Looking over his shoulder to where a couple more police are talking about something, the officer leans down over to you, voice lowering but excited. "You'll probably see on the news later, but All Might himself apprehended the villain here! They jumped some poor woman, and she's in hospital right no-"

"Is this a private conversation, Oogawa?" The bland voice breaks through your rising excitement (All Might! Here?! And you missed him?!) as both yours and the officer's attention snaps to the trench-coated man who was previously further back under the bridge. He looks distinctly unimpressed.

"Detective!" Oogawa, meanwhile, just looks flustered. "I was just telling the kid why he can't go this way..."

The detective arches an eyebrow, still expressionless. "How professional of you." He flips the notebook he'd holding closed, glancing over in your direction. "Is that everything you needed, kid?"

While you switch into your non-creepy and perfectly normal analysis mode, you consider there to be several things you probably need to know. For a start, you're kind of edging towards keeping your identity secret for now at least - no reason to have anyone like your classmates sabotage you - and if it blows up in your face, at least your name won't be attached.

That means you need some kind of... technical privacy? Cyber-security stuff? You don't know much about it, but now you've got a reason to do so, it's full-steam ahead. No point posting if everyone'll know it's you.

Next is actual methods of investigation. How do investigative reporters find their stories? Their contacts? What are the legal limits they can go up to? What equipment and tools do they use?

As for journalism itself, you feel like you've got a pretty good handle on writing the information side of things, but articles aren't just bullet-pointed lists of the necessary information. You also need to get it across to the average member of the public in a clear and interesting way. More research there, too?

Humming thoughtfully as you briefly consider whether it would be possible to access the Hero Network (not that you WOULD, because that would be totally illegal for a non-registered Hero, you'd never consider that, nope, not at all), you get ready for a long trawl through the terrifying depths of the internet.

By the time mom calls you down to dinner, you think you've made a decent start - by the time you go to bed, you've made a better one. You weren't entirely sure where to begin, the whole subject being so different from your usual online jaunts, but you're getting better.

You've done some research on computer security and VPNs, downloading a few things you verified, and while you're nowhere near calling your computer secure (especially now you know how easy things are to trace and hack - you stuck a sticky-note over your camera, because yuck), you at least feel like you're making progress.

You kind of want to learn a little hacking now, though. To better defend against it, obviously! And maybe corrupt heroes would store incriminating things on their electronics... although that would be illegal to do, of course. You would never hack like that. Except for a good reason. The investigative side of things goes a little better; you download a few copies of various books on the subject, including one by a now-retired journalist who broke several major hero scandals about a decade ago. His familiarity with investigating heroes rather politicians or companies should be useful, not to mention all the other journalism books you grabbed. And yes, they were pirated, but you're on a budget - maybe you'll buy official copies when you're actually making money of your own.

See? You're not a criminal who pirates books and wants to hack people's computers. You're just being practical!

The next day, you leave your latest heroics notebook on your desk, ready to be rewritten when you have the time, and get ready for school. As much as you'd love to just take the whole day to get properly started on research, you'll need to keep your grades up - while you may not be aiming for the Heroics course any more, U.A. is still a must for you. The Management course seems like a more interesting idea than Gen Ed too, putting you firmly behind the scenes of the heroics world.

Mom seems happy still as she passes over your lunch and waves you off. A decade of worry almost wiped out overnight would do that, you suppose. Why Kacchan's such a jerk to everyone, to his friends, to you. Why he's loud, rude, aggressive, has the drive to be the best, cares so much what everyone thinks of him even as he pretends that he doesn't. Your eyes widen as it becomes clear.

Kacchan... is a tsundere.

It all makes sense now.

You remember your younger days - Kacchan's bright, awed smile as the pair of you watched All Might or other heroes rescue civilians or fight villains on TV - that one time he stopped to pet a dog when you were walking to school, and then insisted he was just pulling a pinecone from its fur. Kacchan is a kind boy who wants to be a hero to save people, but of course he'd be embarrassed to admit that - he needs to save face, to brashly insist that he just wants to be the strongest because he's the best.

You almost tremble with the shock of it all, hands gripping your phone tight. Of course Kacchan is a jerk to his friends! Even more of a jerk than he is to everyone else, because his friends know what he's really like! They, too, know that Kacchan is a raging tsundere, lashing out from embarrassment over his own fluffly, marshmallow center.

Yes. This is all so obvious now. How could you not see it before? You're ashamed to have your analysis skills fail you like this - all this time, Kacchan has been trying to hide the fact he still wants to be your friend - because why else would he still pay so much attention to you? - but his natural shyness makes him act out instead.

Bravely, you hold back the tears of joys - your friend! He's still your best friend! - and glance back up at Kacchan with watery eyes. He twitches, then glares over at you.

Humming an upbeat tune (the theme to Nightly Hero News), you select a clean spot on the roof, warmed by the sun, and settle down to pull out your bento box.

You have a mouth full of rice, glancing through the homework so far today, when the rooftop door crashes open, slamming back into the wall, as a thug - no, wait, that's Kacchan - strides out, eyes baleful, lips pulled back in a snarl, hands fisted in his pockets.

His eyes latch onto yours, darkening further. "DEKU!"

Your heart almost leaps in joy as you realize Kacchan's making another attempt to socialize with you, and you quickly swallow the rice.

Trying to suppress them, you call, "Did you bring your lunch? Let's eat together!" The happy grin might quiver a little as you try to push down the bone-rattling sob that nearly lurches out of you (a friend! YOUR friend!), but you manage to stay strong.

"HAAAAAA?!" Kacchan storms forwards, and you admire the sheer intensity he can bring forth. No doubt it'll play well on camera in future. "The hell are you talking about, shitty Deku? Like I'd wanna eat with YOU?!"

You mentally translate the last part to, 'L-like I'd wanna eat with you! Baka!', possibly with an added blush. Kacchan, it's okay for boys to be kind! Let your inner squishiness show!

Still, he's approaching! That means he isn't rejecting your offer! Smile widening, you lift up one of your octo-dogs between your chopsticks. "If you didn't bring your own, we can share! Mom always makes too much."

Kacchan's eyes narrow, but his face flushes - you'd used to think that was anger, but now you sympathetically realize it's simply a blush of embarrassment as he tries to hold the tsun in place of the dere.

It's amazing how obvious everything is now, as if your abandonment of a hero career was caused by some sort of mental break that's opened you up to the truth of the universe. The truth being that you're going to gently and affectionately dropkick your way through Kacchan's walls and help him admit that you're BFFs.

While you happily consider this bright future, Kacchan snarls, one fist emerging from his pocket, knuckles white and a few sparks cracking from inside. "Screw your stupid meal. What was that earlier, huh? You 'supporting' me? The shit does that mean?"

"It's okay! It's okay!" The remains of your bento are knocked aside as you lunge to your feet, panic driving you. Oh God, oh crap, what do you do? What do you do?!

THE NURSE'S OFFICE

In any case, you half drop to your knees by his side, and perform a move you've seen a million times on the news and hero shows - slinging the injured civilian over your shoulder in a fireman's carry. Admittedly, this one's a little more... wiggly, and... shouty than most. but at least he's not sweating enough to lose control and explode your back as he screeches.

Your heart swells a little. You are being A HERO. All Might would be so proud!

"You'll be okay, Kacchan!" The door is still open from where Kacchan tsun-d it open, and despite his bulk, Kacchan feels light as a feather as you charge through. "We'll get you help right awAWK!"

At the top of the stairs, in your desperate run, Kacchan's flailing unbalancing you, your foot slips and one hand releases Kacchan to grab for the rail. Kacchan himself writhes to escape your grasp and lurches forwards at the sudden stop, towards the stairs ahead of you.

Time slows.

You watch his eyes widen as if in a daze, your best friend's mouth opening to shout something, but all you can hear is the sudden chorus repeating in your head.

Kacchan hits the ground at the bottom of the stairs with a slam you only distantly hear, rolls a few times, and then lies, face-down, unmoving.

Vaguely, you watch another pair of students step into sight on the floor below, gawking down at Kacchan, before they look up the stairs at you.

"Holy shit," one says, staring in something between disbelief and awe.

And you know it's gonna be a real bad day.

You can't hear his heartbeat.

You bite your lip, hold your breath, keep yourself quiet as possible, but still... you hear nothing but yells and running from further down the corridor.

You let out a choked sob as you feel your head rise with his chest. He's... gone. You've killed him. Your best friend. You, a useless dek- wait.

Slowly, you lift your head and turn it to look down at the very much breathing chest.

Ah, yes. That's a bit more obvious than checking a heartbeat. Huh.

You turn your head further to look at Kacchan's face - and his eyes slowly blinking open, dazed and tired-looking.

"Kacchan," you breathe. "You're still alive."

His eyes snap open wide now, fixing on you with sudden clarity. "D-deku?" He almost sounds scared, which you totally understand. He's been through a lot, the poor guy.

You smile reassuringly at Kacchan, as wide as you can, like a hero would, resting one hand over his heart. "Don't worry, Kacchan," you say, relieved by the sounds of someone calling for an ambulance. Soon, there'll be paramedics, and medical help, and medication galore. "There won't be any pain, soon. just a little longer, and it'll all go away."

"Jesus fuck," whispers Kacchan, eyes blown wide and face pale. You can't imagine what he must be feeling right now, the pain and terror and confusion.

Holy shit I just read the results of our critfail to understand Bakugo and this has been a hilarious ride. I have no idea what the long term repercussions will be for this though. Will we really get hit with an attempted murder charge? And the absolute shock of that combine with Bakugo condemning us as a bad guy while we finally see the truth of his character? Or will it all blow over as an accident and misunderstanding that Kachan demands we never speak of again as he tries to convince himself he definitely wasn't scared of us for a second there, while we continue to misinterpret his actions as those of a tsundere?

Hoping for this path. Bakugou at this point has some weird thing we're kindness = pity = bad so it'll be interesting to see how he takes this.

Honestly I don't think his pride will let him be scared of Deku for long. I think this might have ended any more exploding journal incidents though

Congrats guys, this quest kept me awake for so long, I ended up sleeping through a no-knock police raid on my apartment. I'm proud.

You frown slightly at the still-noisy students and teachers. None of them have approached yet, keeping their distance far, far back along the corridor or in the classrooms, but all their yelling and slamming tables up against the doors can't be helping Kacchan's nerves.

He just doesn't need the added stress!

"Everyone's being really loud, sorry," you apologize, looking Kacchan deep in his eyes and trying for a rueful smile. "Shall I make them quiet, Kacchan?"

Clearly you should have done it earlier - Kacchan starts hyperventilating, hands letting off tiny bangs and crackles as he shudders, almost pushing himself back, away from you, in his spasms. Concerned, you naturally follow immediately.

"Stay - back," he gasps, between half-breaths. "G- get away from me!"

It almost brings a tear (or several thousand) to your eye that even now, Kacchan's worried his accidental explosions are going to hurt you. It's true that he IS sweating rather a lot. "You won't hurt me, Kacchan," you soothe, still following as he scrabbles back against the tiled floor, pushing his injured body faster than you'd thought possible. "I'm not going anywhere."

"No - no - no," he whispers, fainter than you've ever heard him speak, eyes glazing over as he hits the wall behind him, fingers clawing at it for a moment - and then his eyes roll up into his head, body giving a shark judder, before he slumps back down, half-leaning against the wall.

"Kacchan," you whisper, crawling almost up to you, hand reaching out to check the pulse on his neck...

And the police turn the corner a moment later, hands on the guns at their hips, ready to draw. "Stay there! Put your hands in the air! Don't use your quirk!"

... You know, from a certain angle, this whole thing looks kinda bad.

You slowly, carefully raise your hands.

The good news is that as you find yourself sat in a police interview room twenty minutes later, you at least don't have any bullet holes when the pair of officers sit across from you, and your assigned lawyer at your side.

"You're allowed to decide, Midoriya," one officer says, sounding oddly bored. "Do you want to wait for your mother to arrive, or shall we proceed now?"
