Today is a good day. A recent promotion has landed you in the magical girl defense force. Better pay and a chance to move out of your grade 8 housing to a comfier 7. It's a bit of a pain that you have to move to the southwest sector though, you've heard it's a bit of a dump compared to the others. You're stuck here on the tram packed in with a bunch of people like sardines. At least you can hold what you own in the duffel bag on your back so you don't have to make more trips. You look at your own reflection in the window as time drags on and start to think about your situation...

You brush a bit of hair out of your eyes and shuffling a bit on your tired feet. Suddenly though, the train lurches to a stop and you have to hold on to a one of the hand rails to stop yourself from tumbling in to some random business man. Others are less fortunate and fall flat on the ground muttering discomforts. You're a bit confused about why exactly the tram stopped when the sound of screeching metal fills the air joined screams a moment later. There's a general look of panic in the further cars and something is tearing its way through them. You haven't even gotten settled in and it's already time to work. Today might not be as good as you thought it would be...

Choose your archetype
>Classical: Frilly dresses and magical spells. Just like the old cartoons before magical girls were real.
>New age: More reliant on tools and technology to support and augment magical abilities. Comes with a neat scarf.
>Witch : You've made a contract with a magical creature. They provide you with much power, but can be temperamental and have an agenda of their own.

You open up your bag and pull out your tools. A special belt that the association gave you after they discovered your potential for magic. You click it on and as you walk through the crowd rushing past you to get away from danger. Two cars forward you see the problem. Large insectoid creatures that must be seven feet tall at least. You can see four of them looking at you as you enter and more are further up. Their mantis like claws are stained red by their victims which you can see lying on the floor around the car. They let out a horrific shriek before rushing at you with intent to kill. You calmly take your catalyst and click it before sliding into your belt and shouting the activation phrase.

"Henshin!" Your fist blocks a swipe from the front runner and you kick it in the stomach. Pieces of armor and frilly cloth materialize around you as you transform into your combat outfit. The creature stumbles back into another, hissing in confusing and hate as it recovers.

30 - Moderate failure

You move forwards and hit the first with a strong punch shattering its chitinous face. That however, puts you right next to the group. You dodge the first slash from the second mantis, but the third hits you in the side, smashing you into a wall shattering the windows. You draw your sword just in time to block a stab from one of them. Metal grinds as you hold your ground with your back to the wall against this group.

You hit your tap your belt's catalyst and it whines with energy. Pressing your free hand against the aggressor's chest you focus and speak an incantation to one of the spells you know.

"Spark!" Pure electricity surges through your fingers, frying the bug and sending it collapsing back on to the ground. Your sword freed up you sweep low, lopping off the front legs of a second one and quickly rolling to the side to block another strike. The door of the next car is open and you can see three more stumble in. Somewhere outside you can hear an engine roaring nearby and coming closer, before tires skid to a halt.

This is a poor place to fight in, and you've gotten their attention. You jump backwards out the tram to the streets. The monsters move to follow, but as the first one leaps out an axe whizzes by your head, planting itself in the bug's head and making a squishy noise as it slumps over.

You look behind you and see a woman in an elegant dress with long white hair and piercing red eyes behind a set of glasses. She rushes forward and bashes a mantis that tried to gut you while you were gawking with the shield in her other hand.

"You're the new transfer? A pleasure to meet you." She says with a smile. "Sorry for putting you to work so soon, but how about we clean this up?"

The bugs chitter from inside the tram, a large group of six remaining and angry from the death of their kin.

“Alright then, let’s do this.” You nod and sprint in to the fray. You slash a mantis in the stomach and kick it, knocking the creature into the metal wall behind it. The woman retrieves her axe from the dead bug and swiftly twirls to hack off the arm of an attacking one. The two of you work in tandem to push the creatures back and corral them into a small group. Seeing the opportunity you step back hit your catalyst. A jingle plays from your belt as power fills your legs.

“Hissatsu overdrive: Rai-jing strike!” You take a few steps forward and leap up summersaulting into a full body kick. Electricty streaks off your foot as your slam right into one bug, mashing it into another and a third behind it until they finally impact against the tram’s wall. A crack of thunder sounds as bolts fly and metal craters from the force of your kick. You step back and turn just in time to see the other girl sending the final monster’s head tumbling to the ground.

A shimmer of bright light and she’s transforms back into regular clothes. A wrinkled looking suit and tie.

“Nice work, but I’d prefer that you keep the collateral damage to a minimum next time.” She glances over to the now wrecked tram with tired eyes and pulls a packet of cigarettes out of her pocket.

“Sorry about that, I just get a bit excited when a fight really gets started. Not very good at holding back.” You laugh nervously and take off your belt, dematerializing your outfit. “Better that the tram gets busted up than more people get hurt though, right?”

“Don’t worry about it too much. The reconstruction committee will whine about the price no matter what anyways.” She sighs and lights a cigarette and puts a hand out to you. “Katya Vanwell, leader of the south west lower district station.”

You simply smile and shake her hand. “Elizabeth Wyvern, can’t wait to work with you.”

“Really is a shame that your trip got interrupted though... guess I’ll give you a ride to the station myself. C’mon, hop on.” She jerks a thumb back, pointing to her motorcycle. It looks pretty nice, must be high end. You end up sitting behind her awkwardly holding on to her waist as she speeds off down the road.

“So, is southwest sector always like this?” You ask, trying to make conversation.

“It’s pretty bad if you’re not from the upper district. We’re underfunded for what area we’ve got to cover and counting you we’ve got a grand total of four members now. Not that I don’t love the place, I grew up here after all.” It sounds like shes got a lot of complaints about the upper command... “So where are you from anyways?”

“Wanted to make the world a better place than that, eh? Well, maybe you’ll feel right at home here. This place is about as much of a mess only with magic, monsters, and super natural crap instead of crooks.” Katya laughs. “What is it with that place that makes people so scummy? Too crowded?”

“My dad always says that something in the drinking water makes them all violent. We always got these water filters and stuff because of it.”

“That kind of a person, huh?” She smirks.

“Yeah, he was real smart. Always looking after us like that.” You respond smiling. She looks at you with a bewildered expression for a moment for some reason before turning her eyes back to the road And muttering something that you couldn’t really hear.

“Yeah... sounds like a, uh... swell guy. Anyways, we’re here.” The motorcycle slows to a halt, stopping in front of what looks like a small apartment. When you enter the building you can see that the first floor has been converted into a sort of office. There’s not much in the terms of furniture but there certainly is a lot of paperwork spread about. Katya walks over to a desk in the back covered in an excessive amount of coffee cups and a overflowing ashtray and reclines back in her chair

“It’s not much but it’s what we’ve got.” She tosses you a keyring which you fumble to catch. “Your room is on the third floor. You’re free to go there and settle in, but if you’re feeling up to it we’ve got a lot of work to do.”

98 - critical success

What surprises most people is you’re actually very good at paperwork. Most people are baffled by your abilities to sift through legal jargon and get it done in record time. It just comes naturally really. With minimal advisement from Katya you go through each paper. Write a report on that bug attack, send a forum to a team to make sure there’s no more of them, finalizes your transfer... The list goes on and on. Even if you’re good at it, it’s still boring beyond belief.

“Huh, I didn’t expect you to make such a dent in this stuff. Maybe one day I’ll actually have a clean office. I should make you do this some more another time.”

You groan and mumble at the thought. “Why don’t you have clerks to do this stuff?”

“Not in the budget!” She cheerfully replis and pats you on the back. “You did a good job though, you can head out for tonight.”

Looking out the window you can see that it’s already evening. You yawn as the fatigue finally starts to hit you. You head towards the stairs stumbling up to your room and unlock it. You flop on to the bed of your new grade 7 housing and enjoy it for a moment before you start unpacking. More space, a fridge, and most importantly your own bathroom. Soon enough you set an alarm and get in bed to get some much needed sleep.

Next update tomorrow
>>
Feeling refreshed from your sleep you slap the alarm off and hurry to get dressed and ready for the day. You do notice that your room looks kind of plain and sparse. Should probably get some decoration eventually. Regardless you head down stairs to the office and see someone else there besides Katya talking with her. It's a young and especially short looking boy wearing an oversized green shawl. He must be four foot something, at least. The more noticeable feature though is the pair of small pointed antlers on top of his fluffy brown hair. Is he one of those Demi-kin from the outer eco zone?

Katya notices you and waves to come over. "Oh, Elizabeth, you're up. Meet our second member here, Leshi." The boy doesn't really say anything, he just looks at you for a while and gives a non-committal "Hmm"

"How's it going shorty?" You greet him happily. He makes a strangled guttural noise at that, before sighing.

"Wonderful... truly a pleasure to meet you..."

"I never knew there were magical boys though. I haven't seen one before"

Before he can say anything else Katya puts a hand on his shoulder and speaks up. "Yep, it's pretty rare. Most magical girls are a 1 in 1000 chance of popping up, but it's pretty much a 1 in 10000 chance for boys to get the same magic potential for some reason."

"And what do I get for being such a rare species? Nothing, not even that strong." Leshi complains loudly. Seems like a pretty disgruntled guy.

"Better off than a normal person, be happy about it." Katya cuts him off by ruffling his hair, eliciting another grumble and quickly turns to you. "Regardless you came in at a good time. We're going over the work list today." She puts a collection of papers on the desk in front of her and quickly starts listing off details. "First item, A section of apartments has gone anomalous. Usually I send in Leshi to normalize it with our other girl, Pecha to keep him safe for cases like this, but she's off on a trip in the northern sector and won't be back until the evening today. It's not like the building is going anywhere but it would be nice to have him freed up for other work."

She taps another group of files with a bunch of pictures of burnt buildings. "We also have a suspicious number of fires cropping up. I'm starting to think that it's an arsonist roaming about. Look right here." She points at a specific picture where you can faintly see a figure standing on top of a building and facing towards a raging fire. There's an orange shimmer about them that looks off. "I don't like the thought that a magical girl could be running about torching stuff."

"Final big thing is that there's a large number of people going missing over night in this area here." She displays a map with a section of 4 blocks circled in red. "People are starting to get spooked there. It might be good to set up a stakeout and see what's going on."

She shuffles them all back into neat piles and clears her throat. "Never mind that there's always patrolling, investigation, and other preventative work that can be done, but... Who's doing what?"

You decide on your jobs of choice and speak up. "Alright, let's deal with this anomalous apartment first. Don't have any idea how I'm supposed to fix it though. If there's time left I'd like to handle that arsonist case too."

"Just let me handle it and don't let me bite it, alright? Better than dealing with Pecha probably..." The short one mumbles and Katya tosses you a handheld radio.

"Keep that handy and call in if you need anything. Get it done and stay alive, alright? By the way with all that paperwork you got done with me last night I think we can finally move towards getting a partnership with a workshop now. If you've got any suggestions tell me later, I'm making a list of potential partners."

"lets go already!" You look over to the door and see that Leshi is already standing there with a bag halfway out.
The trip is uneventful and you find yourself in front of a relatively normal looking apartment building.

"Doesn't look too weird." You comment.

"It's not the outside that's messed up it's the insides. From what the report from the RAT scout that they sent in the floor plan is heavily altered and that all light is heavily dampened while inside. That's about all before they lost contact, so there must be something pissed off inside." He explains to you while rummaging through his bag. He pulls out a small metal lantern and ignites it before opening the door and walking in. Just like he said the inside looks nothing like a normal apartment. The entrance expands out into a large old fashioned looking wooden foyer. A large staircase leads to an upper floor and around you looms a substantial fog, which coupled with the darkness makes it difficult to make out details.

He holds the lantern out giving you a bit of a better view ahead, and hey as a plus side you can easily look over him. The stairs down the basement are are small compared to the upper floor ones. As you walk down them the creaking floorboards shift and gradually change into stone. When you reach the bottom it expands out into a large circular room with dozens of hallways branching off. When you step on to the floor you hear a slight splash and see that it's covered in some weird viscous black substance. It's almost watery, but not quite. A bit smoky too. The fog isn't as pervasive but the darkness makes up for it and you can hear just how far this place spreads from the sound echoing off the stone.

"Time to get to searching." He mumbles. "No matter what there's always a source to these anomalies. And I'm relatively good at finding them." He takes out something else from a pocket. It's a small bell that he holds in his other hand and starts to ring. It doesn't make any sound, but he seems satisfied with something and starts to walk down a specific hallway.

While you wander through the halls...

“So, what brought you into the whole civil protection career.” You ask him as you plod along the halls.

“I was specially ordered by the Defense bureau.” He mumbles shaking the bell. “Every station requires one person like me who can normalize abnormal things like this so they don’t have to send a team running around fixing junk. I’m from the Old Wood Faith organization-“

“Oh, that weird eco cult all the way out from the cities?” You chime in.

“Not a cult, a religious order!” He snaps. “As I was saying, they wanted some favors from the bureau and so they volunteered me, and since I’m only an acolyte I can’t exactly refuse my superiors.”

“Only in this out of obligation?”

“Yep, one day I’m managing the lodge’s gardens and the next I’m forced into a life and death career in the cities. I hadn’t even used a weapon until six months ago when I joined.” He sounds a bit more sad than the usual irritated tone he has at that last part.

A minute of walking later and the passage opens up into a larger rectangular room. The sludge on the ground creeps along the walls here and in the back you can see a faint figure standing there. You can’t really make out what they are from this distance given how dark it is. Suddenly you start to hear sobbing from all around and the walls begin to seep that same black sludge.

“This must be the source.” He says putting away the bell. “Now we need to deal with it. No telling what it’ll do though.”

“Sorta looks sad doesn’t it.” You mention as you clip on your belt and start slowly walking forward.

“You know how witches happen, right?“ he asks.

You think about it and remember a section on them. “Those happen when someone makes a contract with some sort of magical creature.” You respond with relative certainty.

“Missing the important details. A witch is made when someone with potential that isn’t developed yet is pushed over the edge mentally. They reign those emotions in by creating their familiar out of them and solidifying their catalyst. In other words witches are all screwed in the head, another reason why I don’t like that pink haired menace...” He takes an item out of his bag and flicks it, causing it to unfold into a scythe, pointing it in the thing’s direction. “This is what happens when they fail.”

That’s a bit grim... “This guy must have been pretty depressed then... I feel a little bad about just killing them.”

“I’ve heard a few stories about people talking these things down, but I really don’t advise it. Safer to just destroy them.”

Only halfway into the room and the atmosphere feels choking. The black ooze is a lot colder than it felt a while ago.

Slowly and calmly you walk towards the figure. As you get closer you make out more details. It’s big and hunched over, if it stood up it would probably be twice your height. A thick layer of black sludge covers it and beneath that you see carved stone bound with strange thorned vines. You move up and place a hand on it’s shoulder. “Calm down, there’s no need to be so upset.” You start to speak in a low voice. The sobbing stops for a moment and you continue “I’m sure we can h-“

A sudden impact hits you in the stomach and knocks the wind out of your lungs. You’re sent flying back and tumble through the black ooze a while until you stop. Luckily though it feels like something broke your fall... Then you hear muffled shouting from beneath you and realize what it was. You stumble to your feet quickly and help Leshi back up where he start sputtering and coughing.

“Gah, it’s in my mouth!... Great, now you see why I don’t try this stuff!” The muck covered boy starts furiously wiping at his face as the rooms begins to quake. Massive thorn covered vines rise from the murky depths followed by a number of decrepit statues. At the end of the rooms the colossal mass of stone slowly rises and turns toward you as A sorrowful wail fills the room.

“Alright, you tried talking to it and now we take the second option.” Leshi grumbles at you and you nod, taking out your catalyst and sliding it into your belt to transform.

You sword slides into hand and you begin hacking away at the surrounding vines. The plants writhe like snakes lashing about as you remove them. Next to you see a flash of light and when you turn you see Leshi standing there surrounded by shredded plants. He did say something about being a gardener didn't he... He doesn't look that different in his other outfit either aside from a lot of ribbons and a little deer skull decoration on top of his head.

The vines try to lash out at you, but you've cleared a wide swath, and most can only come within inches of you. The statue horde however comes closer, rattling unsteadily. Some look fractured and fragile while others are sturdy singular pieces of marble. None seem to have good intent though. Further away the Colossus takes a few steps forward before slumping down and making low rumbling noise.

"Alright, I know you're upset and all, but lashing out like this really isn't going to help anything!" You shout out to the golem in hopes of reaching it. The other statues shamble towards you in erratic movements with one throwing a punch. You tuck into a roll and spin low to the ground shattering the legs of those around you. More come in but you hold them at bay, cutting down one every few swings.

"Are you seriously still trying to talk to it!?" Leshi tries his best to follow your lead, but he's clearly less proficient at dealing with masonry than plants. "Now might not be the best time to... Dodge!"

The sudden shout makes you jerk to side, letting you narrowly dodge the jagged rocks that burst out of the ground right under you. The statues are undeterred even if their numbers are culled. Some crippled ones even crawl on despite the damage.

Activating your catalyst you jump up and step on one of the statue's head tensing up as you use them as a springboard and cast a spell. "Jolt!"

Stone underfoot turns to dust and the smell of ozone fills the air as you're propelled forward like a missile towards the main threat. You swing for the fences and hear something break moments before your boots streak across the ground sending a wave of murky water out in your wake.

"That's it, that thing right there!" You hear your ally shout at you. Most of the statues have lost interest in you and the majority of them have decided that he's the better target leading to mostly dodging for his life. "The crystal grab it!" As you turn you see the aftermath. The golem clutches its chest and stumbles a little. You've left a massive wound in its side and near the center you can see the glimmer of a purple gemstone. Rivulets of black ooze drip from the cracked stone and it reverberates in sorrow as sharper outcroppings of marble being to crop up on its body.

"Alright then buddy, you either stop this little tantrum or I'm going to have to stop you myself."

Both of you stand there for a moment and a second later both move. A surprisingly fast fist the size of your torso narrowly grazes you as you dodge to the side catching only a spray of water to the face. You jump their arm and cling on to it, grasping out with another hand and getting a grip on that crystal. "Come on... Just... Give it up!" You grit your teeth and pull at it as hard as you can. Stone jabs at your and grates against your body but you still hold on. Your hands start to go numb when it suddenly begins to feel a lot easier. Gradually it just seems to... Give up and go limp. The marble softens and you tumble backwards on to the ground when the gem unexpectedly loosens. Suddenly the rest of the constructs crumble and fall apart on their own.

"You... Are really something else..." Leshi stumbles over to you panting. "Give it here, before that thing starts to reform." You give it over and he starts chanting something that you can't quite understand. There's a shimmer of light as bands of copper form around the rough gemstone and it gradually smooths into a much prettier form. "Alright, one corrupted catalyst sealed..."

"So, is there really no hope for them?" You sit down on a piece of rubble and catch your breath.

"They're pretty much just a solid mass of unstable, corrupted emotions. Not much human left... I really don't know if I should admire your persistence or call you stupid."

"Is it really that wrong that I wanted to help them?" You ask. The black ooze covering the ground slowly retreats away and the masonry crumbles to drifting dust. A light hazy fog drifts in giving it a real solemn feeling.

He sighs and packs away the catalyst. "No, it's not. I guess If you want to do that sort of stuff then go ahead. I'm just not that optimistic about it. If you try something like that and it goes wrong, then what'll you do?"

"That's my risk to take. You'll never get a girlfriend if you stay a grumpy quitter shorty."

"W-wha... Hey!" You laugh as sputters in embarrassment before just pouting in indignance.

"Anyways, what now? Does it just return to normal or..." You start openly wondering while looking at the increasingly unstable looking environment.

"Yeah... It should be going back to the way it was since there isn't an influence over it." And just as he says that the four previously stone walls fall flat around you like cardboard cutouts, revealing a foggy forest.

"Leshi... This doesn't look like an apartment." You say gawking at the new environment. Trees stretch above beyond your sight and the air has a sweet smell to it. Almost like... Honey?

"This doesn't seem right at all." He starts muttering to himself. "Wait, we didn't see any of this fog at all while we were down here. Is there really..." A droning buzz cuts him off and dozens of small flying shapes circle around you quickly. You feel an intense aura of malice as you make out what they are. Massive hornets, the size of your head.

"INTRUDERS! BRING ME THEIR HEADS MY SUBJECTS!" A horrifyingly chittery voice sings out from above and you see what must be the cause. Something that can only be described as a hybrid between a woman and a bee. She points a long spear at you, her wings beating up a storm and blowing her regal attire outwards.

"Are there seriously two of these things here!?" Leshi cries out swiping a hornet as it makes a pass at him.

The swarm buzzes furiously as it circles the two of you. You can slash one or two out of the air, but there's dozens of them and it's hard to keep track of which one is going to attack. "Is that normal?" You ask a bit nervously.

"Not at all! And don't you dare try reasoning with this one!"

The surroundings become pitch-black and half a second later the sky is filled with streaks of amber light. When day returns lumps of ichor stained chitin and scorched wing fall ground. You're not exactly sure how you did that, but it man did it get you motivated. You're practically shaking from excitement... Or maybe that's the fatigue setting in from the repeated fighting and spell casting, not quite sure. The sound of something significantly larger hits the ground behind you and you see Leshi face down on the ground.

"G-gonna have to leave this to you... Don't think I can feel my legs after that one..." He really needs to work on his stamina.

A sharp pain hits you as a pointed shape screams by and embeds itself in a distant tree, spraying chucks of woodchip everywhere. "IMPUDENT WRETCH, YOU DARE SLAUGHTER MY PEASANTRY?" The Bee anomaly is hovering just above the ground now. She holds out her hand to the side and materializes another spear in hand. Looks like it's a one on one duel to settle these things. She however counters by slapping it aside with her hand, but that's where you get her and grab her hand with your empty one and smile.

"Spark!" Lethal volts drive through her arm giving off a disgusting burnt smell as she convulses in place against your grip. Her right arm spasms and manages to catch you in the side, making you flinch away as another poke dents your chest armor. The two of you jump back and take a moment of reprieve.

Her arm now looks like a piece of charred jerky and her mandibles click furiously at you, hurling insults that you can't really understand. You on the other hand, are really start to feel that spell fatigue. Legs are getting heavy and the sword arm is slow. Your catalyst slides into your sword causing it to split down the middle and crackle with energy. Crouching into a low stance you take a deep breath and hold your blade ready. The only sounds you can hear right now is the beating of wings, the upbeat jingle of your belt announcing your move, and the rapid thumping of your racing heart.

"Hissatsu overdrive..."

With a cry of rage the Bee woman descends at frightening speed and you tense up. You draw and two yellow blurs connect letting off a high keening noise. The heavy fog blows away from the sheer force of your brief clash. Her feet hit the ground dragging furrows across it as her momentum bleeds off and smiles as you clutch the new gash in your shoulder...

"Clear-sky slash!"

And then you smile as her torso slowly slides apart from her legs and she collapses in two pieces behind you. Your transformation undoes itself automatically and you fall backward for some much needed rest laughing with the little breath you do have.

"Did you get them? I can't see with my face in the dirt."

Slowly you see trees wither and crumple. Grass recedes into the ground and tile flooring pushes up from underneath. The building is turning back to normal and man are you tired. Also hungry.

"Does this happen often?" You ask, while the short one on your back finally musters the strength to free himself of you.

"Only about every two or three weeks. Don't worry, you get used to it. Want some coffee?" You graciously accept her offer and sit down on the chair in front of her much to her dismay as you get black goop on it.

"So are there any good food places near here? Because I'm starving." The coffee is sweet relief upon your weary body and you fully enjoy it after dumping a handful of creamer and sugar packets into it.

She stubs a cigarette and sighs. "I know a few. In the mean time, get cleaned up and write a report on what happened."

"I think I'll leave that to you. I need this shower...." Leshi excuses himself and quickly leaves after dumping the two sealed catalysts on her desk, tracking black footprints up the stairs.

"Is he always like this?" You ask downing the rest of your cup and wiping the grime off your hands.

"Oh you should see him after a job with Pecha. It's- Oh speak of the devil."

As she mentions that the bell on the office door rings. The woman you see entering you can only describe as... Pink. Her hair is long braided hair is pink, her hoodie is pink, and even pink eyes. With the big smile on her face you can tell her personality from a mile away, and you're proven right seconds later.

“How about a bar?” You suggest, already writing a... slightly embellished version of your mission. Never let the truth get in the way of a good story.

Hmm, isn’t it a bit early for drinking?” Pecha asks looking at the clock.

“It’s 5 O’ clock somewhere.” Katya says plainly, clearly wanting an excuse to drink. “I know a nice place.”

“So very wise of you boss!” Pecha giggles and you agree for the sake of glorious booze.

She shuffles away her papers and gets up for a quick stretch. “Alright then, get yourself cleaned up. We’re heading out in a few minutes.”

You quickly sort out the report and get changed into less dirty clothes. The best thing about this job that you can say with utter certainty is that you now have a personal shower.

———————————————

The bar she takes you to is very nice indeed. It’s a bar and grill with a warm atmosphere inside. A lot of the furniture is genuine wood, something very rare in this day and age. The four of you are seated in a corner booth and for a moment you question what this establishment actually is for a moment when a bunny eared waitress walks up to take your orders before realizing that they aren’t fake.

The “something special” really sticks out to you and your curiosity demands it. “How about this?”

Katya pulls the waitress closer and whispers something into her ear. She nods and quickly writes something down before taking everyone else's orders.
“I’m friends with the owner. Guy is a master at bartending and can make these amazing personalized cocktails.”

When she comes back with your drinks you can’t say you aren’t impressed. It’s a pale gold that gradually shifts to amber at the top and fizzles with bubbles. The ice cubes floating in it are a vibrant green and shaped like batteries. How did they make something like this so fast?

Katya enjoys a bloody mary and smiles at you while Pecha drinks a viscous looking sugary pink cocktail. It hurts your teeth just looking at it. Leshi surprisingly orders something very hard with an irish whiskey.

You take a sip and it pleasantly tingles down your throat. The taste is sweet with an intensely satisfying sour aftertaste. It’s almost like candy but the warmth tells you it is very alcoholic.

“Should the sassy green child really be drinking?” You ask while enjoying your own glass.

“I’m twenty three damn it!” He glares at you with a look that’s far less intimidating than he thinks it is. The thought that he’s one year older than you is something you’re having a hard time believing

“And yet our little fawn hasn’t grown an inch. It’s a true tragedy.” Pecha sighs in mock disappointment.

“Gah!... I can still handle my liquor better than any of you here.” He grabs his mug and takes a big gulp of it before crossing his arms in anger.

“Oh my, such a bold claim. Are you going to take that sitting down, Elizabeth?” Pecha looks at you grinning smugly, clearly trying to egg you on.

Katya just sighs trying her best to enjoy her drink.

"Alrighty then, I'll call your bluff. Can't wait to see what you look like as a drunken mess." You proclaim, downing more of your drink in response.

"You kids can have your little spat later, the food is here. At least eat it before one of you blacks out." Katya calls your attention to the waitress returning carrying plates of your long awaited delicious food. You eagerly begin devouring your plate of fried fish. If there's anything that your father taught you it's that you shouldn't trust the reptilians in the government and that everything tastes better fried... Maybe that last part isn't as relevant. Still it tastes fantastic on an empty stomach.

Katya has an exceptionally rare steak absolutely dripping with red juices. Why anyone would eat something that hasn't been cooked all the way is beyond you though. Pecha is eating a hamburger instead of just skipping to some kind of dessert, and for some reason is dropping fries into her guitar case every now and then. You were sort of expecting Leshi to have some kind of vegan dish but he has a massive plate of ribs. Not sure how he's going to actually eat it all but he's tearing into it ravenously.

"What are you doing over there Pecha?" You ask, carefully watching for an opportunity elsewhere.

"Just giving Walter some snacks. It would be cruel to not give him anything while we're eating." She responds plainly, dropping another fry in there and you can faintly here a trill from inside.

"You seriously keep a pet in there?" The bait is set...

"It's not a pet, it's her creepy familiar. And you don't need to keep feeding that thing, it survives off your own mana." Leshi interjects, looking up from his plate.

"He's not creepy, he's adorable! You should really learn from his example. Maybe the ladies would find you appealing for once." She responds in feigned offence. The two begin to bicker back and forth as expected and you take your opportunity to snag a small portion of rib away from your small companion. Variety is the spice of life, so why not have a bit more than fish? He won't finish them all anyways.

Katya meets eyes with you clearly watching the whole thing and smirks.

The rest of your meal goes pretty smoothly, and near the end your boss calls over the waitress again and she comes back with a cart of various hard liquors and shot glasses.

"Alright then you two, settle your differences like adults and drink yourselves silly."

"Booze of choice?" You ask, taking your glass.

"Absinthe." He responds, going for an unconventional but particularly heavy one. The waitress takes a bottle and gives you both a splash of the mellow green poison and drizzles a little dissolved sugar into it. The first shot goes down easily with a slightly bitter herbal taste. The two of you quickly jump to three shots each and to his credit, he doesn't look phased in the least. You're starting to feel a bit of a burn as your face flushes a little. By the fourth you begin to get wobbly, and by fifth you feel GREAT. On the sixth you spill a little and it goes down a bit rough. You sputter up a bit of the stuff and look over to Leshi, where he easily takes his. So far he has nothing more than a blush.

"What's wrong, reachin' your limit already?" He says smugly.

"I've lived in a religious farming community for most of my life, what do you think we have to do for fun out there asides from brew alcohol and drink?" He takes another shot of absinthe just for emphasis.

"Don't worry, he got me too when we first went drinking." Pecha adds

"Yeah, and you get way too clingy when you're smashed."

"Oh don't lie, you enjoyed it didn't you?" She smiles innocently, resting her chin on her hands.

"It was terrifying and I thought you were going to squeeze my lungs out. The boss had to pry you off of me!"

"Don't be like that! A lot of boys would kill to get a hug from me. How about I remind you what it's like?" She starts trying to grab the skittish deer and the two begin to squabble again. You just smile dumbly enjoying your buzz while sitting next to the boss. Oh hey, another one of those special drinks. Would be a waste to leave it there... You don't remember much after that, but someone did carry you home. Maybe the boss? Her arms feel real comfy....

The arsonist sounds like something important to deal with. You read up on the files of the case and start putting together all information that you have on it currently, which isn't much.

The summary is that there's been a suspicious number of fires occurring in the lower district. Fires aren't uncommon, but there's already been six this month. No real discernable pattern to when or where they happen asides from the fact that they've been slowly moving inward to the center of the city. Along with that a figure has been caught on picture at every one of these fires. Not the highest quality but you can see that it's a young girl with red hair. That's about it, no other solid connections to give you a lead. The boss thinks that she's a magical girl and if that's the case it's certainly not good. Having a magical firebug running around torching buildings is the last thing you want.

Investigate the witnesses and building burned, go though...ugh... the paperwork for something anyone has missed, see if any lizar- ahem, govement sources have anything of value with their intrusive measures against the privacy of the individuals. If all else fails, we can just go on a regular patrol in the area that the pattern of incidents are leading up to, looking out for ginger girls in the area.
>>
73 - Good result

Okay, nothing to work on so you'll just have to get to it and find it yourself. You walk out into the overcast day and begin your work.

The first step is to investigate the burned buildings and see if anything is amiss. The rubble doesn't really give you any insight since it looks completely normal to you. Next you get more in-depth and start asking questions to witnesses and residents living nearby. You get a few answers. Several say they did in fact see the girl when the fires started, and three of them mentioned seeing her holding a wand. None of them though, know her or where she can be found. One guy says that the devil did it and that they saw a demon looming over the building but you sorta disregard that guy. There's also a belief that the third fire was an accident with a gas line and no foul play was involved.

Around the fifth site, you get something a bit more substantial. A local coffee shop owner says that the suspicious girl occasionally visits his shop. Not daily, but maybe one or twice a week. You look outside and see dark clouds drifting heavily overhead. Is it going to rain?

Maybe a moment of relax- Uh, a stakeout would be a good idea. You take a seat and order some coffee as you begin to wait. May as well get some paperwork done while you're here too. Gotta get the stuff first though, and walking back to the office would be a pain, so getting it by phone it is.

First you call the boss, but her phone seems to be turned off. Probably busy at a meeting or something. Next is Pecha, who seems to have put herself in your contact list. Might have happened in that drunken blur last night. Convenient though, so you call her.

"Hmm? What is it Elizabeth?" You hear her say in that upbeat tone of hers. What's off putting though is the screams you hear in the background.

"Uh, are you alright over there?" You ask, a bit confused.

There's a crunch on the other end and you hear her speak up again. "Just doing some investigation on that missing persons case. It's a little slow going, but I think I'm getting somewhere~"

"Well, I was going to ask if you could pick some stuff up at the office and bring it over to this coffee shop, but you seem kind of busy right now..."

"Oh no, I'm just about finishing up here." You think you hear a wet thud hit the ground there. "I can be over there in a few minutes. I could use a break. See you soon~" And with that she hangs up. Not sure what to make of that so you just try to enjoy your coffee. Twenty minutes later she comes in with a pack of paperwork to chew through and orders a cappuccino. Outside the first drizzle of a downpour begins, and you've gotta say it's pretty alright in here. Has a nice cozy atmosphere.

Another 1d100 Bo3 to see if your luck holds through. Make specific conversation if you want.

90 - Well would you look at that...

"So, what have you learned about that case?" You ask, stirring your coffee idly and filling out forums with your other hands.

"I'm fairly certain that it's an organ harvesting operation lead by one of the local gangs." She says. The coffee cake you ordered arrives and you section it up into three. It's a pretty common thing for criminals organizations nowadays. With modern day medicine and enough new transplants you can live quite along time, so rich people tend to pay out the nose for black-market goods like that. "The person I questioned admitted that they did about half the kidnappings. Now what's left is to raid their base of operations so it should be easy enough. What about you?"

"Waiting for the suspect to drop by." You shuffle a bit of the pastry in your mouth and shove over a picture. "She's a regular here, and I'm just waiting."

"Ah, so that girl right there?" She asks, dropping a sliver of cake into her case and getting an elated chittery noise.

And just like that, the girl in question wanders into the shop. Now that you can see her through something other than a blurry photo you can make out the details. Her clothes look pretty ratty, like she's homeless or at least poor. She has a pair of tiny curved horns and a stubby scaled tail pokes out from under her skirt. It looks like your waiting has payed off.

"Well I think I'll leave you to it. Have a gift before I go." Pecha says, getting up and handing you an umbrella from her case.

"Not going to help?" You ask, a bit disappointed.

"I've got my own business to wrap up. I'm sure you can handle it yourself. Bye, bye for now~" And then she takes out her own umbrella and wanders off into the downpour.

The girl in question doesn't really stay all that long. She buys a bag of coffee grounds and sits a while before leaving. It gives you a quick moment to snap a new picture and begin following her from a safe distance. Eventually your tailing leads you further from the center of the city to the outskirts. Here all the junk and waste of the city is shoved to keep it clean and be processed at a snails pace. This part looks like an extension of the city that got wrecked in a recent catastrophe and the Restoration Committee hasn't gotten to fixing it yet. You follow her through the neglected streets and run down buildings until she stops at one in particular and heads inside.

After waiting a minute you slink inside and find her sitting at a little makeshift campfire trying to cook something. Looks like she really is homeless consider all the random stuff scattered about the room. Clothes, pots and pans, various foodstuffs, and other things.

“Hey, mind if I dry off here?” You ask. She turns around to look at you with suspicion and there’s a long tense silence before she speaks up.

“Fine.” Is all shes says as she shuffles to the other side of the fire to face you. Taking a seat you can see she’s boiling some instant noodles. “Not sharing.”

“Don’t worry, I’m not hungry.” You assure her and wring some water out of your clothes.

“What are you doing here? You don’t look like the type to be squatting in the outskirts.” She still seems very defensive...

"Urban exploring. I'm new around here and I like to explore abandoned places like this."

"Exploring for what? There's nothing but trash and rubble here. Probably monsters further out too. Lousy place for a tourist." She mutters, pouring an ungodly amount of hot sauce into her pot.

"The adventure is what makes it fun. And seeing all the stuff that people leave behind is interesting. The danger is just some extra thrills."

"Sounds pretty stupid." She comments in a deadpan manner. "Must be nice to have the money to screw around so much." And then she begins to shovel food into her mouth. She's really giving you nothing to work off. Like a standoffish clam. Reminds of the kind of punk kids you knew growing up in the west sector. "Well I'm not that rich really... Doesn't cost anything to really do this, and it can be profitable if I find some nice trinkets. Danger leads to opportunity!" You try to make he open up a bit by being friendly. "You've gotta do what you love right? Doesn't hurt to make a profit at the same time either. I grew up in the West sector so I've got plenty of experience wandering around old abandoned places, avoiding getting the crap beaten out of me, and getting the most out of my cash." That last part isn't exactly a lie. You... Mostly tried to stay out of the wrong crowd but it's hard when you live in a place like that.

"I can understand that... I do enjoy my work." She seems slightly less cold to you after that.

"Huh? What do you do?" You ask trying to fish out some info finally.

She looks around a bit shiftily. "Well, let's just say... Contract work." Scooting closer to the fire her eyes meet yours. "Just asking but... Do you have anyone you wanna get back at? Just absolutely despise?"

Trying to find out who's the exact cause of your troubles in west sector is pretty much impossible until you're dealing with the top of the totem pole.

"How disappointing. If you do happen to have anyone whos got those sort of problems though, bring them to me." She smiles. "I can take care of it for a price. Since you're not a paying customer though, I'd like it if you'd leave me be."

Outside you realize that the rain has stopped and only the steady rhythm of droplets dripping off the broken architecture remains. You've worn out your welcome and staying too long might escalate things.

She clearly thinks for a moment before speaking up. "Just call me Lucy."

"Having a nice day?" You ask trying very hard to ignore the shepard in the room.

"Mmm... Boss got out of her meeting with the upper district a while ago and took me off of the case saying she would handle it. It must have gone badly if she's that upset."

"She takes on more work if she's upset?" That doesn't really make sense to you.

"It's her way of venting. I feel sorry for whoever is in her way honestly." Leshi speaks up, now trying to coax his livestock with some leaves.

"Okay what's with the goat?" It's too distracting to ignore. You must know.

"I can keep pets if I want. I already have some chickens and bee's so what's the matter if I get a goat?" He says plainly, now attempting to physically lift a creature about the same size as him to the expected result.

"Okay, mind explaining the logistics of that to me? Where are you putting these animals?"

"In my room. There's a nice place for him right next to the garden." Okay, now he's just fucking with you. No way all that fits in a small apartment room.

"Well, if you're not too busy." Pecha interrupts. "I'd like to ask you something. Do you want to have a little sparring match? The three of you arrive at a plot of relatively clear land in the outskirts. You and Pecha stand a decent distance apart and transform. You would have expected Pecha’s outfit to look more dainty, but it’s surprisingly more like a military uniform. A longcoat, boots and leggings, and a cap, all in black with pink highlights. 59 - Failure

Okay, she's probably baiting you into something terrible so it's best to take things easy. You rush at her intending to fake her out into revealing her hand and-

"Come on out Walter~"

OH HELL THATS A GIANT SPIDER! Pointed black limbs stab out at you from her case, trying to impale you where you stand and forcing you to scramble back. They stop a few feet back, unable to reach you anymore and retreat back inside their shelter. From inside glowing red eyes stare back with pure malice.

"You have such a cute face when you're scared!" Pecha giggles at you, clearly enjoying herself. "You're not as much of a fool as I took you for, but not as smart as you should be either. Aha, enough of that though, I'd like to see how well you dance too~" She reaches into her case and pulls out a firearm and raise it toward you with one hand. It looks like a submachine gun.

"You see why I don't like her now?" The peanut gallery shouts at you.

A spray of bullets fly at you but you try to stay calm while frantically dodging them. There's not many ways you can approach her. If you stay at a distance she's just going to shoot you, and if you get close you have to deal with an angry spider. There's one option you can think of so you hit your catalyst and slide to face her.

"Jolt!" The spell ungracefully launches you toward her at high speeds. You slash out hoping to get her, but she jerks to the side at the last send and you feel something hit you in the side roughly, knocking you off course. When you turn around you see a couple black leg segments pinwheel in the air for a moment and drop to the floor.

"Oh, that's a nice technique. We're getting pretty serious here aren't we? You even hurt poor innocent Walter..." She stows the gun and grabs a new weapon from her container; clawed gauntlets. "I'll have to show you some of my tricks." Even now she's still wearing that smile, but its got a very different feeling to it...

70 - low success

Now this is something more your speed. Just straight up fisticuffs. You raise your arms up and begin to circle with her, throwing punches and dodging as best you can while she does the same. This is something that you can tell she isn't as good at as you. Rightfully so given that you grew up on brawling in the streets with other kids. A punch from the right is blocked and you ready a spell, countering with a left hook.

"Spark!" Your fist contacts her, sending crackles of electricity and knocking her back a fair distance.

"Now that one I felt. I think I'm starting to enjoy this!" Her smile has gone wide and she brushes a hand against her catalyst. "Call shadow..." Pecha takes a wide stance, preparing for something.

83 - Good succe-

If she's going to try something then you'll finish her off before she can do it. Doesn't matter what tricks she has, you'll break through You crouch down and tense up your leg.

"Hissatsu overdrive: Rai-jing strike!"

You raise your leg in a fierce kick that trails with crackling energy and connect right into her side as she lunges at you. There's a moment of resistance, but in an instant her body dissolves into a black mist. In your confusion you feel something grab you by the waist from behind.

"Onryō~"

You still don't quite understand what's happening as your world is turned upside down and then interrupted by blinding pain as your back hits the ground hard. You vaguely see black spines all around you pointing towards your body.

From the sidelines you can hear a certain pest cheering. "And she hits her with the German suplex!"

"Not very cautious are you? Hedging all your bets on one move isn't a very good idea. Care to tap?" You hear her tauntingly cheerful voice from behind you as she maintains a pin.

“I will never su- Agh!” You’re about to proclaim you defiance when a sharp leg jabs you in the ribs.

“I’m sorry what were you saying? It’s hard to hear you speak up.” More begin to stab at you. You begin trying to focus a spell but between getting suplexed and repeatedly poked by a giant demonic spider you’re understandably very distracted by the mounting pain.

“SpaRGH” You half scream and spray lightning all around you indiscriminately. The moment her grip loosens you scramble away as fast as you can and get back on your feet. Wait where’s your sword.

“So very feisty.” You juke to the side as your own sword wizzes past you. She’s slowly walking towards you now with what looks like a hammer polearm.

“How many weapons do you have!?”

“Enough.”

Okay this isn’t looking good. Your body feels like a sack of bricks and she doesn’t seem bothered in the slightest. Pretty sure you’ve got like two to three spells left in you.

As you fight you’ll get better. Developing new spells and getting equipment will help as well. Main reason you’re doing so poorly is from the fact that she has more experience and splurges on gear while you only have about two real fights under your belt and a sword.

Well if there's one thing you know, it's that you should never go out with a whimper. If you go into a fight, you give it your all no matter what. Taking a deep breath, you prepare yourself...

"Jolt!" You launch yourself at her throwing a fully wound up punch. Her feet draw furrows in the ground as the force pushes her back. You do not let up, kicking and punching as fast and hard as you can not giving her a moment to attack. You're getting stabbed all over but you don't care. You grit your teeth and bear the pain until you're ready to throw that one last punch.

"Hissatsu overdrive: Thundering Impact!"

Your fist lands square against her chest and for a second all is still. Then the impact truly hits, sending Pecha flying back with a visceral bang and a wave of dirt flying in all directions. You smile in satisfaction at finally landing a heavy hit. Then the fatigue hits and you fall down to your knees as your transformation fails. Yeah you're going to feel these bruises in the morning...

"Jeez, that was... A real nice punch." You hear your sparring partner from a fair distance away and see her limping over to you. "Probably shouldn't have let you have that one... Let's take a break shall we?"

-----------------------------------------

The three of you are sitting down on a blanket together enjoying some tea after your rough sparring session, because apparently Leshi carries around a set for that in his bag for some reason. The ointment you have slathered on yourself feels cold in the evening breeze.

"Did I at least a good fight?" You don't really like tea but it's warm and the ointment you have slathered on yourself feels very cold in the evening breeze.

"Yep, like an angry rabid badger." Pecha sips her tea while brushing her case. Her pet has his own cup but it doesn't seem like he wants it. "Leshi didn't last very long at all when I played with him~"

The boy in question grumbles as he puts away his kettle. "I'm more of a supporter than a fighter and we both know that. Still I'd say she did pretty alright."

"Anyways you've got a few holes in what you do. You're not very cautious and your tactics are shallow. From the way I understand how you function, you had two options of winning. Either you used all that energy of yours and rushed me down before I could do anything, or you used your speed to take Walter here away from me. I'm not sure if you have any other tricks in your toolbox, but that's what I can see from our fight."

"And what our sadistic rich girl here is going to say next is buy some stuff to make up for it."

She glares at Leshi before continuing. "What the stunted kid said. New equipment can be easy to use and comes in a lot of varieties. It's either that or training like a maniac like the boss does."

"How are you guys carrying around so much crap anyways? It's kind of annoying carrying around my sword when I'm going outside already and I don't think I can carry around an armory by myself."

"I deal with magic relating to nature and making it normal. It only makes sense that I can reverse that and turn normal things anomalous right? My bag is a lot bigger on the inside." Leshi opens up his bag and shows the inside to you which is a seemingly bottomless black pit. Wait does that mean he wasn't lying about the garden?

"And Walter's shell here is his own special space and it works however he wants it to. It's an extension of my unique abilities as a witch. Most people call these sort of things dimensional bags or whatever the thing is. They're usually pretty expensive and you have to go to very specific workshops like Warp Tech for stuff like it. Luckily me and shorty can make our own." She opens up her case and you can see those red eyes staring out at you from the inky blackness. You attempt to feel one of his legs and they reluctantly let you. Sort of feels like a mix of Velcro and porcelain.

"Very expensive, huh? I'm not sure I can afford that." Frugal spending is kind of ingrained in your being since childhood. Still trying to forget that baseball incident.

"Don't worry, you probably won't need it for a long while. Boss doesn't even have one either. She doesn't have much gear in general to be honest, just spends all her money on augmentations if she does decide to get something."

You lay back on the ground and look up at the sky to think about it. The color is fading from blue to a warm orange. It's actually pretty weird to see the sky instead of cityscape. It's still very urban in the south west, but it's much less congested. Eventually you sigh and jump up to your feet. "Let's go home, I need to sleep this off."

---------------------------------------------------------------

When you get back to the office, you see that the boss is back. Katya is leaning back in her chair, smoking. This wouldn't be unusual if not for the fact that she is absolutely coated in dried blood. "Welcome back." She calmly states, tossing a piece of junk mail to the goat that Leshi seems to have just left on the first floor before you left. You're fairly certain it isn't her blood.

The other two seem just fine with carrying the livestock out of the room and going to sleep, but you still have things to talk about.

"So, about that arsonist case. I've got some things I need to talk to you about." You walk up to her desk and take a seat. You tell her everything about how you managed to find the suspected girl and how she's squatting in the outskirts.

"Mhmm, so you're fairly certain that this girl is burning down buildings for money as a revenge service?" You nod, and she stubs her cigarette. She actually looks pretty content considering one of the lenses of her glasses is completely covered in dried blood. "Seems like a pretty cut and dry thing. Just need to catch her in the act and we can take her in. Good work."

"Well the thing is... I was sort of hoping to try something different. She doesn't exactly seem like a bad person, just needs money to get by. Magical girls are rare and all, so what if we tried recruiting her?"

Katya sighs and takes off her glasses to look you in the eyes.. "She is an arsonist you know, even if she isn't a "bad person" she's still a criminal. And if she isn't it would still be a pain and a half to convince the upper brass to let it slide."

"Please trust me on this, I can vouch for her. I've seen a lot of types growing up in a scummy place. Good people who had to do reprehensible things and awful ones showing some shreds of humanity. I have a good feeling about her." You give her the most determined look you can muster and she leans back leaving the two of you in silence for a long while with nothing but the ticking of the office clock to keep you company.

She finally speaks up and a wave of relief washes over you. "Fine. Since you're so very sure of this I'll trust you on it. One condition though. If I do manage to convince the higher ups to let her crimes go, you've got full responsibility for whatever she does, got that? She pays for the damages she has caused out of her paycheck and you pay for her food, clothes, board, whatever. Our job is to keep the public safe, and betraying their trust in us is unforgivable." The steely look she drills into you with those crimson eyes of hers tells you just how much she means it.

"Thanks boss, you won't regret this, trust me!" You nod in thanks and stand up. The walk to your room is one filled with thoughts of what you're going to have to do with this new girl and how you'll deal with her. Now that you think about it you haven't even decorated your room and now you're going to have to pay for another person's living expenses... Well you're just gonna have to cross that bridge when you get to it.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Morning comes just like any other day. You get ready and meander downstairs where the others are milling around doing their daily business. Seems all the major tasks have been taken care of already, so unless something pops up you're free to do whatever you want for now.

Best to get this out of the way first. You quickly get the number for Manechi Studios and call them up to place an order for some new equipment.

"Yes, is Manechi Studio. You have request?" The voice on the other end sounds like a gruff and very blunt man. Not too articulate either.

"Uh, this is Elizabeth of the Southwest lower district MGDF office. I'd like to place an order for some stuff."

"Oh, yes, yes, first time order from our new partner? Our product very high quality. Best in business! Never order from shitty Kaichin Industries!" He seems very... Enthusiastic at least? "So what you need? We make everything from killing sword to autonomous rig."

>Workshops can make a wide variety of custom equipment and usually have a specific specialty they can apply to their product. The one you're partnered with has the [Form change] and [High energies] properties.
>Making a new piece of equipment costs 5 credits with an additional credit per unique property added. Upgrading existing pieces like your sword or belt costs 6 and going up by 1 per every level of upgrade. Being partnered with a workshop like the one you're currently calling reduces all costs by 1.

Basic equipment will only get you so far, upgrades can be very significant. For instance making your belt rise tension faster or lowering the threshold for a form change. Ten different weapons don't matter if none of them can cut through the armor.
>>
>>4534279
understandable, can you give an example of a upgraded weapon vs a non-upgraded weapon?
>>
>>4534282
Three examples of upgrading your sword.
>A thermal edge, causing it to cut through much thicker material, cauterize, and deal more damage to things susceptible to burning.
>An amplifier to boost your ability to use your sword in tandem with spells and such, channeling electricity through it.
>Better alloys and material for a sharper blade and more durability
Creativity is generally the only limiter in what you can do with upgrades. Most workshops really like to experiment with stuff.
>>
"I was sort of thinking about getting a gun of some kind. Need a ranged attack, you know?"

"Yes we make those. Shotgun, machinegun, pistol, cannon. Many variety. Have specific requests? I make what I want if you do not say differently."

Some default choices...
>No. 27 Longfang: A very standard shotgun. Supports a variety of different ammunition types if you buy them yourself. Generally requires two hands to use.
>Harrier submachinegun: A very light SMG with little recoil. Not much power in its rounds but very easy to use on the move and accurate.
>Muteki contender: A high caliber revolver. Has a lot of stopping power but a big kick and a limited capacity. Considered stylish by many.
>I want something specific

All these options cost the standard 4 unless you choose to add a property. If you wish to buy or upgrade anything else add it to your vote.

>New piece of equipment
Here have my current ideas

[-( side arm )-] [Form change] [high energy due to how much energy transformation must use] silenced machine pistol with willy pete rounds that can transform into a pen with a thumb drive built in for stealth or transform into a other guns we decide on with the option to add more guns ourselves and it comes with an ai assisted gun design application that helps us make designs for this thing

[Ammunition notes]as a side note since transformation is possible that says you can turn energy into matter or at the very least turn matter into a grey goo you can use to make stuff so for the gun side arms ammo it won't need bullets as it can make its own wether that be by transforming into a version of itself that has ammo or by using grey goo

[-(Sword upgrade)-] [Form change] [high energy] Upgrade our sword to be able to turn into a Swiss army knife that always has whatever misc tools we need even stuff that wouldn't be on a Swiss army knife like a phone charger sos beacon or thumb drive for ease of carry as well as versatility and also in its sword form give its blade a plasma edge and make it vibrate insanely fast to rip through armor even more

Here is something I want but is not the most needed
[-(combat drugs)-] an auto injector that's implanted into us it will be able to inject stimulants into us to keep us fighting even after were exhausted
>>
>>4534346
I will say we get the sidearm mentioned in this
>>4534376
Here it is
>[-( side arm )-] [Form change] [high energy due to how much energy transformation must use] silenced machine pistol with willy pete rounds that can transform into a pen with a thumb drive built in for stealth or transform into a other guns we decide on with the option to add more guns ourselves and it comes with an ai assisted gun design application that helps us make designs for this thing, to avoid ammo constraints , when out of ammo it "transforms" to a version of the design we are using at the moment that has ammo
>>
>>4534346
so how does voting for a new piece of equipment work? do we first choose a weapon type and then vote for if we wish to add a property or do we choose a weapon and say what property it has at the same time
>>
>>4534404
I think we basically make the weapon like I did in
>>4534376
Where we describe it's properties and stuff because the QM was basically begging for us to make an op but most importantly interesting weapon when he said creativity is the limit and either way it was fun to design
>>
>>4534389
anon that is a little bit too expensive and maybe a little bit too advanced, we don't know if there exist ai yet
>>
>>4534296
Amplifier sounds useful, if only to help with spellcasting in general (and lesson the stain of using spells in general).

Too expensive? I understand the ai thing was me being hopeful but he never said more features on the base weapon means more cost or at least I didn't see it

I will clarify when Ideas get a bit overboard. The form change attribute can make things shift into objects of the same relative size, so no submachineguns into pens unfortunately. A more concealed form like a briefcase is definitely possible though. Ammo regeneration is a bit beyond a basic weapon, and AI assisted equipment is far out enough to reach into another workshop's specialty.

High energy let's you put functions involving energy into a piece of equipment. From emitting and channeling electricity to creating shields and lasers. For instance you would need to have that property to create a halo esque personal shield or a railgun.
Form change allows you to shift something into another thing for a cheaper alternative to just buying another piece of equipment. Think bloodborne weapons and changing them to suit the situation.
Apologies if this is all a bit confusing

Okay I reread your original post about the cost and we have 12 points so I'm going to remake side arm plz tell if i messed up cost
>[-( side arm try 2 )-]
5 points spent so far for base
silenced machine pistol with sling

5 points still willy pete rounds - they are used irl so it shouldn't add in terms of cost and it will provide damage over time

6 points now - can transform into a small bag

9 points now- I think this would be a lot of points because op said it's beyond a basic thing but considering the gun has been made with this in mind it should cost less than an upgrade so I decided it costs half the first upgrade- when out of ammo it "transforms" to a version of the gun that has ammo , the way it would generate bullets is using some matter dense and pressurized grey goo that can work for multiple reload

Silencer is so we can kill people with everyone hearing a gunshot, bag is so we can transform it into a bag and take it as a holdout weapon or easily smuggle it somewhere

lets ask MGQM and what is your opinion of the smg railgun revolver?
>>4534453
is what the other anon suggested possible?
>>
>>4534519
My opinion is that it being a rail gun revolver is kind of dumb because the revolver won't have much space for rails and as a pistol it doesn't offer much space for the bullet, I would rather it turn into a rail gun carbine or rifle if we can so that it had more umpff
>>
>>4534526
well the qm said it would be powerful and have a lot of umph so i guess that it works somehow
>>
>>4534526
but i do agree that a rifle railgun weapon would be more powerful so i am wiling to vote for a railgun rifle that changes into something
>>
I'll post a proper form of what is currently being suggested.

>Light SMG/Revolver hybrid - 4 cost base
[Form change]: Can shift into a revolver - +1 point cost
[High energy]: Has rail accelerators to boost power - +1 point cost
A total of 6 points for this design. Ammo replicators would fall under a much more advanced category and most likely won't be necessary. Generalized ammo such as white phosphorus rounds aren't too special and as such won't cost much.
>>
>>4534486
Sounds good to me. I'm a bit surprised we're still on the shopping bit of this.

I honestly have no opinion when it comes to these sorts of things though.

>>
>>4534346
>Light SMG/rail gun carbine hybrid - 4 cost base
[Form change]: Can shift into a carbine - +1 point cost
[High energy]: Has rail accelerators to boost power - +1 point cost

Non point stuff
Sling - both forms have a sling
Wp rounds- the smg uses white phosphorus rounds
Rail gun ammo- the rail gun carbine uses tungsten rod like bullets for more umpf and to penetrate better
>>
>>4534561
I changed to carbine rather than a rifle
>>
>>4534562
Save at the moment because considering how every upgrade costs more it's better to get it all in one
>>
>>4534569
i don't think it works like that although idk
>>
>>4534558
How would a revolver have space rails of any decent length without massively extending the barrel
>>
I should explain that upgrading works on a level system. It's not the same as a property. So level 1 to 2 for example
>>
>>4534583
Can we add properties to a weapon without upgrading it?
>>
>>4534587
Yes, an upgraded weapon is sort of like a sharper sword while adding a property to it allows you to have a wider variety of options in what it can do
>>
So final list from what I see

>Accelerated SMG/Revolver: 6 points
>Railgun Modular carbine-SMG hybrid: 6 points
>Upgrade your sword or belt: 6 points

Vote for whatever you want and the most voted gets the buy.
>>

Okay another question would the weapons level effect the new properties

Also I have a few other questions

how is white phosphorus a general ammo type considering its a Warcrime to use due to its cruel effect on the enemy and the difficulty in extinguishing it

Secondly would an exo skeleton slow us down in terms of reaction speed or speed in general also about shields could we make a vest with shield projection
>>

>Railgun Modular carbine-SMG hybrid: 6 points
>>
>>4534619
1. You have quite a bit of leniency in your choice of weaponry considering how you're a live electrical conduit. Don't expect to have people take very kindly to you if you decide to be cruel to those you're supposed to take in alive though.

2. A good exo-skeleton would probably increase your physical abilities but would not really be compatible with you considering that your belt puts you in a combat suit already. A personal shield is definitely possible though.
>>
>>4534626
how big is the power difference between a carbine railgun and a revolver railgun?
>>
>>4534637
A carbine you're going to have rifle caliber rounds and a higher fire rate, so more powerful but it's going to require two hands to use. A revolver you can one hand and still has quite a bit of stopping power.
>>
>>4534626
I assume we could add some properties to the belt to make it so we can use an exo skeleton or something like power armor
>>
>>4534641
Wouldn't the carbine have significantly more stopping power considering its way longer rails
>>
>>4534641
Another thing is that the carbine would be more accurate than the revolver
>>
So from how the voting seems to be going we're getting the carbine. I'm going to write up the post and then after that take a little break of a day or two to plan out more story stuff and make sure everything will go smoothly. Perhaps I should simplify the equipment system next time so we don't get bogged down in too much specific number crunching again. The perils of running a quest for the first time.
>>
>>4534658
yeah I am fine with the carbine
changing vote to that
>>
>>4534577
That's not what rail gun tech entails, mate. Maybe if we wanted to punch a hole in a UFO, maybe we'd care about the size, but we're dealing with humanoids, not Godzilla, so we should be alright with a regular barrel.

Think Mass Effect, mate.
>>
>>4534658
Please don't simplify it it was fun, what I would recommend is writing up how the equipment making system works on a google drive or paste in and linking it so that people will know everything

>>
>>4534658
Honestly, I think it's just the one anon going overboard with the possibility. I think it's fine as it is, mate.
>>
>>4534663
We aren't always dealings with humanoids though we have already fought a giant bee and other monsters so i want something that can have a ton of stopping power plus a carbine gives us a mid range option that has more ammo before needing to reload, can kill stuff that shrugs off the smg without entering melee and considering that we may encounter some giant monster that can stop stuff like our smg in the future we will want an option that can rapidly fire lots of very powerful rounds into it. all in all I think the carbine is better because it allows for more versatility and can deal with stuff that our smg just can't and that we don't want to melee with
>>
>>4534667
True Its really just me advocating for the carbine

Well, to my knowledge it's between a handgun and a two-hand gun. I'm fine for going broke and getting both if you lads are.
>>
>>4534685
we don't have to go broke chief we could just have a design that has both, it would only cost two points extra
>>
>>4534685
Sure I'm fine spending another point to get all three transformations because that way we have a heavier gun that we can dual wield with our sword for tougher targets that we can't just kill with the carbine

>>4534658
>Changing to spend another point so we can get both transformations
>>
>>4534691
i think it would cost two points due to the fact that it would have a railgun
>>4534658
changing to combining them for 2 points extra cost
>>
>>4534691
Another thing is the revolver will have white phos armor piercing ammunition so that it can retain some of the benefits of white phos while being able to penetrate a fair bit more than the smg
>>
>>4534658
have you started writing?
>>
>>4534695

"Okay, all finalized, yes? We can do this. Delivery boy will have it there by evening. Very fast and smooth." The guy on the other end hangs up swiftly as you place your order for a relatively complex combination firearm. He doesn't seem very good at conversation. And with that you've finished up with orderings some new gear.

Now you just need to decide what to do next with the rest of your day.

Next update will be on Monday so I hope you all can manage a short break.
>>
>>4534703
Trying to imagine this.

The way I figure it, there's always a stock, getting thicker as you change to the revolver. It can fold up under the barrel for the revolver.
A segmented barrel that splits into four segments with the front three splitting into three parts, pulling back to provide slightly stronger electromagnetic forces.
The receiver only shifts the mag-well, externally speaking, when changing between carbine and smg.
The barrel can be the same width, .357 magnum; every 9mm; and multiple rifle rounds are all in the same size tolerance range.

And this is why I can't have nice things.
>>
>>4534771

Either seven or 8 and we got a smg that shoots white phos rounds and it can transform into a rail accelerated revolver that shoots ap/white phos hybrid rounds or a rail gun carbine that fires tungsten rods that will penetrate almost anything short of a tank

The smg and revolver can be used one handed but carbine mode requires 2 hands

>>
>>4536117
Of course, and any other ideas you have on the subject. Might as well have a plan when we have more credits, you know?
>>
>>4536164
I was thinking we could add some laser shields to the belt/combat suit and later when we have enough money i want to buy some stuff from that place that deals in body augmentation
>>
>>4536203
Nice. Anybody else have any ideas?
>>
>>4536164
Okay there's a ton of stuff I want first I'll list resonable stuff and then expensive

------actually useful
I want us to have a vest which has shield projectors and that can take hits

A few concealable holdout weapons for more subtle mission and for when were investigating

A transforming tool for misc stuff we encounter on the job as well as preforming in field repairs

a good quality trench knife for the utility a knife offers as a tool

sos beacon in case we get trapped somewhere

medical kit and everyone to get medical training so we can patch each other up

stimulants that can make us fight longer because we get tired really fast and I don't want us passing out mid fight

----needed due to cuteness----

A robotic doggo companion that can do support stuff like scan an area for enemies or their traces, patch us up and stabilize us if we get in a bad situation or wounded on a solo missions, drag us to cover if we're wounded and uncon during a fight, be able to turn into a more deadly form that can rip through normal humans with ease and give off a demonic roar as it bathes in the blood and guts of it's foe, carry stuff, and be adorable while providing cuddles and emotional support

---expensive---
I want an exo skeleton that doesn't limit us at all, qm said it could be done and the exo skeleton would let us carry a ton of stuff it would have inbuilt shields an the ability to transform into something that's normal like a suitcase or it would be able to be concealed under something like baggy pants and a hoody and could go with us wherever we want unlike the power armor

I want a suit of power armor for when we are storming a place, the suit would be armored to hell it would have fuck tons of shielding and heavy shoulder mounted weapons as well as stuff like lazer point defense meant to take out projectiles, drones that provide fire support and other stuff an integrated ai to help us control everything and deal with minor functions and auxiliary weapon systems.

Another thing I want is combat drugs and an auto injector so we can last longer in a fight

I want ammunition replicators in our stuff so we can have lots of differentweapons/transformations without needing to carry hundreds of different ammo types

I want an ai that can link to our mind(it wouldn't be able to control our body) to take orders for controling drones and whatever other special weapons we have meaning that we don't have to divide our attention

I want drones that can do stuff like aggro the enemy and take hits or shoot the enemy
>>
>>4536286
I told mine and I agree we do need augmentations, for augmentations I want an ai that helps us control all the support stuff and auxiliary weapons systems like drones that we will have meaning we can focus on the fight and it will know exactly what we want
>>
>>4536286
Here I got a new idea,

Mobility Thruster kit- this pack has thrusters on it that can make rapid menuvers while going at an insane speed in combat possible and also allows for stuff like wall running and massive boost into the air as well as semi controlled falls
>>
>>4536334
I think you are planning too far ahead, lets see how our combat style evolves and go from that
>>
>>4536334
Although this one is good i was talking about the ones in the Wall of text when i was saying that you were thinking too far ahead
>>
>>4536367
I agree the lower options are impractical right now but for the options I labeled actually useful I think they are good to have as they would mean we can have the tools to deal with a lot more situations Granted the holdout weapons aren't that useful but I still think a multitool , knife, medkit, and sos beacon are things we definitely should get so we can be equipped for more stuff

As for the combat drugs I want them because we keep getting exhausted from combat and as we use magic more it will occur more often, well either that or we get training so we can actually have the stamina for combat
>>
>>4536387
actually i don't think we need a exoskeleton when we could just upgrade our belt
>>
>>4536309
>>4536313
>>4536334
Skip too the end for my summarized list of suggestions.

We can add the shield projectors to the belt.
Holdouts are fair, maybe two total.
Multi-tools are a valid choice for mundane situations, and magi-tech.
Multi-tools have a knife, just make sure it's a good blade and we're good.
SOS beacons are a good choice, but they're probably going to have to be a magi-tech one to ensure function in unusual circumstances.
Quick Seal is probably a thing, so training that might not be worth while, in comparison to making ourselves more effective and letting the specialist special.
NO HARD DRUGS. Adrenaline and Caffeine are ok, but no addictive substances.

Robo-dog is an interesting idea, but would be one of, if not the most expensive things on the list.

An exoskeleton and power armor are only different in that one is armored. QM said there's some kind of issue due to our transformation. Maybe that can be worked around, but probably not simply.
NO DRUGS!
If we do end up doing the ammo replicators, we could do it IN a weapon, removing the need to reload.
An AI assistant is a big ask. We'll probably have to work for it, and make friends with an AI before getting it put into a cybernetic implant that we can directly interface with.
Drones are a cool idea, we could probably interface with them using our electrical magic. Having shield drones is one of the first things that comes to mind, but think Tau from 40k for possibilities.

Augmentations could help with several things, but we should also try to train ourselves as much as we can. If one trains like mad, and the other pays to win... what happens when someone does both?

We can already throw ourselves around with our magic, we just need to train our mystic stamina, and maybe make a more specialized version for movement.

So immediate wants/needs are:
A good knife/multi-tool for emergency combat and stealth mission use.
A holdout weapon, with the knife being the other. Preferably near silent, and high capacity. (metal pellet launcher, coil-gun or rail-gun pistol using iron ball bearings)
Medical spray/wound sealant/whatever is a temporary fix in this world.
Training for stamina and tactics.
NOT TO GET ADDICTED TO COMBAT DRUGS PLEASE.
>>
>>4536103
>How about some kind of jetpack/wingpack? With our new ranged capabilities areal superiority might be useful.
>>
>>4536801
That stuff would need good stabilization and a ton of training with in order to be useful
>>
>>4536759
Obviously I agree the ammo replicator would be in the weapon granted it still might need a grey goo as mass to make the ammo out of but if all weapons can use the grey goo it massively cuts down on weight

An exoskeleton and power armor are very different when you consider the effect of not having or having armor, not having it allows for stuff like more carrying capacity due to less weight taken up by the armor, lower ground pressure because you dont have the extra 200 pounds of armor meaning it's easier to walk over stuff like slightly loose soil or sand or even just minor mud without the ground swallowing your leg up to your ankle, it also allows for more range of movement due to not being limited by the armor

Qm said the issue with transformation can be worked around by simply modifying the belt

I disagree with interfacing with the drones using magic. it would add another thing we need to focus on during combat and uses up magic needlessly. it's also going to be extremely difficult to understand what electric signals on a circuit board translate to even if we have magic, missinterpritation due to combat distracting us. I would recommend a visor or something so we can see the information and understand it easily rather than trying to decode electric signals mid fight.

As for the ai thing you mentioned qm said it's another workshops specialty so we can simply buy it

Also the belt having the shield sure I'm fine with it as long as it's not much weaker and doesn't consume any magic because if we make it use magic then it will just drain us when we're hit and add another passive energy consumption
>>
>>4536873
i think that the exoskeleton and power armor would be kinda pointless, I assume that the combat suit already enhances our strength and defense so just upgrading it would be good enough
>>
>>4536881
I disagree, the combat suit doesnt deal with lots of equipment as effectively and can't mount some extra weapons or tons of shielding on it. Also the suit uses magic so if we used an exo skeleton we wouldn't spend as much

In all I believe an exo skeleton will provide more versatility for combat and give us a higher amount of stuff such as weapons and protection we can take into combat
>>
>>4536902
when would we ever need that much firepower?
>>
>>4536902
please think about how much it would cost
>>
>>4536902
please for the time being put this idea of yours on the shelf, we don't even know how upgradable the combat suit is and also consider the fact that relying on one really expensive equipment is foolish due to the fact that the enemy can have attacks that creates EMP like effects

That’s taken care of. Now, what to do with your free time... Oh, Katya is leaving with a different outfit than her usual suit and tie; a t-shirt and some compression shorts. You walk up and ask her where she’s going in hopes of striking up a conversation.

“Mmm? Going to my usual workout session. What, do you want to come along.”

Perfect opportunity to get to know her more and see what her training is like. “Yeah sure, I’d be happy to.”

She looks at your casual wear for a moment before beckoning for you to follow out the door. “Not the right kind of clothes but fine, come on.”

She leads you a jog through the city. It’s a pretty lengthy route and you’re fairly certain that she’s just doing this to get cardio in. It goes along the edge of the upper districts and the lower, giving you a view of where the quality of life raises significantly. It’s weird actually being able to see it unlike the west where the skyline blocks everything. Cleaner streets, decorative architecture... Too bad you can’t afford to live there with your wage. The place she brought you to happens to be a fitness center.

“You ever workout or anything like that before?” She asks as you both enter.

"Do street brawls count?"

"No, but I think I have something close for that. Got a nice ring for sparring in this place. Let's get some basics for you though." She leads you through some machines and how they're used, what types of muscles they affect and such. She really does seem enthusiastic about training, and more importantly making you want to train. The jog thankfully warmed you up so it's pretty easy to slip into a routine and her encouraging you through it is a bit weird but nice. Working up a bit of a sweat though.

A couple hours in she takes you to the ring and has you put on some gloves and protective gear. "Come at me with your best. No transformation or anything fancy. Just some plain fighting."

66 - Good result

You start off lightly, and go at her. It's pretty obvious that she's just trying to get you to show off how you fight. She just catches and dodges your hits, advising on things to improve like your stance and conserving your energy.

"You do any kind of martial arts boss?" You ask while throwing another punch at her right side which she blocks.

"Aikido, but it's not like I use it often. Thing about those fancy styles and such is that you almost never use them. A random person doesn't fight like an orderly individual practicing an art, they're more like an angry animal. Never gonna have a chance to use half the stuff they teach you besides the basics."

"Having fun with your new recruit Katya?" You hear a new person's voice from the side and look over. It's a fit woman with brown hair done up in a ponytail. A certain air of smugness comes off her.

"Took you long enough to get here Julia. This ponce right here is the leader of the upper district office." Katya walks over to the side up to her and you sit back taking a break.

She mocks offense at her insult and laughs "You hurt me so badly with your words. If only you could do that kind of damage with your fists."

"How about we have another match then Julia? Unless you aren't feeling up to putting some weight to your words."

She smiles and jumps into the ring. "Alright, then let's see if you can show me up, kitty-kat. What's our score so far?"

"I forgot. You know I've always been bad with remembering and numbers. Enough talk though." She tosses her a pair of gloves and gets to her corner while you get out. "Let's go."

They go at each other for a long time and it's a good opportunity to watch some pros at fighting just trying to punch each other out and learn from it. The speed and reactions they have are remarkable, even when one takes a hit they only flinch a little and quickly counter. Pretty sure they could go at it for hours too given the amount of energy they have. Probably would have too if a phone didn't ring.

The match is put on pause and Julia answers it before talking to Katya in a serious manner. "So, looks like someone decided now is the best time to hit a vault. I'm gonna have to take my leave here and deal with that. Was enjoyable, but duty calls."

"I think I'll tag along. Wouldn't want anything bad to happen, so I'll be there just to pick up the slack."

"I'm not gonna miss out on watching some professionals in action, I'm coming too." You say, getting up and following the two.

It's hard to keep up with them as they sprint through the streets towards the destination. Especially given how the exercise from before wore you down. The place is a bank further into the upper districts and when you arrive, there's already a whole group of regular enforcers surrounding the place. Vehicles and personal stand in position but not entering just yet. It's kind of weird seeing the actual peacekeepers in action. You sort of forget that they're a thing due to how late they can be to respond and that they're only supposed to deal with mundane threats.

Thankfully Julia speaks up and starts giving some information on what's happening so you actually understand what's going on. "It's a group of about ten people from what we gather. They're holding the civilians inside hostage so we can't exactly make a move on them. We don't have any way of seeing further inside the building either since they cut the surveillance so we don't know what we're going to encounter if we try to storm in."

"So it's going to be an annoying slow burn. Any demands yet?" Your boss asks, leaning up against a dark windowed security van.

"Just that they want more money and a guaranteed escape. Waiting on Misha to get here right now and get us an opportunity to get in there." Not entirely sure who that is but they probably have some skills to deal with this kind of situation.

It seems weird to you that a bunch of heisters would stick around and get into a hostage situation. Usually they hit the place then run as fast as they can to avoid any unnecessary risks. Maybe they're just amateurs and messed up.

"It's a little weird that they would try this in a place where any random magical girl could easily respond isn't it? Kind of like they really want attention." You mention idly.

"It is strange. It wasn't an alarm sounding or anything that alerted us to this. They deliberately went out of their way to make this a hostage situation. Unless they have some easy way out of this it's an incredibly stupid situation." Julia starts rambling on at your mention of it. While you're discussing this you see a figure poke their head up from on top of the building. She's a girl with white hair and a big fur coat on. "Ah, Misha is in position. We should be ready to start."

"Elizabeth, do you mind going around to the back of the building?" Katya asks you, transforming into her armored dress and slowly walking forward.

"Isn't there another building behind this one?"

"I've just got a thought about this is all. Go on, quickly."

No real reason to refuse your boss, might as well go as she said even if you don't get to watch. A white haze seems to fall over the bank as you maneuver to the back, which happens to be a laundromat. It's just a regular emptied store and you're a little disappointed when nothing happens for the next few minutes. Your waiting certainly does pay off though, when a man just casually walks through the wall connecting the buildings as if nothing was there. Not just any man though, the most generic man you have ever seen in your life; Disturbingly so. If you looked up, business man in a suit he would probably be the first image result. You both share a moment of silence just looking at each other before he speaks up.

"How disappointing. I suppose you wont let this go without a scuffle will you?"

"I don't think I will. Henshin!" Armor and cloth materialize and snap along your body as your fist glides past the man, nearly missing him as he swerves to the side.

"Ahaha, so we're doing this now are we? Rise!" Something shines in his left hand and the dryer right next to you twists and rends itself toward you, quickly shaping into a vaguely humanoid form that is very keen on trying to cave in your skull. Something is up here, everything seems off about this guy. Why can he use magic? Not a normal person that's for sure.

You smash the construct's upper body with a high kick only to see more crawling their way out of the nearby appliances and structure. They don't seem very tough to you but there's going to be a bunch to chew through. This is going to be an unorthodox workout routine.

"I'd recommend you reconsider your options here. It's gonna be a reeeal pain to waste my time here. I like to stay punctual." The man taps the watch on his wrist condescendingly while swaying the briefcase in his right hand side to side and slowly walking backwards towards the entrance. "I'd say you've got some better places to be as well too."

I agree with grabbing him, but zapping him seems smart too.

92 - Excellent success

Not gonna let this creep get away that easily. You run forward, dropping to a slide and skirting past a couple of the constructs and lunging at him. You manage to grab his right arm and get a solid grip on it.

"Don't worry I've got plenty of free time. It's rude to leave a girl all by herself after all." You throw a punch, but when it impacts against his face the whole left side just splatters. Not into gore or anything, but a weird gooey purple substance.

"Flicker." For a moment it seems like reality skips and he just falls out of your hands as if he wasn't there. He rolls backwards and gets back up to look at you with half of a scowling face. amorphous goo writhes and solidifies into a strange geometric shape to fill the missing space. "You just ruined a perfectly good skin. I hope you're proud of yourself." This guy is definitely not human.

Several of the artificial creatures try to attack you, but you easily fend them off, severing pseudo-limbs and scrap with your sword. "I'd say I am you creep. Just what are you?"

He laughs and grins with the intact half of his face. "I don't think I need to tell you that. You seem very competent at dealing with my friends here, but what about the poor innocent public?" He snaps his fingers and a gaggle of the monsters begin quickly trundling off into the streets. "Here's a little tip off to you as well, these guys aren't the only ones running about. I suggest you take a look at the outskirts some time. They've been dying to visit the real city for a long time and I just couldn't deny them. So here's the choice you have, either waste your time in an utterly futile chase that you can't hope to win or you can help out these defenseless schmucks."

Okay, things have gotten pretty serious real quickly...

Well he's smart to force your hand like this. You take out your phone and get a photo as quickly as you can of the freaky guy. Not exactly keen on letting him go but you don't have a choice here.

"Make sure to get my good side." He says cheerfully, ripping up a maintinence hatch leading to the city's underbelly. "They never get it ri-"

A trio of gunshots interrupts him and a single hole bursts open in his leg and quickly mends. The girl you saw up on the roof jumps down and aims an old fashion looking rifle at the man.

"Oh, look at what you did! Sorry, but a threesome is a bit too much for me. Ciao for now~" Those are the last words he leaves you with as he lets himself fall backwards into the hole with bullets whistling past. It's going to be ridiculously hard for anyone to pursue him in that labyrinth of city infrastructure.

"You hear all that?" You ask the new girl while bisecting another of the monsters.

"That is correct. I recommend we inform the others and spread outwards to prevent excessive damage." Her voice is even and monotone, even as she swings her rifle by the barrel smashing a head with her stock. Just had to pick the day that you're all worn out to have you running around the city. He didn't specify where these things are going to come from either, the outskirts surrounds the entire city. You'll have to pick a direction and guess. There's about four of you in the lower district and you think like... Six in the upper? So that's about ten people to cover the diameter of the city not counting regular enforcers.

You take your phone and begin to punch in Katya's number while cleaning up the remaining creatures with the other girl. By the time she picks up you're sheathing your sword and running back to the front of the bank. Unsurprisingly, it's very hard to explain a complex situation while out of breath.

"So this was all a distraction for that freaky thing?"

"Yep, wonderful isn't it?" You reply, forcing yourself into a random enforcer's van much to their confusion. "I'm gonna head to the north side. Come on, drive, drive!"

----------------------

You are Leshi, a magical boy and servant of the god Placreci. What you aren't is someone who's good at dealing with people, which makes it baffling as to why your boss decided to make you pick up the arsonist that you certainly don't trust and convince them to come along with you. Then again, you wouldn't trust Pecha to do this either. Regardless it's an order and you need to follow it.

Eventually you do find the right building, even if they all look like the same abandoned heap of trash. loitering inside is the girl you were told about. Red hair, dirty looking, and dragon bits. They do not look like an upstanding person to you.

Alright, no need to get upset about an offhand insult. It'll take more than that to make you want to throttle this homeless girl who smells way too much of chili powder. Just need to give her the details and that will be that...

"I'm here to give you an ultimatum, gecko." Nailed it. "I'm from MGDF and we know that you're the one torching property around the city."

She immediately scowls at you and the room feels a little hotter for a moment. "And you're here to try and stop me or something like that, am I right? I'd like to see you try."

"That's only if you don't accept our offer. You stop burning stuff down and join our organization to become a normal functioning citizen and we forgive all the horrific arson you've committed." You're not happy about that offer and would rather that she's locked up but it wasn't your choice to make.

She gives you a suspicious look for a long while. "And how do I know that you're not lying about this offer. As soon as I give myself up you might as well just stuff me in jail without holding up your end? I don't trust people that easily."

She's going to be difficult it seems. Part of you wants this to turn into a fight just so you don't have to work alongside an actual criminal.

"That would just be a waste of time. I'm fairly certain my boss could put you through a wall without breaking a sweat and end this problem in an afternoon. We're being so open about this to you as a show of good faith. Besides, do you look at me and honestly think that I'm the best person to send in for a fight?"

"You look like a stuffed animal for what that's worth." Contempt rising by the second. She seems to think on it for a while, still cautious of you. "So if I take this deal there's no jail time at all, right?"

"Completely pardoned and you'll have an idiot paying for food and a bed for you. Way better than huddling up in this dump. Easy choice isn't it?" You see her glance over to a pile of empty instant noodle cups and back at you. There's another long pause but eventually she speaks up again.

"Okay fine, I'll take your word. But believe me, if you're lying you'll regret it munchkin." There's a mix of relief and annoyance bubbling inside you so all you can do is sigh in response. Easy job done, now you can go back and relax at- Wait why do you suddenly hear marching outside.

"Uh, hold on for a moment." You quickly move to the entrance and peak outside. For some god forsaken reason there is a massive mob of cobbled together constructs stomping in one singular direction, all towards the city.

"Are they with you?" You hear the girl asking as she hovers above you.

"I can say with utter certainty no. You might have to be on the job pretty soon whether you like it or not." Suddenly your phone starts ringing and you panic trying to answer it so the ringtone doesn't alert anyone.

"So, uh... We might have a tiny problem." You hear Elizabeth on the other end nervously laughing. "There might be an attack on the city from the outskirts happening right now."

"Yeah, I noticed." You mutter looking out at the constructs marching forth. Some of them carry weapons and others are covered in imitations of plate armor like some kind of messed up knight costume. There must be dozens of them. "Sort of busy dealing with that right now. So if you don't mind, I'd rather you call back later." You just hang up immediately and grumble in frustration. At least you didn't waste your mana expanding the domain all night like you did before that last anomaly delve. That was an embarrassing moment that you'd rather not repeat.

"So what's the plan little man?" The salamander behind you asks.

"You're a pyromaniac right? Probably going to regret this but, I'm going to get them to clump up and trust you to deal with them. You can burn stuff and it's completely legal, isn't that nice?"

She pulls a wand from her pockets and taps you on the head with it. "Not a pyromaniac. Fire is just a pretty thing is all. Go ahead and dance for me if that's what you want." You sigh in response and transform into your proper vestments. Crouching down, you take a deep breath and jump forth.

A single head hits the ground at the same time you. All eyes are on you then and they waste no time as they being running at you. A roll through the legs of one, jumping up and landing on a misshapen sword jabbing at your body, twisting and turning as you dash between these junk constructs. This is the second time this week you've had to do something like this and you would prefer that it didn't become a habit. If there is one thing you can thank your father's genetics for it is that you're hard to hit at least. A period of intense dodging leaves them all moshed around you, and in that moment you shout out at the smelly lizard. "Do it now!"

A intense wave of heat follows you as you barely tumble out in time. You have to quickly pat out the bit of fire on your shawl that got caught in the blast, but otherwise you're fine. You turn around and see the pillar of fire behind you guttering out and fading to embers, and behind that is the girl standing in the doorway with a tall blacked skeleton with horns standing beside her. Of course she had to be a witch.

"That all?" She says, walking outside. You're about to respond when you hear more marching close by. A dozen more of those foot soldiers followed by several four legged constructs that you can only describe as some kind of walking weapon platform. Atop one of them stands an armored figure, leaning casually against it. And of course they're moving towards you, how wonderful.

"No, no it is not..." You take another deep breath. Today was supposed to be easy.

It's not a good idea to just stand around in the open like this, so why not make some cover.

"Arbor weave." You draw on your formidable well of mana, causing a mass of living wood to burst from the ground and twine together forming a decently tall wall. Just in time as a hail of projectiles sweep out, spraying up pulp and splinters as they impact the barrier. The foot soldiers sprint forward and reach the wall, hacking at it with sword and axe.

"Okay Igni, the stuffed animal here gave us a target range, so let's practice our aim." The girl takes her hand and makes a finger gun, pointing at a particular target. "Char." A ball of fire spits out of her fingertip streaking through the air at high speeds and searing a hole right through your wall and sending the enemy behind it sprawling to the ground. She quickly sends some more out hitting every shot. "Man, this is pretty eas-"

Her words are cut off when a harpoon suddenly rips through the air and buries itself in the ground right next to you. The walker that the figure was riding slams into the wall, tearing down a section as it climbs through. You can tell clearly now that it's a woman with long purple hair. She looks at you with disdain as her mount advances forth, twirling another spear in her hand.

>1 - Critical failure

Every magical girl has their own thing. New age ones have their finishers but classicals have a spell unique to them known as Magia break. It's special in the fact that they're usual incredibly powerful and innate to the person in question. You really don't like using yours because of how it messes with the way you think, but this is a big wave of trouble and all you have to help you through this is a girl you've met like five minutes ago. But surely it'll be fine right? You've been practicing keeping it under control. It'll all be fine Leshi, you've got this. Gotta relax and keep it under control...

"Magia break, Evolution: Wendigo."

Muscles cord, and limbs strengthen. Your nails sharpen to claws and your legs change to better suit you. You can feel your heart beating in your ears. A tinge of pain blossoms as feathered wings begin sprouting from your back. Eyes are sharpening only to blur, turning the world to a smear of color. Everything smells delicious. So hungry...

There is prey. Must hunt.

---------------------------------------------------------

You are Elizabeth Wyvern and you just finished cleaning up at the north side and are heading back to the office after your boss asked everyone to regroup. The north area didn't have as many invaders. You've been keeping in contact with others and it seems that it's the west side and the south that are mainly being hit but they mostly managed to keep damage to a minimum in the south. You're not the first back it seems, but funnily enough it's not one of your team that's there. It's a delivery boy with a massive stack of packages strapped to his back. He says nothing but hands you a box and a paper to sign. It must be your gun so you fill it out and pay him.

>New credit total: 7

While you wait inside checking out the craftsmanship on your strange combi-gun the first to come back is Pecha. "How was your end of the attack?" You ask, watching how the pieces intricately shift in order to change forms.

"Exhausting." She sighs, sitting down on the couch next to you. "They were so spread out that I had to run everywhere just to keep up. Took forever for others to come help too. Those things aren't even satisfying to fight either, they just crumble after one good hit."

"Mmm. My end was pretty boring. All the upper district girls were spread out so they had a head start."

"You got any tips on guns?"

"Got a new toy? Let me take a look at that..." You hand it over to her and she spends a long time flipping it about and examining it from all angles. "Pretty complex thing isn't it. Sprung for three forms?"

"Yeah, I figured I should get something versatile. Usable at all ranges and such." The manual; if you could call a couple papers with notes scribbled hastily on them a manual, is just as confusing to you. Pecha helps you understand some of the terminology of it though. She starts explaining the pieces and how you should really take care to clean and maintain certain parts regularly.

"Don't think that guns are the be all end all by the way. People who know what they're doing know just how to deal with ranged weapons. Either they make sure that bullets can't harm them easily or they're skilled and fast enough to dodge them. I've encountered a few guys like that and I'm pretty happy that I diversify my weaponry for those situations. Still useful tools, especially if you get into the high end stuff."

"Speaking of which, I saw something like that happen just today. It was during that bank heist that me and the boss went to deal with. Turns out it was all a distraction by this creepy slime guy to get something from there. Another girl shot at him and the bullets just passed right through him like it didn't matter. Do you know what that guy was?" You spin the cylinder of your revolver listening to it click by.

"So that's what happened to kick this all off. Can't say I have heard of that, but it is pretty strange. I wonder what it is he stole? Might have been important. Anyways, you need to get creative when you deal with people like that if you want to use guns. I know this one place where you can get bullets that burst into ice when they impact." She continues on giving more examples. Most of it passes through your head, but it's nice listening to her. She really seems to like equipment.

Your phone begins to ring in the middle of your conversation though, and it looks to be Leshi. He's not the one you hear when you answer it though, but it is a familiar voice.

"Hello? Is this the MGDF people or whoever?" It's Lucy from the day before and she's whispering for some reason.

"Wait, why do you have Leshi's phone? What's going on?"

"That voice... Are you that girl from the other day? Why are you... Never mind. Need your help right now in the outskirts. Same place you met me. Can't talk more, he might hear me." Just as abruptly the call came it ends, leaving you completely confused.

Op how can they make it so bullets don't harm them also how can they dodge a bullet/rail gun and how fast does the bullet have to be for them to be unable to dodge

Also what's the muzzle velocity of our gun in each form
>>
Armor, tactics, and many other things can neutralize the strengths of guns. This world is filled with a lot of supernatural and technological stuff, so a gun isn't exactly the tip of the iceberg. I'm not extremely knowledgeable on real world gun science, so I'd rather not delve too deep into things such as muzzle velocity. just know that it goes carbine>revolver>SMG in terms of how hard the bullets are gonna hit.
>>
>>4543689
anon you think too much about the logic just assume that the world runs on rule of cool
>>
>>4543701
Yeah I figured that would be the order of guns penetrative capabilities, I assume the carbine can penetrate anything up to a tank granted I'm not accounting for stuff like shields

Oh yeah here's a semi reasonable question what can stop the carbine considering it's specialized ammo and that it's a rail gun?
>>
>>4543702
Sure but for me cool is min maxing out equipment and skill also because making cool weapons is fun
>>
>>4543689
I guess the way they stop bullets from hurting them is with having a shield or augmenting their body to be powerful enough that bullets can't hurt them or use some bullshit spell that stops the bullet
>>
>>4543722
Probably not augmenting their bodies because unless they can make their bodies as tough as an armored fighting vehicle they will be wounded a ton and even then the force of the impact would knock them off their feet while possibly shattering/deforming bones/metal replacements and the force of the impact causing internal bleeding

As for shield barriers or spells those 2 are likely and wouldn't have the previously mentioned flaws granted for spells it would drain the energy of the user a ton due to how much force they need to stop

Yeah that sounded serious. Something is going wrong and you need to fix it. "That didn't sound good at all. How about we go and check out what's going on Pecha?"

"Fine by ne. Let's go." She passes you back your gun and the two of you get up. Before you go you send a message to the boss that you're going to investigate what's going on with Leshi in the outskirts and quickly begin running through the streets to the location. You see that there's some slight damage to a few areas but nothing too bad while moving on your route.

When you arrive to the spot you met Lucy at, there's no one here. There's shreds of the constructs you saw earlier everywhere though, and even the larger ones are torn apart and spread across the ground with massive slashes all over the surrounding architecture. There's something stranger here as well with grass and other foliage growing everywhere, even breaking through cracks in the concrete. A rustling sound brings your attention to a nearby building, and slowly you creep over to look inside.

A tall figure is crouched down, sniffing the air and scratching at the walls. It looks like some kind of twisted chimera of animal parts. A large rack of antlers, a canine face with sharp teeth, powerful clawed hands, and a pair of wings upon its back. There's a different thing that makes you concerned about this thing even more than its appearance though, and it's the fact that it's wearing the same the same shawl as Leshi does. The creature pauses for a moment and then turns to you. From its beady black eyes all you can feel is hunger from this thing. It rears back and lets out a blood chilling scream, lunging at you with shocking speed before you can even process what's going on.

You quickly transform in a panic and raise the revolver up, firing off three shots. Blood blossoms out as they impact, shredding up flesh but they don't seem to care at all. They barrel forward batting you with a arm and barely grazing you. Even with the miss it's still enough force to knock you a fair distance back outside the building.

"So Pecha, mind explaining why Leshi is a eight foot tall monster now?" You ask incredulously, reloading the revolver.

Your teammate joins up with you just as he begins clawing his way outside, barely able to fit through the doorframe. "Spell of his. It tends to make him a bit unhinged, but I've never seen him go full animal like this. We're just going to have to beat the crazy out of him until he can't sustain it anymore."

You're slightly concerned about the notion of hurting one of your co-workers, but the sight of the bullet holes in his torso knitting back together and healing over makes you realize that this wont be the problem here. They have the full intent to kill you and you need to have the same.

qm you forgot the incindeary in the rounds that would make the wounds continuously burn the shorty for at least a few minutes

> Get to a vantage point he can't get to (eg: a balcony or rooftop or second story window) and shoot him with the carbine till he stops being an irritated shorty and returns to normal

Remember if his organs are ripped through by tungsten rods fired from what effectively is a semi auto anti material rifle then he can't fight anymore even if he ignores pain

I think if we strike him with the sword, and use our lightning on it like a current, we got a pretty effective taser for Lechi, especially considering his regeneration.

Okay makes sense then though we should try to avoid frying his brain or his nerves too badly granted he would just regenerate

You grip your sword and dash forward to meet him, but it turns out it's not going to be that easy. You're immediately forced on to the defensive, attempting to parry flurries of powerful swipes that easily bat away your sword and leave you with little to no openings. One nasty swing hits your arm out of the way leaving you no way to guard, but a burst of bullets shreds his hand, causing him to immediately turn and sprint towards Pecha with alarming speed.

She seems to be put into the same boat as you in terms of close quarters, forced to block with her Lucerne hammer. Her familiar is stabbing away, bringing up trails of blood but he doesn't care in the least, He whips his head in a sudden move, smashing her to the side with his antlers. In response you send a burst of lightning over, making Leshi spasm in shock before turning back to you with those baleful eyes. Apparently he has a very short attention span or is just easily angered.

You're about to take a proper stance when a tugging sensation nearly makes you stumble. You look down and see some vines have grown and entangled one of your legs. It seems he isn't just going to use brute force in this state. Gonna be a problem as he's currently charging down toward you.

The concept of being afraid of losing in a fight never really made sense to you. If the one way to get out alive is to win then what's the point in being scared? You've long since conditioned yourself to be calm in terrible situations so it's natural when you brace yourself where you're stuck and prepare. Either you get mauled to death here or you kick your co-worker in the head and survive, no worries. The beast leaps through the air, guided by natural wing and muscle while you wait for the just the right moment.

"Jolt!" The time comes and your leg rips through the air at a terrifying speed, propelled by a magic. Your heel catches him in the jaw and a sickening crack reverberates on impact. His body flies through the air and slams into a nearby building while you spin in place trying desperately to keep your balance from the incredibly powerful kick. It feels like your leg nearly got yanked out of its socket there.

The guy doesn't seem to be out of fight, but he's definitely looking worse for wear given the pause he takes struggling to get up from his new crater bed. Steam and a angered howl pours out of his mangled jaw as it desperately tries to mend itself. The ground rumbles as saplings burst through aged foundation, Creeping vines drape from the surroundings, and the foliage itself becomes agitated. Tufts of fluffy spores drift down from above and you wince as they sting your skin on contact. Pecha seems to have gotten back and is ready to join you back in the fight.

1 - Oh deer...

He's winded and off balance, you need to finish this while you can. Tapping your catalyst you crouch down and ready up with your belt letting out that weirdly comforting jingle.

"Hissatsu overdrive: Rai-jing strike!" Jumping into the air and put yourself into a full diving kick ready to finish him off, but it seems that he wasn't as tired as you thought he was. Wooden stakes leap out from the earth and pierce your body, brining you to a complete and painful halt. You can't even process what happened before a clawed hand grabs you by the face and bodily slams you into a nearby wall. Blinding pain is all you feel as the impact leaves you stunned. It becomes very hard to understand what's going on around you, but you feel your limp body hit the floor. You think you can vaguely hear someone shout your name but it's quiet and your ears are ringing so loudly...

Slowly color comes back to the world and you slowly push yourself up off the floor. Everything hurts. Is that blood? Oh, yeah that's your blood... You suck in air trying to bear with the pain of your aching bones as you haul yourself up to your feet. You see Pecha fending off Leshi with her hammer. Trails of ice flake off of it as she brings herself into full swing. The shadowy spider popping out of its case seems much bigger and lashes out with blade like limbs that seem much more weapon like than the last time you saw them. Kinda looks like she's actually fighting him on even keel now, but then again you're still seeing blurry doubles.

98 - Excellent success

You'll be damned if you let something as insignificant as a mortal wound keep you down. Besides you've never gotten the chance to use this other form thing with the belt. You take out a slender metallic pin and slot it into your belt. You hear an air siren begin to play as parts of your armor shift and split open spilling out steam. "Warning, be advised a class three calamity is in the area!" An angular mask snaps together and affixes itself to your face, cutting off your vision for a second before a display blinks to life. All that fatigue you felt the moment before fades away, and in fact you feel amazing right now. All warm and fuzzy like that one time you took oxycodone. A burst of air signifies its completion as yellow stripes burn themselves into existence on your bodysuit. "Rider of the sky!"

In a blink you're right behind him leaving a cloud of static in your wake. Your fist drives into his side, gaining his attention and ire, making him whip around to claw your throat out. It's too slow for you though, along with everything else he does. You easily weave through his enraged flurry, even giving back several of your own strikes. While he's distracted your ally takes advantage of this and a spell comes through.

"Call shadow: Wraith!" Black hands emerge from a dark pool on the ground and grip Leshi's body holding him in place. "Get him now!" She shouts at you, but you're already in motion and readying your final move.

"Hissatsu breakdown: Rolling storm!"

You kick him hard, sending his body up into the air but you don't stop there. Your body jolts forward in pursuit where you grab him by the throat with a sparking hand. Yet again you boost, driving him into the ground this time, cratering the earth as an electrical storm rages all around scorching the terrain with your energetic discharge. You're jittery and ready to keep going, but it doesn't look like that's going to be necessary. There's a cloud of smoke and in an instant you're suddenly holding the small boy in question, all back to normal and blissfully unconscious.

"Let's hope this never happens again." You pant, collapsing backwards. Your suit shatters into a cloud of light, unable to sustain itself anymore. Pecha catches you from behind and helps you stand up before you bash your head against a rock thankfully.

"Is it over?" Another voice speaks up and you see Lucy walking out from another building.

"Did you seriously just hide away instead of helping?" You groan. The dull pain is back. Even if your chest wounds are healed over somehow the pain remains.

"Yeah, he nearly tore my throat out before! No way am I coming out to fight that Miss urban explorer." She gripes, but still walks over to help you stand. Pecha grabs the unconscious Leshi and unceremoniously carriers him under her arm like a cat. "Not the best first day on the job if I'm being honest."

"Somehow yours was worse than mine." You laugh and then wince. It hurts to laugh...

(cont.)
>>
The walk back home also hurts, but you can take it with someone helping you along. The couch feels heavenly when you lay down on it. Boss is back and on the phone seemingly coordinating a damage report with the upper districts, giving your disheveled group a blank stare as you enter. You leave the explaining to Pecha though, too tired for that right now. The shorty is deposited upstairs and the ex-homeless girl just sits next to you looking awkward and trying not to be noticed. It's time to lean back and rest for you, eyelids are feeling real heavy right now...

--------------------------------------

The next week is sort of a blur. The cleanup of that attack was relatively simple since the damage was kept to a minimum so the day after is spent combing through reports and piecing together what happened. As it stands the story is that the man you met at that bank planned to use the heist as a diversion to slip away with a certain item undetected. You just so happened to catch him in the act so he triggered an attack on the city from all sides to get away unmolested. Not exactly clear on what it was he took from that vault since the staff absolutely refuses to tell what it was and isn't budging on the issue. Another point is that they weren't alone. There was another magical girl in the outskirts during the attack from what Lucy says and they're likely working together as the two people had a matching symbol on both their outfits.

As far as what else happened, its been quiet in terms of work the rest of the week. Maybe the big happening scared all the bad stuff into hiding. You've just been stuck patrolling and look for anything out of the ordinary. In the non-work department you've started to regularly go working out with Katya. Lucy is settling herself in to her new profession with your help. She's currently sleeping on a blowup mattress in the corner and taking full advantage of you as a meal ticket. She's not all that respectful of pretty much anyone but is amicable enough to listening to you. Pecha is generally the same as she always is, cheerful and aloof, while Leshi on the other hand has been particularly reclusive after the whole going feral thing and has been keeping himself stuffed in his room barely talking to anyone.

Waking up to another day you stretch out and begin thinking about what to do.

For too long you have slept in a blank room with plain undecorated white walls. "It's time to go shopping my new minion!."

"Please don't call me your minion." Said your minion following behind you down the sidewalk. "And I don't have any money of my own you know."

"Maybe I'll give you some if you're good. Besides you're getting food so what's there to complain about?"

"Fine, but I'm choosing where we eat."

A benefit of modern city planning is that everything is all bundled together in distinct areas. The whole city is a circle centered around the upper class and divided into proper areas like the market area you're walking through right now. Some people say it's ugly but to you it's convenient. Gotta think of a nice aesthetic to dress your room up in...

There's something comforting about bright neon colors combined with a gritty punk style. There were a lot of things that people were wrong about with how they thought the future would play out, but many are still fans of the style including you. Reminds you of home since you grew up around 'punks'.

Gonna pick up a neon sign, proper pillows and sheets, good posters, a stuffed crocodile that's going to be target practice later, and other such stuff. Purples and teals are such a good color scheme. It's nice buying in person as you've long since committed to never buying online. Not gonna fall for giving away your information to the infinite Amazon warehouse mines underneath the north sector. Other people don't really understand it but you can never trust big tech. Lucy buys some things with the money you give her, which happen to be a space heater and a lava lamp, not sure why but hey it's her choice.

Her choice for food also happens to be a ramen shop. She really should expand her horizons in terms of food. Still tastes good, especially since it's restaurant quality stuff. Getting chilly outside with fall approaching so warm broth is great. Maybe you should talk about something with her too.

"So, got any hobbies or anything? What do former hobos do for fun."

"I have no money besides for food and no home, what do you think I can do?" She looks at you while dumping a handful of chili flakes into her bowl. "Do you mean besides dumpster diving and wandering through thrift stores?"

"You couldn't have literally sat alone in some ruins all this time doing nothing else.

"Fine, I guess you could say metalworking. If you could call gathering up a bunch of junk and melting it down to mess around with metalworking." She takes a solid looking metal star out of her pocket and gives it to you. It's all in one piece like she melted it into a mold, but clearly hasn't been polished for a while.

"All the things you do for fun involve fire in some way, don't they."

"Well what do you do then, miss urban explorer?" She asks incredulously.

"Well I didn't completely lie about that stuff. I did sort of explore abandoned places as a kid. Granted it was also because we wanted new hideouts constantly but it was fun. It was also a part of another thing I like to do; free running."

"I have no idea what that is." She responds with a blank stare.

"It's sort of like running through an obstacle course. Abandoned places tend to have really weird terrain so it's fun to just sprint through them and see how far you can get without stopping. Jumping over gaps, climbing up to places you shouldn't be, narrowly avoiding falling on broken glass."

"Oh so you're just an adrenaline junkie thrill seeker I understand."

"Want to see it in action?" You quickly upend your bowl and finish off your meal before standing up and grabbing your bags. "I haven't done it in a while so I've been feeling a little bored."

"Don't really have a choice now do I?" She mumbles from behind you.

"Come on, it'll be fun! Think of this as training for when you'll be dodging for your life." You lead her along outwards to the edge of the city, picking a random direction that you feel is a good choice.

The further out areas in the outskirts are covered in longstanding processing plants. It's a rusted jungle of pipework and machinery made to contain the constant pollution pumped up from underneath the cityscape. To you though, it's a wonderful place to run through and mess around. It's amazing how unintended pathways can be formed by coincidence of decayed engineering. Brings back good memories, except of course that one time a pipe came loose when you jumped on it and you ended up breaking an arm. Mom got real pissed off at you for that one...

"So what now?" She asks, kicking an empty chemical silo. You both placed your goods down in a safe place just incase some guy runs along and decides to take it.

"Just try to follow my lead as best you can. Don't do anything too dangerous since you're inexperienced. It would suck if you got tetanus from tripping on a piece of junk."

You take a running start and leap up on to an old rusty pump intake, stepping off that you reach out and grab the railing of some scaffolding above to pull yourself up. "Alright then, your turn."

Lucy sighs and attempts to imitate you. She's a bit slower, and when she grabs on to the railing you have to grab her arm and help her up.

"Good job!" You pat her on the back and then step up on to an elevated pipeline. "Next let's see how good your balance is."

She follows you relatively well on this one, but that's probably because of her stubby little tail flicking side to side behind her. Pretty sure you heard about how cats use their tails to keep steady a long time ago, but you didn't know that dragons did that too. Don't know a lot of things about dragons actually. Something to think about as step off to a nearby rooftop.

It's the perfect point to start climbing up one of the many chemplant spires. You mostly spend the climb sitting on various holds above Lucy and pointing out where to put her hands and helping her up when she needs it. Eventually you reach the top and sit down next to her as she takes a breather.

"You really need to work on your upper body strength."

"Sorry, but a diet of cheap gas station food isn't exactly the best for bodybuilding." She pants and you offer her a water bottle which she graciously accepts.

"Don't worry, that's what I'm for right? Need to show you the joys of proper fried foods. Well, something that isn't noodles at the very least."

A few feet above you a gout of flame spits out from a nozzle as the machinery you sit on continues to operate, letting out a steady sluggish rhythm. The sky is beginning to turn a light orange and further away other plants spit similar bursts of fire, lighting up the twisting industrial landscape below.

"And this is what you spent all your free time doing?" Lucy asks you. Her feet dangle off the edge kicking back and forth lazily.

"Well not all of my time. It was just a thing to do while messing around with friends. Not like we had anywhere else to go to hang out. Mom and Dad were fine, but they were always busy with work so there wasn't much reason to stay at home. How about you? Couldn't have been born homeless now could you?"

"My Mom died about three years ago in a catastrophe." She says quietly. There's a awkward pause that goes on for what seems like minutes before she continues. "She was my last living relative and our home was destroyed so I had no where else to go after that..."

"Sorry to hear that..." You don't really know what to say after that. A bit of an insensitive approach on your part now that you think about it.

"It's fine, I've gotten over it by now." She absently looks at the lowering sun, muttering to you with a blank expression on her face. "I'm only sore about the time I wasted then. Just spent my days screwing around getting nothing done."

"Yeah, life can suck at times." You say, wondering where to take this next. "Can't really say that I've had to deal with losing family, but I have had my fair share of hurting, even if I did it to myself like an idiot. I broke my arm real bad once while running around the outskirts because a pipe broke when I landed on it. It was full of some caustic stuff too and it got all over me." You pull up your sleeve and show her your right arm. A medium sized patch of skin right on your forearm is a lighter shade of pink from when you got a skin graft to fix it up.

"And yet you didn't stop doing this kind of stuff? Yeah, I'd call you an idiot."

"Yep, bad things are always going to happen. Doesn't mean that things won't get better. I'll still throw myself into dangerous situations because it's what I like to do. Just a week ago I got impaled by a co-worker, but right now I'm enjoying a nice evening on top of this hunk of junk."

Lucy sighs and shakes her head. "You're weird. But I guess you're right, even if this is a forced thing being employed is better than dumpster diving."

"Oi!" Just then you hear a shout from down below. "The hell're you kids doin' up there?" One of the few workers that operates this area angrily glares up at you from the lower scaffolding, finally noticing your trespassing.

You grab her hand and pull Lucy up to her feet with you. "That's right, things will get better now that you're with me. Come on, let's get out of here!" After saying those words you jump up on to a collapsed tube and begin sliding down, guiding your new companion along with you despite her screaming all the way.

By the time the two of you get back to the office it's well into night. The bell of the door jingles softly as you walk inside and at the other end of the room you see Katya at her desk. Should probably let her sleep as she is. Just gonna move these papers into a neat pile for her and dump out the ash tray and... There, good to go. You and Lucy move up the stairs and toward your room when you stop on a specific floor. "Go and put the stuff away, I'm gonna take care of something first." You wave her away and turn towards Leshi's door.

He's been way too reclusive this past week. From the limited time you've interacted with him even you can tell that's not normal. Grabbing the doorknob you turn and open it, suddenly finding yourself stepping into a shady forest. Yep, this place is bigger on the inside, just didn't expect it to be so... Lush. From the trees long red ribbons hang down along with lanterns that light the way on a path leading to a clearing where a little hut lies half buried into the ground. You can see Leshi sitting in front of a tiny pond with a chicken roosting on top of his fluffy hair. He has a blindfold on and doesn't even notice you as you walk up behind him which is strange and... Is that a bowl of blood?

Yep, that's just a bowl of blood placed right in front of him. He doesn't stir when you look around him. Did he just fall asleep sitting here? He's drooling a little too. And why does he have a blindfold on? Well it's not like it matters. There's only one way to get his attention... Well, only one way that you've decided on.

Taking a deep breath, you stomp on the ground and shout out Leshi's name. The boy jumps from being startled, but quickly turns around to you.

"I will GUT you!" He snarls, baring his sharp canines at you. There's a deep silence and both of you seem equally nervous after that. The hen clucks in a panic and flaps its wings flinging loose feathers everywhere while running away. He rips off his blindfold and looks at you sheepishly. "S-sorry, uh... Why are you here?" This is an awkward situation to say the least...

"Not a cultist!" He says defensively. "I'm just... Doing some training is all, and I don't need you interrupting me." Leshi crosses his arms and looks up at you with a frown

"That's really not convincing. Never seen any sort of training like this. You were asleep with a chicken on your head." Said chicken is now pecking at the ground with its flock a fair distance away.

"Okay, fine... It's because you're distracting to be around." You blink in confusion at that statement. "You know how you got poked full of holes when we fought? You got your blood all over me and some of it got in my mouth. A week later and I still can't get the damn smell out of my nose. Losing control of myself wasn't exactly an enjoyable experience."

"Don't worry about it, I can kick your ass." You put your hands on your hips and smile confidently. He doesn't look persuaded.

"You're the worst at reassuring people. And from what my hazy memory tells me you needed help." You totally can beat him, not gonna fall for that same trick again. Unless he can do more of course, but you can cross that bridge when you come to it.

"Come on, It'll be fine. I'll even help you with this training of yours another day. Laying in this room of yours like an angsty lump isn't going to help anyone. You may as well just be a mascot at that point."

He sighs and lays down on the grass. "If it'll get you to leave then fine, I'll do it. I'm too tired to deal with you..."

"Weren't you already sleeping just then?" You ask, sitting down and trying to coax the chickens to come closer to you. So far they remain loyal to their owner and stay away from you.

"I was not sleeping, shut up!"

---------------------------------------

Another day and another sunrise to wake you up. You groggily get up and appreciate your new decor before heading downstairs to the coffee machine to energize yourself. Katya is there organizing a bunch of files on a corkboard. "Work showing up again?" You ask her.

"Yeah and a hell of a mixed bag of issues as well. Got a finicky noble to deal with requesting two of our staff to waste a whole day following her around being bodyguards tomorrow, of which only me, you, and Leshi can do. After that we have no concrete items. Instead we've got a whole flood of rumors and complaints to investigate and see if any of them are actually real problems that we do have to deal with and not just junk."

"What's the deal with the noble? You seem pretty upset about that."

In response she hands you a folder. "It's Hatane Suzume, a daughter of the Suzume clan. If you wish to know, most nobles are a pain in the ass to deal with but we still need to be polite since they have influence over our funding. One of the upper district girls apparently pissed them off last time so now we're the ones they turn to. All we can hope for is that they aren't too unreasonable."

"And why exactly can only three of us handle this?" You ask, looking over pictures while drinking your coffee. She's a young looking girl, sixteen with long brown hair. You've never personally dealt with the nobility of west sector, and even then they're a lot different from the other sectors and function much more like corporations than the traditional types.

"The first is your new friend. I absolutely do not trust her with handling aristocracy." You look over to the staircase and see Lucy stumbling down, only wearing a t-shirt and underwear and instantly concede that point. "Second, I'm fairly sure that Pecha will try to throttle the kid the first opportunity she gets. Don't ask why, she just doesn't get along with those types." That sounds ominous.

"Just try to be as pleasant and as formal as possible and It'll be fine. I can deal with them myself if need be. Now then... Time to deal with these." She gestures vaguely in the direction of the board and you take down a few papers.

Rumors and complaints really does describe this stuff. An apartment block complaining about noises in the night, various people saying that the tap water tastes funny, some guy saying that there's ticking sounds coming from underneath the road near a grocery store. But that's not all! There's reports of a strange shape flapping around flying in the night skies, that there's way more rats in the city than usual, several old people complaining about thugs getting into brawls at night, and of course a random person saying that there are alligators in the undercity. Not even sure if half of these fall under your line of work. Oh, hey there's a missing cat too!

Strange water? Sounds like yet another ploy of the deep state. It's time to do your dad proud and ensure the water quality of your city. You give a quick call to the department of public works and begin to explain your grievances to a typical emotionally deadened phone worker. Sure some random civilian can be ignored, but your position is a bit more substantial than that. It is then that you're then put on hold for about half an hour while they 'check some stuff'.

When they finally come back to you, they do have some important information. Apparently one of the many water treatment plants in the undercity; plant 49, has been quiet and not responded at all when called. very suspicious indeed.

You yell at Lucy to actually get dressed and organize an inspection for the plant. It's a decent walk away but you get there soon enough and see a heavily dressed and grease covered worker standing next to a maintenance entrance. It's really hard to understand him through his gruff and mumbling speech, but he explains to you the rough path to the specific plant you're aiming for with a map and compass. He hands them over to you along with a pair of gas masks before opening up the hatch and gesturing for you to climb down. Wi-Fi reception is spotty as all hell so deep underneath the city, but you should be able to navigate with a plain paper map. Probably...

86 - great success

As you're climbing down into the dimly lit corridors of the undercity you're reminded of an old friend that went to become a maintenance worker and his overall description of how it function. First you take all the infrastructure of a function city and shuffle it underground to save on space. Then you dig deeper because you need to expand, because you're running out of space. Eventually the old stuff starts to rot and break down, but you can't fix it or renovate because the second great crisis is happening and there are more important things to handle and everyone is freaking out. After that the people who didn't die have to piece together how the big mess of patchwork industry spaghetti actually functions and are mostly too scared to shift stuff around for fear of breaking something important and making a reactor start melting down after a pipe stops running. The result is what you're walking through right now.

Most maps including the one you're using right now are handmade by maintenance workers and run off shared knowledge between each other since it isn't uncommon for passages or routes to collapse or become unusable. Lucky for you this one is completely fine and you have experience with maps. The gas masks are mostly a safety precaution and you don't have to put them on during the long and winding path to plant 49. The most you have to deal with is Lucy complaining because she stepped in a pool of oil. Eventually you arrive at a more open area with a wall that has ''WATER TREATMENT ZERO-FORTY-NINE' Painted on it in big blocky red letters. You crack open the big metal door, and step inside. There aren't any staff meandering about, though you don't know if that's normal. The lights flicker dimly above giving the whole place a spooky vibe, even if the whole undercity is spooky.

Best to check out the main function of the facility first. The door to the water treatment section opens up to a large rectangular room filled with tanks and machinery that you can't even begin to understand the function of. Leaning against one of the fluid tanks is a sharply dressed man in a fancy suit and wide brimmed hat. His thin pencil mustache gives off a sleazy vibe as he looks at you with lazy unconcerned eyes.

"Good day, madams." Is all he says, just leaving it at that. He definitely does not look like a working man and is the only person you can see in this place.

"Mind explaining what you're doing here?" You ask, already suspicious of this.

"Working of course." He spreads his arms out, vaguely gesturing out to the room and taps his knuckles against the tank behind him. "If you wish, I can spare a lunch break and play a friendly game of cards. I warn you though, I'm a natural." He flashes a smile and pulls a deck of cards out of his coat pocket and shuffles it idly. That answered nothing.

"He's also polite Lucy, It would be rude to refuse. You wouldn't want to be rude would you?"

You're not the kind of person who plays cards. You've played poker like, four or five times. Pennies and little pieces of rock are used for chips and his quickly growing pile would tell anyone that either you're terrible at cards or he's pretty good.

"So tell me mister government man, what sort of chemicals are you putting in our drinking water? Was the fluoride not enough?" You say, wondering if a four of a kind is good enough to bet on.

"Pardon? I wouldn't dream of doing such a thing." He blandly states peeking over the top of his hand.

"Don't lie to me, you've got the clear look of a intelligence agency spook about you. It's some of that LSD stuff for one of your mind control experiments isn't it."

Next to you Lucy groans and holds her head in her hands while the man across from you looks confused for a moment and then breaks into laughter. "Ahahaa, oh I was expecting Magical girls to come by some time, but I wasn't expecting a comedy act!" He chuckles a bit more and continues. "No, no, no, you seem quite confused. I wouldn't dare lower myself to be a government dog who toys with the public, nothing of the sort. It isn't MY job to put something in your taps, no mine is to simply waste your time." The man flips his hand to you and shows off five jokers. Pretty sure there's only two of those in a deck. From a nearby pipe a purple ooze starts to spill out and a valve bursts, hissing out searing steam.

"And it looks like you've just activated my trap card. Henshin!" You shout and throw your cards at his face, immediately transforming afterwards to try and kick him in the chest. He looks mildly surprised, but bursts into a cloud of fluttering cards when you hit him.

"I haven't played that game in years so I'm afraid I'm not familiar with that one. So sad that they ruined it with power creep so long ago. How about I show you my special summon in response?" He's up on the gantry above now, looking down at you. You're about to say something when a rumbling and crashing noise takes your attention. The right wall below him completely shatters as a giant horrific mass of light pink flesh covered in mouths and tentacles claws its way forward. That's definitely worse than fluoride. It writhes and screams in place while a familiar geometric non-face walks out from the hole it left behind, cradling some weird purple seed looking thing under his arm.

"You again? Honestly, most people find clinginess very unappealing. No one was supposed to come down here for around..." The goo man pulls out a tiny notepad and starts flipping through it. "Three days! I don't come around on your outings and harass you now do I? Now that I think about it that sounds like a good idea, need to see If I can pencil that in somewhere..."

"Have fun with your game?" Lucy asks incredulously, a haze of heat coming over her as a tall black skeleton pops into existence behind her.

"If your memory is that fuzzy then how about a classic?" A regular spark isn't going to reach far enough to hit him. Never really experimented with your spells so far, so why not try something new and amp it up? "Raigeki!"

Energy courses out of your palm and snakes its way across the abomination leaving lines of scorch and burnt meat smell, quickly jumping off and leaping out at the card man above, forcing him to jump down to avoid getting zapped.

"Yes indeed, I remember that one. Going to have to disqualify you, that isn't a quick effect and it's still my turn! Come on out, hearts two to ten!" He tosses a handful of cards and with a puff of smoke a group of nine suited thugs brandishing hatchets and axes are standing there. upon their blank faces each has a number and heart. Along with them the abomination screeches and begins slogging towards you, slapping wildly with tentacles that crack the ground wherever they hit.

"Prominence pinion!" A red streak severs a tentacle about to swing at you, and you see that Lucy with suspended spikes of fire floating besides her. She sends the rest out, searing holes into the fleshy monster and making it let loose more of those horrid screams. The skeleton besides her runs forwards, rattling and clawing at the eight of hearts.

"You know, you shouldn't have used a poison with a taste if you didn't want to be found." Spraying the abomination with your SMG as you rolling to the side and avoid another wrathful limb. Smoke and blood rise in equal measure from its wounds, although it's a drop in the bucket with this behemoth.

"A poison?" The goo man asks, looking completely unbothered by the unfolding battle. He takes the purple seed thing and holds it up as if to examine it. "Nope, I don't think this little friend here could be called a poison. Never tried to taste it though, what's you're guess Dominic? "He looks up at the card man who is apparently Dominic.

"Pomegranates probably"

Your gun shifts into a carbine and you take aim at the goo man. Can't let him get away with that thing this time. Firing shot after shot, none of them seem to land or even do anything of note. "I'm trying alright!? Maybe you should pay more attention!" spears of fire stab into the creature over and over, but it doesn't feel like dropping you and has started to turn its attention towards your ally. Okay, this violent shaking is getting on your nerves and slowly turning your urge to vomit into anger, so you know what? If this thing is going to try and eat you then fine, it's going to eat you alright. With a careful swing you lop off the tentacle holding on to your legs and begin freefalling straight down into the maw below. You quickly slide your catalyst into your sword letting it split open and prepare yourself for what's to come. This thing is going to have some serious heartburn when you're done with it.

"Hissatsu overdrive: Clear-sky slash!"
"Jolt!"

Darkness surrounds you as you plunge into the depths. Disgusting warm flesh surrounds and tries to crush you. Acidic bile stings at the skin. Still, body and sword force a path open making darkness clear way to bright light. You gasp for air in the middle of a cloud of red mist where chunks of meat rain down, plopping gently down to the floor. Oh fuck it smells awful. It's in your hair! So many showers are going to be needed after this...

"Now that right there was hardcore my friend!" You see Dominic a fair distance away clapping. "I must give you some props for that one. But your ordeals aren't over yet. It's time for you to show the queen of hearts some love too." A heavily armored maiden wielding a heart halberd faces you. This was never going to be easy, but that's what you signed up for you suppose...

Behind you the abomination wails weakly, still reeling from your aggressive tapeworm impression. It's clearly feeling the pain and the several pins of fire repeatedly stabbing into it and nailing the thing to the ground are starting to show more and more effect. Not to far away from you the demonic skeleton punches a hole straight through the six of hearts and from the three bodies around him you can tell he's been busy.
