Kasuga-taisha, the grand shrine located at the once capital of Japan, Nara. It is also the shrine of the old Fujiwara family, who much affected Japan through the course of history. It is one of the minor branches of this family however, that is of interest to this tal: the Tamaki family.

For over a thousand years the Tamaki line took great care of the shrine complex, working as shrine maidens. Some believed them to be cursed due to their physical frailness; others believed them to be tasked with guarding a demon. For the Tamaki family was an unbroken line of women with no siblings, perishing not long after giving birth.

You are Tamaki Koharu, the boy who put an end to this odd, ancient line of women.

With nobody knowing what to do, you were raised in the same tradition as your mother and hers before that, like they would a girl. You don’t know your father very well, only that he sometimes sends support in the form of money and an occasional letter.

Currently you live on your own in an apartment on the outskirts of Osaka (through your dad’s help), attending school for the first time in your life. It’s already May, so you have sort of gotten accustomed to the ins and outs of it, and your classmates just shrug you off as being homeschooled very late.

High school is a fresh start for many anyways.

Since leaving Nara and living on your own, you’ve…
>become a bookworm. Perhaps socially awkward, but your smarts are in order.
>become a rebel, a rocker, and sort of a punk. Music and friends, that’s all you need.
>become a slacker. You’ve got more time on your hands for all kinds of fun.

Welcome to Advent Soul Quest!

>What is this?
A quest based on the setting of Bleach. Deviation from canon depends on the MC’s influence, and some other additions are to be expected as well.
>Who are we?
Tamaki Koharu, a 10th grade (high schooler) spiritually aware trap living near Osaka with the potential to develop spiritual powers.
>When are we?
Currently it is Autumn 1981, ~20 years prior to the events of canon.
>Dice? Challenge?
Once an action has been decided that needs a roll, I will make a prompt. This is usually 3d10, best of 3 (Bo3), against a set DC and sometimes a crit-DC. Write-ins may affect the DC as well.
>Updates?
I will aim to update at least once per hour at first, and each time make a post when I start writing, or when I intend to if I will take longer. My timezone is UTC+2 (Euro), let’s see how good or bad that’ll go.
>I have questions!
Ask away and I’ll do my best to answer.
>What do?
Have fun, vote on what feels the best, roll some dice and chill.

There’s no denying that not going to school until you turned 15 doesn’t help with making it too interesting. The teachers are just like the priests and miko back at the shrine in Nara, except that they are actually paid at the school to verbally torment students for hours and hours.

No, you cherished the free time you suddenly gained, as well as new friends. Out here you were also able to get your hands on all kinds of manga, something your caretakers didn’t really want you to read.

Incidentally, you were secretly reading one just as the school bell rang, and people were making their way to eat lunch. Everyone has their own small group, and fortunately, you have one as well.

You’d describe your friend Shoji Akane (Akane-san) as a brute in some ways, comically behaving more boyish than yourself. She’s got long brown hair, a little lighter than your black, green eyes, and a confident posture.

Your other friend, Tsukuda Chie (Chie-chan) is a more traditional girl compared to Akane. Much to the teachers’ objections, she dyes her hair blonde. Luckily for her, she’s able to brush off any problems with that with her cuteness.

You are very fortunate to have these two by your side. Given your weak physique, they help you out when you need it.

“Yo, Koharu-chan,” Akane said as she leaned against your desk. “Where do you wanna go eat?”

>Here is fine, moving is bothersome.

“Here’s fine,” you say pretty lazily, turning your head from the window towards your friends. “Moving is bothersome anyway… at least for me.”

Akane shrugs and pulls up two chairs for her and Chie to sit. Chie then takes out two boxes of bento, and offers one to you. Since you met you, she decided to make lunch for the both of you, something you learned to appreciate a lot.

“Here you go, Koharu-chan!” she said with a chirpy voice as she handed you your lunch. These squids… jeez, even the food she makes looks cute.

“Heh, thanks, Chie-chan, my debt grows ever larger,” you answer as you brush the back of your head.

“Nonsense, now eat up!”

Akane takes out her own food and just starts jamming it into her mouth, and of course proceeds to talk with her mouth full.

You take a moment to sit in silence, as your perception grows more acute from the half-slumber during the class. Unlike others, you have a bit of a special ability. Namely, you can see ghosts. Not only that, but you can actually sense them from far away. Years ago it spooked the shit out of you, but nowadays you’ve grown accustomed to it. It actually helps you avoid them, especially those that feel scary. Sometimes you find them anyway, especially the spirit of a deceased teacher from years ago hanging around the school.

“Swo I wus thinkin’,” Akane began, still munching on her food, drawing you back to the present. “mawbe we shwud gwo to twe awkade!”

Oh yes. In a short time, scientists figured out how to build the greatest inventions ever: big boxes, a television screen on it, and some buttons to smash and play. And there were cafes completely dedicated to these games. The best.

While Chie is lecturing Akane not to talk and eat at the same time, you think about what you’d like to do.

“Sure, that sounds great!”

That’s right, even if your body is weak, you ain’t gonna allow that to stop you from having fun, not after being denied that during your time at the Kasuga shrine. Fuck that.

And so it is that after school is over and noon is turning to evening, you leave with your two friends. You notice on your way a group of guys looking your way with one of them being absolutely confused. Probably another innocent guy being told that he indeed wasn’t checking out a girl.

You brush it off with a light smirk.

To get to the arcades you have to take the tram. Technically one could walk the distance, but you’re you. Akane even carries your stuff on the way. Occasionally you catch again weird glimpses of stuff happening in the sky, which your gut says are these spirits again. Who knew that the spirit world was buzzing with activity that the living never notice?

You arrive at the arcade just as the last rays of the sun paint the clouds a fiery orange, which in turn fade to red. The three of you enter the establishment clad in neon-lights of all sorts, packed with students as well as some adults, even the occasional geezer.

“I don’t know about you, but I’m hyped for some fighting games right now!”

“You always are, Akane-san,” Chie sighed, “What about a race game?”

Then again, a sign caught your eye about the downstairs section of older arcade games. Who knows what gems you can find there, and it might be more peaceful than the shouting fest here upstairs. You could go explore there while the two play what they want.

Decisions, decisions.

“Sorry Akane, but… I’d like something less intensive,” you tell your tomboyish friend. “I’ll make it up to you somehow.”

Akane was obviously a bit bummed, but she just shrugged. “It’s fine, I’ll whip around some of the guys who are playing over there,” she grinned, handing your belongings back to you.

You made your way with Chie to one of the racing games, a brand new one actually by the name of Turbo. It quickly became favored among the gaming population.

At first you played just with her, just some practice matches at first. The game is singleplayer, but you take turns and simply compare scores. Two guys approached you a few matches after, guys from a rival high school based on their uniforms.

“Hey there cuties, how about a friendly match?” the taller one inquired with a grin. “We’ll pay the rounds, of course. And if we win… will you go out with us?”

The other one, much shorter, just nodded. He was a bit fatter, with glasses, and was clearly the sidekick to this duo.

“Eh? W-Well, I..” Chie began, obviously flustered by this.

“Yeah, as if,” you respond, moving in front of Chie. “We’re fine on our own.”

The taller guy clearly frowns, but shrugs it off. “Well, suit yourselves, gals. Maybe some other time, if you’re around,” he winks.

Looks like he was mostly ‘assessing’ the two of you. The shorter one though took it a bit more personally, as when they left you he looked like he was throwing a fit. You do catch the taller guy looking back at you with a curious gaze.

As you keep alternating with Chie, you talk about all kinds of stuff.

“Koharu-chan, what’s it like so far, school I mean?”

“To be honest? A bit boring. But I’d take it any day over being stuck at Nara. I mean, it was a simple life, but being practically under house arrest was bonkers.”

Chie sighed on the other hand. “Nara is so nice though… and it has all those cute deer too..”

“Oh don’t get me started on them,” you groaned, “Always loitering around, headbutting for food, and leaving a mess everywhere.”

“Whaaat? They can’t be that bad. My family took me there and they were so cute and humble, always bowing.”

“Nevertheless, I’ve had enough deer for a lifetime.”

Time went on, and it was time to go home. Your body already started to ache. Akane came back after having beat a bunch of guys, to get you home. While Chie lived in the other direction, Akane lived a station away from your home. She was always ready to make sure you got home.

Saying goodbye to Chie, you left with Akane to the train.

Akane kept boasting the whole journey about her matches. At first it was bearable, but it got repetitive really, really fast.

“Yeah, yeah, I know, you are the best, Akane,” you smiled and waved.

“There was this one tall guy from our neighboring school though, he at least looked like he knew what he was doing.”

You stop still for a moment and then laugh, and ask if he had a short, chubby-ish sidekick with him. Apparently it was the same duo, and you explained that they were trying to bet on a date with you and Chie.

“Heh, well, it doesn’t surprise me. I mean, if you’d have boobs too, you’d be the target of every guy like him.”

“Thanks, you always know how to cheer me up, Akane,” you say sarcastically.

“Oh come on, you know it’s true. I hear even some guys at our school are considering giving you a shot anyway. It doesn’t look like you’re too much against it either,” Akane said and continued to tease you. “I mean, just how many letters did you receive the first month alone, before people caught on?”

“W-Well… Twenty? Ish? I.. lost count,” you replied, scratching the back of your head.

“Would you consider anyone? If it were just the perfect type?” Akane continued to tease.

“What’s with all the questions, jeez…”

Akane just kept looking at you, expectantly. You sigh as you give up.

“I don’t know, I don’t think so. Probably not. I’ve never really considered it. A-Anyway, we gotta jump off the next station.

And so Akane walks you to your apartment, making sure you don’t trip or anything. Kind of silly, but you do appreciate the gesture. A parting hug, and you waddled over to your bed, preparing to sleep.

The moment that you await every day.

A moment of calm breaths, your eyes closed, you feel like you are pushed out upwards towards the ceiling. Your soul separated from your physical counterpart, and you are left looking at your… self. Unlike the many souls you’ve seen, you don’t have one of those weird chains connecting your soul and your body. In a sense, you are more… free.

Oddly enough, the clothes you wear also seem to always transfer. The spirit world works in mysterious ways.

You open up your window, which would probably look quite spooky to any onlookers, and climb over it. Since you were able to see ghosts, you also had learned to separate yourself like this. It was a blessing that allowed you to explore beyond what your physical body allowed.

Your spiritual sense becomes also much more acute while outside your body. A lot of is happening all around you, especially during nighttime. There’s a few stray souls though lingering nearby. You’ve sometimes helped them let go of their attachment to this world, but it’s always a bit risky.

You sense three of these souls nearby. Where to go?
>The playground. A soul there could only mean one thing… a child.
>The park with a small pond. Normally souls don’t linger there.

You make your way towards the playground at a normal walking speed. The night is still early, but the moon is already out in its full shine.

Over the years of observing ghosts you’ve noticed a few things: Ghosts with those chains on their chests can’t move on without help. Usually victims of accidents, these poor souls have unresolved emotional ties to the world. Some even start to deform a bit, others grow larger.

Ghosts without chains are rather rare however, and when you see them, they’ve half-faded away already. You’ve put it under the idea that they just decay much easier, unlike the first type.

Then, you know there are these mean-feeling ghosts. The way they feel through your sixth sense alone is enough to make you keep your distance, but the few times you’ve seen them, they are greatly deformed, usually in some shape of form more beastial. A black, empty hole on their torso, and a frightening whie, bone-like mask on their face.

Then you’ve also seen these odd warrior souls in black traditional clothing, waving swords around. Given that they fight the mean ones, you’ve given them a pass, but you still avoid them. They do something to these lingering souls and they disappear. You don’t really want that to happen to you.

Finally, you arrive at the playground. It is empty during this time of the night, but you do find the soul that you sensed before. A little child, no more than 6 years old, with a severed chain dangling from the chest, sits on one of the swings.

You approach, lowering yourself more to the child’s level.

“What’s your name?” you began, trying your best to look calm and nice.

The child, evidently a girl, looks up with a sad expression. “I’m Tokiko..”

“Well Tokiko-chan,” you smiled, “I’m Koharu. Why are you here all alone? It’s pretty late, you shouldn’t be out here at this time.”

Tokiko looks down at the ground, while swinging just a bit. “I’m looking for mommy…”

Her voice grew slowly more sad. “Mommy said she wouldn’t be long… I-I want to go home with her..”

“W-Well, would you like to go home with me? Maybe mother is waiting there.”

The child’s eyes light up as she looks up at you, small tears in the corners of her eyes.

“R-Really?”

You nod, and offer your hand to her, which Tokiko takes as she gets off the swing.

Then, you feel a cold shiver run down your spine. Your sixth sense practically screams of alarm.

You don’t know how, but one of those mean-feeling ghosts simply appeared on your sixth sense out of the blue, out of nowhere. And the hunger you sense… it is definitely scary.

“Hey Tokiko-chan… I want you to be very brave now and trust me,” you say as you gently pick up the child while looking around. You still can’t exactly pinpoint where this hungry ghost is, but you don’t want to stay here where you’re sure it’ll find you.

“Whatever happens, hold tight!”

You start running along the adjacent street, trying to find any place you could turn or hide in.
Unfortunately for you, it doesn’t seem like your pursuer is about to let you.

A warning rings through the back of your head and you duck sideways just in time as some sort of projectile flings past you, causing a small explosion further ahead. A loud boom and wind results from it, but the physical world remains mostly untouched. You’re sure though, if that had hit you, you’d be almost dead and this child, well, dead-er.

“What’s this~?” a menacing, reverberating voice rings from the monstrous creature. Now that you look at it, it’s a deformed humanoid with a skull-like mask over its head, glowing eyes beneath it. You can’t help but tremble.

“Why are you taking my baby girl? Are you a kidnapper?” the monster continues. It sickens you that this creature is implying that Tokiko is her child.

You’re slightly bruised from the dodge, but otherwise still fine… albeit afraid, very much so.

>I won’t let you have her! (Stay and protect Tokiko, with her on you, you can focus just on dodging)

“Tokiko-chan,” you quietly say, “I need you to be brave again. Run that way, along the road, and don’t look back. I’ll keep the meanie away, you understand?”

“B-But.. will I see you again?”

“O-Of course, now run, please..!”

With that, the girl did her best at a sprint. You’re sure that if the monster in front of you would have wanted to, it would’ve already taken a shot at the girl. Fortunately for Tokiko, the monster is focused and curious about you, much to your misfortune.

“Kukukuku,” the distorted, dual voice laughed, “you are going to stand up to me? You do smell extraordinarily tasty… how lucky!”

You mentally prepare for anything. The only things you’ve got going for yourself are legs for running and dodging, as you doubt your fists are going to do anything against that monstrosity.

“Dance for me, little bird!” the monster screamed as it unleashed some weird fruit-looking projectiles at you. To the monster’s surprise, you managed to dodge pretty well, a big thanks to your extremely acute sixth sense alerting you of both the monster and the projectiles. The small explosions that the projectiles set off do make it harder for you to keep your balance, but you survive with just some scratches.

The monster narrows its eyes, if that’s possible with that mask.

“Oh, so you do dance well… Maybe you’re one of those shinigami, hmmm? No wonder you smell so delicious, I don’t think I can.. contain myself anymore!”

Your heart sank as you felt the full power behind the monster, especially the bloodlust and hunger emanating from it. By sheer willpower you slowly back off instead of being paralysed in place.

With an ear-splitting roar, the beast launches itself at you. A strong, primal fear rises within you up to your throat…

All that emotion that shook your literal soul to the core, burst out in a scream of desperation. The monster stopped for just a moment, hesitating as it itself was suddenly struck by the same fear you felt, before unleashing a punch towards you, flinging you to a wall.

Blood trickled down your lips, your breathing became much heavier, and you’re pretty sure your torso is broken in many places. Your senses haven’t yet failed you, but things slowly become more and more numb.

“What the fuck was that, you bitch?!” the monster shouted as it approached you. “Fucking hell, how DARE you make ME feel that?! You weak, pathetic piece of shit!”

You’re not sure yourself what happened. But it doesn’t matter if all it managed to do was piss off your enemy. Is this how it all ends for you? Protecting an already dead child?

‘Looks like that crappy shrine maiden training rubbed off of me in the end..’

“I’ll devour you slowly and meticulously, just so you can agonize a little longer!” the monster continued to shout, though you had stopped listening a while ago.

Then, as the monster loomed over you, a blinding flash of light cut right through the monster’s head. A man in black traditional clothing stood between the two pieces of the monster, as they began sizzling and dissipating into the air. As he turned around to look at you, your weary eyes could make out Tokiko-chan clinging to his arm, crying as she pointed towards you. So she found help, huh?

The man approached you, kneeling and started doing something, you’re not sure what even. But it did ease the pain.

“W-Who..” you tried to talk, but ended up coughing some more.

“Don’t talk, just rest. I’m not an enemy,” he explained.

“I’m a Shinigami.”

You are Tamaki Koharu and you’ve just been smacked into a wall. Were it not for this man calling himself a death god, you would’ve already been the dead monster’s midnight snack. Since the pain alleviated you lost track of events, but you do remember asking him to take you to your body.

You slept like a dead baby.

...Well, that might not be a good analogy anymore.

You wake up the next day for school. But as you get up, your torso hurts, even though you make sure that there’s no visible injury. Looks like any damage you sustain as a soul will be felt as this ‘phantom’ pain you’re experiencing.

You sigh and do your best to get yourself in school condition before Akane comes to pick you up.

“You look like shit,” she remarks as you open the door. Under that joking she was however truly concerned.

“Thanks,” you grumble, “let’s just.. get this day over with.”

Akane spends the whole trip to the school playing 20 questions with you trying to figure out why you are in such bad shape, but you do your best to dodge it off and blame it on your condition. You can’t just tell her you were out strolling, separate from your body, attacked by a monster, and then rescued by a ‘death god’, that’d just sound insane.

The school day goes as it always goes, except you stay half-dazed throughout it. Were it not for Chie and Akane you don’t know what’d you be doing. You decide the best course of action is to just get back home to rest after school.

“Note to self: don’t repeat yesterday,” you say to yourself as you close your apartment’s door, only to turn around and see the guy from last night.

“Yo.”

“Don’t ‘yo’ at me, what are you doing in my apartment?!” you ask. Privacy is kind of important to you, as your caretakers never gave you any.

“Hey, hey, easy there, I came to check up on you,” he raised his hands in defense.

You pinch the bridge of your nose. “Up. Go to the roof.”

The shinigami leaves through the window, and you lie back down on your bed, still in your school uniform, proceeding with the soul separation. This time it happened much more slowly, and fortunately your spiritual body didn’t seem to have yesterday’s damage. But you did still feel some pain.

You climb out of your window. The building itself is a three-story house with a nice gable roof, two planes forming an arch. The roof was one of your favorite spots to relax in this form.

The sun already begins setting as you sit next to this guy.

He leans back against the roof. “I’m Takenaka Hisashi. Sorry that I intruded into your home like that.”

You look at him, then at the sky, sighing. “Tamaki Koharu. It’s… fine, Takenaka-san.”

“I remember mostly what happened yesterday,” you began, “even if I can’t understand it all.”

“Well, you’re not supposed to, being still alive and all,” Takenaka said, closing his eyes.

“Tokiko-chan.. where is she?”

“I sent her to the afterlife.”

“The afterlife?”

Hisashi nods. “Soul society we call it. She’ll spend the rest of her afterlife there until her soul is ready to return to the cycle.”

“So the Buddhists were right then, it’s all a cycle…”

“Pretty much. Now, Tamaki-san, may I ask you some things?”

“Well, that depends on your intentions.”

Hisashi blinked and waved his hand. “Nah, not like that.”

“You don’t feel like a regular soul, like the child. For one, even while alive, your soul isn’t bound by the chain of fate to your body. Why is that?”

The chain of fate? What kind of name is that anyway?

“I don’t know. Ever since I began seeing ghosts I gained the ability to sense them even far away as well as the ability to separate myself from my body.”

“Sense?” Hisashi thought out loud. “How well?”

You close your eyes and for the first time, properly focus on this sixth sense of yours.

You feel out the neighborhood around your home. Mostly there’s only the living, and they all become just white noise to you. Extending your senses even further, you notice some stray souls here and there, and a few of other shinigami. Now that you have something to compare the souls with, the shinigami feel somehow more… rich in their presence. More colorful.

And then you notice something: As the sky darkens, your senses pick up one of those bad souls that you had confronted yesterday. It felt as if something in this world was torn slightly apart, and the monster just appeared.

You describe everything you sensed so far to Takenaka, including roughly their directions and distances to you. He slowly rose up and looked bewildered. Then he took out a comically large device, which you’d describe as a pocket television. He waits for a moment while looking at you, then at the device, until a blip appears on it.

“Well, would you look at that. A hollow did appear.”

“A hollow?”

“One of those monsters you fought before. They’ve lost their heart and eat other souls to get spiritual energy. The richer in spiritual energy the soul…” he said, turning to stare at you, gears turning in his head, “the more it’ll attract hollows.”

Hisashi rose up, ready to leave, but then hesitated for a moment.

“Your ability is very useful. You could either stay home and be safe…”

“...or you could come with me and help me kill that hollow.”

“I’m coming. If I can really make a difference… then that’s good enough of a reason for me.”

Hisashi gives an approving smile. “Well said. Now, wrap your arms around my neck.”

“W-What?”

“I said wrap your arms around my neck and don’t let go. You think we’ll go by foot?”

Awkwardly, you move behind Hisashi and do as he asked. You can’t help but remember your chat with Akane where she teased you about boys, and you mentally show her the middle finger.

“Hold tight!” Hisashi said as he prepared to jump, and to your horror you suddenly found yourself flung through the air with him.

“You’re safe, stay focused, Tamaki-san,” he said as he once more used the technique known as Shunpo, or flash step. “I need you to use your senses and tell me where exactly the hollow is, understood?”

You nod, and track the menacing feeling soul that your sixth sense is picking up. This one somehow felt even more sinister than the first one you’ve encountered. Hopefully coming along wasn’t a mistake.

Hisashi lands on a roof of a taller building, where you told him to. Slowly, multiple dancing lights began appearing all around, yellow spheres. Your senses pick them up very clearly, as they are radiating from the concentrated energy in them.

“Takenaka-san, I-I think those are…!” you begin, only to see one of them suddenly dart at you, exploding.

Fortunately, Hisashi was already on it: He grabbed you and retreated further away on the roof, closer to the maintenance entrance.

“..Bombs,” he finished your train of thought. “Can you sense where that bastard is hiding?”

While the monster isn’t visible, his spiritual signal is clear to you. It also seems that those will’o’wisp-like glowing orbs also serve to hinder others from sensing him this way. For you however, it isn’t too hard.

“I can!” you reply to him.

“Good. Because I can’t, so you’ll have to guide me while I swing the sword. Don’t worry, if anything comes your way… I’ll protect you.”

Jeez, is this heroics that you hear?

Takenaka draws his katana and charges into the field of lights. The flying lights seem to move randomly, but some are clearly hurled at him. The explosions force him to dodge many times, but he keeps on going. You shout to him to the best of your ability so he can find the hollow, but this creature is much more agile than either of you anticipated.

Fortunately for the two of you, you notice that new exploding wisps always form right where he is, and as they dwindle in numbers, it becomes constantly easier. Finally, Hisashi manages to land a hit on the monster, where his form sizzles back into visibility.

If you’d have to somehow describe this wicked monster, it would be through mixing a dog’s description with that of an angler fish, giving you the unholy monstrosity in front of you. His tail ends in what an angler fish would have on its head, with a yellow bulb at the end which you assume it uses to form these exploding wisps.

“Grrr, damn irritating shinigami…” it speaks in the characteristic dual resonating voice that hollows seem to have. “I’ll enjoy breaking every bone you have and turning you into fine juice for me!”

Now that the monster is visible, Hisashi doesn’t really need your help to find the hollow, but now that his mind is occupied with the hollow, he is vulnerable to the wisps floating around. You don’t know yet how the hollow controls them, but you’re not gonna let that beast take a cheap shot at Hisashi.

Then, you also have to be careful, as you never know when that monster will decide to shift its attention to you.

The hollow keeps trying to claw and bite through Hisashi, but he expertly uses his katana to fight the beast. You do your best to alert him to any odd changes in the wisps, or if he’s getting pushed towards one. A few of them do explode, but Hisashi keeps his footing.

Obviously, this isn’t something the hollow really likes.

Your mind goes alert as you sense all of the remaining wisps suddenly move and hurl at Hisashi, who has his blade currently locked with the hollow’s claws. As they disengage, Hisashi uses some kind of… magic? Something of the sort to create a shield around him, upon which the wisps detonate.

That all however, was a diversion.

The moment they disengaged, the hollow sprung and camouflaged itself once again, and darted towards you. Your sixth sense however is very keen and alert, and you managed to notice this just in time to do a big leap. The hollow crashes into the maintenance room with stairs downwards, partially demolishing it. Apparently, with enough force, even spirits can affect the physical world.

You don’t have time to dawdle though, as the hollow is closer to you than it is to Hisashi, who just now got out of the smoke and dust. While he managed to defend from most of the wisps, he still sustained burns across his body.

“Dinner-time~” the menacing voice echoed through the roof as the hollow became visible again right in front of you. Hisashi shouted your name and was ready to dart, but even you know that he won’t make it unless you do something.

Once again, your body begins to tremble and fear fills you.

Time seems to slow down as your fear turns into panic. Your whole body quivers and you let out an ear-splitting scream. The hollow that was about to eat you stops dead in its tracks, its own body now shaking. The fear that had you in its grip now had the hollow. Then, you begin feeling a completely alien feeling inside of you: a primal hunger… for souls.

The hollow remained unmoving for a solid minute with you, just staring into your eyes. Hisashi was thrown completely off guard by this event, but eventually snapped out of it. With a flash step, he appeared above the angler-like hollow and delivered a slash straight to its head. The connection severed, your mind returns to reality as well. You’re still half sitting and half lying on the ground when Hisashi walks over to you and kneels.

“Are you alright?” he asks and helps you sit upright.

“Y-Yeah, I think so…” Disregarding some bruises, you managed to get out of this unscathed. Hisashi, on the other hand, still had his clothes ruined and some nasty burns here and there.

“You’re wounded..!”

“It’s fine, it’ll heal. This is nothing.”

You punch him in the knee, after which he pretty much slumps down, twitching.

“Dumbass. Don’t act like a stupid hero.”

Hisashi slowly gets himself back seated, sighing. “Well, at least it’s taken care of. What I’m really interested in though now, is you.”

“W-What?”

Hisashi narrows his eyes as he stares intensely at you. “Just what was it that you did just now?”

“I-I don’t know. I just… panicked,” you say, scratching the back of your head and looking towards the rubble caused by the hollow. Naturally, as the hollow’s head was destroyed, its soul dissipated and disappeared from this world.

“Extraordinary Reikaku… and now stopping hollows? Yeah, I’m not buying it.”

“What? I told you, I have no idea what that was!” you insist.

Hisashi slowly rose up to his feet. “Well, I’ll just have to take you to a certain candy shop owner. If anyone, he can give us answers.”

“Candy? Have you lost your mind?”

“But, thanks to your little trick, I didn’t have to take any stronger measures against the hollow,” he said as he took out that weird device again.

“...Wait, you’re telling me you were holding back?” anger crept into your voice now, “and you didn’t USE it?!”

Hisashi just sighs. “Look, the spirit world shouldn’t meddle in the affairs of the living,” he says with a dead serious expression. “The more power we exert here, the more we meddle… the more we put humans in danger. Using more power - that’s how you make humans spiritually aware in the first place, and paint a target on their back for hollows.”

You take a moment to reflect on what he just said. How did you yourself even become spiritually aware? You can’t really remember it.

“In any case, it appears this one was the hollow labeled as Wisp Angler. There’s not many hollows that can hide as it is, and fortunately, VERY fortunately, we didn’t bump into the most notorious and infamous one.”

Great, plenty of bigger fish in the sea.

“These hollows.. what are they exactly? Where do they come from?”

Hisashi helps you up on your feet as he uses similar magic as before to partially heal his own wounds.

“Well, let’s see, how to put it… They were once like you or me, ordinary souls.”

Hearing this makes your heart sink.

“Remember the chain on that girl before? Give it enough time, and it eats itself away, and finally, destroys the Saketsui, the heart of the soul. Without it, souls cannot ‘breathe’ so to say, which is why they become hungry. Very hungry.”

“So this hollow… and the one yesterday… were ordinary souls once?”

“Yes…” Hisashi sighs, then raises his sword to show it to you.

“This is a Zanpakutō, a Soul Cutter. While it looks like it’s meant to kill, it’s true purpose is far from it. Whatever it cuts, it purifies, and sends on into the cycle of birth and rebirth.”

“In other words, our job is to allow souls, ordinary or hollow, to move on.”

You take a moment to take it all in. Ordinary souls, hollows, shinigami… it’s all pretty sudden in the end.

“R-Right,” you gather yourself together, “so now that I’m a target, how do I get stronger? This candy-man, you’re saying he might know a thing or two?”

Hisashi nods. “Technically, me meddling in your life is already stretching the limits of what I can do without getting punished by our laws, since you’re still ‘alive’. But technically, you’re also a soul, at least right now.”

“Technically I could teach you some skills. Swinging a sword isn’t our only way of fighting. But again…” he said, scratching the back of his head as he tried to think things through. “It might bite me back in the ass.”

“As for the candy-man as you call him, he’s a big question mark as well. He’s… not exactly on speaking terms with Soul Society. But he’s incredibly resourceful. If anyone could figure out your powers, it’d be him. But I’ll warn you, he’s sketchy as hell.”

Well, it looks like you’ve got a few choices here. Even if you ever wanted a normal life with that shitty physical body of yours, it’s not gonna happen.

Hisashi could indeed train you, but he doesn’t seem to be the most experienced in teaching. He does feel trustworthy though.

On the other hand, this candy-man seems a lot more experienced, but you have no idea what you’d be walking into with him.

You sigh, and weigh the two choices. You do come to the conclusion that only one of them makes sense, based on what you know.

“This.. candy-man. I’ll take my chances with him. If he’s as resourceful as you say he is, I think he’s my best shot. Also keeps you out of trouble.”

“Heh, didn’t think you’d worry about me, Koharu-san.”

You facepalm for a moment. “Will you take me to him or not?”

“Yeah, I will, but I’ll need to pull a few strings. I don’t know if he’s in town at this moment. He gets around, you see.”

Hisashi carries you back home despite your protests. He threatened to princess-carry you if you didn’t shut up and go with it. You get into your room through the window, and turn to look at Hisashi, literally standing mid-air, on some transparent-ish orange footing. At this point, you’re not even surprised that he can do that, and chalk it off as another mystery of the spirit world.

“Hey, uh, Koharu-san,” he called to you before you managed to close the window, “Thanks. You did good today. I would’ve probably been in trouble alone. So.. thanks.”

You laugh and nod. “You’re pretty funny when you’re all awkward.”

“Oh come on, I’m trying to be sincere here!” he grumbles, “Fine. Good night!”

“Hisashi-san,” you call out before he bails, “Thank you as well. And good night.”

The next week felt quite strange. Your encounters with two hollows and meeting a shinigami strengthened your ties with the spirit world and your sixth sense has never been as precise and far-reaching. This meant that focusing on anything at school became an even larger pain.

Akane and Chie did notice that something was clearly tiring you more than usual, but you kept your lips tightly sealed on the matters of spirits. Honestly, looking at them being so much more carefree than you was both refreshing and a bit sad. Your physical body feels like a restrictive prison, while separating your soul feels much more natural.

On and off Hisashi offered you some work to pinpoint wandering souls and the occasional hollow. He didn’t offer you to come with him at any time though, which you believe him trying to be ‘protective’. The fact that when there was nothing to do he spent his time on your apartment’s roof pretty much confirmed that. Sometimes on sleepless nights you climbed up to the roof and just talked with him. You were especially interested in what the afterlife, Soul Society, was like, to which he just shrugged and explained that it was much more stale and boring than what you’d expect.

And then came today, the day when you’ll meet the fabled, sketchy, candy-selling man. It doesn’t help that you are 15 years old.

The shop, for a lack of a better word, was a traditionally built dumphole in an alley one wouldn’t dare go into for the fear of being mugged. Hisashi just tugged you along the way with an expression of ‘I know, shut up.’

He knocked on the door and opened it, excusing himself out loud. In a moment, a ragged-looking man with a weird hat appeared behind a sideways moving door.

“My, my, if it isn’t Hisashi-kun! How you’ve grown!” he said with a face clearly feigning casualness. It just made him look utterly stupid.

“And you brought with you a pretty miss!” he continued, “I’m Urahara Kisuke, the owner of this fine shop!”

Hisashi whispers to you, “Everyone just calls him Mr. Hat-and-Clogs though.”

You nod to him. “Nice to meet you, Mr. Hat-and-Clogs, I’m Tamaki Koharu.”

Urahara awkwardly chuckles at this, no doubt being sick of that nickname.

“So, I hear you are in need of some help, yes?” Kisuke says, his eyes suddenly turning serious, with a curiosity one could only attribute to a zealous scientist.

“I am in need of help… but I am more in need of a mentor,” you say with a sort of determination. All your life you’ve felt bothersome, and now you have a chance at actually amounting to something.

“I’ve become a target for hollows. I can’t just ignore that, or else I’ll endanger myself, and those around me. So I ask you, Urahara-san, please help me get stronger!” You bow after saying that.

Kisuke seems to appraise you for a good moment, holding his fan in front of his mouth, before closing it and giving you that cheerful but stupid look of his again.

“Alright, you win! But don’t complain after you sign the deal,” he said, while turning around towards the other hallway from where he came. “Tessai! Can you please make some tea for our fine guests?”

A rather large and muscular man comes out, with a moustache that’d put most Englishmen to shame, and glasses that feel a bit too reflective. He gives Kisuke a thumbsup, and goes back where he came from.

“Please follow me, let’s sit and relax first! You too, Hisashi-kun, I’m sure you’re overworked as it is!”

Hisashi looks like he’d rather not and just go, but after giving you a glance he sighs and surrenders.

As you are all seated and Tessai brings you all a cup of green tea along with some traditional snacks, Urahara once again focuses on you.

“So tell me about yourself Koharu-san. Maybe your history will give us some clues?” he says in that annoyingly fake careless voice of his.

>Vague explanation. Nara shrine, caretakers, then moving out to attend high school.

You sigh and sip a little bit of the still-hot tea. Wait, is this actual, physical tea? It doesn’t seem to just splash through you as you drink it… so does that mean it’s ‘spiritual tea’? Now you’re just confused. You decide to just drink it and worry later.

“I was born in Nara, near the Kasuga Grand Shrine. I was mostly raised by my caretakers as my mother… she passed on when I was young.” Your memory of her is quite fuzzy, but you do remember her eyes. She knew how to smile through them.

“I began seeing ghosts also quite early on, I think… I can’t exactly remember when. But I just shrugged it off, and once I grew old enough that I was told not to have imaginary friends, I put two and two together. About at the same time my sixth sense… or Reikaku as Hisashi-san called it, developed.”

“I heard it’s quite exceptional,” Kisuke comments, glancing at Hisashi for a moment, before returning his focus to you.

“A few months ago I moved away from Nara in order to attend high school. I kind of wanted to get away from there.”

“Ah, the rebellious phase! Such mysterious power puberty brings!”

You glare daggers at Kisuke who hides his face behind that fan of his. After calming yourself, you continue.

“Then there’s been these two incidents, when I was facing a hollow both times. I was cornered, and the hollow was about to kill me when… I screamed. And the hollow stopped. The first time it was only brief, and it angered the hollow. A lot.”

“The second time though, the hollow completely stopped.”

Urahara whistles at this. “That’s not something you hear every day!”

“That’s about it,” you conclude. Of course, you didn’t tell the complete story. After all, Hisashi did warn you not to trust him blindly.

The three of you sit in silence for a few minutes. The suspense was getting to you, and when you see that Urahara has suddenly dozed off of all things, you couldn’t help but snap.

“Damn it Urahara-san, at least pretend to care if you offer to help!” you say as you throw a cracker at him. To your surprise, he just catches it, and starts munching on it.

“Don’t worry Koharu-san, I was just thinking about our options.”

“You have a few options here, in my professional point of view.”

“One, I can teach you the basic skills of a shinigami. Hohō, the fast-movement techniques. No doubt you’ve seen Hisashi-kun’s shunpo. Kidō is all about what you’d call ‘magic’. Spells, incantations, a very versatile thing indeed. Hakuda is our to-go martial art without weapons. As souls we’re not bound to the same restrictions as humans. Then there’s Zanjutsu, but without a Zanpakutō like that of Hisagi-kun’s, I’m afraid I can’t teach you other than kenjutsu.”

He pauses to think for a moment, giving you again that serious, and somewhat scary gaze. “We could try giving you one…”

At this, Hisashi objects. “You know the Gotei 13 won’t like that, Urahara-san. Aiding shinigami is one thing, but handing civilian souls our tools? That’ll make her a target to them too.”

“Now calm down, calm down,” Urahara defends, “I wasn’t saying I’d do it, but… it is a curious option.” It’s clear that he’s absolutely interested in seeing what would happen.

“Now, as for your curious hollow-affecting power, that’s more tricky. We can try have you train it on me or my associates, but if I’m right… we’ll need another type of specimen. Hollows.”

You can definitely see how that’s dangerous.

>Teach me Hohō. If I can run away and take others to safety, that’s all I need.
>Teach me Kidō. That way I will have a larger set of tools to use.

Our scream hasn't been shown to actually damage the hollows, so having an avenue to attack while their pinned down would be good. Also get that evasion up.

Hisashi talked some shinigami business with Urahara while you were left to think about what you should do. Once your teacup is empty, you’ve reached your decision.

“If I can stop, even paralyze hollows by shouting at them, I think that’s my best bet. I know it will be dangerous to train, but I am ready for it.”

“That alone won’t do though, so I ask you to teach me Hohō and Hakuda. I think this will serve me the best in the end.”

Hisashi seems somewhat relieved that you didn’t even consider the Zanpakutō option that Kisuke offered you, while he on the other hand is a bit bummed. Nonetheless, Urahara agrees with your choice.

“Very thoughtful, I do think those skills will do you wonders,” he explained.

“You will get a week. That’s all the time I have in this corner of Japan, before I need to go attend to business elsewhere. It’s up to you just how much time you want to dedicate to this training.” Urahara studies your expression for a moment.

“Make no mistake, while you could train day and night, you shouldn’t underestimate rest and friends. The more time you spend outside your physical body…”

“...The weaker that link becomes.”

And I’m ending the thread here. As much as I’d like to continue, I do want to go to sleep a bit earlier (2 a.m., huh..) than yesterday, and I should plan ahead some more for the next thread.

Thank you everyone who participated, I am extremely happy and satisfied with the first thread of hopefully many to come, and I hope you all enjoyed it as well.

Feedback and discussion is very much welcome. If you have any questions, I’ll do my best to answer them as well.

Twitter is up and running and I’ll write there when I intend to do the next session (most likely next weekend).

I’ll archive the thread in a few days, earlier if no posts happen.

Discord, well, I’ll make it if people want one.

Character sheets will be hopefully created by the next thread. It will be a google spreadsheet, as I want it to keep track of changes per thread, in case future people want to read from the archive. I know I wanted this when reading my favorite quests…

See you next time!

Cheers for the run, was fun!
Always nice to see new bleach quests.

Good start always wanted more human spiritualist stuff explored in Bleach so this is interesting. Trap angle threw me off lol, on a scale of 1-10 what was the threat to our bussy this thread?
>>
>>4440028
First priority:
>If my ability is to stop hollows by shouting at them, that’s my best bet.
Second:
>Teach me Kidō. That way I will have a larger set of tools to use.
Third:
>Teach me Hohō. If I can run away and take others to safety, that’s all I need.

Later down the line we should ask Urahara to rig up a facemask that blocks our voice from being heard so we can chant the Kido incantations without alerting the enemies of the incoming attack.

I've set up so far multiple paths you can take. Even if you'd go the shinigami route at some point, it'd be quite different due to keikaku

>Trap
It's something I've wanted to try for a while, but it also fit the overall narrative. I'm a trapfag

Bussy threat this thread was a 1. I don't intend to bring romance this early in the game (even if I tease it), and when it happens, I'll need to juggle between what to write in the thread, and what off-screen (or eventual omakes).
