hospital. A nurse nearby notices you regaining consciousness, and quickly fills you in.

“This is the Central Medical Institute, in the 4th Division grounds. But all you need to know is that you’re safe and sound!”

You still can’t move much, and your whole torso hurts. Under the blanket you notice that it’s completely wrapped in bandages too.

“H-How bad?” you ask.

The nurse sighs. “Your abdomen was crushed, along with multiple ribs. It’s… it’s a miracle your spine wasn’t cracked. But… what’s most amazing, is how well you’ve healed. You should consider yourself very lucky!”

Wait. That bad? How the hell didn’t you pass out from the pain alone? In fact, how the hell were you able to move at all? Many questions that for now remain unanswered.

Before you could answer, however, a stranger appears in your room, wearing an unfamiliar uniform.

“Nakashiri Koharu, you have been summoned by the Central 46 for hearing and testimony related to the hollow attack incident on the academy field trip.” The man leaves a scroll beside your table and bows to you. “You are to inform and report to the Heavenly Court within a week.”

And just like that, the man leaves.

Shit. Looks like you caught attention, and not the correct kind.

The very first person to visit you, to your surprise, is Instructor Konuma. He looks like he’s about ten years older now than what you saw him before, leaving you to wonder just what has happened.

“I see you’re alive and kicking,” he tries to give you a cheeky grin, but he only gets halfway there. “Here, I brought you something.”

He puts a wrapped package on the table beside your hospital bed.

“It’s.. well, you know, the thing you asked for.”

“Thanks,” you give him a light smile. “I’m glad to see you’re okay too, ero-sensei.”

Konuma’s smile turns into frustration and he puts a finger to his lips, whispering ‘shhh’ to you. “Come on, not cool!”

“I’m just joking,” you giggle.

Konuma’s face however hardens as he sees the scroll beside the package.

“Shit… they already got to you, huh?”

“You knew this was going to happen?” you ask, to which he nods. Konuma walks over to the window to look outside.

“An Adjuchas-type Menos appearing, and screaming your name is not something anyone can overlook, Koharu. Even if I had tried to protect you by staying silent, there… there were over a hundred witnesses.”

“Sensei,” you ask, leaning your head back against the pillow. “What do you believe happened exactly?”

Instructor Konuma has a hard time finding an answer for you, based on how he’s just staring out of the window, sighing multiple times.

“For starters, there’s what I believe happened, and then there’s what I can say out loud without being dragged off to the Maggot’s Nest. I advise you to learn to differentiate those two, especially now that you’ve caught the Central 46’s attention.”

You swallow hard. “Then what would you say happened?”

“The barrier spells failed, and the large number of students attracted enough hollows to attract even menos-class hollows. You were unfortunate enough to become one’s target.”

“And.. what do you really believe happened, sensei?” you ask him with a sorrowful tone. Konuma clearly considers for a moment whether to answer you, but in the end, he does.

“This is going to bite me hard in the ass, but… I think somebody meddled with the barriers. I don’t think you had any part in it, Koharu, you wouldn’t have come to me otherwise. But,” he sighs once again and turns to face you. “I don’t know what your connection to that hollow was, and my guts say the old geezers at Central 46 will try to find any connection that would…”

The pause is long enough to make you really nervous. “W-Would what, sensei?”

Konuma puts a hand to his face, as it betrays his sadness. “That would incriminate you, Koharu.”

Your heart freezes. You had your suspicions about the Central 46 based on the records Izumi had found and explained to you, but this already reeks of corruption.

“T-Then what am I to do?!” you raise your voice. “What exactly am I supposed to tell them, if they’re bent on putting all the blame on me?!”

“Koharu, calm down,” Konuma comes closer to you and sits beside you on the bed. “You have to keep your calm to get through this. Just… give them a rough picture, and don’t give them any hooks to grab onto, alright?”

“A-Alright,” you nod, a tear running down your cheek. Konuma puts his hand on the top of your head and lightly ruffles your hair.

“You’re a crafty one, Koharu. The brightest student I’ve seen in years. Just now that you have people on your side. You are not alone.”

Good night Trippy!

Looking forward to our trip to the local kangaroo court.
I wonder how our frens (and non-frens) fared during the attack. Apparently more than one Menos showed up. That would make for a pretty noteworthy event, all things considered.
I wonder if the Seireitei Bulletin would like an interview? Koharu's heard about them by now right? Maybe if we get ahead of the curve and make a good impression on the public the 46 won't go for our throat as hard.
>>
We'll continue this session tomorrow and possibly on Tuesday. The exact time will reveal itself tomorrow though. I started writing an update partially now, but to be sure of the quality (what quality?), I'll check it and post tomorrow once I'm properly sober. Stay tuned, folks.

I could make an omake of that, actually. While you were YEETed into the forest, the camp had its own share of problems. In fact, you made it all a tad bit easier by removing the most problematic menos out of the picture.
>Seireitei Bulletin interview
This actually gives me a few ideas... It would be pretty fun actually. But, you should consider it carefully. That's a really quick way to become a known figure, and thus make it harder to be undercover.

“Koharu!” Emika and Izumi scream in joy as they barge in through the door, despite the nurse trying to slow them down. A day has gone by since your instructor came to visit, now it’s time to see your two best friends from the Shin’ō Academy.

“H-Hey girls,” you wave at them and chuckle, but are soon struck with great pain as they both throw themselves on top of you for a hug.

“We were so worried!” Emika cries.

“Y-You could’ve d-died…” Izumi whimpers.

“G-Girls..” you gasp for air.

“But you’re good now, right?”

“E-Everything’s g-good?”

“...”

“K-Koharu?!” they both scream out in panic as your eyes are replaced with swirling spirals. The nurse picks them both up by their necks and reprimands them, telling them that you need space and rest. With swelling bumps on their heads, Emika and Izumi apologize both to the nurse and to you.

“I’m glad you two are okay though,” you sigh in relief. “Nobody wants to tell me anything about what happened in the end.”

Emika and Izumi look at each other, and then down at their feet.

“Most of us were told to keep quiet and let the Shinigami deal with the investigation and public statements,” Emika explains, clearly not liking how it’s all handled.

“W-What did they find out? Did they say anything yet?” you ask, to which both of them shake their heads.

“W-W-We were questioned, b-but,” Izumi stutters, circling her index fingers against each other, “n-no statement’s been r-released.”

This all looks suspiciously like the authorities, by which you of course mean the Central 46, is waiting to question you and possibly pin all the blame on. Shit.

“Izumi, I got you something I promised,” you tell her, to which she’s completely surprised. You nod towards the wrapped package, which Izumi carefully unwraps, and in a heartbeat her behavior changes into that of a crazy fangirl.

“W-W-W-What is this?!” she squeals in joy.

“Your reward for doing your best,” you smile. “The Cutie Honey ones are for you.”

Emika meanwhile blinks. “This is… picture books?”

Izumi nods as she turns to her with the manga in her hands. “I-I can show you! It’s the best thing ever!”

Wait. Oh no. Izumi is going to turn Emika into a mangaka, isn’t she? You have a suspicion that this is but a first step towards something far more sinister.

Meanwhile, Izumi finds the manga you got for yourself. “What’s this?” she opens the book. You extend your hand to try to take it away from her, but it’s too late, as her face slowly turns red at the realization of the plot. You put both of your hands to your face.

“K-Koharu, this… this is amazing! Why didn’t I ever t-think about these possibilities?!”

“Just.. leave it on the table, will you?”

The hassle with the manga continues until you and Emika manage to calm Izumi down and bring her back to this world from the depths of her enigmatic mind.

Silence ensues, where your two friends sit across your bed on stools. You know they are thinking about the events of the camp, and especially your role in it. No doubt they also heard the hollow scream your name.

>>4545882
Canon bleach doesn't really clarify it too well. On one hand it says they don't remember, but on the other hand there are cases where they remember, like the soul of the little boy in the bird that chad kept safe.

For this quest though, generally remembering one's past life is directly related to the soul's strength and potential, and how they got to Soul Society. Those who don't get a soul burial, linger long enough in the void to forget a lot of things before they get drawn to Soul Society. Those who do get soul burial spend a lot less time drifting and it's more akin to amnesia. Weaker souls get permanent amnesia, more resilient ones can regain memories.

>Tell them the hollow was responsible for your ‘death’ in the real world.
I'm leaning towards this. Don't see a reason to be completely secretive with these two. So long as we omit the stuff about Urahara we should be good.

Though I admit I'm not sure how to spin our tale to the C46. If we let even a single tidbit about Urahara slip out to them we're gonna be in deep shit.

Just say he was someone we knew in life who later went hallow. Just don’t mention Urahara or we’re going to get executed real quick

You inhale deeply, and let out a long sigh.

“I can almost hear your thoughts,” you joke, which puts the girls in a more awkward position. “But… I do think I owe you an explanation.”

You urge them to close the door to avoid anything slipping past the room, to any of the nurses.

“The simplest way to put this,” you begin, “the hollow I faced was the one that killed me when I was still alive.”

“WHAT?!” both of them shout, to which you quickly put a finger to your lips and hiss.

“The hollow killed me, yes, but wasn’t able to devour my soul, as I was saved by a shinigami. I can only guess that the hollow became obsessed with finding me and finishing his work.”

Of course, this wasn’t the full truth and it had some strained truths there that could almost be considered as lies. It is a good enough story however to explain this mess without having to deal with stuff they’re not supposed to know.

“T-That’s horrible!” Emika gasps, her hands in front of her mouth, looking like she’s about to cry. “That must’ve been terrifying!”

Surprisingly, Izumi is the one that’s more composed this time. “W-Wow, that’s so similar to t-those manga protagonist backstories!”

“R-Right,” you awkwardly brush that comment off. “But that’s it, really. I would’ve died a second time too were it not for Asato-senpai. He’s the one that dealt with the hollow.”

There’s a knock on the door, which promptly opens.

Ah, speak of the devil.

“Asato-senpai!” all three of you exclaim.

“I came to check up on you,” Asato brushes the back of his head. You can see that Emika is still somewhat angry at him, but considering how he saved you, she has it in her to forget about everything for now.

“Well, here I am,” you answer without much enthusiasm, which he clearly notices.

“Come on, you can at least give some fake appreciation if anything. I could’ve just let the gates of Hell drag you off.”

“Wait, what?” you ask, completely caught off guard. “Hell?”

“Right, you went unconscious at that point,” Asato scratches his cheek. “That hollow’s soul must’ve been extremely bad in life. The gates of Hell got summoned to consume its soul as it died, and the gust of wind almost took you with the monster. Be happy I rescued you.”

You gulp. Just like that you could’ve gone to Hell? Holy shit.

“W-Well, thank you, Asato-senpai-” you express genuine gratitude this time, but are interrupted as somebody approaches him from the corridor, a voice very familiar.

“Junichi, there you are! I’ve been looking all over for-”

The man gets to the doorframe and looks inside, directly at you, completely stunned.

Asato uses this opportunity to elbow him in the stomach. “Jeez, Hisashi, if you keep staring like that at young students people might get the wrong idea!”

“Listen here, you little shit..!” Hisashi tries to regain his composure, struggling to get his breath back.

Pleasantries are of course exchanged, though both you and Hisashi act like you don’t know each other yet, even though you share history. You’re glad to see him, but it’s clearly him that’s more happy and relieved about it.

The four of them spend some more time in your room, making sure to keep you amused. At first Emika and Izumi feel nervous with a Lieutenant of a Division with them. Hisashi and Asato get everyone to relax though, with them being quite the pair, jabbing at each other in hilarious ways whenever possible. You find yourself laughing more than you’ve done in your whole time in Soul Society.

It’s good to have friends.

Night comes, and you drift to sleep, yet your dreams are put to the side as your consciousness enters the familiar island at the center of a lake, surrounded by a forest. The red Shinto-esque pavilion now stands at the island, with Naimen no Daiza’s stone fountain basin standing on top of the tree stump.

“Welcome back,” Celaris bows graciously to you from nearby. “I was quite worried for your wellbeing.”

“Was it that bad?” you ask, to which he nods.

“An average soul would have either died, or become injured enough to wish for death.”

You swallow hard. “W-What prevented it?”

“Isn’t it obvious?” you hear Zilya’s voice from the other side as she approaches the gazebo with her spider legs coming from her back. “Hello, darling. You’re welcome, by the way. Though I’m quite disappointed we didn’t take that fly for a joyride.”

Celaris keeps quiet with his eyes closed.

“It would’ve been dangerous and attracted too much attention, Zil,” you respond to her. “I couldn’t have that.”

“Boring,” she waves her hand.

You sigh.

“Regardless, we’re happy you’re alive,” Celaris answers, glaring at Zilya. “Still, that encounter… it worries me.”

“How so?” you ask him.

“Apart from the outside tampering, I think you… we need more experience to properly work together.”

“What the she-stag is trying to tell you, is that you’re garbage right now,” Zilya blurts it all out, “and all this secrecy isn’t helping things. So the question is, what are you gonna do?”

Your eyes fall slightly downwards as you think. You still have that Central 46 and court case problem on your hands, but should you get through that, what then?

“I’m that bad, huh?” you frown and smirk at the same time. You walk over to the water basin, its water completely still and rippleless, and look upon your own reflection. It’s true that as long as you try to keep your secondary releases a secret, you won’t have proper chances to develop and learn them. On one hand you could try and find a safe space to train, away from prying eyes.

But on the other hand, Captain Aizen offered to help you with this very problem. It kind of seems so convenient too, but you don’t have a choice, do you?

“I’ll write Captain Aizen a letter,” you conclude. “He’s a Captain and he’s offered to help us already, so his expertise should help us, right? Hopefully after this whole disaster with the camp blows over, we can get to proper training.”

Both Celaris and Zilya look and feel satisfied with your decision.

“Good night in that case,” you wave to both of them, and close your eyes.

You awake in the hospital bed, and look outside at the low-hanging moon. The view kind of reminds you of home, of your former apartment in Osaka. You wonder how Akane and Chie are doing especially, whether they’ve been able to move on without you. But, as much as you’d like to reminisce about your time with them, your mind is quickly occupied by what’s to come. Specifically, what you’d have to tell before the Heavenly Court, and what kind of questions they would ask.

If Konuma-sensei’s warning holds, it won’t be easy. Even you understand that you could become a very convenient scapegoat for the camp’s failings.

I’ll finally wrap up this session with this, as I’ll need to prepare for the upcoming trial for you guys. I highly encourage you to discuss and speculate about what Koharu may be asked (accused?) at the court, as well as possible responses to those. I will use them as much as I can and they can potentially lower your roll DC’s and crit thresholds.

Expect updates this time to character sheets and social links, I’ll do them during this week. If I get the time I’ll do a few omakes too, such as how different folks survived the hollow attack on the camp, as well as a Chie-omake I’ve had in mind.

Next session should be normal, so Saturday + Sunday, 15:00 UTC onwards on both days.

I’ll be around to answer any questions, comments or anything else for that matter! Thanks for participating.
>>
Obvious questions Koharu will receive:
1: Why and how did the Hollow know Koharu's name
2: How did a student survive battle with an Adjuchas-level Hollow

The C46 are most likely going to try and accuse Koharu of tampering with the barrier and/or luring the group of Hollows to attack the camp.

That's all I've got for the time being, it's late for me and I need to sleep soon.
Gonna try to come up with more at a later date.
>>
>>4546086
>They may also wonder how he was able to achieve shinkai so soon and how he was able to sense the spirits for soul burial. The whole incident with the warthog pseudo hollow and us basically pretending to give a pretend rogue shinigami amnesty can also bite us in the butt.
>>
>>4546086
Need to learn asatos story before talking to make sure they're are no contradictions if they ask about the fight.
>>
>>4546975
Alternatively, could preemptively blame the concussion for having a bad recollection after the first exchange and defer to whatever Asato said.
>>
>>4547025
Bad idea, claiming faulty memory leaves the truth open for others to manipulate.
>>
Okay, I thought of a point that can be used against Koharu pretty badly in the trial:
Where did Koharu learn to use Hakuda and Shunpo *before* being admitted to the academy. Koharu being admitted mid-semester is no doubt documented, as most likely was the way the instructor evaluated Koharu.

>>4546101
>Shikai
Eeh, maybe? I feel like they'd try to get something out of that if we manage to get the C46 to start reaching.
>Sensing
Koharu's literally just that good and gifted at it, don't really see how the C46 could turn that against us
>Pseudo-Hollow Warthog
While Koharu was just looking out for her team in ending the thing swiftly, C46 may just listen to whatever bullcrap Yukiko spews out purely because she's from a noble family.
>Pretend amnesty
...this CAN bite us in the ass, especially if C46 starts twisting facts.
>>
So what route should we go for explaining the hollow knowing Koharus name.

Way I see it there's like 3 options, play ignorance, tell them the same story we told new friends, or blame it on word hollow power bs.

OMAKE: Lost Future

The lights flash from time to time, and the electric equipment beeps and blips in sync of a heart, the oxygen regulation quietly giving off a noise similar to a vacuum cleaner.

“I’m back!” Chie cheerfully smiles as she steps into the hospital room. “Today was quite a day! You won’t believe the homework we got!”

For over a year the doctors have observed, some with joy, others with pity, as Chie visited your room day after day. She tells you everything: How the school day went, what homework they got, what was for lunch. She even does homework beside you, as if you were both doing it.

“Wow, I never would’ve thought that!”

“Uhhh, this one’s tricky…”

“Oh, I got it!”

Chie’s backpack is always heavy, filled with books, magazines, manga that she reads out to you, sometimes for hours. She even brings food.

“We have your favorite food for dinner today, Koharu-chan, though I did try a different seasoning. I do hope you’ll like it!” she says with her trademark cheery smile. She puts a burrito on a plate on one of the side tables beside your bed, and unwraps her own, before biting into it.

“itadakimasu~!”

Chie just keeps her mouth to the burrito, and falls silent, followed by tears forming and falling down her cheeks, and onto her school uniform.

“Hey, Koharu-chan… P-Please come back… It’s so lonely,” she starts bawling, dropping her burrito and her plate on the floor. “Akane’s always gone too, I-I’m worried… please, please, please, won’t you come back?”

Finally have time to post, for the C48 interrogation we could give them simple half-lie truths for most of the questions they give us, make it seem like we just pissed off the wrong hollow when we were still alive and that cost us our life. We can remember an amount of our past life and it was an ordinary life except that we were spiritually aware and physically weak. On a highschoolers being curious adventure with friends we accidentally stumbled on a weak Mr.Mosquito who almost killed us, something happened, we thought he died until one day he attacked our school and crippled us so bad that we died not that long after. That’s as much as I can think of for any questions involving us and Mr.Mosquito, for stuff involving the camp, our talent, a better explanation as to why he was so hungry to kill us, and how we killed him, I’m not really sure. If you guys can think of ways to improve on this plan that’d be appreciated

Also we may have to reveal our shikai in front of the tribunal if mister pretend defector is anything to go by. He saw one version, those who saw us fight the hollow saw another, we maybe in a sticky situation there.

You are Nakashiri Koharu, a shinigami-in-training, and you’re in an unpleasant mess. Following the aftermath of the field trip to the living world, you have been summoned by the Central 46 to the Heavenly Court. You’ve yet to answer the summons, but now that you are out of the hospital, you have a feeling you won’t have a lot of free time here, despite being given a week. If things go well, you can still meet someone who could give you some advice with the Central 46, before somebody from there will come for you again.

Konuma-sensei already visited you and gave you some information, but perhaps meeting him again would be wise, to straighten out the events and the narrative surrounding the camp, as no doubt you’ll be asked about that.

On the other hand, it was Asato-san who came to your aid. No doubt he’s given his own testimony already about what has happened. Did he tell them about your zanpakutō, about Jorōgumo, or did he keep it to himself?

Hisashi-san is back now as well, and you know he will have your back no matter what, if his reaction upon seeing you is any indication. He is a lieutenant, right? Maybe he can figure something out, pull some strings, or… something. Maybe he could even back you up on the story with Kinji if they ask something about him.

Along with these three, you have a fourth, albeit uncertain option. Captain Aizen has most likely seen all of your zanpakutō states and has shown an interest in helping you develop them. Given his status and apparent intellect, there’s a chance he could help you figure out how to explain your zanpakutō and possibly your powers to the Central 46 without stepping in the wrong direction. But then again, he’s still a stranger to you, and finding a way to talk to him might be challenging.

You decide to find Asato-senpai. Leaving your extra belongings at your dorms, you set out to find him. Fortunately for you, you’re quite good at sensing reiatsu, and Asato’s spiritual presence is just familiar and distinguishable enough that you find him fairly quickly in the 7th Division grounds. Some of the patrolling shinigami do stop you to ask what you’re up to, but don’t hold you off when you tell them you’re looking for their third-seat.

You find him reprimanding some of his division members, who’ve apparently done something wrong.

“W-We’re sorry, Asato-senpai!” one of them pleads.

“Sorry?” Asato says, absolutely irritated, “Oh that won’t be anywhere near enough. You think a single ‘sorry’ would’ve saved our comrade from that pit? Are you seriously that dense?”

Asato continues to reprimand them, but this time with his fists by almost caving their skulls in. They quickly leave once the message sinks in.

You make a mental note for yourself to not to get on his angry side.

“Koharu?” Asato finally notices you behind him. “You got out of the hospital that fast?”

“Y-Yeah, I got lucky, I guess,” you say as you scratch the back of your hair. “I’m actually here to ask you something, but…”

“But?” Asato asks, but notices you looking around at the other shinigami tending to their business, and nods. He leads you to one of the many buildings on the division grounds, where you have the privacy you need.

“So what is it you wanted to ask?”

"I assume you've already testified to the Central 46?" you ask.

"That's correct," he nods, adjusting the pillow underneath him.

“And?” you ask with a worried expression. “What exactly… did you tell them?”

“I told them what I saw,” he sighs, and you feel like heavy stones were put in your belly. “I told them that I found you barely hanging onto life as that hollow rampaged and was about to kill you.”

“And then..?”

“I battled and killed the hollow, the gates of Hell were summoned, dragging the hollow’s broken soul into it,” he continues his explanation, with his eyes closed. “That’s how it went, right?”

“R-Right,” you gulp. Looks like he kept the information on the bare minimum with some believable lies. “And my zanpakutō?”

“What about it?”

“N-Nothing…” you shake your head in relief.

“Just… just to be sure,” you ask, “w-what exactly did you say about my zanpakutō?”

Asato sighs, and glances at your soul cutter sword.

“Naimen no Daiza? I wasn’t exactly asked about it, I did say that I crossed swords with you. You yourself don’t know its power yet, so I didn’t have much to tell them either.”

Weird. Why is he talking like these are the things that actually happened, even with you? Is he afraid that somebody is listening in on your conversation? You extend your senses, but you can’t detect any presences nearby, you’re definitely alone. Is this some sort of a precaution?

You go with it and nod. “Y-Yeah, that’s true.”

“You should go now, though,” Asato rises up from his seat and starts to walk for the door. “I’ve got work to do.”

Outside the building, you stand for a moment to think. As much as Asato tried to remain calm, you could sense that he was worried about something. You both have hollow-related weirdness within, which you both want to keep a secret, but this feels like there’s more to it than meets the eye.

Just what is it that’s bothering him?

Then, you sense an unfamiliar presence closing in fast on you. Clearly your ‘escort’ to the Heavenly Court.

“Nakashiri Koharu,” the messenger arrives, in that weird outfit and a helmet or mask that covers half of his face, “I’m here to take you to the court. Please follow.”

You sigh and relent. It’s time.

As much as you’d want to save time and just flash step to the place, your escort insists on walking there. Sure, you get some ample time to think about what you’re going to say, but in the end it’s way longer than that. Enough to get bored, and enough to start dreading what’s about to come.

Already here, the Central 46 wish to put you in your place.

Finally, arriving at the designated area, there is a doorway guarded by two people.

“Zanpakutō,” one of them says in a monotonous voice.

“Excuse me?” you ask

“No zanpakutō are allowed past this point. You are to leave them here with us,” the other one explains and puts forward a hand expectantly.

You can see how this is a problematic spot for many shinigami, given how much of their power is sealed within their zanpakutō, but yours is much different, occupying only a small portion of your soul, more like a catalyst than an engine.

Nonetheless, parting with Naimen no Daiza doesn’t feel like a good idea, even with your alternative means of defense, hakuda and kidō.

“There better be not a single scratch on it,” you say as you reluctantly hand your zanpakutō over. “I hope you know what a zanpakutō means to us.”

Of course, it’s a bluff, but a believable one given how zanpakutō spirits normally embody a core aspect of a shinigami.

“Rest assured miss, we’ll take good care of it,” the guard says as he takes the blade in its sheath. “It’s our duty. You may pass now.”

Past the gates are stairs. A long, long set of stairs which you descend into almost pitch black darkness, only illuminated by a few lights here and there. This whole place creeps you out.

After a solid ten minute descend, you finally arrive at the end. The room you are in is darkly lit, that is until a bright light is shined right at you from the top. It’s an octagonal room, with two or three floors, and you can sense people sitting around the edges, behind weird planks of wood with numbers on them.

“Nakashiri Koharu, you have been summoned to answer our questions about the recent Shin’ō Academy expedition disaster. Do you understand?

You gulp as nervousness takes a hold of you.

“Yes.”

“Good,” a different man speaks now, “you are to testify on the events of the disaster and answer our questions. We remind you that lying is treason, punishable by death. Do you understand?”

“Y-Yes…”

“Now, recount your whole time in the living realm during the camp. Do not leave out any details.”

You begin with the start of the camp, with entering the living realm, getting accustomed to the place, the camp, the forest. You recount the first task of finding artificial souls and performing soul burial. That’s when the first question comes in.

“How did you find the artificial souls so quickly?” an older woman asks from high above.

“Reikaku,” you answer, “I’m very good at it.”

“Where and how did you learn to use it?” the earlier man asks.

“Provide evidence,” a high-pitched voice asks from the higher floor.

“What?” you ask, baffled.

“No questions! Only answers!” another one shouts in response.

“H-How do I even provide evidence for it? I-”

“Answer the question!” the same person keeps shouting.

“I don’t have any!” you grit your teeth.

“How long did you live in the Rukongai?” the man who addressed you initially asks.

“Six months,” you explain, a drop of sweat flowing down your temple.

“In the district of the same name that you took for your own?”

“Yes, Nakashiri, 55th West District.”

At that response, there’s some murmuring among the ‘judges’.

“Continue recounting the events of the field trip.”

You explain your run-in with the boar-type dummy hollow, and how you were interrupted by your classmate, and how you got rid of the hollow despite the interference. And that’s where the next part of the Central 46’s interrogation continues.

“How did you dispose of the dummy hollow?” one of them asks.

“Hakuda,” you respond.

“And where and how did you learn hakuda?” the high-pitched voice asks.

“Again, in the Rukongai, by watching Shinigami,” you respond, quite nervously.

“Provide evidence,” the high-pitched voice again demands. Looks like this person is out to get you one way or another. But this time, you do have something to offer.

“There was an outpost near my district, Fort Tateyako. I used to go there and watch,” you explain.

“Did you learn shunpo this way as well?” a deeper voice now questions you, to which you nod.

“Yes, alongside it, though it was harder.”

“Is there anybody who can confirm this?” the voice of the first person to talk to you asks.

You try to think about it, but your mind’s a nervous wreck right now. You could mention Ichida Jiro, the 11th Division guy with whom you sparred, but you don’t know how exactly this would work out.

“...No,” you say bitterly.

As much as you’d like to have something to respond with, such as the 11th Division brute, you remember just in the nick of time that the first time you met him, within the first few days you entered Soul Society, you already used hakuda and shunpo against him in your match for food.

The members of Central 46 again murmur amongst themselves for a moment before ordering you to continue recounting the events of the field trip.

The next noteworthy event was the stray hollow that had somehow entered the camp zone, which Heizo pursued. You consider what to say exactly, since you didn’t check up with Asato what he told about this incident. You decide to go with as much truth as possible, leaving out the details you don’t want them to know.

“My friend was worried, so we rushed to find Heizo-san. Fortunately, by the time we got to him, he had managed to defeat the hollow.”

The people interrogating you once again murmur.

“You disobeyed orders by leaving camp, is this correct?”

“We left the camp, yes, but-”

“She is clearly suspicious!” one of the ‘judges’ shouts.

“I concur,” two more voices speak out their minds.

“We were worried for our comrade!” you exclaim, “We were taught to act, not neglect!”

“That is admirable,” the voice of the man who started this whole questioning session responds, “yet the fact remains. You disobeyed orders, and left the camp of your own accord, without supervision.”

You bite your lower lip. Shit. This isn’t going well.

You continue your recollection of events past this point, with Asato violently giving Heizo a lesson about heroics. It’s ironic too, considering how your own actions to leave camp are what Heizo was publicly humiliated and beaten up for.

Of course, you don’t mention Urahara communicating with you during this time, so you get on with your task of finding Asato-san, who was acting as a deserter. You keep the details to a minimum, with just you attempting diplomacy, and then finally fighting until you manage to apprehend him.

Fortunately for you, the Central 46 aren’t that interested in those events. Whatever Asato-san told them has deflected possible problems for you.

“Go on,” one of the members urges you to continue.

“Then it was watch-duty,” you explain. “Konuma-sensei wanted me to continue with it because of my reikaku.”

“And then?” another voice asks.

“Then came the fateful night when I noticed something was wrong with the barriers,” you continue. “I ran to find Konuma-sensei as quickly as I could. He went into this tent with this… white orb.”

“Did you do anything to the orb?” the high-pitched voice demands.

“No?” you say pleadingly, “Konuma-sensei was the only one near it, and used some kidō on it. Then it stopped glowing and cracks appeared on it.”

Now there’s loud murmuring in the hall and even occasional shouting and debate among the Central 46 members themselves.

“SILENCE!” The first, and nicest to you voice speaks. “Continue.”

“Then, the hollows attacked,” you sigh, “and everyone either mobilized or panicked.”

“And what did you do?” the older woman’s voice speaks.

“I went to find my friends, of course, Emika-san and Izumi-san,” you say, after which you recount the explosion and how the hollow who caused it screamed your name.

Accusations and debate fill the room right away, until the same man who silenced the room is forced to silence it again.

“You know what type of hollow this was?” he asks.

“I heard it was a Menos,” you answer.

“Why did this hollow know your name?”

“I… I can’t be completely sure,” you begin, trying your best to keep yourself together, as well as the act. “But the hollow looked and sounded similar to the one that… killed me in life.”

Almost everyone exclaims and starts asking questions on top of each other in a cacophony, until they are again silenced.

“Elaborate,” the older woman demands.

You recount vaguely your life in Osaka, feigning haze and some amnesia about it. How you were physically frail, could see spirits, how you stumbled upon this hollow and how this hollow destroyed the school you were at, including your body; how in the end, a shinigami forced this hollow to retreat.

“What connection are you implying with this?” one of the voices asks.

“Parts of my memory came back after the hollow attacked the camp, “ you lie, “I think that hollow made an obsession out of… finishing the job, to devour my soul.”

The court again murmurs among themselves.

“There are indeed records of an incident like you describe in Osaka,” the familiar voice that has kept the court in order speaks. “Do you remember who this shinigami was, and if this shinigami may confirm your claims?”

Once again you have a choice: You could mention Hisashi. He could back you up on this and make your case more believable, but on the other hand, you don’t know how much he’d tell the Central 46 were they to question him. You really hope he’s not dumb enough to mention Urahara in any way if it’d come to it.

“N-No,” you respond bitterly, “but I think it was a he, and he had black hair. I.. I don’t remember much about it all.”

“Can you describe the hollow’s appearance?” somebody new now asks, and you oblige. There’s not much to tell other than average hollow features, but the mosquito-nose-like mask is identifiable enough that you mention it.

“Continue with the events of the camp,” the most pleasant of them says.

Past that point you just recount your attempts to stall for time with shunpo, but ultimately getting hit and flung out of the camp and into the forest. You omit the parts between that and Asato’s arrival, just stating that you were ready to accept death with no power left in you.

The room is silent, and strangely enough that silence feels even more nerve-wracking than when they were bickering and shouting.

“It is extremely lucky to survive even a single attack by a menos-class hollow,” one of them states, “let alone leave the hospital after only a few days.”

“She must be hiding something!” the high-pitched voice shouts.

“There are no leads for that, number 19,” the same man responds. “However, if there is something you’d like to tell usl, Nakashiri Koharu, now would be the time.”

Once again you feel the full weight of everyone’s attention on you. While the Central 46 is out to get you and the one called ‘number 19’ is clearly trying to make you suspicious, at least one of the more authority-wielding members is shielding you somewhat.

“No, that would be all,” you say and give them a polite bow.

“Very well. We hereby give you an official warning, which may facilitate further sentencing if you are summoned here again.”

You swallow hard. You want to protest, but your guts are telling you not to, else you give them further reason to continue.

“You are dismissed, Nakashiri Koharu.”

Your escort takes you back to the stairs that you descended in the first place. Going upwards is much, much harsher, like climbing from a pit that is trying to pull you in constantly. It leaves you to wonder if this is also designed on purpose, to make anyone coming down here feel like discarded trash.

By the time you get up the stairs, you’re out of your breath, ready to fall down. Your escort is polite enough to help you stand at the end. Even though you left your frail body behind, you’ve still got work to do with your physique itself.

You have managed to avoid any larger problems with the Seireitei’s governing body, the Central 46, for now. You’ve no idea what a warning exactly entails, nor what it can lead to, so you make a mental note to ask Izumi about it sometime. If somebody knows about this stuff, it’s her.

Returning to the academy grounds and your dorm feels weird after these events and the hospital, but you’re glad that things should be down to normal now again. To alleviate the stress, you read through the manga that Konuma-sensei procured for you, finding it quite to your liking. You wonder for a moment how did this object even end up in a.. spiritual state. Is it the same for everything else, just like humans? Can you… rip out the soul of objects? Or was it copied somehow? Many questions, too few answers.

Remembering your promise to Celaris and Zilya, you write a letter to Captain Aizen. If he really meant what he said, Aizen’s the one who would be able to help you further your zanpakutō’s development.

During the next few days you notice something particular, thanks to your good senses. At first you thought nothing of it, but the more it bothered you, you checked it with Senzen. There is a presence shadowing you now, some distance away, hiding, but always watching.

Surveillance. Damn it. Looks like you couldn’t get out of this mess just like that.

School continues somewhat normally now, but it’s the end of this academy year, with the division recruitment results almost here. Although the field trip was cut short, it seems that you, Emika and Izumi have all been given a good mark for it, meaning that you are eligible for selection into the Gotei 13.

The same can’t be said however for those, who died during the attack, for which a memorial was held while you were in the hospital.

Finally, the day comes when the results are revealed to your class. Of course, your class being first-year, nobody is selected.

Except you.

You haven’t said anything yet, but you’re staring at the paper form, which has a bunch of stuff you don’t really understand, but it does have some clear differences to what Emika has: a lot of black ink. You specifically make out the 5th Division insignia.

“Aww, oh well, this was expected, right Koharu-chan?” Emika laughs, until she turns to look at your serious expression, and then at your paper.

“EEEHHHHH?!?!?!?” she shouts so loud, that the whole class turns to look at the commotion, some however quickly deduce what the situation is.

“K-Keep it down, Emika-chan!” you whisper to her, but the damage is done. People are now flocking to you to see, others are bawling and shouting about ‘unfairness’, and the nobles especially feel like their pride got devoured by a hollow.

It gets bad enough that your class instructor, Ōnabara-sensei has to intervene and forces everyone to get back to their seats.

Now that you finally got some peace, you and Emika look over your form together.

“A-Amazing!” Emika says, staring at the paper, “You got multiple recommendations!”

True enough, you find that there are multiple people that have vouched for you: Asato-senpai, Konuma-sensei, and… Aizen-taichō. These were enough to overcome the fact that you’re still lacking in the zankensoki levels. Ultimately though it’s still up to you to either accept the position, or finish your training at the academy first.

“I-I’m so happy for you!” Emika exclaims in joy, hugging you.

“T-Thanks, this is still kind of sudden,” you brush her hair, after which she lets go, but avoids eye contact. You then realize that she’s doing her best to hide… sadness?

“Emi-chan, are you alright?” you ask, to which she just keeps nodding.

Wait, you’ve seen this picture before. In an instant, you are flooded with the memory of spending your last night in Osaka with Akane and Chie.

“Emika, I-I,” you begin, trying to find the right words as your memories push some tears into the corners of your eyes. “I’ll visit you, a lot, I promise! Don’t even think you’ll get rid of me this easy, alright?!”

Emika musters a chuckle out of herself, a good sign you think. “Promise?” she says, and extends her right hand’s pinky towards you. You bring your own pinky to it, and wrapped together shake them lightly.

“Promise!”

The academic year ends with a grand ceremony where new shinigami are given their shihakusho, the shinigami uniform, with the division insignia embroidered on the inside. Otherwise, it’s quite a boring thing where you have to stand in place for hours, but you do find comfort in looking at your friends, Emika and Izumi, in the rows of spectating students that did not get chosen this year. You do however feel the angry gaze of Yukiko from somewhere, her venomous envy practically leaking into the ceremony room. You sigh, shaking your head.

After the ceremony, all students have days off of the academy, though it’s not like anyone wants to leave the Seireitei other than some of the nobles with family manors outside the walls, and higher nobles going to their own respective mansions within the Seireitei itself. Most just continue to train as is, but since there’s no attendance anywhere, many take this as an opportunity to loosen up.

For you, it’s mostly packing what little belongings you have to ready yourself for another change of scenery.

As you go over your clothing, you find something nab at your finger.

“Lizzy!” you exclaim, but quickly hush yourself, and take the tiny lizard hollow in your hand, and whisper. “I thought I lost you somewhere!”

The lizard just wags its tail, lightly opening its mouth. You just end up brushing against the… nose of its mask or something, before putting Lizzy in your sleeve. “Can’t have you wander off again, now with me being watched.”

You doubt that you’d need to move to the 5th Division grounds right away, so you could do whatever you’d like here at the academy. Maybe even celebrate your ‘graduation.’

You decide to go with the girls. While you did promise to visit Emika, and by extension Izumi, you have no idea just how much (or rather lack of) freedom you’ll have once you join the division.

You gather the girls for a ‘girls night out’ and explore the Seireitei’s more hospitable areas with bars, food stands and some shops. They’re all very traditional and old-style, but it’s good enough for you. A thought crosses your mind though: while you’re technically sixteen, will anybody even bat an eye if you… buy alcohol? Since this is a celebration, surely it would be fine if…

You brush that thought aside for now and go into one of the food and drinking places, aptly named ‘The Baked Boar’. What a weird name.

The interior is quite nice, consisting mostly of wood, built in a very old and traditional style. This is probably going to be expensive, but it’s an occasion that is worth all of your savings. It’ll cheer up the girls too, you think.

“Wooow, look at all the different kinds of food they have!” Emika exclaims as she looks at the menu.

“A-Amazing,” Izumi gasps as well.

“Well, uh,” you say and think to yourself for a moment. These… these are all average stuff you’d find in most restaurants in Osaka. Figures that if the afterlife is hundreds of years behind of the living realm, their food would be as well.

You all choose different types of dishes, with Emika daring this place’s ‘signature boar steak,’ Izumi trying the onions-grilled salmon, and you just take the fried tofu.

“Would you like something to drink?” the owner of the place asks at your table with a grin.

The three of you exchange glances, and it’s clear you all have the same idea.

“Actually, a bottle of sake, please,” you nod with some nervousness. “It’s an occasion, you see…”

The owner looks at your uniforms. “Ah, a fresh graduate! Well, then, don’t be shy, the first bottle will be on the house! Congratulations, miss!”

“F-First bottle?” you whisper in confusion, and find a traditional, white bottle filled with sake and three cups in front of you.

“W-Well, shall we toast?” Emika laughs awkwardly as she picks up the sake bottle and starts pouring in each cup.

“R-Right,” you take your own cup, now filled. You’ve heard about boys in your former high school smuggling alcohol and trying it, but you never dared to do anything like that back then. But here, there’s clearly no laws prohibiting this, especially inside the Seireitei. How does age even work in this place? If people don’t even age the same way, what exactly does that mean for you?

“For Koharu-chan’s graduation! Kanpai!” Emika raises her cup and brings it forwards.

“K-Kanpai!” Izumi does the same, and you follow through with it as well.

“Kanpai!” you say, and down the liquid.

Your throat burns, and your head spins for a moment. What is this stuff, and how the hell is it affecting you this much?

Food arrives shortly, and you all dig in, with another set of sake cups.

“So delicious!” you all exclaim in joy, music to the owner’s ears. Alongside you, it doesn’t look like Emika or Izumi handle the drink very well.

“Koharu-chaaan,” Izumi begins, moving her chopsticks around, “Thanks again for the manga, I loooved it! But I need more, more…! Please, can you get me more?” she pleads, rocking against you on the sofa.

“S-Sure?” you respond without much thought. “What would you like?”

That was a bad question, very bad. As right away, Izumi opens up about her deepest manga desires, the locked, dark part of her that you wanted to believe didn’t exist: yaoi.

“I just love it soooo much! Kyaah!” Izumi squeals as she no doubt pictures some obscene scenes in her head. Emika is trying to act like everything is normal, but you can see her face is flushed red the more Izumi describes various things about it.

“L-Look, Izumi, please stop, someone might hear you…! I’ll get you the manga you want, just please, stop!”

With the emergency over, you return to eating, and this time you pour the cups, partially to alleviate the embarrassment you endured just now. Wait… why does the bottle feel like it’s full? You shrug it off, and the three of you resume your drinking with another cheerful “Kampai!”

Shit. This stuff is going straight to your head, really hard.

“Koharu-chan,” Emika says and has a hiccup right away, pushing a laugh out of you and Izumi, much to her embarrassment. She lightly pushes against you first with her hand, but ends up more or less ‘falling’ on you. “Come on, that’s not nice..!”

“Hey, what.. what was it like, your life? In the living realm I mean?”

You blink in a haze, and start recounting it in your head, not exactly realizing that you also spoke out loud.

“Well… the first fifteen years I spent at a Shinto shrine, which was really, really boooring,” you say, “my body was soo weak I couldn’t do much. When I finally had the strength and will to leave for high school, I died.”

Both girls hug you from the sides, as they start bawling. “That’s soo sad…! Waaah, Koharuuuu…!”

“Y-Yeah,” you say “I wonder how my friends are doing… if they still remember me.”

You don’t notice it at first, but tears start flowing down your eyes as you think about Akane and Chie. How are they doing? Are they safe? Are they helping each other? You really hope Urahara keeps his promise too and ensures their safety.

“You’re such a poor girl!” Emika bawls.

“Technically a boy,” you say, before putting a hand to your mouth, realizing the bomb you just set off.

“WHAT?!” both Emika and Izumi exclaim, shaking the establishment partially.

“I-I-I can explain…!” you wave your hands, but Emika and Izumi have none of it.

“That can’t be right!” Emika points at you, then the finger lowers towards your chest. “W-Wait… Izumi! Hold her!”

“W-What are you doing?!” you protest, but Izumi already has a hold of you from behind, and Emika reaches out with her hands towards you. “We slept in the same dorm…! You can’t be for real..!”

Your high-pitched scream rings even outside the restaurant.

The end scenario is you sitting in the middle with a blank face and untidy clothes, Emika with a shocked expression, and Izumi with a red-as-a-tomato face.

“D-Don’t be mad, okay?! Nothing’s changed!” you pout, trying to put your clothes back in a tidy manner, but having trouble with it.

“I-It’s fine… I can’t marry anymore…” Emika blanks out, but you shake her. “Emi-chan, snap out of it..!”

“Y-Yeah, you’re right, all’s good,” Emika smiles as she grabs the sake and starts pouring again, still partially blanked out. Now Izumi starts bothering you.

“Ko~ ha~ ru!” she leans towards you, “You’ve avvvoided one question oooone too many times now… who is your type, hmm? I need to knoooow, especially now!” she practically purrs. “Asato-senpai? Konuma-sensei maybe? Heizo-san?”

At the last name Emika throws a piece of salmon at Izumi with a completely red face. “Yes, Koharu, I’m interested too! Just who are you into?!”

In the name of Reiō, what have you gotten yourself in?

Run and hope they're too drunk to remember when we see them again

Alternatively, we could claim something so outlandish as our "type" that there is no way for the two of them would take it seriously.

“I…”

“Yes?” the two move closer.

“I-I…”

“YES?!” they demand.

“I-It’s you!” you hastily blurt out, followed by more awkwardness, blushing and confusion for Emika and Izumi.

“I-I gotta go!” you exclaim with a completely red face, and with a drunk shunpo exit the place, fortunately through the entrance arch without breaking anything.

“KOHARU!” both of them shout and try to follow, but end up with their faces in the food due to your shunpo’s recoil.

You just keep on going, but everything’s fading out into black, and all sounds blur together. Where you are, what’s happening? You lose track of it all...

>Meanwhile

“Another day, another case of fuck the C46, am I right buddy?”

“I’ll drink to that,” Asato raises his cup to Hisashi’s, and they down the burning liquid. “Ahhh, much better, I needed that.”

“That bad, huh?”

“Yeah. I fucking hate those stairs to their court, and even more I hate listening to those gigantic, weak-ass, good-for-nothing, slimy bas-”

“Shh, it’s okay, Asato, it’s okay. You’ll die eventually anyway,” Hisashi nudges him.

“Get fucked, assface,” Asato retorts and downs another cup.

That’s when they notice a ruckus behind them across the stall, where somebody has crashed into a bunch of wooden crates. They squint their eyes to look, and their jaws drop.

“Ko.. Koharu?!”
“Ko.. Koharu?!”

“Heey, booyys,” you mumble as Hisashi and Asato pull you up from amidst the broken wood. “Fancy seein’ you ‘ere..!”

“K-Koharu? Are you drunk?” Asato asks, unsure what exactly to do here.

“Did you hurt yourself?” Hisashi asks.

“Ohh, Hisashi-kun? Long time no see, it’s been almost too long…! I thought you promised to find me..!”

Asato blinks and looks at Hisashi. “What’s she talking about?”

Hisashi however just shakes his head furiously. “N-No idea… anyway, we should get you somewhere safe, Seireitei isn’t a good place for drunk girls..!”

“Y-You dummy, I’m not-” you speak, however Hisashi picks you up. “H-Hey, put me down, I.. I can walk,” you mumble out while flailing your hands around, occasionally slapping his face.

“Just.. calm down, damn it,” Hisashi growls.

“Wow, look at you all serious, a true gentleman here to save the day,” Asato pokes Hisashi’s vulnerable side, now that his arms are occupied.

“Oh, whaat? You jealous, Asato-sen~pai~?” you lean your head back to look at him. “You gonna let him take the lead again, third-seat?”

“W-Why you little…” Asato clenches his fists.

You don’t remember much of how the night goes by, but the next morning you wake up with a massive headache in your dormitory. Neither of the girls remember how they got back either, and when you ask Asato and Hisashi, they keep their mouths completely shut about everything that had happened.

You try to figure out why, but can’t find a reason.

Odd.

And that’s where we’ll end this session. Thanks for playing, hope you enjoyed this one. Comments, questions, as always all welcome, I’ll be here to answer them.

Next session next weekend, more details on that though later. We’ll have a new thread most likely.

Have a good one.

I was 50/50 you’d bump into Asato and Hisashi, or Shunsui. A coin flip resolved it.

Schedule update! Next session will be on Sunday, same time 15:00 UTC, and we might continue on Monday. I'll try to squeeze in char sheet and social links updates somehow, but I got a few errands to wrap up at the university.

How did this quest get through 4 threads without anyone mentioning it's inside the German Hollow Quest universe?

Also thanks for somehow summoning Spookyng back to existence Trippy.
